his summer’s upcoming Comic Con Palm Springs, occurring August 25-27, is quickly becoming one of Coachella Valley’s most anticipated events.

With over 15,000 attendees last year, Founder/Executive Producer Christopher Spellman believes that the event has a positive impact on the local economy and talks about efforts they are making to form partnerships with local business and organizations.

One of the non-profits is Boo2Bullying, an organization that “provides outreach, education, mentoring, inspiration and support for youth and their families.”

Spellman hopes that CCPS can help raise awareness to the issue and is looking forward to coming alongside Boo2Bullying to bring much needed attention to a worthy cause.

Comic Con Palm Springs is also working with the Palm Springs International Animation Festival (PSIAF), a new event that will occur November 11, 2017. “There’s a natural tie-in with comic books and graphic novels and animation...and pop culture and things like voice over actors… it’s a natural fit,” Spellman says. “We are going to be screening one or more of their movies.” You can find more information on Palm Springs International Animation Festival at www. psiaf.org.

Other nonprofit’s that CCPS is proud to be working with is Desert Arc, a Palm Desert based non-profit organization that provides “opportunities for people with disabilities” and The Boys and Girls Club of Palm Springs where Director Andrea Madrigal will once again get the kids there involved in volunteering for the event.

“When she and I spoke this year, she let me know that the kids were excited already to volunteer and help out,” Spellman says. The kids will be tasked with going to businesses in downtown Palm Springs to pass out fliers and ask if the businesses will hang posters.

Volunteers are also being accepted for the event itself. “Volunteers are the most important piece to the puzzle of the operation. We’re going to be working with both Edwards Air Force Base as well as Twentynine Palms Marine Base, and local volunteers from around the valley.”

Spellman notes that one volunteer, Karen Ann Porter, was such an integral part in last year’s success that we made her the Volunteer Coordinator.

“What we did last year and what we want to do every year is make sure that our Downtown Palm Springs businesses do well” Spellman says. “It’s the time of year when the Coachella Valley is just not as busy and it effects everyone. There are a lot of people who are just out in the community for an event like ours and they are staying and visiting, even if they’re local. When they come to Palm Springs to spend time at the event their dollars are making a difference to even the smallest of stores, whether they’re spending the evening downtown shopping or at a restaurant, it all helps.

We are looking at some of the moves that we’re making and how that has an economic impact.” Spellman wants people to see the event as a three-day festival, saying that he wants visitors to see CCPS as a complete experience. “If we can get them to stay for one or three days… check into a hotel or just go out to eat, that’s what we hope to do.

Every little bit affects the local economy and local businesses.”

Comic Con Palm Springs recently partnered with Blaze Pizza. Both the Palm Desert and Palm Springs stores will be providing promotional codes for discounted tickets to CCPS with every purchase. Other restaurants, like Lulu’s, has their employees wear Comic Con Palm Springs t-shirts preceding the event. “Our goal is to keep the Coachella Valley thriving and as such we try to keep all our business needs with local companies like RSP Productions who will be taking care of all our staging and production needs and Canyon Copy and Print who currently handles all of our printing needs.”

Comic Con Palm Springs will also feature Coachella Valley resident Lindsay Wagner, notable for her portrayal of the Bionic Woman television series. Tickets to the event and an application to volunteer can be found at ComicConPalmSprings.com.

he greatest things about the PS ShortFest are the sweet gems that are embedded in the thematic clusters of wide-ranging film programs.

No matter what film program you choose, It’s hard to imagine there won’t be at least one film that delights and diverts.

If you are reading this in print or online on or before Thursday June 21, all the films listed here are worthy of your time and still can be seen. Last minute tickets are often available at the Camelot box office. Also, look for more repeat programming at the best of fest event scheduled at the close of the ShortFest.

Trump via average Russians praising and patronizing Trump as a synthetic, but welcome ideological figure on the world stage. Or that’s what I got from this unsettling and funny farce of a film. Among the best of the fest.

AN IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE – PSISF: VR LOUNGE

n the hall, just outside a nondescript room in a hotel’s convention area is a line of people, which if you had to guess what they were all waiting for could never be answered just by their cumulative looks. Young, old, hipsters, nerds, some tattooed and others in golf shirts, they share at least one thing as they patiently wait along the rope -- curiosity about virtual reality.

Glance within the partitioned room and it appears the people are in some sort of bizarre trance. Equipped with headset goggles and earphones, men and women quietly stare off into space, reach for things no one else can see and twist around in their seats --lost to another world.

This is the Palm Springs International ShortFest VR Lounge where the latest in film technology immerses the viewer in the setting and action in what can only be described as an alternate reality.

The clarity of the images and sounds is so vivid the user is absorbed into the environment.

No matter where the viewer looks – up, down, or around -- there is a phenomenal, cohesive world!

“Virtual Reality has taken storytelling by storm,” said Lili Rodriguez, Director, Palm Springs International ShortFest. “This festival really champions short form and we want our general audience to be able to experience all the great things happening out there.”

The VR Lounge is a community event free to the public! For two days during the ShortFest, Thursday and Friday, June 22 and 23 from 11:00am to 7:00pm at the Riviera Resort & Spa, there is an opportunity to partake in the cuttingedge technology revolutionizing filmmaking, animation and gaming.

The University of California, Riverside teamed up with the ShortFest to bring this incredible and unique experience to the CV.

“The VR Lounge is the result of an ongoing partnership UCR has with the PSIFF and ShortFest to provide free, year-round, community-based arts programming centered around their amazing festivals,” said Tod Goldberg, Administrative Director, Low Residency MFA in Creative Writing & Writing for the Performing Arts, University of California, Riverside.

At last year’s ShortFest, UCR sponsored Tech Day, which included a small VR experience, several panels and discussions, which focused on technology and social justice. The event was exclusive for festival ticket holders.

“This year, we wanted to expand that footprint by letting the community see what the future was about to look like,” said Goldberg. “So in collaboration with the great programming staff at ShortFest, we have sponsored the Virtual Reality Lounge, and made it free and open to the public.”

Rodriguez and her team had the task of selecting the VR line-up.

“There is certainly a lot of content so it was a task narrowing it down, but we opted to give people a variety of experiences,” said Rodriguez.

The VR Lounge offers four different short virtual reality encounters. The four shorts are separate viewing options.

Women on the Move - Documentary - Set in rural Niger, a grandmother’s life changes when she joins a women’s savings group to help her granddaughter take the next step out of poverty.

Pearl – Animation - A girl and her dad crisscross the country in a hatchback chasing their dreams.

Sonar – Narrative - When a drone discovers an unknown asteroid, it receives a strange signal. To locate its source, the drone ventures deep into an ancient labyrinth -- a place that holds a secret even darker than space itself.

There is a lot of demand for storytellers in the field, and we want to make sure that our filmmakers know it›s an option!” said Rodriguez. “It›s also just amazing to see how the technology has advanced. And, of course, we want people to have fun!”

he former Palm Springs retreat of the legendary silent film comedian Harold Lloyd can now be rented for the first time for retreats, vacations and special events. The interiors are glamorous yet quaint and charming at the same time. Entering through ornate doors into a spacious area guests will find intricately hand painted wood beams and hand carved wood décor throughout the house, while featuring the original terracotta tile flooring and colorful art deco bathroom tiles in the unique hisand-hers bathroom off the master suite.

There is also an incredible 1,000-bottle wine cellar and tasting room located in the

basement via a gorgeous spiral staircase that had to be installed by a crane from atop.

he Joshua Tree Improv/Comedy Festival takes place July 7-9, 2017 at the Hi Desert Cultural Center, 61231 Highway 62, in Joshua Tree (just 1/2 mile from the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.)

Improv teams, sketch comedy groups and stand-up comics will perform and compete.

Audience voting determines winners.

A Friday night gala at 6:30PM will kick off the weekend with the performance, “You Make Me Laugh: A Love Song To Gilda Radner,” which is performed by the multitalented actress/cabaret singer Francesca Amari. Saturday evening entertainment includes “The Very Nick and Zach Show,” an audience favorite from last year’s festival, and a world premiere performance by Melanie Chartoff, who starred and wrote for ABC’s late night comedy show, Fridays, alongside Larry David and Michael Richards.

