CVW: “You guys have been in some transitions as a band over the past decade, starting as Burning Bettie and then Hollace and now HOVER which I know you started a few years back. What’s been the transition to your current lineup?”
CVW: “I remember you guys opened Sound Hub several years ago. How’s that going?”Michel: “Things are going great! It’s where we produce and engineer most of our music. Our studio specializes in analog recording production and is open to the public. www.soundhub760.com
AUGUST 20TH THE HOOD BAR AND PIZZA
LOCAL MUSIC
CVW: “As a band, what were you guys up to during the shutdown?” Michel: We released our self-titled album last April, (which is out on all major streaming platforms & CD) so production kept us busy. At the same time, Covid led to James moving away to Sacramento where he is currently living and Bahrum moving out of state. We’ve stayed in constant communication and kept sharing ideas for new music. It was definitely a new challenge for us that we overcame. Bahrum eventually moved back last December.”
CVW: “What is in store for Hover in the nearMichel:future?”“We are excited to get back out playing and have back to back shows coming August 19th and 20th. The 19th is at The Desert Fox in Palm Desert and The 20th is at The Hood Bar & Pizza along with Jetta King. Thanks to CV Weekly for hosting these shows! Another music video is already being planned out for our next single release in the coming months. We are also planning an EP release for early next year which has already been recorded and is being edited/mixed as we speak. We are planning future shows when we can have James available for us. We will also continue constantly creating and releasing new music and videos.”

Well respected by fans and fellow musicians alike, HOVER consists of some core guys that have been making their mark as rockers in the desert music scene for the better part of a decade. With Frank Michel on lead vocals/ guitar, James Hollis Eaton on guitar/vocals, Shawn “Stretch” Fisher on bass and Bahrum Moghadam on drums/vocals these have a plethora of talent and creativity to bring to the stage so, after not performing as a band since 2019, they are champing at the bit to show us what they’ve been up to.
August 18 to August 24, 2022 www.coachellavalleyweekly.com 6 HOVER VIDEO RELEASE PARTY
CVW: “Let’s talk about the video itself. Shooting it, how you came up with the concepts, etc.” Michel: “We worked with Paul Teel who filmed and directed the video for our upcoming single, “Boomerang.” He was amazing to work with and very creative. He is an old friend of Bahrum’s and that is how the connection was made. We initially had our own idea of how this video would be shot and that it would be outside. We had a location, date and time set. When the day came, there was a giant wind storm that stopped our idea in its tracks! We couldn’t believe it and what made things even more stressful was that James had come from Sacramento for the video shoot! Paul really came through and started suggesting ideas, immediately insisting we had to get something done since we were all gathered together. It made sense that we ended up shooting in our base of operations, The Sound Hub!” Michel continues: “We weren’t sure that it would work out but, Paul showed us some initial shots and had us pretty convinced it would all be ok. In the end, we all feel it came out pretty amazing with his creative direction, editing and production. People can reach out to Paul for their video projects as well.” www. paulteelproductions.com
Michel: “James, Stretch and I have been playing together now for nearly a decade. We have a tight brotherhood full of experiences that has made us the most solid we’ve ever been. I have known Bahrum since 2005 when we met at Riverside City College in their music program and we both graduated from there with music performance degrees. Over the years, we worked on various music/studio projects together and things have come full circle now with him in the band.”
Michel continues: “Coming off our previous project, Hollace, we went through a couple of drummers that just didn’t work out. During that time, Bahrum did us a favor and came to The Sound Hub to track drums on our self-titled album ‘HOVER.’ We instantly loved his playing and attitude, and wanted him in the band, but he was not available at that time. Somehow, things just worked out as time went on and eventually he joined us. He also brought a lot of studio experience and knowledge along with his musicianship. Bahrum was actually running his own recording studio in Orange County prior to the Covid shutdowns. This has helped make The Sound Hub what it is today.”

