is the season to celebrate the heart -- the quintessential symbol of love and affection.

For centuries, this country and many others have fondly embraced Valentine’s Day as a cherished cultural tradition where we joyfully take the opportunity to express our admiration, appreciation and affection to those we hold dear.

When it comes to the heart, the American Heart Association (AHA) sees something beyond Cupid, cards and candy.

Heart disease kills nearly 500,000 women each year, more than all the cancers combined, yet only 10 percent of women are paying attention to the fact that cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women!

“The good news is that 80 percent of heart disease is preventable,” said Ellyse Lathrop, American Heart Association, Coachella Valley Division, Business Development Director. “Heart attacks and strokes are thought of as an issue mostly pertaining to middle-aged men. So it is important to reach Coachella Valley residents with ways to improve women’s health and help prevent heart disease and stroke.”

“Go Red for Women” is a social initiative started by the AHA in 2004 designed to empower women to take charge of their health. During the entire month of February, local chapters across the country highlight issues pertaining to women’s heart health, often wearing red to show support.

For the first time, the local AHA chapter “Go Red for Women” will have a male chairperson. David Herrlinger, Vice President of Hot Purple Energy will take the reins following Cari Sudmeier, Nurse Practitioner for Women’s Health, Eisenhower Medical

Center.

“As the incoming chairperson, I’m in a unique position to get guys to focus on the number one killer of women,” said Herrlinger. “We are asking men to talk to the women in their lives -- mothers, sisters, daughters and wives about heart health. Of course, we’ll continue with the traditional focus of generating awareness, but men Going Red for Women is my new charge.”

AHA is the largest volunteer run organization in the nation. Herrlinger is in the process of selecting his committee.

“We are so excited to have David on board,” said Lathrop. “He’s a very wellliked and well-connected individual in our community. I think he will be able to energize our mission and spread awareness through his extensive Coachella Valley network.”

Local business Hot Purple Energy has sponsored the AHA fundraising event “National Wear Red Day” for the last three years.

Every February, HPE illuminates their office building in red and changes their purple “E” logos to red hearts. For years, the company has donated $250 to the local AHA, in the names of those providing solar referrals. During the year, they provide “Go Red For Women” health information at the many events they sponsor throughout the CV. “Together with David Herrlinger and Hot Purple Energy we are trying to create an overall healthier Coachella Valley,” said Lathrop. “As a company, they are trying to create a sustainable environment as well as create and sustain good health and quality living in the CV. That’s why our partnership works really well.”

The AHA and HPE indeed intersect when it comes to building and communicating a healthy and sustainable environment.

“As men bring awareness to women’s heart issues, it should circle back,” said Herrlinger. “It’s often easier to ask someone else to take care of themselves before you focus on your own health. That happens a lot with women as well. Women usually care for others before themselves.”

Herrlinger’s goal is to see how many lives he can actually reach culminating in a celebration at the 2018 Go Red for Women Luncheon. He believes that with a sustained effort throughout the year in terms of personal attention to fitness, health and diet, it can become part of the community’s collective lifestyle mantra.

“The number one thing is to be active.

But, it’s not always easy. Prevention takes effort. You can’t just take a pill and be done,” said Herrlinger. “My hope is to create a larger circle with more people talking and having more exciting ways to engage with people.

“I believe we will have a real and measureable impact. It’s a daily commitment you have to make. That’s why the outreach and awareness programs, seminars and email reminders are important. We are here, the American Heart Association is here, and we are all looking out for one another.

Together, I believe we can diminish and lower the rate of heart disease and stroke.”

Herrlinger wants to hijack Valentine’s Day. “What it’s really about is the heart. So, if you love someone, talk about heart health.”

COMIC CON PALM SPRINGS RETURNS TO THE PALM SPRINGS CONVENTION CENTER

T

he second annual Comic Con Palm Springs has been announced and will be occurring August 25-27, 2017 and according to creator Christopher Spellman, it is going to be bigger and better than last year’s already impressive event.

After the success of the last year’s event, with 15,000 people in attendance according to the website, this year will include even more exhibits and attractions. Spellman is committed to expanding the event each year, saying, “We’re going to make it bigger and better and more exciting while maintaining the integrity that fans expect.” Prominent writer and former president and chairman of Marvel Comics, Stan Lee, who cut the ribbon to initiate the event last year, will once again be in attendance. Spellman is confident that this year, the event will be even more successful since “many more people are now

aware of it [and] excited earlier because of what we accomplished last year and trust that we’ll produce an A-level comic con for the attendees.”

This year’s featured guest at Comic Con Palm Springs is actor and comedian Tom Kenny, most notably known for voicing the character SpongeBob SquarePants.

Other special guests include voice actress Dana Gaier of Despicable Me; voice actress Veronica Taylor of Pokemon; and comic illustrators Katie Cook and Catt Staggs, among many others. Returning events include CCPS Symphony Pop Live ’17, CCPS Downtown Palm Springs’ Zombie Walk, Escape Room Zombie Maze, Geek Speed Dating, Lego Exhibit Room, Arcade Expo, VR Lounge, CCPS Costume Contest with $1,000 Grand Prize and the Geek Film Fest. As for what has changed since last year, Spellman says, “We have more experiences for people to have fun for three days… maybe they won’t be able to do it all, which is customary,” adding that there are “two nights of parties, one with performances by bands,” which includes a band fronted

by Tom Kenny. New attractions include a Zombie Café; Weaponry from Pirates of the Caribbean, hosted by Sean Rich of Pawn Stars; CCPS Fashion Show featuring Christopher Straub of Project Runway; and CCPS KidsCon, with more events being planned.

located just two miles from the Palm Springs International airport and walking distance from the Renaissance Palm Springs Hotel, which is offering room specials in association with the event. The Riviera Palm Springs is also offering room specials. According to Spellman, Comic Con Palm Springs had the most attendees of any event hosted at the Palm Springs Convention Center last year.

Spellman believed that Palm Springs would be the ideal venue for the event because he sees the community thriving, saying, “We’ve grown into a full-fledged city in our valley… very entertainment driven… growing with families… Palm Springs has become a large home for people, when I see the growth of Las Vegas, it reminds me of that.” He goes on to say, “Locally, it’s just great to work with great people… the whole city and the valley… helped support this.” The attention gained by the event wasn’t only from local residents. “We’re drawing a lot of people here,” Spellman says, “we had people coming in from almost every state. He notes that New York was third on a list of states that fans traveled from, with some attendees coming from as far as Canada and London, according

alm Springs Cruisin’ Association’s (PSCA) 15th Annual Dr. George Car Show takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Saturday, February 11, 2017. This show is one of the largest one-day car events in California and the oldest car show in the Coachella Valley. This year the show will feature over 1,000 vehicles displayed on over 20 plus acres. As the main annual fundraising event held by PSCA, Desert Cancer Foundation receives 100 percent of the proceeds.

Vehicles are represented from such states as California, Oregon, Arizona, Washington and New Mexico and include classic cars, muscle cars, hot rods, street rods, antiques, restored and original collectable cars, trucks

and motorcycles. Some of the custom cars are worth over $100,000. The event includes a beer garden, live entertainment, and nearly 80 vendors offering food, clothing, and a variety of car related items, plus a silent auction and raffles.

Awards will be presented at 2 p.m. with categories of Top 40, these are cars selected by people who have sponsored trophies in memory of loved ones; Celebrity Pick, selected by actors Alan Grant (a famous racecar driver for Shelby, and notably a main character in Jurassic Park), Chad McQueen (Steve McQueen’s son, played roles in Karate Kid and others), and Mark Perlberg (host of The Sunday drive which airs on NBC); and Best of Show judged by the PSCA club members.

