T

here is a long tradition of celebrating Independence Day on July fifth. Back in 1779 the fourth of July fell on a Sunday, so the country celebrated on the fifth,” said Councilman Russell Betts, regarding a city sponsored Independence Day event that will take place on July fifth. “So Saturday is the perfect day for the community to come out and celebrate without having to race home on Friday. After all this city has been through, we need time to relax and have some fun.” Free fireworks and music will fill the air at the corner of Mission Lakes Boulevard and Little Morongo Road. Here, where once a framed and partially stuccoed-building complex languished for years deteriorating in the sun and wind during the financial fiasco, has now been reborn. After three and a half years and a $3.5 million renovation and reconstruction, the Mission Lakes Market Place has chosen July fifth to celebrate its grand opening. Sponsored by the city and paid with all private contributions, the professional pyrotechnic show will be the first city fireworks display in years. “There will be hot dog, hamburger and Mexican food vendors,” said Dr. Suresh Shah, owner of the mall and the new Desert Hot Springs 5 Star Elite Fitness. “We’ll be serving $2 beer and wine at our fitness juice bar. Dollar for soda and water.” Shah said everything is set at a minimum cost and proceeds from all drinks will go to the local Boys and Girls Club. The ribbon cutting for the shopping center begins at 5:30. The live music starts at 6:30. The fireworks blast off at 9:00 for a 20-minute show. Classic rock and dance band, Gin Piston, will play until 10:00 pm. Local teen talent from Desert Hot Springs Got Talent Contest will perform twice during the night. Everyone attending is encouraged to bring lawn chairs to comfortably enjoy the evening’s celebration. “The mayor and city council were all on board and extremely helpful and supportive,” said Shah. “I hope to do this event every year. I want to make sure “

people really enjoy it.” Dr. Shah is a Palm Desert real estate developer who owns office buildings, malls and apartment complexes in the valley. Other CV malls Shah built are Wall Street West, Morning Star Plaza, Orical Plaza and South West Plaza. He has lived in the desert since 1982 and practiced medicine for 20 years. He was chief anesthesiologist at JFK Memorial Hospital before going into real estate. Shah owns two 5 Star Elite Fitness centers with a third to be built in Palm Desert (next to the Ruth Chris Steakhouse). Shah is currently going through the approval process. For $150 monthly fee, everything is included: state of the art Italian equipment with high end video monitors, top rated trainers, full use of spa facilities, linen and amenities, all classes like Yoga and Pilates, tanning booths and childcare. All locations have a juice bar. Coffee and tea are free. The DHS fitness center has been open for several months and already has over 500 enrolled members! Future plans for the charming Spanish style Mission Lakes Market Place include a gas station with mini-mart, two restaurants with outdoor fireside eating, six food court take-out spaces for quick dining with a shaded patio area and fountain. Already signed to the property are two real estate offices, a hair and a nail salon and a video technician from Los Angles who installs high-end audio video equipment. “Things are coming into place,” said Shah. “We have 20 to 25 suites and the community is very excited to see what businesses are coming.” Shah is enthusiastic when talking about the potential for businesses and what it means to the city. He talks about meeting the community’s needs with jobs, tax revenue and business as though he lived across the street. The Mission Lakes Market Place, situated in the north-west part of town, has 67,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. Shah expects to invest another million dollars in improvements for incoming tenants. When the shopping center is full,

over one hundred jobs will be created and $1,000,000 is expected to be generated in tax revenue, which will benefit the city. “We are excited to celebrate the grand opening of the Mission Lakes shopping center with the owner Dr. Shah,” said Heather Coladonato, Desert Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce President. “And we are happy to celebrate the Independence Day Weekend with the city of Desert Hot Springs.” Desert Hot Springs Mayor Adam Sanchez will attempt to cut the ribbon with really big scissors. Shah bought the property for $1.5 million in 2010. He has personally overseen the work and appreciates all the support the city has shown. Shah is paying for the fireworks show and expects two to three

thousand people to come to the holiday festivities. He made flyers himself and posted them around the city. “It’s a chance for everybody to take they’re minds off their troubles and just have a good party,” said Betts. “This mall sat as an eye sore for five years. And to have this done now, it is an absolutely beautiful shopping center. We are hoping people will come out and get a good look at it to see what a gem we have.” This free fireworks event takes place at the Mission Lakes Market Place located at 64949 Mission Lakes Boulevard. Bring your friends and family to celebrate this Independence Day weekend event with the good people of Desert Hot Springs. And don’t forget your lawn chairs.

Tilted Kilt’s Independence Day Celebration and R Buckle Road Band CD Release Party!

A

long with their perfect, climate controlled, cool misty view of the COD fireworks display on their patio, Tilted Kilt, Palm Desert, will be unleashing it’s arsenal of memory making fun as they celebrate American Independence Day this weekend. Both Friday and Saturday are poised to bring out your attitude of gratitude for American freedom, as you shake your country lovin’ groove thing to a live band or DJ, while partaking in the full bar, gut busting menu, eye candy and assorted entertainment. Friday, July 4: Get to the Kilt early for a seat on the patio viewing of fireworks. Just afterwards, starting at 9 pm, the 2014 Coachella Valley Music Awards, Best Country Band, R Buckle Road, will be taking the stage inside with their all Americana Country Rock and Roll shenanigans. In between the live music, DJ LF will be playing favorites for your listening and bust-amoving pleasure. R Buckle Road is a local, eight piece band that has been winning people over for a few years now in the Coachella Valley and throughout California. You’ll even find fans as far as Nevada. RBR (R Buckle Road) is earning the respect and loyalty of those in love with the country music genre and even those who are not, with their homespun tunes that capture relate-able themes, both fun and serious, within a seasoned rock backdrop. They have been one of the few country bands featured at the Whiskey A’ Go Go in Hollywood, and can be heard on Brad Mercer’s Bands and Fans on Kix Hot Country 92.1 and 96.3 Radio. As a member of the band myself, I am honored to be among so many seasoned professionals, but the best part is, they’re just plain fun. While it is true that not everyone loves country music, the numbers of people following this band are increasing with every performance. I don’t think we’ve

played a single gig where I don’t have at least one person come up to me and say, “I don’t usually like country music, but I like you guys.” I think a lot of it is because underneath the honest, down to earth, themes, hooky lyrics and good-natured fun, is a whole lot of musicality – aka good old fashioned Americana rock and roll. R Buckle Road is fronted by Greg Vincent, a prolific and experienced songwriter, who had postponed his pursuit of his music dreams to take care of business for his family. Having spent his season in Nashville, writing in the music city’s circles, shopping songs and even having some picked up by other artists, Vincent has a knack of penning songs that are extremely palatable to the ear; memorable without being overly commercial making them very easy to like the first time you hear them. Combine that with his charismatic personality and charm, Vincent could easily be a solo artist. But he has hand chosen one hell of a band to back him up. The fact that each of these members also writes, gives this group a huge stock pile of songs to entertain with. “Since the very beginning, R Buckle Road has been evolving as musicians, songwriters and performers,” says Vincent. “Almost four years later, it is no different; we continue to evolve, but are in a place where we deserve to be heard! A very good time is sure to be had by all!” The Pedersens, Mike, lead guitar and backing vocals, his brother Larry, acoustic guitar, harmonica and vocals, and his wife Cat, percussion and vocals, have been making music together since they were teenagers. “I started playing music in a Dixieland band with my brother Mike when I was 10,” reminisced Larry Pedersen. “We played 3 nights a week at a pizza parlor, and a few shows at Knott’s Berry Farm. At 15, I was asked to join the Young Americans (a group credited as being the first “show

choir”). That’s where I met my wife, Cat; we were on a 3 month USA tour. There were two Australian tours and one far East and Japan tour. We also did shows around LA including the Hollywood Bowl.” Later, Mike Pedersen worked as road manager for a touring show group that Cat and Mike were a part of. “In 1975 Mike, Cat and I put together a trio and played in Japan for 6 months,” Larry shared. “From then until 1984, we worked together and apart in various bands until 1997. Cat and I moved to Palm Desert and started playing as a duo, and eventually as a trio with Mike as Meltdown.” Mike Pedersen, would eventually become part of RBR and bring his family along for the ride, while the trio still perform regularly at Palm Desert Country Club. “I prefer to think of RBR as more of a ‘project’ than a band in the traditional sense,” shared Mike Pedersen. “However, as a band, I can say that for me it’s about telling stories; stories of our lives and experiences and telling them in a way that the listener stays engaged and perhaps gains some benefit for their own life. Let’s face it, we are a bunch of old guys playing at a young guys game. We’re supposed to have acquired some wisdom by now; we need to bring more to the table than just beer, trucks and done me wrong whining.” (Amen brother Mike) Holding up the seriously strong rhythmic foundation of the band is Carl Agnello. “I picked up my first pair of drum sticks at age 9 and I haven’t stopped. I have played in more bands than I can remember – everything from rock, blues to tribute bands. Now I have the pleasure of being part of R Buckle Road. This is more than a band; it’s family and I couldn’t be happier.” When asked his thoughts on the new CD, Carl states simply, “ RBR’s live CD validates that yes, this much fun with this many talented and passionate people, might just oughta be against the law.” Carl’s wife, Carolyn, has been a lovely addition as the band’s personal photographer to whom we credit our great selection of photographs. The newest members of the band are Bob (bass) and Lindy Bingham (vocals and

sax), husband and wife and friends for about 3 decades. Bob’s first interaction with R Buckle Road was when he was brought in to record and mix the celebrated Live at the Date Shed, R Buckle Road album. And since he and his lovely wife are such strong musicians and entertainers in their own rite, it seemed only logical to bring them into the family. And it is a perfect fit. Now R Buckle Road has even more depth to their vocal bench and just may be the only country band within 300 miles with a saxophone. Prior to RBR, Lindy and Bob have played in dozens of bands together since they met, including classic rock and blues cover bands, rock tribute bands and an original blues band (The Lindy Bingham Band). Bob, who has been a bass player for as long as he can remember, writes, records, and produces music of all kinds whenever possible. Lindy, songwriter, sax player and vocalist, has an original blues CD of her own and shares recording credits with several well-known artists like Manfred Mann (Blinded by the Light and Mighty Quinn) and Andy Qunta of Icehouse. As Lindy puts it, “We’re both surprised to find ourselves in a country band, and are happy as hogs in horse %!*# that it’s R Buckle Road!” Then there’s me, Lisa Lynn Morgan. I feel very much the same way Lindy and Bob do, thought this isn’t my first country band or

“rodeo” for that matter. A desert dirt girl by birth, the first person to pay any notable attention to my singing was Frank Sinatra himself, at midnight mass. I was 11 and nervously (ever so nervously) sang The Little Drummer Boy with Mama and Frank Sinatra in attendance. As he ushered his mom out of St. Louis’ Catholic Church, he stopped, patted my cheek, and told me, “Keep singing from the heart kid. Nice job.” I’ve been trying to do just that ever since. I continued singing around the desert for audiences at local country clubs and downtown venues in Palm Springs as a teenager and had a Christian rock band in high school, writing, playing piano and singing, eventually going to school on a music scholarship from Azusa Pacific University. I’ve played with different bands in central California opening for bands like Tower of Power, Gary Allan, Rhett Akins and The Bellamy Brothers to name a few. When I was invited to sing with the New Christy Minstrels in Oakhurst, my love for country, blue grass, American folk music and good old fashioned harmonies was firmly planted. I ultimately landed on Laughlin and Las Vegas stages, such as the Stardust, Harrah’s, The Flamingo, the Riviera, and the Monte Carlo to name a few, but found that I couldn’t keep my promise to Frankie singing pop covers in the Strip environment. I retired in ‘99 never to sing

