LESLIE ODOM, JR. Saturday, April 30 at 8 p.m.

Known globally for his Tony Award-winning performance as Aaron Burr in the hit musical Hamilton, Broadway superstar Leslie Odom, Jr. presents a thrilling concert for the Hylton Center’s 12th Anniversary Gala! Odom, Jr. is a multifaceted performer whose career spans theater, television, film, and GRAMMY Awardwinning music. Most recently he starred as the legendary singer Sam Cooke in the critically acclaimed Amazon film adaptation of the Olivier Award-nominated play, One Night in Miami. His portrayal of the soul icon has been met with widespread praise, earning him nominations for an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Critics’ Choice Award, Golden Globe Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards, among others. Odom, Jr. also wrote, composed, and performed the film’s original song, “Speak Now,” for which he was nominated for an Oscar and received a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Song along with several other nominations. Other recent projects include voicing “Owen Tillerman” in Josh Gad’s animated musical-comedy series Central Park and starring alongside Cynthia Erivo in the Harriet Tubman biopic Harriet. In 2018, he added author to his resume with the release of his book, Failing Up: How to Take Risks, Aim Higher, and Never Stop Learning. He has released four albums and his film and TV credits include The Many Saints of Newark, Love in the Time of Corona, Murder on the Orient Express, Only, Red Tails, and Smash. Saturday, September 18 at 4 p.m. Join The U.S. Army Band Downrange for a free celebratory concert to kick off the 2021-2022 Hylton Center season. Downrange is a part of the most prestigious military band in the U.S. Army and supports the men and women of the Armed Services through popular music while reaching all audiences with their repertoire of rock, pop, country, R&B, and inspirational signature patriotic arrangements. FREE

Straight from Nashville, The Grascals make their debut appearance at the Hylton Center with a lively outdoor performance filled with Bluegrass and classic country tunes. This six-piece band won over audiences at the Grand Old Opry with their blend of modern sophistication steeped in traditional charm. The Grascals have earned three GRAMMY nominations and two Entertainer of the Year Awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association. $25 adults, $12.50 youth through Grade 12

Bumper Jacksons are painting America’s story from the streets of New Orleans to Appalachian hollers. Unafraid to scrap together new sounds from forgotten 78’s, the Bumper Jacksons elegantly balance paying homage to traditions while fashioning their own unique, playful style. 2021 Wammie Award-winning artist Carly Harvey leads the energetic ensemble Kiss & Ride in a lively fusion of original music, blues classics, and unique arrangements of pop. Uncover the mysteries behind some of the most familiar piano works by Beethoven, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, and more in Classics Declassified. Virtuoso pianist Jeffrey Siegel acts as your musical detective and guide to unlock the intrigue and beauty of Beethoven’s “Farewell Sonata”—who was leaving, and why was the composer so deeply affected? Uncover what is Turkish about Mozart’s “Turkish Rondo,” understand how Rachmaninoff could grow to hate one of his best-known solo works, the C-Sharp minor Prelude, and discover the reasons why Debussy was so reluctant to publish Clair de Lune. Siegel’s “concerts with commentary” format gives the back story behind the piece he is about to perform. “A musical bridge-builder in action... METROPOLITAN JAZZ ORCHESTRA Swingin’ with the Met Saturday, October 30 at 8 p.m. Calling all Jitterbugs! Come celebrate the Big Band Era with the coolest cats in town, Northern Virginia’s own Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra. Artistic Director and alto sax virtuoso Jim Carroll leads this distinguished ensemble comprising the most remarkable jazz performers in the metro region, who will perform music from the libraries of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Woody Herman, Cab Calloway, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Kenton, Benny Goodman, and more. A Concert Celebrating Veterans and the Arts Sunday, November 14 at 7 p.m. Drawing on traditional folk, country, R&B, and spirituals, The War and Treaty have earned praise for their dynamic and passionate performances. Named Americana Music Awards 2019 Emerging Act of the year, this husband-and-wife duo of Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Blount will dazzle in their debut at Merchant Hall, performing songs from their two acclaimed albums, Healing Tide and Hearts Town. The powerhouse couple brings their very relatable struggles to their music including Trotter’s battle with PTSD as an Army Veteran. Their song “Five More Minutes” stresses their uplifting message of staying the course and not giving up. CHANTICLEER A Chanticleer Christmas Sunday, November 28 at 4 p.m. It would not be the holidays without Chanticleer and their singular harmonic blend of 12 male voices ranging from soprano to bass. Welcome back our favorite holiday treat, spreading peace, joy, and a cappella with their festive holiday program, featuring American hymns, Christmas carols from around the world, Gospel melodies, and Renaissance motets. A Swingin’ Little Christmas stars Jane Lynch (Glee’s Sue Sylvester, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Sophie Lennon) and Kate Flannery (The Office’s Meredith). THE POLISH WIENIAWSKI PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA Lech Wałęsa Freedom Tour