Five beardy dudes from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan are singlehandedly bringing back the swampy, swaggering sound of Southern-fried Boogie Rock. By threading sunny Psychedelia, bar band Blues and hardwired Honky-Tonk harmonies they’ve created a rich musical tapestry that’s impossible to resist.Thecore of the Sheepdogs, Ewan Currie (lead vocals, guitars, alto saxophone, synthesizer and percussion), Ryan Gullen (bass, backing vocals) and Sam Corbett (drums, backing vocals, percussion and tenor saxophone) came together in the early aughts as The Brakes. Initially, they hunkered down in Sam’s parents’ basement, mastering a surfeit of Classic Rock songs and filtering in newer tracks from The Black Keys and Kings Of Leon. Pretty soon, they began concentrating on writing original music. Their debut EP arrived in 2006, but once they added guitarist Leot Hanson to the mix, the newly minted four-piece became TheTheirSheepdogs.self-released long-player, Trying To Grow, was released soon after. In between non-stop touring, the band recorded albums at a quick clip. 2008’s Big Stand was followed by 2010’s Learn & Burn. Each record offered up a heady brew of Swamp Rock, Jazz, Blues Country, Blues, Southern Boogie and Bluegrass. Critical and commercial success was immediate in their home country. In fact, Learn… netted them three Juno Awards (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy). Although they’d already circumnavigated the globe, even opening for John Fogerty in Australia, America proved a tougher nut to crack. But they got a leg-up when they entered a Rolling Stone contest called Choose The Cover. Competing against 15 bands, they won, and they became the first unsigned band to grace the front of the venerable magazine. A performance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon led to appearances at the Osheaga and Bonnaroo festivals. An introduction to Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney followed. He produced their self-titled 2012 album and it hit #1 on the Canadian charts. A couple of years later, Leot left the band and opened a bar/concert venue in Saskatoon. Rusty Maytas took his place for 2015’s Future Nostalgia album and subsequent tour. Not long after, Ewan’s brother Shamus was added to the lineup, providing keys, percussion and trombone. Virtuoso guitarist Jim Bowskill added some extra muscle on tour and became a full-fledged Sheepdog when Rusty left the band. The fivepiece returned to the studio to record their sixth record, Changing Colours. The next year, The Rival Sons invited the band to open their 2019 tour. Sons’ fans immediately embraced their sunshiny songs and shaggily precise guitarmony, raising their profile exponentially in America. Somehow, Ewan found time to release a solo album in 2019, and 2021 saw the release of the No Simple Thing EP. Of course, thanks to the pandemic, the band weren’t able to road-test new material on tour. Bored and frustrated during this enforced vacation, they set up their gear inside Toronto’s Taurus Recording Studio, ran through the new stuff, and as soon as it sounded good, they’d have the engineer hit record. The result is their seventh long-player, Outta Sight. The album’s opening three tracks hurtle out of the speakers with a muscular agility. If Boston and B.T.O. ever conceived a musical love child, it might sound like “Here I Am.” Greazy guitar licks, swirly keys and rock-ribbed bass are wed to a pummeling backbeat. Honeyed harmonies sync-up on the chorus, which provides a cheerful introduction of sorts; “Here I am with the band, sing it loud, that’s the plan, making noise with the fam, would someone please give me a hand?” Shang-a-lang guitars sidle between each verse, shaded by percolating electric piano. By the break, a scuzzy guitar solo erupts, supplanted by soaring AOR guitars. One more joyous chorus and the arrangement stops on aLyrically, dime. “Find The Truth” offers a bit of sin and salvation, Musically, choogling guitars collide with slippery bass lines, swivel-hipped keys and a pile-driving beat. Ewan’s stentorian tenor is nearly elbowed aside by the threepronged guitar attack that charges across the arrangement, damn the torpedoes, full-speed ahead. Following the insistent bridge, a stinging and stratospheric guitar salvo is launched, enveloping the final two choruses before windingMeanwhile, down. if there were still such a thing as AM Pop radio, “I Wanna Know You” would sandwich comfortably between Argent’s “Hold Your Head Up,” Deep Purple’s “My Woman From Tokyo, the Eagles’ “Witchy Woman” and Foreigner’s “Feels Like The First Time.” Growly guitars partner with breezy keys, blustery bass, a walloping beat and stacked, Soulful vocals. There’s a Countrified lilt to Ewan’s lead vocal as he offers up a Springsteen-esque invitation; “Only a fool would try and slow me down, but don’t you dare spin me round, let’s gas her up and we’ll blow this town/Find a place we can’t be found, no secret stars around, feet marching on the ground, so tired of being locked down.” gritty, gut-bucket guitars spiral skyward on the break. The action slows on a couple tracks, “Mama Was A Gardener” and “Didn’t I.” The former was written by Shamus Currie, who also handles lead vocals. Mellow, meandering and slightly melancholy, the melody hinges on twin Eeyore-centric guitars, warm organ colors, sidewinding bass and a thunking beat. As he tills the soil of a fallow relationship, he seeks some a little guidance from his folks; “My Mama was a gardener, she tried to heal the land, my father was a thinking man, you know he played in the band, and the son they raised is gonna need a helping hand, to reach a place where he can understand.” Taut, concentric guitar notes, sanctified whoa-whoas and emphatic handclaps swing the song to a close. Spectral and serpentine, the latter delivers a mixed message; Labyrinthine logic like “Didn’t I tell you I’d be home? Didn’t I tell you to leave me alone? Didn’t I tell you how to be wrong? Didn’t I tell you it’s in my song?” is cloaked in shimmery guitars, spacey keys and a congariffic beat. Ewan’s vocal inflections shapeshift from menacing to seductive with each neatlyturned phrase. The arrangement follows suit as phantasmagoric guitars ebb and flow atop chimerical keys on the break. The best songs here add some new colors to The Sheepdogs’ sonic palette. Take “Goddamn Money,” a tough-minded diatribe on the evils of filthy lucre. It has all the earmarks of becoming an instant classic. Slashing, sludge-y guitar chords ride roughshod over nimble bass lines, woozy keys, insistent piano and a chunky, percussive tattoo. The shout-it-out chorus; “Goddamn, it’s the Son Of Sam, spending all my time working for the man, I need some money, cheap thrills, well, I shoot to kill, emptied out my pockets just to pay the bills, I need some money,” is the perfect anthem for these cashstrapped times. “Scarborough Street Fight” is the album’s magnum opus. A cogent blend of urban outlaw poetry, brawling guitars, hoodoo-voodoo keys, tensile bass lines and a blitzkrieg beat. Ewan’s terse reportage; “Hard living, god-fearing, out on the streets, car stealing, raw dealing, nothing’s ever free, Scarborough street fight, lord these feuds are deep,” is matched by strafing, staccato riff-age. A spiky, yowling guitar solo is untethered on the first break, bookended by the metallic crunch of the rhythm guitars. This veritable guitar army achieves harmonic convergence just before Ewan drops back in to see what condition his condition is in. The final break accelerates around the bend, building to a stunning crescendo, as surging organ runs intertwine with a wah-wah throb, filigreed electric licks and rippling rhythm notes. Finally, “So Far Gone,” executes a flawless bait and switch. Incongruous synth drums (that would seem more at home on a Berlin or Kajagoogoo song), are mercifully subsumed by a fuzz-crusted Country-Blues groove. Ricocheting guitar riffs sally forth atop stuttery bass lines, a bang-a-gong beat and a tambourine shake. Barely through the first chorus, turbo-charged guitars, equal parts modal and distorto, hijack the arrangement, stacking strutting power chords back-to-back. It’s the Saskatoon equivalent of the Quiet-Loud dynamic that The Pixies pioneered and Nirvana perfected. Other interesting tracks include the anthemic Honky-Tonk of “Carrying On” and the ticklish nocturnal assignation of “Waiting For Your Call.” The album closes with the filigreed hoedown of “Roughrider ’89.” Sinewy guitars line up with flinty keys, angular bass and a chugging beat. Lyrics examine the pro et contra that accompanies the life of a touring musician; “Time to go, I never unpacked my suitcase, and I slept in my clothes/Back on the road, leaving is hell and heaven, no place like home.” On the break, the song locks into a skip-to-mylou/Hee-Haw groove before downshifting into a Psychedelic vortex and then crossing the Rubicon on the back of a four-on-the-floor beat. It’s an ambitious finish to a great record. This record is fun front to back. Playful, lean and unfussy, it combines Monster hooks, slow-cooked Soul, rambunctious SouthernBoogie, ballsy arrangements, in-the-pocket harmonies and crisp instrumentation. If you’re old enough to recall your ‘70s slang, you know the term “outta sight,” indicates something is cool, the best, excellent, even stellar. The Urban Dictionary insists that it’s “the cooler way to say ‘far out.’” That perfectly describes the shaggy, symbiotic synchronicity that is the Sheepdogs’ latest album.

