CHEECH & CHONG ROLL INTO TOWN ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2

September 1 to September 7, 2016

BY NOE GUTIERREZ

C

heech & Chong are the most recognizable comedy team of our time. At Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio on Friday, September 2, 2016 at 8 p.m. you can witness their classic comedy show live, along with their longtime opening act Shelby Chong. Coachella Valley Weekly spoke with Cheech Marin, from his home in Los Angeles earlier this week in the early morning. When he was told it was 100 degrees at 9 in the morning here in the desert, he replied in jest, “Oh, dear God!” The fact is Marin has close ties to the desert through his passion for golf and a certain music festival. “I’m happy to be back in the Coachella Valley. I can’t wait to see all my people to make them laugh and have a good time. I’ve played all the tournaments there and have gone to Coachella. I’ve come back many times because I was born and raised in L.A. I’m sure I have relatives in the desert by now. We always have a good time out in the desert, the people there are cool.” Performing together since 1971, Cheech and Chong have recorded 9 albums, which garnered four Grammy nominations for Best Comedy Album with one win for Los Cochinos (1973), and co-wrote and starred in 8 movies together, with Up In Smoke (1978) being the highest grossing comedy of that year earning over $100 million. All of their films were directed by Tommy Chong. Cheech & Chong Marin is a multidimensional entertainer and businessman who developed integrity as an actor, director, writer, musician, art collector. Having starred in films like Born In East LA, and on televisions shows like Nash Bridges, Marin is meaningful and influential to a multitude of generations. Marin has also become a well-known private collector of Chicano art. As a team, Cheech and Chong are not remiss of their significance. “I’ve heard the story over and over again when kids come up to me and tell me how they got turned on to us by their parents. Our records and movies are shared on cross country family trips. We used to say we had the only true family films because you had to take your family to get in, ha ha!

We identified that line that is risqué and acceptable at the same time. That’s part of the genius of Cheech and Chong.” Chong was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and began his entertainment career as a musician in a rhythm and blues band. Chong met Marin through an improvisational group he founded called ‘City Works.’ Chong has also starred on the television hit, That 70’s Show, as the improbable stoner ‘Leo’. Chong is also an author of New York Times Best-Sellers, The I Chong: Meditations from the Joint and Cheech and Chong: The Unauthorized Autobiography. The show at Fantasy Springs is a unique opportunity for fans in the Coachella Valley. Since their reunion after 25 years, the duo has only performed a handful of times. “We’ve been doing one-off shows. We’re not banging out shows. We’re more relaxed in our lives right now but we still enjoy getting out on stage and doing our jobs,” Marin said. Marin remains involved in other realms as well. “I’ve received several movie and television offers that I’m mulling over. I just finished a memoir that will be released March 10, 2017. It’s all about my fabulous life and it’s called Cheech Is Not My Real Name, But Don’t Call Me Chong.” Cheech and Chong remain relevant given the current political climate. “Our show allows us to comment on anything happening in the culture right now and different sections.” Music is also a significant part of their

comedy as well. “We’re both musicians. We have a lot of popular tunes like “Earache My Eye” that we play. Bands like Korn, Soundgarden and the Rollins Band have covered it. I don’t’ know a guitarist alive who doesn’t know that riff, ‘da na na, da na na, dun dun dun.’” Once the song hit its peak on the charts, radio station managers pulled the song due to complaints that the song appealed to junkies, dropouts, drug addicts, and drunks. Some radio managers threatened to fire their disc jockeys for playing the song. Tres Papalote Mezcal Marin has further expanded his magnetism into the world of mezcal. As brand ambassador of Tres Papalote Mezcal, he brings an invitation to consumers to step up to the elegance of the high quality mezcal experience. “I’ve always enjoyed mezcal throughout my drinking age life. It tastes great,” shared Marin. The difference between mezcal and tequila are noteworthy. Tequila and mezcal are produced in different regions of Mexico. Mezcal is made from different varieties of agave than tequila. The other big difference between the two types of Mexican liquor is that mezcal distillers traditionally slowroast the agave by burying it in pits with hot rocks, which infuses the final product with its signature smokiness. continue to page 5

THE INAUGURAL COMIC CON PALM SPRINGS WAS A SMASHING SUCCESS! COMIC CON PS

T

hey came in droves from every corner of the country and several corners of the globe. Artists, cosplayers, film buffs, comic nerds and entertainment enthusiasts of all sorts gathered at the Palm Springs Convention Center for the first ever, Comic Con Palm Springs. Being a new event, promoters did not know what to expect as far as turn. I was told they were hoping for 5000 and ended up with nearly 15,000 attendees at the 3 day event. As a Comic Con virgin myself, I was not sure what to expect, but from the ribboncutting ceremony with living legends Stan Lee and Lou Ferrigno, to the costume contests to the wellattended panel discussions, I was impressed with the event throughout.

4

Film maker Zach Eastman traveled from Denver, Co. to premiere his newest project. Eastman: “For a con in its inaugural year, I was surprised how many people there were. I was on a panel that was decently attended and couldn’t believe how big it actually was. I’m very excited to see how much bigger it can get come next year.” Uneekchic is a cosplay model who has been attending cons since 2009. Being a cosplay lifestyle veteran, she was excited to have a hometown event. Uneekchic: “Comic Con Palm Springs was absolutely amazing, the turnout was better than I ever could have hoped, and I can’t wait for next year!” Coachella Valley Promoter and lover of all things Comic Con, Ming Bob Tan: “When a Father can be

his son’s favorite hero or vice versa and Mom can dress up as her daughter’s favorite princess/hero walking together as one. That is something that always makes me realize we all belong no matter what age you are.” Mike Wellman, writer/creator of the Guns A’ Blazin’! comic book series: “Comic Con Palm Springs knocked it out of the park, year one! What we thought would be just another stop along the way on our Guns A’Blazin’! tour turned into a virtual ConCation, complete with enthusiastic fans who were curious to check out new books and fun after-hours parties. We met a ton of new fans (well, we call ‘em

friends!) and sold waaaay more comics than we expected. Sign us up for 2017!” Christopher Spellman, Founder/Executive Producer of CCPS: “It feels incredible to hear that so many people had a great time and that so many people benefited one way or another because of Comic Con Palm Springs. I think everybody is happy that it exceeded expectations and I’m happy about that. The focus for next year is to continue to build upon creativity and being dynamically eventful. We’re going to look at where we need to improve and make sure that people are happy. (More Photos online at coachellavalleyweekly.com)

Family Through it all Marin remains focused on those he cherishes: “My family is great. I have my kids working for me in various positions. My wife is doing well. My grandkids are growing up. Life is good. My wife joins me on tour when she can. She has a pretty busy schedule.” Marin’s omnipresence is only shadowed by his humility. The Coachella Valley will be rolling in the aisles on September 2nd at Fantasy Springs Casino. Tickets for the 8pm Cheech & Chong Live show with opening act Shelby Chong are on sale for $59, $39, and $29 at the Fantasy Springs Box Office, via telephone at 800-827-2946 or online at www. FantasySpringsResort.com.

The bottle decoration was chosen from the Marin’s Chicano art collection. The image on the bottle comes from a glass sculpture skillfully crafted by the artists Elinar and Jamex De La Torre. “We used Jamex De La Torre’s art and embossed it on the label. It’s very colorful. You’ll see if from across the room. The reaction to it is has been great!” The brothers moved from Guadalajara, Mexico to California in 1972. They are respected in the Chicano art community as innovators in their chosen art form.

SLIM MAN

THE COMPLETE IDIOTS GUIDE TO SLIM MAN

MARKETING 101

I

had an idea to write a book called The Complete Idiots Guide to Complete Idiots. I figured, in life, if you can stay away from idiots, you’ll be much better off. So I went to the Complete Idiots website, and actually submitted a synopsis and the first chapter. True story. But I never heard back from them. I followed up a few times, but no word. In show biz, no response usually means “no”. Can you imagine the humiliation? You submit a book to the Complete Idiots people, and they turn you down. Shot down by complete idiots! I have Attention Surplus Syndrome—you know the acronym. I think about things way too long. And I started thinking about the whole Complete Idiots line of books. If you’re trying to market and sell books, do you want to call your potential customers “complete idiots”? Is the word “complete” really necessary? Couldn’t you just call the book series “The Idiots Guide to…”? I have a new cookbook. It’s called Slim Man Cooks. Maybe if I had called it Hey You Stupid Morons! Learn How to Cook! I’d sell more copies. But I obviously don’t know much about marketing, because the Complete Idiots line of books are selling well. So, either people don’t care about the title, or there are a lot of complete idiots out there. I find other methods of marketing questionable. Last week I was driving back to Palm Springs from a Slim Man concert in San Juan Capistrano, CA, when I saw a billboard on the side of the highway… “Text 1234 to ER to find out wait times for our emergency room.” That billboard got me thinking. First of all, if you’re going to the emergency room, you’re probably gonna go to the closest one, not the one with the shortest wait times. Why? Because you’re having an emergency. For instance, if your wife just hacked off her pinkie toe with the weed-whacker, you don’t want to say, “Hey, Hon. Let me fire up my phone and check out ER wait times for all the local hospitals.” No. You’re gonna want to take your wife to the nearest emergency room. Or maybe call a toe-truck! Second of all, I’m driving 4,000 pounds of steel and iron at 65 mph and they want me to start texting an emergency room? Who was the marketing genius that came up with this idea? When I got back to the Slim Shack, I unpacked my stuff, and did some reading. I’m reading a book called The Power of Habit, by Charles Duhigg, a Pulitzer prizewinning author. The book is about how to

