The Belgrade Theatre’s B2 auditorium is going from strength to strength with its productions, the latest addition being a true story of triumph over adversity with the production of ‘We Love You City’ from 25 Sept – 16 Oct, which focuses on Coventry City’s legendary FA Cup Final win in 1987 in what BBC commentator John Motson described as “the finest Cup Final I’ve had the pleasure of commentating on.” Spurs were going for a record eighth victory and had never lost a final, while unfancied Coventry were appearing in their first ever final after 104 years of trying. Before you flash the flesh, it is essential that your skin is in tip top condition, you can achieve this by taking simple steps such as drinking plenty of water, maintaining a regular sleep pattern, exfoliating once or twice a week and moisturising regularly. The skin on our faces has a different need to that of our bodies so make sure you use scrubs and creams that are specifically designed for the delicate face and neck area. The Body Shop do a great Shea Butter Body Scrub which is packed full of skin loving nutrients and smells gorgeous too.

HOW TO LOOK GOOD NAKED | FEATURES De fuzzing is also a regular feature in the pre holiday routine, here you have a number of choices, go to a professional salon, such as Renaissance for a wax, Kirans in West Orchards for threading session or even invest in a course of laser hair removal treatments from Blushers in City Arcade. Alternatively you could go for a bit of DIY with either; hair removal creams, wax strips, epilation or shaving. In summer your hair and nails tend to grow faster so essential maintenance is a must. For your nails you can choose to give yourself a manicure and pedicure, with bodycare stocking a fantastic crystal nail file and Boots in Lower Precinct have a whole section dedicated to nailcare and treatments or alternatively visit Enigma on Spon Street and either go for a standard manicure or opt for acrylic tips. Obviously with the hair side of things it’s always best to go to the professionals to banish any split ends! Toni and Guy on Market Way are experts in the industry and will be able to give advice on what your hair needs to stay silky all summer long. A dazzling white smile is a great way to boost your appearance and confidence, Spa Dental on Corporation Street offer a professional and friendly service which delivers fantastic results. Wilkinsons in Cathedral Lanes have a huge range from Beverley hills whitening to pearl drops and even cater for sensitive teeth too. If you’re after instant results visit spa dental for a whitening treatment alternatively try Clinique’s lipstick collection for a brighter smile. Arguably one of worst moments of your holiday for those with a fair complexion is that first day sunbathing, everyone else seems bronzed to perfection whilst you remain a bit pasty to say the least. Don’t worry, it’s nothing a spot of fake tan won’t sort out, head down to Superdrug on Hertford Street for a range of brands and applications styles from mists to foams to ensure a streak free finish.

LOOK HOT THIS SUMMER IN ONE OF THE MOST STYLISH, SMOOTH AND SENSATIONAL DRIVING EXPERIENCES ON THE ROAD…

LEXUS IS 250C SEi

20 Feel Alive Summer 2010

LEXUS IS 250C SEi | FEATURES

From coupé to convertible in around 20 seconds, the IS 250C SEi combines style with substance, providing a sophisticated and pleasurable driving experience for the distinguished and smart individual. With a simple, tight and angulated shell, it effortlessly drifts and turns from every slight motion, reaching 60mph in just under 9 seconds. The V6 engine purrs into life at the press of the electronic starter button, with firm pressure on the middle brake pad, the 250C lights up like an alien spacecraft, with steering column extending out for ease and comfort. Once the operating procedure is complete, dials and dash set and raring to go, the six speed automatic gearbox comes into life. Offering parked, reverse, neutral and drive and sport options, you can slide the comfortable lever into position and ease the throttle with the simplest of motions. In top gear and cruising at optimum speed, the 250C is a beautiful thing. It steers and corners with a fluid, tracked and steady flow that makes you feel as if you’re flying through the air. Every bump and nudge is cushioned by the double wishbone, multilink suspension, and the leather interior completes the all round softness. Smooth, sultry and sensationally poised, the 250C combines all the latest technology with state of the art handling and control to make your drive, the ultimate experience on the road. Heated seats, electronic windows, ABS, BAS, EPS, Traction Control, USB ports, a Vehicle Dynamics Integrated system, 18’ alloys, multi-purpose airbags, electrically adjustable mirrors, a three part retractable

