aturday, September 5th, five awesome bands and all of the cool kids will be gathering at Schmidy’s Tavern in Palm Desert to rock out in celebration of the CVMA’s 2015 “Best Female Vocalist” Chelsea Rowe, AKA, Chelsea Sugarbritches. Front-woman for Long Duk Dong, and member of 2015 “CVMA’s Best New Band,” Wayward Sirens, it may seem to some folks that the petite, purple-haired pixie is all over the place. Those folks don’t know the half of it. In addition to her commitments to multiple musical projects, Chelsea is a talented stylist and business woman who runs Alter-Ego Salon in Palm Desert with her partner and bestie, Carly Champagne, and is a mother to 18 and 15 year-old daughters and an 8 year-old son who she is raising along with her husband and support system, local promoter and character extraordinaire, Marcus Smith, AKA Johnny Sugarbritches. Chelsea: “Marcus put this entire show together by himself before I knew anything about it. That’s just the kind of guy he is. He would do anything for me. The fact is I would not be able to do any of this while balancing work and motherhood without him. He knows that this makes me happy and he makes every sacrifice necessary for the kids

and me to be able to do what I do.” The show that Mr. Sugarbritches put together features many of the Coachella Valley’s most popular bands and CVMA nominees and winners. Included in the lineup is Blasting Echo whose keyboardist, Linda Lemke Heinz is joining Chelsea on a new project called 5th Town. Chelsea: “Unfortunately, there were too many scheduling conflicts to continue on with Wayward Sirens any longer. We had invested a lot into the music we had made so far so Linda, myself and the guys in the band decided to try to keep the momentum going with 5th Town. The name is a rough translation of La Quinta and it’s actually the title of the first song I ever wrote that was about growing up in the La Quinta Cove. It was Linda’s idea to make it the new band name.” 5th Town will be making their debut at the 8th Annual Concert for Autism on Oct 17th at Schmidy’s Tavern. But, before any of these projects came about, Mrs. Sugarbritches was cutting her performer’s teeth with, “the best 80’s coverband this side of the dinosaurs,” Long Duk Dong. Co-fronted by Nicco Ysiano, “Donger” found themselves in need of a new female vocalist around 3 ½ years ago and mutual friends suggested Chelsea might be a great match. I asked Nicco what Chelsea has brought to the Donger table………. Ysiano: “In a couple of words, I’d say she brings unstoppable energy and attitude for days.” All of that energy, attitude and of course, talent has made Chelsea Sugarbritches a beloved character on the Coachella Valley

September 3 to September 9, 2015

By Esther Sanchez music scene and if you have yet to see her perform, I suggest you remedy that ASAP. Mrs. Sugarbritches never disappoints. The Lineup BLASTING ECHO Rock band, Blasting Echo is fronted by singer/songwriter and guitarist, Josh Heinz, drummer, Mondo Flores and the lovely Ms. Linda Lemke on keys & vocals. Together, they “encompass a wide spectrum of music from hard to punk rock and everything in between - while lyrically addressing personal, social and political issues with honesty, energy and intensity. Each member approaches music with enjoyment and passion. This is evident in their recordings, but never more so than in the rawness of their live performances.” Thr3 STRYKES (feat. The Dirty X’s) Hip-Hop meets rock group, Thr3 Strykes consists of CVMA “Best Rap/Hip-Hop Artists” 2014 & 2015, Joshua Fimbres and Josh Hall who together, “...set off an explosive hip hop fuse with a rock and roll ending.” Joining them on stage will be members of their newer side-project, The Dirty X’s which includes bass player, Eric Vaca and is described as garage/punk-rock and more. Their popularity growing, Fimbres and Hall have taken their musical projects beyond the Banning Pass and into Hollywood with recent gigs in venues such as The Viper Room and Whiskey A Go-Go. BRIDGER Bridger is, Jim Cathcart/Vocals & Guitar, Dan Dillinger/Vocals & Bass, Jacob Miller/ Backup Vocals & Lead Guitar, KT Cathcart/ Backup Vocals & Drums. The rock/punk/energy quartet hail from Bermuda Dunes and were CVMA recipients in 2014 for “Best New Band” and the 2015 recipients for the “Best Band” “Best Punk Band” “Best Drummer” and “Best Frontman” awards. Obvious favorites amongst many desert rockers, they don’t win awards just for being cute. Bridger kicks ass. But, don’t take my word for it. PERISHMENT If you are hankering for a face-melting, look no further than the boys from CVMA’s “Best Metal Band” 2015, Perishment. Consisting of Ruben Gutierrez on Vocals, Bobby D Taffolla on Guitar, Aaron Ramson on Bass, and Tommy Winters on Drums. Perishment has been blessing us with what I personally consider one of the desert’s best examples of true, heavy-metal since 2005. If you have not yet experienced Perishment and you love to thrash it up, you need to be at this show. THE SWEAT ACT These guys are the first artists that I had the privilege of covering for CV Weekly so I am clearly showing some bias here, but that being said, I love this band. Featuring lead vocalist & guitarist, Chris Long, drummer, Troy Whitford and bassist Dan Dillinger (also a member of Bridger), The Sweat Act is a high-energy trio that bring together catchy riffs, top-notch vocals and musicianship, with contagious beats that could bring about a serious dilemma, “Do I want to bang my head or dance?” How about both?

