ig band music and dancing in the street await at Swing ‘N Hops Street Party, a free festival held on El Paseo on Saturday, February 8 from 12 noon to 5p.m. Now in its fifth year, Swing ‘N Hops offers folks the chance to travel back to a time when swing was king, rock music rolled, and everybody got up and danced. A one-block section of El Paseo, Palm Desert’s popular shopping, dining and art destination, will be closed between San Pablo Avenue and Larkspur Lane to accommodate a giant checkerboard dance floor and bandstand. The Swing Cats Big Band, famous for their Disney performances as well as setting the musical stage for Palm Desert’s Independence Day Celebrations for the last several years, will provide the live music. To make sure that everyone gets up and boogies, the band will play danceable tunes from the 1940s to today. The band will play with minimal breaks, ensuring a nearly nonstop soundtrack for the five-hour duration of the event. While dancers won’t want to miss a beat, all that activity can make one hungry. Food will be available for purchase from vendors including JoJo's Grill-a-Dog, The Big Easy Sandwich, Crabby›s Crab Cakes and Seafood

Delights and Las Carretas Taco Shop. Sweet treats will be provided by Cruising Cones, St. George Greek Orthodox Church of Palm Desert, and the La Quinta High School Culinary Arts Institute. If you’re feeling thirsty, a full bar will be available as well. Swing ‘N Hops is a family-friendly event, and partygoers of all ages will enjoy playing the games of days gone by, including a giant Twister game, chess and an outdoor bowling alley. A crafts station will engage and entertain young and old alike, as well. “We really want to encourage everyone to come out and enjoy a fun day with free entertainment on El Paseo,” says Vanessa Mager, Management Analyst and event coordinator for the City of Palm Desert. “Families with children will find lots to do, and I really believe music fans and dancers will be delighted with the range of tunes being played by the very popular Swing Cats Big Band.” Another highlight of the event is the display of vintage cars that really helps make the era come alive. Swing ‘N Hops attendees are encouraged to revive the glamour of times past by wearing fun, vintage fashions representative of the 1940s through the 1960s. Event Sponsors to date include Presenting

Sponsor City of Palm Desert, The Gardens on El Paseo, Liquid Catering, Bright Party Rentals, FG Creative, and Leeds and Son Fine Jewelers. Swing N’ Hops Street Party is a featured event of First Weekend, the city’s monthly art and culture program taking place every first weekend of the month, November through May. Upcoming First Weekend events include the Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival at Palm Desert Civic Center Park on March 7, and Palm Desert Brew at the Zoo at The Living Desert on April 4. A STAGE REVIEW OF ‘THOSE MUSCLEBOUND COWBOYS FROM SNAKE PIT GULCH’

A

uthor, Margaret Wolfe Hungerford, is credited with first writing the famous idiom, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” It’s a quote from her book, Molly Bawn (1878). It is such a commonly used expression that it requires little explanation. We all have our own unique interests and attractions. The same can definitely be held true when it comes to theatrical productions. Just about any playwright will tell you that their work is not going to capture the interest of all theatre goers. There is usually a target audience for most shows. It’s what makes theatre so diverse and rich. I will be honest in saying that I am not usually the biggest fan of camp shows that are obviously targeted towards a gay male audience. So when I accepted the offer to review the current Desert Rose Playhouse production of, “Those Musclebound Cowboys from Snake Pit Gulch,” I had a few doubts that it was a show which would capture my attention. I was thrilled and pleasantly surprised to find that this show was so much fun and I had a great time. Like most productions happening at the Desert Rose Playhouse these days, Robbie Wayne knows how to bring a touch of class and quality to any show he produces. “Those Musclebound Cowboys from Snake Pit Gulch,” a very campy musical, is written by a team of creative types. CJ Critt (Lyricist), Andy Halliday (Book), G.R. Johnson (Development), and Frank Schiro (music). I won’t pretend to say it’s the best written script I’ve ever seen.

BY DEE JAE COX

It’s not. This was a world premiere and I am somewhat curious to see what it actually looks like on the page. A few more rewrites maybe should have been involved in the process. But under the skilled direction of Robbie Wayne, this show took on a life of its own and was so entertaining, that I would dare a member of any demographic not to burst out into laughter a time or two. Wayne’s choreography was the absolute cherry on this delightful cake. It’s 1849 and the gold rush is in its heyday. But in the town of Snake Pit Gulch, the sheriff’s been murdered and claims are being jumped. New York Pinkerton Detective, Stanley Whimple is on the case. Disguised as Femme Fatale Daisy LaFleur, the detective heads out to this western town where there are no women and most of the men are ok with that. Anthony Nannini, as Daisy Lefleur is a performance that you really do not want to miss. Nannini,

is absolutely wonderful. Funny as hell, and just a downright pleasure to watch. Daisy Lefleur, is a woman to be rekoned with and Nannini’s inspired performance, makes her one to be remembered. Big Jack Slade (Michael Pacas) is the menace that has taken over Snake Pit with his cheating, gambling, hot coffee in the groin and lots of claim jumping. Every story needs a bad guy to stir up conflict and Pacas is perfect in the role. When Brothers Even (Clay Sales) and Sam (Kai Brothers,) get to town, they find that Slade has stolen their claim, so they team up with the new Sheriff, Wheezy, (Tom Warrick,) who hasn’t experienced sobriety in a long while, to get their claim back. Topeka, (Rob Rota,) is the Slade’s pretty boy toy who performs and keeps the men entertained. But when Topeka falls for Sam, it’s a game changer and Big Jack ends up on the losing end of that hand. It’s easy to tell that this talented ensemble is having a lot of fun and they make sure that the audience is with them every step of the way.

Michael Mclean’s wild west scene design is beautiful. I love a well-crafted set and this one does not disappoint. I admit that I sometimes fail to give appropriate credit to talented lighting designers, so let me fully acknowledge Phil Murphy’s lighting for this show. I loved it. I was captivated by the realistic beams of sunlight shining in the blue sky behind the saloon doors. Jaci Davis’ musical direction was spot on for this production. Music creates the atmosphere and Davis does a wonderful job of providing the right mood for this show. “Those Musclebound Cowboys from Snake Pit Gulch,” is recommended for adults and is running through February 9th, at The Desert Rose Playhouse located at 69-620 Hwy 111, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270. is currently producing the documentary “Close But No Cigar,” chronicling his 30- plus years in show business. The film features interviews with fellow stand-up comics Carrot Top, Jimmy Pardo and the late Ralphie May. Bonnell began his comedy career in San Diego after a decade in the U.S. Navy. He opened for Bill Burr, Craig Robinson, Joe Rogan, Jim Norton, Jeff Garlin, David Alan Grier, Adam Devine and many others. RANCHO MIRAGE WRITERS FESTIVAL 2020

he Coachella Valley is known globally for its colorful and popular festivals. But it is not just the movie and music fests that have brought prominence and notoriety to the region. The Rancho Mirage Writers Festival may not draw hundreds of thousands of visitors and millions of dollars in tourist revenue to the community, but it draws the most influential, intellectual and expert voices of the day to discuss their work, politics and the pressing issues of our time. The Seventh Annual Rancho Mirage Writers Festival held at the Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory January 29 – 31, celebrates the written word, readers and big ideas. Here is a glimpse of the heavy-hitters and literary marvels that are featured in the festival. This year the fest focuses on the upcoming 2020 election. With the Iowa caucuses just days away, prominent pundits and political persuaders will share their opinions on how the year may unfold and what it all means. IN MEMORY OF

