Steve is an alt-folksinger, master storyteller, prolific songwriter, and comedian. He’s one of the greatest solo entertainers roaming planet earth today. No Depression Magazine crowned him, “A sardonic provocateur with a lighthearted acoustic-driven wit, suggesting at times a sunnier, less psychedelic Todd Snider, or maybe a less wan, washed Jackson Browne,” while the Associated Press dubbed him “part busker, part Iggy Pop and part Robin Williams, a freewheeling folkie with a quick wit and big heart.” Steve has released 20+ albums, and has co-written with Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull, Nicki Bluhm, Jewel (on the mega hit “You Were Meant For Me”) Oliver Wood, and many more. While he

He’s teamed up with the Joshua Tree Music Festival family, and it all takes place at the festival venue at the Joshua Tree Lake Campground in the shadows of the otherworldly Joshua Tree National Park.clearly LOVES to perform, Steve is equally inspired by encouraging others to hone their songwriting skills. For the SongSchool, he’s enlisted his wildly talented friends – Maya De Vitry, Amber Rubarth and Tim Bluhm (of The Mother Hips) – to coach up songsmiths of all levels – newbies and old pros alike.

What is Bahootenzie you ask? Says Steve, “My dearly departed Dad, Joe Poltz, used to say it after he’d cough or sneeze. One day I asked him what it meant, and he said “many blessings”. And I said, “Oh, I thought it meant; let’s go nuts”. Then dad suggested “let’s combine it and make it “many blessings, let’s go nuts!” I loved that. So instead of shouting “many blessings, let’s go nuts”, I just say Bahootenzie!” About the SongSchool – May 2-4 All levels of writers, players and music lovers are welcome. Even if you’ve never written a song before, you will. You’ll learn from experienced songsmiths, Steve Poltz, Maya de Vitry, Amber Rubarth and Tim Bluhm. Steve Poltz is back in the high desert to present the 2nd annual Bahootenzie; a SongSchool that will happen on May 2-4, leading up to the annual Joshua Tree Folkfest on May 5-6, that takes place at The Joshua Tree Lake Campground.

Although he’s best known for co-

writing Jewel’s massive late ‘90s hit, “You Were Meant For Me,” as a solo artist, he has released over 20 albums. He’s also collaborated with celebrated musicians like Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull and Oliver Wood. No Depression magazine referred to him as “a sardonic provocateur, with a light-hearted acoustic driven wit.”

Bahootenzie gets its name from a phrase Steve’s late dad, Joe, used to say whenever someone sneezed or coughed. As a kid, Steve thought it meant “let’s go nuts.” But his dad regarded it as more of a blessing. So, they opted to combine the sentiments as “many blessings, let’s go nuts.”

The SongSchool welcomes all levels of

writers, players and music lovers. Steve, along with experienced songsmiths like Maya de Vitry, Amber Rubarth and Tim Bluhm (of The Mother Hips) are on hand to mentor aspiring musicians and writers. Small group instruction in a magical setting offers the ideal blend of creativity, encouragement and kindness. As much as Steve loves performing, he truly enjoys the fine art of creating a song, writing music and teaching others to discover their muse.

The Folkfest which happens Friday and Saturday, May 5th and 6th, features performances by Steve, as well as Keller Williams, Rainbow Girls, Glen Phillips (of Toad The Wet Sprocket), Tim Bluhm, Maya de Vitry and Amber Rubarth. The electric vehicle (EV) industry has been growing significantly for years, with tech giant Tesla grabbing much of the headlines and the Nissan Leaf a mainstay. However, most other significant automakers have also already committed to building more electric vehicles for a market that will eventually be entirely electric. Under a groundbreaking new state regulation, 35% of new 2026 car models sold in California must be zero-

emissions, ramping up to 100% by 2035.

Every major automobile manufacturer is competing for its own market share with electric vehicles (EVs), and the majority is moving away from producing conventional gas-powered vehicles this decade. By 2025, General Motors has committed to building 30 new worldwide EVs, Jaguar has committed to building only electric vehicles by 2025, and Ford has committed to doing the same by 2030. By 2025, Volvo wants

each day. The new infrastructure bill aim to provide nearly $5 billion over five years to help states create a network of EV charging stations. Depending on the type of charging station you find, charging your automobile might take anything from 10 minutes...to 8 hours!

Why Should You Buy an Electric Vehicle?

When compared to regular gas-powered vehicles, electric vehicles have a lot lesser fuel expenses. A gallon of gasoline costs almost twice as much as the similar cost of running an electric automobile. This is particularly true if drivers choose off-peak power tariffs when charging at home. Electric rates are also more steady than oil prices.

to have half of its vehicles be hybrids and the other half be battery-powered EVs. Additionally, they want to be totally carbonneutral by 2040.

Clearly, electric vehicles (EVs) are the future of transportation, and they’re coming to a driveway near you.

BUYING AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE: Research the vehicle

Looking for an electric vehicle (EV) or a plug-in hybrid differs slightly from looking for a conventional gas-powered automobile. As with buying any automobile, the first step in shopping for a plug-in vehicle is to have a clear idea of what you want, or at the least, have a short list of potential purchases.

Also, you should consider an EV that qualifies for additional manufacturer rebates and tax credits.

Cost of EVs

Electric vehicles are often more expensive to purchase than their gasolinepowered counterparts. However, these prices continue dropping, Tesla has cut its prices on some of its models to compete against other electric vehicle manufacturers. Current starting prices of EVs can range between $30,000 to $40,000, however, certain provinces/states and the IRS provide incentives, rebates, and credits that might make them even more affordable.

Additionally, the IRS is giving tax credits of up to $7,500 for clean vehicles purchased in 2023 and beyond.

Available Models and Types

Electric cars come in a variety of forms and sizes, ranging from little hatchbacks to luxurious SUVs. Some are electric variants of well-known models. EVs are increasingly modern cars designed to run only on electricity.

Technically, there are two types of plugin models: battery electric vehicles (BEVs), which operate entirely on electricity, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), which may run on electricity for a limited distance before converting to gas/electric hybrid mode.

Range of EVs

The typical range is 120 to 300 miles on a single charge, depending on road conditions and driving habits. That is plenty for most people who travel fewer than 40 miles

• Electric vehicles have the lowest maintenance, repair, and tire costs and fuel savings.

• Because they have fewer and simpler components and don’t require fluid changes or tune-ups, most EVs offer cheaper repairs.

• Although it might take some time to recoup the cost of installing solar panels, “fuel” expenditures could be fully eliminated when paired with a residential solar system.

• EVs don’t emit any of the smogemitting tailpipe emissions that are a major cause of asthma and other air pollutionrelated diseases and global warming gasses.

