I

t’s only been a few months since the grungy, punky rock trio, Labia Minora introduced themselves to the Coachella Valley music scene. Somewhat born through the pandemic, this project may be green but all three members are no strangers to performing in local bands and most of the songs they are currently performing at their shows have been honed by singer/ songwriter, guitarist and front woman, Karla Anderson who plays solo, acoustic gigs and was a founding member of The After Lashes. At some point in the not so distant past, drummer Crystal Hernandez and bassist Travis Rockwell were able to sprinkle in their unique musical perspectives on Karla’s songs and that is when the magic started to happen. I have had the pleasure of experiencing Labia Minora live twice now and to put it simply, their shows are a lot of fun. There’s a grimey, frankness that gives them an edge that is balanced out with a vibe that refuses to take them too seriously. Having started a bit of a buzz throughout the desert in recent months, Labia Minora has no lack of upcoming gigs on their schedule so I would highly recommend making the time to check them out. I recently sat down with Karla, Crystal and Travis over some cocktails and eventual karaoke where we, at some point found the time to conduct an interview. CVW: “You guys are still a brand new, baby project so there isn’t much history to talk about since I’m sure you guys are figuring out what your plans are as a band so, how did you guys get together in the first place?”

Anderson: “Sometime in 2019 I just got a wild hair up my butt and decided that I wanted to jam with some people, but I had no intentions of starting a band. So, I made a post online and someone tagged Crystal in it who I had actually seen before because she played in Fight Like a Girl and —- and I thought she was just badass. We did eventually end up jamming and she expressed that she didn’t really want to be in a band at the time but I was like, ‘I really want to be in a band with her!’ I sort of jokingly harassed her about it from time to time and eventually got my way!” Anderson continues: “It was on my birthday in 2020 during the pandemic when I decided to invite a few people over, we sat outside and I had a ten person limit, and Crystal was one of those people. Then, randomly out of nowhere Crystal said, ‘You know what? F*** it, let’s start a band.’” Hernandez: “I missed it. I had been on a break for a while but I really missed playing and performing. I needed that spark again. When you are a musician and you haven’t been doing what you love in a long ass time, your soul feels like it’s dying. You get sucked into the work, eat, sleep and repeat and you forget what used to set you free. After hanging out and jamming with Karla for a while I realized this is something that I needed to be doing for myself.” CVW: “How did the guy who is well known as a longtime member of local legends, The Hellions end up completing the trio?” Anderson: “I actually used to get together with Travis to jam occasionally and a couple of times the three of us actually got together

for the same purpose. Travis had some really cool stuff that he had written, no lyrics just riffs and stuff that I was playing around with some lyrics for but then the pandemic happened and everyone went their ways and things just sort of got put on hold. As soon as Crystal gave me the green light, I was like, ‘Let’s do it!’ and hit Travis up.” Rockwell: “I had moved up to the high desert for 10 months or so and had moved back down when they hit me up I was ready. I think that was about a year ago. We got together for pizza and started putting our heads together.” CVW: “Karla I know that you have quite the arsenal of songs under your belt that you have been performing in one form or another for years. At times solo, other times with The After Lashes and now with Labia Minora. Let’s talk about that. Anderson: “I officially started writing songs when I was 18 or 19. So yeah, I have a lot of songs. Some of them are unfinished ideas. So far, all the stuff we have been doing are all the songs that I have written. I pretty much record them myself and send them the links and tell them to do whatever they want with them and the results are what they are. We also have some really cool bass driven stuff that Travis has written that we are working out and should be ready to perform at our upcoming shows.” Rockwell: “I’m bringing in some songs that I had done originally with a band called Red Sands that is no longer a thing but I think what we are doing with them now is working out really well. It will be fun for sure.” CVW: “I’m sure that people are going to be curious about the band’s name.” Hernandez: “During High school, one of my best buddies, Juan Chavez was working for Planned Parenthood where they paid him to do sex-ed courses. Basically we were going over all of the parts of the vagina which included the labia majora and labia minora. What’s funny is that he pronounced it differently but either way I liked the way it sounded and thought to myself, “Dude! That would be a sick band name! And here we are!” You can catch Labia Minora along with The Holy Corrupt and Mother War on Sat, July 23th, 9PM at Hood Bar and Pizza in Palm Desert. LEGENDARY ROCKERS CHEAP TRICK WILL PERFORM AT FANTASY SPRINGS ON NOV. 19

I

conic band Cheap Trick will bring their massive catalog of hit songs to the Special Events Center at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19. Tickets start at $49 and go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 8 at the Fantasy Springs Box Office, via phone (800) 827-2946 and online at www.FantasySpringsResort.com. Cheap Trick are an indisputable American institution, beloved around the globe since 1974 for their instantly identifiable, hugely influential, brand of pop rock ‘n’ roll. The band – Robin Zander (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar), Tom Petersson (bass guitar), and Daxx Nielsen (drums) – are true pioneers with an unparalleled streak of certifiably classic tunes, from “California Man” and “Dream Police” to “Surrender” and “I Want You To Want Me.” 2016 saw Cheap Trick’s long-awaited induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The event honored both the band and the pioneering sound that has earned them total record sales in excess of 20 million featured appearances and more than 40 international gold and platinum certifications. Cheap Trick closed the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony with a show-stealing

performance that prompted Rolling Stone to rave, “Their smoking three-song set (was) played to perfection, with Zander hitting all the notes he hit at Budokan back in 1978.” In 2017, Cheap Trick released “We’re All Alright!” and “Christmas Christmas.” With the former album’s first single “Long Time Coming” enjoying an unprecedented run of 14 weeks at No. 1 on the Mediabase Classic Rock chart and, the album received loud applause from the press following, with Paste flat out raving, “Having been an active band for more than four decades, Cheap Trick continues to be a model of freakish consistency... Quick, think of any other American rock band formed in ‘70s who is still putting out albums in the modern era that not only don’t embarrass the band but repeatedly revitalize their career. The list starts and stops with one name: Cheap Trick. They’re not going anywhere, so you might as well start listening.” “The energy levels are astounding,” shouted Classic Rock from the UK, “with producer Julian Raymond extracting a sonic attack that makes Rick Nielsen, Robin Zander, Tom Petersson and Daxx Nielsen sound like they’ve been locked in an industrial hangar with a bunch of fireworks.”

