ilm has been a consistent source of entertainment that helped many get through the COVID-19 pandemic while being cooped up inside. Even in the midst of coronavirus, new films were being made, one of which being Take Back, directed by Christian Sesma and produced by Mike Hatton, right here in the Coachella Valley. The film has an all-star cast and is a an action revenge thriller released with Mike Hatton’s production shingle, Ton of Hats, Inc. in partnership with 101 Films International. In Take Back, the plot follows Zara (Gillian White) and Brian (Michael Jai White) who are living a seemingly perfect life when a mysterious man (Mickey Rourke) from Zara's past kidnaps their teenage daughter. With the help of a small-town sheriff (Russo), the couple races to save their daughter before she's sold and vanishes into the sex trade. While Sesma and Hatton have shot films around the world, the Coachella Valley has been featured in several of his movies. Take Back was shot all in the Coachella Valley, with Coachella and Thermal being principal locations of the film. Take Back holds the prestigious distinction of being the first film that was greenlit during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We shot the movie during the height of the pandemic last summer. It was just us and another Michael Bay movie that was allowed to shoot, so we were among the first in the country to be shooting a film during COVID, dealing with the new safety protocols and transitions that film crews needed to adhere to,” stated Hatton. Strict COVOD-19 guidelines were set forth by city, county, and state regulations, the industry’s white sheet, The Safe Way Forward, as guidance, SAGAFTRA’s requirements, and the production’s own mandatory “COVID Playbook,” created by Hatton and Sesma. The cast and crew, a total of 40 people including 10 cast, took all the precautions, including frequent testing throughout preproduction and production, the mandatory wearing of masks, quarantine of remote crew in the same hotel and at home for locals, having professional makeup artists apply the cast’s own makeup each day, and having cast members laundering their own wardrobe.

Sesma and Hatton didn’t stop there, as they also shot another film a few months later in November with Richard Dreyfuss called Every Last One of Them, scheduled to be released early fall. “It was crazy shooting two films during the pandemic. We didn’t know much about COVID at the time. We shot in July, but we were in pre-production in June, so 101 Films really took a risk on myself and my producing partner, Mike Hatton. He was integral to putting this film together and getting us off the ground. It was a brutal shoot wearing gloves and protective equipment in 120-degree weather, but we pulled it off with the help of the community,” said Sesma. “I remember filming at Lake Cahuilla in the triple-degree heat and no one was complaining. Everyone was just grateful to be at work. We were glad to be doing what we love during the pandemic after months of being quarantined,” added Hatton. The Take Back shoot lasted for three weeks. The content of the film’s theme and inclusion of underrepresented minorities falls in line with the films that Sesma always wanted to make. “As a Latino director, I’m always trying to push representation and Gillian and Michael really made this film their own. It was really

great to have the opportunity to make that kind of movie. This has a really kickass female lead, and you can’t have a more female-empowered film,” expressed Sesma. Sesma is looking forward to sharing the familiar desertscapes of the Coachella Valley in the midst of an action thriller with his audiences, highlighting the East Valley in a new way. There will be an invite-only red carpet premiere on June 17 at the Mary Pickford Theater. There will also be an after-party hosted by Agua Caliente Cathedral City Casino, which will be open to the public to come celebrate and support the film that the crew shot for them, and with them. “I always think that overcoming challenges and successfully executing a movie with your team who you worked with over and over again is really a dream job. Hatton and I make movies with some of our best friends, an amazing core group of crew and cast members, in my hometown and that’s a huge blessing,” stated Sesma.

COLLEGE OF THE DESERT’S 57TH ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT CELEBRATES STUDENT SUCCESS

T

he extraordinary accomplishments of College of the Desert’s Class of 2021 will be celebrated with a virtual commencement ceremony that will be available for viewing starting on Friday, May 28 at 10 a.m. on the College’s website. More than 1,600 associate degrees and almost 300 certificates will be presented, recognizing students’ achievements and their commitment to education while persevering through a global pandemic. Despite obstacles, the graduates continued to succeed while adjusting their work and personal schedules and embracing new ways of learning. “Many of us have endured hardships since the pandemic started, and we are especially proud of the Class of 2021 for facing the challenges of the past year, and overcoming barriers to meet their academic goals,” said Interim Superintendent/President Jeff Baker. “We are now navigating a new world

and these graduates will be paving the way forward.” Among the graduating class are those receiving certificates of completion in a specialized area of study through the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, in which students gain skills that make them immediately marketable in the workforce. The CTE program integrates rigorous academic work and courses taught by professionals who are experts in their fields. This year also marks the third year of graduates of the plEDGE program, which provides two years of free tuition to local high school graduates of the Coachella Valley. More than 4,000 students have been helped by the donor-supported plEDGE program since it began in 2017. The program is coupled with EDGE, an innovative college student support program that includes a two-week review of math and

