he beauty and grand appeal of art is the notion that each work is open to interpretation and has the ability to connect with anyone. The 35th annual Southwest Arts Festival will return to the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio from January 27 to 30 to astound attendees with original art from across the country. Nationally recognized as one of the top 100 art festivals in the United States, the acclaimed Southwest Arts Festival features a variety of traditional, contemporary, and abstract fine works of art, jewelry and quality crafts. “We are very excited to be able to hold the Southwest Arts Festival again. We are taking all the proper precautions outlined by our county and using common sense to host the safest environment for our wonderful festival,” stated Vice President and Director of Public Policy of the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber, Diana Soto. Eleven different mediums will be showcased at the festival, including pottery, leather, wood, metal, textile, glass, print photography, fine art, and jewelry. Two thirds of the representing artists at the Southwest Arts Festival come from outside the state of California, ranging from Arizona to Montana. The 2021 festival was cancelled last year

because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but with new safety protocols in place, the return of this one-of-a-kind festival is anticipated with great excitement from both the organizers and the community. “We are receiving the same level of excitement from our featured artists. They are working on their inventory with a robust selection to showcase at the festival. The Empire Polo Grounds is quiet and serene, making it the perfect place for the Southwest Arts Festival,” said Soto. The Southwest Arts Festival is an outdoor event, which will provide ample space for physical distancing in an open air environment. The format of the event allows attendees to walk through the exhibition space without congregating for extended periods of time. COVID-19 vaccinations are recommended, but not required for entry into the Southwest Arts Festival. Attendance will still be monitored to ensure ample space for physical distancing. Facial coverings will be distributed at the event entrance, free of charge. Attendees and artists are encouraged to wear a facial covering when congregating or in close proximity to others. “Indio is considered to be the City of Festivals. With that being said, this festival of all ages will appeal to a wide range of

interests. Art is unique and approached with interpretation. The way art is seen is different from person to person on a unique level. It is emotionally, culturally, and physically affected, and that is the beauty of it,” shared Soto. Food will be available for purchase at the festival grounds, offering a variety of delicious options from standard American, Mexican, and Italian general concessions and cuisine. The Southwest Arts Festival will also be hosting a bar serving favorite beverage choices along with live music being played throughout the days. The Southwest Arts Festival committee is thankful for the 200 community leaders and volunteers who contribute numerous hours to make certain the festival is a success. The committee would also like to thank the sponsors of the Southwest Arts Festival: City of Indio, Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, Desert Urgent Care, LOCALiQ, Pacific Dermatology Group, Desert Theatreworks, and California Bank & Trust. The Southwest Arts Festival’s reputation for first-class quality and professional integrity make it one of the country’s finest juried art festivals. The festival will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the entrance being right off Monroe Street. Online pricing for General Admission with parking is 25 dollars and Senior (age 55 and over) Admission with parking is 22 dollars for all four days. Onsite festival admission pricing is 35 dollars for General Admission with parking and 22 dollars for Senior Admission with parking. alm Springs International Airport surpassed 2 million total passengers in 2021 and set their 7th consecutive monthly passenger record in December. The Total Passenger Count for 2021 was 2,092,943, an increase of 67% compared to 2020. In the month of December, PSP set its 7th passenger record for the year surpassing the previous record, set in 2018, by 8.6% with 276,527 total passengers. “PSPs route growth has created greater access for locals who were asking for more flight options”, said Harry Barret, Interim Executive Director of Aviation. “It is also revealing opportunities for our region. We are astounded by the record passenger numbers we’ve experienced, and we’re eager to work toward translating those numbers into job opportunities and economic progress for our community.” Palm Springs International Airport has set new passenger records every month since June. With the growth in the Airport's nonstop

route portfolio, airport officials expect 2022 to be a strong year as well. PSP offers 35 nonstop routes in season and 15 year-round routes, which is the highest number of routes that Palm Springs has ever had.

CONSIDER THIS

“Special thanks from these louses to our spouses for letting us make all this racket around the houses” hat pithy tribute is found at the bottom of the liner notes for Elvis Costello’s combustible new album, The Boy Named If. Elvis Costello burst on the British music scene 45 years ago. Part of the inaugural Punk Class of ’77, his classmates included The Clash, The Jam, The Damned and the Sex Pistols. Some of those bands would evolve, some would quickly implode. Born Declan McManus, he was the only child of Ross and Lillian, growing up in London and Birkenhead, he was surrounded by music. His dad was the vocalist for the Joe Loss Orchestra and his mother worked in a record shop. His earliest musical crushes were Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. At age nine, young Declan knew he would be a writer. Coincidently, that same year, The Beatles blew his mind. By his teens he had expanded his sphere of influences, becoming enamored by everyone from the Beach Boys and The Band, to the Grateful Dead, Randy Newman, Tamla/Motown and N.R.B.Q. He’d picked up the guitar by then and began writing his own songs. He started performing as part of a duo, then moved on to fronting the band Flip City, before venturing out on his own. Armed with only his acoustic guitar and an arsenal of killer songs, he won over the folks at Stiff Records and acquired the management services of Jake Riviera (who talked him into adopting the stage name Elvis Costello). Busking at a record company convention, he managed to secure a deal at Columbia Records. Musically speaking, his sound was much more sophisticated than his peers, Elvis quickly realized that Punk Rock allowed him to get by with only a handful of guitar chords and stripped-down instrumentation, putting his lyrics front and center. His debut, My Aim Is True, was realized with the assistance of Clover, a backing band from sunny California. Released in 1977, the record was immediately embraced by fans and critics alike. His lyrical acumen was bookended by concise melodies, no-nonsense arrangements, and brisk instrumentation. Heading out on his first real tour, he recruited bassist Bruce Thomas, drummer Pete Thomas (no relation) and Steve Nieve on keys. Together, they became Elvis Costello And The Attractions. During their tenure at Columbia, the four-piece effortlessly hopscotched through myriad styles, starting with the takeno-prisoners snarl of This Year’s Model, and the New Wave/Power Pop of Armed Forces. His fourth record, Get Happy was a spiky homage to Motown and Stax Soul/R&B. Meanwhile, Almost Blue found him covering songs by Honky-Tonk heroes like Hank Williams, Sr. and Merle Haggard, Imperial Bedroom was a bespoke, Baroque masterpiece and King Of America was an affectionate nod to Roots Rock. Although he parted ways with the Attractions in 1986, they reunited eight years later for two more stellar albums. In between and after, Elvis continued to follow his muse, producing albums by The Specials, Squeeze and The Pogues. He wrote music with (childhood idol) Paul McCartney, created a Classical song suite to perform with The Brodsky Quartet, whipped up an album from scratch with legendary songwriter Burt

