HONORING QUARTO VALLEY RECORDS AND FOUNDER BRUCE QUARTO

Paul Rodgers & Bruce Quarto

imple, powerful, and successful are the cornerstones used to describe the dynamic record label Quarto Valley Records (QVR). QVR is a Southern California-based record company started by Bruce Quarto, who is part genius and part music fan. “His enthusiasm knows no boundaries!” according to Paul Rodgers, singersongwriter of Bad Company/Free. Bruce’s goal for QVR is to develop the label into a production, publishing and marketing group guided by these values in its relationships with artists, clients and customers alike. The label’s primary focus is on utilizing the developing 21st century cross-media opportunities to the maximum benefit of its artists, allowing their creative identity to grow and prosper. Even as the future growth of the entertainment industry continues to evolve into new revenue

streams from new technology, the industry requires a new approach for marketing and a new blueprint for artist agreements that QVR supplies. QVR represents the diverse genres of Icons, Rock, Blues and Jazz, along with an impressive roster of legacy artists and emerging talent including Paul Rodgers, Savoy Brown, Edgar Winter, Deborah Bonham, The Immediate Family, Denny Seiwell, Richard T. Bear, Texas Scratch and Dominic Quarto. Part-time Palm Springs resident and CV Weekly’s winner of the 2019 first Icon Award, Paul Rodgers, was one of the first artists signed with QVR in 2017 and released his ‘Free Spirit’ CD, LP and DVD that hit #1 on the Nielsen Soundscan Charts and #2 on the Billboards Charts. QVR is a grass roots record company that blends modern day technology with the best of the old school approach. One notable figure is QVR’s Director of Label Operations Michael Carden, who brings over 45 years of music industry experience to QVR. Over the decades, Carden has been involved with and headed up some of the world’s premiere entertainment companies including Eagle Rock Entertainment and WEA, and labels including Atlantic Records, Spitfire Records and East West Records. He has worked in many facets of the music business — from retail and distribution — to production, marketing and operations for music entities and major and independent labels. With a keen eye for musical talent and an acumen for business management, Michael’s

expertise lies in marketing, distribution, sales, artist management and A&R. Prior to joining QVR, Carden served as President of North American Operations for Eagle Rock Entertainment, where he was responsible for building up Eagle Rock Entertainment in the U.S. marketplace. During his 10 plus years with Eagle Rock, he oversaw releases of documentary and live performance titles by such acts as Jeff Beck, the Doors, Talking Heads, Eric Clapton, Usher, Miles Davis, the Who, Deep Purple, Queen, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper and many others across all media. Among his many accomplishments as President and EVP of the Company, was the consolidation of their audio and video portions in the early 2000s. Initially hired as a consultant in 2001, impressed with his experience and his management skills, the company made him GM of Spitfire Records and Eagle Records. During his tenure at Eagle Rock, Carden successfully pushed for them to be one of the first music companies to move into the high-definition DVD arena by utilizing Bluray technology—Eagle Rock became one of the largest holders of hi def music and documentary rights in the world. QVR was established in 2012, after a conversation that Bruce Quarto had with his friend brought to light the way most record companies treat their artists. He began to study the industry and seek ways to conduct business that was fair to all. continue to page 5

You get to really see projects evolve from the bottom line all the way up. You get to do developmental things like helping the artists signed choose the album artwork. It’s excellent being involved to that degree. I can’t sing or play any instruments, so this is my way of being in music. It makes me feel connected,” said Carden. The artist will always be in the picture when working with QVR, as a cooperative, fruitful relationship is forged between musician and label. quartovalleyrecords.com

he pandemic has not afforded many opportunities to get dressed up (besides your trusty pair of pajama pants and sweatshirts for at-home loungewear), but for those occasions where you do, in fact, get to go out, Savvy’s Boutique in Palm Desert has just what you need to emerge from your quarantine cocoon with affordable and adorable styles. Described as a “vintage meets industrial” women's clothing boutique, the familyowned business is operated by the mother and daughter team of Savannah and Kimberlee Nelson. The Savvy's company was established in 2019 with the conviction to bring better sourced, higher quality clothing at a price everyone can afford. “My mom started doing LuLaRoe about four years ago and from there she started doing fashion for women online. We decided to go in the business together and love it!” said Savannah. Getting the finances and overhead costs for the business clothes was the most difficult part of launching Savvy’s, as well as selecting which garments the team wanted

Our line is not limited to any specific season or trend, and can be worn year around. We like to think after a women cleans out her closet only Savvy’s clothing would remain essential,” states the Savvy’s team. Savvy’s is a family-centered business, reaching beyond just a mother/daughterowned operation. The Nelson’s cousin and niece Jasmyn Cabral sells her handcrafted jewelry line called Midnight Jazzi in the shop, Jasmyn’s husband Andrew Cabral takes all the pictures for the website and online presence, and grandmother Pattie Rittmiller is the decorator and designer of the boutique. Another important figure is CK Handyman Contractor Chris Nelson, who did all of the remodel work in the shop. “Sometimes it’s hard knowing what clothing to bring to the shop that will appeal to a variety of people. We want to strive to carry something for everyone, but it’s challenging to pin point that exactly. But so far, people seem to love it and always find that perfect outfit! I also have a lot of returning customers, which is amazing and I absolutely love getting to know everyone!” said Savannah. Savvy’s Boutique is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Saturday.