“If 2016’s terrific “Bang Zoom Crazy… Hello” was a long-awaited comeback after a seven-year lapse, then this year’s rapid follow-up shows that was no anomaly,” declared American Songwriter. “Few acts inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as Cheap Trick deservedly was in 2016, are cranking out music as fresh, honest, energized and explosive as these guys have released in the past two years. And if this recent burst in

growing up with computers and gaming, so really enjoy being in a high-tech business that brings smiles and enjoyment to everyone I’ve seen try it. “Virtual Reality has been around for over 20 years, but within the past few years the headset technology has greatly improved. More and more high end developers have been creating games and experiences, so we are seeing more, and better quality games for VR. “VR is becoming more prevalent in the general public too, thanks to Facebook, now Meta, acquiring Oculus and really pushing their VR equipment, the ‘Quest’, and the VR message to the masses. This makes me very excited about the future of VR, as a lot of great things are happening, even though we’re still just seeing the tip of the iceberg in the VR realm.” The Arcade/Venue has 5 Virtual Reality stations as well as extra room to accommodate parties, groups, and events, and is located just minutes from downtown Palm Springs, at 905 Crossley Rd., so is easily accessible to cities in

the Coachella Valley and surrounding areas. Featuring high end virtual reality hardware and software, PRO VR USA provides a new entertainment experience for ALL ages and interests, including everything from a gentle stroll through the savannah hanging out with elephants and giraffes, swimming in the ocean with a humpback whale, exploring our world in Google Earth™ to using a bow and arrow to fend off orcs, ogres, goblins, and dragons from destroying your town, to surviving and taking out the zombie hordes. The song was the first glimpse at the band’s 20th studio album, “In Another World” which debuted at No.1 on the Billboard Rock Chart upon its release in Spring 2021, their highest first week chart placement in their long, remarkable career. The record also bowed at No.1 on the “Record Label Independent Current Albums” chart, No. 5 “Current Digital,” No. 6 “Top Current” and “Internet,” No. 7 Top Albums,” and No.10 “Digital.” To add to the excitement, the album’s single, “Light Up The Fire,” peaked at No.1 at Classic Rock Radio both Mediabase and BDS. BREAKING THE4TH WALL

1

971 was a year of yearning for change, peace and love. The U.S. was still embroiled in the Vietnam War, protesters and peace seekers filled the streets. Billy Jack, a movie about tolerance and acceptance, (accomplished through lots of violence,) was the #1 film of the year and the iconic sitcom “All in the Family,” had its television debut, bringing never before heard topics to the small screen, (such as rape, racism, religion, homosexuality, breast cancer and miscarriages.) And opening off Broadway that year was John-Michael Tebelak’s, Godspell. Originally written as his Master’s Thesis at Carnegie Mellon University, after graduation, Tebelak teamed up with mega award-winning Composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz and created a musical that became symbolic of the 1970’s culture. Schwartz, an Oscar, Grammy, Golden Globe, Tony, winning artist, composed some of the decade’s most memorable music and the music from Godspell was certainly on that list John-Michael Tebelak first named the show The Godspell, using the archaic English spelling for gospel, which means good news or good story. Before it opened offBroadway the “The” was dropped. Its central themes of forgiveness, mercy, kindness and community, really do stand the test of time, regardless of what your individual beliefs are. Opening July 8th and running through July 17th, Godspell is currently in production at

the Palm Canyon Theatre in Palm Springs. This fun musical energizes and spreads its fun magic across the stage, as a parable about the Bible’s book of St. Matthew and gives much more easily digestible, teachings of Jesus. I first discovered this gem when I was 12 years old. Our seventh-grade production of Godspell was the first play that I ever directed. (I should probably be honest in giving my teacher Miss Laszo the directing credit, but she was generous enough to let me believe that I was at the helm.). I fell in love with Schwartz’s music and still drift off in a haze of fun memories when I hear “Day by Day,” (which reached #13 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart in 1972.) Six of Godspell‘s song lyrics, including the hit “Day by Day,” and “Turn Back Oh Man,” are actually taken straight from the text of the Episcopal Hymnal. Schwartz, liked the idea of dusting the cobwebs off some of those stodgy hymns and giving them new melodies with a catchy seventies pop vibe that would leave audiences singing them, as they exited the theatre. The Palm Canyon Theatre’s Godspell cast features a young cast of absolutely stunning talent. Noah Arce as Jesus was mesmerizing. Charming and personable, it was easy to see why he was cast as the religious philosopher. Leslie Benjamin, doing her best Mary Magdalene style, really demands that all eyes are firmly on her, as she enticingly makes her

way through the audience singing, “Turn Back Oh Man,” in a sexy, sultry fashion, that rivaled Sonia Manzano, who originated the role. The ensemble also includes Jonathan Calderon, Elizabeth Eldar, Jackson Enzler, Fabrizio Ibanez, Everett Nickolopoulous, Sebastian Reda, Makayla Smith, Raul Valenzuela and Marella Sabio, who in addition to offering up a hysterical Trump, impersonation, demonstrates her incredible choreography skills in this production. Musical Director, Jaci Davis, beautifully leads the orchestra on piano, along with drummer David Bronson and Bill Saitta on Bass.

This all-ages show was once considered controversial because of its unconventional portrayal of Jesus Christ. When Godspell was first performed, it was considered by many to be shocking, because of its hippiestyle approach to Jesus and the Bible. It was deemed blasphemous. While it is still the same script and the show is most certainly filled with biblical reference and quotations, the approach has been made more contemporary and relatable under Richard Marlow’s skillful direction. Regardless of personal beliefs, Godspell is a genuinely good hearted and a feel-good show. Palm Canyon Theatre, has once more done what they do best, by presenting a talented cast, a well written classic script and a theatrical experience that will remind you of what great theatre looks like. Go and enjoy a night of pure talent. GodSpell, runs through Sunday July 17th. CONSIDER THIS

