PALM SPRING SPEAKS INAUGURAL SEASON CONCLUDES -WITH A SURPRISE!

I

“ t's been a great inaugural year for us," said

Michael Green, Executive Director, Palm Springs Cultural Center. "We're thrilled to be able to bring this program to you." Palm Springs Cultural Life - "Palm Springs Speaks" is a speaker series sponsored by the Palm Springs Cultural Center and Friends of the Palm Springs Public Library, which "Seeks to entertain and educate while shining the spotlight on the written word and literacy for the Coachella Valley. The speaker series provides access to culture and the arts with a variety of speakers representing many walks of life." Jawaharlal Nehru, former Prime Minister of India and activist, said: "Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit." The Palm Springs Cultural Center and its programs are making a cultural difference here in the Coachella Valley. The Supples - The Palm Springs Cultural Center resides at the formally known Camelot Theatre located at 2300 E. Baristo Road, in Palm Springs. Philanthropists and longtime Palm Springs residents Ric and Rozene Supple founded the non-profit Palm Springs Cultural Center in 2007 and donated the building to the organization in 2015. In January 2018, the Camelot Theatre was rededicated as the Palm Springs Cultural Center. The Supples originally purchased the property in 1999 and before transferring the theatre to the cultural center, invested in a state-of-the-art sound and projection system. The Supples are also among the founders of the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Speakers - The 2017-2018 Palm Springs Speaks series began last November with journalist, LGBTQ activist and personality, Dan Savage, who spoke about his book American Savage: Insight, slights, and Fights on Faith, Sex, Love, and Politics. He has written five nonfiction works and has an internationally known syndicated advice column and podcast. In January, the Palm Springs Cultural Center partnered with the Palm Springs International Film Festival and hosted Vice President Al Gore and his follow-up 2017 documentary film, "An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power." Medical doctor and Guru, Deepak Chopra spoke to a full house at the Palm Springs Cultural Center in February. He has authored more than 85 books and is world-renowned for his message of health, healing and well-being. Proceeds from the speaker series go to support the Cultural Center and the Friends of the PS Library equally. Closing Act - Last week, award-winning, bestselling author Lisa Scottoline took the stage talking about her family, life, and working as a prolific writer. Palm Springs Public Library, Director of Library Services, Jeannie Kays introduced Scottoline. "Our guest tonight writes a legal thriller series, stand-alone novels, and co-writes humors nonfiction essays with her daughter, Francesca Serritella," said Kays. "She is our generation's Erma Bombeck. Reading her legal thriller series, you become Italian by osmosis. One of the things her novels have in common is a surprise ending." Kays welcomed Scottoline to the stage as "the queen of the plot twist." Compact, animated, fast talking, and "sunburned in paradise," Scottoline enthusiastically

6

shared her love for libraries. After pointing out her pink hue, she said not to judge her because when she left her home in Pennsylvania it was snowing. Scottoline was raised in Philadelphia. "I'm delighted and thrilled to be here," said Scottoline. "This community is so wonderful and supportive of librarians. I'm a big library fan and that's why I'm here. I want to give you some love and thanks because you don't get enough of it." Scottoline went on to tell the audience that in her large Italian family there was lots of love and food in the house, but not one book, only TV Guide. "I fell in love with books at the school library," said Scottoline. A teacher called Scottoline's parents and told them to take little Lisa to a public library. An admitted library geek, she said being with all the books was thrilling. To this day, Scottoline still knows her library card number. "It was my club," Scottoline said. "They got me. I have an emotional attachment to the number. It was an orange card and I imbued it with meaning. It was like a ticket or passport." At her library, Scottoline discovered Sherlock Holmes. "That's why I'm a mystery writer today," said Scottoline. It helped that Holmes' illustrated profile reminded her of Uncle Rocky and had a family resemble in nose size. Scottoline also shared her love for Nancy Drew. Recalling the days when books had checkout cards inside the cover, Scottoline often chose a book based on the amount and style of signatures signed on the borrower lines. A former lawyer, Scottoline knew there was a place for a woman's voice in the arena of legal thrillers and crime fiction. After the birth of her daughter and second divorce, Scottoline decided to become a fulltime writer. She struggled to make ends meet while being a single parent. And after five years of rejection, her first book was finally published. With her second book, her career took off when it won an award. Now she had a "job." Scottoline talked about where ideas for books come from saying, "It has to come from something real. Everything has to be about some emotional truth." After talking for nearly an hour – which in Scottoline time is like a two hour stand-up routine mashed into one – she sat down with librarian Keys for a Q&A where she answered questions about a career in writing. She has 30 published books so far. Her new book is After Anna. Scottoline writes two books a year and her routine is to write 2000 words a day. Insightful and forthcoming about being a chronicler of lives, she shared her truths about why art, reading and writing matter. "It's what our democracy is all about," said Scottoline. "If it is true, it connects, and if it isn't true, it doesn't. Truth has an authentic ring. That's why art matters. Libraries across this country build something more important than books. As soon as you see the truth in the art, it helps you connect to others. There is a commonality -- an art, truth and love that binds us. Libraries build community. I don't think there is anything more important to life as human beings on earth, or our democracy, than a reminder that all of us are the same." The Surprise and Coming Attractions - As the planners work on the next season, Palm Springs Speaks has added two more authors. Debbie S. Miller, nature and children's book author will celebrate the release of her new book A Wild Promise: Prince William Sound, April 23. June 7th, bestselling author and former computer programmer Andy Weir, known for his novel The Martian, which was made into the film directed by Ridley Scott starring Matt Damon. He will talk about his new book Artemis. The 2018-2019 speakers will be announced soon.

CV Culture - The Coachella Valley is filled with great things to do and the list keeps getting better. Mahatma Gandhi said: "A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people." The Palm Springs Cultural Center is a nonprofit organization that "incubates, produces and encourages arts and cultural programs in order to leverage the unique power of creativity to open minds, bridge what divides us, and discover what connects us. Its programs include film festivals, farmers' markets, live performances, art installations and lecture series – all of which act as creative inspiration points – expanding our learning and building meaningful relationships with the people and the natural environment around us." As an organization, The Palm Springs Cultural Center is also at the forefront of recognizing the interconnection between the cultural arts and food culture, and their combined importance to the vitality, collective consciousness and sustainability of the community." "Putting a series like this together takes a lot of help and support," said Green. "It couldn't happen without our generous sponsors, Board of Directors,

advisory committee and volunteers… And thanks to the planning team. It's been fun for me and for us. We are at the end, but we are also at the beginning." Palm Springs Speaks provides an opportunity for the Palm Springs Cultural Center and Friends of the Palm Springs Library to raise funds. All tickets includes a book; $150 general admission. VIP tickets are $250 and include a 6:00 to 7:00p.m. pre-event "meet and greet" with special book signing. Speaker programs begin at 7:30 p.m. For more information, and to purchase tickets, go to www.palmspringsspeaks.org

BREWTALITY

1

988 was a big year for my best friend Casey and I. Not only were we having an epic competition to see who could collect the most M.U.S.C.L.E. figures (those tiny pink wrestlers that dominated the toy market for a few seasons in the late 80’s), but Samantha Fox’s new album came out and it was fire. On top of it all, Who Framed Roger Rabbit was in theaters and come hell or high water, we were gonna take our little fannypack wearing asses to see it. Meanwhile, the microbrewery movement was starting to collect real steam as Vermont opened its first ever brewpub, Rogue Ales was founded in Oregon, and Goose Island Brewery started as a little brewpub in Chicago, IL. While I was sitting in my third-grade classroom and wracking my brain over whether the Thundercats or Silverhawks would win in a fight, IPA’s were entering a new phase in popularity. While breweries were certainly making IPAs throughout the microbrewery movement of the late 70s and early 80s, it wasn’t until 1989 that the IPA was given national legitimacy by finally being included as a style at the Great American Beer Festival. Standard Pale Ale was still king, with Sierra Nevada and Anchor Brewing both making pale ales that were considerably hoppy for the public’s taste at the time, but the IPA was about to enter a new phase of evolution. In 1996 the Stone

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com

AMERICAN IPA PART I: TASTES AND TRENDS

Brewing Co. was formed in Escondido, CA, and the company immediately set out to raise the public’s tolerance for bitterness. Stone may have launched with a pale ale, but it was their 1997 IPA debut that brought them into the spotlight. Forgoing balance and nuance in favor of an all-out hop assault on the palate, Stone IPA packed a serious 71 IBU’s into their creation, and spearheaded a trend towards aggressively bittered IPA’s in which young and veteran breweries alike tried to out-do each other in an IBU cold war that lasted over a decade. Even the names of IPA’s created in this time reflected the mindset of the era, with Green Flash’s Palate Wrecker, Rogue’s Brutal IPA, Surly’s Furious IPA, and Stone’s Ruination Double IPA, all competing in an arms-race to see who could create the most intensely flavored ale. Now, the term IBU stands for International Bittering Unit, and is the scale used to measure

a beer’s bitterness the way Scoville units are used to measure a pepper’s heat. By the mid2000s, breweries from coast to coast were using high-IBUs as a marketing tool to show the radical hopping rates of their IPAs. If that’s not a way to fatigue the palate, I don’t know what is. For years homebrewers had been experimenting with hopping all styles of beer to IPA-levels of flavor, so it is no wonder that craft breweries (by this point, the term craft brewery had replaced microbrewery as the term to describe an independently owned, small brewing company) started brewing these experimental styles of IPAs on their industrial systems. Red, Brown, and Belgian IPAs all became styles that delivered exactly what they promised; hybrid beers for hop heads (a term proudly used by IPA lovers to describe their passion for those little cone shaped flowers). Even dark ales were experimented with as the Black IPA, or Cascadian Dark Ale as it’s also known by, had its moment in the sun. So, last year I went to the Vegan Food and Beer Festival in Pasadena, and got so wasted by noon that some hippie chick twerked on me while I was passed out on a lawn chair and the staff of Babe’s Brewhouse got some good pics to document it. Most IPAs run about 6.8% ABV and higher, and will get you buzzed after just a few servings. The point is that I drank a few too many Imperial Stouts and Double IPAs, and ended up having to endure a nap of shame.

April 5 to April 11, 2018

BY AARON RAMSON Founder’s Brewing Company was a small Grand Rapids brewery that had opened in 1997 and saw considerable success with its higher alcohol stouts and dark ales, so it was quite a surprise when they started the trend of “session IPAs” with the 2010 release of the All-Day IPA. Combining high bitterness levels and extreme hopping rates with lower alcohol percentages, “session IPAs” took the country by storm, and provided IPA drinkers with a beverage they could enjoy several of without getting kablammered. I could have used a few session IPAs at Veganfest is what I’m trying to say. While Belgian IPAs and session-strength dank beers are still brewed by small companies who love the style, most subcategories of IPA eventually burned out as quickly as they gained meteoric popularity. By 2015, a new style swept the country by storm, and made brewers and fans alike forget all about Brown IPAs and Cascadian Darks. The new style was hazy, juicy, and delicious. It crushed numbers in taprooms, and by 2018, only two styles appeared to dominate the IPA; West Coast, and New England. To be continued…

WHOLE FOODS PALM DESERT 2ND ANNUAL PRE-FEST BEER GARDEN KICKSBYOFFDENISE MUSICORTUNO FESTIVALS

W

hole Foods Palm Desert will help kick off the Coachella Fest season with their 2nd Annual Pre-Fest Beer Garden on Thursday, April 12th 2018. The event will get the music fest party started with fabulous beer, food and music, all in a relaxed environment. Since opening in 2014, Whole Foods Palm Desert has been a welcomed addition to the Coachella Valley specialty market scene, providing the valley with the best in healthy food options. This year’s Pre-Fest Beer Garden, will mark the stores second entry into taking part in Coachella Fest fun. The idea was originally sparked by the Whole Foods venue team and Stone Brewery Rep, Damaris Rojas, who were thinking of ways for the high profile store to get involved with festival events, while engaging with the community. The idea was quickly supported and enthusiastically executed by Metro Marketing Team Leader, Christy Jeziorski, who has a background in event production, “I appreciated the crew entrusting me with the responsibility, it definitely gives me life to create experiences for others to enjoy” said Jeziorski. The Pre-Fest Beer Garden will be located in their outdoor patio area from 4pm to 10pm, and will welcome festival goers, locals and visitors alike. Beer garden guests will be able to enjoy a variety of beer, food and music in an inviting, casual setting, “The beer garden promises to be bigger than last year’s event,” says Jeziorski. “For a small admission fee, we’re offering an impressive variety of craft

beers and food, a stellar musical lineup, and an atmosphere that’s more chill and ‘come as you are’ than ‘who do you know?’ Consider it a Coachella welcome reception.” Event vendors include, a pop-up taqueria, Capello’s Pizza, Siete, Sierra Nevada, Coronado, Thorn, Stone, Hangar 24, Uinta, Boochcraft, BuzzBox and many more! The music lineup is equally impressive with The Flusters, Maui based Reggae, Inna Vision, Coachella Valley’s own Giselle Woo & The Night Owls and DJ Journee (Stronghold Reggae) performing. Admission to the 21 and older event is $5 and includes a tasting cup. Additional food and beverages may be purchased from Whole Foods Tap-In Taproom, to be consumed in the Beer Garden. No outside food or beverage is allowed. The Whole Foods Palm Desert 2nd Annual Pre-Fest Beer Garden is a great way to get the Coachella Valley music fest party started with fantastic beer, food and music. ‘MOTHERHOOD OUT LOUD’

