“IT’S A NO GRAINER”

Every once in a while, there is a cookbook that changes the way we eat. This is that book!

Barbara Hankey-Rogers has created some of the tastiest and nutritious recipes that will tickle your taste buds, satisfy your cravings, and keep you and your family on the path of healthy eating. Her cookbook is a result of many years of exploring how food can be used as a positive force in our lives instead of something we need to battle with.

After many years of watching her weight go up and down, Barbara discovered that grains and gluten were not her friends. She used to believe that fat was the problem in our diets but quickly came to understand the real evil element was sugar.

“People don’t understand how certain foods are loaded with hidden sugars.” Ms. Rogers explains “It can also be so confusing as gluten free on a package does not always mean grain free BUT if a food is grain free then it is automatically gluten free.”

If you spend even five minutes with Barbara you will want what she has. Boundless energy, a glowing complexion, and a heart of gold. You will find her on the pickleball court 6 days a week, out to charity luncheons and serving on several desert charity boards.

LOCAL MUSIC

The mystic qualities of the desert landscape make it easy to conjure inspiration for artistic works. Monica Morones—local visual artist and the musician behind Cakes—is riding that creative current wherever the inspiration takes her for her new solo art show, Mojave Witch.

Morones’ Mojave Witch art show will take place on January 28 at Flat Black Art Supplies from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., featuring original paintings, photography, vintage items, and more.

There will also be a sound piece from artist IAMNOTADJ between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. IAMNOTADJ is an ongoing performance art project of improvisational soundpieces by multidisciplinary artist, educator, curator, and co-founder of LIFEWORK Gallery Marnie L. Navarro. DJ Nick Chavez will be closing out the night with his musical vibes. There will also be catered treats and eats from local plant based company Savege Foods by Chef Christian Williams. The show is free and open to the public.

“It’s been five years since my last solo show. I wanted to provoke my creativity and break some current boundaries. Mojave Witch is a celebration of living in the desert for over 30 years and making this place my home. What I once saw as ugliness and drought became my oasis and sanctuary. I no longer see just the beige of the desert, I

see a vast array of colors and energy,” shared Morones.

A longtime practitioner of the arts, Morones began painting in 2000, making music in 2002, sewing in 2008, and added photography to her list of creative pursuits in 2010. She works with acrylic paint mostly, but loves to dabble with oil and gouache. The artwork showcased in the Mojave Witch art show displays contemporary explorations of raw feminine power.

“When you have the mind of a creator, it’s a blessing and a curse to want to make art out of everything. With TikTok and Instagram now as platforms for emerging artists, I am blown away by all the creativity I get to see on the daily. I do love going to museums and seeing art on a large scale. We have some great talent here as well like Carlos Ramirez, Aaron Hanson, and Marnie Navarro who inspire me to be a better artist and keep creating,” said Morones.

Morones’ hopes and goals for Mojave Witch center on seeing if she can make her vision come to life through her creations. Her artistic process starts by envisioning the design in her head, and seeing if she can replicate it.

In terms of choosing between music or art, Morones finds it difficult to pick a preference, as she considers herself a temperamental artist, wholly dependent on what’s making her the happiest at the moment.

“It’s all about self expression with both mediums. With music, there’s parts to it. When I write music, it’s to heal my trauma.

When I perform live, it’s living out my rockstar dreams and doing things I normally wouldn’t do in my everyday life as a professional. When I make art, it’s more of a mental challenge that turns into a hyper focused goal, and then release when I can finally move on from that thought and piece. Like I said before, being creative is a blessing and a curse. It’s amazing to be able to create visions, but it’s also very maddening when all you want to do is relax and enjoy the ride,” stated Morones.

LOCAL BUSINESS

For future artistic goals, Morones has set her sights on focusing on the digital aspect of her art. She loves learning new programs on computers and she is determined to practice more digital illustration and animation techniques.

To follow Morones on her artistic journey and for updates on any upcoming shows, visit her social media pages on Instagram and TikTok @cakesthemaniac.

IGGY

“The

That’s Iggy Pop waxing philosophical on “Comments,” a song off his latest album, Every Loser. Unbelievably, Iggy Pop is fucking 75 years old! Take a minute to wrap your head around that fun fact. Of course, the man who has been affectionately known as The Godfather Of Punk, since the late ‘60s, has already used up nine lives and then some. So, technically, this is gravy time.

Born James Newell Osterberg, Jr. in April of 1947, he was the only child of two devoted parents. Growing up in Muskegon, Michigan, he became infatuated early on with primitive Rock & Roll, Blues and R&B. By high school, he was playing drums in bands like The Iguanas and The Prime Movers. (It was during the Iguana era that he earned the nickname Iggy). His affinity for the Blues was so all-consuming that he dropped out of the University Of Michigan and moved to Chicago.

Even as he soaked up those seminal sounds, he was equally inspired by emerging bands like The Sonics, The Doors and local favorites, The MC5. Adopting the name Iggy Pop, he formed Iggy And The Stooges (which was quickly shortened to The Stooges). He was Influenced by the over-the-top showmanship of James Brown and Mick Jagger, but he had an epiphany when he attended a Doors show where Jim Morrison was very obviously tripping on acid. Iggy took it all 10 steps further, becoming the most outre’ frontman in Rock history. The first to stage dive, puke, roll in broken glass and intentionally whip out his, um, second microphone during a performance.

Surprisingly, his antics never overshadowed the band’s protean sound. They quickly earned a reputation as one of the most incendiary live acts on the scene. After inking a deal with Elektra Records, their self-titled debut arrived in 1969. Produced by Velvet Underground visionary John Cale, their music sounded like nothing else on the Pop landscape. Brutal and primordial, it forged a template that served as a blueprint for every Punk album released for the next 50 years.

The Stooges made two more albums, Funhouse and Raw Power. Although they began was acquiring famous fans like David Bowie and Lou Reed, commercial success eluded their grasp. The band imploded in 1973. Iggy stage-dived headfirst into a crippling drug addiction, eventually checking into a mental institution. Although Bowie was dealing with substance issues, he threw Iggy a lifeline when he invited him to join his Station To Station tour.