September 1 to September 7, 2016

change bad habits and how to develop new ones. It also goes over consumer habits, and how corporations are using these habits to market to customers. Take Target for instance. They have a way of marketing to consumers that I thought was pretty sneaky. Suppose you’re a couple expecting your first baby. You go to Target and buy a book called The Complete Idiots Guide to Raising an Infant. Now, I’m sure there is not a book with that title. But I have witnessed complete idiots trying to raise children. But if you’re in Target buying an actual book about raising an infant, Target starts sending you coupons for diapers, cribs, strollers, car seats—everything new parents need for their newborn. You’d think these parents would be offended by the sneakiness. But it was the exact opposite. They welcomed all the coupons. Why? Because parents who are expecting a baby are overwhelmed. To be able to find everything they need in one place at a discount is a relief. The Target marketing campaign increased their bottom line by millions of dollars a year. We’re being marketed to everywhere, all the time. All of our habits are being watched, data is being gathered constantly. It’s inescapable. Suppose you’re on the Internet, and you Google “How to End a Bad Relationship”. All of a sudden you’re getting pop-up ads for poison blow-darts. Now that’s what I call marketing. Slim Man is a singer, writer, and marketing genius. If any of you want a copy of his new cookbook, go to slimman.com

KEISHA D

BY PATTE PURCELL

T

he level of talent in the desert continues to amaze me. I heard about Keisha D through Karl Erikson and I asked her to perform in the Celebrity Jazz Jam and I have to admit I was blown away. Her rendition of “Summertime,” started acapella and as she told me: “When the drummer asked when they should begin, I said, ‘I’ll let you know.’” She proceeded to set the show on fire with her version reminiscent of her idols, Ella Fitzgerald or Etta James. Keisha started singing as a small child and by her early teens, she was singing in the church and touring the country with the gospel group Hilltop Faith. At 16 she started sneaking into the clubs in Los Angeles to listen to jazz. Of course she was under age and so she had to have a little help which she got from some of her older friends who also happened to be in the gospel group bands. They said she could come in to sing as long as there was no drinking or smoking. Keisha’s love of jazz compelled her to break the rules. Eventually, her parents discovered what was going on when one of their friends saw her performing and the gig was up. With her parents’ blessing, she continued to sing in clubs and in church. Whether it was with a live band or accompaniment tracks, she was happy just to be singing. She was awarded a full scholarship to Azusa Pacific University where she studied classical music. She finished school and then life took over. When she had children, Keisha continued to tour with them to jazz festivals and fairs. She received another partial scholarship in musical theatre from the California Baptist University. She moved to Palm Springs and in 2008, performed in “Open Call” at the McCallum Theatre. Keisha was immediately flooded with offers when she won ‘Best Vocals’. The Bella da Ball variety show highlights Keisha’s talent in a weekly cabaret show that gives her the opportunity to glam it up and dance. Invitations to perform at civic events such as the Palm Springs 75th Anniversary,

Tour de Palm Springs, Palm Springs Pride Weekend, and private events keep her busy throughout the year. She performed at the Palm Canyon Theatre including “Tommy,” where she played the Acid Queen, and in “Cinderella” as the Fairy Godmother, and in “Xanadu” as Melpomene. Keisha loves the desert and has truly found her home. Whether it’s working with her core band or tracks she enjoys her craft. She also has created her own shows and just completed “At Home with Keisha D,” where she entertained 160 guests. Her next appearance is a fundraiser for the Yucca Valley High School Music Department on Sept. 10. She’s been a mentor in the school system and was given the Shiny Apple Award from the Palm Springs Unified School District for 6 years. She works with high school jazz students and also assists with choreography for the dance team. She even played the part of Motor Mouth Maybell in the school’s production of “Hairspray.” Keisha has one CD of standards called “Classic Keisha D.” She reminisced about her time on tour with gospel music and how incredible it was to sing for thousands of people. Keisha loves the desert and the desert loves Keisha D. She currently performs at least three times a year with the Desert Winds Freedom Band. She stays very busy doing private events and performs at Wang’s ‘The Venue.’ You can reach Keisha D at keishadsings@yahoo.com or you can find her on Facebook at Keisha D Sings. For now you can catch her show at Wangs or every third Thursday of the month at Bella da Balls Lipstick Show at the Copa-Show time at 8:00 pm. She will also be one of our special guests at Celebrity Jam Fest at Woodhaven Country Club on Wednesday Oct. 5 from 6-9. A VIP Artist Appreciation Party will be held from 5-6 with wine, liquor, and food tastings which will give guests a chance to schmooze with their favorite artists. Keisha will be performing “Skyfall.” I can’t wait to hear her perform again. For tickets contact purplepass.com/ celebrityjamfest or call 1-800-316-8559.

HUNGRY HEARTS

BY MORGAN JAMES

PHOTOS BY MANIAC PHOTOGRAPHY

I

nhale rapidly, deeply, filling your lungs with the life of your surroundings... hold your breath... then exhale fully and release, heart pumping. That rush of potent ethereal magic you feel could very well be the after effects of listening to “You Know I Care” by Hungry Hearts. The Coachella Valley band made up of Miguel Angel Guizar (vocals), Mani Beltran (guitar), David Ceballos (bass), Ozzy Cervantes (guitar), and Chesley Kidd (drums) is coming out with a new full length album and I urge you to listen up! Boasting strong instrumentation, poignant vocals and passionately playful melodies, the music of Hungry Hearts is sure to impress the masses and possibly consume fans entirely. I was fortunate to speak to all of the band members about their music and where they are headed with it. MJ: What is unique about your song writing process? MB: “Our writing process is way different than most bands. We usually start with a demo I write in my home studio. Then everyone makes the changes they feel it needs according to their instrument and then adds their own input. Once we feel the instrumental is ready, we do vocals. We also go back and make changes to suit the vocals if we feel the need to. We have a huge production behind each one of our songs. There are many more instruments in our songs besides your usual band.” CK: “I was originally a jazz trained guitarist so as a drummer I feel like I try to implement as many feel changes, offbeat hits, and other little things as possible without sacrificing the consistency needed to play this kind of music. And I love following the guitars with my kick drum, but even more, in my music, I love to use my kick drum as its own instrument.” MJ: What inspires the messages behind your lyrics? MAG: “Our music is inspired the by the passion for life and the fear of

8

death(sometimes vice versa) we strive to continuously connect with our fans and people who listen and or are listening for the first time. Having real and personal lyrics really helps connect with our fans and audience music has the power to change lives with just a few words or one message so why not have that be a positive one.” MB: “I think a consistent theme with us has always been go big or go home. We also try and make huge sounding choruses that are very catchy and memorable.” DC: “I’ve been playing bass for years but what I feel extremely passionate about is songwriting. For the past few years a big inspiration behind the lyrics I write are very few times are talked about like mental disorders, addictions, etc. To me it’s not about relating to the most people, but relating to the hardest people, even if it’s just a few.” OC: “We still have more to venture off with lyrically, but as of now we’ve chosen to write what can relate to anyone in the band and it’s therapeutic for us whenever something personal is going on. I sometimes listen to our songs and think, ‘wow that’s exactly what’s going on right now in my life.’” MJ: Tell me about the experience of performing your music live on stage and how you convey your message to your crowd? MAG: “Passion, passion, passion and the desire to leave an imprint in your mind. Personally I’m very interactive with the crowd and we usually don’t like to start until

we get everyone who’s having a drink at the bar smoking cigs outside and whoever is doing god knows what in the bathroom to the crowd. The crowd can expect to have a really sweaty, in your face singer who tries to connect and interact with every single person in the crowd (so expect a lot of creepy eye contact).” DC: “As a band we are aware that we are performing and not just playing songs. Personally I just let it all out and become vulnerable to the people watching me perform and I think the crowd reacts the same way by opening up and enjoying our music in a way they may not be used to.” MB: “I think what sets us apart is our production. It’s cool in the recording process but live it’s a whole different monster. We play to a click tempo track so we can play on time with our backing tracks. It took some getting used to but we have the hang of things now. We’re a metal band so we want people to go crazy. We welcome everything from mosh pits, crowd surfing, circle pits, singalongs, the whole nine. We want people to let loose and have a good time.” CK: “When Miguel grabs the microphone fans get pumped up right off the bat because he really sets it off. He makes the energy go through the roof and that’s something that we have that I’ve noticed a lot of bands don’t these days. A good vocalist can make or break your live show.” MJ: You have some funny stories about past gigs. Would you mind sharing? MB: “All our shows have been pretty nuts. We’ve been lucky and have had huge turn outs for our shows. One show I remember being nuts was last year around December in Coachella with CIVX and Tribesmen. Everything that could go wrong went wrong that night. Ozzy and Miguel got stranded in the middle of the desert on their way to the show. I was stressed over it and made a mistake and got extremely hammered. So when it was our time to play we just channeled all that energy and it got pretty crazy. They had to stop the show because people were getting hurt in the pit. A bunch of people fell on top of our equipment and knocked over our amps. An old guy landed on top of David. It was a nightmare in my eyes but for some reason people loved that show. Good times.” CK: “Our first show at The Hood in Palm Desert will always be one of my favorite shows I’ve ever played with any band. No

