A bountiful backdrop
To create a little drama behind her cake table, bride Samantha Ehredt made an ombré backdrop from pink balloons (an idea her wedding planner, Logan Powell, likely found on Pinterest, she says). Affixed to three black 2'x4's, the balloons worked to draw guests’ eyes in. “I think it’s extremely important to throw in personal touches that people will likely remember and never see at another wedding,” Samantha says.

Originally from Kentucky, bride Randi Carpenter’s grandfather owned several Clydesdale horses which, over the years, became like members of the family. “The southern,
equestrian theme of our wedding was an easy choice for me during the planning stages,” Randi says. “Since the horseshoe is a symbol of good luck, we thought that they would serve as the perfect wedding favor!” The ones she used at her wedding are from Keeneland race track in Lexington, Kentucky. “We were visiting Keeneland at Christmastime and my mom and I thought that we’d ask some of the trainers in the barns if they had any horseshoes leftover from the fall races and sure enough they did! They gave us two huge buckets full of ‘used’ horseshoes.” 3

to reception, like bride Meredith McKee did by renting them directly from the City of Charlottesville. “Not only was it super fun for our guests to ride in school buses, but also they were much less expensive than a regular bus service,” she says. 4
At the table
We’ll just come out and say it: The winebottle-as-table-number trend is on its way out (if not out already!). For bride Merida Miller’s table numbers, her mom bent wire into the letters “E” and “L,” so when in place, they completed the phrase “Love” on one side of the number card and “Best Day Ever” on the other. Bonus: “I love the shadow in this photo that enhances the E,” Merida says.

Yes, you do need help coordinating your wedding. Here’s why!

It’s 45 minutes before the wedding ceremony. Your perfect up-do is up. Your airbrushed makeup is cover-model worthy. Your bridesmaids are ogling their beautiful bouquets. Your mother helps you slip into your custom-designed wedding gown, carefully laces it up, and is tying the final bow when you hear it—the sound of priceless organza tearing. Your wedding dress just ripped from the waist to the top of the corset. That very scenario happened to one local bride. Fortunately, she’d hired wedding planner Adam Donovan-Groves, who had the situation under control before the bride even knew anything was wrong. “I said, ‘I’ve got this.’ And I sewed her into her gown. You couldn’t even tell anything had happened,” Adam recounts. “Had it just been her and a couple of friends, the stress would’ve been so much higher.” And that, in a nutshell, is why wedding planners are worth their proverbial weight in gold. “We don’t have the emotion invested in the event,” says Adam. “We’ve seen every-
thing that can happen at a wedding and we know how to respond. We have a Plan B and even a Plan C—both of which are as good as Plan A—and we’re ready to put those into place at any moment. We’re the calm person in the room, which lets the bride relax and center herself.”
At your service A wedding planner works for the couple. Forget what the caterer suggests or the venue has in mind, planners will do their best to get the future Mrs. (or Mr.) exactly what she (or he) wants. And because they’re connected within the wedding community, they may be able to pull strings that the client can’t on her own. Adam points out, “We are their voice throughout the wedding.” “We’re an ally,” says Meghan Streit, owner and wedding planner for Shindig Weddings and Events, when describing her role in the process. If someone’s planning a wedding in the area from afar, “we provide boots on the ground and a sanity
check, making sure they don’t get taken advantage of.” She also says wedding planners add value, arranging for the best vendors with the best deals. Most wedding planners offer a choice of packages that include anything from just “day-of ” services to full planning (and a whole lot of options in between). They can accommodate a bride by simply providing vendor lists and hotel choices, or handle everything down to the smallest detail— from setting up appointments to attending meetings with, or on behalf of, the couple. Of course, each planner charges different rates so fees will vary, but expect to spend anywhere from $2,500 for minimum involvement to $8,000-10,000 for a fullservice planner. It’s the most important day of your life, and Meghan says it makes sense to trust a professional to guide you through it. “With any major event in our lives—buying a home or having surgery—you look to someone who does this all the time,” she says. “This is no different.”—Lynn Thorne

Five years in, here’s what’s still useful from a registry It’s easy to go crazy with the scanner when you’re high on your engagement and planning a life together: That’s the throw pillow you’ll rest your head on while you watch movies together; that’s the wine cooler where you’ll store bottles for romantic nights in; that’s the toilet brush holder that’ll...hold the toilet brush. But, ask a real-life bride (like these two C-VILLE Weddings alums, both featured on these pages five years ago), and she’ll say this after five years of marriage: Only choose what you know you’ll use and likely won’t replace yourself as time goes by. In other words, be realistic about your needs. Here are three must-haves and a few things to reconsider when you’re walking down the aisles.

