More Bang For Your Buck: Routine Maintenance to Protect Your Vehicle Investment and Add Years to Its Life Most people today are interested in saving money. With an economy that hasn’t fully rebounded and economic uncertainty still looming, the search is on for ways to stretch money further. Unfortunately, some motorists think that skimping on routine vehicle maintenance is an easy way to save a few dollars. While this might work in the short term, failure to properly maintain a vehicle will almost certainly come back to haunt you down the road. The experts at AMSOIL INC., the industry leader in synthetic motor oil, urge drivers to protect their vehicle investments by practicing continued maintenance of their cars and trucks for reliable performance and retained value. Many are aware of the old adage, “You have to spend money to make money.” When it comes to vehicle maintenance, drivers should spend money to save money, since failing to maintain a vehicle can cause its resale value to plummet. Routine maintenance such as tire rotation and oil changes can prevent costly repairs to the engine and transmission, among other things. A car is a longterm investment and the better drivers treat their vehicles, the better those vehicles will treat them in return. Don’t skimp on necessities. It’s best to replace a timing belt, spark plugs and tires on schedule, rather than risk inconvenient vehicle breakdowns and the need for costly repairs in the near future. Staying on top of monitoring worn auto parts both big and small will result in less wear and tear, helping the vehicle retain its resale value. Follow guidelines for oil changes. Motor oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle’s engine, and it’s best to adhere to oil change schedules set by either the vehicle or lubricant manufacturer. This will ensure the vehicle is adequately lubricated and running as efficiently as possible. When selecting motor oil consider synthetic lubricants, which greatly enhance a vehicle’s performance. The uniform molecular structure

of synthetic oil helps engines operate more efficiently by reducing friction and wear, while improving performance in extreme temperatures. Premium synthetic motor oils also have the ability to improve fuel economy and are better for the environment because they require fewer changes. When cold weather arrives have antifreeze performance checked. Your mechanic should be happy to check antifreeze levels for free. When a hydrometer shows it can no longer withstand temperatures of 30 degrees or lower, the antifreeze should be replaced. This typically occurs every two years. It’s also a good idea to occasionally turn on the air conditioner in the car during the winter, just to ensure it stays lubricated. Keep tires properly inflated. Fluctuations in temperature can mean fluctuations in the inflation level of tires as well. Tires that are not properly inflated can lead to poor fuel efficiency and premature wear. It’s a good idea to get in the habit of checking the PSI level at least once a month. Use well-tested products. There are shelves and shelves of products at auto parts stores and big box retailers. It pays to do your research into the products professionals recommend. Since the early 1970s, AMSOIL has been an industry leader in synthetic motor oil and garners the testimonials of top auto racers, automotive enthusiasts and regular drivers worldwide. More information is available at www.amsoil.com. Set up a maintenance schedule and document maintenance. Whenever you do routine vehicle maintenance or have significant work done, keep good records. Keeping track of maintenance can be useful to show how well you cared for the car and increase its resale value when it comes that time.

Building on a rich 70-year history of building high-quality, dependable and reliable trucks, Toyota has re-affirmed its commitment to trucks and to meeting the needs of customers in the mid-size truck segment with significant updates to Tacoma for 2012. All at pricing that’s lower than the 2011 model year. “Tacoma has had nameplate recognition in this segment since 1995, and with this series of updates we’ve now made our world-renowned reputation in this category even stronger, ensuring the Tacoma will be foremost in the consumers’ minds for a long time to come when they think about mid-size trucks,” said Warren Orton, Director at Toyota Canada. “While we see competitors

The 2012 Camry debuts a bold, sophisticated new design with a more spacious interior, improved driving dynamics and an even quieter ride than before. The Toyota Camry again offers three powertrain choices, all of which have been enhanced for 2012 to provide better fuel economy and more responsive performance. All 2012 Camry models are equipped with 10 standard airbags. The gas-engine LE, XLE and SE models come equipped exclusively with a six-speed

The new 2012 Yaris is more spacious and has an edgier appearance compared to the 2011 edition. New styling includes a fresh exterior defined with sharper lines and a sleeker profile. Drivers will also find a fresh cabin design highlighted by an enhanced instrument cluster, chrome accents and many upgraded standard features. Plus, there’s increased cargo capacity, more front-row