ff Da Cuff has been successful because of the wide variety of music they are able to play. Some of their music styles include Latin, country, classic rock, blues, contemporary, swing, disco, funk and much more. They will work with whatever the event requires and are willing to learn songs when necessary for weddings, corporate parties, etc. They enjoy themed parties and have Halloween, Christmas and Birthday songs ready to play. They play songs from the 50's, 60's 70's, 80's up to current times. They are Coachella Valley's Good Time Band for a reason. Off Da Cuff is an appropriate name for this band as the audience is always delighted with the different songs that are crowd favorites, yet many times are not played by most cover bands. If you like to dance, or just have a good time, and meet new friends, come give Off Da Cuff the opportunity to give you musical enjoyment. Right now you can find them at Babaloo's in Palm Desert every other Friday night. They also have been entertaining for years at the Palm Desert CC, The Tack Room Tavern, The 19th Hole and various Country Clubs throughout the Valley. CONSIDER THIS

T

“As F. Scott said, there’ll be no second act.” hat’s the Fleshtones, quoting one of the 20th century’s biggest literary lions, F. Scott Fitzgerald. But “The Great Gatsby” author was alluding to America’s capricious nature, not the venerable Queens quartet. Fact is, the band has been enjoying a resurgence since the dawn of the 21st century. A quintessential New York band, their story began in 1976 when roommates Keith Streng and Jan Marek Pakulski discovered the previous tenants had left behind some musical equipment. Keith strapped on a guitar and Jan picked up the bass. Pretty quickly, neighborhood pals Peter Zaremba and Lenny Caulderon joined in on vocals, harmonica, keys and drums, respectively. Soon enough the four-piece was sharing stages with up-and-coming Punk progenitors like the Ramones, Blondie, Television and Talking Heads. All of these bands made their bones playing scuzzy dives (ahem, soon-tobe legendary venues) like CBGB’s and Max’s Kansas City. Later they cultivated a passionate fan base performing at Club 57, Danceteria, Irving Plaza in NYC and supportive clubs like Maxwell’s in Hoboken and the original 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. Although their contemporaries were using the Punk Rock paradigm to mine slightly more commercial sounds, The Fleshtones’ sound was a scabrous mash-up of Garage, Surf-Rock, early ‘60s Psych with a hint of R&B. For a while, they even added a horn section, The Action Combo, to their live shows. They dubbed their style Super Rock. The band hooked up with the indie label Red Star Records and recorded their debut, Blast Off. Unfortunately, Red Star was experiencing financial problems and the album remained unreleased. The band nearly called it quits, in fact, Lenny left and Bill Milhizer stepped behind the drum kit. Their luck began to change at the start of the new decade when they signed with I.R.S. Records. The indie(ish) label was distributed by A&M Records and helmed by Police manager Miles Copeland. The label would soon achieve massive success with The Go-Go’s and throughout the ‘80s, they would break new artists like The English Beat, Wall Of Voodoo, Oingo Boingo, R.E.M. and Concrete Blonde. An appearance in the British Punk/New Wave concert film, URGH! A Music War alongside O.M.D., Wall Of Voodoo, X, English Beat, Surf Punks, The Police, XTC (to name a few) raised their profile. Their inaugural I.R.S. release, was an EP, Up Front, followed by four long-players, 1981’s Roman Gods, 1983’s Hexbreaker! along with Speed Connection, and Speed Connection II-The Final Chapter. Both these efforts found the band in their element in a live setting. The Roman Gods album included their breakthrough hit, “American Beat,” which the band performed on Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand.” Later the song gained a wider audience when it was included to the soundtrack of Tom Hanks’ raucous and raunchy 1984 movie, “Bachelor Party.” That same year, Peter was tapped to host “I.R.S.’s Cutting Edge,” which aired the last

Sunday of the month, on MTV. The program gave plenty of exposure to under-the-radar artists like Minutemen, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Klark Kent. In late 1986 Jan left the band, before a permanent replacement was found, both Fred Smith (Television) and Andy Shernoff (The Dictators) took turns holding down the low end . By the end of the decade, Ken Fox was recruited for bass duties. Throughout the ‘90s, The Fleshtones hopscotched from indie labels like Emergo, Ichiban, Telstar, Epitaph Red Star and Wagram. Despite the tsuris, they continued to crank out consistently entertaining albums like Fleshtones Vs. Reality, Soul Madrid, Powerstance, Beautiful Light, More Than Skin Deep, and of course, Hitsburg, Hitsburg Revisited and Return To Hitsburg. Through it all, they managed to maintain their loyal and exuberant fanbase. Along the way, they circled the globe, winning over passionate followers in Spain, Italy, Scandinavia and France. Back in NYC, they were on hand for the creation of “Wigstock!” and they were last band to play at The World Trade Center’s Windows Of The World, before the terror of 9/11 dimmed those lights forever. They also managed to influence a plethora of bands, including the Hoodoo Gurus, The BellRays and The White Stripes. By 2003, they finally found a simpatico home at the Yep Roc label. In the ensuing years they have released a clutch of superlative albums like Do You Swing, Beachhead, Take A Good Look, the yuletide themed Stocking Stuffer, Brooklyn Sound Solution, Wheel Of Talent and The Band Drinks For Free. 2007 saw the publication of Sweat: The Story Of The Fleshtones, America’s Garage Band. Two years later, a feature-length documentary, Pardon Us For Living, But The Graveyard’s Full, was released. Now, the band has released their 22nd(!) album, Face Of The Werewolf. Initially available on vinyl for the 2020 Black Friday edition of Record Store Day, it is now available on myriad formats. The opening track hurtles out of the speakers at warp speed. Twangy, reverbdrenched guitars collide with spooky harmonica, growly bass lines and ooky Farfisa over a rampaging backbeat. Frightfest lyrics depict a nocturnal snog-session on a moonlit night. Things quickly get out of hand, becoming positively Lycanthropic; “The light was low, the time was right, I saw the full moon glowing in the night, if I’m going to make my move this is it, when she turned to me to kiss her lips, it was the face of the screaming werewolf, fill my heart with terror and fright.” Yowly vocals are matched by fuzzcrusted guitars that blur on the instrumental break. The locomotive rush continues on “Spilling Blood,” which recalls a Who concert that turns deadly. Rippling keys wrap around looselimbed bass, crunchy guitars and a walloping backbeat. The opening verse sets the scene; “The sixties were over, malaise swept the nation, I was looking for fun, but got alienation my boss Ron said ‘we got work to do, we’re going to Forrest Hills because I booked the