Like most spring brides, Lindsey Kirchoff spent the week before her June 21 wedding habitually checking the weather, fearing the worst: rain. One man’s band A few tips for buying the groom’s ring
Ooohs and aaahs are normal for women’s wedding ring sets, but the same attention isn’t given to men’s wedding bands. In the spirit of gender equality, we spoke with Rob Matthews, store manager of Fink’s Jewelers, about the top five things men should know before buying their bling of wedded bliss.
Mix and match “Traditionally, men and women thought they had to have matching wedding bands. That’s a rarity nowadays,” Matthews says. So go ahead, pick what suits your fancy and forget trying to be ring twinsies.
Size matters Many guys aren’t used to how a ring feels, so they buy it too big—a decision that’s likely to lead to a lost ring. “Fingers expand and contract a thousand times a day,” Matthews says. Go small to be sure you don’t lose your new crown jewel.
Comfort counts Ask if the store has a selection of comfort fit bands. Instead of the band being flat against the finger on the inside, it’s rounded for comfort. “It cushions against the finger, which feels better,” says Matthews.
Heavy metal Men are pretty hard on their jewelry and they need a metal that can last a lifetime. Tungsten is the most popular choice in men’s wedding bands—you can’t cut it or scratch it. Bonus: It’s hypoallergenic, and according to Matthews, “It’s less expensive than gold or platinum.” DOMINIQUE ATTAWAY
High maintenance If you like white gold, be prepared for maintenance. Natural gold is yellow and requires a coating of rhodium to turn it white. Over time that wears off. “Depending on the person, the job they have, if they wash their hands a lot or use a lot of hand sanitizer, it may need to be recoated as frequently as every six months,” Matthews advised.—Lynn Thorne

When it comes to cake trends, what’s hot and what’s frosted? After Kathy Watkins and her now wife moved to Orange, she decided to take a few months off from working before exploring the job market. “I got bored really fast,” she says, and when she saw a sign in a storefront for cake decorating classes, she signed up. “I come from a family of bakers and have a fine arts degree so things started falling into place,” she says. She took Favorite Cakes full-time in 2012 and, since then, has gained exposure locally and nationally (last year Martha Stewart Weddings included her in its list of top pastry pros). We asked her to fill us in on what local brides are asking for this season.—Caite White

THE CAKE
When Sweethaus owner Tara Koenig was asked to meet at Keswick Hall for a private brainstorm (rather than in the shop, as usual) over a cake with an Easton Events client, she got excited. “I knew there was likely a fantastic brainstorm ahead,” she says. As it turned out, the bride had seen an oversize cake in Paris and wanted to recreate it for her wedding. Twelve double barrel (a.k.a. double layer) tiers and 60" later, Jennifer Chuppe had exactly what she envisioned: a sky-high cake with alternating layers of vanilla cookie dough, salted caramel and lemon raspberry. But how? “We built the cake structure in five separate sections, and transported the frosted finished layers to Keswick in that format,” Tara says. From there, Sweethaus cake artist Rebecca Chambers stacked the tiers by climbing a ladder and lifting and placing them with a flat spatula. The top tier was the most challenging. “There was 60" of cake on top of a 30"-high table below her,” Tara says. “She had to climb up over 8’ in the air balancing the top of the cake on spatulas!” Talk about a tall order.—C.W.

Favorite Cakes' Kathy Watkins says brides are still fawning over floral cakes—fresh blooms especially. As for fondant, it provides a blank canvas and lends itself to plenty of possibilities, like elegant (and trending!) gold overlays (below).

Kathy says she’s made more sugar flowers this year than ever before, but fresh flowers (a more cost-effective option) are still the most popular choice with brides.
Kathy is still doing cupcake weddings. “You can dress ’em up or dress ’em down—they taste so good,” she says. Typically, the bride and groom will ask for a small “cutting cake,” too, to make the more traditional first cut. The bottom line? Says Kathy, “Find a nice fresh product that your guests will enjoy and talk about for months to come.”
Frosting While Kathy notes the appeal of fondant (“It’s a canvas with almost limitless creative opportunity...and we have several cake artists in Charlottesville [who are] exceptionally creative wedding cake designers”), most of her clients are looking for simple, textured frostings—soft swirls, ruffles, layers of frosting used like ribbons. And what about no frosting at all? “Naked cakes may be very popular on Instagram but in reality I get very little interest for them,” Kathy says.
Ombre is still in! Kathy says the technique —colored frosting blended from a light shade to a darker, very gradually—is popular. And, back to fondant, gold accents are a hot item this year and, Kathy says, fondant lends itself beautifully to gold overlay.

