Say ‘T hanks’ to a Volunteer Volunteers are the backbone of the Filberg Festival; it couldn’t be done without them. They take time out of their summer plans and devote themselves to ensuring the Festival is the success that it is. Festival artisans and entertainers often acknowledge the enthusiastic attitude of our Volunteers and the fun they seem to have doing all the

work that makes the Festival a unique and special experience for so many. So while you’re at the Festival consider smiling and saying thanks to a Volunteer for doing such a great job. You’ll encounter them as greeters, information and ticket booth staff, parking control support, and in many other important roles. Much of their work

happens before the Festival and behind the scenes. To all of our Volunteers who work so tirelessly, we extend our gratitude for your efforts, your dedication and commitment. We appreciate your teamwork, sense of community and the contribution you make to the lasting legacy of the Filberg Festival. You are indispensible!

Filberg gift shop From silk scarves to handmade soaps, visitors to the Filberg Heritage Lodge now have the opportunity to take a memory mory home with them while supporting the facility. The Filberg Lodge Gift Shop opened it’s doors to the public prior to Mother’s Day, and is located on the second floor of rustic, former home of R.J. (Bob) Filberg. “This is really a viable option for the Filberg Lodge to enhance the visitors’ experience,” said board member Val Graham. “We’re on a two-year trial period, but it’s going very well; we’re getting

lots of positive response.” The shop, open Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holiday Mondays, offers a variety of items including vintage jewelry, cups and saucer sets, locally-made wool and more. “We have Floating Stone Enterprise silk scares and purses from Cambodia, and Waterslip Soap Works soap made in Courtenay,” added Graham. The store is entirely staffed by volunteers, and funds raised are turned over to the board for maintenance of the facility, explained Graham. She noted it is important for items to fit in with

the overall theme and ‘feel’ of the lodge, and many people are pleased to discover items that remind them of family. “The cups and saucers remind a lot of people of grandma’s tea set,” said Graham. Large, antique furniture pieces are from Gabriels’ Attic in Union Bay, and fit in well with the theme of the shop, she added. Many items are donated to the store, and Graham adds the shop is always looking for donations of gently used jewelry, pottery, and other items. “It’s great fun to see what sort of things come in,” she noted. The store is hoping to remain open into the fall, co-ordinating it’s schedule with the Tea House. They are planning to remain open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the Filberg Festival, and hope to re-open during the Christmas season offering vintage decorations and gifts. For more information about the Filberg Lodge and Gift Shop, visit www.filberg.com, or to make a donation to the Gift Shop, call Val at 250-339-7659.

Our y r o t s hi As you stroll around the Filberg property, operty, perhaps you’ll take a moment andd imagine what it was like for the Filbergs bergs having this magnificent family home. me. The rustic Lodge was originally designed signed as a summer cottage but, once it was built, R.J. (Bob) Filberg and his wife Florence liked it so much they decided to make it their permanent home in 1935. With their two children, Mary and Robert (Buddy) Jr., the Filbergs had nine acres of Comox beachfront property as their yard. They lived here for many years, developing the grounds and several unique outbuildings into what is described as a “Jewel in the Comox Crown”. Robert Filberg, born in Colorado, had arrived in B.C. with a work party in 1909. His career took off when he married Flossie McCormack, daughter of the vice-president of Canadian Western Lumber Co. By the 1920’s, Filberg was in charge of the company’s logging operations, based at Headquarters Townsite, in what is now Merville. Construction of the Filberg Lodge began in 1929, under the direction of Master builder William Hagarty and was completed in 1935. By that time, Filberg was manager and superintendent of the

Comox Logging and Railway Company, the largest logging concern in coastal British Columbia. The company had 450 employees, six huge steam-powered logging machines, a dozen locomotives, hundreds of miles of track, and sole access to the great Douglas fir forests between Courtenay and Campbell River. Over the years, Comox Logging boomed and towed billions of board feet of logs from Vancouver Island to Fraser Mills at New Westminster – the largest sawmilling operation in the British Empire.