The Community Supports Musicians Outlet after the Fire That Destroyed Their Store

T

his past Saturday CV Weekly and Schmidy’s Tavern brought the community together to raise over $5,000.00 for Musicians Outlet at the “Brick by Brick” benefit. The outpouring of love, respect and support for owners Randy & Cindy Hewitson was amazing. There were many people who made this happen as it takes a village. A special thank you to FG Creative (Stephanie Greene and Chris Clemens) for sending out the press release that got us on all 3 major TV stations: CBS Local 2, KESQ and KMIR 6. And thank you to our own Lisa Lynn Morgan for dialing in all the radio promotions on 100.5 with Mike Mozingo and Trevor Stone. Also thank you to Todd Marker. Not only was Schmidy’s Tavern the hosting venue but owners Dennis & Kathy Ford also paid to print the bricks and also donated 10% of the bar’s sales that day. Other sponsors included: Tg Tattoo, Hard Rock Hotel PS, Miramonte Resort,

Record Alley, Skitzo Kitty, Babes BBQ & Brewhouse, Jackalope Ranch, Stuft Pizza, TKB Bakery, Royal Treatments Massage, Debut European Hair Salon, New Age Glamour, DOS Salon and BloDry Bar. A huge thank you to all the acoustic acts and bands that performed: William Randal & Joe Hamer, Lisa Lynn Morgan, Andy Cahan, Cat & Larry Pederson, Alex Santana & Esther Sanchez, Blue Ribbon Rooster, Giselle Woo, Chris Miller, John Stanley King, David Macias, Derek Jordan Gregg, Hollace, Rick Shelley, Ideation, Blasting Echo, Waxy, Long Duk Dong, 7 Mile High, Braun Graulein, Whiskey & Knives, Aphrodisiac Jacket, The Hellions and Wicked Jed. Thank you to CV Weekly’s Art Director, Robert Chance, for designing the bricks, last week’s cover and working the door along with the Fords, Noe Gutierrez, Johnny Sugarbritches, Esther Sanchez and Phil Lacombe who was also our host for the event. The sound was right on point all day and

night thanks to AJ Acosta and Greg Little. And of course our amazing photographers who worked hard: Chris Miller for the photo from last week’s cover, Esther Sanchez and Scott Pam who worked from noon until closing. And of course the biggest thank you to this community who came out and gave their money and support! You can still donate by purchasing a brick at Musicians Outlet or Schmidy’s Tavern. There is also a GoFundMe account setup at gofundme. com/e7n5pmc5. Donations can also be made to support Musicians Outlet’s recovery at California Bank & Trust at 73-301 Hwy 111 in Palm Desert noting “Musician’s Outlet Fire Fund - Account #5790626674.” Musicians Outlet is now open for business at their new location 5 doors down from the store that caught on fire. 2015 Rae of Hope Leadership Retreat: Hope and Help for Our Desert’s Middle School Girls

“To be irreplaceable, you have to be different. I don’t want them to just be told, I want them to be shown.” -Bianca Rae ward winning news reporter, Bianca Rae, didn’t take it lightly when she noticed the trend of young girls crowding around her while on location covering news stories for KESQ. She felt a deep sense of responsibility. “I am very proud and grateful that I started getting involved on the path toward my passion when I was young. I am blessed! I had good, strong guidance at a young age. If you start young, you have more time to accomplish everything you set out to do. I want to be part of helping young girls get on the right path when they are young, at this molding stage of their lives.” More than words, this young woman of action has founded her own non-profit organization and is inviting Coachella Valley middle school girls from all over, to a free all day event in hopes of giving them some of the same guidance, support and wisdom that has helped her on the road to a successful career and life. This second annual event follows last year’s tremendous inaugural success, where 150 girls spent quality time with some of our desert’s high profile, well respected women. Bianca Rae, along with her colleagues Jenifer Daniels, Laura Yanez,

