QUALIFICATION

Story by MCSA Kelly M. Agee

HE MOST IMPORTANT PART ABOUT being a well rounded Sailor is being up to date on qualifications, and on board Nimitz time is running out. Some of the qualifications Sailors should be getting while underway are enlisted surface warfare specialist (ESWS), enlisted aviation warfare specialist (EAWS), damage control (DC) specific and maintenance material and management (3M) qualifications. It’s important for Sailors to get their warfare qualifications not only because it is mandatory, but also because it gives Sailors a sense of pride. “Getting your ESWS shows professionalism

and pride in being a Sailor,” said Senior Chief Yeoman David Garcia, head coordinator of the ESWS program. “When people see that warfare qualification on your uniform they are going to think, ‘this Sailor knows every single component on Nimitz.’” ESWS and EAWS qualifications are important to get while underway because it’s easier to get personnel qualification standards (PQS) signed at sea, which needs to be signed off before Sailors are able to take the ESWS or EAWS test. “The wealth of knowledge on Nimitz while on deployment is so extreme that you’re bound to Continued on page 3

Sailor of the Day

Aviation Machinist’s Mate 3rd Class Randall M. Nazaryk, from Denver, was selected as Sailor of the Day Sept. 3. “It feels good,” said Nazaryk. “I don’t feel like I work harder than anyone else in my shop. I try to be humble about it, but it’s cool to be recognized.” As Plane Captain and Landing Signalman Enlisted for Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 6, Nazaryk expertly performed 75 daily and turnaround inspections, 73 seven day special inspections, 60 preflight inspections, and more than 150 aircraft moves, directly contributing to a 99 percent sortie Commanding Officer Capt. Jeff Ruth

completion rate for all strike group and air wing tasking. For any others looking for the same recognition, Nazaryk offered words of encouragement. “It’s what you signed up for, might as well get all you can out of it.” Additionally, Nazaryk’s outstanding training techniques and mentorship led to the qualification of three Plane Captains, two Landing Signalmen Enlisted, five Brake Riders, and five Fuel Surveillance qualified personnel.

Deployment is also the best time to buckle down and obtain primary warfare qualifications because of the amount of time Sailors spend on the ship while on deployment. “Out to sea we are on the ship 24/7, so make time while we are on the ship,” said Garcia. “It’s beneficial for Sailors to do it on deployment especially right now because when we get back to Everett we go on POM leave and the holidays are coming up.” Other important qualifications to get while underway are the DC specific qualifications. “Sailors need to know what they are doing to step up and fight the casualties,” said Damage Controlman 3rd Class Coy Perkins. “It’s really impressive if Sailors get qualified outside of their rate. Your fellow shipmates can look up to you, and if they have a simple question about DC they can ask you about it.” 3M qualifications are also crucial to a Sailor’s success and to the success of Nimitz’ mission. According to Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Christopher Miguel, departmental 3M assistant for Medical Department, deployment is the best time to get qualified.

If Sailors get their 3M qualifications now they are becoming a more vital part of the ship’s mission. “If you look at it as a bigger picture you are a big part of this war on terror. By doing maintenance you contribute. Even if it’s a small thing such as maintaining a small piece of equipment, it is vital to that corrective effort,” said Miguel. While on deployment, most Sailors have enough time to get their qualifications. Sailors should take the time to get qualified not only because it looks great on evaluations but because every single qualification, no matter how small it may seem, helps with the mission.

n Aug. 9, the Pacific Fleet Dental Officer, Capt. Mark S. Quagliotti, stepped on board to assume the responsibilities of the ship’s Dental Officer (DENTO). Quagliotti, affectionately known as “Capt. Q” around Dental, grew up in Brownton, W.Va., and currently lives in Bridgeport, W.Va. He and his family have been Mountaineer fans for generations. He received a baccalaureate degree in 1980 from West Virginia University and a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the School of Dentistry in 1985. Upon graduating, he entered the Navy as a lieutenant in the Dental Corps utilizing the Direct Accession Program. To name just a few places, his 28 years of service include the World War II era battleship USS Iowa (BB 61) until her decommission in 1990; Fleet Hospital Five in Al Jubayl, Saudi Arabia, during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm; Dental Officer for the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) from 2003 to 2005 where he served with our current Commanding Officer, Capt. Jeff Ruth, and Executive Officer, Capt. John Cummings, at the same time; and Fleet Dental Officer assigned to commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, as well as the force Dental Officer, commander, Submarine Force U.S. Pacific Fleet from 2010 until checking on board 5

Nimitz. Quagliotti’s philosophy of leadership echoes Capt. Jeff Ruth’s: every member of the crew is a team member with a voice and something to contribute. Just ask his dental staff and they can tell you how he approaches leadership as a mentor and servant, investing into his junior Sailors and officers. He attributes these qualities to his heroes in life. “I’m a firm believer that everyone should have heroes,” said Quagliotti. “If there’s anything good in me, it comes from my parents.” Quagliotti said his father was a World War II veteran and a coal miner who prompted his sons to receive college educations. All of his brothers have served in the military as officers. When asked what his favorite command has been, Quagliotti replied, “After 28 years of service, I think the tour you are on should be the best tour ever. I’m very excited to be here as I continue to tell people, ‘this is a mature carrier.’” From his personal bio, his decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (two Gold Stars), Navy Commendation Medal (three Gold Stars), and the Navy Achievement Medal (two Gold Stars), as well as numerous unit commendations and campaign medals.
