housands poured into the doors of the Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs last year for the inaugural Palm Trees and Tattoos Convention. The event began with UFC champion, Cub Swanson’s victory party, where he celebrated his 6th straight win. The three day event went on to feature many of the nation’s top tattoo industry artists and vendors, live entertainment, a $1000 bikini contest, and the crowning of the first Ms. Palm Trees and Tattoos. This year, co-founder Sean Wood has put pressure on himself to make this year’s convention even more memorable than last. With a full hotel buy-out, a towering mural being painted over three

days on the west facing wall of the Hard Rock, 32 Sullen Artists, including a record number of international artists, there is little doubt that these three days will satisfy every tattoo enthusiasts’ wildest dreams and then some. Wood, the co-owner, marketing, promotions and PR brain behind Tg Tat in Cathedral City, shared how he and business partner, artist, organizer and multi-tasker, Tony Francois, began formulating a plan for this large, upscale, unprecedented undertaking. “A few years ago, when we found out the Hard Rock was coming, Tony and I started brain storming,” he shared. “We wanted to be part of bringing back that 60’s Hollywood glam the city used to be famous for. We’re not bringing them a bunch of freaks and geeks. We are showcasing top notch, fine body art with the industry’s best artists - a more upscale event, proving to people that tattoos are not just about hoodlums and scoundrels.” “Our culture needs to start viewing individuals with tattoos as regular, hardworking, human beings,” shared Wood. “We tried real hard to push that last year, and we will hopefully continue to do so successfully this year. Inevitably, you can’t stand in line at Starbucks without seeing a tattoo on somebody’s hand, neck or wherever. The days of the drunken random tattoo are

July 9 to July 15, 2015

By Lisa Morgan dwindling. Many, these days, are intelligent, researched people making artistic, lifetime commitments to their collection of fine, body art. People who are unfamiliar with the culture will look at someone with tattoos and try not to stare. But really, it’s ok to look deeper. These pieces of art are part of our story that we are proud to have seen permanently on our bodies. The tattoo industry is an ever evolving art form, and you’ll really be able to see that at this year’s convention with the artists we have coming, both national and international.” In the United States alone, tattoos have turned into a 1.65 billion dollar a year industry. Approximately 40% of adults, age 25-40, have at least one tattoo. The surge in the popularity of tattoos has created a growing forum for artists whose canvases are the bodies of those who very specifically collect art from artists who emerge in this industry that has become very visible, thanks in large part to the internet, social media and reality television. Wood, a collector himself, explains, “More and more of these incredible artists come up, and I’m finding myself running out of room. I love all my tattoos. It’s the idea of making a lifetime decision, a statement of a person’s true character and the honest, committed expression of themselves. If I take my shirt off, you can read the journal of my life and know what’s important to me. On my stomach I have my wife. I have music artists Paloma Ford and Eazy-E, a big cobra that says, ‘No snakes in my garden,’ and I have, ‘True love never dies,’ above my chest with a burning heart for my daughter, Ava. They each have a story behind them that I’m happy to tell you about. You can also see the times in my life where I found artists that were obviously at the top of their game. As a collector, when I take my shirt off you’ll know exactly who I am and what I’m about.” “Just as these street artists who have emerged into the art scene, who were once scoffed at, and are now turning out valuable, high priced art, the same thing is happening to tattoo artists. These artists are creating new styles and landscapes. Even the placement of tattoos is evolving. The entire body is being used as a canvas.” continue to page 4

Tattoo Con. continued from page 3 Wood has always been an advocate of researching your artist, and the studio where you plan on getting your tattoo art: “If you’re down to pay $2,000 for a shitty little Honda to get you around town, why wouldn’t you invest at least that much on a badass piece of art that you’ll wear with you for your entire life, if that’s what you’re into. Do your research,” he says. “Do your homework. Make an investment. With today’s technology and social media, there is zero excuse for not being informed or for not finding exactly what you want. Better yet, if you are considering a piece of body art, come to the convention where all that information is in one place for you.” SEVENTH LETTER MURAL: The seventh letter in the alphabet is the letter G, and for this group of street artists, G stands for “Gods of Graffiti”. They represent what many consider to be one of the most racially diverse and prolific street artist crews ever assembled. Three of their more than 100 modern muralists operating

under the Seventh Letter banner, will be painting a huge mural on the west facing wall of the Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs starting Friday night. They will be working day and night, through Sunday, to complete a mural approximately 15 feet high and 100 feet wide. Every morning guests will wake up to a continually evolving, incredible piece of street art. Once it’s finished, it will be up to the Hard Rock Hotel whether it stays up, or gets painted over. SULLEN ARTISTS: What began as a college art project, a love of tattoos and two best friends brainstorming, somehow emerged into Sullen Clothing, a hugely popular clothing line, with designs based on tattoo artistry. The brand that originally focused on the production of t-shirts grew into much more with added products and collaborations with everyone from music artists to athletes. Owners Jeremy Hanna along with business partner and best friend, Ryan Smith, a professional tattoo artist for many years, decided to start a clothing company

as Smith was finishing up with his degree at The Art Center of Pasadena and tattooing on the side. Since Smith’s style of art work was on the darker side, and his tattoo background was designing a lot of tattoos of skulls, they landed on the name “Sullen.” They now work with over 70 amazing artists which represent the Sullen Art Collective. 32 Sullen artists will be part of this year’s convention. Artists are coming all the way from the UK, Dublin, Switzerland, Germany and Canada as well as from throughout the United States. “We are bringing in the heaviest of the heavies,” says Wood. “It’s our sophomore year – there’s a lot of pressure to really bring it. We had several meetings with the Hard Rock, the Health Department and with Sullen. We went over everything that we did last year - what we did right and what we could improve upon. We literally checked off every item on that list of suggestions that we were given to make the event better. This year, attendees can look forward to a more polished show, with a lot more to see as you cruise through

the Hard Rock.” The Sullen artists at the convention include: Rich Pineda, Tattoo Huero, Franco Veskovi, Big Belli, Mr. Flaks, Steve Soto, Justin Burnout, Anam Q, Tony Francois, Remis, Josh Hagan, Justin Hartman, James Strickland, Wane Han, Damon Conklin, Liz Cook, Travis Ross, Mario Roseanu, Josh Duffy, Chase Tafoya, Migugel Arreola, Lio Framasino, Jim Sylvia, Opie Ortiz, Lucky Bastard, Riccy Boy, Sulu’ape, Mr. Flako, Temo Tatts, Tommy Cyclone, Christian Mareh, and Rember Orellana. THE SULLEN ANGELS: The world famous Sullen Angels will be hosting parties at the pool every day of the event. These beautiful, tattooed ladies have been a big part of Sullen’s skyrocketing brand awareness. The next Sullen Angels model search will take place at the convention, where the new 2015 Ms. Palm Trees and Tattoos contest will be hosted by none other than Bernadette Macias of Sullen TV.

SEMINARS: Live Lettering Seminar: Sullen artist, Huero, will be offering a seminar that will be open to anyone in attendance. He will be teaching a new lettering technique that will benefit tattoo artists, as well as artists in other industries. Industry secrets will be taught from one of the best in the business. DIY Print Shop: Ryonet will be offering a 2 to 3 hour class on how to turn your art into cash. This will be a crash course showing you step by step how to turn your artwork into cash using the screen printing process. You’ll learn how to take an image from your phone and go through the process from start to finish, printing a shirt without a middleman. This will be a free course, open to everyone, but early registration is recommended as space will be limited. Permanent Makeup: The Scar Treatment Recovery Center will be taking over the entire spa at the Hard Rock Hotel. They will be offering a seminar on permanent makeup and laser tattoo removal as well as offering those services on site. FLASH ART EXHIBITION: This art show featuring flash pieces from many artists such as Big Sleeps, Norm and Mike Giant, will be held upstairs at the Hard Rock, and will be produced/curated by Eddie Donaldson and Ryan Campbell. Wood sold his smoke shop in Palm Springs, when best friend and current business partner, Tony Francois, came to him about opening a tattoo shop. “We took whatever money we had from selling the business, and put all our money down on city permits and licensing. So we literally had no money to put into the business itself. So I would bartend, and Tony would do tattoos. We’d build one station, then repeat, until it was done. We’ve been doing it ever since.” Tg Tat is now a premier Tattoo Studio specializing in everything from full color realism tattoos to straight traditional tattoos and all things in between. Greg Adams

I

love doing my column every week keeping jazz alive in the desert and introducing you to some great musicians. Today I am writing my column about one of my musical heroes: Greg Adams, who is the founder, composer and

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com

arranger for his band East Bay Soul. For those who don’t know who Greg is let’s start at the beginning of his career. Greg comes from a musical family. He learned to play the trumpet at the tender age of 5, but it took a few years before he could blow it properly. In high school he had a great jazz band teacher who allowed him to arrange the music for the band. His inspirations were the greats like Sinatra and the big band sound. His first gig at 18 years old, right out of high school, was...wait for it... TOWER OF POWER, where he composed and arranged most of their music for the next 25 years. As a huge Tower of Power fan I first saw them when I was 21 with my sister Pam, in Omaha. The entire audience jumped on their chairs and grooved for the entire show. I loved the brass section and the hip music they boogied across the stage with. I had no idea at that time that I would one day be interviewing and actually hiring Greg and his band East Bay Soul to perform for me at an event. A few years ago I was at Spaghettini to interview Michael Paulo who was performing with East Bay Soul that night. I didn’t know East Bay Soul, but once I saw them I was hooked. And I’ve done my best to go to see them perform whenever they were in the area.