Bacharach. 20 years ago, he reconvened The Attractions sans Bruce, with the addition of Davey Faragher (John Hiatt, Cracker) on bass, and The Imposters were born. In the ensuing years he has collaborated with everyone from Allen Toussaint to Jim Lauderdale to The Roots. 2015 saw the release of his thoughtful and thought-provoking autobiography, Unfaithful Music And Disappearing Ink. Three years later he and the Imposters released a worthy successor to Imperial Bedroom entitled Look Now. A pandemic defying solo effort, Hey Clockface followed in late 2020. As Covid ebbed and flowed, Elvis and longtime producer Sebastian Krys dusted off the Attractions’ backing tracks and stripped away EC’s lead vocals from the This Year’s Model album. Enlisting Latin music superstars like Juanes, Luis Fonsi and Jorge Drexler, among many others, to add their own vocals, strictly en espanol. The result, Spanish Model, became his first Top 10 album on the Latin Pop charts. Recently he reunited with the Imposters and recording remotely, has just released his 32nd long-player, The Boy Named If. The opening cut hurtles out of the speakers with the primitive cool of “Farewell, Ok.” A kissing cousin to Chuck Berry’s epochal “School Days,” the melody and arrangement, all rapid-fire guitars, pounding piano, wheezy Continental Vox organ, throbbing bass lines and punishing beat, also shares some musical DNA with touchstones like Little Richard’s “Bama Lama, Bama Lou” and “I Saw Her Standing There,” by the Fab Four. The vitriolic lyrics, however, are pure Costello. It’s a bitter kiss-off, he coolly eviscerates faithless lover, kicking her to the curb with his usual mix of erudition and verbal venom; “Goodbye, so long, there’s no right or wrong, this might be the final word I chance in the very last dance, the appeal of the trumpet to a pearl of red laughter/Of lipstick and kisses right here under the rafter, a fumble for heaven in a thimble

of draft, and a seldom of Elvis in the velvet hereafter, farewell ok, farewell ok, farewell ok.” That’s Elvis-speak for get out. The next three songs unspool with the sort of feral ferocity that characterized Elvis’ earliest albums. On the title track shuddery acoustic guitars line up next to menacing keys, wiggly bass lines and a truncheon beat. Lyrics resurrect an imaginary doppelganger from childhood, the devil on his shoulder who encourages bad behavior by promising no consequences; “I’m a lucky so and so, a fortunate stiff, you said you never knew me but I’m the one you want to be with, if I tumble from a tightrope or leap from a cliff, I won’t be dashed to pieces, I’m the boy named ‘IF.’ As the arrangement slowly accelerates, like a roller coaster clanking up to the summit, the tension rachets, darting organ notes slither around SciFi keys as Elvis unleashes a scabrous guitar solo thick with wicked intention. “Penelope Halfpenny” clatters to life with a fusillade of drums, vroom-y bass, carnival keys and jittery guitars. Elvis’ snarly vocal delivery belies lyrics loosely based on a teacher he sorta crushed on as a kid. Realizing even then, that teaching wasn’t her true vocation, he imagines she is destined for grander things; “Penelope Halfpenny asked a great deal, turned on her heel through her squandered ambitions while marking her time, taught lessons to all adjacent to crime from her days reporting to the Scotland Yard blotter/Who got who and who who got what, but none of that mattered, not one jot, to Penelope, Penelope, Penelope, Penelope Halfpenny.” Swirly keys and plonky piano leap ahead of grumbling guitars and rumbling drums on the break, as Penelope “disappeared with the dot of a decimal place,” a rough and tumble chiming guitar coda seems to seal her fate. On “The Difference,” strummy acoustic guitars partner with wily bass runs and a clickity-clack beat before locking into a relax-

fit Cha-Cha-Cha. Angular electric riffs and pealing piano notes ping-pong through the arrangement. Meanwhile, Elvis’ quavery vocals wrap around dense lyrics that are equal parts adulterous and Oedipal; “My father shamed me just like you, buried my name in a glass or two, ‘til he came to me in his darkest house, he mistook me, took me for his spouse, and my cries for a woman in the distance, so I took this knife to show him the difference.” In recent interviews, Elvis has stated the songs on this record turns the spotlight on that tumultuous transition between adolescence and adulthood, (inspired somewhat by his and his wife, Jazz chanteuse Diana Krall’s twin boys who have recently entered their teens). But he also manages to work in his usual themes of guilt, infidelity and shame. Take “Mistook Me For A Friend,” which blends a pounding backbeat, sugary keys, shivery guitars and throbbing bass. Elvis’ no-nonsense mien is matched by a pragmatic arrangement. All manner of grift, graft and chicanery are folded in to a nuanced narrative worthy of Raymond Chandler; “I had a pocketful of Presidents, a suitcase full of elements, the double-cross of spectacles, a mogul for the mechanicals…You took your clothes off after you sent him away, why now baby, would you ask me to stay, I knew it wasn’t right, if I could just pretend mistook you for a friend.” Then there’s “What If I Can’t Give You Anything But Love.” Revved-up drums, soupedup bass, sputtery electric piano and guttural guitars coil around the melody in hiccough-y waltz time. Hoping for some romantic reciprocity, he wears his heart on his sleeve; “Do you love me? It’s dangerous to answer in the dark, do you need me? Hold on while I negotiate the spark, anticipate an impulse, tell me what I’m supposed to do, do you want me? Do you want me? Like I want you” Dissatisfied with the reply he rips a skronky guitar solo and then casually reveals “when this is over, I’ll go back to my wife, I’m the man she lives with, in that other life.” This record is wall-to-wall brilliant, but two tracks stand out, “Magnificent Hurt” and “The Death Of Magical Thinking.” The former, which is also the album’s first single and it simply struts. Boinging bass connects with prickly guitar, spacey, Evil Genius keys and a ricochet rhythm. The melody and arrangement land in that sweet spot between ‘60s Garage Rock and late ‘70s New Wave. Lyrics limn the exquisite pain (the French call it la douleur exquise), that accompanies the first stirrings of carnal desire; “When we first met, I knew you were beautiful, you fit like the seat of a mohair suit, but the pain that I felt let me know I’m alive and I opened up my heart to the way you make me feel, magnificent hurt.” The latter opens with a Tsunami of drums, quickly matched by slashing guitars, flickering bass and snake charmer keys. Lyrics capture that perfect storm of angst and sangfroid, when teenage lust blurs all thoughts of algebra; “She took my hand in an experiment, put it where it shouldn’t be, put it underneath her dress and waited to see, I didn’t know what to do, I didn’t know what to say, it was just a game I guess, one I didn’t know how to play.” On the break, cyclonic guitars ebb and