July 3 to July 9, 2014 again, but here I am. Blessed beyond words, the passion has been re-lit with much thanks due to the very special people I get to share the stage with in R Buckle Road. On July 4th, the Tilted Kilt has been gracious enough to let us turn this day into a celebration of Independence as well as the release of RBR’s first Live Album. The CD of all original songs was recorded at the Date Shed last September, and is chalked full of songs written by Greg Vincent, Mike Pedersen and Larry Pedersen. Mike Pederson puts it best: “When a musician hears a recording of their performance, it can be a life altering event. Sometimes confirming suspicions that one should ‘not quit the day job’, or conversely, that one is on the right track and simply needs to work hard and long at the craft of music. I believe the latter is what RBR has already gained from this first recorded offering. Six months after the live recording we are a different band; some change in personnel, more individual practicing perhaps, and mostly, a renewed commitment to our music and the road we’ve chosen.” We’ll have CD’s and other RBR contraband on hand Friday night. Very importantly, we will be giving a FREE CD to any member of the military, past or present as well as to the families of those bearing the burden of sacrifice along with them. We want to respectfully and gratefully honor the ones who answer the tough call that preserves the ideal of American independence, and allows us to live, as the RBR song goes, the “American Dream”. July 5th: Enjoy an Independence Day Festival for a mere $5 cover. Tilted Kilt will be providing games and entertainment indoors as well as outdoors in the cool, misted patio with a carnival themed party. Inside, they’ll be pulling out all the stops on sound and lighting with Hip-Hop, EDM, Latin, and top 40 DJ mixes all night. Outdoors, you can play your favorite carnival games with a dunk tank, bungee pull, high striker, ring toss, kissing booth, cotton candy and vodka snow cones. Come in early and join them for the UFC 175 on 40 screens. Pre-sale tickets for the festival can be purchased at www.fe5t. com. LADIES OF PALM SPRINGS T hree lovely ladies, each elite, professional singers, personalities and actresses in their own rite, are being brought together to entertain the masses for a free show at Georgie’s Alibi Azul Patio Restaurant. These classy lasses are sure to make the desert night even hotter for this venue known for diverse and consistent entertainment offerings as well as their fantastic tapas inspired lounge and bar. These musical ladies are Eve Holmes, Allison Annalora and Carol Kamenis. Eve Holmes: I heard about this event from my first class friend who has been a constant support to the music of many throughout the desert. Eve is a woman of many passions and pursuits. “My first love is actually traveling,” shared Eve to my surprise. “I was just in Spain and Italy,” she beamed. “Then of course, dancing and then singing. Of course baking and photography are a passion too. Never studied singing, but did study ballet and tap for 8 years. I use to teach ballroom dancing at Fred Astaire’s Studios in Los Angeles for about a year and a half. I am a pretty good salsa dancer, and can keep up with people younger than I.” I had no problem believing this statement whatsoever. Eve made her entertainment debut at the adorable age of 6 at none other than the world famous Carnegie Hall in Manhattan, New York City. I enjoy performing most of all and making people smile, sing, cry... I perform at senior assisting living places where the residents really enjoy that I can sing songs from the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, and they can sing along with me.” She went on, “I also I do well with performing for little children and enjoy doing charity events. I think I am more of a performer and personality instead of a great singer... I get by. When I auditioned for Disneyland in the 70’s, the fellow doing the casting, after seeing over 150 girls, said to me, ‘If you can sing half as good as you look, you’ve got the job.’” Eva laughed as she added, “I got the job.” Carol Kamenis: Carol started performing at 4 1/2 years old with her singing and tap dancing. By age 6, Carol was known as “The Little Atom Bombshell” by Hollywood columnists. She began recording songs at the age of 8: “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” and “Can’t Do The Boogie In School” with

Red Callender & Orchestra Her hit recordings were many: “Three Stars” in 1959 with Tommy Dee, a tribute to Buddy Holly, Big Bopper & Richie Valens; “You’ll Never Never Know”/ “Gee Gosh, Gosh Oh Gee” in 1961; and “Shook Out Of Shape” / “Keep Talkin” in 1962. Her television appearances are just as impressive. She appeared on Art Laboe, Art Linkletter, Ina Ray Hutton, Spade Cooley, Bob Hope/Bing Crosby Telethon, Al Jarvis, Doyle O’Dell, Hollywood Road To Fame, Back Stage with N.T.G, Bob Shanon, and Junior Rangers of America (Phoenix, AZ). Her many stage appearances include the Shrine Auditorium (Christmas Benefit With The Star), Masquer’s Clubs, Hollywood USO, Camp Pendelton, Camp Roberts, Corriganville Movie Ranch (every Sunday for 3 years), Veterans Hospital (Sawtell), Children’s Hospital (Los Angeles), Sportsman Lodge (Sherman Oaks), Moose Club, Elks Club, Chase Hotel with Manny Mendoza & Orchestra (Santa Monica), Beverly Hills Hotel with Manny Harmon & Orchestra, Wilshire Ebell Theater and so many more. Carol has also appeared in cinema: -“Love Is Better Than Ever” - (Elizabeth Taylor & Larry Parks) MGM- 1950 -“The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who

Stopped Living and Became Mixed Up Zombies”Morgan-Steckler Productions -1964 Relocating to Palm Springs in late 2006, Carol joined Bella da Ball’s Cabaret Family, performing at The Rainbow, Hotel ZOSO, Shakers, Hunters, DINKS Ultra Lounge, AZUL, Georgie’s ALIBI, Palm Springs PRIDE Big Top Cabaret, and Idyllwild Rustic Theatre New Year’s Eve Extravaganza among others and has donated her talents to numerous benefits and fundraisers including Friends of Palm Springs Animal Shelter, SAVE A PET, Interfaith Spiritual Center, and Desert Aids Project. Allison Lenore Annalora: According to this ravishing singer’s colorful bio, “Torch singers are not created, they’re born with an innate talent, though it may take a lifetime of experience to nurture those raw gifts into a unique and memorable sound.” A current resident of Palm Springs, Allison is a self-proclaimed, “sassy” torch singer. She is a blonde, female crooner, who specializes in the power ballads of the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s, along with show-stopping Broadway tunes.

An attractive, woman with talent to spare, she’s more than ready to don the sequins, take possession of the pink-gelled spotlight center-stage, and fulfill her destiny --not simply knowing the lyrics, but having lived them. Adopted as an infant, a curious Allison located her birth family in 1992 and discovered several relatives who had musical backgrounds, including her great-grandfather who sang professionally at the turn of the previous century. Allison’s birth mother had sung in Cabarets and her biological brother currently sings and plays drums for a cover band in the Seattle area. This new-found knowledge of a musical heritage not only fascinated Allison, but convinced her to pursue her life-long aspiration of becoming a professional singer herself. When a determined Ms. Annalora relocated to Palm Springs, California, in 2004, she went to work on turning a wistful dream into a true career reality. She made this happen first, by obtaining qualified training and second, by performing whenever, wherever she could. Her perseverance has paid off. “I see myself as a story teller,” shared Allison, with a glint in her captivating blue eyes. “I’m relating to the audience a feeling, a memory, a connection between people. Interpretation is the key to understanding what the words mean and enjoying the subtly of the music. I haven’t done my job unless there is palpable emotion from the crowd.” Some of her many venues include the Rainbow Cactus Cabaret, Hotel Zoso Cabaret, Dink’s Restaurant and Cabaret, Cafe Palete, in Palm Springs. She was also a finalist at the McCallum Theater’s Open Call 2010. With all three of these enchanting divas performing together, it is sure to be and amazing night at Georgie’s Alibi Azul Patio Restaurant. The show is free, but reservations are recommended. You can call them at (760) 325-5533. The venue is located in the heart of downtown Palm Springs in the historic 1934 General Telephone Company building: 369 N. Palm Canyon Drive.

Variety Children’s Charity of the Desert Gives You and Our Kids the Best Odds to Win!

I

f you’ve been to the beautiful Mary Pickford Movie Theater in Cathedral City lately, you’ll have seen that brand new Ford C MAX Hybrid from Palm Springs Ford sitting out front just waiting for someone to put the keys in it and drive off. The very decorated vehicle is up for raffle, and with the purchase of just one $10 raffle ticket, you have a 1 in 5000 chance of winning it. That’s better odds than the lottery or casino! Meanwhile, your contributions go to support an organization that is meeting the urgent needs of our desert’s underprivileged children. Their Mission Statement: “Variety the Children’s Charity of the Desert, is dedicated to promoting and protecting the health and well-being of children who are underprivileged and/or have special needs in the Coachella Valley. Through hard work, thoughtful stewardship, and single-minded focus on the needs of the young, Variety strives to make a lasting difference in the lives of children, their families, our community, and the world… one need at a time.” Their website that contains the compelling story of how this national 501c3 organization got its start over 85 years ago: “THE GIVING STARTED IN 1928, WITH ONE BABY On Christmas Eve in 1928, a baby girl was found on a seat at the Sheridan Square Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A note pinned to her dress read: Please take care of my baby. Her name is Catherine. I can no longer take care of her. I have eight others. My husband is out of work. She was born on Thanksgiving Day. I have always heard of the goodness of show business people and pray to God that you will look out for her.” (signed) ‘A Heartbroken Mother’ When all efforts by the police and local newspapers failed to locate her parents, a group of eleven gentlemen affiliated with the

entertainment industry agreed to financially underwrite the child’s support and education. Just one year prior, these men had rented a small club room in the William Penn Hotel and created a social club, aptly named ‘Variety’ given that the members encompassed various branches in show business. The child was then named Catherine Variety Sheridan, her middle name for the club and her last name for the theatre. The Variety club legacy continues now into the 21st century, existing for one reason to help children in need.” Todd Marker (Owner/CEO Marker Broadcasting) shared how he came to be part of the giving. “Variety is the charity that takes care of some of the most underprivileged children in the desert. About 15 years ago the charity came to our country station, KPLM 106, to do some radio spots. Over the years we raised over 1 million dollars for them so I thought I’d take a look and see where the money’s going. I saw the good that they were doing and how, as a group, Variety sees that kids are our future, and they give these kids a chance. There are all kinds of causes we (the radio group) like to help out, but children’s charities are the ones we really have a heart for.” Marker’s actions stand behind those words as he has now been elected President of our local chapter. Chuck Baum, Senior Account Manager at Lamar Advertising and newly appointed Second Vice President of the local charity shared why he finds serving for this organization so rewarding. “The reason why I got involved with Variety in the first place, was due to the fact that they help LOCAL needy kids. Not having kids of my own, I find it very rewarding to help the little ones in need. The Hella-Mighty Firework Freak Show