hard top, parking assistant sensors and a fully integrated unit on the dashboard including satellite navigation, mobile phone link-up, audio tuning, 6 CD player, climate control and locking features, the 250C is like a James Bond car of the future. Even with an extremely handy parking and reversing aid on the main console terminal the 250C has limited view through its tiny back screen, and instead, the driver has to become accustomed to the adjusting and levelling of the interior seats and mirrors in order to see fully. With so much onboard navigation, sensory equipment and alarms, the 250C still manages to be a car that is extremely safe and easy to drive. Boot space was disappointingly shallow, although with the folding roof and the mechanisms this wasn’t hard to see why. However what it loses in depth it gains in length, still offering plenty of space for that all important shopping. One other point of negativity is the slow pull off in drive control, from idle stop; it tends to drag slightly from low gear, although if controlled manually with the sports speed box, it improves dramatically. The most comfortable and natural position in drive mode however does require some heavy acceleration. Once the car reaches 3rd gear automatically it zooms like a bullet from a gun, infiltrating the sensory organs of its co-host with a dazzling and vengeful nature.

Brakes were extremely responsive, shift downs were accurately maintained and controlled and the onboard driver aids were exceptional. Apart from an endlessly dirty touch screen, the main console added a futuristic, modern approach to an otherwise standard looking motor.

Coventry is home to one of the largest city centre based universities in the UK and is an evolving and innovative University with a growing reputation for excellence in education.

COVENTRY UNIVERSITY | FEATURES

C – I’m from Nuneaton and I still live there. I drive in every day which is great as it’s only 15 minutes away. I’m studying Human Resource Management and have really enjoyed it over the 3 years. It’s a challenging degree but very rewarding. N – I’m from Boston in Lincolnshire but would now class Coventry as my adopted home. It’s about two and a half hours by car which is the perfect distance. My parents can’t visit every weekend but I can still get home for some decent food when I need to! I study Computers, Networking & Communications Technology. C – I chose CU as it was just right for me. The degree course was exactly what I wanted and I save money by staying at home. I had a very tough decision but once I weighed up the pro’s and con’s I knew CU was where I wanted to be but living 15 minutes away I opted to carry on living at home. N – I looked at studying in Birmingham but everything was so spread out and complicated. I love how close everything is at CU and being a city centre university makes it even more appealing. Plus the degree I’m doing is very broad compared to other Uni’s. It opens up so many possibilities. C –Living at home means I don’t get to go out in Coventry as much as I’d like but when I do Varsity and Dogma are my favourite places to go at night, especially on a Wednesday in Varsity as all the sports societies meet there after their games. The atmosphere is electric!

N – The Students’ Union on a Friday gets really busy and it’s great for a drink and a game of pool. To be honest there is something going on every night if you can afford it. The Phoenix does great food during the day and promotes cheap drinks at night and being so local it’s the ideal student hang out. Also the shops are only a stone throw away from the campus. I’m into my computer games so it’s handy having Game and Game Station on my doorstep.

N – Once I graduate I will definitely look for job opportunities in Coventry. When I say to my mum that I’m going home I mean Coventry and not Boston, it’s weird! Fortunately I have two job links in Coventry and who knows how long I will stay here for. I’m hoping as long as possible. C – I can’t believe it’s all over! It has gone so fast and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I just wish I could do it all over again!

C – The Primark is amazing. It has everything I need and it’s great for a student’s budget. When I eat in between lectures I go to ‘The Terrace’ food court in West Orchards. It has everything from McDonalds to Subway to Simply Spuds. N – I use the CU gym a lot as it is so easy to get to, the equipment is immense and it’s very reasonable for the students. With the lifestyle a student can live away from home I think it’s important to stay in some sort of shape. C – I wish I’d done more sport at CU. The facilities are really modern and the sport societies are very friendly. To be honest that tends to be the vibe you get from everyone studying here. It has a very homely feel which is just what you need when you move away for the first time. And being a Student Ambassador for the Uni has really made me feel part of what is going on around me. I can speak to people who are just starting in their first year and make them feel as comfortable as I did when I first started.

