DIRECTOR CHRISTIAN SESMA COMES HOME TO SCREEN VIGILANTE DIARIES

S

ound the horns! Call in the jesters… the sons of Gandor have returned! You will be hard pressed to find anyone as proud to call the Coachella Valley home as award winning Hollywood director, Christian Sesma. The Valley native returns to share another film from his rapidly growing library of action cinema. The screening will be free and open to the public on a first come first serve basis and will include a starstudded red carpet. FILMWEALTH.COM and several local businesses have come together to present the special event and screening of Vigilante Diaries at Mary Pickford Theatre in Cathedral City on June 18th. Christian Sesma and former desert TV personality and actor/producer Mike Hatton will be in attendance as well as appearances by stars Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (UFC, The A-Team), Michael Jai White (Spawn, Black Dynamite), Chavo Gurrerro (WWE legend), Paul Sloan (I am Wrath), and more. “I like to make it a habit to bring back the films I make to the Coachella Valley to say ‘thank you’ to the community that helped support me for all these years,” says Sesma. The screening will take place a couple days prior to the Palm Springs International Short Fest, the one that gave Christian the first taste of screening his work before an audience. “It always feels great to share my work with my friends and family here,” he adds. In addition to Vigilante Diaries, Sesma also has two more films set for release later this year. “I’ve been working hard! I have a film I did with SyFy/ Starz coming out soon and another one that I can’t say much about but that one is with Universal,” the sense of accomplishment echoes in his voice. With such a demanding schedule, Sesma has turned to CrossFit to meet the grueling demands of production. “The days are long and require a lot of stamina. Rampage and White are pretty serious athletes, you know, so it’s like keep up with the Kardashians!” This event will allow the community to see the film just before the film goes into wide release. ‘Vigilante Diaries,’ is set to be unveiled on June 18th at 7:30pm at the Mary Pickford

Theatre in Cathedral City in a one night only event hosted by the film’s director, Christian Sesma and the film’s producer and co-star, Mike Hatton. “It’s a first come first serve event but it is free to the public and portion of the concessions will be donated to Variety Children's Club of the Desert,” beams Mr. Sesma, a believer in philanthropy. The screening will take place one week before the international release of the film. Anchor Bay Entertainment (a Starz Company) has announced it will distribute the highly anticipated action comedy this summer in select theaters and on iTunes on June 24, before expanding to On Demand, Blu-ray and DVD on July 5. Sesma, a life-long valley resident and Hollywood filmmaker frequently screens his films locally as a way to give back to those who supported and encouraged him when he was first starting out. “This is the same theatre I see movies in with my friends and family, so it's only fitting that I show them my latest film as a ‘thank you’ for their continued support,” he says. In 2014, Sesma was presented with the Hillery Vision Award by AMFM FEST, in recognition of an individual with a vision for a future yet to be built and the entrepreneurial spirit and drive to achieve great heights. There is no doubt; Christian Sesma is still climbing while remaining grounded in his roots. Hatton, a former reporter for CBS 2's Eye on the Desert, met Sesma on an audition for Christian's first Palm Springs based feature, “6:30.” The pair have collaborated on 7 feature films together and have several more in the works. Hatton added, “The desert is where Christian and I started working together. Now that we both work in Los Angeles, it feels good to bring our biggest project right back where it all began.” Aside from their local ties, several scenes in the film were shot in the Coachella Valley and the film featured several local talent, including local actress Mara Fimbres and KMIR-TV's Gino LaMonte, Thalia Hayden, and David Reese. After the screening, attendees will have a chance to speak with the cast and filmmakers at a Q&A moderated by KMIR-TV’s Dan Ball as

well as attend an after party with the cast at a location to be disclosed at the screening. Based on the popular web series on Chill. com, ‘Vigilante Diaries’ was co-written by Paul Sloan (who also stars in the film) and Sesma. Besides Sloan, who portrays the eponymous character, the action comedy features an all-star ensemble cast that includes Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Michael Jai White, Jason Mewes (Clerks, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back) and Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill). ‘Vigilante Diaries’ revolves around a team of black-ops agents turned crimefighters, led by an elusive, brooding anti-hero of near-mythical physical and weapons skills, known only as The Vigilante. Abandoned by governments, corporations and his handlers and with a bounty on his head, The Vigilante’s jam-packed missions of rescue and revenge take the audience from the mega-mansions and underbelly of Los Angeles to far-flung locales including Iraq, Armenia, Russia, and the UK. The action film introduces a cast of colorful, dangerous and hilarious characters who all have to carry out a mission. Mewes plays Beverly Hills documentary filmmaker Michael Hanover, who records the exploits of The Vigilante and is thrust headfirst into the middle of the story he is documenting— becoming a high-value target himself in the process. Mix in a trio of Asian femme fatales, a cadre of ruthless Armenian mobsters and at the top, a pair of deep cover super-spies hellbent on throwing the world into chaos, it’s no wonder it’s up to The Vigilante to sort them all out. ‘Vigilante Diaries’ is an Oscar Gold Productions, Seskri Produktionz and Ton of Hats Production, in association with Vallelonga Productions. The film was produced by Mike Hatton, Asko Akopyan, Nick Vallelonga, and Joshua Mandel. continue to page 5

VIGILANTE DIARIES continued from page 3

Red carpet arrivals for the film screening will commence at 6:45pm. Sesma on the film: “Much like the movie’s title character, Vigilante Diaries was the project that would never die. It began back in 2013 when Paul Sloan, the creator and co-writer, and I were in between projects figuring out how to pass the time. We came up with a crazy web series inspired by graphic novels we loved that we could make with our friends. A hard as nails, ultra violent action comedy that would follow a YouTube video maker (Jason Mewes) who follows this street superhero known as The Vigilante (Paul Sloan) on his bloody exploits to exact justice. Few months later cut to Chill.com putting up the money for two episodes and debuting this nutty web series with Jason Mewes at San Diego Comic Con in 2013. It got some attention. People seemed to like it. It was on YouTube’s Machinima channel for a bit and that was that. Paul Sloan and I went on to make a few more feature films and a year later, at the premiere of one of them my good

friend and Producer, Mike Hatton approached us with Exec Producer Asko Akopyan about putting together another action indie film. Hatton came up with the idea of utilizing the already produced 20 minutes of the original Vigilante Diaries web series and shooting another hour to make a full length feature film. And in early 2015 we finished that movie. This time “bigger and badder” with new cast members Quinton Rampage Jackson, Michael Madsen, Chavo Guerrero and James Russo, not to mention the returning original cast with Jason Mewes, Paul Sloan, Jacqueline Lord and Jessica Uberuaga. After screening that movie for a slew of execs the excitement grew. And there was a suggestion to make an immediate sequel after the positive response so as to sell it as a 2-film package. Thus spawning Vigilante Diaries 2.0. Exec Producer Asko Akopyan was adamant we travel to Yerevan, Armenia where his countrymen would lay out the red carpet for an American production and we go make an international action movie sequel. And we did. Add London and Scotland into

June 9 to June 15, 2016

the mix and we now had another amazing action film. Once into post-production I realized that there was a rare opportunity here. I asked the question. What if we were to take both films, combine them and make what I believe to be the biggest action indie film I’ve ever seen- a literal mini-Mission Impossible or Fast and Furious type movie. So now, in it’s third trimester, if you will, Exec Producer Paul Hertzberg and Cinetel Films came in and had us shoot a new action opening and ending to tie all this footage together, adding Michael Jai White as the final key cast member. Thus the penultimate and final version of Vigilante Diaries came to be. The project that had a life of its own. A will to be made. Every time we thought each shoot was done and over with, something else came along to give it new life. Paul Sloan and I worked very hard on the story to make this patched together narrative work seamlessly. And fortunately it organically worked with the original concept of the web series. A segmented, or “diary” entry style film where we follow a series of adventures that coalesce

to form one over arcing massive story. So the project that was just meant to be a web series for fun with friends became one of the most amazing journeys across the globe creating the kind of international action films that inspired me to become a filmmaker in the first place. Vigilante Diaries is my “Kill Bill meets Mission Impossible,” very much in the vein of the 90’s Michael Bay and Bruckheimer films that defined the current mainstream action blockbuster today. And so, just as the saying goes, the story of making a movie is many times just as entertaining as the movie itself.” Trailers can be viewed here: anchorbayentertainment.com/projects/ details/vigilante-diaries trailers.apple.com/trailers/independent/ vigilantediaries For more info, visit facebook.com/ VigilanteDiaries Thanks to all of our Sponsors: FILMWEALTH.com, UpperCrust Pizza, Guacamoles Restaurant, OneEleven Conditioning Club, and The Block Sports Bar & Grill

n an unfortunate situation, the musician Beth Orton recently filmed a music video during which she spray-painted a Joshua tree and a cholla cactus. The release of her video created a concerned response over such treatment of the rare and important ecosystem that is the Mojave Desert. Orton subsequently pulled the video offline and apologized for her actions. Beth Orton has personally reached out to Mojave Desert Land Trust (MDLT) to express her extreme regret for this incident and her desire to work with us in an effort to educate others about the need to steward, protect, and respect the desert. We are engaged in conversation and look forward to developing a way to turn her actions into a positive outcome. Statement from Danielle Segura, Executive Director of Mojave Desert Land Trust: “The Mojave Desert is a unique ecosystem, as rare and important as a tropical rainforest or a coral reef for its biodiversity and ecological functions. It also has a long history of attracting artists who come here for inspiration and reflection. At the same time that artists find inspiration in the Mojave Desert, it is important that the art they create here represents care and respect for this special landscape. We appreciate that Beth Orton regrets her prior actions, and that she intends to educate others about the natural beauty of the Mojave

Desert, and the responsibility we collectively share for protecting this unique environment from vandalism and harm.” Official Statement Released From Beth Orton: “I have learned that it doesn’t always take malice to be destructive. It is vital to stay awake to the environment and give it the care it deserves. I am profoundly sorry for my lapse in judgment that afternoon. I have been humbled and I want to share what I am learning in the hope that it might stop others acting from a place of ignorance as I did. I am grateful to be working with the Mojave Desert Land Trust to find a way for my mistake to help raise awareness about the importance of protecting this rare desert environment. The desert is a work of art in and of itself and is most beautiful when we respect and protect it, when it is left as it is found.” Background on the California Desert: • The desert has a tough exterior, yet the resiliency of its underlying ecosystems can be

very vulnerable. An interconnected web of life has evolved to thrive in the desert’s harsh conditions, much of which is difficult to see at first glance. • The California Desert is an ecological gem containing rare and endangered species – both plant and animal. Habitats and landscape connections that have not been lost need to be preserved, rather than rebuilt. • The California Desert is a frontier for discovery of new species; more than half of the species new to science in California have been found here in the state’s arid lands. • The Joshua tree (yucca brevifolia), slow to adapt and migrate, is already dying out in parts of Joshua Tree National Park as temperatures continue to rise and the risk of wildfires increases. Scientists have found it could lose 90% of its current habitat in the park by century’s end. Rangewide, Joshua trees are sensitive to the effects of a changing climate and stand to lose the overwhelming majority of their habitat this century, which has prompted

some requests for it to be officially listed as a threatened species. • Most of the plants in the desert have underground roots that are deeper and greater than what one observes on the surface – one might think of this as a forest turned upside down. • Research now proves that the desert soils under intact plant communities are a carbon sink, therefore acting to absorb and offset carbon from the earth’s atmosphere. • Native people have made the California Desert home for thousands of years, leaving traces of intricate cultures that are still intact today. • The pristine landscapes and skies of the California Desert are known around the world and have been featured in National Geographic’s Top 100 Most Beautiful Places. The greatest assets to this beauty according to visitor polls are the long, unbroken scenic vistas. • The California Desert encompasses 28% of the State of CA – thereby providing a significant natural buffer protecting air and water quality for urban populations. Mojave Desert Land Trust (MDLT) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to protect the Mojave Desert ecosystem and its scenic and cultural resource values through acquisition, land stewardship and strategic partnerships. Since 2006 the organization has protected over 60,000 acres of desert land.