“Giving birth is little more than a set of muscular contractions granting passage of a child. Then the mother is born.” ― Erma Bombeck others! Everybody’s got one. And few shows will make you appreciate the levity or the poignancy of motherhood more than “Motherhood Out Loud,” currently in production with Dezart Performs. Conceived by Susan R. Rose and Joan Stein and written by Leslie Ayvazian, Brooke Berman, Jessica Goldberg, Beth Henley, Lameece Issaq, Claire LaZebnik, Lisa Loomer, Michele Lowe, Marco Pennette, Theresa Rebeck, Luanne Rice, Annie Weisman and Cheryl L. West, the show is presented through a series of vignettes. From birth through old age, mothers who strive for perfection and mothers who just strive to make it through another day at the park, these stories are heartwarming and gut wrenching. It’s so seldom that a play can make you laugh and swell up with tears with equal measure, but this one manages to do just that. In closing out their tenth season, Dezart Performs, has brought together a top tier ensemble of talented performers. I’m starting with HENDRIX’S GYPSIES featuring drummer ALVIN TAYLOR on Friday, April 6th at WILLE BOYS in Morongo Valley. JP CERVONI on guitar reflects JIMI HENDRIX magnificently. PRINCETON ARNOLD on bass and lead vocals. Princeton’s voice is beautiful and sounds just like Jimi. Alvin has played drums for so many great legendary bands and musicians that there is no room in this article to list; GEORGE HARRISON, ERIC BURDON, ELTON JOHN, etc. Alvin just received his star on the PALM SPRINGS WALK OF STARS with a record crowd and many prominent attendees. “The second show in the series is the RONI LEE GROUP on May 5th. Roni was the lead vocalist/guitarist for VENUS AND THE RAZORBLADES. Legendary producer Kim Fowley, who created the well-known female rock band, THE RUNAWAYS, also developed Venus and the Razorblades. The well-known song “I Wanna Be Where the Boys Are” was written by Roni and was recorded and performed by both bands. This show also features BAD COMPANY former bassist and violinist LYNN SORENSEN. The incredible JULES WHELPTON, aka “THAT BLONDE BASSIST,” will also be playing bass and violin. Coming soon is DEANNA BOGART and more!” CVW: You are now involved with WILLIE BOYS. Where do you see your partnership going?

they come. Theresa Jewett’s, performances in “Queen Esther,” as the mother of a seven year old boy who wants to wear a dress and “Stars and Stripes,” as a mother whose son has gone off to war, both reached in and took hold of my heart. Melanie Blue, whose work I have admired in other productions, knocked it out of the park with her presentation of “Michael’s Date,” shedding insights into having an autistic child. Desiree Clarke’s, “My almost family,” defined poignancy, as a woman who was on the outside looking in on a family she longed to be a part of. Leanna Rodgers, “Next to the Crib,” gave new motherhood a reality check and James Owens’

“If we’re using a Surrogate, how come I’m the one with morning sickness,” was a touching slice of life moment on being a gay dad. Whether they were together in a scene or doing individual monologues, this was a talented cast taking ownership of a wonderful script. Michael Shaw’s direction was simple and perfect. The staging was weaved together seamlessly as each story transitioned into the next. Thomas L. Valach’s minimal set and Shaw’s purposeful blocking was all this play required to convey the impact of these heartfelt scenarios. I loved this show. From curtain up until curtain down, it was engaging and entertaining and just so much fun to watch. It definitely

deserved the standing ovation that closed out the opening night. “Motherhood Out Loud,” is recommended for family members of all ages, whether you’re a mother or just happen to know one, you will enjoy this show. It can be seen through April 8th, at Dezart Performs, located at the Palm Springs Women’s Club, 314 S Cahuilla Rd, Palm Springs, CA For show and ticket information: www.dezartperforms.org Dee Jae Cox is a playwright, director and producer. DAVID ROSS “THE BILL GRAHAM OF THE DESERT”

ROSS: “My official position is Entertainment and Promotions Manager. They have new ownership/management in RON WILCOX. We are working together to create the concert venue aspect. It has an expanded stage with improved sound and lighting. Its capacity is around 500 people. It was originally built by Al Capone and was a casino back in the 1920’s. It’s been around longer than any other venue in the desert. It’s 15 miles from downtown Palm Springs and takes 15 minutes to get there. It’s only four miles up the 62 freeway. Some great bands and musicians are now booked for shows such as the wonderfully talented CALISTA CARRADINE on April 20th. Our new ‘GO BOLD OR GO HOME JAM’ is going very well on Wednesday nights. Anyone can bring their instrument and jam with CRIS ALDRICH on drums, MARK ENGEL on guitar and GENE BEAVERS on bass. I’m your host of course.” CVW: You and Alvin Taylor are friends. Tell us about your brotherhood. ROSS: “Alvin inspires me by the way he never gives up on anything! He never is afraid to challenge himself and to learn something new. He asks other drummers for lessons! I mean really?? Amazing! What do others not know about Alvin? Alvin’s only bit of insecurity is (you won’t believe it) his drum playing! He is a perfectionist and comes down on himself sometimes. He smiles and knows people love his

playing, but always strives to do better. Alvin is my very very close friend and he and I have done concerts together and he has been my choice in the studio for my productions. He is one of the best drummers of our time. You just never know what Alvin Taylor and David Ross will do next! What does Alvin know about me that I wouldn’t tell? Well, that I can be a ‘pain in the ass’ and very stubborn! lol! However, when you have two very close friends that work together you are going to get to each other. Both Alvin and I advise each other and have helped each other in both our personal lives and professional lives. The key to our long friendship is Mutual Respect. Our friendship is always going to be there until we leave this earth! He calls me repeatedly ‘The Bill Graham of the Desert’. That is a very high compliment! Bill Graham was San Francisco’s Legendary Promoter. Oy!” CVW: You’ve been heavily involved in the desert music scene for a long time. What do you get out of it? ROSS: “Since 1985 I have made it my lifelong project to help local artists. I have used my famous colleagues I managed and produced, like JUNIOR WALKER and IKE TURNER, to help. The celebrity artist pulls the fans to see the local artist that I present beside them. My CV Music Show was created to do just that. I’ve had

BY NOE GUTIERREZ JEFFERSON STARSHIP, WAR, TERRY REID and other famous artists on the show and right next to them I seat our local artists. I do it because my #1 passion in life is music. Local artists are not appreciated and work so hard. I want them to be heard and seen.” CVW: In a short answer, tell us how you got to this point in your life. ROSS: “My step-son Russell Waelder said, ‘What I love most about my dad is every time he gets knocked down he always dusts himself off and ends up better than where he was before.’ I am proud of my son Russell. People always say, ‘You are so optimistic,’ to me that is how to enjoy life.” CVW: What’s next for David Ross? ROSS: “I would just like a Grammy for production! What I want most is to see musicians get what they deserve and recognition for hard work. I want to be responsible for that. Known for helping musicians is my goal. Music is my life. Since GRACE SLICK gave me my first 45 rpm record at six years old, it has been about the music. “I could not do what I do in this desert without my close and dear friends PHIL LACOMBE and TRACY DIETLIN. They have been my friends long before CV WEEKLY. They are my sponsors on everything I do. Also, my very close friend PAUL MACKEY who supports everything I do. He and FANTASY SPRINGS RESORT AND CASINO are always there. Also, my good friend and colleague producer RONNIE KING for helping me keep local musicians seen. TERRY REID & FRIENDS

B

AT BIG ROCK PUB SATURDAY, APRIL 7

ritish musician Terry Reid has performed with some of the biggest names in the music industry, as a session musician and a supporting act. He toured with the Rolling Stones, Jethro Tull, and Fleetwood Mac, to name only a few. But the man who Robert Plant once said was the best singer of his time, is a legend in his own right. He’s a musician’s musician – so thoroughly respected by his (often more commercially-successful) peers. I had the pleasure of speaking with Superlungs (as he’s aptly nicknamed) ahead of his Saturday, April 7 show at Big Rock Pub. CVW: How did you come to live in the desert? TR: “I’ve been coming here for 25 years with friends of mine who had horses at the polo grounds. A funny thing happened - we were staying at the La Quinta Resort and as I was sitting there having a drink, this guy with a thick British accent was talking and it turns out it was Eric Burdon (of War and the Animals) and I’d known him for years and years and he said he was living here, so that started a whole thing. I’d come up and see him. He’s a good egg. Two English guys in a place like this, it’s like English guys being in a Western. Old English boys love Westerns. So that’s how I started but then it became a real passion. I met my wife Annette and we got married at La Quinta Resort.” CVW: After over 50 years in the music industry, collaborating with the biggest musical acts, what still gets you excited? TR: “Has it really been that long? That’s probably about right. I was playing a gig when I was 15 and Keith Richards and Mick Jagger came to it and elected me to go on the tour with them. I was thinking, somebody’s gotta be joking here. That was the start. So what excites me now? I still enjoy what I do so much. If you don’t enjoy then don’t do it because no one will believe you! I think it’s very humbling being recognized or listened to by a lot of younger guys that are at the way top of their tree. And they’ll come up to me and go on about ‘how do you play this song?’ I’ll think they’re pulling my leg and realize they’re serious. Joe Bonamassa loves the things I do and I sold him a guitar of mine and we have become the best of friends. The other thing is I got a call from friend Jack Douglas, a producer for Aerosmith who I’ve known forever. He said Joe Perry was doing a solo album and did I wanna come throw something into it. We wrote four songs on his new album. I’m real proud of that because when you’re thrown in at the deep end amazing things will happen when the climate is right and the people are right. Joe Walsh had something he always said, ‘I don’t

know what a rock star is but I is one.’ And that’s how I feel.” CVW: Talk to me about who your “friends” are playing with you on April 7. TR: “You never know a couple people might turn up! There’s Phil Jones on drums, he used to play with Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, James Taylor... Phil and I used to have a residency playing at a place in LA called The Joint. So we started off and when everyone was in town from tour, they’d turn up and want to do a song – Keith Richards, Stevie Nicks, you never knew who’d show up – the place was always packed based on who might be there! Then there’s Jim Wilson, who is an incredible bass player, and Robert Davis on guitar. We all get on well. I love playing with these guys because if I go off on a different direction, they’ll go with me. They play that New Orleans style so they take off wherever it’s going. We’re full of surprises.” CVW: You’ve appeared on Bonnie Raitt’s albums, did you go see her last weekend at Fantasy Springs? TR: “Yes, I played with Bonnie, I’m glad you know that! A group of us called ourselves The California Club. It was me, Bonnie, Jackson Browne, Don Henley, and a few others. We all got together doing harmonies on each other’s albums.” CVW: You’ve played at BRP once before right? TR: “Yes, I played there last fall. It’s a great place! Everything sounds great when we play there. And I love Lisa too, always good to see Lisa. Hell of a singer too! A lot of girls sound like somebody else and sound similar to each other, but she has a distinctive voice.” CVW: What can fans expect at your BRP show? TR: “I have no clue what’s going to happen. It’s always a surprise to me that people are familiar with what I’ve done. I guess you could say I have a cult following. I play things from different albums I’ve done. On top of that, it’s an opportunity to do something you wouldn’t necessarily hear that I love. I like to play the roots of what inspired me to write songs in the first place.” To find out more about the Terry Reid and Friends show at Big Rock Pub on Saturday, April 7, use this link: thebigrockpub.com/ entertainment

wo years ago, Keisha D sang “Summertime” at the Celebrity Jazz Jam and blew me away. I have never been so impressed with a singer/entertainer in my life. Think Barbara Streisand on steroids! At the last Jazz Soiree she performed it again with Blake Aaron (Chart topping recording artist and guitarist), Michael Paulo (Sax Superstar), Hans Zermuehlen on keys, and Darryl Williams on bass, and she got a standing ovation. It reminded me just how amazing this woman is and to this end, I am now honored to be her manager. My goal is to see her rise to the top. It’s not like she’s never been there before. She started singing at 12 with her mother, Jacqualine Mimms, and her mother also trained her. Barbara Streisand and Etta James were teo of the vocalists that her mother used for her mentoring. She also trained her to sing everything Acapella so that she would never have to worry about the music. They toured the country as a duet singing gospel for thousands of people. She honed her craft and performance and over the last 15 years has become the leading female vocalist of Palm Springs. After winning the McCallum ‘Open Call’ in 2008 as Best Vocalist, she began getting calls from those that saw her. Brian Wanzek (Bella De Ball) is one of her biggest supporters and she has performed many times with his show. She performs regularly around town and does a lot of private parties. Her fan club President is none other then Mayor Moon of Palm Springs. Every time she performs her fan base gets bigger and bigger. She recently did a 20 minute show for the Cathedral City Pride LBGT event for 800 people and got another standing ovation for “Summertime.” People lined up afterwards for over an hour to ask for her autograph and to get a CD. She was recently booked for a big show at the Copa Nightclub in Palm Springs on May 11. If you’ve never seen Keisha D, she not only has the most incredible voice you’ve heard but she dresses to the nines for every gig, big or small. So we’ve decided to step up the band she performs with and she will now be playing with some of the “A List” performers in the industry. Let’s start with her drummer Alvin Taylor, this gifted man is the leading drummer in the music industry from George Harrison to Elton John, he’s performed and recorded with the biggest names in the music industry (Cher, Natalie Cole, Sly & the Family Stone, and Bill Withers just to name a few). He approached Keisha and said he’d love to play with her because he loves her

style, and his first love is jazz. He recently got a Star on the Walk of Palm Springs. She is blessed to have him. Her new keyboard player is Hans Zermuehlen, who was formerly with Air Supply and plays with every “A List” act in the smooth jazz genre; Rick Braun, Jeff Lorber, Steve Oliver, Kirk Whalum, Dave Koz, Mindi Abair, Brian Simpson, Blake Aaron, Michael Lington, and Will Donato just pick a name, he’s probably played with them. Her bass player is Darryl Williams, who’s own song just hit #1 on the smooth Jazz charts, he is also the #1 bass player in the smooth jazz industry; Euge Groove, Gerald Albright, Peter White, Dave Koz, Norman Brown and the list goes on. When he isn’t available, it will be Andrew Ford who is Chaka Khan’s bass player. (Also, Al Jarreau, Whitney Houston, David Crosby, Barry Manilow, George Duke, Gladys Knight, James Ingram, Dianne Reeves, Michael McDonald and more.) Her sax player is Greg Vail, who’s sold over 2 million CDs. So let’s put it this way, you will get a first class national act show when you hear Keisha D and her band. You will also get an entertainer who will bring you to your feet as she does every time she performs. Keisha is not only a singer, but a performer. Every show is exciting and special and she never fails to get a standing ovation. Keisha is no longer a local act; she is on her way to stardom. We are in already in talks on a recording deal with producers for a new CD and starting to set up her bookings in different jazz venues around the state. If you’d like to get on her email list text your name and email to 702-2196777. For tickets to her May 11, Copa show, call them at (760) 866-0021 or visit their website at CopaPalmSprings.com. For bookings contact Patte Purcell 1-702219-6777. Get ready to be amazed. After this article was written it was announced that Keisha D has been nominated for Best Jazz Vocals, Best Adult Contemporary Artist and Best R&B Artist for the 2018 CV Music Awards to be held June 3 at Hard Rock Hotel PS. LOCAL MUSIC SPOTLIGHT

