THE PROPOSAL | FEATURES
Will you...
Don’t panic!
Follow our tips and
your proposal will be fit for any Princess!
It’s one of life’s most stressful times for any man, the daunting proposal... What to choose? How much to spend? Do I ask her father’s permission first? Where do I propose? The list is endless…
18ct Gold 1/4 Carat Diamond Seven Stone Eternity Ring £499 H Samuel
Test the Waters – Before you propose, the two of you should talk about the possibility of getting married. Make sure it’s something that you both want and agree on major issues such as children. You don’t want her to be taken completely off guard, as such a proposal is almost certainly guaranteed to elicit only a hesitating yes, if not a, “I’ll have to think about it!”
We asked James Harrison, Director of Francis & Gaye Ltd, Cathedral Lanes for his top tips on the trends for engagement and wedding rings this season... “Single stone diamonds in platinum or white gold still remain the most popular engagement rings this season. For wedding rings we have found that with metal prices being so high there has been an increase in popularity for Palladium style rings, especially for the Grooms.”
Make it a Surprise – Even though you have discussed getting
Platinum Diamond Cluster Ring £5900 Francis and Gaye
married, the marriage proposal itself should still be a surprise. Find a moment and a way that she won’t be suspecting.
Be Prepared – Saying, “Will you marry me?” is quite a
daunting experience and one that leaves many proposers completely tongue-tied! So practice! It might feel silly, but say the words out loud a few times. You might also want to write down exactly what you’re going to say, to make sure you come off as smooth and confident.
9ct White Gold Cubic Zirconia Wave Ring £49.99 H Samuel
Talk to Her Parents – Although sometimes considered old fashioned there is still something nice and respectful about asking for the parents blessing.
Wedding bands 9ct, 14ct, 18ct, 22ct gold (in all colours) as well as Palladium and Platinum starting from £125 Francis and Gaye
Links Of London Sweetie Bracelet £110 Francis and Gaye
Find The Right Engagement Ring! – Wearing an engagement ring is a lifetime commitment, make sure it’s the right style. You might find an opportunity to window shop for rings when you are walking past a store, or bring it up in conversation. You can also ask her mother or best friend to help choose the ring.
9ct White Gold Diamond and Tanzanite Ring £229 H Samuel Ladies Longines Prima Luna Watch £650 Francis and Gaye
Be Creative – Incorporate her personality, her favourite things, what foods she likes into the proposal. Make it memorable.
Pick a Personal Spot – Think about your favourite romantic places – choose a meaningful spot to pop the question. A favourite park, a romantic meal, it doesn’t have to be expensive! Just don’t ask her in the middle of the supermarket! 18ct White Gold 1 Carat Forever Diamonds Ring £5999 H Samuel

Season’s Essentials
Diane, Beauty Therapist from Renaissance Hair & Beauty, Broadgate House, Coventry city centre gives her thoughts on Kate’s wedding day look. “Kate is a classic, elegant beauty who is making her mark on becoming a real style and fashion icon. She has a real English rose look which many women relate to so her wedding day make-up should reflect that. She should choose a look that highlights her best features, her beautiful hazel eyes and her lovely complexion. I’d recommend a classic warm toned look, emphasizing her eyes and a creamy, smooth glow to her skin. To complement the focus on the eyes, her lips should be neutral and creamy.

“This season, red lipstick is once again making a huge come back. Marilyn Monroe, Gwen Stefani and Dita Von Teese have all been fans of this trend which is once again bang on for 2011. Red lippy, when worn with understated eye make up and neutral tones plump and add shape to the thinnest of lips. It certainly looks as though this trend is here to stay!”

I predict that she’ll wear something simple and elegant and her hair will take a classic look to reflect this. Perhaps a chignon or a ballerina bun, worn away from her face and low in the nape, this timeless classic will ensure she looks groomed throughout her big day. She may team this with an elegant tiara or alternatively she could go for a soft-tonged look which is becoming increasingly popular with modern brides.”