Chartoff also had starring and recurring roles on The Newhart Show, Married with Children, Seinfeld, Wise Guy, Allie McBeal, and Parker Lewis Can’t Lose.

eth Lapides, affectionately (and accurately) known as the High Priestess of Alternative Comedy, brings her vanguard comedy and music show UnCabaret back to the Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs on Saturday, June 24, after a sold-out event there last fall.

The return presentation features comedians Greg Behrendt (“Conan,” “Sex and the City,” “He’s Just Not That Into You”), Baron Vaughn (“Grace and Frankie,” “Mystery Science Theater 3000”) and Julie Goldman (“Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “The Big Gay Sketch Show”), whose outrageous storytelling had last November’s Ace Hotel crowd rolling

Beth carved a space in L.A. over 20 years ago for transcendence and meaning in comedy, and some of the most visionary, ruthless and illuminated comics have cut their teeth on her UnCabaret stage — Jon Stewart, Sarah Silverman, Roseanne Barr, Sandra Bernhard, Carrie Fisher and Bill Maher, to name a few.

She was recently seen in the CNN documentary series “The History of Comedy.”

Beth, in fact, is a former Palm Springs resident and frequent desert visitor, and she is filled with great, funny observations about living in the Coachella Valley — which she’ll share again as host when she returns to the Ace. She’s a one-woman band who does all her own bookings and joke-writing and doesn’t have a professional publicist. Beyond that, she is a very cool, smart and independent woman who’s also happy to talk generally about world we live in.

Together, they gave us access to music lessons, sheet music, instrument repair. guitars, ukuleles, drums & percussion, brass/woodwind & strings, amplifiers, microphones, and everything under the musical sun.

We lost Randy on April 22, 2016 and along with his loss came the ambitious task of keeping Musicians Outlet alive and thriving. Cindy has done her best to secure her and Randy’s life’s work and now we honor all that the Hewitson’s and Musicians Outlet have done to better our lives through music.

Musicians Outlet has consistently been involved with the community. They have donated their time and services to fundraisers, festivals and churches. They have worked with virtually every venue and major event in the desert as well as provided support to every musician and band that has called upon them.

They always went above and beyond the call of duty in whatever capacity they were involved.

Ultimately, the legacy left by Musicians Outlet is intact. The story of this small business is that of resiliency. In an age where typically 50 to 70 percent of all small businesses fail within the first 18 months, Musicians Outlet has withstood the test of time, almost 32 years! When Guitar Center in Palm Desert opened, Musicians Outlet was supposed to go belly up. When the store burned in 2015 it was not supposed to re-open after losing hundreds of thousands of dollars in merchandise. There are many instances where

Musicians Outlet should not have succeeded and did.

The Coachella Valley will lose its only full-line independent music store this week. What we’ve gained cannot be measured and will carry on in the music of the desert’s musicians forever.

Wednesday, June 21, 2017 is ‘Make Music Day,’ a one-day event where free, live musical performances, opportunities to make music and other musical events take place around the world on the longest day of the year. I encourage everyone who is compelled, to make music in honor of the Hewitson’s and Musicians Outlet.

Ronnie King: “Many years ago I just got off a tour and cartage broke my keyboard. I had a session scheduled here in the desert. I called Randy and told him of my situation and of course he said, “Come get whatever keyboards you need from the store.” I took them right off the showroom floor. That’s who he was.”

John Stanley King: “I recall many private late night conversations in a building with hundreds of instruments; just walking around tapping on things and listening to different instruments. It was pretty cool.”

Steve Hall: “I was in a band with Randy called ‘Rumors’. We rehearsed at night in the store for years. I’ll never forget it.”

CHILL MAGNET, “SURF CHICA BONITA”

hill Magnet of Desert Hot Springs gave me an early release of their new LP Surf Chica Bonita. I was surprised by this album, it’s almost new wave, but then it’s not. It’s almost rock, but then it’s not. I just wanted to dance.

Returning to their core of two members, Chill Magnet is proud to feature TomTom Murray as lead vocals, bass guitar, and keys alongside producer Randy Banis on lead guitar. The LP to be released by SRRecords on June 30th, starts off with a soundscape that most who have experienced the ocean know—foghorns and waves. A chilling resonant sound sets in, distorting the listener’s experience and solidifying that this is going to be one hell of a summer.

begins urging the listener to “dance with the devil one more day.” Any long time listener of Chill Magnet will acknowledge the musical evolution from their EP and singles off of Gringo Mariachi.

Expect to hear a mix of electronic beats, maracas, and lyrics about love found, love lost, and love ignored as heard on their first single off the LP, “Girl on a Wire,” which shares influences from Oasis and Blur mixed with Chill Magnet’s very own “electronic dance rock” feel.

“Breath Away” is one of my personal favorites from the LP. Starting with a crescendo of experimental beats leading to the following deliberate ambient synth, Chill Magnet channels an earlier new wave sound.

TomTom’s vocals share a surprise as his voice suddenly soaks in influence from Robert Smith of The Cure, and Bernard Summer of early New Order. Strings throughout the

hook add emotion to the lyrics “You take my breath away” being repeated.

Chill Magnet’s goal with Surf Chica Bonita was to create a mature and experimental album with a surf and psychedelic feeling to it. Chill Magnet is proud to be pioneering the genre “electronic dance rock.” The lyrics penned by TomTom share the desire of not wanting summer to end, making it the perfect soundtrack for summer of 2017.

“Come on Over” cements the seasonal feelings with whimsical vocals featuring guest vocalist Claire Dore, alluring synths, and deep bass riffs. Randy’s guitar plays the extremes during this song. The lyrics encourage escapism, intimacy, and connection ending with “When it’s over/I will love your wicked mind/So come on over.”

With a different feel from the LP, “Vampire” introduces itself with a heavy bass line and distortion, followed by TomTom’s

vocals. As the turning point of the album, “Vampire” incorporates a solid driving drum beat by guest drummer Caleb Householder.

As the only song on the album with an explicit, “Vampire” paves the way for the second half of the album with lyrics like “Did you ever really mean what you said/Now I want to rip out my soul” reminding us that summer is ending, connections are fragmented, and soon the swimsuits will be put back into the closet.

The second half proves to the listener that this LP has its very own electronic dance rock opera storyline to it, starting us off at the beginning of summer with new prospects for friendships and love and then riddling us with the remorse, loss, and eventual acceptance of the seasons changing and leaving behind the memories of summer.

As the LP comes to an end we find “Rip It Up,” a heavy punk rock song with a driving drum beat. TomTom’s vocals become rough, harsh, and pissed. The intensity of the song continues into the end of the album with the title song “Surf Chica Bonita” the apex of the storyline is revealed in the first verse.

TomTom tightly croons, “I saw you surfing with some other guy/A broken prince in exile/I paddle out to sea just to die…”

ith sales of over 60 million albums worldwide, Alanis Morissette is one of the most influential singer-songwriter-musicians in contemporary music. WHAT A WEEK IT HAS BEEN IN SLIM LAND

I

was in Nashville doing interviews for the Hobnobbin’ with Slim Man podcast. The podcast launches July 3rd, and the pitch is “Conversations with people on both sides of the show biz curtain.”

After Nashville, I flew to my hometown of Baltimore for a few shows, and to sing the Star-Spangled Banner at Camden Yards for the Baltimore Orioles baseball team. What an honor!

The next day, I flew back to Palm Springs, California, and then drove to San Diego, where I rehearsed with an 18-piece big band for a Rat Pack show I’m doing at the Bernardo Winery on August 27th. What a blast it is to sing with a band that big and bold!

The next day, I drove back to Palm Springs.

I couldn’t help but notice all the billboards.

There were the usual suspects, billboards for fast food restaurants and real estate. And then there were lots of billboards for concerts at the casinos.

What an amazing variety of acts. Chris Rock, Lionel Richie, Ziggy Marley, the Doobie Brothers, CHIC, Garbage, Tom Jones, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Styx, Johnny Mathis, Joe Bonamassa, Van Morrison, and even Sophia Loren. Lots of billboards touting lots of artists, all headed to Palm Springs.

But, there were two billboards that got me thinking--which is dangerous because of my malady, Attention Surplus Syndrome. You know the acronym. I think about things for too long.

One billboard that got my attention was the Second Amendment Store. I thought that maybe it was some kind of political place where people could debate the Constitutional Amendments.

No. It was a place where they sold guns and ammo and had a firing range. Now, before you fire off that angry email, I’m not condemning or condoning. I’m just reporting.

