BOMBS AWAY CREW HAS “BLAST” AT AIR SHOW Story by MCSN (SW) Kole Carpenter
Nimitz hosted an air show, dubbed the “Bomb Derby,” Sept. 28 featuring aircraft from all squadrons in embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11. In a display of power and precision, pilots from the “Black Knights” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 154, the “Argonauts” of VFA 147, the “Blue Diamonds” of VFA 146, the “Death Rattlers” of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 323, the “Wallbangers” of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron
(VAW) 117, the “Gray Wolves” of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 142, the “Indians” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 6, the “Wolf Pack” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 75, and the “Providers” of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 30 performed aerial stunts for Sailors and Marines on board. viation Support Equipment Technician 3rd Class Matthew Collier, a native of Greensboro, N.C., was named Sailor of the Day, Sept. 30. Collier works in the IM-4 Division of Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department. He said he joined the Navy in March 2009, as an opportunity to find a new crowd to spend time with, and also to experience a maturity boost. “I was surprised at how supportive everyone around the ship has been, especially considering that morale is kind of low right now,” Collier said. “That made me really happy.” Having been on board for less than a year, Commanding Officer Capt. Collier has been very productive in his department. He contributed to 1,200 maintenance man-hours, during which he completed maintenance on 1,620 support equipment items. His dedication helped IM-4 maintain a 94 percent equipment availability rate in support of combat flight operations. Collier also trained and qualified 15 work center personnel on proper maintenance procedures through a comprehensive Support Equipment Tire and Wheel training program he instituted in his division. For Sailors hoping to be named Sailor of the Day, Collier encouraged them to not give up on their departmental and shipboard qualifications.

perched on parked aircraft like they were high school bleachers. The theme from the film “Top Gun” blasted out of the loudspeakers to kick off the event. “This is very interesting,” said Chief Intelligence Specialist Jill Holliger. “I’ve never had this opportunity before, and I’m glad I have. This is my first ship, and I get to have all this fun for the first time. Twenty-one years, and this is the first time. I saw the Blue Angels perform, but I wasn’t floating around.” Fighter jets flew in perfect unison, erupting out of the distance, and cutting through the sky faster than sound. They covered the length of the gigantic ship in a heartbeat, and were silent as they hurled past. The slicing wave of sound from their engines was left in the dust. And just as the earsplitting surge of sonic energy hit the audience on deck, the jets rocketed skyward, with the air visibly breaking over their steel panels in white plumes until they were lost in the afternoon sky. “I’m having a blast out here,” Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Kyle Tomlin shouted over the roaring jet engines. adorned with their signature suit of black armor could be seen knighting crew members and waving his sword in the air with a battle cry as his squadron passed over. Two crew members from Destroyer Squadron 23 supported the “Little Beavers” by dressing in matching beaver costumes. “This was cool,” said Aviation Electronics Technician 3rd Class Coty Emerson when the demonstration ended. “It really broke up the pace of deployment.”

KEEP WHAT YOU EARN DESTRUCTIVE DRINKING CAN RUIN YOUR CAREER Story by Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs

our Sailors shared their personal stories on video recently of how alcohol incidents impacted their careers and the importance of drinking responsibly, a Navy Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (NADAP) official said Sept. 27. The first video testimonial was released Aug. 29 and features Electronics Technician 2nd Class Michael Palfrey from Naval Base San Diego answering the question, “What does the phrase ‘Keep What You’ve Earned’ mean to you?” Palfrey reveals the poor decision he made while drinking that adversely impacted his career. He provides advice for others on how to drink responsibly. “Someone pushed a beer in my face and I said, ‘Why not? The night’s over,’” said Palfrey, “and the rest was a blur. That moment when the cuffs went on, I just kind of sobered up and went ‘This is not real. This did not just happen.’” Palfrey decided to participate in the “Keep What You’ve Earned” campaign and share his story so other Sailors can learn from his mistakes. He reminds Sailors that although it may be a one-time thing, irresponsible decisions regarding alcohol can lead to severe career consequences. “I had all of these things going for me a year ago, and now they’re all gone,” Palfrey said. “It’s not just
the financial costs and where they hit you in the wallet.” Palfrey wound up seeking the help he needed and received tremendous support from his command leadership, including James Queen, command Drug and Alcohol Program Advisor (DAPA), Training Center San Diego. Queen supported Palfrey throughout treatment, including referring him to the Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program. In the video, Queen says the “Keep What You’ve Earned” campaign underscores how hard Sailors work to make rank and make their family and their community proud, and that it’s not worth it to throw it away for a couple drinks. Palfrey’s story is one of four being released as part of the “Keep What You’ve Earned” campaign.
