COMIC CON PALM SPRINGS PLANS GRANDTHE MAN BEHIND MARVEL WILL CUT THE OPENING CEREMONY WITH STAN LEE RIBBON TO KICK OFF THE BIG EVENT.

tan Lee is famous for his work with a pencil, but Palm Springs is about to find out how he handles giant scissors! The iconic graphic artist and president and chairman of Marvel Comics will be front and center at a ribbon-cutting scheduled to signal the start of the highly anticipated event. The ceremony will take place on Friday, August 26, at 4 p.m., at the main doors of the Palm Springs Convention Center in front of the Oasis 1 hall. Lee’s big snip will only be the start of the excitement this weekend in Palm Springs. The area’s very first comic con will feature artists, cosplayers, “The Incredible
Hulk” Lou Ferrigno, and more. “This is literally history in the making,” said Christopher Spellman, Founder and Executive Producer of Comic Con Palm Springs. “It’s Palm Springs’s first comic con, and Stan Lee – the legend himself – is personally cutting the ribbon to inaugurate the opening. FROM FALLING SKIES TO “PRISON RAMEN:” DAREDEVIL’S PETER SHINKODA
T
he inaugural Comic Con Palm Springs is about to launch August 26-28th at the Palm Springs Convention Center! This will be an incredible opportunity to geek out and be with Stan Lee, the Incredible Hulk, James Hong, Bob Gunton, Elpidia Carrillo, Holly Payne, Fred Williamson, Kellie Gerardi, a young woman selected to be one of the first one hundred people to colonize Mars and guaranteed fanboy favorite, Peter Shinkoda! Many will know Peter as Dai from Steven Spielberg’s hit TV show Falling Skies or most recently as Nobu from the Netflix’s series Daredevil. Whether you come for the art, the costumes, the film screenings, the insightful panels or just to see if you favorite celebrity is actually human, Comic Con Palm Springs is set to be an event to remember! I recently had the honor of meeting up with actor Peter Shinkoda at his home in Los Angeles to discuss the upcoming Con, film projects and the state of race in Hollywood representation. Things got deep and then they got real. I think often times we see the celebrity and forget how much of a sense of responsibility they have about the influence of image and culture creation. It’s probably a stretch to say that all actors carry such a sense of duty but without a doubt, Peter Shinkoda shoulders the awareness of his portrayal of Asians in the mass media. His characters always seem to jump off screen and he manages to take even a minor character and make them so memorable that we often recall his moments on camera

as significant story beats. “I never came to Hollywood to be an “A-list” celebrity. I figured it would be hard enough to just get a role. I’ve exceeded what I thought would be possible,” says the former editor who studied engineering. “Now, I do feel that I need to be a voice for the Asians that look up to me.” CV: Do you think Asians are portrayed properly in film and television? PS: I think it’s rare. I love Breakfast Club and probably watched it twenty-five times but I can’t watch Sixteen Candles because the stereotype. I’d rather not see an Asian on screen than one that perpetuates a stereotype that is so terrible. When he enters a scene, you can actually hear a gong! That’s pretty racist! I have friends that tell me that Asian’s don’t have it that bad. Well, we are not portrayed realistically in the media. The women are usually hot and exotic and the conquest of a powerful white male but the roles for Asian men are usually weak, nerdy, and ineffectual. CV: The face of America is changing. Do you think Hollywood is behind? PS: Absolutely. We know that diverse casts make more money. Marvel does a pretty good job. I think comic books have always been ahead of the curve on social issues. CV: Why do you think that is? PS: Traditionally, comic books have not been taken seriously. It’s only been recently that they’ve been turned into films and TV shows that world wide success has put a
spotlight on these story lines. CV: I was just lecturing in Ecuador about the need for writers to recognize the need for a new type of Superhero, one more like Batman or Daredevil and less like Superman. As an actor who portrays these types of characters, why do you think the fans resonate so well with them? PS: Because we are flawed but we still want to combat the injustices of the world. The marginalized are in the shadows because they are not allowed to come into the light. I have more fans in Latin American countries and in Asia. I’m not completely sure why that is. CV: What’s important to you as an actor and specifically as an Asian-North American actor (Peter is from Canada)? PS: Truth. I have to be truthful to the character and that character is Asian so, I feel that responsibility to be the correct representation of that, a voice for that. Black actors have been speaking out but Asian actors have been relatively quiet, Native American’s too. We all need to speak up because the world doesn’t look like a Hollywood set. We need to cast right. That part is easy. CV: What are some of the challenges in bridging cultural and racial understanding? PS: I don’t think it’s about diversity, I believe the conversation is about inclusion. I think writers really need to think about continue to page 5

what they are writing and where their ideas of Asians are coming from. I read scripts and I cringe sometimes because the history and cultures of China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan…all of Asia is not understood or researched well. It’s important to get it right. CV: We are in an interesting place in our history. You and I grew up in the 80’s and perhaps are the first generation to grow up with so many people around us that don’t look like us. We are seeing the melting pot. How do we change from ideas about what was to what will be? PS: We have to stop “white washing” media. I think films like Blade Runner and Star Trek are masterpieces. We all have a responsibility to create content that contributes to the mental health and social health of our world. Sometimes, entertainment is just entertainment but it impacts the whole globe, the images and representations of people we put out there. CV: Did working on bigger projects like Falling Skies or Daredevil make you more aware of the impact your role might have on someone? PS: Absolutely. There are millions if not billions of eyeballs watching over the life span of a TV show or film. It made me very aware of myself, and the roles I choose. CV: What can we learn from Superheroes? PS: I feel that we can learn about good vs. evil but also about leadership and responsibility. I can say, I’m fine; I’m doing ok but what about the future. I don’t want to see a group of Asian kids beating up a white kid anymore than I want to see a group of white kids beating up on an Asian kid. World peace requires everyone to work together to improve current conditions and strive for better. CV: This weekend fanboys (and girls) will converge in Palm Springs. What do you like about doing Cons? PS: Well, I will be doing a Daredevil panel. It’s always great to share stories and meet with fans. I think the comic cons provide a forum for fans to interact with their favorite actors and see that we are real people. I really like to talk with fans. Sometimes people can be shy about approaching others or me at the con. Don’t be shy; I want to talk to you. I think these opportunities are really important especially for any of the actors that don’t get the marketing push from the studios. This allows us to build up our fan base and market our work, too. If you are not regular cast, there isn’t any marketing to push you. You gotta do it yourself! It’s like campaigning or something…I have to win over my fans one by one. I want to give every fan quality time. They matter a lot to me. CV: Are you a fan of this genre or did you grow up on comic books? PS: Oh, absolutely! I loved Indian Jones when I was growing up and yeah, a lot of comics and of course, I’m a Stan Lee fan. Through the years, I’ve developed a lot of friends through the various conventions. Many of the people I call friends now, I was once just a fan of and even a little embarrassed to approach them.