MIRACLE RANCH EQUINE THERAPY

EQUINE ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY AVAILABLE FOR CV RESIDENTS AND SURROUNDING AREAS. HEALING WITH HORSES PROGRAM OFFERS A WELL-RESPECTED HEALING METHOD WITH PROVEN THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS

O

ne of the most powerful therapeutic experiences another human being can achieve is through the power of animals. It is well known that in the animal kingdom, horses are one of the most intelligent and intuitive species on the planet. At Miracle Ranch, a five-acre compound outside of Palm Springs, amazing discoveries and healing occur without a word being spoken. Dozens of kids, couples, singles, veterans, parents, families, cancer patients and businesses have achieved remarkable breakthroughs through licensed therapists and interactions with the horses during retreats and therapy sessions. Miracle Ranch is the brainchild of licensed therapist Dr. Heather Gaedt, The Millionaire Psychologist, and her Sober Coach husband, Aaron Smith. Miracle Ranch is about a thirty minute drive from Palm Desert in the wooded hills. Dr. Gaedt and Coach Aaron have successfully operated the ranch with incredible results. According to Dr. Gaedt, the real therapists are the Arabian stallion, American pony, Quarter Horse and Alpacas for those who have fear of horses. Dr. Gaedt has extensive experience working as a Psychologist, with a variety of clinical and managerial experience at centers such as Betty Ford Center, UCLA Staff and Faculty Counseling Center, Michael’s House Treatment Center in Palm Springs and her own practice, The Millionaire Psychologist. Dr. Gaedt employs her academia training with her certified EAGALA equine training to help clients gain selfunderstanding and emotional growth. “Have you ever watched a movie where a horse drags its owner to safety or the countless times John Wayne and the Lone Ranger relied on their horse for support? Or cried by watching a trainer ‘whisper’ to its horse?” states Dr. Gaedt. “There is something magical and powerful about horses that humans cannot explain, and we have seen time and again the miracle of horses helping human beings recover from life’s traumas. Dr. Gaedt often incorporates Equine Assisted Psychotherapy into her successful private practice. She finds it to be a good fit with her clientele who prefer non-traditional therapy sessions. The Millionaire Psychologist brings VIP concierge counseling and customized treatment plans to a client’s home or private location. Coach Smith is an Equine Specialist, Addiction Specialist, Sober Coach and Spiritual Advisor. He has been working in the recovery field for several years. He has vast personal

and professional experience and knowledge working with addicts and alcoholics. His proven specialties include working with men and adolescents who have substance abuse and/or process addictions and grief and loss. He is a professional horseman having spent his entire life around horses. Adding Equine Assisted Psychotherapy at Miracle Ranch was the fulfillment of a lifetime goal of using horses to assist others in their growth. “Our clients have often times received more benefits in one session than from years of therapy,” said Coach Smith. “Dr. Gaedt and I have cried – along with our clients – from the power of what a horse can reveal. Miracles really do happen here – we have seen relationships mend and people get sober, while others have found find their life purpose, and much more.” The technical term for the therapeutic services offered at the ranch is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy [EAP], which is sanctioned and certified by leading non-profit institutions (EAGALA). The extensive proven benefits of equine assisted psychotherapy includes accelerated healing abilities, increased coping mechanisms, improved communications skills, expanded self-awareness, and much more. Miracle Ranch is one of the over 700 EAGALA certified facilities across the United States, and is the only one in the immediate area. One- and two-hour sessions are available, as well as retreats (with insurance supported session options). Therapeutic work is done in an arena providing a safe and comfortable environment. LOCAL MUSIC SPOTLIGHT

THE DEEP ONES

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com

BY MORGAN JAMES

F

rom Coachella Valley to Los Angeles, from backyard parties to big clubs and hotels, DJ crew The Deep Ones never disappoint with their powerfully entertaining stage presence and broad mix of musical genres which always hit the mark. The players hold an intriguing masked facade as they captivate their crowd using a fiercely energetic vibe. I spoke with Player 1 about the group’s impressive accomplishments over the last 2 years, their inspiration for their themed expression, and where they are bound from here. MJ: How did the Deep Ones get started and what was the inspiration? “We started doing house parties in April 2014, the first person to believe in us Celina, asked us to play her birthday party afterward. This would inevitably lead to us playing our first show at the Red Barn, followed by a show at The Hood later that same week. Originally we toyed with the names “The Button Mashers” and “The Koch Brothers” before finally settling on THE DEEP ONES. We are huge fans of the horror genre, and the names origin comes from visionary author H.P. Lovecraft’s 1936 novella, The Shadow over Innsmouth. We really enjoy the Deep House sound and our individual DJ names are Feckless D and Player 1, so the name only made sense… As for the suits and masks we were inspired by legendary electronic acts such as Aphex Twin, Daft Punk and Deadmau5, as well as shock rockers GWAR and Marilyn Manson. We wanted to bring a unique vibe to the Valley’s DJ scene, something different and provocative that equally represented arts, entertainment and of course music.” MJ: Who all is involved in the team? “We started as a core duo composed of Feckless D, and Player 1. Player 1 was working in La Quinta before getting a promotion to Beverly Hills, making the logistics of Desert Shows a bit trickier. Recently our producer, Wicked Sick, moved from Rhode Island to Los Angeles, and has become much more involved in our DJ performances. The trinity is finally assembled and The Deep Ones are now bigger, badder, and better than ever. Our extended D1 Family includes a number of talented DJ’s to the stable such as Intrikit, Lusk, and Falcon, and many, many more!” MJ: Tell me about The Deep Ones accomplishments up until now? “We came from humble beginnings and it’s always been about the music and not about the money. We been a launch pad for many local DJs, and we’ve reached out to almost every DJ in the Coachella Valley to play our events or theirs. This let to us forming our label, D1 entertainment, a DJ collective which now has both a Palm Desert and Los Angeles based arm, respectively. We are the resident DJs at the Red Barn, Plan B, and even Costas at one point. The Deep Ones have played grassroots sets at the Coachella and Stagecoach campgrounds, closing out the festivals even after the silent disco shuts down! We regularly play BB’s holiday Parties at the Hard Rock. We love to entertain, and although we aren’t regarded as the most skilled DJs by many veterans, we have an unparalleled spirit and stage presence, original productions, and track selection, and that in itself is our greatest accomplishment. We also recently celebrated our 2 year DJ anniversary this

8

Memorial Day.” MJ: Tell me about your goals moving forward? “Our ultimate goal would be to play large festivals in some capacity with proper sound mixing and visuals. We have the showmanship, mystique and “occult following” to make this happen. We would also like to upgrade our signature metallic masks into the realm of Hollywood level special effects. Production goals would include a full length album and collaborations with DJs that we look up to (OWSLA… Call us!)” MJ: What is up and coming that you’d like to promote? “The Deep Ones have an extremely busy month in June. First off we are releasing our first EP at the start of the summer. We have shows spread across So Cal this month, first at our “Headroom” open DJ night June 3rd at Café Zeta in Los Angeles, followed by a June 9th show at the Red Barn, then a show at Plan B on the 23rd. We are also starting a new DJ event at the famous Airliner in L.A. on the 28th to close out the month.” MJ: You seem to have a mixed genre of music that you play due to each individual DJ stylewould you agree or how would you explain your style as a whole? “Yes we would totally agree, we are very wide ranged open format with our musical style, often playing everything from opera to atmospheric movie scores in our sets! We of course passionately love our electronic music though!” Feckless D loves his house music and brings Ibiza level vibes to the table all day! Player 1 is all about that bass, coming with that Hollywood/L.A. sound long before he moved to the city! Wicked Sick is a purveyor of the dubstep, U.K. garage and halftime tracks, consistently hand picking some of the dirtiest sounds available For future D1 updates you should follow us on facebook.com/thedeeponesofficial. We love to hear from our fans! For free downloads and original Deep Ones material/DJ sets check us out on soundcloud. com/thedeepones We would like to give a huge shout out to CV Weekly for everything they do for the local community, especially to Morgan James for all her support over the past 2 years not only to us but to all the local musicians and artists here in the Coachella Valley!

BACKSTAGE JAZZ

BY PATTE PURCELL

BB KING TRIBUTE AT SHANGHAI REDS

I

t was a hot night at Shanghai Reds and the blues were even hotter at the BB King Tribute Jam produced by John Carey (Smooth Brothers). The standing room only crowd grooved to the music with a great open by John Carey on guitar with Theo, Les, Bob, and Johnny. Rose Mallett took the stage and wowed the house with “Every Day I have the Blues.” She never disappoints! Big Daddy Al Robertson took the drums and vocals and joined Kevin Henry, Chuck Ayala and Stanley Butler. Next up The Barry Baughn Blues band sang the blues. Barry Minniefield sang his heart out on vocals. Eve Holmes did a very bluesy rendition of “Kansas City.” Slim Man (CV Music Awards Best Jazz vocalist) took the stage with John Carey and smoked it with “Rock Me Baby” and “It’s All Over Now.” One of my friends stopped me on the way out and told me how awesome Slim sounded. The topper was the irrepressible, 4 time national award winning Deanna Bogart who played her ‘blusion’ style on the piano in two songs, “You’re Gonna Miss Me” and “Never Make Your Move Too Soon.” Deanna is a total crowd favorite and was joined by local sax phenom, Chase Huna. She got a standing ovation!