More lastingly, they both relocated to to the quieter environs of Berlin. Free from media scrutiny, both managed to loosen the grip of addiction. In that time, Bowie created his legendary Teutonic triptych, Low, Heroes and Lodger. He also produced Iggy’s first two solo efforts, The Idiot and Lust For Life, effectively cementing the latter’s position as preeminent Proto-Punk provocateur.

For the remainder of the 20th century, Iggy continued to tour and record, releasing a serious of hit-and-miss albums. He also collaborated with members of The Sex Pistols, Blondie, Guns N’ Roses, Patti Smith guitarist Ivan Kral and Kate Pierson from The B-52’s.

POP “EVERY LOSER” (GOLD TOOTH/ATLANTIC RECORDS)

In 2003, Iggy and The Stooges reunited for two studio albums and several tours. His solo output for the last 20 years has included Beat ‘Em Up, Skull Ring and Preliminaires, Apres’ (the latter two sung in French). In 2016 he collaborated with Josh Homme from Queens Of The Stone Age on Post-Pop Depression. Josh played on and produced the record, not only did Iggy receive the best reviews of his career, the album debuted at #17 on the Billboard charts and it was nominated for a Grammy award. Rather bittersweetly, he lost to his old pal, David Bowie, who had passed away rather suddenly, at the beginning of that same year.

Three years later Iggy released Free and received Lifetime Achievement awards from the Grammies as well as GQ. (Shockingly, although The Stooges were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2010, Iggy has yet to receive the same honor for his prodigious solo career). This new record came about when producer Andrew Watt recruited Ig to play on an upcoming Morrissey album. They hit it off and the producer (who has worked with everyone from Justin Bieber, Eddie Vedder, Ozzy Osbourne and Post Malone) suggested they join forces. The result is his 20th solo album, Every Loser. This record comes fully-loaded. The first opening three tracks alone, are worth the price of admission. “Frenzy,” the first single, kicks things into gear with the unmistakably thrilling sound of a guitar plugging into an amp. A sustained power chord is quickly supplanted by slashing riffs, marauding bass and a pummeling beat. Only Iggy could get away with this priapic preamble; “I got a dick and two balls, that’s more than you all, my mind will be sick if I suffer the pricks, so shut up and love me, cause fun is my buddy, all the sharks in the sea are waiting on me.” Over sludge-y, primordial guitars and synthesized strings, Iggy reveals his enmity for fucking pricks, goddamn dicks and stoned douchebags, punctuating his rant with a neanderthal howl. On the break downstroke rhythm riffs give way to strafing lead guitar and the song powers down with some Hendrix-ian wah-wah.

Next up is “Strung Out Johnny.” alithery guitar fills (that share some musical DNA with the opening notes of The Plimsouls’ “I Want What You Got”), connect with tensile bass, dayglo keys and a caffeinated beat. Iggy’s intonation is suitably sepulchral as he unspools a saga of addiction. But his drug of choice is sex-or love- the two are conflated; “Love becomes compulsive, it’s wiser to say no, God made me a junkie, but Satan told me so….First time you do with a friend, second time you do it in a bed, third time you can’t get enough, and life gets all fucked up.” Flickering guitar licks leapfrog through the mix, by the break, icy keys cocoon spatial guitars before returning to insistent chorus.

By “New Atlantis,” lush piano notes wash over cascading acoustic guitars. Iggy works in some spoken word for the first verse, as he offers up a barbed encomium to the Magic City; “Somewhere south of Alabama and north of Cuba, there lies a beautiful whore of a city, she accepts all donations and an endless stream of lovers, Colombian pushers and murderers, American swindlers and Slavic thugs, because here, a man can be himself, but now, she’s sinking inro the sea.” Toggling between spoken passages and croon-y

verses, corrosive electric guitars roil across sturdy bass lines and a knockabout beat. On the break, soaring, AOR-flavored guitars are braced by plangent piano, fluttery keys and chunky rhythm riffs. The song’s caustic denouement finds him decrying the climate crisis, but ultimately declaring his love; “Some say the world will end in fire, some say ice, Me? I just see fewer birds, fish and butterflies, plenty of concrete/ThoughI run to Europe, I run to the Caribbean, but coming here is the best thing I ever did, Miami, I love you.” It’s a tart ode to “the shitty, shady paradise” he calls home.

A couple of spoken word respites dot the record, “The News For Andy (Interlude)” and “My Animus (Interlude).” Set to a jaunty Music Hall melody, he former is scabrous satire mocking pharmaceutical and the classaction lawsuit commercials that saturate the television airwaves, in between reruns of Matlock and Murder, She Wrote. The latter blends sunny guitar with Ig’s growly declaration; “I am not some flimsy, straytown strawboy, I am a terror, my animus can stand up all on it’s own, to smell out and find the saucer of milk and drink it all.”

Every Loser is simply stacked with superlative tracks, but three songs absolutely crackle with authority. First up is the metallurgic slink of Neo Punk. It’s powered by blitzkrieg guitars, brazen bass lines and a patented “1-2-3-4” jackhammer beat. His deadpan delivery drips with derision as he spits out scathing lyrics like “Got a custom Rolls-Royce, I’m a Neo Punk, got a spot on The Voice, I’m a Neo Punk, old ladies cum when I flash my junk, I’m a hunky Gucci model, Neo Punk, I’m a hunky libertarian Neo Punk” that handily take the piss out of 21st century poseur Punks. Iggy knows it takes more than sporting a purple mohawk and strategic piercings, to achieve authenticity. The arrangement accelerates on the break, as cyclonic guitars and stabby keys mosh atop a slam dance beat. The whole thing collapses in on itself in a sweaty, satisfying heap, accompanied some wicked heh-hehheh laughter from guess who.