The 4x4 model includes built in Bluetooth, integrated XM satellite radio, steering wheel mounted audio controls, USB input, sliding rear privacy glass, cruise control, shark-fin antenna and keyless entry. automatic transmission that offers a sequential manual shift mode using the console shifter. Intelligent control adapts shifting strategy in response to driver input, with fast kick-down. The all-new Camry Hybrid debuts its unique Hybrid Synergy Drive system which combines output from the four-cylinder engine with a small hightorque electric motor. The system produces a combined 200 horsepower and varies power between the gas engine and electric motor, or combines both, as needed. The design conveys an “architectural statement” through crisp, precise character lines, while a more strongly curved door cross-section and more defined rocker panel molding give the Camry a more expressive appearance. Headlights show a more dynamic shape, with a pronounced curvature of the mainbeam unit merging into the bumper cover. legroom and rear seat space, 60/40 split folddown rear seats and an array of clever storage systems including new compartments for small objects and personal electronics. The compact, 1.5-litre, four-cylinder engine is powerful, yet efficient, delivering up to 106 horsepower, with improved fuel efficiency and impressive emissions performance. Drivers will also discover that the extended wheelbase and lower overall height boost the vehicle’s agility and handling stability. The 2012 Yaris has a suggested manufacturer’s retail price that’s lower than it was for 2011.

6 Automotive Myths Revealed DID YOU KNOW?

When it comes to cars, many drivers would admit their technical knowledge is lacking. In addition, automotive technology is constantly changing, making it hard to separate car facts from fiction. The following are some of the most common myths and misconceptions about vehicles.

Myth 1:

AWD can provide some added traction going up a snowy hill or coming out of a turn on a rain-slicked surface, but it doesn’t make a vehicle invincible. AWD will do little to help a driver avoid road hazards or grip the pavement in corners. Tires, suspension and driver skill are essential as well.

Myth 4:

Higher octane fuel causes all cars to run better.

Side mirrors are properly adjusted when a driver can see the side of the car in each.

Fuels are rated according to how they prevent detonation in the engine. Higher performance engines generally have higher compression ratios and are more prone to detonation. They require highoctane fuel to prevent this. Other engines have different compression rates and usually require a lower-octane fuel. Unless a driver hears engine pinging or knocking, switching to a higher octane will not improve performance due to the engine design. Drivers can save their money and stick with “regular.”

In fact, they are improperly adjusted if the sides of the car can be viewed. Moving out the mirrors just a bit more reduces the need to look over a shoulder to check for blind spots, which takes a driver’s eyes off the road.

Myth 5:

All-season tires offer more traction in the rainy seasons. Unless a person lives in a locale with considerable snowfall, it’s best to avoid allseason tires. A standard tire has more grip, both wet and dry, than an equivalent allseason tire.

Myth 2:

Idling uses less gas than restarting the engine.

Drivers don’t have to sit idling, wasting gas and contributing to added emissions. Restarting a warm engine does not use more fuel than idling a car.

Myth 3:

All wheel drive (AWD) makes a vehicle invincible in inclement weather.

Myth 6:

Antilock braking systems were designed to create shorter stopping distances.

ABS actually was created to enable a driver to steer out of danger and not spin out while braking. Shorter stopping distances may occur, but they’re a side effect of the system’s design.

Driving a truck requires different tactics than driving a car, including needing more space and time to react than the average passenger vehicle. Trucks also have a wider turning radius. People renting a truck to carry items for various reasons or for a do-it-yourself move should familiarize themselves with the truck before taking to the open road. Adjust all mirrors and the seat for comfort, know where the controls are, including the lights and the windshield wipers, and understand other controls like lift gates or an unlock button for the fuel tank. It is a good idea to practice driving the truck in an empty parking lot to become acclimated to its handling before venturing on roads. Also, plan your route accordingly. Trucks are taller than cars and vans and may not be able to be driven on all roads due to overpasses that are lower than the truck. Also, commercial vehicles generally aren’t allowed on parkways or may not be able to go down certain residential areas. Know the laws before embarking.

COMOX VALLEY RECORD • Wednesday, November 23, 2011

The paint has barely dried on the all-new third-generation Sportage and Kia is already fiddling with the package. The most significant change to the Sportage is what you’ll find under the hood: an all-new 260-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged fourcylinder engine. It delivers feisty performance in such a relatively small vehicle. The base powerplant is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that generates 176 horsepower when hooked up to a six-speed manual transmission (available only in base front-wheeldrive models), or 170 horses with the optional sixspeed automatic. The Sportage uses an all-wheeldrive system that under normal driving conditions directs 100 per cent of the engine’s torque to the front wheels. Once tire slip is detected, the required degree of power is instantly deployed to the rear

wheels. Additionally, a manually selected “Lock Mode” allows for a fixed 50:50 torque split at speeds up to 40 km-h for those times when sustained maximum traction is required. The base Sportage now includes Kia’s UVO in-car hands-free entertainment and communication system along with air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth short-range wireless connectivity and Hill Start Assist (that prevents the vehicle from rolling backward down a hill while in gear). Downhill brake control maintains a fixed forward speed without the driver having to touch the brake pedal, which prevents a runaway situation. The top-line SX features the turbocharged engine, unique body pieces and wheels, and more supportive seats. An upgraded audio system, push-button start or even a cargo cover are all optional, as is a panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled front seats (offered when the leather seat-cover option is specified.)