H

ow do The Hellions and Mighty Jack celebrate the 4th of July? They unite and perform two sidesplitting sets of rock and roll of course! The inaugural “Hella-Mighty Firework Freak Show’ is set to take place at Schmidy’s Tavern on Saturday July 5th. These two preeminent desert bands have been at it for years and have no intention of stopping to smell the cactus. Their respective line-ups have remained intact and their friendship supersedes any possible band bullshit. After you have devoured your share of hot dogs and watched the conventional firework show, head to Schmidy’s for some TNT! The fuse is lit at 9 p.m. with Mighty Jack. For the sake of the one CV Weekly reader who is not familiar with The Hellions, their line-up is: Angel “Shakedown” Lua on guitar and vocals, Jamie “Colonel Lingus” Hargate on guitar, Travis “Rawkhard” Rockwell on bass, Christian “Johnny Diablo” Reyes on vocals and Bob “Smack” Llamas on drums. We are all familiar with The Hellions because they are bombastic and fuckin’ hilarious. They have developed traditions while other bands have difficulty establishing a following. “Basically, we want to be remembered as the band that broke down the performer/audience barrier, by inviting the spectator into our spectacle as rawk ’n’ rollers,” Lua gushes. With a Hellions show comes a helluva party. Lua continues, “It was always about musical performance. We try to engage

10

our fans not only through our musical prowess but also our visual performance, energy, explosiveness, improvisation, and community. Another aspect of our longevity as a band is our respect and admiration for each other as musicians and friends. I guess you can say we are fans of each other.” The Hellions are brothers who happen to be in a rock band. It hasn’t always been easy to maintain but they digress and reestablish themselves. Lua admits to a Hellions funk at one time. “The Turbojugend/Turbonegro connection kind of kick-started us out of a slump we had several years ago. We came together after listening to Turbonegro’s “Apocalypse Dudes” and got a much needed shot of inspiration and wrote some newer and more provocative shit. We felt the desert was in need of a rock ‘n’ roll band that did not take itself too seriously and appreciated the entertainment and spectacle of musical performances - kind of like an assault on all the senses.” I recall meeting them as a band for the first time several years ago at the Indio Performing Arts Center while in their dressing room prior to a performance. They shared with me their rituals and how they choose song lists. Hargate pulled out a hat with little pieces of paper that have song titles written on them. They proceeded to share how the song lists are determined just prior to the show. This haphazard approach to rock is what makes The Hellions stand out

amongst a slew of desert rock bands; it’s organized chaos. Lua continues, “Another thing was this concept we developed known as the “Hellion Haunt”. In the infancy of our band, the “Hellions’ Haunt” was characterized by a more reckless period and abandon of structure or rules in our performances. We kind of likened it to the time everyone (especially musicians) experiences, where the energy and the fire in our youth consumes everything we do.” The adventurous nature of The Hellions has kept them youthful despite the tick of time. They will be embarking on new material that will be recorded and released in the near future. Hargate is enthusiastic about the Schmidy’s show. “I’m stoked for the show on Saturday! It’s one of the only shows for the summer as we are focusing on writing and rehearsing for a new record that we will start recording at the end of August.” I have to say that Mighty Jack is also one of those bands, like The Hellions, who are unparalleled. Made up of four desert rock veterans Marc “Cooska” Gentry on guitar, Charles “The Deliverer” Ellis on guitar and vocals, Aaron C. Ramson “The Hawaiian” on bass and vocals and Jeff “Papa Looch” Bowman on drums, Mighty Jack have lived up to the name by performing their brand of punk/surf/lounge rock with a heavy

hitting wall of sound that leaves you (and me) subconsciously reciting their tunes throughout the day unconsciously. Gentry is the purveyor of that wall of sound. We know Gentry, who has been a mainstay in the desert music scene since the late 80’s. He is once again re-connected with The Pedestrians on a part-time basis. He made sure that it be known that Brandon Ray Henderson remains their main vein on the six string. He is also working on a project entitled “Aphrodisiac Jacket” that salutes and recognizes the music of The Cult. Only Gentry can share his status speaking in the third person using his alias, “Well Cooska always has some irons in the fire. Mighty Jack definitely wants to record again soon. We have some old songs that never made it to our first album plus new material that is begging to be recorded for posterity.” If you have yet to hear the Mighty Jack recording, Russian Roulette, I highly recommend you purchase it on iTunes. It’s 12 songs and 44 minutes of Mighty Jack in a nutshell. I have 14,000 songs in my iTunes account. In looking at my ‘Top 25 Most Played’ list the song “Don’t Wanna Wait” is on that list. Need I say more? Also check them out at facebook.com/Mightyjackband. See you at the Hella-Mighty Firework Freak Show!

Smash 77- “Tales from the Underground” I n case you didn’t know, “Punk’s Not Dead” in the Coachella Valley. It’s not being held hostage in some trailer park near the Salton Sea, nor is it just a musical ghost haunting the used vinyl section down at the Record Alley in the Westfield Mall. In fact it’s quite alive and well on the new release from Smash 77 entitled Tales From The Underground. Local area La Quinta resident Shawn Smash has just released the second full length album from the three piece unit and Punk’s future is so bright you have to wear safety pins, sunglasses, or anything studded and black leather. Corny 1980’s clichés aside, TFTU delivers a brash yet poppy mix of 14 songs that rock harder then most things that rock hard. The opening song, which is the title track of the album, searches the lyrical grit and decay of a life spent on the road touring and hitting the streets. Shawn Smash sings of “burning the candle at both ends” and lays down the punk rock code of arms “having each other’s backs” as the city streets erupt into mayhem and violence. He goes on to sing “emergency/dialing 911/I’m telling tales from the underground” and Smash 77 is just getting started. Shawn Smash’s song structures and guitar wizardry marries what we loved about Social Distortion style chord progressions to what we admired in the more glam, hard rock solo styling’s of CC Deville and Eddie Van Halen. His strength as a lead guitarist is well documented in other bands he’s

performed in (Total Chaos/No Solution) but particularly shines through on TFTU. The musical landscape is less of a hardcore thrash style allowing him to explore new terrain. Smash takes vocal duties on the album lending more credence to the claim of the “total punk rock package.” His voice is at times rough and street ready (Tim Armstrong and Mike Ness) and at other moments, do I dare say, smooth and fluid, almost taking on a pop/rock vocal sensibility with melodies and harmonies that wouldn’t be out of place on a Kiss or Descendants album. Notably sounding like a young Billy Idol with a cover of Generation X’s “Wild Youth.” Accompanied by a versatile and extremely tight rhythm section, that features Brock Anderson on bass and Danny “Boy” Virus on drums Smash 77’s punk foundation is solid and TFTU’s rock is steady. Smash 77 also featured a guest piano/ keyboard appearance by local Coachella Valley music legend Ronnie King, whom according to Smash, “played piano on 3 songs.” From youth anthems that, at their best, rival the Clash and the Ramones (Let’s Change the Radio), to Oi! tinged backing vocals ala Sham 69 (Riot Heart), to infectiously catchy 1980’s stadium rock (20 Stories), Smash 77 risks it all. In the beginning of “Rock ‘N’ Roll Outlaw” Shawn Smash sings, “live free or die is what I say.” He backs it up a few lines later in the first verse with “I’m breaking rules and taking risks/I got six guns loaded pointed at your chest.” Perhaps the new ground TFTU breaks

is finding a sentimentality and nostalgia for everything beautiful about punk rock back in the day and being comfortable enough to express it in a fashion that holds on to the past but looks for a future (I Wanna Feel Like The First Time). I caught up with Shawn Smash upon his return from performing at the Amnesia Rock Fest in Canada with American hardcore punk rock legends Total Chaos. Smash joined Total Chaos, as the lead guitar player, during the height of America’s Green Day/ Offspring mainstream punk explosion and has been with the group ever since. CVW: How long have you been with Total Chaos? Are you touring this summer? SS: I joined in January of 1995, so almost 20 years now. This summer we’re covering Europe and the U.K. We’ll also be hitting the festival circuits. CVW: How long has Smash 77 been in existence?

SS: Smash 77 started in the summer of 2007 with former and current members of the bands Total Chaos and Cheap Sex. CVW: TFTU isn’t the first album release from Smash 77, right? SS: No, the first Smash 77 album titled “Blackout” came out in 2012 and featured a music video for the song “Melrose” that is on the movie soundtrack to “My Trip Back to the Darkside”. It can be viewed on YouTube (http://youtu.be/ZntKYMBk2z4). CVW: Will Smash 77 be playing in the Coachella Valley anytime soon and what was it like working with local musician Ronnie King? SS: We are currently rehearsing and getting our live show ready for late summer/ fall show dates which will hopefully include the Coachella Valley. Ronnie was great to work with. He did touring with the Offspring and Rancid and guest stared on Snoop Dogg and Tupac records. He’s from out here and so is his brother, John Stanley king.” CVW: What do you think of the Coachella Valley area and the music scene? SS: There are some great bands coming out of here like Gutter Candy, and cool venues like the Red Barn, The Hood, and Hard Rock Cafe (among others). Coachella and Stage Coach dominate over the other music festivals and bring in a lot of outside music fans, generating great local business. Things have really picked up since I moved out here in 2005. CVW: Give me a brief description of Smash 77 sound? SS: Musically it’s high energy rock and roll. Lyrically it covers personal experiences, anything from heartbreaks to personal triumphs. The songs aren’t contrived, they come from real experiences. CVW: What are your musical influences as it relates to Smash 77? SS: Stylistically we’re influenced by Social Distortion, The Ramones, early Guns N› Roses, and Paul Westerberg…bands in that vein. CVW Lastly, where can someone get their hands on the new album? SS: For ordering info, please send an email to: shawnsmash1977@hotmail.com

PIXIES

f you came of age in the ‘70s, you might remember a classic deadpan bit from “Saturday Night Live.” In the Spring of 1976, producer Lorne Michaels rather seriously offered the Beatles a certified check for 3,000 if they would get back together and perform on the show. “Divide it any way you want. If you want to give Ringo less, that’s up to you.” Ironically, John Lennon and Paul McCartney were actually together, watching SNL when Michaels made the offer. Of course, it never came to pass. The Beatles never officially reunited. It seemed like an impossible suggestion at the time. When a band broke up, they broke up for good. Not anymore. Ever since the ‘90s, bands break up and reunite, like 10 minutes later! Sometimes, it even feels like a career move. A band is floundering, stage a break up and then wait a year or two and reform. Cynical but lucrative. Hopefully, that isn’t the case with the Pixies. Back in the early ‘80s, Charles Thompson IV (ne’Black Francis) was attending University Of Massachusetts, in Amherst, as was Joey Santiago. They lived next to each other in a dorm suite, almost immediately they began playing guitar together. After he completed a student exchange program in Puerto Rico, Francis dropped out of college. He and Santiago worked in a warehouse and woodshedded. Francis began writing songs on acoustic guitar and

