Letter From The Editor…….

This month's letter is a little hard to write. Why, you ask? Because we at CV Northwest have friends and family who have seen the worst that life has to offer, and they are constantly on our minds and in our prayers. We aren't sure why at THIS moment we think of them, but as I write this column they are at the forefront of my mind, and I wanted to send them our best wishes; to our friend battling throat cancer, and so far winning, to our friend whose daughter was in an awful car crash with major injuries, to our friend whose niece has terminal cancer, to our friend whose daughter lost everything in a house fire. It is a testament to their resolve, to their strength, that despite these circumstances they soldier on, smiling as best as they can, intent on fighting for happiness, taking it for themselves - it is inspiring to their friends and loved ones not affected (although who isn't when a loved one is?) to feel the warmth in their hearts, to offer them solace with hugs of best wishes and support. We at CV Northwest Magazine offer our thoughts and prayers to all our friends and family members who are set upon by life, with every level of love and respect we can give.

Old School Is Always Better…...

Few Roadster Shows embody the perfect blend of antique and new cars or trucks. The Portland Roadster show is one of those shows that can pull it off and make you want to come back the following year just to see what new things they added or to see if your favorite make, model and year is on display again. I found that a large number of these cars had either been in the family for some time or had been the talk at the dinner table because someone out ran the local sheriff with a trunk full of moonshine or was in the backseat with Bobby-Sue at the local drive in. The dedication that these owners have for these perfect ‘BlastFrom-The-Past’ pieces of history are something that you do want your kids to learn about. The beauty of this local car show is that you get a taste of the local community and its businesses. If you're a fan of cars, especially those of the classic '50s and '60s vintage, then the car shows held at the Expo is a must see. My personal favorites are the Hot Rod style cars that our Dads and Grandpas built in the garage and drove to the local drive-in or diner on the weekend. Whatever your favorites are, classic car shows are a nice dose of nostalgia -- a time when cars were cars, cruising was safe and SUV wasn't a ubiquitous acronym. If you didn’t get the chance to bless your own eyes with these perfect machines this year, we hope you wake up next year and get out of the house to see them and talk with the owners.

Too Little, Too Late A guy is at the Pearly Gates, hoping to be admitted, and St. Peter says to the guy, "I can't see that you did anything really good in your life, but you never did anything bad either. I tell you what, if you can tell me one really good deed that you did, you're in." So the guy says, "Once I was driving down the road and saw a gang of bikers assaulting this poor girl. So I pulled over, got out my car, grabbed a tire iron and walked straight up to the gang's leader--a huge ugly guy with a studded leather jacket, bald head but with hair all over his body, and a chain running from his nose to his ear. Undaunted, I ripped the chain out of his nose and ear and smashed him over the head with the tire iron. Then I turned around and, wielding my tire iron, yelled to the rest of them, 'You leave this poor, innocent lady alone! You're all a bunch of sick, deranged animals! Go home before I teach you all a lesson in pain!'" Impressed, St. Peter says, "Really? I can't seem to find this in your file. When did this happen?" "Oh, about two minutes ago."

SIN NEWS LETTER: NOTE: these bios are meant to be fun and are listed for amusement, please accept them for what they are, which is tongue in cheek. This band is a group of serious professionals during the week, but assume their stage personas after quitting time on Friday. They love music, they loving having fun, and try to make things just a bit left of center.

