ANNUAL REPORT TO OUR COMMUNITY

Carson Valley Medical Center

LETTER

TO THE COMMUNITY As the world of healthcare continues to change around us, one thing remains constant: Carson Valley Medical Center’s dedication to strengthening our community by providing accessible, affordable and high-quality healthcare. We are unwavering in this fact; we are here to serve you, our community. We accomplish that through living our values – respect, integrity, compassion and excellence – in each and every interaction we have with our patients. We are extremely proud of our accomplishments over the past year, many of which you can see in the following pages. Especially notable is the strong support of our community through generous donations to our foundation, our organization’s commitment to community service and giving back to those most in need, and welcoming new healthcare providers to our community to meet the growing demand for primary care physicians. The coming year will undoubtedly bring new headlines about healthcare nationwide and spark much debate – but for us at Carson Valley Medical Center, our mission is clear: to care for your health and wellness. We invite you to come on this path with us as together we build a stronger, healthier community.

Sincerely, Shannon Albert Interim CEO/Director of Development & Outreach Carson Valley Medical Center

CVMC: YOUR COMPREHENSIVE COMMUNITY HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

LE T TER TO OUR COMMUNIT Y Expanded Access: Primary Care In 2017, CVMC added four new primary care providers to its five clinics located around Carson Valley. Additional providers to care for the community mean shorter wait times, convenient scheduling and improved access to care for patients of all ages.

Critical Access: Emergency Room/Hospital CVMC houses a 24/7 emergency room, a 23-bed acute care hospital and an ICU in its main Gardnerville campus building south of town. Our partners at Care Flight are also stationed at CVMC’s main campus when the need for emergency helicopter transport arises.

Convenient Access: Urgent Care The CVMC Urgent Care is located at 897 Ironwood Drive in Minden and can accommodate those issues that aren’t an emergency, but can’t wait for treatment. Since opening in 2014, the CVMC Urgent Care has received more than 19,000 visits. It has extended days and hours beyond a traditional physician’s office and offers X-ray and lab services for patients on-site.

Complete Access CVMC’s wide range of services also includes surgery, advanced diagnostic imaging, a full-service lab, an infusion center, physical and occupational therapy, nutrition counseling, respiratory care, speech therapy, senior mental health and wellness, wound care and occupational health and travel medicine. Specialists including cardiologists, endocrinologists, neurologists and pulmonologists are available via telemedicine so that patients can receive care without the need to travel out of town. 33

MEET

OUR NEW PROVIDERS Kim Chi Nguyen, MD Dr. Nguyen joined the staff of primary care providers at Carson Valley Medical Center in November following a 20-year stay on Maui. She is practicing out of Ironwood Primary Care in Minden. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and received her medical degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. While in Hawaii, she worked in nursing home care, geriatric care and with the developmentally disabled. Prior to that, she worked in outpatient medicine. “I want to know people’s goals for their health and offer my recommendations on how they can get there,” she said. “I view the doctor-patient relationship as more of a collaboration, not just, ‘Here, do this because I say so.’”

James Gocke, APRN Gocke (pronounced Go-Key), brings 22 years of healthcare experience to Carson Valley – including 11 years in emergency medicine. “My favorite role has been in primary care,” Gocke said. “Establishing relationships with folks, trying to keep them on a healthy path.” Gocke, his wife and two sons moved to Carson Valley at the close of August 2017, after he spent more than 40 years in northern Los Angeles County. He attended the University of Southern California and has his board certification with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. He, along with Dr. Nguyen, practices at Ironwood Primary Care.

Lara St. John, PA-C St. John comes to Carson Valley from Incline Village, where she was working for a family practice. “I really liked the rural feel here and it just seemed like a good fit for me,” St. John said. She graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno and attended Touro University in Vallejo, California for her physician assistant studies. St. John is fluent in Spanish and is eager to get to know the community. St. John is practicing at Job’s Peak Internal Medicine & Family Practice and CVMC Senior Care in Gardnerville.

Catherine Fuller, FNP A longtime Carson Valley resident and family nurse practitioner, Fuller’s career has spanned a wide variety of focuses, from physical therapy and public health to obstetrics and teaching, among many other areas. “I love living and working in this community,” Fuller said. “I don’t mind seeing people at the grocery store or the car wash. I’m passionate about taking care of my neighbors, and that’s why I chose to work for Carson Valley Medical Center instead of any place else.” Fuller, who moved to Carson Valley in 1993, has a degree in physical therapy along with her RN and master’s in nursing education. She instructed more than 300 nursing students over the course of six years at Western Nevada College during her career there before going back to school in 2014 to become a family nurse practitioner. Fuller is practicing at Minden Family Medicine.

SERVICES Mobile X-Ray Technology Carson Valley Medical Center recently added a portable X-ray machine to its advanced medical imaging & diagnostics department, which allows for bedside imaging and diagnostics throughout CVMC’s emergency room, acute care hospital and ICU. “For us, it is a state of the art upgrade to our critical services,” CVMC Medical Imaging Manager Michael Jones said. “It affords patients and our physicians immediate access to diagnostic tools that can be used bedside. Now, our physicians will be able to diagnose bedside before the X-ray technician even leaves the room.” The machine will be used in critical and emergency care situations, as well as alleviating the need to physically move a patient when faced with a possible dislocation or fracture. It can also be used to assist in the placement of an internal venous line. Robotic UV Light CVMC’s newest technology is the state-of-the-art Optimum-UV Enlight cleaning system by Clorox Healthcare. This robotic device will use ultraviolet technology to disinfect our operating room following procedures. This cutting-edge system will be an exciting addition to our line of defense, providing patients the safest, cleanest environment possible. The purchase of this new technology was made possible by the CVMC Hospital Foundation.

EEG The CVMC Neurodiagnostics lab has added electroencephalogram (EEG) technology to its array of services. An EEG is a safe, painless test that measures the electrical activity of the brain. It can monitor changes in brain wave activity, which may be helpful in diagnosing epilepsy or evaluating brain tumors, head injuries, sleep disorders and dementia.

In 2017, the CVMC Hospital Foundation received $126,000 in charitable contributions. These funds go directly back into the community by supporting CVMC in the acquisition of life-saving healthcare equipment like the Optimum-UV Enlight system and expansion of healthcare services. Foundation funds will also be directed toward an upcoming expansion of the Minden Family Medicine rural health clinic.

2017 marked the first year the foundation awarded its two scholarship programs designed to assist local students in pursuing careers in healthcare.

Nita Schwartz, MD, Vice Chair

The Journey Begins scholarship ($1,000) goes to a Douglas County high school student pursuing a degree in a healthcare field.

Linda Birdwell

The Journey Continues scholarship ($2,000) goes to a resident of Douglas County who has already completed a year or more of a higher education, healthcare-related degree and is working toward the successful completion of his or her program.

P ink F un d In 2016, the CVMC Foundation established the Pink Fund, dedicated to providing aid for patients receiving care at CVMC facilities for breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Fully funded by community support and donations, 100% of the money raised stays local and impacts the lives of patients within our community. The Foundation was able to provide its first aid package in 2017 and will continue to grow this important program in the coming years.