Wojciech Rodek, conductor / Paweł Wakarecy, pianist Saturday, February 5 at 8 p.m. Lutosławski: Mala Suite Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 2 Schubert: Symphony No. 9 in C Major, The Great Traveling far from the thriving cultural hotspot in Gdańsk on the Baltic Sea, the Polish Wieniawski Philharmonic Orchestra will rouse the spirits with an evening of innovative works that explore themes of resiliency and freedom. Formed in 1944 out of the ashes and rubble left at the end of World War II, the orchestra has grown to become the largest music institution in Eastern Poland and often features the most prominent Polish musicians and many world-famous artists. Under the direction of esteemed Maestro Wojciech Rodek, the program features Polish composers Witold Lutosławski’s Mala Suite and Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2, as well as pieces by other composers including Schubert, Grieg, Brahms and more. Piano soloist Paweł Wakarecy, first-prize winner of the 16th International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, will perform with the orchestra. $55, $47, $33

BALLET HISPÁNICO Noche de Oro: A Celebration of 50 Years Saturday, February 19 at 8 p.m. Founded 50 years ago by National Medal of Arts recipient, Tina Ramírez, Ballet Hispánico is a renowned Latinx dance organization and was recently recognized by the Ford Foundation as one of America’s Cultural Treasures. Ballet Hispánico brings communities together to celebrate and explore Latinx cultures through innovative dance performances, transformative dance training, and enduring community engagement experiences. Now they will grace the Merchant Hall stage with five pieces, including one that celebrates choreographer Gustavo Ramírez Sansano’s 19 years with Ballet Hispánico and the vulnerability, care, and hope that comes with each artistic endeavor; Batucada Fantástica, which examines the music and dancers of Carnival in Rio; and more. As an Artist-in-Residence, they will also work with the community through classes and workshops during the week leading up to the performance. $48, $41, $29 This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

VELOCITY IRISH DANCE Sunday, March 6 at 4 p.m.

Get ready for Velocity Irish Dance, a highoctane celebration of the past, the present, and—most especially—the future of Irish dance. In their exhilarating performance, two dancing wunderkinds—James Devine (the Guinness World Record holder for the Fastest Feet in the World) and David Geaney (five-time World Champion Irish dancer)—are joined on stage by an incredible Celtic band, a scratch DJ, and other award-winning hoofers. They dance at lightning-fast speeds, tackling impossible scuffles and shuffles. Become a classical music insider with virtuoso pianist Jeffrey Siegel. Popular with classical music lovers and newcomers alike, his unique “concerts with commentary” format gives the story behind the music. In this concert, Siegel explores enchanting musical narratives by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Manuel de Falla, Carl Maria von Weber, and Aaron Copland. Get the inside scoop on these works that tell specific stories with sound. Siegel is “one of those few pianists who impresses first as interpreter. ACROBUFFOS Air Play