Completely shifting gears, the action slows on “Morning Show.” This minor key charmer features shang-a-lang electric riffs, sun-dappled acoustic fills, shivery bass, ticklish piano and a percussive kick. Sly and introspective lyrics find Iggy trapped by society’s misconceptions; “The clown you loved is dead, my insides have turned red. a future that is hopeless just makes each day delicious, time is like a peel, it opens and reveals/I’ll fix my face and go, go and do my morning show, I’ll fix my face and go, time to

do the morning show like a pro.” The wry and reflective mood is underscored by a keening guitar solo and painterly keys.

Finally, on the aforementioned “Comments” search-and-destroy bass lines are matched by shimmery guitars whooshy keys and a thundering backbeat. Lyrics offer a trenchant diatribe aimed at the facile façade created by social media; “Hold my hand and we can take a leap, Earth is dirty, space is full of creeps, sell your stock in Zuckerberg and run, buy a passport to the end of fun.”

“Clicks” and “Likes” can’t take the place of genuine human interaction no matter how we spin it; “Sell your face to Hollywood, they’re payin’ good, payin’ good, sold my face to Hollywood, I’m feelin’ good, lookin’ good… looking at those comments all right, wonder if the comments are right, wonder why I’ll feel so cold, I’ll never make a comment…yeah, I’m lookin’ for a soulmate in those comments.” The arrangement slows down on the bridge, as feathery keys partner with glassy guitars and jittery high-hat action, retreating for more rumbling bass before launching into a hell-for-leather finish.

Other interesting tracks include the squirmy cri de Coeur of “Modern Day Ripoff” and the swagger and strut of “All The Way Down.” The album shudders to a halt with “The Regency.” Spectral backing vocals ebb and flow atop a subdued “Be My Baby” backbeat for the first verse. Suddenly time signatures shift, brawny guitars are bookended by prowling bass lines and a piledriving beat. Iggy spews out a spit-flecked harangue that offers a jaundiced view of celebrity um, culture. Although he declares it a bore and a snore and cheesy, he gives the listener a gimlet-eyed glimpse into a shallow world beyond the V.I.P. ropes; “I saw a nose job, I saw a con job, I saw a heart-throb with a small knob…Satan is hiring, ah, but Satan is tiring, no laughs, no fucking chance, no laughs at all, Fuck The Regency…I battled with The Regency, I fought them to a draw, while I’m alive, uncompromised, I’m stepping out the door.” It’s a fearless finish to a stellar record.

This is a solo record in name only. While Iggy handled all the vocals, several superstar musicians lined up to play with a living legend. That includes Jane’s Addiction guitarist and bassist Dave Navarro and Eric Avery, Blink 182 drummer (and tattoo enthusiast) Travis Barker, Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, former and current Red Hot Chili Peppers, Josh Kinghoffer on bass, guitars, keys, organ, piano and synths, and Chad Smith on drums, ex-Alanis Morrisette bassist Chris Chaney, Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard and the late, great Foo Fighter Taylor Hawkins on drums.

Since David Bowie and Lou Reed have both shaken off this mortal coil, only Iggy is left to carry the torch for outliers and musical miscreants. Rebellious, sinewy and forever shirtless, The Godfather Of Punk recently quit stage-diving. Even so, as he reaches his sunset years, he remains as potent and pugnacious as ever. Every Loser is the first great record of 2023.

BLANC DE BLANCS DELUXE THE VINO VOICE

Isure hope that all of you wine enthusiasts in the crowd didn’t think that we were done with Champagne, sparkling wines & bubbly just because the holidays are over! The super Day of Love and All Valentines Week are just right down the road; and, popping corks is what we expect to hear and feel (“feel” as in exuberance—not as getting hit in the face with a high-flying missile!)

Just yesterday, as I was working in the “chalk caves”, aka—the Champagne aisle in my wine department, I overheard a young lady customer telling her fiance that she just hates Chardonnay. I couldn’t resist and butted-in saying, “Are you part of the ABC clan, the Anything-But-Chardonnay group?”

She smiled and nodded, “Yeah—but I didn’t know that was a real thing!”

“Oh please!” I added, “There are more folks in that group than the entire population of Montana!”

“What I really like though is Champagne!” she reassured me. And then we continued to wax heavy on our favorite bubbly.

I don’t why it took me so long to blurt out, but as the couple were walking away, I said, “By the way, generally speaking, you know that Champagne is half Chardonnay—they blend it with Pinot Noir grapes.”

“You’re kidding me!” she replied as though I had just delivered some unwanted news. But then we all laughed it off. “Who knew”, they both exclaimed!

But lots of ABC haters fail to understand that lots of Chardonnay fill the flutes of their favorite bubbly.

And that brings us to discussing, the specific, Blanc de Blancs Champagnes, sparkling wines & bubblies, which are made entirely of Chardonnay!!—no Pinot Noir in the mix, ever!

Literally translating to “white of whites,” the term traditionally refers to Champagnes made exclusively from white grapes; Chardonnay being the dominant, and most of the time, it’s indeed 100% Chard.

So what do you think we expect from a blanc de blancs in terms of taste? You got it! This bubbly is characterized by white flower aromas and clean & crisp flavors of green apple and citrus, with appealingly acidic notes, subtle minerality, and, in some cases, especially in France, a bready and yeasty backbone developed through fermentation, which gives the sparkler some gravitas.

The blanc de blancs bubblies are zesty, lively, and can be paired with salads, seafood dishes, and desserts like lemon sorbet. Oh, by the way—it is one of the best aperitifs to start a party and to begin a meal. And while you’re at it, keep it around throughout the dining.

And now—some of our favorite blanc de blancs to grab:

Two California blanc de blancs come to mind that are always welcomed & celebrated and never disappoint:

Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs, ($32).

A Napa Valley winery renowned for its sparkling wines (many of which are regularly served at official State dinners, a tradition dating back to the Nixon era), Schramsberg makes an appealing Blanc that drinks like a true Champagne and fits a sophisticated

palate. Lots of tiny bubbles, crisp and dry, with notes of citrus — this makes a perfect pairing for aged cheeses, delicate white fish, and oysters.

