Story and Photo by MC3 Jennifer Fournier even TR Sailors nearly lost their lives earlier this year. They were overcome by toxic gas while spraying out a space on the ship. A few of them passed out, before another shipmate outside of the space donned his Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). He then entered that space and helped evacuate the seven Sailors who were not wearing the proper personnel protective equipment (PPE). They could have died that day. The ship’s Material, Maintenance and Maintenance (3M) program is one of the systems to keep that from happening. Preventative maintenance system (PMS) is the core of the ship’s Material, Maintenance and Management program and is formulated from years of successes and failures all to ensure optimum safety. “MRCs are written in blood,” said Machinist Mate 1st Class Kenneth Jackson. “Every caution and warning inscribed on the MRC came from some poor Sailor’s misfortune.” 3M is also important to ensure that potentially life-saving equipment is in proper working order. Preventative maintenance is performed on everything to fire extinguishers to quick-actingwatertight doors. “I have been in the Damage Control Petty Officer (DCPO) shop for almost a year now,” said Electrician’s Mate 3rd Class Emmanuel Uzoh. “As time has gone on and we have gone underway, I have realized how important it is to make sure all of our damage control fittings are up to date and checked regularly.” Equipment may often fail. It is the job of 3M to prevent this from happening. Sailors are given a step-by-step guide on how perform each bit of maintenance. Not following every step could result in disaster. “It all comes down to preventative maintenance,” said Uzoh. “If

you rush through a check on CO2 bottle and give half the effort, then when you need to fight a fire it might not work the way you need it to. That would delay the ability to put out the fire, in that time the fire could just spread and spread. That can be dangerous and cost the Navy millions of dollars in damage.” 3M is the Navy’s safeguard against dynamic, and sometimes dangerous, at-sea operations. Sailors contribute to the combat readiness of the ship and the wellbeing of their shipmates by completing all maintenance in a safe and effective manner.

A Degree at Sea

She yearns for sleep, but she has a school assignment due the next day and she has another watch in six hours. Genna decides to finish her assignment and email it ahead of schedule, then sleep before her next watch. Operations Specialist 2rd Class Genna Maratita balances the lifestyle of a Sailor and full time college student. Juggling both school and work can be a lot, said Maratita, who works in the Operations department aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). The ship can lack necessities she needs for school while out to sea. Slower internet due to lower bandwidth while underway can prevent her from turning in her assignments on time. So she completes them the day before the deadline. “Some days are frustrating like right now, because I just made E-5,” she said. “We’re writing evaluations. I still have to do my collateral (duties), on top of daily work duties the division requires, on top of going to school and more. It’s just trying to find time. I try to do things efficiently. The faster I get it done, the faster and longer I get to sleep.” Maratita is currently working on her bachelor’s degree in business administration and marketing. She has a 3.8 grade point average, and intends to finish her degree before the end of her tour onboard Theodore Roosevelt. After sea duty Maratita plans to pursue a new degree in graphic design while on shore duty. The education and degree gives her the opportunity to choose what she wants to do for her career. “I like having all the windows open, versus having all the windows closed and having one door open,” said Maratita. “I can choose if I wanted to go officer, if I want to reenlist or I can choose to get out and get a job with my degrees.”

Operations Specialist 2nd Class Genna Maratita works on a school assignment after coming off of watch aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). Maratita has been enrolled in college as a fulltime student for the past year and a half. Maratita said that with proper time management one will achieve their goals and things will fall into place. She envisions a bigger picture that plays as a constant reminder to rekindle her passion, despite a full schedule and obstacles. “I have a lot of self motivation because I know what I want,” she said. “Ultimately, I want to own my own business in graphic design.” Maratita is proof that with proper time management, it is possible to receive an education with a hectic Navy lifestyle. She makes it work because of her vision of success and opportunity.