one knew what to expect from us, just some new band on the scene that hadn’t had a drummer for 2 years and couldn’t play live until then. Then the place erupted when we got done opening with “Crossing Lines.” The place was lit seriously. I’ve never gotten such a good response from a crowd I don’t think.” MJ: Where can our readers find your music now and tell us about the upcoming album? MB: “We actually have our own site (ihearthungryhearts.com). You can buy all our stuff through there. We also have some free music on there and if you join our mailing list we’ll send some free stuff like custom picks and such. We’ve worked with other people in past but we really like the chemistry in the studio with Charles Massabo. He can be tough but he brings out the best in us. We actually just finished recording a full length with Charles that has yet to be released. It’s our best material to date and I feel like people are gonna love it. We’ve been playing some of our new songs in our set and the crowd response has been great. As to the release date I’m not sure yet, but it’s in the works.” DC: “You can also get our music on iTunes and Spotify. We really want to tour this Fall. We have been saving up to buy a tour van and new merch! As of now we are sold out of the physical copies of our first EP but are planning on getting some more soon. Besides our EP we have a full length which is yet to be released. It’s crazy how much we matured from our previous release, I think people are gonna love it. On our first EP we worked with Nick Matthews from the band Get Scared, Nick Morzov from Cartographer and Charles Massabo, which has produced bands like Falling in Reverse, and Metro Station among others. For the full length we worked exclusively with Charles because we really liked the chemistry.” MJ: What is next for you once the new album releases? CK: “As a band I feel like we need to get off the ground. We have a great foundation, a pretty good local backing, great social media network and all of that but we need to expand. It’s time to do it big. And this band is what’s next for me. That’s where I’m at in life right now. I have faith in these guys and I know they have faith in me, and I feel like things are just getting started for us. So be on the lookout for us, because we’re going nowhere but up.” OC: “Get signed by a label, play a bunch of shows, jump on a couple tours or possible festivals, win the lottery and hope David grows a couple of inches so he can carry his own equipment for once.” facebook.com/HungryHeartsOfficial twitter.com/HungryHearts760 instagram.com/hungryhearts760 soundcloud.com/hungryhearts760

DOVE DANCES WITH DRUM IN EARTH MOON EARTH

T

he legacy of the musically magic Evaro family continues to grow and evolve as Gabriella Evaro’s dove-like voice and empathically poetic lyric sense join forces with the unique rhythm soundscapes of Daniel Joeright, former drummer for the Rentals. Helping them press deep into some uncharted pop-esque celestial folk rock are Be Hussey (bass), Esteban Chavez (synthesizers), Scott Schaffer (Theremin and modular apparatus) and Bob Villwock (keyboards). Evaro, whose signature voice known for its sultry gentility, shows a unique impassioned strength in this project as it soars above the fusion of rhythm and melodic-synth to frame the lyrical pictures of hope within the human experience painted by this ensemble. Earth Moon Earth is the brain child of drummer/composer Daniel Joeright, and is the result of fate meeting years of experience. Joeright has been surrounded by some of the music industry’s favored sons. “I’ve been playing drums since I was about 5 years old living in Ohio,” he shared with CV Weekly. “My dad played drums in a band with his father in law (my granddad), and he would take me along to their rehearsals and gigs. Drumming just kind of rubbed off on me; it came real natural. I followed music to New York City where I was lucky enough to play with some great people, peaking at a session I was called in on by David Byrne of the Talking Heads. It was a session with singer/musician Terry Hall of the Specials and guitarist Marc Ribot who has played with the likes of Tom Waits and Elvis Costello. David Byrne was producing and also playing guitar. I was beside myself for those couple of days. Soon after that, I moved to LA and hooked up with the Rentals in 2006, mainly as the drummer, but before long, we were in my little garage studio recording the first Rentals music since 1999. It was an EP called Last Little Life. I co-produced and engineered that one in addition to collaborating on the songs and playing drums. My role after that, besides drumming, was pretty much as a quality control consultant, tweaking mixes and giving my opinions whether Matt wanted them or not! I left The Rentals in 2010, but some of my drum tracks are on the latest Rentals record which came out in 2014.” When asked how this current project came about, Joeright shared, “Every year I throw a summer solstice party called, ‘Yucca Man Shakedown,’ and we have live music. Last year, I had a friend with a short wave radio and another friend with a Theremin, so I put together a pretty unusual drum kit - a Tympani; it’s a 28” kick drum with some triggers for some odd ball samples. We did this experimental jam which went over pretty well, and we were able to create some really interesting sounds. The next day, I started recording the rhythms and sounds I had been playing but with a bit

more structure, and that was the beginning. The first song I recorded was, “It Begins,” and it features the Tympani and Theremin. I continued to whittle away at stuff over the course of the year, and as this year’s Yucca Man party was approaching, I wanted to perform these new compositions. I started making calls and assembling a band and that’s right around the time I invited Gabba (Gabriella Evaro) down for the vocal session.” “I just happened to catch Gabriella at the Trading Post doing a solo show, and when I heard her voice, I thought that it might work well with the song. I invited her down to give it a go and she nailed it! There was something about the tone of her voice that blended perfectly with the big drum sounds and the strings on the track. She improvised some pretty great lyrics right on the spot too. I was so happy! I was secretly hoping that I could convince her to sing on a few more songs, which I eventually did.” The joy was not Joeright’s alone. “Daniel asked me to sing a couple of songs for his side project,Earth Moon Earth for his annual desert party, “Yucca Man Shakedown,” Evaro shared.“What started out as just something fun, turned into so much more. I have had such a wonderful time recording with Daniel; he allowed me to really do whatever it was I wanted to vocally. He would just press record, and off I would go. From singing gibberish to singing “New Mourning (Hummingbird)”, our single, it was truly a sweet process and really, for me, my favorite way to record.” The New EP, New Single, New Album and Tour: Right now the full length album is not quite finished. “It still needs to be mixed and mastered,” Joeright explained. “But we wanted to put together an album preview and make it available for upcoming shows.

The three song CD/’Album Preview,’ will be available at our shows. We plan to release the full length album in the fall.” “This really is a special project for me because this music is something I wouldn’t have ever done,” added Evaro. “It’s been challenging in all the best ways. This year I have been pushing myself to grow in all art forms. I am loving the dance of life. I am so thrilled to going on tour. This is my first, and to be opening up for Skye and Ross of Morcheeba is amazing. I just love our Earth Moon Earth family. Wherever it may take me, I am happy and blessed, surrounded by the best musicians and hard, hard working artists. I can’t wait to see where the moon will take us next.” Their first single and video release, “New Mourning (Hummingbird),”grabs hold of your ears and will not let go until it’s had its way with your heart. It melodically wraps you in a warm sonic kaleidoscope as Evaro gently, yet poignantly, pours its relevant message over your soul. “I feel the heart

ache. That’s because the world just keeps on falling down, falling down for you, and me too.” To Evaro, these lyrics speak to what’s going on all over the world: “It addresses the weight of the pain and struggle that we’re all feeling,” shared Evaro.“Daniel had a song he was working on titled ‘New Mourning.’ It was right after another horrible news day - people suffering terrible loss. The basic concept was that every day, there is something new to mourn. I took the concept and started working out lyrics. A favorite Native American story of mine is about a hummingbird that travels to outer space, and brings back a sacred healing rock that brings harmony to the world. I thought this song could be a vehicle for me to use the hummingbird as a metaphor for us, the people, to represent strength, power and change. We are the change in the world, so ‘don’t lose sight; keep moving quickly up.’ New mourning will always come, but through mourning, we must try to ‘see and live in love.’ It’s a celebration for being human, feeling all, being present, and rising up!” This Thursday, September 1, will be one of the rare opportunities to see Earth Moon Earth locally before they head out to LA and beyond. “ENGLISH HEART” (429 RECORDS)

ack in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, Girl Groups dominated the airwaves. Acts like the Chantels and the Shirelles built on the tight harmonic blueprint created back in the ‘40s by pioneers like the Andrew Sisters and the McGuire Sisters. Incorporating Rock and R&B flourishes, their sound served as a bridge between the Doo-Wop years and the British Invasion. The formula was simple, songs limning the heartache, heartbreak, angst and teenage rebellion were written by teams of Brill Building tunesmiths and sung by girl groups with names like the Exciters, the Dixie Cups and the Shangrilas. But one iconic voice stood out from the pack and that was Ronnie Bennett of the Ronnettes. Veronica “Ronnie” Bennett was born in New York City in 1943. Her father was Irish and her mother was African American and Cherokee. Growing up in Spanish Harlem with her sister Estelle, both girls showed an early affinity for music. Inspired by protean teen sensation Frankie Lymon, the sisters began harmonizing with their cousin, Nedra Talley. Originally known as the Darling Sisters, they signed up for Amateur Night at the famous Apollo Theatre. They briefly became Ronnie And The Relatives, at this point, the girls took singing lessons during the week and played local bar mitzvahs and sock hops on the weekends. The trio was signed to Colpix Records and cut a couple of singles that failed to chart. In 1961, they were booked at the Peppermint Lounge. Although they were underage, with the help of their mothers, a surfeit of mascara and a couple cans of hairspray, the girls easily passed for 23. It was the height of the Twist craze, and initially, Ronnie, Estelle and Nedra were mistaken for dancers. But the minute they opened their mouths to sing, they were offered a permanent gig. By now they officially became the Ronettes. Two years later, completely frustrated by their lack of success at Colpix, they secured an audition with Phil Spector. The wunderkind producer had begun to make a name for himself with his lavish “wall of sound” production style. He and Lester Sill started their own label, Philles. Already viewed as “eccentric,” Spector fixated on Ronnie and wanted to sign her as a solo act. But her mother intervened and insisted it was the group or nothing. Spector had the Ronettes record a few songs