Each dollar donated to Desert Cancer Foundation translates into over $10 of cancer treatment.

“Since the show started in 2002 with

about 30 cars on display, this tremendous event has gained so much in popularity that we now have to limit the number of cars to accommodate them all,” said Tim Smartt, club member, who has been with the show since its inception. “We are grateful for all of the people that make it a huge success including our numerous returning and new volunteers, along with the many participants and attendees. It is an honor to support Desert Cancer Foundation and honor Dr. George for co-founding such a worthy organization, with this amazing event.”

The cost of admission is a requested donation of any amount. The cost to register a vehicle for show is $40.

alm Springs Vinyl Records and Collectibles and Demonic Pinfestation have teamed up to present MOVIE MACABRE, a once at month FREE movie night showcasing horror and cult classic pictures in vintage 16mm film format at Bart Lounge located at 67555 E. Palm Canyon Drive. The second film presentation featuring William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist” is on Wednesday, February 15th, 2017 at 7:30pm.

For nearly a decade feature movies were presented on 16mm film and only in the last ten years has the movie industry converted to digital presentations, with only a handful of theaters still utilizing film. Like the vinyl record, rare film has a purity and quality to it that is quite pleasing and it is a visual treat to see a Technicolor print, CinemaScope print, or an original black and white classic in its original format.

“We have a pretty significant archive of original film prints, rare features, shorts, and trailers,” says David Bernal, owner of Palm Springs Vinyl Records and Collectibles. “Each film presentation features a classic short or trailer with the feature film usually running on two or three reels.” In addition to the monthly vintage film presentation at Bart Lounge, Demonic Pinfestation will display and sell their enamel lapel pins at their Pop-Up Shop.

When young Regan (Linda Blair) starts acting odd -- levitating, speaking in tongues -- her worried mother (Ellen Burstyn) seeks medical help, only to hit a dead end. A local priest (Jason Miller), however, thinks the girl may be

seized by the devil. The priest makes a request to perform an exorcism, and the church sends in an expert (Max von Sydow) to help with the difficult job. ational recording artist/ saxophonist Will Donato will perform at The Walk to End Alzheimer’s Coachella Valley 2017 on Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Palm Desert Civic Center Park.

Donato has performed at the Walk for the past several years as a tribute to his mother who had Alzheimer’s disease, and in support of the Alzheimer’s Association that provides support and care for Coachella Valley residents, families and caregivers.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s opens with registration at 8 a.m. Opening ceremonies start at 9 a.m. and the Walk gets underway at 9:30 a.m. on a clearly marked course throughout the park, returning to the amphitheater where a health fair and closing festivities take place. The Delgado Band, a popular local group that plays hits from the 60’s to current as well as Latin music, will also perform at the day’s festivities. The band has performed at the Walk for several years. Lead guitarist and singer Guillermo Delgado is the Latin music minister at St. Francis of Assisi, and is also a program specialist for family caregivers through the Riverside County Office on Aging.

Donato will perform at approximately 10:30 a.m. when walkers return and the silent auction and prize drawings conclude at the amphitheater. Donato is an awardwinning composer whose 2014 CD release, Universal Groove, is his fifth solo CD release on Innervision Records. His current hit radio single, “JAY WALKIN,” produced by Steve Oliver, is on the Billboard Chart Top 30.

Donato has performed with some of the best-known musicians of the genre, namely Al McKay of Earth Wind and Fire, Bruce Conte of Tower of Power, Ricky Lawson Musical Director for Michael Jackson, Steve Reid of The Rippingtons, Steve Oliver, Greg Karukas, Nick Colionne. He also fronted Steve Reid’s Bamboo Forrest for four years.

irlFriend Factor, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women reach their potential and achieve their goals through higher education and occupational training, will hold its annual “Club Cabana: Unleashed & Uncorked!” from 6 to 10 p.m. on Feb. 17, at Toscana Country Club in Indian Wells.

The tropical event celebrates professional men from within the community who support the mission of GirlFriend Factor and are affectionately called “Cabana Boys.” Margaritaville style music sets the tone during the cocktail hour, followed by a buffet dinner before launching into the highly anticipated live Uncorked Auction of packages assembled by this year’s Cabana Boys that include unique collections of prizes, such as hotel stays, concert passes, dinner parties, golf, wine, and more. COMEDY ICON DANA CARVEY EVENTS IS COMING TO FANTASY SPRINGS

mmy Award-winner, Saturday Night Live alumni, and celebrated funny man Dana Carvey has been a part of the fabric of American comedy since the mid-80’s and now he’s set to have audiences roaring with laughter at The Special Events Center at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino on Friday, March 24th.

Dana Carvey rose to fame during a six-year stint on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, in which he played several fan-favorite characters including “Church Lady,” “Garth” and “Hans,” as well as spot-on impersonations of President George H.W. Bush, Johnny Carson, Ross Perot and Regis Philbin. Carvey’s work on SNL earned him six Emmy Award nominations, including a 1993 Award for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program. He also received numerous American Comedy Awards and an MTV Movie Award for Best On-Screen Duo for his performance in Wayne’s World. In addition to SNL, Carvey has appeared on The Larry Sanders Show, Just Shoot Me!, The Fairly OddParents, and his self-titled 1996 series, The Dana Carvey Show, which also featured fellow comedians Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert, as well as SNL writer Robert Smigel.

On the big screen, Carvey memorably starred in Wayne’s World, Wayne’s World 2 and The Road to Wellville. He also contributed his

AMSTERDAM CONNECTION AT JAZZ AT THE MANSION, 420 FRIENDLY PARTY

I

interviewed this talented couple this morning at their home in Amsterdam over FB Messenger on my phone while they were making dinner. Naomi Adriaansz (tenor saxophone) and Tim Welvaars a jazz harmonica player are Amsterdam Connection. Their new CD (second for the duo) produced by multi-Grammy Award winning Paul Brown (he earned an impressive string of 70+ number one hits), is about to be released. Amsterdam Connection has just finished the recording of their new upcoming album, called Isn’t She Lovely A Tribute to Stevie Wonder (Tim performed with Stevie one time) It’s a full album of 10 instrumental Stevie Wonder songs, in a very soulful smooth jazz sound.

It features some of the best American musicians of the scene, including bass legend Nathan East, smooth jazz guitarist Paul Brown, jazz fusion guitarist Marc Antoine and Jessy J on flute.

Tim Welvaars (Amsterdam/Holland) has played and recorded with Stevie Wonder, Toots Thielemans, Kenny Burrell, Jose Feliciano, Ray Brown, Mel Lewis, Lee Ritenour, Jan Akkerman, The London Symphonic Orchestra, The Metropole Orchestra and many others.

As Toots Thielemans’ first and only student, Tim is continuously passing on his skill, as well as his love for music in general and the chromatic harmonica in particular.

Tim has had the honor of replacing both Toots Thielemans and Stevie Wonder in the studio, as well as being the only (other) harmonica player to be featured at Toots’ 75th birthday concert.

As an artist, Tim has recorded 28 solo CDs, and is featured as a soloist on over 300 CDs. Besides chromatic harmonica, Tim plays saxophone and piano and is an active composer, arranger, conductor and producer.

Naomi is frequently asked, (inter) nationally featured, saxophonist, playing

jazz as well as blues, funk and pop music.

She’s shared the stage with some of the best jazz and blues artists in Holland and the United States, like Candy Dulfer, Leroy Jones (USA, Harry Conick Bigband), TK Blue (USA, Randy Weston African Rhtyhm Sextet), Paul Brown (Luther Vandross, All Jarreau), Roberto Vally (Randy Crawford, Spyro Gyra), Chazzy Green (USA, Brothers Johnson, Johnny Guitar Watson), Bruce James and Bella Black (USA, James and Black Soultet), Frits Landesbergen etc.