English and wraparound services designed to support student success. “The College is always looking for ways to expand access to higher education and specialized training regardless of financial constraints or socioeconomic backgrounds. As we forge a path forward during these tumultuous times, we will provide innovative programs to keep students enrolled and thriving for a brighter tomorrow,” added Baker. “For this graduating class we applaud their exceptional commitment and are proud of their dedication and achievements.” The virtual commencement event will

or many movie buffs, the home theater has become increasingly bigger (screen wise) and better. Great sound and large ultra sharp 4K images are becoming the norm as we wean ourselves away from the big theatrical screen. Many movies buffs have re-discovered the joy of finding older and new films on disc to supplement the plethora of movies available on various streaming platforms. That said, there’s still something to be said for actually owning a physical disc of a great movie you can pop in and enjoy any time. Kinda like readily referencing a beloved book. The most loved stories, whether movie or book, have a timelessness that reminds us what it mans to be human. Here are three soon- to-be released theatrical films that probably can be best enjoyed on a large theater screen, although they will eventually – sooner than later – be available to purchase as a disc or stream on your favorite platform. JUNGLE CRUISE (In Theaters July 30) It’s hard not to think of John Huston’s

“The African Queen” when seeing the various posters for this movie and watching the terrific trailer for this, yet another film based on, or at least inspired, by a beloved old-school (original) Disneyland ride. Take this fun thrill ride down the treacherous Amazon with wisecracking, “happy-go-lucky skipper” Frank Wolff (Dwayne Johnson) and Researcher Dr. Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt). Lily has traveled from London to explore the Amazon jungle and hires Frank’s dubious services as a guide to take her downriver in his ramshackle boat. Lily is hoping to locate an ancient tree with mythical but extraordinary healing powers that could change the future of medicine. This epic quest brings together two unlikely people who encounter numerous dangers and inexplicable (supernatural?) forces embedded in the lush, deceptive beauty of the rainforest. As the secrets of the lost tree are revealed, the stakes for Lily and Frank are raised as their fate – and mankind’s – hangs in the balance. Director John Collet Serra’s film fully

delivers the promise of the poster and the premise of the trailer, and that’s a rare thing. Johnson and Blunt are a terrific team and perfectly cast. See this one on a rally big screen (at home or in a theater). BLACK WIDOW (In theaters and on Disney+ July 9) Marvel Studios is making its return the big theater screen with the long and muchanticipated Scarlet Johansson superspy Natasha Romanoff’s back-story, already suggested during her many appearances in previous “Iron Man” and “Avenger” movies. In her latest, she must deal with some of the disturbing and dark facets of her past. The movie introduces Natasha’s preAvengers “family” including Yelena (Florence Pugh) and the Red Guardian (David Harbour). THE GREEN KNIGHT (In theaters July 30) Writer/director David Lowery is a visionary filmmaker. His imaginative and stunningly adapted film based on the Arthurian legend that recounts the tale of Sir Gawain (played by Dev Patel), Arthur’s reckless nephew who sets of on a dangerous quest to confront the Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and a “tester of men.” Gawain encounters ghosts, giants, robbers and schemers in what eventually devolves into a much deeper journey to define his own character and prove his worth to his family and kingdom by bravely facing the ultimate

BY ROBIN E. SIMMONS challenger. This mesmerizing and bold take on a classic tale from the fabled Knights of the Round Table is worth the hassle of actually going out to the theater if for no other reason than to share the communal and very human experience of bonding with strangers having the same emotions, fears and hopes as our projected avatars on the big screen. THE LITTLE THINGS (now available to own) Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon (Denzel Washington) is sent to Los Angeles for what should have been a quick evidence-gathering assignment. But no, instead he becomes embroiled in the search for a killer who is terrorizing the city. Leading the hunt, L.A. Sherriff Department Sergeant Jim Baxter (Rami Malek), impressed with Deke’s cop instincts, unofficially engages his help. But as they track the killer, Baxter is unaware that the investigation is dredging up echoes of Deke’s past, uncovering disturbing secrets that could threaten much more than his case! Director John Lee Hancock’s (“The Blind Side”) satisfying and twisty psychological thriller engages from fade-in to the final shot. Jared Leto co-stars. Blu-ray. Warner Bros.