ith an abundance of royal connections and revelations, Coventry’s history is coloured with royal buildings, regal visits and princely traditions. In this “Royal” edition we take the opportunity to delve deep into our proud city’s history and uncover Coventry’s regal links...
Cheylesmore Manor Probably built by 1250, granted to Queen Isabella which in 1358 passed to Edward Prince of Wales (Black Prince). Saint John the Baptist Church 1344, Queen Isabella (wife of Edward II) granted a parcel of land for the building of a chapel. Edward the Black Prince and Prince of Wales gifted further land to the north of the site on which further building work took place. Charterhouse For Carthusian Monks. Richard II claimed to be the founder of the Priory and he laid the foundation stone of the church attached to it in 1385. St Mary’s Guildhall Built in 1342, many Kings and Queens of England have visited this wonderful place. The tapestry on the main wall dating back to the 1490’s,
36 Feel Alive Spring 2011
depicts King Henry VI and his wife Queen Margaret, who not only visited Coventry many times during his reign, but he held Royal Court and a Parliament in the city. For a short while Coventry was seen under his reign as the capital of England. Mary Queen of Scots was also held in the Guildhall briefly as a prisoner in 1569, possibly only for 1/2 nights but she was held in Coventry for a total of 5 weeks. Coombe Abbey Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King James I, was staying at Coombe Abbey in 1605 when the gunpowder plot was formed and quickly failed. For her protection, the princess was brought to the city where she could be protected and armour and weapons to protect her were issued from St Mary’s
Guildhall. She eventually married and became Queen of Bohemia, later being buried at Westminster Abbey. One of her sons later became known as Prince Rupert of the Rhine, who attacked Coventry during the Civil War leading a royalist army. Her father King James I visited in 1617. Baginton and Caludon Richard II came to the city in 1398 to watch combat between the Duke of Norfolk and Duke of Hereford fight on Gosford Green. They stayed at the castles of Baginton and Caludon the night before combat but it was stopped before both men crossed swords and both were banished from England. The Duke of Hereford, Henry Bolingbroke later returned, taking the crown and became Henry IV. The captured Richard was initially brought to the city as a prisoner.
Prince Arthur visited in 1498 when only 12 years old but died before he could be king and his younger brother took the crown and became Henry VIII. Broadgate Elizabeth I visited the city in 1565, and entered via the old Bishop Gate and later entered Broadgate where she was greeted by crowds. She stayed for two days. Charles I During the Civil War in 1642, this king tried to enter the city but was pushed back at the wall and had to camp nearby. Later in 1662, under the orders of his son Charles II, the wall was slighted so it could never again refuse entry like it did to his father. Henry VII visited not long after his victory at the Battle of Bosworth.

oventry is a hub for developing and creating talent with many gifted performers learning their skills within the city and achieving phenomenal success in a host of genres from music, art and film to theatre and dance. In this edition Mick McLaughlin caught up with Jill Freeman who runs local dance school “Freeman Dance” to discover why she believes it’s important to nurture and support talent, her pupils passion for dance and why her school might just be about to put the city in the national spotlight once again on Britain’s Got Talent!
So you’re through to the last stages in the Britain’s Got Talent auditions how does it feel? All our children are so excited! It has been a fantastic experience so far. Our BGT dancers are all aged between 7 and 11 and they are working really well together as a team. Their enthusiasm and joy of dance is incredible. I am really proud of all our students and our team of teachers and we have fantastic support from parents too. It must have been a lengthy and exhausting period, tell us about what the school has had to go through to get this far? It’s our first experience of BGT and we didn’t know what to expect, so we took 76 primary school age students to the NEC in December to see what it was like! We had a really fantastic day, the BGT organisers and the film crew made our children feel really special. Ours is the biggest dance troupe that has ever entered for BGT. Did you or the children get to meet the celebrity judges? If so any star struck moments? After going through at the NEC, our children danced on stage at the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham for the judges, Michael McIntyre, Amanda Holden and David Hasslehoff. The highlight of the day for most of the kids was meeting Ant and Dec, who attempted to give all 76 of them a high 5 as they bounced off stage after receiving their 3 yes’s!