T

he early 2000s were an interesting time for desert music. The scene had never been bigger in terms of international notoriety. Kyuss was over. Queens Of The Stone Age were ruling the airwaves, and the scene had never been stronger. There was no shortage of amazing music. The Hellions were going strong, Ming Tran was killing it, Unida was representing our desert internationally, The Wisemen were on top of the scene, punk rock was thriving with The Wreckage who would morph into The Traces… and who can forget about Family Butcher? Family Butcher wasn’t a show, it was an event. This was also the era of The Whizards. The Whizards is the brainchild of multiinstrumentalist Mike Pygmie. There were some early versions of the band, but they really solidified with the line-up of Billy Cordell on bass, Benny Cancino Jr. on drums, and Mike Pygmie on Guitar, vocals, and yes… turntables. Most people will associate turntables with the rap/rock movement of the early 2000s, but I can assure you, that is not what The Whizards were - or should I say are? The Whizards reputation in the local scene and regionally grew to astronomical proportions. They were a musician’s band. They were exactly what our scene needed. Their talent caught the eye of a few labels, but they were waiting for the right deal to come around. Before they signed a deal, the band broke up do to other opportunities and the rollercoaster of life. Fast forward to 2016. I approached Mike at a show after his band You Know Who had played. Jamie Hargate from The Hellions sort of gave me the courage to do it. I had a local label, Ruined Vibes, and had a couple pretty big bands on my label. I had just helped The Hellions release their debut album on vinyl. Thanks to Jamie, I felt like maybe I was established enough to ask Mike about The Whizards. I found out The Whizards never officially released any music, and were sitting on what Mike thought was an EP. After a “let me talk to the guys,” and some research, we found that there was actually a full length album, and all three members were up for finally releasing it. This was a long road for me. The Whizards were a genre bending band that I loved when I was in my early 20s. I loved the desert rock scene, but was heavily involved in the desert rave scene. Turntablism was one of my favorite types of music. One night while at Arthur Seay’s place, I was sitting in my friend Jesse’s rehearsal spot. I heard amazing music emanating from next door one minute, and scratching the next. I was instantly intrigued and totally hooked. Now, 15 years or so later, I was releasing The Whizards album. After well over a decade, The Whizards are making their return. So far, this is a one of kind show made possible by CV Weekly and Ruined Vibes. On Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 8pm, The Hood Bar and Pizza will be hosting the return. The lineup also includes long-time friends, The Hellions, their producer, Brad Garrow’s band, Brain Vat, and Mike’s bandmate in Mondo Generator and legendary QOTSA bassist Nick Oliveri. There will be 2 versions of the LP available, and just released through Hollywoodland Records, their debut album on CD. The CD is exclusively available through Palm Springs Vinyl and Collectibles and on Amazon. There will also be some amazing surprises. Coachella Valley Weekly: How did the The

THE RETURN OF THE WHIZARDS

Whizards form? Benny Cancino Jr.: (Pointing at Mike Pygmie) “It started with him. He’s the mastermind. He had the Whizards. We were doing other stuff.” Mike Pygmie: “Well, there was a ‘pre’ Whizards. I wouldn’t call it ‘THE’ Whizards. It was a good band. It was Jeff Bowman on drums, Jon Weigand on bass, Charlie Ellis on guitar and keyboards and myself.” Billy Cordell: “It was a blend of Mighty Jack in a way.” Pygmie: “Yeah, that’s why it was more of a ‘pre’ Whizards. It was a great band and I’m super proud of it, but The Whizards is us. This line-up. I loved playing with those dudes. It was more of a band situation though. You know? You get into a room with everybody and compromise. That’s the right thing to do. With these guys, I didn’t feel like we compromised, we were on the same page. We all knew what we wanted to do. Billy was the first of the current line up.” Cordell: “I was in it with Charlie and Jeff, then I scared them away. We were heading in a different direction than where they wanted to go. Broken Bass was written, and it wasn’t where they wanted to be. Charlie left, and Jeff followed.” Pygmie: “There was one show in particular where at the last minute, Jeff couldn’t do it, so I reached out to Benny. He learned the songs and really killed it. We knew instantly he was in the band. We didn’t tell him at first though.” Cancino: “It’s still that way. I’m still asking, ‘hey man, am I still in the band?’” CVW: What were you doing before joining The Whizards Benny? Cancino: “I worked at this restaurant, and the manager played guitar. We jammed for a little bit. I was jamming in Allied Elements. It was a hip hop group.” Pygmie: “That’s how we met. They were jamming with me at my house. I remember thinking, ‘he’s a really good drummer, but I want to drum for this band. KB was in it. He did the vocals on our song, Dedication. So I kept him on the back burner.” Cancino: “Yeah! I remember that. Fucking asshole. I was uncomfortable there.” Pygmie: “Yeah. You could tell. Haha.” Cordell: “That’s where it really morphed into this...” Cancino: “It was on then. It was like each guy was two people. Like parliament! It was layered with Mike looping, singing, playing guitar, and the turntables. Billy played so fast, it was like two bassists.” CVW: What were you coming off of Billy? Cordell: “I think I was playing with Zu. That was Chris Hale and Brady Houghton from Slow Burn.” CVW: How did you guys rise in popularity so fast? Cancino: “They didn’t have a choice.” Cordell: “We annihilated every show!” Pygmie: “We were just shoving down

everybody’s throats to be honest. My favorite thing about The Whizards was playing out of town. We would show up and load in our gear. They would immediately see the turntables and be like, ‘woah. What’s this? Some Limp Bizkit shit or what?’ We’d be like, ‘yeah. Whatever dude.’ And then destroy the club. We’d almost feel guilty about it. We would fuck up their local scene. It was their scene until we played. We had good songs. Whether people got it or not, we did it.” Cancino: “We were musician’s musicians. The bands who were on the bill will us were blown away.” Pygmie: “Yeah. That was very flattering. That’s the ultimate compliment. If I could do anything, I wanted other bands to want to check us out.” CVW: Okay. I get it. You guys were good. Geez. You guys did blend genres. No matter what genre somebody was into, you guys nailed it. Dedication is a full on hip hop song. You guys had this record. Were you shopping it? Pygmie: “We recorded what we thought was a demo, but it turned into a record…” Cancino: “Because of Jason it turned into a record!” Pygmie: “Regardless of if somebody was going to put it out, we were recording this record.” Cordell: “Brad’s (Garrow) studio was fresh

BY JASON HALL too. We were the first to record there.” Pygmie: “A lot of thought and love went into that record, not only from us, but from Brad. It was a magical experience. Immediately after recording it, Rotten Records offered us a deal. We waited on it. We shopped it a bit, but nothing else happened. I looked back often and thought we should have taken that deal because at least then it would be out.” CVW: Personally, I’m glad you didn’t! Pygmie: “Exactly. Now I’m extremely happy. Now it IS out. On our terms with our friends. That’s exactly how it needed to come out.” Cancino: “No legal mumbo jumbo. We still own our music. It’s out. It’s a great record.” Cordell: “Now we get to play again and annihilate The Hood!” Pygmie: “Just like old times.” CVW: How did we end up where we are? Album is out, and you guys are playing a show for the first time in a decade? Pygmie: “Jason put it out there. The band never left my mind. Jason sparked that memory. These dudes were into it. Initially, we thought there were only 6 songs, but when I approached Brad, he had 8 songs. We were initially going to put it out on Ruined Vibes as a 10’, but it was too long. We made an album out of it. It was crazy. We heard it for the first time in years, and now we’re playing it.” CVW: Everybody wants to know, is this a one off or are you open to playing more? Pygmie: “There’s definitely a chance. It depends on the people. If they want to see us, we’ll maybe play more shows. We will be playing the longest set we’ve ever played at this show.” The Whizards at The Hood on Saturday, April 7 @8:00pm with Brain Vat, The Hellions and special guest Nick Oliveri. $5.00 cover.

LOCAL MUSIC SPOTLIGHT GENE EVARO JR. SET TO RELEASE LIKE IT’S 1965!

RECORD RELEASE PARTY THIS FRI. APRIL 6 @ PAPPY & HARRIET’S (OUTDOOR) 8 PM

G

ene Evaro, Jr., one of the hardest working, creative and prolific independent musicians of his generation, will release his 12th album in 11 years at the open air, outdoor concert venue that is uniquely Pappy and Harriet’s. After selling out multiple shows on the iconic, indoor stage, there will be ample room for the masses under the Pioneertown stars to experience the soulful, groovy feels that only Gene Evaro Jr. and band can bring. Like the title song, the band and all in attendance will be celebrating, “Like It’s 1965.” “Like it’s 1965 is a reference to a vibe of being sexy, free spirited, open minded and youthful,” says Evaro Jr. “The title song is all about feeling good with the person you’re with. The album and the album art represent my feelings that the same spirit that was alive in the 60’s is now flowing back into the mainstream. And not just mainstream music, but culture in this country in general. We see it in the examples of young people being more proactive in politics, civil rights promises being revisited and corrected, woman’s rights being asserted, the demand for equal rights for all sexual orientations, even with people caring about the planet. Music is good again!” “The cover art for the album is a picture of me with a multicolored version of the American flag, because in my naive opinion, it’s time that we quickly, reimagine this country. This could be a new flag. We need it! Symbolically, it is one that is vibrant and represents a multiconscience - one that doesn’t just signify blood, purity and justice, but one that includes and celebrates multiple races, viewpoints, and multiple languages. The idea is that this country is changing! A lot of people are afraid and will do everything they can to resist this change. But we, as young people, aren’t scared. We are excited and motivated. Anyway, that’s my 3 cents.” A staple at the Joshua Tree Music Festival, Gene Evaro Jr. has shared stages and toured with popular artists Milky Chance, Elle King, Blues Traveler and many others, building a fanbase throughout the US as well as Brazil and Australia. Still, he has never forgotten where he came from and his fanbase at home grows solidly every year. Just this past December, Evaro Jr. and bandmates made time to give back to their high desert hometown when they hosted a benefit concert for the Yucca Valley High School Select Choir. He and his bandmates donated 100% of the proceeds of their show to the students to help them meet the 60k cost of the choir’s Washington, D.C. Spring Tour. Those of us who have followed and been moved by Evaro Jr.’s music, are sitting on the edge or our seats, waiting and watching for this deserving artist to see his greatest dreams come to fruition. Gene Evaro Jr. Today: “I’m hungrier now more than ever,” he shared. “Hungry to be around more people like me. I guess I am getting older and less excited to waste my time with people or vibes that don’t better me or my heart. When I was younger, I wanted to be everything for everyone. It’s different now. Mostly because I’m not satisfied with my musicianship; I’m not satisfied with my voice; I’m not satisfied with my songs. Music is the best reflection of me, and sometimes looking in the mirror is hard, but lately I’ve

been looking at it a lot more. I’ve been doing something about the things that I don’t like. You could say, I am growing.” Holding it All Together: Gene Evaro Jr.’s story as a man and an artist has its deep heartaches and difficult changes, all of which are sorted out, it would seem, in his songs – painstakingly, honestly bled songs. “Yea, the music tends to be honest. Bands are hard to keep together (much like a family). The truth is most of our band members from the last few years are no longer playing with us. And as of last week, Clint our sax player, can’t play with us because of a medical condition. So, it’s basically just me and Piper who have really stuck to this project. We feel blessed to have played with all the wonderful people we’ve played with as a band. The truth about a lot of things in life is you gotta surround yourself with people that not only want to be a part of something bigger, but who are committed to bettering themselves as people, musically and personally. Sometimes growing means growing apart from each other. That’s a beautiful truth that every parent must accept when they have a child that grows up; it’s a life lesson for all, I think. Change is a beautiful thing.” So how, in a world where relationships fall apart under the best of circumstances, do Gene Evaro, Jr. and bass goddess, Piper Robison, keep their connection healthy and thriving in one of the toughest industries around? “I make her coffee, she makes my tea,” laughs Gene Jr. “We both want this as much as the next musician/band, but more importantly, we are willing to put in the work to make it happen. Being a musician almost comes secondary to all the other things that are required of you if you want to be heard above the noise of all the other amazing artists and talent out there in the world. We work extremely well together on a lot of levels. I think the sheer work ethic is what we have most in common, and is what keeps this working. We see amazing musicians and artists out there in the world and want to contribute, not just stay the same or chill on it. Nothing is guaranteed except for the fact that if you give it your all, then you’ve barely begun.” Has he ever felt like quitting? “I feel like quitting every time I watch a 5-year-old girl play guitar better than I ever will,” shares Evaro Jr. “I feel like quitting any time I see a band play the music I can only dream of playing. I feel like

quitting every time someone talks over one of my songs. But I don’t quit. It’s just my ego saying ‘OUCH!’ But those moments are weak compared to the dream, if that makes sense. I turn that average disposition into action.” The New Album: Evaro Jr. says, “I think it’s better than the last. It has more songs about Piper, believe it or not,” he offered, tongue-in-cheek. “We’ve gone through a lot together and It’s hard not to have that leave an impression on my music. It has more electronic elements for sure. It has a song written by our former trombone player, Scott Kisinger, called “Attention”. And it talks a lot about who I am growing into.” The Wildest Dream: With the promotion of the new record as his current primary focus, the big show at Pappy and Harriet’s, a tour with Moonchild, and some Canadian tour prospects on the horizon, Evaro Jr. never loses sight of his wildest dream nor does he quit working to bring it to life. “My wildest dream? I write that song I’ve been trying to write since forever that connects with the world. I win multiple Grammys. I form and run my own label and can be as creative as I am now without the financial limitations that currently shape how and when we do things. I can buy my mom a house by the beach. I can call the best directors and afford to have them on my team. I can call on people like Chance The Rapper, Kendrick Lamar or Stephen Colbert and make cool shit happen anytime. I can pitch my movie ideas to reputable productions. I can help my other family members with any opportunities

that I have. I can make a lot of money and build a badass music venue in Joshua Tree. We can start a foundation that donates money to independent bands that are badass and need help financially (without wanting to own them forever). I can start a hotel chain for touring bands where you can rehearse, check in at 6 in the morning… you know - some basic things like that.” The upcoming show: “We are so grateful for everyone’s support and feel blessed to be able to create and play music for a living. Friday, April 6th, at Pappy and Harriet’s, will be memorable for more reasons than one. My sister, Gabriella Evaro, will be opening up the night with her own music at 8pm.” Gabriella Evaro is a multi-Instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter. She is the lead singer of Earth Moon Earth, Dream Pop Experimental Synth, and the desert duo, Lucky Bones with Chris Unck. She is also the creator and designer of “The Cactus Wine Experience”, a unique, musical, wild west burlesque production. LUKAS NELSON & PROMISE OF THE REAL (FANTASY RECORDS)