THE VINO VOICE

BY RICK RIOZZA

BONTERRA’S YOUNG RED 2020!

T

he first thing that came to my mind after quaffing the lightly chilled Young Red 2020, was that Bonterra had just produced the first “true-style” California Beaujolais in recent memory! The wine world simply loves French Beaujolais, and the fact that Mendocino County’s Bonterra’s vineyard has presented a fabulous “Cal Boge” put us over the moon! But hold on there partner! When I grabbed the bottle to read the label, looking for a predominance of Gamay Noir in the mix—I saw nothing. In fact, there was no mention of any particular grape in the mix. I thought, perhaps, Bonterra was playing low-key in their description of the wine. In other words, “Relax and enjoy—no need to get into grape varietals.” And they’re right. The wine is absolutely delicious: It’s fresh and lively, has great fruit, nice complexity, silky texture—a summer stunner for all occasions! Alors! As I came to find out—it’s not California Gamay, but rather a Grenache Malbec blend with a touch of Viognier. Thus we are getting blossoming aromas of ripe raspberries, cherries, figs, and clementine oranges. On the palate, we get cherries, some black cherries, apricots, cranberries, roses, other florals, a bit of iodine with a nice backbone of acidity. As one would expect there are light tannins; and I love the tart cherry on the finish. Its light to medium bodied with a perfect 13.3% alcohol level. This is why I thought “Beajolais”—and why I’m still drinking it! Intowine.com seems to agree with me. Here is their take: “This is an unusual wine. It takes some of the Rose this winery produces and hard presses the grapes (presumably after the juice intended for the Rose is separated). Hard pressing is basically squeezing to get a bit more juice. This is typically tannic. The difference is they then add in Malbec juice to the wine. The wine is barrel fermented and then aged for a bit in stainless steel. The result is a young, lighter wine that is not too unlike a Beaujolais.” At around $15 or so, Bonterra Young Red 2020 it is the best organic wine value on the shelves. Bonterra has been a winery we enjoy reviewing. And speaking of “organic”

12

here’s the informative spiel on Bonterra. “Organically farmed and masterfully made, Bonterra Organic Vineyards wines are crafted to be perfectly in tune with nature. A celebration of the vitality derived from organic cultivation, our wines respect careful farming practices carried out on a dynamic network of estate and partner farms throughout California. Long before organic produce filled the shelves of neighborhood grocery’s, our dedicated team was committed to organic and Biodynamic farming because we passionately believe that farms teeming with biodiversity—encompassing vines, insects and wildlife, and healthy soils—yield better wines.” As with a Beaujolais, the Young Red 2020 pairs wonderfully with roasted chicken, pork sausage, hangar steak, meat loaf, and of course our favorite duck with plum sauce. Charcuterie is a classic combo to match with this wine. The wine also pairs well with fatty fish like salmon and tuna. With its high acidity, this wine can also balance creamy pasta dishes and risottos with fish or shellfish. Other seafood that works well is roasted cod, sushi, fried calamari and Cajun shrimp. And as to cheeses, look to serve the chilled Young Red 2020 with Chèvre, Neufchâtel, brie, cream cheese, Swiss, Gruyère, and Monterey Jack. Hmmmm…looks like we’ve just made ourselves hungry and thirsty all over again, Bon Appétit & Cheers!!

