6 HISTORY OF COVENTRY

visitCOVENTRY.CO.UK

Coventry Historic City Coventry has forever been known for both its exciting and eventful history. Starting life as a sparsely populated Saxon village, the city’s history has experienced enormous changes since its foundation as the small hamlet it once was to the successful and metropolitan city it is today.

1043 – Leofric, the local Earl and his wife Godiva founded a Benedictine monastery in Coventry.

1345 – Coventry was given

its first Charter, granting local townspeople certain rights.

1769 – The first stretch of the

Coventry Canal was built. By 1790 it had connected the town to the Trent and the Mersey.

1800’s 1838 – The railway reaches Coventry.

1849– The last public execution in Coventry took place in front of County Hall.

1889– Coventry City Football Club is founded.

From its early development, Coventry has been firmly placed at the forefront of industry. Silk ribbon weaving, watch making and car production have each contributed to Coventry’s strong and positive industrial reputation. During the 1800’s, Coventry’s motor industry flourished, fast becoming the nation’s car manufacturing hub; Jaguar, Rover, Triumph and Riley plus many more all originated within the city. Shortly afterwards, Coventry’s workforce similarly found itself suitably positioned to become world leader in the cycle industry.

HISTORY OF COVENTRY

1900’s 1914 – The first motorbuses ran in Coventry. 1920 – Coventry Council House is officially opened.

1948 – Coventry’s famous Lady

Godiva statue is unveiled. Within the same year, Princess Elizabeth laid the foundation stone of the new city centre.

November 14th, 1940 saw Coventry subjected to the most single concentrated attack on a British city during World War 2. Lasting a total of 11 hours, the raid completely destroyed over 43,000 homes along with the famous St Michael’s Cathedral, devastating the city but the residents collective spirit could not be broken. Coventry’s new Cathedral, built in 1962 was constructed in dedication to international peace and reconciliation, fondly considered by residents as a symbol of hope and new beginnings.

1960 – The first mosque in Coventry was built in Eagle Street.

1970 – Coventry Polytechnic

was founded before becoming a University in 1992.

7

1980 – The cruel twist of a

crippling recession, fuelled by an oil crisis and city wide factory closures gave the city a bleak and hopeless attitude during the 1980’s, articulately voiced by Coventry based band, ‘The Specials’ in their hugely successful track, ‘Ghost Town’.

The 21st Century 2004 – Both University Square and Millennium place are opened. Several decades onwards, Coventry now boasts two winning universities, ‘Coventry University’ and ‘Warwick University’, business and science parks to rival the most successful in the country and has undergone huge redevelopment to become a thriving and lively place to both live and visit. The people of Coventry shall never forget the often troubled past of their city yet are hugely proud of its history, culture and breathtaking architecture which has helped them triumph to expect an exciting and prosperous future.