She was followed by Riz, The Voodoo Hustlers, Stanley Butler, and The Smooth Brothers. The finale was a rousing version of “The Thrill is Gone” with all of the musicians. The event was emceed by Jimi Fitz. As always, the food was great, the drinks were cold and the people in the desert were there to enjoy! I will be traveling this summer and Slim Man (2016 CV Music Awards, Best Jazz Vocalist) will be subbing on some guest columns for me. You’ll enjoy his humor and insights. All photos by Marco Najera

SILENCE AT THE ACE HOTEL & SWIM CLUB

I

f you’ve lived through a few summers in the desert, you know as the temperatures go up, the amount of noise around the valley goes down. On Friday June 17, things are going to get real quiet at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club as ISTHISIT presents “Silence,” a choose-yourown-DJ dance party. Have you ever been on the dance floor and wished you could change the song the DJ was playing? Silence will give you control of the music by offering three Djs playing different music at the same time to the same dance floor. All guests receive a pair of wireless head phones that have red, blue and green lights. The lights correspond to the different DJs playing different music

on each stage. With a flip of a button you can go from Deep House and New Disco to Rare Groove and Trip Hop. If its silence you want, just take off your headphones, the only thing you’ll hear will be feet shuffling across the dance floor. The styles of music played will be as varied the DJs themselves. Local DJ Alex Harrington will be playing deep house and new disco. Beatnick from San Diego will be playing rare groove and trip hop, while Dash Eye also from San Diego, will mix in some roots reggae and world beat. What goes better with music besides your favorite beverage? How about live art by local artist Warzecha. The Cathedral City resident will entertain dancers with his live

Guest will be encouraged to write on the wall in chalk what they would like to do before they die. ISTHISIT is an electrifying collaboration between founders Nero Akpowowo and Trevor “Guy Worden” who’s exclusive soirées and artistic performances will be the talk of desert. The name of the company originates from a 2001 Strokes album with the same title. This inaugural event for the duo starts at 10pm and goes till 3am at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs.

NASHVILLE ARTISTS HEADLINE HOPE FUELED BENEFIT AT PALM CANYON ROAD HOUSE IN PALM SPRINGS

O

n Thursday, June 16th, Palm Canyon Road House will host a benefit concert for the Soroptimist International House of Hope (SHOH) in Desert Hot Springs, a nonprofit organization founded in 1981 to provide recovery programs to women with substance abuse disorders. The concert will be headlined by Travis Meadows, an artist Rolling Stone calls, “Nashville’s most bad ass songwriter.” Meadows’ own path to recovery is woven into his albums and performances, inspiring hope, healing and inspiration. A truly gifted

performer in his own right, Meadows’ songs have been recorded by artists Hank Williams JR., Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eric Church, Dierks Bentley, Wynonna Judd, and more. His songs have also been featured on the television series, “Nashville.” Grammy and CCMA award-winning singer/songwriter, Jann Browne will also be performing. Browne has toured with and opened for country icons Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard, was part of the Grammy award-winning group, Asleep at the Wheel, and has recorded with Emmylou Harris and Wanda Jackson (to name a few).

Local artists, Wade Crawford along with the 2016 Coachella Valley Music Award’s “Best Country Band,” Lisa Lynn and the Country Gentlemen, will also join the lineup. Soroptimist International’s House of Hope provides residential substance abuse recovery programs for women in both their Desert Hot Springs recovery facility and their Transitional Living Home located in Banning. During their 35 years, the organization has helped thousands of women through a comprehensive and effective social model program offering housing, companionship and guidance, therapeutic activities, and a structured daily routine that enables them to establish and maintain sober and healthy lives.

AND GENTLEMEN…THE BANGLES” (OMNIVORE RECORDINGS) THE BANGLES “LADIES

ertain cities are known for specific genres of music. Chicago is the home of the Blues, New York is the birthplace of Punk, Detroit, a.k.a. “Hitsville, U.S.A.” spawned the Soulful R&B of Motown and Nashville is the capital of Country music. Los Angeles, well, Los Angeles is the home of everything. Because the City Of Angels is such a sprawling metropolis, it is a melting pot of races, ethnicities and cultures. Disparate music scenes have always managed to co-exist, sometimes even drafting off seemingly contrary styles to create unique hybrids. This was best exemplified in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Punk had exploded in first in New York and then Great Britain, Los Angeles quickly followed suit. Bands like the Germs, the Plugz and X were the progenitors in Southern California. It wasn’t long before these artists were adding different textures and colors to the Punk Rock palette. As X incorporated more ‘50s era roots and Rockabilly into their sound it opened the door for the Blasters and Los Lobos. Rank And File crosspollenated Country and Punk, creating Cow-Punk, Gun Club took that a step further incorporating trace elements of Blues. Chris Desjardins’ Flesh Eaters were an intoxicating Blues/Jazz/Psychobilly mash-up. Diving head first into this sweaty musical mosh pit were four bands that became loosely known as the Paisley Underground, Dream Syndicate, Salvation Army (who, after threat of legal action from the venerable charity became the Three O’Clock), Rain Parade and the Bangles. Their inspiration went back to the ‘60s, blending FolkRock, Psychedelia and Garage Rock. Each band inspired rave reviews and devoted followers, but the Bangles drew the most attention as an all-girl anomaly in a male-centric demi-monde. The daughter of a psychoanalyst and film director, Susannah Hoffs grew up in Los Angeles loving the Beatles, and singing along with classic AM radio. She began playing guitar in her teens, but by the time she was matriculating at UC Berkeley her primary focus was dance. That changed when she attended what turned out to be the final shows of the Sex Pistols and Patti Smith Group. She returned home determined to start a band. Placing an ad in the Recycler she became acquainted with Vicki and Debi Peterson. The sisters grew up in the Valley and had been playing guitar and drums since they were kids. They had just finished a stint in a local band called Those Girls.

The trio got together for the first time two days after John Lennon was murdered. They redirected their grief and jammed on Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit.” There was immediate musical symbiosis. They were all equally influenced by the primitive D.I.Y. spirit of Punk and the sunshiny Psychedelia and Garage Rock of the ‘60s. Originally a three-piece, they were the Colours, and then the Supersonic Bangs. When bassist Annette Zilinskas joined the fold their name was shortened to the Bangs. They began gigging around L.A. and recorded their debut single “Getting Out Of Hand” in late 1981. The band released the 7” vinyl on theirown label, DownKiddie Records. It landed in the hands of influential DJ (and unofficial Mayor Of The Sunset Strip), Rodney Bingenheimer. He began playing the song on his KROQ radio show. By April 1982, the Bangs were signed to the Faulty Products label, an offshoot of IRS Records, (home to Oingo Boingo, the Cramps and Wall Of Voodoo). Two months later, on the eve of releasing their five song EP, they were threatened with a law suit by a New Jersey band also named the Bangs. So they elongated their moniker to the Bangles. By the end of the year they were touring as an opening act for the English Beat. Between Rodney On The ‘Roq and college radio, the Bangles were making a name for themselves. In March 1983, they appeared on American Bandstand. Apparently, Columbia Records liked what they saw, and they promptly signed the band. Unfortunately, Annette quit the Bangles, joining the ragged CowPunk collective, Blood On The Saddle. Michael Steele (ne’ Susan Nancy Thomas), who had been in the original line-up of the Runaways, stepped in and assumed bass duties. Their full-length, major label debut, All Over The Place arrived in 1984. It received rave reviews, garnered airplay on MTV and peaked at #80 on the charts. It also brought them to the attention of Prince, who was actually in the audience when the band headlined a show at the Palace in Hollywood. Two years later when they released their sophomore long-player, Different Light, they were armed with a secret weapon. “Manic Monday,” the first track and lead-off single, was penned by “Christopher,” a not-so-secret pseudonym of his Royal Purple Majesty, Prince. It was a great song, and it skyrocketed up the charts, peaking at #2. The album was a huge success. Unfortunately, the record company succeeded in sanding away the quartet’s rough edges, turning them into reluctant sex symbols. Chafing at their new glamorous image, and the media’s myopic fixation on Hoffs, there was some dissention in the ranks. They recorded one more album, the sleek and streamlined Everything in 1988. It included the execrable “Eternal Flame” ballad, which actually made it to #1. But the Bangles came apart at the seams in the early ‘90s, and soon called it quits. Everyone still continued making music; Vicki played with the Continental Drifters and teamed with Susan Cowsill as the Psycho Sisters. Debi formed Kindred Spirit, Michael played in several bands including Crash Wisdom and Eyesore. Of course, Columbia Records launched a high profile solo career for Susannah Hoffs, but the two records she made in 1991 and 1996 sank without a trace. At the turn of the 21st century the four-piece was persuaded to reunite and record a song for the second Austin Powers movie Susannah’s husband,

