Sailors participate in a foreign object debris (FOD) walkdown on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). FOD walkdowns clear objects that may get stuck in jet and prop engines and cause damage. Theodore Roosevelt is underway conducting carrier qualifications.

oreign object debris (FOD) walkdown is not only a safety evolution, it is also an opportunity for Sailors to come out and get to know one another. FOD is any type of debris or object that could possibly damage jet engines, rotors or aircraft during flight operations. During FOD walkdown, Sailors form a line spanning the width of the flight deck and walk from the fantail to the bow searching for FOD. “This is always an all-hands evolution,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Robert Robinson, from Air department’s V-1 division. “If FOD got into the engine of one of these aircraft, then it could end up costing the Navy millions of dollars and possibly someone’s life.” During FOD walkdown, the ship typically plays music on the 5MC announcement system while Sailors hand pick debris off the flight deck. Lastly, Sailors sweep the deck with large magnets looking for metallic objects. “It’s a team effort. It brings everyone together,” said Robinson. “It’s not necessarily a social hour, but it’s a good opportunity for the squadrons and ship’s company to get to know one another.” FOD walkdown is conducted every day in the hangar bay at 8:45 a.m. and 7:15 p.m. and on the flight deck at 10:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. when aircraft are not flying. Theodore Roosevelt is currently underway conducting carrier qualifications.

TR Decorates for Halloween

ailors aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) participate in a Spook Your Space Halloween decorating competition sponsored by Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR). The competition is an opportunity for Sailors to show off their creative side and have fun by decorating their spaces for Halloween. Sailors can pick up supplies from MWR and use their own supplies and resources to decorate their department’s doors, compartments and p-ways. Supply department’s S-13 division took the opportunity to be resourceful by making a mummy with old vacuum filters. “Basically this whole thing is made up of everything that we had in the back to throw away,” said Logistics Specialist 1st Class Brent Lough from S-13 division. “So we figured we’ll make something out of it.” S-13 broke up their steady flow of work to show off their skills and have a little fun by spending a few hours decorating their space. “I think it’s good for the morale of our guys and to get rid of old filters so we don’t have to throw them away,” said Lough. Judges will evaluate spaces in the categories of spookiest, best theme and most overall points. The winners of each category will receive $100 in divisional funds. Decorations must be removed by Nov. 2.

YOURNAVY IN THE NEWS Dealing with BUPERS On-line Outages From Chief of Naval Personnel Public Affairs Many Internet-based applications that support personnel actions associated with Navy Personnel Command (NPC) continue to experience downtime while the Navy works to enhance its network reliability and security, officials said Oct. 28. These actions include BUPERS Online (BOL) access and applications for selection boards, record maintenance, retirements and fleet reserve processing among others. Workarounds for some BOL applications are in place while the enhancements are ongoing. BOL has switched to CAC-only access, and currently the Physical Readiness Information Management System (PRIMS) is the only application that is accessible. The exact timeline for the restoration of other offline applications is still being determined, but Sailors should be aware that it could take until the end of the calendar year. Commands are reminded that they still must continue to track Individual Personnel Tempo (ITEMPO), and that workarounds for reporting ITEMPO were provided directly to the commands.

Those impacted by these system outages may contact the NPC Customer Service Center (CSC) at 1-866-U-ASK-NPC (1-866-827-5672) or CSCemail@navy.mil for hands-on assistance.

Wounded Warrior Shares Story During Annual Disability Employment Awareness Month By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Chris Fahey and Builder Constructionmam Nathan Carrasco, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 3 Public Affairs

Handpicked from a group of construction veterans, a 21-year old, female Seabee from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 3 quarterbacked a joint team of U.S., Timorese and Australian engineers to the successful completion of a 10-day, $30 thousand project, Oct. 18. Builder 3rd Class Morgan Rego - who joined the Navy less than two years ago - presented her team’s completed 15,000-liter fuel facility a full two days early to Timor-Leste Defense Force (F-FDTL) Motor Pool Commander J. Da Silva, marking her first success as the most junior project supervisor in the history of NMCB 3. “I was really nervous to be in charge of this project, but when the crane placed the diesel tank in place, I felt very proud of what we had accomplished,” Said Rego during the official ribbon cutting ceremony. “Working as a team with two other nations’ militaries as well as our Marine Corps counterparts makes the accomplishment very special.” Rego’s leadership sprung at a very critical time. The stateof-the-art fueling facility needed built in order for NMCB 3’s construction civic action detail (CCAD) and engineers from the F-FDTL, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and Marine Corps to continue work on a new $1.5 million, 3,000 square-foot military headquarters. The team couldn’t halt construction on the million dollar project, and as such, was

facing a $5,000 charge in penalties each day the fuel facility remained delayed. With this, Rego was called to the front. “I needed someone who could make sure that all the critical project milestones were met in a timely fashion,” said ADF Royal Australian Engineer and Sapper 13 Officer-inCharge Warrant Officer Bill Fry. “Rego has impressed me with her performance as a crew leader and a mentor on the Sapper 13 joint exercise. I knew she was perfect for the job.”
