f any band is the ultimate contradiction of its name, it’s House of Broken Promises. The rock power trio out of Indio, CA has navigated its way on the back of one original album, Using the Useless (Small Stone Records 2009) and has claimed title to their own brand of desert rock that guarantees gratification at each live show. With Arthur Seay (guitar & vocals), Mike Cancino (drums & vocals) and Joe Mora (bass & lead vocals), HOBP has waved the desert rock flag around the world and are preparing to hit the stage with new music. HOBP will be performing on night one of the Desert Music Showcase at Schmidy’s Tavern in Palm Desert, CA. The two-night spectacle features eight artists from the Coachella Valley and Hi-Desert in a format that further propels desert music into the global spotlight. Night one will be held Friday, 8/21 and will also include Remnants of Man, In The Name Of the Dead and Bridger. Night two is Saturday 8/22 and features Machin’, Giselle Woo & the Night Owls, Courtney Chambers and Caxton. Both shows begin at 8 p.m. and entry fee is $5 with 100% of door going to the artists. The name “House of Broken Promises” comes from the struggle Seay & Cancino endured with their band Unida. “Mike and I were talking about all the label bullshit we went through with Unida and he said, “Yeah a real house of broken promises,” and I said, “there ya go that’s the name of our new band!” Out of all the negativity came pure positivity and musical freedom.” In 2009 they released the album Using the Useless with then bassist and vocalist Eddie Plascencia. Their debut album is a ter-RIFF-ic mix of stoner rock and metal. “I still dig it and am very proud of it. I built my studio and bought a Pro Tools book and went for it. We made it happen with little to nothing,” Seay shared. Cancino feels the same, “The Useless record still rocks for me. I’m very proud of it.” Former HDR vocalist and guitarist Mora entered the fray in 2011 and propelled the band with his gritty vocal style and bass playing swagger. “I would say my vocals are a “happy hour priced cocktail” of Chris Cornell, John Fogerty and of course, John Garcia. Those are my three favorite vocalists. I learned how to sing by singing along to their records,” Mora admits. Seay affirms, “Joe is a great guy and a very talented player. When we first started jamming together it felt right and over time we have definitely found our groove in all aspects.” Cancino concurs, “Our chemistry is awesome. Joe made a killer transition to bass.” Cancino and Seay have a meaningful history of being in bands together. “Mike and
I have been playing together since we were in high school, so we have that Jedi shit down with each other and a certain style of how we play and write,” Seay shared. Mora is fully cognizant of their history which enables him to navigate and differentiate the friend/band mate relationships. “Arthur and Mike have known each other since elementary school, so at times I feel I am a Dr. Phil for them. Arthur and I come from different schools of thought. So at times we disagree, but in the end we both want what’s best for the band. Everyone is open to new ideas. Every riff gets a chance. Arthur usually comes up with the first riff then Mike and I come up with parts of our own.” This camaraderie and mutual respect is big as life during their live shows. HOBP released a live album last year, HOBP Live in London Deserfest 2013. Seay recalls, “We flew into London from playing Desertfest Germany in Berlin the night before and drove straight to the venue, ran in, threw our luggage down and set up and played, no joke. I think our set time was 4pm and we walked in at 3:55.” The album is unmistakable HOBP and is intended to be heard at a high volume. “The recording is nice and raw. Harper Hug recorded it and Mark Armentrout mixed it.” HOBP are currently in production of a new album. It is being produced at Seay’s Bittersand Recording Studio in Indio, CA. “The new record is sounding HUGE! I’m a total gear nerd so I spent all my money and upgraded the studio buying gear. It’s never ending,” Seay admits. The release date for the new material is early to mid 2016. “It’s a slow process. I travel for work so when I’m gone everything stops. I will be completing all the engineering and producing of the record.” Cancino is excited about the prospect at releasing new music. “The new shit

photos by Chris Miller is killer. We worked so fuckin’ hard on it. Playing it is the best. It totally rocks!” Mora adds his take on the new music, “I tried to bring a lot more major melodies to the table to add to Arthur’s killer minor blues riffs. It’s a nice contrast. The new record has elements of stoner rock, old school metal and hard rock.” Both Seay and Mora remain closely associated with the music industry. “Joe and I both travel for work as back-line technicians. I’ve worked for Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Five Finger Death Punch and currently Godsmack. I tech for Sully Erna and Joe works for Tre Songz so when we are home we gotta hit it hard before we have to leave for months on end. All tracking will be done by the time I leave for tour in September and back by the end of November and then start mixing. I’m very thankful that I have a job in this day and age and one that is in the music industry where I can travel the world and get paid for it. I can’t complain but it’s a doubleedged sword. I get paid to travel the world but then you’re gone and your life stops till ya get back ya know?” HOBP fans will be glad to hear that Seay and company plan to perform live more often once their work duties are fulfilled. “HOBP will continue to work hard and get to a point of touring extensively in support of our new release.” On the Unida front, Seay, Cancino and front man John Garcia (Vista Chino) have exciting news coming related to their never released album that was originally scheduled for release in 2001. For the Working Man aka The Great Divide, was the album recorded under Rick Rubin’s American Recordings and was subsequently set aside after Rubin’s departure. Soul Sign is tracking a new record for a hopeful 2016 release. SS consists of Cancino on drums and vocals, Bjorn Englen (Y. Malsteen) on bass and vocals, Mark Boals (Y. Malmsteen) on lead vocals and Jan Mengeling (Coma Star) on guitar and vocals. Mora continues to work with Gregory White in the duo alternative-dirtyelectro-rock outfit Street Drugs DTLA. Upcoming shows: Fri. 8/21– Desert Music Showcase – Schmidy’s Tavern – Palm Desert, CA. 10pm. $5 Sat. 8/23 – Loaded Hollywood – Hollywood, CA. 7pm. DJ Day I
Photos and article By esther sanchez
still spinning for weeks, months and years to come...
have been dwelling in the desert long enough to remember a time where groups of young people who shared a passion for a blossoming local music and dance culture would organize events on a weekly basis at locations ranging from empty warehouses in North Palm Springs to somebody’s mom’s back-yard in Cathedral City to somebody’s uncle’s ranch in Coachella. It was during that time a kid named Damien Beebe was building the foundations for a career that would eventually take him to every corner of the globe. Most of us who were around during those seminal years are not the least bit surprised by his success. We knew back then that D.J. Day was the real deal. Lately, I have been referring to Beebe as, “the DJ’s, DJ.” I meet and associate with DJs on a regular basis and most of them who have been around for a while all feel the need to give props to Day. He has been mentioned to me numerous times by some of the younger cats who saw him as an inspiration. They also saw him as a guy who set the skill bar very high. Striving to push through the obstacles that occur naturally with humble beginnings, it took fierce determination, radical focus and unquenchable passion for Beebe to become the world-renowned artist that he is today. When Beebe and I got together at the Ace Hotel where he is the resident DJ at their weekly, “Reunion” in the Amigo Room, he was admittedly exhausted from having just flown in from Philadelphia. He was also still riding the emotional high from what he referred to as a, “life-changing” experience at the first ever, “Playlist Retreat” held in the opulent home of DJ Jazzy Jeff. Yes, folks....as in, “DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.” Beebe was one of just over 2-dozen DJs on the planet who was invited to stay at his home for several days while sharing with and learning from one another. The
4