PET PLACE

A

fter more than 30 years of practice, Dr. Lillian Roberts DVM, still loves what she does for living - - keeping our Coachella Valley pets healthy and happy. She operates Country Club Animal Clinic in Palm Desert. Dr. Roberts explains why she loves being a veterinarian, “Whether it’s a wellness visit or a challenging medical or surgical case, I take pleasure in making every client experience a positive one. I look forward to interacting with my patients and consider many of their owners to be personal friends”. Dr. Roberts authored four books, including the Andi Pauling veterinarian mystery series. She supports numerous animal related charities, and serves on the board of directors at Loving All Animals. Dr. Roberts has the following advice to help keep your pet healthy: Q: WHEN SHOULD I TAKE MY PET TO THE VET? A: For the typical young, healthy adult pet, most vets recommend yearly wellness visits, in addition to those times when you seek care because you notice something wrong with

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com

“ASK YOUR VET” WITH LILLIAN ROBERTS, DVM

your cat or dog. This should include a thorough physical exam, discussion of findings, and a plan to address any abnormalities. Q: WHAT CONSTITUTES A THOROUGH PHYSICAL EXAM? A: The animal is weighed, temperament and heart rate taken, and a brief medical history recorded by the vet’s assistant. The doctor observes the animal from the moment they enter the room, assessing the overall body condition score, skin and coat, attitude, demeanor, and gait before the official exam begins. I like to sit down and watch the pet move about the room if appropriate, while asking the owner questions about how they perceive their pet’s health. Next, I run my hands over the animal. This soothes their anxiety and tells me about the condition of their skin and coat, presence of lumps, and if the fur is long or bushy. It tells me about their weight and condition beyond what a visual check can. Speaking calmly to the pet and the owner, I look at the eyes, the face, the nose, then I lift the lips on each side to check the teeth, gums, and other oral structures. I peek into each ear,

then gently feel the glands of the throat. I feel under the front legs, over the ribs, and then gently palpate the abdomen for signs of pain, tenderness, masses, or enlarged organs. I peer under the tail, run my hands over the limbs, before listening to the heart and lungs. If anything unusual is found, additional attention is given to that area. Q: I CAN GET MY PET’S SHOTS AT A WALK-IN CLINIC. WHY SPEND MONEY ON A VET? It’s amazing how often I find dental disease, heart murmurs, weight issues, even tumors the owner was unaware of. In most cases, pets the owners considered healthy have no urgent medical problems. But just as in humans, early detection is key. Q: HOW DO I KNOW MY PET IS SICK ENOUGH TO GO TO THE VET? WHAT IS AN EMERGENCY? Every pet is different when it comes to signs of illness. Cats often hide their symptoms. Seek vet help IMMEDIATELY in the case of difficulty in breathing, sudden collapse, bleeding anywhere that doesn’t stop within a few minutes, persistent coughing or coughing that interferes with normal activity, or a seizure that lasts for more than a few minutes. Immediate treatment should also be sought when you know your pet ingested a toxic substance, has a sudden change in the appearance of an eye, persistent gagging or retching without vomiting, sudden lameness (limping), or obvious distress even without specific symptoms. Request a same-day appointment for vomiting (not continuously) for more than a day, diarrhea lasting 3 days or more, severely decreased appetite for longer than a day, or sudden onset of restlessness or unusual vocalization. Schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience in case of head shaking, scratching, or scooting that goes on more than a short while. Other reasons for a future appointment include bad breath, pawing at the mouth, noticeable weight gain or loss, swollen abdomen, hair loss, skin lumps, change in gait, unfamiliar odor, or any unusual new behavior. HADDON LIBBY

THE BIDEN CABINET

I

doubt any of us could name everyone in the Cabinet of the Biden Administration. If we start at the front of succession line, you will fine Vice President Kamala Harris, the former U.S. Senator from California. Previously, she was California’s attorney general. Her roots go back to the City Attorney office in San Francisco and personal mentoring by San Francisco mayor and Speaker for the State Assembly, Willie Brown. HOW DO I DROP CHARGES?

Y

our spouse hit you and the police were called. Now, how do you drop domestic violence charges against someone? The way criminal charges work is that the alleged victim does not have the legal authority to drop criminal charges against anyone (or to bring criminal charges against anyone). Instead, charges are brought by a prosecutor's office, usually a district attorney. In deciding whether to bring charges against someone, the prosecutor considers whether the evidence provided to them is sufficient to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. In making their determination, they typically do consider whether the alleged victim wants to pursue the case and whether the alleged victim is willing to testify. It is fairly common in domestic violence cases that an alleged victim does not want charges to be brought against a potential defendant. However, there are ways that the prosecutor can prove their case without the victim, and even if the victim testifies that defendant didn't commit the crime. So what happens after you have been arrested on criminal charges? The arresting officer takes the police report to a sergeant at the station who then sends it to the filing deputy in the district attorney’s office. The reports are sometimes delayed in filling because paperwork has been misplaced or more info is needed. During the age of covid there are many reasons for delays. When the filing Deputy DA