Besides all that, Naomi has played for 8 years in one of the biggest entertainment parks in Europe. She is also an appreciated organizer. She organizes an educational jazz program for primary school pupils and a small jazz festival in Breda (NL).

ey You! Don’t watch that, watch this/This is the heavy, heavy monster sound, the nuttiest sound around…”

If you came of age in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, well, shit, you’re old. But you are probably thoroughly familiar with the lyrics quoted above and are currently repeating the rest in your head.

Undoubtedly for you, that era feels like it happened five minutes ago. A more optimistic time, Punk Rock morphed into the more homogenized New Wave. Dayglo colors were de riguer, shirt collars were popped, Bermuda shorts were in and MTV was just beginning world domination.

For most Suburban teens, MTV exposed them to music they never would have heard on their local Top 40 stations. Some of the acts they broke continue to remain relevant today, (U2, Prince, Peter Gabriel, Madonna), some reigned supreme and were quickly forgotten (Kajagoogoo, Quiet Riot, Michael Sembello). But there are some songs that remain iconic. Duran, Duran’s “Hungry Like The Wolf,” Wall Of Voodoo’s “Mexican Radio,” Thomas Dolby’s “She Blinded Me With Science,” and “Our House” from Madness.

Madness, along with English Beat, the Specials, and The Selecter, first spearheaded the 2Tone sound. A fusion of Jamaican Ska, Reggae and Punk Rock, the music was socially conscious and extremely danceable. The band broke through in America but remain massively popular in Great Britain.

The core of the band, guitarist Chris Forman, Mike Barson on vocals and keys and Lee Thompson on saxophone and vocals formed over 40 years ago in Camden Town, London as the North London Invaders. The trio recruited Cathal Smyth (ne’ Chas Smash) on trumpet and acoustic guitar, Graham “Suggs” McPherson on lead vocals, drummer Daniel Woodgate and bassist Mark Bedford They briefly became the Morris Minors, before settling on Madness, after a favorite song from Ska pioneer Prince Buster.

By 1979 they had attracted a large local following, gigging around Camden Town. They recorded their first single, “The Prince,” as an homage to Prince Buster. The song was released on the 2Tone label and the seven-piece toured with other 2Tone artists, the Speicals and the Selecter.

Their song was a surprise hit, peaking at #16 on the U.K. charts. Madness gained further exposure with a performance on the BBC series, “Top Of The Pops.” Soon after, they signed a deal with Stiff Records, home to Nick Lowe, the Damned and Elvis Costello.

Their debut, One Step Beyond, arrived in October and featured two Prince Buster covers, the title track, and of course, “Madness,” plus a

surfeit of originals that strayed from the Ska-Punk paradigm, incorporating Motown, Pop, Northern Soul and English Music Hall music into their sound.

Equally compelling was the septet’s anarchic sense of humor. The band’s sheer nuttiness propelled them to #2 on the UK charts.

Madness hit the same chart position a year later with their sophomore release, Absolutely.

Propelled by hit singles like “Baggy Trousers” and “Embarrassment,” even the instrumental “The Return Of The Las Palmas Seven” climbed to number seven on the singles chart. Their third effort, 7, cemented their position, along with the Jam, as England’s biggest hit-makers. In America, a couple of songs from their debut had received airplay on MTV, but their goal was world domination.

For their fourth album, The Rise & Fall, Madness continued to collaborate with producers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, the duo had been with them since the beginning. Released in 1982, Rise… was something of a concept album about nostalgia and childhood; it also contained some astute social commentary.

This time out they integrated hints of Jazz and Middle Eastern influences. But the album’s secret weapon was “Our House,” an irresistible slice of life, it’s exuberant style a mash up of Ska and traditional Music Hall. The lyrics, a clever, slightly smart-ass trip down memory lane, laced with humor and pathos in equal doses.

The song made it to #5 in the UK and #7 in the U.S. Geffen, Madness’ American label capitalized on the single’s popularity by releasing a self-titled compilation that cherry-picked tracks from all four British LPs. The strategy worked, the album cracked the Top 200 and introduced their music to a wider audience.

The band released two more albums with the original line-up, Keep Moving in 1984, Mad Not Mad in 1985. Mike Barson quit the band in the midst of the Keep Moving recording sessions. He returned in 1986 for a farewell single and tour. After the band officially broke up, some members soldiered on as The Madness and recorded an eponymous effort in 1988.

In 1992 the band was persuaded to reunite when a greatest hits collection topped the charts.

They would reconvene sporadically throughout the ‘90s, finally they recorded their eighth album, Wonderful. Released at the turn of the 20th century, it reached #17 on the U.K. charts, a respectable showing for a band that had their first hit 20 years before.

The low-key Dangerman Sessions arrived in 2005 and four years later their 10th studio album, The Liberty Of Norton Fulgate was released to coincide with the 30th anniversary of their 1979 debut. Their 2012 record, Oui Oui, Si Si, Ja Ja, Da Da preceded two major milestones for Great Britain: the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 London Olympics. Madness was invited to perform at both events. It was a bit of a Victory lap for the band, but rather than rest on their laurels, they’ve returned with Can’t Touch Us Now. The title track gets the record off to a rousing start as bee-stung guitar riffs layer over plinky piano, insistent sax notes and a stutter-step rhythm.

The melody is a heady brew of Northern Soul and Music Hall that ebbs and flows. Initially, the lyrics seem fairly straightforward, presenting two lovers at the precipice of commitment. But dig a little deeper and they feel like a metaphor for religious or political conviction. The instrumentation veers from sweet to fractious, emphasizing the song’s duality.

After 40 years, this band really has nothing to prove. So it’s kind of wonderful to report that this is probably their most concise and cohesive

collection of songs to date. Several tracks offer up their trademark of barbed social commentary and danceable grooves.

The soulful shimmy of “Good Times” is propelled by sinewy sax and swiveling rhythms that belie stern lyrics which preach asceticism over rampant consumerism. Social hypocrisy is on trial on the exuberant “Mr. Apples.” Anchored by knockabout percussion, jaunty piano runs and brass that honks and wails, the lyrics paint a vivid portrait of a wellrespected man; “Head of the table at the Rotary Club, never unsure of which shoulders to rub/Scout leader, a pillar of the church, capital punishment he wants to bring back the birch.” But at night it’s another story, the lyrics reveal cavorts with ladies of the evening. A stinging guitar solo underscores his rank duplicity.

Politics and religion are the targets on “Mumbo Jumbo” and “I Believe.” Over an fun-house melody that boings and pulsates, incorporating bloopy organ notes, jews-harp, trombone, banjo and hopscotch back-beat, the former seems ripped from the headlines.

Not only do the lyrics denounce Brexit; “You propagate the notion that pigs will fly, social services stretched to a pie in the sky,” they also cleverly hint at the return of Thatcherism; “stoke a little fear back down on Maggie’s Farm.” They even take a moment to excoriate Donald Trump; “You promised us a pudding but never the proof, a cathedral of deceit to sodomize the truth/The masses are rejecting and showing you the door, their peaceful demonstration is past the point to ignore.”

The latter blends call-and-response vocals and rippling Reggae Riddims that nearly camouflage a trenchant commentary on organized religion.

The rollicking combo of piano, Wurlitzer and harpsichord leavens this withering critique; “I decide whom I confide, and you just failed the test/ Release your hands from my beliefs, I no longer need your guiding.”

Much like the Kinks, Madness songs have always exhibited a keen observational style. That tradition continues on songs like “Blackbird,” “Pam The Hawk,” and “You Are My Everything,” each one unspools like a short story.