July 9 to July 15, 2015

By patte purcell Greg’s diversity has made him the consummate performer and his arranging background is extensive. He has arranged, performed, and recorded with countless artists as diverse as his career, including: Elton John, Santana, The Eurythmics, Rod Stewart, Lyle Lovett, Heart, Linda Ronstadt, Luther Vandross, Aaron Neville, The Brothers Johnson, Phish, Little Feat, Wilson Pickett, Huey Lewis and the News, Al Green, Quincy Jones, BB King, Chicago, Bonnie Raitt, Dionne Warwick, Ray Charles, Peter Frampton, Mariah Carey, Billy Preston, Brothers Johnson, Chameleon, Josh Groban, Madonna, Celine Dion and even played live at Candlestick Park with The Rolling Stones. One of Greg’s favorite accomplishments is writing the soundtrack for the movie Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band produced by famed Beatles producer George Martin. Greg has played on over 500 recordings. You’ve heard Greg’s collaboration with Paul Shaffer on the opening theme of the Late Show with David Letterman and on scores from Top Gun, to Austin Powers in Goldmember with Smashmouth. In 1995, after 25 years, Greg decided to resign from Tower of Power so he could do his own thing. He immediately got an offer from Epic Records and recorded the cover “Smooth Operator” which launched his smooth jazz career. His first hit was #1 for 5 weeks. He had met the love of his life, now his wife and band manager Andrea Adams, and he says he couldn’t do it without her. She handles all the details and marketing and keeps things flowing. Greg has done 8 CDs on his own and now records his own CDs, produces, funds and sells them. It’s a different world out there but he commented he does his own books instead of someone else doing them for him. He’s used Kickstarter crowd funding to fund production of CDs, which can be harrowing since you don’t get any money if you don’t reach your goal. Greg started the band East Bay Soul about 4 years ago. The first CD contained 4 different vocalists. Then a search was on for that one vocalist that would fit the bill. As Greg and Andrea went through the list of singers from A to Z, Greg was ready to give up. He said they were all a bunch of Lynyrd

Skynyrd types and then they got to the W’s and when they heard Darryl Fitzgerald Walker, they looked at each other and said ‘Who is this guy?’ Not only can Darryl sing but he’s an amazing sax player as well. He got the gig. Greg surrounded himself with some of the best in the business including his pal Lee Thornburg from Tower of Power, Joey Navarro on keys, Greg Vail on sax, and Johnnie Bamont on alto sax. Band members include Herman Matthews on drums, Dwayne ‘Smitty’ Smith on bass, KaTa Matsuno on guitar and Johnny Sandoval on percussion. It’s one smoking band! He just released their third CD, That’s Life, which is a take on the Sinatra “That’s Life” song with a distinctive Greg Adams twist. Greg is excited because this is the first one in 8 CDs to have a real string section on it. The opening track “Little Black Dress” is sure to be a chart topper. The orchestration and a new set of ears to mix it assure that this CD will be full of hits as well. I’m proud to announce that Greg Adams and East Bay Soul will be headlining ‘SUMMER JAZZFEST’ on July 27th, from 5-10pm, at the Hacienda Cantina and Beach Club in Palm Springs. VIP reserved seat tickets are $50 each and gives you access to the VIP Lounge. General Admission is $30. ($10 more for both tickets at the door). To get your tickets call me at 1-702-219-6777. Sponsored by CV Weekly this event will have 3 bands and 5 national artists.

Rock en Español with something for everybody.

ere at CV Weekly, we frequently and great-heartedly boast about the quality of music that originates from our beloved desert and we are proud to be able to showcase the wide variety of musical genres that are so impressively represented in our community. For most desert residents, it’s no longer a surprising fact that top-notch artists performing country, hip-hop, jazz, reggae, metal and everything in-between can easily be found at multiple venues throughout the valley on any given weekend. There is definitely no exception to that when it comes to Spanish language music in the Coachella Valley and if you don’t believe me, you have yet to meet the guys from Nel Pastel. Nel Pastel consists of brothers, Juan Carlos Barajas (lead vox and rhythm guitar) and Jesus “Chuey” Barajas (drums) along with Geraldo “Jerry” Caballero (bass) Erick “Castro” Magaña (lead guitar/vox). Each of the five members of the group was born within different regions of Mexico and migrated to the Coachella Valley during their childhood which is an important detail that leads to an interesting fusion of musical and cultural influences. They have found some success in the east valley and lately they have started booking gigs in a wider geographical area. That said… these guys are striving for opportunities to expose and prove themselves to a multi-lingual, multicultural audience. Over the holiday weekend I had a fantastic time hanging out with founding band members, Juan Carlos Bajaras and Erick “Castro” Magaña while they reflected on the journey of what has become, Nel

Pastel. Bajaras: “Erick, Chuey and I started playing together back in 2009 when we formed our previous band. The reason we got together in the first place was because a band that was booked to play at a New Year’s Eve party had to cancel and the gig paid a thousand bucks. I knew I could sing and play guitar and my brother was a drummer.” Bajaras continues: “I contacted Erick and a bass player to ask if they were interested in the job. They agreed and somehow we booked the gig. The catch was that we

July 9 to July 15, 2015

had to do three sets for that party which means we had to learn somewhere around 40 songs in just a few days. It was a variety of stuff like rock, banda and cumbias. It was basically a bunch of popular, Spanish covers that we knew the people wanted to hear. Miraculously, we pulled it off.” Magaña: “Yeah, it’s funny because before that we were all friends we played with separate bands. We had never played together before. When I got the call and he was telling me this party was on New Year’s Eve I was like, ‘Dude, that party is three

days from now!....Oh well, f*** it! Let’s do it!’ Everything went really well. The crowd loved it and people kept asking us when and where we were playing next. That’s when we decided that maybe we had something here and should stay together.’’ Bajaras: “We did our thing with that band for a short time and then life sent us in separate directions for a while. Erick moved to Alaska….jobs, families and all that separated us for some time. Eventually, he came back and I asked him if he wanted to join another band I was in. He said yes and did that for a little while.” Magaña: “The problem was that we were still doing the same old thing and some of us felt stuck. We wanted to evolve, work on original material and expand artistically. Not that we minded doing covers...those are great, but even with the covers we were doing...some of us wanted to be able to put in our creativity to adapt the styles and improvise more. Unfortunately, other members of the band wanted to stick as close to the original versions as possible. Artistic differences, I guess. The band we are now still does plenty of covers and our audiences like it that way. But now when we do covers we can turn them into something completely our own.” Bajaras: “We love to mix genres like rock, reggae and ska with Latin American styles of music and switch them up mid-song. Ultimately, what we would love to see is our fans that are into the Spanish stuff get into the rock stuff and visa-versa. We think we have something for everybody.” For links and show dates, “Like” Nel Pastel on Facebook.com/nelpastel.