• Due to the absence of engine noise, EVs are quiet.

• Home charging is practical; some vehicles can even power your house when the power goes out.

To Conclude

There are currently more than ever newly manufactured electric vehicles on the road. Some nations and automakers have already announced plans to phase out the sale of gasoline and diesel vehicles in the very near future. It is up to you to determine if the benefits exceed the drawbacks of owning an EV. Early electric vehicles had gasoline engines removed and electric motors installed in order to meet California’s strict clean-air standards. Only a few of these “compliance cars” were made without much in the way of innovative technology or marketing to draw in customers. As global manufacturers scale up production supported by more than half a trillion dollars in new investment, new electric vehicles will provide higher performance and promise to be less expensive than conventional gaspowered automobiles. So, despite their limitations, electric vehicles can be a costeffective, environment-friendly means of transportation and an increasingly plausible answer to the world’s pollution problems. Hopefully, this article helps you with your decision-making process when making your next vehicle purchase!

BLONDSHELL “BLONDSHELL” (PARTISAN RECORDS)

The first three tracks off her selftitled debut offer a crash course in the many moods of Blondshell.

“Veronica Mars,” named for Kristen Bell’s 2004 TV series, opens with tensile electric strumming. The mood feels ominous as deadpan vocals casually reveal “’Veronica Mars, 2000 aughts, Logan’s a dick, I’m learning that’s hot.” Scathing staccato guitar riff-age suddenly hijack’s the blasé arrangement, unleashing an acrid guitar solo that veers away from the intime bedroom confessional, hewing more closely to Metal guitarist God Yngwie Malmsteen’s neoclassical shred. “Kiss City” nonchalantly flips the script, as a kick-drum beat gives way to warm piano notes that trace sophisticated, Burt Bacharach-y chord progressions. Gossamer guitars echo and sway, above agile bass lines and an elastic rhythm. Her intoxicating vocal delivery is matched by lyrics that seem equally smitten; “Kiss city, just look me in the eye when I’m about to finish, Kiss city, I think my kink is when you tell me that I’m pretty.” This postcoital bliss is momentarily derailed by a squally guitar solo. Meanwhile, “Olympus.” is all jangly acoustic guitars, thready bass and a chunky backbeat. Vocals mew and purr as lyrics try and unpack a chemicallyinduced folie a deux. The mood shifts from clandestine to contrite; “Can’t get through the winter, at your house sweat out the drugs all through the summer, let my heart sleep in the gutter, wish I remember when we kissed, but now it’s faded, cuz I always just replayed it til I left/I wanna save myself you’re part of my addiction, I just keep you in the kitchen while I burn, burn, burn, burn.” Reverb-drenched riffs collide with piquant guitars on the break, working the steps back to sentience.

Blondshell (ne’ Sabrina Titelbaum) grew up in New York City, Manhattan specifically. One of five siblings (including a twin brother), she was raised by her single dad, who earned a living as a hedge-fund mogul. (According to Sabrina, her mom, who died in 2018, wasn’t around much when she was a kid). She grew up listening to Classic Rock, and her dad took her to see Bob Dylan, the Stones and Cher when she was young. She cites the Broadway musical Jersey Boys as a formative influence. Adele and Amy Winehouse also crept in there, she taught herself to play “Back To Black” on the piano. Attending the exclusive Dalton School, she became infatuated with The Strokes and The Killers. Fake I.D. in hand, she began frequenting Bowery clubs. The National, as well as Lana Del Rey and Lorde gave her a newfound respect for lyrics, especially those imbued with an intense specificity. During this period, she discovered that songwriting allowed her to express her feelings she couldn’t articulate through conversation.

Sabrina moved to L.A. for college in 2015. She was accepted into the Pop Program at USC’s Thorton School. The course was designed for students interested in “pursuing a career in the performance of Popular Music.” Although she studied Classical and Jazz theory, along with the art of harmony, she dropped out after two years. Diving headlong into creating and performing her own music, she truncated her last name and began releasing music as Baum.

She began collaborating with Yves Rothman (Yves Tumor, Girlpool and Porches) and had nearly completed an EP when the pandemic hit. By then, her song “Fuckboy” had already garnered two million streams. But once the lockdown happened, she found herself drawn to bands like Nirvana and Hole. Those influences began to re-shape her writing style. Her perspective also shifted when she opted to get sober.

Her new songs also took a page from writers like Rachel Cusk, Clare Sestanovich, Patti Smith and Rebecca Solnit. Inspired by the candor of Solnit’s memoir, Reflections Of My Nonexistence. She resisted the urge to trivialize the things she had been going through.

Once the lockdown was lifted, she let Yves know she wasn’t interested in releasing the Baum EP they had completed. She played him a rough demo of “Olympus” and he was floored. So they scrapped the EP, and she adopted a new nom de Rock, Blondshell. She created a clutch of new songs. Once a Soundcloud link began circulating, it set off a bidding war between record labels. She ended up signing with Partisan Records.

This is one of those unicorn records where each song is better than the one that precedes it. Both “Sober Together” and “Joiner” reveal a penchant for conflating romantic obsession and addiction. The former opens with some breezy vocalese and shivery guitars. When she gets down to business, her demeanor feels opaque and inscrutable; “You’ve been in the bathroom, perfect for an asshole, I can see your jaw move, try to keep it stable, and I get it, I can see right through you, only because I have the same problem.” Loping bass lines and a clanky beat are salted in the mix. The lush arrangement is juxtaposed by lyrics that work hard to justify and absolve indulgent behavior; “We got sober together, but you’ve been going back, and I can’t blame you, it’s in the blood, but part of the disease

is giving up, call me, I wanna be there for you, but not in a way that lets you take me down with you.” A shimmery guitar coda echo the meticulous ache that defined The Smiths’ earliest songs.

The latter offers a blurry polaroid of post-adolescent angst. Ringing guitars, slurred keys, angular bass and a propulsive beat recall ‘90s buzz bands like Elastica and that dog. Lyrics pivot from caustic contempt; “Think you watched way too much HBO growing up, now you got one arm cut and when you eat you throw up,” to grudging affection. Stacked harmonies coalesce on the hooky chorus; “I think I wanna save you, I think I wanna join in, I think wanna save you, two people from the bottom of the bin.” On the bridge, the melody shapeshifts once more, as guitars shudder and skitter across thumpy bass lines and a cantilevered rhythm before paring down to angelic vocals and strummy acoustic guitars, stopping on a dime.