S

ometimes making music is a biological imperative, it can’t be denied. But if it’s the family business, that’s when things can get tricky. No one wants to be accused of riding on someone else’s coattails. Nepotism can be a dirty word, but if you have the goods to back it up, ultimately, it shouldn’t matter if your father (rather famously) plays music too. Lukas Nelson doesn’t run from his musical legacy, he embraces it. Born in 1988 to Willie Nelson and his fourth (and final) wife Annie, his childhood was spent on tour buses surrounded by musicians and copious amounts of weed. He and his brother Micah were invited on stage almost as soon as they could walk, adding percussion to classic songs like “Whisky River” and “On The Road Again.” The family split their time between Hawaii and Texas. Honoring a birthday request of his dad’s, Lukas began learning guitar as a kid. Much to his mother’s dismay, he began smoking weed before puberty hit. He really pissed her off when he took some to school. An indifferent student, he asked to join his dad’s band at age 13, and he began touring fulltime as Willie’s rhythm guitarist. That hands-on experience proved invaluable and for the next few years he honed his chops onstage in front of millions of fans. Once he came of age, he attended college in Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount as a music major. But his matriculation was brief; he lasted just two years before dropping out. Around this time, he met Anthony Logerfo at a Neil Young concert. The pair connected over their mutual love of Neil. They quickly cemented that bond the same evening by going surfing at midnight. Before the night was over they decided to form a band. Promise Of The Real takes their name from a Neil Young deep cut, “Walk On.” The specific lyric that inspired; “Some get stoned, some get strange/But sooner or later it all gets real.” By 2008 they had recruited Tato Melgar on percussion and Merlyn Kelly on bass. (A couple years in, Merlyn left and Corey McCormick took his place). Later

additions included Jesse Sibenberg on steel guitar and Farfisa organ and Alberto Bof on piano, Wurlitzer and Hammond B3 organ. A road dog like his dad, Lukas and the lads honed their chops through relentless touring. Their eponymous debut was self-released and arrived in digital form in 2010. Two years later the Wasted album appeared. Each year that loyal fan base increased, but the band continued to fly under the radar. They served as an opening act for heavy hitters like B.B. King and John Fogerty, but it wasn’t until they jammed with Neil Young at the 2014 edition of Farm Aid that the five-piece began to gain national attention. Farm Aid was a collaboration that began in the mid ‘80s between Willie, Neil and John Mellecamp. It was a way to assist struggling American farmers. The annual concerts brought together Country and Rock musicians for a common charitable cause. Neil tapped POTR to back him on his 2015 concept album, The Monsanto Years. That alliance continued on the road, Lukas and the guys eagerly memorized at least 80 Neil Young songs. Their incredible prowess is evident on Neil’s 2016 live effort, “Earth.” That same year, the five-piece released their third album, Something Real, and returned to the road to support it. They also backed Neil for his historic Desert Trip dates. Now POTR has returned with their fourth studio album and their first on a major label, Fantasy. The Bay Area label started in 1949 and was originally known as the home of Jazz musicians like Vince Guaraldi and Dave Brubeck. It really became a force in Rock N’ Roll in the mid ‘60s when it signed Creedence Clearwater Revival. Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real (the title so nice, they used it twice), opens with the one-two punch of “Set Me Down On A Cloud” and “Die Alone.” The former is a sanctified Gospel stomp powered by stentorian guitar, lurching organ runs and woozy synths. Lukas’ warm vocal style is a reedier version of his Dad’s famous nasal twang. Reeling from romantic disappointment, he confides “my heart’s still bleeding.” On the extended instrumental epilogue his blistering guitar solo shapeshifts, echoing the expressive styles of Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend and the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan. The latter is a rollicking soul-shouter wed to a rock steady beat. A country-funk kissin’ cousin to AC/DC’s “Long Way To The Top,” it blends fluttery organ, stinging guitar licks and circuitous piano notes. The lyrics pay homage to a lady love who “makes me eggs in the morning, at night she brings me tea/Those little things that never mattered much now mean the world to me.” Lukas describes the band’s sound as Cowboy Hippie Surf Rock, and that kindasorta covers it. Three tracks manage cobble together these disparate styles (and more), creating a heady sonic brew. If Jimmy Buffett and Little Feat got together with some Mad

Dogs and Englishmen, it might sound a little like “Fool Me Once.” Gut-bucket guitar speed-shifts through a propulsive, vaguely tropical rhythm; the zippy arrangement belies the lyrics’ inherent sadness. “Carolina” continues the breezy mood, extoling a beachy-beer soaked escapism, insisting “If my baby doesn’t love me I’m going to Carolina tonight.” Acoustic and electric guitars connect over plangent piano and a sly conga rhythm. Meanwhile “Find Yourself” extends the Jam band vibe with a distinct Allman Joy flavor. A chunky backbeat acts as foundation, as the band layers in scabrous guitar licks, tensile bass, pounding piano, vibrant organ colors and soulful, yet pithy backing vocals. Lukas’ gritty vocal delivery underscores bitter disappointment as he bluntly declares “I hope you find yourself before I find somebody else to be my lover.” The band locks into an extended groove and the instrumental break spotlights Lukas’ trenchant guitar work, recalling the fraternal gunslinger action of both Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan. The call-and-response interplay between Lukas and the back-up singer is electric. It’s a pleasant surprise to discover the singer is Lady Gaga (ne Stefani Germanotta). The pair became friends when Lukas provided music for the Bradley Cooper re-boot of “A Star Is Born” which stars Cooper and Germanotta. The best tracks here take the listener to unexpected places by completely coloring outside the lines, (sort of a family tradition). In fact, “Just Outside Of Austin” is something of a family affair, with Lukas’ Aunt Bobbie on keys and Willie reining in his trademark Trigger licks. A pastoral charmer, the melody leans in to an effortless, Burt Bacharach/ Jimmy Webb sound. “Four Letter Word” splits the difference between party anthem and shaggy dog saga. POTR swaggers with bar band brio that borders on Dylanesque. Blistering guitar licks collide with caustic pedal steel notes. Efficacious lyrics detail a case of buyer’s remorse from a pair of footloose newlyweds; “My independence called me from a pay phone far away, he said listen man I’m worried you ain’t never been this way/And I get antsy, real commitment seems absurd, out here in the country, Forever is a four letter word.” “Breath Of My Baby” is surprisingly tender; a twangy torch song that opens up

with some (unironic) whistling. Pedal steel accents, brushed percussion and a lush string section cradle this heartfelt encomium; “We live in a world where evil never sleeps, nothing makes me feel stronger nothing gives me more peace/Then the breath of my baby when she peacefully sleeps.” Lukas’ songwriting runs the gamut from economical to expansive. On the record’s centerpiece, “Forget About Georgia,” the lyrics offer a concise treatise on the everlasting agony of heartache; “…She told me her name and I knew I would die slowly, I knew I was destined to live with this pain every night/For each night I stand with my father playing out music, we cry out her name and her memory under the lights….and each night I pray I’ll forget about Georgia.” Even as he revels in emotion, the melody and arrangement slowly expands, adding weeping pedal steel, lapping percussion and a beautiful instrumental coda featuring a meandering guitar solo that lasts nearly four minutes. Conversely, on “Running Shine,” the music is spare and bare bones, anchored by sun-dappled acoustic guitar, searing pedal steel, rattlesnake percussion and rippling banjo from brother Micah. Lukas effortlessly slips into the skin of a 21st century bootlegger, skirting the law but still looking for love. The opening couplets are rich with detail; “My grandfather died up in the hills of Appalachia working on a submarine still, they found him while the mash was still fermenting in the boiler, his back against an oak up on a Hill/ And luckily my father knew and I could learn a thing or two ‘bout and securing revenue, keeping with the changing times, dodging governmental fines, trying to stay alive like people do. Alive, doing fine, running shine.” There’s such a specificity and verisimilitude to the story that is comparable to not just Willie, and Texas songwriters like Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle, but also novelists like Flannery O’Connor and Elmore Leonard. Short and sweet, the song clocks in at just over three minutes, but it offers a master class in compact song craft. Other interesting tracks include the Glam/ Metal blast of “High Times,” which offers pointed political commentary aimed at both the left and the right. The album closes with “If I started Over.” Metaphysical and piano driven, it plays out in ¾ time, wondering “What if we are all just dreaming, how would we deal with our pain, would we be playing these sad little games destined to come here again and again?” A philosophical end to a nearly perfect record. Despite his pedigree, Lukas and Promise Of The Real have truly paid their dues. Their fourth effort is packed with indelible melodies and sharp, insightful, often funny lyrics. With this album they’ve completely arrived, and it was well worth the wait.

MELODY COHN LEADING THROUGH ART

H

eroes come in all guises. Melody Cohn is one such hero. She is an artist who sees past the canvas. Melody is deeply involved in the Coachella Valley. As Co-Art Director for the Healthy Family Foundation’s Ophelia Project, she is a mentor for the project encouraging teenage girls to achieve their full potential and build up their self-esteem. The Ophelia Project reaches 750 girls in 15 schools and 3 school districts. But she does not stop there. Melody is the Secretary of the La Quinta Art Association, a nonprofit organization of artists working together and promoting art with children. Melody is as a docent for the Indian Wells Art Festival. Melody is a certified Chakradance facilitator, a moving meditation with healing chakra energy. Perhaps that is where her community spirit comes from and where her artistic inspiration is borne. “I am a spiritual being. I know that when we listen to our inner world we find the lighthouse within and we shine out to the universe,” noted Melody. That light emanates in her charitable work and in her paintings should be no surprise. “As an artist my work has evolved from Acrylic to Batik to Watercolor on Canvas,” continued Melody “It was my studies with Master Artist Bruce Thomas of Palm Desert, owner of Aerie Art Garden, that I learned the watercolor on canvas technique. I continue to explore this technique and continue to take it to new levels with my own unique and colorful style.” Her work is a mixture of metaphysical reality. Like all artwork, Melody captures a moment and by embracing that moment her expressions of love and light comes forth. The work can be seen at her studio in La Quinta, at Mystical Awakenings on 73151 El Paseo, Palm Desert, CA and at Courtyard Gallery 54240 Ridgeview Drive, Idyllwild CA. She will be participating in the upcoming First Friday art walk, on April 6. The works featured at Mystical Awakenings are important to Melody for many reasons. “These pieces attribute works of art are my expressions of the awakenings of my spiritual growth. They come from the heart through art and from meditations with the chakras,” noted Melody. “The paintings of the group dancers

are a part of a collection that I am working on. These are part of my Chakradance Series. There are four other pieces that will complete the series. Each dance carries the vibration of each chakra as such each dance is entirely different. Dancing and facilitating the Chakradance has assisted me in my life spiritually and has helped me to achieve my greatest dreams.” While Melody’s art is influence by love she feels blessed to share her love for the arts and community with her husband Gideon. The two met, not coincidently at Gideon’s former Gallery in Palm Springs. Married since 2012, the two continue their creative efforts in their Point Happy Studio in La Quinta Ca. Heroes are admired for noble qualities that are but dreams of many. Melody expresses her dreams thought her artistic and charitable work. It is these noble qualities that make her a local hero. Melody continues to giving through her works and leads by example that art empowers. For more information Melody Cohn visit www.Images-Gallery.com

POTTY TRAINING IS POSSIBLE!

M

y dog, Scarlett O’Hara, was rescued from an animal hoarder in Hemet who kept 135 dogs and 35 cats in a small house. The process of potty training Scarlett proved to be a serious challenge as these animals relieved themselves almost exclusively inside the house. For a while, Scarlett and I were homebound with only limited visits to friends and family. Scarlett seemed to pick the most exclusive spots to go. One day I happily realized, “It’s been a month with no accidents!” Luckily, most dogs are easier than Scarlett to house train. If you adopt an adult dog from a shelter or rescue, they may or may not been house trained in their previous homes. However, if they were confined to a concrete kennel for any length of time, they may require a “refresher” training session. Young puppies under 6 months of age need to relieve themselves more frequently. A good supply of puppy pads may be helpful at this stage. “Paper training” on newspaper is a more inexpensive solution. Puppies normally need to eliminate just after eating and just after waking up from a nap, so this is the time to get them outside. DOGGY DOORS - The ideal situation is a doggy door that provides easy access to a fenced in yard. Call your puppy and use treats to tempt

him through the opening while holding up the doggy door flap. If you have a dog already, he is the best teacher to show the new arrival the proper procedure. Dogs are pack animals and will follow the example set by the others. A small plot of artificial grass can do the trick if you have a cement patio or balcony. SCHEDULED WALKS - The challenge comes when you live in an apartment without a fenced in yard. Try to keep to a set schedule. Dogs need at least 3 walks daily. A young puppy may need to be walked every couple hours. Make it fun by exploring different areas and include community dog parks for increased exercise. Encourage your pet to eliminate in the same area outside. “Go potty” and “go poop” will become part of your training vocabulary, and your dog will learn to associate these words with appropriate action. When the dog pees or poops outside, make a big fuss of him with praise and petting. Try not to be overly anxious about your dog’s training……When the human is overly zealous about their dog having an accident this can actually lead to more accidents. ACCIDENTS - When you catch your pup relieving himself in the wrong place, use a firm voice “No, don’t pee there.” Immediately take him to the newspaper or outside where he is supposed to eliminate. If you become angry or

punish him, he will only learn to sneak off and go where you can’t see him. If you find the mess after he’s already gone, pick up the poop with a tissue, put the dog on a leash and head outside, putting it in the spot where he should go. Praise not punishment is the key to success. NATURE’S MIRACLE - This handy product in a white spray bottle with red lettering saves the day and the carpet. It contains enzymes that eliminate pet stains and odors, and this is important to discourage the pet from going in the same area again. For massive cleanups, use a mixture of white vinegar and water with 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar. CRATE TRAINING - My research showed there is still some controversy over the use of crating dogs for potty training and other purposes. In any case, an animal should not be crated for longer than 4 or 5 hours.