16

reviews it, s/he tries to determine what crimes have been committed and whether it should be a misdemeanor or a felony. A Domestic Violence, for instance, is a wobbler and can be filed as either. Even though the police officer may have arrested you/cited you for a particular crime, the filing deputy could decide that there were more counts that should be filed and/or less counts. That is why it is often important to retain a lawyer asap so s/he can possibly contact the filing deputy and hopefully have input on how the case is to be filed. In other words, to get a second bite of the apple. However, some cases are a direct file to the court, by the arresting agency, thus bypassing the DA. If the Defendant is in custody we have bondsmen that will take you out with NO MONEY DOWN, if you qualify, and they will use a 7- 8% Bond for our client instead of the standard 10%. Bond hearings are no longer in Dept. 2K, you NOW go to the Clerk’s Office. If there is no filing of the complaint on the arraignment date, the matter is continued for 15 days. Your first appearance is called an Arraignment, for either a Misdemeanor or Felony. Misdemeanor Arraignments are in Department 2K and stay there until Trial and then go to Dept. 3M. On Misdemeanors, we can appear on behalf of our clients, pursuant to a Waiver of Personal Appearance under Penal Code Section 977. On Felonies, the defendant has to appear

Tom Vilsack is the Secretary of Agriculture. The former governor of Iowa, Vilisack served in this capacity during the Obama Administration. Gina Raimondo is the Secretary of Commerce. This Harvard grad and Oxford Rhodes Scholar has JD from Yale University. After working in venture capital, Rainmondo became Treasurer in Rhode Island before becoming the state’s first female Governor. Marty Walsh is the Secretary of Labor. Walsh was Mayor of Boston until being tapped for the new role. each and every time, and those cases are in 3N, 3S (and 3T for drug charges). On felony cases, It is often difficult to get discovery from the DA before a preliminary hearing. When we appear at the Arraignment, we are supposed to get a copy of the police report, which we forward to our client. We ask you to review it and let us know what looks correct or incorrect. Sometimes, the court Deputy DA doesn’t have a copy for us, and we have to enter a plea of not guilty, and get the report at a later date. For the court Deputy DA’s to Dispose of a case, they often have to go to a supervisor for authority to reduce or dismiss the charge. It is not easy to obtain. In 2021, the standard offer is jail time on most cases. The current District Attorney for Riverside County is Mike Hestrin. He has instructed his deputy district attorneys to not plea bargain, and to demand the defendants plead straight up to the charges with maximum sentences. Thus, the court deputies have had limited authority to negotiate. Today the DA’s maintain they will make the best offer at the Arraignment court and the offers go up from there. However because of Covid 19 the courts are backed up and who knows what will happen in the ensuing months. This is where your lawyer pays off by trying to convince the prosecutors to agree to a plea bargain or by pulling an end run and going straight to the Judge for an indicated sentence. Some prosecutors are easier on certain cases than others, and it is the luck of the draw as to which prosecutor is assigned to your case. The Indio Courts are always backed up with criminal cases and more so with Covid 19. In

the past there have been civil freezes. This means that no civil case goes to trial, as all the courts just handle criminal matters. Because the District Attorney will not readily negotiate a plea, the courts are inundated with cases going to trial. FIND YOUR PASSION FOR HEALTH…. BY SIMPLY CHANGING YOUR DIET