CV: Even though you have an established career as an actor you are shy? PS: I think it’s about growing up a fan and still being in that state of mind. It’s important for self-esteem I think when you can meet a celebrity. It allows you to know that you can achieve dreams. CV: The Incredible Hulk said the same thing when I interviewed him. PS: It’s true. I remember every celebrity I’ve ever met and every autograph I ever asked for. There is something special about that interaction and I know it help build my self-confidence, to believe I could be an actor, too. It’s not like looking up into the clouds to see God or on a screen and feeling you are removed from that reality. You get to see a real person who made it! It’s a step closer to greatness. At least that’s the way I saw it. If I could see and meet the people that I watched on screen then maybe it could be possible for me to be on the screen, too. CV: Did you ever attend a Comic Con growing up? PS: Are you kidding? Con’s are so much fun! I love them! I’m still a fan, too. I remember telling my mom that I would skip school if she didn’t let me go. I would skip school. Whether she said yes or no, I knew I had to go. CV: What books are you reading? PS: Clifton Collins gave me this book called Prison Ramen. It features all these recipes from celebrities that served time. Danny Trejo has a recipe in it! I haven’t tried it but it’s supposed to be pretty good. I need to finish the book but how do you finish reading a cookbook? CV: What projects do you have coming up? PS: I have this project with Marc Goldberg, the wrestler. It’s called Maxx Yeager: Black Ops. It’s funny; we talk about stereotypes and prejudices. I feel bad for saying this. That dude is a lot smarter than I expected him to be! CV: You think because he’s a beast of a man he doesn’t have a brain?? PS: (Laughs) Well…yeah, kind of! His parents are doctors. His dad is. He’s really well educated and understands the business really well. I have a lot of respect for him. CV: I’ve heard rumor there is something else that is coming down the pipe. PS: Well, I’m not sure what you are talking about but I have my fingers crossed for this other project. It’s BIG and definitely something the Comic Con crowd will love! I just can’t talk about it yet. CV: Come on, Peter! The fans want to know! PS: No, I can’t. I don’t want to jinx it and definitely don’t want to say something too soon. It’s going to be a big deal. CV: What advice do you have for those wanting to pursue dreams, entertainment or otherwise? PS: You have to be smart and work hard. Know the business you are getting into and be yourself. A lot of people told me what I needed to do or how I needed to act. They still do now but I didn’t get here by listening to them or anyone. I have good people around me and of course I listen to
their advice but even my friends tell me sometimes, I’m too intense. I just have to be me. I think everyone needs to just be who they are. It’s hard, it’s not easy and there is a lot of sacrifice. Go for it! CV: Thank you for taking time today. The conversation was really illuminating. I’m glad you shared your thoughts. I look forward to seeing you at Comic Con! PS: Thank you. COMIC CON: OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE IN
ORPHAN IS THE NEW ORANGE
E
very so often, a piece of creative work grabs your attention and won’t let go. Thus is the case with Orphan is the New Orange, a brilliant homage to “Orange is the New Black,” and “Orphan Black.” If you are a fan of either of these works, you will appreciate an actress that takes on almost every role in this wonderful film playing as part of Geek Fest which is part of the inaugural Comic Con Palm Springs this weekend August 26-28th. I had the pleasure of interviewing the talented Jennifer Sorenson, the actress who dazzles on screen with unparalleled range and director Alethea Root who turned this technical challenge into a modern masterpiece of pop culture cinema. Meredith Riley Stewart and local producer, Kim Waltrip, produced the film. CV: Why did you want to do this film? AR: Meredith Riley called and said this project needs a director. I read it and loved it! I love both shows and got the jokes. She wanted to make it for very little and well, we expanded the budget to meet the vision. JS: I wanted to make this film, because I am a huge fan of both “Orphan Black” and “Orange is the New Black” and I thought it would be fun to recreate something that I admired so much. I also knew it would be a huge challenge and push me in ways I wouldn’t normally get to experience as both an actor and producer. I also felt that this was not a job that someone would hire me for, especially since I am a, relatively, “unknown” actor. So, like many artists I admire, I created my own work so I could show the world (and myself) what I was capable of. CV: What was most challenging about playing all the roles? JS: The turn around time between roles was the hardest. I sometimes had minutes to change wardrobe, make up and wigs and then go perform in a different accent, body and intention. At the same time, the time pressure helped me stay out of my head, because I couldn’t think. I had to just “do”. Filming in a live prison has its challenges, too. No daylight, for instance. AR: With an actress playing nearly all the parts, it was a real technical challenge to figure out how to not only make it engaging but also keep the

lines clean (the physical lines) for editing the final cut together. Nothing could touch. Fortunately, we had an awesome editor! CV: Which of the characters are most like the real you? JS: Probably Allison, the suburban, psychotic housewife! Which is funny, because I’ve heard Tatiana Maslany say that she is most like Allison, too! And, I never understood that until I played her. But, there is something very honest about her and she is very focused and gets sh** done! She should probably run for president. CV: How does creating fan films differ from original dramas for you? JS: With fan films, you are very aware of your audience. You want to do the fans proud. I purposely made sure every single clone (to date) was either talked about or appeared in our film. There are also so many fun opportunities for “Easter Eggs”, which I always love. For instance, our license plate in the first scene is Cosima’s tag number. I feel like, although you’re restricted to another world you didn’t create… There is so much freedom to create within that world. AR: This really is our “love letter” to Tatiana! CV: Who are you most excited to see at Comic Con? AR: Stan Lee! I worked with him once as a Production Designer for an Activision promo. He played the janitor! He was really sweet. JS: Our friends from the film festival we are in, GeekFest Film Festival. It’s a great group of filmmakers. Meeting Stan Lee would be fun, too! CV: So, I heard you (Jennifer) almost died in Prison...what happened? AR: (Laughs) JS: Almost died, is a slight overstatement! Knocked out from being tasered, is more like it. While we were filming, my costumes were the actual prison uniforms they used in the prison we were filming at. I turned the corner walking to set one morning and a police officer jumped back and went for his taser. I yelled, “It’s me! It’s me!” Which seems dumb now, because what the hell did that mean? But, it worked! He relaxed and let

me walk by. AR: We filmed in a “live” prison with real inmates. She could have died. CV: What do you want people to know about this project? JS: I want people to know that this project was, truly, a grass roots production. Alethea Root (our director) and I had no idea where the money and people were going to come from to make this film. We were just going to do it. She made me set a filming date. And, we did, at our first meeting. I thought she was crazy. We had no money, no equipment, etc. Two months later we pulled into a live prison and began filming. Everything just showed up (with a lot of hard work)! But, we did it and it’s changed my life. AR: Keeping the lighting consistent for the length of the scene was tough! We would set the lights in front of real inmates, not actors and then would be ready to shoot 9the scenes) but then
would have to reset due to the prisoners lunch break! CV: I loved this film! Congratulations and continued success. Thank you for your time today. AR: Ah, thanks! JS: Thank you! WINNING LOCAL ROCKERS HOLLACE AWARD PERFORM AT COMIC CON PALM SPRINGS
F
or only having been a band for about a year now, Hollace has already experienced quite a few accolades and triumphant moments. Within the first few months of their existence they took the coveted, top-spot in the annual Coachella Valley Band Showcase at The Hood and last May they were awarded the honor of “Best New Band” at the Coachella Valley Music Awards. Overflowing with validation, it seems as though the boys from Hollace have hit the ground running and have nowhere to go but up. Currently on schedule to perform this Friday night at the first ever, Comic Con Palm Springs, Hollace is primed to rock the eager attendees at the much anticipated event. I have had the privilege of being acquainted with most of these guys for a few years now through previous projects they have been involved with and have always known them to be top-notch musicians with ambition and a strong work ethic. Three of the five band members are roommates who have been friends since their adolescent years growing up in the high-desert. Josh Ballard (drums), Stretch Fisher (bass) and James Eaton (rhythm guitar) have been making music together
since their High School years growing up in Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree. Eaton: “We know each other from way back and I had moved to Reno for 7 years. About three years ago I learned from Josh and Stretch that they were putting together a new band I and wanted to try out. I’ve been here since.” That particular group is no longer in existence, but with the addition of lead-vocalist and lyricist, Alex Antonio...the transition became a successful transformation. Front-man, Alex Antonio (formerly of Deadend Paradox), has brought into the mix a youthful energy accompanied by solid vocals and songwriting skills (not to mention a dreamy set of dimples). However, he insists that his bandmates make it easy to write songs with everyone having input. Antonio: “Much of what I come up with just comes to me when the guys are jamming and the lyrics just flow.” Those inspirational jam-sessions take place at the Cathedral City home of Ballard, Fisher and Eaton, which doubles as a rehearsal-space/recording studio and, as I have witnessed first-hand...it’s not exactly