O

n Sunday morning, January 26, 2020, news came by text and notifications that Kobe Bean Bryant, his daughter, Gianna, along with John, Keri and Alyssa Altobelli (who played on the same team as Gianna), Christina Mauser, Sarah and Payton (also played on the team) Chester, and his pilot, Ara Zobayan all died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas. The group was headed to Kobe’s Mamba Academy in Thousand Oaks for a basketball game Kobe was scheduled to coach for his daughter and other young athletes. As I pulled in to the Sundance Resort for the Sundance Film Festival, the shock sank in. The world lost another giant, another leader, another coach, another individual dedicated to greatness and inspiring others through deeds and actions. Children lost their parents, spouses lost their partners, friends lost friends. Sadly, the world lost an icon who represented so much more than basketball. Former NY Yankee and close friend, Alex Rodriguez, shared: “I learned so much from Kobe Bryant,” Rodriguez wrote. “He was naturally gifted, but had a passion for basketball like no one else I’ve ever seen. His work ethic was impeccable and his stress on mastering the fundamentals is what elevated him to the player he was. I’ve never met anyone more focused with a myopic approach. He didn’t pursue approval, affirmation or adulation. He pursued excellence

and process... He was a role model to me, and millions around the world.” Rodriguez said he cared more about being a father and a husband, though. In an interview with the Barstool Sports podcast “The Corp With A-Rod and Big Cat,” Kobe revealed the reason why he started flying in helicopters came after missing a school play. He had to find a way to find balance in his career and his home- helicopters saved him time, time he could spend with his wife and kids, often making it back to Orange County in time to sit in the carpool lane after school to pick up his daughters. His influence penetrated countless people around the world, even those outside of sports. Perhaps, my friend and blues musician Trenton Ayers, said it best in his Facebook post: “Kobe Bean Bryant... It TRULY HURTS TO ME TO KNOW YOU’RE GONE!! I Will Miss You In A Terrible Way!! You were My Mentor... #MambaMentality... I CARRY That Drive, That Passion, That SHEER WILL... Not Only To Win... But to improve... I’d be on Tour and would watch Your Professionalism, Dedication, to your Craft... When I was taught to Seek Greatness outside of my profession... I Chose You!! Whenever My Rebel Nature would be Questioned... You taught me to stick with my Guns!! Whenever I Doubted Myself... I’d watch Footage of your Rookie Season, or your 2 Free

throws after your Torn Achilles injury. Every time I was ill and felt like that I would just drop dead... #24 Was the number I would think of to push hard... As I Reminisce of your greatness, I can’t do nothing but tear up to know this hurt you as much as it hurt every one of us! Especially Your Family... I tear up because of the Fact that your babies (will only be able to) see footage of your GREATNESS!!! That’s why I’m Terribly Hurt!! As A Laker fan... We Asked you Give Us Everything you’re Capable Of!! For 20 Years You WENT BEYOND AND GAVE US YOUR HEART!” Condolences For Your Family!!! Fino a quando ci incontreremo di nuovo Kobe Bean Bryant Grazie!! ♥♥♥” People all over the globe have stopped to mourn the passing of Kobe Bryant and the tragedy of the lives lost. Kobe’s impact and ability to inspire greatness extended far beyond basketball. His creation of the Mamba Academy was to help coaches and athletes from all sports find the resources and support to be their best. His philanthropy was equally as important to him. Bryant and his wife, founded the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation (KVBFF). The goals of the Foundation are “helping young people in need, encouraging the development of physical and social skills through sports and assisting the homeless”. Bryant spoke of the injustice aimed

6TH SEASON OF DESERT HOT SPRINGS CLASSICAL CONCERTS PRESENTS FREE PERFORMANCE OF PIANIST ESTELA OLEVSKY ON FEBRUARY 9

he sixth season of Desert Hot Springs Classical Concerts continues with Pianist Estela Olevsky will perform at 4pm on Sunday, February 9th. All concerts take place at Grace Church, 17400 Bubbling Wells Rd., Desert Hot Springs. Admission is free, but donations at the door are welcome, and go directly to supporting the concert series. “In recent years, Desert Hot Springs Classical Concerts has presented dozens of free community concerts throughout Desert Hot Springs, featuring performers from the Coachella Valley and the greater Los Angeles area, and even places farther afield such as Massachusetts, Washington, Wisconsin…as well as Scotland, Canada, and Argentina” said Founder and Artistic Director, Danny Holt. “In

our sixth season we will continue to strive for the same level of excellence, presenting performers who combine high level artistry and an ability to communicate their passion and excitement with the audience–even those who are not already familiar with classical music.” A native of Buenos Aires, pianist Estela Kersenbaum Olevsky has performed on five continents and collaborated with many distinguished instrumental and vocal soloists as well as diverse chamber music groups such as Berlin Philharmonic Festival Players, the Lark Quartet, the Olewsky Trio and the Bach Festival in Buenos Aires under the direction of Karl Richter. She has appeared as soloist with numerous symphony orchestras in North and South America. In the USA she has

performed at the Kennedy Center, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, and Weill Hall. Her program on February 9th, Piano Gems from the Americas, will present a musical travelogue consisting of pieces from Argentina, Brasil, Cuba, Mexico and the USA. Written by master composers such as Carlos Guastavino, Alberto Ginastera, Ernesto Nazarerth, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Ernesto Lecuona and William Bolcom these works bring together the different ethnic qualities that give Latin American its own special flavor. at homeless people who are blamed for their situation, saying that homelessness should not be ignored or made a low priority. He noticed a number of homeless people outside the place where he played and was moved to take action on the crisis. Bryant said he wanted more out of life than just a successful basketball career. He accomplished so much more than basketball in his short 41 years and it seems unfair in such a world of turmoil to lose someone with such light and humanity. You have done your part to inspire us and show us a path towards greatness. As I sit beside a fire at the Sundance Film Festival, the epicenter of storytelling, a piano plays Elton John’s, “Your Song.” I can’t think of a more fitting song or lyric than “How wonderful life is while you’re in the world…” and am encouraged to know your imprint will last beyond your physical presence with us. Your story will remain in our hearts and minds forever. In 2018, Bryant became the first African American to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film and the first former professional athlete to be nominated and to win an Academy Award in any category for his film Dear Basketball. Life is short and we never know what day will be our last or the last day we see our loved ones. Don’t wait to begin, don’t wait to give a hug or whisper an encouraging word. The world is better when we all strive to be our best and encourage the best in each other. The passing of a legend hurts so much to the collective conscience because we lose that social mirror that allows us to see the potential in ourselves, the superhuman capabilities we can all achieve when we focus on the fundamentals of process, discipline and dedication. It is within each of us if we remember to choose greatness. Don’t forget to tell someone you love them today.

CONSIDER THIS

I

t’s been more than 40 years since Punk Rock spit, snarled, scratched and elbowed its way into the cultural zeitgeist. The accepted misconception is the genre was invented in London, England in the mid ‘70s. In reality, it is truly an American idiom. Bands like the MC5 along with Iggy And The Stooges kicked it into gear back in the ‘60s. Their scuzzy sounds proved an antidote to the Hippy-dippy Summer Of Love. A few years later four guys from Queens picked up the gauntlet. Donning ripped jeans and leather jackets, they adopted the pseudonym Paul McCartney employed when he toured with the Beatles. The Ramones’ music matched sharp sketches of urban decay with incredibly catchy two-minute melodies that owed as much to Iggy as it did to Phil Spector. Following their 1976 debut, their gig at the Roundhouse in London was rather famously attended by members of the Clash and the Sex Pistols. Emboldened by Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee and Tommy’s primitive cool, these nascent bands to adopt the same uncluttered approach. By the end of that year, the British Punk scene had exploded. Around the same time that Johnny Rotten and Joe Strummer were emulating Joey Ramone’s gangly stage moves and co-opting Johnny Ramone’s sped-up, downstroke guitar style, Los Angeles was beginning to experience its own Punk Rock renaissance. Although L.A. sold itself as a bastion of sun, surf and mellow vibes, beneath the smoggy-sunshine was a sprawling metropolis, a melting pot of colors and ethnicities. These disenfranchised, dissatisfied denizens simply were not living the California dream. Bands like the Germs, the Weirdos, X, Fear and the Plugz tapped into that dichotomy. The Plugz, also known as Los Plugz, were the first Latino Punk band in Los Angeles. They came together in 1978 and played seminal Punk clubs like the Masque, Madame Wong’s and the Music Machine. It was at that last venue that none other than Bob Dylan caught their set and became an instant fan. He invited the band to jam with them at his Malibu estate for days on end. When Bob made his 1984 debut on “Late Night With David Letterman,” it was the Plugz that backed him on a blistering three-song set. By this time, the band, which included vocalist/guitarist Tito Larriva, drummer Chalo Quintana, Tony Marsico on bass and vocals and lead guitarist Steven Hufsteter, had recorded two well-received records, Electrify Me in 1979 and Better Luck in 1981. They’d also created some indelible music for the soon-to-be Cult Classic film, “Repo Man,” starring Emilio Estevez and Harry Dean Stanton. By the mid ‘80s, the Sunset Strip had been taken hostage by Hair Metal bands like Motley Crue, Ratt and Poison. Punk Rock had ceased to be a driving force in the Los Angeles music scene. Bands like the Blasters and X had transcended the narrow confines of Punk, adding elements of Country, Folk and Blues. Los Lobos took it a step further and honored their Mexican heritage. The confluence of styles appealed to Tito, Chalo, Tony and Steven. Out of the ashes of the Plugz rose Cruzados. They immediately began honing a