The all-new Rio sedan and Rio transmission. The engine is available with what Kia 5-Door hatchback bear little calls Idle Stop and Go (ISG). This optional automaticresemblance to their predecessors. transmission-only feature shuts off the engine after The body metal on the Rio and Rio 5-Door hatchback is now much more pleasing, especially the slinkier hatch edition that features its own grille, bumper and, of course, rear deck. The dashboard layout is also attractively shaped, clearly presented and, due to a reduction of hard plastic surfaces, is far richer looking than in past Rios. The air conditioning, rear-window heat and ventilation toggle switches are a particularly nice touch. The new standard 1.6-litre four-cylinder produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque, a gain of 28 horses and 16 pound-feet of torque, which is significant on a 1,100-kilogram vehicle. The lighter (by 13 kilograms) engine is connected to a sixspeed manual, or optional six-speed automatic

It’s hard to be a standout in a vehicle line as attractive as Kia’s, but the Optima’s chiseled European lines are hard to ignore. The sporty driving experience keeps up with head designer Peter Schreyer’s promises. The Optima features powerful four-cylinder engines: a 2.4-litre unit that produces a very healthy 200 horsepower; an optional turbocharged 274-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine; plus a gasoline-electric version of the 2.4 that produces 206 horsepower. The hybrid is the most fuel efficient (5.6 l/100 km city and 4.9 highway) but even the base engine produces a respectable 8.7 l/100 km in the city and 5.7 on the highway. The hybrid system uses neverbefore-employed lithium-polymer batteries that are very lightweight. The Hybrid can travel at speeds up to 100 km-h without the gas engine assisting. Kia’s

Only a year into the Sorento’s new lease on life as an urbanized big wagon, Kia is making some significant changes to broaden its appeal. It remains a stylish, comfortable machine that takes its highway-cruising role seriously, regardless of weather or road status. The 2012 edition, available in front- or all-wheel-drive, also offers a splitfolding third-row-seating option for folks needing to transport up to seven passengers. Buyers can choose between a new base 191-horsepower direct-injection version of the 4 cylinder (replacing the previous 175-horsepower I4) and an optional 276-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. Very closely matched in terms of fuel economy, the new direct-injection engine hits 9.5 l/100 km on the highway. A sixspeed automatic is now the sole transmission

the Rio comes to a complete stop, then instantly fires it up again once the brake pedal is released. The ISG is part of an optional Eco Dynamics Package that includes a special alternator that disengages under high engine load (such as when heading up hill) for reduced power loss and improved fuel economy. Kia claims overall fuel consumption is reduced by about three per cent. That’s only a slight decrease, but every little bit helps and the Rio’s 6.6 l/100 km city and 4.9 highway ratings are a no-contest improvement over its previous numbers. The EX includes air conditioning, plus lots of power-operated and convenience accessories. The SX can also be outfitted with leather-covered seats, keyless start and a navigation system. reputation was built on value, and the Optima is no different and is very well equipped for its class with standard air conditioning, power everything, a cooled glovebox, tilt and telescoping steering wheel and keyless entry. New features include an Infinity audio system with UVO hands-free entertainment and communication system and heated exterior mirrors. Once you move up to mid-range EX or toprange turbo-only SX models, features such as front and rear heated seats, leather upholstery, back-up camera, a premium Infinity sound system and a navigation system are available as options. For buyers with a sporting intent, the SX comes with 18-inch wheels, bigger front brakes, sportier suspension, bright high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights, LED taillights, a rear spoiler, side sills and unique bumper design. Throw in a fiveyear/160,000-kilometre warranty and customers should be beating a path to Courtenay Kia. available, while all-wheel-drive is available with either engine. Standard features include air conditioning, tilt and telescopic steering column and steering-wheel-located audio controls. Along with the automatic transmission, the LX includes a few extra touches, including a new antibacterial and anti-stain seat treatment, while the EX adds dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable driver’s seat, push-button-start ignition, backup warning and 18-inch alloy wheels (17-inchers are standard). The top-dog EX V6 makes rear air conditioning and the third-row seat standard, however that model is the only way you can obtain an extra-cost panoramic sunroof or the overhead DVD entertainment system. Other extras, such as heated front seats, leather seat covers, rear-view backup display, premium sound package and a navigation system are also available.

