ailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) spent Halloween with Bully the Moose, the ship’s mascot. Bully, along with Megan Villapudua, the ship’s funboss, walked about the decks judging the various spaces decorated for Theodore Roosevelt’s Spook Your Spaces Halloween decoration competition. “I was pretty happy because I love Teddy Bears, and he was like a giant one,” said Chief Hospital Corpsman Alexis Alvarado. “It was my first time seeing him, it was pretty cool.” Bully greeted the Sailors, handed out candy and played practical jokes on Sailors. “Contests like this really do break up the monotony of an underway,” said Villapudua. “It allows the crew to realize some of that creative energy and get to hang out with Theodore Roosevelt’s mascot.” Bully the Moose is the ship’s mascot in honor of President Roosevelt’s Bull Moose Party, which he formed for his unsuccessful third run for president. Theodore Roosevelt is currently underway conducting carrier qualifications.

Handling the Flight Deck

he aircraft handling officer looks out onto the flight deck, and he sees a complex work of art. In his mind, he is the painter, and the flight deck is his canvas. The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt’s (CVN 71) aircraft handling officer is in charge of the ship’s flight deck. He tracks the positions of his personnel and directs the complex movement of aircraft on the flight deck. “Flight Deck Control is responsible for the safe parking of aircraft once they land,” said Lt. Cmdr. Marvin Harris, the Theodore Roosevelt’s aircraft handling officer. “We also perform the safe moving of the aircraft prior to the launch.” The flight deck requires precision and attention to detail. Everyone must know their part and be ready to adjust quickly when problems arise. “One person not knowing their job can cause a domino effect and can cause an accident, or worse, cost someone their life.” said Harris. The handler receives constant updates from the petty officers in charge of each flight deck section, assessing the position of each aircraft. Theodore Roosevelt is currently underway conducting carrier qualifications.