artists were all hand-picked and invited by Jeff himself. To be there was to be at the top of your field. Definitely not a place Beebe would have imagined himself, way back when. Beebe: “Jeff was pretty much the reason I became a DJ. When I was about 13 I had ‘Rock the House’ which was DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince’s first album. I would listen to the track, “He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper” over and over. I analyzed all of the scratches intently but I had never really seen anyone scratching, visually. I asked my mom for turn-tables and that Christmas I got sort of a record-player with a cassette-deck attached. Needless to say, I was disappointed. She did not have the means to buy me what I wanted but I was really determined.” The father of 2 boys proceeded to describe to me impressive life hacks that he, as a 13 year-old kid McGyvered the limited tools he had in order to make music. Beebe: “The first time I tried to get up and DJ was at a house party with real turntables and mixer and I was nowhere near ready. I didn’t know how to use a mixer or anything and it was disastrous. People started booing and they pulled me down from the tables. I was crushed.” Beebe paused for a bit while gazing up at the mountains behind us. Beebe: “You know it’s moments like that when you have to decide. You are either going to accept it and lay down or you are going to say, ‘F*** that. I’m going to come back here and show these people what’s up. I loved it too much to give up. For an entire year I had precision focus. My friends Manny (DJ Magneto) and Marceleno Ancheta (DJ Mars) would let me practice with and use their equipment because it was a long time before I was able to afford any of my own. I am eternally grateful to both of them and their families for that. If it wasn’t for those people who nurtured
me and my art, I would definitely not be sitting here today. So eventually I ended up at another party and the guys from the party where I was booed were there. I had practiced so hard that my situation was severely different than the year before. Long story short, that night I was validated for the first time as a DJ.” After many years of sharpening his
skills as a DJ and producer while attending conferences and playing in venues ranging from back-yards to stadiums, all while working day-jobs…the co-founding member of Innernational Crew decided one day to upload a track of a remix he created onto a message board that caught the attention of a German record label. That moment of recognition and the eventual success of said track launched Beebe beyond the confines of Southern California and eventually cemented his place as a local artist who has reached iconic success in his field. Everhumble in attitude, Beebe takes it all in stride…Beebe: “I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunities I have had. It’s pretty surreal when I think about it because to me, I’m always going to be some kid from Palm Springs.” Check out DJ Day Thursdays for Reunion at the Ace Hotel. GRAMMY AND BILLBOARD AWARD WINNING BAND TRAIN SET TO PERFORM AT FANTASY SPRINGS RESORT CASINO
New Edition to Bring Old School Flair to Fantasy Springs by Alex Updike

hart-topping San Francisco-natives Train will bring their vast catalog of hit songs to fans at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino on Friday, November 6 on the Special Events Center stage. The Grammy and Billboard Award winning band will play tracks from their newest album, Bulletproof Picasso, including the top 10 radio single “Angel in Blue Jeans,” along with their many hits and fan favorites from the past 20 years. Tickets for the 8:00 pm show went on sale Friday, August 7th for $129, $99, $89, $69 and at the Fantasy Springs Box Office, via telephone (800) 827-2946 or online at FantasySpringsResort.com. Bulletproof Picasso – the band’s 7th studio album – debuted at #5 on the Billboard Top 200 upon its September 16, 2014 debut and earned rave reviews. Billboard’s Richard Bienstock says the band’s “wholehearted embrace of pop has
unshackled Train, allowing it to revel in anything-goes stylistic tourism” that all feels “oddly cohesive, with the band’s rocker roots showing an impressive pliability to move within pop’s boundaries.” The climb to the top began in San Francisco in 1994. Train’s original 5-member band tenaciously built a loyal following, leading up to their own self-titled debut album, released by Columbia in 1998. The tumbling wordplay of “Meet Virginia” gave them their first unlikely radio hit, with 2001’s Drops Of Jupiter garnering multiplatinum status thanks to the doubleGrammy winning title song that spent 10 months in the Top 40. In their typical ‘yougotta’-nail-it-down-motherfucker’ style, the quixotic song snared the Best Rock Song trophy by beating out Coldplay and two U2 songs. The group won another Grammy in 2011 for their global hit “Hey Soul Sister,” the #1 best-selling smash and most downloaded single of 2010, from their multi-platinum album Save Me, San Francisco. Their most recent album, 2012’s California 37 launched the hit “Drive By,” which reached the Top 10 in 13 countries. They’ve sold more than 10 million albums worldwide, more than 30 million tracks, with multiple platinum/ gold citations, including 3 Grammy Awards, 2 Billboard Music Awards and dozens of other honors. Additionally, Train’s awardwinning Save Me, San Francisco Wine Co. has recently released their 6th varietal, ‘Bulletproof Picasso’ sauvignon blanc. Proceeds from the wine support Family House, a San Francisco charity that supports families of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

or over thirty years, New Edition has rocked stages as the blueprint for the modern day boy band. This Friday night, they will bring their signature style and famous stage show to the Coachella Valley as they perform at Fantasy Springs Casino. New Edition started in Boston, MA in the early 80s when childhood friends Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, Travis Pettus, and Corey Rackley formed a singing group and began entering local talent shows in the Boston area. It was at one of these talent shows that they were discovered and given the name New Edition to signify their status as a new edition of the classic group Jackson 5. Pettus and Rackley soon left the group and were replaced by Ralph Tresvant and Ronnie DeVoe, who made up the quintet, which was discovered in 1982 at another talent competition in the Boston area. Soon after, the group signed their first contract, recorded the hit album Candy Girl and, in 1983, embarked on their first major tour. It was this tour, and the disastrous aftermath, which would help shape and guide the young R&B sensations into the well-known group they are today. After their initial tour ended, the boys were promptly dropped off in the Boston projects they had come from and given less than two dollars each for their efforts. “It opened our eyes,” group member Ronnie DeVoe told me in the cool, suave way only a man who’s been a big deal for over 30 years
could pull off. “It’s good that it happened early.” In fact, it helped the group to understand the importance of the business side of the music industry. Afterwards, New Edition moved forward with their careers and garnered even more success in the 80s and 90s. But everyone with a radio and access to Wikipedia can tell you the history and success of the group. What makes that success, however, is who the men were before anyone knew their names. “Growing up we were heavily influenced by the local talent around Boston in the late 60s and early 70s, groups like The Untouchables, The Transitions, and Blue Magic were bands we wanted to emulate,” DeVoe stated. And the group worked hard. “What a lot of people don’t know is that we practiced 3-4 hours a day before “Candy Girl” came out,” DeVoe said. “We were really just enjoying the atmosphere of the talent shows. It was how to make the girls scream.” Even in the current social medialaden culture, DeVoe sees local talent shows and open mic nights as a great way to be seen or to discover new talent. “That’s ultimately what it’s about,” he said. “There’s nothing better than going to a karaoke night and seeing the raw talent.” Over thirty years later, the men of New Edition are still bringing their own raw talent to stages across the country, a task that could easily become tedious and monotonous without the right attitude. “It’s something we love to do,” DeVoe stated. “It’s a blessing from God and we have some of the best fans on the planet.” But do not expect New Edition’s success to stop. The group currently has a television deal with BET to produce a 3-night miniseries about many of the struggles they have faced in their careers. The men also have new music coming out next spring and a big tour planned with some surprise guests that DeVoe declined to reveal. Although the group may seem like old news to some, New Edition still has plenty of tricks up their sleeves to remain the gold standard for boy band success.

Local Music Spotlight
by Jack St. Clair Courtney Chambers Tales of the Aftermath
T
ales of the Aftermath is the 4th studio album from Courtney Chambers. True to its title, the album, for the most part, focuses thematically on coming out of a negative relationship, regrouping and then learning to open one’s self up again to find love. This is Chamber’s fourth studio album, the last of which was 2007’s Bigger and Brighter. Like that record, she has teamed up again with producer Sean Hoffman (American Music Club). Hoffman also lends his talents as a musician on the record playing bass, guitar and doing programming. Also performing on the album are Joey Galvan and George Stuppick on the drums. Chambers performs rhythm and lead guitars, piano and keyboards. The album is a ten track collection of wonderfully written adult contemporary songs, complete with memorable melodies and tasteful musicianship. Chamber’s is a proven performer who has been playing consistently from the Coachella Valley to Los Angeles for over a decade. Live, she is the real deal. She is an outstanding guitar player (she also plays the Nancy Wilson role in the Heart cover band Dog and Butterfly - and that is no easy task). Beyond that ability, this album highlights her skill to craft beautiful and thoughtful songs with deep meaning. In this writer’s opinion her best attribute is her voice; strong, soft, sultry, powerful and sweet. She could probably sing you the phone book (remember such things), and you would listen. It would be easy to pick any number of familiar female vocalists and compare her to them. And that is the best part. She doesn’t remind you of any one person. Throughout the album she reminds you of many. As if she has a chameleon like quality that adapts appropriately for each song, while at the same time leaving her own stamp on each song that lets you identify HER voice.
Tales of the Aftermath contains quite a few standout tracks. The opener “Fool in Me” is equal bits blues and soul, stripped down with a fantastic, almost spoken word bridge. It is followed by the albums’ most rocking track, “Bitter End”. A song that addresses the important issue of someone being in an abusive relationship. The chorus faces this head on, stating: “I’m a bit angry/ And I’m gonna be hard and now I know/ I’m not giving up my soul and I’ll defend it/ Till the bitter end.” It’s an anthem for anyone, female or male, to defend who they are, while faced with someone that demands them to be something or someone else other than who they are. There are several moments it seems the song will explode, yet Chambers pulls back the reins, letting the subtly have more of an impact. “Love and Music” contains some of the most poignant lyrics on the record, as Chambers weighs being in love with a person versus being in the love with music. Ultimately concluding - correctly - that the songs she makes will never hurt her, while love from a human being will always include the risk of pain. Of all the tracks on the record, “Extraordinary Lives” is the most easily identifiable. It reminds the listener of a Fleetwood Mac song. This is not a negative at all. It is a great song. Complete in lyric and composition, leaving you wishing it was even longer. “Wasting Time” starts off strong with a stomp/clap that gets you going. Perhaps it is the only track where the subtly that is beneficial to rest of the record could have been thrown out. The beginning leaves you wishing that it would explode to a full blown rocker. All in all it is a very good record. Definitely worth your listen. But more than that, as someone who has seen her live, worth your time to see her perform live. And while you are there, pick up a copy of Tales of the Aftermath. You’ll be glad you did.