TIREessential MAINTENANCE to staying safe on the road Maintaining a vehicle is a great way to stay safe on the road while extending the car’s life. Routine maintenance can keep a car running like new for years as long as vehicle owners stay on top of things and stick to a maintenance schedule. Most drivers are aware of when to get their oil changed and other fluids checked, but not all drivers know how to maintain their vehicle’s tires. Proper tire maintenance makes a car safer for drivers and their passengers and can even pad a driver’s pocket with a little extra money. • Routinely check tire pressure. Tire-related crashes are most often caused

Look for abnormal wear and tear. Tires will

by underinflated tires. Underinflation isn’t always caused by a leak. In fact, gradual loss of pressure is natural, particularly when the seasons change and temperatures dip. An underinflated tire makes handling difficult and can even cause structural damage to a vehicle. Drivers should check their vehicle’s tire pressure at least once a month. Those who have long commutes should check their tire pressure more frequently, and it’s always a good idea to check tire pressure before and after a long road trip. Recommended tire pressures are listed in the owner’s manual.

Rotate tires. Most drivers have heard of tire rotation

unbalanced. When taking a car in for routine maintenance, ask the mechanic to see if there are any issues regarding balance. Out of balance tires can cause significant issues that stretch beyond just uneven tread wear. An out of balance tire can wear down the vehicle’s suspension. When driving at highway speeds, drivers might notice a considerable thumping. This is often indicative of an out of balance tire.

Stay balanced. Sometimes tires become

back to overheated tires. A tire can overheat for a number of reasons, including aggressive driving. Frequently driving on coarse surfaces or at high speeds can also increases tire temperatures, as does ambient temperature. Driving at high speeds on a very hot day increases the risk of sudden tire failure, as does driving at high speeds on coarse surfaces. To reduce tire temperature, avoid doing these things simultaneously. If it’s an especially hot day, for example, don’t drive aggressively and maintain lower speeds. • Don’t mix and match. A vehicle’s balance can be affected significantly if owners mix and match their

wear down over time, gradually losing tread. However, drivers should inspect tires for excessive wear and tear, which could be indicative of other issues, including underinflation and alignment problems with steering and suspension. Additional issues to look for include bulges or cracks on the sidewalls or tread and any signs of a punctured tire. but might not know how often tires should be rotated or even why rotation is necessary. The owner’s manual will solve the first problem, identifying how often tires should be rotated (most suggest every 6,000 miles). As for why it’s good to rotate tires, doing so helps achieve even tread and extend the life of the tires. Tires are expensive, and rotation can help drivers get more bang for their buck. Drivers of front-wheel drive vehicles will notice their front tires wear down faster than their rear tires. That’s because the front tires are doing most of the work, bearing the brunt of the force of braking, steering and driving. Rotating tires effectively levels the playing field.

Stay cool. Sudden tire failure can often be traced

tires. Having different tires on the left and right sides is likely to upset a car’s balance. When installing tires, do so in front or rear pairs or even complete sets. Pairs should also be the same size, brand and type, and should have the same tread wear as well. Should one tire go bad, it’s almost always worth it to buy two tires. When buying two, always put the two new tires on the rear wheels, regardless of which type of transmission (rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, etc.) the vehicle has. The rear wheels need maximum traction so the vehicle can remain stable.

Don’t overload a tire. Check tires for their

maximum load range, which will be listed on the tire sidewall. This maximum load should never be exceeded. Doing so will increase tire wear and shorten the tire’s life. Excessive load also increases the risk of sudden tire failure. It’s important to note the maximum passenger and cargo load intended by the vehicle manufacturer is often significantly less than what the vehicle can actually hold. But drivers must adhere to this figure to ensure their vehicles are safe and reduce the risk of sudden tire failure.

THESE BAD DRIVING HABITS could harm your car and cost you money

www.comoxvalleyrecord.com

Did you know? Airbags were invented in the early 1950s by John W. Hetrick, an industrial engineer and member of the U.S. Navy. It wasn’t until roughly 20 years later that airbags began being used in mass-produced autos. Nowadays, airbags have become an instrumental part of a vehicle’s safety system, offering extra protection in crashes. Each year, thousands of lives are saved thanks in part to airbags. However, airbags are not without some measure of danger. It is estimated that airbags deploy at between 100 to 300 mph and in mere milliseconds. The force of the airbag can cause injuries to the face and head. But such injuries pale in comparison to those the airbags protect drivers and passengers against.