On the contrary, they have built quite an impressive setup of professional-quality equipment to meet just about any of the technical needs a band could have. Most of which is due to drummer and multi-instrumentalist, Josh Ballard. Anyone who knows Ballard knows he is a music-production whiz who would be a valuable asset to any band. Russell the Bear, a band that is a sideproject that also includes Fisher and Eaton is currently working on, “A Tribute to Naughty Boy,” which is an idea from Ballard’s heart. Ballard: “On Sept. 1st, Russell the Bear will be opening at The Palm Canyon Roadhouse for Hollace and 5th Town. I am really looking forward to it because we will be performing songs that were written by a good friend of mine who had passed away some years back and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate his life.” If Ballard is the sound and production guru, the guy who they all agree is the metaphoric, “backbone” of the band would be leadguitarist/backup vocalist, Frank Michel. Michel is one of those musicians that is fun to watch play because his obvious passion for performing radiates from within. Having previously played in bands in the Inland Empire before moving to the desert 7 years ago, he became eager to play music again and soon joined his first local band; a Muse coverband that consisted of several guys who are currently relevant participants of the local music scene. As far as being the unofficial leader behind Hollace, Michel admits that is true, but takes it in stride. Michel: “It comes natural through my personality and my work ethic to kind of lead and keep things moving in a way but in all actuality, with this group there is a lot of mutual respect for everyone’s opinion and although we disagree from time

Goo Goo Dolls have had an unprecedented string of 14 number one and top ten hit singles including “Name,” “Slide,” “Black Balloon,” and “Better Days,” which, because of its uplifting lyrical spirit, was adopted by CNN as an anthem of sorts for the channel’s Hurricane Katrina recovery coverage. “Iris,” from the City of Angels soundtrack, spent nearly 12 straight months on the Billboard charts and held the number one position for 17 consecutive weeks. “Iris” was also reported by Billboard to be the biggest pop radio song of the last 20 years. Goo Goo Dolls, which features singer and guitarist John Rzeznik and bassist Robby Takac, have been on the road since
to time, we are always able to come to an agreement that suits us all. We all pretty much have the same goals and vision for the band’s future.” For Hollace, under the guidance and management of Mystic Avalanche Entertainment, the future does indeed appear bright. But, having such a whirlwind of success in the first year of existence, they can’t help but to look back on it with pride. Bassist, Stretch Fisher and I chatted about the biggest highlights of their journey as a group thus far. Fisher: “Well, in the beginning winning the battle of the bands at The Hood was awesome because we really had only been at it all together for a few months. Winning a CVMA for Best New Band was a huge honor for us as well.” Another big highlight for Hollace in the past year was their recent gig at House of Blues in San Diego. aturday, September 17th at The Palms in Wonder Valley, musical group Son of the Velvet Rat, will celebrate their seasonal return to the high-desert with a very special evening of live music and art in collaboration with fellow Austrian artist and friend, Gilbert Bretterbauer and sponsored by the Austrian artists association INTRO-GRAZSpection. The outdoor stage at The Palms will be transformed by Bretterbauer’s fabric installation entitled Desert Desolation Décor creating a unique acoustic effect and an extraordinary spatial feeling featuring live sets by Son of the Velvet Rat (Georg Altziebler and Heike Binder) with a performance by The Sibleys and other special guests to be announced. Showtime is at 7:30pm. This is not a ticketed event. Desert Desolation Décor is a spin-off of a stage installation designed by Gilbert Bretterbauer and used at a live appearance by SotVR in 2014 (ephermeropterae tba 21/ Augarten). This multilayered fabric construction enwraps the musical performance in an external shell consisting of decorative elements meant to evoke an open-ended form of existence and an intimate nomadic retreat beyond the realm of the traditional urban backdrop. Signed copies of an adjunct publication containing lyrics of SotVR’s songs along with drawings and photographs by Gilbert Bretterbauer will be offered for purchase at the performance. The limited edition book elaborates on the tense, complex interrelationship between transience and sustainability permeating every aspect of the creative, artistic experience. Son of the Velvet Rat (sonofthevelvetrat. com) is the project of Austrian songwriter Georg Altziebler and his wife Heike Binder who now make their home in the California desert. With an impressive band history, their catalog includes award-winning collaborations with luminaries such as Lucinda Williams, Ken Coomer and Peter Jesperson. Their lyrics are purely poetic and their sound intersects and intertwines the genres of garage punk with French chanson and European folk-noir in a spectrum of style that seems to both surrender to and defy gravity. This special performance event highlights the couple’s return from a sixmonth tour in Austria, Poland and the U.K. on
the heels of a newly-recorded and yet-to-bereleased album produced by Joe Henry (whose most recent collaborators include, Billy Bragg, Bettye LaVette, Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell). Gilbert Bretterbauer is an Austrian artist whose works span a range of visual, architectural and interior design. I
love jazz. I love jazz so much that I am doing whatever I can do to bring more jazz to the area. I’ve been doing jazz events in the desert for 5 years. They continue to grow. My latest event is giving you more of what you’ve been asking for. Celebrity Jam Fest steps up the popular Celebrity Jazz Jam series into a ballroom atmosphere. On Wednesday night, Oct. 5, from 6-9pm national artists and local favorites (20 artists so far) will hit the stage at the Woodhaven Country Club in Palm Desert, to treat you to a selection of jazz, blues, funk, groove, R&B and more at the Celebrity Jam Fest. There will be table linens, candlelight, and more inside. Outside on the patio there are tables and chairs which overlook the ballroom where there will be a dance floor all overlooking the beautiful golf course. We’re starting with an ‘Artist Appreciation Party’ from 5-6 in the lounge with wine tasting, liquor tasting, and a selection of food pairings by the new Chef at Woodhaven Country Club. Chef Richard Perez was previously at The Cork Tree. He will be creating some tantalizing tidbits to compliment the wine and liquor tastings. Tastings will continue until 7 pm. This is great opportunity to meet the artists, mix and mingle, take some photos and get a CD or two signed. Bottles of wine and specially priced
premium cocktails will be offered (no host bar) with cocktail service throughout the evening. Our headliners are Adam Hawley who just spent 5 weeks at #1 on Billboard with his first single “35th Street” with Eric Darius. He is an incredible guitarist who toured with Jennifer Lopez, Manhattan Transfer and most recently on tour with Dave Koz opening up for Barry Manilow. We had him at our last show in May and I had to bring him back. He’s off the hook crazy good. Our emcee is Slim Man; singer, composer, author of a great cookbook, with an impressive track record, he’s also the 2016 CV Music Award for Best Jazz Vocalist. Greg Vail (sax, flute, clarinet, and recording artist who’s sold over a million CDs) will be there and he will blow you away with his chops. The LA Jazz Artist of the Year and multitalented Bob Sena will be there with his vibes, trumpet, and vocals. If you love Latin jazz, Bob is your man. He travels in from Las Vegas. He’s a regular part of my jams. He’s that good. We’ve just added Paris and Melody Escovedo, father and daughter from the famous Escovedo family (Santana, Sheila E) on percussion. A tall, spirited player he’s a show in himself. Joe Baldino is our guitarist. He is a composer, and recording artist playing a variety of guitars. Joe’s passion for music comes through in every note he plays. I’ve been working with Joe for a couple of years now. He’s in the process of recording a CD produced by legendary Brian Bromberg. This recording will include guest appearances by some of the biggest names in the smooth Jazz industry. It is scheduled to be out late this year. Craig Chesnut is an accomplished drummer who plays all over Southern California with Slim Man, John Stanley King, and many more. Special guests include Sergio Villegas a flamenco guitarist who’s recorded on over 50 CDs and has played with some impressive artists and bands including Shakira, Baby Face, Los Fugitives, and the famous Gypsy Kings. One of the desert’s favorites, Rose Mallett, will bring her bluesy style to the jam with her vocals. Another diva from the desert, Keisha D, will be there belting out one of her songs. Cleer, a talented vocalist from LA but more recently the desert, will be opening the jam with “Uptown funk”. Cleer was trained and groomed by the voice coach for Michael Jackson. The desert’s own Cat Lyn Day, a jazz vocalist and actress, who is best known for her Marilyn Monroe numbers will wow the crowd. I’m bringing in 2 vocalists from outside the area that I’m sure will delight you. J.C. Bentley is a sassy vocalist and recording
artist with a spirited style. Peggie Perkins has an incredible voice. I heard her sit with Art of Sax a few years ago and I’ve always wanted to hear her again. To complete the special guests Dave Thomasson a talented sax player, originally from Chicago, but most recently LA, will be rounding out the horn section. We’ve also got Mark Gagliano on percussion.There may be a few more surprises by show time. That’s the great thing about a jam; it’s so ‘Alive’. ack in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, Bob Dylan found inspiration from American Folk music, in particular, Woody Guthrie. For the Beatles, it was the primitive Rock & Roll and the Rhythm & Blues emanating from America. The Rolling Stones were deeply influenced by the rural Blues birthed in the Mississippi delta and electrified in Chicago. When Jake Bugg had his first musical epiphany it happened while he was watching a “Simpsons” episode. That’s how it goes for Millennials, inspiration comes from sources both weird and mundane. Skateboard videos, car commercials and computer games currently have a broader impact than records or radio. For Jake Bugg it was the “Simpsons” episode that focused on bullying and Astronomy, while Don McLean’s song, “Vincent,” (a paean to the 19th century painter), played in the background. Jake Bugg was born Jake Edwin Charles Kennedy in Nottingham, England in 1994. His parents each had nascent careers in music and separated when Jake was quite young. He grew up on a council estate and began playing guitar at age 12, not long after the “Simpsons” episode aired. Digging deeper as he began woodshedding, Jake drew inspiration from heavyweights like the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Donovan, Johnny Cash and the Everly Brothers, along with Britain’s biggest ‘90s band, Oasis. He dropped out of school at age 16 and adopted his dad’s surname, Bugg, as his stage name. After playing a few local gigs, he submitted his own music to BBC Introducing, a program created to support new and unsigned musicians. In 2011, He was selected to play on the “BBC Introducing” stage at the venerable Glastonbury Festival. That exposure garnered him a contract with Mercury Records. His self-titled debut arrived in late 2012 and critics immediately drew comparisons to a young Bob Dylan. Jake quickly brushed off the correlation, saying at this point,