Come and see Coventry University for yourself. The next Open Days for prospective students are on Saturday 9th and Saturday 23rd October. Visit www.coventry.ac.uk for more details.

YOU’RE THE BOSS | FEATURES

Ever found yourself daydreaming whilst stuck in a dead end job with no chance of promotion? Chances are you’re not alone, a staggering 63% of people want to be their own boss!* In our brand new feature Mick McLaughlin met local entrepreneur, Beryl Atkins and found out how she made the break, achieved her dream and became the boss.

Improving confidence and changing people’s lives forever was certainly on the menu when Coventry business woman Beryl Atkins launched her own cosmetic surgery venture “Transpire Surgery”. The entrepreneur, wife and mother of one was so determined to fulfill her dream of running her own business she ploughed her life savings into it and became the driving force and Director of a very successful organisation in an increasingly popular and competitive market. Spurred on from a bad experience relating to her own cosmetic procedures Beryl knew she was equipped with the skills, experience and knowledge of the pitfalls in surgery and vowed to start her own business to ensure that her clients never experienced the same problems that she had. Beryl explains: I couldn’t believe that after putting my trust in a leading surgery company and spending so much money I would have received complications. I received no aftercare and had to keep calling the clinic to try and get a check-up. It was three months after the surgery that they finally got around to seeing me and the company’s own nurse was so disgusted with how I’d been treated that she advised me to try and get my money back.” Beryl did contact the company for a refund but received nothing. However, after putting her thoughts about her experience into writing another surgeon commented that she would make a fantastic consultant as she had experienced being rushed into surgery without a full understanding of the procedures she was having at that time and could empathise with patients to make sure they had full knowledge before moving forward. In addition and more importantly she knew that it was advisable to check up on the surgeon before undergoing any cosmetic procedures, something that she wasn’t advised to do prior to her own surgery.

Beryl continues:

Beryl explains:

“I was working as a Community Auxillary Assistant at the time so I already had a good grounding in patient care. Also being a caring person by nature and nursing my mum through illness until she died, I knew that I had always wanted to help people. In addition after what I went through with my experience of cosmetic surgery, including the lack of aftercare I received, I wanted to make sure that patients were looked after properly and were aware of and understood the pros and cons of surgery.”

“Having been a consultant for many years, I wanted to branch out on my own and focus considerably on patient care. Utilising my skills I enlisted the services of leading plastic surgeon Mr Shaikh, to open my own business “Transpire Surgery”. We pride ourselves on a first class service from consultation to postoperative and ensure that everyone who steps through our doors leaves feeling positive about themselves and ready to face the world.”

A change of career was just what Beryl needed and becoming a patient consultant proved highly successful, with her working within Private Clinics and running up to seven practices at one time. Liaising with a variety of surgeons she built up a successful rapport with clients and a professional, caring and trusting reputation. Slowly her confidence was restored but the nagging complexities of her unsuccessful surgery played on her mind and she vowed to get it fixed. But her plans were suddenly cut short in November 2008 when her older brother died suddenly from a massive cardiac arrest. Plunging into despair it was her colleague and friend Mr Dawood Shaikh, a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, who in her opinion is “one of the best in the business” having performed surgery for cancer patients, burns units, reconstructive and cosmetic work, came to her rescue. Referring to him as her friend and saviour, Beryl poured out her troubles and her insecurities regarding her surgery that she had six years prior and Mr Shaikh promised to fix her and make her happy again. In a remarkable twist, the two who had worked together for numerous years, admired each other’s work so much they decided to carry on in business together and Beryl opened up Transpire Surgery. Transpire is an Independent healthcare provider for cosmetic surgery and fully registered with the Quality Care Commission. Joining forces with Mr Shaikh, a consultant plastic surgeon and having a reputation of being one of the best in the business. Has been key to the success of the business but it’s not just his skills that will take “Transpire Surgery” to the next level, Beryl’s consultancy skills has ensured she is equipped with the attributes for the role.