MORE TIPS - Get an expandable “baby gate” available at Home Depot or PetSmart, and block the dog off in the tiled kitchen or bathroom area. This works well for those occasions when you leave the house for an extended time. The animal can see out and does not feel so confined. Usually the dog won’t relieve himself in a small room, thinking of the area as his “den”. Another idea is to put an untrained dog on a long leash and hook the leash handle under a heavy coffee table or dining room table. The dog will feel like he’s still part of the family, but won’t go potty within the confined area. For challenging cases, try the umbilical method where you keep the dog on a harness and lead attached to your waist. What if you’re going to visit fastidious relatives with white carpet and no patience if Benji has an accident? For those occasions, you can get a “male wrap” a cloth garment with Velcro, and place a sanitary pad inside for extra absorbency. Male wraps and diapers for female dogs are available in various sizes at PetCo and PetSmart. Be patient and diligent and success will come. The internet is full of additional advice on this and other dog training issues. You will soon enjoy a “puddle free” home! jmcafee7@verizon.net

THE VINO VOICE

BY RICK RIOZZA

CHEF BRANDON TESTI--BACK IN TOWN!

F

or many of us, the last time we enjoyed the created cuisine of food artiste Brandon Testi—now the Executive Chef at the newly opened AC3 Restaurant +Bar in Palm Desert—he was taking the honors as Top Chef in the valley’s famed Crater Lake Chef’s Challenge. For those who sampled his delectable delights, they were privy to partaking of Crater Lake distilled-themed dishes such as Crater Lake Rye Whiskey Cold Smoked Duck Breast, CL Whiskey Drunk Brussel Sprouts, Crater Lake Gin Infused Seafood Sausage “Faux Mortadella” prepared with salmon and scallop, pistachio, baby root vegetables, and, CL Ginger Vodka Pumpkin brûlée, to name a few bites. And of course, side by side to his inventive cookery is presentation, such as when he staged his Crater Lake Vodka Heirloom Tomato Caprese, with local heirloom tomatoes, balsamic caviar, CL Vodka vinaigrette, tomato and CL Pepper Vodka foam, mixed micro basics, and nitrogen basil snow and burrata, all layed out smoking on a sheet of slate! We saw his Crater Lake Pepper Vodka Egg Benedict Deconstructed and served on a crafty carved piece of wood; and how about when he presented a glass lid on a tree bark charger filled with smoke, when lifted, revealed the beautifully presented rib eye, sliced and surrounded by pearled barley, black trumpet mushrooms, bacon, kale lollipops and more. At that time, Brandon was the Chef de Cuisine at the Omni Rancho Las Palmas bluEmber. I recall interviewing and getting to know him just before he and Executive Chef Robert Nyerick put on one of the year’s tastiest winemaker dinners featuring the famed Santa Rita Hills wine of Dierberg & Star Lane Vineyards. Chef Brandon’s star value soon prompted him on the auction block at one of the valley’s celebrated charitable events: Chef Auction for the Pendleton Foundation which assists cancer patients & families. As things go with the busyness of the culinary scene, the next thing I hear, Chef Brandon had headed off to Austin, Texas. I kept in touch with him on Facebook, following his aims at Second Bar + Kitchen at The Archer Hotel and Snap Kitchen. The day after AC3’s Ribbon Cutting

Ceremony, my side-kick sommelier, Jenna Lepper, and I sat with Chef Brandon for lunch to catch-up on things. As the foodie cognoscenti is quickly finding out, AC3 Restaurant + Bar is a collaboration of two of the valley’s best restaurants, Trio Restaurant and Copley’s On Palm Canyon. I asked Chef Brandon about this collaboration and his involvement with Chef Andrew Copley and Restaurateur Tony Marchese. “Yeah—I got to know Chef Andrew during those Crater Lake throwdowns, and he told me then that we’d be doing something sooner or later.” Well—that brain-child has just come to fruition. AC3 sits within the purview of the new Hotel Paseo, Palm Desert’s newest luxury boutique hotel located on Larkspur Lane, right across from the iconic Gardens at El Paseo’s open-air mall. It’s pretty telling about Chef Brandon’s professional character and integrity by the fact that he headed out to Austin, when he was riding high in these parts. He really had no previous Texas ties but he went on an adventure to join in on the resurging Austin City Limits culinary scene. Among the other traditional and stylish cookery trends that Chef delved into over there—he learned well: it’s about the “smoke” as evidenced by his smoked citrus butter, salt, jalapenos, apple bacon and other up-coming “smoke influenced” menu items. Well—coming full circle, I’m certain all this experience has added to Chef’s ever-increasing repertoire. “It’s been inspirational!” Chef comments, “Collaborating with Chef Andrew on this new menu has been a dream come true. Here, I’m given the opportunity to create and display what I enjoy: melding light with the bold, working with bright and desert nuances, keeping things simple but with complex favors and varied textures—this excitement I have is real!”

April 5 to April 11, 2018

“I look forward to establishing signature dishes, for sure. At the same time, the Coachella Valley produces diverse and wide-ranging ingredients to keep things fresh and invigorating. Our menu is definitely an ‘American-themed cuisine with twists’.” No doubt the restaurant team’s plate will definitely be full in their resolve to bring breakfast, lunch, dinner and happy hour for both locals and tourists alike. Here’s a look at some of the dishes we tasted: For Starters, we recommend the tasty and lively Lobster Mac ‘N Cheese. Not a heavy dish at all, but every bite continues to entice another with the 3 Cheese Sauce and Buttered Topping. And a glass of chilled Ruffino Prosecco with the plate was wonderful. For a luncheon salad, I had none better than Chef’s Tuna Nicoise. The freshest filets of rare-pan seared tuna amidst mixed greens with Kalamata Olives, Onions, Anchovy and more,

make this an immediate signature salad in the desert. We enjoyed this plate with a glass of chilled SAVED Rosé: The perfect pairing! We’re coming back to try the Lobster Cobb salad, Crispy Iceburg, Apple Smoked Bacon, Roasted Corn, Tiny Tomatoes, Chèvre, Egg, and Avocado Dressing, and next perhaps the California— Grilled Shrimp, Spinach, Orange, Grapefruit, Pomegranate, Cotija, Almonds and Herb Vinaigrette. After the Nicoise salad, we only had room to share the medium-rare AC3 Burger—Kobe Beef, Meltged Onions, Smoked Cheddar, Local Greens, Tomato, on a Toasted Brioche Bun. And would you expect any other accolade other than: whoa! that is one delicious hamburger! Should we say—de rigueur in the desert! (Enjoy with the Diseño Malbec.) For dinner, Chef recommends especially the Berkshire Pork Schnitzel, the Striped Bass (served with that smoked citrus butter!), and the Braised Beef ShortRibs served with White Cheddar Grits, Tobacco Onions, and Scallion Salad. The nice thing for your readers is that you can check it all out: menus, beer, wine & cocktails lists and much more info at www. ac3palmdesert.com. Congrats Chef! Great checking in with you and best regards to your lovely family. Cheers!

xceptionally fresh, organic and delicious fare await you at Wildest Greens in Palm Desert. Upon entering Wildest Greens in Palm Desert, you can almost feel the crisp freshness of what your experience will be. With stylish furniture and décor, it is clear that every move made was intentional for a memorable restaurant encounter. Opened earlier this year by local actress, philanthropist, business leader and health/fitness advocate, Denise DuBarry Hay, Wildest Greens has already become the place to be for organic dining, the ultimate in farm- to table fare. I stopped by Wildest Greens on a beautiful Sunday morning, ready to feel the benefits from delighting in some organic goodness. There are different places to enjoy your time at the eatery. There’s a lounge with stylish couches, tables and chairs sitting underneath a well-appointed chandelier, a bar, where guests can enjoy wine and beer as well as food items, and a Smoothie Bar, where juices and smoothies are the stars, as well as a traditional dining room. For this occasion, my boyfriend and I decided to take a couple of seats at the Smoothie Bar, as I was eager to try some of their Cold-Pressed juices that they highlight. And if you think ColdPressing juice doesn’t make a difference, think again. Our experience at Wildest Greens was led by Matt Williams, who is kind of the Jack of all trades at the restaurant. He was very helpful in guiding us through the juice descriptions, as well as informing us about different items on their extremely infinite menu.

EAT WILDLY FRESH & ORGANIC AT WILDEST GREENS

We went for a flight of juices, which are a variety of six juices served in shooter glasses on a glass tray. The Cold-Pressed juices availability depend on the day. On the day that we were there, the flight came with Hot Shot (turmeric, ginger, green apple, lemon, black pepper, cayenne), Sunrise (watermelon, green apple, carrot, pineapple, lime), Morningrita, (apple, H2O, lime, moringa, baobab, sea salt), Blood Cleanse (beet, carrot, apple, lemon, burdock, cilantro, ginger, parsley, garlic, cayenne, turmeric), The Hangover (tomato, celery, carrot, spinach, red bell, aloe, basil, lime, cayenne, pepper, E3live) and Kombucha. It is to be noted that the shots, like the Hot Shot and Flu Shot (no needle required), are meant to be “shot” not sipped, as I quickly found out. The shots deliver a jolt of flavor that if left to linger in sipping mode, may not have the same desired impact. Now let’s just touch on the Cold-Pressed thing for a second. The process involves the use of a hydraulic press, which is used to extract the juice without heat or additives. This process retains the nutrients of the juice, optimizing the benefits of consumption. Like I said before, if you think it doesn’t make a difference, you need to

taste it first. It seriously was the best juice that I have ever tasted. The juices were amazingly lite and airy…almost seemed to float out of the glass. The taste was clean and crisp. Drinking it made me feel like I was doing something very good for my body. One heck of a juice adventure. Another part of the juice flight was their Kombucha Tea on tap. This effervescent beverage is made in-house, and fermented for 5 weeks. It is joyfully refreshing, and I’m admittedly a little hooked on it. The juices and Kombucha are also available to be purchased by the bottle (selections may vary). Besides Wildest Greens insanely tasty juices and Kombucha, is their food. The extensive menu has a myriad of selections, and has something for everyone and then some. If you can’t find something on the menu that you like, you’re simply not reading the menu. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant has creative items such as, Paleo Pancakes (made with eggs, almond & coconut flour), Wildest Greens Brekkie Burrito (chicken sausage, eggs,

potatoes, nut cheese, avocado, pico de gallo, black beans, choice of whole wheat or gluten free tortilla), The Deep Green Salad (baby greens topped with seaweed, shaved white onion, diced marinated cucumber, seasonal Australian finger lime caviar and Asian dressing), Bison Burger (caramelized onion, spicy harissa), house made Gravlox and so much, much more. Apart from their dine in menu, there is also a Grab and Go area, with items ready for those on the move. With everything organic and fresh, you never have to worry if what you’re putting in your body is good for you. It’s kind of like guilt free dining. Executive Chef, Jeffery Cooper is perfect to head the kitchen at Wildest Greens. After surviving cancer, the seasoned chef came to appreciate organic foods, embracing them and implementing them into his life, “Food is medicine,” says Cooper, and that would make Wildest Greens the most delicious pharmacy around. Wildest Greens is a restaurant that everyone should experience for phenomenally fresh, organic fare. I look forward to enjoying their juices again very soon, and working my way through their amazing menu, and relishing in every nutritious bite. To your health! Wildest Greens is located at 72-990 El PaseoSuite 3, Palm Desert Ca- 760-636-0441 www.wildestgreens.com

SCREENERS

NOW PLAYING: READY PLAYER ONE Before I even saw this film based on Ernest Cline’s eponymous bestseller (the pop-culture obsessed screenplay is by Cline and Zak Penn), I was already a bit put-off by the many postings of RPO movie posters that referenced previous hit movies like THE MATRIX, RISKY BUSINESS, THE IRON GIANT, THE SEVENTH SEAL, THE GOONIES, BACK TO THE FUTURE, RAMBO and so on. Steven Spielberg’s latest big budget ($180m before advertising) mash-up of action, nostalgia, sweetness and eyepopping effects is like eating a Twinkie. There’s no real nutrition in the sponge cake with it’s synthetic filling. In fact, what’s the appeal beyond the sugar rush and comforting familiarity of rekindling childhood memories? The sci-fi adventure is set in the year 2045 when our over-populated, corporatized world is on the brink of chaos and environmental collapse. Sound familiar? I almost expected to see Spinners and Blade Runners! It’s a time when people have found escape from their harsh reality -- or is it salvation? -- in the OASIS, a vast, seemingly infinite virtual reality universe created by the brilliant eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance) in which “players” can live as avatars of their own creation, go

EMPTY CALORIES

anywhere and do anything. When Halliday expires, he leaves his incredible fortune and control of OASIS to the first person to find a digital Easter egg hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world – the “real one.” When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality bending treasure hunt through a fantastical, mysterious and very dangerous universe. The poster’s tagline: “An adventure too big for the real world” is a bit misleading because if the movie has a point, it’s that reality has more to offer than any synthetic construct no matter how alluring or

convincing the artifice may be. There’s so much more to be said regarding our mind-boggling technological advances, especially re A.I. and the ability to create convincing, photo-realistic alt worlds that everyone has access to in the palm of their hands. The issue of surrendering control of our lives to computer assisted, seemingly all-knowing, almost God-like cyber entities is not explored in Spielberg’s film. Beyond the admittedly stunning visuals, there’s a cold void where it’s heart should be. However, I did like the thematically and morally solid but limited battle between corporate greed and the real world’s natural rewards. Pass the Twinkies please. A missed opportunity.

