THE BAND Ranky Tanky (a Gullah phrase for “get funky”) is a band of five lifelong friends from the South Carolina Lowcountry, where life is laced with African ways. Their music is rooted in a culture that has shaped American art, food, language, and attitude. That culture, its people, and their mother tongue are called Gullah. Based in Charleston, they have established themselves as passionate global ambassadors for their local culture and community, helping to faithfully preserve the traditions originated by African Americans in the coastal South during slavery, keeping them alive through the present day. Ranky Tanky has been featured on NPR’s Fresh Air, the TODAY show, PBS NewsHour, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. It was recently the subject of a 10-page profile in Oxford American’s “Southern Music Issue” devoted to South Carolina, and was named 2020 Artist of The Year by the Charleston City Paper. Ranky Tanky has achieved many firsts for South Carolina’s West African-rooted Gullah community since its formation, earning yet another milestone earlier this year at the GRAMMY Awards® by taking home the Best Regional Roots Album prize for their sophomore release, Good Time. The album combines songs carried down through generations in the Sea Islands of

the Southeastern United States with the band’s first original songs inspired by Gullah tradition. It’s full of playful game songs, ecstatic shouts, and heartbreaking spirituals, and hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Chart over the summer. In Ranky Tanky’s hands, this style of music has been described as “soulful honey to the ears” (NPR) while being covered by The New York Times, NPR’s Fresh Air, and the TODAY show, which had the band on for a performance earlier this year. Gullah Gullah people from the Sea Islands of South Carolina are the descendants of Africans captured along Africa’s rice coast. In the so-called new world, the enslaved toiled under the hot Carolina sun along the Atlantic coast. From this bondage came Gullah, a mixture of African and English styles. This culture has influences across America. Scholars estimate that a third of the people of African descent in this country are the children of those shackled ancestors who came through the port of Charleston. Today, emerging from the heart of this still fertile cultural epicenter, these four Gullah descendants and one disciple have joined together to revive a heartland of American music born in their own backyards.

the 2003 season of American Idol. From there she toured and recorded alongside successful artists, including Kelly Clarkson, Maroon 5, Clay Aiken, Miranda Lambert, and David Foster. He has performed internationally with diverse ensembles, such as The Charleston Jazz Orchestra, Houston Person, Gregory Hines, and Rene Marie. Quiana Parler (Vocalist) has spent over 20 years as the most sought-after vocalist in the Lowcountry. Known locally for years prior, she rose to national prominence after her success on

Winning multiple grants through the U.S. Department of State, he has toured worldwide as a Cultural Ambassador. Since 2014, Ross has been a teaching artist through NYC’s renowned cultural institution Carnegie Hall. Through community-based projects, Ross has facilitated a variety of musical experiences, ranging from stand-alone concerts to intensive year-long creative workshops designed to have a powerful impact on participants’ daily lives. Through songwriting, choral, and composition projects, Ross has helped

juveniles and adults in the justice system build a positive sense of self and strengthen bonds to family and community. In hospitals, Ross has offered performances that reinforce positive healthcare messages. www.clayross.com “Mr. Ross is a very deft guitarist with a rich vocabulary of folk, blues, and jazz at his disposal.” (The Wall Street Journal) Charlton Singleton (Trumpet, Vocals) is the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra, a 20-piece jazz ensemble of some of the finest professional musicians in the Southeast, and the resident big band in Charleston, South Carolina. He has toured across Europe and throughout the United States and has shared the stage with and/or worked with some of most talented entertainers in the world. In July 2020, Charlton released a contemporary smooth jazz/R&B solo album, Date Night. Outside of music and entertainment, he is a devoted husband and proud father of two. www.charltonsingleton.com