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com flow as drums pummel and quake. Much like “Lipstick Vogue” from 1978, this track shines the spotlight on Pete’s prodigious percussive attack. The action slows briefly on a couple of songs. On “My Most Beautiful Mistake, tremulous guitars, whooshy keys and spidery bass lines are wed to a rock steady beat. The opening couplet alone is worth the price of admission, as it’s replete with Elvis’ signature wordplay; “She was a part-time waitress with a dream of greatness, that nobody even suspected, though it was sometimes reflected in the slant of the mirror, it was buried so deep and so dear.” The deft reportage continues, checking in with a “one-hit wonder kid” before refocusing on our heroine; “From the booth in the corner from a different perspective, where the man plays a fool or a private detective/ He wrote her name in sugar on the Formica counter, ‘you could be the game that captures the hunter’ then he went out for cigarettes as the soundtrack played The Marvelettes.” “Paint The Red Rose Blue” is an aching ballad that blends swoony organ, monochromatic guitars, sturdy bass and a tick-tock beat. This serpentine saga navigates the vagaries of married life; “The words that came to him, both the lies and the threats, they arrived all to easily, but they ran up some debts/From the thunder of the pulpit to the whispers of a lover, ‘til he found out he couldn’t tell one from the other.” Elvis’ willowy croon is suffused in recrimination and regret. Other interesting songs include “The Man You Love To Hate” and “Trick Out The Truth.” Both follow in the tradition of Costello classics like “God’s Comic” or “Jimmy Standing In The Rain” by fusing sharply sardonic lyrics to arch, Music Hall melodies. “The Man..” is a shaggy-

January 27 to February 2, 2022

dog story powered by skittery guitars, barbed bass, roller-rink keys and a thunky beat. Elvis affects a Snidely Whiplash vibe, practically twirling an imaginary moustache. “Trick…” employs stutter-step guitars, bloopy keys, sinewy bass and a see-saw rhythm. Here, Elvis’ vaudevillian vocal delivery is in full effect as he namechecks Marxists, Marx Brothers, Helen Of Troy, Myrna Loy, Mahler, Godiva and Godzilla. The album closes with “Mr. Crescent,” a mid-tempo ballad that harkens back to older deep cuts like “All The Rage” and “Radio Silence.” There’s a reticence and arrogance, terror + magnificence in this opaque character study. It’s buoyed by jangly acoustic guitar, thrumming bass, trembling electric guitar, clipped keys and a kickdrum beat. A low-rate lothario, who has his way with women then beats a hasty retreat, he receives a stinging rebuke from an unlikely source; “Crescent is like a man I knew, left me standing there with nothing but you, don’t be fooled now by his bill and coo, you’ll be abandoned too, he’ll leave you with an I.O.U.” The song shudders to a halt, finishing the record with a note of intrigue. At this stage in his career, Elvis has very little left to prove. His true, ride-or-die fans have followed every twist and turn of his musical adventures and will probably continue to do so, (even if he suddenly evinced an affinity Polkas and Trap music). Still, it’s quite wonderful to hear him flexing musical muscles he hasn’t relied on in years. The Boy Named If stacks up nicely with classic Costello records like This Year’s Model, Brutal Youth and When I Was Cruel. It’s the ultimate exhale, reminding you of why you fell in love with Elvis all those years ago. Raw, visceral and immediate. Exactly as it should be.

ith the dearth of new and worthy movies available for streaming as well as for big screen theatrical exhibitions, it would be irresponsible of me to encourage attending indoor theater venues in light of the current warning from our local health officials to continue avoiding non essential gatherings, reminding us that coronavirus transmission remains at one of the highest levels recorded ever seen in the 2-year-old pandemic’s history. So what’s a movie lover to do? I say stay home. I had second thought about last week’s recommendation of Joel Coen’s “Tragedy of Macbeth” after another viewing of Shakespeare’s dark play. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. I’m certain that the bold and expressionistic sets and cinematography were meant to enhance the mood and emphasize the language, but in fact it did just the opposite and was a major distraction although Denzel Washington was great as Macbeth as was Frances McDormand as his nefarious wife. So if you’re planning to see it, caveat emptor. This is not the best of

A question for you: Please drop me a line and tell me what you are watching these days? Have you been to an indoor theater? What did you see? Do you have a favorite movie you have recently streamed? the two dozen or so cinematic versions of the Bard’s dark tale, in spit of the German expressionistic design that reminds of Orson Welles’ 1948 iteration. In another matter, a movie I did like, much to my surprise is Spencer, Pablo Larrain’s surreal – almost hallucinogenic – take on a weekend young Diana Spencer spent at Queen Elizabeth’s Sandringhan estate in order to better bond with Prince Charles’ family. Kristen Stewart’s portrayal of Diana is perhaps the best of the recent spate of Dianas in the various TV movies about her and royals.

THE WINE GAME 2022 “

W

ine is a long game”. Yeah—tell me about it. I remember playing the Monopoly board game when I was a kid, and I thought that was a long game. But I’ve opened up this piece with a quote from Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth, who went on to say, “…it often takes a generation or more to learn the vagaries of the vineyard site. It takes a decade for changes in farming and vinification to show themselves in the end wine. Even the most experienced winemakers need more time to achieve their goals.” So—welcome to a new year in the wine game: it’s our annual first-of-the-year wine tribute that this column has written on since we began this editorial journey with the first CV Weekly publication nearly ten years ago! Where does all the time go? And where did all the wine go? Well—indeed, we sort of know where the wine went. The stats are in from last year: with the pandemic in mind, the wine industry reported that there were 10 million more wine drinkers than the previous year. And of course, prior to last year, wine consumption has been increasing in the United States. Since 2005, the average annual consumption per resident has increased by 33 percent to a high of 3.09 gallons in 2020. Anyway—with all of those huge numbers, it’s clear that there is as much of a business aspect as there is the artistic and culinary aspect to the game of wine in which we continue to play. And probably most players agree that we enjoy more of the drinking aspect than the business one. But we wine enthusiasts love playing the game with all who enter. One of the most celebrated aspects in the game are the wine scoring and point ratings. Although considered “humorous” in some wine circles—that someone can “rate” the art of winemaking contained in a bottle, or, that one’s tongue sensibility can tell you, what you should like, judging wine is a big business. Wine sales soar if the wine maven-about-town scores the wine at 90 points or higher on the scale of 100. And so it goes, but here’s the kicker: no new news here—there’s a new vintage every year which translates to new scores every year for the same brand bottle. Talk about a built-in biz— cheers! As a wine columnist, I can’t disparage it! I always reacquaint my mind with a New Yorker Magazine cartoon that depicts a dating couple relaxing on a couch and one inquires of the another, “Do you wine columnists ever suffer from writer’s block?” Answering the cartoon, in the real world— how can we? Every year there’s a whole new slate to write on. Conceivably, one can write on the same 52 subjects every year, and theoretically, it would be new stuff!