Here is what I started thinking...why stop at a Second Amendment Store? Why not have a mall, a big mall where they could have stores for all 27 Constitutional Amendments?

The store for the first amendment, the one that guarantees free speech, could have megaphones and microphones and PA systems.

They could have a free speech range, so to

speak. People could go there and yell at each other all day long.

The Constitutional Amendment Mall could be a big hit, I tell ya! Well, maybe the 13th amendment, the one that abolished slavery, I’m not sure what you could do in that store.

And the 18th amendment, the one that banned alcohol, that wouldn’t be any fun.

But the 21st Amendment Store would be a blast! That’s the amendment that repealed the 18th amendment. Party time! They could serve shots, have beer and wine. Maybe combine the 21st Amendment Store with the Second Amendment Store! Guns and alcohol, together in the same place!

What fun.

The last billboard that caught my eye was an advertisement for Gay Emojis. If you’re still using a flip-phone, you might not know what emojis are. The original emoji was a yellow circle with a smiley face.

It had the caption “Have a Nice Day” underneath. Since then, there have been so many emojis that it will make your eyes roll.

And now there are gay emojis. Which I think is great. Why not? But why stop at gay emojis? I think we should keep the trend going and growing. I’m thinking we could have Mafia Emojis. Have an image of a guy with cement shoes, something you could send when you’re really angry with somebody.

They already have African-American emojis, and Latino emojis. Why not start some ItalianAmerican emojis? Have an image of spaghetti and meatballs to indicate it’s time to eat. Or have an image of an Italian guy shrugging his shoulders to let someone know you’re confused.

Or have an emoji of a woman with a moustache to send to your girlfriend to let her know to stop mothering you. Or an emoji of Sophia Loren to let your partner know it’s sexy time!

How about a Slim Man emoji? Send it to someone who needs to lighten up and brighten up.

adio R&B legend Art Laboe hosted a great party at the Aqua Caliente showroom Saturday with the Summer Love Jam. Producer Dale Berger invited us backstage in Art’s dressing room.

What an honor and so much fun hanging with this 92 ball of energy. He even hopped on the lap of one of the fans in a wheel chair and road it onstage!

The show started with super group ZAPP, great dance moves and dance music followed by MC Magic, A Lighter Shade of Brown and Midnight Star.

there in the ring learnin’ how to kick some ass/I was done at 16 usin’ my momma’s key, it was all on me, yes it was all on me.”

That’s Ani DiFranco getting up close and personal on “Play God,” a song off her new album, Binary. But that’s nothing new for an artist who has worn her heart (and her politics), on her sleeve since she began performing music nearly three decades ago.

Born in 1970, Ani grew up quickly in Buffalo, New York. As her parents’ marriage was coming apart at the seams, she gained solace from creating music. Encouraged by her guitar teacher, Mike Meldrum, she played her first gig at age nine. Soon after, she was busking on street corners and playing in bars, chaperoned by Mike.

Initially, her repertoire was primarily Beatles covers, but soon she began writing her own songs. She became an emancipated minor before her 16th birthday. Within a couple of years, she had relocated to New York City, intent on a music career.

Ani sharpened her skills in coffee houses, neighborhood bars and women’s centers. As her fan base grew, she was inundated with requests for tapes of her songs. She recorded a self-titled demo and the original run of 500 quickly sold out. She partnered with hometown friend and mentor, Scott Fisher (who is also a lawyer), and in 1990 founded her own label, Righteous Babe.

Throughout the early ‘90s, Ani toured the country in her VW Bug, her only companions were her acoustic guitar and a growing arsenal of songs. With her shaved head, tattoos and piercings, she was a target for rednecks and bigoted cops, (a topic she fully documents in the song “Every State Line”), but she persevered.

Her music was a sui generis combination of Punk and Folk. Whether she was dissecting failed romantic relationships, openly discussing her bisexuality or offering barbed social commentary, her highly personalized lyrics completely resonated with the young audiences that populated her shows.

The mainstream media began to pay attention. The Los Angeles and New York Times spotlighted her growing popularity and singular independence. She was celebrated in the pages of Rolling Stone and Ms. Magazine, and graced the covers of Spin and Musician. Major labels attempted to woo Ani, but she preferred the freedom (and higher profit margin) that

Righteous Babe afforded her.

Although she was at her best performing live, with each successive album, Ani’s songwriting prowess grew in leaps and bounds. With her fifth effort, Out Of Range, she began a streak of watershed Efforts that included Dilate, (which chronicled a doomed affair with a married man), and Living In Clip, a two CD set that highlighted her charismatic live style. Her eighth album, Little Plastic Castle addressed the strict expectations she experienced with her newfound fame.

At the turn of the century, Ani wasn’t partying like it was 1999, she was touring nonstop, and releasing two albums, Up,Up,Up and To The Teeth, practically back-to-back. She also found time to collaborate with artists like Maceo Parker (formerly of James Brown’s JB’s), U. Utah Phillips and Prince.

As the new millennium dawned, she released the double album Revelling/Reckoning, a chronicle of her marriage (and subsequent divorce) from the married man she had obsessed over in Dilate. Based out of Ani’s hometown, Buffalo, Righteous Babe had become a formidable indie. Her own music was selling well enough to allow the label to sign other acts. They even saved a historic downtown church from the wrecking ball. After they bought the building, RBR painstakingly restored it, and by mid-decade it had become label headquarters and housed the performance space, Babeville.

Ani continued to release music at a furious clip. Another live album, 2002’s So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter, featured the Lil Folksinger with a full band, she quickly followed up with largely acoustic efforts, Evolve in 2003 and Educated Guess in 2004. The next year she partnered with musician/producer Joe Henry and created one of her most enduring albums, Knuckle Down, which explored her newfound romantic relationship With engineer/producer, Mike Napolitano.

Not long after she completed the Knuckle Down tour and the release of Reprieve in 2006, Ani was sidelined with a serious case of Tendonitis. Unable to play guitar or tour for nine months, she finally slowed down…and became pregnant.

Ani and Mike welcomed their daughter, Petah, at the beginning of 2007. Two years later they were married. Ani continued to tour and record sporadically. Red Letter Year arrived in 2008, ? Which Side Are You On? was released in 2012. The following year was devoted to the arrival of Ani and Mike’s son, Dante, and in 2014 she released Allergic To Water. She has now returned with her 20th studio album, Binary.

The album gets off to a rollicking start with the title track, a socially conscious and erudite diatribe cloaked in a frenetic Funk workout.

Over a stuttery kick-drum beat, slithery organ flourishes, spiky guitars and squiggly sax fills, Ani spits out a political call to arms with rat-a-tat precision.

Surveying this country’s divisive climate she is anxious but eloquent; “In the blue glow of gizmos lurk despots in diapers, and cyborgs with bull horns and crackpots and snipers/Like robots so cold with such ease they dismiss you, sooner fuck you than kiss you, sooner kick you and diss you.” Finally she asks “Where are my brothers, where are my sisters, where are my family who take care of each other?”

Ani’s last album felt like a reaction to her prolonged period of nesting with her husband and children, clearly the new record was inspired by the recent Presidential election, which dealt a series of body blows to the progressive agenda.

On three tracks she plants herself in the turbulent combat zone of the current culture wars.

“Alrighty” is powered by akimbo percussion, angular guitars and modal violin accents. Ani gently points out the illogical inconsistencies in believing in a patriarchal diety; “Alrighty, for what it’s worth, next time I watch a man give birth, I’ll try and picture the creator as a dude with a beard/Cuz right now I gotta say it’s seeming kind of weird.” She also takes organized religion to task; “See how quickly shit gets absurd, you invent angels then you ignore birds/You forget to actually listen to the messengers while you’re writing and reciting your own goddamn words.”

The arrangement on the aforementioned “Play God” blends jumped-up Blues with a Funkified undertow. Swiveling bass lines switch and sway under sputtery guitar, billowy horns and tinkly piano. As usual, her lyrics are wildly autobiographical, declaring only women should be in charge of their bodies; “I pay the price on top of everything, each month a bill each month a reckoning/And each seed that dies, I cry and I bleed, so you can’t tell me.”