THE LOST CITY Co-produced, directed and written by Adam and Anthony Nee. My advice to the Nee Boys is to get some life experience under their collective belt and stop shamelessly lifting themes, scenes plots and premises from previous popular films like “Romancing the Stone,” “African Queen,” “Tomb Raider and “Lost City of Z” among others. In the set-up to the overly familiar plot, we meet introverted loner author Loretta Sage (a perfectly cast Sandra Bullock) who writes about exotic places in her popular romance adventure novels that feature “Dash” -- who is pictured on the covers -- as posed by a handsome but thickheaded Fabio-like cover deadly jungle and each other and find the Lost City’s treasure before it’s lost for eternity!

Okay—for the last time: they say, “If Paris is France’s head, and Champagne is her soul, then for certain, Burgundy is her stomach.” So many French staples come from around Dijon: There’s Coq au Vin, the chicken and wine stew that everyone knows; Soupe à l’Oignon, the well-known onion soup, with slices of baguette and melted Saint-Nectaire cheese; Boeuf Bourguignon, the classic braised beef stew. And don’t forget Les Escargots de Bourgogne—Burgundy snails whose taste and texture resemble those of clams with an earthiness reminiscent of mushrooms. For the most part, however, the snail takes on the flavor of the butter or sauce with which it is cooked. Alors!—mais oui! Between the three famous Burgundian cities of Lyon, Beaune, and Dijon, there are 35 Michelin Star Restaurants serving some of the best meals in the world! Bon Appétit! And now—our Red Burgundy wine of the week: The 2015 Domaine Leroy Musigny Grand Cru ($40,000). “This is a magical Pinot Noir wine with cherry, raspberry, rose, and spice aromas. This natural wine offers a multidimensional palate with satiny tannins and a penetrating finish.” Alors!—magical and penetrating indeed!

MORE WINE THAN MUSTARD IN DIJON
“Dijon is as concentrated as Maison Maille’s famous mustards. This extensive rejuvenation has liberated the centre and given justice to a mostly late-Renaissance architecture worthy of the capital of a dukedom that once spread from Lyons to the Hague. “Best appreciated on a balmy spring or autumnal evening, Dijon’s centre is a mass of Gothic churches and vast patrician mansions built in Dijon’s heyday of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. If, after 20 years’ living here, I detect one over-riding sentiment that defines Dijon, it is a calm, contented discretion. Such is Dijon’s conservative charm you might feel it is smug, but ceaseless investment has pulled Dijon into the twentyfirstThiscentury.upward movement is to be crowned by the imminent opening of Dijon’s Cité Internaltionale de la Gastronomie et du Vin beating out the competition from the likes of Lyons, Tours and Rungis (the site of Paris’s enormous wholesale food market). Dijon was selected in 2012 with a mission to celebrate the idea (or is that ideal?) of ‘French eating and Burgundy’s vineyards and terroir’; both are inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. This univers gastronomique hosts a plethora of restaurants, wine bars, foodierelated shops and wine stores.”
They say, the City of Dijon is perfectly situated from anywhere in France. Which means whenever you’re visiting Paris, Nice, Bordeaux, Champagne or wherever, a jaunt to Dijon is worth the trip for the wine lover in the family. Just before the pandemic, we were in Paris for a week and were on our way to the South of France, with a five-day layover in Dijon and then Beaune. Why rent a car in Paris when we can take the high-speed TGV and get to Dijon in just one and a half hours. Thereafter it was time to rent the car; you loyal readers may recall that I love driving the hills and country sides of France and Italy. Most happily, I proceeded to drive the rest of our five-week trip ending in the eternal city of Rome. Anyway—back to Dijon. The city wreaks food, culture, and wine. It’s been said, again, that Dijon is Burgundy’s Florence to Beaune’s Siena. Dunno if that helps but it gives a bit of comparison for those who travel mainly through Italy. Hey—traveling and eating through Europe is just a wonderful thing, so I thought for those who have the travel bug, a look at Dijon could be an interest. Another Dijon perspective is that the city is less than 30 miles north of the other Burgundian city of Beaune. We actually stayed in the Pommard vineyard nearby Beaune on our travels. And I covered Beaune three years ago in this column. But the joy of either staying in Beaune or Dijon is that the 30 mile travel between the two (aka Route des Vins the Wine Route), is through the most famous Burgundy vineyards in the world. Yup—we’re talking about Vosne Romanée, Vougeot or Gevrey Chambertin (Côte de Nuits) and Beaune, Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, and Puligny-Montrachet, just to name a select few. For you Pinot Noir enthusiasts—this is your heaven. It is so much fun and easy to course your own wine tasting tour on the aforementioned “Wine Route”. In the 14th and 15th centuries, Dijon was the capital of the Duchy of Burgundy, which controlled the big monies of eastern France, the Netherlands, Flanders and Luxembourg. The sumptuous home of the Dukes of Burgundy is still in place and is now a superb art museum as well as the city’s Hôtel de Ville. Matthew Hayes, wine traveler, writer, and long-time Dijon resident, reported, “Once plagued with poorly parked Peugeots and fume-spewing buses, under the mayorship of ex-employment minister François Rebsamen, Dijon’s centre has been entirely pedestrianised. From the station to the central Place de la Libération is barely a ten-minute walk, and almost everything of interest is within a 500-metre radius.