While the family lived here, they undertook extensive landscaping and construction of several unique outbuildings. There are more than 100 majestic trees from all over the world in the park, including London Planes and Atlas and Deodar Cedars. Local trees such as maples also provide shade and privacy. Hundreds of rhododendrons add swaths of colour to the park, as do the beds of annual and perennial flowers. There is even a stream (now man-made) that runs through a natural ravine. When Filberg died in 1977,

he bequeathed the property to the Vancouver Foundation. Alice Bullen, a town councilor, negotiated a contract with the Vancouver Foundation which resulted in them giving annual grants to the Town of Comox which allowed the Town to purchase the property over 20 years. A society was formed to manage the business of the property, under a management agreement with the Town of Comox. The grounds and buildings were in serious disrepair, and the Filberg Lodge and Park Association needed to

do some significant fundraising and so the Filberg Festival came to be started. The property has been designated a heritage site by the Town of Comox. The Filberg Festival continues to be the primary fundraising event of the Filberg Heritage Lodge & Park Association, with the proceeds going towards essential funding for the maintenance operation and restoration of the lodge and grounds. Filberg volunteers believe it is a privilege to be part of such a ongoing, remarkable and beautiful legacy.

NORTHWEST COAST LANDSCAPE PAINTER OIL PAINTINGS OF LIGHT AND COLOUR... I grew up on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, where our family lived in a small cabin by the sea. I am not sure what childhood has to do with influence on as an artist, but I suspect LOTS! We lived in a beautiful place, and what inspires me the most today is visiting wonderful landscape when the light is just "right" and then painting from my experience. The world is a beautiful place and I enjoy attempting to

capture it in paint. I divide my time between winters in Portland, Oregon and summers on Hornby Island, B.C. My summer studio is with Fibre artist Diane Smith at 8120 Central Road, Hornby Island.

Sensory delights See it, hear it, smell it, taste it. That’s right, the Filberg Festival is a multi-sensory delight. And a big part of that delight is the food experience. Embrace it all as you wander around - prepare to be tantalized and amazed at the variety of mouth watering smells, looks and tastes. You’ll find Artisans with carefully handcrafted treats and ideas for you to take home. Our Food Concessions will appeal to a wide variety of tastes, from standard to exotic and decadent. Maybe you have a gusto for tacos, perogies, hamburgers, sausages or souvlaki? Or perhaps it’s greens, salads, falafel, noodles or vegetarian fare you prefer? How about ice cream, fruit kebabs or smoothies? and of course, the aroma of fresh coffee will be floating in the air, along with the music. And if you’re not exactly certain which tastes you want to indulge, wander around and check it all out first. The on-site licensed Tea House is also open during the Festival, for those wanting a sit down meal. There is something to tease and please any appetite. Bring yours.

ENTERTAINERS —23

Introduction to entertainers 2011 As a well established juried arts and craft festival, the Filberg Festival also appreciates and respects the craft of the musician and has deliberately developed a stellar music program. The Filberg Festival has a roots music feel to it with a musical line up featuring musicians from all across Canada, as well as a few from further afield. Most of the performers will be presenting shows on both the Main Stage, and on the more intimate Garden Stage. But some performers are only featured on one stage, so you might want to check out your program carefully so you don’t miss your favourite musician. The Filberg Festival has a tradition of presenting some of this country’s finest musicians. We anticipate

this great music line-up is going to attract enthusiastic fans and we ask that festival attendees be kind and courteous as we try and make room for everyone to have a turn at listening to the music. Our aim is to make sure that everyone has a good time. Please remember that admission

to the festival is to the overall event, not any particular musical performance. The Filberg Festival is held to celebrate excellence in arts and crafts and music as well as to raise the funds needed to maintain and restore the very beautiful Filberg Heritage Lodge and Gardens.