Finally, “The Pacifist’s Lament” make’s its point in a gentler fashion. An elegiac melody is cushioned by splayed guitar notes, rippling keys, an ebb and flow horn section and a vampy rhythm that thwoks in ¾ time. The lyrics are a quiet cri de couer that rails against the violence that pervades our culture. She notes “there is nothing harder than to stop in the middle of a battle and say you’re sorry/ But we ask it of our children to just stop in the middle of a battle and say you’re sorry.” Then she plaintively asks “Which one of us is ready to just stop?”

On two tracks, “Zizzing” and “Terrifying Sight,” Ani gets vocal assists from some well-known friends. The former features Jason Vernon (a.k.a. indie Folk savant, Bon Iver) adding his hushed tones to primitive off-kilter percussion, skittering violin runs and searching guitar chords. Here the lyrics ruminate over a failed romance; “Where did I go wrong with you,” she implores, “tell me where did I?” The latter is twitchy and pulsating, sanguine and soulful. Ani is joined by singer-songwriter Gail Ann Dorsey (best known as a touring bassist for David Bowie, Tears For Fears, Lenny Kravitz and the B-52’s). The lyrics speak to Ani’s experience as a socially conscious Feminist as she notes “I look to my left, I look to my right, I have to admit it’s a terrifying sight.” A squally guitar solo underscores her trepidations.

The most winning songs here look inward, or stick close to home. “Telepathic” finds Ani questioning the efficacy of clairvoyance as she quietly notes “goin’ behind people’s eyes is a dangerous game.” The effervescent melody is propelled by a hopscotch rhythm, keening violin, prickly guitar riffs, roiling bass and shimmery vibraphone “Evenmore” is a tart encomium to her husband and children and their surprising domestic bliss. Pliant piano runs collide with chiming acoustic guitar and punchy horns and Ani confides “Ain’t nothin’ changin’ about my passion, now that we both got tired asses, I think I love you even more.”

Other interesting tracks include the jagged and jittery “Spider” and the slinky bottleneck Blues of “Sasquatch.” There Ani archly informs an elusive Bigfoot “your hairy don’t scare me, I dine on chicanery.” The album closes with the tender panegyric of “Deferred Gratification.” The melody is anchored by a slowed kick-drum beat, a trilling horn section, rumbling bass, honeyed acoustic guitar and fluttery, rustic violin that glimmers and glides.

The lyrics pay homage to anyone who has spent their lives in the service of others. This includes parents, soldiers and most especially the 44th President of the United States. Ani has gone on record dedicating this song to Barack Obama and thanking him for being “the most awesome fucking human being any citizen could ever have the privilege to vote for. (He) lifted us up and gave us our pride back.” She goes on to ask the Goddess to “give us the strength to harness that belief in ourselves now and go forward.”

Anyone who has followed Ani would expect nothing less; the personal and political blur.

For her, talking about parental responsibilities naturally segues into a heartfelt tribute to President Obama.

Ani produced Binary, which was mixed by musician/producer Tchad Blake who has worked with everyone from Elvis Costello and Los Lobos to the Pretenders, The Black Keys, Pearl Jam and U2. While she tackled all the guitar, mellotron and orchestron parts, Ani was accompanied by her longtime touring band, bassist Todd Sickafoose and drummer Terence Higgens.

An all-star cast also pitched in, including a killer horn section that features the legendary Maceo Parker on alto saxophone, Skerik on tenor and baritone sax, Alonzo Bowers on clarinet, Bobby Campo on trumpet and Mark Mullins on trombone. Ivan Neville, (scion of Big Easy institution, Aaron, he has played with Bonnie Raitt, the Stones and Keith Richards), tackles piano, bass, organ and wurlitzer. Violinist Jenny Scheinman adds color and texture to nearly every track. Even Petah Napolitano provided backing vocals on “Evenmore.”

Binary doesn’t immediately grab by the balls (um, ovaries?), not in the way albums like Dilate, Little Plastic Castle and Knuckle Down have in the past. But given the chance, the album quietly unfolds. Ani’s activism is engaging, affecting and intimate, never didactic or preachy.

The Lil Folksinger with the shaved head has been supplanted by a maternal Folk-Punk warrior who continues to champion her causes. As the stakes have gotten bigger, so has the music.

ANTHONY CHILDS: THE ART OF CHALLENGE

A

t 23 years of age not too many know what their life path should be. But for Palm Springs High School graduate Anthony Childs, that is not the case.

Anthony is an artist who has already had his work exhibited in New York and London, England; amazing for a 23 year old. More amazing, Anthony has Down Syndrome.

Anthony has found freedom and acceptance in the art community. Whether studying art on YouTube, online classes, or attending classes at Michaels ®, Anthony has found a supportive community. “I like to paint,” said Anthony with a smile slightly brighter than sunshine and a heart as big as his smile. Anthony is a very visual person who enjoys seeing the colors, textures, highlights, and visual arrays which inspires his work.

Using primarily acrylics his work is abstraction and impressionist in style. He employs various painting tools and other items to achieve the texture in his works. Experimentation is key to Anthony’s creative style.

“I have two rescue dogs. Lexi and Grunther, “ he noted. “They are part of the family. I like to work out with my friends. I play sports. I enjoy visiting museums, decorating, history and animals.” He also participates in various community activities and events. Anthony continues to learn - studying English, Writing, and other subjects. Like many Californians he practices meditation as part a healthy lifestyle Confident and composed Anthony talked about his work. “Art makes me feel accomplished,” he said. His mother, Dee, continued, “Art has taught Anthony responsibility. He knows there are deadlines, putting finishing touches on a painting, scheduling, planning, and promoting his work. Anthony is a young adult who is happier and continues to grow with his art.

He enjoys meeting other artists and learning from them. Anthony has exhibited his work but he exhibition with Heart & Sold, and organization for artists with Down Syndrome, was one of the most important. Four works were selected for the exhibition in London, New York, and Manchester, England. He attended the artist reception in New York.

It was a pleasure to meet the other artists and celebrate the artists’ hard work and accomplishments.”

While Anthony faces challenges that most of us cannot image, he faces each new challenge with aplomb. Always learning and always looking to push himself, Anthony tries to do his very best with everything. His positive outlook changes everything into a “can do” event.

It is art that makes Anthony no different than any other young man. “He has friends.

He has purpose. He is happy. He knows what he wants. He has a path,” said his proud mother. Dee has worked to give Anthony the same opportunities as other young people. “We looked at the avenues open to Anthony and art was the best fit. Anthony is very happy with his decision to study art, enjoys developing his skills, exploring new art techniques, and is happy with his art direction.

He is very happy to have studied with some very wonderful art teachers who really shared their love of art, and highly encouraged him to be creative. “ Anthony embodies something I have always believed, that we are all born artists.

BREEZY SEEKS FOREVER HOME

T

his column recently told the story about Breezy and Glory, two large dogs available for adoption with Loving All Animals. Glory, a lovely lab shepherd mix, was adopted last week to a wonderful home. Breezy remains in foster care, well cared for and patiently waiting, knowing the perfect home awaits her as well.

Loving All Animals rescued 50-lb Breezy from the San Bernardino County Shelter in Devore where she was an unclaimed stray. As with most shelter dogs, not much more is known about her past history. With golden eyes that mesmerize and look deep into your soul, this active 2-year-old dog is believed to be a blend of Golden Retriever, Shepherd and Kelpie.

Her previous foster Mom, Debbie Karp, describes the dog she lovingly cared for, “Breezy is high energy, smart, house trained, and loves playing with toys. When she runs around the yard, she loves to go through the water. She hears everything, and would provide great protection to her humans.”

Breezy would do best in a home where she is the only dog. She will make a great companion for a young person who enjoys

training. A good match would also be a busy family with older children, as Breezy loves lots of attention. A fenced in yard is essential so she can play and run off her high energy.

BY JANET McAFEE Breezy’s current foster Dad, Lucas Van Den Elzen, finds her to be a playful, delightful dog. “Breezy is fun and very energetic. She loves playtime, particularly tug of war toys where she can interact with you. She also enjoys a belly rub. This dog craves human attention, and should be in a home where people are around a lot. She is so smart, I’m teaching her various commands and she learns them quickly. Breezy is house trained, when I let her outside she goes right to same spot in the back yard.”

Most large breed dogs are incredibly smart and easy to train. Perhaps due to their larger size brains, they process new information easily and love to learn new things. It is no accident that law enforcement agencies, search and rescue teams, and the military seek out large breed dogs to perform complex life-saving tasks. These animals are eager to please their humans, and thrive when they can learn new tasks.