Director Ridley Scott masterly recreates a time and place in this compelling and satisfying historical thriller. The tight screenplay by David Scarpa was adapted from John Pearson’s book. There are wonderful exchanges about the meaning of having great wealth and the true and perhaps meaning of acquiring value of beautiful things. Interesting extras include 8 deleted scenes, “Ridley Scott: Crafting a Historical Thriller” and “Recast, Reshot, Reclaimed” a featurette that examines the recasting of the character J. Paul Getty just weeks before the film’s theatrical release! Recommended. Plummer is terrific as Getty. Sony. Blu-ray. MOLLY’S GAME

NEW FOR THE HOME THEATER: ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD

Follow the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer) and the desperate attempt of his devoted mother Gail (Michelle Williams to convince his billionaire grandfather (Christopher Plummer) to pay the ransom. When Getty Sr. refuses, Gail attempts to sway him as her son’s captors become increasingly violent and brutal. With her son’s life in the balance, Gail and Getty’s advisor (Mark Wahlberg) become unlikely allies in the race against time that ultimately reveals the real value of – and, differences between -- love and money.

BY ROBIN E. SIMMONS

From writer/director Aaron Sorkin, the mind behind The Social Network, The West Wing and Moneyball comes the incredible true story of 26-year-old Molly Bloom, who through sheer nerve, wits and acumen builds an empire and takes over the ultimate boys club: exclusive high-stakes poker. Two-time Academy Award© nominee Jessica Chastain delivers a powerful performance as the determined and tenacious Molly, a former Olympic class skier, who ran the exclusive games for a decade becoming a target of the FBI. Her players included Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans and, unbeknownst to her, the Russian mob. Her only ally was her criminal defense attorney Charlie Jaffey (Idris Elba) who discovers there’s much more to Molly than the tabloids led us to believe. Recommended. Sony. BOOK REVIEW

T

he Coachella Valley is home to an incredible array of talented and interesting people! One way to meet some of these amazing folks is to attend the Desert Writers Expo, which is presented by the Palm Springs Writers Guild and held at the Rancho Mirage Library & Observatory’s Community Room. The Expo provides an opportunity for authors to share their work, talk to readers, sell and sign books. This year marked the 7th Annual event and featured fiction, nonfiction, poetry, fantasy, cooking, travel, health, memoir and children’s books. NEW VOICES Finishing Strong: Strength Training for Old(er) Guys by Ron Marinella (Allamo, 262 pages), is an informative, well researched and organized book about getting into shape and maintaining health as an older person. Though it’s directed towards men, women may find it useful. The author includes references and helpful appendices. New to the Expo, Brian Peyton Joyner debuted his novel The Wisdom of Stones (Goldenrule, 353 pages) about a boy who promised God and his grandmother that he’d be a Southern Baptist preacher, problem is he can’t pray away the gay. FICTION Author David M. Hamlin returned to the Expo with Winter Gets Hot (Open Books, 290 pages) a sequel to his thriller Winter in Chicago. Wall Street Journal Bestselling author J.D. DESERT WRITERS EXPO 2018

Sonja & Carl by Suzanne Hillier (Brindle & Glass, 313 pages), is a love story, and The Troublemakers by Jenny Terrell (CreateSpace, 310 pages) about three nuns on the run to outfox their bishop. Both are fun fiction. Author C. Claire Lucka and her gal pals made the Expo a party while she shared her novel The Women of Saint Germain: Tour of Duty (CreateSpace, 300 pages) part one of a historical romance series. Playwright and author Matt Cutugno’s The Godless Men (Stay Thirsty, 219 pages) tells the fictional story of two men who head West after the Civil War. Kameleona by Judith Fabris (Sunacumen Press, 210 pages) is a novel that takes place on the island of Molokai and tells a story of transformation and redemption. Written and illustrated by Rachel Druten, Paradise Found: The Adventures of Hazel Flick and Her Pesky Pup Fanny tells the story of a woman who leaves her “deadbeat family” and moves to Palm Springs. Druten donates ten percent of every book to “Tools for Tomorrow,” a valley charity that helps schoolage children. Actor and author Michael Dante was back again this year with a new book Whitehawk’s Land (BearManor, 108 pages), a fictional sequel based on the film Whitehawk in which Dante played the title role. Young adult author Elizabeth Jane Morgan was back at the Expo with her new book Silver Rose (452 pages) about a 16-year-old girl discovering a strange world and its secrets. The prolific and charming Ariella Moon displayed her colorful array of teen and young adult medieval fantasy adventure novels; Fire Spell, third in the “Teen Wytche Saga” (Star Tribe, 305 pages) is set in the CV and Joshua Tree. NONFICTION Author and entrepreneur Penny Farmer was busy at the Expo talking about two of her nonfiction books Playboy Laughs and Playboy Swings. While each has playboy in the title, there are no centerfolds -- although there are dozens of terrific photos. Playboy Swings is a fascinating look at Hugh Hefner’s passion for music and his influence pertaining to jazz. Returning author Cat Cohen, Chicken Soups From Around the World, had his new book Cat Tracks A Budget Train Travel Adventure: Insights and Images From California to New England. After 31 years of bringing in over 6,000 vessels from the Pacific Ocean, Crossing the Bar: The Adventures of a San Francisco Bay Bar Pilot by Captain Paul Lobo (Seahorse, 272 pages) is a fascinating professional memoir. Playwright and theater director Andy

Harmon’s book Change Journey: Voices of the Creative Quest (Actor’s Mind, 158 pages) writes about the challenges to live a truly creative life. Author Renee Baribeau’s Winds of Spirit: Ancient Wisdom Tools for Navigating Relationships, Health and the Devine (Hay House, 249 pages) shares the beauty, spirit and power that is carried in the wind. Self-help books included: Changeless Change by Carol Davis (84 pages) shares vignettes that can change lives from ordinary to extraordinary. Author Elizabeth Schadrack returned with a new book for parents, Ask Thank and Praise: The Art of Communication (CreateSpace, 84 pages).

SAFETY TIPS

BY FIRE CHIEF SAM DIGIOVANNA

PLAY BALL! STADIUM SAFETY TIPS…

I

love this time of year! Baseball season is now officially here. Whether you’re going to a professional baseball game or to your local neighborhood field, keep your eye on the ball and make safety a priority so that your stadium experience is more like a home run than a strikeout,” says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. First Pitch – Sometimes your team may not be so hot, but the weather may be. Keep hydrated with water and other fluids especially if you’re sweating and/or your seats are in the sun. Strike One – Whether it’s sunny or cloudy, there’s still the potential for sunburn. Don’t cry foul when you realize you’re getting burned. Speaking of fouls, foul balls and broken bats have the potential to enter the seating areas and concourses. Be aware of what’s going on so that you can avoid being hit by bats or balls that fly your way. Ball One – When a baseball is hit or thrown into the stands, excitement ensues. Others will try to be the ‘all-star’ and want that ball. If it’s theirs be a good fielder and back off. If you’re sitting or standing near a railing don’t reach over the railing to attempt to catch the ball. It doesn’t take more than a second for an accident to happen while reaching for it. Strike Two – Look at the stadium’s seating chart to see where your seats are located so you can get an idea of what kind of clothing to wear. Dress in layers so that you can be

comfortable no matter where you’re sitting. Bring a raincoat along if there’s a chance it could rain. Foul Ball? – Remember, “You don’t always have to catch the ball.” What I mean here is, when someone throws you a negative comment, look or attitude, drop it. It’s out of play. Forget about it. Maintain a good attitude, be patient and maintain sportsmanship conduct at all times. We’ll all be Champs if you do so. Practice this on and off the field! Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna

or six years, 312 columns and nearly 200,000 words, the objective of this column has been to inform and educate in an entertaining way that you cannot find from mainstream news reports. In our very first article, you learned how the U.S. Government gutted social security for future generations by changing cost of living adjustments in social security increases so that it is less than actual costs of living. After a bit of outrage, current retirees were excluded from the calculation by creating a cost of living adjustment specifically for them (while still underestimating their living cost increases). The government also has tinkered with the unemployment rate so much that it effectively excludes many of the unemployed or underemployed. It is easy to have the

lowest unemployment rate in history when you exclude many of the unemployed. Then there was the National Defense Authorization Act that was passed in 2012 that allowed the U.S. government to detain anyone in the world indefinitely, including Americans, without a trial so long as they suspect you of being a threat to the United States. Sounds very Orwellian, no? On the heels of this, the FAA Reauthorization Act allowed for government and businesses to engage in greater surveillance within our borders through the collection of your tweets, texts, phone calls, emails and other electronic data…yet Congress holds hearings on why Facebook did exactly this for profit. And what about Democrats and Republicans protecting Monsantos’ GMO wheat? Monsanto tested a strain of wheat in open fields which polluted the general wheat crops across the United States resulting in the ban of U.S. wheat across much of the world. Vladimir Putin, Russia’s strong man dictator, stated that the continued protection of Monsanto by the United States is devastating bee populations globally. At the same time, the European Union stated that Monsanto’s pesticides are not only devastating bee populations but bird populations as well. Obama and

Congress showed their concern by passing Farmer Assurance Provision Section 735 that protected Monsanto against lawsuits caused by any harm created by their protects on humans, wildlife or the environment. We have even looked into pet food as some manufacturers include ingredients like styrofoam, roadkill and cows with Mad Cow disease. Think about it - your pet may be eating meat product invested with maggots and bacteria prior to the meat rendering process. Tasty! We have regularly pointed out the flagrant abuses on all of us by the banking industry. While Wells Fargo would be in jail if they were a person (which the Supreme Court states that they are…yet no one goes to jail), they are joined by many of the largest firms in finance. Without question, the worst actors amongst an ugly bunch are Wells Fargo, Bank of America and many brokerage and insurance firms. Looking at the global economy, we have warned that the next financial crisis will most likely be caused by massive government deficits, derivatives or hedge funds. A derivative is a contract where one firm trades some risk with another firm while a hedge fund is an unregulated investment company. The world has $50 trillion in economic activity every year yet derivatives

April 5 to April 11, 2018

are 10x that. Meanwhile, unregulated hedge funds are 4x larger than all U.S. banks combined. If banks almost destroyed the global economy ten years ago, think of the potential impact of hedge funds, derivatives or excessive debt. Not all articles are heavy. I particularly enjoyed Unbeweavable (8/18/16), Donald Trump and Grumpy Old Man Syndrome (7/20/15) and Spaghetti Trees and LeftHanded Whoppers (3/14/14). DALE GRIBOW ON THE LAW

TO WIN AN ACCIDENT CASE YOU WANT A TRIAL BY YOUR PEERS, BUT DID OJ HAVE THAT?

B

efore you can get to trial you must gather evidence to show the defendant was Negligent. You can’t read the Desert Sun without reading about Negligence in some form and with our Coachella Concerts there will be additional drivers and thus more accidents. But what is Negligence? In the first year of law school all law students have a class called TORTS. A Tort is a simply a civil wrong and the most common is Negligence. We are taught that Negligence is the failure to act as a reasonably prudent person would in similar circumstances. This is the Reasonable Man Test. However the determination regarding who is reasonable and prudent is often left in the hands of jurors who, themselves, are not reasonable and prudent. This last statement may be seen as my being cute. However, look at it from the perspective of the court room. Plaintiff attorneys, who represent the injured party, work to convince jurors that the defendant was Negligent because s/he failed to act in a reasonable manner resulting in injury or damage to their client. Defense attorneys try to counter the argument and cloud the waters to confuse the jurors. We plaintiff attorneys have emotion on our side and defense attorneys have only factual evidence to present. In that regard we look at the elements of Negligence and

the 4 things required: To prove Negligence 4 things are needed: 1) A duty to act or not act; 2) Failure to act or not act as required by the duty; 3) Injury or damage occurs and 4) Proximate cause. Proximate Cause is often referred to as an unbroken chain of events, with no intervening incidents, between the failure to act and the injury or damage. If there are any intervening causes then Negligence is questionable. From an emotional standpoint, the plaintiff wants the jury to sympathize or feel sorry for the person that was injured and to put themselves in the same place. Thus when a plaintiff lawyer chooses a jury, referred to as voir dire, s/he looks for a juror that can relate to the plaintiff. Sometimes it is someone who is the same age, sex, type of work, same background etc. In other words a juror who can think “but for the grace of god go I”. A juror who feels this way is more likely to award a positive and higher verdict for the plaintiff. The defense wants the opposite and kicks off “challenges/ excuses” that juror. We often speak of a jury of our peers. A plaintiff lawyer thinks of this as someone that is like the plaintiff. With the OJ Simpson murder case for instance, the crime occurred in Brentwood (West LA) and the case should have been sent to the Santa Monica Court. However there had just been tremendous quake damages and many of the Santa

Monica courtrooms were closed from damage. Thus the case was sent to downtown LA where there were long term courtrooms available. Everyone in the judicial system knew that if the case was sent to LA it would be more likely to be a jury of OJ’s peers...and result in a not guilty verdict. The complexion of the downtown jury was a lot more African American and other minority groups. These would favor OJ. In the past many LA jurors have had run in’s with the police and were more susceptible to the argument the police were lying and trying to frame OJ. Thus they were more likely to believe the argument if the “glove doesn’t fit you must acquit.”

The Santa Monica Jury pool would have more Caucasian and middle or upper middle class jurors who did not have the same experiences as African Americans and did not believe the police ever acted improperly. Trying to get a balance of these jurors is the trick and OJ got lucky. Questions, contact attorney Dale Gribow: 760 837-7500 or dale@dalegribowlaw.com. REAL ESTATE THINKING ABOUT RENTING YOUR HOME OUT FOR THE MUSIC FESTIVALS?