THE BIRD AND THE BEE
“Recreational Love” (Rostrum Records)
Consider This
At first, Inara concentrated on theatre, performing Shakespeare as a kid, and later moving to Boston to study acting in the classical theatre tradition. As a lark, she and some high school pals created a band called Lode and were surprised when they got signed to Geffen Records in 1996. Lode released the pleasing Legs & Arms before Inara teamed up with Bryony Atkinson to form Merrick. Their indie-rock collaboration lasted a few years until she embarked on a solo career. In 2004, as she was recording her first solo album, All Rise, when her producer Mike Andrews introduced her to Greg Kurstin. Greg had also grown up in Los Angeles, and had his own Zappa connection, co-writing the b-side to classmate Dweezil Zappa’s “My Mother Is A Space Cadet” at age 12. He

ack in 2007, it seemed as though The Bird And The Bee literally burst on the music scene with their selftitled debut. But the duo, made up of vocalist Inara George and multi-instrumentalist Greg Kurstin had been mainstays of the Los Angeles music community for several years. Inara George grew up in Topanga Canyon, fully aware of her musical legacy. Her dad was Lowell George. A Hollywood native, Lowell nurtured musical aspirations even as a child. At age six he appeared on the Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour, singing a duet with his brother. During his teen years he was mildly contemptuous of Rock & Roll, preferring West Coast Jazz, along with artists like Les McCann and Mose Allison. He briefly fronted his own band, the Factory, before joining Frank Zappa’s Mothers Of Invention as rhythm guitarist in 1968. But Lowell George found his most lasting creative and commercial success as architect and front man for Little Feat, which he formed in 1969. Their style was an eclectic mash up of Rock, Blues, Country, Boogie and Jazz. Sadly, his appetites eclipsed his protean talents and Lowell George died in 1979 from heart failure, just five days before Inara’s fifth birthday.

focused on Jazz piano throughout high school and moved to New York to study with Charles Mingus’ pianist, Jaki Byard. After concentrating on Jazz for several years, he returned to L.A. and recorded a demo with his friend Tommy Jordan as Geggy Tah. David Byrne signed them to his boutique label, Luaka Bop. Ultimately Geggy Tah released three albums before disbanding. Greg made a living as a session musician, playing on albums by Beck, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Matthew Sweet and Jane’s Addiction, just to name a few. By the time he and Inara met, he was ready to concentrate on his own music. They bonded over shared musical tastes and collaborating with her seemed like a natural fit. She was the Bird to his Bee. Blue Note quickly signed the duo, and after a couple of EPs, their self-titled fulllength arrived in January 2007. Mixing French Pop, Tropicalia, lush Beach Boy harmonies, warm instrumentation and Inara’s pithy lyrics, the album received rave reviews. It wasn’t a commercial smash, but L.A.’s tastemaking station, KCRW put it in heavy rotation, guaranteeing prime exposure. They swiftly returned two years later with their sophomore effort, Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future. Their second album was just as beguiling as the first, trading the international flair of their eponymous record for a jazzier sound. It also included the wickedly amusing “Diamond Dave,” wherein Inara pledges her undying devotion to Van Halen’s penultimate front man, David Lee Roth. For the next couple of years, Inara and Greg tackled separate projects. She recorded a
second solo album, “An Invitation,” produced by eccentric visionary, Van Dyke Parks. He handled production chores for Lily Allen’s “It’s Not You It’s Me” album. When they reconnected, rather than record an album of new material, they whimsically paid tribute to another well-known duo, Hall & Oates. Released in 2010, Interpreting The Masters Volume 1: A Tribute To Daryl Hall And John Oates offered fresh takes on Pop classics like “She’s Gone” and “Sara Smile” that recalibrated the original versions without radically altering the signature sound. In the last five years, Inara and Greg have both been busy raising families and making music independently. Inara formed the Living Sisters with singer-songwriters Becky Diamond and Eleni Mandell, and released three albums. Greg remains an in-demand producer, working with everyone from Beck, Beyonce, Sia, the Shins, Foster The People, Kelly Clarkson, Lana Del Rey and Billy Idol. But no matter what, every Friday, they carved out time to work on The Bird And The Bee music. The result is their new record, Recreational Love. Typically, it sounds nothing like their first two albums. Taking a hard left turn, the music here seems to draw inspiration from late the ‘70s intersection of Disco and New Wave. “Young And Dumb” gets the album off to an infectious start. Pulsating keys, electronic blips and bloops, rippling vibes and synthesized hand-claps connect under Inara’s teasing falsetto. Mocking a successful rival, she resorts to school yard taunts to get her point across; “My mother said the very next one and you are not it!” Fractious piano notes on the instrumental break underscores her irritation. Early ‘80s Electro-Pop soundscapes are fully explored on “Will You Dance” and “Runaway.” Inara affects the breathless style of New Wave chanteuses like Terri Nunn from Berlin and Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons, overa four-on-the-floor beat. Except for the distaff vocals, the latter easily recalls the space-age love songs from hair-tastic Flock Of Seagulls, plus a soupcon of Hall & Oates’ “I Can’t Go For That” attitude. Tinkly percussion, airy synths and lush harmonies buoy Inara’s succinct seduction style. “We could get fancy, you could dine me and dance me/ But I’m telling you that’s really
my style, I’m not a cheap date, no mystery, no switch no bait/You could search the whole wide world, I’m just not like any girl.” The best track here is “Los Angeles” a heartfelt ode to their shared city of origin. Although it’s powered by a kick-drum beat, the melody is still equal parts swoony and feather light. Clearly sick of the shit-talk the City Of Angels endures at the hands of JohnnyCome-Latelys (or worse, New Yorkers), Inara issues a sharp rebuke; “Stop asking me where I come from, I’m from L.A.” Finally, she gently addresses her hometown directly, “Los Angeles, don’t listen to a word they say, they don’t need you in the same way/Los Angeles, don’t ever let them change you, they don’t know you like I do.” Several tracks feature stylistic flourishes that echo, but never imitate, beloved late ‘70s touchstones. The title track is a not so subtle swipe at the whole “Friends-with-benefits” paradigm, (known in ‘70s nomenclature as “sport fucking”). As guitar lines squiggle, keyboards quiver and percussion percolates, Inara presents her case for serial monogamy using a soulful, Minnie Ripperton-esque falsetto. The effervescent “Jenny” is anchored by a rubbery, triple-time beat, urgent synths and a funky base coat that absolutely recalls the Tom-Tom Club’s “Genius Of Love. Meanwhile, “Please Take Me Home” could be a cosmic cousin to Andrea True Connection’s “More, More More.” Finally, “Doctor” splits the difference between Carol Douglas’ classic, “Doctor’s Orders” and Giorgio Moroder’s pioneering production work for Donna Summer and Blondie. It’s lush and slightly ripe, but even the Supertramp-y honking sax solo is ridiculously fun. “Recreational Love’s final two tracks offer a bit of a cool-down after all the frenetic revelry. “We’re Coming To You” is a downcast plea for emotional rescue. Bloopy instrumentation and Inara’s weightless vocals keep everything on an even keel. The album closes with the hushed “Lovey Dovey” accompanied by quiet, contemplative keys, Inara’s mien seems ethereal and appealing, a soothing and lovely conclusion. Recreational Love offers a refreshing slice of summery fun. Even if it takes another five years to craft a follow-up, The Bird And The Bee is always definitely worth the wait.
ose King is an artist – she sings, dances, cooks and writes. She is an inspirational speaker drawing on her own life experience. Rose lost her eyesight to Retinitis Pigmentosa more than 20 years ago. But that has not stopped her from living life out loud. “I wrote Wosie the Blind Little Bunny because being different does not make one less human. In the story Wosie can’t see the mountains, the trees and the world around her. Wosie wanders away from all that is familiar to her. As she becomes lost she encounters others who are different than her. As the story unfolds Wosie and those she meets along the way learn acceptance. When we accept each other for who we are, we forget what make us different and why we are more alike,” said Rose. “I know people see me differently but why? Like Wosie, being blind cannot be helped. Blindness did not define Wosie. It certainly does not define me!” Rose’s book may appear to be a children’s story. The text is simple. The illustrations are eye catching. “The book is typecast a ‘children’s story’ but it is not. The story is universal. Every day we all face prejudice – our own and that of others. By focusing on traits, like blindness, we block out what make us special and forget what makes us alike. This blocking prevents us from being truly compassionate. Wosie personifies that compassion. I want people to focus less on the ‘traits’ we cannot control, be it skin color, height, ethnicity or blindness. ” Wosie is the first in a series of seven books. “There are six other stories involving Wosie, Bobo and other unique friends. Fernando the Frog lives in a wheel chair and Daphne the Pig is deaf. These characters
have what some may call a disability. Actually what they have is a special way of interacting with the world. Each adventure will introduce a new ‘Bobo’. A Bobo is a person who reaches out to help someone with no other motive other than to do the right thing,” noted Rose. “These stories are designed to show humanity in its simplest forms. The Golden Rule of doing unto others is universal – it does not distinguish blind from deaf or any other trait. It says we are to treat each other as we wish to be treated. Wosie and her friends just show how that rule can be adapted to various situations” Rose self-published the first Wosie book and it can be purchased on Amazon, Alibris as well as at www.luvwosie.com. She is looking for funding to self-publish the remaining six books. “Finding a publisher is very difficult. I know these stories resonate with all people of all ages. While I look for a publisher I am setting up a Go Fund Me account to help with the self-publishing costs. The books are like Wosie. They need a little help. I am certain my Bobo is out there!” smiled Rose. To purchase the book or learn more about Rose visit www.luvwosie.com