House training usually comes quickly.

Dogs the size of Breezy, provide excellent protection to their households. They can best protect from burglaries when they are inside the house. No dog, despite its size, should be relegated as an “outside only” pet for a number of reasons, including the suffering they would endure in the Coachella Valley heat. Breezy becomes very attached to humans and seeks out their companionship.

More foster homes for homeless dogs like Breezy are needed. The snowbird fosters are gone, but our public shelters overflow with these beautiful animals whose only crime is not having a home. Foster homes for cats are also needed. Loving All Animals provides all vet care, pet food, supplies, and

adoption assistance.

LA DOLCE VITA DI FAR NIENTE

T

he Good Life of Wine and Relaxation—well, that would be a really loose translation. But the idea is there. And what else can we desert dwellers do but take it easy in this 115+ heat! Most invitingly, refreshing white Italian wine will be the subject of this article.

First, let’s still have some fun with the Italian saying, which is the common abbreviation of the line in the title above: “dolce far niente”. It’s the Italian phrase that culturally translates to: “the sweetness of doing nothing—carefree idleness”. It’s the laying on soft grass in the cool of the late morning gazing up at the leafy arms of a lovely tree; experiencing the soft tickle from your lover’s long quiet demure stare; the untroubled mindset whilst sitting in a

trattoria observing about, when the waiter takes almost an hour getting back to you.

Many of you vino fans love and collect the wines from the Far Niente Napa Valley Estate Winery. Along with their sister wineries of Dolce, Nickel & Nickel & EnRoute, they surely produce world class high-end wines. The winery still exhibits perhaps the oldest intact bottle of a California wine in existence: 1886 Far Niente Sweet Muscat where the label features a sepia-tone line drawing of (what you’d expect) a hammock laden with grape clusters—believed to have been designed by artist Winslow Homer.

So pull up a soft chair—or, relax in a hammock, pour yourself a thirst-quenching vitalizing quaff and read on, that is, should you care to.

BY RICK RIOZZA This week at the Palm Desert Total Wine & More store, I’ll be hosting the sold-out Wine Tour of Italy class, where we’ll be tasting through some very famous wine regions. So please allow me to share, what I hope, will enlighten and widen the vino interests of some lesser known refreshing Italian whites.

As most wine lovers already know, the beautiful mountains of Italy and surrounding seas create ideal conditions for growing grapes. It’s been said that, indeed, Italy is simply one long and fertile vineyard from the tip of the Alps to the toe of the peninsular boot that kicks into Sicily.

Let’s see if you recognize some of the major Italian white wine grapes: Pinot Grigio, Trebbiano, Garganega, Moscato, Cortese, Verdicchio, Fiano, Prosecco, Arneis, and Vermentino. How’d you do?

And then, there are the famous regions.

Many of you know these as you have traveled through or visited parts of Italy. The Veneto region is Italy’s biggest producer of wine. From the Alpine border with Austria to the lagoons of Venice, and west to the romantic Romeo & Juliet hills of Verona, this region is home to sparkling Prosecco, crisp Pinot Grigio, and the soft Soave [SwahVay]. We often write of the first two, so let’s discuss the “Rico Soave” wine.

I know “Rico Suave” was the Puerto-Rican young salsa-crooner back in the day, but sometimes still in the bars around Verona, Americans will ask for “that Rico Soave wine”! The Veronese are not French—they won’t get condescending, as long as you

enjoy it and pay for it, everyone’s happy.

The main grape here for Soave is the Garganega [gar-GONE-ne-gah] which provides for a dry light-bodied wine that speaks peach, honeydew, citrus zest, sweet marjoram with subtle note of saltiness.

Sometimes there’s a smooth oily like richness that adds a little extra punch. It’s definitely the sexy choice to handle the sultry days.

Some people are saying Umbria is the new Tuscany—it isn’t. But it’s beautiful and less-expensive on its own. And the white wine of choice all around is Orvieto: it’s the town, region and name of the wine. Made mainly from the Trebbiano grape (which by the way—is used in France to produce Cognac, and is the grape for Balsamic vinegar). This wine comes in all styles (dry to sweet), but for the hot weather, we’re enjoying the drier Orvieto Classico which shows good acidity and fruity notes of green apples, citrus, figs, lime, melon, peaches and pears.

In the northwest region known as Piemonte, where the Winter Olympics were held in Torino, two tasty crisp whites are always on the table: The Cortese [kor-TAYzay] di Gavi and the Arneis [arn-NAYZ]. The Cortese can simply be called Gavi [GAHvee], or even, Gavi di Gavi, which is the best wine of that grape and fun to say and repeat with the usual Italo-hand gestures.

This wine is interestingly aromatic, like a Sauv Blanc, with notes of anise, apples, bananas, flowers, grapefruit, herbs, honey, limes, minerals, and nuts.

The Arneis grape and its Roero wine is similar to Gavi but with an especial nod to apples, almonds, apricots, and pears. Lightbodied with a touch viscid. Both are poolparty pleasers!

The Vees have it with the Verdicchio and Vermentino grapes. Verdicchio [vehr-DEEKyoh] is one of the driest wines we’re listing here, along with sharp acidity. It definitely goes with the fruit of the sea palate, such as fish and shellfish, since it comes from the Le Marche [Lay- MARK-kay] region with its long Adriatic seacoast; similar to the Gavi aromas and flavors, but with a slightly bitter finish.

Great food wine!

Vermentino is the supple wine of Sardinia. Medium to full-bodied, this wine covers the waterfront. Imagine a Sauv Blanc mixing it up with a Grüner Veltliner and chumming with a Pinot Grigio and Muscadet; another herby wine with lemon, minerals, nuts, pears, pepper, and tropical fruits. A perfect white while dining in the slow hot wind.

As I’ve written before, the fresh seared swordfish served in Siracusa, Sicily with white Grillo [GREEL-loh] wine that is complex and fresh, alongside tropical and fruity aromas and flavors: Delizioso!— saluti!

TONY’S BURGERS: CREATIVITY BETWEEN A BUN

W

ith an amazing selection of burgers to choose from, Tony’s Burgers in Cathedral City will no doubt fulfill your burger fantasies with creative creations, balanced with the freshest of ingredients.

Tony’s Burgers is nestled in kind of a funky spot. Located in the Mission Plaza off of Date Palm and Gerald Ford, the casual, family fashioned eatery sits comfortably surrounded by an eclectic group of restaurant neighbors including, Mexican, Thai, and even Indian. It’s a little restaurant haven of sorts.

Opened in 2014 by Tony Cuevas, Tony’s Burgers has gained popularity as a local go to burger joint, even being featured on the Food Network’s website, listed as one of the 52 Top Burgers from Coast to Coast (they rank #45). It’s an impressive feat for a relatively newer restaurant, but once you bite into one of their inventions, the reasoning becomes easy to grasp.

The menu at Tony’s Burgers is extensive, and unless you have been there before, or do some online homework, it might take a minute or two to get through it in order to make your selection. Although the focus at Tony’s is their burgers, the menu puts forth other items to either enhance your burger, or perhaps give you pause to go in a completely different direction. But, make no mistake “Burger” is the word at Tony’s.

As indicated on their website, Tony’s Burgers blends Mexican and American styles to their recipes, which is reflected on their menu. The great thing about their menu is that the categories (Appetizers, Fries, Salads, etc.) have many choices for their customers to consider. Their Fries selection for instance, (offered in full or half orders), makes making a selection slightly difficult because they all sound so scrumptious. Fries such as Cajun, Parmesan, Truffle and even their full order only Avocado Fries (I’m so trying them next time), can make turning the menu page a challenge. Don’t even get me started on the dipping sauces. The danger however is that if you ordered all of the Fries that you wanted, how in the jalapeno would you have room to finish your burger? The only solution is to go there with a large group of people or visit many times, both of which are reasonable options.

Now let’s get down to burger business.

As mentioned, Tony’s has an almost freakish amount of burgers to choose from. Choices include: 32 featured 6 oz. Black Angus Chuck Hamburgers, Mini Burgers (a.k.a sliders), Exotic Burgers, and Chicken Burgers. On

my excursion to Tony’s, there were many burgers on the menu that caught my eye, such as the Popeye Ye Ye: Powerful Burger (crispy bacon, sautéed spinach, cheddar and creamy blue cheese crumbles, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle with blue cheese mayo on grilled rye bread), the Love Hater: A Garlic Delight (roasted garlic, grilled onions, roasted red peppers, Boursin Cheese lettuce, tomato, pickles and garlic aioli on a sour dough bun) and the El Jefe: Jalapeno Burger (jalapeno peppers, grilled onions, ghost pepper, jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, chipotle mayo on a jalapeno bun). If you need help in the burger choosing odyssey, you can just look for the Angus Head, which indicates their most popular burgers.