Barney Bentall

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings

Clover Point Drifters

In 1988 at the point when a day job seemed imminent, Barney Bentall formed The Legendary Hearts and signed with Columbia/CBS Records. Their self-titled debut album sold over 100,000 copies and featured three hit singles in Canada, winning a Juno in 1989. Between 1988 and 2000 the band toured extensively and released five studio albums which all reached gold or platinum status in Canada. After a change of perspective, 2007 brought the solo release of Gift Horse followed in 2008 by The Inside Passage. Barney has also developed the Grand Cariboo Opry, a generational variety show of some of Canada’s finest musicians.

Originally formed in 1996 when Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson came together to record what was suppose to be a one off tribute album to the great Canadian songwriter Willie P. Bennett they are now into their second decade. With one JUNO award and several JUNO nominations under their belts, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings have evolved into one of the finest roots oriented bands in North America. They have released five CDs and are currently working on an impressive collaboration by the name of Kings & Queens. This release pairs Blackie and the Rodeo Kings with some of the band’s favourite female singers and friends – including Roseanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, Serena Ryder, Lucinda Williams and Cassandra Wilson. blackieandtherodeokings.com

Their repertoire consists primarily of traditional bluegrass songs, with a sprinkling of country, folk, blues and pop melodies served up in the bluegrass style. Clover Point Drifter songs feature close heartfelt duet and trio harmonies, backed by strong banjo, dobro and mandolin accompaniment. The members each have a decades-long love affair with bluegrass music. Featuring Mike Kraft on banjo, harmony vocals; Larry Stevens on resophonic guitar, lead vocals; Dan Parker on mandolin, lead vocals; Alan Law on guitar, lead & harmony vocals; George Robinson on bass, lead vocals.

Duane Steele

Dustin Bentall Outfit

Eric Bibb

He is among Canada’s top country recording artists and songwriters with a professional career dating back to 1984. Duane landed a publishing contract with Warner Chapel in Nashville in 1993. This full time job as a staff songwriter allowed him the privilege of working with and learning from some of the most talented writers from the United States and Canada. Touring over the years, Duane has opened for some of the hottest acts in country music including Shania Twain, Terri Clark, Trisha Yearwood, Sammy Kershaw, and Prairie Oyster. In the spring of 1999 Duane returned to Canada to focus on his recording career and has since released four successful albums. www.duanesteele.com

The narcotic cowboy thing you hear in Dustin’s music comes from his love for Gram Parsons, The Flying Burrito Brothers and the Byrds. The time he has spent in the saddle roping and branding steers on the ranch has also nurtured this rustic troubadour. A two month pleasure cruise across Canada throughout the summer of 2004 inspired all kinds of writing and Dustin went on to record Streets With No Lights in 2005. The release of that record took Dustin back out on the Trans Canada Highway a number of times, as well down to Nashville and overseas to tour Denmark and Ireland. His songwriting talents continue to shine on Six Shooter, released in 2009.

Since a breakout performance at the 1996 London Blues Festival catapulted him to a high level of visibility Eric has toured the world, performing at major festivals. His rich and sensitive vocals and lyrics provide a perfect balance to his fine finger picking technique. He has no problem blending various genres effortlessly, melding a traditional rootsy American style with a subtle, contemporary sensibility. Eric has toured with Robert Cray, opened shows for Ray Charles, and John Mayall has recorded several of his songs. A native New Yorker with deep roots in the American blues and folk tradition Eric has been nominated for nine W. C. Handy Blues Music Awards.

House of Doc

Jake Galbraith

James Keelaghan

Named after their family home, presided over by Grandfather David ‘Doc’ Schroeder. Ph.D., the House of Doc family history dates back to the late 1800s. Infusing musical inspirations such as Gordon Lightfoot, Simon & Garfunkel and Spirit of the West with intricate harmonies, sophisticated counterpoint and a rocking, down home delivery, the band has captured its story with a rich and sensitive attention to detail. Dan Wiebe, sister Rebecca Harder, and her husband Matthew Harder come from a broad musical background and have large instrumental capability, featuring superb vocal harmonies.