46 Feel Alive Spring 2010
How long has Freeman Dance been running and what inspired you to open it? Freeman Dance opened in Coventry in 1982. From the beginning the aim was to create something special, a well-organised, friendly school with not only great technical training, but a School that would offer its students incredible performance opportunities. We aim to be innovative and ground breaking and take the lead. How many pupils are in the school and what age ranges are they? The school opened with just 4 pupils on the first night, my 2 nieces and their 2 friends! We’ve grown a lot since then and we now have almost 350 students training with us from just 2 years old! We are really proud at Freeman Dance to have over 70 boys, we know we are unique in the city and believe we are unique in the country of having such a high ratio of boys to girls in a non-selective school. What achievements has the school acquired so far? It is a great achievement to be the only dance school in Coventry to produce an annual show at the city’s Belgrade Theatre, giving our students the chance to perform to packed houses in Coventry’s premier professional Theatre every July. We offer our students the chance to perform annually at the West End too and compete in major competitions in Europe. Our students have been incredibly successful in winning Major World Trophies in many dance styles and gaining scholarship places to the country’s leading
dance colleges. In 2010 the Associated Board of Dance nominated no fewer than 8 Freeman Dance students for Senior Ballet Scholarships, an incredible achievement. As a school you’ve performed in many shows throughout the world, tell us about them? We’ve been performing and competing abroad in some of the most important dance competitions in the world since 1999. Some of the most memorable events include; Freeman Dance representing the UK in the International Children’s Festival held each year in Coventry’s twin city of Belgrade, Serbia. Forty of us stayed for a week and had an amazing experience performing in three separate theatres. The final event had young dancers representing their countries from all over the world in one big showcase. It was a sell out performance at the Sava Centre, with an audience of over 4,000 and the Show was televised on national TV. Another year we took a group of 60 to Barcelona where we competed with other dance groups from Europe, Russia and America in a three-day competition. Our group won Major trophies in Irish, Tap and Modern Dance and also made a lot of friends. Our children have also performed in the Fantasyland Theatre in Disneyland Resort, Paris, at the famous Alessandro Bonci Theatre in Italy and we represented the UK at the International Tap Dance Festival in Holland.
FREEMAN DANCE | FEATURES
Has the school produced any major stars? Stuart Carroll danced on the European Tour of ‘Tap Dogs’, which is now currently back in the West End. Ben Prince is performing all over the world, most recently in ‘Spirit of the Dance’ in Las Vegas and ‘Starlight Express’ in Germany. Zoe O’Sullivan is currently dancing in the West End production of ‘Thriller Live’, following the International Tour. Zoe has also danced in the UK Tour of ‘High School Musical’, and the European Tour of ‘Daddy Cool’. Tom McGarrity recently completed a sixmonth contract in ‘Oliver’ in the West End, and also performed in ‘Matilda’ for the RSC over Christmas. Ben Bazeley has performed in both The English Youth Ballet and the National Youth Ballet, and Alexandra Allen, Tom McGarrity, Joshan Patel and Bethany Carter are all in the cast of the successful Debbie Issit film ‘Nativity!’ Many of your pupils go on to teach or help with coaching younger ones at Freeman Dance, there seems to be a lot of loyalty to the school, why do you think this is? There is a remarkable level of loyalty within the school. Many of our former students are now returning with their young children, which is one of the highest compliments we can receive. Many of our teachers trained with Freeman Dance since they were two or three years old. It sounds corny, but it truly is like a family, with everyone supporting each other. Our students who go on to train and dance professionally all come back regularly to share their expertise with our current students. We are very lucky. Your pupils always seem to be well behaved, proud of the school and professional from a young age- how do you manage to achieve this? Thank you. We have very high expectations of our students, and they never let us down! With Freeman Dance they have many opportunities to work in professional theatres from a very early age, they respect that, respond to it and rise to the challenge. We have had countless comments on the good behaviour of our students from the professional companies we have worked with, the latest being the film crew and organisers of BGT. What’s your proudest achievement so far? We have had so many over the years, but one recent one was when we entered a small group to dance in a three-day competition in Italy. Our team were the only UK group to reach the Grand Finals in one of the world’s most prestigious, highly regarded International Dance competitions. We competed in the finals with groups representing Russia, U.S.A, Brazil and Croatia, and gave performances in Irish, Street and Salsa dance. It was an amazing moment when our group won the top overall prize of the competition, the Artistic Directors Trophy. This group included many