Sunday, April 24 at 4 p.m. Umbrellas fly, fabrics soar over the audience, giant balloons swallow people, and snow swirls, filling the stage with a spectacle the whole family will enjoy! Without words, the Acrobuffos enrapture audiences with a beautiful visualization of air itself. This physical comedy troupe presents a stunning visual poem that brings to life the very air we breathe. Full of color, light, and laughter, Air Play is “a joy from start to finish,” raves the Sydney Morning Herald. “You feel you’re witnessing divine natural occurrences rather than carefully devised circus stunts,” praises the Hartford Courant. Saturday, May 14 at 8 p.m. The American Festival Pops Orchestra presents a musical tribute to Broadway in an evening of popular melodies, timeless ballads, and nostalgic favorites. Maestro Anthony Maiello reunites with Broadway veteran and soprano Lisa Vroman, who starred as Christine in The Phantom of the Opera, and was the first to play both Fantine and Cosette in Les Misérables, among other acclaimed opera roles. Regarded as a “musical and theatrical marvel” (The San Francisco Chronicle), Ms. Vroman is a regular guest artist with symphonies around the world including San Francisco, Cleveland, Hong Kong, the Boston Pops, and New York Pops. POPOVICH COMEDY PET THEATER Sunday, February 20 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Direct from the Vegas Strip, the Hylton Center welcomes Popovich Comedy Pet Theater. The whole family will be awe-struck by the juggling feats of Gregory Popovich along with the circus tricks of his adorable and spotlightstealing furry and feathered friends. A fifth-generation circus performer, Popovich developed his skills and love of animals performing with the Moscow Circus, Ringling Brothers, and Barnum & Bailey Circus. His popular act, voted the “Best Family Attraction in Las Vegas,” gives his motley crew of more than 30 rescue animals, including dogs, cats, geese, doves, parrots, and even a Shetland pony, a whole new “leash” on life. Witness dogs pretending to be students in a classroom, cats jumping hurdles, and more. Along with the animal antics, clowns, jugglers, and acrobats round out the circus fun.  Fun for all ages.  $15 adults; $10 children

THE OKEE DOKEE PADDINGTON BROTHERS GETS IN A JAM Sunday, March 20 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Bluegrass and American roots music fans, bring your youngins’ to experience the down-home Americana folk music you love with the GRAMMY Award-winning duo, The Okee Dokee Brothers. Long before the duo won four Parents’ Choice Awards, Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing grew up as childhood friends in Denver, Colorado, enjoying outside exploits like rafting down their neighborhood creek and hiking through the Rocky Mountains. Now, they infuse their family-style bluegrass music with childhood wonder and passion for the great outdoors, hoping to inspire children and their parents to create their own backyard adventures and ignite their imagination. “The Okee Dokee Brothers remind us of the American belief that we’re bound for better weather. Their album celebrates everyday explorers, young and old, who rediscover that notion daily,” (NPR’s All Things Considered).

Paddington is in the kitchen cooking up a batch of his favorite jam when he runs out of sugar! He goes next door to borrow a cup from his neighbor, Mr. Curry, who is frantically preparing for a visitor. Paddington volunteers to help, leading to hilarious chaos. Will Paddington be able to fix everything before Mr. Curry’s visitor arrives? With his duffle coat and battered hat, the ever-polite Paddington Bear has delighted audiences for over six decades with his well-intended misadventures in storybooks, on television, and on the big screen. Now is your chance to see the marmaladeloving bear onstage in his newest escapade Paddington Gets in a Jam. A sweet comedy from the creator of the hit production The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show.

In a delightfully unusual pairing, banjoist John Bullard and pianist Markus Compton perform folk-classical fusion music. The charming blend of sound harkens back to the combination of harpsichord and lute, transforming the works of Bach and Vivaldi with the artful and folksy banjo. Bullard’s pioneering musical experimentation is growing an international audience of fans charmed by this unique sound. Featuring George Mason University alum Markus Compton on piano, the program includes works by Schumann, Marcello, and Telemann, as well as some of Bullard’s solo banjo transcriptions of J.S. The Nutcracker: Clara’s Christmas is an original and inspiring interpretation of the traditional ballet, The Nutcracker, and weaves the true meaning of Christmas into the classic story of Clara, the Nutcracker, and the Land of Sweets just in time for the holidays. Original choreography by Robert and Robin Sturm.

THOUGHTS OF SPRING: MIXED PROGRAM Sunday, April 10 at 3:30 p.m.

A lively and thought-provoking mixed program, Asaph’s Director, Daniel Faudree, creates an artistic offering that combines the light-hearted with the heartfelt as an old favorite is brought back to life while bringing new and exciting works to the stage.

