n a pre-pandemic world, July 4th celebrations would often entail large gatherings with family and friends, barbecues, and several fireworks going off in the sky. This year will not hold the same kind of celebrations as previous Independence Days, as cases of COVID-19 continue to surge throughout Riverside County in record numbers. Many desert cities have cancelled their annual fireworks celebrations, including Palm Springs and Palm Desert. There will, however, be a fireworks show at Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa in Rancho Mirage with synchronized
music on Mix 100.5 at 9 p.m. on July 4th. The event has free parking and admission opening at 3 p.m. "Who would have guessed a year ago that drive-ins would take on a whole new life? But, here we are with drive-in graduations and weddings; continuing to find a way to living our ‘together but apart’ new normal. So, when we were faced with the choice to cancel the 4th of July fireworks show, those drivein events came to mind, and with an event that uses the sky as its canvas, we knew we could do the event ‘together but apart,’” said Darrel Kammeyer, Vice President of Marketing at Agua Caliente Casinos. It is recommended that attendees arrive early to secure a parking space, as this year’s show has a limited vehicle capacity of 350 parking spaces due to social distancing protocols and is anticipated to have a lot of viewers. Cars will be arranged to provide safe distances for families to view the fireworks, and all attendees will be required to wear their face-coverings while on property. “We encourage guests to visit our website at aguacalientecasinos.com to learn more about all of the precautions Agua Caliente Casinos is taking during the COVID-19 pandemic including the use of MicroShield 360, the addition of an Agua Caliente Clean Team, and more,” stated Kammeyer.

Throughout the last few weeks, the cities across the Coachella Valley have experienced a string of illegal fireworks go off multiple times in various hours of the night. There have been numerous complaints and hundreds of calls made to local police stations to report the noise. Fireworks that fly into the air or explode are banned in California and are classified as illegal and are never permitted to be sold or discharged. The three desert cities that are permitted to sell and discharge “safe and sane” fireworks are Desert Hot Springs, Indio, and Coachella, with Cathedral City just recently prohibiting the sale this year. “Safe and sane” fireworks that are acceptable to be sold to the public only refer to fireworks that do not fly or explode such as sparklers, fountains, snake items, and spinners. Anyone caught using or allowing illegal pyrotechnics to be used on their property will receive a fine of $1,000 for the first offense, an additional $2,000 more for a subsequent offense, and an increase of $1,000 for each offense that comes after the second. The negative backlash has been voiced by Coachella Valley residents about the illegal use of fireworks, citing not only safety concerns, but the wellbeing of those who suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder that might be triggered by the noise and animals that become frightened by the loud booming. “Besides the fact that the fireworks are against the law, there is the disrespect factor to consider as well. I grew up in areas where fireworks were and are still available all year around, Florida being one of them. They have supermarkets that carry only fireworks. At that time, it was great. Times have changed and we're not in those areas any more. Animals around here are not accustomed to the sounds of fireworks and gun shots. A lot of the people around here aren't either,” said desert resident Brian Baker. continue to page 5

olden Boy Boxing returns to Fantasy Springs Resort Casino on Friday, July 24th with WBA Gold Welterweight Champion Vergil Ortiz Jr. (15-0, 15 KOs) defending his title against Samuel Vargas (31-5-2, 14 KOs) in the 12-round main event. The fight, which was initially planned in March, will be closed to the public as part of Fantasy Springs’ ongoing COVD-19 precautions, but will be streamed live on DAZN. “Preparing our comeback hasn’t been easy, but we have a responsibility to our fighters and our fans to stage high-level boxing events as soon as we possibly can,” said Golden Boy Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya. “This card demonstrates our commitment to presenting competitive fights despite current circumstances, as the future of boxing, Vergil Ortiz Jr., will step into the ring with Samuel Vargas.” Since making his professional debut in 2016, Ortiz has knocked out every opponent he’s faced. The Grand Prairie, Texas native (with roots in Michoacan, Mexico) is coming off a spectacular 2019 in which he stopped the likes of Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera, Antonio “Relentless” Orozco and Brad “King” Solomon. “I’m very thankful and excited to be headlining the first Golden Boy event
after the quarantine,” said the 22-yearold rising star. “I’m happy that it’s still with the same opponent, so basically we’re picking up where we left off. It’s going to be a tough fight, and it’ll be a great way to kick off the year for me.” Vargas is recognized as one of the toughest challengers in any division. The 31-year-old native of Bogota, Colombia has faced a who’s who of top welterweights, including Amir “King” Khan, Luis Collazo, Danny “Swift” Garcia and Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. “I think this time off benefited me, said
Vargas. “I’m ready to upset the world… The show will be different. There will be no fans. But I have no doubt that I am going to win.” In the co-main event, Hector “El Finito” Tanajara Jr. (19-0, 5 KOs) takes on twotime world title challenger Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (32-3-3, 17 KOs) of Cebu, Philippines in a 10-round defense of the USNBC Lightweight Title. Pomona’s Shane Mosley Jr. (15-3, 9 KOs), son of former multiple world champion title holder Shane Mosely, will make his debut under the Golden Boy

hours they are set off are factors that become problematic. “If they weren’t going off at 2 in the morning, I wouldn't have an issue with it. It’s people using the very powerful and dangerous fireworks during the cover of night that I have issues with,” explained Ashcraft. Residents also take into consideration that while many families are confined at home sheltering in place, these fireworks are a means of celebrating the many graduations and upcoming summer holidays like Independence Day. There is, however, a fine line between celebrating and causing a disturbance to others. “Everybody keeps saying it’s just people celebrating, but it definitely disturbs the peace and keeps everybody on high alert as we have to decipher between fireworks and possible gunshots,” shared downtown Indio resident Hanna Fickewirth. While the 4th of July is very much a reason for celebration, please keep in mind the safety regulations in place regarding fireworks and the social distance guidelines involving gatherings this Saturday.

AMERICAN THEATRE IN HISTORY
n the immortal words of Hamlet, “The Play’s the thing.” As America celebrates another year of independence in the midst of great economic and cultural change, it’s always interesting to take stock of where we come from. I love history and etymology. How did this thing called theatre make its way to the British Colonies and take flight in the land we call America? It’s common knowledge that theatre originated with the ancient Greeks. They loved their festivals. But it has been a part of the American culture since long before the Colonies became a country known as the United States of America. Theatre followed us from Europe. Repertoire from England was originally brought over that included productions like Shakespe are’s Hamlet and Othello. The first American playhouse was started on the Palace Green in Williamsburg, Virginia by merchant William Levingston in 1716. That theatre was closely followed by the opening of the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, South Carolina in 1730, Which is still currently in operation. There was a brief time as America sought to break away from England, that it chose to distance itself from a lot of British culture, including Theatre. In the beginning puritanical leaders sought to oppress the arts. Prior to writing the Declaration of Independence, the first Continental Congress passed the Articles of Association, a document written in response to the British Intolerable Acts. The Articles called for a “discountenance and discourage [of] every species of extravagance and dissipation, especially… exhibitions of shows, plays, and other expensive diversions.” As British rule and culture were rejected by the colonies, many aspects of British society, such as theatre, was denounced in the same vein as vices like gambling. Quakers believed that theatre could present a danger to the “immortal soul,” and was in opposition to the Christian God. But as English author, Geoffrey Chaucer, famously said, “Time and tide wait for no man.” Even George Washington was said to be a fan of theatre. The Performing arts are a vital part of any culture and Americans soon loosened up their puritanical breeches around the 1800’s and fears about the ‘morality’ of plays began to subside. By the opening of the 19th Century, Broadway began to coalesce and New York became the undisputed leader of the American stage. The Civil War brought horrific instability and stress to Americans, but within a short time, theatre became the entertainment and distraction that was most needed. And sadly, just 5 days after the South surrendered, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Ford’s theatre by an actor named John Wilkes Booth. By the late half of the 19th Century, power steam ships made transatlantic travel so much easier, (for the rich at least,) and European shows easily traveled to American stages. Vaudeville became popular, performances included anything from trained animals to one-act plays and magicians. A lot of known celebrities of the era got their start on the