“Indie Cindy” (Pixiesmusic)

composing lyrics on the subway. He placed a classified ad for a bassist, wanting anyone who “liked Husker Du and Peter, Paul & Mary.” After two weeks, Ohio native Kim Deal answered the ad. Suggesting they recruit her friend, David Lovering for drums, the Pixies were born in 1986. They began playing clubs and bars in the Boston area. After recording a 17 track demo at the Fort Apache studio, their music came to the attention of Ivo Watts-Russell, founder of 4AD. 4AD was a British indie label that began in 1979. Their eclectic roster included Birthday Party, Cocteau Twins, Modern English and Throwing Muses. (They continue today with vanguard artists like Future Islands, The National and Tune-Yards). Signing with 4AD in 1987, they immediately released an EP, Come On Pilgrim and followed up with their full-length debut, Surfer Rosa, produced by Steve Albini. Both were quickly embraced by critics in America and Great Britain. They also garnered airplay on college radio and MTV’s weekly alternative Rock program, “120 Minutes.” Their sound was brash and vitriolic. Slashing guitars referenced noise rock, psychedelia and surf rock. Francis’ yowly vocals were offset by Deal’s sweet harmonies. By 1988, the band had jumped to a major label, Elektra, and hooked up with producer Gil Norton. Their sophomore effort, Doolittle, arrived in early 1989. Boasting a clean, almost radio friendly sound, the album produced two super-catchy singles, “Here Comes Your Man”and “Monkey Gone To Heaven.” Despite their newfound success, there was tension in the band. Deal’s compositions were getting the short shrift. Rather than disband, the Pixies took a hiatus. Black Francis booked a solo tour, Santiago and Lovering took vacations and Kim Deal formed her own band, the Breeders, and recorded their debut, Pod. The band reconnected with Gil Norton, and their next two albums, Bossa Nova in 1990 and Trompe le Monde in 1991 continued the Pixies’ streak of excellence. Although

Consider This

they never achieved superstar success, the band was a seminal influence; a touchstone for artists like Kurt Cobain, Bono, PJ Harvey and even David Bowie who said “the Pixies made just about the most compelling music of the ‘80s.” Sadly, the adulation wasn’t enough to keep the band together. They broke up in 1992, just as their most apt pupil, Kurt Cobain, achieved superstardom in Nirvana. He point-blank admitted that “on Smells Like Teen Spirit, I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies.” Black Francis became Frank Black and began a prolific solo career. David Lovering became a magician (!) Joey Santiago and his wife formed a band, the Martinis. Kim Deal re-activated the Breeders and released Last Splash, one of the biggest sellers of 1993. A decade later, the Pixies agreed to reunite. They played select dates in the U.S. as a warm-up for their 2004 appearance at Coachella. The reception was massive, it seemed as though the zeitgeist had finally caught up to the Pixies. They continued to tour for the next nine years. But just as they were preparing to record, Kim Deal quit the band. Kim Shattuck, of the Muffs and Pandoras, replaced Deal for the European tour. Paz Lenchantin of Zwan and A Perfect Circle replaced Shattuck. But when the Pixies retreated to the studio, it was as a three-piece. With Gil Norton handling production chores, the Pixies recorded 12 tracks, splitting them between three EPs, whimsically entitled EP 1, EP 2 and EP 3! Now the tracks have been re-configured into the full-length album, Indie Cindy. The album opens with the skronky jabberwocky of “What Goes Boom.” The guitars pivot between kaleidoscopic and sludgey. Thrumming bass lines connect to a tick-tock beat. The lyrics are a pleasing string of non-sequiters… “I like that slinky little punky little bit funky itty bitty chunky right there.” The Pixies truly pioneered the “loud quiet” dynamic that Nirvana popularized. Three tracks, “Greens And Blues,” “Ring The Bell” and “Snakes” are served up like Punk

Rock comfort food. “Greens And Blues” feature guitar riffs that ricochet between jangly arpeggios and keening scales. The lyrics sketch a portrait of a diffident (possibly alien) suitor…“I’m not together and you know it’s true, my bits all wander in the trees/And if I seem a little strange would you excuse me please?” “Ring The Bell” is shimmery pop perfection. Ringing guitar notes are anchored by propulsive rhythms. Black Francis’ usual peevish vocals have been supplanted by surprisingly honeyed tones. Of course this burst of enthusiasm is cloaked in cryptic language…”I’ve been away for a long time, and though I’ve had some good times I would have paid a crore to see the Garland once more.” Finally, “Snakes” tethers a galloping beat to a series of guitar notes that cluster like Gordian knots. Here Francis is positively gleeful as he predicts impending, (possibly biblical) doom…”snakes are coming to our town/a plague for our mistakes.” Two tracks, “Indie Cindy” and “Magdalena 318” blend the sweet-sour as only the Pixies can. On the former, Francis’ vocals pingpong between a maniacal rant….”I’m the Burgermeister of purgatory/ You put the cock in cocktail”… with a wistful chorus full of courtship ritual….”I’m in love with your daughter, though she has no need.” The latter blends hypnotic guitar riffs with a fluttery-stuttery backbeat. The lyrics offer a calibrated homage to Magdalena who is both the “meanest” and the “leanest.” Other interesting tracks include the slightly soporific “Silver Snail,” the querulous “Bag Boy” which incorporates jagged guitar licks and roiling rhythms. On “Blue Eyed Hexe” fractious power chords collide with fluid bass lines and kinetic percussion. Less successful is the Indie paint-bynumbers feel of “Another Toe In The Ocean” and the weirdly Italianate “Andro Queen” The album closes with “Jaime Bravo”, a possible tribute to Greg Brady’s “Johnny Bravo,” and a veritable potlatch of angular riff-age and soaring harmonies. Despite the fact that the album is missing a key component of the Pixies’ sound, namely Kim Deal, the finished product is fairly cohesive. Ultimately, Indie Cindy is a worthy addition to the Pixies canon. But is that enough?

imitri Halkidis has pulled it off again beautifully, with an upcoming Exhibition honoring Steven Chase at his Gallery 446 in Palm Springs. When Steven Chase, iconic Palm Springs Interior Designer, was honored by Desert AIDS Project at “A Valentine’s Gala” in 1993, along with former first lady Betty Ford and McDonald’s heiress Joan Kroc, the program for the evening noted: “Steve’s intense interest in art has generated a significant collection of contemporary art, displayed in his private residences and Rancho Mirage office. While his collection contains museum quality works, he constantly acknowledges and seeks out work by young and upcoming artists. He is a supporter of art scholarships and major contributions from his collection have been made to the Desert Museum in Palm Springs.” When the award-winning interior designer created his own 7,000-square-foot home in the desert, Chase made sure the living room was large enough to display his 17-footwide painting by Helen Frankenthaler, along with other massive works of modern art. Chase designed interiors and helped choose artwork for homes around the world of celebrity clients like Dyan Cannon, Farrah Fawcett, Gene Hackman, Johnny Mathis, and a variety of others. Right here in the Coachella Valley, clients like Helene Galen not only counted Chase as the talented professional who designed her home’s interiors but also

as a friend. Involved with Desert AIDS Project from its earliest days, Chase was a long-time volunteer, donor, and board member. He knew that one of his clients had already made gifts totaling more than $5 million to support AIDS research and provide care through her Joan B. Kroc Foundation. Working closely with Mrs. Kroc, Chase helped make possible her major gift that created the first medical clinic at Desert AIDS Project. Following his death in 1994, many in the community rallied together the very next year to create the First Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala, to benefit D.A.P. Twenty years later, the event has grown to become one of the highlights of the Palm Springs social season. Honoring major HIV/ AIDS activists from science and medicine, as well as stars of stage and screen, “the Steve Chase” attracts 1500 or more attendees from across the country and has grossed well over $1 million for the last several years. Now, Chase is helping to contribute to D.A.P. once again through the Steve Chase Associates Art Collection. Gil Rose, a longtime member of D.A.P.’s Partners for Life annual giving program, along with Stan Russell. Rose, who is also D.A.P.’s Volunteer Curator of Art & Collectibles, said “This is everyone’s opportunity to purchase artwork from the D.A.P. Archival Collection, including the Chase Collection and works from a variety of other artists.” DIMITRI HALKIDIS has made his Gallery available for this Exhibition - “The Heart of Giving” -- Gallery 446, 446 S. W

e humans cheerfully celebrate our nation’s Independence Day this week with fun, food, and fireworks. As we barbeque in the backyard with friends and family, it might be tempting to include our special four-legged family members. However, the 4th of July is the worst day of the year for our canine friends. The loud noise from fireworks is extremely painful to dogs’ ears. The bangs, explosions, bright lights, and sirens create fear and confusion for our pups and for most cats. On July 5th every year, some of our highways look like war zones with dead and injured animals who escaped from homes in their fright. Many more end up as strays in our public shelters. Dogs in their frenzy from fireworks will jump tall fences that ordinarily contain them. Sadly, many shelters euthanize more animals this week to create room for the anticipated holiday influx. Owner turn-ins are the first to be euthanized as they know no one is coming for them.

Adorable Pup

Almost 8 million cats and dogs go missing every year in this country. Over 35% of those animals will end up euthanized at a public shelter. Shelter workers are bracing for a large influx over the 3-day holiday weekend. WALK YOUR DOGS BEFORE THE FIREWORKS BEGIN, AND KEEP ALL PETS SECURELY INSIDE THE HOUSE UNTIL THE NIGHT AND FIREWORKS ARE COMPLETELY OVER. Because the holiday falls on a Friday this year, there may be more revelers setting off fireworks on Saturday and Sunday, so continue to exercise care. When your pets are safely inside, you can play soft music to sooth them from the extreme sounds. Turn on the television or a fan which also distracts from the loud noise. Keep windows and curtains closed to further reduce noise and keep out the bright firework flashes. Be careful when the front door opens when visitors come calling because your dog is already under stress and more likely to dart out through an open door. You may want to purchase calming

supplements from a pet specialty shop. YOUR PET SHOULD WEAR AN ID TAG ON HIS COLLAR AT ALL TIMES WITH YOUR CELL PHONE ENGRAVED. These inexpensive tags can be purchased at PetCo and PetSmart. Your pet should be microchipped and contact information kept current. These are the most important things you can do to ensure the safe return of a missing pet. Take a current close up photo of your pet. I was recently contacted by a distraught owner of a missing pet only to discover they had no photo and therefore no way of posting the animal online or making flyers. If your pup is outside as you prepare for the festivities, keep these curious creatures away from charcoal, fireworks, sparklers,

and glow sticks. Don’t let guests give them “people food” treats. Extreme changes in diet can upset their digestive systems. Foods such as onions, chocolate, avocado, grapes, raisins, and yeast dough can be toxic. Never leave unattended alcoholic drinks near your pets as they have the potential to poison them. Similar precautions need to be taken by cat owners. Some cats are oblivious to fireworks, while others become very agitated. Keep all windows and blinds shut. Offer needed reassurance. Allow them to hide under the bed or burrow under a blanket until they feel it’s safe to come out. Looking for a missing pet? Cool Hot Summer Wine Haunts

A

round this hot time of year, I usually get a bunch of comments about where & when, how & why I should be writing or at least commenting on some of the wonderful and refreshing wine venues happening around town. So here you go . . . A shout-out to my cocktilian friends, Alfredo and Hector, over at the Steakhouse Restaurant & Bar in the Aguas Caliente Resort & Spa. These guys are real pros

when it comes to mixology. They can make the driest and tastiest Martinis in town at the $6 Happy Hour. They also pour a nice big glass of house red or white that you can enjoy at the bar or to go while you play in the casino. A lot of characters go in and out of this bar but these bartenders remain the consummate gentlemen and are a delight to watch work. Enjoying appetizers or even a great dinner while sitting at the bar is an added treat. A couple of my favorite Italian haunts are Pinzimini located in the Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort and Michael’s Pizzeria over at The River Shopping Mall. Although the Italian fare at Pinzimini is generally Tuscan in theme, when I walk in the place, it’s like strolling into a chic Milano ristorante. The venue is elegant but you quickly notice things are casual and you’re ready to enjoy la bella vita di far niente. Celebrate Wine Down Wednesdays at the bar or at the table, where over 40 wines by the glass are half-off wine list price. This means Veuve Cliquot Champagne at only $10 a flute; or Cakebread Napa Chardonnay at $11, Chiarello Piemontese Gavi $6, and Allegrini Palazzo della Torre, Veneto at $6 a glass. BeviamoTutti!!