Gloria Ferrer Blanc de Blancs NV($23)

Opens up with an enticing orange blossom bouquet, lively bubble trails and light & airy mousse. On the palate, the wine is creamy, clean and refreshing. Flavors of Granny Smith apples, lemongrass, brioche and vanilla crème resolve with lively mineral notes into a wellbalanced finish. A wonderful aperitif. This sparkling wine pairs well with seared scallops, baked halibut, fresh oysters, sushi, and roasted chicken. For cheese, pair alongside a rich Brie or soft goat cheese.

Now when it comes to French Champagne, probably the best deal—the bang for your buck, if you will, is the Henriot’s NV Blanc de Blancs. ($69) This column has recommended this French bubbly often, for Thanksgiving tables to Springtime primavera. It’s the deal and the taste for the entire year!

The winemaker notes are right on: “Sparkling, crystalline pale gold with slight green highlights. Abundant effervescence, with fine, delicate bubbles. Pure, concentrated and expressive, with floral (honeysuckle, orange flower, linden), fruity (lemon, dried apricot, almond) and pastry aromas, followed by spicy notes. The attack is dynamic, full and powerful, with aromas of lightly toasted brioche, quince jelly, and acacia honey. The clean, delicious finish develops on a light menthol note and shows excellent length.

“Lovely as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to dishes such as foie gras terrine, roasted chicken, lobster rolls, smoked salmon or sushi.”

Wine Spectator scores the bubby in the 90s stating, “A finely integrated Champagne, with flavors of ripe apricot and yellow pear fruit enriched by subtle notes of toasted brioche and lemon-infused pastry cream set on a cashmerelike mousse. Reveals hints of oyster shell, spices and white blossoms on the mouthwatering finish.” Cheers!

Rick is your friendly neighborhood wine steward & somm-about-town currently sampling over 100 sparkling wines and Champagnes for an up-coming tasting event in our valley. Stay tuned for details He can be reached at winespectrum@aol.com.

Kathy Weyer wears a lot of hats. She is an author, artist, and advocate for animals and children. It is hard to know where to start to describe this diversified woman. But here we go.

After retiring as a human resources professional in Corporate America, Kathy committed her time to helping others through volunteer efforts, including animal and children’s welfare, literary advocacy with Palm Springs Library and Read San Diego, and business coaching for women entrepreneurs.

Through her work as a grief and bereavement counselor, Kathy has interviewed hospice patients to record their life stories and is a court-appointed special advocate for children in the foster system. She was awarded first prize (twice) by the Palm Springs Writers Guild for fiction and memoir contests and has been published in several magazines. She is on the board of directors for the Friends of the Palm Springs Library and the Palm Springs Writers Guild.

Despite her busy life, she de-stresses by getting creative with paint, fabric, yarn,

paper, and whatever is handy. She lives in Palm Springs with her husband of 42 years and their rescued pets. She is the author of Stitches and the sequels, Canvas and Pages.

The three-part series of books have been very popular with readers. The setting in her books, Heritage Art Park, was created after one of her favorite spots – San Diego Heritage Park located in Old Town San Diego. While visiting the now boarded up spot and relaxing under an old tree, she dreamed up the book series. In her imagination, she saw movement, action, drama, and beautiful gatherings on the lawns surrounding the houses from another age another time.

Kathy suggests beginning with the first book in the series called Stitches. “This is where you will meet the characters who appear in the following two books in the series Canvas and Pages. Stitches is imagined in the Christian House where women gather to solve problems of their own – or people they embrace.”

PET PL ACE TWO ARE BETTER THAN ONE. INTRODUCING A

NEW CAT!

occurs, you may need to separate them, and this may mean one of the earlier steps was not carried out properly.

10. When the cats cease pacing around and sit in the same room together, the humans leave the house for about a 30 minute walk.

11. When you return home, greet your own cat while continuing to ignore the newcomer. If there is nothing worse than hissing going on, the visitor can leave.

12. The final stage of the introduction occurs at the cats’ own pace over the next few days. Continue to ignore the new cat until your first cat accepts him. Encourage activities for the 2 cats to do together, such as putting a couple of cardboard boxes together in a room for them to play on.

Careful planning avoids the horrible hissing and fighting that occurs when some cats meet for the first time. A great introduction method, explained in detail in the book The New Natural Cat by Anitra Frazier, allows you to adopt a second cat without worry. What could be more fun than 2 cats engaged in joyful play, happily pouncing and chasing, twirling like circus ac robats?

Many owners think their “Fluffy” would be jealous or miserable if they adopted another cat. To the contrary, cats who live with another cat friend live longer, healthier and happier lives. If you have an elderly cat, a mature and calm companion works better than an active kitten. If you have an energetic cat, one that is equally playful or a kitten would be a good match. The steps below may take several hours to complete, but are well worth the investment.

1. Have someone outside the household arrive with the newcomer cat in a carrying case. Have torn strips of newspaper in the bottom of the case.

2. Everyone must act completely oblivious to the new cat. The visitor sits in the living

room with the cat inside the carrying case on his lap for about 20 minutes.

3. Next the visitor moves the carrying case to the floor next to his feet. If your cat comes over and sniffs the case and walks away, ignore him, continue chatting and proceed to step 5. If your cat stays away from the case, include step 4.

4. The visitor takes a few of the newspaper strips from the carrier, makes a trip to another room dropping a trail of the strips behind them. This gives your cat a chance to become familiar with the new cat’s scent.

5. The visitor continues to sit and talk. When your cat sits calmly in the room without staring continually at the carrying case, proceed to the next step.

6. Take your cat into the kitchen for a snack, closing the door. The visitor in the living room now opens the carrying case and lets the new cat out. Your cat won’t feel like its family put the newcomer in its territory, and this gives the new one some time to explore.

7. When your cat finishes his snack and returns to the living room, the family stays behind in the kitchen.

8. When the cat returns to the living room, the visitor joins the family in the kitchen. Everyone acts oblivious to the cats who are now roaming free.