Jay Roach, directed all three Psychedelic spoofs). In 2003 they released their fourth full-length, Doll Revolution. The title track was a trenchant reworking of the Elvis Costello song. A tour followed. Eight years later they returned with Sweetheart Of The Sun, produced by Matthew Sweet. Having recently collaborated with Susannah on a couple Under The Covers records (the pair covered favorite hits from the ‘60s in volume one and the ‘70s in volume two), he seemed like an excellent choice. Sweetheart... actually was kind of perfect, exactly what the Bangles might have sounded like after All Over The Place. If only their label hadn’t been hell bent on turning them into New Wave sex kittens. Unfortunately, Michael Steele wasn’t satisfied with the limited touring schedule and quit the band. These days the Bangles survive as a trio, playing, recording and touring when it suits them. They recently raided their archives and with the help of Omnivore Recordings (fast becoming the go-to label for all things cool), curated an album filled with early recordings, demos, live tracks and essential ephemera. Ladies and Gentlemen…The Bangles! kicks into gear with a surprisingly muscular instrumental, “Bitchen Summer/Speedway.” Ambient noise and a whispery intro (“ladies and gentlemen the Bangs”), is followed by a cartoon explosion. The track is propelled by a pummeling “Hawaii 5-0” backbeat, thrumming bass lines and rippling guitar licks that fuzz, buzz and yowl. It’s a loving surf/spy pastiche that wouldn’t be out of place in one of those teen exploitation movies that played exclusively at the drive-in. The album presents the band’s self-titled five song EP in its entirety on CD for the very first time. Even now, it’s hard to believe the Bangles had been together just a year when they recorded these epochal songs. “Real World” is an iridescent charmer, blending hopscotch rhythms, chiming guitars, kaleidoscopic harpsichord and vocals that pivot from lush harmonics to growly urgency. The lyrics navigate the sweet sensations of new love. Honeyed harmonies belie the helplessly hoping tone of “I’m In Line.” Debbi takes the lead, asserting her independence; “I don’t want to waste my time waiting on some guy to change his mind/ You don’t even notice standing in the shadows, and I can’t tell you why.” The melody is buoyed by elastic bass lines, an insistent TomTom beat and guitars that are sharp, stinging and shagadelic. “Want You” is the Bangles at their Punkiest. The melody is a sun-kissed kissin’ cousin to the “Batman” theme, powered by a frenetic backbeat, scorching guitars and Vicki’s exigent vocals. Conversely, “Mary Street” feels like the musical

love child of the Byrds and the Left Banke. It opens with pinwheeling guitar riffs that jingle and jangle in the morning, while their vocal alchemy goes for baroque. The EP closes out with a rollicking cover of “How Is The Air Up There.” Written by Steve Duboff and Artie Kornfeld, (best known as the music promoter for Woodstock), for their band Changing Times, it was also recorded by New Zealand’s La-De-Das. A fairly obscure Garage Rock nugget, both ‘60s versions are shambolic and slightly Dylanesque. The Bangles’ rendition is gritty, but concise. The drums pound out a tribal tattoo, bass and guitar follow suit and Annette Zilinskas adds some high lonesome harmonica. Vicki vocals are out in front. Her sardonic tone magnifies the lyrics’ sharp, ruling class rebuke. If the album ended there, that would certainly be satisfactory, but Ladies and Gentlemen… offers up so much more. First up is the Bangs’ doublesided debut single, “Getting Out Of Hand” backed with “Call On Me.” The original 7” vinyl fetches as much as $400.00 on record collector sites and it’s easy to see why. The former is anchored by walking bass lines and a tick-tock beat. Over shimmery harmonies, Susannah’s sunshiny mien camouflages suspicions of infidelity. For their nascent effort song is ridiculously self-assured. The latter was co-written by Dave Roback (the Rain Parade front man who went on to create Opal and Mazzy Star). It’s accented by a triple time handclap rhythm, roiling bass and fleet fretwork. It’s an infectious workout that might inspire the listener to revisit ‘60s dance crazes like the Frug and the Hully Gully. The demos are made up of slightly less polished takes on the aforementioned “The Real World” and “Call On Me.” The Bangs also add their effervescent imprimatur to a couple of ‘60s classics. First up is “Outside Chance,” a Warren Zevon song made famous by the Turtles. It’s followed by Paul Revere And The Raiders’ “Steppin’ Out.” Here it’s recalibrated as a growly Garage-Psych freak-out. The live tracks are the only songs from Michael Steele’s tenure in the band. They include a scorching take on “Tell Me,” from the All Over The Place album, along with a wicked version of the feral Love classic, “7&7 Is.” (This was actually recorded at the 1984 show Prince attended.) The album closes with a couple of throwaways, which are actually surprisingly potent. “No Mag Commercial” is a winsome homage to the underground Hollywood music fanzine. Tongue firmly in cheek, it recalls the halcyon days when the Rolling Stones did Rice Krispies jingles. The final track is “Rock & Roll Alternative Program Theme Song,” a raucous rave-up created especially for the legendary Post-Punk radio show on KZEW in Dallas-Fort Worth. Although these songs were recorded back in the early ‘80s, in a blind Pepsi challenge they fit hand in glove with current tracks by L.A. tastemakers like Bleached and Best Coast. 35 years ago three musicians cast a backward glance toward a sound that the world had rendered anachronistic. Giving it their own spin, they managed reach the top of the charts and make history. Sure, this collection was created for Bangles super-fans and completists, but these songs truly stand the test of time.

ART SCENE EXCAVATION OF THE IMMACULATE HEART – BY ANGELA ROMEO THE WORK OF ROBIN PRZYBYSZ

June 9 to June 15, 2016

O

ften we hear the phrase “she is a woman in a man’s world.” And as the world changes, we learn that acceptance and respect are for all. The art world still has its prejudices. For example there is an ongoing debate concerning craft vs., art. There is a school that views craft as a skill at making useful items, and that art is a symbolic expression of ideas, emotions and experiences. Perhaps craft do tend to be utilitarian and art is a way to express emotion or reality. But perhaps the debate can be distilled to cultural bias and aesthetics. As ridiculous as the argument may be the ongoing debate that certain art is craft and not worthy of serious study and gallery space is blown to bits when looking at the work of artists such as Robin Przybysz. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1963, Robin Adams Przybysz grew up in a family that was involved in the arts. Her family’s history in the arts involves acting, modeling, landscape architecture, sculpture, and lithography. Przybysz developed a career as artist/educator. Przybysz received her undergrad degree in Fine Arts/Art Education from the University of Cincinnati in 1986, and returned in 1991 to serve as an Adjunct Professor for the Art Education Department. Przybysz has spent the last three decades exhibiting her work in the United Stated and teaching art to children Kprep-12. She is currently working on her MFA degree at Azusa Pacific University in Southern California with an emphasis on sculpture installation. She will graduate July 2016 following her solo exhibition, Excavation of the Immaculate Heart. Excavation of the Immaculate Heart runs June 11to July 1 at the Duke Gallery, Azusa Pacific University, West Campus, 701 E. Foothill Boulevard, Azusa CA. At. The work is testament to craft as art, art as craft and to a woman ready to be more than a woman in a man’s world challenging the views of fine art. “As a woman artist in today’s society, I have so many more advantages than women in past histories, yet I find that many of us women still struggle for recognition and to be taken seriously. The strengths of my work fall under Contemporary Craft undergirded by women’s work and feminism. I have found my voice in my art in such a way that it is not only relevant to today’s art world, but also how it links me to my past culture and how I will influence generations to come through the bloodline we share,” said Robin. “This exhibition is challenge for the viewer and me. We all began from the same place, the womb. We grow and develop influenced by the circumstances that surround us. But we are allowed to rewrite our history and our paths. Self-awareness and self-respect are journeys to self. The compilation of this work shows various

developmental phases of a female figure in fetal position while in utero, being transformed through lines, patterns, and textures of various natural and tactile fibers such as linen, wood, paper, and plaster. I wish for my audience to experience a visceral connection, one of strength and perseverance, when viewing the signs, symbols, and images of my art; which hold a universal experience inside the psychological and physiological stages of life.” For Robin the work is about the process. “It is the physical act of drawing, burning, or sculpting lines and forms that I find myself in an introspective trance; one that carries me away to another place in time through the rhythmical process of repetitious cadence in manipulating my materials. As I reflect back on the unfolding journey I have traveled, I see the validity and vulnerability in altering my life’s patterns to have new momentum without restriction. The skills I perform while crafting my sculptural bodies of art, and the natural fibrous materials I choose offer me a sensual, sensorial feel in my hands that become an extension of the gestures of my body. The designs I fashion in my artworks whether burned, stitched, drawn, coiled, or constructed into three-dimensional sculptures become a symbolic language for me. The inscriptions are a soothing dialect, and my development of transforming the medium is a meditative, ceremonial, and flowing state of motion.” Excavation of the Immaculate Heart is a more than an installation exhibition. To surrender to its power the viewer can find that craft and art are irrelevant when the chance to transform one’s life lies at their feet. “My work speaks of renewal and liberation from the oppression of childhood trauma by redirecting my own path in restructuring the cellular makeup of the story of my life; it declares hope, persistence, and determination. I will continue on this expedition that women have paved before me in making my voice heard.” Excavation of the Immaculate Heart runs June 11 to July 1 at the Duke Gallery, Azusa Pacific University, West Campus, 701 E. Foothill Boulevard, Azusa CA. For more about Robin Przybysz visit www.artintexture.com.

BACKPACK SAYS “PLEASE MICROCHIP US CATS!”

O

n May 26th, John Finley was home in Seaback, Washington, casually checking emails on his computer. He was shocked when he received one from HomeAgain Microchip stating Animal Samaritans Veterinary Clinic in Thousand Palms identified a cat belonging to him from its microchip. The animal was caught in a trap by Loving All Animals and brought in to be spayed. Shock quickly turned to elation as John never expected to see his beloved cat, Backpack, again. Tears of joy streamed down his face as John quickly made preparations for the two day drive back to Palm Desert to retrieve Backpack. Within two hours, John was on the road heading for Southern California, eagerly anticipating a reunion with his treasured 10-year-old Tabby cat. Back in February, John made a 4-day stop at the Emerald Desert RV Resort in Palm Desert. The first night there, his beloved cat went missing. John spent the next 3 days frantically searching for Backpack, on foot and by bicycle. He finally had to return to Washington, heartbroken and never expecting to see his best “furfriend” again. John recalls, “I’d given up. I assumed something happened to her or perhaps she’d found another home. It was a big surprise to

find out Backpack was alive. I left within the next 2 hours to get her.” On May 25th, Palm Desert resident Kathy Faria spotted the same gray Tabby cat in her yard for the fifth day in a row. Kathy contacted Mary Ewing at Loving All Animals for assistance. Mary told her about the agency’s Trap/Neuter/Return program (TNR), and provided a trap along with instructions about getting the animal sterilized. The bright kitty initially scurried away when she first saw the trap, but Kathy woke up the next morning to see the animal secured inside. A 6:15 am phone call to volunteer Norma Smith brought Norma racing over to meet the 7:30 am spay/neuter drop-off deadline at Animal Samaritans. Norma was amazed when the clinic vet told her their scanner revealed the stray cat was microchipped. She also had a scar indicating she was spayed. Mary Ewing is actively involved in the TNR and cat rescue efforts. The Coachella Valley has thousands of stray cats and kittens, many of them feral and unsocialized. Others are lost and discarded pets. The cat overpopulation crisis is such that 80% of these beautiful felines don’t make it out alive from our nation’s public shelters. Few of the cats entering shelters are microchipped

and only 2% of them are reclaimed by their humans. Mary reports, “I’ve been involved in the TNR of about 750 cats, and this is the first one that turned out to be microchipped.” On May 28th, an ecstatic John Finley scooped up a somewhat thinner Backpack, and the cat purred happily when reunited with her human. Other than losing weight and acquiring a small scar on the nose, Backpack was in relative good condition after her ordeal. John states, “You MUST microchip your pet. Otherwise, there is no chance to get them back if they go missing. Secondly, you must find the right group of animal lovers to network with.”