TRANSLATOR (Omnivore Records)

“Sometimes People Forget”

Consider This

T

he accepted definition of a “onehit wonder” is a band or artist that achieved chart success only once, or had a signature song that overshadowed the rest of their oeuvre. The Pop Music landscape is littered with one-hit wonders. One-hit-wonders ranged from the ridiculous (“Sukiyaki” by Kyu Sakamoto), to the sublime (“Come On Eileen” by Dexy’s Midnight Runners). Several years ago the Riverside Press-Enterprise conducted an exhaustive survey and concluded that the highest concentration of one-hit wonders occurred between 1974 and 1975. Technically, Translator falls into the one-hit wonder category because of their jangly and insistent 1982 hit, “Everywhere That I’m Not.” The song quickly became a playlist staple on alternative radio stations like KROQ in Los Angeles, 91.X in San Diego and KUSF in San Francisco. It was also put into heavy rotation on the burgeoning music television station, MTV. But that song was just the tip of the iceberg for this talented band. Translator formed in Los Angeles in 1979. Singer-songwriter/guitarist Steve Barton was a precocious kid. He played in his first band, Present Tense, at age 11. By the time he was 14 they had recorded two songs for Curb Records, remained in the vault because a bandmate’s dad wouldn’t sign a recording contract. That effectively broke up Present Tense. Barton’s next big gig was portraying John Lennon in a Beatles tribute band. They played in high schools and amusement parks, they even toured Japan. On the way home from a tour, Barton and drummer Dave Scheff (Ringo) decided to form their own band, Translator. They cycled through a few bassists before recruiting Scheff’s Santa Cruz pal, Larry Dekker. As a Punky trio, they persevered for about six months before poaching singer-songwriter/ guitarist, Robert Darlington from another local band, The Lies. Suddenly the true Translator sound coalesced. Feeling marginalized by the increasingly aggro L.A. Punk scene, the band relocated to the Bay Area. They recorded a demo of “Everywhere That I’m Not” with producer David

Kahne at his Automatt recording studio. The demo was played on KUSF and received tons of requests. This impressed Howie Klein, who hosted his own show on the station, along with running his own fledgling record label, 415. After checking out the band live, he offered them a recording deal. 415 (pronounced four-one-five, not fourfifteen) not only referenced San Francisco’s area code, but also alluded to the local law enforcement code for disturbing the peace. Howie Klein founded the label with Chris Knab and Butch Bridges in 1978. Concentrating on local bands, the label promoted mostly New Wave and Punk music. Early signings included The Nuns, The Offs and Pearl Harbor And The Explosions. But the label’s signature sound was best exemplified by Romeo Void, Translator and Wire Train. David Kahne was behind the boards for Translator’s debut, Heartbeats And Triggers. 415 had recently inked a distribution deal with Columbia Records affording their bands national exposure. But none of that would have mattered if Translator didn’t have the goods. Their guitar-driven sound stood out in a sea of shiny synth-pop like A Flock Of Seagulls, Talk,Talk and Human League. The band and Kahne quickly followed up in 1983 with their sophomore effort, No Time Like Now. Some complained the sound was “too New Wave,” which seems ridiculous in retrospect. Switching to Ramones producer, Ed Stasium, their next two albums, 1985’s Translator, and 1986’s Evening Of The Harvest were pretty close to perfect. Unfortunately MTV and a capricious public had moved on to craptastic fluff like Kajagoogoo, A-Ha and Mr. Mister. Following Evening Of The Harvest, Translator quietly broke up. Each band member seemed to hibernate for a few years. Steve Barton reemerged first, carefully cultivating a solo career and fronting the band Oblivion Click. Dave Scheff continued working as a drummer, most recently touring with the Dead Kennedys. He reteamed with Larry Dekker playing in the Bang Bang Men. Robert Darlington published a book

of poetry and released a solo album. The band reunited occasionally, most notably at SXSW in 2006 and a sold out show at Slims in San Francisco in 2009. Three years later they released a fifth album entitled Big Green Lawn. Now the band has assembled Sometimes People Forget, a collection of demos recorded between 1979 and 1985. The first four tracks that open the album, “Translator,” “Lost,” “Everywhere That I’m Not” and “Fiendish Thingy” go back to the very beginning. Which as the “Sound Of Music” reminds us; is a very good place to start. These songs represent Translator as an upstart trio from Los Angeles. The song “Translator” is a blast of Rockabilly brio powered by yowly vocals, a ramshackle rhythm and thrash/twang guitar. The lyrics are an urgent request for clear communication. “Lost” is Punky in all the right places, but also includes chiming, 12-string guitar riffs that hint at a sophistication to come. The demo for “Everywhere...” is pretty close to the finished product. But it’s endearingly ragged and splayed, slightly behind the beat. Steve Barton’s snarly delivery belies the haunted and tortured quality of the lyrics. “I thought I felt your touch, in my car and on my clutch/But I guess it was just someone that felt a lot like I remember you do.” “Fiendish Thingy” is the real surprise. Rumbling bass lines, tumbling drums and angular guitar riffs connect, fully in line with the Minimalist-Funk of British bands like Gang Of Four and Wire, (who were exploring this style at the exact same time). The lyrics are simultaneously anguished and amusing; “Hacking my way through the jungles of jealousy, cracks in my mind-can’t sleep…I go crazy when jealousy sits on my face.” Both “Optimism” and “Necessary Spinning” were recorded in L.A. after Robert Darlington joined the fold. “Optimism” is 102 seconds of furious guitar clangor wed to a pummeling backbeat. Barton mixes surprisingly labyrinthine alliteration on the verse to get across the chorus’ philosophical point; ”This can be such a god damn rough life, sometimes people forget what optimism is and that’s a drag.” “Necessary Spinning” is equally frenetic, powered by prickly, circuitous guitar chords. The lyrics evoke childhood memories of oscillating wildly on the lawn, underscored by the wistful refrain, “sometimes I wish that I was nine years old again.”

Robert Darlington came into his own pretty quickly as a songwriter for the band. His first two contributions, “Eraser” and “Everything Is Falling” add a brittle edge to the proceedings. The instrumentation on the former is skittering and fractious, a series of aural switchbacks. Darlington’s vocals are comically overwrought, recalling a torturous relationship; “I knew somebody just like you, she treated me like a goddamn fool/Every night was in inquisition, an auto-da-fe and a conflagration.” The latter is a jaunty, mid-tempo romp, the winsome melody and sweet guitar break cushion an overly-cautious worry for the days ahead. “I live in constant memory, the future is so uncertain/I walk into a palace and hide behind the curtain.” It’s kind of fascinating to listen to these demos, (which, by the way, are so masterful and accomplished, they could be the finished product), and marvel at how Translator’s own music foreshadowed myriad styles to come. Take “Get Out,” an anxious plea for the U.S. to ditch their covert operations in El Salvador. The Jazz/Punk chords and stop-start rhythm totally presage the Minutemen’s entire oeuvre. Both “Gravity” and “We Fell Away” hint at the jangle and chime R.E.M. seemed to trademark in the late ‘80s. Meanwhile, “Breathless Agony” shreds like a Pixies song and “Friends Of The Future” offers a 21st century Garage Rock intensity that could easily sandwich between the Strokes and the White Stripes. As forward-looking as Translator was, they still found ways to obliquely honor their antecedents. “Winter Crying” matches Velvet Underground foreboding to Neil Young & Crazy Horse style dissonance. “Brouhaha” feels like Blue Oyster Cult-meets-the-Sonics. “Inside My Mind” blends California dreamy harmonies to Byrdsy guitars. Finally, “Fall Forever,” anchors strummy guitar chords to a sincere vocal delivery. It kinda-sorta echoes the Beatles’ “Do You Want To Know A Secret.” Other standout tracks include the shambolic “These Old Days” and the modal melancholia of “Is There A Heaven Singing.” The album closes with the Psychedelic Cow-Punk hoedown of “I’ll Be Your Summer.” Sometimes People Forget accomplishes two goals. It’s a treasure trove of “new” music that should satisfy Translator fanatics and completists everywhere. But more importantly, it provides an introduction, a gateway drug, to the rich musical legacy from this wholly underrated and under-appreciated band.