9. Do not offer encouragement or interest in the cats. If you must check, have one person enter the living room but without paying obvious attention to the cats. At this stage, hissing is normal. If loud growling

The reward for all this work comes from the strong bond of communication and affection that develops between the two cats. Eventually that bond extends to their human companions. Watch the drama unfold, be proud of your success, and enjoy having two little furballs greet you when you arrive home!

GRADING YOUR 401(K) HADDON LIBBY

U.S. stocks were down by nearly 20% in 2022. This comes on the heels of a 25% increase in 2021 along with a 20% increase during a tumultuous 2020.

When looking at your year-end statements, see if you can diagnose what did better and what did worse. To do this, you will need a benchmark to compare your performance against.

For your reference, I own and operate a State-Registered Investment Advisory firm. RIAs must put their clients first in everything that we do, or we can get in serious trouble. For comparison, brokers by definition are middlemen who are allowed to put compensation for themselves and their firm ahead of your best interests. If they do this in egregious ways, they can get in trouble although I have seen some get away with things that you or I would consider shameful.

If you can find an RIA firm that performs to the Fiduciary Standard of Care, well you have found the unicorn of investment advisors. These folks must put your interest first in everything that they do, or they get in trouble. As a shameless plug, I operate to this standard of care.

Soft pitch aside, let’s review how you have done with your investments.

Given the returns seen in the market in 2020 and 2021, general shortage of workers and low cost to borrow money, is it any wonder that inflation took off? Add to that higher energy costs thanks to the Russian invasion and supply shortages caused by zero COVID policies in China and you can see why the Federal Reserve has been so intent on beating back inflation now. As older readers

know from experience, inflation erodes the ability to buy things whether it be food, fuel or a McDonald’s Value Meal.

Are you an aggressive investor who invests in Growth stocks like Tech? A younger investor would typically be the most aggressive as they have the longest time to recover from nasty selloffs. Growth stocks which were up 44% in 2020 and 25% in 2021 fell the most – down 37%.

Let’s say that you are not that aggressive. You keep your money invested in stocks but a healthy mix that would be described as a mix of growth stocks and value stocks. Where technology is typically a growthier industry,

banks, oil companies and utilities are typically value-oriented. Growth is slower but you get a dividend while you wait. As mentioned earlier, this approach was up 20-25% in the two years before the 20% drop in 2022. Over the last five years, you should have been up by about 8.5%.

Let’s say that you are more cautious and keep half of your money in stocks and half in bonds. This more conservative approach resulted in returns of 13.7% in 2020, 13% in 2021, and a 15% decline in 2022. This approach should have resulted in about a 5% return over the last five years. Those who used bond funds were unfortunate enough

to experience the worst decline in valuations in history. Those holding the individual bonds were left with returns far behind inflation.

While the stock market may very well go down while the Federal Reserve hikes rates and money is sucked out of the economy to beat back inflation, a long-term investor who has decades until retirement should view this market as one where they can be more aggressive and buy stocks at a discount.

Older investors do not have this same luxury of time. The good news is fixed income investments pay the best returns in 20 years. Money markets pay 4% while US Treasury bills yield as much as 4.7% for one year. The trick here is to keep maturities short as rates paid go down as you more toward longer term issuances.

Hope this helps! By the way, this is not investment advice. If you want investment advice, you can reach me via www. WinslowDrake.com

IFOUGHT

THE LAW AND THE LAW WON!

This is more than a Bobby Fuller Four song from the 60’s. The law arguably wins every time. This is because whether you are found guilty or not guilty, you still lose. A defendant loses time and money from 1. being arrested; 2. going to court multiple times; 3. Posting Bail; 4. Retaining a lawyer; 5. Loss of earnings and 6. Dealing with the stress it places on your life.

Thus, there is no way you can truly win, when you are prosecuted FOR A CRIME, or when you have been in a PI accident and bring a case against the party at fault. Because of the stress you are under, with a criminal case or PI case, the defendant often takes it out on their significant other/s. This leads to subsequent domestic violence arrests as well as divorces and disharmony with the family……not to mention the interruption of business and the financial losses incurred therein.

The info above is equally applicable to Felonies, Misdemeanors, and Infractions. With all of these, the defendant is being prosecuted by the DA and once the DA decides to file they don’t usually give in. As a matter of fact, in the Indio Court, over the years there are a lot of young DA’s that are looking for notches on their belt, which they acquire by going to trial and winning cases.

Many of these cases should never have been filed and even though defendants are not guilty some decide to enter a plea rather than being subjected to the challenges listed herein.

A defendant loses a case for many reasons. Usually, it is because the facts are against them. Sometimes it is because they cannot afford the best lawyer or the experts necessary to prevail. Often a defendant is just unlikeable either because of his/her appearance such as tattoos.

Other factors I warn my DUI and PI clients about, when going to court, are:

1. When you are within a few miles of the courthouse, you need to become the most courteous driver on the road. You do not know if the driver you cut off or flipped off will be your judge, clerk or juror. You may not recognize that driver but they will remember you.

2. Park your car between the lines, do not take 2 spaces.

3. Do NOT Smoke or spit.

4. Do not walk on the grass if there is a sign not to do so.

5. Hold the elevator door open for whoever is behind you.

6. Be courteous to everyone in the courthouse.

7. Dress professionally and cover tattoos

the hallway to see what convinced them of my client’s innocence. The answers totally surprised me. They commented that the DA was rude, had an old belt, dirty nails, clothes that needed pressing etc. All in all, he was not well groomed.

All of this leads to Criminal Defendants and PI Accident Victims, agreeing that the law wins every time and it is often not worth fighting “the law”...BUT YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT WILL SWAY A JUROR.

night before. Every juror and judge is different and looks for different things. As a young lawyer, I tried a case against one of the most senior DA’s. I had to try the case because my client was charged with 5 counts and had a long record, in addition to being on parole. If he pled, he would go away for a long time. There was no chance of winning but the jury came back 12-0 not guilty on all counts. He was found not guilty… however, he was far from innocent. I just got lucky and so did my client.

