Build up a Plan for a Smart Renovation By Gillian Birch (NC)—Canadians love to renovate. A recent survey by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation found that 40 percent of households in ten Canadian markets renovated their home in 2008. The same survey found that about three quarters of households used a contractor to do all, or at least some, of their renovations. Everyone has heard a construction/contractor horror story, either through a friend, family member or on a home improvement television program. Whether it is work not performed to code or customer specifications, projects taking longer than expected, or costs going way over budget,
home renovations can be a stressful endeavour. “Spending thousands of dollars on your home is a big decision, so selecting the right contractor is an important step,” said Wayne Ross, insurance
expert at Aviva Canada. “And while stories of renovation headaches are frequent, there are thousands of reputable contractors out there. A little preparation beforehand will certainly ease the stress.” Ross offers these renovation tips to ensure homeowners finish their summer renovation projects with better success:

Is it possible to use eco-friendly materials when renovating? In recent years there has been a green trend in just about every area of our lives, and the construction and renovation industry is no exception. So the answer to this question is “yes”. Many different building materials are now eco-friendly, including products that are made from recycled materials or that have been manufactured with the environment in mind. From insulation and paint to floor coverings, the list of eco-friendly materials now available in stores allows people with a wide range of budgets to renovate while keeping environmental concerns
in mind. Natural or organic paint, widely available, is harmless to the health. It is composed entirely of natural materials that are recyclable. Insulating materials are the key to good energy management in a home. Even if the materials are more expensive at the time of purchase, it is generally true that savings on energy bills will soon cover the extra costs. means taking into consideration three main factors: the plant’s hardiness, the amount of sunlight it requires, and the type of soil it is best suited to. Another explanation for Ironwood Shake’s rise in popularity is its growing reputation as an eco-friendly roofing option. Its heat-reflecting properties have earned it an Energy Star rating and the manufacturer is located in nearby Surrey, which means fewer emissions due to transport. In addition, the roofing materials are recyclable and therefore don’t end up in landfills, and rainwater running off