Rich Pineda, Ink Master

T

his weekend, July 10-12, Sullen Clothing and Art Collective, TG Tattoos and many other fantastic sponsors will kick off the second annual Palm Trees and Tattoos Convention at the Hard Rock Hotel in Palm Springs. Last year’s convention ended up becoming a respectable success on many levels, but considering the fact it was the first event of its kind thrown in the area, it actually ended up becoming a smash-hit with nowhere to go but up. Now attracting international attention, we have a handful of people to thank for the initial success of our valley’s first and only tattoo convention. One of those people is the auspiciously talented, yet humble, Rich Pineda. When I use the word “humble” in my description of Pineda I am not merely blowing smoke to flatter. To be completely honest, during my conversations with Pineda, I had a hard time associating him with the guy who’s mind-blowingly phenomenal artwork I had previously researched online. With a penchant for realism, particularly portraits, Rich Pineda’s portfolio includes some of the most intricately beautiful and near-perfect tattoos that I have ever seen. Yet, he spent much of the time during our interview praising the talents of others. Despite the humility that seems to be his nature, Pineda’s work has earned him respect amongst tattoo artists and enthusiasts across the globe and he is consistently featured in many of today’s top tattoo magazines both nationally and internationally. Although he is a native of Hermosa Beach who spent most of his adolescent years along the coast, Pineda’s family has history in the Coachella Valley and his frequent childhood visits eventually turned into a long-term relocation. Pineda: “We ended up moving out to Palm Springs and one day

a friend of mine who was house-sitting for my parents invited me to a party in Yucca Valley which was a place I had never heard of. He said it was close to Palm Springs so I went out there and met a girl. I asked her to marry me two weeks after that and there began my life in the high-desert. That was almost 14 years ago. We just recently moved back to the beach.” Perhaps the most surprising fact regarding Pineda’s skills and notoriety in the tattoo world is that he has only been tattooing for about five years. Although he did utilize his skills as an artist for various business ventures such as painting graphic designs on vehicles, he did not begin what was destined to become his now successful career until he had lived and worked in the high desert for nearly a decade. The very place where “tatting found” Pineda. Pineda: “Everything I was doing previously, even when it involved art, was just something to supplement what I was trying to do in music. It was during that time that tattooing kind of found me through my buddy Jeff Cooper. He had seen some art projects I had been working on one night and I guess he saw potential in me. I don’t even remember exactly how the conversation went, but shortly thereafter I started learning under Cooper in what turned out to be an extremely unconventional apprenticeship that only lasted about two weeks before I was tattooing. That worked for me. Considering the facts that I had a family to support and the music thing was slow-going, I had no time for a typical apprenticeship. Also, I started a bit later in life and had developed a lot of skills with time. I had run businesses before and understood how that aspect of the industry worked. On top of that, I was learning under a man that I consider one of the best of the best. I think all that combined helped get me to my current place in this industry quicker than the norm.” Fast-forward a few years, Pineda is now a featured artist at this week’s Palm Trees and Tattoos Convention. Despite the fact that he has definitely done the rounds both when it comes to tattoo conventions, he is particularly excited about this event. Pineda: “Last year, Sean from TG Tattoos in Cathedral City contacted me about this idea he had for a tattoo show downtown Palm Springs. I introduced him to my friends at Sullen and contacted a few friends in the industry. Together, everyone put on an event that was honestly one of the funnest and coolest of its kind that I have ever been a part of. The buzz went international and the success garnered so much attention that this year we have artists and attendees coming in from all over the world. This event will only become more and more successful and I am really proud to be a part of it.” Check out Rich Pineda online! richpinedatattoos.com

Wimbledon serves it up at the London wine bars

W

ake Up! Get out of bed… drag a comb across my head. Greetings again sports fans! As I mentioned in my recent wine article: Wondrous Wine at Wimbledon, I may not know my way around the new and up-coming wineries in England, but we’re quickly making the rounds of some established and new wine bars, only minutes away from the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. The desert temperatures followed me to Wimbledon—as least for the first week— with record heat going on. Every reason for a quick jaunt through the streets of London for a run-about to visit and taste at the wine bar. But just a fast glass or two and perhaps a bite—the present-day legends of tennis are on the green green grass of old! The Tournament may be afoot, but the mind is abreast here in London that ye olde wines bars are opening all over town. With a smart business attitude, the trend is to provide a small, ever-changing wine list with low mark-ups and small tasty dishes in the offering. And if London is on your travel radar, do keep these vino venues in mind. The same British wit continues as with traditional funny/odd pub names, over at the Green Man & French Horn. It’s the perfect place to duck into for a refreshing and thirst-quenching quaff in these current 90 degree plus afternoons: They specialize in Loire Valley wines!! which include the Sancerres, Vouvrays, the Anjou Rosés, and the Pouilly Fumés that are light and low on the alcohol. An impressive selection by the glass—along with terrific bistro fare. Bottoms Up! Another wine bar with a French feel is the 28°-50° Wine Workshop & Kitchen. Named after the latitude at which vines can be grown, you can get some really interesting stuff for a great price—much of it by the glass, and you can order a quick taste just to enjoy a wine you’ve only heard of in wine magazines. And the owner is not only a Master Sommelier but a Michelin star restaurateur. You think his bar bites are terrific? Jumping over to a real English feel, visit the Kensington Wine Rooms. Its Kensington crowd treat it like a members’ club, lingering over bottles and meals and filling the place with atmosphere and confident conversation. This is a major wine bar with 40 wines by the glass and 100 more in bottles. To Americans, the bar staff sounds like they can be a bit huffy but they’re actually a good group and take pleasure in guiding your choices. Food consists of nibbles and platters. Now if the Californian vino lover wishes to feel really at home, they’ll head out to

Mission. Referring neither to a position nor a crusade to save souls, this Mission is named after the San Francisco neighborhood. It’s a great looking place—you’ll certainly want to enjoy a glass of wine here. The bar’s corrugated ceiling is a huge railway arch that is low lit in the evenings. The walls are wood-paneled, a real palm tree soars to the roof, and a spacious courtyard faces the traffic-free road. The short wine list has about 20 of wines daily, but a big selection of California wines and some Old World beauties. As for bubblies, they pour their signature sparkler Mission Fizz, along with a Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs. Wines are mostly from small producers, though you can also find the Albariño from Bonny Doon and the Grenache Blanc from Tablas Creek Vineyards. The Remedy. This place is the best when you enjoy being perplexed! The wine list is almost deliberately obscure, covering lesser-known regions, grapes and style of wines. There are no big brands, no bigname Bordeaux, no names that you would know—isn’t that fun!

The staff is wine-nerdy and hilarious—a very hospital group. Savor here, the wines less chosen. Quality Chop House. This is as much a restaurant as it is a charming wine bar with its 19th Century “chop and a glass” tradition. What you like here is that the owner is the son of the very famous wine writer Jancis Robinson, so the wine and bistro will have to be exemplary. Wine gems are here to be found. But here at Chop, you’re always asking yourself—does mummy Jancis get to drink for free? Who charges their own Mom?

An oldie but Goldie, a tip of the hat to Gordon’s—the oldest wine bar in the capital. Opening its doors in 1890, little has changed in the bar. Wooden walls are covered in yellowing newspaper cuttings and posters from a bygone era. The lighting and the ceilings are low. The Sherry selection—as one would expect—is stellar; served in the traditional way, straight from the barrel and generously filled up to the brim. Vinoteca. We’ve been to many wine bars around the world that utilize that name. This one is the least pretentious and very charming with a friendly wine staff to joke with. Prosecco’s on tap and interesting & exploratory wine flights re: regions & varietals, are ready to be lined up. Actually this year, for the first time in Wimbledon’s history, tennis fans are offered English wine: The 2014 Pinot Gris from Bolney Estate served to guests in hospitality suites at the All England Lawn Club and the box seats at the stadium. At around $30 (U.S.) the wine is described “a fragrant aroma of rose, jasmine and conference pears” with “a lovely creamy freshness”. Sounds English to me! Pip Pip Cherrio!

Movie Reviews with Robin E. Simmons

AN EPITAPH FOR AMY

Screeners No.172

“exhilarating” and “stunning.” Although not for everyone, if you like psychological drama that is not heavy-handed, you may enjoy this unusual story set in a beautiful location. Paramount. Blu-ray.

AMY

Asif Kapadia’s extraordinary biopic of singer Amy Winehouse packs a powerful punch to the gut. Experience this unfiltered look at a life that touched millions with her brilliant – sometimes searing -- words and voice but battles pop culture fame and deadly addictions. In her short life, Amy releases only two albums, but she was among the biggest pop music stars in the UK. In fact, it would not be a stretch to call her an icon. She bared her soul in the eclectic mix of songs (“Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good”) she wrote and sang. Fans and critics rightfully compared her to Billy Holiday and Sarah Vaughan among others giants. Her ironic name and disastrous personal life -- along with her unfiltered music -- were a perfect storm that finally ended in a sad fugue. Kapadia’s film wisely and specifically utilizes concert and private footage that reveals Amy’s brilliance and, saddest of all, her despairing descent and passing at the age of 27. (Yes, she’s part the infamous club.) You will long remember this brilliant film that is also about our fragile mortality, the creative drive and the choices we make on the road of life. Highest recommendation. Now playing. NEW FOR THE HOME THEATER: KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE

Solidly in the vein of the Roger Moore “James Bond” movies, KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE is a bloody violent action ride that yanks the audience into an elite British counter-espionage league where manners and sartorial splendor weigh as heavily as courage, teamwork and fighting skills. Not for all tastes, this thrilling adventure

lashes out at real evil in our contemporary world -- including churches that espouse hatred and bigotry. Based on the acclaimed Mark Miller comics and directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass), this eyepopping film delivers far more than the trailer hinted at. I like that. (I hate seeing the best moments of a film in the trailer, don’t you?) In this first outing – I’m pretty sure more adventures will follow – we are introduced to a team of newbies who have been recruited to the Kingsman unit by dapper Harry Hart (Colin Firth). Gary “Eggsy” Unwin (Taron Egerton), a rough around-the-edges, uncultured street kid from south London stands out in the ultra competitive training process and is assigned to help bring down twisted genius Richmond Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson) who has plans to kill world leaders and the 1% in order to save the planet. Wait, say that again? In the end, it all makes sense. Co-stars Mark Hamill, Michael Caine, Mark Strong and Sophie Cookson make this eye-popping, assault on the senses work in ways that remind us what movies can do when all cylinders are firing. Watchable extras go behind the scenes. Fox. Blu-ray.

CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA Based on an idea from Juliette Binoche, this intriguing psychological mystery drama from director Olivier Assayas features Binoche as a veteran actress Maria Enders who must face an unsettling memory of her former self when she signs on to take part in the restaging of a play that launched her into stardom 20 years ago. Binoche plays Enders as an actress at the peak of fame and acclaim. Twenty years earlier she played the younger role of Sigrid, a seductive, manipulative young woman who drives her boss Helena to suicide. Now, in the planned revival, she is playing the older Helena. We find Enders rehearsing her lines in the remote Swiss Alps region of Sils Maria with her assistant (Kristin Stewart). When the younger Hollywood actress (Chloë Grace Moretz) arrives, Enders finds herself facing a scandal ridden but bright and charmingly ambiguous reflection of former self. Now Enders must face her demons. Binoche, Stewart and Moretz are perfect together. Stewart in particular has been the subject of scathing ridicule but shows her skill here. For her performance, she was the first American to win the prestigious César Award for Best Supporting Actress. This intelligent film plays with notions of identity and ambition and the toll time demands on our souls. Critics have used words like

Although not a mainstream hit, I was entertained by Johnny Depp‘s strange channeling of what seems to be Terry Thomas – complete with a gap toothed self-effacing grin. I laughed out loud at his wonderful twit-like incarnation of Kyril Bonfiglioli’s fictional Charlie Mortdecai who likes to live the good life – he’s been called a “professional bon-vivant” -- but is unfortunately often financially embarrassed and must resort to his questionable art dealings to stay afloat. Bonfiglioli’s witty books (“Don’t Point That Thing at Me,” “Something Nasty in the Woodshed” and “After You with the Pistol”) have long been a favorite of Depp’s. “They are irreverent and insane in a way I thought would translate well to the screen,” he said. (Depp even gave a copy to co-star Paul Bettany during the TRANSCENDANCE shoot.) On screen, it’s easy to see the fun Depp has in playing the not so dashing, mustachioed and blithely desperate Mortdecai. The top-notch supporting cast features Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Paul Bettany, Olivia Munn and Jeff Goldblum. It must be said the mustache is also a major character. I liked this old school throwback that reminds of Blake Edward’s best “Pink Panther” movies. Director David Koepp keeps the complicated shenanigans on track for maximum effect. A nice extra explores the set during production. Lionsgate. Bluray. robinesimmons@aol.com

Book Review

A Genius For Our Time

E

ver wonder where the Benjamin Franklins, Albert Einsteins or Steve Jobs are today? Are we not desperate for moral men and women with vision, inspiration and plans to improve life for our species, to find answers to our biggest dilemmas? In Ashlee Vance’s Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX and the Quest for a Fantastic Future (Ecco, 400 pages) it takes more than genius to bring big ideas to fruition. It takes a lot of money, business acumen and a touch of madness to save the human race. When entrepreneur, inventor and futurist Elon Musk decided to cooperate on this biography with author Vance, he asked the technology writer and journalist if he thought he was insane. Vance admits he wasn’t sure how to answer Musk’s question. Thus starts the biography about a genius of our time and perhaps a savior of the human race. Musk is a man with a mission. “If we can solve sustainable energy and be well on our way to becoming a multiplanetary species with a self-sustaining civilization on another planet – to cope with a worstcase scenario happening and extinguishing human consciousness --- then I think that would be really good.”

Elon Musk

biography

If you don’t know of Musk, it’s time. He, and many others, believe we are making earth uninhabitable for humans. So Musk is serious about human beings colonizing Mars. He has done the math and has a realistic plan. Impossible? Insane? Think again. Musk is the mind of SpaceX. His company is sending rockets into space that will soon carry humans. He has built the company from the ground up, not relying on the technology of the past or Russian engineering. He has brought rocket science into the modern age and he has done it with a fierce tenacity. He is doing it for less money, employing thousands and making everything in America eliminating all foreign dependence.

As CEO of Tesla Motors, Musk’s Model S electric car can travel 300 miles on a single charge and be recharged for free across the state at power stations supplied by SolarCity, his solar panel manufacturing company. Every business quarter, an equivalent of 400,000 gallons of fossil fuel doesn’t pollute. And that’s just a start. New factories are under construction to massproduce batteries and an affordable Tesla vehicle. Musk has poured his heart, soul and wealth into sustaining SpaceX, Tesla and SolarCity because he believes in the technology “to the extent that they are the right things to pursue for the betterment of mankind.” If these technologies are not enough to float your boat, Musk has also started work on the Hyperloop – a high-speed train that will be able to carry you (and your car) to Las Vegas in 10 minutes. Forget the Bullet Train from LA to San Francisco that will cost billions to build and take twice as long as a plane ride. If Musk has his way, the Hyperloop will get you to San Fran in 30 minutes – with your car. Further, the Hyperloop will run on renewable clean energy at a fraction of the cost. This biography mainly tells the story of Musk’s business prowess, his unstoppable nature and grandiose (but real) ideas. With degrees in physics and economics he is both scientist and entrepreneur who knows how to get things done. The author includes Musk’s family origins starting in the United States, moving to Canada and then to South Africa. His ancestry is an insight into Musk’s thinking, genius and intensity. But accounts of Musk’s private life are minimal. A divorced father of five, Musk’s journey thus far is about the evolution and maturity of a visionary entrepreneur who refuses to let fools, nay-sayers and parasites dictate or derail his mission. It was a surprise to discover that Musk did not come up with PayPal – the online financial service -- but merged his company Zip2 and X.com with Confinity’s PayPal. PayPal sold to eBay for $1.5 billion making

Musk rich enough to pursue his dreams. Nikola Tesla is an absolute hero of mine. So when I first heard of Tesla Motors, I was instantly in love with Musk and his company. Turns out, it was not Musk who gave the electric car company its name, but founders Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Musk came in as an investor taking over to ensure its future. Musk indeed has everything to do with the look and development of the top award-winning vehicle ever by “Motor Trend,” “Consumer Affairs” and Auto Club of America. This is an exciting book and a great read. For a biography, Vance tells it like a suspense-thriller as Musk fights off takeovers and bankruptcy and challenges the status quo of government contracts. It’s better than a sci-fi novel as Musk explains how to generate sustainable global energy and terra form Mars. (Even the footnotes and appendices are interesting and fun to read.) The amazing technology he is developing and manufacturing will not only benefit us now, but in our interplanetary future as well. Musk is an intriguing character. He just turned 44 and has already changed the world. And perhaps even saved the human race from destroying itself and the amazing creatures with whom we share this beautiful planet. By definition, Musk is indeed a hero. He may not always be likable as he demands the best and requires total dedication of time and energy. He believes there is no time to waste. Some day, I hope to have SolarCity panels on my roof and a Tesla Model X in my garage charging at my Tesla Powerwall. Madman or not, I’m all in with Musk. Schedule my flight to Mars.

Stop and Think!