Dogs Belong Inside! R.I.P. Summer
T
he small Silky Terrier ran down the hot dusty road desperately trying to find water. She didn’t know why her humans left her. Her throat was parched from thirst, and her body ached with pain. The dog came to a used car lot at the corner of Dillon and Palm Drive in Desert Hot Springs where she sought refuge underneath a car, but the scorching sand beneath her paws raised her body temperature even higher. It was Saturday, August 15, and the Southern California heat wave was sending brutal temperatures of 119 degrees to the Coachella Valley. Ironically, it was International Homeless Animals Day, but there was no relief from the intense desert sun for this suffering homeless Terrier. Animal advocates were alerted to the dog’s plight. Jo Venegas-Cebrun contacted local resident Cathie Coats who rushed to the site. She crawled underneath the car, but announced the devastating news that the dog was deceased. Coats recalls, “I was heartbroken, this dog is the face of neglect, this dog is the face of what heat does to animals.” The Silky Terrier was another sad casualty in the battle to save homeless animals. Under the car where she sought
shade became her final resting place. Jo Venegas-Cebrun heard the tragic news, but wanted to pay tribute to the dog she named Summer. This dedicated “rescue warrior” drove to Desert Hot Springs to retrieve Summer’s body, determined the Terrier would receive the love and dignity she may not have known in her short life. Jo took the dog to a pet crematorium, and plans to

by Janet McAfee bury her ashes in a location where she will be remembered. Summer’s death and photographs went viral on Facebook, with many sad and angry comments posted from animal lovers. She was featured on KESQ televised news. A Facebook page “In Memory of Summer” was created in the hope her legacy might spare other dogs from this tragedy. Rescuers gathered in memory of the little dog they never knew. Undoubtedly, other outdoor dogs suffered and perished from this week’s heat wave without any public notice. Why do some owners keep their dogs outside? Some people were raised by parents whose admonition, “Dogs belong outside” still rings in their subconscious. Others grew up on farms where animals were routinely kept outside and used to herd livestock. Their country of origin may be one where keeping animals outside is common practice. Other dog owners may need assistance with housetraining, information they can obtain online. Summer’s legacy will be to convince more folks that our blazing summers make having “backyard only” dogs unacceptable in the Coachella Valley. Overheating can result in irreversible kidney, heart, liver and brain damage. Dogs cannot sweat the way we humans do, as their only sweat glands are

in their nose and on the pads of their feet. When they walk on hot sand or concrete, their temperature can rise dangerously. Flat nosed breeds such as Pugs and Boxers, elderly dogs, and young puppies are at greatest risk. Imagine being thirsty and drinking out of a scalding hot water bowl. Imagine being a social, loving creature, and spending endless days isolated with no other living being. What can you do to continue Summer’s legacy? Under California penal code section 597, it is illegal to keep a dog chained or tethered for longer than 3 hours a day. Dog owners must provide shelter from direct intense sunlight. Talk to the people you know who think outdoor dog ownership is okay, but you will only put them on the defensive if you come across in an accusatory manner. Calmly ask them why their dog is always outside. Provide them information on heat stroke. To start off, suggest they get a baby gate and keep their dog in a kitchen or laundry room during the hot days. Provide them with washable puppy pads to make the transition. Tell them what happened to Summer. Meanwhile, enjoy the companionship and unconditional love your best canine friend provides INSIDE YOUR HOME! Jmcafee7@verizon.net