Equally irresistible is “Salad,” a succinct saga of betrayal and revenge. Twinkly piano notes are bookended by sinewy guitars, spidery bass lines and a rumbling backbeat. Blondshell’s vocals are fittingly feral as the opening couplet quietly plots a bit of biblical retribution; “Keep an eye out for his pick-up, I know all about it, I would take a gun out, put some poison in his salad and it wouldn’t be so bad, it wouldn’t hurt the world, look what you did, you’ll make a killer of a Jewish girl.” Despite her sangfroid, the calibrated chaos between verses tells a different story, as the instrumentation alternately revs up and simmers down. Turning the other cheek seems out of the question as she addresses her tormentor; “It wouldn’t be so bad, it shouldn’t hurt like this, look what you did, you made a killer of a pacifist.” As the arrangement pitches and roils it’s swept into a sonic maelstrom that mirrors the queasy sensation of treachery.

“Sepsis” drafts off the quiet-loud dynamic that The Pixies pioneered and

Nirvana perfected. Swoony guitars collide with boomerang bass lines and a junky backbeat. Lyrically, Blondshell draws decades of medical knowledge, gleaned from repeated viewings of House and Grey’s Anatomy. Pretzel logic allows her to reconnect with a douchey ex; “I’m going back to him, I know my therapist’s pissed, we both know he’s a dick, at least it’s the obvious kind.” But her hollow rationales ring false; “I’m gonna find a cure, if I’m in love nothing hurts, give enough make it work, clarify what I deserve.” A glassy guitar solo leads to a halfhearted epiphany; “He wears a front-facing cap, the sex is almost always bad, I don’t care cuz I’m in love, I don’t know him well enough, what am I projecting, he’s gonna start infecting my life, it’ll hit all at once, like sepsis.” A bit of distorto feedback ushers the track to a close.

“Tarmac” is the album’s magnum opus. Serpentine electric riffs brush up against hushed acoustic chords that are punctuated by fingers on frets. The arrangement pingpongs from sludgy dirge on the verses to a buoyant Bubblegum chorus. Emotions see-saw between resignation; “I can’t stay away from my new friends, I think I’m losing myself, I’m in love with a feeling, not with anyone or any real thing,” to revelation; “Everything revolves around kissing and when he’s here, I’m alone, I’m alone, in his car, in his arms, then it hits that I’m damned, that I’m damned because I can’t make it better.” A caterwauling guitar solo underscores her steely fragility.

The record closes with the haunting “Dangerous.” Searching guitar chords wrap around diffident, slightly self-conscious moments that are at once perspicacious and wildly naïve; “Asking you, did I bring down the vibe, after the hangout, he and I made out, and I think I hate it, but I initiated, feeling all that shame, I wanna break, I wanna take the night off, but they’ll forget if I’m gone/I wanna have a drink, emotional vacation, I don’t know moderation, I just know enough to know that I don’t know a thing, and I want someone to take the blame.” It’s a raw, slightly callow and brutally honest end to a great record.

43 years ago, on The Pretenders’ selftitled debut, Chrissie Hynde casually snarled “I shot my mouth off and you showed me what that hole was for” on the scabrous track “Tattooed Love Boys” and Rock & Roll felt the paradigm shift. 13 years later, it shifted yet again on “Fuck And Run,” from Liz Phair’s debut, Exile In Guyville.” Following an uneventful hook-up, she laments “I can feel it in my bones, I’m going to spend another year alone, it’s fuck and run, fuck and run, even when I was 17, it’s fuck and run, fuck and run, even when I was 12.” Now, 30 years later, Blondshell has picked up that gauntlet, as she attempts to navigate the rocky shoals of sex and romance. Candid and complicated, she beguiles the listener even as she loses the thread. Blondshell is one of those records that reveals something new with each spin.

THE VINO VOICE

PALM SPRINGS PRESENTS: RACQUET CLUB SPIRITS!

One of the most exciting beverage news stories to come out of Palm Springs recently is the success of Racquet Club Spirits. For those of you already in the know—this may be old news. But for the rest of us around town & country, we are all delighted to come upon this wonderful story, and, to learn that a premium world class liquor company calls this international destination city, home base.

But a lot of you are in the know! Racquet Club Spirits Vodka and Bourbon Whiskey currently sells at our local supermarkets such as Albertsons and Vons; wine and liquor stores such as Total Wines & More, Bouchet Fine Wine & Liquor, Mirage Wine & Liquor—and our long time favorite, Hi Time Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa. The Whole Foods chain carries the brand all over Southern California—for which I believe the Palm Desert store will soon follow suit.

And, as your somm-about-town and friendly neighborhood wine steward over at the Palm Springs Ralphs Market, you best believe I’ll be on the case to get these delicious spirits on our shelves, not only in P.S. but in the other Ralphs in our valley. I know, so many of you loyal readers across town actually shop at the Indio Ralphs, but you’re always so sweet to try my beverage recommendations. You’ll thank me, again, when Racquet Club Sprits comes to your store aisles.

So why am I so enthused about this brand?

Recently I had the privilege to join Jane Booth, business maven and consultant to RCS (you know I love dropping names and lifting up our local business leaders), over at Eight4Nine Restaurant & Lounge located in the fashionable Uptown Design District of Palm Springs.

Meeting in the lounge area, Jane introduced me to Brian Harke and Matthew Winks, owners of our now favorite LGBTQ+ owned spirits company, Racquet Club Spirits. After the pleasant introductions, the vodka and bourbon whiskey were served to me neat so I could take all the time to view, smell, taste, and consider while I chatted with the two guys.

Now by no means am I a super-smeller, but I took in wafts of pleasant aromas immediately when the drinks were brought to the table. And not only from the whiskey but from the vodka as well—that translates to lively liquor, and I was immediately on board!

The Racquet Club Vodka, which is filtered 7 times using a carbon, with all-natural carbon originating from coconut husks, offered whispering aromas of vanilla and citrus. The aromas melded into the clean and crisp palate with a mouthfeel as smooth as can be. I knew a Martini would soon be in my future.

The vodka has won several awards including a silver award from the New York World Wine and Spirits competition. The bourbon has received two double gold awards from the Sip Awards and the San Diego Spirits Festival.

The Racquet Club Bourbon Whiskey was a great surprise. Expecting the traditional “sweet” note of bourbon, I found some of my favorite rye-spice notes in the mix. And rightly so: the whiskey is actually a blend of 60% Corn, 36% Rye, and 4% Malted Barley.

The immediate aromas caused me to spend about ten to fifteen minutes more to savor the bouquet from the glass it was poured. Finding vanilla, cocoa, nuts, and fruit, I then finally took in a full mouthful and found flavors of caramel, vanilla, chocolate, and smoke. The mid-palate showed a balance of roasted nuts and my

favorite rye spice. A nice caramel finish played out. Again, I enjoyed this whiskey immensely because of the included rye.