Sometimes Marie fosters a mother dog with nursing puppies. At other times she fosters just the little orphaned ones or a single older small dog. CAN YOU FOSTER JUST ONE ANIMAL?Marie enthusiastically exclaims, “I love fostering! I love knowing that my efforts often save a dog’s life. Fostering is such an important part of my life that I can’t imagine not doing it. Yes, sometimes I cry a little after they leave for a home, but the sadness quickly leaves when I anticipate the next one. And I think about how sad that dog was when it was in a shelter. Fostering gives me purpose, and it fulfills a need within me that is hard to explain in words. I participate in the adoptions and get photos and updates from the adopters.” Dedicated foster parents like Marie Marcinko expand the walls of our valley’s shelters. They are the vital link to creating a “No Kill Coachella Valley” where the number of dogs and cats euthanized in public shelters is dramatically reduced. A rescue dog or cat is more likely to be successfully adopted after the loving handling and attention they receive in a foster home. Foster parents provide valuable information about the pet’s temperament.LovingAllAnimals provides foster parents with food, supplies, and the support they need every step of the way. Loving All Animals pays for the vet care the animals require, including their vaccinations, microchipping, and spaying/neutering. They have extensive social media contacts to find wonderful adopters. Your phone call today enables Loving All Animals to go out tomorrow and save a homeless animal in need. Call Loving All Animals at (760) 834-7000 or visit www. lovingallanimals.org and complete the online volunteer application to become part of their life saving foster team. The greatest need is for fosters for big dogs and fosters for kittens. You can also foster a dog or cat directly from our Riverside County Shelter, the Coachella Valley Animal Campus, 72-050 Pet Land Place, Thousand Palms. They can be contacted at www.rcdas.org and (760) 3433644. Because of staff shortages in answering calls, you can go there in person during visiting hours 10am to 4pm Monday through Saturday and sign up. That animal will be overjoyed when it leaves with you! They call it a “foster failure” if you decide to adopt your foster animal, but that’s also a happy ending! Janetmcafee8@gmail.com

In a nation that treats dogs like family and delights in the joy of lively puppies and kittens, there are still countless litters of these little creatures rendered homeless by a variety of circumstances. Groups of abandoned and neglected animals suffer in our desert heat, laying huddled together for comfort. They are subject to heat stroke, parasites, and a variety of deadly diseases. Some will perish. Others, litters of young animals and older ones end up in large overcrowded public shelters. Sometimes these facilities cannot accommodate their frequent feedings, including possible bottle feeding, as they do not have overnight staff.
For a variety of reasons, including the economy and the number of renters with pets facing eviction, summer 2022 brings an increase in the number of stray dogs and cats roaming the streets and coming into public shelters. At the same time, there is a shortage of foster homes. The snowbird fosters are gone until late Fall. And after two years of restricted travel during the pandemic, many Coachella Valley residents are taking long vacations. One local woman making a difference is Marie Marcinko, Loving All Animals extraordinary foster mom, who specializes in fostering precious homeless puppies. This

Talking can rarely do you any good, so I advise my readers, friends and clients, “DON’T TALK TO ANYONE” when there is an accident or criminal investigation. This is especially true for not talking to the INSURANCE ADJUSTER …WITHOUT YOUR LAWYER’S PERMISSION. IT IS NOT WHAT YOU SAY, BUT WHAT THEY THOUGHT THEY HEARD YOU SAY! I always suggest you set your lawyer up as a strawman. In other words you would be happy to talk, however, your lawyer has asked you not do so without his/her permission. Putting the blame on “Mame” as the song says. It is what the people charged in the January 6th riot, or any other criminal matter, are advised to do. Trump refused to answer questions and took the 5th 440+ times. However, his lawyer would argue, that it was the lawyer telling him not to talk, rather than THE DONALD refusing. Remember to avoid the Worst Day or Year in your life, IF YOU HAVE BEEN DRINKING ANY AMOUNT & WERE IN AN AUTO ACCIDENT OR STOPPED FOR A POSSIBLE DUI, THAT (FST’S) FIELD SOBRIETY TESTS (WALK THE LINE, FINGER TO NOSE ETC) ARE OPTIONAL, AS IS THE BREATH TEST AT THE SCENE (IF YOU ARE NOT ON PROBATION). YOU SHOULD COURTEOUSLY OPT NOT TO TAKE ANY TESTS AT THE SCENE