that he then released and credited to the Crystals! But in July, 1963 the trio recorded what would become the penultimate Girl Group song, “Be My Baby.” Bolstered by Spector’s arrangement and production, the song is a curious mix of Wagnerian pomp, circumstance and Rock & Roll grit. Instrumentation was provided by L.A. session players affectionately known as the Wrecking Crew, was then multi-tracked and overdubbed. Layering guitars, horns and timpani and adding an entire orchestra. Opening with an authoritative drum crack, the track is powered by Ronnie’s vocal gymnastics. Her trilling “whoa-oh-ohs” cemented the Ronettes’ place in the Rock & Roll firmament. The song is #22 in Rolling Stone’s list of 500 Greatest Songs. “Be My Baby” has haunted Beach Boys’ architect Brian Wilson, for decades. In 1965 he wrote an answer song, “Don’t Worry Baby.” It even features Cher’s first recorded performance; she added backing vocals. (Her boyfiend Sonny, intent on breaking into the music business, was working as Spector’s assistant). The Ronettes were at the height of their popularity, they toured the U.K., dated Beatles, and the Rolling Stones opened for them! British Invasion rockers were in awe of these exotic New Yorkers, with their sky-high beehive/bouffant hairdos and smoky eye make-up. Although they recorded other songs with Spector, none of them made the same indelible impression as “Be My Baby.” Phil Spector finally got his wish and he and Ronnie began a romantic relationship. Despite his possessive and erratic behavior, the couple married in 1968. At that point he not only made her give up music, he literally locked her away, by putting a lock on the outside of their Los Angeles mansion, and surrounding her with armed guards. A prisoner for several years, Spector even hid her shoes so she couldn’t leave. Finally, when her mother was visiting, the pair plotted Ronnie’s escape. In 1972 she managed to get out of the house, barefoot, and she never returned. Spector’s madness and mania only accelerated. On separate occasions he famously pulled guns on John Lennon, Leonard Cohen and the Ramones. His rage culminated in 2003 when he shot and killed actress Lana Clarkson in his Alhambra mansion. He was convicted of second degree murder and is currently serving a 19 year-

to-life sentence in prison. Ronnie detailed it all in her 1989 memoir, “Be My Baby: How I Survived Mascara, Mini-Skirts And Madness.” In the late ‘90s she took Spector to court and won a judgement awarding the Ronettes 2.6 million in owed royalties. But the legacy of Phil Spector has been an albatross around Ronnie’s neck. She resumed recording a few years after her escape, making good albums that got lost in the shuffle, (1980’s Siren and the 1999 EP She Talks To Rainbows.) Or good ideas smothered in ‘80s production values (1987’s Unfinished Business). In the 21st century Ronnie returned with 2003’s Something’s Gonna Happen and 2006’s Last Of The Rock Stars. In the decade since her influence seemed explicit with the emergence of Amy Winehouse. The late British chanteuse not only shared similar vocal traits, but also an affinity for the beehived bad girl look. As an acknowledgement to her troubled and supremely talented acolyte, she added Amy’s signature song, “Back To Black” so her live sets a few months before Amy Winehouse passed away. Now Ronnie has returned with her sixth solo effort, English Heart. Here, she cherry-picks 11 of her favorite British Invasion classics. The album kicks off on a somber note with Lulu’s “Oh Me Oh My (I’m A Fool For You Baby).” Fingersnap percussion clicks like a metronome over Hammond B3 and languid acoustic and electric guitars. Whereas Lulu seemed slightly lovesick and desperate, the doyenne of Girl Groups sounds self-assured and confident. Time hasn’t done Ronnie’s voice any favors (neither have the Marlboro 100s), there’s a bit more vibrato when she holds a note. But she still dominates each song. On some tracks, like

“Because” by the Dave Clark Five and “Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying,” a #4 hit for Gerry And The Pacemakers, she plays it relatively straight, sticking pretty closely to the template of the originals. Naturally, she tackles Beatles and Stones tracks, but she doesn’t go for the obvious hits. In fact the Rolling Stones song, “I’d Much Rather Be With The Boys,” was a demo written in 1964, that didn’t see the light of day until it was released in 1975, on an odds and sods collection entitled “Metamorphosis.” Ronnie cloaks the track in a party-time patina, replete with syncopated hand claps and recasts the lyrics as a positive Girl Power anthem. She also digs deep into the Fab Four catalog for the winsome “I’ll Follow The Sun.” Here the stripped-down instrumentation is pared down to feathery finger-picked acoustic arpeggios. The best songs on “English Heart” get thoroughly “Ronnie-ized,” which is to say there’s a specter of Spector in each arrangement. “Tell Her No,” the Baroque Bacharach pastiche that gave the Zombies their second Top 10 hit in 1965, is accelerated to a caffeinated tempo. “Girl Don’t Come” was a huge hit for Sandie Shaw in Great Britain, but is relatively unknown here in America. Another fast-paced track, it weds a hip-swiveling rhythm, roiling bass lines and slinky, chicken-scratch guitar licks, as Ronnie’s insouciant vocals crest over the top. Finally, she takes a pass at the Animals’ signature hit, “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.” Re-calibrating the jumped-up jittery Blues, she blends a jaunty hand-clap beat with a wash of Wurlitzer, mellotron and Farfisa org an. Where Eric Burdon seemed anguished, Ronnie is matterof-fact. If you misunderstand her, there might be potential consequences. Other interesting tracks include fairly straight forward takes on the Kinks’ “Tired Of Waiting” and the relatively obscure Fortunes song, “You’ve Got Your Troubles.” The record closes with her soulful version of the quavery Bee Gees weeper, “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart.” It was a clever idea to have Ronnie Spector put her stamp on these timeless classics, it’s kind of surprising no one thought to do it before now. Regardless, It’s great to have her back.

ROBERT BELL – PHOTOGRAPHING LIFE

R

obert Bell comes to the desert with a ready smile, a bit of the midcentury vibe, a bit of the tiki lounge sensibility, a bit of the rockabilly thing and a whole lot of artistry. Or, as Robert is oft to quote Garrison Keillor, “Where the women are strong, the men are good looking, and the children are above average.” As a child, Robert moved frequently. “We were a bit nomadic. We lived in various places in Minnesota and Washington. That type of lifestyle cause one to see the world differently. The things people take for granted in an area were also very new to my eyes. I think my photographer’s eye development stated then.” “We were living in Austin, Minnesota. Austin was settled along the Cedar River. It is home to two lakes, East Side and Mill Pond. Did I mention both are man-made? Austin is probable better known as SPAM Town USA, the home of Hormel Food Corporation. And way – it was in high school in Austin that really began to explore photography.” “I began when people shot film. I would shoot and develop. With film three is always that moment when you wonder if you capture the shot or not. Digital means I can look at the photo seconds after I shoot. There is no guessing. No mystery.” “After High School I attended Dakota County Vocational School, in Rosemount, Minnesota. The two-year Photographic Technology course they offered was more technical and less art focused. But knowing the how made the process easier. I knew the limitations of the camera and the eye. I learned how to move past those limitations. Most importantly, I had two years of with film and paper!” The weather in Minnesota can be harsh in the winter. “While I was attending school the winter temperature hit 100 below 0. I thought it was time to seek someplace warmer. I headed west – Seattle and embarked on a series of jobs. From office drone, waiter, and custom cabinetry and to Licensed Massage Therapist, I worked and shot photos. I traveled and shot. The consistent thing was always photography.” “Being a bit nomadic, traveling always

fascinated me. Each place is full of never sights for me to capture. I have been fortunate to have traveled to Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, Cayman Island and Cuba. I have also traveled the Western US. All along I take, you guess it, photos!” “When I moved to Palm Springs, I was captivated by what I saw. The midcentury, tiki vibe is nothing compared with the friends I have made here. I work as a massage therapist and photographer. The area has been good to me.” “Bill and Andy at Townie Bagels have given me a very public space to show my work. My first show here in Palm Springs CarArt revolved around the artistic details of classic American cars of the past. My latest show, And Now for Something Completely Different, is currently at Townie Bagels. In this show I concentrate less on cars and nature and more on moments of life. Small details that are often overlooked make for powerful photographs.” “I have been many things over my life. My art is a reflection of all those things. And Now for Something Completely Different helps prove that very point! Life is a journey that I reflect in my photo.” For more info about Robert, contact him at bobrobertbell@gmail.com. SANDY MILLER, DOG TRAINER EXTRAORDINAIRE!