Besides enjoying the booze, I really had a good time chatting with Jane and the guys. In the past few months, both Brian and Matthew have made a lot of press around town.

Palm Springs magazine recently wrote: “The spirit of individuality and fun from the historic Racquet Club spur a desert couple to create a new Palm Springs-inspired liquor brand. A marketing director and commercial producer together for more than 30 years, Movie Colony couple Brian Harke and Matthew Winks have spun their passion for cocktails into a new line of Palm Springs-inspired spirits, Racquet Club Spirits.”

And Booze Business, whose writer has recently moved here to Rancho Mirage, said, “The owners, Brian and Matthew, come from outside the Booze Business world but have quickly learned the business and what it takes to succeed. Brian was a marketing director, and Matthew was a TV commercial producer. They used their creative background to work on the classic bottle design with a [Palm Springs] vintage label.

For you readers who are now pleasantly inform by this article, I importune you to go to their fun and wonderful website at racquetclubspirits.com, to catch the story how the idea and work served as a tribute to the style and swagger of Palm Springs’ Racquet Club. Already known by many of our locals, the venue was a desert oasis that became Hollywood’s legendary playground. The Racquet Club of Palm Springs, a former resort established by Hollywood actors Ralph Bellamy and Charles Farrell in 1934, inspired the branding.

The company’s website lists many wellknown cocktail recipes their liquors can be used for, such as the Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Whiskey Sour, Mint Julip, and a regular and espresso Martini and Lemon Twist. And of course, at our table, my desires to taste the liquor in a classic cocktail were answered as I enjoyed a Martini with a lemon twist, and an Old Fashioned. The concoctions were delicious; our sunhats off to the bar at Eight4Nine!

Cocktails are also being poured with Racquet Club Spirits at the Chili Bar Palm Springs and at Palm Springs’ famed Tropicale Restaurant.

“We’re about giving our consumers a good experience,” said Matthew. “Something that tastes good and they’re going to like, makes them feel a certain way and has a certain vibe when they’re drinking it.” Cheers!

PET PL ACE TIPS TO FIND A MISSING DOG

MISSING

get a missing pet returned safely is to put his photo and location on www.NextDoor. com a free site that sends the information out to thousands of people near where you live. Post your dog’s photo on Facebook and ask your friends to SHARE and TAG. Post on the Facebook page “Lost and Found Pets in the Coachella Valley” and “Dogs in the 760”. Peanut

Last seen in Indio near Circle K on Monroe & 42.

If you are a pet owner, you may eventually experience having one go missing. It can happen to anyone. This week a phone call came into Loving All Animals from a distraught woman in town for the Coachella concert when her dog went missing. Chihuahua pup Peanut jumped out of her vehicle at the car charging station in Indio by Walmart on Jackson Street just off the 10 freeway. The family with young girls undertook a mass search to find their cherished Peanut. I gave them some additional things to do. Peanut is skittish which makes the search more challenging as she might not easily be retrieved by strangers.

PLEASE KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR PRECIOUS

be traveling between Monroe and Jackson in North Indio, coming out in the early morning and evenings when the weather is cooler. It would be a miracle, but someone reading this may have picked her up. She is a tiny 5 pounds. The little dog is microchipped but was not wearing her collar with the engraved tag and phone number. Peanut’s family eventually had to return to their home in Los Angeles, but they respond to phone calls and will return if there is another sighting of their beloved pet. Don’t chase her if she starts to run. Call (818)674-0632 or (310)503-9537. Countless dogs go missing every day. It happens more often when someone else is taking care of them or when they are in an unfamiliar area. It’s heartbreaking not to know how they are, whether they are hungry, injured, or even if they are still alive. Include as many people as possible in your efforts,

and DON’T GIVE UP. Organize a search party. Here are some tips should your dog ever go missing.

CREATE A FLYER – Not computer savvy? Find a young person to help. Boiler plates to make flyers with your dog’s photo are available on www.bestfriends.org or www. petbond.com. Put up flyers on bulletin boards including Starbucks, vet clinics, animal shelters, groomers, and on telephone poles. Pass out flyers to postal workers, gardeners, utility workers, tree trimmers, patrolling security guards and police officers, and others who work outside.

MAKE SIGNS – Large, colorful, eyecatching size signs can be made at the printers and posted on telephone poles, at dog parks, and at intersections controlled by traffic lights.

SOCIAL MEDIA – The quickest way to

MEET DILL

This adorable male large breed puppy and his siblings was rescued by Loving All Animals along with 3 siblings. They are 10 weeks old, very active, need a yard for exercise and people with the time to potty train & provide care. Call (760) 834-7000 for an appointment to meet them.

GO DOOR TO DOOR IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD – Lost dogs that are friendly often end up in a within a 10-block radius from your home. Go door-to-door in the immediate neighborhood. Neighbors will pick up a wandering dog to keep it safe. Check backyards, vacant homes, fields, schools, businesses, and underneath cars. Children are often a good source of information about stray pets in their neighborhood.

PLACE CLOTHING WITH YOUR SCENT OUTSIDE YOUR HOUSE – Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and this might lure them back home.

CHECK LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTERS – Go in person to your local public shelter since you are the best one to recognize your pet. All shelters check for microchips and ID tags, but sometimes these get lost. Return to the shelter every few days. Look in the kennels, search the “Found” book, the “Dead” book, and fill out a lost report at the front desk. Check with private shelters and rescues.

CONTACT THE MEDIA – Check to see if local television and radio stations have programs to help with missing dogs. Post a notice in local newspapers such as the Desert Sun and Penny Saver.

DON’T GIVE UP! – Most missing pets are returned to their owners within a short time. Others come back home weeks or months later. Some that are microchipped turn up years later in shelters thousands of miles away. Unneutered male dogs are much more likely to run away, and this is yet another reason to sterilize your pet.

Email me with other ideas that can included in future articles. Paws are crossed for Peanut’s safe return!

As the Giving Sponsor of Fashion Week El Paseo 2023 for the second consecutive year, Rancho Mirage resident Bobbi Lampros is shinning a light on five nonprofits within our Valley. These deserving nonprofit organizations celebrated at this year’s Fashion Week El Paseo included Desert Arc, Safehouse Of The Desert, Oak Grove Sanctuary, Mizell Center’s Meals On Wheels, and Palm Springs Pathfinders.

Having grown up on a farm in rural Oregon, Lampros was raised by hard-working parents, who had seven children and very little money. Lambros fondly recalls growing up that her mother “always found a way to find people who were poorer than we were, in order to help them.” Because of my mother, I grew up knowing that helping others, especially the less visible, was the right thing to do.”