As Main Stage MC and host of the Great Canadian Songs panel concert, Jake facilitates the connection between audience and performer, drawing on a life long love of music, and the craft and ritual of musical performance. Jake’s musical career began in the context of the Los Angeles version of the late 1950s folk revival, and since moving to Victoria, B.C. in 1973 Jake has immersed himself in the local music community as a performer, and in various aspects of concert and record production. As a performer who embraces many styles, Jake performs these days as a solo artist, as well as with various ensembles throughout many Vancouver Island communities.

This poet laureate of the folk and roots music world writes with great humanity and honesty, with an eye to the past and a vision of the future. A brilliant tunesmith, James has always had the urge to write. He loves language and history, a subject in which he earned a degree; and he has an ear for memorable melodies and the harmonies that make those melodies glisten. His masterful story telling has, over the course of his nine recordings, been a part of the bedrock of his success, earning James nominations and awards, as well as acclaim from Australia to Scandinavia.

Lester Quitzau

Little Miss Higgins

Lunch At Allen’s

His skill as a guitarist and vocalist have won him growing critical acclaim and admiration over the past twenty years as a solo performer, a member of the award-winning group TriContinental, and with his own Lester Quitzau Trio. A two time JUNO award winner, the master slide guitarist’s music has evolved to be quite diverse, but Lester spent the first ten years of his career playing straight ahead blues. What began with a solid blues apprenticeship in the funky working class bars of Edmonton has grown into an eclectic and constantly evolving musical journey for the guitarist.

Her stage name, Little Miss Higgins, suits the undeniably inflammatory mix of her blues and country music repertoire. She plays music brewed up in old time country blues sprinkled with a little jazz and maybe a hint of folk. As a songwriter, a range of artists from Memphis Minnie, Billy Holiday, and Big Bill Broonzy to Joni Mitchell, Dolly Parton and Bob Dylan has influenced her. Over the past five years, Little Miss Higgins has built a strong national reputation throughout Canada, performing most often as a duo with partner, guitarist Foy Taylor. In the spring of 2011 Little Miss Higgins toured overseas to the UK with her newest release, Across The Plains.

This extraordinary musical revue began as a one-off project a couple of years ago but it has proven so popular that the four veteran songwriters are working on their fourth national tour. Marc Jordan has written hit songs for Rod Stewart, Cher, Natalie Cole, Bette Midler and Diana Ross. Ian Thomas has written hit songs for Santana, America, Manfred Mann, Chicago and Anne Murray. Cindy Church is well known on the festival circuit through her solo work and as a member of the country-folk group Quartette. Murray McLauchlan’s hits have covered Canadian airwaves from coast to coast. Their new CD More Lunch At Allen’s shows off their deep respect for the art of songwriting. www.lunchatallens.ca

Mae Moore

The Marigolds

Michael Kaeshammer

Blessed with an artist’s eye, Mae has been writing for over thirty-five years, and her songs have been heard in major movie soundtracks, hit television shows and all over the radio. Mae has forged a career that has found her sharing stages with Sarah McLachlan, John Hiatt, Marianne Faithfull, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Richard Thompson and other folk/rock luminaries. Her voice is a wonder, a round-toned, burnished instrument, and a vital voice in the fabric that makes up the Canadian roots music scene. Mae has just released a new album Folklore, as well as a companion art book.

Gwen Swick (electric bass), Suzie Vinnick (lead guitar), and Caitlin Hanford (rhythm guitar), three of Canada’s top singer songwriters, have combined their talents to form the Marigolds. Accompanied by drummer Randall Coryell, the Marigolds have a genuine affection for the timeless and classic genres of traditional country and bluegrass, Appalachian ballads and the blues, specializing in angelic harmonies and gutsy playing. Delivering with skill and grace, the Marigolds are a roots music super group in full bloom. The Marigolds have performed at concerts and major festival stages all across Canada.

He has an uncanny ability to take ‘a bit of musical this’ and ‘a touch of musical that’ and create a sound that is uniquely his own. Michael is a gifted singer and songwriter, and a technically brilliant piano player. He’s a showman. His new release Kaeshammer showcases a set of original songs as playful as they are contagious. Literally, a feast for your ears that blends ingredients from his vast store of jazz, soul, pop and R&B influences, served up fresh, piping hot, and with a huge helping of joy on the side. Michael doesn’t play at you. He plays with you.