Rumored to be the love child of a famous drummer & a groupie, Tommy "Big Stix" grew up traveling with a team of roadies and playing bongos for $1 a song. Accidentally left in the men’s room at the Whiskey, Tommy took to the corner of Sunset Blvd & Clark Street to survive, pounding out beats on grease buckets. His driving sound would drown out planes, shake windows, and rattle teeth, but passing people were drawn to his rhythm like moths to a flame. Born on the wrong side of the southern Caribbean Isle of Montserrat and abandoned at a young age near the freaks tent of a Rio de Janeiro carnival, Syd Wikid spent the first 17 years of his life learning to hustle money from unsuspecting targets. On the mean streets of the LA, Syd made his way swindling high school kids out of their lunch money and old people out of their bingo winnings. While scouting players for evening targets, his ear caught the sound of bongos; he turned and followed the noise. Born in the back seat of a Yugo on the sleazy side of Hollywood, Eddie Van Damon spent his formative years begging for change on the strip. He landed a job at the Whiskey cleaning the men's room; while working he came into his love for music and guitar. He ended up broke and drooling in an alley after trying to clean the ladies restroom, having been tossed out and losing his job. The sound of bongos awoke him from his stupor, and he staggered to meet his destiny. An unexpected addition to a family of mushroom farmers, Dr Thunder left his home to make his way in the streets of LA, there to educate the masses on the heart shaking resonance of a base guitar. After destroying a local convenience store with its roaring vibrations, he tripped over some drooling stooge in an alley while escaping the authorities. Intrigued by the low-brow Neanderthal, he followed him out of the alley, buoyed by the prospect of pounding drums in the distance. Born premature to a wealthy family, Beccalicious spent the first months of her life in ICU waiting for her tiny lungs to develop; not long after she would crack the glass with her blood curling screams. She grew up singing during any and every activity, ostensibly to annoy the authorities, but with a subconscious desire to develop her voice. Caught sneaking out of the elite Beverly Hills Academy for Gifted Children to see shows at the Whiskey, she ended up on the streets of LA, expelled and alone. Beccalicious was saved from a gang of thugs by a group of angry, smelly, broke musicians, but it was after the fray that they all looked at each and realized they belonged together. Syd said “that was wicked!”; Tommy said “she’s so fine it’s a sin!”. They all grinned in anticipation; Wikid Sin was born. Ok all of you fair weather riders, it’s almost that time of the year. So, to help you out with getting your horse ready for the road after it’s been sitting up all winter. If you follow some basic prep guide lines then you will increase your safety out on the road and the safety of the rest of us who ride year round. If you used stabilizer as outlined in your rides storage tips, your fuel should be in good shape as long as it's been less than a year. Regardless, double check it by looking inside the tank for gunk or other things that look nasty. If the fuel is consistent and clean, we can move on to the next step. If not, you are better off draining the tank, fuel lines, and carburetor (if applicable) before cranking over the engine. If you didn't spray fogging oil or lubricate on top of the cylinder (s) before storage, you may want to remove the spark plugs and pour two tablespoons of oil into the spark plug ports; this will lubricate the top portion of the cylinder walls before you start up the beast. Next, and pay attention here. If you didn’t changed your engine oil before storage, you'll still want to check the oil level before starting or riding her. If you didn't do an oil change before storage, now is a good time to get that oil and filter change them, especially since oil degrades when it sits over time. If you don’t know how to change your own oil, take it to a Harley shop or your mechanic and have them show you. Now, check your clutch, brake, and coolant levels (if applicable.) Remember that if brake fluid needs topping off, you'll need to use a new, sealed supply that is the ‘same’ brand as the fluid that is already in the system. If you start mixing brands you will increase the chances that your brakes will fail at that one time you really don’t want them to. This is one of those many things that you should have remembered or wrote down in that little book in your back pack. IF you were smart enough to kept the weight off of your motorcycle's wheels and suspension as outlined in our storage tips, bravo you’re a genius. You now have a good chance that your tires and suspension are in good shape, but you should still thoroughly inspect them before riding. If your motorcycle rested on a kickstand, check to make sure there are no unusual stress marks, cracks, or flat spots on the tires and check the air pressure. While checking all of that, you can also check your chain or drive shaft to make ensure that they are in operational shape and condition. If you have ANY doubts, go buy a new one and have them installed by your mechanic or dealership. Moving along, every time that you ride check tires, controls, lights, oils & fluids, chassis, and stands. Don't just take off after a thorough inspection. Let the bike idle for a few minutes to get its fluids circulating and to allow it to warm up. Take this time to get reacquainted with the bike. Before you go riding off into the sunset, with the wind blasting through your hair. Don't forget that the most important thing on the motorcycle is you, the rider so put your helmet on. When all is said and done, a little preparation will make re-entry into riding a lot more fun; look out for yourself and your bike, those around you, cars, trucks, buses and so on and enjoy the ride! Kevin H. Ask ASE Certified Master Mechanic Rick:

Send your questions to info@cv-northwest-magazine.com

What does cold air intake do different? True cold air intake attempts to get air from outside the engine compartment . The reason for this is, cold air is more dense or richer in oxygen content, which then mixed with fuel creates better engine performance. Do batteries today really need to be changed at all? Absolutely, batteries are made of components, I will keep it very simple, one being lead which is submerged in acid. The acid eating on the lead causes derbies which accumulates in the bottom of the battery case eventually shorting the battery out. Also there are 6 cells in a 12 volt battery which have to be connected together, these connection over time can fail. Is water just as good as coolant during the summer time? Water is very good at keeping things cool but coolant has many properties that water does not, higher boiling temp, corrosion protection and lower freezing temp are a few. The truth be told coolant mixed with water plays a very important part in a good working cooling system. www.cvnorthwestmagazine.com

An Artist with a Vision…..

Cody Van Winkle is a name known and respected among the underground hip-hop music scene in Portland, Oregon. Over the last two years Cody or “Winkz” as his fans call him, has dedicated all his spare time to his craft, whether spending hours at his keyboard and computer composing music, coming up with intricate lyrics or performing in venues across Oregon and Washington.

Another signed hip-hop artists, have commented, “It was obvious he knew what he was doing. That man has swag. The place was on fire.”

Just eight short months after his last eye surgery Winkz started performing—getting his bearings down— working hard to get recognized and he eventually did. He lost complete vision in his right eye at the age of two but it wasn’t until two years ago—coinciding with the beginning of his music career—when the retina in his left eye started to detach. After several surgeries, he was left with very limited sight in his left eye. The doctor’s prognosis was not good news. His condition was permanent and he would never again regain his sight. The brokenness he felt was overwhelming—but instead of dwelling on it—Winkz turned his brokenness into passion, making music. Everyday he poured himself more and more into his beats and lyrics, listening to music patterns and trying to find any mistakes or create new sound to make his music better. When asked how he could push though something so hard to deal with, he paused for a second, looked down and smiled. “Sometimes bad things happen. You just need to move forward. “You hear the sound of distant thunder, and you think "wonderful, another Pacific NW rainy day". The second thunderclap makes you furrow your brow; this thunder sounds different, almost feels different. The third rumble and the hairs on the nape of your neck begin to rise; it is then you realize, that isn't thunder. Fear grips you when you hear the roar yet again, a guttural sound, angry and menacing, bent on destruction. What was now distant is edging closer to you, like the predator that stalks you, relishing in your apprehension, tasting your fear, lips curled back in a snarl. Your subconscious mind starts to scream deep within the recesses of your soul, a cry of anguish at your impending doom, as in the distance you see the headlights come over the horizon. The car moves slowly, deliberately, knowing with every fiber of its steel body, every beat of its 350 cu inch heart, that you are the prey. With no sense of urgency it moves to you, savoring the chase, the ease of its movement casual but at the same time inevitable. You back away in fear, your body shaking, then bump into a wall; it takes a few seconds for your mind to register the fact that there is no place to run.

rims reflect the streetlights, turning into infinity as a circle with no end, giving you final notice of your place in the circle of life, and your ultimate destiny. The car stops, almost as if to pause and sniff the air for her prey, one last moment of delight and reverence, then the suicide doors open. Your world closes in, your fear begins to consume you from the inside, and yet you cannot close your eyes. A figure steps out. You see him, black skin glistening with hellfire, hooves coated with the blood of fallen enemies, matching horns from his forehead smoking in the night, glaring eyes burning into your soul. He speaks to you, sounding almost human... "Hey bro, how do you like my ride?"

Ratty Caddy and his friends enjoy tormenting people with their crazy and gothic vehicles around the city; the Twisted CC, Coffin Cruisers, and Pharoah's Street Rodder clubs enjoy breaking the necks of people who do a double take when they drive by. At what age did you start playing music? I was 6-years old - my father was a famous Country western guitarist. When and where did you first start playing music prior to being signed? In the Portland area to Berlin Germany. What band did you first play with after being signed and what was the first show? Garden of Eden and our first show was at the Los Angela’s music awards. How would you best describe your music style? That’s easy, 80’s Metal, Not Punk, Glam, Straight ahead metal, Energy Metal. Such as Krokus, Nazereth, Cinderella, AC/DC, Accept and Garden of Eden. Out of all of your songs, what two do you think are the closest to your heart and that express the most in your personal life? Shine-on, a ballad that actually won the Oregon song writing contest and Stormy Winter soon to be released in may 2012, About a 105-mile an hour wind storm I was in and witnessed and survived. Who are some of the musical artists that have influenced your music and playing through the years? Musicians like Randy Rhoads, George Lynch, Glenn Tipton, Van Halen, Adrian Vanenburg, Vinnian Campbell and Jake E Lee. What are some of the most memorable places you’ve performed at, and why? I would say Germany and European tour. They have a beautiful scenery and great crowds. If you could play onstage with one artist past or present, alive or dead – who would that per son or persons be? DIO I opened for him before and he is my vocal hero.