Even as a farm girl, Lampros always had a flare for fashion, because she knew she could wear clothes to express her personality. She would even pick strawberries to afford school clothes she liked. As she grew older, Lampros thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of helping other people look good without spending a lot of money.

“Desert Arc is grateful for the kindness of benefactress Bobbi Lampros, in opening the door to Fashion Week El Paseo to our nonprofit organization,” said Richard Balocco, President/CEO of Desert Arc. Her belief in Desert Arc’s mission to enhance the quality of life and create opportunities for people with disabilities took the form of our first-time participation in an extraordinary evening as a proud beneficiary of this vogue event. It was truly an amazing runway of networking, and gave Desert Arc entrée to a new audience of potential supporters. Reflecting on her tour of Desert Arc and drawing on this experience, our activation during the reception took the form of a showcase and sale of jewelry and artwork designed and created by people with disabilities. Her generosity and philanthropic spirit is a gift beyond measure to Desert Arc.”

Lampros’ hope as the Giving Sponsor of Fashion Week El Paseo was to raise visibility on the critical work these nonprofits do in our community, and to encourage attendees to donate their time and financial resources to these deserving organizations.

“One of the best things we can give ourselves as a gift is to give back to others,” Lampros commented.

On Wednesday, March 22nd, the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising Debut Collection was presented by Education Sponsor Jordan Schnitzer, benefitting Desert Arc. The evening’s festivities began with an elegant and fun Reception at 7:00 pm followed by an extraordinary Runway Show at 8:00 pm attended by several hundred people. The Fashion Institute of Design

and Merchandising’s graduating third-year couture students revealed their Debut Couture Collection during the show. Each of these emerging designers presented a unique and modern take on what’s next in the world of Fashion. Collections shown during the evening featured designers Joel Elliott, Esther Gaor, Susan Lizotte, Ethan Martin, Yubin Min, Cole Moscaret, Thierry Kepgang Nana, and Sasha Swedlund. While their collections were decidedly personal and individualistic, overarching themes of sustainability, self-assuredness, and growth wove them together with a sense of harmony that was found to uplift audience members.

“It’s important that everyone, especially young people, have a chance to make their dreams and hopes soar,” commented Jordan Schnitzer.

STAGECOACH HISTORY

With attendance estimated at 75,000, the Stagecoach Music Festival is one of the largest country music festivals each year. On the grassy lawns of the Empire Polo Club, the festival takes its name from an iconic image of the Old West. When most of us think of a stagecoach, the Wells Fargo Wagon typically comes to mind. The stagecoach linked western mining towns with more developed cities to the East.

These wheeled vehicles were pulled by horses in stages. At each stage, a fresh horse team would be used to continue the journey. Each day, a stagecoach could travel sixty to seventy miles. To put this in perspective, a trip from Palm Springs to Los Angeles would take two days compared to the two hours it can take today (traffic permitting).

The first stagecoaches occurred in 1610 in a route from Edinburgh, Scotland to Leith, Scotland. This method of transport was popular until the expansion of train routes in the 1800s.

As travel by stagecoach could take days, coaching inns began to pop up along the roads. William Shakespeare performed his first plays at a coaching inn – The George Inn located in Southwark, England. The George Inn was built in 1677 on the southern banks of the River Thames in London. The George is the last of the original coaching inns still standing in London.

As people moved west as part of the Gold Rush, Henry Wells and William Fargo opened the Wells Fargo stagecoach line in 1852 to

shuttle people, supplies, and gold dust to and from the mining towns of California to all parts east. Wells and Fargo also helped to found American Express Company, now better known for its credit card.

Headquartered in San Francisco, Wells Fargo set up the precursor to its banking offices with its delivery routes. Seven years later, Wells Fargo Bank was established.

As mining increased, silver began the precious metal that needed to be shipped. Saddled with loads of silver and gold, these stagecoaches were the obvious targets of outlaw gangs. Despite stagecoaches being an easy target, Wells Fargo would guarantee delivery and insure shippers against losses. Shipments would be guarded by men riding shotgun.

In 1860, the precursor to the US Postal Service began. The Pony Express used eighty riders and 400 horses to deliver letters across the west. At its start, the Pony Express charged $5.00 for the delivery of a letter. Nearly two hundred Pony Express offices lined its delivery route. The most famous of its riders was William Cody aka Buffalo Bill. In one of his legendary rides, Buffalo Bill rode 322 miles over 22 hours while using 21 horses. Only eighteen months after its start, the Pony Express went bankrupt. The use of telegraph lines helped to undermine the high cost of running a delivery route.

By 1870, the use of stagecoaches was falling as train routes expanded.

Stagecoach Mary is known as the last stagecoach driver. The stuff of legends, Mary

Fields was born as an orphaned slave raised by nuns. As an adult, this six-foot rifle-toting woman was known to smoke cigars, drink hard and fight. Mary became a stagecoach driver in 1895 at the age of sixty – a job she held until her retirement eight years later. As a result of her work and large personality, Stagecoach Mary’s was exempted from local legislation banning women from bars.

When you think of the Stagecoach Music Festival once it has passed, you can think of more than just the fine performances of the weekend. You now know some of the history of the iconic name that headlines the festival.

consideration. Naturally, a local lawyer will be more convenient and s/he will not have to travel long distances to court and charge you for the extra time.

Reputation is important because local lawyers have been practicing in “your court”. It is important your attorney has an established reputation and knows the DA’s and Judges.

Personalized Attention is also a factor, as local lawyers may able to give you more attention and focus on your case. They are not juggling a large number of cases all over Southern California.

Ultimately, the most important factor when hiring a lawyer for a DUI case, is finding someone who has the Experience and Expertise, to get the best possible outcome for you.

unfairly. A good DUI attorney may be able to challenge the results of these tests. The Breathalyzer may also not be functioning and Calibrated Properly, and also provide a wrong reading. Of course Prescriptions and health conditions may also be a factor.

DUI cases are among the most challenging Criminal cases, as you must deal with the Court and DMV…each independent of the other. My USC Pre Law/ Pre Med science background helps me understand the chemical tests.

COACHELLA is a breeding ground for Arrests! It is also an Accident waiting to happen? Whenever thousands of people are crammed together, there is always a potential for needing a lawyer. Cars exit at the same time! People are high from drinking and drugs in the sun! Tempers flare from waiting in lines for entrance and exiting… and inside the event for late bands! Truly, it is a matter of time until an Accident or Arrest brings out Indio’s finest in their Black and Whites.