Paul Gellman A multi instrumentalist and singer songwriter, Paul performs in an eclectic range of styles combining rock, pop, jazz, blues, R&B and folk. He has performed solo and in bands for over thirty years, and brings a warm ambience to the stage. Recently, Paul’s activities have broadened to include different musical forms, including Hebrew and Klezmer. These influences have added to his wide range of musical experience, helping to make his own compositions universal in their appeal. Paul has recently developed a program of collaboration and learning in Toronto that focuses on helping individuals and groups grow their music.

The Rakish Angles

The Russell Jackson Band

What makes the Rakish Angles unique is the collaborative spirit in which they put their pieces together. Each musician composes original instrumental and vocal pieces for the group, and then they all come together to arrange the diverse tunes. They recognize and encourage each other’s different strengths and backgrounds, which is heard both in the compositions and in the way each musician is given space to shine. The quartet members are Boyd Norman on bass, Serena Eades on violin, Dan Richter on guitar and Simon Hocking on mandolin.

Born in Memphis, Russell started playing bass in 1974. While living in Chicago, Russell played with the Otis Clay Band, Buddy Guy, Artic ‘Blues Box’ White, Little Howling Wolfe, Abbe Locke, Bobby Rush, Willie Clayton and Johnny Dollar. After leaving Otis, Russell went on to tour with the BB King Orchestra for six and a half years. Moving to LA, Russell played with Jimmy Witherspoon, Margie Evans, Sam Taylor, Barbara Mason and Roy Gaines. In 1987 Russell moved on to Sacramento, and played with highly acclaimed blues artists such as Luther Tucker, Matt Murphy, Kenny Neal, Lucky Peterson, Katie Webster and Charlie Musselwhite. Finally in 1990, he moved to Vancouver and formed the Russell Jackson Band and has now released three CDs of his own material.

g r e b l i F r u o Y GET THE MOST OUT OF Experience WALK THE GREEN TALK We can all learn some lessons from the Filberg Festival Food Concessions on how to walk the “green” talk. They are great models of what progressive businesses are doing to reduce their environmental footprint and encourage their customers to do the same. Almost all our vendors will be offering only biodegradable cups, napkins, and cutlery. Most condiments are offered in reusable containers - paper plates and plastic forks are disappearing from our grounds. To help achieve a goal of zero waste, they use and encourage recycling. They also use creative serving and presentation: keep your eye out for servings in banana leaves; take-a-way products in biodegradable boxes; or discounts for those who bring their own cups & containers. You’ll also notice our Vendors highlighting the importance of using local natural organic ingredients and supporting local farmers and small business within the Comox Valley and region to help create a sustainable economy. It’s more than just trendy marketing or responding to consumer-led trends. Our Festival Vendors are taking practical steps to demonstrate practices consistent with their values and each individual’s responsibility for reducing our collective environmental impact. We’re very proud to host environmentally conscious businesses and invite you to come and check them out!