T

he Zombies, along with special guests Rooney, will be playing Pappy & Harriet’s on Thursday, July 21st. Although they were part of the British Invasion, the five-piece never achieved the superstar status afforded The Beatles, Rolling Stones or The Who. Nevertheless, along with The Animals, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, The Hollies, The Dave Clark Five, Manfred Mann and The Troggs, they were an integral part of a vibrant scene that changed the trajectory of Rock & Roll forever. Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone originally connected back in the 1961 in St. Albans, a suburb of Hertfordshire. With the addition of bassist Chris White, guitarist Paul Atkinson and drummer Hugh Grundy, they became The Zombies. They didn’t officially go professional until they entered a songwriting competition and won an opportunity to cut a demo for Decca Records. Much like The Beatles and The Beach Boys, their sound was a heady brew of buoyant melodies, melancholy lyrics and gossamer harmonies. Only The Zombies salted the mix with Classical and Jazz influences. They became best-known for recording three chart-topping hits, “She’s Not There,” “Tell Her No,” and the epochal “Time Of The Season.” Primarily a singles band, they only released two official long-players, 1965’s Begin Here (retitled The Zombies in the U.S.), and 1968’s Odessey And Oracle. Although the latter stiffed commercially upon release, in recent years it has been hailed a Psychedelic masterpiece on par with Sgt. Pepper. In fact, in 2012, it was ranked 100 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. By 1969, The Zombies had disbanded, Colin embarked on a solo career while Rod Argent and Chris White founded the band Argent. But the Zombies torch never fully extinguished. As their hits continued to play on Oldies and then Classic Rock radio formats the music influenced a plethora of younger artists and bands, everybody from Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny to The Bangles, Tom Petty, The Jam, Dave Grohl and Matthew Sweet. By the dawn of the 21st century, Rod and Colin reunited and began touring as Colin Blunstone And Rod Argent. Soon after a new iteration of The Zombies was born. Sadly, Paul Atkinson passed away in 2004, the same year the band released As Far As I Can See, their first album of new material in decades. Two more new ones followed, Breathe Out, Breathe In in 2011 and Still Got That Hunger in 2015. Two years later, the surviving members reconvened to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the recording of Odessey And Oracle. Finally, in 2019 they were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. The current line-up of The Zombies includes drummer Steve Rodford, guitarist Tom Toomey and bassist Soren Koch. They recently released a new live effort, The Zombies Live From Studio Two. It was recorded at London’s historic Abbey Road Studios. The set kicks into gear with three tracks off The Zombies’ most recent long-player, 2015’s Still Got That Hunger. “Moving On” simply crackles with authority. A Blustery Blues-Rocker powered by brawny guitars, brittle bass lines, ticklish keys and walloping big beat. Rod and Colin’s choirboy harmonies are still on point, even as time signatures shift, hugging the melody’s hairpin turns. Insistent lyrics like “I’m

THE ZOMBIES

moving on from this place of confusion, it’s goodbye to trouble I’m leaving behind/In my life no more grieving or sorrow, won’t allow the darkness my soul to define,” refuse to wallow in the mire. Rod unspools a Jazzy piano solo on the break, that is nearly eclipsed by Tom’s incendiary guitar licks. Angular and angsty, “I Want You Back Again,” was originally a single, released after their first two singles cruised to the Top 10 on both sides of the pond. Surprisingly, the single eked out a position in the Top 100. In 2015, the guys took another run at it. The live take cribs liberally from both versions. Jittery and Jazzy, modal piano runs collide with squirrely/squally guitar, sylphlike bass and a strafing beat. Rod’s demeanor is urgent and agitated as he insists he be given one more chance; “Since you have left me, I’m all alone, I need your help, I can’t stand on my own, I want you back.” Rod uncoils an elegant piano solo on the break that evokes Jazz giants like Bill Evans, Paul Desmond and Vince Guaraldi. Sleek and shiny guitars ascend locking into a labyrinthine groove. “Edge Of The Rainbow” from the same record, executes a stylistic 180 and sticks the landing. It opens with churchy keys, barbed guitars and plaintive vocals. It lands somewhere between Doo-Wop, Gospel and torchy lamentation. Lyrics speak to the same mid-life conundrum as the opening cut; “Cause into each life a little rain must fall, I just know there’s just too much in mine, you’ve got to be strong, keep movin’ on and know there’s something better waiting down the line. This one Soulful and sanctified, without ever becoming syrupy or mawkish. Within the 18song set, the band preview several songs from their upcoming album, they include the swoony “Different Game,” the piano-driven “Runaway,” the Classically-tinged “I Want To Fly,” and the heartfelt ballad “You Could Be My Love.” They also incorporate “Say You Don’t Mind” from Colin’s 1971 solo effort and Argent’s “Hold Your Head Up.” The former is anchored by sprightly electric piano, chunky power chords, looselimbed bass, jaunty handclaps and a hi-hat kick. A Bluesy shuffle, the lyrics split the difference between a desperate mea culpa and a sad-sack pity party; “Well, it gets so bad that a door mat sees better times, there’s time to get back and think up some better line, I’ve been doing some growing, but I’m scared of you going, so say you don’t mind, you don’t mind, you’ll let me off this time, you’ll let me off this time.” The latter was a surprising Top 5 hit and remains a staple on Classic Rock radio 50 years later. It’s appeal is still indelible, a timeless and anthemic head-banger (even Pearl Jam slightly reconfigured the chord changes for the chorus of their breakthrough hit, “Jeremy”). Live, The Zombies pull out all the stops. Hammond B3 is front and center, latticing atop Rod’s roaring vocals, crunchy guitars, rubbery bass lines and a four-on-the-floor thunk-a-thunk beat. The band stretches out, each member taking a turn in the spotlight, from the lengthy, ooky-spooky organ, which integrates snatches of Bach’s “Jesu, Joy Of Man’s Desiring,” to the Tom’s crisp guitar attack, Soren’s tensile bass and Steve’s thundering tribal tattoo. Clocking in at just over 12 minutes, it’s the album’s tour de force. Of course, the best songs here are their ‘60s classics, they start at the very beginning (which, as Julie Andrews and The Sound Of Music remind us, is a very good place to start). The iconic wash of Hammond B3 immediately

BY ELENI P. AUSTIN

dovetails with fuzz-crusted guitars, roiling bass lines and a whipcrack beat on “She’s Not There.” Aggrieved lyrics limn a sad-sack saga of betrayal and romantic treachery; “Well, let me tell you about the way she looked, the ways she acted the color of her hair, her voice was soft and cool, her eyes were clear and bright, but she’s not there.” The B3 simply levitates on the break, buttressed by bee-stung banshee guitars Daytripper bass lines and a blitzkrieg beat. Although “I Love You” was only a B-side to the 1965 single “Whenever You’re Ready,” it’s managed to attain classic status through the years. Slashing guitars are matched by search and destroy bass, spiky keys and a stuttery beat. Stentorian vocals belie the lyrics’ diffident demeanor; “I love you, I love you, but the words won’t come, and I don’t know what to say/If I can find the words in my mind, the words could explain, but the words won’t come, if you can see what you mean to me, my words should explain…and oh how hard I try to tell you I love you, but something holds me back when I try to tell you.” On the break rippling keys underscore this urgent, albeit inarticulate proclamation. Meanwhile, “Tell Her No” simply fizzes and pops. Staccato guitars brush up against stabbing keys, snappy bass lines and a rattle-trap beat. Lyrics offer a cautionary tale about a wanton Jezebel who is “the kind of girl who’d throw my love away, but I love her so, don’t hurt me now, don’t hurt me now/And if she should tell you ‘I love you,’ just remember she said that to me.” Finally, there are three prime cuts from their masterpiece, Odessey And Oracle. Both “Care Of Cell Block 44” and “This Will Be Our Year” are equal parts sunny and elegiac. “Care…” wraps cheerful piano chords, lithe guitar licks and sturdy bass around a tick-tock beat. The honeyed choirboy harmonies on the chorus