BY ELENI P. AUSTIN

Who.’” Tensile and urgent, windmilling riffs underscore this sharp realization; “Love was out of reach as the stage was tall, I realized I didn’t like Arena Rock at all/And high on the stage like they didn’t know a thing, The Who went through the motions to play and sing.” Meanwhile, “The Show Is Over” is a manic hoedown, powered by a pounding, tripletime tattoo, clattery handclaps, boomerang bass and scattershot guitar licks. A broken romance is compared to a two-car collision, a fatal hit and run; “Was it you that I saw there, staring at the mangled body of what we used to share, did you ever care, or did I see you smile?” Rather than wallow or pout, Peter insists it’s time to “move along, move along, move along, move along now.” The calibrated chaos of the instrumentation culminates in a frenetic harmonica freakout. Just ahead of the album’s official release, …Werewolf’s first two singles went into heavy rotation on the Sirius radio channel, Little Steven’s Underground Garage. “You Gotta love, Love” stacks scuzz-tastic guitars and barbed bass atop a stompy beat. The lyrics attempt to summon the spirit of the Summer Of Love; “Can you believe in a power called love? Love power, even the hippie kind?” But Peter can’t completely marshal the requisite enthusiasm for that sort of dippy Flower Power. As guttural guitars search and destroy on the break, it’s clear that you can take the boys out of NYC, but you can’t take NYC out of the boys. Menacing bass runs, gritty guitars and a crashing backbeat propel “Violet Crumble, Cherry Ripe.” No chasing the dragon for these guys, their addictions are limited to Australian candy confections; “Wrappers scattered all over my bed, I’m not myself, so you’ve been warned, I’ve been transformed.” Squally guitars and a jittery rhythm underscore the Jekyll and Hyde metamorphosis that occurs following one too many treacly treats. The best songs here find The Fleshtones deep in their comfort zone on one cut and expanding their horizons on the other. “Manpower Debut” is a Shagadelic groover replete with shang-a-lang guitars, under-slung bass, squishy, Bazooka Joe bubblegum keys and a rattle-trap rhythm. Darting harmonica fills punctuate each tongue and cheek verse. Lyrics filter testosterone-fueled angst through a cartoony lens; “You don’t need some little boy, I’m no Little Lord Fauntleroy, I got the itch, so flippa my switch/Hey man can you share

a bit of your manpower debut, I’m reading Shelley, Byron and Keats, manpower for you, gimme extra cheese on my slice of pizza, Oh, I got toxic masculinity.” Shards of staccato guitar unspool on the break, duckwalking with Chuck Berry-fied economy. Conversely, “Alex Trebek” executes a stylistic 180. A surprisingly sweet encomium to the (gone too soon) late “Jeopardy!” legend and all-around mensch. Jangly guitars brush up against wily bass shimmery Farfisa notes and a cantilevered beat. Presenting general knowledge clues like “Thirty Four years on TV, born in Sudbury, Ontario, he got our friend Fran Fried on the show, who made history on Jeopardy,” in the form of answers, the response, “Who is Alex? Who is Alex,” must be phrased in the form of questions. It’s pretty irresistible. Two tracks time-travel to more evocative eras. The spectre of Spector and Springsteen haunt “Waiting On A Girl,” from the Wall Of Sound production, to the Doo-Wop flavored vocals and the swoony violin. Bassist Ken Fox’s vocals are out in front and he channels some operatic E. Street imagery with lyrics like “My friends all tell me I’m crazy, I’ll raise a glass cheers to you all, but my place is right here on Lonely Street, waiting for my true love to call.” The band tackle a deeeep cut from the Rolling Stones’ late ‘60s canon. “Child Of The Moon” was originally found on the flipside of the band’s “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” single, a bit of throwaway, that has gained stature over the years. The Fleshtones hew pretty closely to the Stones’ blueprint, but manage to make it their own by slightly accelerating the tempo, jettisoning the Psychedelic drone, and inserting slashing power chords, smoky harmonica, buzzy bass, space-age keys. Few can touch Mick Jagger’s sybaritic sneer, but Peter Zaremba comes close. A couple of instrumentals dot the record. “Swinging Planet X” is a sure-footed stomp that builds off a primordial Bo Diddley beat, Hang 10 Surf guitar, Bluesy harmonica, and prickly bass lines. Next time you create an instrumental mixtape (or curate a Spotify -whatever the fuck- playlist) this one will sandwich nicely between the Surfaris’ “Wipe Out” and the Stones’ “2120 South Michigan Avenue.” The album closes with the other instrumental, “Somerset Morning.” Here, hazy harmonica notes wash over rumbling bass lines, Spaghetti Western guitars, whirly keys, a hint of finger-poppin’ cool and a hopa-long beat. It’s a sweet and shambolic end to another great Fleshtones effort. Some 45 years in, The Fleshtones continue evince the same elastic urgency, crackling caustic wit and frenetic fun they displayed onstage at CBGB’s. Their Super Rock sound may not hit the top of the charts, but really, who gives a shit? Face Of The Screaming Werewolf is a rollicking rave-up from start to finish.

