VALLEY LIVING INTHE GARDEN
Out, Out Darn Deer!! How to deter those doe-eyed diners from your backyard this fall and winter season With fall and winter on our door steps you’re probably thinking you’re out of the woods when it comes to deer damage in your backyard landscapes. Wrong. Actually, fall and winter mark the beginning of the worst seasons for deer damage. Deer will eat just about anything in the winter -- their food supply is very low and they can’t be choosy. They’re hungry enough to eat vegetation that they ordinarily would not choose to eat. The most important thing to understand about fighting deer is that it’s easier to prevent damage than to react to it. So it behooves you to know your enemy and stay at least one step ahead of them. Deer are creatures of habit -- they establish feeding patterns and return to the same spot over and over again, even when that same spot stops offering enough food for them. Even just a few deer can cause significant damage to your landscaping. A single whitetail deer can consume, on average, 8 -12 pounds of foliage a day and in many areas of the country, deer overpopulation is a serious problem. With not much left to eat in the dead of winter, deer can wreak havoc on shrubs, trees and gardens, and destroy new buds and leaves before they have a chance to grow, ruining your prospects for any spring growth.
Here’s a quick list of the tell-tale signs of deer in your backyard: 1. Rub marks on trees where bucks have rubbed their antlers to mark their territory; the tree bark is actually rubbed off. 2. Any kind of torn vegetation is also another telltale sign, deer do not have incisor teeth, and therefore, they “rip” the vegetation when they bite into it. 3. If your damage is found off the ground, up to 6 feet, small animal damage can be ruled out. 4. Deer tracks are also easy to identify. The prints are about 2 to 3 inches long and are shaped like broken hearts.
THE COMOX VALLEY RECORD So what do you do to keep the deer out of your backyard? There are loads of “home remedies” that have been tried with varying results … human hair, soap, pepper spray, even a battery operated radio, creating constant noise and fooling deer to think humans are in the yard! These remedies might work sporadically, but they are not reliable deterrents for deer. Then there’s fencing. Properly built and maintained fencing can be an effective method for preventing deer damage. But, deer can jump up to and clear an 8-foot fence on level ground, and they can easily push and remove plastic netting. Installing a 6- to 8-foot fence can be an effective solution to some extent, but fencing is costly and can be quite unsightly. Perhaps one of the most effective and easiest methods to deter deer are repellents. Deer repellents are designed to impart objectionable odors or tastes. Now available in Canada, Bobbex Deer Repellent is a topical, natural, proven effective foliar spray used to deter and prevent deer, moose, and elk from browsing and causing other damage to ornamental plantings, shrubs, and forest trees. Bobbex is a blend of ingredients that are beneficial and totally innocuous to plant development. The active ingredients are a series of proteins making the product extremely safe for use on the most sensitive plantings. Tested by the Connecticut Department of Forestry against 9 known competitors, Bobbex was found to be 93% effective, second only to a physical barrier. This product works by smell and taste aversion, can be applied in almost any climate or temperature and will not wash off after heavy rain. It dries clear and although

there is a slight odor, it will dissipate within 24 hours of application (to humans but not to deer). And, it will not burn plant material. Repellents should be used in fall months even though plants are no longer at their peak. If applications of repellents are interrupted, deer may lose their conditioning to avoid previously treated plants. Regular spraying trains deer to seek nourishment elsewhere. This fall and winter protect your plants and shrubs and create your own boundaries for foraging deer. Now you’re in control, just spray Bobbex and watch those doggone deer disappear from your backyard landscapes.