Caution: Bad winter ahead! Prepare today with a BCAA Membership! Everyone has their bad habits. Whether it’s relatively harmless habits like biting your fingernails or potentially deadly ones like smoking cigarettes, some habits come in all shapes and sizes. When it comes to cars, drivers’ bad habits abound. Many drivers might have a host of bad habits but not even know it. Unfortunately, bad driving habits are not only detrimental to a vehicle, but they could be costing drivers money as well. The following are some of the more common poor habits that, if corrected, can add years to a vehicle’s life and dollars to a driver’s bank account.

RUNNING ON EMPTY

Fuel costs are still considerable, and many drivers try to squeeze every last drop out of their tanks before returning to the filling station. Unfortunately, this is somewhat of a Pyrrhic victory. While it might feel good to get an extra day’s worth of driving out of a tank of gas, the toll that running on empty takes on the rest of the vehicle is a hefty one indeed. The sediment from gasoline settles at the bottom of the gas tank, and when gas levels run low, the car must use the dirtiest gas it has as fuel. As that happens, the sediment that would otherwise remain at the bottom of the tank instead gets into the car’s fuel line and even its engine. The fuel filter likely won’t catch all of this dirt, and the engine will therefore be taxed unnecessarily just so drivers can go an extra day before filling up. In addition, the fuel filter’s life span will shorten, forcing drivers to replace it sooner than they would need

to if they simply kept more than the bare minimum in their gas tank at all times.

STOPPING AND STARTING

For some drivers, such as those who live in cities, constant stopping and starting is unavoidable. For others, however, this stopping and starting needs to be avoided at all costs. Drivers who enjoy accelerating and then quickly stopping between stoplights might like the adrenaline rush such driving provides, but their engines certainly don’t appreciate it. Nor do their wallets. Frequently flooring the gas pedal is wasting expensive gas and putting a heavy strain on the engine. And all those quick stops is taxing the car’s brakes, greatly reducing their life expectancy. Instead of stopping and starting, smoothly accelerate and anticipate stops. The engine will appreciate it and so will your wallet.

REVVING THE ENGINE

Fans of the film franchise “Fast and the Furious” might love to rev their engines just like their favorite movie stars. But in real life, such a habit is pointless and potentially very harmful to a vehicle. This is especially true when a vehicle has just been started and the engine hasn’t had the chance to warm up. Revving the engine while it’s still cold means the vehicle’s oil is still down in the oil pan and none of the engine’s parts have yet been lubricated. This is certain to damage the engine significantly, and eventually, if revving is part of a driver’s routine, it is going to force an engine replacement, a costly repair if there ever was one. Let the engine wake up and put an end to pointless revving.

DEFINING BLACK ICE Traffic reports often make mention of black ice during the colder weather. It can certainly sound ominous, and it’s often very dangerous. But what exactly is black ice? Black ice is a thin coating of ice that forms on roadways and other surfaces. It often occurs from freezing drizzle, wind-blown snow or freezing condensation. Because black ice is so thin, the ice appears to be the same color of the surface material beneath the ice. Therefore, on asphalt roads, the ice can be nearly invisible and black in color --hence the name. Unlike snow or ice that is readily visible, black ice is very hard to see, which makes it very dangerous for motorists. Drivers should treat wet-looking roads with caution during the cold weather. What may appear to be water is often black ice. Traction is limited on ice, so spinouts and accidents may occur if the driver is not careful.

A dead battery or locking your keys in the car can become potentially dangerous when the weather turns nasty. And with all the talk of a harsh winter on the way, it’s time to think about a BCAA Membership to protect the ones you love. With BCAA’s legendary Road Assist service, you can be certain that help is never far away.

