2019–2020 ANNUAL REPORT

1

DIRECTOR’S CORNER Dear Friends, I’m delighted to share with you the Hylton Performing Arts Center’s Annual Report for 2019-20. In its pages you’ll find evidence of the impact that this beautiful venue has had on the many communities that it serves, including artists, audiences, students of all ages, and civic and business groups. You’ll read how the 2019-20 season began much like previous seasons, but ended with dark and silent stages; how the new Education and Rehearsal Wing completes the original vision; and most importantly, how lives are impacted everyday by the inspirational work that happens here. You’ll also read the triumphant stories of how the Hylton Center has risen to the occasion to ensure that the arts create community even amid this isolating moment. I encourage you to dig into the stories, charts, and graphs to get a full picture of the vibrant arts community we continue to foster. And of course, please feel free to be in touch with any questions and comments. Yours sincerely,

Rick Davis Executive Director, Hylton Performing Arts Center

YEAR IN REVIEW The Hylton Center embarked on new and exciting endeavors in FY 2019-2020, both before and during the pandemic. While the Hylton Center’s season ended differently than expected, it was filled with inspiring arts entertainment, events, and educational offerings. Here are some highlights from the past year:

AMERICAN FESTIVAL POPS ORCHESTRA

• 85,000+ people visited the venue from July 2019 through early March 2020. The venue was closed from March through the remainder of the year due to COVID-19 restrictions. • The number of Arts Partners increased to seven with the addition of long-time Arts Affiliates Asaph Dance Ensemble and Creative and Performing Arts Center (CAPAC). The Arts Alliance program was also formalized, comprising Arts Partners and Arts Affiliates. • Rental activity by clients external to the Hylton Center remained robust. • On-site classes for learners of all ages, including offerings by Lifelong Learning Institute, Manassas and the Veterans and the Arts Initiative. • The Veterans and the Arts Initiative received its first state appropriation from the Commonwealth of Virginia, increased the number of community arts programs and workshops, and was awarded contracts in support of Creative Forces: NEA Military Healing Arts Network. • The grand opening of the Education and Rehearsal Wing (December) followed by a well-attended community Family Open House (February), as well as other activities in the new Wing prior to the pandemic closure.

YEAR IN REVIEW CONTINUED • The Hylton Performing Arts Center raised a total of $797,519 in philanthropic support in FY 20. • Education Initiatives increased in scope and reach through field trip performances. Other accomplishments included the launch of Monday School Matinees, master classes with professional artists, and sensory-friendly Community-Based Instruction (CBI) facility tours. • 16 newly trained theater technicians graduated from the expanded Technical Theater Boot Camp summer program. • The annual Arts Alive! festival was presented with co-presenter Prince William County Arts Council. • The 10th Anniversary Gala pivoted from an in-person event to a highly-attended virtual event, complete with at-home meal and wine delivery. • Hylton at Home launched, providing an online platform of curated arts experiences, including digital concerts, releases of previously recorded content, behind-the-scenes talks with artists, and more. Though the spring 2020 portion of the Hylton Center season witnessed cancelations in response to the global pandemic, the Hylton Center swiftly and successfully pivoted to find new and innovative ways to continue to create community through the arts in the digital realm and will continue to do so until it is safe to return to live performances and events.

DID YOU KNOW? Civic Involvement The Hylton Center hosts naturalization ceremonies and police and fire department graduations throughout the calendar year and was the site for a Commonwealth budget hearing and a nationally televised Bloomberg TV town hall meeting.

Girls’ Tech Day It was the Hylton Center’s second year as a host site for Girls’ Tech Day, an event produced by Amazon Web Services. Over 600 girls from Grades 3 through 12 experienced the exciting world of S.T.E.A.M. through hands-on activities and workshops.

Arts Alliance Shows Resilience Despite the cancelation of spring performances and recitals due to the pandemic, Arts Alliance organizations reached as many audience members as the previous season. This growing support is a representation of the Hylton Center’s impact in the community and will be vital in ensuring that local arts organizations thrive in this uncertain time. Veterans and the Arts Initiative The Veterans and the Arts Initiative was awarded a new contract from Creative Forces: National Endowment for the Arts Military Healing Arts Network to develop an interface between military and veteran services, artists and arts organizations, healthcare services, and the community at large.

Education Initiatives The Hylton Center welcomed 14,299 field trip students to performances in Merchant Hall.