S

pring has sprung here in the Coachella Valley and that means it is that time of year again when our three big music festivals return. You most likely have heard the unbelievable stories about homeowners who are actually moving out of their own homes and renting them to complete strangers for ridiculously large amounts of money over the Coachella and Stage Coach Weekends. Surprisingly most of them are true! An average home or condo can rent for up to $5,000.00 each weekend while luxury homes can go for anywhere from $15,000.00 to $30,000.00 for EACH WEEKEND! Some homeowners manage to pay their home mortgage payments for the entire year just by renting their homes out for these three weekends. But before you convert your house from a home to a hotel to get your hands on some of these big bucks there are several things that you will want to consider to protect yourself and your ASSets! I’ll get to my best advice to consider right after we check the month of March home sales data for the Coachella Valley. We started off the first two months of 2018 continuing our trend of more pendings and solds each month, year over year, and on track to exceed last year’s totals which were the highest in the last 13 years! With our inventory shrinking and interest rates rising would we be able to continue this trend? Let’s take a look at the March data and see how we did. According to the Desert Area MLS as of 4/1/18 there were 1,255 pending transactions of residential properties here in the Coachella Valley in the month of March. That follows our seasonal pattern being up from the 1,186 pendings in the previous month (February) and very close to the same number when compared

REAL ESTATE

to the same time last year when we had only 1,268 pending sales. The fact that it is fewer pending sales than last March breaks the trend of monthly pending sales increasing year over year for the past 4 years. In February there were 714 solds and we were up considerably in March with 1,004 solds. That is still slightly fewer than last year’s home sales in March (2017) when we sold 1,047 homes. This too breaks the trend of monthly solds increasing year over year for the past 4 years. Though the decrease in both year over year pendings and solds is very slight, with interest rates rising and inventory falling it is definitely something we need to pay close attention to in the coming months. Our Year to date solds for 2018 stands at 2,527 compared to last year’s total of 2,542. Last year was the best year in terms of total sales and dollar volume since 2005 and was a great year for the Coachella Valley Real Estate market. Even though we are only a few homes behind last year’s numbers, we ended the first quarter of 2018 in very good shape! Our inventory of homes for sale went down again this month with 3,726 homes available on April 1, 2018 compared to 3,846 homes available on March 1, 2018. Last year at this time we had 4,674 homes available for sale. Inventory has been off by over 20% but so far that has not significantly affected our sales numbers. Hopefully it will not become a factor this year. So far, so good for now! We’ll just have to keep a close watch the inventory of homes here in the Coachella Valley and see if it continues to shrink along with our sales numbers throughout the coming months. Homes rentals here in the Coachella Valley are considered either long term, seasonal or short term (“vacation rentals”) depending upon the

PROPERTY OF THE WEEK

length of the rental period. A long term rental is usually rented without furnishings for six months to a year. A seasonal rental is rented “turn-key furnished” (which means just bring your clothes and toothbrush) for a minimum of 30 days and up to six months. Short term or vacation rentals are also rented turn-key furnished and can be for as brief as a single night but not longer than 30 days… like a hotel. In order to take advantage of all three music festivals your home will have to be rented out as a short term/vacation rental. The first thing that you must do is to check with the City or County to see if they allow short term rentals (STR) in their jurisdiction and if they do is a license/registration/permit required. Learn about their special rules and regulations as well as the fines associated with the breaking of those rules as they can be just as exorbitant as the rental amounts! If your home is located in a gated community with a Home Owner’s Association (HOA) you must check with the HOA to see if they allow STR and if they do is a license/registration/permit required. If you are still good to go, then you will want to check with your insurance agent about getting Vacation Rental Insurance. This is different from your regular home owners insurance and you will want to make sure you have full coverage. Next you will need to get a good contract to use with your renters. Having a written agreement will protect both parties should anything not go exactly as planned during the rental period. You must also have a means to accept payment and a security deposit for the rental. Setting up online payment processing is super easy and will allow you to take credit cards for both the rent and deposit. Having a credit card from the responsible party can also help keep damages to a minimum! Finally, it is recommended that

These are just a few of the important things I recommend you consider to protect yourself and your property if you decide to rent your home out as a vacation rental. Of course my best advice on this is to speak with your trusted real estate professional and get their recommendation and contact information for a Vacation Rental Property Manager. These professionals specialize in short term rentals and will have the necessary information, contracts, ability to accept payments, locate renters and advise you every step of the way for a fee equal to 20-30% of the rental amount. y name is Alexandra Miklosova, and I have been in real estate here in the Coachella Valley for over 10 years. Currently, I am a Realtor and Creative Marketing Strategist for Lux Box Agency and I absolutely love what I do! I love our valley, I love real estate and I love social media! Out of the love and my passion I have created a collaborative online social media platform to connect homebuyers, home owners, investors and real estate professionals. Welcome to Palm Springs Open House! Every other week, I am here to provide you with valuable real estate information, market update, current listings and open houses throughout our beautiful Coachella Valley in a very fun and interactive way. Every week I search the Palm Springs area real estate market for the best possible deals for my clients. I will share them with you along with 3 reasons why you should be curious about that property too! Let’s dive in. Here is my “Pick of The Week”! This week I have selected 72777 El Paseo #712 Sandpiper in Palm Desert

BY BRUCE CATHCART

Reason #2 has to be the price! It is challenging to find a historically significant, midcentury modern condo with amazing upgrades, that is steps away from the world renowned El Paseo shopping center priced under $500k. This condo also has the highly coveted glass atrium that ads so much character and style to this Desert get-away home. Furthermore, you can also enjoy a detached garage, which comes so handy especially during the summer months. I hate to sound cliché, but this home truly has it all, and it can be all yours only for $479,000. What an incredible opportunity! My final reason #3 has to be the fact that you could be the first person to see this gorgeous home! This phenomenal architectural masterpiece is hitting the market on Thursday (April 5th,) but you’re already reading about it right here in this article. When

good inventory is rare and goes very fast, like it does in our current real estate market, being the “first to know” undoubtedly has it’s perks! You are invited to enjoy the resort lifestyle with 3 private outdoor living spaces as well as the outstanding amenities this community has to offer (full outdoor kitchen and grill area, pool, putting green, shuffleboard, lounge chairs, and lush landscaping throughout) all you have to say is YES! Grab a cup of coffee and read my biweekly column here in CV Weekly or join the conversation on-line in our Facebook group + Instagram at @PalmSpringsOpenHouse Feel free to give me a call with any real estate related question or request a FREE marketing strategy consultation and allow me to help you sell your home! TKB BAKERY & DELI CUSTOMER APPRECIATION BLOCK PARTY AND #1 YELP SPOT CELEBRATION!

S

aturday, April 7, 2018 marks the first time TKB Bakery & Deli will be celebrating their longtime success on a large scale with a parking lot ‘pat on the back’ for its customers, staff and family. After years of providing the desert with the best in sandwich art Melina, Brandon, Nathan and parents Paul and Athena Sippel, will be throwing their customers a block party like no other. Scheduled to perform live are ALCHEMY, AARON MAZARATI, and more! TKB will be providing free water, sodas and merchandise. Big Rigg BBQ will be cooking on the lot. There will be The First Annual ‘The Trump’ Sandwich Eating Contest, a balloon artist for the kids and TKB’s full menu will be available through 7 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will go to F.I.N.D. Food Bank. I’ve been a customer of TKB since day one. I spoke with Melina about this first time event and why it’s important. Melina shared, “I’ve wanted to do something like this for a while. Making #1 makes a party mandatory. We’ve never celebrated with our employees and the family. We just get to work because there are lines out the door and we never sat down to plan a big party because it is a lot of work. Now I want to give back to everybody who has been supporting my family the last 20 years. Whether you came into TKB once a week or once a month, I want you here and I want you to celebrate with us. This is for everybody in the valley that supports TKB. This award belongs to the Coachella Valley. We have the #1 eatery in the nation! We have the #1 music festival in the world! Indio is only going to get better. We’re creating stars in this city. We’re a big fish in a small pond but we’re being nationally recognized on huge levels. I want to mingle and talk to all my customers. This is a meet and greet with the Sippels!” Since TKB gained the number one business on the 2018 Yelp Top 100 Places To Eat List they have been covered by every sensible local, national publication and news agency. One thing these media agencies have missed, according to Melina Sippel, is the why. “The biggest thing that’s missing is the reasons we’re a 5-Star eatery. What are the things that make us 5-Star? I think having so many regular customers for so many years and us and knowing each one by name while treating them great when they come in and making them whatever they want when they want it. Everyone that walks through the door is treated with so much respect, joy, love and happiness. This is a happy crew. The employees are happy, the family is happy and we take care of you.” There’s no doubt that achieving number one is significant but the difficulty lies in maintaining that spot. Melina assured me that TKB has big plans and a vision. “TKB isn’t going anywhere. We’re going to be 5-Star from here on out. The #1 spot is a blessing but the biggest thing is us maintaining the same service that we’ve been providing that got us to this point. When you’re at the top everybody is trying to bring you down. We need to rise above and be better and there still some things we continue

to work on.” So far TKB has risen above the standard for customer service. That customer service is not always provided and Melina and TKB staff is fully aware. “There are places you aren’t looked at in the eye and are not treated like a person. You’re spending good money for mediocre food on top of it. Not only are people treated great at TKB, they’re given food that’s 6 stars in my opinion. Their bellies are full and they get their free cookie in the end. If I was driving on the freeway and had nowhere to eat and I came into TKB I would say this place is amazing. This is gonna be my stop. It happens every day. Customers see the billboards or they go on Yelp and they see 5-Star rating and they come in and they say OMG!” I have tried many a TKB sammie and OMG is not the only exclamation of excitement I’ve expressed. TKB has defied all logic in its success. Melina agreed, “This is the worst location you could possibly have a sandwich shop. We don’t even have proper signage. We’re in the back of an industrial park in the middle of Indio.” The local grapevine and Yelp’s ratings have incited a sandwich riot it Indio. “It began with word of mouth then Yelp happened. Yelp has been a big part in all of this. We made the top 5 for four years in a row. We broke through the ceiling this year. It’s been amazing for us. A lot of people bash Yelp. Look at our family business. Look what it did for our small family in Indio, California. It took us to the next level. Without Yelp we would have been passed by. Now our possibilities are endless because of having this national recognition. Every review that people write bad and good is pretty on point. These aren’t people we asked to write a review. They just had a great experience and wanted to put it on their Yelp account.” With all the success, it’s amazing that TKB is not sitting on its laurels. I asked Melina what she would like to share with potential first-time customers. Melina declared, “We have the best sandwich you’ll ever eat. You will be taken care of. A free cookie goes to all first-timers. You’ll feel like family in the end.” As a long-time customer I can testify that you will feel like family and you will return. Pavlov was right. TKB Bakery & Deli Customer Appreciation Block Party & #1 Yelp Spot Celebration Saturday, April 7, 2018. 3-7 p.m. 44911 Golf Center Parkway Drive Indio, CA 92201 - (760) 775-8330 tkbbakery.com findfoodbank.org

SPORTS SCENE

W

ith the NBA regular season drawing to a close, the race for the final eight playoff spots in both the Eastern and Western conferences is as close as it’s been in quite some time. NBA teams only have a few days left to secure their playoff positioning. The Raptors, Celtics, Cavs, Rockets and Warriors have already earned playoff berths, but which teams will join them? When it comes to championship futures, Tilted Sports Media is expecting a wide-open postseason. Current future books have the playoff odds at Golden State Warrior are the -110 favorites, with the Houston Rockets (+130), Cleveland Cavaliers (+600), Toronto Raptors (+750), Boston Celtics (+1500), Oklahoma City Thunder (+2500), Portland Trail Blazers (+2500), San Antonio Spurs (+4000), Philadelphia 76ers (+4000), Indiana Pacers (+5000), Washington Wizards (+5000), Utah Jazz (+5800), Minnesota Timberwolves (+6500), New Orleans Pelicans (+6500), Milwaukee Bucks (+6500), Miami Heat (+8000), The Warriors have been the front-runners to win the championship after hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy last June, but their current odds are the worst they’ve been all year. That’s because the Warriors (54-20 as of March 28) have been hit hard by the injury bug and are going to fall well short of reaching their projected season win total. Golden State is locked into the No. 2 spot in the West thanks to the ridiculously hot play of the Rockets (61-

14) and MVP finalist Harden. While the battle to represent the West in the NBA Finals looks like it’s going to come down to the Warriors and Rockets, the East is up for grabs right now. It’s been a rocky season in Cleveland, to say the least, but LeBron James and company are rounding into form at the right time despite sitting in third place as of this writing. The Raptors, who’ve all but locked up the No. 1 seed, are clearly being respected by sportsbooks as a result of their +750 odds to win the title. That’s well ahead of the Celtics, who are dealing with health issues of their own right now, headlined by the seasonending knee injury to star point guard Kyrie Irving. Eastern Conference playoff picture The 76ers, Pacers, Bucks and Wizards have essentially secured their tickets to the postseason. Based on simulations, these

ometimes our true Life’s purpose strikes when we least expect it. That is exactly how it happened for Aimee Mosco, Co-Founder of IHS Unity, a community based movement designed to unite and heal us globally through teachings from her two books she has written and developed. A transplant from New Hampshire, Aimee has lived and worked in California since the late 80’s. She, like so many others, knew deep inside that it was her right, her duty, to utilize her License to Live Large…and to help others do so as well. LTLL: What caused you to create IHS Unity? Aimee: I created IHS Unity from the intent to contribute to the greater good of humanity. I have always been able to see what I call the “divinity” in people. We all have goodness in us but don’t always know where to channel that energy. IHS Unity represents a virtual gathering place where people actively share their divinity energy and bring this world to a higher ground. LTLL: What were you doing prior to writing books, training practitioners on your healing systems and leading community events? Aimee: I was a fashion designer! I worked as a designer for a high-end leather manufacturer in Los Angeles and then

teams have 98-99 percent chances to reach the playoffs. It would require gigantic meltdowns for these teams to miss the playoffs this year. The only interesting discussion involves the last position in the Eastern Conference. The Heat are expected to land at No. 8 in the East, as Miami is currently seven games ahead of the Pistons. Miami’s probability to reach the playoffs is 84 percent, while the Pistons have a 16 percent chance to pass the Heat and get into the postseason party. It is also worth taking a look at the division battles, which are completely open. Currently, the Raptors (54 percent win probability in Atlantic) and Wizards (86 percent win probability in Southeast) are leading their respective divisions. Expect the Cavs to take over by the end of the regular season in the Central, as their division win probability is 61 percent.

went on to start an over-seas handbag manufacturing company. It was a very exciting career with travel around the world, but I often felt as if a critical piece was missing from my puzzle. I felt as if I wasn’t fulfilling some agreement that my soul had made without my awareness. I believe that was my soul prompting me to use my creative talents in ways that would make more of a difference in the world.

