T
he Educational Services Office (ESO) is offering classes to help prepare Sailors and Marines to take College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams. CLEP exams provide full college credit in a given subject at participating schools by demonstrating that the test taker has an adequate knowledge of a subject.
“Right now we’re kind of at a lull, so it’s good for people to be able to study, to have an interactive classroom situation where they can work on math or talk about sociology,” said Lt. j.g. Sarah Tyree, one of the tutors. The exams themselves aren’t given on board Nimitz. “They can only be done in port,” said Lt. j.g. Timothy Creen,
who helped organize the effort to find tutors for the classes. “The Navy College Office in Everett and San Diego both offer these tests. But they do require some studying.” Creen, who helped find volunteers to lead the classes, said that passing the tests is an achievable goal. “They’re not easy, but they’re not designed to be so hard that you Continued on page 3

ntelligence Specialist 3rd Class Kenneth L Davis was named Sailor of the Day Oct. 23. Davis is a native of Longview, Wash., and joined the Navy in 2011. He said he is unsure of how long he wants to stay in the military, but hopes to make petty officer second class as soon as he is eligible. Davis also plans on enrolling in the University of Washington and finishing his Bachelor’s degree in marketing. “It’s overwhelming, surprising, and humbling,” Davis said about being named Sailor of the Day. As Red Database Manager, Davis meticulously
maintained the common operational picture by tracking all red forces within 5th, 6th and 7th fleets. As a member of the Ship’s Nautical or Otherwise Photographic Interpretation and Examination (SNOOPIE) team, he conducted photographic intelligence collection during eight strait transits and multiple ad hoc evolutions providing critical threat identification and characterization to warfare commanders. Davis also earned more than a dozen “outstandings” and “excellents” on multiple zone inspections on the 32 spaces he maintains aboard the ship.

couldn’t do them,” he said. Tyree shares her knowledge of mathematics during her sessions. “Lt. Creen sent an email out to a bunch of the DIVOs and asked if they wanted to volunteer to help tutor for the CLEP preparation program,” said Tyree. She says that by providing a group setting, the classes can help those who might be in need of a different study environment to help them succeed. “It’s good for people to be able to have an interactive classroom situation where they can work on math or talk about sociology,” said Tyree. “Otherwise you’re just sitting there looking at books by yourself,” she said. Each class will have a tutor who will help the group study ses-
sion prepare for the exam. The classes are also a great way to prepare for college placement tests, such as the SAT and ACT. Airman Apprentice Alexandra Boraas isn’t sure what she’d like to get her degree in, but knows the CLEP exams will help her tackle the basics of her college education. “Either law enforcement or teaching, I haven’t decided yet, so I want to get my general education done with,” she said. Participation is open to anyone interested in attending and is limited only by space. The classes

USS RENTZ RESCUES FISHING VESSEL IN DISTRESS AFTER 10 DAYS LOST AT SEA USS RENTZ, At Sea (NNS) -Guided-missile frigate USS Rentz (FFG 46) and embarked U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) conducted a Safety-of-Life-at-Sea operation rescue Oct. 20-21 for a fishing vessel, 200 nautical miles off the coast of Ecuador in distress and stranded for 10 days. The crew of the 14 meter vessel and four other small crafts in tow, had been without fuel or food prior to Rentz’ arrival. The distressed vessel was spotted early Sunday morning, Oct. 20 by Rentz’ forward lookouts, who reported the small craft roughly 6,000 yards forward of the ship’s position. The ship swiftly responded and launched a rigidhull inflatable boat to investigate the situation with embarked U.S. Coast Guard LEDET personnel. During the two-day rescue operation, LEDET personnel discovered that the vessel and five Ecuadorian nationals aboard had been struck by heavy weather, disorienting the crew and setting the small vessel 100 nautical miles offcourse. We do so with the utmost pride and professionalism, and it is our duty to assist those in need on the high seas when the time comes. Rentz is currently conducting counter transnational organized crime operations in the 4th Fleet Area of Operations as part of Operation Martillo which began in 4
