Winter PROGRAM GUIDE January-April 2023

Reading

The Chattahoochee Valley Libraries have a great way to encourage you to read this holiday season and new year!

Starting December 19 and running through January 31, 2023, readers in the Valley can participate in the 2022-23 Winter Reading Challenge for a chance to win $100 gift cards and more!

Similar to the Libraries’ popular Summer Reading Challenge, the Winter Reading Challenge can be completed by any one at any age. The rules are simple:

For children, read (or be read) 30 books

For older children (who read chapter books), teens and adults, read for 15 hours

You will be able to track your reading one of two ways:

Go to our website CVLGA.org and track your progress online with the BEANSTACK Reading Challenge App! You can use your same account from the Summer Reading Challenge!

Use a printed reading log available at any of our Library branches (or download and print the log from CVLGA.org).

That’s it! One you have hit your goal, stop by your favorite branch of the Chattahoochee Valley Libraries (if you filled out a printed log, bring that with you). We’ll check your log and you’ll be given an entry prize and will be entered into the Grand Prize drawing for a $25 to $100 VISA gift card. LET’S START READING!

Cathy Fussell: Quilts – an NEA Big Read Exhibition

Cathy Fussell, one of the Chattahoochee Valley’s most beloved scholar/artists, has turned her lifelong hobby of quilt-making into an ongoing examination of our area’s history and culture. In her quilts she reflects on and analyzes time, place, family, displacement and diaspora, exploring many of the same themes featured in this year’s NEA Big Read selection The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir by Thi Bui. Join us for this first comprehensive showing of Ms. Fussell’s work before much of it goes on exhibition in museums across the East and Southeast.

Cathy Fussell: Quilts – Opening Reception and Artist Talk – an NEA Big Read program

The public is invited to this opening reception of the exhibition CATHY FUSSELL: QUILTS. The reception will be followed by a presentation by Ms. Fussell where she discusses her influences and inspiration and her works’ connection to the complicated history and culture of Georgia, Alabama and the greater Southeastern United States. Ms. Fussell will also compare and contrast her work with that of our NEA Big Read selection for this year, Thi Bui’s The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir.

We’ll introduce you to poetry broadsides — posters incorporating image and text in interesting ways, which were popular means of expression during the Vietnam War era. NEA Big Read Keynote Events

The Graphic Novel as Art and Literature – an NEA Big Read Program

A tag team of academic superstars from Columbus State University – Professor of Art Orion Wertz and Professor of Writing and McCullers Center Director Nick Norwood – join forces to discuss how the graphic novel has become a prominent and powerful tool for expression by some of our country’s most talented writers and artists. Using our NEA Big Read selection, Thi Bui’s The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir, Wertz and Norwood will show the interplay of visual and literary techniques and how they combine to create an immersive and emotive experience for the reader. An Evening with Author Thi Bui – an NEA Big Read keynote presentation Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet our NEA Big Read author Thi Bui. Her critically-acclaimed, multiple award-winning graphic memoir The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir is the harrowing and moving story of three generations of her family as they hurriedly leave Vietnam at the end of the war to start a new life in America. Ms. Bui will read from her work and discuss her family and her struggle to contain all of their stories into a collected, cohesive whole. Ms. Bui will be available to sign autographs after the presentation. Copies of The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir will be available for purchase.

Discovering Pierce African Cemetery with Mona Pierce

Hear Yamona Pierces’ story of discovering her third great grandparents’ graves in the local Pierce Chapel African Cemetery, which led to a multi-year-long preservation project and the discovery of at least 500 other African Americans and enslaved peoples’ resting places dating back to the 1800s. Mona Pierce is the founder of the Hamilton Hood Foundation, which hopes to “create a model with the hope of empowering others to come together, make their own discoveries, and honor their past.”

Each month is a new theme. Stop by any time to make a themed craft for yourself or one for a community friend. All donated completed crafts will be collected for community distribution.

C.S Lewis Storytime

A beautiful storybook retelling of C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe will be presented. Craft activities and themed refreshments will follow the enchanting storytime. Sat. January 14 | 10:30am

Join the fun with stories, songs, puppets and learn early literacy tips. This beloved Library tradition features the five Simple Steps –Sing, Talk, Read, Write, & Play. These easy practices help prepare young learners for future success.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Read to your baby or child daily with the goal of 1,000 books before they start kindergarten. You can easily reach this goal in less than 3 years by reading just 1 book each night. Pick up a paper log at branches or log your reading using the free Beanstack app.

NEW! Ferst Readers of Muscogee County

Ferst Readers eliminates the key reason why parents do not read to their children by ensuring the availability of quality books in the home. Through this program, children are mailed one book per month from birth until five years of age — completely free of charge.

NEW! Lena Start: Talk Builds Babies’ Brains! (AGES

0-36 MONTHS AND CAREGIVERS)

Interactive talk is a key factor for healthy early brain development! Join this 10-week program to learn fun tips that increase the brain-boosting talk in your child’s daily routine. Families receive personalized feedback weekly from the LENA device.