DUBAI When we chose Dubai as our first Middle Eastern destination one of the most exciting prospects were the local markets, or Souqs as they are commonly referred to. They can be open air or have more of a mall feel to them, but always have one thing in common, the shopping is incredible! My personal favorites are the Deira Gold Souq and the Deira Spice Souq, which flow into each other and make for a good day of wandering, learning about the worldly products and of course buying. Dubai has a well deserved reputation as the City of Gold. The Gold Souqs are unlike anything we’ve seen in any North American Jewelry Stores. I knew there would be a fair amount of gold, but
when we turned the corner and were looking at city blocks of solid gold we were caught off guard. The Souqs present just about every style, colour and weight of gold imaginable. Another interesting fact we quickly learned while shopping at the Gold Souq is that they sell gold based on the price of gold that day by the ounce, but of course there is always room for a little haggling. The windows of the stalls sparkle with the necklaces, wedding headdresses, and thousands of bracelets. Even if you don’t plan on purchasing anything it is well worth the visit. Where the Gold Souq ends the Spice Souq begins. This is the place to visit for an authentic taste of traditional Dubai. With the beguiling

h t sp ts scent of cinnamon and sandal wood drawing you in, you’ll find the shop keepers standing in the doorways of their stalls calling you in, challenging you to see if you can identify the myriad of spices by sight and scent. The local shop keepers are extremely friendly and freely offer advice on uses for each spice, “dried lemon in stews, good for your man” one fellow said with a smile and a wink. You can get almost anything there from

As we approach Hallowe'en and the dark season ahead it is a great time to read spooky and weird books. This first novel written by Ransome Riggs fits the bill nicely! It could be best described as an adventure in the shadows... Sixteen year old Jacob and his Grandpa Portman have a very special relationship built on the stories Grandpa has told all their life together - bizarre stories of his life during the war years on an enchanted isle off the Welsh coast. This enchantment kept him safe from the monsters that killed all his family remaining in Poland. But now Grandpa Portman seems to be losing his mind - after all these years the monsters are after him again - but this time they are successful. Grandpa Portman's grisly death, his last words, and the letters and photographs Jacob finds in his home propel him to undertake a trip to the small island off the coast of Wales where he finds the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Perhaps his grandfather's stories were not fairy tales, perhaps these children were not just peculiar but dangerous, and perhaps they are still alive! So begins this spine tingling fantasy. Vintage photographs throughout give credence to the "peculiar " nature of the in habitants of Miss Peregrine's Home.

Breast Cancer – A Myth and a Reminder AT SECRET DRAWERS LINGERIE we work with breasts all day long so we are perhaps uniquely positioned to be reminded of breast cancer on a daily basis. We think it’s important to remember those who we’ve lost to this illness, those battling this illness today and help women minimize battles in the future.
GREAT STOCKINGS Make Great Legs!
This fall we’re adding alot more grey, navy and black wine to our stockings. Adding textures, florals or graphics can change up your little black dress from last year. …now all you need are the shoes. underwearmatters.blogspot.com 431 Fifth Street, ❦ Downtown Courtenay ❦ 250-897-7488
UNDERWIRE BRAS AND BREAST CANCER One of the questions we get most often in relation to breast cancer has to do with whether underwire bras really do contribute to the illness. We are pleased to say there is no evidence underwire or tight-fitting bras cause cancer. This myth took hold in 1995 with the book Dressed to Kill written by a husband and wife anthropology team. The authors claimed bras inhibit lymphatic drainage, causing toxins to remain in the breast tissue, causing cancer. As it turns out, almost no part of that idea is true and this statement has widely been debunked in the scientific community. The link between breast cancer and underwires was never scientific and was never published in any journal for peer review. In fact, there is specific evidence to the contrary.
BREAST SELF-EXAMS Now that you can breathe easy knowing your underwear is safe, it’s critical to remember the importance of self- and professional-breast exams. We know many women who have survived this devastating illness because they caught it early thanks to proper screening. But many women don’t do self-breast exams or skip their yearly physical or mammogram. This just isn’t OK. No one wants to lose one more woman to this horrible disease. Please help us make that a reality by doing monthly self-breast exams and seeing your doctor regularly. Breast cancer is treatable, but you can’t treat it if you don’t know it’s there. Drop by Secret Drawers Lingerie any time to get information on how to do a proper selfbreast exam and help us not to have to remember one more lost life.