Metallica was a bigger inspiration. But it was easy to see the similarities; the same, chain-smoking, nervous energy, and an affinity for spare acoustic music that inspired by both young men. His album hit #1 on the British charts. Following high profile tours opening for Lana Del Rey and Noel Gallagher (architect for Oasis’ sound), Jake retreated to ShangriLa studio to record his second effort. A world away from council flats, the Malibu studio is owned by Rick Rubin, one of the most influential producers on the planet. Rick enlisted Elvis Costello’s drummer, Pete Thomas, as well as Red Hot Chilli Peppers drummer Chad Smith to bolster Jake’s sound. Shangri-La, was released in late 2013. Although he gracefully avoiding the dreaded sophomore slump, his second effort didn’t receive the same enthusiasm as his debut. Still, it shot to #3 on the British charts and #46 on the Billboard Top 200. Quite suddenly, Jake experienced a bit of backlash for collaborating (on both albums) with ex-Snow Patrol-er Iain Archer and Jack White/Raconteurs cohort, Brendan Benson, as though co-writing songs made his success invalid. Following tour commitments he laid low for a bit. Mike D. of the Beastie Boys offered to produce some tracks, but the results were unsatisfactory, so Jake decided to go it alone. Nearly three years after ShangriLa dropped, Jake has returned with On My One. He considers it his make-orbreak record. The first two tracks, “On My One” and “Gimme The Love” set the schizophrenic tone for the rest of the 11 song set. Roiling acoustic guitar and snap-turtle snare drum beats accentuate the brooding title track. “On My One” is Nottingham slang for “on my own” and Jake does his best to convey not only the lonely isolation of life on road, but also the ephemeral quality of Pop Star success. “I’m just a poor
boy from Nottingham, I had my dreams/ But in this world they’re gone they’re gone, Oh I’m so lonesome on my one.” “Gimme...” is a stylistic 180, fusing strafing blasts of Telecaster riffs over acidhouse rhythms that recall the Madchester music scene that gripped Great Britain in the late ‘80s. (Maybe Jake saw an obscure “Simpsons” episode devoted to the Stone Roses and Inspiral Carpets). The lyrics offer a glimpse into the creative process of trying to write a “hit” song; “Stick lies and rhymes about the old days, keep ‘em rich just to make new waves/I’ve thought about it in a few ways, full back tough on the pale blaze.” And so it goes, Jake never wanted the “New Dylan” tag and here he gives himself permission to color outside those lines. Both “Never Want To Dance” and “Love, Hope And Misery” display an unexpected facility for Soul music. His vocals seem to be channeling both Al Green and Australia’s original boy band, the Brothers Gibb. The former blends languid rhythms, sleek keys and peppery horns. The lyrics mine the rich “Baby, baby don’t get hooked on me” ethos pioneered by Mac Davis in the early ‘70s. “And I don’t know if I need ya, I know it might be cruel/And I don’t think that I love ya, I know I’m such fool.” The latter sounds like the bastard child of the Black Keys and the Bee Gees. Stinging guitar licks collide with echo-y slapback bass, a tick-tock beat and soulful strings.
Jake affects a rueful falsetto croon. His words of comfort don’t completely mollify, because, um, nature. “They say it comes in threes, love, hope and misery/ And the first two are wrong and tell me I am wrong, I hope that I am and you don’t hate me/ Don’t be mad, I’m just a man, and I know that you must hate me.” The album’s most ambitious songs, “Bitter Salt” and Ain’t No Rhyme” provide a one-two punch “Bitter...” is a Bluesy stomp, powered by a four-on-the-floor beat, shapeshifty guitars that ricochet, drone and jangle. Meanwhile, on “Ain’t...” Jake unleashes his inner MC. Over a kinetic rhythm and shanga-lang guitars he unspools a cautionary tale of teenage rebellion and crime. He isn’t exactly rapping, but he spits his verses with authority. Ultimately, the best tracks here hew more closely to the Folky template he created for his first two albums. The jaunty melody of “The Love You Were Hoping For” belies a lonely, Eleanor Rigby-esque portrait. “Put Out The Fire” is an infectious mash-up of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream.” The Shaggy Dog saga of “Livin’ Up Country” is a ramshackle Country charmer. “All That” is a tender encomium to a brief romantic encounter that recalls long gone troubadours like Nick Drake and Tim Buckley. The album closes with the swagger-y Blues shuffle “Hold On To You” that kind of just hits the spot. On paper, this album shouldn’t really work. Stylistically, “On My One” is all over the map. On most of the tunes, Jake plays all the instruments himself, and also handles production, with a bit of assistance from Jacknife Lee, (R.E.M., the Cars, U2). Really, this record charts the progress of a kid who’s gone from a scrubby council flat in Nottingham to the posh surroundings of Notting Hill. It may not be perfect, but it definitely feels authentic. Clearly, Jake Bugg is just getting started.