Beryl, received further training and advice from the Women’s Business Development Agency, an organization offering business support, training and advice for women which she says have been invaluable in helping her set up her own business. She added: “Setting up and running your own business can be a very daunting experience and the help and assistance that I received through the Women’s Business Development agency has been invaluable in getting my business off the ground. In addition juggling a career and being a mum to George (9) is challenging but I believe if you have the drive and determination to succeed you can make it happen! My advice to any aspiring entrepreneur is… Go for it! You have to build on your skills and experience and if you want something badly you have to at least try and achieve it. I’m also lucky that I have very supportive people who back me 100 per cent and I’m certain that “Transpire Surgery” will continue to go from strength to strength.”

This summer Twilight mania hits fever pitch with the release of the latest saga Eclipse. Edward and Bella’s journey together mesmerised the millions of avid Twilight fans. Every girl would melt at the sight of Edward and every boy would pretend they’re not jealous! The fantasy love story has made every enthusiast find the gothic lifestyle lead by the Cullen family intriguing. Who would have thought vampires would provide the next fashion inspiration, the next box office hit and the next poster on every teenager’s wall? So for this issue we use Coventry’s historic past to create a Twilight inspired adventure around Coventry city centre venues. Think Gothic architecture, haunted buildings, and eerily inspired fun ... We start off the day with some late lunch in the medieval surroundings of Godiva’s, St Mary’s Guildhall. The Guildhall on Bayley Lane is one of the finest surviving medieval guildhalls in England which has stood for over 650 years and is rumoured to have very high levels of paranormal activity. It served as King Henry VI’s court during the War of the Roses, as a temporary prison to Mary Queen of Scots and William Shakespeare is thought to have staged his plays here. Located in the magnificent, vaulted undercroft of St. Mary’s Guildhall, Godiva’s offers a wonderful, historic setting for afternoon tea before moving on to discover some of the city’s other hidden treasures. With the low ceilings, the low light and the gothic mirrors The Golden Cross and Coventry Mint on Hay Lane are just the place to enjoy a few Bloody Mary’s, surely the drink of choice for a Vampire! The Cross, as it is more

32 Feel Alive Summer 2010

St Mary’s Guildhall commonly known, is one of the oldest pubs in Coventry, West Midlands, and one of the longest alcohol-serving venues in England. Located on Gosford Street, Whitefriars Olde Ale House dates back to 1335. The traditional surroundings provide a great backdrop for our gothic theme and the wide selection of ales, bitters, continental lagers and wine cater for the whole group. The old building used to be a butchers shop before turning into an alehouse and there have been reports of some seriously spooky goings on! It’s off to Spon Street next and as one of Coventry’s eldest streets, we’re bound to find a suitable pub for our adventure. The Old Windmill Inn or Ma Browns as it is affectionately known amongst the locals, provided just the place! Supposedly deceased landlords still prop up the bar but with a lively and friendly atmosphere not to mention the terrific real ales on offer, it’s no wonder they stick around.

The Golden Cross Finally we headed off to Coventry’s famous third spire, Christchurch Spire. At the foot of this historical landmark is one of the most unusual and quirky pubs in the city, Inspire Bar Cafe in the Bull Yard. Inspire is famed for its extensive continental beer selection with local favourites Erdinger and Duvel alongside a huge variety of flavoured and even organic tipples. The spectacular array of lager would make any enthusiast weak at the knees and combined with the well heated beer garden and eclectic background music Inspire is the perfect place to while away the evening. If a night out away from the norm sounds appealing, then Coventry is definitely the place to visit. The history and mystery that surrounds the city and these public houses creates a fantasy atmosphere almost straight off the big screen!

Be !nventive

CITY OF INVENTION | FEATURES of the first installation began in midApril and is continuing throughout May, building to the public launch on 23 June. Explaining his creation, Oliver Scott, director of Mercurial Dance and producer of the Bubble Chamber explains: “The journey to the reality of the Bubble Chamber has been a long one; I started developing the idea in 2006, straight after completing another major participatory dance project, 100 Faces.