On “Blackbird” ambient traffic noise and rain is supplanted by Suggs’ spoken-word intro as he vividly describes a case of instant attraction. “She’s striding through puddles, on black stiletto heels, guitar over one shoulder/Swirling swagger in her stride, and a well-appointed pencil skirt maybe 18 inches wide.”

The melody and instrumentation is initially MerseyBeat smooth, but quickly accelerates as attraction piques. Soon a mellotron, brass and a Gospel choir all chime in.

The bellicose noise of slot machines and jingling change greet the listener on the bleak “Pam The Hawk.” A brittle tale of a streetwalker who gambles away her profits on games of chance. “She’d be the richest woman in all of the West End they’d

say, if every single penny earned she didn’t spend in the bookies, on the horses, the Wardour Street arcade/There isn’t a single fruit machine she hasn’t played.” A dour little torch song her tale of woe is accentuated by a mournful sax solo, Jazzy acoustic guitar and a sweeping horn section.

Finally, “You Are My Everything” is Superfly perfection. Wah-wah guitars snake through shaker percussion, tinkling glockenspiel and a string section in a seductive arrangement that would make Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield and Barry White collectively weep. The lyrics spin a series of scenarios that pledge undying love. “If there ever comes a day if you walk out the door and leave it all behind, I won’t hold back and try to make you stay/I know I said I don’t mind, in truth I’d rather go blind, you are my everything.”

On an album that feels front-loaded with hits, three songs stand out from the pack. The melody of “Another Version Of Me” feels like a relax-fit sequel to “Our House.” Spiralling piano notes collide with blustery sax and a slinky backbeat. The lyrics limn the foibles of family life without ever breaking a sweat.

“Grand Slam” is a Spaghetti Western/Reggae pastiche that blends bongo-riffic rhythms, spaceage synths, syncopated brass and plonky piano.

The lyrics take aim at a self-satisfied alpha-male; “Grand slam, is he the man? Relentless turbocharged homo sapien.” It’s never made explicit, but the specimen in question probably has small hands, stubby fingers and an orange comb-over.

Finally, “Herbert” is quintessential Madness. A fizzy synthesis of Ska and Music Hall, it’s by turns, convivial, risqué and wildly irresistible. Over Carnival keys, a clickity-clack rhythm and kaleidoscopic horns, Suggs unravels a shaggy dog shagging story involving covert coitus in a bathroom stall.

Other interesting tracks include the urgent life-lessons of “Don’t Leave The Past Behind,” the skanking cynicism of “Given The Opportunity,” the percolating soulshine of “(Don’t Let Them) Catch You Crying,” and the querulous Funk of “Soul Denying.” The album closes with the see-saw jabberwocky of “Whistle In The Dark.”

In a nice bit of symmetry, the album is coproduced by Clive Langer, along with Liam Watson, Charlie Andrew and the band. Langer was on hand for their debut, and has handled production chores for eight other Madness records.

Despite the fact that the members of Madness are all nearly eligible for the British equivalent Social Security, they still manage to keep their Ska-Punk formula feeling fresh. To paraphrase the Pretenders, they’ve got rhythm, can’t miss a beat, got new skank, so reet. Sure, the ‘80s are long gone, MTV is home to reality television, and your pastel Bermuda shorts are probably too tight around the waist. But thankfully, Madness is here to stay.

TO EVERYTHING THERE IS A PURPOSE: THE REPURPOSED ART OF CHRISTOPHER JAMES

A

rt has always enjoyed a relationship with recycling of material. To me, the art of up-cycling is intriguing.

My jewelry line incorporates up-cycling by using something old or unwanted in a new way. To turn an unwanted item into something new is a challenge but the master of up-cycling is Christopher James.

Christopher has roots in the Coachella Valley and works out of his High Desert studio. This self-taught artist was born in Florida and his childhood was spent traveling the country. Exposure to the diversity of people, landscapes and animals, fueled Chris’ imagination. His artwork truly shows the depth of that imagination.

Scouring the desert for discarded metal, Chris takes these cast-off pieces and creates imaginative to practical works of art. As razor wire becomes a nest for a griffon or a metal wheel transforms into a man with a mission, it is hard to remember the origins of the material. The medium is transformed into something that is often magical and whimsical but always with heart. It happens

because Chris sees the material in away few ever would. He sees its true beauty.

ruce Kimerer moved to the California desert from New York nearly five years ago. Previously, his work focused on the landscape, portraying moody views of the Brooklyn waterfront and the rolling hills of rural upstate New York.

Once here, his work changed dramatically.

Gone were the misty atmospheres and soft edges replaced by a brightness and clarity, a direct response to the light, the color, and the geometry of the Palm Springs environment. “plain air,” his solo exhibition of recent paintings opens Friday, February 10, from 5-7pm at the Simeon Den Gallery in the Perez Road Art and Design District.

His paintings uniquely reference the minimalism of the Zen aesthetic and the

“en plein air” style but with a distinctly American twist—his spare compositions depict the motifs of the American desert and particularly emblematic of the Palm Springs resort lifestyle. It could be said that they are visual haikus.

“I paint for myself,” he admits. “Each piece is a test, of sorts, to see if I can render the quotidian, commonplace scenes around me in a way that captures an essential element of air, light, and matter.”

Kimerer has exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York as well as gallery venues in Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Coachella Valley. “plain air” will be on view at Simeon Den Gallery through March 5th and available online at simeondengallery.com.

I am hoping that my work inspires others to think about the environment. By giving these cast-offs a second life, I give life to my work. I also take a piece of what some consider trash and I leave a piece of the earth less polluted,” said Christopher.

But Christopher’s work is not just about repurposing discarded steel. It is about the unbridled power that Art can have over a person. Chris, by creating work from metal destined for the junkyard, proves that Art is far more than paintings on a wall. His sculptures have a universal appeal but the work in not trite. His creatures have a backstory that beckons the viewer.

ANNUAL HOME TOUR OF HISTORIC BY SIMEON DEN AND ARTISTS’ HOMES IN THE CATHEDRAL CITY COVE

T

here is a lost history being uncovered of the artist’s colony in the Cathedral City Cove, where in the 1930’s through the early 60’s, a small group of nationally renowned painters, musicians, and writers came to live seasonally and permanently to make art. The Agnes Pelton Society has been instrumental in uncovering that history and their upcoming annual Home Tour of Historic and Artists’ Homes in the Cathedral City Cove celebrates it. It particularly commemorates the 70th anniversary of when Agnes Pelton and her contemporaries first used her Cove home as a makeshift art gallery.

Agnes Pelton was the American modernist painter, who was one of the few women that exhibited in the iconic New York Armory Show of 1913. It was the influential art exhibition that introduced America to the likes of Picasso, Kandinsky, and Duchamps, which changed the course of American artmaking, and first established Pelton’s reputation in the art world.

Pelton travelled widely, building her stature at the forefront of the Transcendental style and in 1932 settled in the Cathedral City Cove. There, she designed and built a home studio, where she lived and panted for over two decades. She became known locally for her decorative desert paintings of smoke trees and dates, and continued to gain national prominence for her modern abstract masterworks. It is there in her Cove home that Pelton and her contemporaries began showing their work. After two years they opened a storefront on Highway 111, which was the first art gallery in Cathedral City and was the geneses of the Desert Art Center, that still exists today in Palm Springs.

To fund the opening of the gallery, Pelton donated her painting, “Smoke Tree In Bloom.”

Recently, Peter Palladino, who now owns her historic home, tracked down “Smoke Tree In Bloom” at auction and brought it back to be displayed where it was originally shown in Pelton’s house. Palladino has been collecting original works of Pelton, as well as the paintings of her contemporaries of that era and has brought them all “back home,” where they were originally exhibited.