Wine uring Funthese in the Sun long summer months,
D
I know most of us try to get out of Dodge when we can—some for spurts, some take the summer off. For those here today and almost exasperated due to the mean heat, we’ve got some pleasant wine news to speak of. But first: While settling down to read the Health Section in last week’s Desert Sun, I took a quick glance at the front page, titled, “A Toast to Fitness—Hiking plus wine hits the spot”, winced and spoke out loud, “Really!?? As John McEnroe would say, “You can’t be serious!” How many times do we hear about hikers and tourists hiking in our local hills and mountains fainting and falling over from heat exhaustion and/or dehydration? Resident newscasters are all over the tube warning us to practically carry our weight in water when taking any type of jaunt up the hill. (I know—I know, quickly into the Desert Sun article, we find out they’re talking about hiking up in the Santa Cruz mountains—but let’s run with this facetious juxtaposition for a bit.) First off—incredulously, there are some wine lovers out there who practice white wine abstinence—and there’s nothing we can do. Believe me, no matter how I attempt to woo them with some of the greatest white wines in the world, they are ever reluctant! “Read and moisten our lips—No White Wine!” They won’t even look down the white wine aisle in the store! So what about this group of mountain hiker/vino rosso enthusiasts who are taking their wine pouches up the climb in triple digit heat! Hey—I can appreciate the dense, raspberry jammy, mocha, full-bodied Opolo Vineyards Mountain Zinfandel that carries 16.3 % alcohol, but are we taking that big boy up a cliff on a hot afternoon? I don’t think so. For those who can’t put away the vino no matter what, and incredibly still shying from thirst quenching H2O or an ice-cold beer, let me recommend a couple of succulent wines that will keep you from dehydrating and wilting away. We’ve covered some really thirst quenching wines this summer, especially the Sauvignon Blancs and un-oaked Chardonnays. However, if someone were to put a pistol to our heads and severely insist that we must take a wine up the summit in August, then I plead with you guys to carry up a Vinho Verde. (And of course we’re having fun here on our hikes; we’re all drinking lots of water. The wine and beer is chilling back home.) Really—Coachella Valley in our long and hot summer should simply adopt the Vinho Verde wine as the wine of choice. Light, low-alcohol, tangy, fresh, crisp, with tiny spritz-y bubbles that can turn a hot day into a pleasurable quaffing hot day. Vinho Verde [VEE-nyoh Vair-deh] is both the name of the region and the wine that
comes from the extreme northwest of Portugal that faces the Atlantic Ocean. It’s cool and very rainy, and the entire area is like one single green garden. I guess that’s where the wine gets its name. And all the green rainy nature of what this wine is about, could well keep us sane in the midst of a hot drought. Here the price is right: The decorative bottle, Gazela Vinho Verde, $6, is what we’d call an “entry-level” wine—so reasonably priced, it behooves the uninitiated to buy a bottle just to see how good it is. Light, fresh and straightforward with floral and lemon aromas and flavors, the wine is available at most markets. So after one realizes how this wine handles the hot day, the wine enthusiast may wish to taste a Vinho Verde that’s a bit more up-scale and carries a bit more complexity. Here Vera Vinho Verde $10 is the ticket with its fresh and lively quaff of citrus flavors, stone fruit, and a lingering mineral finish. Sangria is again the talk-of-the-town. Indeed! Sangria is caliente in the whole USA. And like it or not it’s being bottled!
“We think bottled sangria is the next big thing in wine”, says Peter Deutsch CEO of Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits Co. Wine Spectator magazine has reported, “The four leading bottled sangria brands grew 43 percent in the U.S. from 2010 to 2013. Yellow Tail Sangria expects to sell more than 200 percent more cases just this year. Gallo’s “Madria” sangria brand grew from 305,500 cases in 2010 to over 470,000 cases last year.” Eppa Sangria is the Deutsch product made organic that includes pomegranate, blueberry, Mediterranean Blood Orange, and açaí palm fruit.
Remember old school sangria? A wine punch made with left-over dry red (or white) wine with slices of oranges, lemons, peaches, and maybe pineapple, limes, apples and berries along with some brandy and/or orange liqueur that’s all put into a pitcher and chilled in the fridge overnight. It’s not a lot of work, but it just can’t be made at the last minute. And just before serving, a little spritz is added (sparkling or tonic water, 7-up, or even ginger ale) along with ice. If you’re making this punch yourself, the beauty of the drink is that there is no exact recipe. There is not a standard wine for sangria. However, if you’d like to make one in tune with Spanish tradition, use the reasonably priced Garnacha (Grenache) or find another medium-bodied red wine. For white sangria, pick a zesty and/or aromatic white wine such as Torrontés, Chenin Blanc, Riesling or Pinot Gris, and add any kind of fruit to garnish. Stay Cool! & Cheers!

or many, a satisfying narrative must consist of set-up, confrontation, climax and resolution. Readers who seek to relate to characters and understand the nature of the dilemmas they face, may find Amelia Gray’s Gutshot (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 224 pages) not so straightforward or traditional. These strange, twisted and demented short stories may make some readers uncomfortable. But if you desire an experience where your senses are provoked and your mind is poked, I guarantee these 37 tales will take you to places you have never been. The book is divided into five sections. If there is a reason for the demarcations, it is not obvious. But these chapter-breaks offer relief and time for contemplation as you exit one crazy world and enter another. “Monument” tells the story of a small community that gets together for a cleaningbee at the local cemetery. Town’s people mow, mulch and weed the grass, polish headstones and trim the trees. When one man accidently chips a granite monument, everyone’s work comes to a stop. They gather for a look at the damage. A relative of the engraved name, comes forward to inspect the porous granite, touching the exposed, raw stone. After he backs off, the man takes another swing at the

“gutshot” By Amelia Gray Stories marker, and another, and another until the whole community is hacking away at all the headstones and monuments in the cemetery. “Fifty Ways To Eat Your Lover” is a list of methods to punish the man in your life. There are suggestions for eating him whether he brings home a puppy, says he’s in love with you or if he kissed another. Ideas include grating his knuckles, pulling out his hair for garnish and frying his foreskin. The title story “Gutshot” is about a man who is shot in the gut. The shooter regrets his actions and the gutshot man drives himself to the doctor. The doctor has forgotten how to treat gunshot wounds and takes the gutshot man to his mother’s house. The mother worries that “Woe” has descended upon them all. When the gutshot man yells, “Jesus Christ, I’m gutshot,” Jesus shows up. Jesus jokes with the man, and tells him he loves him and the shooter, then offers His help. “Viscera” is about a paper-maker who works on an assembly line and is plagued with
skin infections and illnesses. Everyday his skin, sweat or snot falls into the mill and becomes mixed with the paper. His DNA may possibly be on the very page of Gray’s book that tells this story! “House Proud” is the story of an alcoholic mother who raised her daughter the best she could. Now obese and on oxygen, her grown daughter takes care of her mom, but often does not show up for a week. The daughter convinces her mother to go on a trip with her to meet her lover. The two bond at a burned-out house in the middle of nowhere, where they literally taste the ashes of their lives. There are many memorable stories in Gutshot: “House Heart” is about a couple who have a sex-slave who lives in their ductwork; “Thank You” tells of two friends who try to out-do each other with thank you notes; and “Date Night” turns into a feast of human depravity at a fine restaurant. Bizarre as these stories are, they are incredibly compelling vignettes. Many of the tales are humorous, sly and involve bodily fluids. What’s exactly going on in this collection is often elusive no matter how many times it’s reread. Like inkblots, these tales are open for psychological interpretation. The common denominator in Gutshot is the desperation and intensity of the characters. It is what makes the narrative so visceral. After all, we are emotional creatures
City of Palm Springs Significantly Reduces Municipal Water Usage by 43 Percent

alm Springs is leading the way in the Coachella Valley when it comes to water conservation. In response to one of the most severe droughts in California history and a call to action to reduce water usage from Gov. Jerry Brown, the City of Palm Springs is pleased to announce municipal water consumption throughout the city in local parks and municipal buildings like Palm Springs International Airport, the Palm Springs Public Library, Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort, the Animal Shelter and Palm Springs City Hall has been reduced by an impressive 43 percent, exceeding the state mandate of 36 percent. In February 2014, Mayor Steve Pougnet and the City Council requested City Staff begin implementing a comprehensive citywide Strategic Water Conservation Plan with key steps that include watering parks and medians every other day, watering in the evening hours, aggressively monitoring and replacing broken sprinkler heads and the implementation of a new citywide radio controlled irrigation system. In addition, the city recently renovated the Tahquitz Canyon Way median into a drought tolerant desertscape and continues to use reclaimed water at Demuth Park, Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort and the Palm Springs Animal Shelter.

The City of Palm Springs Office of Sustainability has also played a key role in successful conservation efforts, partnering with Desert Water Agency to install smart irrigation control devices in residences throughout Palm Springs and offering a popular Lawn Buyback Incentive Program along with a host of residential and business giveaway programs for low-flow toilets, faucet aerators and water efficient appliances.