of the current teachers of Freeman Dance and it was fantastic to see their hard work rewarded. How important do you think it is for Coventry to have dance schools and foster creativity and dance through home grown talent? Coventry has a wealth of talented and enthusiastic young dancers, it is vital to nurture and support their development and creativity and a pleasure and a privilege to be a part of that process. There is also a lot more to a good dance school than learning to dance; it is also about developing confidence, loyalty, and being part of a team. Our students are from many different backgrounds, they learn to work together, pride, discipline and increase their self-esteem, which are all valuable life skills. Most will not choose a career in dance, but all of these skills, together with firm friendships and happy memories go with them. With all our West End and trips abroad, Freeman Dancers also have an incredible CV when applying for University or work! Do you think parents and families contribute towards this? The parents and families of our students play a major part in the success of our School. We are extremely fortunate to attract supportive, loyal and appreciative parents and families who encourage our dancers and support our team of teachers. Without this support we could not achieve the results we do and our students would not be able to take advantage of all the opportunities we offer. Your school has acquired a lot of interest from boys with many joining why do you think this is? Most recently TV shows featuring dance acts such as Diversity and Flawless have had an impact. However, Freeman Dance has always had a great reputation for the amount of boys we attract and the success they achieve. We had a very high ratio of boys from very early on. I trained with a male dance teacher, Lee Clark and often worked with male dance partners as I was growing up and it was always one of the main aims of the School. We run Boys Only classes as well as mixed classes and we have both male and female teachers in the School. Our boys are extremely welcoming to any new boys who join and now with so many boys always around, it is a reassuring for any new boys who want to give dance a try. What’s unique about Freeman Dance? We are certainly unique in having so many boys training with us each week and unique in that we will be staging the first All Boys Dance Show of its kind at the Belgrade Theatre on May 28th (Tickets on sale now!) We know we are also unique in the amazing performance opportunities we offer our students. Freeman Dance has represented the UK many times in many different parts of the world.
are unique in the level of success we achieve in this area also. How would you like to see the school develop over the next 5 years? We will continue to grow, to innovate and seek out new, exciting and challenging performance opportunities for our students. We also expect the number of students we prepare for professional training to increase, as we have such a wealth of talent and determination present in our younger students coming up through the School. I expect we will be sharing in the success of many of our young dancers and I hope we will continue to attract boys into the School too and celebrate our 100th boy training with us very soon! After all these years of teaching dance do you think you can recognise talent instantly and how do you nurture this? Some children are very natural dancers and performers and others take a little longer to develop. It is incredible what can be achieved with determination, persistence and a genuine love of dance. The right technical training is of course essential, but with encouragement, belief and above all, a child really wanting to dance, the results can be inspiring. I became a Senior Dance Examiner for the Associated Board of Dance in 1987 and I am now a member of the Grand Council of Dance and within these roles I have worked with thousands of young dancers all over the UK. From this it is clear that although some children display a very obvious talent, there are also others that can achieve great things with the right training and encouragement. If you get through to the live finals what can we expect from Freeman Dance? Our students have come on so well during this competition, their focus, their confidence and their teamwork have all developed dramatically, so I expect they will achieve a truly remarkable performance! We have such an energetic and happy group of young dancers, we don’t put any pressure on them at all, but encourage them to have fun and enjoy the moment! We are planning an exciting, entertaining and fast moving new dance with lots of fun and vitality. It has been a great journey so far and if we reach the finals it will be a bonus but if not we will all have had a fantastic experience along the way. And finally what’s the best piece of advice you’d give to any boy or girl who has a dream and wants to dance? Believe in yourself and never give up. Dance is a competitive industry to enter but the rewards can be fantastic and most dancers and dance teachers could not imagine doing anything else. It is important to train at a good school with excellent technical training, continually expanding performance opportunities and one with a forward looking and ambitious future. One just like Freeman Dance in fact!