TEST DRIVES a great way to find the right ride An automobile’s ease of visibility is an important factor consumers must consider before buying a new car. Cars are among the most expensive purchases a person will make during a lifetime. That said, drivers want to make sure their next vehicle is the right one for them. While research into vehicle safety and performance history is essential, perhaps nothing gives drivers a better idea of how well a car meets their needs and driving style than a test drive. Many dealers allow men and women to test drive vehicles by themselves, allowing buyers to get the feel of a car without feeling pressured or distracted by salesmen. When test driving a vehicle, it’s always good to comparison shop, test driving different vehicles to get a better idea of what’s available. Drivers who have owned and driven the same vehicle for a number of years can be easily overwhelmed when test driving a new car, which is likely more smooth and boasts more amenities than an older vehicle. That’s why it’s important to test drive a handful of new vehicles. This gives drivers a better point of reference for what a new car offers better than its competitors, and not a one-sided issue of what a new car offers compared to an older vehicle. The following are some of the factors to consider when deciding which car to buy.

VISIBILITY

Many drivers buying a new car after years driving the same vehicle might find it difficult to judge visibility. Familiarity with an old car can make it hard to get used to a new one. When judging visibility, determine if the view of the road is adequate and if the side and rearview mirrors can meet your needs. Sometimes a rear window is too small for drivers used to bigger rear windows, and this can prove a safety risk down the road. Don’t be distracted by the vehicle’s comfort. If the visibility is poor (and visibility varies for each individual), then the car probably isn’t the right fit.

COMFORT

Comfort is important for many reasons. Cars are big investments, and drivers have the right to drive a comfortable vehicle. A comfortable ride can also speak volumes about a vehicle’s engineering. If a car is noticeably uncomfortable, drivers should be suspicious

about the rest of the vehicle. Suspension plays a role in comfort, but suspension might also depend on the type of vehicle. A sports car, for example, might feel each bump in the road, but the superior handling attracts drivers who revel in acceleration. Comfort often depends on the type of vehicle, and buyers who have a specific type in mind should only test drive vehicles within that type. This will give an idea of which one within a certain category is the most comfortable.

BRAKING

Braking can be hard to evaluate, but it should feel smooth and should not feel as if the car is stopping too fast or too slowly. If possible, bring a passenger along and ask if he or she notices anything when the car brakes.

HANDLING

How a vehicle handles will go a long way toward how it avoids emergency situations on the highway. The vehicle should be easy to maneuver on the road. Take note if the vehicle moves too quickly or too slowly with sudden movements. Unless you experience an emergency while test driving a car, it’s impossible to gauge how a vehicle will respond in an emergency. However, publications like Consumer Reports perform road tests that include emergency handling tests. Such information should be considered before buying a car. When test driving a car, it’s best to consider a host factors beyond just cost and a car’s aesthetic appeal.

The long wait for a new Accent ends the front and rear wheels by nearly three inches with the release of the fourth-gener- over the previous model, which is important real estate for maximizing leg and knee room. In terms ation Accent duo. The 2012 edition is available in four-door sedan or hatchback formats and appears to be yet another game-changing model for Hyundai, one that should present a formidable challenge to such pack leaders as the Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta and Mazda2. The sedan’s new body has a similar look to that of the mid-size Sonata and compact Elantra models, especially the deeply sculpted crease extending along the doors and fenders and ending with a hiked-up rear deck. The same is essentially true for the wagon-like hatchback, although its sweeping roofline, curvaceous liftgate and dominating tail lamps make it the more practical Accent and arguably the best looking of the two. Both share the same platform that extends the distance between

What’s hotter looking than a Hyundai Sonata and pulls down better fuel economy? The Hyundai Elantra, of course. Hyundai’s California design studio gets the credit for creating the silhouette that was brought to market for the 2011 Elantra. The stylists were obviously pretty satisfied with their work since they clearly stuck to the same basic pattern, albeit on a somewhat smaller scale. It’s a genuine work of art. From a technical standpoint, the Elantra is a midsized car, even though overall interior volume has decreased ever so slightly when compared to the previous model. In its defence, Hyundai can point to a slightly larger trunk that was already considered voluminous. What has also increased is the output. The Elantra’s 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine puts out 148 horsepower. It is rated at 6.8 l/100 km in the

The 2012 Sonata easily blows away its main competitors: the Honda Accord; Toyota Camry; Nissan Altima; or Chevrolet Malibu. Its bold look is unmistakable, which is a good thing in this class. And unlike all those competitors, the Sonata doesn’t offer a V6. The base engine is a 198-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder (200 horses with the optional dual exhaust), or for more power there’s a 274-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. As well, the all-new Sonata Hybrid operates with a 169-horsepower 2.4-litre fourcylinder connected to a 30-kilowatt (40-horsepower) electric motor for a net output of 209 horsepower. A 270-volt lithium-polymer battery that helps the car reach speeds up to 100 km-h on electric power alone, topping its direct competitors. The vehicle’s 5.5 l/100 km city and 4.6 highway is also at the top

