heodore Roosevelt’s 2014 Family and Friends Day Cruise will take place Wednesday, the 27th of August. We will depart Naval Station Norfolk at 7:30 a.m. Boarding will begin at 4:00 a.m. with the expectation that all guests will be aboard by 7 a.m. Family and Friends Day Cruise will take place on a normal workday. Guests should expect heavy traffic when traveling to Naval Station Norfolk and should plan for 15 to 20 minute delays on I-564.

Once you have completed this check-in process, guests and their sponsors will proceed up one of two brows located on aircraft elevator 2. Once aboard you are free to move about the Hangar Bay. Food and refreshments will be located in Hangar bay 2.

While TR does have top notch medical facilities and personnel, for the safety of all, guests with the following medical conditions will not be permitted to board: coronary heart disease When entering the base, guests that are riding in a vehicle with symptoms, heart attack within the last six months, epiwith an individual who possesses a valid DoD ID card (CAC, De- lepsy, active TB, hepatitis, chicken pox or other communicable pendent or Retired) may enter any open gate at Naval Station disease, severe arthritis, severe asthma or severe restrictive Norfolk. We ask for your patience. Parking for Family and Friends Day will be in the parking lots located across from Pier 12 (see maps on the back page). USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT’S SAFETY FIRST BRIEF Shipboard life is subject to hazardous working conditions. The fact that the ship is a constantly moving platform further contributes to a hazardous environment. For the safety of guests attending this Family and Friends Day Cruise, the following general safety standards are provided and are applicable to all shipboard operations and spaces. GENERAL SHIPBOARD SAFETY STANDARDS Compliance with the following requirements will help prevent accidents and injuries: 1. Stay with your sponsor/guide unless on part of the unescorted tour route. 2. Do not attempt to use ladders unless physically capable of doing so. If you have any doubts, notify your sponsor or guide immediately. 3. Watch your head and step at all times. The ship is full of “knee-knockers” and “head-bangers.” These include higher than normal steps up to the brow, pipes in the overhead, low doorways and overheads, high door thresholds, metal ladders, cable lifelines, bitts, cleats, lines, chains, cables and hoses on the decks. 4. Keep aware of your surroundings at all times. Visitors to the ship have been injured when they were distracted by events going on around them and failed to pay attention to their own safety. 5. Dress appropriately. No skirts, high heels, flip flops, sandals, or open-toed shoes. 6. Always move up or down inclined ladders with at least one hand on the railing. Never slide down inclined ladders or take multiple steps at one time. Do not move between decks using access trunks and vertical ladders. 7. Horseplay is prohibited onboard the ship. 8. Remove rings, watches, key rings, and other items that may become entangled or caught. 9. Walk; don’t run in passageways, hangar bays, and on the flight deck. 10. Always be cautious when nearing a corner – expect someone to be coming from the other direction. 11. Always know the location of family members and guests, especially children under the age of sixteen. Sponsors must keep track of younger children and keep them away from the edges of the ship. 12. Smoke only in designated areas and only during authorized periods. 13. NEVER lean on or stand on a safety railing. 14. Do not wear sunglasses inside the skin of the ship or where darkened conditions