Backpack’s story was nothing short of miraculous. It’s a story that highlights the importance of microchipping, Trap/Neuter/ Return programs, and a community working together for the welfare of our companion animals. A microchip is a tiny glass bead the size of a grain of rice embedded with a unique number registered with the owner’s contact information in a database. Insertion between the shoulder blades is relatively painless. Contact your local veterinarian, or one of the low-cost spay/neuter clinics that offer low cost microchipping. When a stray animal comes in contact with a shelter or veterinarian, they routinely scan for a microchip. Keep the microchip company updated on your contact information. For more information about TNR programs for “community cats” go to the website for Alley Cat Allies at www.alleycat. com. For more information on how YOU can help homeless cats and dogs, contact Loving All Animals at (760) 834-7000. If Backpack could talk, this lucky feline would surely tell you, “If you love your pet, please protect them with a microchip.” Jmcafee7@verizon.net

THE VINO VOICE

SIMPLY THE BEST CHARDONNAY AT BEACH SYMPOSIUM

P

ismo Beach, with its laid back atmosphere and cleansing sea breezes, is hardly the spot I would have thought to be tasting the most delicious Chardonnay around—but it was! Indeed, it was an international Chardonnay conference with wine folk and pioneers from all over the world that famously produce this bestselling white wine. The International Chardonnay Symposium brought top global Chardonnay producers to the classic California beach towns of Pismo Beach, Avila Beach and the near-by Edna Valley wine country for an in-depth exploration of the world’s favorite grape and its impact on viticulture, tastemakers and the market. Last month’s line-up featured a grand wine tasting, educational seminars & panel sessions, winemaker dinners and plenty of opportunities to talk Chardonnay with industry leaders, tastemakers and fellow enthusiasts. In conjunction with The Symposium, many Central Coast wineries and businesses offered special promotions and events to complete the experience. Unlike a typical food and wine festival, The Chardonnay Symposium’s primary purpose was to educate and inform top industry professionals, as well as devoted consumers, about current events and trends in Chardonnay production and culture around the world. Topics and particular seminars included: Vintners Wine Tech Symposium; French Forum: Exploring The Wonders of French Chardonnay; Wente Clone ComparativeTasting; Sparkling Wine & Oysters Gala; Taste the Difference: Exploring California’s Distinct Chardonnay Regions: Hone Your Chardonnay BlindTasting Skills; What’s Oak Got To Do With It?; and Pairing Chardonnay & Artisanal Cheese. These seminars along with stellar wine pairing dinners were held at various first class hotels and beach resorts that included Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort, The Cliffs Resort, and the Avila Beach Golf Resort. The final day’s Grand Chardonnay Tasting was assembled on the lawn of the beautiful Greengate Ranch & Vineyard. The Central Coast is wine country where

it’s not only great fun exploring nearby wineries, but the seaside resort towns also offer winetasting rooms, pristine beaches, surfing and kayaking, hiking and biking trails, farm-to-table and seaport-inspired cuisine, boutique shopping, and more. I realize for some of you readers, talking about these past wine events & tastings is kind of along the lines of having to hear someone go on about their fantastic fanciful dinner the night before. Unless you’re into the restaurant biz or an enthusiastic foodie—although somewhat happy for the chatty diner—what you’d really wish to say is, “Okay,—but what did you bring back for me!” And of course I’m reporting this vino event because these are the type of experiences that wine enthusiasts will consider and actually treat themselves to—be it once a year or once in a lifetime! Enjoy the wonderful world of wine and stay informed on these great annual events. thechardonnaysymposium.com Most of you readers already know Chardonnay is America’s bestselling white wine, but do we realize that California produces more than 20% of the varietal’s total worldwide acreage! Originated in France’s Burgundy region, it has found a home in most major winegrowing areas worldwide, including every primary wine appellation in California. Chardonnay flavor profiles range from rich, buttery, powerful wines to lean clean unoaked styles. Winemakers love this grape because it adapts well to a variety of climates, has high yields, and, due to oak regimen, malolactic fermentation, aging and more, aromas and flavors can change greatly. At the Symposium, we came to realize that few families have more to do with California Chardonnay than Wente—the First Family of Chardonnay. Founded by Carl Wente in Livermore Valley in 1883, Wente Vineyards was one of the first to label “California Chardonnay” in 1936! Over a period of 40 years, second generation winemaker Ernest Wente selected Burgundy vines that showed favorable traits, great soil potential and re-planted them setting the stage for the

BY RICK RIOZZA creation of the world-renowned “Wente Clone” which has been used in most vineyards in the U.S. and is the foundation of some the most famous white wines in the New World. As your friendly neighborhood wine steward, I personally know of the family’s commitment to producing 100% estate grown sustainably farmed wines in the Livermore Valley, (Morning Fog label) and Monterrey’s Arroyo Seco, (Riva Ranch). At the Symposium, the Wente family presented some gorgeous vertical vintages from their collection. Winery notes of current releases: Wente Vineyards 2015 Morning Fog—“Livermore Valley Chardonnay offers crisp flavors of green apple and tropical fruit with a touch of vanilla and toasty oak. It has a nice full body and balanced acidity leading to a medium refreshing finish.“ Wente Vineyards 2014 Riva Ranch— “Chardonnay from Arroyo Seco in Monterey County is a particular favorite reflecting the terroir of this perfect Chardonnay region. You will love the tropical fruit aromas and flavors tied with great acidity and creamy notes of butter, vanilla and soft oak.” “The Wente 2015 Small Lot Eric’s Chardonnay is from Livermore Valley, where the grapes are handpicked and sorted at

harvest time in order to ensure premium quality. This unoaked Chardonnay is clear and bright with a nice balance of fruit and acidity making it refreshing by itself or with food. You will enjoy the Chardonnay fruit qualities shining through with lemon zest, green apple, citrus, pear, pineapple, and nectarine.” These wines can be found at about every supermarket in town. beautiful and fitting songs do not distract. This movie set the animation standards and raised the bar for decades to come. The quality of the handcrafted art is still a wonder. When I was working on Ralph Bakshi’s “Lord of the Rings,” there was an older woman artist who told me she worked on “Snow White” and was responsible for dabbing her thumbprint in pink paint to place the rosy glow on Snow’s cheek. This beautiful hi-def transfer is definitely one for the digital home library

A PRAYER FOR THE DYING (1987)

EXODUS (1960)

Director Bryan Singer is back with another X-Men extravaganza that’s top-heavy with predictable clichés and big cgi action. But really, isn’t that what it’s all about? Drawing on realworld religious mythology, the plot has the ancient god Apocalypse returning (talk about your “ancient aliens”) who, by the way, has been worshipped since the dawn of civilization as the first and most powerful of all the mutants in Marvel’s X-Men universe. Now, after being dormant for millennia he’s back in the real world after amassing the powers of many other mutants and becoming immortal and invincible. But upon awakening, he’s disillusioned with the world as he finds it so he recruits a team of mutants to cleanse mankind (remember the Old Testament’s angry god who brings on the great flood for the same reasons?). The themes in this film strike me as not only Biblical but also very jihadist. However, I think the confused storyline drifts from what it could be. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (!) helps Professor X lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest enemy and hopefully save mankind from complete and total destruction. I was not impressed with the tedious and overloaded action and the mostly clichéd villain that diminishes the otherwise fine performers and somewhat relevant themes. This is not a peak experience for fans of this particular superhero franchise. I wonder if there’s still an appetite for the seemingly endless stream of superhero movies? My hunger has been more than satisfied, especially after the hugely anticipated but greatly disappointing “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice”.

From writer-director Louise Osmond, this enthralling and truly inspiring documentary drama tells the bigger-than-life true story of how a lowly barmaid with minimal assets and her working class friends in a defunct mining village in South Wales breed a champion racehorse. I was moved by this terrific true tale that does not disappoint. I loved the notion that a group of inexperienced friends can take on the powers of the elitist “Sport of Kings” and come out on top. This fresh take on a David and Goliath story is immensely satisfying to all who desire to wake up and make their dreams come true. Big recommendation. SNOW WHITE (1937) Walt Disney’s genius as an artist and visionary is on full display in this timeless and beloved tale. The story is involving and the wonderfully drawn characters come alive in a vibrant world that truly comes alive. This is a unique genuine piece of living art. And the

Otto Preminger’s powerful epic is a fictional but fact-based account of the struggle for the emergence of modern Israel as an independent country and home for world Jewry. It remains a relevant and engrossing film that’s worth revisiting. The great cast features Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint, Ralph Richardson, Peter Lawford, Lee J. Cobb, Sal Mineo, John Derek, Hugh Griffith and Jill Haworth (the latter on who I had a crush). Ernest Gold’s rousing Oscar© winning score can be enjoyed as an isolated six-track option. This crisp restoration is part of Screen Archives series of limited editions of only 3,000 units. Twilight Time Movies. Blu-ray.

Director Mike Hodges’ adaptation of the Jack Higgins thriller focuses on a former IRA terrorist (Mickey Rourke) forced into killing a mobster in order to walk away from a lifetime of violence. Bob Hoskins co-stars as the priest who may offer him redemption, with Alan Bates as a flamboyant London crime lord who’s had enough of both IRA man and man of God. Mickey Rourke, Bob Hoskins, Alan Bates, Sammi Davis, Christopher Fulford, Liam Neeson and Alison Doody make up the near perfect cast. Among the extras, Bill Conti’s fine score can be enjoyed as an Isolated Track (with some effects) / also fascinating comments by Director Mike Hodges on “A Prayer for the and Director of Photography Mike Garfath. Twilight Time Limited Edition. Blu-ray. LONDON HAS FALLEN

IN THE FRENCH STYLE (1963)

The marvelous Irwin Shaw adapted two of his own Paris-set short stories for In the French Style (1963), directed by Robert Parrish (The Wonderful Country) and starring Jean Seberg. Once again, Seberg is the archetypal footloose American girl in the City of Light, engaging in a series of affairs before falling hard for a harddrinking journalist (Stanley Baker). Beautifully shot by Michel Kelber (French Cancan) and featuring a score by the man who was, for many years, Jean Renoir’s house composer, Joseph Kosma. Featured co-stars: Jean Seberg, Stanley Baker, Phillippe Forquet, Addison Powell, Jack Hedley, Maurice Teynac and Claudine Auger. There’s an Isolated Score Track (with some effects) and an interesting Audio Commentary with Film Historians Lem Dobbs, Julie Kirgo, and Nick Redman. Twilight Time Movies limited edition (only 3,000 units). Blu-ray.