The Home Tour includes the house of Val Samuelson, another Cathedral City resident, who gained a national reputation for his desert paintings, and the home studios of fourteen other working artists in the Cove; and five other homes with historic significance.

The Agnes Pelton Society was named Non-Profit of the Year by the Cathedral City Chamber of Commerce and ticket sales and support from the City of Cathedral City attends to their mission statement, which is to sustain the legacy of Agnes Pelton, be an advocate for local artists, and provide free arts education opportunities for children.

amazing and dedicated couple. Leigh is in the process of applying to UC Davis’ School of Veterinary Medicine to become a DVM. If successful, she will focus on low cost spay and neuter surgery. Leigh explains, “The solution to this overwhelming problem is the capacity to do more spay and neutering in our Valley when so many of our low income residents simply cannot afford it.”

Rescuing animals is a labor of love. David and Leigh Kirk are blessed to be working as a team on this effort, where each of

alentine’s Day is all about love, and that includes the love that we share with our 4-legged family members. One amazing Coachella Valley couple, David and Leigh Kirk, are bonded by their love of feline creatures and their commitment to saving them. They are the founders and operators of ForeverMeow cat rescue, a charity that saves the lives of and adopts countless homeless cats and kittens.

The couple met by chance and fell in love while working in Washington D.C. David was an ardent dog lover who never owned a cat until he met Leigh and her amazing cat named Poodie. David was quick to fall in love with Leigh. He also fell in love with cats by living with Poodie, a special feline Leigh rescued as a tiny feral kitten from the D.C. streets.

In 2005, the Kirks moved to the Coachella Valley, and Leigh began volunteering at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus, our county shelter. Like most animal lovers, she had no idea that the vast majority of cats in America’s public shelters never make it out alive. The Kirks were distressed to learn that the live release rate for cats at our

shelter was only 20%, and that in one recent year over 1,000 underage kittens were euthanized. They realized they could save some of them by forming their own 501(c)3 charity, and ForeverMeow was launched.

In 2014, David applied his skills acquired as an executive in the Silicon Valley computer industry to develop power point presentations about the crisis facing our homeless dogs and cats in our county shelter system.

The couple attended Best Friends’ “No More Homeless Pets” conferences, conducted more research, becoming experts on TNR (Trap/Neuter/ Return) for community cats. They assumed a leadership role as animal advocates and animal welfare groups banded together in the hopes of one day creating a “No Kill Coachella Valley”.

In 2015, the Kirks added a kitten nursery, one of less than a dozen in the entire country, to their rescue operation. The couple partnered with Riverside County Department of Animal Services to save almost 700 cats and kittens from euthanasia, often accompanying animal control officers in the field to pick up animals. Feeding and medicating tiny underage kittens means long 18-hour days, and the couple fights to save every frail tiny creature.

As their rescue efforts expanded, David realized, “By early that year, we realized that we had jumped right into the deep end, and the tsunami that is the Coachella Valley kitten season was crashing around us. As much as we’d researched, planned, and visited other kitten nurseries and connected with neo-natal experts, here we were in this thing together, and not sure at all if we could swim. But that’s us – when we discover shared passion, decisions of the heart overrule the fears. We continue rescuing cats because life without that shared, burning passion would be less than complete.”

RED ROSÉS FOR A LOVELY LADY

H

appy St. Valentine’s Day to you all!

And as you would expect, I write to you bringing some readily available rosés for the romantic quaffs you lovely ladies deserve! Cheers to you!

Of course, although I couldn’t resist the play in the above title (hey—after writing varied valentines articles with clever titles these past few years, I’m running a bit thin), one may think twice and ask: “Aren’t rosés pink?! Isn’t a “red rosé” simply a red wine?!

Okay—okay, hold on there pardner. When was the last time you walked through the rosé aisle at your local wine shop. Sure you saw a slew of pinks, ranging from light bright copper to swishy shining salmon hues. Generally these are the tasty and lovely rosés from Provence in the south of France. And they are particularly very dry—nothing close to any sweetness here.

But did you not also see some labeled rosés that had a lot more oomph in color?

And rather full-on and bordering in the red zone? Quite often, these higher-end rosés are produced with new and old world, Syrah, Grenache, Pinot Noir and Tempranillo. Let’s consider them: Grenache Rosé: This style is fruity; ruby red hues with notes of ripe strawberry, orange, hibiscus and sometimes with a hint of allspice.

They have moderately high acidity, but since most have quite a bit of color and body, typically you’ll want to serve them cold to keep them zesty. The celebrity rosé of Brad Pitt and Angeline Jolie, the Miraval Rosé 2015, ($21) is a great example of the Grenache style.

(The buzz around town is that it will now be selling the wine in “splits”!—get it?)

Pinot Noir Rosé: This is delicately fruity.

Pinot Noir is always the “diva” about town.

It hates to grow with any type of extreme weather and is considered sensitive and temperamental, but when it’s on and at its best, can make for a very sexy glass of wine.

In rosé, Pinot Noir carries bright acidity and soft, subtle aromas of crabapple, watermelon, raspberries, strawberries, and wet stone. The grape can produce earthy, but elegant, wines that are cool, crisp, and dry. The Starmont 2015 Rosé of Pinot Noir (Carneros) is an example right up this alley.

Syrah Rosé: This is savory wine, i.e., aromatic and pungent. American Syrah rosé is typically made in the “Saignée Method’”— bleeding off the juice after limited contact with the skins, which usually means it will have deeper colors of ruby and notes of white pepper, green olive, strawberry and cherry.

Rosé of Syrah tend to be more on the bolder end of the spectrum and are best served slightly warmer than fridge temperatures in a regular red wine glass.

Tempranillo Rosé: This style too is savory.

Tempranillo rosé is growing in popularity from the Rioja region and other parts of Spain and Portugal. With this style, you can expect a pale pink hue and herbaceous notes of green peppercorn, watermelon, strawberry and perhaps some meaty notes. Many Tempranillo rosé from Spain also blend a bit of Graciano and Grenache to add floral notes to the flavor.

SEXY ROSÉ from the Sexy Wine Co. ($20) is a gourmet rosé that is a fusion of leading Portuguese and French varietals and produces a wine with considerable depth and complexity. It has a clear ruby-cherry color. The strawberry fragrance of Tempranillo combines with the floral notes of Touriga Nacional grape while the Syrah gives characteristic delicious juicy red fruit. The creamy texture on the pallet and a sensation of sweetness is perfectly balanced with a refreshing level of acidity. JACKALOPE RANCH AND THE CHOP HOUSE TO SHARE VALENTINE’S DAY MENU AT INDIO LOCATION ON FEBRUARY 14

J

ackalope Ranch, the popular barbecue restaurant in Indio, and The Chop House, newly relocated from Palm Springs, will share a special onenight-only menu to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, February 14, 2017.

“We want our guests to have the opportunity to try something from both menus on this special night,” said Lee Morcus of Kaiser Restaurant Group, which owns Jackalope Ranch and The Chop House.

“It gives us the chance to mix the fine dining options of The Chop House with the comfort food favorites of Jackalope’s menu. A crossover like this won’t happen very often.”

Although the two restaurants occupy the same building, The Chop House and Jackalope Ranch offer two diverse menus.

For Valentine’s Day only the special a la carte menu will offer the most popular items from both restaurants, from seafood, steaks and chops of The Chop House to the baby back ribs and BBQ chicken that Jackalope Ranch has built its reputation on.

In addition to seating in the beautiful, spacious dining rooms, seating will also be available under the stars on the Palapa, for those who prefer the twinkling lights of Mother Nature (and outdoor heaters for

warmth).