moving to California at age 12, and spending her formative years after college in New York, then returning to California, Broadway veteran Teri Ralston recently—and happily— once again moved back to New York, an event inspiring the title of her new CD, I’VE GOTTA GET BACK TO NEW YORK. Teri Ralston began her professional career with the rock musical Your Own Thing, followed by Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. Later that year she was cast in Company, beginning a long, fruitful relationship with Stephen Sondheim and Hal Prince, including A Little Night Music. She appeared in Side By Side By Sondheim...once with Peggy Lee (a production she also directed); three different productions of Follies, Yvonne in Sunday in the Park with George, and starred in the new Sondheim revue Moving On at the Laguna Playhouse. Teri has also found much satisfaction in her directing career. She has performed in summer stock around the country. Recent summer stock includes: Gypsy (Rose), Carousel (Nettie), Oklahoma! (Aunt Eller), Damn Yankees (Meg), Pirates of Penzance (Ruth), The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (Doatsie Mae), The Sound of Music (Mother Abbess), The Music Man (Mrs. Paroo), The Wizard of Oz (Glinda), Beauty and the Beast (Wardrobe), Cabaret (Frauline Schneider), and Into the Woods (Stepmother). She is featured on seven original cast albums and three CDs recorded in London.

Vaudeville stage, including comedians Abbot and Costello, singer Judy Garland, Stripper Gypsy Rose Lee and magician Harry Houdini. In addition to Vaudeville, throughout the 19th and early 20th Century, Minstrel shows were also popular. These were skits performed by white men in blackface, who demeaned the African American population. Prior to WWII, Vaudeville had become one of the most popular forms of live entertainment, but interest began to wane in the 1930’s and by the start of WWII, Film was becoming a popular medium. It was during this time of transition when Vaudeville was disappearing and film was gaining prominence, that musical theatre claimed its space on the stage. Who can resist the magic of music and choreography? Following WWII American theatre really began to come into its own. Playwrights like Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams began to see their works not only on American stages, but being produced internationally and American Theatre took a serious turn. The shows being produced during the Civil Rights era of the 1950’s and 60’s, did what theatre does best, they reflected the societal changes that were taking place. Social consciousness
began to shape works that were more aligned with the civil rights movement, and populations other than ‘white men,’ who had dominated scripts and productions, began to slowly open up to more diverse voices. In the 21st century Broadway productions have built on the success and revitalization of earlier shows, with productions becoming more elaborate and expensive. Popular modern musicals, such as LinManuel Miranda’s Hamilton and Stephen Schwartz’s Wicked have proven successful with modern audiences, while dramatic productions such as Tony Kushner’s Angels in America continue to address social justice concerns. In a country that has endured major periods of transformation in its relatively short existence, American theatre has remained a popular form of expression due to its ability to adjust to change– a fluid industry that adjusts to the social setting it finds itself within. Even now due to current circumstances and most stages remaining dark, Theatre Professionals continue to look for ways to adapt. Theatre is always reinventing itself in order to be a relevant reflection of American society and culture. Live Stage performances have survived the invent of film, television, radio and the internet. American theatre has a long and culturally relevant history. There is no doubt that as the country adapts to these new circumstances, theatre will be a frontrunner in creating the changes we face. “The Play’s the thing.” Dee Jae Cox is a playwright, director and producer. uch like budding bands Pescaterritory and Silver Sky are doing for the Rock scene in the Coachella Valley in 2020, Intel$ is accomplishing the same for the desert’s Hip-Hop and Rap scene. The powerful pair of Yungbc (Bannon) and King D-Roc (Derrick) are 18 and 17 years old respectively and are the new generation of musicians using Hip-Hop and Rap as a platform to minister their understanding of life thus far. Their album “92260” was released on Friday, June 26, 2020, on all major platforms and is a profound mix of 14 songs that features collaborations with local Rap hero Lootenant and two songs with songstress Evelyn Kircher. The album’s title references the zip code for Palm Desert, California, some say the center and birthplace of “Stoner Rock” thanks to bands like Kyuss and Unsound, and now possibly a launching pad for the next breed of breakthrough HipHop and Rap artists. Coachella Valley Weekly spoke with the duo on a number of subjects via Zoom. The Music - ‘92260’ “This album was really confessional. We got out what we wanted to say and talk about. When people listen to it, we want them to really understand that this is not some typical thing to get a ‘hit’. We want it to mean something when we rap and make a song and we just all want it to tie together so it’s one big message. That was the main focus upon every one of the songs. We sat down, wrote lyrics and thought about what we wanted to say to people and ourselves and to prove something to ourselves. It’s been a lot of building our emotional ways and everything that we’ve been through and our perspective. That’s what we want people to hear.” “I want our music to be different. You look at two teens from the Coachella Valley and you think we’re just kids. We’re kids that love making music and we want to preach our word. This album was a two-year long process as far as getting songs together. It was a lot of emotions and a lot of bumps in the road. I want people to be in their own world when they listen to our music, I want