By the way—on alternating Wednesdays in July at 6pm, join Chef Shawn Aoki in an interactive pizza-making class to help you perfect the art of pizza and utilizing Pinzimini’s hot brick oven; and, include Craft Beer pairing from CV Brewery. On other Wednesdays, look for pasta making and wine pairings. What a fun deal at only $25 for the night’s event. Andiamo Tutti! And valet service is always free for diners. Reservations: 760-770-2150 When Michael’s Pizzeria opened up a couple of years ago, I think my family were the first patrons in and we christened the large round table in the corner by drinking bottles of Prosecco. As we expected (they already had a place in Naples) the food was delicious and impressive. Zagat says this is “one of the top pizza joints in the US.” They’ve been advertising here in the CV Weekly; check out their coupon and munch away! Mangiamo Tutti! We spoke to Manager Mateo who said they’ve got 2 for 1 Tuesdays where all glasses of wine (5 or 8oz.) are: Buy one get another for just 25 cents! (includes beer too). So I’ll be getting two 8oz glasses of my favorite Barbera D’Alba for only $11.25! 760.341.4222 Roy’s has expanded their “Aloha Hour”, 4:30-7pm every day with $6 wine selections that include, Minetto Prosecco, Joel Gott Sauvignon Blanc, Greystone Cellars Merlot & Diseno Malbec just to name a few. By the way, they’re also serving $3 Kona Brewery Craft Beer along with tasty $6 appetizers. (760) 340-9044 SPECIAL ALERT!! AJ’s on the Green & SPLASH! Bar located in the Date Palm Country Club in Cathedral City/Rancho Mirage, was affected by a fire in the adjacent Clubhouse. We hope Art & John get the gas back on so we can enjoy their delicious and very reasonably priced cuisine. Hopefully they’re back open for the July 4th Weekend. Would our wine community please get over there and support the staff & the business. C’mon—it’s what we do. Thanks. SPLASH! Bar really has it going on with their eclectic nightly music scene, and, the Happy Hour $4 glass of wines which include an enchanting Granacha from Spain and a real charming Chardonnay from France.

And did you know their Happy Hour in the summer is all day long! 760.202.1111 Of course no wine haunt list is complete unless the ubiquitous Fique Mediterranean is on it. Everybody in town writes about how great the cuisine is. I know I’ve written about it several times in the last couple of days. But Jeez! Enough already about how Chef de Mélogue is the best chef in the inner solar system and that restaurateur Lee Morcus is the King of the World. And we know already that they only serve the finest foods at their peak of freshness and their menus constantly evolve with the

seasons as they source organic, sustainable, wild, hormone-free and antibiotic-free ingredients—enough! But is anyone going to write and talk about Fique’s full-time sommelier, Joe Mascari? He is one of the most personable and friendly wine guys around—if you have a question or wish a recommendation, please make a point of speaking with him. I really like his wine program right now: On Tuesdays it’s Half Off Bottled Wines which is a great deal as their wine list is stellar! This means I get a bottle of Cleto Chiarli Lambrusco for $14!! A 2010 Damilano Roero Arneis, a captivating white, for $21! And the 2010 Vietti Perbacco, Nebbiolo for only $30! On Wednesdays, there is no Corkage Fee in the dining room. Yes Martha, that means we can bring in our own fabulous bottle of wine we’ve been saving. Joe the Somm will provide flawless wine service most graciously. 760.698.9040 Cheers! Rick is your somm-about-town and the wine steward at Pavilions in Rancho Mirage, conducting & entertaining at wine events & tastings. Contact winespectrum@aol.com

Smoke tree supper club I

enjoy dining out in great local restaurants and I also enjoy cooking at home. I don’t intend to brag but I can hold my own in the kitchen, just ask my kids. All kidding aside, there is a new restaurant in Palm Springs that allows the guest to be both chef and customer by letting guests cook their own meal. Well, sort of. Smoke Tree Supper Club is a new dining venue where guests are seated at community tables that surround a large grilling station. While the restaurant’s chef will prepare your salads, appetizers and side dishes, the guest is encouraged to grill his or her own protein. Whether you want steak, chicken, pork or seafood, grab some tongs and have some fun!

We arrived early and began with cocktails on their covered patio. Seating is outside with the exception of a private dining area and a few high top tables near the bar. Like most restaurants, there are daily specials and we began with one suggested by our server. A Pork Belly appetizer arrived with a sweet and tangy mustard sauce. Three thick pieces of pork belly were placed on crisp bread and drizzled with the grain mustard sauce. It was truly incredible. We also shared a wedge salad with candied pecans, bacon and crumbled bleu cheese. Both were impressive and well portioned. Now comes the fun part. Our server presented to us our selected entrees, ready to be grilled: a fresh salmon fillet and a beautifully marbled Rib-eye Steak. We had many questions but our server was quick to answer them all with a smile. A colorful chalk board is on display with each protein selection and its appropriate cooking time, based on one’s preference. We seasoned our salmon and steak before placing it on the grill. I do love to hear that sizzle! This was an ideal time to enjoy another cocktail. The Chef was there to guide us and suggest

when to rotate and when to flip, though it was completely up to us. The result was a perfect medium rare Rib-eye and a melt-inyour-mouth tender fillet of salmon. We also enjoyed a green peppercorn cream sauce with the steak and an herb butter for the fish. Not to pat ourselves on the back, but our meal was perfection! There are many side dishes to accompany your meal and all are intended for sharing. We paired our entrees with their Asiago Scalloped Potatoes and we definitely made the right choice! The evening was complete with a very creamy slice of cheesecake with a raspberry coulis and bread pudding to die for! The desserts were rich with layers of flavor. This was an experience that will not soon be forgotten. I highly recommend this restaurant to those who are willing to roll up their sleeves and make some new friends. Smoke Tree Supper Club is located in the Smoke Tree shopping center at Palm Canyon and Sunrise Way. BEST MOVIE NEVER MADE ?

Screeners No.119

NOW SHOWING ON THE BIG SCREEN: SNOWPIERCER

JODOROWSKY’S DUNE

A

lejandro Jodorowsky is a charismatic 85-year-old ChileanFrench idiosyncratic filmmaker. He’s also a writer, graphic novelist, actor, playwright, musician, all around madman and part time guru. Jodo, as he is known by his many friends and fans, is first and foremost a passionate artist. He has the soul of a creator who operates with a ferocious vision that remains singular, searing and enigmatic.

20

He’s best-known for writing and directing the underground cult hits EL TOPO and THE HOLY MOUNTAIN that are still popular at special midnight showings. In 1975, Jodo began working on his most ambitious project yet: an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s futuristic Messianic space opera best-seller “Dune” starring his own 12-yearold son Brontis alongside Orson Welles, Mick Jagger, David Carradine and Salvador Dali featuring music by Pink Floyd. The production art was by some of the best, most provocative talents of the time, including Chris Foss, Dan O’Bannon H.R. Giger and Jean “Moebius” Giraud. With key above and below the line talent in place, Jodo was poised to change cinema forever. In fact, even though the film was never realized as envisioned by Jodo, it did impact numerous films, including STAR WARS, RAIDERS OF

THE LOST ARK, ALIEN and even the more recent PROMETHEUS. (Unfortunately, David Lynch’s DUNE, a big incoherent flop widely derided was not a result of Jodo’s lavish and passionate dedication and design.) Filmed over three years, director Frank Pavich’s fabulous documentary on Jodo’s ill-fated project is the result of unique and unprecedented access to production material including an extraordinary hard-bound book -- as thick as two big city phone books -- that contained the screenplay, art and meticulous story boards that was used as a “calling card” to pitch the movie to main stream studios. Fascinating interviews including H.R. Giger (artist, ALIEN), Gary Kurtz (producer, STAR WARS) and Nicolas Winding Refn (director, DRIVE) give an unexpected heft and credibility to the material. JODOROWSKY’S DUNE was an official selection at the 2013 Cannes, Telluride, Toronto and AFI film festivals. I was blown away by this incredible documentary that is as wonderfully entertaining as it is inspiring. It is not only about a failed movie project; it is about what it means to be an unfiltered, fully committed artist. It is about a single-minded, full-blown passion so intense that it consumes fellow artists, musicians and performers. It is also about how so-called failure has amazing rewards. Jodorowsky is mesmerizing as he recalls his creative venture that does not exist except in the minds of those who created it. It is not Herbert’s “Dune,” but a morphed vision that was only triggered by Herbert and then given a new incarnation by an obsessive, Chilean surrealist. It’s a “What if” story written without restraint. Jodo’s stated goal was “to mutate young minds “ and change the world. His move was about the redemption of a planet. It’s not clear why the studios did not want to work with Jodo; the impression I got is that they were afraid of him and his disregard of the film’s cost and length. Jodo has disdain for money to be factor in the creation of true art. I can’t recommend the movie highly enough. Sony Classics. Blu-ray.

Adapted from the French graphic novel “Le Transperceneige” and directed by Bong Joon-ho (THE HOST). This is his first English language film and it loses nothing in the translation. The sci-fi epic is about the only survivors of a disastrously failed attempt to modify global warming that destroyed most of life on earth and brought on a new ice age. They are riding a speeding train – the Snowpiercer – around the world via a perpetual motion engine through a frozen world while struggling to adapt to the only environment that is livable. Soon, mysterious messages incite the passengers to mutiny as the train races toward what seems certain disaster. A great international cast that includes Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Bremner, Kang-ho Song, Alison Pill, John Hurt and Ed Harris

plays the compelling characters. This is a weird, dystopian, sometimes witty, violent, audaciously ambitious action thriller that is a welcome relief from mindless CGI saturated, mind numbing summer films. Some critics are already calling this a masterpiece with something on its mind. I was dazzled by the startling visuals and stimulated by the ideas. The ending is stunning and emotional. Now showing Cinema’s Palm d’Or. Comments? robinesimmons@aol.com

“YA” Meets the Art World

O

n the bestseller list since its debut last October, Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch, (Little, Brown, 775 pages) continues to be a run-away success. Is everyone reading this book because everyone else is reading this book? At $30, this lengthy tome may be good vacation reading, but is it great literature? The story is narrated by Theo Decker. He is a 27 year old and begins by remembering his beautiful mother. At 13, he is in trouble at school. He and friend were suspended and the principal has called a meeting with the parents. The friend may have been the instigator, but Theo certainly was a willingly participant. On their way to the school for the meeting, Theo’s mother wants to stop by New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art to see an exhibit. Trying to relax and hoping his mom will forget about the appointment with the principal, he gets lost in the art and follows a pretty girl about his age and her guardian. Suddenly, there is a terrible explosion and when Theo wakes, the building around him is rubble and there is horrible human carnage. His mother and the girl are nowhere in sight, but the guardian – or what’s left of him – gives Theo a ring, an address and tells him to get the painting. With a terrible

The Goldfinch By Donna Tartt fiction concussion Theo is able to remember this information and grab the painting before finding his way out of the museum. Making his way home, he is later told his mother was killed in the terrorist attack. Theo’s father had abandoned him and his mother, so the authorities find him temporary guardianship with the Barbours, a family of a childhood friend. They are an uber wealthy clan. Although he is an outsider, Theo hopes he can stay with them since no other suitable guardian can be found. In the mean time, Theo seeks out the address told to him during the crisis to return the ring to the family of the dying guardian. But not the painting. Here he finds the man’s partner, Hobie, an antique furniture repair guy and the girl he saw at the museum,