One of the most famous books, A Tale of Two Cities, starts with… These are the best of times, these are the worst of times. The worst of times often occurs during a major holiday weekend when there are more cars on the road and more people drinking and celebrating the holiday. The resulting accident or arrest will certainly be the worst day of your life…if you live!School is just starting and Labor Day weekend is around the corner. That means more cars on the road AND an uptick in Alcohol Related Arrests and Auto Accidents. Chances are you, a loved one or friend, are not going to be in an accident this week. However, it takes so little to plan now, while you are not stressed, to think of who you would call if you, a family member or friend, were rear ended and injured. If an arrest or accident happens to you, it will be the worst day of your life. We all have the phone number of a plumber, A/C company and electrician, handy in case we need one. Wouldn’t it make sense to consider now, who you would call if you needed a Personal Injury or DUIIfAttorney.anACCIDENT or DUI occurs, it is important to remember that SILENCE IS GOLDEN and HANDCUFFS ARE SILVER. PER YOUR LAWYERS INSTRUCTIONS, AND ASK FOR A BLOOD TEST. After an accident or DUI arrest, I tell my clients to take down social media. Investigators for the DA or Insurance Company can save a lot of money on investigation, by just checking Facebook, Instagram and other sites etc. Some accident victims foolishly post that they are going skiing, playing tennis or entering a marathon etc. right after an accident. A client shouldn’t post that they were lucky not to have been stopped the day before when they were even more drunk or any other post about their drinking or negligent driving etc. It is always a good idea to hire a LOCAL attorney who will know the judges and court employees. That should be done ASAP. Once one has a lawyer, you can no longer be contacted by an investigator on either type of case. Whether you are found guilty or not guilty of a DUI or prevail with your accident case, you will still encounter the “worst of times”. All defendants lose time and money from: the arrest; court trips; bail; retaining counsel; loss of earnings and dealing with the stress and how it affect the family. The National Center for Education Statistics shows that we have more than 130,000 Kindergarten through 8th grade or middle school in the United States. There are an estimated 35 million K-8 students. In total, more than 50 million people attend school with 7 million learning here in California. Roughly 23 million identify as Caucasian, 14 million Hispanic, 7 million Black and 3 million Asian. Approximately 4 million teachers educate these students. The American taxpayer spends more than $13,000 on average for each student at a publicAccordingschool. to US News, the highest rated high school in the country is located in Alexandria, Virginia. The Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology has a STEM-focused curriculum. Courses include DNA science, robotics, marine biology and more. With 15 research labs including astronomy, astrophysics, and geophysical systems, It is clear that this is not your normal high school. 100% of the 1,800 students graduate this four-year school graduate with 100% ready for college. Academic Magnet High School in North Charleston, South Carolina comes in second with a similarly perfect score. As the schools The top high school in the Coachella Valley School District is West Shores High School at the Salton Sea. 95% of students are classified as minority as well as coming from poor families. With these challenging statistics, 85% of its students graduate with 1 in 2 ready for college. Coachella Valley High School graduates 84% with only 1 in 5 ready for college while Desert Mirage in Thermal graduates 81% but has 1 in 3 ready for college. While our local results are hampered by a large low-income population, we do not have a high school with the learning labs of the best schools in the country. 5 ways to determine if it’s time to upgrade your equipment With entertainment technology and equipment continually changing, it can be difficult to know when to update your gear. It can also be very tempting to buy the best and newest equipment when you do not need to. This would also be rather impractical, given how often new equipment is released these days and how costly it would be. Experts recommend that you upgrade your equipment at least every five years If you use a lot of smart home devices or have a habit of purchasing new laptops, tablets, and other primary Wi-Fi devices, make it every two to three years. That means there are potentially a lot of us who can benefit from upgrading to new equipment. Here’s how to make sense of it all and make the right update at the right moment.
· De-tech yourself. We rely on technology (and the screens we stare at every day) to be able to work anywhere at any time. But the downside is that many first responders don’t take the time to disconnect. Learn to shut down your computer for the day and establish hours when you don’t respond to emails. Do the same with your addictive cell phone. It can wait!
and pains or restless nights, there are plenty of things you can try during National Wellness Month to tune up your body:
This month gives us all a chance to put renewed emphasis on our personal wellbeing. Wherever you work or whatever you do, you have an even greater incentive to stay well. After all, your physical performance and mental responsiveness don’t just impact success or failure — they could be the difference between life or death. When you think of wellness, what comes to mind? Many will immediately think about their physical health and the steps they can take to make sure their bodies are in shape to handle whatever life throws at them. Others turn to mental wellness, which involves finding positive, proactive strategies to cope with the stress and self-doubt. We’ll focus on both physical and mental wellness, but there are other areas you might want to consider:·Emotional wellness: how your mood influences your life and those around you
5. Is the manufacturer still supporting the device: This is very important. If the device is no longer supported by software updates or has reached its End of Life (EoL) date, it’s time to upgrade to something newer. Dealing with outdated equipment that isn’t working at its best wastesWhiletime.this list isn’t exhaustive, it should provide you with lots of ideas for when to upgrade your smart home technology. When you’re ready to consider an upgrade, our Eggsperts are here to help with designing a custom solution that’s just right for you. The most fundamental thing to remember is that you should not only buy for the present but also potential technological developments in the next five years. Streaming high-quality videos online require a fast internet connection as well as a server capable of handling the data traffic. Users rarely encounter video playback problems on Netflix since the platform is well designed for watching high-resolution movies and TV shows. This is not to say that Netflix is immune to occasional errors and issues. For example, you’ve probably seen a spinning wheel on Netflix while watching your favorite show. Most of the time, this means that your internet connection is slow and that the app is having difficulty loading the content. It is also likely that the issue is due to a defective system or a problem with Netflix’s server.According to Netflix’s official support page, the first thing you can do if you’re experiencing constant buffering is to check your basic settings. First of all, check your internet connection. If you’re using a wireless connection, ensure that the signal is strong and that other users aren’t
It’s usually best to try to get it fixed if it’s a very hogging your bandwidth. To access any Netflix content, a minimum constant download speed of 0.5 megabits per second (Mbps) is required. If the connection seems to be working properly, turn it off and then restart your machine or video game console. There may be different solutions for different types of devices, that are: Blu-ray player, Computer, Game console, Mobile phone or tablet, Set-top box, Smart TV and Streaming media player. In case if you’re Streaming on your Desktop, turn off any unwanted background applications or games that might be hogging resources. Make sure a patch or other downloadable content (DLC) isn’t downloading if you’re watching a movie on a console. If your buffering issues continue, try resetting your home network and then using a free Internet speed test to check your download speed. Finally, rather than relying on wireless, link your devices directly to a modem or router to reduce the chances of service interruption.
· Stretch it out. We all need to stretch to counteract the effects of the day, whether we’ve been sitting at a desk for hours, working on our feet, or simply trying to overcome all the stress we’ve taken in. It may feel silly, but if you’re holding a long meeting, build in some stretch breaks. Stretching feels good, helps improve circulation and relieves muscle soreness. Wellness for Your Mind Your mind is part of your body, obviously, but it has a whole different set of special needs. As a first responder, you need to pay special attention to the things that affect your mood and mental acuity. Here are a few ideas: NATIONAL WELLNESS MONTH!
· Get more exercise. Being physically active for 30 minutes a day can keep your body healthy, help you sleep better, and improve your mood over time. You don’t even need to be a gym rat to see the benefits. Even taking regular walks can help.
· Seek professional help. When everything becomes too much, do not hesitate to reach out to a qualified therapist to help with your well-being. Many first responder agencies have programs in place that cover the costs for this. Find out what’s available and get the help you need.
· Get more sleep. Sleep helps you with your day-to-day energy and mood. If you’re not waking up refreshed most mornings, there are things you can do to increase the quality of your sleep.
1. Something is too slow to be useful: If your workstation continues crashing and you are unable to stream movies properly as a result, it may be time to replace your equipment. Not necessarily the entire machine, but replacing components can sometimes solve the problem. Even simple things like ensuring sure your desktop isn’t cluttered with files and closing applications you’re not using can help your computer run faster.
· Drink more water. Water is essential for hydrating the body for optimal functioning, improving the look and quality of skin, energizing muscles, and controlling calories. The science is clear: hydration improves your quality of life in many different ways.
· Social wellness: the health of your relationships with others, both in and out of your home

AUGUST IS
The Big Picture With August being National Wellness Month, now is the perfect time to work on your overall physical and mental well-being. You don’t necessarily have to make huge changes — even little steps can have dramatic effects over time. If you’re reading this and it’s not August, there’s no reason to wait until the next National Wellness Month to improve your mind, body, and spirit. Take a few minutes and do a self-check to determine where you might be struggling. When you see room for improvement, make small changes and carry them through for maximum benefits.
· Be mindful in your eating. Reducing processed foods and increasing your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables can help you feel better both physical and mentally.
4. Upgrading to the next generation of technology: Computer technology and security are continually evolving, and with the release of the latest generations, we’ve witnessed some huge leaps in the last few years. Generational advancements like this leave yesterday’s equipment in the dust, therefore it’s worth updating to new equipment that supports them as soon as it makes sense, even if the one you’re using now is still doing the job.