When the new model was launched in 2010, jaws dropped and eyes widened as the styling leap-frogged the competition. Tight proportions, very little overhang beyond the front wheels and slashing longitudinal lines certainly made the Tucson look substantial and anything but “entry level.” Inside, everything fits just right, from the seat bolsters to the shifter and radio controls that immediately fall to hand. For the Tucson’s small size, there’s no shortage of interior room. The rear passenger doors open wide to swallow passengers or larger boxes. For the 2012 model year, Hyundai has made a number of mechanical tweaks designed to maximize every ml of gasoline. Consequently, it’s now rated at 9.4 l/100 km city and 6.2 on the highway, compared with the previous 9.5/6.3 rating. Meanwhile, the base

of stowage, Hyundai claims the hatchback bests all comers with the second-row in place. The Accent’s 1.6-litre engine produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque The base four-door with manual gearbox includes the basics plus a full suite of safety gear. The GL gets you air conditioning, cruise control and the usual powered accessories. The top-level GLS takes its full-load role seriously. Leather seats and navigation system are missing from the factory-installed option list, indicating that Hyundai is keeping the Accent’s trim levels as close to the bone as possible and in line with the competition.

city and a seriously impressive 4.9 l/100 km on the highway with the standard six-speed manual transmission (6.9/4.9 with optional six-speed automatic). New for the 2012 model year is an ActiveECO system for automatic-equipped cars that updates the transmission shift programming and engine fuel mapping for gains in fuel economy. The GL edition adds air conditioning, heated front seats and Bluetooth hands-free communications. The Limited provides a nearly unlimited amount of content, such as leather seats (heated front and rear), power sunroof, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and navigation system. The Elantra wagon, called the Touring, is still around on the older platform with its 138-horsepower 2.0-litre fourcylinder engine. It might pale in comparison to the new sedan, but it costs only a bit more and offers substantial cargo flexibility. of the class. The base 2.4 is connected to a sixspeed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic, while both the turbocharged engine and the Hybrid employ only six-speed automatics. The mid-range GLS bulks up with a power driver’s seat and new-for-2012 heated front and rear seats, The top-end Limited comes with climate control, power sunroof, heated front and rear leather seats, woodgrain interior trim and a premium audio system. A new seven-inch touch-screen navigation system is optional on all models, while much of the Limited’s content can be added to the the base GL trim. The Hybrid arrives loaded right from the get-go, but checking the Premium Package box adds a panoramic sunroof (now standard on the Limited and 2.0T), touch-screen navigation, leather seat covers, backup camera, 17-inch wheels (16s are standard) and a premium sound system. 165-horsepower 2.0-litre engine is rated at 10.1/7.4 with a five-speed manual transmission (or 9.1/6.5 the six-speed automatic). The 2.4 steps in if all-wheel-drive is desired. The AWD comes with a number of off-roader-type functions, including hillstart-assist and downhill-brake control for added stability on steep terrain. The 2012 Tucson runs the gamut, all the way from the inexpensive L at less than $22,000 (including destination charges), to the $36,000 Limited with Navigation model which includes big wheels, navigation, leather seating surfaces, dual sunroofs and a stereo that controls your iPod and shows song selection on its screen. Aside from features, though, one of the most telling signs that you’re in a Limited is the smoother ride and reduced levels of road noise. Of course, you can count on Hyundai’s all-encompassing five-year powertrain, and five-year comprehensive warranties to apply pply to the Tucson. Tucs

There’s no shock-and-awe associated with the latest Civic’s design or content. Instead there’s evidence of a continual effort to improve on the car’s inherent goodness that will more likely be felt than noticed. The rooflines are a bit more sweeping and the front roof pillars are now thinner for improved visibility. The coupe is attached to a stiffer platform that reduces the distance between the front and rear wheels by a couple of centimetres. Despite this, inside, Honda has increased shoulder and leg room for front- and rear-seat passengers and modestly enlarged the trunk space. The tachometer is topped by a speedometer and available five-inch screen that can display key operating and audio selection info. No major alterations were made to the Civic’s base 140-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine.