The most common Arrests are for DUI, Drunk in Public, Possession of Drugs, Minor

in Possession and False ID. Thus, during and after the concert, phones ring with clients arrested for these charges, or who have just been in an auto accident.

If these sound familiar, you need a good Local lawyer. Now how do you find a good attorney, and should it be from your home town or a local Coachella Valley attorney?

There are a many reasons to hire a local lawyer… but why local? Initially, Familiarity with local laws and courts is crucial. Your Beverly Hills lawyer will NOT be familiar with the laws and court procedures in Indio’s Larson Justice Center. Convenience is also a

There are a few potential defenses that might be used in an Indio DUI case that are factually driven. Some common Defenses to a DUI charge include a lack of Probable cause. This occurs when the cop did not have a valid reason for stopping your vehicle and thus the evidence may be deemed inadmissible in court. Illegal search and seizure also occurs when the police violate your Fourth Amendment rights by searching your vehicle or seizing evidence without probable cause.

Sometimes the Field Sobriety Tests (FST’s) are Administered properly? These tests can be subjective, and may be administered improperly or evaluated

Upon a DUI, the CDL will be taken and the driver will receive a Pink Piece of Paper, which is a Temporary License with the administrative per se info. It explains the driver has 10 calendar days to request a DMV Hearing and a Stay, which protects the client’s right to a hearing and driving privileges from a suspension. If a hearing is not requested the license will be suspended on the 30th day after the arrest.

DESERT LONGEVITY INSTITUTE ANTI-AGING & HORMONE

CLINIC NOW ACCEPTS MEDICARE AND OTHER INSURANCES

Do you want to feel better and get in shape? Do you want to sleep better, look younger, think more positively? Do you want better libido? The answer to all the prior statements should be YES. If not, perhaps you ought to seek professional counseling.

Being healthy is not vanity. Vanity, as described by the Oxford Dictionary is: Having an excessively high opinion of one’s own attainments and qualities, or excessive desire for the praise of others. And as described in the Holy Bible: Ecclesiastes 1:2. The Hebrew word for “vanity” used in this verse literally means “vapor” or “breath.” It can also be translated “meaningless,” “emptiness,” or “futility”.

It’s a fair assessment that ancient Greeks embodied the term “vanity”. All one must do is research ancient Greek sculptures, and one is faced with a myriad of false gods, self-absorbed and self-adoring sculptures that are enough to make anyone who thinks with their mind and not their eyes feel nauseous.

For some reason, being healthy in our modern culture is being tugged in two polarizing directions. There are those who have become obsessed [which is a mental disorder that has the ability to manifest as a physical disease], while others who struggle with health and personal appearance, condemn the concept at every opportunity.

The truth is, being healthy does not require the mental anguish and precision focus as is widely publicized by many “Getin-shape quick!” and “This diet will help you feel and look great!” businesses promote. The companies and individuals who promote these ideals do so only to pry open your wallet to fill their gut with lavish foods and supplements and on a far more consistent basis than most will ever be able to afford.

With age we are continually exposed

to pollutants - like EMF’S [electromagnetic frequencies], fuel, gases, UV, harmful processed food with additives and preservatives, and day-to-day nuisances like work, school, or the pain in the backside that doesn’t know how to drive properly, or the irritating person in-line at the grocery store checkout, who gabs away endlessly giving the impression that the entire world revolves around them. Our bodies, hormones, and general health are weakened because of it. The solution is to ensure we have the right amount of nutrients, vitamins, rest, and exercise - in perfect balance. However, life has become so hectic, foods so contaminated, and or expensive, that it is virtually impossible to do so. If only there was one source that could help put our bodies

back together again, and one that accepts our health insurance.

DESERT LONGEVITY INSTITUTE is ecstatic to announce that they are now ACCEPTING INSURANCE INCLUDING MEDICARE. Yes!

For the first time since their inception in the late 1990’s, the El Paseo based innovator of anti-aging and rejuvenation for the Coachella Valley is accepting insurances including MEDICARE.

Desert Longevity Institute goes beyond every conventional lab and routine blood testing that anyone would ever receive while caring for their health with a general practitioner. This permits Desert Longevity Institute to get to the root of medical concerns without playing guessing games.

Whether you are suffering from low-libido,

depression, insomnia, pain, weight-loss or weight-gain woes, can’t become pregnant or more … Desert Longevity Institute will refill your cup of health - and now with a cube of insurance.

MAKING FRIENDS WITH YOUR HIGHER SELF

“Our Higher Wisdom, interchangeably referred to as our Higher Self, is the allknowing part of us that surrounds and manages the parts of our energy field that we are either not aware of, or only partially aware of.”

You are so much more than just the body you live in. Your energy field, which has a measurable frequency to it, extends far beyond the flesh and blood you can see. The field surrounding you is an energy structure that receives and transmits communications to and from the physical parts of you. Your energy field also serves as a radio station for communications that come to you from the higher, unembodied part of you, your Higher Self and inner spirit.

Whether you are aware of communications sent from your Higher Self or not, you are constantly receiving transmissions to your energy field. The communications are likely not coming through a voice whispering in your ear but rather as subtle thoughts, feelings, daydreams, or inner knowing that you cannot explain. You are receiving streaming guidance from you every minute of every day.

You are connected with your Higher Self at your core. This relationship has always existed between you and the higher part of you, and you have never been disconnected, but if you have not been aware of the connection, it may be of benefit to you to bring some consciousness to this sacred relationship as you ready yourself for life in the new paradigm.

Keeping in mind that your Higher Self is a higher aspect of you and that this aspect of you is a veritable library of infinite knowledge, forging a conscious two-way relationship with this part of yourself grants you unlimited access to cosmic wisdom that has previously existed beyond your ability to reach it. The return on an investment in this relationship will not disappoint!

A simple way to elevate your awareness of this connection with your Higher Wisdom is to set a few minutes aside each day for quiet meditation. Invite your Higher Self to join you and to secure a pathway of communication with your conscious mind.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): According to a study by Newsweek magazine, 58 percent of us yearn to experience spiritual growth; 33 percent report having had a mystical or spiritual experience; 20 percent of us say we have had a revelation from God in the last year; and 13 percent have been in the presence of an angel. Given the astrological omens currently in play for you Aries, I suspect you will exceed all those percentages in the coming weeks. I hope you will make excellent use of your sacred encounters. What two areas of your life could most benefit from a dose of divine assistance or intervention? There’s never been a better time than now to seek a Deus ex machina. (More info: https:// tinyurl.com/GodIntercession)

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): After the fall of the Roman Empire, political cohesion in its old territories was scarce for hundreds of years. Then a leader named Charlemagne (747–814) came along and united much of what we now call Western Europe. He was unusual in many respects. For example, he sought to master the arts of reading and writing. Most other rulers of his time regarded those as paltry skills that were beneath their dignity. I mention this fact, Taurus, because I suspect it’s a propitious time to consider learning things you have previously regarded as unnecessary or irrelevant or outside your purview. What might these abilities be?