CRUZADOS

“THE BEST OF CRUZADOS (WWW.BESTOFCRUZADOS.COM)

rootsier sound around town and on the road. Initially, they signed with EMI and recorded an album, but the label shuffled personnel and dropped the band. Cruzados briefly relocated to New York, an A&R rep from Arista caught their set at the infamous Punk club CBGB’s. Back in L.A. they played a showcase at Club Lingerie in Hollywood. Arista founder Clive Davis was in attendance, and the band signed with them. Although most of the label’s big acts were MOR artists like Barry Manilow and Air Supply, they managed some street cred by signing Patti Smith and Lou Reed. Cruzados self-titled debut was released in early 1985, it received respectable reviews and modest sales. It also garnered a legion of well-connected fans. Musicians like David Byrne, John Fogerty and Brian Setzer sang their praises. On tour they served as an opening act for Joe Cocker, Billy Idol and INXS, just to name a few. By the time they released sophomore effort, 1987’s After Dark, there had been a crucial change in the line-up. Steven Hufsteter left the band (for love), and guitarist Marshall Rohner joined the fold. The record smoothed their rough edges a bit, but still offered Cruzados’ familiar mix of rootsy guitars, sunsoaked melodies and heart-felt vocals. Stevie Nicks became so enamored with the track “Bed Of Lies” that she offered the band a coveted spot opening for Fleetwood Mac on their epic Tango In The Night tour. The music press constantly touted Cruzados as “the Next Big Thing,” when that prediction failed to come true, the band amicably parted ways in 1990. Tito quickly formed bands like Tito & The Tarantulas and Psychotic Aztecs, which featured Steven Hufsteter for a time. He really made his mark composing music for hit movies like “Desperado,” “From Dusk To Dawn,” “Mi Vida Loca” and “Million Dollar Hotel.” Steven Hufsteter has dipped his toe in and out of the music business since then, forming his own band Shrine and most recently playing with the Division Men. Chalo went on to form The Havalinas before becoming part of Bob Dylan’s touring band and finally, the drummer for Social Distortion. Sadly, he died from a heart attack in December, 2018. Marshall went on to play with T.S.O.L. as well as Jimmy & The Mustangs. Unfortunately, his intravenous drug use led to arrests, stints in jail and ultimately AIDS. He died from AIDSrelated causes in 2005. Tony has had the most prolific career, working as a session bassist for everyone from Pee-Wee Herman, Willie Nelson and Neil Young. He’s toured with Matthew Sweet, Roger Daltrey and Marianne Faithfull. He’s also managed to carve out a desultory acting career and can be found in indie masterpieces like “Georgia” and “She’s So Lovely” as well as mainstream fare such as “L.A. Story,” and “Roadhouse.” He’s authored several books and recently taken musical detours as a solo artist and as half of Americana duo, Cisco & Dewey. His longest lasting gig is as leader for the Jazz/Lounge combo, The Martini Kings. Not only have they recorded over 20 albums, their music has been featured in TV shows and television commercials, while constant

touring has had them perform for Presidents, captains of industry and even a Kardashian or two. Both of Cruzados original LPs have been long out of print. Luckily, the band has just released a collection entitled Best Of, featuring classic tracks from both records, as well as songs found only on assorted soundtracks. The album gets off to a rollicking start with an alternate take of “Rising Sun.” A more polished version of this song can be found on their self-titled debut, but this rendition was recorded for the aborted EMI album. Serrated guitar riffs ride roughshod over jaggy bass lines, Latin-flavored percussion and a locomotive rhythm. The lyrics take a page from the Mac Davis “Baby, Baby Don’t Get Hooked On Me” break-up playbook; “Party Girl, I see the lights of dawn, well, after all, I think we’ve had our fun, I see a rising sun.” What makes this song a true unicorn is that it features searing harmonica runs from Bob Dylan. On the break, stinging, Blues-infused guitar licks collide with his wild thin mercury. The arrangement truly splits the difference between an angular Punk attack and muscular meat and potatoes Rock. Although Cruzados only recorded two albums, a lot of their best work cropped up on soundtracks. Both “The House That Love Built” and “Strange Face Of Love” originally appeared in the Robert Rodriguez Mariachi/Hitman saga, “Desperado.” The former blends braided guitars, percolating percussion, shadowy keys and sinewy bass. Slipping somewhere between Spaghetti Western flavors and hints of Gypsy Jazz, the lyrics limn the regret and recrimination of a wrecked romance; “Forget about the past, forget about the guilt, I’m going back to the house that love built.” The latter opens with a short soliloquy from Antonio Banderas before descending bass lines lock into a Blues/Psych shuffle. Scattershot guitars snake through hairpin turns connecting with sinister keys and a crackling beat. Tito’s authoritative growl tells us how it’s all goin’ down; “The rain’s soul makes killer cry, he wants desperately to die, but skillfully forgets/He’s back on the streets with no regrets, take it like a man…the strange face of love.” The prickly “After Dark” appeared on the “From Dusk To Dawn” soundtrack in more laid-back form. By rights, it should have been the title track from their second album. This version feels more menacing. Tangled guitar

riffs unfurl over vroom-y bass lines and a bongo-riffic beat. Tito’s upper lip curls with an Elvis Presley-fied sneer as he tries to gain the upper hand with an irresistible femme fatale. Four more tracks pop up from their 1985 debut. The haunting “Hanging Out In California” is powered by reverb-drenched guitars, rumbling bass, Spector-esque castanets and a propulsive beat. The lyrics explore the dark allure of the Golden State, bitterly asserting “There’s a street that runs between those that got it made and those who have to wait.” “Flor De Mal,” which is sung entirely in Spanish, is a baroque bolero that employs flowery lyrics, willowy guitars, subdued bass lines and a stutter-step beat. Here, Tito seems to be channeling Ranchera kings like Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete. His richly emotional performance is matched by the cinematic sweep of the arrangement and instrumentation. “Wasted Years” simply crackles with authority, but the album’s centerpiece is “Motorcycle Girl.” Guitars cascade over spooky keys, loose-limbed bass and Charlie’s piledriving tribal tattoo. The song is rife with lyrical non-sequiturs like “You waltz through the marsh with the fruit of your choice, can’t get enough love, they had it, you got it rough/ Don’t look at me like a backwood fiend, I’m not a customer, start walkin’ start talkin’ girl.” (Huh?) But that doesn’t diminish it’s gritty appeal. Landing somewhere between Western Swing and Roadhouse Blues, the song is, to paraphrase Robert Palmer, wildly irresistible. Two songs from the “After Dark” album make the cut, the surprisingly sleek “Bed Of Lies” which sports a snapback beat, woozy keys, brawny guitars and an all-star cast of backing vocalists including Pat Benatar, E.G. Daily, Don Henley, J.D. Souther, Waddy Wachtel, plus Andrew and David Williams. Then there’s the bittersweet “Small Town Love.” Slashing guitars, stealthy keys and boomerang bass are bookended by by a pounding martial cadence. Tito and Tony’s warm harmonies intertwine recalling a lost love, insisting “It’s not the same old story, we weren’t bound for glory, just a small town love, our lives were made for something else.” The album closes with a raucous live take of “Don’t Throw Stones” If Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Guess Who ever collaborated it might sound something like this song, which shares some musical DNA with “Shakin’ All Over.” Cruzados played themselves in “Road House,” Patrick Swayze’s saga of a sensitive Zen philosopher-slash-club bouncer. Whatever forces conspired to keep Cruzados from actually becoming the next big thing must remain a mystery. But that’s okay, aside from the untimely passing of Marshall and Chalo, Tito, Tony and Steve have all found their niche and continue to make great music. “Best Of Cruzados” is a potent reminder that 35 years on, this band still sounds great.

Ten of the 13 albums she has released have been under her own record and publishing company, Gico Music. Another music project under GNA Universal Media is Indie Soul Radio, featuring genres like independent soul, funk, jazz, and gospel. The radio station currently has two programs, one of which being the “Mixed Bag” Show with DJ Prone to be streamed weekly on indiesoulradio.com. Indie Soul Radio will also feature a talk show called Time 2 Talk, hosted by Carey, Nikisha Keys, and Kimberly Blount.