Appetizers on the menu include a Classic Caesar salad with white anchovies and house-made dressing and a Wedge Salad with apple wood smoked bacon and blue cheese dressing, both for $10. Other appetizers include the Heirloom Tomato and Burrata salad with extra virgin olive oil and 12-year-old balsamic vinegar reduction or Lobster Bisque, both $14; Seared Sea Scallops with a reduction of yellow curry,

coconut milk, lemongrass and ginger, $16; and four Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail with housemade cocktail sauce, $19.

Entrée offerings include Twin Lobster Tails ($59); Whole Branzino, sea bass imported from the Mediterranean ($38); Prime Double-Cut Tomahawk Pork Chop ($35); Half an organic Jidori chicken ($29); BBQ Half-Chicken ($26); 14 oz. Prime Rib ($45) (usually only offered on weekends!); and the BBQ Baby Back Ribs, at $22.50 for a half-rack or $32 for a full rack.

Dessert choices for the evening are a deliciously sinful Chocolate Cappuccino Mousse Cake or New York-style Cheesecake, at $10 each.

The single menu for both restaurants will be served from 4:30 p.m. through closing and reservations are recommended.

JACK MENDELSOHN 1926 – 2017

T

here is something very special about a man with a great sense of humor.

Add a high level of intelligence, artistic ability, kindness, generosity, and a full head of hair and you have a picture of the marvelous and talented Jack Mendelsohn.

If you grew up reading comic strips, comic books or watching cartoons, variety television or situation comedies, it is very likely that at some point you were exposed to the writing and sly humor of Mendelsohn. His career spanned over 70 years with credits that include EC Comics, MAD Magazine, “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In,” “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “The Steve Allen Show,” “The Carol Burnett Show,” “Three’s Company,” “Yellow Submarine,” and “Teenage Mutant Turtles” to name just a few on a long list.

Mendelsohn was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. During World War II, he left high school to join the Navy. Later, he entertained the troops as part of a USO Korean tour. He was an autodidact with broad knowledge. He was curious, open-minded, wise and easy-going.

Working as a cartoonist, Mendelsohn didn’t feel he had the same level of professionalism or inherent skill for drawing as the other artists. He said he would work on one drawing for days, whereas writing came naturally and quickly. He discovered that a lot of very talented cartoonists were “ill at ease” when it came to writing, so they turned to Mendelsohn to do the writing.

But the truth of the matter, whether Mendelsohn would agree or not, he could draw and he drew well. He was able to capture attitude, action and emotion in a quick sketch or detailed panel.

Mendelsohn was most well known for Jacky’s Diary, a Sunday cartoon published and globally syndicated in over 65 papers from 1959 to 1961. It still has a cult following today. With child-like illustrations, Jacky’s Diary age 9½ features a curious boy as he explores and misconstrues the crazy adult world that surrounds him. The simplistic drawings and subversive bits are a perfect combination of cartoon form and function, and a reflection of

Mendelsohn’s innocuous wit and love of word play.

Published in 2013, Jacky’s Diary at age 86 ½ (IDW Publishing, 192 pages) is a complete compilation of the original Sunday strip in an oversized, colorful, hardcover, coffee table book. The first 31 pages include a Forward by cartoonist Mort Walker age 90½ (Beetle Bailey) and a Backward by Mell Lazarus age 86 ½ (Mama). These cartooning giants are just a few of Mendelsohn’s incredibly talented colleagues.

The book has a well-illustrated brief history of Mendelsohn’s extensive career and the amazing and famous friends he met and worked with along the way. Well-written and filled with sly humor, the pages are meticulously laid out with great vintage photos, illustrations and reproductions from the era.

Declining an invitation to London, because he was too busy writing the Yellow Submarine screenplay, Mendelsohn never met the Beatles. He took a leave of absence from Hanna Barbera so he could fully commit to the animated feature film adaptation of Ringo’s whimsical tune.

Mendelsohn worked on the Beatles’ based short cartoons for television writing more than half of the series. The four-minute cartoons became the number one show on Saturday mornings.

Created from Beatle songs, Mendelsohn would “visualize the music” to build a story. He said, “Although it was a lot of work, it was also a lot of fun.”

Mendelsohn spent six years in Mexico in the 1950s. He wrote about his wild experiences and crazy encounters in a semi-autobiographical book called Montezuma’s Revenge. He also wrote the incredible, mostly unknown, truelife story of Pat Morita: The Dark Side of a Star.

His book, Funny for Money is a backstage look at show business over his 70 years in the industry. It includes witty stories from his experience working in animation, television, movies-of-the-week, feature films and variety shows. The anecdotes and first-hand stories are hugely entertaining and quite revealing about the nature of the “Hollywood” industry.

Truthful, but never mean spirited, Mendelsohn names names making the unpublished manuscript hard to put down.

Mendelsohn’s three books are pending publication. He liked to stay creative, busy and actively engaged. Mendelsohn wrote every day until he couldn’t.

Mendelsohn was the first to receive the

“Bill Finger Award” (co-creator of DC’s Batman) for his excellence in Comic Book Writing at Comic-Con San Diego. The Finger Award seeks out important cartoonists and writers who rarely received credit for their significant contributions.

Mendelsohn was most proud of being acknowledged and presented with the Writer’s Guild Lifetime Achievement Award for Animation Writing. Unlike today, writing for animation in the 60s and 70s was not considered “real writing” and animation writers were not protected by the Hollywood unions.

At 90, Mendelsohn was sharp and droll with incredible recall. The two sure things that made Mendelsohn laugh and smile were his beautiful wife Carole and his handsome, goofy cat Harpo.

Mendelsohn was a gifted writer and artist.

His writing style was fluid, easy and natural with intelligent insight and wit. He tapped into something fundamental about our human condition.

I was honored to read his manuscripts and grateful to know him. He was always encouraging and generous with his time and contacts. Mendelsohn highly valued his friends, family and the gift of life itself. Thank you for shaping my sense of humor and for all the great laughs. He is deeply missed.

VALENTINE GIFTS: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE AWFUL

eople will spend on average $130 for Valentine’s Day with nearly one quarter of a billion roses given away.

Two-thirds of all men will have given their partner’s roses while one-third of women will give their partner flowers.

Americans will spend nearly $20 billion on the Lover’s Holiday, with $4.5 billion spent on jewelry, $2 billion on flowers and $2 billion on candy. Six million people expect a marriage proposal this week while 85% of all people in relationships expect sex.

While flowers, chocolates, jewelry and romantic dinners are the easy go to gifts, offers.com recently completed a survey that found that 42% of all people would prefer to receive a vacation.

If your partner seems to have everything, consider giving a donation to their favorite charity or cause in their name.

KindNotes.com has a fun idea - a jar of 31 personalized notes for your one true love.

If you want to stay on good terms with your partner, stay away from these gifts: Unless you are buying this for yourself, stay away from costume jewelry. That includes cubic zirconia and imitation pearls. Sean Grew of BradsDeals.com says that “the worst Valentine’s gifts are cheap, terrible-looking knock-off gifts.”

Along those lines, stay away from novelty gifts of all kinds. Freelance writer Jill Harness

recommends strongly against buying Art de Toilette’s Chocolate Scale which is a scale packaged with chocolates. She also dislikes the Wrinkle Reducing Pillow, because few of us want to be reminded that we are adding wrinkles as we sleep. Brief Jerky Edible Meat Underwear is another gift that shows you are not exactly romantic.

Quentin Fottrell, author of Love in a Damp Climate, believes that appliances like vacuums and dust busters may lead to a house cleaning that includes you. Even a Dyson vacuum is an idea that you should stay away from.

While gift cards might be a good gift for teenagers, if you are not in high school or at university, you can do better. Howard Schaffer of offers.com says, “A gift card suggests that

HANDLING AN ACCIDENT CASE BY THE NUMBERS

S

uper Bowl drinking resulted in many alcohol related accidents. However an accident does not mean the insurance company will make a fair settlement offer.