Something new and unexpected is being created in a previously empty space in Coventry’s City Arcade. Produced by Coventry’s own Mercurial Dance, The Bubble Chamber is a fun, unique and exciting digital-dance event that is being created by the city’s young people for themselves, their families and the general public. Using dance, live images and video, pupils from Coventry’s Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School and Language College are turning an empty room into a space with eyes and ears and which responds and changes as viewers move through it. A perfect example of Coventry’s inventiveness, the Bubble Chamber is the first event of its sort in the country. It is truly pioneering young people’s use of Isadora, a graphic programming environment developed for professional dancers, and so is enabling them to develop and interact with their own digital dance experience and ultimately create their own, unique digital-dance ‘installation’. The Bubble Chamber has been commissioned through the People Dancing programme. Part of the West Midlands Culture Programme for London 2012, People Dancing is a three year programme funded by Legacy Trust UK, Arts Council England and Advantage West Midlands and uses the inspiration of the London 2012 Games to get as many people as possible dancing in the West Midlands. The Bubble Chamber has also been supported by Arts Council England WM, The Higgs Charity, Warwick Arts Centre and Coventry City Council. Development

“My personal passion is dance and new technologies; for a number of years I have put aside a few weeks during which I have developed new ideas in this area and created new platforms as a solo artist. I also very much enjoy working with younger people to engage them with dance, relishing their enthusiasm for anything new and their determination to push out and away the boundaries. “In essence the Bubble Chamber is the coming together of these elements.” The Bubble Chamber launch will showcase the work of the young people and visitors to the ‘installation’ will find themselves interacting with the ‘performance’ since their movement will trigger a unique response from software used in the display. Before they realise it visitors will be moving to explore the responses they get, effectively choreographing their own dance. Oliver’s vision is for a project that will develop over time, engaging more and more young people on new ‘installations’, with each building on the previous one and ultimately culminating in a major event to celebrate all that will be achieved throughout the project. The Bubble Chamber is just the beginning and there is a long way to go before the final celebration but, after a long gestation period Oliver’s imagination is becoming a reality. “Having come up with the concept of the Bubble Chamber it has taken about two years to secure the funding, find the right location and bring in the right people, “I’m excited about basing the project in City Arcade, which is a great place to be for artists right now; the City Council has been really inventive in the way it has occupied the empty spaces and the area has effectively become a ‘creative quarter’. All of us working and performing there are sourcing inspiration and motivation from those around us.”

Getting the funding for the project was not easy but Oliver has now secured the backing of the People Dancing programme, Arts Council England WM, The Higgs Charity and Warwick Arts Centre. “Without their support, this project would not be possible, so I am incredibly grateful to them for their vision.” Oliver is also now collaborating on the project with Ashleigh Brown, a Coventry DJ and expert in the use of interactive technology. Together they have explored the work of others, beginning with a visit to the Decode exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. “I have spent many years exploring the integration of dance, technology and interactivity but as the project got closer to reality I began to hone my ideas. I have viewed and considered the work of many artists who incorporate technology within their dance performances, our purpose was to understand and debate the work of others so we could evolve our own perspective and make the Bubble Chamber stand apart.” “In my view, the real edge of this piece of work is the engagement of young people, their exploration of the software and the potential it gives them and finally the public platform they are being given for their creative voice. It is incredibly rare for them to aspire to produce a piece of work that is sufficient to engage with a wide ranging audience.” Giving a wonderful platform to young people to find their own voice and explore their own creativity, the Bubble Chamber is inventive and inspirational and will bring vibrant life to an otherwise empty area of Coventry City Centre. GODIVA CARNIVAL take Care of the World 2010

SATURDAY 3 JULY

Designed by Jane Hytch of Imagineer Productions, this year the Godiva Carnival Procession celebrates some of the most colourful, exotic and extraordinary creatures from the natural world made more extreme and beautiful through carnival costume. Titled ‘Take Care of the World’ the Godiva Carnival Procession will feature an army of Penguins, Zebras, Chameleons, Meerkats, Foxes and Otters amongst many other large scale spectacular costumes – a Lionfish, an Arctic Owl, a Polar Bear, an African Lion and a Flamingo. The beautiful masquerade costumes include wild flowers, arctic dancers, and rain forest dancers. The procession starts with a quote from London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Chairman Sebastian Coe; “Sustainability has to be at the heart of everything we do” and the design of the floats tells a darker story of how man has had a negative impact through deforestation, non eco tourism, greed and the threat to biodiversity. It finally ends with an image of a lone white tiger – the last ever to be seen in the wild was shot in 1958 – A symbolic reminder that we need to ‘Take care of the World’. Live music in the procession will be provided by Coventry’s Dave Barrett & Drumestra, Dhol drummers – Masterclass, Phase One Steel Band, Triumph RBL Pipe 36 Feel Alive Summer 2010