“For several years now, the City of Palm Springs has been committed to leading the way in water conservation and we are exceeding Governor Brown’s call to action by continually practicing and promoting water saving strategies that benefit both residents and businesses,” said Pougnet, who notes that without the hard work of the Sustainability Commission, the One-PS Neighborhood Involvement Committee and City Staff, the successful implementation of a comprehensive Strategic Water Conservation Plan could not have been accomplished.
no matter where we reside – on this planet and in our heads. As readers, we search text for meaning, insight and wisdom. Metaphor or allegory, fable or parable, Gutshot may be all these things -- or none. Clearly, the author leaves that up to you. Gray is fearless. In these short stories, she denies literary conventions and allows her characters the freedom to have unhindered, unhinged and uninhibited lives. Author Gray is certainly not afraid to write from her gut.
NEWS
“I challenged City Staff, the Desert Water Agency and the Palm Springs community to reduce water usage by 25 percent and I am pleased to say our city has responded like no place else in the Coachella Valley,” said Pougnet. “However, there is still more to accomplish and I ask every Palm Springs resident to continue taking this challenge seriously. Our future water supply relies on it.” For more information, about water conservation efforts in Palm Springs, visit www.watermattersps.com

MON AUGUST 24
PICK OF THE WEEK: STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON Director F. Gary Gray’s NWA biopic is old-fashioned story telling disguised as a dangerous, contemporary urban drama with music. No, it’s not a musical, but it does advocates a street-smart brio with classic underdog empathy. A sophisticated visceral energy permeates the film. In some places it’s a celebration of the power and beauty of pure cinema. What’s not to like? The solid cast gives urgency and a welcome charismatic presence to this lively, edgy and hyper-relevant story that does not

shrink from vivid recreations of a militarized police presence that – based on recent events -- we recognize as all too true. I’m not a big fan of gangster rap, but am sympathetic to many of the emotions and issues embedded in the music -- and culture. Around 30 years ago (yes, it’s been that long), the streets of Compton suddenly became notorious around the world thanks to five young men of the ‘hood, urban poets really, who gave voice to their experience – especially regarding their victimization by police. Their group, N.W.A, ignited a cultural war. But it was their music that was literally revolutionary on many levels beyond pop culture. They rode the rollercoaster of fame as they crudely, bluntly, articulated their brutal experiences and expressed their fierce anger. This compelling and powerful film is not merely a vivid chronicle of the birth of a rap group, but that of an entirely new music genre. I got a kick out of the wide publicity generated by the “news” that police were providing “security” at theaters. Nice touch by a brilliant studio publicist, but the reality is this film does not flame anger: it instead offers a sympathetic perspective on greater human issues that cross racial boundaries. Recommended.
Susanna Clarke’s 2004 brilliant bestselling first novel as adapted by Peter Harness for BBC One is a beautifully crafted and engaging fantasy that does justice to the well-regarded novel. The core story begins around 1806 during the Napoleonic Wars. It centers on two rival 19th century magicians who live in a recognizable -- but alternate – history. It’s not long before mentor and apprentice become rivals. The strong visuals and effects seduce the viewer into an impressively dangerous world of Dickensian drama with more than just a supernatural veneer -- the implications of which are staggering. At issue is what happens when English magic is revived after a 300-year absence? And of course, who controls it? The two leads -- Eddie Marsan is the, gloomy reclusive traditionalist Norrell and Bertie Carvel is the daring progressive Strange – are just about perfect. Out of necessity, much has been cut from Clarke’s complex 846 page epic adventure. But Marsan and Carvel carry the drama splendidly in this seven-hour adaptation. This is the best mini-series I’ve seen on a long time. It’s Harry Potter for grown ups. Enjoy this perfect binge-watching treat during these blistering days of summer. Watchable extras include surprising deleted scenes. BBC Home Entertainment. Blu-ray.
Author Jo Rowling is rich and famous. She has nothing to prove, yet she continues to write stories that she apparently cannot keep inside. Her first adult novel has been nicely adapted for a three part HBO series. It’s set in the picture perfect sunlit English village of Pagford – a place that conceals a shadowy soul. The wonderful ensemble cast inhabits the deceptive, controlling lives of key villagers after an unexpected councilman’s death leaves a “casual vacancy.” At issue is whether or not a rich local couple can turn Sweetlove House into a ritzy spa, thus eliminating it as a school and methadone clinic. We have the delicious pleasure of watching the power plays as questionable candidates fight for the empty seat as the village’s moral compass spins out of control. I thought of Thomas Hardy more than once as the dark, sometimes comic drama unfolded. (I wondered if this is what an episode of “Midsomer Murders” would’ve been like had Hardy written it.) I loved the unscrupulous but sweet-faced villains. Make no mistake, there’s unmitigated greed and real evil in Pagford -- and it is universal. Some fans of the book were disappointed at the “revised” ending of the TV adaptation. But author Rowling said she “cried her eyes out” and praised the slightly happier ending and the production team that created it. Recommended. HBO/Warner Bros. Blu-ray. robinesimmons@aol.com

ith the high temperature recorded last weekend in the Coachella Valley, you might be interested to know that we have a ways to go to reach the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth. That happened on September 13, 2012 in Libya when it reached 136 degrees. As we reach our highest temperatures of the year, school is back in session. Here in California, approximately 6.7 million students between the ages of 5 and 17 or 17.6% of our state’s population will go back to school over the next few weeks. All but 460,000 of these students will use the public school system. The first public school was founded in 1635 in Boston. It wasn’t until 1870 that all states had free elementary schools making the United States the most literate society in the world. Currently, the United States is the 15th most literate country in the world. The first public high school was founded in Boston in 1820. In 1851, Massachusetts was the first state to make education compulsory in order to help immigrants become “civilized”. If you ask high schoolers, most would say that school would be more civilized with a later start time. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) agrees and
has recommended that high school start no earlier than 8:30am. The later start time is needed because biological rhythms shift during puberty causing adolescents to go to sleep later at night and therefore need to sleep later in the morning. The AAP found that the failure of high schoolers to get enough sleep leads to numerous problems such as obesity, depression, poorer grades and other aberrant behaviors. The best thing that parents can do to try to combat the sleep deprivation problem experienced by most high schoolers is to limit access to smartphones, computers and television at night so as to help their children get eight hours of sleep every night. Eighty percent of California high schoolers can be expected to graduate within four years. This is an all-time high. The highest graduation rates are amongst
those identifying as Asian (92.3%), Filipino (92.1%) and Caucasian (87.4%). The lowest graduation rates are in the Black (68.1%), Native American (70.1%) and Hispanic (76.4%) communities. California ranks as the 27th best school system in terms of student scores on standardized testing versus the rest of the country. Massachusetts is ranked #1. The highest rated public high school in the Coachella Valley was Palm Desert High School where three in ten students graduate ready for college - 20% higher than the national average. Only 30 years ago, the United States had the highest rankings in the world for the quality and quantity of high school graduates. The United States currently ranks 36th in the world. More specifically, the U.S. ranks 24th in math, 21st in science, 15th in literacy and 12th in college degrees for adults between 25-34 years of age. This school year, there will be 7,000 high school dropouts every day and equates to 1.2 million people a year. If these same young adults completed high school, they would have earned an additional $260,000 over the course of their lifetimes. According to the National Center for Education, the average high school dropout earns $360 a week. Those with high school as their highest degree earn $537/week, college grads $985/week and those with advanced
safety tips degrees like MBAs or Ph.Ds earn $1,435/ week. U.S. manufacturers were recently polled and stated that 40% of all 17 year-olds have the math skills and 60% of the reading skills necessary to hold down a job. When we consider our slipping global rankings and the fact that the majority of high school graduates do not have the skills required for manufacturing or college, we have to ask ourselves if there is a better way to educate our youth and prepare them and our country for tomorrow. chool has already or soon will be starting for many of our school districts. Our First Class should be “School Safety” says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. First Class: Did you know that It is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. Did you know school buses use yellow flashing lights to alert motorists that they are preparing to stop to load or unload children. Red flashing lights and an extended stop sign arm signals to motorists that the bus is stopped and children are getting on or off the bus. The area 10 feet around a school bus is where children are in the most danger of being hit. Stop your car far enough from the bus to allow children the necessary space to safely enter and exit the bus. Be alert as children are unpredictable. Children walking to or from their
bus are usually very comfortable with their surroundings. This makes them more likely to take risks, ignore hazards, or fail to look both ways when crossing the street. Drivers should not block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn. Do not stop with a portion of your vehicle over the crosswalk. In a school zone when a warning flasher or flashers are blinking, you must stop to yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a marked crosswalk or at an intersection with no marked crosswalk. Take extra care to look out for children not only in school zones, but also in residential areas, playgrounds, and parks. ATTORNEY REVEALS SECRETS OF WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE DYING ast week we learned about Wills and that that was to get the car would get nothing. This return is located. is because it was a Specific Bequest of the car not money. 8 KEY THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR DOCUMENTS: 1. KNOW where your testamentary documents are located: Where are the Wills, Trusts, Insurance Policies, Health Care Directives and Power of Attorney forms located? Know how to access them. If they are in a safe deposit box, do you know where it is located? Do you have access? Do you know where the key is located? 2. KNOW your professionals: Who are the attorneys who created these documents? Who are your accountants? Know how to access them so that you can seek their advice. Make a list with the name, address, phone number and email of your Lawyer, CPA, Stockbroker and Financial Advisor for starts. 3. KNOW where the documents concerning your properties are located: Know where the deeds to your properties are located, as well as the location of the purchase documents, escrow documents, loan and refinance documents. Your tax basis for these properties is an important piece of information and that can only be determined from these documents. 4. KNOW where your ownership certificates are, as well as other documents of acquisition and title, to personal property. 5. KNOW where your tax returns are and where the backup information for the current