Thank You Volunteers Hylton Center volunteers donated over 2,700 hours of their time helping usher and manage on-site events. 5

COMMUNITY IMPACT Hylton at Home Brings Digital Arts Programming to Community In March 2020, George Mason University canceled all campus activities and events in response to COVID-19. Though the Hylton Center’s presentation of traditional live performances was suspended, the venue, along with its sister venue, the Center for the Arts in Fairfax, swiftly pivoted to offering a collection of free, online artistic content to patrons. On April 2, Mason Arts at Home was launched, bringing the arts directly to people’s homes. As part of the Mason Arts family, the Hylton Center initially stayed connected to its dedicated community of arts supporters and enthusiasts through Mason Arts at Home. From that programming initiative, Hylton at Home was soon born and continues to bring the arts directly to our audiences through virtual Q&A’s with artists, free access to previously recorded content, and livestreamed performances. In spring 2020, more than 80 digital programs were viewed more than 200,000 times by audiences around the world.

Education and Rehearsal Wing Family Open House The Hylton Center’s new Education and Rehearsal Wing opened in December 2019, completing the original vision for the Hylton Center, including an expansion of educational offerings, as well as an opportunity for the artists and arts educators of our community to fully facilitate the entire life cycle of artistic creation. The new Wing design, comprising 17,000 additional square feet of space for rehearsals, classes, and performances, as well as two additional lobby spaces, was informed by both programming experience and a clear understanding of what this region requires to excel as a sophisticated arts community. To celebrate this milestone, the Hylton Center hosted a free Family Open House in February 2020 in conjunction with the Hylton Family Series performance of The Rainbow Fish, and invited the community to come out and experience this exciting, new space. Hundreds of families attended and participated in interactive arts and crafts activities and instrument petting zoos, while enjoying live music, face painting, and more. Families also interacted with Hylton Center community Arts Partners and learned about these talented organizations through demonstrations and activity tables.

Arts Alliance Program In FY20, the Hylton Center’s formerly named Resident Arts Partners acquired ARTfactory PIED PIPER THEATRE the new moniker: Hylton Center Arts Alliance. Approved by the Hylton Performing Arts Center Executive Board, this revision included the codification of program parameters. The newly named Arts Alliance program continues to support local non-profit arts organizations through rental discounts and general marketing support and comprises two local categories: Arts Partners and Arts Affiliates. Both groups enjoy a discounted venue rental rate, and the Arts Partners receive scheduling priority. The following seven Arts Partners have been affiliated with the Hylton Center since its opening in 2010: Asaph Dance Ensemble, Creative and Performing Arts Center (CAPAC), Manassas Ballet Theatre, Manassas Chorale, Manassas Symphony Orchestra, Prince William Little Theatre, and Youth Orchestras of Prince William. A Hylton Center Arts Affiliate membership is open by application to all non-profit performing groups in the Prince William area. The Hylton Center currently has five Arts Affiliate members: Old Bridge Chamber Orchestra, Real Life Productions, ARTfactory Pied Piper Theatre, Northern Virginia Ballet, and Virginia National Ballet.

8

Performing Arts for Kids Performing Arts for Kids (PAK) was established in 2013 by long-time volunteers of the Hylton Performing Arts Center, Mary Postma and Claire Machosky-Ullman. A 100% volunteer-led organization, the non-profit was dedicated to giving children opportunities to experience the arts at the Hylton Center. During its tenure, PAK introduced thousands of students in Prince William County to the arts through Hylton Center field trip performances, masterclasses, and hands-on experiences. Building upon the organization’s success, PAK dissolved the 501(c)3 in 2019 and was incorporated into the Friends of the Hylton Center, establishing the new Performing Arts for Kids (PAK) Fund. Now, the organization’s volunteers work even more closely with Hylton Center staff to raise funds, as through their annual ornament sale, which supports the Education Initiatives at the Hylton Center. PAK’s legacy lives on through the lives of the tens of thousands of students to whom they introduced the magic of the arts.

VETERANS AND THE ARTS INITIATIVE The Hylton Center’s Veterans and the Arts Initiative experienced another remarkable year in FY20. This was the Initiative’s first year to receive a state appropriation from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Community arts programming included an increased number of Dominion Energy Veterans Guitar Workshops; a successful Songwriting Series for Military Children in collaboration with Mason Community Arts Academy; annual Celebrating Veterans and the Arts events (including a performance by The U.S. Army Band “Downrange”); and visual art workshop series led by Martin Cervantez and Andi Benge. In response to the pandemic, Veterans and the Arts programming quickly and successfully pivoted to virtual workshops and also supported the Virginia Women Veterans Summit in May through a virtual exhibition of women Veterans photography. Recently, the Veterans and the Arts Initiative has become an increasingly important influencer in the field through its partnerships and research. Through contracts in support of Creative Forces®: NEA Military Healing Arts Network, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the U.S. Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs and the state and local arts agencies with administrative support provided by Americans for the Arts and the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, ukulele workshops have been measured using rigorous research standards and methods. The program was also an important collaborator with Mason’s College of Education and Human Development and the College of Health and Human Services, in completing research about the effects of arts engagement in older adults, which was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. The Initiative also publishes the findings of its program research in international, peer-reviewed journals. George Mason University received the honor of hosting the 2019 Creative Forces Convening, which focused on community-based arts programs that serve military-connected communities across the country. The program is also honored to have been awarded a new contract from Creative Forces: National Endowment for the Arts Military Healing Arts Network to develop an interface between military and veteran services, artists and arts organizations, healthcare services, and the community at large.