TIAR’A LITERARY & ILLUSTRATION MEETS THE MUSIC BAND “R•SOUND”

Music has been part of human existence since before time was recorded. As the Holy Bible clearly expresses – music existed in the heavens. Sadly, music was corrupted in heaven. For those who have spent time reading the Holy Bible, Satan was at one time the chief musician in the heavenly realm until the Lord cast him out.

There is no question that some musical performers and artists that we hear today are not promoting their absolute best, and again - sadly, there are scads of music circulating in mainstream media that promotes everything but wholesome, valued, and an uplifting “accompaniment” to our existence. We choose to employ the word “accompaniment” in the prior sentence for one significant reason. Typically, or perhaps as expected, most would have chosen to say, uplifting “entertainment”. Entertainment is word that has existed for thousands of years and has unfortunately garnered a less-than-inspiring reputation. Many moons ago, entertainment was a reserved expression used by kings, queens, princes, dukes, princesses, and all other member of royal or high society. They used the word entertainment when discussing court jesters. Yes, the original big bands, actors also known as thespians, comedians, gladiators, and other forms of entertainers were bunched up in the category of the infamous court jester.

In today’s economy it may appear that court jesters have risen above their superior royal aristocratic puppeteers.

As we are aware, government, educational establishments, big tech, pharmaceutical tech, and media dominate our global landscape. Today, these are the kings, queens, prince, dukes, and princesses. What’s more, these modern royals do not, as you may think, partake in such activities as listening to a live musical performance, or attending a screening at a movie theater. Quite the contrary. These modern monarchs invest their time in brainstorming, planning, devising, running,

SAFETYTIPS

albeit “ruling” the platforms which they oversee. The modern court jesters have been handed over to the masses for consumption to keep them occupied while the royals do their evil bidding behind closed doors.

Considering the above you may interpret that we might be mocking the modern court jester – on the contrary. A court jester in today’s economy possesses a power that even they are not aware they have. This is because, while those monarchs and patriarchs who choose to corrupt and destroy aren’t paying attention, court jesters can be influencing the masses toward a greater and more blessed tomorrow. How many of them choose to do so? Very few.

The Coachella Valley’s music landscape has been heavily fortified for almost a century. After all, Palm Springs is synonymous with the often delinquent “Rat Pack” featuring frequent jail house rocker, Frank Sinatra. Why, good ol’ Frank’s name has been forever billboarded as one of our main thoroughfares. But as far as musicians are concerned, one group are beginning to rise on the proverbial Coachella Valley’s music radar, and perhaps far above any of their predecessors.

R•SOUND is a modern-day success story in the making. This group of musical living legends are the epitome of what it means to utilize a public platform for the greater good.

We were blessed to be introduced to the sound that will soon be defining the Coachella Valley earlier this year by “Bebe”. Bebe, as he is known to his bandmates, and to many within the valley, offered us a first-person account recital from the band – and we were pleasantly inspired.

Bebe, who donates his time as R•Sound’s percussionist, believes the band will usher in a new yet familiar sound that will add to the valley’s ever-increasing portfolio of artistry. “It’s all by the grace of the good Lord”, Bebe tells us.

R•Sound is composed of a group of mature gentlemen offering their musical talents to a

myriad of events. These range from weddings, fiestas, birthdays, quinceneras, fundraisers, charities, and other events. No, this is not Adam Sandler’s, The Wedding Singer. R•Sound truly holds a musical pedigree accompanied by a devout dedication to all things pure, uplifting, and positive that is unparalleled. Elvis would be envious.

R•Sound might not have been possible had it not been for a decision made by its front man, Mario Lara, decades ago. As a young man, Mario’s world of music was an oyster filled with caviar. Yet, the young Mario foresaw stormy waters ahead. Unlike many of his brethren, who dove into its murky shark infested waters of the music industry, Mario opted not to ride the wave of the raging storm and pursue the career that was being offered. Instead, he cultivated his marriage, raised a family, and ran his own landscaping business.

THE OTHER SMELLY SIDE OF GAS!

RISING NATURAL GAS PRICES RISE ANOTHER DANGEROUS

Natural gas prices have been rising faster than electricity prices in California, which may influence people to switch from one source of energy to another.

Inflation is hitting everyone’s pocketbook. It’s not just the pocketbook that is concerning, it’s the dangers associated with inflation that are often overlooked.

It’s been unusually cold. We are seeing an uptick of structure fires as people will are using fireplaces more, along with portable electric space heaters and electric blankets in combination with extension cords. Not to mention those that will use other sources to heat their homes: Ovens, propane, kerosene and even barbeques.

If you have a wood burning fireplace, make sure you get your chimney cleaned every year, and use a strong screen to keep sparks from catching onto anything that can

start a fire.

Never use your stove to heat your home. It’s not an effective way to heat. That’s not what it’s designed for. Keeping your stove

Several years ago, and upon retiring from running his business full-time, Mario decided to form R•Sound, share his love of music, and give back to the Coachella Valley. Since then, the band have made numerous impressions at private and public events performing many classic top hits, albeit, with their unique sound.

If you would like to schedule a performance by R•Sound, contact the number below. You will be entertained with poise, class, and positivity.

on for an extended period; keeping the oven open, allows just another opportunity for something to enter that space and ignite or a child to burn themselves.

Gas stoves can also increase the risk of carbon monoxide, which is a deadly and odorless gas. A working carbon monoxide and smoke detector is important to ensure there are no unsafe gases in our home.

To keep gas bill lower, practice the following options:

Dial down the thermostat to 68 degrees or lower

Wash clothes in cold water

Take shorter hot showers

Warm your home with natural sunlight during the day

Bundle up with warm blankets, socks, and sweaters

To help prevent home fires or accidents from occurring, there are some things we

can do. All open heat sources and furnaces should be free of flammable materials within a five-foot or larger area.

Children should also be told to stay away from sources of heat as they are likely to touch them out of curiosity.

It’s also important to not leave things like portable space heaters and fireplaces unattended while active so that you can react if there is ever an issue.

Again, test smoke detectors every month to ensure that they work correctly.