WEST COAST TIMBER DESIGNS are an option on Any Budget Submitted by: Island Timber Frame www.islandtimberframe.com Timber Framing and decorative timber accents are becoming very popular in contemporary West Coast home designs. The open space achieved from high vaulted ceilings with the comforting feel of exposed wood beams and hand crafted joinery is a combination that cannot be achieved with any other building method. To make timber designs accessible to everyone, designers have developed methods to integrate timbers into almost any home. In new home construction, builders often employ a hybrid of timber and standard framing to achieve the benefits of exposed timber in spaces such as a "great room," where a high vaulted ceilings and exposed Douglas Fir timbers would be most appreciated. This keeps the costs to a minimum as timbers are used where they are most wanted and conventional framing is used everywhere else. Exterior accents such as cosmetic rafter ends, knee braces and gable trusses are an addition that significantly increases the street appeal of your home for relatively little cost. A simple timber entry can create a spectacular focal point that would change the appearance of any home and increase resale value by a good margin. The same methods of timber framing can be used for exterior structures such as gazebos, decks, gates and fences to add a West Coast charm to landscaping. For exterior structures it is recommended that Western Red Cedar is used rather than Douglas Fir as it is naturally preserved against the elements. Timbers can be used in varying degrees, from simple and inexpensive highlights to entire home construction. However timbers are employed in your design, the end result will be a significant increase in resale value and a overall improvement to the appearance of your home.

TRICK,TREAT and Everything Scary. Make your home a fun place to be for a Happy Halloween!
Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb when you’re setting the table for Halloween. It’s all about the fun, tricks and treats. It is not actually scary to set the Halloween table as there is an abundance of festive merchandise available to create a scary, fun look. With a little imagination, you can put together a great table setting… like a black table. Keep the décor sophisticated, yet never minimal. Use the traditional Halloween color pallet so your table will express a more adult ambience rather than a typical kid party table. Start with a plain black table cloth, black dishes and candle holders. Add a Halloween motif runner, orange napkins, candle sticks and of course, lots of pumpkins! Spray paint some branches black and hang some pumpkins from it. You’ll have a masterful Halloween table by picking and choosing a few Halloween items and incorporating them with some items that you already own. To spark conversation, add some fun and playful elements, like motion activated spiders, spider webs, and some dry ice in the punch bowl so it looks like it is smoking. Make your home a fun place to be for a Happy Halloween!

Don’t look at what it is... “SEE IT FOR WHAT IT CAN BE
By: Judith Moore
For Example :
I had a wonderful Interior Designer for a next-door-neighbour when I lived in Toronto who taught me about looking and “seeing. He drummed into my head the title of this column through his eyes, and eventually through my own I was able to “see. Have you been house-hunting or renovating over these last few months? Were you objective about what you saw?. The capacity to see beyond is where you can find the best of everything - a piece of fabric, a sofa that could have a second chance, an auction item, a piece of property, or your future home- look and then “see.
A few look/sees that we now take for granted - drapery fabric for a dress (Thank you Scarlet O’Hara) sheets for drapes - bathtubs for planters, baskets for storage, sewing cabinets for tables, doors for headboards or desk tops, clothes pins for napkin holders, Silver toast racks for ‘filing’ letters , magazines for place-mats (buy current magazines that have the interests of your guests in mind, instant party favour) and of course we can’t forget drinking out of an old fruit jar (Thank you, Elvis).
Judith Moore Interior Design 250-941-0262 www.jmid.ca
Professional OfďŹ ces Residential 3FUBJM t $PNNFSDJBM
FABRIC - Lesley found a huge piece of pumpkin coloured fabric at a local fabric store.
No one wanted this sturdy fabric because of the colour. She purchased it - 30 yards at $1.50 a yard - and went to her sewing machine and produced the most gorgeous slipcovers. $45 worth of fabric - plus her talent and labour - created a stunning and au courant look in her Library
SOFA - Debra found a camel back sofa, at the local Auction, upholstered in the most ghastly colour. She bought it around Christmas so she made Raspberry coloured slipcovers and toss cushions. This fabulous sofa has down-filled seats and cushions and now boasts at least 3 different slipcovers and each one is more stunning than the last.
PROPERTY - a client recently acquired a piece of “semi-waterfront (read - across the street from the water) On the property was a sad little bungalow. She tore down the existing house, built a charming 2 storey home with a porch and large windows. She retained the trees in front - has a gorgeous view of the water - and a beautiful place to live. She was able to “see what the rest of her friends couldn’t.
YOUR FUTURE HOME - Friends in Victoria looked at waterfront warehouse space and it was a disaster. The previous owner used inexperienced and unprofessional trades to create a monstrous calamity. Sagging stairs, uneven walls, exposed electrical and leaking taps more than a challenge. They could “see beyond the mess and created something spectacular out of mayhem. Their end result was recently featured in the Times Colonist.