Band, and guest band – Bloco Fogo from the South East playing Brazilian, Cuban and African Rhythms. Various sound systems will keep the dancers jumping to all the latest Soca road marches from Trinidad. Carnival masquerade camps are currently being set up across the city – in Willenhall, Radford, Wood End, Walsgrave, Charterhouse, Bell Green, Canley and Hillfields. Here participants will work alongside professional artists to make their costumes and create their performance ready for the procession on Saturday 3 July. On 3 July the ‘Carnival Warm Up’ Live will be provided by the BBC and Imagineer Productions from 11.30am onwards in Broadgate getting everyone into the Carnival spirit with carnival themed entertainment! As Coventry builds towards the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the carnival will include an Olympic themed section featuring 200 young people from across the West Midlands carrying the flags of the 206 nations taking part in London 2012. This year’s carnival will also include the work of internationally acclaimed and award winning Carnival designer Brian McFarlane from Trinidad. Brian McFarlane is working in partnership with Imagineer Productions on Godiva Awakes

and will return to Coventry in 2011 to design part of the 2011 Godiva Carnival. Godiva Awakes is one of the major projects for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, commissioned through Artists Taking the Lead and managed by Arts Council England. Imagineer Productions will create a ten metre high Lady Godiva, who in July 2012 will awake to a spectacular performance developed over three years where Godiva, powered by 50 cyclists, joins 2000 dancers, actors, aerialists, musicians, pyrotechnicians and carnivalists in a processional performance with young performers at its heart, marking the unveiling of the new Lady Godiva. Godiva will walk to London to play a part in the London 2012 Celebrations in Victoria Park. With Godiva Festival looming and the promise of an electrifying Friday night line up courtesy of Heart 100.7 for ‘Back to The 80’s’, we caught up with musical legends, Garry Christian and Hazel O’Connor just before their Godiva debuts!

Garry, as the original founding member of The Christians when was your ‘big break’ and were you involved in the local music scene before this? Yea I’ve been into music since I was 12 years old, my brother gave me a bass guitar and he played the sax and we started playing together. I found it so frustrating that I couldn’t sing and play guitar at the same time, you see these bands where the lead singer’s strumming and singing and I’m like how do you do that?! So I put down my guitar and focused on my vocals... The band formed in ’85 and we produced a demo at the Benson street studios in Liverpool. We sent that out to loads of labels and kept getting the same response, thanks but no thanks. Luckily for us Island Records could see the potential in our tracks and signed us up, I remember thinking after we’d signed to them, this is great – Island have got so many big artists like Cat Stevens and Bob Marley on their books I’ll be able to get all their back catalogues for free! Who are / were your musical influences? As a boy growing up it was my older siblings, I was into all the merseybeat around at the time thanks to my brothers, my mum was into her soul with the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and my dad, well he only really liked cricket and wasn’t really into music! Do you think the music industry has changed much since the 80s? Oh! Beyond all recognition! I really feel for the young bands out there now back in the day it was always about the music, now it seems to have shifted the focus onto image and marketing and I think Mr Simon Cowell may be responsible for a lot of this, pop music seems to consist of a bunch of manufactured pretty people singing someone elses songs... and don’t even get me started on the downloading side of things, it’s something I don’t really understand and feel like we are turning into a digital generation.

HEART!