Natalie Brunell, Samantha Cortese, Gabriela Quezada, Mayra Higareda and Francini Zabata volunteered their time and their wisdom in order to make a positive and lasting impact on our community’s young women. “It was a terrific day of health, wellness, beauty and leadership,” shared Rae. “What made this so unique is that it was led by the women these girls see on television. 150 girls from across the valley participated in four different break out groups. International School of Beauty led a ‘makeunder’ makeup tutorial, showing how less is more. There was a fabulous group about health and wellness, and treating your body well. My group discussed getting active and involved in your community and making a difference. I shared with the girls about my involvement in student council and how it enhanced my life. We also had 6 different non-profits looking for volunteers, so we were truly showing these girls practical ways to get involved. We also talked about anti bullying. The girls really opened up to us about social media and Instagram and how it affects them. There was a lot of discussion about making good choices; about not bullying, not assisting in bullying or going on social media to participate in bullying. The fourth group was ‘Building a Dream’ where they made a photo collage of what they want to be and how they were going to get there.” “Fortunately or unfortunately, people in the public eye really can influence young kids,” Rae explained passionately. “These girls actually thought we were cool. At one point, the girls were asking us for our autographs. We could have told them that the sky was green and they would have believed us. And that right there is the point; they looked up to us and we could have either run it the wrong way or run it the right way. This is the whole purpose of this retreat - to try and harness that influence, and use it for good.” Last year, the free event had to put some girls on a waiting list when it filled up with 150 participants. “We were at the Miramonte, and it was wonderful,” shared Rae. “This year we are very excited to be at the Renaissance Hotel in Indian Wells. We’ll

have room for twice as many girls. We have 140 girls signed up already and we have room for 300. We are a month away, and want all the spots full if possible. We really want to meet these girls.” This year’s mentors joining Bianca Rae include local news celebrities Karen Devine, Laura Yanez, Alexandra Pierce, Gabriela Quezada, Mayra Higareda, and Sarah Jayne Simon. The event will cost $10, but the Burger Foundation is sponsoring a scholarship program. Anybody can apply. Applicants are asked to write and submit one paragraph about why they want to attend the retreat. Those applications can be submitted to biancaraefoundation.org. “I’m really grateful to my station for running the commercials for this and getting the word out,” shared Rae. “And it wouldn’t be what it is without all the fantastic celebrity ladies who volunteer their time with these girls.” “I’ve cut a lot of mistakes out of my life due to what I’ve learned at retreats like this one. I learned about respecting myself, being respected by my peers and elders, and how these things would get me much further in life. I want these girls to know that the younger you start, the better you’ll do. I’m still fairly young, but I’ve always had a clear focus. It’s about setting yourself apart from the crowd. To be irreplaceable, you have to be different. And I don’t want them to just be told, I want them to be shown.”

his past Sunday night was the Final round of Fortune Finder Music Group’s “Summer Showdown: Battle of the Bands” at The Hood Bar & Pizza. I was honored to be one of the judges again this year alongside Brian Blueskye (from CV Independent) and alternate judges Lance Riebsomer and Christina Reyes of Caxton. Going into the finals we knew it was going to be tough competition as all 3 bands are amazing performers in each of their genres. The winner was Hollace: Alex Antonio (vocals), Frank Michel (lead guitar), James Hollis Eaton (rhythm guitar) Shawn “Stretch” Fisher (bass) and Josh Ballard (drums). From the moment they took the stage they held the audience in the palm of their hand. Frontman Alex Antonio’s vocals were spot on with dynamic range as he worked the stage with moves similar to Axel Rose, but never an imitation. The band as a whole, were tight and never missed a beat even though drummer Josh Ballard had just gotten out of the hospital with pneumonia. Hollace is a high energy, melodic rock band with radio-ready songs and catchy hooks that will stay in your head long after you hear them. More on this band as a full feature article in next week’s issue. Second place went to Thr3Strykes with members Josh Hall and Josh Fimbres, who also brought along members of their side project The Dirty X’s (Jake Fimbres and Eric Vaca) for part of their set. These guys are in your face performers and put on a show you will never

6

forget. Thr3Strykes have been known to raise the roof, literally, during their performances. You never know what might happen and that’s just part of what makes them so entertaining to watch, not to mention they can spit rap lyrics with the best of them. Thr3Strykes have won the CV Music Award in 2014 & 2015 for “Best Rap/Hip-Hop Artists”.