“London Has Fallen” traps a talented cast -and all who choose to see it -- in a film loaded with xenophobia and a cornucopia of action movie clichés. Gerard Butler is back as Secret Service Agent Mike Banning. This sequel to the worldwide smash hit “Olympus Has Fallen” begins in London, where the British Prime Minister has passed away under mysterious circumstances. His funeral is a must-attend event for word leaders. However, what starts out as the most protected event on Earth turns into a deadly plot to kill attendees, devastate every known landmark in the British capital, and unleash a terrifying vision of the future. Only three people have any hope of stopping it: the President of the United States (Aaron Eckhart), his formidable Secret Service head (Gerard Butler), and an English MI-6 agent who for good reasons trusts no one. The screen is awash in chaotic and non-stop cgi action. If that’s your cup of tea, this one’s for you. I must admit, it’s still a thrill to see recognizable landmarks blown up! But that’s my 12-year old inner child speaking. Universal. Blu-ray. Comments? RobinESimmons@aol.com

BOOK REVIEW

GETTING CLEAN

-----------------------------------------------------

“THE LIFE-CHANGING MAGIC OF TIDYING UP” BY MARIE KONDO NONFICTION ----------------------------------------------------aving a home and workspace that’s simplified, clean and organized, seems like wishful thinking. It may be something we all want, maybe dream of, but it seems impossible to achieve, especially if you live with others. Perhaps after cleaning in a manic state it might stay tidy for a while, but forever? In Marie Kondo’s The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing (Ten Speed Press, 224 pages), putting your house in order will change your life. From the age of five, author Kondo had a love for home and lifestyle magazines. At age 15, she was inspired to study organizing and tidying. As an adult, she formed a company and a system calling it the KonMari Method. She is Japanese and in some ways a Zen master of sorts.

BY HEIDI SIMMONS A consultant and professional organizer, Kondo has helped her clients in more ways than just throwing out old unwanted things. She claims to have dramatically transformed their lifestyles, perspective, thinking – and their futures. Kondo claims by addressing your personal surroundings, you can conquer the psychological issues that keep you from achieving your highest self. Improving your space, improves your life. Pretty simple right? Well, yes and no. Tidying up and keeping it that way takes a certain awareness and a strong commitment. In the introduction, Kondo admits that not everyone can clean and organize for life. The cause is not lack of skills, but rather one’s state of mind. “Success is 90 percent dependent on our mind-set.” She says, that without addressing the “mind-set” rebound is inevitable. But, by acquiring the KonMari Method, the right technique can be learned and practiced to create order and to become a tidy and organized person. Kondo believes it has far more to do with the accumulation of mistaken notions than about tidying. “Order is dependent on the extremely personal values of what a person wants to live with.” Breaking everything into steps, Kondo delivers a way to start discarding and reorganizing “things.” Often she personifies objects giving permission to set them free. She suggests putting everything in a

particular category, like shoes, all on the floor. Then evaluate what gives you joy and what you never wear. Only keep what you love. Problem here is you do you have enough space to just sort? Books are treated the same way as shoes. This is tough in my household. Kondo goes through the whole house room by room sorting all your shit. It’s tough, but it’s good. Maybe it’s most important to take stock of your belongings. Honestly, the read was great. But putting it into action is not so simple for me. Reading it feels like it’s almost enough. I do feel better about what I have and what I like. But, I still have emotional difficulty getting rid of sentimental attachments. Where it really makes a difference is in how I shop or look at anything I think I want. I don’t really need anything new. I feel validated not spending money on

needless things. (Unless they’re beautiful, unique, odd, interesting or one-of-a-kind.) As one might expect, the book is well organized and detailed. There are only five chapters, which are broken up with bold subheadings that are numbered at the start of the book for a quick return or reference. This book has been a bestseller since its US release. Obviously, Americans have too much stuff. After all it’s the American way. I knew The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up was something I should read, but I avoided it. It was the art on the cover -- the serene sky with clouds -- that made me finally take in the words of wisdom. I want my life to feel like the cover looks. There are some strange elements and odd advice in the book to help us understand our things that I think would make more sense if you were born and raised in Japan. For instance: “Your possessions want to help you.” But, learning that you can do without is psychologically liberating. Kondo’s philosophical perspective is that everything you possess should “spark joy and happiness.” Ultimately, Kondo’s message is clean and simple: Surround yourself with only the things you love! Hopefully, that will leave you some space to walk through your house.

BAYLOR LOOKING TO FIX THE UN-FIXABLE..

B

aylor has won a lot of football games. An inherent part of that process, it turns out, was Art Briles playing Father Figure for troubled, talented football players and the program, the athletic department, and the university exhibiting profound ignorance toward the safety and welfare of its female students. This did not happen at a broad, socioeconomically troubled part of a city or county. Or in a third world country half around the globe. It happened at Baylor, a small, private, religious institution supposed to aspire to something better, or at least more scrutinized. Full details of Baylor’s independent investigation have not been released. But, it’s safe to say they were damning. Heads on pikes now include the head football coach, the athletic director, and the university president–the three most powerful figures at Baylor. The scale, speed, and decisiveness of Baylor’s actions feel incredible. The fact they feel incredible in these circumstances tells much about where we are with college

football. So does the college football media’s collective reaction: recoiling in horror, staring at the screen for a long while, tepidly throwing out hypothetical coaching hires for 2017. Fox Sports 1’ Colin Cowherd among others have suggested Baylor take a year off or more from football to regroup. A former football rape victim called for Baylor to stop playing football altogether. Both suggestions, given the magnitude of this scandal, seem rational and reasonable. Neither will happen. This has nothing to do with the “studentathletes.” Their concerns, while real, are unfortunately mute here. Nor would it have to do with sudden scheduling difficulties for Northwestern State, Liberty, Abilene Christian, and the University of wherever would not have a problem finding a place to play on any given Saturday. It’s about money. That could be the money for the $266 million Baylor just spent building its fancy new football stadium. That could be the TV money needed to fund the rest of Baylor’s athletic department. That

could be the perceived effect on money from alumni engagement with the academic university in a post-football world. Baylor football, while hardly big relative to its Power 5 competition, is too big to fail. We’re too far gone for sheer inhumanity (probably systemic), not to mention frightening ongoing health concerns, to dent the sport. Media outlets that could hold football to account, depend on football.

College Football may, someday, face a reckoning. It won’t come through reason. It won’t come through empathy. It will come when the dying embers of the cable television model meet escalating insurance costs. In short, when the money train stops. This is years and years away – but there will be a day when the chickens come to roost. On a happier note – Warriors took a commanding 2-0 lead versus the Cleveland Cavaliers of Sunday. Quick research tells me that 94% of all teams in an NBA series when up 2-0, have gone on to win the series. Easy to love MVP Steph Curry is leading a real team playing real basketball. It’s fun to watch, not competitive, but isn’t that the point when a team is simply better, in this case of a watered down NBA, WAY better. Now with Love questionable, Kyrie doing I’m not even sure what you call it, and the splash bothers yet to really even wake up offensively. Chill the Champagne – this will be a quick series. LeBron needs a miracle.

SCHOOL’S OUT F

our in five California high schoolers will graduate putting us on par with the national average of 81%. Iowa has the highest graduation rate at 90% while Oregon is the lowest at 68% while the District of Columbia graduates 60% of high schoolers. Looking only at low income families, 75% of California high schoolers graduate making us 25th in the nation. With an average graduation rate of 73%, Kentucky does the best at 85% while Alaska is worst at 59.5%. The District of Columbia graduates 59%. Looking at things here in the desert, Palm Springs Unified has the highest graduation rate at 90.8% with only 5.7% dropping out. Desert Sands Unified comes in a close second at 89.4% (6.2% dropout) while Coachella Unified graduates 83.4% (11.8% dropout) For Riverside County, Murrieta had the highest graduation rates at 92.5% (5.1% dropout) while Banning was the worst at 78% (17.8% dropout rate). Heat Exhaustion Last week numerous people fell ill to heat exhaustion when Palm Desert High

School held their graduation ceremonies outdoors in the sun on a day when the temperature rose to between 115 and 119 degrees across most of the Coachella Valley. Spokesman Mary Perry said that there was ‘no way’ they could have anticipated the heat levels. Perry said this despite many days of warnings that extreme heat was coming…and the fact that it was June in the desert. The daytime ceremony replaced evening ceremonies a few years ago as administrators were concerned that evening ceremonies were responsible for late night ‘celebrations’ by students. If graduations are going to be held outside in the sun in 100 degree temperatures in June, having students wear non-breathable gowns over another layer of clothing seems

a tad reckless given that temperatures are likely to exceed 100 degrees this time of year. Also, people should not be allowed to stake out seats early in the day as that exposes them to too much time underneath a harsh sun in high temperatures. People have asked me who was responsible for this failure of judgement. While I doubt the decision was made by only one person, the principal of that school is Robert Hicks, the Superintendent of Desert Sands Unified is Gary Rutherford and the Board of Directors are Michael Duran, Donald Griffith, Wendy Jonathan, Matt Monica and Gary Tomak. While all of the people named are good and smart people who have the best interests of the students in mind, common sense needs to be applied. Hopefully this event will cause school administrators to look at how they handle future graduation ceremonies. While we are thinking about the welfare of our children while at school, can we rethink the idea of starting school in midAugust? Temperatures often exceed 110 degrees through September. This is one area where the Coachella Valley should vary from teaching standards and apply common sense standards.