them to get lost and understand what we’re trying to say. There are so many songs on this album and our past music that have so many different meanings. People can make their own assumptions. On the album cover there are 65 different people as a collage. We really wanted to represent the 760 and what we’re about. I think some artists can shy away from their roots but we want to put our name on the map. ‘Party’ was the song that completely blew up. That changed how people looked at us when it came to music and we became well-known. I also had a couple of solo songs that did really well and in putting together this album, it really paid off.” “I like to think of us as an ‘odd futureesque’ style that we do. If you go back to 2011 there were a bunch of kids from California who would cuss like crazy. They are some of my heroes and favorite artists and they really sculpted me as an artist. I feel like we’ve calmed down a little in the cussing than we used to but I think it’s good to put people in an uncomfortable position listening to our music. I want our music to not be just someone else you hear on the radio, I want it to be the most different music you’ve ever heard.” George Floyd and COVID-19 “With the protests and pandemic going on, is this right time to release new music? We did consider what was going on. We
weren’t trying to be selfish. I think it was a perfect time to put this album out. I don’t care about streams and numbers, we care more about the safety of other people and justice being served. We want happiness in the world. I believe people want music. We’re making more music. I think that’s the key. With this album, 90% of the time, Derrick and I weren’t together. The only two we recorded together were ‘Upset’ and ‘G.O.O.D.’ There were a lot of 7 hour calls. We’re not stopping.” Live Music “I miss it 1000%! I think I can speak for a lot of Coachella Valley artists, if you look at all the venues out here, there aren’t many, but we support them; Coachella Bar, The Hood Bar and Pizza, Bart Lounge and Flat Black Art Supplies. I performed a 20 minute set at Bart but was kicked out right after, it’s all good, I understand. Because of our age, it was hard to get shows. We had to get creative. We had to pester a lot of people to listen to our music and hear what we’re about”. INTEL$ “That name came from Derrick. It means to find a different meaning. We’re giving you the ‘intel’ and the information. All credit to Derrick, he’s more affiliated with Hip-Hop, he grew up in North Palm Springs. I learned to play piano when I was 4 and carried that on through 8th grade. Derrick and I started
making music together in my sophomore year at Palm Desert High School. We were solo artists at the time. I became enamored at a Rap battle in 8th grade. There was no beef between Derrick and I, we just recognized each other. We put out a song called “Worth Your While” and it took off from there.” White Rapper “I’m extremely conscious of it but I don’t ponder it too much or think about it 24/7. It just makes me more different than the rest. You don’t come across a lot of White Hip-Hop artists. The only ones I think of are Eminem, Macklemore and Logic. I’ve never really had an issue with it. I portray myself as Yungbc and Derrick is D-Roc and we’re just two kids making music and having fun. We’re proven and it’s showing.” Prominent Influences “Tyler, The Creator is #1, Kid Cudi, Pharrell and N.E.R.D. are artists I’ve always loved. ‘Seeing Sounds’ is one of my favorite albums. I love 2000’s Hip-Hop, Ludacris and Mos Def are incredible lyricists and artists. The first album I ever listened to was ‘Graduation’ by Kanye West. I feel music in general is all over the place for me. I’ve always had a soft spot for Elton John thanks to my grandma. Piano in Hip-Hop is such a big deal to me. I try to incorporate that. At 10 I would play piano around the valley with my mom, she’s an incredible singer.” ‘Muchluv’ (2019) - Yungbc Solo Album “I had G.O.O.N.S, Evelyn Kircher, she’s from Oregon and affiliated with our record label Myriad Productions, and Alex Kiner sang on ‘Mixed Emotions’, one of the bigger songs on the album. I have more stuff on the way featuring her so I’ll have a busy summer.” Stoner Rock & Hip-Hop “I understand the impact that Kyuss and Josh Homme has had on this desert. I’ve heard those stories of the generator parties. Those were the lengths that those artists took. It’s the same thing with us. I wish I was alive during the 90’s. I feel like people need to be more open to Hip-Hop. This can be a very ‘Rock’ town, if there were some venues who opened their doors to Hip-Hop artists the crowds could be huge.” G.O.O.N.S “They are the most driven group of people. I feel they are underrated as hell. Before the pandemic they were doing shows once a week. When I first met them, they had a song called ‘Vibe With Me’. I loved the beat and song. It hit a different corner with me. I hit up Stevie and I asked if I could do a remix, I didn’t tell them what my verse was, I recorded it once and they were taken aback. I like Stevie’s ideas and how his mind works. You either treat this Rap stuff as a hobby our as a 9-5 and I think Stevie, Sonny, Dom and Slum work hard, they are recording
www.coachellavalleyweekly.com until 2 or 3 in the morning! They don’t even start getting ready until midnight. They are people I show love to and they made my album incredible. Shout-out to G.O.O.N.S.” Lootenant “Lootenant is a different breed. He pushes me to such a different level. His story, in general, is insane. He’s one person that has really uplifted the Rap game here in the Coachella Valley. He has allowed a lot of people to appreciate Rap. His first cypher was incredible. He doesn’t care what other people think, that’s what’s so tight about him. The song ‘G.O.O.D.’ is one of the best songs on the album. LOOT is someone everyone loves. He’s a fun guy to be around. His 2PAC show brought the house down. Lootenant is an incredible figure and person.
I
He’s one of my favorite artists. He’s one of the nicest guys I’ve met. I was scheduled to participate in his next cypher but due to the pandemic it didn’t work out.” A Year From Now “I see myself still making music and looking beyond the Coachella Valley. With our youth, where we stand, how we work and push ourselves, we can go to unprecedented levels. Having fun, being myself and making sure I’m OK is another plan. We don’t do the weekly shows because we’re not 21. We’ve made so many sacrifices for the music. I’ve waited 18 years to be where I am today. I hope people can see the passion we put into it. We are the voice.” Purchase the new album ‘92260’ here: fanlink.to/92260-intels.

CONSIDER THIS
M
usical trends come and go, but the sounds of Power Pop and Punk seem to never go out of style. The newest practitioners of that classic genre blend are The Reflectors. The guys in the band, James Carman (vocals, guitar), Johnny Reyes (drums), Nick Faciane (guitar, vocals) and Ryan Miranda (bass) grew up together in the South Bay region of Los Angeles. They bonded as kids and shared an affinity for all things Punk, along with Power Pop, New Wave and Rhythm & Blues. Inspired by bands like The Who, The Nerves and The Buzzcocks, they began playing music. Although they attended school together and played music nearly day, each member cycled through a couple of different bands before reconnecting a couple of years ago and forming The Reflectors. The four-piece pretty much hit the ground running, lining up gigs throughout the L.A. area and making a name for themselves as an incendiary live act. Recently they signed with respected indie label Burger Records, and have just released their debut, First Impression. The record roars to life on the opening cut, “Act A Fool.” Guitars pivot between jangly riff-age and slashing power chords, bookended by rubbery bass lines and a walloping backbeat. James and Nick’s boyish tenors wrap around lyrics that perfectly distill the urgency of instant attraction; “Cause I Can’t deny all the times I tried to get to you girl, I’ve been acting like a fool this time around.” A spiky guitar solo on the break underscores the inevitable rush of hormones, but the boys still manage to stop on a dime. The album’s first couple of singles each pack a powerful punch. “Teenage Hearts” is powered by stinging guitars,