THE VINO VOICE

BY RICK RIOZZA

THE EMPEROR’S WINE PAIRING PARTY

P

robably most working astrologers in our valley today know full well how the selected animals were designated to be a sign in the Chinese/Lunar New Year. This last week, China and much of the world celebrated said New Year, which is deemed the Year of the Ox. Each year has an animal sign in the Chinese Zodiac (literally “circle of animals”), which is based on the Moon and has a 12-year cycle. So the astrologers tell us a good story: The Jade Emperor, one of the most important Taoist gods, held a race where the first 12 winners would be chosen as the royal guard. Further, there was a real need to be able to mark time, so it appears that he worked both of these matters together. Thus, the winners not only became the royal protector but were to be known forever as the name of a particular year in the 12 years zodiac cycle. And what we like about this story is that the Jade Emperor did not select the territory’s strong men of valor to compete, but rather, a la Noah in the Bible, he apparently invited the animal kingdom to run the race. As a reward for turning up, the Emperor named a year in the zodiac after each one, while the race would determine the order each animal would be placed. A real-time report on the race would have shown the Ox/Bull to be ahead, but the savvy rat jumped onto the ox as a vehicle over the river and then jumped ahead to finish first. As a result, the rat became the first animal in the cycle, with the ox relegated to second. Next was the tiger, then the rabbit—and, well, you’ll hear the remaining line-up as the years go by. As far as us vino enthusiasts and foodies are concerned however, we’re seeing our immediate future to include some tasty Chinese meals fit for a king—or an emperor, if you will. And of course, we’ll bring the requisite wines in which to enjoy and welcome in the Year of the Ox—broccoli beef anyone? No one these days really gets upset when the wrong wine shows up to pair with a certain meal; the millennials around the table keep us in line on that one. However, Chinese Cuisine— and modernly perhaps all “Asian Cuisine” can be somewhat complicated when matching wine to all of the various dishes and diverse flavors presented at the same time at the same setting. I’ll cut to the chase here: Many a wine columnist has over-eaten and over-drank in determining what goes best with what. No one will completely agree on the wine list of choice, but the varietals listed below do hit the mark when it comes to covering the panoply of foods and flavors on our lucky table. For white wines, we like the Riesling and Gewürztraminers, and Chardonnay sparkling wines; for the reds, Pinot Noir and Gamay. Any

12

of these wines will work with any Chinese dish generally. So pick one you like and you’ll be safe and savvy. Traditionally in America, Cantonese food was—and perhaps is still, the most popular. Dim Sum covers a wide range of small dishes that we all remember when we went to a Cantonese restaurant. You’ve got the steamed dumplings, pan-fried dumplings, spring rolls, vegetables, and small portions of soy-seasoned meats. Generally speaking, there are a lot of mild flavors going on. You’ll wish to avoid highly tannic red wines because they are likely to overpower the lightly flavored dishes. A sparkling wine—especially those made with 100% Chardonnay, like your favorite Blanc de Blancs pair wonderfully with the fresh and light Dim Sum dishes on the table. The cleansing bubbly is always great with the fried shrimp and fried potstickers. Sweet and salty dishes call for a refreshing off-dry Riesling or chilled Italian Moscato d’Asti. A chilled Spanish fino Sherry is also a very sexy choice to pair with Cantonese. For those braised pork dishes, look to match a young fruit-forward New World Pinot Noir or a Beaujolais-Villages—which is a step-up from the standard Beaujolais. Not to worry if you can’t find a “Villages” [Vee-Lahj], Gamay/ Beaujolais is always welcomed. Chow mien (fried noodles) and fried rice, with all the accoutrements, there are a lot of flavors packed in one plate. Wonderful savors of oyster sauce, ginger, garlic, onions and spices seek some acidity to refresh the palate. Again, your go-to dry/off-dry Riesling and sparkling wines work well. The beloved duck dish appears quite often in the cuisine with all of its surrounding flavors of hoisin sauce and onions to name a few. We like a good fruity Pinot Noir from Sonoma Russian River Valley or Oregon; or, a cru Beaujolais works well too. As to the particular Peking Duck dish, again look to the off-dry Riesling. Should you wish to bump-up the pairing, treat yourself to a Spätlese Riesling, which is more complex and a touch sweeter—in a good way. Classic sweet & sour dishes, such as pork, orange, or sesame chicken, work very well with aromatic varietals such a Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and the Argentine Torrontes. Finally, our favorite hot and spicy Sichuan dishes scream out for a cold sparkler, be it Brut Champagne, Brut Rose bubbly, Lambrusco, Asti or Prosecco. The aforementioned chilled up aromatic wines, again, work great. The red wines best for this cuisine are lightly chilled, light-bodied but juicy reds such as a youthful Beaujolais or young Pinot Noir. Stay away from powerful tannic reds that will only enhance the heat—unless you’re into that sort of thing! Bon Appétit & Chinese Cheers!