O

bserving the calls being dispatched this weekend certainly proved a lack of common sense, civility and what a tender box we truly are in as fireworks and careless acts sparked additional wildfires, homes and even commercial business fires this Fourth of July weekend. Mostly from illegal fireworks. Stop and Think! Fires raged locally and as far north as the state of Washington, as thousands of acres continued to be destroyed and communities threatened. The worst part about this is we’ve only just begun reminds Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. We have already started a very long, hot and dangerous summer. Stop and Think! This Fourth of July also proved a spike in lack of common sense and civility being

exercised as senseless road rage incidents, shootings and assaults occurred throughout the area. Boating accidents and traffic accidents were also on the rise. More people than ever are not paying attention while texting and driving. Not to mention an increase of hiker related rescue calls from dehydration and unprepared outdoor activities. Stop and Think! I believe in the importance to stop and think. Play the tape forward before acting upon a thought and determine what could happen or what are potential the consequences of your actions. If we just “Stop and Think” we might see different outcomes. The choices you make right now, could be harmful and even deadly to yourself and others. Stop and Think! Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna

RealEstate Cheap Money, Get Some While You Still Can

W

hen I bought my first house in the early 1980’s mortgage interest rates were over 16%. Most of you reading this article are likely too young to even imagine such a thing or too old to remember the not-so-good old days. But for those of us who were trying to make a living selling real estate back then we will never forget it… or as the outlaw Josey Wales put it, “Dying ain’t much of a living”. Those were some pretty tough times but somehow we managed to get through them and by comparison, interest rates have (with a few hiccups along the way) gone down ever since. Today our mortgage interest rates are still hovering around historic lows even though they hit a 9 month high this past week (ending July 2, 2015) averaging 4.08% for a 30 year fixed rate mortgage. This is still super cheap money but most economic experts predict that it won’t be around much longer... and I am starting to believe them! Before I get into some different ways to take advantage of these low interest rates, let’s take a quick look at the real estate sales activity for the month of June. At the end of May we were still lagging behind last year’s numbers despite some minor gains being made. Would a much improved June finally catch our numbers up to last year’s figures?

Here’s what happened. According to the Desert Area MLS (as of 07/01/15) there were 841 pendings of residential properties here in the Coachella Valley in June. There were 898 pendings in the previous month (May) which means activity is slowing down following our normal seasonal sales pattern, but certainly not as drastically as last year. Looking at the pendings from June of last year (2014) there were only 698 pendings for the month of June. This is a huge year over year increase in pendings and the first sign of solid improvement over last year. What’s more, it is good news for likely closings in July! Checking the actual sales data we see the same thing. In May there were 804 solds and in June we had 809 solds reflecting MORE closings than in May and the best news of all is that last year in June we only sold 764 homes. This equates to a 6% increase in year over year June sales. This is the first significant gain that we have made over last year’s sales and with the increase in June’s pendings we may just catch up with last year’s sale totals by the end of July. Our inventory of homes for sale dropped significantly AGAIN this month with 4,567 homes available as of June 1, 2015 compared to 4,030 as of July 1, 2015. That’s almost a 12% drop in inventory in just one month and

By Bruce cathcart while there are still over 660 MORE homes on the market compared to the same time last year this could become a major factor later this year if the trend continues. As we learned last month, when real estate inventories dry up, sales volume slows down and prices usually go up! We will continue to watch this closely over the next few months. So what are some ways that you can get some of the cheap money that’s available right now? If you are currently renting your home you need to seriously consider buying one. If you have decent credit and can scrape together a minimum down payment you will discover that right now you may be able to buy a home for the same amount you are currently paying in rent. This is only possible because rents are currently up and interest rates are down. If you currently own your home you should review your current interest rate and equity position and consider a refinance. You may be able to significantly reduce your current monthly payment and/or the term of your current loan. How about buying an investment property for yourself or perhaps help your children to buy a home? You say that sounds good but you don’t have a 10% or 20% down payment saved up. Consider refinancing your home for more than your current mortgage and use the extra money for your down payment. On the other hand, if you have extra cash sitting idle in the bank,

t is far too hot to write a serious article this week. What does this mean to you? It means that you will be getting a series of humorous and factual tidbits. If you memorize all of these facts, you can be the hit of any barbecue, pool party or other gathering that you may attend during these hot days of summer in the Coachella Valley. Here goes: According to a study by Dr. Satoshi Kanazawa of the London School of Economics, men who cheat on their partners have lower IQs. Meanwhile, people with ring fingers that are longer than their middle fingers are more likely to be interested in casual sex. In a completely unrelated fact, there is a type of fish called a “Slippery Dick”.

While contemplating halichoeres bivittatuses (Slippery Dicks), did you know that Donald Trump was moved to the New York Military Academy by his parents as a kid as he would often get in trouble. It’s hard to believe, I know. In thinking of all things presidential, the U.S. government spent $277,000 on pickle research during the first year of the Clinton Administration. They failed to research cigars though. New York’s Skidmore College offers a class studying and researching the sociology of Miley Cyrus. It’s time to take Skidmore off of the list of potential colleges for our kids and grandkids.

I

f you are a regular reader of my weekly legal column you know that I always end with the admonition: DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE...CALL A TAXI...IT IS A LOT CHEAPER THAN CALLING ME. If you did not follow this suggestion and instead received a DUI over the July 4th weekend then you need to know what to do if you are arrested. With temperatures hitting 110 last week and July 4th occurring on a Saturday, many of our neighbors drank too much beer and foolishly got behind the wheel of a car OR GOLF CART? Yes you can get arrested for DUI while driving a golf cart! You, like most drivers, probably did not know that the breath test at the scene is Optional as are the Field Sobriety Tests. Therefore you should courteously ELECT not to take them. Instead you should say you want to cooperate with law enforcement and you are happy to take a Blood test. If you are one of the many “locals” that encountered this challenge last week you have a multitude of decisions to make for which you are yet aware. Your first decision is do I hire an attorney? Do I try to handle it myself or do I qualify for a public defender? My recommendation is to go to AVVO where local attorneys rate one another. You should hire a local DUI attorney with a 10.0 perfect

24

rating. These DUI cases can be complicated and sometimes as complex as a serious Felony. A murder, for instance, involves who did it and did the police get the right person? With a DUI we know that information. A DUI involves opinion testimony, cross examination of the officer, scientific and forensic issues regarding the breath testing, blood testing and inferences drawn from a chemical sample or refusing to provide a sample. A lawyer who handles your business matters is normally not the right person to understand all this and to protect your civil liberties. Nor is your cousin who is a DUI lawyer in Los Angeles. If you hire a private lawyer, that attorney can have you sign a 977 Waiver form that allows the attorney to appear for you without you ever having to go to court yourself. However the lawyer cannot enter a plea for you without you signing notarized forms. There is a substantial cost no matter what you do. A lawyer will cost you $2500-$10,000 with the better ones around $7500. Insurance rates will also go up and thus cost you at least that amount. If you decide to handle it yourself, or use a public defender, remember that a DMV hearing must be requested within 10 days of the arrest. A public defender cannot be appointed until you appear in court for the arraignment which is probably 2 months after your arrest. Unfortunately a public defender is not allowed

If you plan on visiting New York City this summer as well as spending time at the beach, you should know that you are ten times more likely to be bitten by a human than a shark. Did you know that male kangaroos flex their muscles to impress the female kangaroos while a group of pandas is called an embarrassment? Now you know! Seventy-five percent of all people who marry their partners from an affair eventually get a divorce while 50% of all female homicides are committed by their partner. As a side-note, more serial killers are born in November than any other month…speaking of which, James Cameron has said that he initially intended to use O.J. Simpson for the Arnold Schwarzenegger role in “Terminator” but did not think that O.J. was convincing as a killer. Boy, was he wrong! A French study found that men who like spicy food have higher testosterone levels than their cohorts who like mild food. Meanwhile, the New Hampshire State Lottery issued a scratch and sniff lottery ticket that smelled of bacon. While I’m not sure if this qualifies as red or white meat, a pound of houseflies contain more protein than a pound of beef. Anyone interested in a McFly? If that didn’t gross you out, did you know

that your mobile phone has nearly 20x the bacteria as a toilet seat while all of the bacteria in your body weighs four pounds. In closing, some have some pretty odd names. As examples, Canaan Banana was the first president of Zimbabwe, New Zealand has a resident named Angus Pattie and the 1950s produced NASCAR driver Dick Passwater. There are actually men walking amongst us named Bud Light, Phat Ho and the ever lovable Van Lullen whose Belgian name translated means ‘From Cocks’. One last thing - if you are the guy at the gym who chews on his upper denture plate like a mouth piece while working out, please stop. To have to see it pointing upwards from your mouth while you ride the recumbent bike is disturbing…and funny. And to those of you who know drivers who drive at half the speed limit in the passing lane or stop at green lights, please think seriously about helping to get them off of the road and giving up their licenses… or following driving rules…I’m good with either. to represent you at the DMV hearing because it is not considered criminal and is instead referred to as an administrative hearing ...called an Administrative Per Se (APS) hearing. This administrative hearing presumes the driver is PER SE GUILTY/Under the Influence if the DUI CHEMICAL RESULTS (PAS Test aka Preliminary Alcohol Screening or Blood test), show the driver to be .08 or higher. If you are stopped for a possible DUI, in order to try to save your California Driver’s License or driving privileges, remember you must request a DMV hearing within TEN (10) DAYS of the arrest. You should also go to DMV and pay $6 to get a copy of your DMV record (HR6). While there REQUEST A DMV IDENTIFICATION CARD. You will need some ID with a picture during this process and for travel. In California the Drunk Driving arrest is referred to as a DUI, however it is also called an Operating Under the Influence or Driving While Intoxicated in other states. It is similar to a Hurricane being called a Typhoon or Cyclone in other parts of the world. A .08 is the guideline in most states, but remember, no matter what it is called, it is not how many drinks you had but how much alcohol was in each drink. There are about 1.5 Million DUI arrests in the USA each year and here in the Coachella Valley we have more DUI deaths, per capita, than any other place in California. Thus the Indio Court is tougher on DUI’s than most other places in California.