are majestic and bespoke. Stinging guitar riffs shadow the vocals on the bridge adding some grit to this beatific gem. Much like “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” from The Beach Boys, “This Will…” deftly blends eloquent lyrics with an effervescent melody. Cascading piano notes partner with strumming guitars, agile bass and a rock steady beat. Over the decades, it has become a popular wedding song, thanks to lyrics like “don’t let go of my hand, now darkness has gone, and this will be our year, took a long time to come, and I won’t forget the way you held me up when I was down/And I won’t forget the way you said ‘darling, I love you,’ you gave me faith to go on, now we’re there and We’ve only just begun, this will be our year, took a long time to come,” that are hopeful and tender, without being cloying or treacly. Finally, they offer up their magnum opus, “Time Of The Season.” Spectral keys are bookended by skittery guitars, sinister bass and a cantilevered beat. The opening verses are sly and seductive; “It’s the time of the season when love runs high, in this time give it to me easy, and let me try with pleasured hands/To take you to the sun, to promised lands, to show you every one, it’s the time of the season for loving.” Serpentine B3 notes slither through the mix, amping up the erotic frisson as Colin drily demands to know “What’s your name, who’s your daddy, is he rich like me, has he taken any time to show you what you need to live?” Apparently not. Other interesting tracks include the propulsive “I Want Her She Wants Me,” and brisk “Merry Go Round.” The closer reaches all the way back to the Begin Here album with “The Way I Feel Inside.” Colin’s voice soars, accompanied only by piano as he unspools this tentative and heartfelt declaration of love. It’s a poignant end to a great show. Along with The Stones and The Who, The Zombies are the only band from the British Invasion still touring and creating new music. Sixty years on, they’ve still got the goods. (The Zombies, with special guest Rooney at Pappy & Harriet’s Thursday, July 21st, 2022. 6pm Doors/8pm Show. Indoor show. All ages. pappyandharriets.com)

TWO 90s FLIX LOOK NEW AGAIN

Cimino comes this taut psychological thriller about a family hld hostage in their own home. Starring Mickey Rourke, Anthony Hopkins, Mimi Rogers and Kelly Lynch. This nail-biting action has slow spots and some confusing dialogue about the various relationships of the key players that may have teiggrred this frightening incident. In need of a hideout, escaped convict Michael Bosworth (Tporke) uses his charming smile to gain entry into the posh home of Nora and Tim Cornell (Rogers andHopkins) and their chilfren. While waiting for his beautiful Lawyerturned-accomplice (Lynch) to arrival, Bosworth’s smile soon explodes into homicidal rage when the Cornells desperately try to fight back. Holding the family at gunpoint and ruthlessly pitting husband against wife, Bosworth’s fury escalates into a shocking night of terror and cold-blooded murder. Finally the family is forced to take a

deadly stand that will either dstroy or unite tham as never before. No substantial extras but there is a standard definition behindthe-scenes festurette. MVS/visual. Blu=ray.

MIAMI BLUE (1990) SPECIAL EDITION Real Badge. Real Gun. Fake Cop. Junior Franger (Alec Baldwin) is trouble and Sgt. Hoke Mosely (Fred Ward) knows it. Junior smooth-talking, good-looking excon tiptoes on the borderline of psychotic behavior in this thriller-with-a-comic-edge. Mosely is the detective hot on his trail after Junior kills a Hare Krishna, robs a pickpocket, and then steals Mosely’s badge, his gun and then his false teeth! Junior’s running around the streets of Miami posing as a cop, assaulting people and making arrests! And even though he promises his live-in lover – an ex prostitute (a terrific Jennifer Jason Leigh) he continues playing cops and robbers on both sides of the law. Don’t miss this quirky and compelling film that was hailed by critics and audiences. Georg Armitage’s dark, hard-boiled thriller deserves a fresh (hi-def) look. Limited extras include a nice interview with Baldwin and Leigh. Recommended. MVDvisual. THE VINO VOICE

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com

BY RICK RIOZZA

BRAVO! VIVE LA TOUR!

T

he Tour de France has become regular annual coverage in this column—and rightly so. Many of us enthusiasts began our vino love affair with that bottle of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Beaujolais, and/or Loire Valley wine. As a result, we’ve always found an interest in the Tour de France in its dynamic sporting circuit that often runs along the paths of the famous vineyards. So much so, that most of us will catch the TV coverage with our favorite French wine in hand. Catching so many beautiful French countrysides, cities, rivers, valleys, forests, mountains—and famous vineyards, while watching a barrage of bike riders speed throughout, for most of us, it gets our travel bug out and itching to go! As of late, it’s been the practice of La Tour de France to begin the first few stages, of the race in another country in Europe—La Tour is indeed an international sport with 180 or so participants from all around the world. This year the La Tour began in Copenhagen. And such a connection is clear: More than a hobby and a means of transport, cycling is a way of life in Denmark. They ride to school and work; They ride to the beach and ride in their spare time. In Denmark, sometimes you’ll even find princes and prime ministers often on a bike. Nine out of 10 Danes own a bicycle; there are more bikes than people, and there are approximately 12,000km of bike routes and bike lanes across the country. They define their urban spaces and the way that they move about in cities like Copenhagen, the country’s capital. Thanks to the 673,000 bikes in the city and the fact that 44% of all trips to places of work and education are done by bicycle, it’s no wonder that Copenhagen has been named the world’s best cycling city. Further, it was a treat to watch on the screen the wonderful sights Denmark has to offer which included a sprint on one of the longest suspension bridges in the world that connects North and South Denmark. We are catching the live event (albeit DVR’d for our morning viewing) on NBC sports/ and the USA Channel. Of the seven American athletes racing, Quinn Simmons is doing a live podcast from the race—indeed as he’s racing, #ASKQUINN. Throughout the 109 years of La Tour’s three week race, the travel course has included so many of the regions of France. This year’s Tour de France highlights the eastern half of the country, totally avoiding the regions of the west. Je ne sais pas—dunno why, but the race is passing through six of the main upland or mountain areas of France. And as we drove some well-traveled La Tour routes, in the Lower Alps, from Burgundy to Nice three years ago, it brings our wonderful and scintillating trip back fresh to our minds. Euro-travelers—and no doubt travelers of any kind, find the La Tour de France coverage a true breath of fresh air. Some historic names and places: Stage 4 of the race began in France’s most northerly city: Dunkerque—or as we spell it: Dunkirk. What a treat to see the sights up there. Stage 7 is in the Ardennes; Stage 8 in the Vosges; Stage 9 in the French and Swiss Jura Mountains; and, 9 through 11 grapple with the traditional difficulties of the Alps.