GNA Universal Media will also house NDMETV, an upcoming family-friendly TV Network broadcasting original independent television shows and online web series. The content featured ranges from films and shorts to series centered on comedy, reality television, talk shows, and dramatic arts and dance. “I’m especially excited for my new show, Curiosity, that is scheduled to premiere on February 3. Other shows that will be featured on NDMETV include the documentary series Tell My Story—where various independent artists from different backgrounds detail their journeys in the pursuit of fame, the original game show Make Me Laugh hosted by Nikisha Keys, and Disconnected—a program centered on brining baby boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z together to hash out their differences and attempt to connect. With over 4000 different types of potatoes in the world, it’s a widely held belief that Idaho grown potatoes are the best. They benefit from the rich soil, sunny summer climate and pure water

The name in itself is very catchy and the bottles are very collectible. ocial media is revolutionizing how we find a spouse, a job, a house, and even a pet. There are 2.5 billion active Facebook users worldwide. This powerful social media platform now saves the lives of countless shelter dogs and cats, sending their appealing photos and stories electronically to thousands of prospective owners. Animals that might otherwise be euthanized due to lack of shelter foot traffic end up finding loving homes and bringing joy to their lucky humans. A volunteer at the San Bernardino City Shelter posted the German Shepherd dog with the freckled face on her Facebook page. Foster parents Vanessa Ruggles and Curtis Sweesy fell in love with the dog’s beautiful expression and the distinctive ring of freckles around his nose. They emailed Loving All Animals about sponsoring him. I wrote a comment on the dog’s Facebook chain asking someone at the shelter to evaluate his temperament. A Facebook friend soon reported back, “He’s a sweetheart, gets along with other dogs, about 2 years old.” A handsome German Shepherd with perhaps a bit of Akita, this young dog proved to be a sweet loving animal whose demeanor was that of a teddy bear. Mahto stands for “Bear” in Lakota Sioux, the name given by his foster dad. Mahto came within hours of being another grim statistic at a high kill shelter, but

now thanks to Facebook had a wonderful life ahead. With the gait and confidence of a show dog, Mahto pranced into the parking lot and leaped eagerly into our waiting vehicle. For anyone who thinks going into an animal shelter would be sad, there’s nothing like the feeling of joy when you escort an animal out the shelter door for the freedom ride home. Mahto happily gazed at the rolling hills and

inhaled the fresh air as we headed back to the Coachella Valley. Mahto thrived in his foster home, acknowledging Curtis as both savior and pack leader, and establishing his place in the couple’s pack of dogs. The eager-to-please dog was house trained and following basic commands within a day. I posted Mahto on Facebook. A Facebook comment came from Cathleen CoombsStephens, a former co-worker, expressing her interest in the dog. There was a happy picture of Cathleen’s other dog sitting on a couch on her Facebook page. Cathleen soon arrived for a “meet and greet” with her two sons. Our goodbye tears were soothed by knowing Mahto was going to a wonderful home.

Cathleen kept us updated on Facebook, “Can you imagine the joy I am experiencing watching Mahto and Elmo play? Mahto is also regularly getting in the kiddy pool. Today was a good day....Right now my son Declan is sitting on Mahto and he’s not even moving!” Mahto now leads a charmed life, living on a 3/4 acre mountain property with a loving family. The majestic dog runs along mountain trails, the crackling fall leaves the only sound beneath his feet. Cathleen reports, “He is highly affectionate. The minute I sit down, Mahto forces his head under my hand for a pet. He learns really fast, and looks to our other dog for guidance. The boys, Miles and Declan, adore Mahto because he plays catch and chase with them. THE WINSOME RED WINES OF WINTER

I

t’s surely a treat to be writing on two delicious red wines that are now currently on the shelves in our desert valley. And as we know, because we are desert dwellers, our session of winter tends to be rather brief. And soon after our Valentine’s Day rosé sparkler articles, we’re swift to meet up with the warmer weather rosé wines, sparklers, charming Chardonnays, and searing Sauv Blancs. But boy—do we love our red wines! And it’s time to talk about them. We’ve just enjoyed two recently released 2016 vintage wines: a wonderful Bordeaux, Château Malescasse, and, a legend in California Cabernet Sauvignon, the Robert Mondavi Reserve To Kalon Vineyard. One is from a classic wine region and is reasonably priced for dining at any moment’s notice; the other, is more than a treat—it’s tasting both history and quintessential wine making in a bottle For you Cab fans, each of these wines are deserving of their own complete full article. And I’ll probably write again this year on them, as they are wines to be savored and experienced. But the reality of publication is what it is—so let’s get to these winsome reds. For the older set of American red wine lovers—aka Cab Sauv lovers, we grew up

not only appreciating Bordeaux reds, but really loving them and being aware of the different regions of the Bordeaux area. It was fun: you were a Paulliac fan loving the Lafites and the Lynch Bages, or Saint Julian with all the Leovilles, or the magnificent Margaux. We cherished the French Cabs along with its blends; we also cherished (with an alert understanding) the Cabs of Napa and Sonoma. The younger set of Cabernet Sauvingon lovers were more likely inundated with the stunning California stuff—as there were so many great ones being released in the last ten/twenty years. Bordeaux on the other hand, unfortunately, became a bit distant in the hearts and minds of a new vino set— but a great Cab from anywhere is always treasured. But Bordeaux is back in the news again; interest in the most famous wine area in the world is on the up-swing, so let’s take a look at one of its new stars: Château Malescasse, with a new winery and cellar is now one of the best Cru Bourgeois clarets on the market. Its vineyards are located in the Haut-Médoc, barely a mile away from the Gironde River and consist of 37 hectares of vineyards. It was one of the first to be replanted in the “new” Bordeaux era. By the way, the term Cru Bourgeois generally designates those superior wineries that were not considered when the famous 1855 Bordeaux classification first rated and listed the wineries in existence. And what it means for wine lovers is that you’ll find a reasonably priced Bordeaux wine that delivers the region’s style, character and quality. I’m bringing this red wine to your attention because Château Malescasse is a Cru Bourgeois estate that competes with much more expensive Bordeaux chateaux. At only around $22, it tastes as wonderful as a more famous Bordeaux wine at five times the cost! It’s rich, round, and ripe with fleshy

full flavors of cassis, plums, dark berries, a touch of mint and licorice, with a wonderful perfume of the terroir found in and around the Margaux region.; a great velvety texture. The wine is a blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Fermented in stainless steel vats and then matured in oak barriques (25% new) for 14 months. It’s one of the best Bordeaux deals in town—as we said, Bordeaux (at a great price) is back! 2016 Robert Mondavi Reserve To Kalon Vineyard. ($175) We wine columnists taste through a lot of wine and write on the stuff we believe to be an exciting quaff for our readers. And then there are those select bottles—only a few per year that can surely be deemed “a liquid work of art”; wines whose flavors, textures and complexities stay in the mind of a wine lover for a long time. You California Cab lovers who’ve had the money to buy the high-end stuff, know well the Mondavi Reserve wines; the winemaker’s philosophy of crafting wines that are powerful, yet absolutely elegant; the sophisticated flavors of black fruit, warm spices; intense complexities, style and balance. It’s been written, “When Robert Mondavi chose the To Kalon Vineyard in west Oakville as the home for his new winery in 1966 he remarked that, ‘It was a vineyard with a distinguished history and a magical nature. Ideal soils, sunlight, and rain—to my eye, the vineyard was a treasure.’ Those sentiments were re-confirmed when the To Kalon Vineyard was named the Vineyard of the Year by the California State Farm Bureau in 2011.” 2016 was a near-perfect growing season which continued through harvest and the grapes were safely in the cellar as the valley’s first significant rainstorm arrived late October. Having the pleasure recently to enjoy this Mondavi Reserve with a New York Steak au Poive, we found aromas, flavors, and complexities off the board. The bouquet consisted of dried roses, violets, and dried Provence herbs; then the fruit aromas of wild blueberries, red and black currants with a quick nose of tobacco and cardamon came to light. The palate showed rich black fruits of berries, plums, and cherries; sweet spices, toasted almonds, black licorice and vanilla bean; and finally, minerality, earth and leather in a lengthy firm finish; an amazing blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. Clearly, this 2016 Mondavi Reserve To Kalon Vineyard will be the California treat of the year. You rich folk will enjoy this Cab immensely; your high expectations will be exceeded. For the rest of us, it will be the wine gift of the year either to ourselves or to a deserving wine lover friend. Cheers!

tunning views, fabulous food and satisfaction orientated service, await you for the ultimate in “eatertainment” at JAX Bar & Dining in Cathedral City’s, Cathedral Canyon Country Club. As I stepped out onto the patio at JAX Bar & Dining, which is open to the public, inside the Cathedral Canyon Club (known here after as CCC), I was struck by the spectacular San Jacinto Mountains, which frames the pleasant

“THAT’S EATERTAINMENT” AT JAX BAR & DINING

outside area, dotted with captivating orange umbrellas shading the filtered sunlight. The mountains were still lightly dusted with the latest winter snow fall, and enhanced the lunch scene on a sunny January afternoon. This is what Jack Srebnik gets to see on any given day, ever since his namesake restaurant took flight in October of 2019. “The response has been tremendous,” said Srebnik, of the feedback that he has received since the restaurants debut. The new reality

of the restaurant was implemented, when the owners of the restaurant, and golf course, invited Srebnik to apply his many years of restaurant expertise to turn around the former eatery, into a more successful enterprise. And along with Srebnik’s Head Chef Yeyssica Valentin-Rosa, he did just that. Srebnik is no newcomer to the Coachella Valley restaurant industry, with his highly successful establishments, Maracas in Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage, as well as The Slice Pizzeria and Ristorante in Rancho Mirage, he knows the recipe for dining success. His “eatertainment” philosophy sets the standard, as he deems dining out, as its own form of entertainment, “It’s where they get that something extra,” he states, and as an admitted foodie, it is a philosophy that I tend to agree with. It’s all about delivering excellent and attentive service at JAX, it something that Srebnik insists on, “We want to give the best service, service is where it’s at!” he exclaims, and as a result, his patrons want for nothing. Open for lunch and dinner, the menu offerings at JAX are as inviting as the service, and are California cuisine based, sprinkled with some Italian entrée dinner staples such as Lasagna (meat sauce, ricotta, mozzarella, and parmesan), Linguini & Clams (fresh clams, white wine sauce, linguini, diced tomatoes, chives) and Chicken Marsala ( marsala wine sauce, mushrooms, choice of pasta), among others. They offer an all-day menu, which include a bevy of Appetizers, Salads, Sandwiches and more.