EDUCATION INITIATIVES The Hylton Center offers artistic programming and initiatives to allow every community member to experience the arts in meaningful ways. These educational programs expand access to the Hylton Center’s programs for learners of all ages.

Education Initiative highlights from the 2019-2020 season include: • Marit Majeske, former Hylton Center Front of House Manager, became the Hylton Center’s first, full-time Education Coordinator.

THE RAINBOW FISH

• Over the course of the 2019-2020 school year, the Hylton Center welcomed 14,299 field trip students to performances in Merchant Hall prior to the COVID-19 health crisis that resulted in the cancelation of three spring performances. • 11,323 (or 79%) of students who attended performances at the Hylton Center came from Prince William County, the City of Manassas, or the City of Manassas Park. • The Hylton Center received commendation from the Virginia School Boards Association from Manassas Park City Public Schools for “support for local school board work and for the public school students in our community.” • Last year the Hylton Center held three masterclasses for both local high school and George Mason University students. • Cellist Matt Haimovitz led a masterclass with three high school cellists in October 2019. • World-class classical guitarist and Hylton Presents artist MILOŠ taught a masterclass for two of George Mason University’s classical guitar students in March 2020. • Percussion ensemble LADAMA, a Latin alternative band of four women musicians and activists, visited Manassas Park High School and led a masterclass with the percussion class and concert band.

12

The new Education and Rehearsal Wing officially opened in December 2019 with a ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by a community Family Open House in February 2020 tied to the Hylton Family Series performance The Rainbow Fish. The free Family Open House included coloring and craft stations, a selfie photo booth, a community art project, a live performance by the founder of Hot Peas ‘N Butter, demonstrations and activities led by Hylton Center Arts Partners, and an instrument petting zoo with Mason Community Arts Academy. The Hylton Center launched Monday School Matinee performances, a series created to connect with homeschool and private school groups, as well as additional public schools. The 2019/2020 Monday School Matinees comprised two performances: Moon Mouse and The Rainbow Fish and Other Tales, both of which took place the Monday following the weekend Hylton Family Series performances.

YEAR IN PHILANTHROPY • Philanthropy at the Hylton Center was greatly impacted by the COVID-19 health crisis. The inability to welcome prospective donors into the Hylton Center to experience the magic of the arts firsthand had a significant effect on obtaining annual philanthropic goals. There were, however, many 2019/2020 successes in philanthropy, including a sold-out Gala, retention of corporate sponsors, and several spaces named in the new Education and Rehearsal Wing. • The Friends of the Hylton Center donated more than $138,512 in support of the Hylton Center, while also providing significant volunteer support for a growing number of performance series. • The 10th Anniversary Gala sold out three months prior to the date of the event, which then successfully pivoted from its April date to a July virtual event in response to the pandemic. Final results will be published in the FY21 Annual Report. Honorees for the evening were the Reston-based law firm, Odin, Feldman, and Pittleman, PC. • The Veterans and the Arts Initiative realized $63,456 in philanthropic support for its community-based programs. • The Hylton Center’s Endowment witnessed its largest pay-out yet: $226,750 contributing to critical Annual Fund needs. • In total, over $673,202 was raised in support of the Hylton Center’s Annual Fund in FY20. • In addition to the Annual Fund, the Hylton Center was in its fourth year of the public phase of its Capital and Endowment Campaign. In total, the Hylton Center raised $124,317 for the Education and Rehearsal Wing and the Endowment in FY20, and laid groundwork for future success and completion of the Campaign. Of particular note were the new namings of The Waters Walk, The Edwards Hallway, and the large (2) and small (4) practice rooms. • In December 2019, the Hylton Center celebrated the grand opening of the new Education and Rehearsal Wing with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception. Over 180 distinguished guests attended this highly anticipated occasion, which included a performance by the students in Mason’s Opera Studies program and self-led tours of the new Wing. • In total, the Hylton Performing Arts Center raised a total of $797,519 in philanthropic support in FY20. Total FY20 Philanthropic Support is comprised of a combination of Annual Fund support, including gifts and new pledges made in FY20, as well as Capital and Endowment Campaign gifts and new pledges made in FY20. 17