Honestly speaking, wine publications do in fact write on the same stuff every year. It is logical: issue X always writes on Bordeaux on the same week it did last year; issue Y always writes on Pinot Noir on the same week it did last year; issue Z always writes on ABC wine—well, you get it. The Wine of the Year is part of the game for so many wine publications. And everyone seems to like it. But what’s not to like. We vino heads don’t mind hearing about a great wine we may or may not have a chance to taste; because it at least reminds us of some wine we’ve had in the past that was fabulous; so good, that even those with poor memories can taste the wine again in their minds. Internationally speaking, Wine Spectator magazine is one of the most influential wine mags out there. So here is their pick: Wine of the Year is the Dominus Estate Napa Valley 2018. It received 97 points and sells for around $270 a bottle; and there were only 4,000 cases produced. So here’s a fun example in the game of rating wine and describing why: In our Vino Voice column of April 19, 2017, with the title of “Oh...You sexy Beast”, we wrote on the 2002 Dominus Estate Napa Valley (https:// coachellavalleyweekly.com/oh-you-sexybeast/). Robert Parker had given the wine a “99 point” score. Fortunately for our household, my wine collecting son had a magnum of the stuff!! It had 15 years of aging in the cellar and we felt it was ready to enjoy. I wrote then, “Well—I can’t seem to follow my own advice: when my son Paolo offered to open his magnum of 2002 Dominus Napa Valley for a weekday steak dinner, I balked, thinking that perhaps we should hold on to that bottle for a more special occasion—at least, for a fancy Sunday night meal. My take was that the Dominus was worthy of the weekend and not for a Tuesday night happening. “Paolo looked at me with that glance of, really dad? Haven’t we discussed this? He’s right! If he wishes to open up a $600 magnum of wine, that’s the occasion to celebrate!” The wine was extraordinary! Back to the present—Wine Spectator heralds the 2018 Dominus with this tasty description: “This is tightly packed with sleek, pure, driven notes of cassis, plum reduction, and blackberry puree allied to an iron spine, while subtle alder, juniper, sweet bay leaf and tobacco notes peek in throughout. Very fine-grained, but impressively sturdy in feel, with a long lingering note of iron piercing the finish. For the cellar, best from 2024 through 2040.” Is this a fun game or what! Cheers!

iberian Huskies are magnificent dogs with striking facial masks and piercing blue or multi-colored eyes, incredibly intelligent in addition to being beautiful. It is incredulous to see so many of these wonderful animals in public shelters throughout Southern California. And it is heartbreaking to learn how many don’t make it out alive from those shelters. In 2022, these incredibly beautiful dog creatures end up in public shelters in large

numbers. The athletic and independent Huskies can be a challenge for first time dog owners. Many Huskies are “Houdini’s,” escaping from fenced in yards. They should never be left alone in a back yard when their humans are away. They require a great deal of attention and mental stimulation. Some will require a very secure yard to prevent escapes. Unneutered males are even more prone to escaping. Sometimes owners

decide not to retrieve them at shelters after several escape episodes. A wonderful local organization, Luna Siberian Husky Rescue, saves animals from shelters throughout Southern California. They need foster homes to help save them. To view their adoptable animals, make a donation, or inquire about fostering go to www.LunaSiberianRescue.dog. Pictured here is beautiful Kayla, one of the dogs ready for a home at Luna Rescue. Go to their website and complete an application to adopt a dog at the rescue. Shanna Roberts, founder and director of Luna Siberian Huskie Rescue, shed some light on why so many Huskies end up in shelters. Shanna cites the television program, Game of Thrones, as one reason for the increase. The program’s direwolves are awesome animals that are super-loyal, read the minds of their human companions, and fiercely protect loved ones. “Thronies” purchase Huskies on impulse from pet stores and breeders without understanding the special needs of this breed and the work and commitment they require. Their highpitched bark may create issues in apartment buildings or other dwellings with thin adjoining walls. Shana cites the proliferation of illegal back yard Coachella Valley breeding operations as contributors to the overpopulation of Huskies. There are simply too many dogs and not enough homes. Shanna states, “These back yard breeders provide very little care for the dogs, and they sometimes send out sick dogs to anyone who pays. There is often no vet care. Animal control does not have the resources to police these illegal operations. You can adopt a beautiful Huskie now at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus shelter.” There is no reason to go a breeder and spend thousands of dollars when you can adopt a rescue dog of any age and of any breed. Search for a rescue dog near you at www.petfinder.com. Our local county shelter, the Coachella Valley Animal Campus, has some innovative programs to help active dogs like Huskies who struggled with kennel confinement. You can foster a dog for day’s outing and enjoy their grateful company. Or you can foster a dog of any breed for several days. Just go to the shelter at 72-050 Pet Land Place in Thousand Palms, and the staff there will

They are extremely active dogs and become frustrated in a confined small kennel space. They have a loud, high pitched bark which makes them unsuited for apartments with adjoining walls. n January 15, 2022 SoCal Adaptive Sports and Desert Recreation District celebrated their one year anniversary of an adaptive (inclusive) hiking program offered by Friends of the Desert Mountains, Desert Recreation District Adaptive and SoCal Adaptive Sports. From a trial that began on January 9, 2021, the program has grown to include multiple hikes throughout the Coachella Valley and beyond, looking for scorpions, riding in a covered wagon, taking the Palm Springs Tram to walking together on various paths. The people that hike are athletes and their family members and friends connecting with the great outdoors. The hikes are typically led and coordinated by Ada Nuckels a volunteer docent with Friends of the Desert Mountains who has really taken to heart of helping to develop a more inclusive society. There are also so many other Friends of the Mountains volunteer docents who ensure that we stay on the path and hike together. Last week the hike was at Willis Palm Oasis in Thousand Palms CA. The Willis Palm Oasis located in the Coachella Valley Preserve near 1000 Palms is part of a series of oasis’s that are found along the San Andreas Fault. It is located in the Coachella Valley Preserve which is home to more than 183 bird species. It is also the home of the protected Coachella Fringe-toed Lizard. If you are ready to experience some of the most beautiful hiking the Coachella Valley has to offer, grab your backpack and get out on the trail!

The hike to Willis Palms is an easy hike to a palm oasis. You can hike from the parking area to the oasis, which is about a 10 minute walk. You can also take a trail that goes to the right shortly after leaving the parking area that takes you on a loop above and around the oasis. The loop hike leads you uphill for a while, and is a little more difficult. If you follow the loop you will end up at the far end of the oasis and you can follow the trail back to the parking area. You can register for these free hikes on the Desert Recreation District under Adaptive Activities. SENDME A TRAINER