BY DENISE ORTUNO On my visit to JAX, Srebnik provided me with some of their most popular dishes, and left me with a sated belly and taste buds. First up was the massive Smokin’ JAX Burger (lettuce, tomatoes, onion rings, double smoked bacon, smoked bbq sauce, smoked mozzarella, on a brioche bun). As a customer walked by and said, “That’s one heck a burger,” I knew I was in for something special. The juicy burger oozed with tang from the bbq sauce, followed closely with the crunch of the perfectly fried onion rings, and then softened by the creaminess of the smoked mozzarella. It was, you guessed it, Smokin’ good! Next up was one of their many popular Flatbreads, the Margarita (olive oil drizzle, tomato slices, roasted garlic, fresh basil and mozzarella). The crust was light with just enough chew and crispness, accented by the harmony of the toppings, it made for one delicious bite after another. The JAX Chopped Salad (chopped greens, red onion, black olives, salami, turkey, tomato, garbanzo beans, mozzarella, and basil, with a Dijon vinaigrette) was presented next, topped with a pretty edible flower. The chopped salad was refreshing, but still substantially filling with lots of protein elements. The last menu item that I tried was the coveted Bang, Bang Shrimp (lightly breaded shrimp, sweet continue to page 22

rom a historic perspective, potatoes and beer have a link that goes back centuries and is particularly linked to German brewing. Called kartoffelbier (kartoffel is German for potato), this style no doubt originated in times when barley or wheat were not in plentiful supply, and necessity became the mother of invention. I mean, let’s face it; nobody ate tripe and chicken feet because there was an over abundance of other foods. No, you ate animal guts and bird paws because it was either that or starve. I suspect it was the same when it came time to making beer, you either used potatoes or you went sober *shudder*. Many food dishes have come to incorporate both potatoes and beer in their ingredient list, soups and potato salads with a beer dressing are both popular German recipes, and can be usually found at Oktoberfest feasts being consumed along steins of beer. But a distinctly American twist comes in combing the nutty, creamy, mildly pungent flavors of roasted garlic with the dank, pungent, citrusy flavors of a west coast IPA together in a twist on the classic side-dish of mashed potatoes. If you’ve never had roasted garlic IPA mashed potatoes before, this is a recipe that brings new dimensions of flavor to a staple and elevates it to a starring role. According to the International Potato Center (I swear I did not make that up, it’s real) there are over 4,000 varieties of potatoes world over, including over 180 varieties of wild potatoes. The term “wild potato” makes me think of feral

potatoes, all covered in bristly hair and who will gore you with their potato tusks if you get too close to their potato dens where their potatolet offspring reside (I have the imagination of a child, so all of that makes total sense to me). Although you have many varieties to choose from when making this recipe, I chose good old Russet potatoes for their convenience, as they are the most common variety sold in grocery stores. I was inspired by the idea to come up with this after reading “The Craft of Stone Brewing Co.”, as the book contains a recipe for “Stone IPA Garlicky Mashed Potatoes”. Although my recipe is very different from the one presented by Stone, I none the less give them credit for providing me the concept.

IPA AND ROASTED GARLIC MASHED POTATOES Potatoes: 2 lbs. Russet, peeled and cubed Roasted Garlic: 2 whole heads of garlic, olive oil Sauce: ½ cup whole milk, ½ cup of classic west coast IPA (I used the single hop, Citra IPA that I brew for Brewcaipa Brewing Co.), 1 stick of butter, 2 bay leaves, 1 tsp thyme, 1 tsp parsley, salt and pepper to taste. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Cut the top ¼ inch off of each head of garlic, leaving the head intact but exposing the individual cloves. Place the heads cut-side up on a large sheet of aluminum foil and drizzle with olive oil. Gather the foil up around the garlic, twisting and

folding to seal. Place in oven and roast for one hour. Remove from oven and let cool before squeezing the cloves out from the bottom up using your hands. In a medium sized pan, combine butter, milk, bay leaves, thyme, and parsley, and turn heat to medium. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove bay leaves from sauce and While your garlic is roasting and sauce is infusing, boil your peeled and diced potatoes in a po t of cold, salted water until the potatoes are easy to pierce with a fork, about 15 to 20 minutes after the water started boiling. Drain potatoes and return to pot. Add the ½ cup of IPA to your garlic and butter sauce, whisking in just before adding to the potatoes. It is important to add the IPA last this way, because cooking the IPA over heat will actually isomerize the alpha acids in the hops, making it even more bitter and ruining the taste of the dish. Mash your sauce into the potatoes, and work until the desired consistency is achieved. If your potatoes are too stiff, adjust with more IPA. Season with salt and pepper to taste. I highly recommend this recipe! I served it to friends as a side dish to smoked pork ribs alongside roasted vegetables, and it was a hit. Try it for yourselves and let me know how it went!

No. 406 disturbed orphans with dark secrets. Are the ghosts real? Or is Kate crazy? Things are not what they seem… NEW FOR THE HOME THEATER: MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL

It’s not always a wise decision to adapt a classic tale in a new way for a movie. For almost a century, The Turn of the Screw, Henry James’ 1898 novella has frightened readers. But Foria Sigismondie’s admittedly stylish yet ill-conceived film version will disappoint horror hungry viewers familiar with the source material. Set in Washington State, the essentials are all in place: there’s a huge, creepy estate and Kate, a new, well-meaning, nanny (Mackenzie Davis) caring for Flora and Miles, two

One of Disney’s most diabolical villains returns for additional reworking in this spinoff of the 2014 iteration, also with Angelina Jolie playing the lead. Both films are rooted in the true prequel, Disney’s stunning 1959 70 mm animated “Sleeping Beauty.” Calling this version “Mistress of Evil” is a bit of a misnomer as it becomes clear there has been a change of heart (can evil be redeemed?), but the tag line, “evil has never looked so good” is still a bit unsettling. Still, The 2014 version told the story from a fresh perspective, making the king the villain! This continuation further explores the connection between the winged witch and her goddaughter Aurora (Elle Fanning again),

the future queen, as they question the bond between them as they are pulled in different directions by impending nuptials, unexpected allies and new dark forces that impact their battle to secure the woodlands, fields and the “enchanted” creatures that dwell in the wider region. This lush, beautifully crafted fantasy adventure film delivers everything the poster, prequel and trailer promise. A very rare event. A perfect family film for all ages that does not ignore larger themes that are relevant in our sometimes all too real world. Generous extras include a making of featurette, extended scenes, Aurora’s wedding, outtakes and more. Recommended. Disney. 4K UHD/Blu-ray. THE FUGITIVE KIND (1960)

A decade after what began as “Battle of the Angels,” Tennessee Williams’ rough draft of his unproduced 1939 play morphed into “Orpheus Descending,” which was well received on Broadway. The renamed film version, directed by Sydney Lumet stars a young Marlon Brando at the peak of his method-driven performances. Brando plays Valentine “Snakeskin” Xavier, a troubled drifter who stumbles into a wonderfully gothic and very “Williamsish” town (i.e., a store-keeper dying of cancer, a frustrated wife, a murderous mob etc.) where he gets involved with alcoholic Carole Cutere (Joanne Woodward) and the unhappily married Lady Torrance (Anna Magnani). The screenplay was co-written by Williams and TV writer Meade Roberts. This tempestuous, stagey but often compelling melodrama of small-town meanness is toploaded with not so subtle sexual symbolism. Hardly anyone saw this when it was released in theaters in 1960, the same year as Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” which shared somewhat similar themes and the gothic-like setting. The Criterion edition looks great and, as usual, has generous extras that are eminently watchable. Criterion. Blu-ray. WRINKLES THE CLOWN In late 2014, a low-res video of a person in a clown mask emerging from underneath a sleeping child’s bed appears on YouTube. The description below the video claims the clown is named “Wrinkles,” that he lives in southwest Florida and that he has been hired by the parents to frighten her for misbehaving. The video goes viral. Soon, more mysterious videos of Wrinkles scaring children appear online, along with a phone number to hire him for “behavioral services.” Wrinkles becomes internet lore – a whole

genre of YouTube videos of kids filming themselves calling him appears online, and over a million messages are left at the number. Voicemails range from disturbing to hilarious to terrifying: parents use the numbers to terrify children, kids who are obsessive fans of creepy clowns reach out to make a new friends, children threaten to inflict wildly creative violence if he coms anywhere near them. But who is Wrinkles, and why is he doing this? With incredible access to the mastermind behind the mask, this cryptic and playful (?) exploration of these questions, is an inside look at myth-building and the unpredictable spread of fear and folklore on the internet. This timely warning of our cyber-connected neural networks should not be dismissed as a meaningless joke, hoax or meta-prank. This phenom is something far worse and much darker. We have been warned. BOOK REVIEW