Pippa, who is bed ridden from blast injuries. The three begin a friendly and lasting relationship. Just as Theo begins to feel a part of the Barbour family, his father and trashy girlfriend surface and take him back to their seedy world in Las Vegas. Theo only takes his warm weather clothing and the goldfinch painting. Neglected and mostly alone, he eventually makes friends with Boris, a Ukrainian-Polish-Russian boy. The two find they have much in common – dead mothers and cruel fathers. The two bond over drug abuse and shoplifting. When Theo’s father suddenly dies, he leaves Las Vegas and goes back to New York to be with Hobie and Pippa, who become his new family. With a big jump in time, Theo is now a partner in the furniture business and has made some shady deals pawning off fake furniture as authentic antiques. His impropriety discovered, Theo wants to make it right by returning the painting, hoping it will amend all his transgressions, only to discover Boris stole it years ago. What? With an impending nuptial to the Barbour daughter and pressure building about his illegal furniture transactions, Boris tries to help him retrieve the painting he long ago pawned in a drug deal. During his engagement party, Theo and Boris leave for Amsterdam to get the painting back. Unfortunately, the deal goes bad and Theo kills two men. Poor Theo! Still the painting gets away. But, just as Theo considers taking his life, Boris comes through with a cash reward for turning in the painting to European authorities. They’re awarded stacks of American money -- not Euros. Will Theo call off his engagement with the superficial Barbour girl who was once his mean pseudo sister? Or will he marry his true love, the deeply injured Pippa? Will bad boy Boris live to see another day? Will Hobie forgive poor Theo? I’ll let you decide if it’s worth finding out – assuming you care at all about these characters. The first two thirds of The Goldfinch is definitely a YA (young adult) novel – or, as the

highbrow literary community (and Germans) say, Bildungsroman. No matter what you call it, The Goldfinch is a coming of age story about a boy who is a victim of terrorism and realizes life is worth living no matter how bad you are as a person. Theo is not a likeable character. He is in trouble when we meet him and he is still in trouble when it’s over. Hobie is the only character with redeeming qualities, yet he is very much a cliché. Even at the ripe old age of 27, Theo remains an unreliable narrator. The reader knows his memory is faulty and lacks credibility. He is a drug addict, a thief and a murderer. However, Theo is a bit sympathetic. Sure we feel bad for the young lad after losing his mum and da. But the little street urchin rescues a dog and smuggles him across the country and he loved his mother. So, how bad can he really be? The Goldfinch is set in today’s world, but in some alternative universe. If you figure out the math there are contradictions. Like when Theo is 13, there were no cell phones, texting or IPods and terrorism in the US was homegrown. So what, if anything, makes this book compelling? It is the art itself: the 1654 painting of “The Goldfinch” by Carel Fabritius. When Tartt actually writes about the painting, the story becomes real, interesting and meaningful. In beautiful ways, the painting is used to describe Theo’s mother and the ever-changing continuity of life. However, it is often completely forgotten for hundreds of pages and fails to work as an underlying thematic device or conceit. Tartt’s Goldfinch has been compared to Charles Dickens’ novels and it won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. But, does that make it great literature? No.

Banks Posting Record Profits

S

ix years ago, the economies of the world and particularly the United States faced the real risk of a depression that could have been worse than the Great Depression of 1929. While the subsequent recovery has stripped our economy of large swathes of middle class jobs, the economy appears to have stabilized. This is partially proven by the financial condition of banks worldwide. Last year, banks worldwide had $920 billion in pre-tax profits, the highest levels in history. While banks located in the Eurozone had onethird of all assets, they underperformed with only 4% of global profits. The most profitable region of the world was China with Chinese banks holding 25% of all assets and one-third of all profits. While results in China can be discounted somewhat due to less than stellar accounting practices, its rise as a banking superpower is clear and growing. Anecdotally, you will find Chinese banks lending aggressively here in California on construction projects where Chinese products are purchased and used. Looking at the United States, we had approximately 16% of all assets and 20% of profits. Wells Fargo Bank was the most valuable and profitable bank in the United States with a $275 billion market value

and $32 billion of profits. Wells Fargo represented 17% of all profits by all banks in the United States. While African continent banks remain small in asset size, they are the most profitable in the world. The higher yield in Africa is due to a generally higher risk profile for loans in that area and a limitation on the number of banks and investors willing to invest in this region. Are you curious where the weakest bank system in the world resides? Slovenia. While Slovenian government debt remains investment grade by S&P, their banks are at real risk of collapse. Ireland and Cyprus are emerging from financial crises of their own and not as yet out of the woods. Other trouble spots include Portugal, Greece and Italy. Are you curious about the financial health of banks with branches here in the Coachella Valley? One way to assess this is by looking at a forced ranking of all banks in the United States that is done by Bankrate. Bankrate analyzes banks in a number of categories and then categorized each into one of five groups. Banks with 5 stars are the strongest banks in the United States while those with 1 star are the weakest. The vast majority of

DUI OVER JULY 4th WEEKEND?

I

f you were unlucky and got arrested for a DUI over the July 4th weekend then remember you do not just have to appear in court on the date on the yellow citation you were given when arrested. You also have to deal with the Department of Motor Vehicles. An arrest for a DUI kicks in two separate proceedings…….the Court and a DMV hearing. A DMV administrative per se hearing presumes a driver is per se under the influence if the DUI CHEMICAL RESULTS (PAS aka Preliminary Alcohol Screening or Blood test), show the driver to be .08 or higher. If you are stopped for a possible DUI, in order to save your California Driver’s License or driving privileges, you must request a DMV hearing within TEN (10) DAYS. You should also REQUEST A DMV IDENTIFICATION CARD at the same time as you will need some form of proof with a picture during this process! The 10 day time limit begins running from the issuance/arrest date on the Pink Order of Suspension/Temporary Driver’s License known as the Administrative Per Se form. This is true whether you have a California Driver’s License or an out of state driver’s license. The Administrative Per Se/Order of Suspension/ Temporary Driver’s License Endorsement is the 8 x 10 PINK DMV form PS360 (sometimes

white) that the officer gave you when he/she took your license. It gives you the right to drive for 30 days before your right to drive in California is suspended for 4-5 months. This Pink Temporary Driver’s License Endorsement is good for only 30 days from the issue date. If the DMV hearing is requested within 10 days, your driving privileges can be extended by having your attorney request a STAY, which freezes the suspension. The suspension is thus delayed until the outcome of your DMV hearing in about 60 days. After requesting a stay, you receive a white piece of paper which is a Temporary Driver’s License via mail...and it will be sent to the address on your license. It is only valid for the time listed on the paper. Most arrestees do not realize that a DUI creates 2 SEPARATE PROCEEDINGS that

Worth noting, only twelve banks have failed this year with the largest California bank to fail being the Coachella Valley’s Palm Desert National Bank in 2012. all banks receives 3 and 4 star ratings and considered “Safe & Sound” by Bankrate. Looking at the composite ranking of all banks with branches in the Coachella Valley, we have only one 5 star bank and one 1 star bank: Opus Bank at 5 stars and El Paseo Bank at 1 star. All other banks have 3 or 4 star rankings based on year-end results. For reference, the most valuable and profitable bank in the United States, Wells Fargo Bank, has 4 stars. Given that Wells has $1.37 trillion in assets versus Opus Bank with $3.7 billion in assets, it is an academic exercise to rank Opus above Wells. If you are looking for good CD rates, remember that the FDIC insures all deposits up to $250,000 per depositor. As such, it is unlikely that a typical depositor is at risk of losing their money. With rates so low at present, free services and other perks are typically worth more valuable than an extra 0.10%.

both must be addressed and not confused. One is the Court and the other is the DMV administrative per se hearing. The outcome of one does not necessarily affect the other. When DMV suspends your license, it is for a four month period. If you ask for a restricted license, the suspension is for 5 months. Sometimes, we have clients who enter a plea in Court to something BEFORE the DMV hearing. Even though the court does not suspend your license as part of the plea, the court will notify DMV that the driver pled to a DUI or reckless etc., and that the driver is sentenced to attend a drinking driving program. That notification will trigger a letter from DMV in Sacramento called an Order of Suspension. The Order of Suspension is for 6 months. If the court orders you into a Drinking driving program, you will have to show them your California DMV Identification Card. Do not rely on a telephone call to DMV alone… let your lawyer make the request. It is well-known that when the DMV employee tells you, “You’ll be contacted later”, that something will go wrong. All drivers with a DUI should go to DMV a week or two after the arrest to request a printout of their DMV driving record. You will need to show this to the Riverside County Drinking Driving Program if you are ordered to attend a DUI class. DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE, CALL A TAXI… IT IS A LOT CHEAPER THAN HIRING ME!

It’s Warm, it’s Dry, it’s the 4th of July!

T

he words alone are making fire officials cringe says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. It will be a long three day 4th of July weekend. As drought conditions worsen and the fire danger escalates many cities are considering, or are moving forward with, suspending the allowance of Safe and Sane Fireworks sales and discharge. Yet many cities still allow fireworks, and have even begun setting up sales stands early to promote them. Fire officials recommend everyone to attend public fireworks shows, and leave the lighting to the professionals. “The problem is many cities that ban fireworks are already seeing an influx of illegal fireworks being set off,” says Chief DiGiovanna. Check with your local fire department to see if fireworks are allowed in your community. If they are permitted, always read and follow directions. Use them outdoors only. Do not use near grass or other flammable materials. Keep

Would you lend $5.00 to someone if you thought it could change their life? Well, you can now do that.

K

iva Zip is a micro-lending effort that helps alleviate poverty. With as little as $5.00, you can be part of Kiva Zip and help upstart entrepreneurs at changing their life’s trajectory. ShareKitchen is proud to announce its association with Kiva Zip as a trustee to this worthy group. Being a trustee means that we can sponsor upstart entrepreneurs at raising money. ShareKitchen has three roles as a trustee. First, we identify potential borrowers. Second, we vet the character and creditworthiness of the borrower. Given that our team has nearly thirty years of lending experience, we are pretty good at that. Third, we provide ongoing support to the borrowers to help insure that they have every opportunity for success. How much do ShareKitchen and Kiva Zip charge the borrower or lender? Nothing, nada, zero, ZIP! Lenders earn the same amount as us. This is not about making a monetary return on your money - it is about investing in people and changing lives! Once a potential borrower is identified, a fundraising period is set and posted on Kiva Zip. Potential lenders review all of the

information on that potential borrower and decide if they want to sponsor that business. If insufficient loans are committed during the fundraising period, the loan does not fund and all monies committed by lenders are returned. If enough money is raised, Kiva Zip sends the money to the entrepreneur by PayPal. While the loan is outstanding, the borrower keeps you informed as to their progress. You can communicate with them directly as well - for as little as $5.00! The repayment rate on Kiva loans is 90% meaning that nine out of ten dollars lent are repaid. Potential borrowers and lenders can learn more by going to www.kiva.org or contacting us at share@ShareKitchen.org.