BY NADIA POPOVA

I

t is not a secret that many people are concerned about losing weight and getting thinner. It is not always easy to find the right way, but there are some simple rules to help you become successful at reducing body fat in a healthy way. Eat less, and eat healthier food: Calories should be less than 2,000 per day; Do more exercise: You need at least 30 minutes of exercise every day; Drink more water: Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day; Sleep well: Sleep at least 7 hours every night. How to Eat Healthy to Lose Body Fat A healthy diet is the key to losing weight. This includes eating more vegetables, fruits, and whole grains while reducing fat intake and consuming smaller food portions. Healthy foods are those that provide nutrients for your body with fewer calories. Here are some of the most important tips to follow when it comes to healthy eating: – Eat more vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Fresh is best! However, if you’re eating canned or frozen vegetables, make sure the sodium and fat levels are low. – Reduce fat intake. Learn the difference between healthy fats and unhealthy fats. Read labels, look up fat amounts in fast food and restaurant food, and choose fresh, lowfat choices as often as possible. – Eat smaller food portions. We often eat everything on our plate as if it’s a race. Remember that restaurant servings are often ridiculously large, and you should only eat until you’re satisfied – not stuffed. – Choose healthy foods. “Healthy” means high in nutritional value and low in fat, sodium, or sugar. Fresh produce, lean proteins (especially seafood and legumes), and healthy grains are all great choices. The Best Healthy Way of Losing Weight Through Exercise Exercise is one of the best ways to lose weight. It helps you burn calories and tone your muscles. The key is finding an exercise you enjoy so that you will stick with it. In the following section, we go through some different types of exercises for fat loss and weight loss. We also provide a list of exercises that are good for beginners. Exercise to Reduce Body Fat The first thing you need to do is to set a goal weight. If you have never exercised before, it is best to start with some light cardio exercises. These are good for people just starting out or who have not exercised in a while. You can also try some weight-bearing exercises if you want more of a challenge. You should work out at least three times per week for about 30 minutes each time. You can break this up into two 15-minute sessions or one 30-minute session, but try to make sure you are doing the same type of exercise each day. Ask your doctor before starting any new, rigorous activity, and consider hiring a certified trainer like Sergio or Antonio from Send Me a Trainer!

Drink More Water to Lose Weight! Water is the most important nutrient for the human body. It makes up about 6065% of your body weight, and it’s involved in every process that goes on in your body. It helps regulate your temperature, carries nutrients to cells, and cleanses toxins from your system. There are a few different reasons that drinking water helps you lose weight. Some studies show that drinking extra water helps stimulate your metabolism. It also helps you feel full, thereby reducing your appetite. Choosing water over higher-caloric liquids like soda or juices helps lower your overall daily calorie intake. Your body needs water to burn fat through the lipolysis process! Staying hydrated with water helps you get a good workout! And water flushes toxins out of your body and even helps you stay focused and less stressed. All of these are wonderful ways drinking enough water helps you reduce body fat. It is recommended that you drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Drink more water to lose weight! Healthy Sleep Habits Help Fight Body Fat It has been found that a good night’s sleep can help you lose weight. This is because when you sleep, your body releases hormones that make you feel fuller and more satisfied. Sleep also helps control your appetite by regulating your hunger hormones, ghrelin and leptin. When it comes to sleeping habits for weight management, there are two things to keep in mind: First, get enough sleep every night; second, maintain a regular sleep schedule. Losing Body Fat Takes Discipline and Healthy Habits Using all the techniques and tips described above and employing the help of a personal in-home trainer through Send Me a Trainer can help you get started on the healthy body you want today! You can also visit the Send Me a Trainer website or give us a call at 760-880-9904, and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have.

FREEWILL ASTROLOGY

WEEK OF JANUARY 27

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Author Helen Hunt Jackson said that one component of happiness is “a little less time than you want.” Why? Because you always “have so many things you want to see, to have, and to do” and “no day is quite long enough for all you would like to get done before you go to bed.” I propose you experiment with this definition in the coming weeks. According to my astrological analysis, you will have even more interesting assignments and challenges than usual—as well as a brimming vitality that will make it possible for you to accomplish many but not all of them. Your happiness should be abundant! TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Born under the sign of Taurus, Ethel Smyth (1858–1944) had considerable skills as a composer of music, an athlete, an author, a passionate lover, and an activist working for women’s rights. She was successful in all of them. I propose we make her one of your role models for the coming months. Why? First, because she did more than one thing really well, and you are now primed to enhance your versatility, flexibility, and adaptability. Second, because she described a formula for high achievement that would suit you well. She said, “Night after night I went to sleep murmuring, ‘Tomorrow I will be easy, strong, quick, supple, accurate, dashing and self-controlled all at once!’” (PS: I suggest you make “supple” your word of power in 2022.) GEMINI (May 21-June 20): According to author Olivia Dresher, “Feelings want to be free. Thoughts want to be right.” Well, then, what about intuitions? In a sense, they’re hybrids of feelings and thoughts. They’re a way of knowing that transcends both feelings and thoughts. When intuitions come from the clear-seeing part of your deep psyche rather than the fear-prone part of your conditioning, they are sweet and fun and accurate and humble and brisk and pure. They don’t “want” to be anything. I’m pleased to inform you, Gemini, that in the coming weeks, your intuitions will be working at peak efficiency. It should be relatively easy for you to distinguish between the clear-seeing and fearprone modes of intuition. CANCER (June 21-July 22): “If you are going to do something wrong, at least enjoy it,” wrote humorist Leo Rosten. I offer his counsel to you right now because I want you to have fun if you wander away from your usual upstanding behavior. But may I make a suggestion? As you depart from normal, boring niceness, please remain honorable and righteous. What I’m envisioning for you are experiments that are disruptive in healthy ways, and dares that stir up interesting problems, and rebellious explorations that inspire beauty and truth. They’ll be “wrong” only in the sense of being mutinies against static, even stagnant, situations that should indeed be prodded and pricked. Remember Bob Dylan’s idea: “To live outside the law, you must be honest.” LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Leo actor Anna Kendrick bragged, “I’m so humble it’s crazy. I’m like the Kanye West of humility.” I’d like to see you adopt that extravagant approach to expressing your magnificence in the coming weeks. I hope you’ll add another perspective to your repertoire, too— this one from Leo actor Mae West. She exulted, “Too much of a good thing can be wonderful!” Here’s one further attitude I encourage you to incorporate, courtesy of Leo author Rachel Pollack: “To learn to play seriously is one of the great secrets of spiritual exploration.” VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Sammy Davis Jr. (1925–1990) was multi-talented: an actor, singer, comedian, and dancer. One critic described him as “the greatest entertainer ever to grace a stage.” He didn’t think highly of his own physical appearance, however. “I know I’m dreadfully ugly,” Davis said, “one of the ugliest men you could meet. But ugliness, like beauty, is something you must learn how to use.” That’s an interesting lesson to meditate on. I think it’s true that each of us has rough, awkward, irregular aspects—if not in our physical appearance, then in our psyches. And yet, as Davis suggested, we can learn to not just tolerate