What was the first record you bought? And the last? My first record was Ray Charles, In the Heat of the Night. I remember hearing it on the soundtrack of the film with the same name and I was completely blown away by it, since then I have always been a fan of Ray’s music. The last album I bought was Valleys of Neptune by Jimi Hendrix, it has some previously unreleased tracks on there and it has a vintage kind of feel. If you could collaborate with any artist – past or present who would it be and what would you sing? Ok, so many to choose from, I’d go with John Lennon, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, I’d like to go to heaven and start a super group with those guys who are all fantastic artists in their own rights. I also think a collaboration with Ben Harper would be good, if you haven’t heard of him look him up, he’s an amazing singer songwriter and guitarist, I discovered his music, when I was living in Paris and he just captured the audience! Paul McCartney would also be on my list, we did a charity single of Ferry Across the Mersey a while ago and he was brilliant to work with, just very down to earth and un star like! Do you think the festival scene has a different atmosphere to a typical gig? Definitely, you get to meet and play alongside a huge variety of bands and the backstage area is usually mad, whereas on a gig it’s usually just you plus support. I also love the outdoor feel to a festival and it’s amazing when you get the crowd, who aren’t necessarily there to see you, sing along to your songs. What songs can we expect to hear on your set list? 80’s hits like: Forgotten Town, Greenbank Drive, Words, Ideal World and Hooverville

than his own version, that was pretty impressive and do you agree with him? Haha I don’t! But it was a massive compliment and a great endorsement from him, I don’t think Yusef is the kind of guy who would say something like that and not mean it. What celebrities would you most like to invite to a dinner party? John Lennon, George Harrison, Ray Charles, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Laurie Latham and Jools Holland, he’s quite a character! Sounds like a great boys night in, would you not invite any ladies to your party then? My girlfriend would kill me but yeah and it would have to be Bette Davis, I was and still am in love with her! I would also want to invite the poet Maya Angelou. If you were prime minister what would you do? I wholeheartedly agree with Nick Clegg on cutting tax for those on less than 10k a year, that would certainly be a boost for the poorest of the poor in this country. We need to focus on the young people and children and really push to give them all a better education. I’d stop wasting money on things like weapons of mass destruction and keep it simple and invest the money into real things that would make a real difference... The World cup is looming, do you fancy Englands chances? Any predictions on who will be lifting the cup after the final? Barring injuries I think we had a good chance of making it to the semi finals, we have a really strong team this year so I’m keeping optimistic, you’ve gotta have hope at the end of the day! I would love it for us to win the world cup this year, its long overdue! Looking at the other teams I think Brazil have a strong chance, so does Portugal and Italy are usually very lucky.

Do you think you’re sound has changed much since your first self titled album to the latest album Soul from Liverpool? I think so, It’s definitely a more organic, acoustic album with real instruments as opposed to that from back in the day where synthesizers were all the rage! Saying that though, our early albums were great and definitely of their time. Cat Stevens referred to your cover of his ‘Where do the Children Play’ as ‘better

So Hazel, as a Coventry kid, what is your earliest memory of the city? Being pushed in a trolley down Wyken Croft! What do you think has been the biggest change in the city? I think the Lower Precinct is fabulous, historic sites have been preserved. I love Spon Street and there’s a great positivity about the city at the moment it’s definitely on the up. The 1980s were quite a decade, what was your favourite moment and your worst? The release of “Eighth Day”, the whole two tone movement, being with mates on the road, those were all exciting times, I guess the worst part was being sued by my record company which was followed by a girl’s holiday to Morocco with the airline going bust and being left stranded! You have also worked extensively as an actress, which career path was easier to get into, acting or singing? I guess singing makes me happy, it’s like giving a gift back, with acting it’s about playing, it’s like having a holiday from yourself! I love both to be honest and it’s fantastic to be given an opportunity to do both. You’ve had a sensational career, what for you was the highlight so far? Everything is a highlight! Winning an acting award for my portrayal of Kate in Breaking Glass although I left the award behind in the hotel! Being invited to meet the Queen which would have pleased my mum but deciding I’d rather keep my integrity! I’ve been blessed with many great things and I’m really thankful for them.