In addition checkpoints and penalties are on the rise. The DA in Indio imposes jail time on ALL DUI’S and thus it is important you handle the matter correctly from the beginning. There are also recent Federal incentives for law enforcement to make more DUI arrests in the form of GRANT money. Lucrative overtime pay compensates the officers for going to court and DMV hearings during their off days. This money allows RSO to have checkpoints, make more arrests and clearly is an incentive for the DA pursuing these cases. The bottom is line is DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE, CALL A TAXI. IT IS A LOT CHEAPER THAN CALLING ME. One Person’s Move Is Another’s Opportunity

C

hange is tough. We all know that. But when you spend 3-5 hours every day connecting with a community through sports talk radio, there’s a certain bond that forms and having to break that bond is far more difficult than I ever thought. But it’s time for a change. After 5 years hosting sports talk radio and “Buehler’s Day Off,” I’m happy to announce that I’ve accepted a full-time position with KMIR and am excited to take a new audience on some incredible adventures.

Sports talk radio will always be a passion of mine, as there’s something organic and genuine and entirely authentic about a sports fan’s desire to tune in for the latest perspective and analysis and call in to offer their wildly unpredictable perspective and analysis. And, the fact that I have, in general, an abundance of opinion, means you can be sure I’ll be contributing to Team 1010 even beyond my departure to KMIR. But I won’t be hosting the drive-time show anymore. So, this means there’s an opportunity for someone else to live his or her dream.

The man taking the helm of “Buehler’s Day Off,” my great friend and a GREAT guy, Geoff Bloom is going to be looking for a cohost. And maybe that’s you. Maybe that’s your friend who’s been looking for a shot to get into sports media and just needs the door cracked open for them. Well, the door is swinging wide open for one lucky person who demonstrates the fire, tenacity, dedication and humor required to be a sports talk radio host (ok, the humor is highly subjective). Here’s what YOU can do: First, do you know someone that would be an amazing sports talk radio personality? Who’s that person (guy or girl) who’s always at the Beerhunter catching 12 games at

once? That person who’s always rocking their favorite team’s gear and always has an opinion about why they lost so badly last week. A sports talk radio host needs to be very knowledgeable across the landscape of sports. They don’t need to be a stat geek, but if they can recite the last 10 champions in each sport, that’d be good. Do you know a good storyteller? Someone who’s always got the exciting take on an ordinary afternoon. Sports talk radio is about connecting authentically through great storytelling and taking your listeners into a world they’d never been before. We’re not looking for someone who’s eager to please and burp out whatever mainstream sports media is chirping. We’re looking for someone who’s unique, passionate, smart and funny. And who LOVES sports. Almost to an irrational level (many would say I’m WAY past rational love for my Niners, but I have my own rationale). If you know someone, have them email me at Julie@Team1010.com. This could be their shot. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed hosting “Buehler’s Day Off” and know it will be in great hands with Bloom and his new cohost. And it’s exciting to be moving on to KMIR knowing there could be another friend in this community living their dream. Best of luck to all the applicants!

N

ow that we’re a few days into July, the dust has settled – except for the eventual return of LeBron James to the Cavaliers – on what has been a very active opening week of NBA free agency. Here are a few of the ways in which the frenzy of megamillion-dollar deals will alter the league’s landscape: 1. Long live the Spurs dynasty It’s not often the Spurs go after the biggest prizes in free agency. In 2003, they very nearly managed to lure Jason Kidd away from the Nets. This time, the Spurs got their man, convincing LaMarcus Aldridge to leave the Trail Blazers and return to his native Texas – he’s from Dallas and played in college at the University of Texas – for a four-year max contract. Because the Spurs were somehow able to convince Danny Green to take a significantly below-market contract, re-signing him for four years and $44 million, and waiting until this summer to give Kawhi Leonard his max contract instead of doing it last year, they were able to add a multiple-time All-Star in Aldridge. The Spurs only had to sacrifice a couple of role players: Tiago Splitter went to the Hawks in a trade to clear cap space, and Marco Belinelli, Cory Joseph and Aron Baynes left in free agency.

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com

San Antonio still has work left to do. The bench took further shape Monday when Manu Ginobili announced he would return for another season and veteran forward David West agreed to a join up for the veteran’s minimum. West had rejected a $12 million player option with the Pacers. It’s rare for any player to take such a drastic pay cut, and it’s a testament to West that he’s willing to do so to try to win a title. But him choosing San Antonio also is a by-product of them reloading by landing Aldridge. Their work over the last few days has planted the Spurs firmly in the middle of the title conversation (again) going into

next season and given them quite a bridge to the post-Tim Duncan Era with Leonard and Aldridge. Not a bad few days’ worth of work. 2. Mavericks get their man — did they get a star? Owner Mark Cuban and the rest of the Mavericks – led by Chandler Parsons, who was instrumental in recruiting Howard to the Rockets two summers ago – were geniuses in how they pitched DeAndre Jordan on coming to the Mavericks. Jordan craved a chance to be the man for a team, to take on a bigger responsibility than he ever was going to get with the Clippers, where Chris Paul and Blake Griffin are the unquestioned top dogs. Dallas sold Jordan on becoming the force Howard was in Orlando: surrounding him with 3-point shooters like fellow free-agent signee Wes Matthews, Parsons and Dirk Nowitzki. Therefore... 3. Clippers could be lottery-bound Jordan was a massive pickup for the Mavericks, but his loss was an even bigger deal to the Clippers, who went from being one of four or five legitimate title contenders to being a potential lottery team next season. You might scoff at that notion. The Clippers still have two of the top 15 players in the league in Paul and Griffin. Here’s the problem for the Clippers:

Griffin is the only big man they have under contract, and they have basically no way to add an impact one now. Doc Rivers deciding to sign Paul Pierce now appears to be similar to Miami signing Josh McRoberts and Danny Granger last summer, moves they hoped would appeal to LeBron James. Instead, the Clippers are down to a couple million from their mid-level exception and minimum contracts to fill out their big man rotation. Will the likes of Glen Davis, Amar’e Stoudemire and Kendrick Perkins be enough to get the Clippers into the playoffs in a loaded Western Conference? It’s hard to see. It’s a stunning fall for a team that just a couple of months ago appeared on the verge of making the Western Conference Finals, only to collapse and lose the final three games of their series to the Rockets. 4. Disturbing trend for New York and LA The Knicks and Lakers failed to land any of the big-name players available — or even any of the second-tier free agents. If a veteran such as Aldridge has the opportunity to join the Spurs, or someone such as Greg Monroe can join an up-andcoming Bucks team with a roster full of young, intriguing talent, why not go there instead? Times-they are ‘a changin’.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY Week of July 9