· Occupational wellness: your overall job satisfaction, productivity, and work-life balance
· Spiritual wellness: the impact of your relationship with a higher power Whatever your focus, National Wellness Month serves as a great reminder to pay more attention to mind, body and spirit and take steps to improve your wellness-related habits. What Impacts Our Wellness? Most of us live fast-paced lives and place large demands on our minds and bodies. Often, this never-ending flurry of activity creates the notion that well-being is just a “nice-to-have” thing— something we’ll work on when we can get around to it. In our rush to get everything done, we often overlook self-care. Also, the world we live in can be challenging to our wellness. The constant negative information
· Learn to meditate. Taking time to focus your mind and energy can help down the volume on stress and anxiety. If meditation isn’t your thing, try doing some yoga.

· Practice gratitude. In psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently correlated with greater happiness. Learning to be more grateful helps you feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve your health, deal with adversity and build stronger relationships. It literally makes you happier!
2. Incompatibility: As time passes and technology advances, the methods through which we connect our equipment to computers evolve as well. Another issue with compatibility is that if your equipment is relatively old, it may not always operate with newer hardware and software.
5 WAYS TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO UPGRADE YOUR EQUIPMENT. nice piece of antique equipment that gives you a great video or effect that’s difficult to replicate on a current version. It’s possible that all it needs is a new piece, which would be a reasonably simple fix. It might be wiser to replace or upgrade to a newer model or version if it’s an easily replaceable and relatively low-cost piece of equipment.
from 24-hour news sources can have a deep, negative impact on our mood and overall outlook. If regularly use social media, it’s easy to follow into the “comparison trap,” thinking everybody has a better life than you, not realizing that most people share only their best days, and never their worst. When it comes to wellness, it’s easy to become overwhelmed or confused. One source might tell you, “This is good for you,” while the next source might say it’s bad. This confusion can create stress in itself. We can get so wrapped up in trying to decipher what is right and what is wrong, we often lose sight of our goals. We ignore ourselves and then, like a race car without a pit stop, our mental and physical motors blow — leaving us with irreparable damage. To find the right responses to the stressors in our lives — such as anxiety, depression, and other conditions — we need to shift our attention and focus on what we can control learn to avoid or reduce the impact of those we can’t. And that’s why it’s so great to have National Wellness Month, 31 days devoted to taking care of ourselves (and each other). When the changes we make start producing results, the quest for wellness can become becomes addictive. Wellness for Your Body Whether you’re dealing with days full of aches

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Be fluid and flexible while still being rooted and sturdy. Be soft and sensitive even as you are also firm and resolute. Be mostly modest and adaptable, but become assertive and outspoken as necessary. Be cautious about inviting and seeking out challenges, but be bold and brash when a golden challenge arrives. Be your naturally generous self most of the time, but avoid giving too much. Got all that, Cancerian? Carrying out the multifaceted assignments I just described might be nearly impossible for most of the other signs of the zodiac, but they are in your wheelhouse. You are a specialist in fertile complexity.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Tips on how to get the most out of the coming weeks: 1. Create a big spacious realization by weaving together several small hunches. 2. Keep a little angel on your right shoulder and a little devil on your left shoulder. Enjoy listening to them argue, and don’t get attached to anything they say. 3. Do the unexpected until it becomes expected. Then abandon it and try a new, unexpected experiment. 4. Meditate expansively on the question, “How many careers can I have in one lifetime?” 5. Enhance your home so it feels even more comfortable.

LIGHT Instruction Manual by Aimee Mosco and Donald L. Ferguson, page 9 This includes color. Did you know that a color is really just a visible light frequency? The vibrational frequency or energy signature that registers to you as a particular color contains volumes of energetic information within it. You may not be able to discern what a particular color represents from an information perspective, but your soul is able to. Your soul speaks the language of energy. This is one of the reasons why you may feel a particular emotion or sensation when you look at a color. That color is communicating something specific to your soul and your soul is relaying that message to your brain. When you have this understanding and you look at a color with the intent to connect with the energetic messages held by the color, the experience may well be much more potent than when you unintentionally or accidentally connect visually with colors around you. Keep this in mind when you are looking at colors if you want to elevate your experience with them. When you connect with the highest degree of consciousness and invite integration of the energy messages available to you through this communication, you open yourself to receiving healing, benevolent Universal support, comfort and so much more. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): In his poem “The Pupil,” Virgo-born Donald Justice speaks of how he spent “a whole week practicing for that moment on the threshold.” I advise you to do the same, Virgo. The goal is to be as prepared as you can be for the upcoming rite of transition—without, of course, being neurotically over-prepared. It’s fine and natural to honor the tension of anticipation, using it as motivation to do your best. One other thing: As you get ready, please have as much fun as possible. Visualize the sense of accomplishment you’ll feel when you’ve reached the other side of the test.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “One is always at home in one’s past,” wrote author Vladimir Nabokov. But I encourage you to rebel against that theory, Libra. For now, find a way to NOT feel at home in your past. Question it, be curious about it, re-evaluate it. My hope is that you will then be motivated to change how your history lives in you.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Be extra expressive with the people and animals you care about. Be even more amusing and generous than usual. Dare to be abundantly entertaining and engaging and empathetic. Make it your goal to draw out your allies’ dormant potentials and inspire them to love themselves even more than they already do. I’ll tell you about the endearing terms that author Vladimir Nabokov called his wife. Consider using them with your dear ones: “My sun, my soul, my song, my bird, my pink sky, my sunny rainbow, my little music, my inexpressible delight, my tenderness, my lightness, my dear life, my dear eyes, kittykin, poochums, goosikins, sparrowling, bird of paradise.”