A lot of people think of you as the founder of ‘girl power’ would you agree and are you a bit of a feminist at heart? I think women should be chosen for their talents and energy and not for their looks and stacked heels. Women like Pauline Black and Suzie Sioux are all positive role models. Your life sounds pretty hectic, what do you do to relax? I love DIY. When my mum got ill we decided we’d go on a road trip in France, be a bit nosey and look at people’s houses. We came across a half built house with its own piece of land and the rest is history. I did it up and it keeps me relaxed, actually I think I’m obsessive about it, I keep collecting tools and I’d love to host my own programme on DIY! Other than that I love karate and meditation at the Krishna temple. What do you think of the UK Festival scene? I think it’s great! I love the Godiva Festival, Larmer Tree Festival and Beautiful Days. I always wanted to do Glastonbury and rang them up myself and sorted it! Are you excited to play at Godiva and have you ever been before? It’s about time! I’ve wanted to play it for years! I’ve been before and I’m really looking forward to kicking it off on the Friday evening. Be there 6.30 on the dot for some classics and expect a real powerful and energetic vibe.

You’ve shared the stage with some pretty big names including U2, Duran Duran and Thin Lizzy, any backstage gossip or diva-ish demands? No not really – I’ve always found the bigger the star the more down to earth they are. I remember having some great laughs with Elton John, David Bowie was always fantastic too! Any celebrity crushes? Years ago I had a massive crush on Bob Geldof! I once wrote him a letter to blag a backstage pass to one of his gigs saying we need to make friends before we become too famous! There was no backstage pass waiting for me! Years later I became friendly with Paula Yates, his wife at the time and I used to visit them at their home each week. He told me he still has that letter!!

Thanks Garry and Hazel, it was a pleasure speaking to you both and we are all really looking forward to seeing you at Godiva on Friday the 2nd July... Tune into Heart 100.7 fm and on DAB for all the latest updates and announcements on Godiva – Back to the 80s! www.thechristianslive.co.uk www.hazeloconnor.com www.heart.co.uk

Do you think the music industry has changed much over the years? Yes, definitely more manufactured. Everyone wants to be famous, the whole celebrity thing is really plastic.

Looking back did you expect to have an award winning, multi faceted career which spanned over 3 decades? No… I thought I’d never get past 30!

FEATURES | BARBECUES

With July and August almost upon us it is officially Barbecue season! Here are our tips on how to hold the perfect garden party. In our humble opinion, you can’t beat a traditional charcoal barbie, Argos have a great range of grills including freestanding, portable and built in options starting from as little as £9.99 going up to a deluxe Antony Worral Thompson BBQ for a sizzling £299.99.

Wilkinsons do a fantastic range of garden furniture ranging from swings, gazebos, chairs and tables and if you feel like making your do a little more informal you can pick up a great range of blankets, throws and cushions from IKEA or why not really push the boat out and invest in an inflatable pool or even an aquaslide from The Entertainer? Cutlery wise you can either go for convenience and stock up on paper plates and plastic cups, we recommend Poundland on Market Way for a good bargain or nip over to BHS for some seriously stylish crockery, cutlery and glassware.

Remember when you were young and how exciting it was to be handed a party invite from your friends? Why not shun the modern day trend of texting or creating a facebook group and head down to WH Smiths for some kitsch party invites?

46 Feel Alive Summer 2010

Now for the good bit, the food! Coventry City Centre has an abundance of retailers to suit all tastes and budgets, from specialist butchers like Stuart Francis and Walter Smith to uber convenient supermarkets like Tesco Express and Sainsburys. Iceland is a must for low cost bumper BBQ packs, Marks and Spencer have a fantastic range of antipasti such as marinated artichoke hearts, olives, cheeses, cured meats, breadsticks and their freshly baked crusty French baguettes.

Anyone for Pimms?

A party wouldn’t be a party without chilled beverages! Tescos, Sainsburys, The Co-op, Iceland and Bodyfuel will undoubtedly have some great summer deals on drinks, including beers, spirits and softies. Pimms and cider on ice are popular choices so make sure the freezer is well stocked on the cube front!

Summer Soundtrack

Now 76 available from HMV is due out on the 19th July, the cult compilation album is sure to be packed full of all the hottest summer anthems of 2010, alternatively why not take a trip down memory lane and pick up a copy of ‘Jackie the Album Summer Special’ packed with sizzling tunes from the likes of Mungo Jerry, the Bay City Rollers and Typically Tropical!