"NOTHING TO SEE HERE" BY KEVIN WILSON FICTION

hildhood is like a strange dream. For some, it’s not until we are adults -- older adults – that we are able to get a perspective of our formative years. Good or bad, there is little we can do to shape our own childhood. We were innocent beings doing our best to cope with the adults who raised us. In Kevin Wilson’s Nothing to See Here (Ecco, 257 pages), a young woman finds a passion for parenting children who burst into flames. Lillian narrates her story. She grew up with a single mother and never knew anything about her father. Lillian always felt like a burden. Her mother was uninterested and impatient and saw Lillian as a problem in her way. She and her mother struggled financially, and lived on the wrong side of town. Little Lillian found escape in books and school. Earning a scholarship to an elite private girls’ high school -- only available to one or two poor but worthy local girls -- Lillian meets Madison, a girl from a wealthy and influential family. The two become best

friends finding that their eccentricities jive. They both play on the basketball team. But, when Madison makes a mistake that can get her kicked out, Lillian takes the fall. Her mother takes a cash bribe for Lillian’s fake confession and subsequent dismissal. As an adult, Lillian, never able to recover from the expulsion, lives at home and works at Save-A-Lot. All her dreams and the promises of a good future gone, she has settled with her simple and uninteresting life, when Madison asks Lillian for her help. Madison is married to a Tennessee Senator, soon to be U.S. Secretary of State. She is his second wife. Madison needs Lillian to act as a governess to her husband’s twins from a previous marriage. There is a problem with the kids – they catch fire, spontaneously ignite! It is Lillian’s job to protect and entertain the kids while also keeping them out of the public eye and preventing them from combusting. It is work Lillian cannot refuse. She always loved Madison and it beats living in her mother’s attic, plus it pays well. She takes the job and discovers she relates to the children in surprising ways. Even as the twins burn, Lillian becomes their friend and champion, appreciating and relating to their strange and unusual gift. This is a fun story. I liked Lillian right away. I felt her suffering alone as an outsider. No family or mother to comfort, accept or encourage her. But, she does not consider

herself a victim. She willingly accepts her destiny. I also liked Madison as the rich girl who also suffers without much love in her life. She too has accepted her fate. It’s just that Madison is destined for greater things --like being First Lady.

SAFETY TIPS

The “fire children,” Bessie and Roland, are marvelous. The twins do their best to not ignite, but they are emotional creatures and it takes Lillian’s compassion and understanding to reach and teach these outcast kids to cope. Caring for the twins, Lillian is happy to find she can love unconditionally, and to her surprise -- be loved in return. Author Wilson writes an entertaining tale of our fragile human condition. It reminds just how stressful it is to navigate childhood, especially in a volatile world that is on the verge of bursting into flames.

YOUR SUPER BOWL STRATEGY STARTS RIGHT HERE!

A

s you prepare for Super bowl festivities make sure to be a good sport and keep your ‘Safety’ front and center at all times,” reminds Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. Why? Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest one-day sporting event in the United States and unfortunately one of the most dangerous days on roads and highways. It’s estimated that 325 million gallons of beer are consumed by Americans on Super Bowl Sunday. That’s roughly one gallon for every man, woman, and child in the country. Aggressive behavior increase and there are more opportunities for food poisoning than any other day. So, are you hosting the game in your Home Field? Be a good Quarterback and avoid a false start with unhealthy foods. Keep the ‘tight end’ looking just that ‘tight’ by adding healthy snacks to your menu instead of high fat foods, or go for that super bowl trophy by serving all healthy snacks. Let’s avoid that ‘Wide Receiver’ if possible. Watch your ‘Safety’ as you prepare “

game day meals and snacks, follow food safety guidelines to prevent illness. If you’re barbequing make sure you have a fire extinguisher near and keep the grill away from combustibles. Limit alcohol. None of us want a penalty for drinking and driving. Be a good Line Backer and take steps to make sure you and other guests avoid driving under the influence of alcohol. Be a good Center and designate a non-drinking driver before any party or celebration begins. Never leave children unattended. Make sure your pets can handle the excitement before placing them in new or strange situations. Don’t be the “Offensive Lineman” by being a poor sport or offending others. People and their behavior have a tendency to change on Super Bowl Sunday. Don’t get tackled un-expectantly, keep the attitude in check and use common sense! Have fun, be Safe and avoid any unnecessary roughage by being smart and using your “situational awareness” at all times!

FUN FLU FACTS

N

ow that I’ve got your attention, the truth is that there is nothing fun about the flu. The latest outbreak is reminiscent of the SARS outbreak of 2002-2003 that originated in China. In that pandemic, nearly 1 in 10 people who contracted the virus died. That pandemic could be traced back to one of the exotic wildlife markets in Guangdong, China. Early thoughts on the 2019 Novel Coronavirus are that it broke out in an exotic market in Wuhan. As flu season typically occurs during our high season for tourism and winter residents from around the world, let’s take a moment and make sure that you know the basics as it relates to the flu. There are three types of flu: A, B and C. Type A flus are the type that can kill the most people and are found in humans and animals. Type B only affect humans and can cause an epidemic but not a pandemic like Type A. Type C makes people mildly ill, but it passes quickly. If you contract the flu, the most common and deadly complication is bacterial pneumonia. Sepsis is another deadly complication that can occasionally occur. When catching the flu, you are contagious from the day before you feel sick until about a week after getting sick. If exposed to any flu virus, you will typically become ill four to five days after exposure although some people get symptoms as soon as the next day. The way you catch a deadly strain like the

2019 Coronavirus is the same as you would catch any flu – via a sneeze or touching a common, contaminated surface. This is why businesses like Shanghai Disney or Starbucks would take the extraordinary measure of closing their facilities until the outbreak has been contained. The flu virus can live on surfaces for hours and contaminated water for days. The thing that makes it so hard to cure a strain like the 2019 Coronavirus is that it will mutate and change more in one day than the human species will evolve over millions of years. It is hard to treat and strong and ever-changing virus. If you get the vaccine, it takes two weeks for the shot to protect you. While some people feel like they get a little bit of the flu

DALE GRIBOW ON THE LAW

A

from the shot, experts are adamant that this is not the flu but a side effect experienced by a small percentage of people. Those who are over 65 years of age or under 2 are at the greatest risk of contracting any flu. Native Americans contract the flu four times more easily than the general population. Other groups that should be especially careful are those with weakened immune systems due to a chronic condition or a Body Mass Index of more than 40. As we are seeing with this new strain, air travel helps in the rapid spread of viruses between continents. With 4.7 billion passengers expected to take to the skies in 2020, you can see how pandemics are so much more difficult to contain today than in the past.