Sarah Ashton Date of your wedding: October 24, 2014 Groom’s name: Alec Rackish Dress designer: Monique Lhuillier Cost: Retail cost was $13,000 (I did not pay that much!) Alterations: $700. The corset needed to be taken in and the bottom needed to be hemmed. Did you shop around much before deciding? I lived in North Carolina during the time and attempted to go shopping (by myself) in some boutiques in Wilmington. I had no luck and it was very discouraging. I made appointments at two different boutiques in Georgetown (Lovely and Carine’s) the next weekend. I went to Lovely first and fell in love with the designer Sarah Seven. However, before I made any decisions, I went to Carine’s and that is where I found the Monique Lhuillier. I fell in love and so did my mom, sister and bridesmaid, who were with me. Why did you choose it? I had an image in my head of what I was looking for and it exceeded my expectations. When I tried it on—and you always hear this, but I never thought it would happen—I just “knew.”

Favorite detail about it: I loved the full bottom. It was a true Cinderella ball gown. This was important to me because my now-husband is a Marine, so I will have many Marine Corps Balls to wear promlike dresses, but I will never be able to get away with a full, elaborate gown. How it worked out: The full bottom did make the dress heavy. I felt like I had to be cognizant of it slipping down throughout the night. But for being strapless, I thought it held up great. It was more in my head, and at no point was gravity taking its toll.

BEAD DAZZLED Merida Miller Date of your wedding: October 18, 2014 Groom’s name: James Hughes Dress designer: Maggie Sottero Cost: $1,300, which is a heck of a deal considering the beaded detail in the dress.
Alterations: $275. The straps and the bust had to be taken in, along with some tailoring in the waist and underdress lining. A lot of careful hand-beading had to be done after every alteration to make sure the beaded pattern looked uninterrupted.
Did you shop around much before deciding? I started the search 10 months before the wedding; I had convinced myself I was going to be one of those brides who didn’t have a dress the week before because she couldn’t find the perfect one. Of course it was literally the second dress I tried on and I never looked back.
Why did you choose it? I really had no idea what style of dress I was looking for and I wanted to go into my search with an open mind. We pulled a ton of different styles, fits and silhouettes just to play in— when else do you get to play super dress up?! Once I put this dress on I just started dancing and couldn’t stop. It had every element I was looking for and some that I didn’t know I even wanted until that moment. The assistant at the shop insisted I try on the other 10 dresses we pulled just to make sure and I’m glad I did. I never looked back after that day. Favorite detail about it: Every single detail is my favorite detail. I love the low back and the French netting used for the straps. If I have to pick one, it would be the train. I never considered myself much of a train girl but it’s just too elegant and unique.

ding was 1940s rustic glam chic and the dress fit that perfectly. It was so elegant against the rustic Rounton Farm décor and location. I wish we could relive the night over and over. 1. It was the best day ever; 2. For the friends, family and party; and 3. Because I want to wear my dress again and again.

SECOND-HAND NOTIONS Maddy Picker Date of your wedding: May 9, 2015 Groom’s name: Sam Bush Dress designer: The dress was made for my mom in 1985. It was made by my grandmother’s friend, a seamstress for the San Francisco Opera. My mom had a vision for what she wanted, and she and my grandmother shopped for the fabric in San Francisco. Alterations: $650. I worked with a local seamstress, Beth Neville Evans, who I heard of through a friend. She lives in North Garden and I went to her home studio many times over my wedding planning/engagement period to meet with her and do various fittings. I had some ideas for subtle changes I wanted to make to the dress: change the original sleeves, lengthen the dress a bit and remove one of the three original chiffon and lace tiers of the skirt so it was a little less bulky. The dress also
needed a new bodice because the original one was stained. Beth totally understood my vision and appreciated a unique project like this one. Working with her was one of the highlights of wedding planning for me! It was just such a fun, creative project and had such sentimental value to me. Did you shop around before you decided to wear the heirloom? Nope. I honestly didn’t remember my mom’s dress very well before I tried it on, but when I tried it on after getting engaged I immediately fell in love with it. I’ve also just never been a big shopper, and the idea of not having to wedding-dress shop was actually really appealing to me. This felt special and unique. And I loved the idea of my mom personally knowing the woman who made the dress, and me personally knowing the woman working on the dress now. Why did you choose it? What did it mean to you to wear your mother’s dress? I chose it because I loved the feel, structure
and design of the dress. It was almost exactly what I would have chosen if I could make “the perfect dress” for myself. Classic, simple, feminine and unique. The fabric was also gorgeous, and stuff that’s hard to find now in a dress: all silk, silk chiffon, silk tulle and really beautiful lace (and it was extremely well-made). It meant a lot to me to wear the dress my mom wore and a dress that was meaningful to my grandmother as well—I admire and love them both so much! Did your veil belong to your mother too? My mom’s veil was not in great shape, so Beth actually used the fabric and lace from the original skirt (that she removed) to make the veil. Favorite detail about it: The gorgeous lace details. How it worked out: It was a dream. The dress fit perfectly, moved really well and I just felt amazing. It’s a pretty neat experience having something created to fit your body so well—I felt extremely comfortable in it!