exist. 15. Be cautious around hatches, doors, knee-knockers, and overall protruding objects which may cause injury/ accidents. 16. Observe all personal protective equipment requirements such as the wearing of hearing protection while on the flight deck during flight operations. 17. Promptly inform sponsor/ guide of any unsafe conditions discovered. 18. Be aware of decks that have obstacles and materials causing slippery conditions, particularly if visiting industrial production work areas. 19. Remain clear of shipboard electrical equipment such as outlets and fuse boxes. 20. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated to combat the effects of high temperatures and humidity. FLIGHT DECK SAFETY STANDARDS Carrier Aviation is an amazing event to witness and undoubtedly most guests will want to be on the flight deck to observe flight operations. The flight deck is potentially the most dangerous area of the ship, so while touring the flight deck and when flight operations are in progress, it is essential to adhere to the following safety standards. 1. Do not bring items such as hats, bags, cups, and soda cans to the flight deck or observation decks (vulture’s row). These can cause damage to aircraft and flight deck equipment or injury to personnel if they are lost, misplaced, dropped or left unattended. 2. Wear your supplied hearing protection while aircraft and support equipment are operating. 3. Stand clear of catapults. They are steam powered and generate high temperatures. 4. Use extreme caution while walking in the vicinity of arresting gear cables. These cross deck pendants lie across the landing area and present a trip hazard. 5. Be aware of moving support equipment such as: tow tractors, fire trucks, forklifts and cranes. 6. Stand clear of aircraft elevators and their safety stanchions while in operation. 7. In the unlikely event of an accident or emergency, don’t panic, follow all instructions of flight deck personnel and exit the flight deck calmly and quickly. Please be aware of the unique nature of the ship and potential for injury if you are not careful. The ship is not unnecessarily unsafe or hazardous, but unfamiliarity with normal operating conditions can contribute to accidents and injuries. Adherence to the above safety standards will ensure a safe and enjoyable cruise for all.


All hands are reminded that Family & Friends Day visitors are not authorized in Restricted Areas. Specifically, main propulsion spaces, the pilot house (bridge) and command/ control stations, weapons magazines, armories, and classified areas are off limits. Security Protocols 1. Base access for guests without a DoD CAC will be via Gate 2 (Hampton Blvd and Admiral Taussig Blvd). 2. All personnel must have a ticket and photo ID. 3. Guests shall stay with their sponsor while on board TR. 4. You will not be allowed to carry bags (duffle, gym, luggage, backpacks, large purses) on board. 5. Only small purses and camera bags will be allowed on board. No backpacks, beach bags, coolers or chairs will be allowed. 6. All personnel are subject to inspection prior to boarding the ship. 7. Keep your personal belongings on you at all times and do not leave them unattended at any time. 8. Weapons are not allowed on board TR (knives, firearms, etc..). 9. No illegal drugs are allowed to be brought on board TR. 10. All prescription drugs brought on board should be properly labeled. 11. Pictures are not allowed in restricted spaces. 12. Family & Friends Day guests are not authorized in restricted areas. 13. Proper civilian attire is required. 14. Closed toe shoes are required. Sandals, flip-flops and heels are not authorized footwear on board. 15. No snacks or beverages will be allowed to be brought on board. 16. Plugging any personal electronic devices (i.e. iPhones, iPads, cameras, etc.) into a government computer for charging, downloading, or any other purpose is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

NAVAL STATION GATE INFO: When entering the base, guests that are riding in a vehicle with an individual who possesses a valid DoD ID card (CAC, Dependant or Retired) may enter any open gate at Naval Station Norfolk. Naval Station gates 3 and 5 are open 24 hours a day. Those guests that are not riding with someone with a valid DoD ID themselves MUST enter through Gate 2 ( corner of Admiral Taussig and Hampton Blvd’s). Gate 2 will open no later than 3:30 a.m. on the 27th.

PARKING INFO: Enter through Gate 2 (corner of Admiral Taussig Blvd. and Hampton Blvd). Gate 2 will open no later than 3:30 a.m. on the 27th. Once through the gate, drive straight on Maryland Avenue until reaching a traffic light at Massey Hughes Drive. Turn left. On your right side, you will pass soccer fields. After the soccer fields, turn right into the parking lots. Parking for Friends and Family Day will be in the parking lots located directly in front of Pier 12.

1. Take 1-64 East/West toward Norfolk 2. At exit 276, take ramp right for I-564 toward Terminal Blvd/Naval Base 3. Follow signs to Naval Station Norfolk. Enter base via Gate 3 or Gate 2

Gate 5: 1. Exit out of parking right on Massey Hughes Dr. 2. At stop light take Right onto Maryland Ave. 3. Take Right at Morris St. 4. Take first Left and follow to B Ave. 5. At B Ave, take Left through Gate 5. Gate 3: 1. Exit out of parking right on Massey Hughes Dr. 2. Follow Massey Hughes Dr. to second traffic light, Take Right 3. Follow straight through Gate 3.