The most deadly flu outbreak in modern history occurred from 1918 through 1920. Called the Spanish Flu, it is estimated to have infected 500 million people while killing nearly 1 in 5! The origins of this flu strain have been tracked back to the farming community of Haskell County, Kansas where locals who joined the war efforts spread the disease to Europe during World War I. By the time soldiers returned to the United States, the virus had transformed into the deadliest killer in modern times. LEGAL REPRESENTATION OF THE INJURED & CRIMINALLY ACCUSED

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER AN ACCIDENT?

fter an accident the most important things is gather all the info and not talk to insurance companies and then to get better. If you are hurting you need medical attention. Our office can help you obtain a doctor to take the case on a lien in most situations. Of course one of the first things accident victims ask is what is the value of my case? The value of a case is based in part on your medicals. Please keep a pain and suffering diary to track your visits and write down what is hurting you. List what hurts from top of your head to the bottom of your toes. When you are contacted by any insurance company, advise them you would be happy to talk but your lawyer asked to get his permission before you talk to them. That way we are the bad guys for not allowing you to make a statement. The insurance adjusters will tell you anything, to stop you from retaining a lawyer. They will say that if you hire an attorney s/he will take 40%. That is a lie, as almost every lawyer in the country charges 1/3. However, your attorney will assist you in getting a fair settlement. You don’t want to settle to fast with the insurance company as some medical issues develop over time. By settling right away, you may lose out on getting money for future medical treatment

January 30 to February 5, 2020

and loss of earnings. However, you must be aware of the Statute of Limitation which places a time limit of 2 years to file an accident claim. For many decades my personal mission has been to help my Coachella Valley make great decisions about their legal situations. When we can’t get a fair offer from the insurance company we file a lawsuit and start civil litigation. Civil litigation is usually litigation involving private parties, as opposed to criminal where you are prosecuted by the state. Civil could be because of damages from an accident or money owed. Civil litigation is confusing for lawyers. For non-lawyers...it is a nightmare. Most lawyers, unlike our office, fail to educate their clients about what to expect. For instance, there are 4 phases to a Civil Accident Lawsuit: Initially a lawyer attempts to settle the matter, but may have to file a Complaint called a Lawsuit. This is the Pleadings phase, where the victim explains in the complaint what the defendant did and how much they are demanding. The defendant often files an Answer or a Demurrer (where they claim there is not enough evidence to proceed). The Discovery phase is next, and is the most time intensive. This is where both

sides share evidence. Discovery discloses facts, hopefully resulting in a settlement, dismissal or trial in front of an Arbitrator or Judge. Most cases are settled because trials, on a soft tissue accident case are so costly The Post Trial Stage comes after the trial. On an auto accident case if there is no insurance or not enough insurance, the lawyer must try to then collect the judgement. The judge’s ruling is just his/her decision and not an order. Now the lawyer has to try to find assets. If the defendant disagrees with the verdict, s/he can hire an appellate lawyer to file an Appeal. It is often said if you have to try a soft tissue accident case you have lost. This is because of the tremendous costs involved. Unfortunately, a trial is always a potential crap shoot.

chili Sriracha sauce), which Srebnik promised would top my flavor charts, as it is one of their best sellers. Ok, these things were incredible, and a must on your visit to JAX!! They were just ever so delicately puffed from a dip in the fryer, then glazed with the sweet and spicy creamy dipping sauce, seriously addicting…and I shamefully almost ate the whole order. Yum!!! As an addition to the regular menu at JAX, they also offer Taco Tuesdays from 3pm to 8pm, inspired from Srebnik’s Maracas restaurants. The Mexican food night features Street Tacos (chicken, beef, crispy fish and carnitas) Chile Relleno, Fajita Burrito and more, plus Happy Hour drink specials. And speaking of Happy Hour, patrons can enjoy it daily from 3pm to 7pm in the bar and patio, and they have entertainment Friday and Saturday nights and every other Thursday night. Another one of the specialty nights include their Prime Rib (mashed potatoes, green beans, creamy horseradish, au jus) on Friday and Saturday nights, which usually sells out. WHY CONSISTENCY IS VITAL TO YOUR SUCCESS

T

he conversations sparked within my home are always engaging, interesting and I’m continuously challenged. Raising two daughters, I’m sure you can imagine or relate. I do my best to share my knowledge and experiences to help my girls make wise decisions in their life. The topic about consistency came about and it led to this… Everyone desires consistency whether it’s running a business, dieting, parenting, etc. Consistency establishes routine and assists in building momentum. Like parenting… I’m consistent when it comes to discipline and I’m brutally honest. If I say no, there isn’t room for negotiation. However, there are times I make room for my girls to state their case and proceed from there. Any goal or dream who’ve ever achieved was because you were consistent. If you lose your momentum you’ll likely fall short of your goal. Any business owner knows if they slip up one day it could effect them significantly. Take for instance your favorite restaurant. You order your go-to entree and it arrives cold. Your server responds; lacking concern and doesn’t care whether you’re happy with

your order. Chances are you’ll not revisit the restaurant again. John Maxwell, a leadership guru said, “Small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time.” I agree wholeheartedly. I can speak from my own personal experience. Be persistent and consistent. You’ll be wildly successful if you maintain your consistency. Bronwyn Ison is the owner of Evolve Yoga and bronwynison.com. KETO ON THE GO

(Written by a Krazy for Keto nomad who spent four months on the road. Leaving from Palm Desert, CA with stops in Utah, Wyoming and Montana in the United Sates. Then off to Banff, Lake Louise, Kelowna, Whistler, Vancouver and Victoria in Canada. There were plenty of little towns, side roads and unique stops in between. Every one of them offering a different temptation. My husband and I, he’s also Keto, had the time of our lives exploring new adventures, beauty spots and food! To be transparent food was a big part of our travels since we’re big-time foodies. Read on and find out more about how we did it… and how you can do it too) eeping it Keto! Does it seem impossible that you could eat Keto on the Go for four months? You may be thinking that’s a long time to be away from home, the comfort of a routine, having your own kitchen and living out of a suitcase. It is and there were many temptations at every turn that are traditional Canadian foods. Like Poutines, Huckleberry and Rhubarb pies, Meat pies, Timbits donut holes, Tim’s maple doughnut, Bannock bread, Nanaimo bars, Dutch’s potato chips, Maple syrup everything, Pierogies and so many other mouth-watering specialty dishes. First of all, you start with mindset. It doesn’t matter if you are here in the desert or Victoria Canada… it’s all the same. You must be committed to Keto as a lifestyle and choose satisfying Keto foods. I didn’t try any of the foods I listed above, and left Canada satisfied that I hadn’t left a food stone unturned. The fresh salmon and seafood and delicious grass-fed beef and bacon kept me going. Not to mention, the fact I wasn’t gaining weight on my trip was worth it to me. Because of my mindset, I was able to maintain my weight, not feel deprived and not have carb hangovers! Here’s my personal experience spending time in different towns, long days in the car and eating out often. Always Be Prepared. Think back to the last time you traveled. Whether it’s at a gas station or the hotel, most of the time the only foods available are chips, cookies, and soda. By planning ahead, you won’t even be tempted by this junk food. You can travel with your own Keto crackers, chocolates, pork rinds, nut butter and nuts. If you have a cooler add some cheese, pepperoni and salami. That way you’ll never get caught with your Keto pants down! Intermittent Fasting. Fast between meals and boost your ketone production. It will hold you over on travel days in the car. It just makes travel simpler and increases your energy levels. You can always eat a large breakfast and then plan on having dinner at your destination later that night. Easy Peasy! Eating out. Restaurant dining is a key part of staying Keto. There were many weeks

K

we ate out nearly every day. Here are a few quick tips to help you have confidence while eating out. Always tell your waiter you have food allergies (rather than explaining the low carb/Keto thing. They will want to please you and keep you healthy): • Opt for double veggies instead of bread or potatoes • Choose water or straight spirits instead of beer and wine • Prioritize protein and fat before other foods • Ask for “lettuce wraps” instead of buns • Always ask for butter and olive oil • Get a side of avocado • Don’t be afraid to ask what ingredients are in foods or ask for substitutes What about Cheating? I allowed myself one or two meals a month to cheat and not exceed 75 carbs in one meal. I committed to getting right back on the Keto Train the next day and space it out for at least 2 weeks before I decided to have another cheat meal. It worked. For example, one evening Indian food was tempting me. I decided on the garlic naan bread, no rice, butter chicken and a spinach saag. It was satisfying and delicious and met my goals I set for myself. I got right back into ketosis the next day. A little preparation goes a long way when traveling. You won’t be thinking about food, it will become second nature when dining out, fasting or packing Keto friendly snacks. You will stick with your goals no matter where your travels take you. Keto On! CANNABIS CORNER

CANNABIS USE DISORDER

C

annabis use disorder (CUD) is a term used instead of cannabis abuse or addiction. According to the medical manual that codes diseases, CUD is a problematic pattern of cannabis use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by at least two of the following, occurring within a 12-month period: • Cannabis is often taken in larger amounts or over a longer period than was intended. There is a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control cannabis use. • A great deal of time is spent in activities necessary to obtain cannabis, use cannabis, or recover from its effects. • Craving, or a strong desire or urge to use cannabis. • Recurrent cannabis use results in failure to fulfill role obligations at work, school, or home. • Continued cannabis use despite having persistent or recurrent social or interpersonal problems caused or exacerbated by the effects of cannabis. • Important social, occupational, or recreational activities are given up or reduced because of cannabis use. • Recurrent cannabis use in situations in which it is physically hazardous. • Cannabis use continues despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or exacerbated by cannabis. • Tolerance, as defined by either: (1) a need for markedly increased cannabis to achieve intoxication or desired effect or (2) a markedly diminished effect with continued use of the same amount of the substance. • Withdrawal, as manifested by either (1) the characteristic withdrawal syndrome for cannabis or (2) cannabis is taken to relieve or avoid withdrawal symptoms. That’s a lot of criteria which injects a bias in diagnosing this disorder. A patient comes to the ER with symptoms of a stroke. The patient tells the physician he also smokes marijuana. The physician then concludes erroneously that cannabis causes strokes. Bias in scientific studies state in their hypothesis: “despite federal regulations cannabis is the most abused drug in the U.S.” As noted in a previous CV Weekly article 54 million people use cannabis in the U.S. almost as many people who smoke cigarettes. Where