Commonly Misspelled Words Google recently published a list of top spelling mistakes by the people of each state. Here in California, ‘desert’ was the most misspelled word. Connecticut, Indiana and Idaho also struggle with this word. So that you do not make this mistake, remember that your dessert should never be deserted in the desert. Our neighbors to the south in Arizona misspell ‘diarrhea’ the most. One wonders why this is the most misspelled word…I’m thinking lots of cases of food poisoning. Also, ‘neighbor’ is the top misspelled word by New Mexico (Arizona’s neighbor). As far as other notable misspellings, Alaskans spell ‘Hawaii’ poorly while Hawaiians misspell ‘boutonniere’ (who can spell this?). Texas and Nevada struggle with ‘niece’ while Maine, Montana, North Carolina and Wisconsin add an extra ‘c’ or miss a ‘u’ when spelling ‘vacuum’. DALE GRIBOW ON THE LAW

CONS AND SCAMS 101

T

here are many mays to get your money without taking it from you at gunpoint or breaking into your home while you are home. Most burglars are not violent. They want the same things you have and they find safe ways to steal and then pawn your former property to get money for drugs or other necessities. Thieves are creative as these scams suggest: LONG-TERM PARKING SCAM A thief breaks into a car left in an airport’s long-term parking and finds the car’s registration in the glove box. He then drives the car to the owner’s home uses the garage door opener to get in and robs it. GPS The same thing happens at a Dodger game or any other sports event with the same things stolen from the car including the garage door remote control, money and of course the GPS. The GPS leads them to the victim’s home where they use the remote to open the garage door. Knowing the owners are at a sporting event they feel comfortable taking their time to clean out the home and often bring a truck to steal everything. Thus you should not put your home address in the GPS. Instead use a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you

can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen. CELL PHONES After stealing a handbag the thief looks for the money and the cell where most of us list names and password. They then text “HUBBY”, with your phone, asking for Bank PIN number which allows the thief to clean out your bank account within minutes. SAFETY LESSON To be safe do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc. It is very important when sensitive info is being asked for through texts, that you CONFIRM by calling back. Of course it is a good idea when texted by friends or family requesting to meet them somewhere that you be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don’t reach them, be very careful about going places to meet “family and friends” who text you. PURSE IN THE GROCERY CART A thief steals your wallet out of your purse in the shopping cart. The owner reports the theft to the store and upon returning home, receives a phone call from the Store Security saying they had your wallet and that although there was no money in it, it did still hold her personal papers. When the owner goes to pick up the wallet she is told by Security that they had not called her. Meanwhile the home

had been broken into and burglarized. The thieves knew that by calling and saying they were Security, they could lure her out of her house long enough to burglarize it. CALLER CONS The caller claims to be an enforcement officer acting on behalf of the IRS, the Palm Springs Police or Riverside County Sheriffsometimes the caller ID may even confirm the same. Note that the IRS does not call you, they send letters. If this happens to you, call the IRS at 800-829-1040 or forward their emails to phishing@IRS. gov<mailto:phishing@IRS.gov>. The “City Official” or “Sheriff’s” Department may allege you missed Jury Duty and asks for money orders to correct

this. They you call back with the information on the back of the suggested money order that you are requested to purchase, or ask you for a prepaid debit card. Don’t do it! The caller may even threaten you with Arrest, Deportation or the Suspension of your Business License or Driver’s License. Hang up! BY BRUCE CATHCART REAL ESTATE SHOULD I BUY A HOME WITH OR WITHOUT A SWIMMING POOL?

S

ummer announced its arrival this past weekend as Saturday recorded 117 degrees as the high temperature here in our Coachella Valley. That’s a little warm for the first week of June. All I could think about was finishing up this article and then going outside and jumping into my swimming pool. When my wife and I started shopping for our first home here in the desert I was told it was a law that we had to have a swimming pool. We were newlyweds then and I have since learned that it wasn’t really a law in the legal sense, but it was just one of her many laws which I have dutifully obeyed for the past 40 years. Of course the only home we found that we could afford back then did not have a pool and so it took us a year or so before we could put one in ourselves (the cost back then was only $5,000.00!). Having spent a lifetime maintaining and enjoying my pool as well as selling homes with and without pools I believe that I am pretty well qualified to share some of the pros and cons on whether or not you should purchase a home with or without a swimming pool. But before I get to that good advice let’s do a quick check of last month’s sales numbers to see if the Coachella Valley is still keeping pace with last year’s sales. According to the Desert Area MLS (as of 06/01/16) there were 1092 pendings of residential properties here in the Coachella Valley in May. That’s up from the 1,039 pendings in the previous month (April) still showing good volume and representing a significant increase in terms of activity for May. In April there were 810 solds and in May we had 854 solds showing another month over month increase). Last year in May we sold only 828 homes representing a year over year increase in the actual number of homes that closed escrow in May of this year when compared to the same time last year. In summary, we had a slow start to 2016 as buyers seemed to be holding back either due to the crashing stock market or the hyper media attention given to the circus we call the primary elections for the POTUS, but we have had a strong finish to our “selling season” posting increased numbers in both pendings and sales. Our inventory of homes for sale was significantly reduced this month with only 4,906 homes available on May 31, 2016 compared to 5,575 homes available on May 1, 2016. That correction continues to bring our market back into balance continuing the trend from a buyer’s market back to a Seller’s market. While the combination of high pending sales and the reduction in available inventory suggests that we are headed back to a Seller’s market, this will require continued higher sales volume at the time of year that our sales typically fall off due to the summer heat. Our market seems to be doing a pretty good job of self-correcting and staying in balance these days. With interest rates staying at rock bottom it still a good time to be shopping for a home here in the

Coachella Valley. Obviously it costs more to buy a home with a pool than a similar home without one. But the costs don’t stop there. When considering whether or not to purchase a home with a pool you must consider the additional costs associated with maintaining and owning a pool. I gave up trying to maintain my own pool after only 3 months so you should assume that you will need a pool service to perform the weekly maintenance which runs anywhere from $80 to $125 a month for an average sized pool. Add to this your monthly power bill to run the pump and filter ($25 to $35) and water bill to keep the water level full (+/-$10). And don’t forget about the additional homeowner’s insurance premiums you will want to pay to provide adequate liability coverage (I recommend an “Umbrella Policy” in addition to your regular homeowner’s insurance policy for additional coverage). If you plan to swim in the winter you better include the cost to heat your pool and of course don’t forget about repairs to the pool and equipment over the course of your ownership. So is a pool worth the extra expense? Here in the Coachella Valley we live in one of the few places in the Country where we can actually use a swimming pool all year long. If you have children it can be the ultimate baby sitter in the summer… not to mention you will be the “cool house”. Yards with pools can also be quite beautiful providing attractive views and a central point to gather around while entertaining. Pools are a Selling Feature here in the desert as most buyers would like to have a pool, assuming they can afford one. Like all decisions, buying a home with a pool, assuming you can afford all of the costs associated with it, comes down to a personal choice. As always, your trusted professional Agent can help you with this decision! Personally, when I am paying the monthly service bill in December I might say it isn’t worth it… but on days like today I couldn’t live without one! ith summer upon us what is the best hair care procedure to protect our hair from sun damage and chlorinated pools? Maily: There are three different treatments that I recommend. First a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner that adapts to humidity and heat and moisturizers damaged hair. A protein shampoo and conditioner for over processed hair to heal the damaged hair. A keratin protein shampoo and conditioner will help to strengthen and add

shine to hair. A must for summer is using a good UV leave in protectant spray on your hair. What will be the hot colors/shades for summer? Maily: Medium blonde to lighter blondes with a lot of freehand painting with the color so the hair looks more sun kissed so it matches the bronzed, tanned skin tones. WILDFIRE FORECAST - BAD!

B

rush fires chewed through hillsides from San Diego to Ventura Counties and every county in between challenging firefighters and making hillside homeowners very nervous this weekend as a very hot and long brush fire season is now underway. California will face a dangerous and difficult wildfire season in 2016 despite a relatively wet winter. This five-year drought has left 40 million dead and dried-out trees in California, including 29 million that died last year alone. “This creates a tremendous hazard, potential hazard, for fires and firefighting this year reminds Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna.” An El Nino weather pattern brought nearnormal snowfall to parts of California last

winter, but we need much more rain and snow to recover fully from the drought. Additionally, the effects of drought will continue to kill California’s trees for at least three more years. Last year, wildfires burned a record 15,800 square miles. Seven Forest Service firefighters died and 4,500 homes were damaged or destroyed. California and other parts of the Southwest face an extremely dangerous threat. Firefighting consumed more than half the Forest Service budget last year, draining money from forest management and other programs. Fires will soon eat up two-thirds of the agency’s budget. FREE WILL ASTROLOGY

Week of June 9

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Mythologist Joseph Campbell analyzed fairy tales for clues about how the human psyche works. For example, he said that a fairy tale character who’s riding a horse is a representation of our relationship with our instinctual nature. If that character drops the reins and lets the horse gallop without guidance, he or she is symbolically surrendering control to the instincts. I bring this to your attention because I suspect you may soon be tempted to do just that that -- which wouldn’t be wise. In my opinion, you’ll be best served by going against the flow of what seems natural. Sublimation and transcendence will keep you much stronger than if you followed the line of least resistance. Homework: Visualize yourself, as you ride your horse, keeping a relaxed but firm grasp of the reins. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): I will provide you with two lists of words. One of these lists, but not both, will characterize the nature of your predominant experiences in the coming weeks. It will be mostly up to you which emerges as the winner. Now read the two lists, pick the one you like better, and instruct your subconscious mind to lead you in that direction. List 1: gluttony, bloating, overkill, padding, exorbitance. List 2: mother lode, wellspring, bumper crop, gold mine, cornucopia. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In his poem “Interrupted Meditation,” Robert Hass blurts out the following exclamation: “I give you, here, now, a magic key. What does it open? This key I give you, what exactly does it open?” How would you answer this question, Gemini? What door or lock or heart or treasure box do you most need opened? Decide today. And please don’t name five things you need opened. Choose one, and one only. To do so will dissolve a mental block that has up until now kept you from finding the REAL magic key. CANCER (June 21-July 22): The following excerpt from Wendell Berry’s poem “Woods” captures the essence of your current situation: “I part the out-thrusting branches and come in beneath the blessed and the blessing trees. Though I am silent there is singing around me. Though I am dark there is vision around me. Though I am heavy there is flight around me.” Please remember this poem at least three times a day during the next two weeks. It’s important for you to know that no matter what murky or maudlin or mysterious mood you might be in, you are surrounded by vitality and generosity. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): A half-dead blast from the past is throttling the free flow of your imagination. Your best possible future will be postponed until you agree to deal more intimately with this crumbled dream, which you have never fully grieved or surrendered. So here’s my advice: Summon the bravest, smartest love you’re capable of, and lay your sad loss to rest with gentle ferocity. This may take a while, so be patient. Be inspired by the fact that your new supply of brave, smart love will be a crucial resource for the rest of your long life. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Five times every day, devout Muslims face their holiest city, Mecca, and say prayers to Allah. Even if you’re not Islamic, I recommend that you carry out your own unique version of this ritual. The next three weeks will be a favorable time to cultivate a closer relationship with the inspirational influence, the high ideal, or the divine being that reigns supreme in your life. Here’s how you could do it: Identify a place that excites your imagination and provokes a sense of wonder. Five times a day for the next 21 days, bow in the direction of this treasured spot. Unleash songs, vows, and celebratory expostulations that deepen your fierce and tender commitment to what you trust most and love best. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “The road reaches every place, the short cut only one,” says aphorist James Richardson. In many cases, that’s not a problem. Who among us has unlimited time and energy? Why leave all the options open? Short cuts can be valuable. It’s often smart to be ruthlessly