My passion for cars started at the very early age of 5, when I used to hang out with my Grandfather in his shop. He got me addicted to cars, fast cars. Growing up around the auto industry was my passion. Even through high school in 1976 I had fast cars. My 1st Mustang was a 1966 Convertible with 289 Ci V-8 Auto. Since then my love of the Mustang has grown through my Boys. Both my sons have the Mustang Itch and now own fast cars. I now own and have a deep rooted passion for Saleen Mustangs. My 1997 S281 Speedster Convertible is all Original Saleen with only 29K Mi. My 1996 Saleen SC281 Coupe is the pride of my toys. This car is Highly Modified and is a Wild ride when you put your foot into it.

DRUMMING: The Kinks and the Quirks … Being a drummer is pure bliss. It’s not unlike the excitement you feel when your popcorn takes off in the microwave. If you’ve ever crept behind a drum kit, you know what I mean. There’s a certain exhilaration that comes from drumming. Perhaps you gotta’ be a certain type of person to play drums? It was when I was in grade school that my teacher made me aware of the incessant tapping sounds I made with my feet. In high school, I remember the pure joy felt from bouncing a pencil off of desk surfaces. I still feel that joy as I perform a roll on the snare or hit it with a double tap. In my teens, drum lessons couldn’t come soon enough. When I was fifteen, they were delivered by the older brother of a girl at my high school. Bob Bulgrien was the drummer of a local punk band, AMQA, (Apple Maggot Quarantine Area) and a perfect teacher. Squished up in his attic room, I played his drums and he watched and smiled … a lot. For nearly two months, I drove to his house afterschool; never paying him a dime. Occasionally, he gave me instructions, “Lose your arms and legs … make each one work independently … keep playing.” But one day, midway through a lesson, Bob walked away, leaving me to play alone in his attic. Eventually, I went looking for him. I found him in his kitchen eating a sandwich. He looked up at me, sandwich in hand, and smiled approvingly. I knew right then that I’d mastered what he had to teach. Some people insist on specific kits made with special hardware and wood shells. It’s said that harder woods sound better with Maple producing a warmer sound; highlighting tonal lows, and Birch producing a brighter punchier sound that reduces the mids. I say don’t worry too much. The right drum kit for each drummer will come as the drummer evolves in knowledge, style and ability. In my current band, KLONDIKE KATE! I changed drum three times before I finally settled on a gold flecked PEARL Vision SST Birch ply shell kit. My practice set was cheap (it was hard to tune), my second set was too nice (it got scuffed up in transport), but my third set was just right. Cymbal choice and set-up evolves in the same way. Try out different cymbals and set them up in different places around your drums. Eventually the right set up will become clear. In my punk band, high end cymbals sounded too controlled - too clean. I like to pound away at the splashes adding accents and rhythms, making a crescendo of sound. So I use Zildjian ZHTs and Sabian B8s. Learning to drum is about training your mind. When practicing, some drummers wear a headset and play along with songs. This can improve rhythm, timing and changes. But most essentially, drummers gotta’ play with other instrumentalists. Most guitarists have favorite riffs they play when jamming. Learn to hear their patterns and predict their changes. Fills and accents will come later. As Bob, my teenage drum teacher, emphasized during my lessons, “The most important thing a drummer can do is keep a steady beat.” After leaving him, Bob gave me a drum set. It was a small five piece comprised of tattered drum heads and mismatched shells, but it was my first set; forever loved and remembered. About the Writer: Debbi Needham is the drummer and vocalist for the band, KLONDIKE KATE! www.skyclyde.com/ KlondikeKate.html.