12

So—as is our custom, we like to highlight some of the famous wines that are produced in the regions that La Tour de France races around and through. As mentioned above, the La Tour courses take place in the east and south of France. We’ll probably cover southern French wines next time, but for now, when you think about the eastern half of France, you’re thinking Burgundy. You loyal readers may remember our trip to Burgundy in 2019 and my follow-up article on our stay in Beaune and our tastings of Pinot Noir. When we were there, I thought about the hot weather we enjoyed and that it would reflect on the quality of the wines. Well—the 2019 vintage in Burgundy delivered stunning Pinot Noir, but unfortunately, they are selling at record prices. For you lovers and collectors of world class red Burgundy, the 2019 vintage match the 2016s, 2015s, and the 2005s as to astounding quality. For us regular folk, if you find a reasonably priced red Burgundy from any appellation—buy it and taste the nectar of the gods. Many of you enthusiasts know that when Napoleon took the Burgundy vineyards away from the Catholic Church, he divided the lots to the local families. Now fast forward 200 years—and currently, we find so many of those original vineyards have been divvied up to scattered generations of those families. The result is that the vineyards have been shrunken to minimal acreage. Rarely, do you now find family vineyards producing over 350 cases! That’s why the exorbitant prices. And now, one of the most highly rated red Burgundy wines of the vintage at 97 points: 2019 Domaine Faively Echezeaux En Orveaux. ($400 release price; around $1200 to get a bottle to Palm Springs.). First off, how about pronouncing the wine! Isn’t it fun to say Ehzhay-Zoo-ohn-Nor-voh! Anyway—only 260 cases were produced and only 15 cases were sent here to the U.S. So, chances are, I won’t be getting a sample bottle to taste. But here is the review by Wine Spectator magazine: “This red is silky, complex, and very expressive. It delivers black cherry, blackberry, sandlewood, spicy oak and mineral flavors, while the well-integrated structure lends support. The discreet oak element lingers with vanilla and toast notes.” Well—here’s a toast to La Tour de France— Bravo! & Cheers!

HAUS OF PIZZA

I

have always been curious about the small strip mall restaurant, Haus of Pizza, but the name kept me from dining there. Not exactly a beguiling advertisement of fusion cuisine. Other combinations popped into my imagination, Casa de Schnitzel or maybe Sushi Diner. After noticing a banner supporting Ukraine with proceeds from their monthly (first week) Eastern European menu I decided to shed my misgivings. Inside, I felt as if I entered a time machine and landed in my Hungarian mom’s kitchen with handmade lace tablecloths covered with plastic, overgrown plants, chachkies like nested Matryoshkas, lace wall hangings and a rolling, talking three-shelf robot server with a high Alice-in-Wonderland voice. I was hooked.

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com

Since it was not the first week of the month, we ordered a Haus special pizza with a trio of meats, mushrooms, and onions and a Haus special salad. Our robot delivered our salad (without incident) in a large clamshell container and was covered with a thick layer of grated mozzarella cheese. What happened to the lettuce? We scooped the salad onto our plates and found the missing lettuce along with minced pepperoncini, onion, olives, mushrooms, and tomatoes dressed in a perfectly balanced Italian vinaigrette. The salad was fresh, cold, and crisp. Our drinks were delivered by the owner since the robot only handles food. So, I had to ask her “What’s with the name?” The previous owners were German and Italian, so the new Ukrainian owners inherited the

name and added the Eastern European menu that includes Borsch (beet soup with sour cream garnish), Chebureki (meat filled empanadas), Chicken Kiev, Stuffed cabbage, pickled veggies and more. The robot delivered our pizza which turned out to be crispy with generous toppings. Their pizza was rated in the top three in Best of the Desert 2022 and Best Carryout in 2021. I guarantee you will have a novel experience at Haus of Pizza and be able to enjoy some excellent Italian food along with, I am positive, tasty Eastern European specialties in the first week of every month. 72-795 Hwy. 111 Palm Desert, CA 92260 (760) 340-9040 Monday – Saturday 1:00 – 8:00 p.m. Closed Sunday

his precious Shih Tzu spent the first three years of his life suffering in a small cage inside a garage in the sweltering high desert heat. Other dogs were caged above, below, and next to him. Frankie was part of an illegal large scale “backyard breeding” operation also known as a “puppy mill” where dogs are bred indiscriminately, confined to cramped spaces, frequently mistreated, and often experience untreated illnesses and death. These cruel facilities operate out of the public eye, posting cute pictures of puppies costing many thousands of dollars online. These large-scale operations ship fragile and often sick puppies across the country to unsuspecting buyers. In 2018, California banned the retail sale of dogs and cats in pet stores unless they were from rescues and shelters. Dishonest puppy store merchants then “forged” records to circumvent the

FRANKIE’S MESSAGE, DON”T ADOPT A PET ONLINE!

law, and finally additional legal efforts closed them down. The unscrupulous became more creative, hiding behind computers luring prospective adopters with cute photographs and deceiving information. How are the parent dogs treated? Frankie tells you his story, hoping to help save some of the millions of animals still suffering in these cruel operations: “My feet were sore and swollen from standing on the wire mesh of my cage in the sweltering garage. I could not turn around, and my legs cramped with pain. The stench was overwhelming, and the wail of the dogs made it difficult to sleep. Sometimes waste products from the dogs above me dropped into my cage. Some days we had no food. We never saw the sun, the moon, or the clouds. We never smelled the flowers, saw the rain, or felt the soft grass underneath our feet. We never knew a loving touch from a human.