angular bass and bludgeoning beat. Although a burgeoning romance has hit a couple speed-bumps, the soupedup arrangement still manages to accelerate around some hairpin turns. The muscular, twin guitar attack on the break blasts into the stratosphere adding a soupcon of Southern Boogie. Stuttery guitars, rumbling bass and pummeling drums manage to dirty up the pretty on “Champagne.” Lovelorn lyrics are less than effervescent, pining for a girl who “drinks champagne when she walks at night.” Luckily, a skittery guitar solo elevates this boozy lament. Three tracks deftly navigate the peaks and valleys of a doomed
romance. “Attraction” opens with a pile-driving beat, zig-zag bass and distorto guitars that recall the Raspberries classic, “Go All The Way.” Bypassing Tinder, the lyrics are up close and personal; “I wanna know what you are drinking, sit next to me Girl, because I’m the one.” That level of certitude is mirrored by the combustible guitar solo on the break. By “Situation Critical,” this guy is a ticking time-bomb of love. Slash and burn guitars connect with search and destroy bass lines and a meaty, beaty, big and bouncy drum tattoo. Clearly, consummation is just a shout away; “My heat seeker is locked on you, your radiation’s got me burning too/I can’t tell if it’s something that you did, I think it’s your spell, my phasers are set to sin.” But the bloom is definitely off the rose on “Baby, It’s You.” Yelp-y vocals ride roughshod over rat-a-tat guitar riffs, strafing bass lines and a rough and tumble rhythm. To paraphrase the Pretenders, “lust has definitely turned to anger.” Domestic discord escalates and takes a deadly turn; “It’s so cold and not worth the fight, Ah, but it’s alright, you’re chasing me down with a knife/Ah, but it’s alright, I’m bleeding all over your floor, all over your floor.” The best tracks stack right next to each other toward the end of side
two. “Break Me Down” has an AM Pop Radio shimmer that could easily sandwich between Badfinger’s “Baby Blue” and Cheap Trick’s “Surrender.” Downstroke guitars are matched by boomerang bass lines and a flickering kick-drum beat. The buoyant melody, razor-sharp instrumentation and the scorching guitar solo on the break nearly camouflage the lovesick angst of lyrics like “And I don’t find the need to believe that there is someone particular for me/Because everyone is mediocre and can’t compare to the water in your sea.” Crisp rhythm guitar riffs partner with ringing power chords, prowling bass and a crackling beat on “It’s Alright.” Even though it is, apparently, alright, the guys still offer some cautionary guidance; “Don’t set your soul just for the fiasco, take my advice, trust me when I say so,” right after scuzzy guitars hopscotch through the break. Finally, “U Should Be My Girl” opens with the (always thrilling) sound of a guitar plugging into an amp, as scattershot riffs collide with sweeter shang-a-lang flurries. Meanwhile, marauding bass and a blitzkrieg beat anchor the action. Despite the Princeified spelling of the personal pronoun “U,” the lyrics never follow through turning the “to” into a “2.” Still, teenage kicks can be had when “You come running to me, I come running to you, you came running to me and cried, you say I’m perfect for you.” They insistently repeat the title’s conceit until fuzzy guitar notes fade into the ether. Other interesting tracks include the cyclonic gale force of “Storm And Thunder.” The album closes with the Power Pop/Punk combo-platter of “Caught Me Off Guard.” Brittle and brutal in all the right ways, it features rapid-fire guitars, sinewy bass runs and brawny backbeat. The Reflectors debut is, as they say, all killer, no filler. These guys manage to distill their influences without ever sounding derivative or calculating. Monster hooks line up next to crunchy choruses and lacerating arrangements, the result is a heady musical brew. They go beyond making a good First Impression, and wind up making a lasting one.

THE VINO VOICE SUMMERTIME ITALIAN-STYLE L
ast week we reminisced on a trio of European wines that would likely be on the bucket list of any vino enthusiast. On the other side of vino ventures, there are so many fun and interesting wines around the world, it’s simply a thrill to get to taste and enjoy as many as we casually can. It’s the summertime and every white wine in town is fair game for us columnists to enlist the interest of our readers. In our hot valley, we’ve been traditionally and continually sucking up all the Sauvignon Blanc we can. And, as I’ve noticed in the past five years or so, the thirst-quenching Italian Pinot Grigio has also been selling at record numbers. Indeed—last year, the vast appellation of Delle Venezie DOC, that spans over 60,000 acres of vineyards in northeast Italy showed a 34% increase in sales of Pinot Grigio totaling 223 million bottles! Sorry to report, but personally, I’ve never been a big Pinot Grige fan. I’ve found the wine to be too light—surely refreshing of course, but just not enough oomf for me to desire the wine over other more complex white wines. But hey!—didn’t I just write a CV Weekly column titled “Love Story in the Time of Coronavirus”, wherein I heartily recommended the Love Story Pinot Grigio from Verona? Yes, I did and of course there is always some very good stuff out there that is clean, fresh, aromatic with enough nuance to be interesting and delicious. As one can discern by the title of this piece, however, our column will venture out to other vino venues of particular interest in the wine country of Italy. Many wine lovers these days are well aware of all the different red wines Italy offers. Ditto that for white
12
wines as well. Unfortunately, because of the vast amount of vini bianchi, we’re restrained by space, to highlight only a few that are easily obtainable here in the states. Starting with the northwest part of Italy known as the Piemonte wine region, the two local varieties that pleasantly come to mind are the Cortese grape that produces the wine with the fun pronunciation of Gavi di Gavi; and the Arneis [ahr-NAYSS] grape producing the little more difficult to say, Roero [ROY-ehthoe] DOC. Both mouthwatering wines are light to medium-bodied, dry not sweet, with citrusy acidity around orchard fruit and mineral flavors. The Arneis is the richer of the two focusing on almonds, apples and pears; the Gavi wines are lighter with a bit more acidity
BY RICK RIOZZA
of lemon and lime with minerality. If you’re planning to serve some savory summer platters of antipasto, cheeses, pasta salads, pizza, risotto, seafood, shellfish, veal, or vegetables, look to the Gavi and Roero. Gavi producers include Bergaglio, Broglia, Chianlo, La Giustiniana, La Scola, and Villa Spraina. For Roero DOC look for Vietti, Bruno Giacosa and Ceretto. When we stayed in the Tuscany town of Radda, while lunching, we enjoyed the two wonderful white wines which often get mixed up simply by their names: Vermentino and Vernaccia. Vermentino is an Italian western coast & Sardinian wine that is dry, medium-bodied, with high acidity but aromatic and fruity. It’s probably the sexiest choice to serve
with lobster and will also be a good match for summer pesto & pastas. Flavors include almonds, green apples, citrus, fennel, flowers, herbs, lemon, minerals, nuts, and tropical fruits. Sometimes you’ll even get a whisper of spritz in the beverage. The lovely full name of Vernaccia di San Gimignano [ver-NAH-chyah dee sahn jeemee-NYAH-noh] matches the beautiful ancient skyline and announces the aromatic dry medium-bodied white wine of Tuscany. Most of it is un-oaked and rather crisp; the acidity is medium to high, with similarities to a Macon Chardonnay but with brighter notes of apples, citrus peel, earth, flowers, ginger, herbs, lemons, nuts, tropical fruits, vanilla with a touch of bitter almond finish. One of our best memories of dining in Italy last year was—of course, experiencing the pizza of Napoli. Pizza Napoletana, originated in Naples way back when tomatoes where brought to Europe in the 16th century from Peru. This style of pizza is prepared with simple and fresh ingredients: a basic dough, raw tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, and olive oil. One of its defining characteristics is that there is often more sauce than cheese. No fancy toppings are allowed! And generally, the white wine served with Neapolitan pizza—especially during the warm day, is the chilled Falanghina [fah-lahnGHEE-nah]. The other two white wines you’ll also see on the table is the famed Fiano and the Greco di Tufo. These are the wines of the southern Italian region of Campania—that include Naples, Pompeii and the romantic Amalfi Coast. Falanghina is fun and an easy going quaff: light-bodied but with a fleshy palate of apricot, peach, pine, jasmine, pears, minerals and smoke (the tie-in to the pizza that’s been in a 900+ degree oven for a couple of minutes). Fiano is the region’s top-quality varietal that is richer than the Falanghina that accentuates hazelnuts in the flavor. The Greco is somewhat in between the two. Bevi e divertiti!! While I’ve been writing piece, I’ve also been sipping on—wait for it: a Pinot Grigio!—go figure. Anyway—I am heartily recommending this 2018 Masi Masianco Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie. Masi calls this wine the estate’s white “Supervenetian,” a wine of great personality. And a great personality it has!! It reminds me of a zesty New Zealand Sauvignon blanc without all the grass and cat pee. Masianco blends Pinot Grigio, cultivated in Friuli, with native Verduzzo grape, picked slightly overripe and mature. It’s a great pinot grige blend with bright and clean white fruit flavors, and, quite energetic in the buzz it provides! One can say it’s got some oomf to it! A treat and a tasty buy at around $14 or less. Saluti!