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In her poem “Valentine,” Capricorn poet Carol Ann Duffy tells a lover she won’t give her a “red rose or a satin heart.” Instead, her token of affection is an onion, a symbol of multi-layered complexity. “Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips,” Duffy writes, “possessive and faithful as we are, for as long as we are.” She adds that the onion will “blind you with tears like a lover.” OK. I understand the tough attitude expressed by Duffy. Romance isn’t a relentlessly sweet, sentimental romp through paradise. But I don’t recommend that you imitate her approach to your love life in the coming weeks and months. Appreciate the sometimes shadowy and labyrinthine convolutions, yes, but don’t make them more important than beauty and joy and love. How about invoking the symbol of a pomegranate? It represents fertility and rebirth out of the darkness.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Aries filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky wrote, “All my life, I’ve been going around waiting for something—as if I were waiting in a railway station. And I’ve always felt as if the living I’ve done so far hasn’t actually been real life but a long wait for it—a long wait for something real.” If I could speak with Tarkovsky right now, I would cheerfully tell him that his wait will soon be over. I’d say that in the coming months, Aries people who have been postponing and postponing, who have been standing by and holding on and biding time, will have an excellent chance to begin inhabiting their full, rich destiny. I invite you to imagine what that will feel like.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Taurus poet Sherko Bekas wrote, “Each joy I wear, its sleeves are either too short or too long, too loose or too tight on me. And each sorrow I wear fits as if it were made for me wherever I am.” With this as our starting point, Taurus, I’m pleased to report some good news. In the next three weeks, you will have zero sorrows to try on and wear like a garment. And there will be at least three joys that fit just right. The sleeves will be the correct length, and the form will be neither too loose nor too tight.
Now is an excellent time to reconfigure your life story, to develop a revised relationship with its plot twists and evolution. Revisit and update some of your memories. Re-evaluate the meanings of key events. Enchanting healings will materialize if you do.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Of all the signs in the zodiac, you Scorpios are most likely to regard that old pop tune by the Animals as your theme song. “I’m just a soul whose intentions are good,” croons lead singer Eric Burdon, “Oh, Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood.” But you may have less motivation to express that sentiment in the coming weeks, dear Scorpio. I suspect you will experience record-breaking levels of being seen and appreciated for who you are. For best results, do this: 1. Inform your deep psyche that you have no attachment to being misunderstood. 2. Tell your deep psyche that you would very much like to be well understood.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “Unless we are creators, we are not fully alive,” wrote Sagittarian author Madeleine L’Engle. She was referring to everyone, not just people in the arts. She believed that to be soulful humans, we must always make new things, generate fresh possibilities, and explore novel approaches. The restless urge to transform what already exists can be expressed in how we do our jobs, our parenting, our intimate relationships, and every other activity. You are now entering a phase, Sagittarius, when this initiatory energy will be especially available, needed, and valuable.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Sometimes, you may feel you’re under the influence of a debilitating spell or hindered by a murky curse. Pisceans are prone to such worries. But here’s a secret. More than any other zodiac sign, you have the power to escape from spells. Even if you have never studied the occult or read a witch’s grimoire, you possess a natural facility for the natural magic that disperses curses. From the depths of your psyche, you can summon the spiritual force necessary to cleanse the gunk and free yourself. Now is a perfect time to prove to yourself that what I’ve said here is true. FROM THE BREWER BY BREWMASTER ED HEETHUIS KEGWHISPERER
the better job it does of detecting sweetness. How sweet is it? Cotton candy? Bubble gum? Fresh apple? Lettuce? Black coffee? As you can see, we have many reference points for sweetness as the above list doesn’t even begin to describe the tip of the iceberg. Immediately after entry, liquid quickly passes to the middle of the tongue and into the heart of the palate. We appraise the beer at this stage as well. Does it dance lightly across the tongue, simply lay there lifelessly, or something in between? Does the carbonation light up the insides of the cheeks? Bigger tastes and combinations of flavors become more prominent during this period. Whoa, both banana and cloves are prominent in this hefeweizen? Your Budweiser reminds you of little green apples? That British ESB seems to evoke the taste of butterscotch? As we quickly approach the finish, the beer does its best to leave a lasting impression. Unlike wine, to be properly tasted and not wasted, the beer must be swallowed. Our tongue extends a good couple of inches down our esophagus, and that is where the most sensitive of our bitter receptors reside. This part of the palate gives us our final, lasting impression of the beer and wraps up the story. Here we receive clues as to the absolute bitterness of the brew, how full or thin the body is and the swallow should set us up nicely for the next taste. So…that’s the story every beer tells. Next time you pop a cap or open a can, think about the story that your beer is telling you. Take a moment to look for the entry, midtaste, and the finish. Every great brewer takes all of this (and more) into account when writing a recipe as they are literally painting an illustration to their story on your palate. The good news is that you get to form your own opinion of that picture and their story, and you can’t be wrong. When Ed Heethuis isn’t brewing at Spotlight 29 Casino for 29 Brews, you will find the Certified Cicerone / Brewmaster out on his road bike, practicing as a Smokejumper, or talking beer with the patrons at Taproom 29. He may be reached at: heethuis.ed@gmail. com or wherever beer may be found in the wild. story into three very distinct segments as well. The beginning is referred to as the entry, the body is referred to as midtaste and the ending is termed the finish. Every taste of beer tells this story, although the tale may change as the temperature of the brew rises. This is true of all beers, but easiest to identify in darker, malt-forward beers such as Porter and Stout. Let us take these three distinct subdivisions separately.Entryis as straightforward as it sounds. As beer hits our mouth, we begin subconsciously become as judgmental as Lindsey Lohan in Mean Girls. Every characteristic of entry is subject to a quick evaluation. Is it cold enough? Too Cold? Too warm? How does the tip of the tongue react to the carbonation? Is it really zippy? Moderately bubbly? Simply flat? The closer you get to the tip of tongue, I’m of the belief that every beer weaves a tale totally unique to both the consumer and the brewer alike. The alcoholic nature of our craft assists beer in forming a deeper bond with the purchaser, while the wide-open nature of brewing ingredients assures brewers that, like snowflakes, no two beers are exactly alike. In reality, handing two brewers from different breweries the exact same recipe and the exact same ingredients will do little to assure that the resulting brews will taste exactly the same. Like music, beer makes a strong personal and intimate connection with folks of all walks of life. It has the innate ability to transport us to a different time and/or a different place instantaneously while flooding the user with vivid memories. Many people experience Kona Brewing products while in Hawai’i and continue to purchase large quantities of Longboard Lager long after returning home because the flavor reminds them of the island aura they experienced. Think back to days gone by; in elementary school, we first learned how to write a story. We were taught that every good story included a beginning which included introductions to the characters and the plot. During the middle, or body of the story, the plot continues to develop and the tale becomes more interesting to the reader. The finale of the story could take one of several turns. It could be a total surprise, the narrator could wake up from a dream, or, best case scenario…result in a happy ending. Much to the surprise of many, beer tells its story much the same way. Beer separates its