SENDMEATRAINER

UNDERSTANDING THE BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH A PERSONAL TRAINER

Whether you’ve fallen into a workout rut or you’re totally new to exercise, it’s hard to know where to begin — or how to navigate all the machines and equipment.

The gym can be pretty daunting, especially if you’re a total beginner.

If there’s no one to hold us accountable, we lose sight of our set goals. Shared accountability is a big step forward in a ‘realistic’ direction. Ongoing sessions with a personal trainer give you the motivation, tracking, guidance, and accountability you need to achieve better results.

The beauty of having a personal trainer is that they take all the guesswork out of the equation, which means your only job is to show up for yourself. Beyond that, you gain peace of mind that you’re not wasting your time with ineffective exercises, or, worse, putting yourself at the risk of injury.

It’s important to say that the benefits of a PT aren’t all physical. Their support, encouragement and can-do attitude will boost motivation. They also really help to keep our minds in the right place.

Through my years of being a Personal Trainer I see the most important reason for working with a Personal trainer which is it reduces the Risk of Injury

It’s going to be hard to stick with a workout routine if you’re hurt. Because a personal trainer is experienced with the moves and equipment in common workout programs, working with one cuts your risk dramatically.

Your trainer can teach the proper form, technique, and posture required for each exercise you do. They will also supervise you during a workout and correct these things as you go.

People don’t become personal trainers simply because they’re healthy themselves. For the most part, successful personal trainers are the type of people to enjoy the company of others, are empathetic, and want to help. The position of a personal trainer is a unique place to be, held only by those who’re genuinely understanding and caring in nature.

While that might not be the case for every personal trainer, it’s certainly the case for all “Send Me A Trainer” personal trainers who have been in the business for any considerable length of time. You don’t last

long if your clients are uneasy around you, sensing disinterest or contempt. A lot depends on word of mouth, the best personal trainers often find work through being recommended by colleagues, friends, and family.

A certified personal trainer can customize a fitness program for your ability, fitness level, and goals. A common misconception about personal trainers is that they get in your face and shout at you, belittle you, or push you too hard. However, qualified personal trainers care about their clients and want them to succeed. Consider getting professional help with your fitness program, because there are many benefits of having a personal trainer.

Some of them listed below:

Safety first

Achieve your goals faster

Increased accountability

Create a lifetime of wellness

Personalized attention

A mental & emotional boost

To get the most from each of your personal training sessions, you should take the time to find the right trainer. You want someone you have a rapport with and someone you can trust to help you get where you want to be.

FREEWILLASTROLOGY

WEEK OF JANUARY 19

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Noah Webster ((1758–1843) worked for years to create the first definitive American dictionary. It became a cornucopia of revelation for poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886). She said that for many years it was her «only companion.» One biographer wrote, «The dictionary was no mere reference book to her; she read it as a priest his breviary—over and over, page by page, with utter absorption.» Now would be a favorable time for you to get intimate with a comparable mother lode, Aries. I would love to see you find or identify a resource that will continually inspire you for the rest of 2023.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): «The aspects of things that are most important for us are hidden because of their simplicity and familiarity.» So declared Taurus philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein in his book Philosophical Investigations. Luckily for you Tauruses, you have a natural knack for making sure that important things don’t get buried or neglected, no matter how simple and familiar they are. And you’ll be exceptionally skilled at this superpower during the next four weeks. I hope you will be gracious as you wield it to enhance the lives of everyone you care about. All of us nonBulls will benefit from the nudges you offer as we make our course corrections.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Poet Carolyn Kizer said the main subject of her work was this: “You cannot meet someone for a moment, or even cast eyes on someone in the street, without changing.” I agree with her. The people we encounter and the influences they exert make it hard to stay fixed in our attitudes and behavior. And the people we know well have even more profound transformative effects. I encourage you to celebrate this truth in the coming weeks. Thrive on it. Be extra hungry for and appreciative of all the prods you get to transcend who you used to be and become who you need to be.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): If you have any interest in temporarily impersonating a Scorpio, the coming weeks will be a favorable time to play around. Encounters with good, spooky magic will be available. More easily than usual, you could enjoy altered states that tickle your soul with provocative insights. Are you curious about the mysteries of intense, almost obsessive passion? Have you wondered if there might be ways to deal creatively and constructively with your personal darkness? All these perks could be yours—and more. Here’s another exotic pleasure you may want to explore: that half-forbidden zone where dazzling heights overlap with the churning depths. You are hereby invited to tap into the erotic pleasures of spiritual experiments and the spiritual pleasures of erotic experiments.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): The circle can and will be complete—if you’re willing to let it find its own way of completing itself. But I’m a bit worried that an outdated part of you may cling to the hope of a perfection that’s neither desirable nor possible. To that outdated part of you, I say this: Trust that the Future You will thrive on the seeming imperfections that arise. Trust that the imperfections will be like the lead that the Future You will alchemically transmute into gold. The completed circle can’t be and shouldn’t be immaculate and flawless.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Shakespeare’s work has been translated from his native English into many languages. But the books of Virgo detective novelist Agatha Christie have been translated far more than the Bard’s. (More info: tinyurl.com/ ChristieTranslations.) Let’s make Christie your inspirational role model for the next four weeks. In my astrological estimation, you will have an extraordinary capacity to communicate with a wide variety of people. Your ability to serve as a mediator and go-between and translator will be at a peak. Use your superpower wisely and with glee!