ill and Silver Martin celebrated Valentine’s Day 2021 this month, their love enhanced by their mutual love for animals. When they first met 48 years ago, their conversation quickly led to a discovery of how they both loved horses. On their first date the following day, Silver sold Bill a horse and ended up giving riding lessons to her new beau. Needless to say, sparks flew during the ride. At the time of their wedding the following year, they owned two black lab dogs and five horses. Horses and dogs continued to be a part of their life together. Bill and Silver rode horses with the Long Beach mounted police in ten Rose Parades and many other events. Their horses always included at least one rescue horse,

as they were keenly aware of how the majestic horses are sometimes abused and discarded. Silver fondly recalls her special rescue horse, Galiano, who slowly came out of his shell to show love and gratitude after being horribly mistreated. In 2007, the Martins moved from Rolling Hills and became full time Coachella Valley residents. Silver became active in Animal Samaritans where she met and befriended Lindi Biggi. In 2008, Silver became a founding member and Board Member for Loving All Animals, a new charity Lindi founded to help homeless animals. In 2010, the story of Duroville went viral in the local news. This dilapidated migrant worker trailer park in Thermal went into federal receivership due to the unsanitary

living conditions for the people there. Soon the media, looking for a new angle, reported on the hundreds of stray dogs in and near the community. New housing plans were underway for the human residents. However, pet restrictions at the new complex would only increase the number of stray animals. Loving All Animals decided to help the dogs in and near Duroville. Seven wonderful local veterinarians eagerly signed up for the 3-day shifts in the Duroville church, now converted into a temporary vet clinic. The dogs poured in, their humans grateful for the free services that included snacks and toys for the children. Some residents helped round up the strays that needed vaccinations, spaying, and other vet services. Coachella Valley animal welfare groups coordinated the rescue of the unclaimed stray pups. Just as the Duroville event ended, a resident suddenly placed a matted white dog in Silver’s arms. He explained that the homeless animal lived underneath one of the trailers. The pup was soaking wet, covered in mud from the rain, and had no less than 68 ticks imbedded in his fur. The dog’s condition tugged at Silver’s heartstrings. Thom Daves, director of the old Save A Pet shelter, took the dog to his clinic for grooming and vetting. Three days later, the Martins picked up Rolex, now neutered, vaccinated, and looking gorgeous. It was an amazing transformation with Rolex resembling a handsome Bichon. The couple had three other dogs at the time, but Rolex fit perfectly into their pack. Silver explains, “Bill is always there to walk our dogs, take them to the dog park, or do whatever they might need. One more dog just meant more love in our lives. They teach us so much about unconditional love. Rolex is the best dog we’ve ever had. He’s always by our side, loyal and loving. Rolex is amazing with the other dogs that arrive for my pet sitting business. He knows which ones need comforting, and which ones are ready for play. He patiently welcomes each new dog, helping them adjust to the

THE NEW KNOW NOTHINGS

B

efore the rancor between modernday Democrats and Republicans as well as the emergence of QAnon, the United States experienced a strikingly similar situation about 170 years ago. Back in the mid-1800s, the United States faced an influx of immigrants - roughly 3 million people between 1845 and 1855. Nearly 70% of all charitable relief in New York City (our version of welfare) went to immigrants. From 1840 to 1850, U.S. population grew by 36% to 23 million people. By 1860, it had grown another 35% to 31 million thus doubling the population of the country in one generation. Started as the Order of the Star Spangled Banner (OSSB), the Know Nothing Party originated as a secret society made of white Anglo-Saxon Protestants or WASPs. Each member was instructed to say, “I know nothing” if asked about the Order giving rise to their nickname. Started as the Native American Party in reference to the early colonists (not the countries original residents), the Party later shortened its name to the American Party. The Know Nothings were the first major third party in the United States. According to the Smithsonian, America’s first two parties were the Federalists and Thomas Jefferson’s Democratic-Republicans. Jefferson’s party split in opposition to Andrew Jackson where the Republicans split off from Jackson while Jackson remained with the Democrats. The Republicans would become the Whigs with William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor being elected to the Presidency although that party would eventually splinter over slavery before reemerging. The Know Nothings were started by Thomas Whitney, a WASP silversmith and Bill