He said, she said Will: “I have an incredible memory of meeting Claire at the Coca Cola building in Charlottesville during the annual Best of C-VILLE party. We were introduced to each other really quickly, just a ‘hi,’ handshake and a smile. After that I couldn’t get Claire out of my head. I would see her around Charlottesville with friends, always happy and beautiful, but I couldn’t find a way to approach her. I remember on Halloween seeing her dressed up in a long pink dress running and laughing down the Charlottesville pedestrian mall in a rain storm. A few weeks after that I saw her again and decided I wouldn’t let the opportunity pass me by. I said hello, we started talking, she told me the most hilarious story about herself. I asked if I could buy her a drink, she said yes, and when I turned around to give it to her she was gone. I couldn’t believe it.”
“I found her. And we went on a date the very next week and everything was just effortless.” Claire: “At first, I actually didn’t remember meeting Will at the Coca Cola building. Looking back now, I have this flash of seeing his face as he turned around when a mutual friend tapped him on the shoulder. I do remember meeting him a few months later and I do remember running away when he turned around to buy me a drink. It’s not your typical reaction to a handsome guy, but it was really late at night, suddenly my friends were all gone and I decided I needed to go home. I figured if it was meant to be, he’d find me.” Will: “I found her. And we went on a date the very next week and everything was just effortless.”

arrowing down the look and feel of any occasion is a test—especially a wedding day!—and Claire and Will had as difficult a time as any. They ran through different theme options: Where The Wild Things Are? Boutique hotel? One that combined the beautiful with the beastly? “There were times, especially early on, where our ideas felt scattered and we worried that things wouldn’t come together. We were all over the place,” Claire says. Eventually, a meeting with Dani Antol at Rock Paper Scissors over the paper suite helped focus the concept. “She created a crest for us that we used throughout the wedding,” Claire says. “Shortly after that we abandoned the idea that we needed a theme and decided to focus more on creating a certain feeling using things we are naturally drawn to—we wanted the day to be just as much about our guests as about us.” Will and Claire felt that it was important to include little details for those attending the wedding. In the programs, the couple listed all the cities their guests traveled from and left handwritten notes for each of them at their seats. “We asked ourselves, ‘How do we want our guests to feel?’ We decided upon enchanted and magical, but not in an over-the-top way. After that, decisions relating to the overall look became easier to make.”—Caite White

Flower power Southern Blooms kept with the color story, adorning the wedding with deep pink garden roses, red piano garden roses, red and rust ranunculus, Juliette peach garden roses, Sahara roses, Amnesia roses, amaryllis, gold upright and red hanging amaranthus, deep red peonies, Copper cymbidium orchids, burgundy dahlias, Agonis foliage, seeded and willow eucalyptus, blueberry vibirnum berries and gilded ferns. Says Claire, “No two arrangements were exactly alike and the bridesmaid’s bouquets and floral accessories were made to go with each dress.”
Ladies wear... Claire’s sister, Paige, is a womenswear designer based in New York City, and she custom made each of the bridesmaids’ dresses, spending four months prior to the wedding meeting with each woman and learning her likes and dislikes, searching for fabric and sketching designs. After Claire’s bridal shower, they had a mini fashion show, a few tweaks and, finally, a completed product. “The dresses were absolutely gorgeous and not only went well with the overall wedding aesthetic, they enhanced it,” Claire says.