Devoted Filberg fans know how to get the most fun and value out of their Festival experience. This is a truly unique event, with a world-wide reputation for the excellence of the work of our juried artisans as well as great music, a wide range of culinary treats and creative activities for kids. So, here are some insider tips to make this a memorable and safe Festival for you and your family. Remember, part of the richness of the Festival is the splendor of the waterfront site. Come prepared to wander the nine-acre grounds of the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park. Wear comfortable flat shoes, watch where you walk to avoid tripping on uneven ground or pebbles and acorns - this is an outdoor event, in a park. Bring your sting kit if you are highly allergic to insect stings; wasp stings are usually the biggest “injury” treated by First Aid during the Festival. (Located by the main entrance gate.) Make sure you dress appropriately for the weather, bring sunscreen and wear a hat. To stay hydrated, drink lots of water. Bring a cup or bottle, free water onsite but no cups! Bonus tip: Wet wipes are fantastic to have on hand. Please leave your pets at home, no matter how special or well-behaved yours may be. This is not a pet-friendly event and dogs are not allowed on the grounds anytime of the year. Be kind to them, do not leave them in your parked car. Leave yourself plenty of time for travel. Carpool and use the park & ride to help reduce your impact on the environment and congestion near the entrance. Bring your wheelchair if you need one. We will offer, to the best of our ability, priority parking for the vehicles of disabled people and those in wheelchairs. Have a strategy to stay connected. Arrange a specific time and place to meet your friends or family when you arrive. Exchange cell phone numbers and have a contingency plan in case you get separated during the Festival. We will maintain a Lost People area beside the First Aid Station located by the Main Admission Gate. Keep an eye on your belongings. Lost and found items should be turned in and retrieved at the Info Booths beside the Lodge or the Pass Gate Tent on your way out. If your purchases are getting heavy, take advantage of our parcel check service at the Pass Gate entrance near the parking lot and the lower info booth.

As you wander, if you see something you like - purchase it, to avoid disappointment. Unique, oneof-a-kind means just that, so if the item is sold, it’s gone. Don’t assume the item or the artisan will be there tomorrow or next year. Our juried artisan lineup changes from year to year and some only come for two days of the four-day Festival. If you do want to get in touch with an artisan from previous years, leave a message in the coordinators notebook at the info booth near the lodge or the pass gate booth and Festival organizers will pass it on. Our Vendors offer a wide variety of culinary treats, so bring your appetite. Some of our artisans also feature handcrafted foods to take home or enjoy on the spot. The on-site Tea House is also open during the Festival, for those wanting a sit-down meal. We invite you to join with us in making the Festival as “green” as possible. To reduce the amount of garbage and landfill use, we encourage environmentally-friendly practices such as bringing you own mug and/or plates and utensils, and recycling your cans and bottles. Bonus Tip: Bring a re-useable tote/bag to carry your treasures, sit on, or to take your garbage home in. Our musical entertainment lineup has some great crowd-drawing events, so during peak times, if space is at a premium, we kindly request that you not sit through two sets of the same performers. That way others will have the opportunity to appreciate them as well. If you like the music you’re hearing, you can purchase your favorites at our CD Sales Booth near the main stage. Due to contractual agreements with the entertainers please refrain from using recording devices during the performances. Watch for spontaneous fun opportunities. Get a henna tattoo; have your face painted; indulge in some creamy organic fudge; or suggest to the kids they try a children’s yoga class in the kids area. And finally, just go with the flow, be flexible and stay curious and open to whatever happens. Part of the festival experience is being part of the crowd. Try not to get too fixated on where you think you have to sit or stand. And if you don’t get front row seats or end up standing in the back, who knows, maybe you’ll enjoy some crowd watching during the event or even do a bit of dancing.

Keeping Things Safe Our event is for families and we do our best to keep you safe. We are helped in that task by our twenty-four hour professional security company Footprints Security, and our volunteer security force made up of retired (or not) police officers, military police officers, and others of similar background and training. So do come and enjoy yourselves with us, and help us keep you safe by doing your part: Make sure you keep track of your loved ones, have a safety plan of your own should you get separated in the crowds. If you see anything that concerns you or that you think may be a security concern, just speak to the first person you see with a communications radio, Security uniform, or Filberg Festival Crew shirt and bring it to our attention. Thanks for being safety conscious and helping us take care of our visitors.

Bike Safe The Comox Valley Cycling Coalition will be operating the Bike Lock up at this year’s Filberg Festival. This activity fits well within their mandate: To create a safe environment for cycling in the Comox Valley and encourage cycling as an effective, economical, healthy and environmentally friendly mode of transportation. Many thanks to these community minded people who are willing to take action to support their words.