As buyers shy away from unnecessary waste, vehicles such as the Honda CR-V are coming into their own. The benchmark in these compact sport utility vehicles remains the CR-V. The CR-V remains compact in stature, it’s easy to drive, it’s easy on the wallet at the pumps and, of course, it’s a Honda, which scores plenty of extra points with buyers who covet the brand’s resale stature and reliability rep. The CR-V shares its platform with the upscale Acura RDX small sportute, but where the Acura uses a turbocharged fourcylinder engine, the CR-V sticks to a non-turbo 180-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine matched to a five-speed automatic transmission. The CR-V comes in three flavours for 2011 — LX, EX and EX-L (for leather, with standard four-wheel-

Between the current financial troubles and increasing fuel prices, more of us are demanding smaller cars. For Honda, the Fit is definitely the right car at the right time. The wedge-shaped body looks modern and muscular and the large front glass makes the car appear sleeker while providing excellent forward visibility. As one of the biggest cars in its class - in terms of interior volume - there’s excellent rearpassenger legroom. The interior features smartlooking gauges and control-panel layout, richfeeling seat fabrics and 10 beverage holders. The Fit’s flip-up rear seat bench creates a load floor ideal for toting plants and shrubs while the splitfolding rear seatback folds flat for transporting cargo. A 117-horsepower 1.5-litre four-cylinder connects to a five-speed manual transmission or

With each successive generation, Honda has tweaked and honed its full-size people mover to the point that every aspect of the vehicle functions in perfect harmony. The sharp-looking grille, the neatly tapered rear roof pillar and the more pronounced front fenders make the Odyssey’s wider stance look very well planted. The Odyssey’s 3.5-litre V6 is familiar, but given a number of small improvements it has gained four more horsepower (now 248) and a touch more torque. The engine’s standard variable cylinder management program seamlessly cuts out two or three of the cylinders under light loads and helps contribute to significant fuel-economy gains. LX, EX and EX-L Odysseys equipped with the five-speed automatic transmission are rated at 11.7 city/7.2 highway, while the Touring edition’s six-speed

The sporty Si coupe and sedan receive a more energetic 2.4-litre four-cylinder that generates 201 horsepower (up from 197) and 170 pound-feet of torque, which is 31 more than the 2.0-litre 2011 model. A five-speed manual transmission and optional five-speed automatic are offered in regularstrength Civics, with a six-speed manual gearbox exclusive to the Si. Returning for 2012 is the significantly changed Civic Hybrid sedan with a 1.5litre four-cylinder combined with an electric motor that together make 110 horsepower. The system now employs a lighter and more advanced lithiumion battery, replacing the previous nickel-metalhydride unit. The Hybrid will achieve 4.4 l/100 km rating in city driving and 4.2 on the highway (compared with last year’s 4.7/4.3). Meanwhile, you can bank on 7.2 l/100 km city and 5.0 highway for standard-issue Civics equipped with automatic transmissions. drive) — four-wheel-drive is optional on both LX and EX models. The Honda satellite-Linked Navigation System, available only on range-topping models, can play music right off a memory card that can be inserted into a slot by the radio. As well, all models have provisions to plug in an auxiliary MP3 player such as Apple’s iPod. The standard kit arrives with anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control (to help prevent a skid or spin), 17-inch wheels, air conditioning, a nifty cargo shelf that holds 10 kilograms, and tilt/telescoping steering wheel. The EX adds a power moonroof, steering-wheelmounted audio controls, premium sound system and alloy wheels. The EX-L is noted for its leathertrimmed interior with heated front seats, heated exterior side mirrors and door handles

optional five-speed automatic. Base DX Fits feature a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, four-speaker audio system and power windows, locks and mirrors. Moving up to the LX gets you air conditioning and more/better trim items, while the The Sport edition offers up a new front bumper and grille, black headlight surrounds, and different colours for its 16-inch alloy wheels (instead of 15-inch steel wheels and plastic covers). Other Sport content includes cruise control, paddle shifters (automatictransmission only) and a six-speaker audio system with steering-wheel-mounted buttons. An optional navigation system is no longer bundled with stability and traction control, which have been added to the standard content.

automatic helps increase those numbers to 10.9 city/7.1 highway. The Odyssey drives noticeably flatter and truer than the outgoing version with much reduced body roll in the turns. Interestingly, Odyssey’s engineers shunned electric power steering in favour of a belt-driven hydraulic system, which they say is sharper and reduces general numbness. Base models carry all of the essentials plus a power driver’s seat, keyless entry and cruise control. From that point the sky is the limit, culminating with the $48,600 Touring with its selfleveling headlights, huge (at least in the automotive world) 16.2-inch (41-centimetre) rear-video screen and a 650-watt 12-speaker surround-sound system. For 2012, mid-level EX now gets some content previously reserved for the EX-L, including Bluetooth short-range wireless networking, a USB audio interface, and an eight-inch (20-centimetre) information screen on the dash.