Sometimes one of the men got angry and hit me as he shoved me back into my cage. We were removed for brief times to mate with the females who were weak from having so many puppies. In the summer, the heat was unbearable, and I smelled death coming from some of the cages. Many of the dogs were sick. My fur was so matted it felt like a painful helmet encasing my body. I was shut down and frozen from the endless suffering. One day the garage door opened! Humans in uniforms took us away, and a nice woman took me and a few of the other dogs to Loving All Animals. I went to live with Kim Bledsoe and Linda Williams who have another dog. My new sister Willow has only one eye. Willow seemed happy and wanted to play.” Linda Williams recalls, “I learned that dogs like Frankie lacked socialization and feared people because of their horrible treatment. I prayed I was up to the challenge of helping Frankie. He wouldn’t look at me in the eye, and it took me five days to get him to walk. He slept standing up with his head drooping. I pushed Frankie in a pet stroller around the neighborhood to introduce him to the world. One night Frankie had a bad dream, and I woke him up. A miracle happened when he ran to me and put his front legs around my neck and gave me a huge hug. He is still a bit timid around strangers, but he is a happy boy and always stays near me. When I’m coming home and I’m a block away, he knows it and becomes overjoyed.” During the pandemic puppy mills operating online experienced a boom in their business. Some “scam” operators require large deposits and airline fees in advance, and then no dog

BY JANET McAFEE ever arrives. They don’t care about the dogs’ welfare, as “pets for profit” is about the dollar signs. If the pet you purchased online or from a backyard breeder arrives with a medical or behavior problem, don’t expect to be compensated or have your phone calls answered. Sandy Miller, local dog trainer extraordinaire, warns, “You don’t know what problems you are getting when you adopt online. When the animals are unknown and unseen, adopters may experience the tragedy of having to put a new pet down due to extreme medical and behavior problems. The indiscriminate breeding done by these sellers can produce genetically inferior dogs when related animals mate. Many of my clients have adopted from online sellers only to have huge medical bills.” The list here of shelters and rescues can help in your search for a wonderful new pet. Rather than pay thousands of dollars for a pet, you can adopt a vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/neutered animal from shelters and rescues for a nominal cost. The Palm Springs Animal Shelter, and the Coachella Valley Animal Campus are large shelters with many adoptable animals. If you seek a specific breed and age of dog, go to www.perfinder. com and type in the breed along with your zip code for a list of dogs close to your home. Rescue dogs and cats rock! PAMPEREDPALATE

T

he Coachella Valley boasts an impressive assortment of fine dining locations and mom-and-pop shops with dishes that tantalize the tastebuds. One La Quinta restaurant will be appearing on Guy Fieri’s popular Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,”where the host takes cross-country road trips to discover America’s classic dining spots. The show’s episode, “From Chicken to Chiles,” will feature La Quinta’s Chúla Artisan Eatery, owned by local chef Katherine Gonzalez, on Friday, July 15, at 9 p.m. EDT and then again on Saturday, July 16, at 12 a.m. EDT. Known for Gonzalez’s preparation of some of her mom’s traditional dishes made with the chef’s own creative spin, Chúla is dedicated to honoring its family’s culture and highlighting the products of nearby growers. Chúla’s Mom’s Chilaquiles will be Fieri’s highlighted dish, made with red or green sauce, sauteed house-made corn chips, pulled pork, chicken or vegetables, sweet onion, queso fresco, a poached egg, avocado, onion jam and micro greens. Having opened in December of 2017, Chúla was founded on Gonzalez’s upbringing in Southern Arizona, and inspired by her

mother’s family from Chihuahua, Mexico, and her father’s family from Spain. She grew up enjoying Mexican-inspired comfort food and an appreciation for celebrating homemade food with friends and family. “The name ‘Chúla,’ which means ‘beautiful’ in the Hispanic culture, is special to me because that is what my mom used to call me and that is what I call my daughter now. Other customers come in and say they have relatives or pets with that name as well, so it is an endearing term that brings a lot of people together,” shared Katherine. Katherine also had experience catering throughout California and selling homemade salsa and tamales, but longed to have a place where she could combine the fresh ingredients of a farmers market and locally grown inventory. Katherine opened Chúla with a commitment to creating more community and supporting local vendors, and her restaurant features many local brands and growers for her menu items. “We don’t just open up a can and serve; that’s never been my calling. We make everything from scratch. Our tamales, red chili sauce—everything is handmade in a very labor-intensive process, but we know

that it will taste better that way. Cooking is not heating something up and putting it on a plate. Customers can also tell the difference,” said Katherine. Katherine had the privilege of growing up with her mother’s home cooking, recalling how frequently she would be served the same Chilaquiles recipe that Guy Fieri tasted during the filming of the “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” episode. “We would have Chilaquiles with egg for breakfast sometimes when I was young, and I remember questioning why I couldn’t have Froot Loops or sugary cereal like my other friends ate for breakfast. Now looking back, I can’t believe that I didn’t appreciate the beautiful homemade food I was being served every day,” recalled Katherine. The field producer of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” had reached out to Katherine initially, revealing that they had picked twelve restaurants in the Coachella Valley to feature on the show and were narrowing down their selections to six. Representatives of the show looked at the Chúla backstory, menu, website, and Yelp reviews, and revealed to Katherine that her restaurant had made it to the final six. There were nine items from the menu that the Chúla team prepared on camera in front of the filming crew. The episode was filmed over the course of two straight days. Katherine recounts how Guy came in early in the morning on the second day of shooting to talk to customers. “I was really nervous about meeting Guy. He’s a classically trained chef and I’m not. But

BY CRYSTAL HARRELL

he came in with this really jolly, funny, and open persona that put everyone at ease. It was great being able to work side by side with him,” said Katherine. Katherine made two dishes from scratch in front of Guy. The first one was the pulled pork red chili Chilaquiles. Guy ended up loving it and eating the whole dish. The second item was the green chili bacon Monte Cristo, which consists of a large, beer-battered, deep-fried tortilla. “It’s this rich, deep-fired quesadilla with bacon and chili, and we pair it with a house jam to give that sweet and salty character to it. Guy didn’t even know what to say when he ate it. After he tried our dishes, I fully believed in our product and knew it was good,” stated Katherine. As for future plans, Katherine reveals that she will be opening a second restaurant, Chúlita, which will open in Indian Wells in the fall. Chúlita will serve breakfast, lunch, and early dinner. Katherine reveals that Chúlita will pay more tribute to her Spanish roots on her father’s side, incorporating a Mediterranean experience and significant wine selection. Katherine anticipates a late October/early November opening. Chúla is open every day this summer for breakfast and brunch until 2:30 p.m. with exception to Sunday, closing at 2 p.m. Chúla also features a café and bakery that offers catering, workshops, special events and private dinners. ABCS OF 401KS