with a Holographic will you can write the Will in your own handwriting on a plain piece of paper....and it is legal. However it is probably not the best advice. I also shared last week that my favorite saying was People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan! This goes for everything from a Will and a Health Care Directive to having the phone number of a plumber, electrician, doctor and attorney by your phone so that when you need to get help you do not have to look while you are panicked. I am often asked: Do I Need Estate Planning? You do! Age, gender, marriage or domestic partner/ divorced; straight or gay we all want to take care of our loved ones at our death. However you must also take care to ensure your well-being throughout your life, in sickness and in health. Do you have an Estate Plan? UNLESS YOU TAKE THE TIME now to prepare an estate plan then at your DEATH, what you have may not go to the people to whom you want it to go. Your estate could wind up in such a mess that neither you, during your life, nor your loved ones after your death, will be adequately taken care of. Without a will/trust the money will pass on by the Intestate laws of the State of California. I explained last week: If you had a classic car worth $1,000,000 and left it to son A and a million in cash and left it to son B and if the car was sold before you passed away, then the son

of a married person, all of the decedent’s community property may pass to the surviving spouse without full probate 5. Summary Proceeding: There are also means of setting aside Small Estates. 6. Pay on Death Accounts: Also, there are a number of types of bank accounts, such as “A POD account” (sometimes called a Trustee Account or a Totten Trust), which allows you to avoid the problems of both Probate and coownership. 7. The Living Trust: And, of course, the other way to avoid a Probate is by the use of a LIVING TRUST. I suggest all our Coachella Valley Weekly readers contact their attorney to look into this for your family. If you do not have one please call me at 760 341 4411. Remember unless you want your estate plan to kick on right away. When you drink don’t get behind the wheel and be involved in an auto accident (whether it is your fault or not) or get arrested for a DUI…I don’t need the extra business....and you do not want your estate planning to take affect NOW. DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE, CALL A TAXI OR UBER…IT IS A LOT CHEAPER THAN CALLING ME If you have any questions regarding this column or ideas for future columns please contact Dale Gribow at 760 837-7500 or dale@ dalegribowlaw.com

ow that we have football back, you can rest your weary eyes on this column to catch the nuggets of info, stats and facts that make the NFL so fascinating every week. I call it: Jules From The Gridiron. I used to air it on my radio show every day, and I introduced the segment with a British accent to make it seem more dramatic and intelligent. But I’m no longer on radio (just rolling steady on KMIR, NBC TV) and thus, can’t feign drama or intelligence. So it is what it is. Here we go… If you see me around town and I look like I need a hug, it’s because I just watched the new-look San Francisco 49ers and I do need a hug. That’s my team and I tried to be strong as Patrick Willis and Chris Borland retired. I tried to stay optimistic as Justin Smith and Anthony Davis made the same decision. But when Aldon Smith chose to do whatever it was he chose to do that earned him an audience with Santa Clara police, the Niners had no choice to cut him. So when they faced the Houston Texans, that ‘mighty juggernaut of an offense’ (hoping you picked up on my sarcasm) and allowed, for the first time in Texans history, every quarterback who took snaps to finish
with a passer rating of 100+, there’s serious cause for concern. The formerly powerful pass rush looked more like grown men playing patty-cake. Sure they are still figuring out how to replace Smith, but that’s not a chapter in the handbook Jim Harbaugh left behind for Jim Tomsula, that’s going to take time. We haven’t seen the new-look offense yet, so I’ll reserve any opinions on Jarryd Hayne and Colin Kaepernick until we get more information, but that defense is going to struggle until Navarro Bowman is back to fully being himself.
Speaking of defense, Matt Schaub and Michael Campanaro beat Rob Ryan’s defense when the Balitmore Ravens faced the New Orleans Saints. Badly. Ryan might have great hair, but he’s the most overrated coordinator in the NFL. In fact, the last guy in the NFL whose hair I even noticed was Curtis Painter when he played for the Colts in 2011. The team went 2-14 that year. The best thing about it was Painter’s long blond mane. Ryan’s defense would do the same if it weren’t for Drew Brees as the Saints quarterback. Take a deep breathe now, the Raiders are good. At football. Their win over the Rams was solid. Obviously some things improved,
but overall, the Rams look like they have a mediocre coach at the helm while the Raiders, for the first time since John Gruden, have a coach that’s not a rookie HC. The best news out of San Diego was the new deal for Philip Rivers. He can finally afford to have more kids now and his plan to procreate enough to field a team might come true. Julie Buehler hosted the Coachella Valley’s most popular sports talk radio show, “Buehler’s Day Off” every day for 3 years, but now she can be exclusively seen on KMIR sharing the coolest stories in sports. She’s an avid gym rat, slightly sarcastic and more likely to recite Steve Young’s career passing stats than American Idol winners. Tune in to KMIR’s nightly news or KMIR.com for her sports reports.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY Week of August 20
ARIES (March 21-April 19): You’d probably prefer to stay in the romantic, carefree state of mind. But from what I can tell, you’re ripe for a new phase of your long-term cycle. Your freestyle rambles and jaunty adventures should now make way for careful introspection and thoughtful adjustments. Instead of restless star-gazing, I suggest patient earthgazing. Despite how it may initially appear, it’s not a comedown. In fact, I see it as an unusual reward that will satisfy you in unexpected ways. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In accordance with the current astrological omens, I recommend the following activities: Sing a love song at least once a day. Seek a message from an ancestor in a reverie or dream. Revisit your three favorite childhood memories. Give a gift or blessing to the wildest part of you. Swim naked in a river, stream, or lake. Change something about your home to make it more sacred and mysterious. Obtain a symbolic object or work of art that stimulates your courage to be true to yourself. Find relaxation and renewal in the deep darkness. Ruminate in unbridled detail about how you will someday fulfill a daring fantasy. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The ancient Greek epic poem the *Iliad* is one of the foundation works of Western literature. Written in the eighth century BCE, it tells the story of the ten-year-long Trojan War. The cause of the conflict was the kidnap of Helen of Troy, reputed to be the world’s most beautiful woman. And yet nowhere in the *Iliad* is there a description of Helen’s beauty. We hear no details about why she deserves to be at the center of the legendary saga. Don’t be like the *Iliad* in the coming weeks, Gemini. Know everything you can about the goal at the center of your life. Be very clear and specific and precise about what you’re fighting for and working towards. CANCER (June 21-July 22): The comedian puppets known as the Muppets have made eight movies. In *The Great Muppet Caper,* the muppets Kermit and Fozzie play brothers, even though one is a green frog and the other a brown bear. At one point in the story, we see a photo of their father, who has the coloring and eyes of Kermit, but a bearlike face. I bring up their unexpected relationship, Cancerian, because I suspect that a similar anomaly might be coming your way: a bond with a seemingly improbable ally. To prepare, stretch your ideas about what influences you might want to connect with. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): English author Barbara Cartland published her first novel at age 21. By the time she died 77 years later, she had written more than 700 other books. Some sources say she sold 750 million copies, while others put the estimate at two billion. In 1983 alone, she churned out 23 novels. I foresee a Barbara Cartland-type period for you in the coming months, Leo. Between now and your birthday in 2016, I expect you to be as fruitful in your own field as you have ever been. And here’s the weird thing: One of the secrets of your productivity will be an enhanced ability to chill out. “Relaxed intensity” will be your calming battle cry. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): ‘’On or about December 1910, human character changed,’’ wrote English author Virginia Woolf in 1924. What prompted her to draw that conclusion? The rapidly increasing availability of electricity, cars, and indoor plumbing? The rise of the women’s suffrage movement? Labor unrest and the death of the King? The growing prominence of experimental art by Cezanne, Gauguin, Matisse, and Picasso? The answer might be all of the above, plus the beginning of a breakdown in the British class system. Inspired by the current astrological omens, I’ll borrow her brash spirit and make a new prediction: During the last 19 weeks of 2015, the destiny of the Virgo tribe will undergo a fundamental shift. Ten years from now, I bet you will look back at this time and say, “That was when everything got realigned, redeemed, and renewed.” LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “The greatest and most important problems of life are all in a certain sense insoluble,” said psychologist Carl Jung. “They can