April 16, 17, 23, 24 at 3 p.m. A precocious young orphan’s luck changes when she is chosen to spend time as a guest at the home of wealthy businessman Oliver Warbucks. Annie charms her way into the hearts of his household staff, and even the gruff “Daddy Warbucks” can’t help but learn to love this little girl. Set in the early 1950’s in London, England, tennis pro Tony Wendice marries beautiful Margot, who has exactly what Tony loves: beauty and money. The suspenseful plot thickens as Tony schemes to murder his wife for her money, and an American mystery writer, plus a cool, inquisitive investigator enter the picture.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

(TOURING VERSION) December 10 and 17 at 8 p.m. December 11 and 18 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. December 12 and 19 at 2 p.m. The classic story of the mean-spirited, miserly Ebenezer Scrooge comes to life in this cautionary tale about money and happiness. One cold Christmas Eve, Scrooge finds himself alone and visited by three spirits who show him his last chance to escape a horrible fate. The touring version of this holiday classic retains much of the flavor of the original, longer adaptation. At the close of this performance, be prepared to sing along to Prince William Little Theatre’s Choral Christmas Card.

SISTER ACT

March 11 and 18 at 8 p.m. March 12 and 19 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. March 13 and 20 at 2 p.m. This feel-good musical comedy smash based on the hit 1992 film has audiences jumping to their feet! When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is placed in protective custody where she is the least likely to be found: a convent! Filled with gospel music and outrageous dancing, this moving story, performed by a cast of amazing women of all ages, pays tribute to the universal power of friendship.

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF PRINCE WILLIAM

Applications for the 2021–2022 season are now being accepted. New instrumentalists and experienced musicians alike are welcome. New this season: eligibility for the most advanced ensemble has been raised to age 21. Auditions are by invitation only and based on written applications which are due by July 31. BACK TO THE CLASSICS

Saturday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m. The Manassas Symphony Orchestra (MSO) returns to Merchant Hall with a program featuring classical music royalty. With a few months left in Beethoven’s 250th anniversary year, the MSO celebrates with acclaimed violinist, Emil Chudnovsky, performing Beethoven’s extraordinary Violin Concerto in D Major. Chudnovsky has been hailed by The Washington Post as having “Virtuosity…, showmanship, [and] artistry.” The concert closes with the music of Beethoven’s teacher, Haydn, in the delightful Symphony No. 92 in G Major (“Oxford”).

FAMILY CONCERT: COLOR AND LIGHT

Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 3:30 p.m. The Manassas Symphony Orchestra’s (MSO) annual family concert tradition continues with an exploration of musical colors and features Fairfax High School junior flute soloist, Irina Lin, performing Charles Griffes’ Poem. Audiences will also enjoy the world premiere of Virginia composer Jonathan Romeo’s Light, a musical portrait of the magnificent power of the human spirit. The concert closes with the MSO’s exclusive, colorful Music and Light Show Spectacular!

AMADEUS!

Saturday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. Brian Woods, praised for his thoughtful and dynamic performances, joins the Manassas Symphony Orchestra for an all-things-Mozart concert to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A Major. Tchaikovsky’s homage Suite No. 4 (“Mozartiana”) opens the concert, and Mozart’s engaging Symphony No. 38 (“Prague”) caps the evening.

REFLECTION AND HOPE Saturday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Colgan High School senior Angelina Seamster has been playing cello with the Manassas Symphony Orchestra since the 8th grade. Miss Seamster returns as a guest soloist to perform Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major. The orchestra closes the concert and its 2021–2022 season with Beethoven’s own favorite— Symphony No. 8 in F Major.

Take a musical journey with the Chorale, its smaller ensemble, orchestra, and the Greater Manassas Children’s Choir for an evening of music that features “time” as a central theme (songs include “Yesterday,” “Today,” and “Tomorrow.”) Student singers in Grades 2-8 join adults in this moving performance that closes Manassas Chorale’s 28th season.

This fairytale ballet celebrates one of the most famous happily ever after stories ever told. Youth Discount Tickets Half-price tickets are available for children and youth through Grade 12 for all Hylton Presents events. (No discounts are available for the Leslie Odom, Jr. performance.) Children through Grade 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Students Grades 9–12 may attend without an adult, but must have a valid student ID.

Pre and Post-Performance Discussions

Convenient, free parking is available for all Hylton Center events in the lot adjacent to the Hylton Center with ample wheelchair accessible parking in the lot near the main entrance. There is a passenger drop-off area directly in front of the main entrance.

Some performances are accompanied by a lively forum led by local experts or the artists themselves. Discussions are sponsored by the Friends of the Hylton Center and format will vary in fall 2021. The pre-performance discussions begin one hour prior to the performance start time, and are designed to provide a deeper understanding of the forthcoming performance. They are free to ticket holders.