D

o you wish Sparkey would stop jumping up on your guests? Would you like your dog to do tricks? Does your dog become anxious when you leave the house? Meet Sandy Miller, Coachella Valley dog trainer who once trained dogs of the rich and famous in Hollywood. Sandy works with dogs and their owners on many training challenges including digging, dog-child adjustment issues, fence jumping, potty training, excessive barking, and more. Does she train the dog or the owner? Sandy answers, “While the dog and its behavior is changed, it’s really the human who gets trained.” Sandy Miller has over 40 years of experience in her field and has trained over 10,000 dogs. She always loved animals and thought about becoming a veterinarian. She found a job managing a pet hotel in West Los Angeles. George, the pet hotel’s owner, trained dogs. George challenged Sandy to train a Labrador puppy, and Sandy found she had a knack for this work. Later she was laid off from a job as a Reproduction Typing Supervisor, and found herself exploring options. She launched a dog training business when she spent $7.95 to make a flyer, distributing it to the vets and groomers she knew from the pet hotel days. Sandy’s first client was actress Liza Minelli who sought help with a mix breed dog she

rescued in Mexico. Her client base grew to include the pooches of notable Hollywood folks Michael Caine, Mel Brooks, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Olivia Newton John, Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner, Jacqueline Smith, and Tina Sinatra. Other clients, Barry Manilow and Keely Smith, have roots in the Coachella Valley. Sandy trained the English Sheepdog in the Katherine Hepburn movie, “Olly Olly Oxen Free.” Pongo, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier owned by Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft, was one of her most challenging cases. “He was physically a very strong dog, and he would dig up everything. He’d pull these huge banana trees out by the roots. Mel and Anne worked with me, but Pongo usually got the best of us all!” Finally Sandy determined the dog was bored and developed some alternative activities. In a humorous moment, working with a dog on the “down” command, Sandy noticed the owner ineffectively repeating “down, down” in very soft voice.....when Sandy used a firmer tone “Down!” both dog and human dropped to the ground. Sandy describes her style, “I’m very quiet and low keyed. The dog immediately knows I’m the alpha. I don’t know what it is I exude, but it’s there. Positive reinforcement and praise enhances the dog’s confidence. No negative or inhumane devices are used. Understanding the needs of my human clients is also of utmost

importance. I work with the whole family.” I have witnessed Sandy’s rapport with dogs, and she has an innate gift to transform the most challenging dogs, including puppy mill dogs that have never been socialized. Sandy offers advice to house train a new dog. “People do not understand how to house train. They smack the dog or stick his face in its feces which is not the best way. It’s best to set up a schedule and take the dog outside at set times and reward with a treat when they potty outside. If they have an accident inside, ignore it, otherwise you’re unintentionally drawing attention to bad behavior. For more difficult situations, hook them to a short leash and attach

to your belt or waist. You can also hook the leash under the leg of a table and the dog won’t go in its immediate space inside the home.” Another idea for a male “leg lifter” who marks his territory in a new home is to purchase a “male wrap” from PetSmart or PetCo. Easy methods to correct behavior include the use of a spray water bottle, but never spray directly in the dog’s face. Sandy likes the “Pet Corrector” spray canister to correct problem barking and jumping up, but advises owners to keep the canister hidden before using or it loses its value. An obedience trained dog is a happy dog. Sandy explains, “If it’s done right, the dog absolutely loves it. He gets the attention he wants, he knows where he stands, and he knows the rules. When you train correctly and consistently, they love you all the more for it.” Sandy volunteers her time to help Loving All Animals’ adopters and foster parents with their rescue dogs. Contact Loving All Animals about their programs at (760) 834-7000. Contact Sandy Miller at (760) 360-4085 and by email at tendertutor@msn.com. THE VINO VOICE

BY RICK RIOZZA

THE SLOW HOT WIND

A

s I converse with my wine friends & networks across the nation, already they are gearing up for a full array of autumn reds to talk about—hey! Hold on there pardner! I just saw a rattlesnake come out of its burrow, which I think signifies six more weeks of hot summer air remaining. In the midst of some slow hot wind swirling, recently I’ve had some very excellent and tasty wine that I’d like to alert upon: I’ve used the line “Stoller is Stellar!” numerous times in this column, no doubt to the thrill and happiness of the winery and its marketing team. Now if it were a secret, consider this an eye-opener because I’m letting it out-of-the-bag. But it’s no secret, this wine producer, Stoller Family Estate, continues to make some tasty stuff and provides it for a reasonably good price for the quality. For instance, I had a 2014 Stoller Dundee Hills Oregon Reserve Chardonnay, around $25, in the fridge just waiting for its time to take over to Roy’s Restaurant in Rancho Mirage during one of their dinner deals. They’ve a good wine list for matching their yummy Hawaiian fusion menu—but I’ve paired Stoller Chard previously with their fish entrée and it’s wonderful! So I don’t mind the small corkage fee. But it didn’t happen. Last Friday my family prepared a delicious dinner tuna salad with fresh veggies, sliced root vegetables and all the usual trimmings. Here, I’d automatically go for a chilled Sauv blanc, but I didn’t have any—shame on me! However the Roy’s destined Stoller was staring me in the face. So what’s our wine mantra?—that’s right: Seize the moment! I threw the bottle in a bucket of some salty ice water for a quick fix. Being politically correct, this wine-salad pairing was fit for a king and a queen, a prince and princess. Culinary correctness ruled the day as there was no influence of oak and that made for a fresh and crisp nose of Bartlett pear, ripe white peach, Mandarin orange and lemon. The bright acidity behind the nuanced tropical fruit flavors brought the salad meal to new heights.

A month prior, in the heat of the night, we fiercely fried up some delicious pankocrusted cod fish. I had just completed drinking through a slew of Sauv blanc for a wine review article, so we were out of the stuff that I would normally drink with fish. (This is sounding familiar.) Anyway—I had an Italian Montefalco white wine in the fridge, and, its time was to shine. Many wine enthusiasts have heard of the Trebbiano grape but are unable to describe its flavor qualities. Actually, it’s grown throughout all of Italy—every area having a “Trebbiano d’this area or that”. And it’s the grape used to produce the real balsamic vinegar up in Modena. But once an enthusiast tastes the Trebbiano from Montefalco in Umbria, they never forget its flavor profile: in other words, the trebb produced in this area may be the best around. I opened up the chilled 2015 Perticaia Spoleto DOC, and it immediately burst tropical fruit fragrances along with lemon blossom and citrus. As to flavor, the palate delivers layers of lemon cream, orange peel and that Italian almond bitter note, accompanied with enlivening acidity. And that’s the wonder of the wine here. The Perticaia is a full-bodied wine with 12% alcohol. Most often that translates to a “heavy wine”, like a full-on Chardonnay. But this Trebbiano drinks like a clean Sauvignon Blanc—very refreshing and a great match for seaside cuisine. If you haven’t yet, I’d recommend being the first on your block to showcase this wine. It’s such an impressive change from the more

popular Pinot Grigio. And it’s a great buy at only $15 or so. Check out Total Wine & More, Palm Desert. By the way—another tasty Chardonnay that always complements fish and seafood fantastically is the MacRostie Sonoma Coast, around $20. The winemakers consistently produce juice that owns aromas of lemon peel, green melon rind and young pineapple; with flavors of vibrant grapefruit, lemon-laced tangerine, white peach notes, and of course that zesty acidity that makes it a great grab for the meal. We’ve written recently on Italian Prosecco and there are all levels of quality to prices. Fortunately lower-priced Prosecco is often a

“better flavor” buy than comparably priced sparkling wine. However stepping up to a more posh Prosecco can be a wonderful lesson in wine appreciation. There’s an immediate realization that the slightly more expensive Prosecco is improved up on every level of acidity, minerality, fresh fruit nuances, and balance by the better producer. The single-vineyard Bisol ‘Crede’ Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG Brut is produced from the Glera grape varietal, together with touch of Pinot Bianco and Verdiso grapes grown on the steep south-facing hills of Bisol’s vineyards in Valdobbiadene. It’s a brilliant yellow-green color wine with a fruity bouquet that is reflected in its flavor of green apples and pears with balanced acidity. And at only 11.5% alcohol, it’s the wine that fills in perfectly on a hot day. This Crede is the Prosecco to calmly sit in the warm air and enjoy. By itself or pretty much with any meal, this is the wine that makes one feel grateful: a sparkler that perhaps promotes a humble contemplation. A champagne of this quality would cost in the neighborhood of over $60. This Bisol at $25 is such a tasty value. Cheers!

THE ART OF FEAR NOW PLAYING: DON’T BREATHE

I think it was Alfred Hitchcock who said the secret of suspense is the friction of hope and fear rubbing together. I have always appreciated the art of creating fear whether in books or movies. I love this very smart and twisty premise that forces us to sympathize with home invaders and not the residents. Exactly who is the victim here? This minimalist take on the old but reliable haunted house horror genre is creepily effective with scares that will make you squirm or jump depending only on ho hard you are gripping the armrests of the chair you’re in. The isolated Detroit setting adds immensely to the chills when three heedless thieves break into the home of

a rich blind man (Stephen Lang) thinking they are pulling off the perfect heist and it’s gonna be easy pickings. I don’t have to tell you how wrong they are. I was blown away by the exquisite set-up of the story and how surprising and disturbing the delicious shocks that followed. I think I literally held my breath for much of the next 90 minutes. I definitely remained uncomfortable through but in a very good way. We like scary movies because they are a safe way to face our fears. So, a big recommendation for one of very best horror flicks of the year. Cowriter/director Fede Alvarez has made a cult classic. Consider this chilling and deeply unsettling thriller an early Halloween treat. NEW FOR THE HOME THEATER: THE JUNGLE BOOK With the heavy load of disappointing reboots and sequels on the big screen so far in 2016, this beautiful rendition of Rudyard Kipling’s beloved tale of a young boy growing up in the jungles of northern India

and superb craftsmanship. I can’t wait for another chance to enter Mowgli’s world. This is cinematic state of the art and it is spectacular. Nice extras include a terrific commentary from Favreau as well as a couple of making-of featurettes. Highest recommendation. Disney. Blu-ray. THE ONES BELOW

a companion piece to Disney’s fine “Tarzan” upgrade released a few weeks earlier. In fact, this beautiful version of Kipling’s tale can almost be enjoyed as a Tarzan origin story although it is not. However, in many ways, it is a sweet companion piece to Burroughs’ iconic tale. Director John Favreau has gone to great lengths to create a photo-realistic, live -action adventure that makes young Mowgli’s world tactile, immersive and believable. Neel Seth is just about perfect as the “man cub.” Wonderful voice work imbues all the talking animals with a verisimilitude of nuanced personality traits. Standouts are Scarlett Johansson, Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba and Christopher Walken (he gives voice to Louis the Monkey King and he is superb). For a generation that still hold Disney’s wonderful 1967 animated version close to their hearts, this film will never fully supplant the classic hand-drawn version. However, this lush iteration references some of the classic beats of the former and is eye-popping and satisfying. It has received global acclaim from critics and audiences alike. So far, the theatrical release has earned about a billion bucks. This greatlooking home version will only further stuff the Disney coffers. It’s a perfect family film that will be watched again and again if not for the story then for the breathtaking art