29TH FILBERG ENTERTAINERS FESTIVAL— 2011 39

Stacey Earle & Mark Stuart

Steve Dawson

Sue Medley

Since meeting in 1992 and marrying in late 1993, Stacey and Mark have toured the United States, Canada, and Europe repeatedly. Armed with clever acoustic guitar interplay, autobiographical songwriting, lovely harmonies, and humorous storytelling, this couple captivates your attention from the first moment they are on stage. Based out of Tennessee, Stacey and Mark draw from blues, pop, country, rock, and more in their heartfelt music. The years of touring have given them a knack for reaching out to the audience in an intimate “come in to my living room” fashion. Stacey and Mark own their own record label, Gearle Records, and have released eight CDs over the years. www.staceyandmark.com

Over the past decade or so Steve has become such an indelible fixture on the Canadian musical landscape that it’s tempting to take him for granted. Steve is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist. Specializing in slide and fingerstyle guitar, pedal steel, lap steel, banjo and other instruments, he is in demand as a performer, session musician and producer. Because Steve is a master of many genres, he is comfortable in almost any musical setting you could name, and his newest album Nightshade draws from these diverse interests to offer a veritable musical feast for string aficionados.

Returning home to the Comox Valley after years of touring and performing all over the world, Sue is now teaching voice and guitar to young aspiring musicians. After all, she was playing guitar and writing songs by the age of twelve. During her years on the road Sue appeared with many of the greats from Bob Dylan to John Mellencamp. She has also performed at the JUNO Awards, the Bob Dylan Tribute at Madison Square Gardens in New York, Farm Aid in Louisville, Kentucky and at the opening of the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Her song Maybe The Next Time was one of the most played songs on Canadian radio in 1991.

Tim Williams

Todd Butler

Valdy

Tim is a blues based singer songwriter and multiinstrumentalist, a veteran of the roots music scene in North America, roots which stretch back to the coffeehouse scene of his native California in the mid sixties. Tim discovered a passion for the traditional blues styles, inspired by seeing many first generation blues musicians live during the blues boom of the mid and late sixties. His songwriting has won praise from the likes of Tom Russell and Willie Nelson. Living in Canada since 1970, Tim is a studio musician, producer, and a performer in constant demand.

With over thirty years of live performance experience as both a musician/vocalist and a comedian, Todd’s skills are finely tuned. Expressing himself through music is his passion, a twisting journey through such varied musical terrain as funk, R&B, reggae, country swing, blues, bluegrass and thoughtful ballads in the finest singer songwriter tradition. A veteran contributor to CBC Radio and Television, well known for his hilarious political parodies, there are not many comedians who can play guitar like Todd. He will perform at the festival as a member of the Great Canadian Songs panel concert.

Few performers are capable of achieving the kind of energy Valdy generates on stage. He is a master of country, folk, rock and blues, a terrific entertainer, an energetic performer, dancing and prancing, dipping and swaying while singing and strumming on stage. He introduces his songs with genuine warmth and establishes a strong rapport with his audiences. He charms listeners with his rich, smooth, singing voice and skillful guitar playing. Valdy tours in Austria, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States. He will perform at the festival as a member of the Great Canadian Songs panel concert.

Entertainers in attendance 2011 BLUES PANEL CONCERT – Friday Afternoon

GREAT CANADIAN SONGS CONCERT – Monday Afternoon

Host of the Blues Panel concert this year is Tim Williams who will be joined by Eric Bibb, Lester Quitzau and Little Miss Higgins. Each performer is an accomplished musician with their own individual style, but on Friday Afternoon they come together and share their extensive knowledge of the Blues with the audience. Their material might range from original compositions to tunes by Robert Johnson or Elmore James. Each musician takes a turn as lead performer as they showcase the Blues past and present. This year we again dedicate our Blues Panel concert to the Hornby Island Blues Society and all of their volunteers. Offering one of the premier Blues instructional camps in the country, the Hornby Island Blues Society also presents the annual Blues Odyssey concert at the Sid Williams Theatre in May, making the Comox Valley a great place for Blues fans.