Batman is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, and first appeared in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939). Batman’s secret identity is Bruce Wayne, an American billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, and owner of Wayne Enterprises. IN MEMORY OF SUMMER, BRING YOUR DOG INSIDE!
T
his August marks the one year anniversary of the death of a Silky Terrier who passed away in the blazing summer heat. The animal rescuers who valiantly tried to save the pup named her “Summer”. Summer sought refuge from the hot weather under an automobile in a Desert Hot Springs car lot. Tragically, the soaring temperature and the hot sand beneath her feet proved too excessive for Summer’s little body, and the site became her coffin. Undoubtedly, there are other Coachella Valley dogs that passed away from this summer’s relentless heat, some left in cars, others left on hot patios, or kept as “outdoor only” dogs in backyards. Their stories did
not make the news or grab the attention of hundreds of animal lovers as did Summer’s sad ending. This cannot be said enough - - BRING YOUR DOG INDOORS DURING THIS HOT WEATHER! Take Benji on long walks in the early morning and evenings, avoiding outings when the sun is at its highest. Avoid asphalt and concrete when you walk, and stick to shaded areas whenever possible. This is not the time to have him run alongside while you bicycle ride. Popular flat nosed breeds such as Shih Tzu’s, Pugs, Pekingese, Bulldogs, and Boxers are at greatest risk from the heat, as are puppies and older dogs. Most Coachella Valley residents are wonderful pet parents, and they keep their pets indoors and treat them like family. Dogs are social pack animals, and like nothing more than being by your side. It is a sad sight to see a neighbor’s dog tied to a post or fence day after day in this sweltering heat, forlorn and bereft of human companionship. Under California penal code section 597, it is illegal to tether or chain a dog to a post or other structure for longer than 3 hours in a 24 hour period. Other dogs may have the run of the yard, but they suffer horribly in the blazing sun,
their water bowls heating up. Dogs sweat through their foot pads, and their release of body heat is not as efficient as in humans. If you decide to approach offending friends and neighbors, do so in a nonjudgmental way, trying to educate them about the dangers the heat poses to their pets. Ask them, “Why do you keep your dog outside?” Some people were raised by parents who admonition “dogs belong inside” is embedded in their minds. Some people grew up on farms and in rural areas where dogs mingled with outdoor livestock and appeared content. Others came from countries where dogs are routinely kept outside all the time. However, we live in a geographical area of extreme summer heat that can jeopardize your dog’s health and even cost him his life. Rising temperatures cause a multitude of medical problems

for your dogs that can bring expensive veterinary bills. Bored and lonely, outdoor only dogs frequently develop bad habits. They chew up patio furniture, dig up plants, and create a neighborhood nuisance with their incessant barking. These animals lack socialization, and fail to bond with their families. Here is the best reason for keeping your dog inside the house with you. He will become your loving companion, amaze you with his devotion, comfort you when you are sick or feel blue, and communicate without speaking in ways you can never imagine. I hope this article will make a few folks reconsider their position on the inside/ outside issue. I hope this message will save the lives of dogs will not have to endure the suffering and premature death that happened to Summer, a dog that touched so many of our hearts. WINE ANSWERS WITHOUT WHINING
O
ne of the pleasant things about being on a winery destination getaway is the relaxing downtime afforded between all of the swirls and sips of the escape. However, my computer is bulging out of control with unanswered emails from you lovely vino readers, so how ‘bout I get to a couple of responses out loud here. Some wine concerns to ferret and consider: Greg, La Quinta—I forgot that I left my white wine in the freezer, now they’re pretty much frozen and the corks are even popping out. What do I do? Well— you didn’t indicate what wines were affected. If you had a Grand or Premier Cru Montrachet, or a Kistler Chardonnay, or perhaps a Château d’Yquem … email me this info immediately. I’ll be right over to properly extricate the corks (frozen liquid expands—so your corks had nowhere else to go but out!) and we’ll let the wine unchill for a bit, and then we’ll drink them down. You may also wish to have some great appetizers on hand. Again, the wine is fine; cold is good—heat is always the culprit. But this gets us discussing the “art of chilling wine”—like there’s such a thing. When you chill a wine, of course you are the king or queen of your wine realm and your directive influences the way you and your guests perceive the wine in four distinct ways: the aromatics, acidity, the tannins, and sugar. The aromatics are present because the perfumed molecules are constantly on the move and evaporating from the wine. The hotter the wine, the more alcohol molecules evaporate than the aromatics, creating a possible rough & tumble aroma; too cold and you’ll choke anything from leaving the chilly liquid; just right, you and Goldilocks will witness a slow, steady, layered release of aromatic compounds. Enjoy life—take the time to smell the bouquet. Acidity in a wine tends to be accentuated by chilling, again because it tends to be
balanced by the fruitiness of a wine. The higher perceived acidity adds to the refreshing quality of a wine—reason why we chill both reds and whites. Tannins –the drying, puckering sometimes bitter compound found primarily in red wines—become more obvious in cooler wines, primarily since tannins are assertive and generally balanced by the fruitiness of a wine. That’s why lighter bodied reds chill-up better and retain their predominant fruit flavor. In the desert here, we love chilling our red wine. Examples of some very chill-able reds include the French Beaujolais and Loire Cab Franc, a young Spanish Rioja, and lightbodied Pinot Noirs—like those from Oregon or especially New Zealand. Italians with their food-friendly acidic wines are always game for a quick chill such as Valpolicella, a dry or off-dry Lambrusco, and the coquettish Barbera d’Asti. Sweetness is another important component of wine that can be enhanced or minimized due to the serving temperature. As mentioned previously, acidity in wine tends to be accentuated by cooling the wine. The colder the wine, your perception of the acidity will help to balance any sugar in your wine, leading to a dryer palate impression. Conversely, serving the wine warmer will lead to an impression that the wine is more obviously sweet. On a similar subject, check this one out: Leslie, Palm Desert—I’m just getting into really enjoying wine but I can’t wrap my mind around the term “dry wine”. Everything I’m trying out is very wet—lol. So what’s up? It looks like you nailed it. I don’t like the term either. Once when I taught Wine 101, at the community college, an older student—bless her heart—who sat at the back of the room, thought I kept going on about “dried wine”. As I continued on the subject, she kept making huffing noises and rolling her eyes. She later complained to the administration that I was a dupe and was
wasting her time. We can get nerdy with word origins, but the better approach is to simply say: “Dry”, in theory, means that there is no sugar left in a wine after fermentation, and none has been added. Of course, when talking about dry we are back to discussing the perception of a wine. People toss around terms like “dry” and “off-dry” all the time, thinking these are well defined factors for the way a wine tastes; here, sweet or not sweet—or kinda sweet?? Many dry wines in fact contain a bit of residual sugar, which can be left in a wine to help balance high acidity or tannins.
Oftentimes, it’s left there because it makes a wine taste fruitier and possibly feel richer—what’s not to like about this. Above, I mentioned both a “dry” and “off-dry” Lambrusco for chilling. I wrote this to distinguish from the very sweet and ever sticky Riunite, a once-popular brand that’s still around but has Americans thinking all Lambrusco is sweet-sweet. To kind of get off the subject, let me say this: the sexy & spritz-y real Italian Lambrusco is lovingly lively: Vivace! Lambrusco’s allure especially shines when served with food. Native to a land of rich foods—hard, salty cheeses; fatty charcuterie; hearty, meaty pasta sauces— the wine’s bright acidity, nose-tingling fizz, and dark, sometimes mildly tannic fruit, provides the ideal counterbalance. Now to get back on the subject, even in Italy, the range of Lambrusco style is secco (dry), amabile (off-dry), or dolce (sweet). It’s enough to drive you to drink. Cheers! GO BEN GO!
NOW PLAYING: BEN-HUR This unnecessary reboot of two previous blockbuster film version (1925 and 1959 as well as an animate d version and a TV adaptation) somehow fails to deliver an emotional and overtly spiritual melodrama that even comes close to the 11 Oscar winning 1959 version directed by William Wyler starring Charlton Heston as the prince of Judea falsely accused of treason seeking revenge who crosses paths with The Christ. Lew Wallace’s novel has been tinkered with but not improved and there are many homages to the 1959 film, but still this fresh take on the Biblical epic fails to fully connect, even with the epic sea battle, chariot race and crucifixion. I’ve enjoyed Timur Bekmanbetov’s over-the-top, CGI heavy films (“Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter,” “Nightwatch” and “Daywatch”) and I can appreciate his artistic eye as there are some memorable images but too few emotionally potent