ARIES (March 21-April 19): How can you fulfill your potential as an Aries? What strategies will help you become the best Aries you can possibly be? Now is an excellent time to meditate on these riddles. One of my Aries readers, Mickki Langston, has some stellar tips to inspire you: 1. One of your greatest assets is your relentless sense of purpose. Treasure it. Stay connected to it. Draw on it daily. 2. Love what you love with pure conviction, because there is no escaping it. 3. Other people may believe in you, but only sometimes. That’s why you should unfailingly believe in yourself. 4. It’s your duty and your destiny to continually learn more about how to be a leader. 5. Don’t be confused by other people’s confusion. 6. Your best friend is the Fool, who will guide you to laughter and humility when you need it most, which is pretty much all of the time. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): While making a long trek through the desert on a camel, British author Somerset Maugham passed the time by reading Marcel Proust’s novel In Search of Lost Time. After finishing each page, Maugham ripped it out and cast it away. The book weighed less and less as his journey progressed. I suggest that you consider a similar approach in the coming weeks, Taurus. As you weave your way toward your next destination, shed the accessories and attachments you don’t absolutely need. Keep lightening your load. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): “I have gathered about me people who understand how to translate fear into possibility,” writes John Keene in his story “Acrobatique.” I’d love to see you do the same, Gemini. From an astrological perspective, now is a favorable time to put your worries and trepidations to work for you. You have an extraordinary capacity to use your doubt and dread to generate opportunities. Even if you go it alone, you can accomplish minor miracles, but why not dare to think even bigger? Team up with brave and resourceful allies who want to translate fear into possibility, too. CANCER (June 21-July 22): When novelist John Irving begins a new book, his first task is to write the last line of the last page. Then he writes the secondto-last line. He continues to work backwards for a while until he has a clear understanding of the way his story will end. Right now, Cancerian, as you hatch your next big phase of development, I invite you to borrow Irving’s approach. Visualize in detail the blossoms that will eventually come from the seeds you’re planting. Create a vivid picture of the life you will be living when your plans have fully ripened. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You have cosmic permission to lose your train of thought, forget about what was so seriously important, and be weirdly amused by interesting nonsense. If stress-addicts nag you to be more responsible, tell them that your astrologer has authorized you to ignore the pressing issues and wander off in the direction of nowhere in particular. Does that sound like a good plan? It does to me. For now, it’s your sovereign right to be a wise and innocent explorer with nothing much to do but wonder and daydream and play around. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Even the most provocative meme cannot literally cause the Internet to collapse from overuse. It’s true that photos of Kim Kardashian’s oiled-up butt spawned a biblical flood of agitated responses on social media. So did the cover shot of Caitlyn Jenner in Vanity Fair and the Youtube video of a tiny hamster noshing tiny burritos and the season-five finale of the TV show Game of Thrones. But none of these starbursts unleashed so much traffic that the Web was in danger of crashing. It’s too vast and robust for that to ever happen. Or is it? I’m wondering if Virgos’ current propensities for high adventure and rollicking melodrama could generate phenomena that would actually, not just metaphorically, break the Internet. To be safe, I suggest you enjoy yourself to the utmost, but not more than the utmost. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): The coming weeks will be a favorable time for you to acquire a new title. It’s

quite possible that a person in authority will confer it upon you, and that it will signify a raise in status, an increase in responsibility, or an expansion of your clout. If for some reason this upgrade doesn’t occur naturally, take matters into your own hands. Tell people to refer to you as “Your Excellency” or “Your Majesty.” Wear a name tag that says “Deputy Director of Puzzle-Solving” or “Executive VicePresident of Fanatical Balance and Insane Poise.” For once in your life, it’s OK to risk becoming a legend in your own mind. P.S. It wouldn’t be a bad time to demand a promotion -- diplomatically, of course, in the Libran spirit. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Between now and July 22, your password and mantra and battle cry is “serendipity.” To make sure you are clear about its meaning, meditate on these definitions: a knack for uncovering surprising benefits by accident; a talent for stumbling upon timely help or useful resources without searching for them. Got that? Now I’ll provide clues that should help you get the most out of your lucky breaks and blessed twists: 1. Be curious and receptive, not lackadaisical and entitled. 2. Expect the unexpected. Vow to thrive on surprises. 3. Your desires are more likely to come true if you are unattached to them coming true. But you should formulate those desires clearly and precisely. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): On behalf of the Strange Angels in Charge of Uproarious Beauty and Tricky Truths, I am pleased to present you with the award for Most Catalytic Fun-Seeker and Intriguing Game-Changer of the Zodiac. What are your specific superpowers? You’re capable of transforming rot into splendor. You have a knack for discovering secrets that have been hidden. I also suspect that your presence can generate magic laughter and activate higher expectations and wake everyone up to the interesting truths they’ve been ignoring. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “Who is that can tell me who I am?” asks King Lear in the Shakespeare play named after him. It’s a painful moment. The old boy is confused and alarmed when he speaks those words. But I’d like to borrow his question and transplant it into a very different context: your life right now. I think that you can engender inspirational results by making it an ongoing meditation. There are people in a good position to provide you with useful insights into who you are. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): What’s hard but important for you to do? What are the challenging tasks you know you should undertake because they would improve your life? The coming days will be a favorable time to make headway on these labors. You will have more power than usual to move what has been nearly impossible to move. You may be surprised by your ability to change situations that have resisted and outfoxed you in the past. I’m not saying that any of this will be smooth and easy. But I bet you will be able to summon unprecedented amounts of willpower and perseverance. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Franz Kafka produced three novels, a play, four short fiction collections, and many other stories. And yet some of his fellow writers thought he was uncomfortable in expressing himself. Bertolt Brecht said Kafka seemed perpetually afraid, as if he were being monitored by the cops for illicit thoughts. Milena Jesenská observed that Kafka often wrote like he was sitting naked in the midst of fully-clothed people. Your assignment in the coming weeks is to shed such limitations and inhibitions from your own creative expression. What would you need to do to free your imagination? To get started, visualize five pleasurable scenarios in which you feel joyful, autonomous, generous, and expansive. WHAT ARE YOU MANIFESTING?

B

e cognizant of what you manifest as it may come true. What is manifestation? It is the art of making your desires materialize. We should strive for manifesting positivity. We are constantly manifesting. As humans we create a flow of energy. This energy attracts its likeness, positive or negative. If you wake up with an unpleasant attitude you may project negative feelings from the moment you roll out of bed. Chances are you will experience less than great day. Arise with vigor and excitement regarding your day. This excitement and positive energy will manifest your reality. Can it truly be this simple? Yes. What you project is what you should expect in return. What are your desires? You possess complete power to manifest your desires, needs, and wants. You can manifest with reference to anything your heart desires. Manifest about your physical and emotional health, financial prosperity, relationships, school, work and overall success. Most of us retain ideas and thoughts looming in our minds recurrently. We have needs, desires, and wants. Nothing is wrong or shameful about your desires. So, how to do you progress from one point to the other? Setting aside ten to fifteen minutes (preferably in the morning) is exactly what you need to commence your day. Invite happiness and awareness to your meditation or time of prayer. Relinquish all negativities. Prior to manifesting be sure to clear

you space. In other words extinguish any disbeliefs you have about yourself. Project positivity and keep a few affirmations nearby to keep you in check. Your personal assignment, show up with a healthy mind. The more you clear your thoughts and energy, the more positive experiences you will attract. Not only do you need to clear your space, resolve to be clear about your desires. You must maintain clear intentions. If your thoughts are jumbled you may manifest a lot of what you do not want or need. Tap into a feeling. Feel what it is that you want. The feeling is what makes the manifestation materialize. Now, you must think it, feel it and believe it! Take your clear intention and manifest on it everyday. Let the thought inform the feeling and let the feeling take over your energy. You must believe it… then instantaneous cognizance. Be patient. Do not get anxious. Trust that timing is everything. You will be in the right place at the exact opportune time. When you feel it, you can live it. Be close to your desires, dreams and goals that you will hold it in the palm of you hand. Trust that you are in possession of all the ingredients to your delectable reward. Remain committed. Stay true to who you are as a person. Foster only healthy relationships. An Inscription Worth Remembering

T

he other day I received an email from my very wise friend LaDonna. She stated she owns a ring she wears daily inscribed with the words “siempre adelante,” which means always forward. The ring reminds my friend to “accept life’s inevitable disappointments and changes.” This is a lesson worth remembering. Immediately I created a “siempre adelante” sign and hung it on my vision board. LaDonna’s communication contained two important concepts. First, being cognizant of the fact that from time to time trouble is going to waltz through our lives totally uninvited. Life excels at keeping us on our toes. We get comfortable cruising along experiencing smooth sailing, and then a totally unexpected event occurs to churn the still waters. You know the drill. Disappointment, stress and even a bit of panic might occur when the wind blows our sails in the wrong direction. It’s normal to feel deflated like a rapidly leaking lifeboat. But then what? My advice begins with no burying your head in the sand. Spending time in denial is futile. There is a quote attributed to Elvis Presley putting setbacks in perspective. “Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain’t going way.” Accept the reality of the

situation. The fact is, it happened, it’s real and it requires a solution. Own it. Here’s another scenario to avoid. Do not let your emotions rule. Wallowing in anger and worry serves only to zap your energy reserves. Spending time doing the “poor me” moan to anyone with a listening ear is time wasted. Whatever it is, a speeding ticket, a broken relationship, a job loss, or a bad investment, take action and attack the problem. Need help on where to begin? Try rewinding a bit, and take comfort in the past. Surely you have faced downturns before and found a way to soldier on. Once you have regained your confidence, get focused and tap into your creativity. Start brainstorming a way to get back in the game. Siempre adelante is the second concept in the equation. Engage in some positive thinking. Just as you can rewind to past achievements you can fast-forward to brighter times. Take a breath and imagine your relief when you’ve solved the problem. Next, build up some momentum by putting one foot in front of the other and work your action plan. Where will that take you? In the right direction, always forward!