H

ere’s Why I am so Passionate about Keto. Before I began my own Keto journey, I owned a successful marketing and branding agency, where the demands of my business life led to my being overweight and dealing with multiple health challenges. Every day left me depleted of energy, suffering with Gerd, plantar fasciitis, migraine headaches, severe brain fog and prediabetes. (in a glamour focused business that required tireless hours, endless creativity, and spunk…of which I had none). I honestly found Keto because I was desperate to save my life. My day-to-day life had become too difficult and if I was to live out the rest of my life feeling the way I did, I couldn’t bear it another day. I haven't looked back since I found Keto over 3 years ago. At that point I thought…what have I got to lose… and it ended up being the opposite… I had so much to gain. Keto gave me my life back. Fast forward to today… I’ve lost 40 pounds; reversed prediabetes and all my health problems are gone! Keto is Easy Coach recently celebrated 2 ½ years in business. One of my top referral sources is doctors and health professionals and I’ve helped hundreds of women change their lives. I’ve seen Keto heal bodies, repair family bonds, change lives and rekindle desire! As a result, I’m confident, energetic, inspired and am now blessed to be living my passion as a full-time expert Keto coach (I still pinch myself sometimes) to serve and inspire other women to get their life and health back, find hope, and lose that last bit of stubborn weight. Are You a Woman Who Lives by Her Own Rules? - I tend to work with "women of a certain age". Women who have some life behind them. Women who believe that giving up on how they look isn’t an option. Women who know age is just a number. Women who tend to live by their own set of rules. An Interesting Example of Keto Changing Lives - Rather than here more about my story let me share with you one from a local woman and her daughter that is not only interesting but one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had so far as a keto expert. Gloria, a 50 something Financial Planner, was looking to shed a few pounds and her daughter (Sophia, 19) had gained weight while she was away at college. Her physician, Dr. Gundry, gave Sophia a stern warning that she had to do something about her weight and

health as she had become pre-diabetic. The topic of "weight" was something she refused to talk about with her parents and yet it was too important to ignore. Sophia agreed to give Keto a try after meeting me and knowing I'd be involved every step of the way to guide her, support her and be a buffer between her and her Mom. The results speak for themselves. Both Mom and daughter flourished (during the early stages of the pandemic)! A total of 75 pounds was lost between them and Sophia is no longer pre-diabetic with a clean bill of health. (And Dr. Gundry is incredibly happy as well). In talking with Sophia recently she said, “I have kept the weight off for over a year and now I actually enjoy having full body pictures taken. I can go to stores I never dreamed of going where smaller girls’ shop. I love Keto and I've even inspired some of my friends to do it with me. I can't find the words to describe how much better my life is and I have way more confidence than I ever had before.” The heartfelt part of the story is that this was a journey way beyond Keto. It opened lines of communication and enhanced their relationship. There was a healing on every level - mental, emotional, and physical. It all started as a diet but ended up quite different than anyone anticipated. I couldn’t have imagined a happier outcome. The diet became a Keto lifestyle, which ultimately turned into a family healing :) I encourage you to schedule a free consult with me. Why? One of my biggest mistakes in my journey to wellness was that I waited too long until it became necessary to do something because my health was suffering. Do it now, be pro-active and see if Keto is a fit for you so you can start enjoying the freedom, healing, and power for your wellbeing. I’ll be a source of inspiration hope, support and healing to help you make the changes you want to but feel you need some support. “Energy has no agenda separate from the programming it receives. [This understanding] allows us to fully embrace the idea that we have the ability to take control of the energy that traverses our aura by intentionally programming it to create outcomes we choose.” Gratitude + Forgiveness x (Love) = Happiness, by Aimee Mosco and Donald L. Ferguson, pg. 48 nergy is the basis for everything we create in the material and the unseen worlds. When we embrace the ability to program energy, we become the true and reigning master of our own personal world. Owning this mastery is a divine birthright but to claim it can be tricky because we are born into this world with spiritual amnesia. We are actually all programming energy all the time whether we remember that we do this or not. If you have not yet remembered that you have the ability, and bear a responsibility, to consciously and intentionally program energy to affect outcomes, then you are programming energy in a very unmanaged way. It’s time to wake up to your divine abilities if you want to be in charge of the outcomes you create. Spiritual amnesia has been purposeful. We were supposed to forget about all of the perks associated with being sacred and infinitely wise so we could find creative ways to connect with these innate gifts through experience. The experiences that reacquaint us with this remembrance serve to inspire monumental soul growth. While it would be a lot easier to just remember our innate brilliance from day one, it would take valuable opportunities to grow the soul off the table. People operate on varied time-tables

when it comes to divine remembrance. As we all step together into the new era, or the unity paradigm, we will all experience what feels like an acceleration of time in this regard. It is likely that people will awaken faster to their soul gifts because the atmospheric energies of the unity paradigm allow us to capitalize on the knowledge, wisdom and divine remembrance of others. In other words, we will be more finely attuned to the growth others are experiencing and achieve growth ourselves based on that. xxxKeeping this in mind, it may be helpful for you, in the event you are looking to further awaken to your amazing ability to work with energy, to set your intent. Consider stating the following intention: “I choose to awaken most fully to remembrance of my innate abilities that allow me to program energy with purpose.” And invite your Higher Wisdom to clear a pathway in front of you with: “I choose to connect with others who have already awakened to this remembrance so that I may also benefit from their success.” In my pursuit to help human beings connect with divine remembrance, I invite you to join Facebook group Evolve through Love hosted by Elizabeth Scarcella and me. FREEWILL ASTROLOGY