moments I though the notion that Ben-Hur and Massala are brothers did not work at all. Although John Huston’s grandson Jack does his best as a determined protagonist, but there’s no comparison to Heston’s Best Actor performance. What I enjoyed most about this big, loud movie was experiencing it in Mary Pickford’s Theater #9, my favorite local viewing room with a big screen, perfect aligned comfy seating and great sound. Still, I was distracted by the frenetic camera work, choppy editing and too obvious computer enhancement. If you love this story and want to see it again, my suggestion: take another look at Wyler’s version on restored Blu-ray, its power has not diminished one iota. So what went wrong? My guess is that the husband and wife producer team of Mark Burnett and Roma Downey had an agenda that they imposed on the material that dampened the artistic merit of the final result. One has only to look at their cheesy Biblically based TV productions and their morally questionable movie “Little Boy” (the one about how God assisted in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki) by the way, I am not alone in finding the latter repugnant. NOW PLAYING: FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS Is there any role that the ultra versatile Meryl Streep can’t do? Apparently not! In this marvelously entertaining comedic drama, Streep plays a real and very rich NY heiress whose greatest desire was to become an opera singer despite her horrible singing voice. Hugh Grant and Rebecca Ferguson co-star in this biopic directed by Stephen Frears. Streep in a fat suit, is fun to watch and listen to as she sings badly, totally oblivious to the reality of her screeching. Hugh Grant is touching as Florence’s companion
who protects and encourages her public performances including – believe it or not -- Carnegie Hall. Simon Helberg (“The Big Bang theory”) pretty much steals every scene he’s in as her ambitious but ultimately devoted pianist. It’s hard to say what this wonderful movie is really about or if it has a deeper meaning, but for me it’s a multilayered love story about art, ambition and delusion. I love and highly recommend it.

NEW FOR THE HOME THEATER: THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER’S WAR
This visually lavish extension of the “Snow White” back-story is not really an origin tale but the terrific cast (Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain), richly appointed art direction and seamless effects almost makes it worth seeing for the nearly immersive experience of seeing a believable fairy tale fantasy world come alive. Still, I expected much from this movie that begins with a mellifluous voiced narrator (Morgan Freeman) telling us “Some evil cannot be truly vanquished.” That’s quite a statement that is not fully delivered in the unfolding of the tale on screen. Especially after our storyteller reminds us that “Love is a fairy tale” and we are about to witness an adventure that comes “long before “Happily ever after.” If only that were true. The story is set in motion when Evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) betrays her good sister Freya (Blunt) with an unforgivable act, freezing Freya’s heart to love and unleashing in her an icy power she never knew she possessed. Retreating to a kingdom far to the north, Freya raises an army of Huntsman as her protectors, with

Ballard’s “unsettling, playfully demented” novel and featuring an all-star cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller and Elizabeth Moss, this deliciously dark satire follows the inevitable result of a breakdown of social strata and public decorum: class warfare. Dr. Robert Lang (Hiddleston) recently moved into a luxury high-rise apartment designed by the enigmatic Mr. Royal (Irons). With a literal divide of the classes, the wealthiest residents live on the upper floors with the best amenities while residents of the lower floors experience regular blackouts and other disruptions of basic services. As additional flaws in the building begin to emerge, both physical and socially, the dwellers of the lower floors revolt, turning the building into a battlefield for a literal and brutal class war. Interesting bonus features include audio commentary from Hiddleston and director Ben Wheatley. And there’s a fascinating featurette on the adaptation process as well as a look at the marvelous 70’s set design and the creation of the special effects. This compelling film reminded me of Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis.” Recommended. Magnolia. Blu-ray.

COMICS! NOT JUST FOR KIDS
T
his weekend, one of the most colorful and fun gatherings is coming to the Coachella Valley. The Palm Springs Convention Center and Renaissance Hotel will host a comic book convention fondly referred to as “Comic Con.” This event celebrates the mashup of narrative, character and art. For generations, words and sentences in bubbles have helped the young discover a love of reading and story. Through the brightly illustrated action-filled pages of comic books heroes and villains have provided entertained and escape. If you think comic books are for kids and adolescent boys, think again. Today, comic books and graphic novels are especially popular among adults both male and female. The comic book industry is thriving and people are reading the genre now more than ever. Here is a sample of what came out this year. Some are recognizable, while others may surprise you. The Mighty Thor (Marvel) Written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by Russell Dauterman. Moving beyond fantasy, mythos and misogyny, a female hammer-wielding superhero enters a world where both dark elves and modern corporations had better watch their backs. Vision (Marvel) Written by Tom King and
illustrated by Gabriel Hernandez Walta, Michael Walsh and Jordie Bellaire. What happens when a superhero wants a normal life? He moves to the suburbs with his family. The Vision character is a synthzoid Avenger and his dreams of a perfect domestic life become nightmares. Panther (Drawn & Quarterly) Written and illustrated by Brecht Evens. A young girl bonds with a talking cat she discovers in her dresser drawer and a frightening relationship develops as they enter a dark and dangerous world. This terrifying tale is rife with tension as innocence and evil commingle. The Sheriff of Babylon (DC Comics) Written by Tom King and illustrated by Mitch Gerads. Set in Iraq during Sadam’s rule, an unlikely team of enforcers must solve a murder that reveals much more than just the killer. Geopolitics, corruption and patriotism collide
as the investigation unfolds. Someone Please Have Sex With Me (2dCloud) Written and illustrated by Gina Wynbrandt. No mystery here. It’s just like the title suggests. A lustful young woman is desperate to get laid. A misfit and not very attractive, the character wanders the streets meeting unsavory candidates that even include feral cats. Saga (Image Comics) Written by Brian K. Vaughn and illustrated by Fiona Staples. After two soldiers from opposing sides of an age-old war, fall in love and have a child together they must go on the run. Their romance and family life is challenged as they confront and battle not only their enemies but their personal demons. Dark Knight: A True Batman Story (DC Comics/Vertigo) Written by Paul Dini and
illustrated by Eduardo Russo. “True” in the title means true. The story is based on author Dini’s personal experience after being brutally attacked. His sad epiphany plays out in this Dark Knight tale as good struggles to triumph over evil. Comic books and graphic novels can be meaningful and significant works of art and narrative. This genre has lead in empowering women, normalizing homosexuality and addressing controversial issues through allegory and metaphor. The worlds, whether reality, fantasy or science fiction, encompass “the other” and reveal the best and worst of our human nature. These colorful, imaginative works are no longer all about superheroes with capes, but about the challenges to exist and live in a world of indifference. The art work alone can be transcendent. The themes are often compelling and relevant. Comic Con Palm Springs starts this Friday, August 26 and runs through Sunday August 28th. If you haven’t picked up a comic book for a while, I encourage you to re-indulge in the genre. And, why not have some fun and attend Comic Con? You won’t be disappointed, in fact, you’ll have a blast!

Unfortunately, those toxic people and situations are the association dues we must pay for being alive. However, viruses and bacteria that cause illness and death still exist and can be passed on to those who are not properly vaccinated reminds Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. The Center for Disease Control recognizes August as National Immunization
month. It’s important to remember that infants and the elderly are at greater risk for serious infections and complications, but vaccinepreventable diseases can strike anyone. Approximately 50,000 adults die each year from vaccine-preventable diseases in the US. Make sure your children are up-todate on vaccines before sending them back to school. School-age children, from preschoolers to college students, need vaccines. Shots may hurt a little, but the diseases they can prevent are a lot worse. Remember hand-washing is like a “doit-yourself” vaccine – it involves five simple and effective steps (think Wet, Lather, Scrub, Rinse, Dry) so you can stay healthy. Regular hand-washing, particularly before and after certain activities, is one of the best ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick, and preventing the spread of germs to others. he St. Joseph’s Players of Yucca Valley are pleased to announce the cast of their upcoming comedy production. Award winning actor/director Abe Daniels has cast the hysterical comedy, “Kitchen Witches” by Caroline Smith. Veteran actor Marty Neider will play T.V. cooking show personality Dolly Biddle, a diva in her own mind. She’s the host of the cable cooking show, “Baking with Babcha”. Her rival Isobel Lomax will be played by a St. Joseph’s Players new-comer, Sally Fox. Her cooking show is called, “Busy with Izzy”. Dolly’s longsuffering son Stephen the T.V. shows’ director/ producer will be played by another newcomer to The Players, Jackson Dean. Rob the camera guy keeps the show rolling; he will be played by Barry Inscore. Dolly and Izzy are two “mature” women who have hated each other for over 30 years, ever since Larry Biddle dated one and married the other. When circumstances put them