those qualities, but use them to our advantage. Now is a favorable time for you to do that. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “It is the nature of love to work in a thousand different ways,” wrote the mystic Saint Teresa of Avila. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, you’re due to discover new and different ways to wield your love magic—in addition to the many you already know and use. For best results, you’ll have to be willing to depart from old reliable methods for expressing care and tenderness and nurturing. You must be willing to experiment with fresh approaches that may require you to stretch yourself. Sounds like fun to me! SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “If you are drilling for water, it’s better to drill one 60-foot well than 10 six-foot wells,” advised author and religious scholar Huston Smith. He was using well-drilling as a metaphor, of course—as a symbol for solving a problem, for example, or developing a spiritual practice, or formulating an approach to psychological healing. The metaphor might not be perfectly applicable for everyone in every situation. But I believe it is vividly apropos for you and your current situations. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): A well-worn proverb tells us, “All good things come to those who wait.” There’s a variation, whose author is unknown (although it’s often misattributed to Abraham Lincoln): “Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left behind by those who hustle.” I think that’s far more useful advice for you in the coming weeks. I’d much rather see you hustle than wait. Here’s a third variant, which may be the best counsel of all. It’s by author Holly Woodward: “All good things come to those who bait.” CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Author Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote, “To be really great in little things, to be truly noble and heroic in the insipid details of everyday life, is a virtue so rare as to be worthy of canonization.” I agree, which is why I authorize you to add “Saint” to the front of your name in the coming weeks. There’s an excellent chance you will fit the description Stowe articulated. You’ll be at the peak of your power to elevate the daily rhythm into a stream of subtle marvels. You’ll be quietly heroic. If you’re not fond of the designation “Saint,” you could use the Muslim equivalent term, “Wali,” the Jewish “Tzadik,” Buddhist “Arhat,” or Hindu “Swami.” AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Since the iconoclastic planet Uranus is a chief symbol for the Aquarian tribe, you people are more likely to be dissenters and mavericks and questioners than all the other signs. That doesn’t mean your departures from orthodoxy are always successful or popular. Sometimes you meet resistance from the status quo. Having offered that caveat, I’m happy to announce that in the coming weeks, your unique offerings are more likely than usual to be effective. For inspiration, read these observations by author Kristine Kathryn Rusch: “Rebels learn the rules better than the rule-makers do. Rebels learn where the holes are, where the rules can best be breached. Become an expert at the rules. Then break them with creativity and style.” PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Piscean author Juansen Dizon tells us, “Don’t find yourself in places where people have it all figured out.” That’s always good advice, but it will be especially germane for you in the coming weeks and months. You need the catalytic stimulation that comes from associating with curious, open-minded folks who are committed to the high art of not being knowit-alls. The influences you surround yourself with will be key in your efforts to learn new information and master new skills. And that will be an essential assignment for you throughout 2022. NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS ARE BECOMING A DISTANT MEMORY. NOW WHAT?

he holidays are over, and you may have enjoyed enough sugar and alcohol to last you for a while so instead of a resolution you ‘ve made a serious commitment to finally losing that last bit of weight this year. How are you doing with that? I hear consistently from women who really want to get that last bit of weight off, but it’s gotten to the point it seems difficult and overwhelming. And sometimes it’s hard to know where to start or what will work when we feel like we’ve tried every diet out there… only to end up yo-yo dieting without permanent weight loss. There is a reason why Keto is so successful and the fastest way to take weight off. And there are many reasons why other diets simply don’t work. Most diets, by their very nature, set us up for failure because they aren’t designed to work long-term. We lose weight and then gain it back because it’s just not sustainable. With Keto that can all change. Keto stokes the fire of your slow-as-molasses metabolism and gets it revved up to burn fat rapidly! This may be your year to forget your past dieting and yo-yo experiences… once and for all. It’s worth a try. KETO DELIVERS FAST WEIGHT LOSS & MINIMIZES HUNGER Keto delivers the fastest, healthiest weight loss plan ever to get back your body back… hands down. It will melt the pounds off very quickly; you’ll have extra energy, and you won’t starve yourself to do it. That is one of the BEST BENEFITS of KETO…. You aren’t hungry like on most other diets. You don’t feel deprived and frustrated only to have disappointing results before you finally give up. Not with Keto. ARE YOU A WOMEN WHO GOES ALL IN & LIVES BY YOUR OWN SET OF RULES?

My clients have a lot in common. They are determined to change their life and embrace something new. They are open to a new way of thinking and living. SAFETY TIPS

S

trong winds have been in the forecast and more can be expected. Wind can cause considerable damage on their own, even without fires. Please follow the below safety tips: Wind Safety Tips: • The safest place to be during high winds is indoors. • Watch for flying debris. Tree limbs may break and street signs may become loose during strong wind gusts. Keep an eye toward

WIND WARNING SAFETY TIPS!

nearby balconies for loose objects that may fall. • Take cover next to a building or under a shelter. Stand clear of roadways or train tracks, as a gust may blow you into the path of an oncoming vehicle. • Report downed lines. Treat ALL downed wires as if they are energized! Do not try to free lines or to remove debris yourself. • Avoid anything that may be touching downed lines, including vehicles or tree branches and chain link fences. Puddles can

conduct electricity in some cases. Warn others to stay away. • Do not touch anyone who has been shocked who may be in direct or indirect contact with a power line . You may become a second victim. Get medical attention as quickly as possible by calling 911. • When driving, keep both hands on the wheel and slow down. Watch for objects blowing across the roadway and into your path. Falling tree limbs and branches may be in the roadway. • Keep a safe distance from cars in adjacent lanes as strong gusts could push a car outside its lane of travel. • Take extra care in a high-profile vehicle such as a truck, van, SUV, or when towing a trailer, as these are more prone to be pushed or even flipped by high wind gusts. • If winds are severe enough to prevent safe driving, get onto the shoulder of the road and stop, making sure you are away from trees

BY FIRE CHIEF SAM DIGIOVANNA or other tall objects that could fall onto your vehicle. Stay in the car and turn on the hazard lights until the wind subsides. • If a line falls on your car, stay inside the vehicle. Take care not to touch any of the metal frame of your vehicle. Do not exit the car until help arrives, unless it catches on fire. To exit, open the door, but do not step out. Jump, without touching any of the metal portions of the car's exterior, to safe ground and get quickly away. • Power outages may be eminent so remember traffic signals may be out so pay extra attention. • Visibility may be limited from sand/dust.

CYBER CORNER

What is 5G? The fifth-generation mobile network is referred to as 5G. After 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks, it is a new global wireless standard. “5G” allows for the creation of a new type of network that connects practically everyone and everything, including machines, objects, and devices. 5G wireless technology is designed to provide multi-gigabit per second peak data rates, ultra-low latency, enhanced reliability, enormous network capacity, increased availability, and a more consistent user experience to a larger number of users. Higher performance and efficiency allow for new user experiences and industry connections. How does it work? Radio frequencies (also known as spectrums) are used in wireless communications systems to transmit data across long distances. LongTerm Evolution (LTE) wireless technology of the fourth generation (4G) serves as the foundation for 5G. 5G is similar to 4G, however, it uses higher radio frequencies that are less crowded. This enables it to transport more data at a much quicker rate. The use of multiple small cells is required because the millimeter wave (MM wave) spectrum—the band of spectrum between 30 and 300 gigahertz (GHz) on which 5G relies to generate high speeds—can only travel short distances and is susceptible to interference from weather and physical obstacles such as buildings or trees. To address this issue, 5G could employ multiple input and output antennas to increase signal and capacity across the wireless network. Smaller transmitters could also be used in the technology. Rather than employing single stand-alone masts, they are mounted on buildings and street furniture. According to current estimates, 5G will be able to handle up to 1,000 more devices per meter than 4G. In addition, 5G technology will be able to ‘slice' a physical network into several virtual networks. This implies that operators will be able to offer the appropriate network slice based on how it is utilized, allowing them to better manage their networks. This implies that an operator, for example, will be able to employ varied slice capacities based on importance. A single user streaming a movie, for example, would utilize a different slice of