Ask questions of your Higher Self and let this all-knowing part of you how you would like to receive answers. Are thoughts, feelings, or sounds easiest for you to identify as communications? Set your intent to become more consciously attuned to the communications you are receiving and know that every effort you put forth to make friends with your Higher Self is an important gift you are giving yourself.

In my pursuit to help you connect with your Higher Self, I invite you to join my Telegram group DIVINE PURPOSE Discussions. Go to https://t. me/+8XQ9bgCiF0A2YzIx and enjoy the light of this supportive community.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): I’m turning this horoscope over to Nigerian poet Ijeoma Umebinyuo. She has three messages that are just what you need to hear right now. 1. “Start now. Start where you are. Start with fear. Start with pain. Start with doubt. Start with hands shaking. Start with voice trembling but start. Start and don’t stop. Start where you are, with what you have.” 2. “You must let the pain visit. You must allow it to teach you. But you must not allow it to overstay.” 3. “Write a poem for your 14-year-old self. Forgive her. Heal her. Free her.”

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Historical records tell us that Chinese Emperor Hungwu (1328–1398) periodically dealt with overwhelming amounts of decision-making. During one ten-day phase of his reign, for example, he was called on to approve 1,660 documents concerning 3,391 separate issues. Based on my interpretation of the planetary omens, I suspect you may soon be called on to deal with a similar outpouring. This might tempt you toward over-stressed reactions like irritation and self-medication. But I hope you’ll strive to handle it all with dignity and grace. In fact, that’s what I predict you will do. In my estimation, you will be able to summon the extra poise and patience to manage the intensity.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Is it even possible for us humans to live without fear—if even for short grace periods? Could you or I or anyone else somehow manage to celebrate, say, 72 hours of freedom from all worries and anxieties and trepidations? I suspect the answer is no. We may aspire to declare our independence from dread, but 200,000 years of evolution ensures that our brains are hard-wired to be ever-alert for danger. Having provided that perspective, however, I will speculate that if anyone could approach a state of utter dauntlessness, it will be you Leos in the next three weeks. This may be as close as you will ever come to an extended phase of bold, plucky audacity.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “Dear Sunny Bright Cheery Upbeat Astrologer: You give us too many sunny, bright, cheery, upbeat predictions. They lift my mood when I first read them, but later I’m like, “What the hell?” Because yeah, they come true, but they usually cause some complications I didn’t foresee. Maybe you should try offering predictions that bum me out, since then I won’t have to deal with making such big adjustments.

—Virgo Who is Weary of Rosy Hopeful Chirpy Horoscopes.” Dear Virgo: You have alluded to a key truth about reality: Good changes often require as much modification and adaptation as challenging changes. Another truth: One of my specialties is helping my readers manage those good changes. And by the way: I predict the next two weeks will deliver a wealth of interesting and buoyant changes.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Poet Pablo Neruda wrote, “Let us look for secret things somewhere in the world on the blue shores of silence.” That might serve as a good motto for you in the coming weeks. By my astrological reckoning, you’ll be wise to go in quest for what’s secret, concealed, and buried. You will generate fortuitous karma by smoking out hidden agendas and investigating the rest of the story beneath the apparent story. Be politely pushy, Libra. Charmingly but aggressively find the missing information and the shrouded rationales. Dig as deep as you need to go to explore the truth’s roots.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): We’ve all done things that make perfect sense to us, though they might look nonsensical or inexplicable to an outside observer. Keep this fact in your awareness during the next two weeks, Scorpio. Just as you wouldn’t want to be judged by uninformed people who don’t know the context of your actions, you should extend this same courtesy to others, especially now. At least some of what may appear nonsensical or inexplicable will be serving a valuable purpose. Be slow to judge. Be inclined to offer the benefit of the doubt.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): I completely understand if you feel some outrage about the lack of passion and excellence you see in the world around you. You have a right to be impatient with the laziness and carelessness of others. But I hope you will find ways to express your disapproval constructively. The best approach will be to keep criticism to a minimum and instead focus on generating improvements. For the sake of your mental health, I suggest you transmute your anger into creativity. You now have an enhanced power to reshape the environments and situations you are part of so they work better for everyone.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In the 17th century, renowned Capricorn church leader James Ussher announced he had discovered when the world had been created. It was at 6 pm on October 22 in the year 4004 BCE. From this spectacularly wrong extrapolation, we might conclude that not all Capricorns are paragons of logic and sound analysis 100 percent of the time. I say we regard this as a liberating thought for you in the coming weeks. According to my analysis, it will be a favorable time to indulge in wild dreams, outlandish fantasies, and imaginative speculations. Have fun, dear Capricorn, as you wander out in the places that singer Tom Petty referred to as “The Great Wide Open.”

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): We often evaluate prospects quantitatively: how big a portion do we get, how much does something cost, how many social media friends can we add? Quantity does matter in some cases, but on other occasions may be trumped by quality. A few close, trustworthy friends may matter more than hundreds of Instagram friends we barely know. A potential house may be spacious and affordable, but be in a location we wouldn’t enjoy living in. Your project in the coming weeks, Aquarius, is to examine areas of your life that you evaluate quantitatively and determine whether there are qualitative aspects neglected in your calculations.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “Dear Dr. Astrology: Help! I want to know which way to go. Should I do the good thing or the right thing? Should I be kind and sympathetic at the risk of ignoring my selfish needs? Or should I be a pushy stickler for what’s fair and true, even if I look like a preachy grouch? Why is it so arduous to have integrity? —Pinched Pisces.” Dear Pisces: Can you figure out how to be half-good and halfright? Half-self-interested and half-generous? I suspect that will generate the most gracious, constructive results.

HOW TO DEAL WITH MUSCLE IMBALANCES?

With almost a decade of experience working as a personal trainer and now managing a team of personal trainers, muscle imbalances are a familiar topic to me.

Simply put, muscular imbalance is seen when the muscles that surround a joint provide different values of tension, sometimes weaker or tighter than normal, thus limiting the joint movement.