together on a TV show called The “Kitchen Witches”, the insults are flung harder than the food! As long as Dolly’s dressing room is one inch closer to the set than Isobel’s, it’s a losing battle, and the show becomes a ratings smash as Dolly and Isobel top both Martha Stewart and Jerry Springer! “Kitchen Witches” will open November 12, 2016 and runs Saturday nights at 7 p.m. with Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. through December 4. What is Kidsworks? Beginning October 2016, DTW will begin a new children’s theatre education program entitled KIDSWORKS. The program is designed for youth aged 8-16 yrs who will audition to become part of the KIDSWORKS Company. Every Saturday, the children will receive acting, singing and dance training in order to present two mini-musical revues. These revues will be presented for DTW’s main audience as a preshow for the corresponding production. The preshow includes: skits, songs and lots of danceing. The style is always musical theatre; however the music and material cover many genres. DTW will have 3 theatre instructors, costumers and supervisory staff who are all pre-screened to work with Children. The KIDSWORKS program will have multiple auditions throughout the year to accept new members, giving more opportunity to all in the Valley. Why Kidsworks? “Growing up in Fresno, CA I was always jealous of the other kids who performed at GOOD COMPANY PLAYERS JUNIOR COMPANY. They were learning fundamentals of theatre performance and getting a big chance to perform in front of large audiences.” says Artistic Director Lance Phillips-Martinez. “I set up Kidsworks to be a training ground for younger performers who have the talent and drive, but could not afford the high tuition prices currently offered by other local theatres and dance studios.

This could cost Columbia $100 million if they lose the lawsuit. Just because you are invested via a big name does not mean that your plan is
run with your best interests in mind. John Oliver of HBO’s Last Week with John Oliver did an expose showing that his company’s plan was being gouged by John Hancock for excessive fees while performing well below industry averages. So how can you know whether your plan is being run correctly? Ideally, you want to review all documents related to your plan. As these can be hard to decipher, consider a few simple items when assessing your plan. First, do not pay upfront sales charges or commissions. Most of the better investment ideas do not require these types of payments. Are you being charged Rule 12b-1 fees? These are fees embedded in the cost a mutual fund and paid to your investment advisor. With a little digging on Google Finance or Yahoo Finance, you can find out how your mutual fund fees are being shared. Many few 12b-1 payments as a conflict of interest as the fund is paying your advisor a ‘bonus’ for directing you toward them. Administrative fees are another category where the funds may pay third parties as
well. As such, stay away from funds that pay these typically unnecessary fees. Many target date retirement funds are invested via other funds. With some of these funds, you pay fees for the target dated fund as well as the funds that you are invested in. This means that you are paying twice the fees that you need to. If you are unsure, just invest in the underlying funds. Lastly, things like Stable Value Funds and Variable or Fixed Annuities often have heavy fee loads that serve to reduce your returns. If you try to sell these investment types, you then get hit with another round of fees. If you think your fees are small and do not matter that much, think again. Let’s use an example where a couple or person saves $1,000 a month for forty years. By reducing expenses by only 0.50%, this saver will have an additional $530,000 by retirement. When you consider the fact that you are probably doing most of the investment decisions yourself with minimal support, why would you want to pay any extra fees? It has been my experience that the funds that overcharge also underperform. Higher fees can not only mean lower returns

but typically a more poorly performing investment choice. Similarly, lower fees do not mean better performance. You, your plan administrator and investment advisor need to review fees, returns and performance relative to peers on a regular basis. Ideally, you want to be invested in funds that are consistently in the top half of their peer group. As a well-run plan often outperforms their lower performing counterparts by 5% or more (using our example again), this can increase the amount saved over a lifetime from $920,000 (3% net return) to $4 million (8.5% return). As it can be very hard to tell whether you are being overcharged or not, call or email me if you want a free, no strings attached analysis of your investment accounts and/ or retirement plan. CAN DRIVING WHILE DISTRACTED RESULT IN A DUI?
T
he easy answer is MAYBE. In some states Driving Under the Influence (DUI) is called (DWI) Driving While Intoxicated….or Drunk Driving. Whatever the name, before you can be found guilty, you first have to be arrested. To be arrested the officer has to first see you doing something wrong. In other words the officer needs Probable Cause (PC) or a reason to stop you. PC is the central issue for a stop. Thus when a cop sees you driving while talking on a cell phone; texting; with a broken tail light; no current license tag or any other vehicle code violation then s/he has PC or a reason or right to stop you. After PC to stop you, if alcohol is detected then further investigation will take place. This could involve Field Sobriety Tests, Breath Test, Blood Test etc. If the officer then sees a bag of MJ or a gun in plain sight s/he can investigate further. The majority of drivers who have been drinking too much and are not stopped because the officer did not see them do anything wrong. In other words there was no PC to stop and they got lucky...this time. Once they have the right to investigate, if a breath test shows the amount of alcohol is enough for a DUI arrest (i.e. .08) you are taken to the Indio Jail. Before doing so the cops will request you perform the Field
Sobriety Tests such as; walk the line, finger to nose, following the officer’s finger or pen, balance tests etc. Ironically ALL THESE FST TESTS ARE OPTIONAL. You can politely say you are willing to take any test that is mandatory and if it is optional then you OPT not to take the test. You would then request a Blood or Breath test at the station. Doing so is mandatory and failure to comply is a REFUSAL for which you will automatically lose your license for 1 year. It is not illegal to drink and drive as long as the amount of alcohol has not made one under the influence. The problem is that most people think they have to be DRUNK to be under the influence. The amount of alcohol needed to make you under the influence varies with different factors. These can include ones weight, the quantity of alcohol or the time since the last drink. Most drivers confuse the fact that they only had “2 drinks”, with the issue of how much alcohol was in each drink. We know how much is in a can of beer. When a recent client swore to me he only had one drink I believed him and said the machine must have been broken. I fortunately asked the next question “did you take a red Costco 16 oz. cup and fill it 2/3 of the way with vodka and top it off with OJ?” He responded yes. I explained
that was 12 oz. of alcohol which equaled 12 drinks. He responded OH! Thus there was a reason for the very high reading. In other words if you drink and drive and are not stopped, then as Chick Hearn would say.........NO HARM NO FOUL. If you are not stopped you are the lucky one and just got away with breaking the law. MEET THE COACHELLA VALLEY VOLUNTEERS IN MEDICINE COLLEGE FOOTBALLS WHOM TO WATCH