BREWTALITY
O
f all the beer styles to have undergone radical evolution over the past decade, none have experienced a bigger, more dramatic progression than the India Pale Ale. Conceived in the 18th century as an export beer, the first ales sent to the British colonies (including the ones in India) were actually October ale, described as strong, heavily hopped beer that would normally be aged like wine before drinking. This was a beer with similarities to what’s now known as barleywine, and while tasty, wasn’t really considered refreshing. Thus, began the first evolution of the IPA, as it was brightened, lightened, and made to be just alcoholic enough to survive months instead of years of storage. Once electricity and refrigeration became common, the style of IPA all but died out until it was revived by the burgeoning microbrew movement of the late 1970s. With hobbyists allowed to homebrew legally, a renaissance of beer began, with brewpubs and neighborhood micro-breweries gaining popularity for the first time in decades. By the early 1980s, breweries like Anchor, and Sierra Nevada had created hop forward pale ales that emphasized the citrusy notes of the Cascade hop. The 90’s evolved things further with Vinnie Cilurzo arguably brewing what’s considered the first double IPA, his original Blind Pig recipe. A substantially bitter ale that varied between 6.5-7% ABV, Blind Pig was more formidable than other IPAs of the era. Other breweries began to emulate Vinnie’s extreme style (which Vinnie claims he only started doing to hide the off flavors that came from using the antiquated brewing system he had), and the next thing you knew, a trend was evolving where every brewery wanted a bigger, stronger, hoppier ale in their portfolio. A company’s pale ale was usually between 5-6% ABV, their IPA would be between 6-7%, and anything bigger than that became known as a double IPA, or a DIPA for short. By the early 2000s, craft brewing had become an arms race, and hop loaded beers were some of the best weapons in a brewery’s arsenal. The triple IPA debuted in 2005 in the form of Pliny the Younger, which is still considered the best TIPA, and one of the very best beers in the world. So why aren’t more breweries trying to emulate this masterpiece of style? For the same reasons so few breweries make a barleywine, because they’re a pain in the ass. Triple IPAs like Pliny the Younger are very time consuming and very expensive beers to brew. They use an exorbitant
14

WHERE ARE ALL THE TRIPLE IPAS? BY AARON RAMSON
amount of raw material -hops and grain especially -and have a much lower yield ratio than other beers. Imagine if you wanted to use your coffee maker to create a cup of coffee three times stronger than your normal mug. Your Mr. Coffee is designed to brew up to 12 cups of regular coffee at a time, so If you wanted a cup of coffee with triple strength, you’d use the same amount of grounds that you’d use for a full pot, but only collect 4 cups of brewed coffee out of it so that each cup is a solution concentrated at a much higher strength. That is the same basic principle used for brewing beer. Your brewing system can only hold X amount of raw ingredients, whether its grain in a mash tun or coffee grounds in a Mr. Coffee basket. In order to strengthen your product without fortifying it, you have to concentrate the strength of your product. Triple IPAs take an exorbitant amount of raw material to make, including tremendous amounts of hops, which absorb beer into the vegetal matter as the volatile oils are released, further diminishing the amount of beer leftover at the end of the process. Also, fermenters need to house a big beer like a triple IPA for a longer time than other beers. Unlike high alcohol barleywines and stouts, TIPAs aren’t aged in barrels, meaning that tank space will be taken up for months until the beer is mature enough to package.
While these beers aren’t common, they’re not exactly rare either, and several breweries have a triple IPA that are loved by fans, and can be obtained from bottle shops quite readily. 1) The Waldos’ Special Ale - Lagunitas Brewing Co. An 11.7% monster from the
Heineken owned company, advertised as “the dankest and hoppiest beer ever brewed at Lagunitas. Carried in select Bevmo and Whole Foods Markets. 2) Power Plant - El Segundo Brewing Co. A 12.3% AVB behemoth of an IPA claims to taste like a fruit cocktail, and is deceptively easy to drink. Rated by many to be on par with Pliny the Younger. 3) Wolf Mother - Golden Road Brewing. This triple IPA is consistently given high marks for its resinous, yet quaffable characteristics. Parent company Anheuser-Busch means that Golden Road’s offerings have wide distribution, and can be obtained from most Total Wine and Bevmo stores. 4) Triple IPA – Claremont Craft Ales. Formerly known as Triple Dude, this 10.2% IPA is one of the very few brewed in Southern California’s inland empire. Known to be a bit boozy at times, this is a brew that consistently is lauded for big flavor. 5) Triple Play - Strike Brewing Company. San Jose’s Strike Brewing offers this 11% heavyweight yearround, packing each batch with Citra, Amarillo, Mosaic, and Simcoe hops. Redolent with tropical fruit flavors, Triple Play can be found in select Bevmo and Total Wine locations.

OBI WAN: A NEW HOPE
C
OULD A SEVERELY INJURED LEG STOP OBI WAN FROM RUNNING TOWARD A NEW LIFE? THANKS TO YOU THE ANSWER IS “NO”. Was he hit by a car? Was he abused and then discarded? Did someone drop him off by the roadside because they could not afford vet care? We will never know his past, but the “FORCE” was with him once Loving All Animals came to the rescue. Obi tells his amazing story: “I laid by the side of the road on a cold
winter night, shivering and terrified, trying to drag my body from the path of oncoming cars. My right front leg would not move, and the searing pain spread from my neck to my paw. It was December 24, Christmas Eve. “Finally, a pair of headlights stopped in front of me. A woman walked towards me, and I heard her make a phone call about me. Soon a nice woman in a uniform arrived and gently placed me in her truck.
She told me I was safe. We drove to a building where a woman in a white coat met us. She gave me some medicine to relieve the pain and did some tests. The people there nicknamed me “Wags” because I constantly wagged my tail to thank them. They said I had Radial Nerve Injury which could heal on its own, but if it did not heal I would lose my leg. “The next day I went to the Desert Hot Springs Animal Care Center shelter. The people there named me “Obi Wan” after the legendary Jedi Master in Star Wars. My new name made feel important, and I understood I was destined to help other homeless animals. “There were other dogs at the shelter, and I watched some of them happily leave when their humans came for them. When the days passed and my family never came, I lost hope and hung my head in sadness. “One day a volunteer with Loving All Animals came to get me. I liked the name of that group! She drove me to meet Jan Cooksley who was my foster Mom. My first night there, Jan slept on the floor with me so I wouldn’t feel so alone. Jan’s wonderful home was so much better than being in a