never be solved, but only outgrown.” I subscribe to that model of dealing with dilemmas, and I hope you will consider it, too -- especially in light of the fact that from now until July 2016 you will have more power than ever before to outgrow two of your biggest problems. I don’t guarantee that you will transcend them completely, but I’m confident you can render them at least 60 percent less pressing, less imposing, and less restricting. And 80 percent is quite possible. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Hundreds of years ago, Hawaiians celebrated an annual holiday called Makahiki. It began in early November and lasted four months. No one worked very much for the duration. There were nonstop feasts and games and religious ceremonies. Community-building was a featured theme, and one taboo was strictly enforced: no war or bloodshed. I encourage you Scorpios to enjoy a similar break from your daily fuss. Now is an especially propitious time to ban conflict, contempt, revenge, and sabotage as you cultivate solidarity in the groups that are important for your future. You may not be able to make your own personal Makahiki last for four months, but could you at least manage three weeks? SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the Museum of Failed Products is a warehouse full of consumer goods that companies created but no one wanted to buy. It includes caffeinated beer, yogurt shampoo, fortune cookies for dogs, and breath mints that resemble vials of crack cocaine. The most frequent visitors to the museum are executives seeking to educate themselves about what errors to avoid in their own companies’ future product development. I encourage you to be inspired by this place, Sagittarius. Take an inventory of the wrong turns you’ve made in the past. Use what you learn to create a revised master plan. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” Virtually all of us have been guilty of embodying that well-worn adage. And according to my analysis of the astrological omens, quite a few of you Capricorns are currently embroiled in this behavior pattern. But I am happy to report that the coming weeks will be a favorable time to quit your insanity cold turkey. In fact, the actions you take to escape this bad habit could empower you to be done with it forever. Are you ready to make a heroic effort? Here’s a good way to begin: Undo your perverse attraction to the stressful provocation that has such a seductive hold on your imagination. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “Everything I’ve ever let go of has claw marks on it,” confessed the late, great author David Foster Wallace. Does that describe your experience, too? If so, events in the coming months will help you break the pattern. More than at any other time in the last ten years, you will have the power to liberate yourself through surrender. You will understand how to release yourself from overwrought attachment through love and grace rather than through stress and force. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “Most people love in order to lose themselves,” wrote Hermann Hesse in his novel *Demian.* But there are a few, he implied, who actually *find* themselves through love. In the coming months, Pisces, you are more likely to be one of those rare ones. In fact, I don’t think it will even be possible for you to use love as a crutch. You won’t allow it to sap your power or make you forget who you are. That’s good news, right? Here’s the caveat: You must be ready and willing to discover much more about the true nature of your deepest desires -- some of which may be hidden from you right now. Homework: Were you told there’s a certain accomplishment you’ll never be capable of? Ready to prove that curse wrong? Testify at FreeWillAstrology.com. Dancing to the Beat of Your Own Drum
T
hinking about opening your own business but uneasy about taking the plunge? The plight of an entrepreneur is nothing less than a roller coaster. The highs are exhilarating but someone once described the lows like “dancing backward through quicksand.” Leaving the corporate pack and going it alone is indeed a challenge. Why is it that some individuals prefer striking out on their own? Multiple reasons including the freedom to dance to the beat of your own drum. I recently interviewed a trio of women clients about what motivates them to enter the world of entrepreneurship. Ellen, who has freelanced for the past 25 years, states she loves the freedom and flexibility but realistically admits “there is the price of the unknown as far as when and where work comes from and no paid benefits.” A true believer in flying solo, her final word on the subject is: “I would not do it differently.” My client Irma recently decided to explore unchartered territory. A few months ago she left a prominent executive level position with a firm she was with for 15 years to start a new company. Irma is unafraid to dream and certainly no stranger to hard work. I have no doubts about her success. When questioned about taking a risk, Irma quipped, “You cannot
get where you want to be if you’re standing still.” Dominique, who is embarking on launching another business to add to her already successful entrepreneurial portfolio, got her first taste of running a business five years ago. Undaunted by job loss, Dom and her husband moved to the Coachella Valley and opened a computer repair business. She believes in their new venture so wholeheartedly Dom says, “I’d be willing to gamble the security of a great job to start out on my own!” Striking out on your own is life changing Dom advised. “When you say, I have an idea, what you are really saying is, I want to change the world. Everything around us starts as an idea. Sometimes you believe in an idea so much that you’re willing to risk everything to make it happen and change a little piece of the world.” Have a business idea niggling at the back of your mind? In his new book, “The Entrepreneur Roller Coaster” Darren Hardy, publisher of Success Magazine advises now is “the time to take the ride.” Remember, vision without action is nothing more than a fairy tale. Like Dominique, Irma and Ellen you may find entrepreneurship will take you exactly where you want to be. Sunny Simon is the owner of Raise the Bar High Life and Career Coaching. Health&Fitness by chris clemens Early Bird Registration for 2nd Annual Y Be Fit Palm Desert Challenge Ends August 31
F
amily YMCA of the Desert’s 2nd Annual Y Be Fit Palm Desert Challenge will be held on Sunday, October 4, giving runners, walkers, and tri-athletes the opportunity exercise while having fun and raising money for youth programs in the Valley. The event takes place again this year at the beautiful Palm Desert Civic Center Park. The triple event day is designed for participants of varying skill levels, from recreational enthusiasts to advanced athletes. For the more serious athlete a Reverse Mini-Triathlon includes a 5K run, a 10-mile bike ride, and lastly a 300-meter swim at the Palm Desert Aquatic Center. New this year is the Reverse Mini-Tri Relay for groups with a maximum of three participants. The 5K Walk/ Run, and 1K Color Run are great options for a less competitive experience, and for even simply enjoying the camaraderie and exercise. Following the finish of the Reverse MiniTriathlon, a Health and Wellness Fair features vendor and information booths, entertainment, and activities for all ages. In addition to participants in the event, the public is also invited to attend the fair from 7 to 11:00 a.m. “Last year’s inaugural Y Be Fit Palm Desert Challenge was embraced by the community and resulted in not only an enjoyable event for families and individuals alike, but raised over $18,000 to support the YMCA’s important youth programs held throughout the Valley,” said Sabby Jonathan, YMCA Trustee. “Plus, last year’s first-time triathlon participants appreciated the swim portion taking place
as the last activity, and we expect to attract additional first-timers considering this format.” Early Bird registration is open through August. Fees for the Reverse Mini-Triathlon are $60, which increases to $75 from Sept. 1- Oct. 3 and $90 on race day; the Reverse Mini-Tri Relay is $80, increasing to $95 Sept. 1 – Oct. 3, and $110 on race day; and the 5K Run/Walk is $30, increasing to $35 Sept. 1- Oct.3 and $40 on race day. Registration for the 1K Color Run is just $10, while YMCA members can participate in the 1K walk/run for just $5 when registering prior to the event; or event day registration costs $15 for either. The Palm Desert Civic Center Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the Coachella Valley and is the hub of the Y Be Fit Palm Desert Challenge races and activities. The park offers the perfect setting for the event and is also home to the Family YMCA of the Desert and the Palm Desert Aquatic Center. This fundraiser benefits Family YMCA of the Desert supporting youth programs, and is sponsored by the City of Palm Desert, Klein/ Clark, Burrtec, FG Creative, CV Weekly, Embassy Suites Palm Desert, The Printing Place, Prime Time, Costco Wholesale, Whole Foods Market, 1st Bank, Kaminsky Productions, Rubio’s, VIP Promotional Services, Team 1010 KXPS, Money Radio 1200, Crush 103.9, 93.7 KCLB, The Eagle 106.9, KNEWS 94.3, and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