he nonprofit Coachella Valley Volunteers in Medicine (CVVIM) provides a no-cost primary health care service to medically underserved adults residing in the Coachella Valley and we are supported by some generous organizations and individuals in our community. On September third we will be a beneficiary of the La Quinta Block Party from 6 pm until 10 pm in Old Town and we hope you’ll stop by, meet our executive director Doug Morin, and learn about our organization. Volunteers from all walks of life and with widely varied skills are the heart and soul of the clinic and we are always in need of additional volunteers, from front office administrative and clerical staff to physicians. We especially need bilingual staff. From physicians to the college student answering the phones, patients are served by individuals who give selflessly of their time and talents to help their less-fortunate neighbors. We’re having our first Walk-in Clinic on September 17th which will feature a small resource fair including Cal Fresh, FIND, The Narrow Door, Inland Counties Legal Services, and Health Navigators. Despite the Affordable Care Act (ACA), an estimated 50,000 to 70,000 people in the Coachella Valley are still are still without healthcare (the population in the 2010 census was 346,518), and our staff of volunteers will be available to discuss healthcare options. here should be no surprise at who tops my initial power ratings as the defending National Champs are No. 1 in my preseason ratings heading into 2016. While the Crimson Tide have some major question marks at QB and RB, they have signed by many sharps the No. 1 recruiting class in the country for each of the last 5 years. Quite simply, they have the most talented roster and are coached by one of the greatest in the history of the game. These below power ratings are a Vegas rating as I would favor Alabama by at least one point over any other team in the country. Which by the way, should be the only system that matters. It’s tough making the Crimson Tide an underdog in any situation. They’ve only been an underdog once in the last 6 years and they hammered Georgia 38-10 (+2.5) in Athens last year in that role. However, the gap is a little closer this year between the Tide and the rest of the country. Last year’s No. 2 team, Clemson could be even better in 2016 thanks to 8 returning starters on offense. They are led by the best QB in the country in DeShaun Watson who became the first player in CFB history to throw for more than 4,000 yards and run for more than 1,000 yards in a season (did play 15 games). The Tigers will have stiff competition in their own division as Florida State is also a Top 5 team with 17 returning starters. Remember the Seminoles get Clemson at home on October 29 (FSU is 11-1 vs Clemson in the last 12 meetings in Tallahassee). The SEC actually has 3 teams in my Top 6 as LSU is No. 3 thanks to the return of 17 starters including RB Leonard Fournette. Les Miles made a great hire in bringing in DC Dave Aranda who has led some of the best defenses in the country the last 3 years at Wisconsin (No. 1 in the country in that span allowing just 289 ypg). Expectations are also high in Knoxville as the Volunteers have their most talented and experienced team in 15 years. Remember the Volunteers lost four games last year by a total of 17 points blowing a lead in all four.
Oklahoma is the prohibitive favorite in the Big 12 as I have the Sooners powerrated 9 points better than any other team. The Big Ten looks to go back to the old days with Michigan and Ohio State clearly the best two teams but beware of last year’s defending conference champs in Michigan State who I still have power-rated at No. 15 (The Spartans host both Michigan and Ohio State and beat both teams on the road last year). Finally, the Pac-12 looks like it could be one of the most wide-open races in 2016. Defending champ, Stanford tops my initial ratings thanks to the return of all-everything Christian McCaffrey. However, dark horse National Title contender Washington is much improved in year 3 under Chris Petersen (I have the Huskies +9 over last year). In the South, USC and UCLA have very talented rosters (hence their Top 15 ratings), but both teams, specifically USC, also play difficult schedules. My final 4 teams listed below most likely will not change much through the course on the season. They are healthy, well coached, well-funded and let’s face it – they’re at schools that don’t let knuckleheaded athlete shenanigans reach the public news cycle. ARE YOU PREPARED?
Y
ou’ve heard the adage, “Expect the unexpected.” While we are rarely prepared for what life proposes, you can certainly guarantee you will have curve balls thrown at you. Each day offers a new experience. Naturally, the unexpected will be sure to deliver positives and negatives. This just so happens to be LIFE. Being prepared doesn’t suggest you walk on eggshells and believe something daunting or bad will occur. Consider a mindset of the unexpected will bring positive adventures. In the year 2000 I sustained a terrible foot injury. Prior to and post surgery I was in a walking boot for six months. I was terribly distraught by the lack of physical movement and frustrated. Post physical therapy my PT suggested I take up yoga. I followed her advice and nearly seventeen years later I am a thriving yogini and owner of yoga studio. I never expected my unfortunate circumstance of an injury would lead me down a career path of being an entrepreneur of a small business. Had I never stepped on a yoga mat I can assure you my life would have been entirely different. Each day I awaken with an attitude of gratitude. I am thankful and invite any and all experiences into my life. I’ve had
my share of blessings and moments of turmoil. Let’s not forget, our unfortunate circumstances teach us lessons too. When a situation arises it important you know how to handle what you have been given. Take time to evaluate what is happening. Do not make irrational decisions and consider all possibilities if it warrants them. Over the years I have had the pleasure of meeting so many fascinating people. Many of my students have been with me for years. So many of them never anticipated adopting a consistent yoga practice. In fact, many of them tried yoga and got hooked by happenstance. They were open to expecting the unexpected. As a teacher it is gratifying to witness the transformations. Just when you least expect it you may get the job offer you have been waiting for. You may also meet the love of your life… when you least expect the person. Most often the greatest joys in our life occur when we did not see it coming. I’ve always been a person who loves and thrives due to surprises. I’ve always said, “Bring it on!” Maintain an open-heart and mind. You just never know what’s next! y now almost everyone has heard of Botox. And most people know that it can be used to treat the “frown lines” between the eyebrows, or the “elevens” as it is sometimes referred to… but there are many places on the face that Botox can help! Very often when we treat the frown lines we also treat the horizontal, forehead lines caused by raising your eyebrows up. Treating both areas together gives a smooth appearance to the whole forehead as a unit. Another, commonly treated site, is the crow’s feet at the sides of the eyes. These lines are formed by squinting. By using Botox in this area, we can smooth the appearance of the crow’s feet but we can also create a little brow “lift” which can open up the eyes and reduce that tired, heavy brow look. Some people even need a little Botox on the side of the nose to soften the “Bunny Lines” that happen when we crinkle up the nose while smiling or sometimes, frowning. Botox is not just for the upper face… the lower portion of the face can be treated too! The chin is a great place for Botox if
you tense up and have a dimpled effect in that area. It’s referred to as a “golf ball chin” because it resembles the divots in a golf ball! Even the neck can be treated… The platysma is a very thin muscle that runs from the jawline down to the chest and can be the cause of visible, vertical “bands” as we age… This pulling from the platysmal bands can even accentuate the “jowls” of the face. Botox in this area can soften the pull and change the prominence of the jowls. You can even use Botox around the mouth. In very small amounts, Botox can help with the vertical lines around the mouth. These are typically called “smoker’s lines” but non-smokers get them too. Drinking from a straw or whistling causes you to purse your lips and this can cause these line to form. ILLEGAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS: DEAL WITH IT
Y
ou’re cruising along in the job interview feeling great about the camaraderie you’ve established with the hiring manger. Then a red flag gets tossed on the interviewing field. You have just been asked a question prohibited by law. What do you do? Even in today’s legalistic and politically correct atmosphere, it can happen. When an interviewer queries your plans to have a family, or exactly when you began your career, he or she crossed the line into illegal territory. Perhaps the question was asked out of ignorance to discrimination laws, or the free-flowing conversation unintentionally veered off-course. On the flip side, it is possible the employer knowingly pushed the boundaries. At this point you must decide how to pivot. You might try tactfully reminding the interviewer the question has no bearing on the job description. That might work out or offend the interviewer and get you kicked out of the running. If you really want the job, my advice is to side-step a direct answer to the question, but provide the interviewer with specific information related to your ability to do the job. For example, if the hiring manager is asking about your plans to have children, chances are he or she had the experience of hiring and training an individual only to have the employee resign shortly thereafter opting to be a stay-at-

home parent. Unexpected turnover is hard on employers. An answer to the question might revolve around explaining to the interviewer the importance of continuing your career regardless of any family situation. In most cases, that statement will prod the interviewer to focus on your skills and experience. If you are purposely interviewing with a “family friendly” organization, you might reply that if you decide to have children the onsite daycare center will come in handy. Most baby boomers are sensitive to a line of questioning that reveals their age. Questions related to age are often asked to test the candidate’s flexibility to change and ease in adapting to new technologies. A good side step when confronted with a question pinpointing exactly when you entered the job force, is to acknowledge one of your strengths is possessing vast experience (never say 30 years) adding you invite challenges and enjoy learning new ways of doing things. In any interview situation, preparation is key. Do your homework on the company. If you practice mock interview situations and get comfortable fielding tough questions you can excel in the hiring process.