kennel. My leg was wrapped, but I loved going for short walks with Jan and Andre. “I went to visit a man in a white coat at Desert Dunes Animal Hospital. He looked grim when he said my leg would have to be amputated. I returned for the surgery, and I wagged my tail to tell everyone that it would be okay. I understood that good things would come after this hardship. But I didn’t like the plastic thing they put around my neck, and they ignored me when I promised not to bite my stitches. Thankfully Loving All Animals paid my vet bill. Soon I walked so well that I forgot about my missing leg until one of Jan’s friends called me a ‘Tripod’. “One day in February, Jan and I went for a car ride. I worried when I saw Jan had tears in her eyes. We drove to Loving All Animals, and Connie Carter was there to greet me. I met Connie once before at Loving All Animals; she told Tracy she

wanted to adopt me no matter what happened with my leg. I suddenly realized Connie was now my “furever” Mom. “Connie’s two other dogs were jealous when I arrived, but now Peanut, Mona, and I have fun playing. I run almost as fast as they do. I live joyfully in the moment surrounded by my toys, my wonderful sibling pups, and lots of love from Connie. I have a zest for life that comes from surviving tough times. “Like the legendary Jedi Master, I feel gifted in the ways of the Force. I hope people will consider adopting a “special needs” dog when they see how much fun I have. I hope more homeless animals get the wonderful foster care and vet care that Loving All Animals provided me. I hope more humans receive the gifts of comfort and joy that come from having a ‘second chance’ animal in their home. My heart swells with love and gratitude for the animal heroes who were part of my journey, including the generous people who donate to and support Loving All Animals.” (You can donate to Loving All Animals through their website www. lovingallanimals.org or mail a check to Loving All Animals, 83496 Avenue 51, Coachella, CA 92236). ocal CV theater managers have predicted their venues will be open for business by the end of the month. Check this page for updates. Exactly what this means to the film fan remains unclear. Theater managers have yet to respond to my calls and emails. What feature films are scheduled to b shown and what precautions will be taken for the safety of customers? Will all seats in all theaters be reserved in advance? And will actual seating be spaced according to state and CDC guidelines? In an informal survey among friends and fellow movie buffs, it is clear that the majority of moviegoers do NOT feel safe in a crowded theater even when or if customers are wearing masks. In the meantime, we have adjusted well to our private home theaters – many with large hi-res LED screens and superior sound. Here then are three titles that might be worth a look while you are debating whether or not to step outside and attend a big screen event. By far the most anticipated film is Tenet, Christopher Nolan’s big budget ($200 M) mind-bending sci-fi thriller. Here are the top twenty films and shows we bought, rented and or streamed this last week. The Invisible Man (Universal, 2020), Sonic the Hedgehog (Paramount), Jumanji: The Next Level (Sony), Yellowstone: S1 (Paramount), Birds of Prey: Harley Quinn (WB), The Hunt (Universal), Bad Boys for Life (Sony), 1917 (Universal), Bloodshot (Sony, 2020), Yellowstone: S2 (Paramount), The Call of the Wild (Disney, 2020), The Gentlemen (STX/ Universal, 2019), Star Wars: Episode IX – Skywalker (Disney), Spies in Disguise (Fox), Fantasy Island (Sony, 2020),

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST: The Story of Fire Saga
Surprisingly made in cooperation with Eurovision, it's that rare work that both mocks and honors (I think) its subject. Admittedly, there's a pinch of infectious charm to some of what works about Eurovision not unlike the international competition itself. More tribute than parody, this overproduced amalgam of buffoonery, slapstick and cheese is a gaseous soufflé of mediocrity. Rachel McAdams is adorable and appears to be an accomplished vocalist in places. Netflix
Writer-director Jon Stewart’s lightweight comedy about what happens when a small Wisconsin town becomes the main attraction in this satire -- or is it a parody? -- of our crazy, unpredictable and volatile political circus. Hard to tell. There’s not really anything new here. One might assume this comedy is a jab at the current administration. It is not. After the Democrat's top strategist Gary Zimmer (Steve Carell) sees a video of a retired Marine Colonel Jack Hastings (Chris Cooper) standing up for the rights of his town's undocumented workers, Gary believes he has found the key to winning back the Heartland. However, when the Republicans counter him by sending in his brilliant nemesis Faith (Rose Byrne), what started out as a local race quickly becomes an out-of-control and sometimes hilarious fight for the soul of America. Amazon prime. I’LL BE GONE IN THE DARK Based on the current bestseller of the same name, this incredibly gripping film explores writer Michelle McNamara's
obsessive investigation into the dark and highly disturbing world of a violent predator she dubbed the Golden State Killer. Terrorizing California in the 1970s and '80s, the Golden State Killer was responsible for at least 50 homeinvasion rapes and 12 murders. The main thing about this series is that it gives voice to the survivors and their families, during an era when sex crimes were often dismissed or hidden in shame. This timely inquiry into our macabre preoccupation with true crime is at heart a cautionary tale of the deadly allure of addiction. But it’s also a spellbinding meditation on obsession and loss, chronicling two stories unfolding on parallel tracks. One is the unrelenting path of a mysterious killer and the other is a look at the fierce determination of one woman to bring the case to light. This extraordinary documentary series is highly recommended. HBO. robin@coachellavalleyweekly.com

MID-YEAR POINT FOR STOCKS
I
t is hard to believe but 2020 is half over. Where the first quarter of 2020 was the worst for stocks in history, the second quarter was equally breathtaking in its recovery. While Main Street struggles with historic unemployment levels only months after some of the best employment numbers on record, the stock market is also a mix of extremes. Where Apple, Microsoft and Amazon are valued at more than $1 trillion each, airlines, oil companies, restaurants, and tourism-related businesses teeter on the edge of insolvency. A look inside the numbers gives us some idea as to what has been going on and where we might find investments that will outperform. If we start by looking at all stocks globally, about 60% are US-based, 15% are Chinesebased and the rest of the world makes up the remaining 25%. The remainder is primarily in developed countries like those in Europe, Australia or Japan. Emerging Market countries include China, Russia, Brazil and India. So far in 2020, Chinese stocks have performed best, up 5.5% from the end of 2019. Over the last three years, Chinese stocks have posted a 10% annualized return – the best in the world. Coming in a close second is the U.S. market, up 9% per year although the U.S. is down 6% in 2020. Developed markets excluding the U.S. are up less than 1% annually over the last three
years and are down 12% for 2020 while emerging markets except for China have been the worst investment over both periods with negative returns. Looking at the U.S. markets, the Technology sector has outperformed all other business segments. Over the last three years, technology stocks (i.e. Microsoft) are up 22% annually. So far in 2020, technology stocks are up 12% with mega-caps like Microsoft and Apple. Consumer cyclicals (i.e. Amazon, Home Depot) are up 13% annually and 2% for 2020 while healthcare and consumer staples (Walmart, McDonalds) stocks have averaged an 8% annual growth. The worst performing sector by far has been Energy which is down 43% on an annualized basis over the last three years while being down 40% for 2020. Financial stocks like banks have been flat for the last three years while falling 22% so far in 2020. As the U.S. government has instructed banks to stop stock buybacks and limit dividends to no more than 30%