You did not win the lottery because you were rear ended. Many potential clients do not understand why their case is not as valuable as their neighbors.

Follow these 12 steps and settle for more money.

1. Take cell phone pictures and video of both cars/ injuries and statements of all parties before they talk to their insurance company or lawyer and revise what happened.

2. Call the police even when there are no apparent injuries as the traffic accident report will provide information on all parties, witnesses and liability.

3. Do NOT give a statement without your lawyer’s permission as it is evidence. If the defendant is uninsured or lacks adequate insurance, your company will be responsible under UM/UIM and what you told them could come back to haunt you. Remember to ask the other driver for his driver’s license and Insurance info. Along these lines you should TAKE DOWN YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA. The insurance companies watch Facebook and Twitter posts which may show you playing sports or talking about a

vacation. This suggests you are OK and not getting medical treatment and that you are able to lift your luggage.

4. Get medical attention immediately, either by ambulance to the Hospital or Urgent Care. Some victims do not take an ambulance because they have to pick up their kids or are concerned about hospital and ambulance costs.

Otherwise the insurance company argues, if the victim was really injured s/he would have sought immediate medical treatment.

5. Do NOT give the hospital Medicare/ Medicaid information: Once Medicare/Medicaid is notified it takes 6-12 months to get them to respond to lien payment information. In addition there is a new law that the only medical bills the jury can consider are those not paid by insurance, Medicare/ Medicaid. If Eisenhower charges $50,000 and accepts $9,000 from Medicare with the patient responsible for $1,000 we can only submit $1,000 for the jury to consider.

Thus we may get settlement offers of less than $5,000.

6. Contacting a Lawyer immediately prevents the insurance company from contacting you for a statement. Your lawyer never knows what you said or what the investigator thought he heard you say.

For years I lectured on “How to Write a Medical/Legal Report” to the International College of Surgeons at their yearly conferences. The doctor’s report is almost as important as the injuries.

8. Go to your lawyer’s body shop not the Insurance Companies who gives a low estimate.

Adjusters argue if the property damage is low, then how could the victim be injured? The last thing a lawyer wants is for his client’s friend to repair the car cheaply.

9. You need high auto liability and UM/ UIM coverage because many drivers have no insurance or inadequate limits. IF that is the case we contact your carrier and make an uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage claim....even if you were walking or on a bike.

If you have a $100,000 policy and the D driver does not have any coverage a UM claim against your carrier can be made for up to $100,000.

Likewise if the defendant has a $15k policy we can collect that amount from the other carrier and then make a claim against your $100,000 UM coverage.

10. Be sure you have Medical Payments coverage because no matter who is at fault you can present a claim under the med pay section of your policy for up to that amount of money

I have had cases where my client refused to go to trial because of fear of what would be in the med report: an abortion they did not tell their husband about; illegal drugs listed in med report; their treatment with a psych and or an affair with another person and a venereal disease.

12. Do not sign anything as it could be a release...or an authorization to obtain your medical records. Do not trust the adjuster who says if you have further problems they will take care of it.

SPORTS SCENE WHEELER RARE -“BAD BEAT” FOR VEGAS OVER SUPER BOWL

ccording to the folks at William Hill US, a popular Las Vegas sportsbook, the Patriots winning, covering and hitting the over led to a “fitting end to a terrible pro football season.”

“For Nevada’s largest sports book operator, William Hill, it was a fitting end to a terrible pro football season,” a spokesman said during Monday Pregame.Com podcast.

“The Patriots, trailing 28-9, were available at 16/1 (+1600) on the LIVE InPlay Money Line, and their comeback was very profitable for the majority of bettors.

“The favorite covered. The total went over. All the popular props cashed.”

Most of the public money heading into Super Bowl LI was firmly on the Patriots.

The line never budged off Patriots -3, but the money kept pouring in on New England.

There was plenty of money on the under, but the public money was largely on the over, with the Pats and the over being a popular pair of bets (the favorite and the over are typically where the public goes in these big games).

But it wasn’t just those bets that hit.

The Patriots paid 16-to-1 odds from when they trailed 28-9, and according to William Hill there were “triple digit” tickets (literally hundreds of them) on the Pats when they were 10-to-1 or higher. A $10 ticket on the pats at 10-to-1 would pay out $100.

The books got hammered by Tom Brady winning the Super Bowl LI MVP award as well. Brady was 6-to-5 to win the MVP, and he attracted “more than double the total of dollars” of anyone else that was available.

Stephen Gostkowski’s missed extra point had ramifications too. The Patriots were forced to try multiple two-point conversions, and there was a ton of money on that happening. It was a “very popular prop” bet and “96 percent of the total number of tickets” were on “Yes.” There were also a ton of bets on whether there would be a missed extra point, and 87 percent of them had “Yes,” which paid off +250.

The overtime period killed Vegas too.

It was another “very popular prop,” and betting “Yes” on overtime paid 11-to-2, with 85 percent of the tickets on “Yes.” Julian Edelman attempting a pass blasted the books, because 96 percent of the tickets at William Hill were on the over (2.5) of players to attempt a pass. With Matt Ryan, Brady and Edelman all attempting one, the bet paid off at +110.

The Patriots didn’t even help out Vegas when they were bad either. The Brady interception that was returned for a score by Robert Alford cashed two tickets, including the 85 percent of the bets on Brady throwing a pick that were on “Yes,” which paid +110.

There are more incidents of the books getting hammered, which just goes to show you how bad a Super Bowl outcome it was for Las Vegas. For a while there it looked like they were going to make back all the money lost on the playoffs, when favorites covered in a bunch of blowouts and the only two underdog winners were popular public picks, but in the end it flipped back against Vegas.

Don’t feel bad for the house though, last time I checked, Vegas is doing just fine.

But if I were going to tell a fairy tale about your life lately, I’d be tempted to say this: Your rumble with the sweaty angel is not finished. In fact, the best and holiest part is still to come. But right now you have cosmic permission to take a short break and rest a while. During the lull, ratchet up your determination to learn all you can from your friendly “struggle.” Try to figure out what you’ve been missing about the true nature of the sweaty angel. Vow to become a stronger advocate for yourself and a more rigorous revealer of the wild truth.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Here’s some advice from Scorpio writer Norman Rush: “The main effort of arranging your life should be to progressively reduce the amount of time required to decently maintain yourself so that you can have all the time you want for reading.” It’s understandable that a language specialist like Rush would make the final word of the previous sentence “reading.” But you might choose a different word. And I invite you to do just that. The coming weeks will be an excellent time to devotedly carve out more time to do The Most Important Thing in Your Life.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Sixteenthcentury Italian painter Titian was renowned for his brilliant use of color. He was also prolific, versatile, and influential. In 2011, one of his paintings sold for $16.9 million. But one of his contemporaries, the incomparable Michelangelo, said that Titian could have been an even greater artist if he had ever mastered the art of drawing. It seems that Titian skipped a step in his early development. Is there any way that your path resembles Titian’s, Sagittarius? Did you neglect to cultivate a basic skill that has subtly (or not so subtly) handicapped your growth ever since? If so, the coming weeks and months will be an excellent time to fix the glitch.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Our obsessive use of digital devices has diminished our power to focus. According to a study by Microsoft, the average human attention span has shrunk to eight seconds -- one second less than that of a typical goldfish. I’m guessing, though, that you Capricorns will buck this trend in the coming weeks. Your ability to concentrate may be exceptional even by pre-Internet standards.

I hope you’ll take opportunity of this fortunate anomaly to get a lot of important work and play done.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): The time is now, Brave Aquarius. Be audacious about improving the big little things in your life. (That’s not a typo. I did indeed use the term “big little things.”) For example: Seek out or demand more engaging responsibilities.