But then I discovered the section with the Mini Burgers, and I was done. The minis are just 3oz., perfect if you don’t want to commit to its 6 oz. big brother. I went with the Mini Chili, since I wanted to try out their chili anyway. My boyfriend went classic and ordered the Tony’s Classic Cheeseburger with your choice of cheese. To accompany our burgers, we ordered a half order of their Homemade Fresh Cut Fries with a side of Garlic Aioli.

Our burgers came out with no extended wait, with a large steak knife stabbed through the middle of the burgers. The knife, which seems to be a trend in many table service burger restaurants these days, provides easy cutting of the burgers. Because stuffing the whole thing in your mouth can not only be a daunting task, but also lacks an attractive quality. My Mini Burger was adorable, and dripping with Tony’s zesty chili, it was the perfect size for me. The Classic Cheeseburger that my boyfriend chose, needed to be cut in half it was so big. But despite its size, he buckled down and finished the whole juicy thing.

If perhaps you want to venture out of burger land, Tony’s will accommodate you with other items including Fish & Chips, Macho Nachos, Hot Dogs ( got to try their Chicago Dog) and even a Blue Plate Special, among other dishes. Tony’s also serves up breakfast until 11am, where you can indulge in a Chorizo and Egg Burrito, Huevos Rancheros, Pancakes and more. Tony’s Burgers is a burger fantasy island, bringing imagination and freshness to every one of their creations.

FAST BUT NOT FURIOUS NOW PLAYING: CARS 3 Is anyone really surprised that Pixar’s latest offering is heartfelt, bittersweet, perhaps even poignant. After all, that’s the animation company’s auto-set mode. But with all the emotion embedded in these oddly humanized outsize toy vehicles, let’s be honest, it’s the incredible eye-popping animation and cool sound design that’s the real draw for this satisfying family film that has something for adults and older kids, but not a whole lot for youngsters beyond the bright always in motion swirl of colors and shapes. Are there many kids under the age of

10 that are concerned with issues of ageing?

That’s the main theme running through this entry in the popular franchise.

Unexpectedly, Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson is back with expressive voice work) is challenged by the passage of time and finds it difficult to continue participating in the sport that’s been his life’s passion. Luckily, McQueen befriends, Cruz Ramirez a young Racing tech whiz who has a plan. After the requisite twists and turns plus motivation from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet, McQueen is back in the speedway game, but nothing is guaranteed when it comes to the checkered flag.

McQueen, a true champion, realizes that the only sure way to lose is to give up. Now,

on Piston Cup’s largest speedway, old #95 risks it all to find out if he still has what it takes.

Looking back with the wisdom of hindsight, the first CARS was the best, but this third outing adds nothing of significance from CARS 2. There’s also sense of redundancy to the racetrack set pieces as visceral as they sometimes are. However, even so, there is a patina of reality regarding the adult human drivers’ sense of competition and risk. Perhaps this is due to the friendship John Lassiter, head of Pixar’s and Walt Disney’s animation, had with NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon. The nice mix of authentic racing concerns beyond the issues of a midlife crisis is most welcome in this masterfully crafted film. If you’re an adult, and see this movie with younger kids, you will be more than amused, maybe even moved when you hear the voice of the late Paul Newman (recorded during the production of the first CARS) as the auto guru Doc Hudson giving encouraging advice to Lightning when the latter retreats to Radiator Springs to recover and connects with the spirit of his mentor.

Nice touch.

NEW FOR THE HOME THEATER: THE TRAIN (1964) The initial home video release sold out, but this robust action adventure starring Burt Lancaster and Paul Scofield as unstoppable foes battling for possession of pillaged French art in director John Frankenheimer’s classic World War II thriller is available again, now in stunning 1080p hi def. School shootings are an unthinkable nightmare. In this “Best Swedish Crime Novel of the Year” Quicksand (Other Press, 501 pages), author, Malin Persson Giolito, explores why some kids kill.

The book begins in the classroom.

The first person narrator describes the bodies of her teacher and friends strewn dead in the classroom. She coolly depicts her childhood friend, best friend and lover as they lie dying. But she, the narrator, is not on the floor bleeding with the others.

She is standing with a gun in her hand.

The shooter is Maja Norberg, a wellto-do high school senior who is telling her story from a jail cell before her trial begins.

Maja is a pretty girl who had everything to look forward to. She attended the best prep school; she was popular and a top student; she has a loving and supportive family; her parents are wealthy and influential; she could be whatever she wanted. Her future

But now Maja is reviled by the public and charged for her involvement in the school massacre.

Maja slowly reveals the intricacies and complications of her life, as she tells the story of her friends, family and the killings.

Derailed by a boy, everything changed when Maja started dating Sebastian Fagerman, the son of a wealthy industrialist and the richest businessman in Sweden.

Sebastian failed his last year of school and was repeating his senior year in Maja’s class.

The two had known one another from a distance since childhood. He once kissed her when she was just a little girl on the playground.

Everybody wanted to be friends with Sebastian, but he only wanted to be with Maja. Feeling special and treated like a queen, she fell for him and the wealth that surrounded him. The two traveled around Europe on the weekends and went yachting on the Mediterranean. Her parents were so impressed with they were lenient.

Slowly, Maja explains the strain and challenges of being with Sebastian. His father was controlling and belittled his son in front of her and his friends. Maja began to resent and despise Sebastian’s rude and terrible father. But as Maja pulled away, Sebastian became more needy. Although

she felt trapped and controlled by Sebastian, her friends and family encouraged her to stay with her wealthy beau.

But Sebastian was one of the bodies, which lay dead in the classroom. So why did Maja pull the trigger?

This is an intriguing tale!

Right off the bat, the reader is given a clear picture of the classroom carnage.

Maja is guilty. The crime is inexcusable. She admits to her part in the shooting. How can the reader listen to her tell her side of the awful story? She is a monster! She killed her best friend. Forensics proves it. But really, are things ever as they seem?

That’s what makes Quicksand so compelling. Swedish author, Persson Giolito, vividly recounts the changing reality of how the crime transpired. It helps that Persson Giolito is a former lawyer and European Official in Brussels. She delivers an intense subject and gripping trial.

Although the point of view is all from Maja, the reader gets to know her friends, family and the events leading up to the tragedy. Surprisingly, Maja is a reliable narrator. Honest and forthcoming, she wants the truth to be told and is willing to accept responsibility for her actions. She suffers for her crime and is remorseful.

Quicksand gives the reader a look into the European social structure, wealth disparity and racism. I especially appreciated the insight to the Swedish judicial system. No jury system, just three judges.

At one point, Maja speaks directly to the reader, saying: “You dislike me and don’t believe me. You want to see me condemned. I don’t blame you for thinking that way, but you are not in my situation.”

Love or hate Maja, I was involved in her trial and could hardly wait for the verdict.

Is justice served? Maybe. I’ll let you decide.

Quicksand delivers not only a story, but also a social commentary that is uniquely told through the life of a privileged, young girl in a horrendous situation. It is a coming of age story in the most tragic and terrible way. That is why this is such a good read.

f you work or play outside, you should know about heat stress safety tips.

Heat stress is caused by over exposure to hot climates. You might not think it is possible, but you can suffer from heat related injuries inside as well as outside.

Heat stress occurs when your body’s core temperature rises above normal.

Follow these heat stress safety tips to prevent heat injuries: Types of Heat Stress – There are two popular types of heat stress. The first is heat stroke.

This is caused by your body temperature rising above 103 degrees. Heat stroke is a serious problem and often leads to death if it is not taken care of immediately. There are several symptoms of heat stroke.

Symptoms of heat stroke include difficulty breathing, headache, dizziness, flushed skin, vomiting, no sweat on skin, seizure and loss of consciousness. If you notice someone suffering from any of these symptoms call for medical attention.

Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion - The cause of heat exhaustion is very similar to heat stroke. The main difference is that the body is having trouble dehydrating to due

lack of liquids and electrolytes. People that are most likely to suffer heat exhaustion are outdoor workers and the elderly. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include fatigue, cool clammy skin, excessive sweating, anxiousness, thirst, cloudy thinking and trouble standing. If you or someone you are working with starts to show these symptoms, seek medical help immediately.

There are a few things you can do while waiting for help to keep the person from getting worse. Pour cold water on them.

Sit in a shaded area. Remove any heavy clothing Heat Stress Prevention Safety Tips - It’s important for you to wear light, loose fitting clothes that allow air to flow through them.

Clothes should be light colors that reflect the Sun rather than dark which attracts the sun. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Avoid drinks with caffeine in them. They will cause you to dehydrate faster. If at all possible, work in a shaded area. If you are on any medication, check with your doctor to make sure long exposure to the sun is safe. Take frequent breaks to cool off.

T

wenty-five years ago, Wal-Mart entered the grocery business.

Today, Wal-Mart is the largest seller of groceries in the United States commanding a 25% market share. The second largest grocer is Kroger at 8.2% with brands like Ralph’s, Food 4 Less, Fry’s and Smith’s.

In buying Whole Foods and their 1.6% market share, Amazon gets the best brand in the grocery business and its highly coveted and upwardly mobile millennial customer base. Amazon also gains 456 quality locations in 43 states from which to expand their presence in the daily life of the American consumer.

The grocery business is highly fragmented and Amazon seems intent on reinventing the grocery business and the way in which Americans shop.

Niche markets like Cardenas should continue to do well. Grocers that cannot differentiate from the pack will be hurt the most. This is why Kroger, the parent to Ralph’s, lost 30% of their stock value due to the Amazon purchase of Whole Foods.

If price is eliminated, what does Ralph’s do better than Whole Foods? What about Jensen’s, Vons or Albertsons? Expect weaker competitors to quickly merge with their stronger counterparts.

If history is an indicator, expect Amazon

to cut Whole Foods’ prices as they look to grab a Wal-Mart-sized market share as quickly as possible.

We can also expect Amazon to use its entry into the grocery business as part of a grander strategy intent on reinventing retail shopping in a manner similar to Netflix and Apple when they reinvented movie rentals. Not too long ago, a company named Blockbuster was a Fortune 500 company.

When shopping, it is envisioned that you will be able to sit down near your Amazon Echo and dictate your shopping list. Don’t be surprised if Echo suggests other items for your virtual cart. By the time that you arrive at the store, your order will be ready and put in your car for you.

If you prefer to go to the store and pick out your purchases, simply take an item from the shelf, add it to your grocery cart and walk out of the store without having to stop for a cashier. Amazon has the technology to automatically scan the barcode on the items that you put in your cart and bill you for that purchase without ever removing cash or a credit card from your wallet.

On days when it is 120 degrees in the desert, let Amazon bring your order to you - so long as you are an Amazon Prime member (50% of all American households have Amazon Prime). If an Amazon Prime membership includes food delivery and

better prices than Costco, do you really want to pay Costco annually to face their long lines and do all the schlepping yourself?

Wal-Mart is gearing up to compete with Amazon head-to-head in retail as they have the best distribution system amongst U.S. retailers; with their purchase of online retailers like Jet. com and men’s clothing retailer, Bonobos, expect Wal-Mart to put up a mighty fight.

As Borders, Circuit City, Sports Authority and Radio Shack have failed with the advance of online merchants, expect other retailers to merge or fail at an increasing rate. Sears, JC Penney, Staples and Macy’s are all downsizing their retail footprints quickly as they try and survive. Other retailers like The Limited, Gymboree and Payless Shoes have declared bankruptcy in their attempts to reorganize debts and find a path toward survival.

Even Wal-Mart has stopped building new locations as it looks to pivot and face the mighty Amazon. Retail as we know it is about to face fundamental change.

SHOPLIFTING TO INCREASE DURING SUMMER?

D

uring the summer CV merchants are at risk with under-staffed stores that allow crooks to “do their thing.” With the “down desert economy” many people are hurting and committing crimes they might not have performed if they had a job. Many of our neighbors are drinking to stay “cool” and not using good common sense and commit uncharacteristic crimes.

One shoplifter trick is the little known Booster Box. This is a large box with a false bottom that is often spring loaded and when placed over a shopping bag, purse or product the spring secures the item inside the box.

Some thieves don’t need any equipment to steal. For instance a car can be stolen without obtaining the owner’s keys or hotwiring the car. The thief looks on the left front windshield for the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) number. They write the VIN number down and then go to the car dealership’s parts department and explain they own the car with that VIN number and they lost their keys. A new device to open the car will be provided to the thief... and then the rest is history.

Cell Phones are another popular target

for thieves because they have private emails, bank account records, personal codes and passwords. Obtaining these items makes it easy to steal your money or ID. Often there are two crooks that work together with one bumping and distracting you and the other “picking your pocket.”

Your credit card information can also be stolen without taking the physical credit card. These sophisticated thieves have an IPAD sized RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Device) costing less than $100. It automatically secures your card info from a tiny chip in your card as they walk by you in a restaurant, airport or department store. If your card has the symbol of 4 waves )))) or says Pay Pass, Pay Wave or Blink it has an RFID. This RFID info can be transferred onto a hotel credit card sized room key which now becomes a duplicate “credit card.” To avoid this, you should place your credit cards or passport into a protective sleeve that has an aluminum lining.

I advise my family to write “ASK FOR PHOTO ID” on the back of all credit cards, instead of just signing their name. That gives you one more level of insulation against the bad guys.

MONEY VS MCGREGOR SET FOR AUG 26TH IN LAS VEGAS

C

onor McGregor vs.

Floyd Mayweather betting odds have shift as McGregor attracts lots of early action. As improbable as it might be for Conor McGregor to beat Floyd Mayweather in their Aug. 26 boxing match, much of the public is giving the UFC star a chance. McGregor remains a heavy underdog for their super fight, but the betting odds continue to move as the bout gets closer. McGregor’s odds shifted to +500 with Mayweather listed as a -700 favorite as the Westgate Las Vegas Super Book. Three days earlier when the fight became official, McGregor was a +700 underdog and Mayweather had -1100 odds. When the sportsbook first created odds for the prospective fight in November, Mayweather had -2500 odds to win.

Gamblers that are looking to place a wager on Mayweather might rather look online. Bovada.lv lists Mayweather as just a -550 favorite, while McGregor has +375 odds.

The change in the moneyline has resulted from a large portion of the public taking a chance on the first-time boxer. Even though McGregor has never had a professional boxing match and Mayweather is the best fighter of his generation, gamblers seem to be intrigued by the longshot.

According to ESPN’s David Purdum, 140 of the first 144 bets placed at Caesars Palace sportsbooks were all on McGregor.

The Westgate saw 90 percent of the bets backing McGregor, but the size of those wagers prevented the sportsbook from changing the line too drastically.

Nearly 80 percent of the money wagered on the fight at the Westgate was on Mayweather as of Sunday. Someone bet $50,000 on Mayweather on May 30, and another bettor placed a $45,000 wager on Mayweather Thursday.

The Westgate released prop bets Saturday, giving Mayweather 5-9 odds of knocking McGregor out. Mayweather is 49-0 in his career, but he hasn’t won via stoppage since victory No. 42 against Victor Ortiz on Sept. 17, 2011.

Mayweather has 2-1 odds to win by decision, which he did unanimously when he last stepped in the ring. McGregor has 6-1 odds to get a knockout, and he has 30-1 odds to get what would be a stunning victory by decision.

Mayweather isn’t nearly the favorite

that he was against Andre Berto before he won his last fight two years ago. He had -3000 odds in that fight, and Mayweather was a -200 favorite four months earlier in his mega-fight against Manny Pacquiao.

Before Mayweather’s fight in 2013 against Canelo Alvarez, who’s proven to be among the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport, he was given -300 odds.

Mayweather was a -600 favorite and a -900 favorite in his two fights against Marcos Maidana in 2014.

McGregor has never been such a heavy underdog in the UFC. In his last two wins against Nate Diaz and Eddie Alvarez, the UFC lightweight champion was less than a 1-2 favorite in each bout. McGregor was barely favored against Jose Aldo at UFC 194 in 2015 before he knocked out the thenfeatherweight champion in just 13 seconds.