f you had 1/5th on the 4th, and got arrested for a DUI over the July 4th weekend, then remember you do not just have to appear in court on the date on the yellow citation you were given when arrested. You also have to deal with the Department of Motor Vehicles. An arrest for a DUI kicks in two separate proceedings....... the Court and a DMV hearing. A DMV "administrative per se" hearing presumes a driver is per se under the influence if the DUI CHEMICAL RESULTS (PAS aka Preliminary Alcohol Screening or Blood test), shows the driver to be .08 or higher. If you are stopped for a possible DUI, in order to save your California Driver's License or driving privileges, your lawyer must request a DMV hearing within TEN (10) DAYS. You should also REQUEST A DMV IDENTIFICATION CARD at the same time as you will need some form of proof with a picture during this process! The 10 day time limit begins running from the issuance/arrest date on the Pink Order of Suspension/Temporary Driver's License known as the Administrative Per Se form. This is true whether you have a California Driver's License or an out of state driver's license. The Administrative Per Se/Order of Suspension/ Temporary Driver's License Endorsement is

of income, support for these stocks may be difficult to find until we fully emerge from the global shutdown. Another area with emerging weakness includes commercial and apartment complex real estate. Due to the massive issuance of debt by governments around the world, it should come as no surprise that Gold has been one of the best performing assets classes in 2020, up 15% with a 3 year annualized growth rate of 12%. Within the universe of stocks, companies are designated as growth companies, value companies or a blend of both. Over the last three years, large cap growth companies are up 19% annually while mid-cap growth companies are up 17% and small cap growth companies are up 10%. Small cap value companies are down 8% a year over that period followed by mid-cap value at -4% and small cap blend companies at -2%. These numbers tell us are that the largest and best funded technology companies are increasingly dominating their smaller
counterparts. Countries like China and the United States are increasingly dominating world markets. Looking at a post-pandemic world, can these trends continue? It seems clear that technology and healthcare will continue to do better than most other business sectors in the new world order. Chinese companies may underperform as countries around the world look to bring the production of critical medicines and other key supplies closer to home. Given the strength of the U.S. equity and debt markets, we can expect these better funded U.S. companies to outperform their smaller rivals. We can expect those with less access to capital or heavy debt burdens to underperform. Business sectors like banking, tourism, entertainment, oil and commercial real estate are most likely to underperform. Countries with a lower educated workforce and lower access to the debt markets can be expected to lag their better educated and funded counterparts. LEGAL REPRESENTATION OF THE INJURED & CRIMINALLY ACCUSED
the 8 x 10 PINK DMV form PS360 (sometimes white) that the officer gave you when he/ she took your license. It gives you the right to drive for 30 days before your right to drive in California is suspended for 4-5 months. This Pink Temporary Driver's License Endorsement is good for only 30 days from the issue date. If the DMV hearing is requested within 10 days, your driving privileges can be extended by having your attorney request a STAY, which freezes the suspension. The suspension is thus delayed until the outcome of your DMV hearing in about 60 days. After requesting a stay, you receive a white piece of paper which is a Temporary Driver's License via mail...and it will be sent to the address on your license. It is only valid for the time listed on the paper. Most arrestees do not realize that a DUI creates 2 SEPARATE PROCEEDINGS that both must be addressed and not confused. One is the Court and the other is the DMV administrative per se hearing. The outcome of one does not necessarily affect the other. When DMV suspends your license, it is for a four month period. If you ask for a restricted license, the suspension is for 5 months. Sometimes, we have clients who enter a plea in Court to something BEFORE the DMV hearing. Even though the court does
not suspend your license as part of the plea, the court will notify DMV that the driver pled to a DUI or reckless etc., and that the driver is sentenced to attend a drinking driving program. That notification will trigger a letter from DMV in Sacramento called an Order of Suspension. The Order of Suspension is for 6 months. If the court orders you into a Drinking driving program, you will have to show them your California DMV Identification Card. Do not rely on a telephone call to DMV alone... let your lawyer make the request. It is wellknown that when the DMV employee tells you, "You'll be contacted later", that something will go wrong. All drivers with a DUI should go to DMV a week or two after the arrest to request a printout of their DMV driving record. You will need to show this to the Riverside County Drinking Driving Program if you are ordered to attend a DUI class. "Though I am sometimes referred to as a DUI criminal defense lawyer, I choose to not view my clients as ‘criminals’. I prefer to view them and more importantly to treat them as good, honest people that have found themselves in a scary and unfortunate situation." I look upon my job as protecting the
Constitutional Rights of every American who drinks and drives and gets arrested for a DUI. I do however "Change Hats" when I SUE Drunk Drivers for damages to my Injured or Deceased (Wrongful Death) clients. ash your hands. Don’t risk losing them.” That’s a key message behind a new fireworks video from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), which reinforces the dangers of consumer fireworks. According to NFPA’s latest fireworks report, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 19,500 fires caused by fireworks in 2018, while U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 9,100 non-occupational fireworks related injuries. NFPA is encouraging media outlets to share this new video to help reduce the collective damage incurred by consumer fireworks, particularly as public displays have been canceled this year, and to ease the burden on first responders and emergency room workers who are on the frontlines of COVID-19.

REST AND PLAN
Y
www.coachellavalleyweekly.com
BY BRONWYN ISON
ou’ve heard the saying, “No rest for the weary.” In other words, keep working although you’re tired. Rather, I’m advocating the antithesis. I believe a well organized plan requires you to be rested. If you find you’re running on empty, it’s likely you’re burning the candle at both ends. Fulfilling your purpose may be a daunting task if you keep on with this lifestyle. Right now, more than ever, is the best time to get a plan. Once you devise a plan, placing into action should be your next step forward. With the increasing and incredible amount of uncertainty, educating yourself for your future can be a great first step. Whether or not your self-employed or work for someone, it’s a good idea to remain a student of life. With this being said, this may be your opportunity to dive into a hobby you’ve always wanted to take up or a great time to reevaluate your business. One of the best steps I’ve made is reevaluating my personal, emotional, physically financial, and spiritual life. Journaling can be cathartic. Expelling your thoughts and feelings on paper can be helpful in setting goals for your future. Research tells us, writing our goals down can enable one to see more clearly. Personally, I’ve been able to understand certain friendships better in my life. Emotionally, I’m doing my best to have faith during these tribulations. Physically, I’ve taken advantage of this time to be in the best
shape of my life. Financially, I’ve narrowed my wants and I’ve focused more on my needs. Lastly, spiritually, I’m healthy because I devote my time to what feeds my soul. Resting is important for a variety of reasons. But, before I share why, know that resting does not mean that you are lazy. I’m just as guilty as anyone else, I used to feel if I wasn’t doing something then I must not be very motivated. Negate this thought process. Actually, you can be far more productive if you’re rested. The brain needs time to rest as does your body. My resting time is spent praying and meditating. For you it may be reading a good book, putting together a puzzle or watching a movie. Whatever, you choose to do… resting is necessary for your overall health. Starting a plan can be a challenging task. If you’re unsure about how to start, get a piece of paper and a pen. Devise your plan into separate columns, personal, emotional, financial, physical and spiritual. Make two columns for each, pro’s and con’s. There is no specific way of doing this but it will help weigh out what is important and what you can release. Once you know what you can release, you can start moving forward with a plan. It doesn't need to be perfect. Just get started. The journey is yours and you hold the key. Rest and plan. Bronwyn Ison is the Founder of EvolveYogaOnline.com bronwyn@e-volveyoga.com