February 18 to February 24, 2021

the Butcher Poole, a gang leader, fighter and butcher. Marin Scorsese used Poole as the inspiration for his title character in Gangs of New York. Whitney was an influential member of the OSSB who wrote and published most of the Orders pamphlets. Whitney and the OSSB believed that the original settlors and colonists were entitled to more rights and privileges than recently arrived immigrants. During this time, conspiracies theories abounded. One of the most notable was written by Maria Monk who claimed to have gone undercover into a convent. While in the convent, she wrote that she saw Catholic priests raping young nuns who were kept against their will with the resulting babies strangled. While she was eventually exposed as a fraud, her writings sold 100,000s and led to the burnings of many churches around the country. Even after her exposure as a fraud, the book continued to be a best seller. At the time of the rise of the Know Nothings, the major political parties failing in response to the fears and concerns of the people. With this as the backdrop, this nationalistic, xenophobic party gained in

DALEGRIBOW ON THELAW

popularity due to the leadership vacuum. Back then, Catholics were the equivalent to Muslims today amongst xenophobes. The Irish were discriminated against much like African Americans at the time. The Know Nothings jumped on this stating their desires to protect Native Americans from the influx of Irish hedonists. By focusing on fear and hatred, the WASPy political class that controlled the Know Nothings was able to channel these hatreds and fears amongst the working class to gain political power without addressing more substantial class-based issues of the day. When Poole was shot in a brawl, the Know Nothings spun this into a politically motivated assassination by the Irish. While their narrative was a work of fiction, it served as a rallying cry against the Irish. Many Know Nothings believed that the Pope was interested in overthrowing the United States through the importation of Irish Catholics. Know Nothing tactics are reminiscent of QAnon and Trump Republicans conspiracists who believe that a secret kabal of globalist pedophiles like Bill Gates want to run the world.

BY HADDON LIBBY At their peak, the Know Nothings controlled the legislatures and governorships in California, Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island as well as 40 seats in the House of Representatives, a few senators and state assemblies in the South. While the Know Nothing Party broke apart due to the Civil War and Slavery, remnants of the party continued in what was left of the Republican Party. Following the Civil War, a re-emergent Republican party passed the Chinese Exclusion Act which banned all immigration for twenty years. While history may not repeat itself, it often bears a striking resemblance. There may be little that fact-based people of today can say to those believing in Anonymous posts. Cable news and online social media that profit from division have helped fact-less fearmongers gain legitimacy. Within the passage of time and a return to whatever form of normal follows the pandemic, the hope is that there will be a realization that facts matter. It almost seems fitting that QAnon and Trump Republican supporters have become the New Know Nothings. LEGAL REPRESENTATION OF THE INJURED & CRIMINALLY ACCUSED

CHARITABLE SCAMS DURING THE COVID ERA

C

alamities often bring out the worst in people. During the Covid Era, there are so many in need that some stoop to doing things, like setting up a fake charity, to get money. They might not have considered this during better times. We must all learn to Spot (and Report) the Fake Charities that emerge. These can be created because of Covid, The California Fires, Flooding in Florida and Louisiana or recent Hurricanes etc. Charity scams may go into full effect even before the Hurricane season. For instance, thousands of new websites with "Sandy/ Katrina" or "Relief" for instance, or related keyword search terms in them, had been registered, many by scammers before the Hurricanes hit. We know the name of the upcoming Hurricane early in the year and it is easy to register that name. Unfortunately, tragedies often inspire people to dig deep and give to those in need without checking them out. We see an outpouring of generosity during these challenging times. During the Covid epidemic, Catastrophic Fires, Hurricanes

or Earthquakes, we are all more inclined to help our fellow man. Thus we may fall for one of dozens of phony charities. If you don’t recognize the charity, don’t donate to them until you check them out. We must all learn to CHECK OUT these new charitable organizations. The charity names and reputations can be vetted at Charity Navigator, Charity Watch and Guide Star. To investigate a charity you can also go to Calif Charity Regulator and NASCO (National Assoc of State Charity Officials). You should also consider checking the website of the charity and learn about their mission and what percent of the money goes to charity. If/when you spot a scam charity, report it to the FTC or state charity regulator through nasconet.org. That is the only way to try to protect the next guy. OpenSecrets.org is another site to see if the charity is really a charity, and to confirm they give the money to those in need. Don’t just accept this new charity. You would be wise to assume an unsolicited donation request by email or phone is a scam.

Initially you should consider EXAMINING THE WEB ADDRESS. Remember that legitimate nonprofits organizations end in .org, not .com. Don't click on photos that may unload malware. IF THERE IS A REQUEST FOR MONEY, BE SMART… Don’t give out information. Don’t agree to having a courier come to your home to pick up the money. Instead ask to have them mail printed information to you. If they don't have your address, do not give it to them. WE ALL WANT TO BE SURE THE MONEY GOES TO THE CHARITY. Other “checkup sites” to consider: OpenSecrets.org, to see if the charity is really a charity and that they give money out: The Center for Responsive Politics, The Charity Navigator and Charity Watch, which all rate organizations. In addition Guide Star is a charity regulator. The AARP Fraud Watch helpline at 877-908-3360 is also a good source for Scam info. The IRS maintains an online database, where you can check whether an organization is a registered charity and if your donation will be tax deductible. Suspected charity