M

any of us take for granted that everyone knows what a 401k retirement account is. Only one in three people have a 401k while only six in ten have access to one. A 401k retirement account is a way to save money for retirement, a life event or emergency. This can be done as part of a company 401k plan or via an Individual Retirement Account if your employer does not have a program. Many employers match some percentage of the salary that you contribute to your 401k. By simply saving some salary, these employees get a raise. By saving just $5 per day Monday through Friday ($100 per month), you get a commensurate raise. Over thirty years, $200 per month results in $300,000 in savings assuming an 8% return. The main thing to remember is that you only get this raise if you can set something aside each paycheck. A 401k also serves as a nice safety net in the event of an emergency or life event. For example, if you have $10,000 in your account, you can borrow half of these funds for a shortterm need. While you can take up to 5 years to repay the loan, you should think of that need as one that can repay within a year. We say this as most people tend to overestimate their ability to repay. It is better than to be cautious when borrowing. The best reason to borrow against your 401k is to buy a home. This is a great way to access money in afford to the down payment. The key thing to remember is that you need to be able to repay the loan in 40 payments over 10 years. Borrowing for any other

purpose must be paid back over no more than five years. If you cannot repay, the loan is considered an early withdrawal. Anyone making a withdrawal before the age of 59 ½ is considered early. Let’s say you made an early withdrawal on $1,000. You are hit with a $100 penalty. Additionally, you must treat the other $900 as earnings. Remember that money in your 401k is contributed before taxes. The IRS has not taxed these funds like the rest that you have received in your paycheck. As a result, Uncle Sam wants his cut. If your tax rate is 20%, that means you owe another $200. The $1,000 early withdrawal results in $300 in taxes and penalties. You can avoid the penalties if the

DALEGRIBOW ON THELAW

withdrawal is considered a hardship. You will still owe the taxes, but you will not be assessed a 10% penalty. Hardships include medical expenses for you or your family, education like college or a trade school, home payment to avoid eviction, or funeral expenses. As you can see, your 401k is meant for retirement but can also be important for an emergency or important opportunity like a home purchase or higher education. While we have been talking about 401k plans that save your money before Uncle Sam takes his piece, we can also save money after Uncle Sam takes his cut. The reason that you would do this is that the IRS offers a future benefit to those who pay their taxes now. The benefit is that you never have to pay any

taxes on the growth of that money ever again. With a regular 401k, you delay taxes until you take the money out while with a Roth, you paid your taxes upfront. People who should use Roth accounts are those who pay very low tax rates today. By the way, you can save up to $6,000 in a Roth account per year or $7,000 if you are over 50 years of age. In a 401k, you can save $19,500 annually if you are under 50 and $26,000 if you are over 50. Uncle Sam is willing to give only so much of a long-term tax break. For those owning businesses, solo 401ks can save even more. We will save that discussion for a future article. LEGAL REPRESENTATION OF THE INJURED & CRIMINALLY ACCUSED

DID YOU ENCOUNTER A JULY 4TH CHECKPOINT?

I

F YOU DON’T BELIEVE THEY WILL BE OUT AT HOLIDAYS, THEN LEAVE THE LIGHTS ON FOR JIMMY HOFFA…and if you don’t know who Jimmy Hoffa was, look him up in the dictionary…UNDER CEMENT! You can bet your “bippy” there will be Checkpoints for all holidays, and throughout 2022! Most of us are bored with the Covid Hibernation restrictions, and thus drink to feel better. Then after drinking, the alcohol contributes to the use of bad judgement. The impaired person gets in the car to go to McDonalds or for a pizza… and you know the rest of the story. Of course, DUI sobriety checkpoints are legal in 2022, and they are not a 4th Amendment illegal search and seizure violation… if the DUI Checkpoint complies with all the regulatory rules. Turning onto a side street or turning around before passing through a checkpoint is generally not against the law. Your turning around should not, in and of itself, give the police a reasonable suspicion to make a DUI stop. However, the RSO officer may be able to stop you if he observes any driving that would be sufficient for reasonable suspicion. Thus, slow or erratic driving, straddling the line or making an illegal turn could attract the officer’s attention, and he then could stop

your car. Of course s/he could also make up Probable Cause. To deter holiday drinking, Checkpoints are implemented to meet the increased number of people who will be drinking and driving. A word of advice, Use a Taxi, Uber or Lyft. They are a lot cheaper than getting arrested or being in an accident and having to call me the next morning. The most important thing to know, is that if you are stopped you should be as polite as possible. The single most important thing to remember is what is listed in my admonition below, about giving the card to the officer. If you show you are happy to comply with anything the officer wants, but you first want to get authority from your lawyer, then you will look like the good guy and the lawyer is the bad person. That happens with my clients daily. Of course, the police are not going to call me or any other lawyer. However it will not look like you are avoiding the police, but rather that you are following your lawyer’s orders. Few in the Coachella Valley realize we have more DUI FATALITIES…per capita, than anywhere else in California. That makes DUI Checkpoints and Saturation Patrols essential to save lives of the drivers …and ours. A saturation patrol is a large number

of law enforcement officers making their presence known by conducting stops, targeting inebriated, distracted, aggressive and speeding drivers, as well as those with seatbelt or cell phone violations….the whole nine yards of traffic violations. Remember: Silence is Golden and Handcuffs are Silver so DON’T TALK to POLICE without your lawyer’s permission. DON’T TALK WITH ANYONE ABOUT AN ACCIDENT OR CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION WITHOUT YOUR ATTORNEY’S PERMISSION.

IT IS OFTEN NOT WHAT YOU SAY BUT WHAT THEY THOUGHT YOU SAID. Though often referred to as a DUI criminal defense lawyer, I choose to not view my DUI clients as “criminals”. I prefer to view them, and more importantly to treat them, as good, honest people that have found themselves in a scary and unfortunate situation after screwing up. I look upon my job as protecting the Constitutional Rights of every American who drinks, drives and gets arrested for a DUI or has an ACCIDENT. I do however “Change Hats” when I SUE Drunk Drivers for damages to my Injured or Deceased (Wrongful Death) clients. SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE ARTICLE? SAFETY TIPS

KEEPING AN EYE ON YOU – JULY IS hen UVyouAWARENESS MONTH! “ wake up in the morning

W

and the light is hurt your head — The first thing you do when you get up out of bed — Is hit that streets a-runnin’ and try to beat the masses — Now go get yourself some good sunglasses” – ZZ Top Listen while you read: https://lnkd.in/ g8ZWAqF During the summer we put a lot of emphasis on protecting skin from UV rays and it is important. But we cannot forget about protecting the eyes — the most exposure to bright sunlight increases the risk of developing these four conditions: cataracts, macular degeneration, growths on the eye and cancer. On the job eye protection is not just for work, it is even during our day-to-day activities. July is UV safety awareness month. However, eyes are at risk to UV rays all year round. Here are some tips from the American Academy of Ophthalmology: Check for 100 percent UV protection: Make sure your sunglasses block 100 percent of UV-A rays and UV-B rays. Choose wrap-around styles. Ideally, your sunglasses should wrap all the way around to your temples, so the sun’s rays cannot enter from the side. Wear a hat. In addition to your sunglasses, wear a broad-brimmed hat to protect your