Valdy, Todd Butler and Jake Galbraith will be the featured performers at the Great Canadian Songs concert, singing your favourite Canadian songs, written by your favorite Canadian songwriters. Valdy has been a part of the fabric of Canadian folk music for many years. One of Canada’s most influential songwriters, he charms listeners with his rich, smooth, singing voice. Todd Butler is a veteran contributor to CBC Radio and Television, well known for his hilarious political parodies, but there are not many comedians who can play guitar as well as Todd. Jake Galbraith has always loved music. A vocalist and multiinstrumentalist, Jake has immersed himself in the music community as a performer, as well as working in various aspects of concert and record production. Join Valdy, Todd and Jake, singing along with Great Canadian Songs that often rekindle many happy memories and have the ability to touch the soul. Some of these songs are written about the history of our country, and some of these songs are an adventure in beautiful melodies and heartfelt lyrics arranged and sung from the heart. They are all powerful songs that capture the spirit of Canada.

The festival is well known for its comprehensive children’s program dedicated to children’s entertainment and education. Sand Northrup

Traci Skuce

Since 1984, Sand has been warming hearts young and old with her dynamic one-woman circus stage show. She has brought circus arts to literally thousands: at schools across the country, innumerable community centres, festivals, corporate events and special education projects. Sand loves to teach the skills she uses in her own performances: juggling, unicycling, and clowning. She takes her mobile Circus School to schools throughout BC offering interactive circus arts workshops for Kindergarten to Grade Twelve in French or English. Her popularity is due, in part, to her ability to let the children who participate be the stars of the show.

Everyone enjoys the spinning of a good tale. Children become enraptured and captivated. Traci is enchanted by the magic of storytelling, her interest in storytelling born when her first son was small. She loves to transport an audience to “once upon a time” and “a land far, far away”. And transport you, she will. Be prepared to journey to a Persian kingdom, a deep Russian forest or into the hull of a flying ship. You may encounter trickery there, or three impossible tasks. You may even have to outwit the binds of an ancient spell. Traci has studied the nuances and subtleties of story, as well as performance, with Vancouver storyteller Naomi Steinberg.

Our comprehensive children’s program is coordinated by Sandy Holding this year. She already has much experience volunteering in the Kid's Area at the Filberg Festival so we are very pleased to have her. Sandy ran a family daycare business for five years and has worked with children in home education programs. She has also been involved with St John's Ambulance for the past Sandy Holding few years. Her experience organizing and managing resources for various volunteer organizations is a real asset as she plans the many activities that keep children and their families busy at the festival: singing, storytelling, face painting, designing and building with Lego, and creating art work at the arts and crafts tables and the painting easels, with her volunteers. Sandy enjoys a variety of interests including bicycle riding, crafts of all kinds, cooking, gardening and reading. Sandy and her volunteer crew can be found throughout the Kid’s Area helping to make each child's visit to the Filberg Festival special.

nt ri tp oo F l va ti es F e th ng ci u ed R Over the years we have worked diligently to make the Festival as “earth friendly” as possible and to minimize our environmental footprint. We believe most Festival goers care about our impact on the environment and support our efforts to make ke it a “green” event. So how can you help? Here are some suggestions for minimizing our footprint, not only in the park, but in the community as well. Use alternative transportation. Carpooling or park & ride are options for getting to and from the festival in a more environmentally conscious way. Or ride your bike and secure it in our bike lockup. Bring a refillable water bottle as well as reusable plates, mug and cutlery. Don’t leave any garbage behind, take it with you

to recycle at home or dispose of it in our composting and recycling containers. Ask a Volunteer where containers are if you want to recycle and reduce the amount of garbage sent to the regional landfill. All of our efforts can A make a big difference. m We are very mindful of how to reduce our impact and become more environmentally efficient. We rigorously organize the set up and take down of the event to have the minimal impact on the park and wildlife. We clean up all trash to minimize our mark on the property. We’re determined to continue to improve our “green” efforts as caretakers and stewards of the beautiful Filberg park, the magnificent Comox Valley and the marvelous planet we call home.

The Filbergg Heritage Lodge and nine acres of bbeautifully landscaped parklands are situated on the waterfront in the Town of Comox at the corners of Comox Avenue and Filberg Road.