frauds should be reported to the FTC Federal Trade Commission). Consider the major reporting agencies below: Equifax - 800-525-6285. Fraud alert: 888766-0008. he entire world has undergone immense changes in the past year that none of could have imagined prior to the pandemic. While some of us may have considered what would happen if we were ever faced with this kind of global challenge, it would have been hard to comprehend the altered lifestyles we would experience as a result until it actually became our reality. The enormity of the change in daily life experienced by people, communities and nations spanning the world has taken us all by storm. It has forced us to shift our focus inward because all of the movement around us has stopped. We have become more aware of what is happening within by default because many of the distractions have fallen away. Could this be the point? Could there be a spiritual agenda in place underneath this pandemic? As we step into the unity paradigm and the golden age of peace, could this unwelcomed event be providing an opportunity for human beings to close out on old business in preparation for the new age? Let’s just assume for a minute that this is an opportunity. Wouldn’t we be well served if we use this pause to actively and consciously work on awakening ourselves to an enlightened way of being? If you answered yes to that question, think about this: awakening is about opening to higher truths by way of seeing things from a vantage point that positions us above the fray. We become observers rather than participants. As participants, we likely only see

what is right in front of us, but as observers, we have a 360-degree view. Observation is how we connect most fully and completely with truth. Truth will show us where we have fallen down. Truth will point out our strengths. Truth will unite us with the understanding of why we were stuck. Truth will tell us what lessons we have yet to learn. The knowledge that comes from these truths will be the currency we use to procure freedom from the old way of being. Truth lays the stepping-stones to the new paradigm at our feet. Every effort each one of us makes to connect with and grow from inner truth holds the potential to profoundly impact collective humanity because my success is your success is our success. And thanks to the events of the past year, this is a lesson in unity that has been on display for us to see quite clearly. FREEWILL ASTROLOGY

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 18

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Atheists like to confront religious people with accusations like this: “If God is so good, why does he allow suffering in the world?” Their simplistic, childish idea of God as some sort of Moral Policeman is ignorant of the lush range of ruminations about the Divine as offered down through the ages by poets, novelists, philosophers, and theologians. For example, poet Stéphane Mallarmé wrote, “Spirit cares for nothing except universal musicality.” He suggested that the Supreme Intelligence is an artist making music and telling stories. And as you know, music and stories include all human adventures, not just the happy stuff. I bring these thoughts to your attention, Aries, because the coming weeks will be a favorable time to honor and celebrate the marvelously rich stories of your own life—and to feel gratitude for the full range of experience with which they have blessed you. PS: Now is also a favorable phase to rethink and reconfigure your answers to the Big Questions. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Blogger Rachel C. Lewis confides, “I love being horribly straightforward. I love sending reckless text messages and telling people I love them and telling people they are absolutely magical humans and I cannot believe they really exist. I love saying, ‘Kiss me harder,’ and ‘You’re a good person,’ and, ‘You brighten my day.’” What would your unique version of Lewis’s forthrightness be like, Taurus? What brazen praise would you offer? What declarations of affection and care would you unleash? What naked confessions might you reveal? The coming days will be a favorable time to explore these possibilities. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): It’s a good time to become more of who you are by engaging with more of what you are not. Get in the mood for this heroic exercise by studying the following rant by Gemini poet Adam Zagajewski (who writes in Polish), translated by Gemini poet Clare Cavanaugh: “Read for yourselves, read for the sake of your inspiration, for the sweet turmoil in your lovely head. But also read against yourselves, read for questioning and impotence, for despair and erudition, read the dry, sardonic remarks of cynical philosophers. Read those whose darkness or malice or madness or greatness you can’t yet understand, because only in this way will you grow, outlive yourself, and become what you are.” CANCER (June 21-July 22): You’re on the verge of breakthroughs. You’re ready to explore frontiers, at least in your imagination. You’re brave enough to go further and try harder than you’ve been able to before. With that in mind, here’s a highly apropos idea from Cancerian novelist Tom Robbins. He writes, “If you take any activity, any art, any discipline, any skill, take it and push it as far as it will go, push it beyond where it has ever been before, push it to the wildest edge of edges, then you force it into the realm of magic.” (I might use the word “coax” or “nudge” instead of “force” in Robbins’ statement.) LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In her story “Homelanding,” Margaret Atwood writes, “Take me to your trees. Take me to your breakfasts, your sunsets, your bad dreams, your shoes. Take me to your fingers.” I’d love you to express requests like that. It’s a favorable time for you to delve deeper into the mysteries of people you care about. You will generate healing and blessings by cultivating reverent curiosity and smart empathy and crafty intimacy. Find out more about your best allies! VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You’re about to reach the end of your phase of correction and adjustment. To mark this momentous transition, and to honor your ever-increasing ability to negotiate with your demons, I offer you the following inspirational proclamation by poet Jeannette Napolitano: “I don’t want to look back in five years’ time and think, ‘We could have been magnificent, but I was afraid.’ In five years, I want to tell of how fear tried to cheat me out of the best thing in life, and I didn’t let it.” LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): It’s not a good time for you to be obsessed with vague abstractions, fear-