Treats and eats Because it’s what Claire describes as a “cornerstone” of their relationship, food had to play a key role at the wedding. They hired caterer (and friend) Walter Slawski of The Catering Outfit to handle the meal, which comprised a bouillabaisse incorporating monkfish, lobster, shrimp, roasted fennel, saffron potato, lobster fennel jus and a grilled Albemarle Baking Co. baguette. The second course, a take on surf and turf, used pork belly from Patterson’s Farm and served it with a seared scallop accompanied by Potter’s Craft Cider, braised Swiss chard and Hoppin’ John, a dish typically served in the south for good luck. The final course was served family-style: duck breast from Free Union Grass Farm with mascarpone stone ground grits from Byrd Mill and a root vegetable hash of local turnips, rutabaga, baby heirloom carrots, celery root and parsnips.

A hush fell over the crowd When they found out a county noise ordinance would stop the party at 11pm, the couple decided to get around it by having a silent disco after-party. With a light show, a silent DJ and late-night burgers and truffle fries and, says the bride, “It was one of the best parts of the night, hands down.”

en Costanza and Amy Shopkorn knew they wanted a somewhat rustic vibe for their late summer wedding, so they started with the venue: Panorama Farms in Earlysville provided the ideal backdrop for a few reasons. “It matched our vision perfectly,” Jen says. “As we read about the history of Panorama and its current uses, we felt an even stronger connection. Amy is a runner and Panorama has a certified cross country course.” When they started homing in on the details, they decided to keep it upscale, but still casual. Says Jen, “We never expected our guests to be dressed formally, but we had them wear shorts or whatever else they wanted at the last minute. It was 96 degrees.” They added in sentimental details to personalize the (warm!) day: the favors combined chocolate and coffee (components of their first date); they bought chalkboards on Etsy on which Amy wrote the menu and other details for guests; they tailored the playlist and wrote the ceremony themselves; and they made donations in their guests’ names to the Beagle Freedom Project and Lost Dog Rescue, the organization from which they adopted their dog. All in all, a truly personal day, as it should be. Says Jen, “It just felt like us.”—Caite White

e wanted our wedding to embody all that we love about Charlottesville and Virginia,” says Laura. To that end, they incorporated it wherever they could: bluegrass music from The Bellevue Rhythmaires, plenty of Southern staples on the menu and a classic Virginia country club backdrop (with its view of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Thomas Jefferson-designed front room). But her favorite detail (or, one of them, at least) was the vintage coupe glasses for the champagne bar. Instead of renting new ones, Laura and her mom scoured antique shops for a whole summer, gathering up a collection. “By the time all was said and done, we had purchased them in Dallas, New Orleans, Montgomery, Birmingham, Pensacola, Atlanta, Asheville and Charlottesville!” she says.—Caite White

Ten years in the making It wasn’t until their third year at UVA that Laura and Craig met. A mutual friend set them up on a blind date to Craig’s fraternity function. They had a good time together, but remained friends for the rest of college. After graduation, they were both working in Washington, D.C. and would meet occasionally for lunch. “Things grew over the first few months in D.C.,” Laura says, “and by January after graduation we were dating.” But attending different law schools put a lot of stress on the relationship, and they broke up for two and a half years until the same mutual friend who’d set them up on the blind date hosted his 30th birthday in Charleston. Says Laura, “After that weekend, the rest is pretty much history.”

I
t all started with location. Kendall Priddy and Tito Smith-Harrison knew they wanted to host their spring wedding at her family’s farm, Brushy Hill, and, from there, the whole “farm chic” theme took shape. “We both wanted to be dressed up, but relaxed and comfortable at the same time,” Kendall says. “So all the decor and design of having an outdoor, rustic farm wedding perfectly fit around that idea.” What stands out—in the photos and for the bride—was the décor. “We were adamant about not having a tent and really amping up the outdoor lighting,” Kendall says. They hung chandeliers from the property’s old maple trees and set up plenty of bistro lighting. “The weather turned out perfectly in our favor, making for a magical night.”
Kendall’s mom, Barbara, handled most of the details: She designed the invitation suite herself, using the Waterlogue app (which transforms photos into watercolor images) to replace custom artwork and cut down on costs. She printed and installed envelope liners and assembled the welcome bag and program fans, too. She even did the calligraphy! “I cheated: I used a light box, printed out the full address in a font that I liked, slid it inside the envelope, and traced using my calligraphy nibs and custom mixed ink colors,” Barbara says. “I’m not sure it was a quality that I could get paid for, but it was attractive enough for me and most importantly, my daughter.”— Caite White