Economic Development in the High Desert

D

esert Hot Springs is the first part of the high desert. Looking at a map, you’ll see that it stretches from Sky Valley to SkyBorne. Just to the north towns like Yucca Valley, Moreno Valley, Thousand Palms and even Joshua Tree come into play. It’s a vast area that is largely underdeveloped for now. Many unsuccessful attempts have been made to bring major retailers to DHS. Right now, WalMart is considering a store just off Palm Drive on 18 acres the corporation purchased there some time ago. This is a great idea at exactly this time. Because California’s minimum wage is already set to increase to $12 dollars soon and automatically without any addition input from the corporation, there is no need to argue about lower wages ascribed to WalMart as an employer. Other shops in this category like WinCo have been invited to consider DHS, but have so far politely declined to build in this market. Again, those who would find a Trader Joe’s or a WinCo or other retailer more desirable would first have to consider what it would take to entice those businesses to consider risking their capital in investing in DHS as a profit center. The ideal and scholastic arguments one hears about WalMart all evaporate when one considers a DHS discussion because this area has no other retailer of that magnitude present. We can’t expect a Lowes or Kohl’s or other large retailer to come to DHS until we have established something beyond an empty Kmart parking lot. Some have mentioned fear of “traffic.” This is laughable, because we need to

INCREASE traffic to DHS. It is precisely the dilution of the sales and the sales taxes to neighboring cities that is robbing our city coffers of well-deserved revenue and forcing our poorer residents to buy more gas than they would need to when they purchase elsewhere. All that money could stay in DHS. All those jobs too, and all the associated development. Revenue from Medical Marijuana Dispensaries urgently needs approval by the city council too. Those monies are currently pouring into PS coffers for each week that DHS delays action. WalMart has undertaken their own demographic and marketing study and determined that they are in fact ready to move forward with this investment into our community which will benefit DHS enormously, especially in the long run. The ability to undertake this level of shopping without leaving this part of the high desert will secure DHS as a destination city, and will again only serve to strengthen our economic development. The window of opportunity is short because we need to move forward exactly now, just before minimum wage laws discourage the larger developers. This isn’t a college class in economics. This is a real city with real people….who are largely unemployed and poorer than our other city neighbors. A WalMart would go a long way to finally changing that. Let’s all stand together and understand the enormous benefit of saying YES to WalMart, and DHS the destination city – The Spa City. Questions and Comments to: JohnPaulValdez@gmail.com

Every Bit Counts

W

hether it’s the extra inches on Richard Sherman’s outstretched hands to knock down a Colin Kaepernick pass, a hockey puck stopped short of the goal line by a mound of soft snow or the tying goal scored on the final play of World Cup action, every instance of effort and luck collude in a collision of circumstance for special moments in the world of sports. And life is no different. That’s why sports and athletes make such great partners in raising funds, they understand that the smallest effort can make the largest impact and they’re willing to prove that. You’ve likely heard about Desi Cechin and even more likely have seen her and her plight written about, talked about and discussed, but what you may not know is how YOU can help. If you don’t know who she is, she’s a local 5-year-old facing round after grueling round of chemotherapy to fend off Stage IV High Risk Neuroblastoma. You wouldn’t know it to look at her smile, but her thinning hair and little body is a give away that she’s in a fight for her life. The treatment insurance pays for gives her a 30% chance at survival and a hellish existence while she fights. The treatment that insurance doesn’t cover combats her specific cancer with specific science, gives her an 80% chance and is less injurious to her and her family. But it costs some $250,000 and with travel expenses, the family needs to raise about $300,000. By August. Sound daunting? Not to the 5-year-old, whose smile gives strangers a joyful reminder of why life is precious. And that number is not daunting to anyone who understands the extraordinary efforts of ordinary people is enough to change the course of history. My listener, Corey Fitzpatrick got it started for me, and someone got him involved. But he called me out to donate $100 or get a bucket of iced dumped on my head. Well, I did both. Donated AND got a bucket of ice dumped on my head. I made a video and called out my friends and influential people in the Coachella Valley and world of sports to do the same. It took me about 15 minutes to make the video, but the reverberations are still being felt and there are still ice buckets being dumped on someone’s head from Washington DC to Los Angeles, Indianapolis to Miami in the name of raising money for this little girl’s life. The San Francisco 49ers made a donation, sent autographed footballs and gear, the local media including Bianca Rae of KPSP, marketing guru Jaci Fitzsimonds, the Palm Springs Power and Palm Springs Nissan GM Abe Razick, just to name a few of the first to jump on board, all made their own videos in support of Desi and her fight. And here’s the best part: YOU CAN TOO!

Here’s how: Step 1: Make a list of 10-15 people who can donate $5-eleventy billion dollars and write them down. Step 2: Grab 2 buddies. One to record you and one to dump a bucket of water on your head. (BONUS: With triple digit heat, this is the best way to be charitable AND cool you down.) Step 3: Record you calling out your friends to donate $100 bucks (or $3… ANYTHING helps!) Then have your previously mentioned buddy dump the cold water on your head in a dramatic fashion. (You wearing outrageous clothing, a funny hat or just doing the “That Is Ridiculously Cold Water” dance all adds to the video being watchable by the masses.) Step 4: Make a donation to Desi. ANYTHING HELPS! Maybe add $1 or $1000, but just do something to help. Step 5: Pray for the girl. 5 easy steps to learning the life-long lesson that when everyone works together, even in seemingly small ways, great things happen. Fact is, had Malcolm Smith, not been there to catch the Richard Sherman tipped pass, the Niners would have had another shot at the end zone and who knows how that game would have ended. But Smith was there, cradled the ball and the game ended. Let’s hope our community can be there to cradle little Desi and her family and watch her battle with this terrible disease end in victory as well. To make donations go to www.youcaring. com/believingforDesi If you make a video, feel free to tag me on Facebook, Julie.Buehler, I’ll share it a plenty! Julie Buehler hosts the Coachella Valley’s most popular sports talk radio show, “Buehler’s Day Off” every day from 3-6 on 1010 KXPS, the valley’s all sports station. She can also be seen every morning between 6-7am on KMIR sharing the coolest stories in sports. She’s an avid gym rat, slightly sarcastic and more likely to recite Steve Young’s career passing stats than American Idol winners. Tune in M-F 3-6 pst at www.team1010.com or watch “Buehler’s Day Off” on Ustream and KMIR.com for her sports reports.

The Devil’s in the details Why Jason Kidd is NOT deserving of Bucks job

California Woman 411 with your host Dee Jae Cox

J

ason Kidd’s desertion of the Nets to Milwaukee came suddenly although not quite unexpectedly, given his history of burning bridges. Kidd’s tenure in Brooklyn apparently will be short, as he is thought to have had a Bucks job in hand when he went to the Nets’ executives — above general manager Billy King’s head — and asked for control of basketball operations, according to a person familiar with the situation. The person requested anonymity because there is no resolution yet as the Nets try to get compensation from the Bucks, and the Nets are set on a first-round pick. Kidd’s power play backfired. He certainly had Russians in his corner. That’s in part how he got the coaching job with Brooklyn. Kidd’s agent, Jeff Schwartz, sold the idea of his playerto-coach transition to Dmitry Razumov, who is not listed in the Nets’ media guide but is a trusted adviser to owner Mikhail Prokhorov. King was against hiring Kidd, telling Sports Illustrated before the season that his initial reaction was, “Absolutely not.” But Razumov had interest, and Kidd won King over in the interview. The relationship wasn’t smooth at first, especially when the Nets dropped to 10-21 after a New Year’s Eve loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Growing pains for Kidd as a coach were expected, but King also expected more after assembling the high-priced roster. Both as a player and a coach, Kidd has been known to turn on other coaches, many of whom lost their jobs shortly after. Here’s a list of Kidd’s “victims”: Lou Campanelli, University of California After seven years guiding the Golden Bears, Campanelli couldn’t last a season coaching an unhappy freshman named Jason Kidd. Dick Motta, Dallas Mavericks Byron Scott’s firing by the Nets is blamed on Jason Kidd. Kidd was drafted by Motta, and then went back on his word to attend minicamp. “I’m very upset,” Motta said at the time. He was fired after one season. Jim Cleamons, Dallas Mavericks Kidd was already reportedly beefing with teammate Jim Jackson when he decided to freeze out Jim Cleamons as well. Kidd forced a trade, the Mavericks were terrible, and Cleamons was fired a year later. Byron Scott, New Jersey Nets After two straight trips to the NBA Finals, Kidd ran Scott out of town with a locker-room tirade and a reported demand to GM Rod Thorn. That demand was obliged for Kidd, unlike the one he recently made to run the team’s basketball operations. After pressuring Nets management to hire Lawrence Frank as his assistant coach, Jason Kidd changed his mind and re-assigned his

26

right-hand man last season. Avery Johnson, Dallas Mavericks Johnson was fired less than three months after the Mavs traded for Kidd. But the point guard had to clarify on this one: “They can’t blame that one on me,” he reportedly told a friend. “When I got there, the players all thought he was crazy. And he was.” Lawrence Frank, Brooklyn Nets They were friends. Kidd pushed the Nets to hire Frank on a record salary for an assistant coach. About one month into the season, Kidd had cursed him out and re-assigned him to writing daily reports. Larry Drew, Milwaukee Bucks With perhaps his most devious plot yet, Kidd schemed his way to the Bucks head coaching job while the standing coach, Drew, was oblivious. Drew was under the assumption he was returning. Then Kidd happened. Kidd, during his first marriage, was arrested and cited for domestic abuse of his then wife Joumana. He attended mandatory anger management classes and reconciled. The marriage was rife with accusations of infidelity. Joumana would send Kidd’s son into the Nets’ locker room to retrieve cell phones and any other evidence. She was spying on her own husband. A broken rib, damage to her hearing and next came a divorce. The divorce itself was not amicable. In his final season with the Knicks, Kidd was arrested for driving while intoxicated. He hit a tree and ended up in the woods. Not a great way to start your final season. Everyone makes mistakes along the way. Most of us don’t get the second or third chances that athletes get. If Kidd wants to coach he must pay his dues. So at the time of writing this, it appears Kidd is now the head coach for the Bucks? It appears their owner will do anything for publicity, and hiring Jason Kidd will be a big step. Will Kidd be successful as a head coach with the Bucks? He won’t. Would I ever hire Kidd to coach my team, my franchise or my kid? Never in a million years.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY Week of July 3