FREEWILL ASTROLOGY
WEEK OF JULY 2
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Aries author Marge Piercy writes, "The people I love the best, jump into work head first without dallying in the shallows." The Aries people I love best will do just that in the coming days. Now is not the right time to wait around passively, lazily hoping that something better will come along. Nor is it prudent to procrastinate or postpone decisions while shopping around for more options or collecting more research. Dive, Aries, dive! TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Calvin and Hobbes is a comic strip by Bill Watterson. It features a boy named Calvin and his stuffed tiger Hobbes. In the first panel of one story, Calvin is seated at a school desk looking perplexed as he studies a question on a test, which reads "Explain [Isaac] Newton's First Law of Motion in your own words." In the second panel, Calvin has a broad smile, suddenly imbued with inspiration. In the third panel, he writes his response to the test question: "Yakka foob mog. Grug pubbawup zink wattoom gazork. Chumble spuzz." The fourth panel shows him triumphant and relaxed, proclaiming, "I love loopholes." I propose that you use this scenario as your victorious metaphor in the coming weeks, Taurus. Look for loopholes! And use them to overcome obstacles and solve riddles. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): "It is a fault to wish to be understood before we have made ourselves clear to ourselves," wrote philosopher and activist Simone Weil. I'm hoping that this horoscope of mine can help you avoid that mistake. In the coming weeks and months, you will have a stronger-thanusual need to be seen for who you really are—to have your essential nature be appreciated and understood by people you care about. And the best way to make sure that happens is to work hard right now on seeing, appreciating, and understanding yourself. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Some readers wish I would write more like Cormac McCarthy or Albert Camus or Raymond Chandler: with spare simplicity. They accuse me of being too lush and exuberant in my prose. They want me to use shorter sentences and fewer adjectives. To them I say: It ain't going to happen. I have feelings similar to those of bestselling Cancerian author Oliver Sacks, who the New York Times called, "one of the great clinical writers of the 20th century." Sacks once said, "I never use one adjective if six seem to me better and, in their cumulative effect, more incisive. I am haunted by the density of reality and try to capture this with 'thick description.'" I bring these thoughts to your attention, my fellow Cancerian, because I think it's important for you to be your lavish, sumptuous, complex self in the coming weeks. Don't oversimplify yourself or dumb yourself down, either intellectually or emotionally. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Travel writer Paul Theroux has journeyed long distances by train: once from Britain to Japan and back again, and then from Massachusetts to Argentina. He also rode trains during part of his expedition from Cairo to Cape Town. Here's one of his conclusions: "It is almost axiomatic that the worst trains take you through magical places." I'd like to offer a milder version of that counsel as your metaphor for the coming weeks: The funky, bumpy, rickety influences will bring you the best magic. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Philosopher Miguel de Unamuno declared, "Everything that exalts and expands consciousness is good, while that which depresses and diminishes it is evil." This idea will be intensely true for and applicable to you in the coming weeks, Virgo. It will be your sacred duty—both to yourself and to those you care about—to enlarge your understandings of how the world works and to push your awareness to become more inclusive and empathetic. What's your vision of paradise-onearth? Now is a good time to have fun imagining it. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): What do you want to be when you grow up, Libra? What's that you say? You firmly believe you are already all grown up? I hope not! In my vision of your destiny, you will always keep evolving and transforming; you will ceaselessly

transcend your existing successes and push on to accomplish further breakthroughs and victories. Now would be an excellent time to rededicate yourself to this noble aspiration. I invite you to dream and scheme about three specific wonders and marvels you would like to experience during the next five years. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren has advice that would serve you well in the coming weeks. She says, "Keep a little space in your heart for the improbable. You won't regret it." In accordance with your astrological potentials, I'm inclined to amend her statement as follows: "Keep a sizable space in your heart for the improbable. You'll be rewarded with catalytic revelations and intriguing opportunities." To attract blessings in abundance, Scorpio, be willing to set aside some of your usual skepticism and urge for control. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Author Malidoma Somé lives in the U.S. now, but was born in the West African country of Burkina Faso. He writes, "In the culture of my people, the Dagara, we have no word for the supernatural. The closest we come to this concept is Yielbongura, 'the thing that knowledge can't eat.' This word suggests that the life and power of certain things depend upon their resistance to the categorizing knowledge that human beings apply to everything." I bring Somé's thoughts to your attention, Sagittarius, because I suspect that in the coming weeks, you will encounter more than the usual number of experiences that knowledge can't eat. They might at times be a bit spooky or confounding, but will mostly be interesting and fun. I'm guessing that if you embrace them, they will liberate you from overly literal and materialistic ideas about how the world works. And that will be good for your soul. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Pioneer Capricorn scientist Isaac Newton is often hailed as one of history's greatest geniuses. I agree that his intellectual capacities were sublime. But his emotional intelligence was sparse and feeble. During the time he taught at Cambridge University, his talks were so affectless and boring that many of his students skipped most of his classes. I'll encourage you to make Newton your anti-role model for the next eight weeks. This time will be favorable for you to increase your mastery of three kinds of intelligence beyond the intellectual kind: feeling, intuition, and collaboration. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): When future writer (and Aquarius) Charles Dickens was 12 years old, his parents and siblings got incarcerated in a debtors' prison. To stay alive and help his family, he took a job working 12 hours a day, six days a week, pasting labels on pots of boot polish in a rotting, rat-infested warehouse. Hard times! Yet the experiences he had there later provided him with rich material for the novels that ultimately made him wealthy and beloved. In predicting that you, too, will have future success at capitalizing on difficulty, I don't mean to imply you've endured or will endure anything as harsh as Dickens' ordeal. I'm just hoping to help you appreciate the motivating power of your challenging experiences. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Maybe you feel that the ongoing pandemic has inhibited your ability to explore and deepen intimacy to the degree that would like to. But even if that's the case, the coming weeks will provide openings that could soften and remedy your predicament. So be extra receptive and alert to the clues that life reveals to you. And call on your imagination to look for previously unguessed and unexpected ways to reinvent togetherness and tenderness. Let's call the next three weeks your Season of Renewing Rapport. Homework: Decide on three special words that will from now on serve as magic spells for you. Keep them secret! Don't even tell me.