WEEK OF MAY 27

ARIES (March 21-April 19): “Open your mouth only if what you are going to say is more beautiful than silence,” declares an Arab proverb. That’s a high standard to aspire to. Even at our very best, when we’re soaring with articulate vitality, it’s hard to be more beautiful than silence for more than, say, 50 percent of the time. But here’s a nice surprise: You could exceed that benchmark during the next three weeks. You’re primed to be extra expressive and interesting. When you speak, you could be more beautiful than silence as much as 80 percent of the time. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Here’s the definition of an emotional support animal: “a companion animal that provides therapeutic benefit to a person with a mental or psychiatric disability.” I don’t mean to be flippant, but I think every one of us has at least one mental or psychiatric disability that would benefit from the company of an emotional support animal. If you were ever going to acquire such an ally, the coming weeks would be prime time to do so. I encourage you to also seek out other kinds of help and guidance and stimulation that you’d benefit from having. It’s the resource-gathering phase of your cycle. (PS: Cesar Chavez said: “You are never strong enough that you don’t need help.”) GEMINI (May 21-June 20): A blogger named Valentine Cassius reports, “A tiny old woman came into the deli where I work and ordered a ‘wonderful turkey sandwich.’ When asked what she wanted on the sandwich other than turkey, she said ‘all of your most wonderful toppings.’” Here’s my response to that: The tiny old woman’s approach usually isn’t very effective. It’s almost always preferable to be very specific in knowing what you want and asking for it. But given the current astrological omens, I’ll make an exception for you in the next three weeks. I think you should be like the tiny old woman: Ask life, fate, people, spirits, and gods to bring you all of their most wonderful toppings. CANCER (June 21-July 22): “I am tired of trying to hold things together that cannot be held,” testifies Cancerian novelist Erin Morgenstern. “Tired of trying to control what cannot be controlled.” Here’s good news for her and all Cancerians. You have cosmic permission to surrender—to no longer try to hold things together that can’t be held or try to control what can’t be controlled. Maybe in a few weeks you will have gained so much relaxed new wisdom that you’ll be inspired to make fresh attempts at holding together and controlling. But that’s not for you to worry and wonder about right now. Your assignment is to nurture your psychological and spiritual health by letting go. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Philosopher Georges Bataille wrote, “The lesson of Wuthering Heights, of Greek tragedy and, ultimately, of all religions, is that there is an instinctive tendency towards divine intoxication which the rational world of calculation cannot bear. This tendency is the opposite of Good. Good is based on common interest, which entails consideration of the future.” I’m going to dissent from Bataille’s view. I agree that we all have an instinctive longing for divine intoxication, but I believe that the rational world needs us to periodically fulfill our longing for divine intoxication. In fact, the rational world grows stale and begins to decay without these interludes. So the truth is that divine intoxication is crucial for the common good. I’m telling you this, Leo, because I think the coming weeks will be a favorable time for you to claim a healthy dose of divine intoxication. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Virgo actor Ingrid Bergman (1915–1982) won the most prestigious awards possible for her work in films, TV, and theater: Oscars, Emmys, and a Tony. She was intelligent, talented, and beautiful. Life was a challenge when she was growing up, though. She testified, “I was the shyest human ever invented, but I had a lion inside me that wouldn’t shut up.” If you have a sleeping lion inside you, Virgo, I expect it to wake up soon. And if your inner lion is already wide awake and you have a decent relationship with it, I suspect it may soon begin to come into its fuller glory.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Libran author Antonio Tabucchi described the frame of mind I recommend for you in the coming days. I hope you’ll be eager to embrace his far-reaching empathy. Like him, I trust you will expand your capacity to regard the whole world as your home. Here’s Tabucchi’s declaration: “Like a blazing comet, I’ve traversed infinite nights, interstellar spaces of the imagination, voluptuousness and fear. I’ve been a man, a woman, an old person, a little girl, I’ve been the crowds on the grand boulevards of the capital cities of the West, I’ve been the serene Buddha of the East. I’ve been the sun and the moon.” SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Author James Frey writes, “I used to think I was tough, but then I realized I wasn’t. I was fragile and I wore thick armor. And I hurt people so they couldn’t hurt me. And I thought that was what being tough was, but it isn’t.” I agree with Frey. The behavior he describes has nothing to do with being tough. So what does? That’s important for you to think about, because the coming weeks will be an excellent time to be tough in the best senses of the word. Here are my definitions: Being tough means never letting people disrespect you or abuse you, even as you cultivate empathy for how wounded everyone is. Being tough means loving yourself with such unconditional grace that you never act unkind out of a neurotic need to over-defend yourself. Being tough means being a compassionate truth-teller. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Fragile intensity or intense fragility? Ferocious gentleness or gentle ferocity? Vulnerable strength or strong vulnerability? I suspect these will be some of the paradoxical themes with which you’ll be delicately wrestling in the coming days. Other possibilities: sensitive audacity or audacious sensitivity; fluidic fire or fiery fluidity; crazy wisdom or wise craziness; penetrating softness or soft penetration; shaky poise or poised shakiness. My advice is to regard rich complexities like these as blessings, not confusions or inconveniences. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Birds that live in cities have come up with an ingenious adaptation. They use humans’ abandoned cigarette butts to build their nests. Somehow they discovered that nicotine is an insectide that dispels pests like fleas, lice, and mites. Given your current astrological aspects, I’m guessing you could make metaphorically comparable adjustments in your own life. Are there ways you could use scraps and discards to your benefit? AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): A blogger named Raven testifies, “My heart is a toddler throwing a tantrum in a store and my brain is the parent who continues to shop.” I’m pleased to inform you, Aquarius, that your heart will NOT act like that toddler in the coming weeks. In fact, I believe your heart will be like a sage elder with growing wisdom in the arts intimacy and tenderness. In my vision of your life, your heart will guide you better than maybe it ever has. Now here’s a message to your brain: Listen to your heart! PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): The Voyager 1 space probe, launched by NASA in 1977, is now more than 14 billion miles from Earth. In contrast, the farthest humans have ever penetrated into the ground is 7.62 miles. It’s the Kola Superdeep Borehole in northwest Russia. Metaphorically speaking, these facts provide an evocative metaphor for the following truth: Most humans feel more confident and expansive about exploring the outer world than their inner realms. But I hope that in the coming weeks you will buck that trend, as you break all previous records for curious and luxurious exploration into your deepest psychic depths. Homework. SAFETY TIPS

