Language is the foundation for learning to read. Practice these 5 Simple Steps for early literacy!

talk

Add details to what your child says. “Yes, there is a bird on that branch. I hear it singing and chirping so happily! The more words a child knows, the easier it becomes to express feelings and thoughts and to follow directions.

sing

this song on a cloudy day to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” When I look into the sky, I can see the clouds go by, They don’t ever make a sound, Letting wind push them around, Some go fast and some go slow, I wonder where the clouds all go.

Tea & Music: Symphony U!

In this age of texting, children need to see you writing throughout the day. Leave notes for family members, write shopping lists and read over them as you shop together. Encourage your child to draw pictures and tell you about them. Write down their descriptions and read over it together.

play

Pretend play is the perfect time to build early literacy skills! Imagine your own family restaurant or grocery store together. Pull out the scratch paper and create the menu or the signs. How much do things cost? Who is the cook? The server? The cashier?