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Would you like your savings account to grow? Then deposit money into in it on a consistent basis. Would you like to feel good and have a lot of physical energy? Eat healthy food, sleep as much as you need to, and exercise regularly. Do you want people to see the best in you and give you the benefit of the doubt? See the best in them and give them the benefit of the doubt. Would you love to accomplish your most important goal? Decide what you want more than anything else and focus on it with relaxed intensity. Yes, Aries, life really is that simple -- or at least it is right now. If you want to attain interesting success, be a master of the obvious. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Your urge to merge is heating up. Your curiosity about combinations is intensifying. I think it’s time to conduct jaunty experiments in mixing and blending. Here’s what I propose: Let your imagination run half-wild. Be unpredictable as you play around with medleys and hodgepodges and sweet unions. But don’t be attached to the outcomes. Some of your research may lead to permanent arrangements, and some won’t. Either result is fine. Your task is to enjoy the amusing bustle, and learn all you can from it. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The American painter Ivan Albright (1897-1983) was a meticulous creator. He spent as much time as necessary to get every detail right. An entire day might go by as he worked to perfect one square inch of a painting, and some of his pieces took years to finish. When the task at hand demanded intricate precision, he used a brush composed of a single hair. That’s the kind of attention to minutia I recommend for you -not forever, but for the next few weeks. Be careful and conscientious as you build the foundation that will allow you maximum freedom of movement later this year. CANCER (June 21-July 22): The Venus de Milo is a famous Greek statue that’s over 2,100 years old. Bigger than life size, it depicts the goddess of love, beauty, and pleasure. Its current home is the Louvre Museum in Paris, but for hundreds of years it was lost -- buried underground on the Greek island of Milos. In 1820, a farmer found it while he was out digging on his land. I foresee a comparable discovery by you in the coming weeks, Cancerian. You will uncover a source of beauty, love, or pleasure -- or perhaps all three -- that has been missing or forgotten for a long time. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): According to an ancient Greek myth, Sisyphus keeps pushing a boulder up a steep hill only to lose control of it just before he reaches the top, watching in dismay as it tumbles to the bottom. After each failure, he lumbers back down to where he started and makes another effort to roll it up again -- only to fail again. The myth says he continues his futile attempts for all eternity. I’m happy to report, Leo, that there is an important difference between your story and that of Sisyphus. Whereas you have tried and tried and tried again to complete a certain uphill task, you will not be forever frustrated. In fact, I believe a breakthrough will come soon, and success will finally be yours. Will it be due to your gutsy determination or your neurotic compulsion or both? It doesn’t matter. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Many of America’s founding fathers believed slavery was immoral, but they owned slaves themselves and ordained the institution of slavery in the U.S. Constitution. They didn’t invent hypocrisy, of course, but theirs was an especially tragic version. In comparison, the hypocrisy that you express is mild. Nevertheless, working to minimize it is a worthy task. And here’s the good news: You are now in a position to become the zodiac’s leader in minimizing your hypocrisy. Of all the signs, you can come closest to walking your talk and practicing what you preach. So do it! Aim to be a master of translating your ideals into practical action. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): In the last two decades, seven Academy Award winners have given thanks to God while accepting their Oscars. By contrast,

© Copyright 2012 Rob Brezsny

30 winners have expressed their gratitude to film studio executive Harvey Weinstein. Who would you acknowledge as essential to your success, Libra? What generous souls, loving animals, departed helpers, and spiritual beings have contributed to your ability to thrive? Now is an excellent time to make a big deal out of expressing your appreciation. For mysterious reasons, doing so will enhance your luck and increase your chances for future success. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You have permission to compose an all-purpose excuse note for yourself. If you’d like, you may also forge my signature on it so you can tell everyone that your astrologer sanctified it. This document will be ironclad and inviolable. It will serve as a poetic license that abolishes your guilt and remorse. It will authorize you to slough off senseless duties, evade deadening requirements, escape small-minded influences, and expunge numbing habits. Even better, your extra-strength excuse note will free you to seek out adventures you have been denying yourself for no good reason. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): In the Inuktitut language spoken in northern Canada, the term iminngernaveersaartunngortussaavunga means “I should try not to become an alcoholic.” I encourage you to have fun saying that a lot in the coming days. Why? Now is an excellent time to be playful and light-hearted as you wage war against any addictive tendencies you might have. Whether it’s booze or gambling or abusive relationships or anything else that tempts you to act like an obsessive self-saboteur, you have more power than usual to break its hold on you -- especially if you don’t take yourself too seriously. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Percival Lowell (1855-1916) was an influential astronomer who launched the exploration that led to the discovery of Pluto. He also made some big mistakes. Here’s one: Gazing at Venus through his telescope, he swore he saw spokes emanating from a central hub on the planet’s surface. But we now know that Venus is shrouded with such thick cloud cover that no surface features are visible. So what did Lowell see? Due to an anomaly in his apparatus, the telescope projected shadows from inside his eyes onto the image of Venus. The “spokes” were actually the blood vessels in his retinas. Let this example serve as a cautionary tale for you in the coming weeks, Capricorn. Don’t confuse what’s within you with what’s outside you. If you can clearly discern the difference, your closest relationships will experience healing breakthroughs. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “I believe in getting into hot water; it keeps you clean.” So said British writer G. K. Chesterton. Now I’m passing his advice on to you just in time for the Purge and Purify Phase of your astrological cycle. In the coming weeks, you will generate good fortune for yourself whenever you wash your own brain and absolve your own heart and flush the shame out of your healthy sexual feelings. As you proceed with this work, it may expedite matters if you make a conscious choice to undergo a trial by fire. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “I awake in a land where the lovers have seized power,” writes Danish poet Morten Sondergaard in his fanciful poem “The Lovers.” “They have introduced laws decreeing that orgasms need never come to an end. Roses function as currency. . . The words ‘you’ and ‘I’ are now synonymous.” A world like the one he describes is a fantasy, of course. It’s impossible. But I predict that in the coming weeks you could create conditions that have resemblances to that utopia. So be audacious in your quest for amorous bliss and convivial romance. Dare to put love at the top of your priority list. And be inventive! Homework: Picasso said, “I am always doing that which I cannot do in order that I may learn how to do it.” Your comment? LIFE FROM A DIFFERENT VIEW

V

iewing life right side up is common for each and every one of us. It would literally be unusual and contrary for us to see things upside down. Stepping outside of our habitual behavior patterns is challenging and asking you to go upside down may sound utterly crazy. Balancing on your forearms or walking on your hands is simply an invitation to stir life up a bit. Yes, I am talking about performing a headstand or handstand or possibly a gentler inversion. Why would I propose such an oddity? We can attain a different perspective on life when we see things from a different point of view. Performing inversions is certainly not for everyone and caution is absolutely necessary. Inversions are often executed in yoga classes and occasionally in other workout regimens. An inversion is categorized as a yoga pose (asana) in which the head is below the heart. The first kind of inversions that comes to mind is that of headstand, handstand, forearm balance but there are gentler inversions that can be enjoyed. In fact, downward facing, legs up the wall and standing forward folds are just as beneficial. Some people simply do not have the strength to balance all of their body weight onto their arms. This is perfectly fine and other inversions can be performed that are simple. It is possible certain health conditions would preclude a student from performing an inversion such as a previous injury or illness. You would want to avoid inversions if you have un-medicated high blood pressure, some heart conditions, neck injuries, a recent stroke, detached retina, glaucoma or epilepsy. A professional yoga instructor or fitness trainer should instruct the more challenging inversions. There are several alignment principles that need to be followed when inverting. Securing a guide as well as hands on adjustments can take you to new heights. Why would we want to invert? There are numerous health benefits to placing your head below your heart. 1. When we invert it allows us to reverse

the blood flow and improves our circulation. Gravity is your friend in this case. 2. We can increase our immunity and prevent illness. The lymphatic system is in high gear. The lymph moves through the body to pick up toxins and these are released by the lymph nodes. 3. Get ENERGIZED! Flipping upside down can give you a good boost of energy. 4. RELAX! The calmer inversions (legs up the wall) are cooling inversions and help calm the nervous system and produce feelings of being balanced and calm. 5. Improves your balance. We could all use a little help in this area. Along with the five benefits above you can also improve your core strength and confidence. Stay humble and you will recognize you will see things from a different perspective. Plus, inversions are FUN! To learn more about practicing inversions safely visit a yoga studio or consult a fitness professional who knows how to teach and assist you properly. Seeing life upside down may really allow you to see so much more right side up. Bronwyn Ison is the owner of Evolve Yoga. Bronwyn has been practicing and studying yoga for 14 years. Turning a Setback into a Comeback

R

ecently one of my favorite clients called me. She had distressing news to report and it had to do with a heavy dose of rejection. Donna accepted a new job last February. We both felt it was a good match for her skills and expertise. The compensation package was generous and she was excited about the company, her coworkers and her new boss. After returning from vacation last month, she was told her services were no longer required. I’m not talking downsizing here, essentially my client was fired. California’s labor code is “at will” meaning an employer may terminate an employee at any time with or without cause. In this case the reason had little to do with performance, and more to do with perceived soft skills. The motive for her termination is really not the point. It’s about what happens when someone decides you don’t fit in. What Donna experienced was disappointing, disconcerting and add to that

surprising. Mr. Manager felt the chemistry wasn’t right while his employee happily hummed along professionally executing her duties. My client and I spent some time trying to sort out what happened hoping for some insight or at least a lesson learned and came up short. She sought his approval while he sought her departure. Bottom line is plain and simple. Sometimes in life we experience extremely unfair situations. Difficult as it may be, our only recourse is to get past the rebuff and move on. Few of us escape rejection whether it is in a personal or professional relationship, a tryout when you didn’t make the team, or an opportunity such as not getting the promotion or winning the big sales contract. My recommendation is a course of action taught to me by one of my mentors. Mentally send blessings and positive vibes to those who deemed you did not make the cut. Yes, I’m serious and I’ll tell you why. For your own benefit. We cannot move on toting the heavy cloak of anger and negative energy. By releasing ill will and giving a nod to rejection we can rise above despair and begin planning our ascent to the next challenge. A wise man once said, “A setback is a setup for a comeback.” By the end of our session Donna agreed it was time to file this one under “things I may never understand.” She acknowledged her talent, a strong resume and possession of exactly what she needs to be successful. Game on! With a renewed and heightened sense of purpose I know she will bounce back and make that stellar comeback.

osteopath vs chiropractor

Dr. Kadile, I know that you are an Osteopathic physician, but what is the difference between an osteopath and a chiropractor? -Cynthia, Bermuda Dunes

C

ynthia, osteopaths (D.O. or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) and chiropractors (D.C. or Doctor of Chiropractic) have similarities but are very different. Osteopathic medicine was developed by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, MD, in 1874, at a time when conventional medical practices were frequently ineffective and sometimes harmful. Dr. Still believed the musculoskeletal system played a vital role in health and disease and that the body contained all the elements it needed to maintain health if properly stimulated. Dr. Still opened the first osteopathic medical school in Kirksville, Missouri in 1892. Chiropractic was developed by Daniel David Palmer in 1895. He believed that altered nerve flow was the cause of all disease and that misaligned spinal vertebrae had an affect on the nerve flow. He theorized that restoring misaligned vertebra to their proper alignment would restore health. The Palmer School of Chiropractic was opened in Davenport, Iowa in 1897. Both chiropractors and osteopaths can be considered “holistic” in their approach to patients, meaning evaluating and treating the body as a whole, or looking at the “whole” person. Osteopaths are trained in musculoskeletal manipulation of the whole body where as chiropractors primary focus is manipulation of the spine. DO training involves the premed path in college leading to a four year Bachelor’s degree, followed by four years of medical

school. After medical school, additional specialty training through internship, residency and possibly fellowship continues. DC training also generally requires a 4 year Bachelor’s degree, followed by four years of chiropractic school. Post graduate programs are also available in specialty fields. Both chiropractors and osteopaths can be licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The scope of practice is the major difference between Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine and Doctors of Chiropractic. Osteopaths (DO) -Can practice the entire scope of modern medicine, patient centered, holistic, hands on approach to diagnosing and treating illness and injury -Can choose any specialty, prescribe drugs, perform surgeries, deliver babies and practice medicine anywhere in the United States. -Trained in musculoskeletal manipulative techniques Chiropractors (DC) -Focus on primary care -Perform spinal manipulation -Frequently treat individuals with neuromuscular complaints but are not limited to neuromuscular disorders -Cannot perform surgery -Cannot prescribe medication