T

his Memorial Day Weekend will be the biggest weekend in over a year with less Covid 19 restrictions. With great weather in the forecast, many people will be hitting the trails, parks, lakes, barbeques, golfing and of course our highways and roadways will have lots of traffic. “Situational Awareness” and exercising good common sense will be key in making this weekend a Memorable Memorial Weekend! Below are some tips and reminders to keep everyone safe. Share them with your family and friends! Travel Safety Buckle up, slow down, do not drive impaired.

Be well rested, alert and patient; give your full attention to the road. Do not text and drive. Let someone know your destination, your route, and when you expect to arrive. Water Safety Paddle board? Jet Ski? Surfing? It is all harmless fun, right? Fun, certainly. But think before you play. Whatever the activity, observe these three cardinal rules. Wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Know local weather conditions. Make sure the water and weather conditions are safe. Let others know when you hit the water and when you plan to return. Swimming pools. Learn to swim. Do not swim alone or leave children unattended.

Let someone know where and what time you are leaving and intend on returning. Barbecue Safety This fun seasonal ritual has a flip side, though — namely, an onset of injuries and home fires due to careless cooking practices. Here are some tips you can follow to stay safe while enjoying those tasty treats at your cookout. Never grill indoors or unattended – not in your house, camper, tent, or any enclosed area. Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, the deck, tree branches, or anything that could catch fire.

Hot grease or ashes could spill from the grill onto the wooden deck or into dry leaves or grass. Hiking Safety Watch out for rattle snakes. Let others know your destination and time of departing and returning. Bring fluids (water) and stay hydrated. Wear appropriate clothing. Wear sunscreen. The most important thing is practice common sense and “situational awareness” at all times!