efficient as we head toward our destination. But here’s a caveat: According to my analysis of the astrological omens, you’re now in a phase when taking short cuts may be counterproductive. To be as well-seasoned as you will need to be to reach your goal, you should probably take the scenic route. The long way around may, in this instance, be the most efficient and effective. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “Truth is like the flu,” says poet James Richardson. “I fight it off, but it changes in other bodies and returns in a form to which I am not immune.” In the coming days, Scorpio, I suspect you will experience that riddle first hand -- and probably on more than one occasion. Obvious secrets and wild understandings that you have fought against finding out will mutate in just the right way to sneak past your defenses. Unwelcome insights you’ve been trying to ignore will finally wiggle their way into your psyche. Don’t worry, though. These new arrivals will be turn out to be good medicine. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): According to Guinness World records, the most consecutive hours spent riding on a roller coaster is 405 hours and 40 minutes. But I suspect that during the next 15 months, a Sagittarian daredevil may exceed this mark. I have come to this conclusion because I believe your tribe will be especially adept and relatively comfortable at handling steep rises and sudden dips at high speeds. And that won’t be the only rough talent you’ll have in abundance. I’m guessing you could also set new personal bests in the categories of most frequent changes of mind, most heroic leaps of faith, and fastest talking. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Whether we like to admit it or not, all of us have acted like puppets. Bosses and teachers and loved ones can manipulate us even if they’re not in our presence. Our conditioned responses and programmed impulses may control our behavior in the present moment even though they were formed long ago. That’s the bad news. The good news is that now and then moments of lucidity blossom, revealing the puppet strings. We emerge from our unconsciousness and see that we’re under the spell of influential people to whom we have surrendered our power. This is one of those magic times for you, Capricorn. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): A few weeks ago you undertook a new course of study in the art of fun and games. You realized you hadn’t been playing hard enough, and took measures to correct the problem. After refamiliarizing yourself with the mysteries of innocent joy, you raised the stakes. You began dabbling with more intensive forms of relief and release. Now you have the chance to go even further: to explore the mysteries of experimental delight. Exuberant escapades may become available to you. Amorous adventures could invite you to explore the frontiers of liberated love. Will you be brave and free enough to meet the challenge of such deeply meaningful gaiety? Meditate on this radical possibility: spiritually adept hedonism. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Poet Sharon Dolin compares artists to sunflowers. They create “a tall flashy flower that then grows heavy with seeds whose small hard shells you must crack to get to the rich nut meat.” As I contemplate the current chapter of your unfolding story, I see you as being engaged in a similar process, even if you’re not literally an artist. To be exact, you’re at the point when you are producing a tall flashy flower. The seeds have not yet begun to form, but they will soon. Later this year, the rich nut meat inside the small hard shells will be ready to pluck. For now, concentrate on generating your gorgeous, radiant flower. Homework: Psychologists say that a good way to eliminate a bad habit is to replace it with a good one. Do that! THAT IS DEFINITELY NOT CLUTTER, IS IT? Dear Jenny, I recently had a friend come over to my house. I invited her in and watched as she looked around my home and then told me she would wait for me outside. It was the strangest thing! When I later asked what the problem was and why she left my home in such a hurry, she replied, “all that clutter makes me uncomfortable.” I honestly don’t think I have clutter. I have a cute house and great accessories inside. I don’t have paper and trash lying around. But my place is full of wonderful memorabilia. Everything that I display has a meaning to me. That is definitely not clutter, is it? What do you think? What’s the fine line between clutter and having your home nicely decorated? Thanks, Catherine ----------------------------------------Hi Catherine, Yep, clutter can be a big problem. A common misconception about clutter is that if it’s not garbage and we could use it, someday, it’s not clutter. But sadly, that’s not the case. Clutter comes in all shapes and sizes. The easiest way for me to describe it to you is, if there is anything around your home, or place of business, that takes up space, it’s clutter. You may use something and choose to display it, that’s fine, but please, know, it is clutter. Simply put, clutter gets in the way of free flowing chi, which is moving, living energy. The reason that clutter has such a bad rap (rightfully so) is because it is responsible for taking our living energy and holding it in one place, becoming stagnate. Once energy become stagnate it breads more stagnate energy. Pretty soon, everything in that space is not moving. Then the inhabitants become depressed, sad, lazy, I could go on! When depression is involved, it can consume a person. Depression makes it literally impossible for creativity to come into the picture. In other words, if a person is depressed and they are expecting to have a grand idea, to bring them out of the depression, it won’t happen. You must first, get rid of the depression. Be willing to release it then start letting in the creativity and seeing things in a new light! We all have clutter in our lives, but let’s try to keep it to a minim.

The following pointers may help you rid yourself of clutter in your home or place of work: Take a walk from room to room and make a mental note on what clutter you see and what you would like to clear. If you have not used something in the last year or especially two years, and you don’t absolutely love it, then it is probably time to let it go on its way. Make the decision to clear out at least one drawer. Try not to overwhelm yourself by intending to clear your whole house or whole room at once. Most people find that after clearing out one drawer, they feel pretty good and liberated and decide to do another. You can clear your whole house, small segments at a time. While you are sorting out what you want to keep and what you want to throw away, ask yourself the prominent question, “What does this do for me? Does it lift my energy or does my energy drop when I think about it or even look at it?” Clearing clutter is about letting go and trusting the process of life to bring you what you need rather than keeping things, “just in case.” Realize that everything you own has a hold on your attention. The more clutter you have, the more your energy is tied up in mundane matters. When your home is filled with objects that you love, it becomes an incredible source of nourishment for you. Your environment actually supports you. Possessions you love have a strong, vibrant energy around them. Belongings that are unwanted have uneasy, conflicting energies attached to them, and that drains you rather than energizes you. - ❤, Jenny Don’t forget to follow Jenny at www. askjennynow.com, find her on facebook or contact her at 760-505-0952

IT’S HEATING UP..

W

e’ve had a pretty mild April and May, but the heat is coming. By the time you are reading this article it will probably be over 100 degrees. It’s that time of year again to talk about heat related injuries. Second Degree Burns This type of burn causes significant skin damage and forms blisters. I have treated several cases of second degree burns to the feet in my practice. This injury commonly occurs when a person is walking barefoot outside on the grass and then will walk onto the hot pavement. Another common scenario is when a person is barefoot in the house and just “stepped out to get the mail”. Hot asphalt or pavement can reach temperatures of up to 140 degrees and can instantly burn the skin in just a few seconds. Severe burns of the skin require medical attention, so do not take any chances and protect your feet! Wear shoes, slippers, flip flops, etc…. I have also seen contact burns on the hands from car door handles and outside door handles on a store. You have to constantly be aware that our desert sun during the summer not only raises the outside temperature but also heats many outdoor surfaces we commonly come in contact with. I usually recommend carrying a small towel or handkerchief with you to open metal door handles, or else use a piece of your clothing. Hydration I have mentioned the importance of adequate hydration in previous articles. Poor fluid intake, especially in the summer heat, increases one’s chance of dehydration. A person can be dehydrated without feeling thirsty, so it is important to drink water throughout the day and especially if outdoors. A good gauge to assess hydration status is the color of your urine; the clearer your urine the better, dark urine is a sign of poor hydration

24

status. Coffee, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages don’t count as good fluid intake because they actually cause dehydration. Heat Cramps, Heat Exhaustion & Heat Stroke Poor hydration habits along with prolonged exposure to heat and humidity can cause different types of heat related illness. For all these illnesses, treatment should include a cool place, rest and proper hydration with water or sports drinks. Heat Cramps are the mildest form of heat injury and present as very painful and severe muscle cramps and spasms. Stretch cramped muscles slowly. Heat Exhaustion is more severe and can include nausea, vomiting, headache, weakness, pale and moist skin and fever. One should remove excess clothing and place cool clothes on the skin. If the symptoms don’t resolve, then medical attention with IV hydration may be needed or else the condition can progress to heat stroke. Heat Stroke is the most severe form of heat illness. It has the symptoms of heat cramps and heat exhaustion but includes neurological signs and symptoms of confusion or agitation and possibly seizures or coma. The skin in heat stroke is warm and dry. Heat stroke is a life threatening emergency and requires immediate medical attention. All of these conditions are preventable. Do not take our desert environment for granted.

ver find yourself caught up in a web of worry? If you answered yes, you’re normal. We all exhibit Nervous Nellie traits at times. On the plus side, experts point out there is such a thing as healthy worry. Negative thoughts about future events can cause us to address problems and create action plans to resolve what troubles us. A major difference exists between problem solving and worry. Ruminating in self- talk about what could happen or what might go wrong is far from constructive. The same holds true for dwelling on past hurts. Participating in this type of excessive behavior will eventually impact your health. In his book, “Worry,” Edward M. Hallowell, M.D. warns that “excessive worry can make you physically sick; it can kill you.” Equating it to blood pressure Dr. Hallowell says you need a certain level to live, but too high a level is debilitating. Although no central off-switch exits to break the cycle of obsessive negative thoughts, there are techniques to help from over-thinking. Keep the worry gremlins from camping out in your brain by utilizing available techniques. My sometimes go-to is one I learned in a Dale Carnegie course years ago. Ask yourself what is the worst-case scenario and follow up with how you would handle it. Most of the time the worst case never

materializes, but if it does we are resilient. On a day-to-day basis I coach folks whose biggest worry was realized. They lost their job in a downsizing. Bottom line, they find employment and reflect back on incessant worry as colossal waste of precious time. Design a plan to cope with your largest concern and then move on. You can put an end to wasting time by pulling out your cell phone. I call it the timeit-out technique. Grant yourself ten minutes to reflect on your problem. Ruminate away, when the buzzer sounds you’re done. Switch gears and get busy cleaning out your garage or head off to the gym. If you are a visual person, try the bouncer method invented by a friend of mine. She sees her nagging problem as getting to the front of the line behind the velvet ropes and being confronted by a big, burly bouncer. He says, “Ms. Worry your name is not on the list and you are prohibited from entering.” Next time a quandary causes anxiety, reflect on a famous Bombeck quote: “Worry is like a rocking chair; it gives you something to do but never gets you anywhere.” Kick your rocker to the curb and take action.