16

a business's network, while simpler devices might be isolated from more complicated and demanding applications, such as controlling driverless vehicles. Businesses would also be able to rent their own isolated and insulated network slice, according to plans. What impact will 5G have on me? 5G is intended to change our lives by providing faster download speeds, lower latency, and more capacity and connection for billions of devices, particularly in the fields of virtual reality (VR), the Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI). For example, 5G enables new and better experiences such as near-instant access to cloud services, multiplayer cloud gaming, augmented reality purchasing, real-time video translation and collaboration, and more. Where can you find 5G Wireless technology? In general, 5G is employed in three types of connected services: improved mobile broadband, mission-critical communications, and massive IoT. One distinguishing feature of 5G is that it is intended for forward compatibility—the capacity to support future services that are not yet available. Improved mobile broadband In addition to improving our devices, 5G mobile technology has the potential to bring in new immersive experiences such as VR and AR by enabling faster, more consistent data rates, reduced latency, and lower cost-per-bit. Mission Critical Communications With ultra-reliable, accessible, low-latency connectivity, 5G can allow new services that can change industries, such as remote control of key infrastructure, cars, and medical operations. Massive IoT 5G is intended to seamlessly link a massive number of embedded sensors in almost anything by allowing data rates, power, and mobility to scale down—providing extremely lean and low-cost connectivity solutions. Is 5G going to affect my home internet service? 5G has the potential to transform home internet service by offering a wireless modem

alternative to current wires. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) may now serve consumers via 5G infrastructure, making 5G an attractive backhaul option to fiber, DSL, or cabled solutions due to its coverage, performance, and deployment flexibility. Is 5G currently available? When will 5G be available to more people? 5G is already here, and worldwide operators began rolling out new 5G networks in early 2019. Furthermore, 5G phones are being launched by all major phone manufacturers. And, in the near future, even more, people may be able to use 5G. 5G is already available in more than 60 countries, with more on the way. When compared to 4G, we are witnessing significantly faster deployment and adoption. Consumers are ecstatic about the fast speeds and low latency. However, 5G goes beyond these advantages by enabling mission-critical applications, improved mobile broadband, and massive IoT. 5G mobile technology has transformed the way we use cell phones. The user has never previously encountered such high-value technology. Nowadays, mobile phone users are well-versed in cell phone technology. 5G technologies contain a wide range of advanced features, making 5G mobile technology the most powerful and in high demand in the near future. A user may also connect their 5G

BY DENNIS SHELLY

technology cell phone to their laptop to have access to broadband internet. There's more to 5G than smartphones; 5G technology should be able to service a large number of devices in real-time. This will become increasingly important as the number of internet-connected automobiles, environmental sensors, thermostats, and other devices grows in the coming years. Because of 5G's low latency, it may be possible for surgeons in one place to operate network-connected surgical tools thousands of miles away; medical practitioners may also be able to rely on 5G to swiftly send high-resolution pictures for use in diagnosis and treatment. Manufacturers may utilize 5G networks to remotely monitor manufacturing lines and keep video feeds of their factory floors. Some businesses are leasing their own 5G spectrum and replacing Wi-Fi networks with private 5G networks. Have a suggestion for our next article or have a question regarding 5G technology? SHAKY START FOR STOCKS

T

he stock market is off to one of its weakest starts for a year. Through January 21st, the Dow was down nearly 6%, S&P 500 -8% and the Tech-heavy NASDAQ -12%. This is happening as the Federal Reserve and Biden Administration have begun taking steps to calm inflation. The steps that they are taking are the equivalent of taking the punch bowl at a party and the market is reacting to this new reality by taking profits. It is also happening after the S&P 500 was up 29% last year. Many stock market analysts including this writer believe that 2022 will be a stock picker’s market. We feel this way because the market is a mix of wildly overvalued stocks and reasonably priced ones. To help you understand, let’s look at a few positions. Tesla is an investor darling as shown by its nearly $1 trillion valuation. Only a few companies have hit the trillion-dollar valuation – Apple, Google, Microsoft and Tesla until the recent market sell-off. Tesla was remarkable in producing and selling nearly one million vehicles last year. In comparison, the world’s largest carmaker - Toyota – sells 8-9 million vehicles annually yet Toyota is valued at one-quarter of Tesla. Independent rating service Morningstar believes that Tesla is worth $700/share or nearly one-third less than its current price. They get to this number by assuming that Tesla sells 75% as many cars as Toyota in eight years. Tesla is expected to earn $6.50/ share for 2021 meaning that Tesla stock sells at nearly 200 times earnings. If we value the stock based on sales, it is trading at more than 23 times current sales. Before we either agree

BY HADDON LIBBY

or disagree with Morningstar, let’s take a look at the largest vehicle maker who also has a robust electric car lineup – Toyota. Morningstar feels that Toyota is worth 11 years of earnings and only 1 year of sales. On top of it, Toyota pays a 2.3% dividend whereas Tesla pays none. While Toyota looks like the safer investment choice, let’s look at two other popular stocks amongst investors. Netflix fell by more than 20% last week as subscriber growth during the most recent quarter was only 25% of analyst expectations. At the same time, Amazon fell 11% in value as they suggested shipping delays may impact sales in the upcoming quarter. Both companies have strong management teams and highly defensible market niches. Both companies are growing rapidly, meaning that cashflow is being deployed toward growth. Netflix current price of $400/share is

DALEGRIBOW ON THELAW

about $100/share higher than independent rating service Morningstar feels is a fair value for the stock. The issue is that sales growth is looking to slow down to 6%/year and that just is not high enough for a company that trades at 6.5 times sales. Also, the market is getting increasingly crowded. Amazon’s price is a bit under $3,000/share. Morningstar feels the stock should be worth $1,100/share more. Current value equates to 3.4 times 2022 estimated sales. The price of this stock is supported by its expected growth rate of 17-20% over the long-run. Amazon has unique advantages like Amazon Web Services (grows at a 25%/year clip), Amazon Prime Video including Thursday Night Football next year and a side projects like Whole Foods. Toyota is the best option for the person looking for dividend income and the best value relative to sales and earnings. Amazon comes in a solid second due to its impressive growth rate and powerful earnings. Netflix still seems

a bit pricey at $400 while Tesla’s price is more of a vote in support for Elon Musk as the stock price seems difficult to defend. The trick to strong long-term returns is an investment approach that stays invested through the ups and downs. Overhyped stocks and those without the performance to support the valuations will typically decline the most while the companies with strong management teams, healthy cashflows, low debt levels and defensible market niches will usually outperform those without these foundations to their businesses. By the way, none of this is meant to offer investment advice. My hope is that you will see that there are solid opportunities in the market and that you need to do your homework or hire someone who will do it for you. LEGAL REPRESENTATION OF THE INJURED & CRIMINALLY ACCUSED