Our reputation for preparing students for acceptance to the major dance colleges in the UK is increasing every year and I believe we

KING OF THE
DANCEFLOOR A
s a DJ, Coventry born Paul Morrell, started his journey in the local Coventry clubs The Foundry, Ikon and Demand. Gradually building up his reputation, Paul has now filled dancefloors for just over a decade gracing the turntables at some of the nations most proliffic nightclubs, parties and underground venues. Morrell holds the prestigious accolade of being one of the few DJs to have performed in every room at the world renowned ‘Ministry of Sound’ club in London UK. In addition Paul has performed for Gatecrasher, Cream, Polysexual, Tidy, Atomik & Judgement Sunday in Ibiza, and is a regular face at The Gallery in London, working with dance music Royalty and performing on the same bill as artists such as Armin Van Buuren, Sander Van Doorn, Paul Oakenfold, Mauro Picotto and Paul Van Dyk.
As a producer and remixer, Paul has worked with artists from across the dance music spectrum from that of hard dance and trance icons such as Lisa Lashes, Stimulator, BK and Anne Savage, to commercial dance ‘A’ Listers Sonique, 4Strings, Blue Pearl & KKlass. His work has been supported by major radio DJs including BBC Radio 1’s Judge Jules, Dave Pearce and Eddie Halliwell, as well as on Paul Van Dyk’s ‘Sound Garten’ show in Germany and Riley and Durants Galaxy dance show. His production “Lights off” received Judge Jules’ prestigious “Tried and Tested” accolade for an impressive three weeks in a row.
“Give Me Love” is released on 6th April
In January 2010 Paul was honoured by Ministry of Sound at The Gallerys annual awards, at which he won the award for “Best Breakthrough Artist of 2009”, fighting off competition from other UK based artists, and putting him on the winners board with the likes of Armin Van Buuren, Sander Van Doorn and Judge Jules. Paul has now turned his talents to writing and producing his own releases and has joined up with founder Sugababe, Mutya Buena for this year’s summer smash “Give Me Love”. The track is already tipped for huge success and Paul has been approached by other artists for future collaborations.
48 Feel Alive Spring 2011
Feel Alive caught up with Paul during his busy schedule and got the lowdown on his musical influences, favourite hangouts and why he’d like to collaborate with the legend that is Mark Ronson... So Paul, you grew up in Coventry and went to Coundon Court School, what have been your favourite places to hang out in the city? When I first started going out, I loved the Foundry in Gosford St. The Lighthouse was also a favourite! Obviously now Classique@ Careys of course!!! So what inspired you to become a DJ? I’ve always been inspired by Pete Tong and have appreciated his music from an early age. What are your influences? Too many to list! Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, Human League, Sasha & Jon Digweed, Boy George, Sonique, Fatboy Slim, Mark Ronson... how much time do you have?! Where do you get your inspiration for writing tracks? They just happen... I can’t really say a specific event on the tracks I’ve written so far but who knows – maybe a future track will see the backlog of emotions being poured out!
CELEBRITY INTERVIEW | FEATURES
What do you think of the local music scene? Bands like The Enemy have really raised the profile of Coventry. There are many acts that I tip to make it big including Pint Shot Riot, Vicky Jackson (who I’m also collaborating with shortly!) & No One Jones. Coventry has so much to offer and it’s great that these acts are inspiring up and coming artists to go for it. Do you record in Coventry or do you base yourself in London? Both really – I record the music in Coventry but depending on the location of the artist I sometimes go to a London studio to make it easier. You’re releasing a track with ex Sugababe Mutya – tells us about her? Mutya was amazing to work with, a professional from the start. She has such an iconic unique voice, I knew from the second she started singing that this was going to be huge. I’d like to think our collaboration had a part to play in her return to music! Seriously though, I couldn’t rate her any higher – I’d record every song with her if I could! And finally, who would you like to record with and why? Mark Ronson because he’s really cutting edge and I relate to him musically.