Western Conference playoff picture In addition to the Rockets and Warriors, it looks like the Timberwolves and Trail Blazers have the best odds to make the playoffs in the Western Conference. Portland had won 13 games in a row before a loss to the Rockets, and that streak improved the team’s chances quite a bit. The Thunder also look secure with almost 94 percent probability to get into the playoffs despite the fact that Oklahoma City is only up 2.5 games in the standings on the final West playoff team. The Spurs find themselves in unfamiliar territory near the bottom of the playoff picture, but the simulations like their chances and predict San Antonio will make the final playoff field (over 92 percent probability). Things don’t look so good for the Clippers, who have only a 34 percent probability to make the playoffs behind the Jazz (76 percent) and Pelicans (86 percent). The Rockets and Warriors have already clinched their respective divisions without breaking a sweat. The Northwest Division, though, will be a tight race. The Thunder have an outside shot, but their chances are below 10 percent. It will most likely come down to the Timberwolves (63 percent) and the Trail Blazers (27 percent) for the division crown, according to the simulations.

LTLL: My column is intended to encourage others to Live Large…in other words, live a life of their choosing…how do you promote peace and happiness to your students and clients? Aimee: I live by the words I teach. Our first book is about gratitude, forgiveness and love (“Gratitude + Forgiveness x(Love) = Happiness”). These 3 things, especially when used in combination are a recipe for absolute harmony and peace in this world. LTLL: What have you ultimately learned when others do not want to adopt your Unity paradigm? Aimee: The hardest lesson I have learned is that I can’t take responsibility for others. We are all only in charge of ourselves, and while we can help and guide others, it is not our job to take the pain of others away or carry them to the finish line.

LTLL: Finally, what is one tip that you desire to impart…to encourage others to Live Large? Aimee: Showing kindness and sending love to humankind is the biggest gift that every one of us can do. In fact, I offer love to all living creatures, not just people. Love is a resource that is without limits and heals a multitude of problems. Hey Coachella Valley…do you have a story to share? FREE WILL ASTROLOGY

Week of April 5

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Eighty-three-year-old author Harlan Ellison has had a long and successful career. In the course of publishing hundreds of literary works in seven different genres, he has won numerous awards. But when he was in his thirties, there was an interruption in the upward arc of his career. The film production company Walt Disney Studios hired him as a writer. During his first day on the job, Roy Disney overheard Ellison joking with a co-worker about using Disney characters in an animated pornographic movie. Ellison was fired on the spot. I am by no means predicting a comparable event in your life, Aries. On the contrary. By giving you this heads-up, I’m hoping you’ll be scrupulous and adroit in how you act in the early stages of a new project -- so scrupulous and adroit that you will sail on to the next stages. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Are you an evolving Taurus or an unevolving Taurus? Are you an aspiring master of gradual, incremental progress or a complacent excuse-maker who secretly welcomes inertia? Will the theme of your next social media post be “The Smart Art of Compromise” or “The Stingy Glory of Stubbornness”? I’m hoping you will opt for the former rather than the latter in each of the three choices I just offered. Your behavior in the coming weeks will be pivotal in your long-term ability to animate your highest self and avoid lapsing into your mediocre self. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): If you fly in a passenger jet from New York to London, the trip usually takes more than six hours. But on January 8, 2015, a powerful jet stream surging across the North Atlantic reduced that time significantly. With the wind’s extra push, several flights completed the trip in five hours and 20 minutes. I suspect you’ll have comparable assistance in the course of your upcoming journeys and projects, Gemini. You’ll feel like the wind is at your back. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Actor Keanu Reeves’ career ascended to a higher level when he appeared as a lead character in the film Speed. It was the first time he had been a headliner in a big-budget production. But he turned down an offer to reprise his starring role in the sequel, Speed 2. Instead he toured with his grunge band Dogstar and played the role of Hamlet in a production staged by a local theater company in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I admire him for being motivated more by love and passion than by fame and fortune. In my estimation, Cancerian, you face a choice that in some ways resembles Keanu’s, but in other ways doesn’t. You shouldn’t automatically assume that what your ego craves is opposed to what your heart yearns for and your soul needs. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): A Leo sculptor I know is working on a forty- foot-long statue of a lion. Another Leo friend borrowed $30,000 to build a recording studio in her garage so she can pursue her quixotic dream of a music career. Of my other Leo acquaintances, one is writing a memoir of her time as a black-market orchid smuggler, another just did four sky dives in three days, and another embarked on a long-postponed pilgrimage to Slovenia, land of her ancestors. What about you? Are there any breathtaking challenges or smart gambles you’re considering? I trust you can surf the same astrological wave. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): How sexy is it possible for you to be? I’m referring to authentic soul-stirring sexiness, not the contrived, glitzy, counterfeit version. I’m alluding to the irresistible magnetism that wells up in you when you tap in to your core self and summon a reverent devotion to your life’s mission. However sexy it is possible for you to be, Virgo, I suggest you unleash that magic in the coming weeks. It’s the most reliable strategy for attracting the spiritual experiences and material resources and psychological support you need. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): According to my analysis of the cosmic omens, your impact is rising. You’re gaining influence. More people are tuning in to what you have to offer. And yet your stress

© Copyright 2018 Rob Brezsny

levels also seem to be increasing. Why is that? Do you assume that having more power requires you to endure higher tension? Do you unconsciously believe that being more worried is the price of being more responsible? If so, banish that nonsense. The truth is this: The best way to manage your growing clout is to relax into it. The best way to express your growing clout is to relax into it. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): The immediate future will challenge you to revisit several fundamental Scorpio struggles. For best results, welcome these seeming intrusions as blessings and opportunities, and follow these guidelines: 1. Your control over external circumstances will increase in direct proportion to your control over your inner demons. 2. Your ability to do what you want will thrive to the degree that you stop focusing on what you don’t want. 3. Your skill at regulating and triumphing over chaos will be invincible if you’re not engrossed in blaming others. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): I’m about to say things that sound extraordinary. And it’s possible that they are in fact a bit overblown. But even if that’s the case, I trust that there is a core of truth in them. So rejoice in their oracular radiance. First, if you have been hoping for a miracle cure, the next four weeks will be a time when you’re more likely than usual to find it or generate it. Second, if you have fantasized about getting help to address a seemingly irremediable problem, asking aggressively for that help now will lead to at least a partial fix. Third, if you have wondered whether you could ever retrieve a lost or missing part of your soul, the odds are more in your favor than they’ve been in a long time. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The French government defines books as an “essential good,” along with water, bread, and electricity. Would you add anything to that list of life’s basics? Companionship? Stories? Deep sleep? Pleasurable exercise and movement? Once you identify your “essential goods,” I invite you to raise the level of reverence and care you give them. Take an oath to treat them as holy treasures. Boost your determination and ability to get all you need of their blessings. The coming weeks will be a favorable time to enhance your appreciation of the fundamentals you sometimes take for granted. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Buckingham Palace is the home and office of the Queen of England. It has been the main royal residence since Queen Victoria took the throne in 1837. But in earlier times, the site served other purposes. The 17th-century English lawyer Clement Walker described the building occupying that land as a brothel, a hotbed of “debauchery.” Before that the space was a mulberry garden where silkworms tuned mulberry leaves into raw material for silk fabrics. I see the potential for an almost equally dramatic transformation of a certain place in your life, Aquarius. Start dreaming and scheming about the possibilities. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Poet Carolyn Forché is a role model for how to leave one’s comfort zone. In her early career, she earned writing degrees at placid universities near her childhood home in the American Midwest. Her first book mined material about her family; its first poem is addressed to her grandmother. But then she relocated to El Salvador, where she served as a human rights advocate during that country’s civil war. Later she lived and wrote in Lebanon at the height of its political strife. Her drive to expand her range of experience invigorated her poetry and widened her audience. Would you consider drawing inspiration from Forché in the coming weeks and months, Pisces? I don’t necessarily recommend quite so dramatic a departure for you, but even a mild version will be well rewarded. Homework: Buy or make yourself a present that encourages you to be more generous. MIND,BODY & SPIRIT

CLARITY

BY BRONWYN ISON

H

ave you ever wondered how someone has achieved a certain goal? Or, obtained a distinct accolade? More than likely this person set a goal with absolute clarity? Knowing what you want and how you plan to achieve your goal is essential. Keep in mind you must be willing to pay the price to get there. The price may be late nights, early mornings, hustling on the weekends and missing out on certain things you love doing to build your dream. If you’re willing to do what it takes then it’s time to get to work. Defining your goals is everything. One must truly have clear goals and objectives. If you’re planning on building your career or your own business it’s essential to map out what it is you want. It’s important to map out clear intentions and what you’re trying to accomplish. If you don’t know, then sit down and start writing out your thoughts. You’ll absently wander aimlessly if you do not have a clear direction. All to look back own your life and wonder what happened. Making more money or building your career should not be your goal. Goals are very specific. You can have daily goals, weekly, monthly, yearly and lifetime aspirations. Yet, they’re nothing if you don’t put your thoughts into action. You must also have measurable goals. Say for instance you sell a product and you would like to exceed your sales by 15% from last year. This is a measurable goal. You can put a number on it and do your best to achieve your

written goal. You can also be very precise and detailed about what it is your trying to achieve. When I set my goals, I implement a lot of visualization. What does that mean? I see myself doing what I want. I write down what I’d like to see in my future. You may consider participating with a group and mapping out a vision board. This a great way to gain clarity. Plus, you’re sharing your ideas with others which may hold you responsible for carrying out your goals. You’ll be astonished by what you will do in your life if you make simple changes to your everyday life. Remember, no action, no reward. We have one opportunity in life to go after what we want. Neglect your naysayers and show them what you’re all about. Bronwyn Ison is the owner of Evolve Yoga & bronwynison.com. CANNABIS CORNER

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com

BY RUTH HILL R.N.

WHO WILL GET YOUR VOTE IN NOVEMBER?

I

n the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s many voters used access to abortion as the litmus test for voting. I was never a single issue voter. Now I have acquiesced. My litmus test for voting in the 2018 elections is if the candidate will vote to reclassify medical cannabis. Unfortunately, very few of our California legislatures voted for the CURES bill which would lead to speeding up the approval of experimental drugs for the terminally ill. There are so many legislators in resistance mode they are not thinking of the sick voters who do not obtain symptom relief from traditional pharmaceuticals. Sick people want to switch to a plant based medicine. Compromise is how bills get passed. What compromises will need to be made for Congress to pass a bill to reclassify cannabis? I am sure if you asked Congressmen Ruiz, Mayes, Feinstein, or Harris if they are aware of the US Government’s Patent #6630507 B1 on CBD they would not know what you are talking about. To have a patent approved, proof of effectiveness is required. I write these articles to allow voters to become more educated than our legislators, so we can demand they stop the hypocrisy. This is the year for change. The cannabis industry is exploding everywhere in the World except within the bowels of the deep federal bureaucracy. The US Government’s 2003 patent declares Cannabinoids as medicine. The patent states: “This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia.” Israel is not only researching cannabis but prescribing it prophylactically. We need to have the restraints off the research and development. Many states who had single category criteria, i.e. only for seizures or pain, are adding criteria to their cannabis laws. Greedy states are pricing the product out of reach. Who can afford the $200 permission card plus taxes to use medical cannabis? Banking still is an issue. All this money is in cash which is very unsafe to not only the dispensaries but to the public as well. Now we have PotCoin (https:// www.potcoin.com) instead of Bitcoin. The way forward is to follow nations like Israel and the UK who are years ahead

28

of America in research, development and use, based on scientific evidence. As CV Weekly celebrates its six-year anniversary following the pulse of Coachella Valley, I am very optimistic about the direction of the cannabis industry. If users become active in writing letters to Congress and the President, we can finally bring cannabis out of the black market. Cannabis users have the power to take back control of our own medicine cabinets.

hink your big break is never going to occur? Listen up. Stop the negativity and get prepared! You never know when fate is going to tap you on the shoulder to take your place on stage. Whether it’s waiting in the wings for your major acting role, or sitting in the dugout hoping that coach calls your name, ready yourself to step up. Recently a fellow named Scott Foster was waiting on the bench. On Thursday March 29th, Scott, a CPA in his day job and part of the recreational goaltenders who staff home games for the Chicago Blackhawks, got the call. Due to injuries on the team, Scott was put in the game for an amazing 14 minutes as an emergency goalie. During that time he blocked all seven attempts on goal and a crowd of over 20,000 chanted his name. How did our hockey hero position himself for this opportunity? He laid the groundwork. Are you positioned for your next big move? Perhaps you’re vying for your first leadership role. Worried you’ll be passed over when an opening occurs? Well you won’t be if, like Scott, you suit up and take a place on the bench. Moving into a leadership position begins with honing your people skills. If managing a staff does not feel natural at this point, no worries. Leadership is a skill that can be learned and developed. Springboard into

position by exhibiting passion for the work you produce. Enthusiasm is contagious and people will notice and respect your diligence. Learn from other leaders. Look around your organization and identify the best of the best, then study those role models. What qualities does Manager X possess that makes others want to support and follow? Make a list of those attributes and emulate X’s behavior. Remember leadership is indentified in words and attitudes. To be considered for a promotion, you also need to have some wins under your belt. Have you successfully managed some projects, contributed on a cross-functional team or stepped in while your manager was on vacation? Be on the lookout for opportunities to position yourself as a leader. Rate your communication skills. If you’re not scoring a ten out of ten, work on your listening and verbal skills. Leaders direct with clarity. Make sure you articulate your vision clearly. And as I mentioned earlier, suit up. That means identifying with the mission and being a solid member of the team. Keep fine-tuning your skills, get in the ready position and one day you’ll be called off the bench to perform. Good luck! Sunny Simon is the owner of Raise the Bar High Life and Career Coaching.