Written and directed by David Farr (“The Night Manager”), the intense psychological thriller features riveting performances from Cléménce Poésy (“Harry Potter”), BAFTA nominee David Morrissey, Stephen Campbell Moore and Laura Birn. Expecting their first child, Kate (Poésy) and Justin (Moore) become friendly with their new neighbors, Jon (Morrissey) and Theresa (Birn), who are also expecting, in the downstairs apartment. Things take a dark turn after a dinner party upstairs and the new neighbors start to show sinister intentions toward Kate and Justin after an unfortunate tragedy strikes. The relationship turns threatening, leaving the couple fearful for their well-being. With an ending that leaves an unsettling feeling of despair, this psychological battle of wills with the tenants in the apartment downstairs continuously grasps the tension and tone, keeping the dread and suspense cranked up to an all-time high. Make no mistake, this smart psychodrama is relentless. I loved it. Magnolia Entertainment. Blu-ray. Comments? RobinESimmons@aol.com

BOOK REVIEW

ELECTION YEAR

-----------------------------------------------------

“EXTREME PREY” BY JOHN SANDFORD FICTION

----------------------------------------------------t is only weeks away until the citizens of this country will elect a new President. It has been a strange and wild campaign season and the craziness is not just about voting. In John Sandford’s 26th “Prey” installment, Extreme Prey (G.P. Putnam, 408 pages) dangerous politics reaches across the aisle. Returning protagonist Lucas Davenport is enjoying building his cabin in the woods. He is no longer employed as a Minnesota lawman and he doesn’t care. But when the Governor calls to ask him to look into a possible death threat, Davenport is back on the job only this time as a private investigator. Although unannounced, the Governor, Elmer Henderson, is planning a run for President or at the very least hopes to be considered for vice president. Officially

running for the highest office in the land is his Democratic opponent Michaela Bowden. Some of Governor Henderson’s supporters have expressed extreme beliefs. He believes a woman and her son may be out to kill his Democratic rival Bowden. Putting politics aside, the Governor wants to make sure the duo is all talk and no action. So Davenport is sent to work with Bowden’s security team as she campaigns in Iowa. Davenport eventually discovers the mother belongs to a fringe political group filled with rage and hatred “of obvious injustice and the crushing of the small and helpless by the steel wheels of American plutocracy.” The group’s leader blames Jews for all that is wrong in the world. These are crazy folks! Beside the death threats, others in the organization are murdered and it becomes clear that the mother and her son do indeed plan to kill Bowden and do it during the Iowa County Fair. Time is running out and Davenport does his best to prevent any further killing, but sometimes evil can’t be stopped. This is a timely mystery since it’s election season in the novel and in reality. Extreme Prey was released in May and the author capitalizes on recent political headlines. It is

easy to think about the Trump and Clinton campaigns. This makes the story more compelling than if it were not a general election year. The narrative unfolds honestly and organically as Davenport is challenged to find the extremists. It’s exciting as he figures out who the bad guys are. I was most intrigued by the extremist mother and her family. I wanted to understand and get some insight into these “crazy” people’s perspective. Why do they think Bowden is a threat to their lives and country? Their hatred doesn’t appear to be because she’s a woman. They are patriotic, pay their taxes and work hard. Other’s in the weird political organization believe Bowden is the best candidate to represent their ideology. They identify more closely to the Democratic Party. Most

of the organization’s complaints are thirty or more years old and stem from the farm crisis. So what is their beef? Although Extreme Prey is set with a political backdrop, it stays away from politics. I was disappointed that the author did not take the opportunity to deliver a psychological profile of extremism within the narrative. Nor did he take time to debate these people’s position and argue its merits or deficiencies. Just calling the mother insane is not enough. The mother is a hard working, strong woman who loves her family. What made her evil? Is she evil because she wants a different world? Where did she go off the rails and why was her extremism never addressed, argued or answered? I am always looking for more meaning, understanding and ideas even if the story is a simple suspense thriller. We all know people who are voting for the “other” candidate. They are not bad people, but it can be a mystery or hard to comprehend. It all seems extreme in this election.

TOUCH OF THE VAPERS

B

ack in 1939 in the movie “Gone with the Wind,” Scarlett O’Hara told Rhett Butler that she was “overcome by the vapors”. Once upon a time, the vapors were a catch-all phrase used to reflect any number of health issues that might affect women. The vapors might be something as simple as a gassy stomach or as complex as a serious mental condition. In the modern world, the vapers (replace the ‘o’ with an ‘e’) have taken a whole new meaning. In 2004, a Chinese medical researcher named Hon Lik lost his father to lung cancer. This caused him to want to quit smoking so he began using nicotine patches. One night, he forgot to remove the patch and had a fitful sleep where he dreamt that he was drowning in the ocean and with his lungs filling with water. Just as he was about to drown, the water transformed into a harmless vapor that he could easily breathe. With this, Lik found his inspiration and created the e-cigarette which used a battery in a plastic cartridge and a nicotine solution suspended in propylene glycol that was vaporized for inhalation with an atomizer.

Interestingly, Lik was not the first to have this vision. A patent was filed in 1962 by Herbert A. Gilbert showing the design of an e-cigarette that looks similar to Hon Lik’s invention. Gilbert states that his invention never found traction in the United States as the tobacco companies wanted to wait for his patent rights to expire before exploiting his invention. It is more likely that the tobacco companies did not want to upset their very lucrative business model. The term vaping was first used in 1980 when J. Phillip Ray created a smokeless cigarette which was simply paper soaked in nicotine. This idea and other similar patents were bought by the tobacco companies in order to suppress these new ideas in order to preserve their business models. Is Vaping Safe?

Studies have proven that vaping is 95% safer than a traditional cigarette. This is because a vaping pen or e-cigarette does not leave tar in your lungs or contain the numerous toxins contained in tobacco cigarettes. The main ingredient used in vaping is propylene glycol which is a key ingredient used in asthma inhalers. As such, you would assume that vaping is safe, right? The American Lung Association expressed concerns that vaping may have serious health consequences as the vaping industry lacks regulation thus allowing the industry to potentially put anything that it wants in the liquids that vapers inhale. As an example, nicotine can be used in any strength that a merchant wants without restriction. Numerous studies have found

that nicotine is as addictive as heroin or cocaine. Other studies conclude that longterm or excessive intake of nicotine can lead to cardiac problems while harming brain development. Another serious concern is that nicotine may be a ‘tumor promoter’. While the nicotine itself may not be carcinogenic, early studies in animals are finding that it may play a role in promoting one’s susceptibility to cancers of the colon, pancreas, esophagus and mouth. There are additional concerns that lungs may scar from vaping which could cause health problems later in life. Due to all of these concerns, the FDA recently released new regulations on the industry that will prohibit sales to minors while requiring a Premarket Tobacco Application on every vaping product in a process that is similar to that experienced by the beer industry. While the verdict may still be out on the safety of vaping, it is clear that vaping is a healthier choice than tobacco smoking. DRIVE SAFELY OVER LABOR DAY 2016

L

abor Day is around the corner. It is a holiday when our neighbors do not always use good common sense while celebrating the holiday weekend. We all attend BBQ’S and parties where we eat and drink with impunity. We do not plan ahead and think of how much we have had to drink and instinctively get behind the wheel and drive. Drivers honestly believe the beers or margaritas they consumed did not affect them until they get stopped or get in an accident....and then need my help for both. So drive extra carefully during this weekend. I use to open my LEGAL Radio Show with “People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan”. So plan ahead today and decide on a designated driver. As an alternative you can use the services of a limo or driver for hire services if you are not going to take a taxi or Uber. When there is an accident with a DUI the police and DA take months to investigate the case BEFORE filing a DUI charge. Unfortunately the DA does not always send the driver a notice that the case has been filed. Thus many people assume there was no filing and they have a VALID CDL. If you are involved in an accident use your cell phone to take picture of the cars and parties. You can use your phone to record the names, address, emails and

phone number of all parties and wits....as well as recording their admissions. IF you are injured you should go to the hospital or ER. Prepare a summary of your injuries starting with the top of your head going down to the bottom of your toes and list what is hurting you then call a lawyer. If one gets cited/arrested for a DUI their license is taken from them and a pink temporary license for 30 days is given to you. It explains that their license is valid for 30 days and then suspended for 4-5 months. The driver must contact DMV and request a hearing with San Bernardino or Palm Spring DMV and also request a STAY...within 10 days. Without the STAY, after 30 days you are driving on a suspended license and if stopped for anything you could be arrested and face up to 10 days in jail. In California they do not have to send the arrestee Notice of the Suspension of their driver’s license. After an adverse DMV FINDING from a DUI Hearing OR after a 1st time COURT CONVICTION the DMV in Sacramento will suspend your California Driver’s License for 4-5 months. However after 30 days of suspension, you can get a restricted license to drive to and from work and classes. Contact me for the ABC’s of a DUI which tells you what to do. I would be happy to send it to you.