Fitness is a lifestyle – it’s about instilling life-long habits, and doing things that you don’t always want to do. For a free (760)880-9904consultation: day on aimless activities. Some activities are aimless, done only because they are pleasing in the moment. Some activities like this are: Scrolling through social media Watching Netflix / Youtube / TV Playing video games In limited amounts, no more than an hour or two a day, these types of activities can be a a great way to decompress. Any more than that, and you’re going beyond the ‘decompression mode.’ In essence you are ‘wasting valuable time’ that could be better spent on achieving your fitness goals. People who are focusing on their fitness as a ‘daily habit’ don’t spend endless hours doing these types of things because they are aware that every hour sucked away by aimless activities is another hour they will never get back. It’s not that they try not to spend time doing these things — it’s the fact that wasting that much time makes them sick.
1. You fail to get out of bed as soon as you wake-up.

2. You spend more than an hour or two a WHY YOU MIGHT ME RUINING YOUR FITNESS?
5. You worry what others think of you. People that truly succeed in fitness are those that are too busy focusing on themselves to worry what others think of them. Yes, some might worry about what people who matter think of them, but they don’t worry about what their friends, family, or social media following thinks. They are too busy focusing on their own health and fitness tasks!Ifyou routinely worry about what your friends, family, peers, or social media following thinks of you, you may be letting your fitness potential slip by. Instead of doing what others approve of, find a fitness plan and purpose that you can be true to; even when you feel the world is turning upside down around you. After reading this article, do any of the five reasons mentioned above equate to why your weight-loss / fitness goals haven’t happened?
Fit people don’t sit around daydreaming about what their future body might look or feel like. People who have successful transformations pick a goal for the future and then work hard to make that goal happen. Someone who spends all their time daydreaming is not someone who spends all their time doing. Think about weightlifters. They spend a little bit of their time researching how to lift weights more effectively, and a lot of their time lifting weights.
4. You spend more time planning than actually ‘doing.’ If you spend more of your time in “lala land,” daydreaming, planning or thinking about being fit, rather than working on your fitness, then you are not making the most of your fitness opportunities.

instead of feeling accomplished. Think back to a time when you got a restful night sleep – were you productive that day? Now think back to a time when you struggled to fall asleep… how much time did you waste in the day on aimless activities?

Ever wondered if you might be ruining your best years when it comes to being fit? A lot of us spend our years wanting to be fit – merely passing the time rather than making the most of the days/months/years we have in life to be “able” to take full advantage of becoming our own version of what it is to be ‘fit.’Most of us spend our time partying, eating junk food, and taking vacations rather than working out, acquiring new skill sets, building healthy fit-habits, and investing in mental and physical wellness.
3. You aren’t ready for bed at the end of the day. People whose days are filled with purposeful activities feel tired at the end of the day. Whether it’s mental work or physical exercise, purposeful activity (especially fitness related tasks) uses up energy and will leave you looking forward to your night time routine. When you aren’t making the most of your life and fitness opportunities, you might fail to feel that relaxing desire to hit your head on the pillow at the end of the day. Your mind is still racing, (I still need to do x,y.z etc)…
I ask you this one question – “Are you passing the time instead of making the most of your fitness potential?” Here are some ways to tell if your day-today routine is ruining your fitness goals.
If you spend a half hour to an hour scrolling on your phone before getting out of bed; I am sorry to say this – but you are NOT making the most of your ‘fitness opportunities!’
enthusiasm for the cuisine and culture is infectious. We started with a tubular fishcake cut into rounds and stuffed with a small piece of asparagus, drizzled with soy and a dab of wasabi. Next it was wafer-thin slices of turnip flavored with yuzu (Japanese citrus) juice and shoyu. In addition to the appetizers, we were treated to cold sake tastings with complex flavor profiles ranging from floral, citrus, mineral, and smoky. I have only tried warm sake at sushi bars and these flavors were a revelation to my taste buds. Sake tastings are available during business hours and cooking classes are offered weekly and are reasonably priced.Wabi Sabi is stocked with authentic cooking ingredients and tools sourced directly from Japan. If you would like to explore Japanese cuisine beyond sushi and tempura and learn more about a different culture, I Izakaya dates back to the Edo Period (1603) as a drinking establishment. Gradually, inexpensive menu items such as sashimi yakitori, pickled dishes, and rice and noodles were added. Currently, Izakaya restaurants are the most popular dining and drinking venues in Japan. Partners Osamu Sagara and Darrel Baum decided to move from Los Angeles to open a Japanese home goods store in Palm Springs. They travel to Japan every year to keep up with current trends in dining and food preparation. Their store features typical Japanese groceries, sake, beer, an extensive collection of cutleries, cookware, pottery, jewelry, Bonsai plants, women’s clothing, and travel, design, and recipe books. My introduction to Wabi Sabi was a Saturday evening cooking class on preparation of a few Izakaya appetizers with sake pairings. It is as if owners, Darrel and Osamu (Sam) invited you into their house for a convivial evening of sake and Japanese tapas. Their encourage you to take a cooking class and enjoy a fun night out in their downtown Palm Springs location. 300 N. Those who want to live a fit purposeful life don’t spend time lounging around on their phones while in bed after waking up. They also don’t hit the snooze button multiple times- day after day. In essence, waking up is no big deal, it’s just the start of another random day. To someone who truly embodies fitness: waking up every morning is a refreshing welcome to another day of hard yet meaningful work.