UFC is more prone to upsets than boxing, but that doesn’t mean they don’t happen inside the squared circle. Former super flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez lost as a -2250 favorite to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in March. Gennady Golovkin nearly lost that night as a -800 favorite, but he narrowly defeated Daniel Jacobs by unanimous decision. Let the hype begin.

o build a life, it is even more important to have a plan or goal.”

– Zig Ziglar. Can you recall the first time you set a goal for yourself? Setting goals for yourself is one the most powerful actions you can take. Goals maintain our ambition. Goals help us to continue to believe in ourselves.

First and foremost, what exactly is a goal?

According to Wikipedia the exact definition of a goal is: A desired result a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve a personal or organizational desired end-point in some sort of assumed development. Many people endeavor to reach goals within a finite time by setting deadlines.

Therefore, any planning you have or hold for your future is that of a goal. Even the smallest tasks are goals. However, a majority of us have and set very high intentions for ourselves. Raising two daughters on my own takes goal setting to a whole other level (as you can imagine). As a yoga instructor it is my responsibility to encourage goals for my students. Goal setting can be the catalyst to greater self-esteem, overall confidence, and knowing we can commence a task and complete something.

Goals give us focus. Imagine you were trying to achieve a certain yoga posture but you weren’t sure exactly how to start or even get into the pose. Why would you attempt to do something without a clear

focus on how to get there? A sense of direction can give us clear focus on how to aim for the finished result.

Goals allow us to measure our progress.

When we are diligent about something we are trying to achieve we can look back at where we began and look at where we are now. Say you are coloring a picture. As you progress, with your coloring you can see the page filled with the beautiful colors you have applied and recognize you are no longer looking at a blank page.

Goals keep you from being distracted.

If there is a task you are diligently trying to achieve you will remain focused to get to the end point. Each time we complete a set goal there is always a reward at the end.

Goals also lead you away from procrastination. We’re all guilty of putting things off. When we set a time and day to complete a project you are making yourself accountable. Plus, when you write down or think about what you need to get done you are more likely to aim for completion.

Goals motivate us! Any sort of motivation or inspiration stems from your setting goals.

Any sort of concrete endpoint you give yourself gets you excited about what you can accomplish.

Being a goal digger will get you to your pot of gold. Aim high and remain confident in all you do!

BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY HELPS MORE THAN APPEARANCE

M

ost women want to have a curvy figure but there are many women whose overly curvy figure causes problems. A disproportionately large chest can make it difficult to find clothes that fit.

From undergarments that are supportive enough but still look feminine to shirts that won’t button across the front with out gapping, shopping can be a chore. If you can find something that fits across the chest it very often doesn’t fit through the waist and you can look wide or thick because of all the extra fabric.

But clothing fit is not the worst of the problems that women with large chests face. Carrying around extra weight can cause stress and pain to the neck, upper back and shoulders. Some women have grooves in the shoulders where the bra strap sits, holding up all the extra weight. Infections between and under the breasts are quite common as well.

Often women with large breasts are not as physically active as they would like to be because the extra tissue “gets in the way” or makes running and jumping sports impossible because of uncomfortable or painful bouncing.

Breast reduction surgery is a wonderful option to improve back and neck pain, reestablish a more proportionate figure and restore self-confidence. NEGOTIATE FOR THE WIN!

A

s the incoming text signal sounded, I snatched up the phone and smiled broadly. The message from my client read, “I did it!! After almost a two hour meeting I got the raise!” Earlier in the week we discussed and rehearsed negotiating for this pay increase. Although Deanne was well prepared, it obviously wasn’t a slam dunk.

Spending a good portion of the morning in the partner’s office vying for larger piece of the pie took determination, tenacity and some well honed bargaining skills.

We previously discussed the importance of taking responsibility for her financial future.

If Deanne did not speak up for herself, no fairy Godmother was going to wave a magic wand and fatten her paycheck. Going into the meeting Deanne knew she had to be professional beyond measure yet assertive.

She was ready to win. Having done her research on comparable jobs in the region, she had the figures supporting her argument. What Deanne also prepared was a commentary on the value she added to the firm over the past twelve months. She discussed how she took the lead on audits, trained and mentored employees and gave examples of how she delivered profit to the bottom line.

Sure, in a perfect world life would be fair

and Deanne wouldn’t have to work so hard to convince her manager to up her base pay. The fact that the economy is showing improvement does not mean companies are all giddy about handing out annual increases. Some employers are sticking to giving a small cost of living bump, perhaps 2 percentage points while others delay salary reviews to the 18 month mark or beyond. Other players in the corporate world offer base plus a variable compensation component. If the company has a good year, everyone wins, if the company stumbles, even the best employees go unrewarded.

Whether you are in line for a salary review or in a job search, start honing your negotiation skills. Approach a scheduled salary discussion by being personable and reasonable. Do your homework, practice with a friend and go prepared with a laundry list of facts and data.

Just a suggestion: Before you hit the bosses’ office, try practicing on small events like when your wife wants to go out to dinner and you prefer to stay home and watch the ballgame. A savvy negotiation will have you munching pizza in front of the tube by the first inning. Good luck!

his article discusses the studies and laws that validate medical cannabis as an effective drug. It’s time to confront the lies by the government that want us to believe cannabis has no medicinal use. It is time to educate. This is a bipartisan issue. Even Republican Senators, Congressmen, and Governors want to decriminalize cannabis. The Republican Governor of Florida, Rick Scott signed the medical marijuana bill on the final day of the regular session last month. It allows patients who suffer chronic pain related to 10 qualifying conditions to receive either low-THC cannabis or full-strength medical marijuana.

In the Illinois’ pilot program researchers surveyed 300 of the state’s 18,000 registered medical marijuana users. Eighty six percent of the patients reported suffering from chronic pain, insomnia, and anxiety. Forty nine percent earned less than $40,000 annually but spent over $3000 a year on medical cannabis products. Ninety two percent of the patients surveyed reported that cannabis allowed them to cut down on their prescription drug use, while 33% were able to quit using prescription drugs altogether.

Kentucky Senator Perry Clark spoke at the Mensa Annual Gathering in Louisville last year about the myths surrounding cannabis.

It should not be a Schedule I drug lumped in with ecstasy and heroin.

The FDA finally approved in April 2017 the WEED Trial for Vets with PTSD or posttraumatic stress disease. (www.ptsd.va.gov).

Eleven to twenty per cent of veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars in 2003 had PTSD. Twenty veterans commit suicide every day.

In April 2017 Florida Representatives, Matt Gaetz, a Republican, and Darren Soto, a Democrat, aim to roll back the prohibition and reclassify marijuana as a Schedule III substance the same citatory as anabolic steroids.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that opiate overdoses in medical cannabis states dropped 25 percent between 1999 and 2010.

Since then the number of medical cannabis states have more than doubled from 13 to 28. Doctors in Massachusetts and California are also experimenting with cannabis as an

opiate addiction treatment. (www.ncbi.nlm. nih.gov/pubmed/26889611) On average, states that have legalized medical cannabis have seen a reduction in opioid overdose deaths of 25%. That’s incredibly significant. Boehnke KF, Litinas E, Clauw DJ. (2016).

Diane Feinstein and Chuck Grassley introduced a bill to support research on CBD and medical marijuana, The Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act would reduce regulatory barriers inhibiting cannabis research and require the Justice Department to complete an analysis of the medical value of CBD within one year. It would allow it to be treated as a Schedule II drug like morphine, removing it from its current status as a Schedule I alongside deadly contraband including ecstasy. Remember how Norco was rescheduled? We do not want to be going to the physician’s office to obtain a triplicate prescription for cannabis. Tell Senators Feinstein and Grassley the US Govt. already knows of the efficacy of medical cannabis. Stop studying, Start reclassifying.

President Trump has stated he is for medical cannabis but leans towards letting the states regulate it. The Federal bureaucracy is so entrenched with the Deep State secrecy no one seems willing to expose the 2003, US Government Patent 6630507 B1- Cannabinoids as a Medicine.

The US Govt. patent contradicts Schedule I definition and validates cannabinoids usefulness in the treatment of age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune disease, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and HIV dementia.

Quality medical care should not depend on a person’s zip code. We are bigger than the lobbyists. We proved that when the nation supported Sanders and Trump. We can’t have the establishment picking and choosing which laws to enforce dependent on which President comes into office. It is time to get this drug reclassified. Get active. Give Rep.