Indeed, just as falling in love at first sight is never out of season, you can find the home of your dreams, or a buyer interested in your property, no matter what time of year it is. Because life is unpredictable and reality can call us to move on to another phase of life in any season, wonderful houses are placed on the market all year round. Likewise, whether there are 10 or 100 homes for sale in your preferred neighbourhood, it only takes one house to start your heart racing, provided that it has all the characteristics of your dream home. The role of a real estate agent takes on even more importance when you decide to buy or sell a house during a period when the market is not as active. Celeric or Celery Root: The gnarled, knobby brown root may look impenetrable but once the outside is peeled, the tender ivory flesh is delicious either raw or cooked. Celery root tastes similar to common celery but has a more pronounced nutty, earthy flavor and a softer, denser texture. Boil it as you would a potato, then mash; add it to stews or soups; chop or shred it raw and add to salads. Celeriac is an excellent source of potassium. It’s also a good source of vitamins C, B6, phosphorus, magnesium and iron.
SELECTING: Buy firm, medium-size roots, about the size of large turnips that feel heavy for their size and are free of bruising and soft spots. Tangled root ends are acceptable, as are any green stalks growing from the top. Celery root is available from early fall through early spring.
STORING: Trim any greenery and root ends from the celery root and store unwashed in a perforated plastic bag in the vegetable crisper of the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days. It can’t be frozen.
PREPARING: Scrub the celery root with a stiff bristle brush under cold running water. Trim the root further if it appears tough or particularly fibrous and then use a vegetable peeler or sharp knife to peel the brown skin. Submitted by Beyond the Kitchen Door
RECIPE
Potato & Celeriac Purée
GADGET CORNER
In this recipe, celery root is mashed with potatoes, giving the dish a light texture and an interesting, fresh taste that matches well with full-flavored foods such as roast turkey or Cornish hen. Both peeled celery root and potatoes discolor quickly when exposed to air immerse in water to prevent discoloring.
INGREDIENTS 2 1/2 lbs Yukon gold potatoes, peeled & cut into1" chunks 2 lbs celeriac root, peeled and cut into 1" chunks 1 bay leaf Kosher salt, to taste 3/4 cup half-and-half 3 Tbsp butter Freshly ground white pepper, to taste
METHOD: Place potatoes, celeriac and bay leaf in a large saucepan; add water to cover and a large pinch of kosher salt. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. Drain and remove the bay leaf. In a small saucepan heat half-and-half and 2 tablespoons of butter until the butter melts. Pass the vegetables through a ricer into a warmed serving bowl. Stir in half-and-half mixture. Season with the kosher salt and white pepper. Using a spatula, scrape down the sides of the bowl and swirl the top of the purée. Top with remaining butter and serve immediately. POTATO RICER For making a light, fluffy purée of cooked vegetables or mashed potatoes nothing matches a ricer. You can enjoy mashed potatoes that aren't too runny or too chunky by quickly and easily pressing them through the ricer into the perfect consistency. Cooking for a crowd? A ricer helps you make mounds of airy mashed potatoes without the elbow grease required by a potato masher. Not just for potatoes a ricer can press cooked parsnips, turnips, carrots and even apples, on their own or in combination with potatoes with ease. Try using the potato ricer to press moisture from cooked spinach, salted zucchini or cucumber slices. The ricer is also perfect for making baby food.