18

eyes. Do not be fooled by clouds. The sun’s rays can pass through haze and thin clouds. Sun damage to eyes can occur anytime during the year, not just in the summertime. Protect your eyes during peak sun times. Sunglasses should be worn whenever outside, and it is especially important to wear sunglasses in the early afternoon and at higher altitudes, where UV light is more intense. Never look directly at the sun. Looking directly at the sun at any time, including during an eclipse, can lead to solar retinopathy, damage to the eye’s retina from solar radiation. Speaking of eyes, let us not forget that August is Cataract Awareness Month: https:// lnkd.in/gyNkXpQ.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): With a fanciful flourish, Aries poet Seamus Heaney wrote, “I ate the day / Deliberately, that its tang / Might quicken me all into verb, pure verb.” I’d love for you to be a pure verb for a while, Aries. Doing so would put you in robust rapport with astrological rhythms. As a pure verb, you’ll never be static. Flowing and transformation will be your specialties. A steady stream of fresh inspiration and new meanings will come your way. You already have an abundance of raw potential for living like a verb—more than all the other signs of the zodiac. And in the coming weeks, your aptitude for that fluidic state will be even stronger than usual. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): According to Arthurian myth, the Holy Grail is a cup that confers magical powers. Among them are eternal youth, miraculous healing, the restoration of hope, the resurrection of the dead, and an unending supply of healthy and delicious food and drink. Did the Grail ever exist as a material object? Some believe so. After 34 years of research, historian David Adkins thinks he’s close to finding it. He says it’s buried beneath an old house in Burton-on-Trent, a town in central England. I propose we make this tantalizing prospect your metaphor of power during the coming weeks. Why? I suspect there’s a chance you will discover a treasure or precious source of vitality. It may be partially hidden in plain sight or barely disguised in a mundane setting. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): I’m pleased to authorize you to be extra vast and extensive in the coming weeks. Like Gemini poet Walt Whitman, you should never apologize and always be proud of the fact that you contain multitudes. Your multivalent, wide-ranging outlook will be an asset, not a liability. We should all thank you for being a grand compendium of different selves. Your versatility and elasticity will enhance the wellbeing of all of us whose lives you touch. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Your memory is SUBSTANTIAL. Your sensitivity is MONUMENTAL. Your urge to nurture is DEEP. Your complexity is EPIC. Your feelings are BOTTOMLESS. Your imagination is PRODIGIOUS. Because of all these aptitudes and capacities, you are TOO MUCH for some people. Not everyone can handle your intricate and sometimes puzzling BEAUTY. But there are enough folks out there who do appreciate and thrive on your gifts. In the coming weeks and months, make it your quest to focus your urge to merge on them. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): I love these lines by Leo poet Conrad Aiken: “Remember (when time comes) how chaos died to shape the shining leaf.” I hope this lyrical thought will help you understand the transformation you’re going through. The time has come for some of your chaos to expire—and in doing so, generate your personal equivalent of shining leaves. Can you imagine what the process would look and feel like? How might it unfold? Your homework is to ponder these wonders. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): A British woman named Andie Holman calls herself the Scar Queen. She says, “Tight scar tissue creates pain, impacts mobility, affects your posture, and usually looks bad.” Her specialty is to diminish the limiting effects of scars, restoring flexibility and decreasing aches. Of course, she works with actual physical wounds, not the psychological kind. I wish I could refer you to healers who would help you with the latter, Virgo. Do you know any? If not, seek one out. The good news is that you now have more personal power than usual to recover from your old traumas and diminish your scars. I urge you to make such work a priority in the coming weeks. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Ancient Roman philosopher Seneca wrote, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” But a Spanish proverb suggests a different element may be necessary: “Good luck comes by elbowing.” (Elbowing refers to the gesture you use as you push your way through a crowd, nudging people away from the path you want to take.) A Danish proverb says that preparation and elbowing aren’t

enough: “Luck will carry someone across the brook if they are not too lazy to leap.” Modern author Wendy Walker has the last word: “Fortune adores audacity.” I hope I’ve inspired you to be alert to the possibility that extra luck is now available to you. And I hope I’ve convinced you to be audacious, energetic, well-prepared, and willing to engage in elbowing. Take maximum advantage of this opportunity. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Many Scorpios imagine sex to be a magnificent devotion, a quintessential mode of worship, an unparalleled celebration of sacred earthiness. I endorse and admire this perspective. If our culture had more of it, the art and entertainment industries would offer far less of the demeaning, superficial versions of sexuality that are so rampant. Here’s another thing I love about Scorpios: So many of you grasp the value of sublimating lust into other fun and constructive accomplishments. You’re skilled at channeling your high-powered libido into practical actions that may have no apparent erotic element. The coming weeks will be an excellent time for you to do a lot of that. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): A Sagittarius reader named Jenny-Sue asked, “What are actions I could take to make my life more magical?” I’m glad she asked. The coming weeks will be a favorable time to raise your delight and enchantment levels, to bask in the blessed glories of alluring mysteries and uncanny synchronicities. Here are a few tips: 1. Learn the moon’s phases and keep track of them. 2. Acquire a new sacred treasure and keep it under your pillow or in your bed. 3. Before sleep, ask your deep mind to provide you with dreams that help generate creative answers to a specific question. 4. Go on walks at night or at dawn. 5. Compose a wild or funny prayer and shout it aloud it as you run through a field. 6. Sing a soulful song to yourself as you gaze into a mirror. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Being able to receive love doesn’t come easy for some Capricorns. You may also not be adept at making yourself fully available for gifts and blessings. But you can learn these things. You can practice. With enough mindful attention, you might eventually become skilled at the art of getting a lot of what you need and knowing what to do with it. And I believe the coming weeks will be a marvelous time to increase your mastery. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “If I don’t practice one day, I know it; two days, the critics know it; three days, the public knows it.” This quote is variously attributed to violinist Jascha Heifetz, trumpeter Louis Armstrong, and violinist Isaac Stern. It’s a fundamental principle for everyone who wants to get skilled at any task, not just for musicians. To become a master of what you love to do, you must work on it with extreme regularity. This is always true, of course. But according to my astrological analysis, it will be even more intensely true and desirable for you during the coming months. Life is inviting you to raise your expertise to a higher level. I hope you’ll respond! PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): In May 2021, Jessica and Ben Laws got married on their dairy farm. The ceremony unfolded smoothly, but an unforeseen event interrupted the reception party. A friend who had been monitoring their herd came to tell the happy couple that their pregnant cow had gone into labor and was experiencing difficulties. Jessica ran to the barn and plunged into active assistance, still clad in her lovely floorlength bridal gown and silver tiara. The dress got muddy and trashed, but the birth was successful. The new bride had no regrets. I propose making her your role model for now. Put practicality over idealism. Opt for raw and gritty necessities instead of neat formalities. Serve what’s soulful, even if it’s messy. Homework: Ask a friend or loved one to tell you a good secret.