Bring your penetrating questions to sphinx-like authorities. Go in search of more useful riddles.

Redesign the daily rhythm to better meet your unique needs. Refuse “necessary” boredom that’s not truly necessary. Trust what actually works, not what’s merely attractive. Does all that seem too bold and brazen for you to pull off? I assure you that it’s not.

You have more clout than you imagine. You also have a growing faith in your own power to make subtle fundamental shifts. (That’s not a typo. I did indeed use the term “subtle fundamental shifts.”)

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “Love does not at first mean merging, surrendering, and uniting with another person,” wrote the poet Rilke, “for what would a union be of two people who are unclarified, unfinished, and still incoherent?” That’s an excellent meditation for you to entertain during the Valentine season, Pisces. You’re in the right frame of mind to think about how you could change and educate yourself so as to get the most out of your intimate alliances. f you are a hopeless romantic you will be looking forward to Valentine’s Day with your sweetie. If you are single and ready to mingle, a singles Valentine’s party may be more to your sensibilities. Perhaps you’re exacting a holiday from relationships.

Yet, you can’t tell me you don’t care to be loved and adored by others. Whatever your status may be, love is in the air and cannot be denied.

Red and pink decorative items adorned grocery store isles in exchange of Christmas decorations within days. Valentine’s Day, ranks slightly shy of holiday floral sales.

Christmas and Mother’s Day slightly surpass Valentine’s Day and are also lucrative in floral sales. According to the National Retail Federation, 35 percent of Americans will buy flowers for Valentine’s Day, spending a total of $2 billion dollars. Estimating 250 million roses to be sold on Valentine’s Day, 2017.

Every woman loves red roses for Valentine’s. Ladies, you may be surprised, men enjoy receiving flowers also. We know it is the thought that counts and we are feeling loved by another. I’ve often struggled what to share with my sweetie on this fun holiday.

If this you, here are a few thoughts for you ladies and gentlemen. When in doubt, flowers are always appreciated. Here are few clever ideas.

Of course we each have a budget.

Therefore, do not feel as though you have to spend your last dime to satisfy your man.

Everyone loves to possess a little something

to open. A card is a must. Consider creating your own card. It’s more personal and more likely to be savored by your sweetie rather than chucked in the trash. You can never go wrong with cologne. Do you know his favorite scent? Every man loves new socks or a shirt.

Just think, every time he slips it on, he can think of you. Then there are other fun gifts to consider. How about a personalized photo album? A collection of photos together would comprise a beautiful memoir. Or, there are some wonderful books to keep a collection of your dating/marriage memories. Of course, love coupons (be creative) and lingerie never disappoint.

Listen up guys. Most women enjoy flowers but it’s not a must. Perhaps, you would like to forgo the flowers and do something a little more special. Dinner is always lovely.

Or, how about a get-a-way or a stay-cay?

Consider, ordering room service or takeout and enjoy a quiet evening alone. This is nirvana for married couples with children.

It renders an opportunity to reconnect with your spouse and enjoy a relaxing evening.

When it comes to gifts, jewelry never fails and always prevails. A day at the spa is always appreciated. If you have been dating a while, maybe it’s time to pop the question!

However you choose to spend your time, do so with an open-heart and mind. Love is patient and kind. Enjoy the love!

HERE’S WHAT NO HEALTH INSURANCE LOOKS LIKE

I

have been a medical social worker for 30 years. We’re the folks that get called in to figure out how someone in the hospital is going to get follow up care after they are admitted in a crisis with no insurance. Yes, you may be able to get lung cancer or congestive heart failure diagnosed in an emergency room, but that doesn’t mean that an oncologist or cardiologist will see you after the crisis pass. Why? Because you have no insurance!

You can get referred to the county clinics in Riverside and apply for county insurance but all of that takes time. You can apply for special funds from philanthropies devoted to helping cancer patients, but that takes time too. You can apply for special Medical.. But guess what... That takes a lot of time . And what about medications? Oh that’s right, you don’t have insurance, so you can pay for your meds out of pocket at a higher rate than insurance would ever pay , and that is if you can afford it after setting up payments on the hospital bill which is also far higher than an insurance plan would ever agree to.

The reason this is so critical to know is that a lot of people in this valley risk losing their insurance if the Affordable Care Act is repealed. In fact, according to the just released HARC survey the number of uninsured in our valley went from 33.6% in 2013 act down to

13.9 % in 2016. That’s almost a 20% drop!

Thanks to Affordable Care, people now have access to outpatient physicians, follow up, prescription benefits with negotiated prices for meds… in short everything that prevents them from ending up in the emergency room. The Affordable Care Act also addresses the infamous donut whole gap in coverage that seniors face for their prescription coverage. Thanks to ACA that donut hole is set to go down each year until 2020. And if, God forbid, you should lose your insurance by losing a job, you cannot be denied insurance for a pre-existing condition, nor can your young adult children who, thanks to ACA , been allowed to stay on your insurance until age 26, be denied new coverage when they age off your insurance at 26 for a pre-existing condition like.

These are just a few of the many critical, stabilizing components of the ACA that get bypassed in the rhetoric about premiums and deductibles. Without them we risk going back decades in medical coverage and again having thousands of people coming into the emergency room only when they are in so much pain they can’t stay home any longer.

I urge you to write to Congressman and your Senator with your own stories of how having insurance made a difference in your life. This will affect all of us!

WINNERS DON’T WHINE

W

hen you stop whining and take positive action, you start winning. It’s just that simple I thought as my client related the story of how unhappy she was in her current job.

Realizing she had some venting to do I let her tell me all that was unjust about her work life. When she ran out of steam, I took over giving her the cold hard truth. All the whining in the world won’t change a thing.

I’m not saying my client is a w orld class complainer. The truth is, sometimes we all fall into the trap of spewing a lot of negativity.

A friend of mine does that when he drives.

Yes, it is annoying when drivers neglect to use their turn signals and exhibit other poor driving skills, but a running commentary as we travel from Point A to Point B takes the joy out of being a passenger in his car.

Okay so sometimes we nitpick over trivial things. What really holds us back from moving forward on larger issues, is the amount of energy we waste complaining.

I’m guessing I was not the first person to hear of my client’s displeasure over her job. Perhaps her friends heard about it at happy hour, her husband and children over dinner and maybe her hair stylist got a dose

of it too. She was giving away her power by ruminating over it on a daily basis rather than dealing with the issue.

Why do we complain incessantly? It’s just a lot easier to let the world know we are being wronged rather than expending the effort to make it right. Bottom line, my client had two choices. She either adjusted to the culture of the company, or began a job search. Both paths demanded time and effort. After hearing all the gritty details, my best advice to her was cutting her losses and finding an environment where her core value’s match that of the company. She received my counsel with a heavy sigh. It was a reality she had to face. Once she made peace with a plan, her world (and that of others around her) would improve.

Now, for a moment of reflection: How about you? Is there something bugging you that you do nothing but grouse about? Do something about it this week. Make it a priority, no more stalling. Stop the whining and begin winning again.

DANNY & SALTY: PLEASE ADOPT US TOGETHER!

The gray male cat is named Danny.

The white female cat is named Salty. Both are completely potty trained. She is very affectionate and loves to be pet and held.

He’s a bit more skittish but will let you pet him and I’ve picked him up several times. They are brother and sister and about 7 months old. They adore each other. They showed up in our yard as babies and we started

feeding them. They’ve been completely inside with us for 10 days now and haven’t tried to get back out and don’t meow or whine to go out. They’ve adjusted to indoor life very well. They are getting spayed and neutered and their shots next week. We are moving and cannot keep them. I want them to be adopted together.