THE LAW WINS EVERY TIME I

FOUGHT THE LAW AND THE LAW WON! This is more than a Bobby Fuller Four song from the 60’s. The law arguably wins every time. This is because whether you are found guilty or not guilty, you still lose. A defendant loses time and money from 1. Being arrested; 2. Going to court multiple times; 3.Posting Bail; 4. Retaining a lawyer; 5. Loss of earnings 6. Dealing with the stress it places on your life. Thus there is no way you can truly win when you are prosecuted or when you have been in an accident and bring a case against the party at fault. Because of the stress you are under with a criminal case or PI case, the defendant often takes it out on their significant other/s. This leads to subsequent domestic violence arrests as well as divorces and disharmony with the family……not to mention the interruption of business and the financial losses incurred therein. The info above is equally applicable to Felonies, Misdemeanors, and Infractions. The defendant is being prosecuted by the DA and once the DA decides to file they don’t usually give in. As a matter of fact, in the Indio Court, there are a lot of young DA’s that are looking for notches on their belt which they acquire by going to trial and winning cases. Many

January 27 to February 2, 2022

of these cases should never have been filed and even though defendants are not guilty some decide to enter a plea rather than being subjected to the challenges listed herein. A defendant loses a case for many reasons. Usually, it is because the facts are against them. Sometimes it is because they cannot afford the best lawyer or the experts necessary to prevail. Often a defendant is just unlikeable either because of his/her appearance such as tattoos. Other factors I warn my DUI and PI clients about when going to court are: 1. When you are within a few miles of the courthouse you need to become the most courteous driver on the road. You do not know if the driver you cut off or flipped off will be your judge, clerk or juror. You may not recognize that driver but they will remember you. 2. Park your car between the lines, do not take 2 spaces. 3. Do NOT Smoke or spit. 4. Do not walk on the grass if there is a sign not to do so. 5. Hold the elevator door open for whoever is behind you. 6. Be courteous to everyone in the courthouse.

7. Dress professionally and cover tattoos with clothes if possible. 8. Shoes should be shined. 9. Nails should be clean. 10. A belt should not be old and worn out. 11. Ties should not be dirty. 12. Clothes must be pressed & cleaned. 13. Do not eat beans the night before. Every juror and judge is different and looks for different things. As a young lawyer, I tried a case against one of the most senior DA’s. I had to try the case because my client was charged with 5 counts and had a long record in addition to being on parole. If he pled he would go away for a long time. There was no chance of winning but the jury came back 12-0 not guilty on all counts. He was found not

guilty… however, he was far from innocent. I just got lucky and so did my client. I asked the jury if I could talk to them in the hallway to see what convinced them of my client’s innocence. The answers totally surprised me. They commented that the DA was rude, had an old belt, dirty nails, clothes that needed pressing etc. All in all, he was not well groomed. All of this leads to defendants and Accident Victims agreeing that the law wins every time and it is often not worth fighting “the law”... BUT YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT WILL SWAY A JUROR. ARTIFICIAL MORALITY

P

ulitzer Prize winning Playwright Paula Vogel, once said, “We keep narrowing the definition of what a play can be. We're losing the opportunity for someone like Samuel Beckett to spring up, because we no longer want our plays messy. But my God, sometimes we need mess. These are messy times and plays can reflect that.” The World Premier of Tony Padilla’s new play, “Artificial Morality,” is a mess. A creative, artistic mess and yet it strikes a nerve that lingers long after the stage is dark. Currently in production with Desert Ensemble Theatre, the company that Padilla, himself founded in 2011, Artificial Morality, is Padilla’s eighth play. It has too much exposition, way more telling than showing and awkward staging that left me trying to recall if I’d ever had a potential employer get up from a chair and sit on the desk in the middle of the interview? But with all of that ‘mess,’ Padilla’s new play is a brilliant reflection of the times. Staging new plays is a critical must for theatres and playwrights. Artificial Morality, is the story of our times. In an age of ‘fake news,’ and misinformation, selective truth and obscure realities, writer Rufus Foster, (Shawn Abramowitz,) is hired

as an editor at Unitech Publishing house. Unitech is looking for an assistant editor as well as a writer that will provide them with the next great book and Foster may just be the writer to give it to them. He’s the kind of guy who isn’t afraid to do (or say) what it takes to achieve success. But in a world where truth is just a manipulated lie, even George Orwell’s world of 1984, would be challenged to keep up. Abramowitz, stepped into the role of Rufus Foster at the last minute, as a precaution after the actor who was originally cast, Fergus Loughnane, was exposed to Covid. With such short notice, Abramowitz needed to be on book, but after the first few minutes, strong acting skills and talent made the paper in his hand disappear. Rufus Foster, may not be the most likeable character, but Shawn Abramowitz’s portrayal makes it easy to understand how charm can be delusional. Desert Theatre League Award winning actress, Bonnie Gilgallon, is wonderful in her role as Edwina Carter, the Unitech Supervisor who is willing to justify any misrepresentations of the truth, if it means money and success for her company. Gilgallon portrays the perfect archetype of a ‘win at any cost, as long as we

BREAKING THE4TH WALL

make money,’ persona. Scott Dilorenzo as Eddy Carter, is the nice guy who gets passed over for the promotion that instead went to Rufus Foster and Laura Martinez-Urrea, as Lola Lopez, the reporter who is the voice of truth and reason in a world that wants nothing to do with any of that, both do an incredible job at bringing balance and some semblance of normalcy to the twisted truth of the story. Cameron Keyes, makes his directorial debut with this show. Thomas L. Valach Set Designer, Ashton Bolanos, Lighting Designer, and Andrew MacLaine Costumes. Theatre is a collaborative art. The playwright passes the script on to the Director who hands it to the Actors. Stephen Sondheim said; “The last collaborator is your audience ... when the audience comes in, it changes the temperature of what you've written. Things that seem to work well -- work in a sense of carry the story forward and be integral to the

piece -- suddenly become a little less relevant or a little less functional or a little overlong or a little overweight or a little whatever. And so you start reshaping from an audience.” The World Premiere of a new play is exciting and transformational. It is now in the hands of the audience. Edward Albee, was spot on when defining a playwright. “Do you know what a playwright is? A playwright is someone who lets his guts hang out on the stage.” Bravo Tony Padilla! Artificial Morality is running through January 30th. For ticket and show information Contact: desertensembletheatre.org or call (760) 565-2476. Dee Jae Cox, is a playwright, director and producer.