BY JENNY WALLIS

“.. BUT HERE I AM AGAIN QUESTIONING IT.”

D

ear Jenny, I am so addicted to my ex. He’s literally a drug. It’s like an addict that only needs one more hit to be hooked again. I can’t stay away from him. Every fiber of my being knows he will never fully commit yet my need for him in my life is stronger than my will to move on. He’s just as addicted to me and I know we love each other, but it’s intense and irrational. He will never deny me or say no which makes it so much harder to stay away. I love him deeply. We were together for 11 years and 6 months. The last time we said goodbye, I was sure it was really the end, but here I am again questioning it and giving it another chance. What do I do? Thanks, Charlotte -----------------------------------------------Hi Charlotte, That is quite the question! Let’s see if I can understand what you are asking. Are you asking how to get over your previous relationship or are you asking why the relationship you keep returning to never works out? I guess that it doesn’t really matter. Both questions have the same answer, you are so unhappy being single that you would rather be in an unhealthy, unfulfilling, unsuccessful relationship. Tell me Charlotte, why are you unhappy being single? What does being single mean to you? Does it mean you are not good enough? Good enough for a successful relationship? Good enough for real, happy, mind-blowing love? You have to watch the good enough statements…they can be dangerous! Whatever gave you the impression you weren’t enough, enough of anything? There are times when most all of us feel we are not enough, it’s a pretty “normal” emotion. How we respond to it is the important thing. Whenever we have a case of the not enoughs; not tall enough, not pretty enough, not smart enough we need to immediately get real with ourselves. Say, either to yourself, or out loud, “I am enough.”

I know it sounds like you have an enormous problem. You even described it as a mental addiction. But if we truly believe that we are enough, there is no way we would let something like this happen. If you are enough, you don’t look for someone to complete you. When the time comes and you allow someone into your life that person compliments you. Not some of the time, not most of the time, not once in a while, all of the time. Everything until then is just dress rehearsal! Hearing you describe what you have Charlotte, doesn’t sound very healthy! You said it yourself. It doesn’t even sound like love, of any kind. You said it best when you said you were addicted. You are looking for something to be provided to you. Something that will make you feel better about yourself, something that will make you feel you are enough. Unfortunately, we can never look outside ourselves for anything, least of all love. Love can only be found within, it’s our job to let it blossom. But when we are addicted to something, we are always looking outside. The first step in moving forward is affirming to yourself that you are enough and really believing it. Once this happens, problems that you currently have melt away, because there is no room for them. People who we needed and couldn’t be without, will become less important and our whole view of them will shift! Our whole view of life will shift! But it can only be found inside of us, never outside. Don’t worry though, it sounds like he is looking outside as well! NFL CHANGES RULES & US OPEN PREDICTIONS..

A

little over a month ago owners approved seven new rules for the 2016 season. There were still several more proposed rule changes being discussed on in the following weeks. Of those, three more were approved. For next season, the ball will be placed on the 25-yard line following touchbacks on kickoffs instead of the 20. Following the season, the rule will be re-visited and the decision will be made as to whether or not it will be made permanent. Another rule which was approved for a preliminary, one-year trial was the automatic ejection rule, which was suggested by Commissioner Roger Goodell. The rule will eject any player who is flagged for two personal foul penalties in a game. Finally, it was passed that the player on injured reserve-designated to return will no longer be required to be selected in advance. Any player on IR can return after six weeks, but teams are only allowed to have one player return, as had been the case in previous years. That change was not among those proposed earlier this week. Other rule changes include: - Permanently moves the line of scrimmage for Try kicks to the defensive team’s 15-yard line, and allows the defense to return any missed Try. - Permits the offensive and defensive play callers on the coaching staffs to use the coach-to-player communication system regardless of whether they are on the field or in the coaches’ booth. - Makes all chop blocks illegal. - Expands the horse collar rule to include when a defender grabs the jersey at the name plate or above and pulls a runner toward the ground. - Makes it a foul for delay of game when a team attempts to call a timeout when it is not permitted to do so. - Eliminates the five-yard penalty for an eligible receiver illegally touching a forward pass after being out of bounds and re-establishing himself inbounds, and makes it a loss of down.

- Eliminates multiple spots of enforcement for a double foul after a change of possession. And in other news… The US Open is one of the most anticipated tennis events every year. It’s also the last opportunity for the world’s best players to win a Grand Slam tournament before the 2016 season ends. Here are our predictions for the men’s and women’s tournaments in Flushing Meadows. Men’s Tournament: Novak Djokovic, Serbia Djokovic remains the favorite to win this tournament, both among most fans and most oddsmakers in Las Vegas, but it hasn’t been an easy year for the Serbian superstar. He looked primed for a Grand Slam run after winning the first two majors of the year in the Australian Open and French Open. But then he was stunningly upset in the third round at Wimbledon and was even more surprisingly eliminated in the first round of the men’s singles tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Djokovic has been to six of the last seven Grand Slam tournament finals, and he’s won five of them. He’s also been to five of the last six US Open finals, which includes wins in 2011 and 2015. A motivated Djokovic ultimately will be too tough for the rest of the field in New York. He’s too talented to suffer crushing defeats in three straight high-profile tournaments. Women’s Tournament: Serena Williams, USA Williams entered the 2015 US Open looking invincible, but her quest for a calendar grand slam was ended in the semifinal with a loss to Roberta Vinci. Williams didn’t play her best in Rio, but she’s been fantastic in Grand Slam tournaments this season. After losing in the final of the Australian Open and French Open, the 22-time Grand Slam singles champion broke through at Wimbledon. She has won this tournament six times, including a streak of three titles in a row from 2012 through 2014. Look for Williams’ service game, athleticism and experience to carry her to another US Open title.

Week of September 1

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Truth decay is in its early stages. If you take action soon, you can prevent a full-scale decomposition. But be forewarned: Things could get messy, especially if you intervene with the relentless candor and clarity that will be required for medicinal purification. So what do you think? Are you up for the struggle? I understand if you’re not. I’ll forgive you if you simply flee. But if you decide to work your cagey magic, here are some tips. 1. Compile your evidence with rigor. 2. As much as is humanly possible, put aside rancor. Root your efforts in compassionate objectivity. 3. Even as you dig around in the unsightly facts, cherish the beautiful truths you’d like to replace them with. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Are you willing to lose at least some of your inhibitions? Are you curious to find out what it feels like to cavort like a wise wild child? If you want to fully cooperate with life’s plans, you will need to consider those courses of action. I am hoping that you’ll accept the dare, of course. I suspect you will thrive as you explore the pleasures of playful audacity and whimsical courage and effervescent experiments. So be blithe, Taurus! Be exuberant! Be open to the hypothesis that opening to jaunty and jovial possibilities is the single most intelligent thing you can do right now. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): What’s the current status of your relationship with your feet? Have you been cultivating and cherishing your connection with the earth below you? The reason I ask, Gemini, is that right now it’s especially important for you to enjoy intimacy with gravity, roots, and foundations. Whatever leads you down and deeper will be a source of good fortune. Feeling grounded will provide you with an aptitude for practical magic. Consider the possibilities of going barefoot, getting a foot massage, or buying a new shoes that are both beautiful and comfortable. CANCER (June 21-July 22): A woman in the final stages of giving birth may experience acute discomfort. But once her infant spills out into the world, her distress can transform into bliss. I don’t foresee quite so dramatic a shift for you, Cancerian. But the transition you undergo could have similar elements: from uncertainty to grace; from agitation to relief; from constriction to spaciousness. To take maximum advantage of this blessing, don’t hold onto the state you’re leaving behind -- or the feelings it aroused in you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In one of my dreams last night, a Leo sensualist I know advised me to take smart pills and eat an entire chocolate cheesecake before writing my next Leo horoscope. In another dream, my Leo friend Erica suggested that I compose your horoscope while attending an orgy where all the participants were brilliant physicists, musicians, and poets. In a third dream, my old teacher Rudolf (also a Leo) said I should create the Leo horoscope as I sunbathed on a beach in Maui while being massaged by two sexy geniuses. Here’s how I interpret my dreams: In the coming days, you can literally increase your intelligence by indulging in luxurious comforts and sensory delights. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Play a joke on your nervous anxiety. Leap off the ground or whirl in a circle five times as you shout, “I am made of love!” Learn the words and melody to a new song that lifts your mood whenever you sing it. Visualize yourself going on an adventure that will amplify your courage and surprise your heart. Make a bold promise to yourself, and acquire an evocative object that will symbolize your intention to fulfill that promise. Ask yourself a soul-shaking question you haven’t been wise enough to investigate before now. Go to a wideopen space, spread your arms out in a greeting to the sky, and pray for a vision of your next big goal. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): The Illuminati do not want you to receive the prophecy I have prepared for you. Nor do the Overlords of the New World Order, the Church of the SubGenius, the Fake God that masquerades as the Real God, or the nagging little