© Copyright 2021 Rob Brezsny

based fantasies, and imaginary possibilities. But it is a favorable phase to rise up in behalf of intimate, practical changes. At least for now, I also want to advise you not to be angry and militant about big, complicated issues that you have little power to affect. On the other hand, I encourage you to get inspired and aggressive about injustices you can truly help fix and erroneous approaches you can correct and close-at-hand dilemmas for which you can summon constructive solutions. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “The most beautiful things are those that madness prompts and reason writes,” declared author André Gide. As a writer myself, I will testify to the truth of that formulation. But what about those of you who aren’t poets and novelists and essayists? Here’s how I would alter Gide’s statement to fit you: “The most beautiful things are those that rapture prompts and reason refines.” Or maybe this: “The most beautiful things are those that experimentation finds and reason uses.” Or how about this one: “The most beautiful things are those that wildness generates and reason enhances.” Any and all of those dynamics will be treasures for you in the coming weeks. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): The poet Nayyirah Waheed has some advice I want you to hear. She writes, “Be easy. Take your time. You are coming home to yourself.” I will add that from my astrological perspective, the coming weeks will indeed be a time for you to relax more deeply into yourself—to welcome yourself fully into your unique destiny; to forgive yourself for what you imagine are your flaws; to not wish you were someone else pursuing a different path; to be at peace and in harmony with the exact life you have. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “The chief object of education is not to learn things but to unlearn things,” wrote author G. K. Chesterton. He was exaggerating for dramatic effect when he said that, as he often did. The more nuanced truth is that one of the central aims of education is to learn things, and another very worthy aim is to unlearn things. I believe you are currently in a phase when you should put an emphasis on unlearning things that are irrelevant and meaningless and obstructive. This will be excellent preparation for your next phase, which will be learning a lot of useful and vitalizing new things. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873–1943) ultimately became one of the 20th century’s most renowned composers. But his career had a rough start. Symphony No. 1, his first major work, was panned by critics, sending him into a fouryear depression. Eventually he recovered. His next major composition, Piano Concerto No. 2, was wellreceived. I don’t anticipate that your rookie offerings or new work will get the kind of terrible reviews that Rachmaninoff’s did. But at least initially, there may be no great reviews, and possibly even indifference. Keep the faith, my dear. Don’t falter in carrying out your vision of the future. The rewards will come in due time. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Ancient Greek playwright Euripides was popular and influential— and remains so to this day, 2,400 years later. But there’s a curiously boring aspect in five of his plays, Andromache, Alcestis, Helen, Medea, and The Bacchae. They all have the same exact ending: six lines, spoken by a chorus, that basically say the gods are unpredictable. Was Euripides lazy? Trying too hard to drive home the point? Or were the endings added later by an editor? Scholars disagree. The main reason I’m bringing this to your attention is to encourage you to avoid similar behavior. I think it’s very important that the stories you’re living right now have different endings than all the stories of your past. BY MICHELLE BORTHWICK

ave you tried Keto on your own only to feel like you keep making mistake after mistake? Or, do you feel it’s not working? Or, you know it could be working better? The Keto diet isn’t complicated but there is a learning curve to be successful. It takes time to change your behavior and wrap your brain around the Keto diet. During COVID-19 I’m finding people reaching out to me for coaching because they’re tired of gaining weight, they’re exhausted and motivated to get healthy and build their immune system. They want to start the keto diet correctly in an easy, safe, and effective way. After looking online and finding confusing and conflicting information they quickly realize that a keto coach just might be the solution. There are many reasons to hire a coach. Having a coach guide you through the process is invaluable for many reasons. And remember, a coach isn’t forever…just until you are confident to DIY it on your own. Here are just a few of the top reasons to hire a coach: • A coach can answer questions. • A coach is a trusted source of information. • A coach will get you started on your keto journey properly. • A coach will be dedicated to your success. • A coach can help you avoid pitfalls and costly mistakes. • A coach will keep you accountable and honest. • A coach will be there to encourage you when you’re unsure of yourself. Why is this important? If you know that you will have to be accountable to someone for what you do and what you eat, you’re more likely to stay on track. And, you will have the support you need at any time when you’re feeling unsure or just need to stay on track.

There is a powerful synergy that happens in coaching when you create a partnership with a trusted guide to move you closer to your goals. A coach has “been there, done that,” and provides an example of what is possible if you stay the course. But to stay the course, you must have a strong “why” to get consistent results. A coach will be invaluable to help you stay focused, motivated, and committed. When you have a coach who is just as invested in your success as you are… well, that’s priceless. The mindset of losing weight and regaining your best health is where coaching starts. You will learn the foundational aspects of the keto diet like what foods to eat, QuickStart basics, macros, diet hacks and more. But mindset matters. How to decide if you need a coach. People find success every day without a coach. Instead of asking if you NEED a coach, perhaps you should ask if a coach will allow you to avoid the frustrating mistakes that can plague your journey to Keto success; can a coach get you there faster? And the answer to that is: Yes! Don’t Struggle. Reach Out for Help. Are you serious about losing weight but still struggling and ready to break down unhealthy barriers to weight loss? Look at coaching… it isn’t for everyone, but It just might be the answer you’ve been looking for. About Michelle Borthwick: Michelle is a Keto Lifestyle coach, a Seasoned expert on Customized Keto. Keto weight loss results can be greatly improved with Coaching, Customization, Accountability, and a trusted partner to guide you every step of the way. Michelle offers private sessions, proven Keto diet hacks, goal setting, ongoing support and more. Follow Keto is Easy coach on Facebook and Instagram or go to Ketoiseasycoach.com.