BY RUTH HILL R.N.

are all these addicted cannabis users? How then do we treat this disorder with so many biases? It is not unusual to replace abuse of one drug with another pharmaceutical. Opioid addiction is treated with methadone. A published report in the July 2019 JAMA Internal Medicine, titled “Nabiximols for the Treatment of Cannabis Dependence: A Randomized Clinical Trial,” described an Australian study that probed the use of a standardized cannabis extract for treating cannabis dependence. The extract, called nabiximols (and marketed under the brand name Sativex), is an ethanol-based sublingual spray containing roughly equal parts THC and CBD, which has been approved for treating multiple sclerosis in many countries around the world. In another 2019 study, scientists at Harvard and Yale described their efforts to treat cannabis addiction with galantamine, a drug for Alzheimer’s dementia. After finding the treatment had no effect on cannabis addiction, they somehow assert that their data “support the feasibility of the administration of galantamine for individuals with CUD.” The results of both studies did not show the benefit use of the pharmaceutical. Neither did the studies show any discernable risk for cognitive damage with CUD. Cannabis craving is rarely as intense as heroin. Substituting cannabis for opioid alcohol or heroin addiction is well established. It doesn’t mean cannabis does not have a risk of abuse. The harm reduction in using cannabis as an exit drug is well established by statistics. The medical community will always try to treat CUD with a pharmaceutical. This is an oxymoron. Studies to treat CUD employ subjects that do not want to quit and omit discussing the harm associated with the pharmaceutical used to replace cannabis. Look at the list of adverse effects of galantamine. Would you want to replace your joint with this drug? One does not suffer the same effects of withdrawal as a person who is addicted to heroin opioids or alcohol. CUD shares the same types of behavior as addiction to gambling or eating. The abuse incidence is 9% compared with 40% for alcohol. Again, I ask. Where are all those addicted cannabis users? Ruth Hill - Direct any questions to hilruth@ gmail.com

FREEWILL ASTROLOGY

WEEK OF JANUARY 30

ARIES (March 21-April 19): My favorite ancient Greek philosopher was the rascal Diogenes. As a joke, he carried around a lantern during the daytime, proclaiming, “I am just looking for an honest man.” When Alexander the Great, the most powerful man in the world, came to meet Diogenes while he was relaxing outside and asked him if he needed any favors done, he replied, “Yeah, stop blocking my sunlight.” As for Plato, Diogenes complained that the famous philosopher talked too damn much and misinterpreted the teachings of Socrates. I encourage you to borrow some of Diogenes’ attitude in the coming weeks. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, it’ll be healing for you to experiment with being brassy, saucy, and sassy. Emphasize what makes you most unique, independent, and self-expressive. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Taurus author Anthony Trollope (1815–1882) published his first novel at age 30. During the next 37 years, he completed 48 additional novels and 18 works of nonfiction. Critics liked his work well enough, but were suspicious of his prodigious productivity. When they discovered that one of Trollope’s motivations for writing was to make money, they disapproved. Then they found out that Trollope kept a watch nearby as he worked, determined to generate 250 words every 15 minutes. The critics hated that even worse. Creative artists are supposed to court inspiration, not adhere to a schedule—at least according to the critics. But I approve of and recommend Trollope-like behavior for you in the coming weeks, Taurus. Cosmic forces will be on your side if you do. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In accordance with the astrological indicators, I invite you to rise and soar and glide during the coming weeks. I encourage you to expand and enlarge and amplify. Don’t wait around hoping to be asked to explore and experiment and improvise—just do those things. It’s high time for you to enjoy stirring quests and research projects and missions dedicated to discovery. Be a fun-loving pioneer. Sample the joys of being a maverick and outlier. CANCER (June 21-July 22): I love living in the material world. Its crazy-making demands and exhilarating rewards are endlessly entertaining. Despite having been born as a fantasy-prone, overly sensitive Cancerian, I’ve become fairly earthy and well-grounded. I have a good job, a nice house, a smart wife, and an interesting daughter. On the other hand, I also love living in the soul’s realm. I have remembered and recorded an average of three dreams per night for many years. Although I don’t take drugs, I cultivate alternate states of consciousness through meditation, prayer, and ritual. I’ve long been a student of depth psychology, which has trained me to be as focused on my soul as my ego. In accordance with current astrological omens, my fellow Cancerian, I urge you to hang out more than usual in the soul’s realm during the coming weeks. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Can I talk you into being more tender and open-hearted toward the people who care for you? I don’t mean to imply that you are currently too hard and closed. But all of us can benefit from enhancing our receptivity, and the coming weeks will be prime time for you Leos to do just that. I think you’ll find it easier than usual to deepen your listening skills and intensify your sensitivity. You’ll have an acute intuitive grasp of the fact that you can earn yourself huge blessings by expressing love and compassion in very practical ways. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): All of us are in service to someone or something—to certain people or ideas or situations. We provide them with help or energy or mirroring or love. We are dutiful in attending to their needs and wants. For some of us, our service feels like a burden. It’s grating or humbling or inconvenient, or all of the above. For others of us, being of service is fulfilling, even joyful. We find a rich sense of purpose in our devotion to a higher cause or deeper calling beyond our selfish

concerns. Among the 12 signs of the zodiac, you Virgos are more likely than most to carry out the latter kind of service. I bring these thoughts to your attention because the coming weeks will be an excellent time to re-evaluate, reconfigure, and reinvigorate your own service. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Author David Markson imagined what it would be like to write a novel that lacked conflicts or confrontations—in other words, a novel unlike any ever created. Libran author Ursula Le Guin also fantasized about stories with plots that weren’t driven by strife and struggle. Since many of us are addicted to entertainment that depends on discord to be interesting, we might find it hard to believe Markson’s and Le Guin’s dream would ever happen. But I’m pleased to inform you, Libra, that your life in the coming weeks may be exactly like that: a fascinating adventure with few hassles and wrangles. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): According to Scorpio painter Georgia O’Keeffe, success is irrelevant. The most crucial life-long effort that anyone can be devoted to is “making your unknown known.” Did she mean making your unknown known to yourself? Or making your unknown known to other people? Or both? According to my analysis of the astrological omens, the coming weeks will be a favorable time for you to do both. So I hope you will tease out your best and biggest mysteries from their hiding places. Give them expression. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You Sagittarians have a talent for burning bridges that really do need to be burned. Your intuition often guides you to assess when the time is ripe to withdraw from connections that no longer benefit you. On the other hand, you sometimes burn bridges prematurely. You decide that they are in such disrepair that they’re of no use to you, even though it might serve your ultimate interests to fix them. I offer these thoughts as a preface for my advice: 1. Refurbish rather than burn a certain bridge you’re a bit disenchanted with. 2. Build at least one new bridge that will be valuable in the future. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The shape of the planets’ orbits around the sun is elliptical, not circular. Capricorn astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571–1630) was the first person to figure this out. He didn’t like it. He really wanted the orbits to be circular. That would have been more satisfying to his aesthetic and spiritual sensibilities. Explaining the arduous labor he did to arrive at his conclusion, he wrote, “Take pity on me, for I have repeated these calculations seventy times.” In the big picture of our understanding of the universe, of course, his discovery was felicitous. It’s not a problem that the orbits are elliptical, merely the truth. In the coming weeks, Capricorn, I foresee you engaging in a process that’s metaphorically comparable to Kepler’s. Hard work will yield useful, if unexpected results. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Please don’t imitate or repeat yourself in the coming weeks. Refrain from relying on formulas that have worked for you before. Resolve to either ignore or rebel against your past as you dream up fresh gambits and adventures. Treat your whole life like an improvisatory game that has just one purpose: to attract and stir up useful novelty. If you do these things, Aquarius, I can practically guarantee that you will win the game. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Poet Robert Bly believes that each of us has a special genius, and the key to understanding and fully activating that genius is in our core wound. In other words, the part of us that got hurt the worst is potentially the generative source of the best gifts we have to give. Do you know where that is in yourself: the wound that could be the source of your blessing? Now is a great time to investigate this tantalizing mystery. Homework: Avoid the Tragic Magic Triad: taking things too personally, too literally, and too seriously.