voice in the back of your head. So why am I going ahead and divulging this oracle anyway? Because I love you. My loyalty is to you, not those shadowy powers. Therefore, I am pleased to inform you that the coming weeks will be a favorable time for you to evade, ignore, undermine, or rebel against controlling influences that aren’t in alignment with your soul’s goals. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): The dictionary says that the verb “to schmooze” means to chat with people in order to promote oneself or make a social connection that may prove to be advantageous. But that definition puts a selfish spin on an activity that can, at least sometimes, be carried out with artful integrity. Your assignment in the coming weeks is to perform this noble version of schmoozing. If you are offering a product or service that is beautiful or useful or both, I hope you will boost its presence and influence with the power of your good listening skills and smart conversations. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): If you are attuned with the cosmic rhythms in the coming weeks, you will be a source of teaching and leadership. Allies will feel fertilized by your creative vigor. You’ll stimulate team spirit with your savvy appeals to group solidarity. If anyone can revive droopy procrastinators and demonstrate the catalytic power of gratitude, it’ll be you. Have you heard enough good news, Sagittarius, or can you absorb more? I expect that you’ll inspire interesting expressions of harmony that will replace contrived versions of togetherness. And every blessing you bestow will expand your capacity for attracting favors you can really use. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The fictional character known as Superman has one prominent vulnerability: the mineral kryptonite. When he’s near this stuff, it weakens his superpowers and may cause other problems. I think we all have our own versions of kryptonite, even if they’re metaphorical. For instance, my own superpowers tend to decline when I come into the presence of bad architecture, cheesy poetry, and off-pitch singing. How about you, Capricorn? What’s your version of kryptonite? Whatever it is, I’m happy to let you know that you are currently less susceptible to its debilitating influences than usual. Why? Well, you have a sixth sense about how to avoid it. And even if it does draw near, you have in your repertoire some new tricks to keep it from sapping your strength. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): It’s quite possible you will receive seductive proposals in the coming weeks. You may also be invited to join your fortunes with potential collaborators who have almost fully awakened to your charms. I won’t be surprised if you receive requests to share your talents, offer your advice, or bestow your largesse. You’re a hot prospect, my dear. You’re an attractive candidate. You appear to be ripe for the plucking. How should you respond? My advice is to be flattered and gratified, but also discerning. Just because an inquiry is exciting doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Choose carefully. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Would you like to become a master of intimacy? Can you imagine yourself handling the challenges of togetherness with the skill of a great artist and the wisdom of a love genius? If that prospect appeals to you, now would be a favorable time to up your game. Here’s a hot tip on how to porceed: You must cultivate two seemingly contradictory skills. The first is the capacity to identify and nurture the best qualities in your beloved friend. The second is the ability to thrive on the fact that healthy relationships require you to periodically wrestle with each other’s ignorance and immaturity. Homework: All of us are trying to wake up from our sleepy delusions about the nature of life. What’s your most potent wake-up technique? ---------------------------------------Rob Brezsny Free Will Astrology freewillastrology@freewillastrology.com

MIND,BODY & SPIRIT

THE GIFT OF GIVING

G

iving connects us to others. Research shows being magnanimous provides a sense of fulfillment. Also, it provides a sense of well being for all concerned. Giving creates stronger bonds with family and friends. Serving others allows us to connect with our community as well. It’s not all about money – we can give of our time, energy, ideas, and so much more. Each of us has personal goals, dreams, and aspirations. Others near you are trying to achieve their personal endeavors as well. Assisting someone along the way by lending a helpful hand can be rewarding for you both. There is only so much you can accomplish on your own. Seeking advice, encouragement, or support may be key ingredients to satisfying your hearts desires. Self-absorbtion is not healthy for you or others in your circle. Living selflessly encourages a healthier lifestyle, physically, and mentally. Reflect on the last act of kindness you displayed to a friend, family member, or complete stranger. How did you feel? How did the person respond? Were you gratified by your act of compassion and love? I believe most acts of altruism are birthed from personal motives and intentions. Our human nature is one of self-preservation. Flip the coin and conduct yourself with a giving and tender heart.

Most people tend to believe they would help more if they had more money. Acts of kindness are not always financially driven. It can be as simple as holding the door open for someone, paying it forward by treating a stranger to coffee, or complimenting someone. Or, you can take it step further. Volunteering your time, rewarding others tangible or monetary gifts. Your gift of compassion is the other person’s reward. Serving others or being helpful should not be a matter of seeking personal validation. This may result in the wrong intentions behind the act. There is a difference between seeking validation and serving. Acts of kindness should be about providing a difference in a person’s life. Again, this is gratifying to the person who is giving but not in a self-serving way or seeking validation. When involved in assistance to others, we are able to flourish as well. Learning more about a friend, co-worker, or family member allows the person to recognize you possess a genuine interest. As humans, we require a sense of value. It also allows us to be present with those in your life. Take a moment each day to bring a ray of sunlight into others lives. There is no risk but only reward. ZIKA VIRUS UPDATE

S

ince I last wrote about the Zika Virus in February 2016, there have been laboratory confirmed cases of the virus in 48 states. As of August 24, 2016, Zika has not been confirmed in Alaska and Wyoming. Florida is the only state where local mosquitoes have transmitted the virus, otherwise the infections in the other 47 states were travel associated (infected while traveling outside the United States or through sexual contact with an infected traveler). As of August 26, 2016, the total number of California residents infected with Zika is 189. The infected cases have all been travel associated, not one has been locally acquired. As of August 4, 2016, there have been two cases of Zika related birth defects California. What is the Zika Virus? Zika virus is a type of virus similar yellow fever, West Nile, dengue and Japanese encephalitis viruses. People are infected by a mosquito bite, specifically from an Aedes species mosquito. The virus is mostly in South and Central America, but the Aedes species mosquito has now been found in parts of California. Mosquitoes that bite an infected person can spread it when it bites another victim. The virus has been found in urine and saliva of infected people, but there hasn’t been proof that it can spread when in contact with those fluids. Although rare, the virus can be sexually transmitted. What are the symptoms? Not everyone that gets bit by an infected mosquito will develop symptoms. It typically takes three to 12 days for symptoms to develop after a mosquito bite. About 20% of those infected may progress to symptoms such as fever, rash, joint pain or conjunctivitis (pink eye), muscle aches and headache. The symptoms may last a few days to a week. Most people don’t require any hospitalization and death is very rare. So if most people don’t get sick from it and it is rarely fatal, why are we so worried about it?

The World Health Organization declared the Zika virus a global health emergency because it is linked to serious birth defects, specifically microcephaly (babies born with small heads and partial brain development). It is suspected that babies born with microcephaly in Brazil came from mothers infected with the Zika virus. There is no treatment for microcephaly. Some children with microcephaly can develop normal intelligence, but for others with the birth defect, it may cause developmental disabilities, difficulties with balance, speech problems, seizures and possibly death. Several countries that have experienced Zika outbreaks recently have reported increases in people who have Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an uncommon sickness of the nervous system in which a person’s own immune system damages the nerve cells, causing muscle weakness, and sometimes, paralysis. Currently the Center for Disease Control suggests that GBS is strongly associated with Zika; however, only a small proportion of people with recent Zika virus infection get GBS. There has been a reported case of an infected Honduran individual who travelled to Venezuela and developed an acute sensory polyneuropathy during the active phase of his Zika infection. The polyneuropathy can present as numbness, tingling in the feet and hands, sharp, burning pain or extreme sensitivity to touch. How is Zika treated? Presently there is no vaccine or medicine for the virus. Treatment is directed toward the symptoms of the infection. An infected person should rest, drink plenty of fluids and take over the counter medicine like acetaminophen for pain and fever. Dr. Rebecca Diaz How is Zika diagnosed? The symptoms are very similar to other viral illnesses. Diagnosis of Zika is based on a person’s recent travel history, symptoms, and test results. A blood or urine test can confirm a Zika infection.

LIFE & CAREER COACH BY SUNNY SIMON

TIME TO LOWER THE BAR

W

hile flipping through one of my favorite foodie magazines I noticed this tip: “Lower the bar. Try a no-prep picnic dinner with hard-boiled eggs, hummus, pita, olives, snap peas and grapes.” That picnic menu is appealing, but what commanded my attention was the sentence suggesting we “lower the bar.” I find that phrase counterintuitive. After all, I named my life and career coaching business, “Raise the Bar High,” and now a chef somewhere on the planet suggests we keep it simple and stop trying so hard. After spending a few minutes massaging that concept into my brain, I recalled a recent dinner at a friend’s home. She served us a hearty but simple meal of chicken chili and cornbread. On the way home my husband raved about the dinner. When I asked him why he found it so appealing, he informed me he enjoyed the simplicity of a no fuss meal. I knew he mentally compared it to one of my “company’s coming menus” which were never uncomplicated. I sighed thinking Chef Anonymous was right about lowering the bar. The food tip converts to a life lesson. We don’t always have to go create the whole enchilada. In fact, recently a friend of mine famous for producing incredible cakes decided to buy one for a child’s birthday party. She reasoned

by keeping it simple, she could spend less time in the kitchen and more time with her guests. There are multiple applications where it is prudent to lower the bar. If your dreaming of that high performance uber-expensive Porsche Cayman GT4 but you know it will be the next century before you can save enough to purchase one, take it down a few notches. It is possible to fall in love with a less expensive, lower maintenance model. Some friends were putting off getting married until they could afford an exquisite destination wedding. I suggested they were missing the point about celebrating a marriage, acknowledging that often guests mail in a RSVP regrets because travel expenses prohibit their attendance. After having some candid conversations with friends and family, they found it to be true and happily tied the knot in a local venue. What about you? Are you overly concerned about perfection? Should you lower the bar and give yourself some breathing space? Think about altering your plans. As for me, I’m embracing easy is best. Forget the pan seared rib eye steak with Béarnaise. Tonight the menu is chicken chili and cornbread. Sunny Simon is the owner of Raise the Bar High Life and Career Coaching and the author of the blog, www.lifeonthesunnyside.net