To summarize, muscle imbalances occur when one muscle is stronger than its opposing muscle. – Dailyburn

Chances are that you’ve always known that one side of your body is stronger than the other. You always use the same arm to lift heavy objects, and the same leg to start climbing a flight of stairs. You consistently and unconsciously choose the stronger limb to get things done, because your brain knows that it would be more efficient than your weaker side. There are several reasons why one side of our body is usually stronger than the other. These can be natural (determined by your genes) or acquired due to habits or life events that contribute to muscle imbalance. Here are some reasons why one side of your body is stronger than the other:

• Your genetics: 90% of the people reading this are right handed- That’s RIGHT, only 10% of the population are left-handed. Most of us have one dominant foot and arm, and in the majority of cases, it’s the right side. Handedness and footedness refer to which side of our body is dominant. You can move your dominant limb more easily and with higher precision to accomplish fine tasks. This means that you’ll be more likely to use your

dominant arm and leg, which will make them stronger and bigger than the other side. This is determined by our genes which determine our brain’s anatomy.

• Injury: If you’ve had an accident and had to immobilize one leg or one hand, you might develop muscle wasting on the injured side. Muscle wasting is when your muscles become atrophied (smaller and weaker) due to underuse. This happens when you fracture a limb and have to wear a cast for a few weeks. During this period, the muscles on your opposite side will become larger and stronger (hypertrophy), which causes muscle imbalance.

• Your job: People who have manual jobs tend to have more muscle imbalance between sides. For example, if you’re a construction worker, you probably use your dominant hand to complete intense manual tasks all day. This usually means that one arm will be much stronger and bigger than the other.

• Your sleep position: If you always tend to sleep on the same side, there’s a good chance that side will atrophy and become weaker.

• Lifestyle habits: Other life habits like always holding the grocery bags using the same hand, or always crossing your legs in the same position will make one side of your body stronger than the other

HOW TO CORRECT YOUR MUSCLE IMBALANCES?

Here’s what you can do on your own:

• Sleep on one side at the beginning of the night and then turn over in the middle of the night

• When carrying groceries, try to use the side you don’t typically use to hold them. Consider packing lighter bags and distributing the weight evenly between both sides.

• Hold your phone at eye level and pay attention to your posture. Better yet, give your phone a break!

• Shift your weight from side to side when standing.

A knowledgeable trainer can help you identify your muscle imbalances and create a specific training program to correct the muscle imbalances in your body.

First thing Personal Trainer will assess your current Body Mechanix and after the assessments have been performed, a corrective exercise program can be developed. Corrective exercise is defined as “the systematic process of identifying a neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction, developing a plan of action, and implementing an integrated corrective strategy”.

Try to work with your personal trainer to figure out what comes next at each stage of your training, and focus on whether any muscles are bigger, or stronger than their counterparts. Usually, the most effective way to fight back against asymmetric muscles is by making sure that your dominant side doesn’t end up with more exercise volume than your weaker one, and adding extra intensity to your muscle groups.

Overcoming imbalances is all about training lagging muscle groups more intensely than you have done in the past. You can do this by increasing your weekly volume, pushing harder for progressive overload, and working with heavier weights

The more you focus on avoiding muscle imbalance, the less likely it is that you’ll need to adjust for specialization workouts in the future.

If you have muscular imbalances, you can correct them with focused training. More importantly, consider working with a personal trainer or a training specialist from “Send Me A Trainer”. We can help you in identifying and correcting any imbalances you may have.

The California legislators have two current bills related to the use of psychedelics:

SB-58 Controlled substances: Decriminalization of certain hallucinogenic substances. The purpose of this bill is to make lawful the possession of specified quantities of psilocybin, psilocyn, dimethyltryptamine (DMT), ibogaine, and mescaline, for personal use.

AB-941 Controlled substances: Psychedelic-assisted therapy for combat veterans. This bill, the “End Veteran Suicide Act,” would authorize a licensed professional clinical counselor to administer controlled substances to combat veterans, as specified. This bill is for professional use.

Statistics on Chronic Pain in the US

The CDC estimates 20.4% (50.0 million) of U.S. adults had chronic pain and 8.0% of U.S. adults (19.6 million) had high-impact chronic pain, with higher prevalence of both chronic pain and high-impact chronic pain reported among women, older adults, previously but not currently employed adults, adults living in poverty.

Long term use of opiates for chronic pain can lead to addictive behaviors, especially when professional dosing and supply are nonexistent. How many patients with legitimate pain become pseudoaddicted by medical professionals when they do not receive a prescription for proper pain medications or when the prescribed dosage of these medications is too low to manage their pain?

Approximately 1.7 million people live with limb loss each year in the United States, and the vast majority experience phantom-limb sensations beginning in the days and weeks after amputation. Neuroplasticity appears to play a central role in the published case study of a 35-year-old man whose intractable phantom-limb pain resulting from an amputated leg suddenly all but disappeared. The treatment? Three doses of psilocybin paired with mirror visual feedback. pubmed. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29764303

Twenty percent of people who experience a traumatic event will develop PTSD. About 8 million people have PTSD in a given year. 1 in 13 people will develop PTSD at some point in their life. nimh.nih.gov/health/statistics/ post-traumatic-stress-disorder-ptsd

Several studies over the past 50 years have shown potential analgesic benefit in cancer pain, phantom limb pain, cluster headache, PTSD, addiction, and alcoholism.

Botanical Herbs for Treating Pain Syndromes

The use of natural herbs to treat chronic pain has become universally accepted and even recommended when pharmaceuticals are ineffective or are not available. Our brain gets in these firing patterns that are maladaptive and pathologic, and by using psychedelics as a reset button, it resets the brain’s ability to fire in a more healthy and efficient way. The longer patients are in these pathologic states, the firmer those neural pathways are set.

Many scientific studies written in CV Weekly Cannabis Columns, have shown mammals make anandamide (THC) and 2-AG (CBD). An endogenous psychedelic, Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is now known to be produced in small quantities from the pineal gland of the brain. Since 1961, studies have shown endogenous DMT could underlie mental illness. In 2001 Rick Strassman’s

landmark book DMT: The Spirit Molecule was published. DMT was still a niche subject in a niche field. An early and now widely cited study out of Europe on the subjective effects of the psychedelic brew ayahuasca, which contains DMT produce positive results.

The FDA has already given universities access to research psychedelics. Massachusetts General Hospital through the Center for Neuroscience of Psychedelics and UC San Diego through Psychedelics and Health Research Initiative are producing positive results for the use of psychedelics for depression, alcohol addiction, near death anxiety, agitation, PTSD, and chronic nerve pain unrelieved by current pharmaceuticals.

The question remains is it the role of the legislators to dictate and legalize a potentially life-altering new option for millions who suffer from all of these debilitating conditions? Or is it the role of the FDA to legalize these psychedelics and cannabis and let the medical physicians choose among the many drugs prohibited in Schedule I?