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Libran musician Franz Liszt (1811–1886) was a prolific and influential genius who created and played music with deep feeling. He was also physically attractive and charismatic. When he performed, some people in

the audience swooned and sighed loudly as they threw their clothes and jewelry on stage. But there was another side of Liszt. He was a generous and attentive teacher for hundreds of piano students, and always offered his lessons free of charge. He also served as a mentor and benefactor for many renowned composers, including Wagner, Chopin, and Berlioz. I propose we make Liszt your inspirational role model for the next 11 months. May he rouse you to express yourself with flair and excellence, even as you shower your blessings on worthy recipients.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): This may risk being controversial, but in the coming weeks, I’m giving you cosmic authorization to engage in what might appear to be cultural appropriation. Blame it on the planets! They are telling me that to expand your mind and heart in just the right ways, you should seek inspiration and teaching from an array of cultures and traditions. So I encourage you to listen to West African music and read Chinese poetry in translation and gaze at the art of Indigenous Australians. Sing Kabbalistic songs and say Lakota prayers and intone Buddhist chants. These are just suggestions. I will leave it to your imagination as you absorb a host of fascinating influences that amaze and delight and educate you.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “All the world’s a stage,” Shakespeare wrote, “and all the men and women merely players.” That’s always true, but it will be even more intensely accurate for you in the coming weeks. High-level pretending and performing will be happening. The plot twists may revolve around clandestine machinations and secret agendas. It will be vital for you to listen for what people are NOT saying as well as the hidden and symbolic meanings behind what they are saying. But beyond all those cautionary reminders, I predict the stories you witness and are part of will often be interesting and fun.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In this horoscope, I offer you wisdom from Capricorn storyteller Michael Meade. It’s a rousing meditation for you in the coming months. Here’s Meade: “The genius inside a person wants activity. It’s connected to the stars; it wants to burn and it wants to create and it has gifts to give. That is the nature of inner genius.” For your homework, Capricorn, write a page of ideas about what your genius consists of. Throughout 2023, I believe you will express your unique talents and blessings and gifts more than you ever have before.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis (1883–1957) was nominated nine times for the prestigious Nobel Prize in Literature, but never won. He almost broke through in the last year of his life, but French author Albert Camus beat him by one vote. Camus said Kazantzakis was “a hundred times more” deserving of the award than himself. I will make a wild prediction about you in the coming months, Aquarius. If there has been anything about your destiny that resembles Kazantzakis’s, chances are good that it will finally shift. Are you ready to embrace the gratification and responsibility of prime appreciation?

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Piscean educator Parker Palmer has a crucial message for you to meditate on in the coming weeks. Read it tenderly, please. Make it your homing signal. He said, “Solitude does not necessarily mean living apart from others; rather, it means never living apart from one’s self. It is not about the absence of other people—it is about being fully present to ourselves, whether or not we are with others. Community does not necessarily mean living faceto-face with others; rather, it means never losing the awareness that we are connected to each other.”

CANNABINOL THE DARLING OF THE PHYTOCANNABINOIDS

ementia is defined as a group of progressive disorders that prevent individuals from independently brushing their teeth, taking a shower, or remembering their spouse’s name. Alzheimer’s (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia. An estimated 6.5 million Americans aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in 2022. Seventy-three percent are age 75 or older. About 1 in 9 aged 65 and older (10.7%) has Alzheimer’s.

AD is the sixth leading cause of death more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. Unfortunately, the Alzheimer’s Association and other Internet medical sites are unfamiliar with the latest research on cannabis treatment for AD and neurological diseases. Their reliance on pharmaceuticals with accompanying toxic side effects is not keeping pace with the public’s use of natural herbs. There is no cure for AD

Researchers found that the brain cells of those with AD have abnormal protein deposits called amyloid-beta plaques and tau neurofibrillary tangles. These plaques and tangles disrupt the brain cell function and cause apoptosis or cell death. Neuroinflammation is also a big part of AD and other neurodegenerative diseases.

Pharmaceutical Research

There are four approved drugs available, for treating dementia. Three are acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (rivistagmine, donepezil, and galantamine) and one is a N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist (memantine). The Food and Drug Administration granted conditional approval in June 2022 for a fourth drug, Aducanumab.

This is the first drug to address the underlying biology of the disease. According to the FDA, Aducanumab reduces beta-amyloid plaques, which reasonably leads to a reduction in clinical decline due to AD disease. However, these drugs that directly target amyloid, or tau proteins, that damage cells, have not yielded significant clinical benefits for patients.

Cannabinoids to Treat Dementia

Research on medical cannabis has focused mainly on the major phytocannabinoids, delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Cannabinoids are known as potent anti-inflammatory compounds. CBD and THC both reduce the formation of amyloid-beta protein (G. Watt et al). However, relatively little scientific knowledge has yet been made for the minor phytocannabinoids.

Salk Institute Studies

There are many chemical pathways that lead to cell death. Research by Pamela Maher’s

team, at the Salk Institute in La Jolla CA, looked at the process of oxytosis/ferroptosis. Her research was published on January 6, 2023, in Free Radical Biology and Medicine. Oxytosis is regulated cell death induced by an antioxidant depletion molecule called, glutathione (GSH). Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent nonapoptotic form of regulated cell death induced by potential anti-cancer drugs. There is growing evidence that oxytosis may cause AD.

Maher’s team treated nerve cells with cannabinol (CBN) and then introduced an agent to stimulate oxidative damage. They found that CBN worked by protecting mitochondria, the cell’s powerhouses, within the neurons. In damaged cells, oxidation causes the mitochondria to curl up like donuts. Treating the cells with CBN prevented the mitochondria from curling up.

To confirm the interaction between CBN and mitochondria, researchers then replicated

the experiment in nerve cells that had the mitochondria removed. In these cells, CBN no longer demonstrated its protective effect. CBN is molecularly similar to THC without the psychoactive effects. THC works directly with the CB1 receptors. But CBD and CBN do not affect cell function through the CB2 receptors. Instead, they modulate the effects of cells.

Transitioning Science into Practice

Healing Essence and Synergy Wellness, produces small batches of cannabinoid isolates (CBD+ CBN) derived from natural cannabis flower, in organic sesame oil. Sesame oil is a long-chain triglyceride, that encapsulates the cannabinoids and creates a liposomal effect. This liposomal effect provides better bioavailability of cannabinoids.

The capsules enriched with CBN improve nerve health, organ function, and mood regulation. These capsules can be used for chronic conditions as well, taken every 4-6 hours, to maintain a constant dose of CBD and CBN cannabinoids in the body.

The challenge for the cannabis industry is disseminating this knowledge to other cultivators so this darling of the phytocannabinoids is available in dispensaries.