Third place went to the Yucca Valley band Blackwater: This power trio is hard, full throttle rock and gave a flawless performance. Singer, guitarist Jimmy Fine, showed off some serious shredding skills to go with his vocal prowess and drummer Jeremy Hewson pounded the skins to perfection, but it was bass player Jerry Bryson that stole the show. Bryson is an absolute beast on the bass working the stage and commanding your attention. Just because the other two bands placed second and third doesn’t mean they weren’t worthy of the win. This was difficult to judge as all 3 bands are quite different and all excellent musicians. But Hollace came out and slayed it from start to finish and walked off with the $1000.00 prize. Congratulations to all 3 bands. You are all winners!! You can check out Hollace and Blackwater performing this Friday at Schmidy’s Tavern along with The Classy Mother Fu?kers and Johnny Elsewhere. This is a free show and starts at 8:30. Thr3Strykes will be performing at Schmidy’s on Saturday for Chelsea Sugarbritches Birthday along with Perishment, Sweat Act, Blasting Echo and Bridger. This is a free show and starts at 8:00pm.

e live on a virtual planet, where the tangible is an endangered, exotic species, especially in the music world. Behind the glass of our computer screens and smart devices, lies a huge melodic universe with millions of artists and songs, untouchable, unreal, floating behind a cyber-wall. That being said, be warned: Lorialla does not live there. Touch the icon to play this inaugural launch, and Lorialla will punch through the glass; pull you in, and with a tenacious sonic grip, make you listen in pictures. Paul Cotterell and Tom Collins (formerly of local Coachella Valley based band, Pictures from Eden) and new partner in crime, Esjay Jones, have put something together that has promise to propel them into a league all of their own with this stellar landmark project. The collaboration of industry top dogs finessing the poignant delivery of this project is the equivalent of a music industry SEAL team: Produced by Trey Vittetoe (Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus) and Josh “Igloo” Monroy (Ludacris, Outkast) and Skylar Mones (Adam Lambert, Flo Rida). Engineered by Bjorn Thorsrud (Smashing Pumpkins) Mixed by Grammy Award Winning Ariel Chobaz (Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Velvet Revolver, Joss Stone, Nicki Minaj and more) AND Grammy Award Winning Mixer & Producer, Josh Mosser (Imagine Dragons and others) It’s hard to imagine Lorialla having any other option but success. This album balances the best of what technology brings to the music production table, with the ever elusive human element of genuine talent. At the front and core of this project, march a passionate songwriting trio, completely abandoned to their craft as reflects in their articulate and relatable concert of music experiences. Paul Cotterell’s voice (nominated Best Male Vocalist, CV Music Awards 2014) launches these songs with always powerful; always warm vocals that never divert from authenticity. Guitarist Tom Collins, who can hold his own against the best of the best in any 6 string meltyour-face off, intuitively plays to the heart of each song. Esjay Jones, a Pop Culture Whisperer and visionary, seems to have her finger directly on the pulse of what moves people and the music industry, and has demonstrated that remarkably.

“As musicians we spend most of our lives seeking musical relationships that not only fuel and excite us, but push us to extreme levels,” shared Lorialla’s front man, Paul Cotterell. “Lorialla is a product of a group of passionate, driven music makers striving to create something that exceeds our expectations. The team that Esjay has created is a collection of some of the most brilliant professionals in the biz coming together as a family to create something that pushes us to be our absolute best. here are some of us, who even though we are not musicians, are doing our best to support Jazz and particularly smooth jazz here in the desert. I am honored to have a great friend and promoter Ruth Ruiz, who is one of the “Ladies of Jazz”. Ever since she’s been a little girl, while others were listening to the Beatles, Ruth was dancing and singing along to her jazz favorites Nancy Wilson, Jazz Crusaders and Dinah Washington. Although singing and dancing were her two first loves her life took a different turn when she went into law enforcement. She started as a secretary but became a deputy sheriff. She entered the Los Angeles Bureau of Investigations and the DA’s office as an investigator and rose to head up a large investigators office. As Ruth puts it “everything you saw on Law and Order, I did”. She investigated murders, rapes and other crimes. She was on the “Lieutenant’s list” when she started to have heart problems. Her doctor advised her to retire and that lead to her new career. I first met Ruth at a party I attended at her home. It was an informal after hours party with lots of musicians who just jammed. Ruth loves the music and realized that there was a lack of booking agents to help musicians get gigs. As she puts it “they just want to play, they don’t want to have to worry about the business part”. This is how RR Class Act Entertainment began in 2010 as something fun she could do. Her business has been growing by

leaps and bounds and today Ruth is the #1 Jazz booking agent in the desert. National recording artist Slim Man and his band is his her top act, she books Joe Baldino, Smooth Brothers, Angie Whitney, Rose Mallet, Michael D’ Angelo (50’s 60’s music), Paul Elia (Dean Martin and standards. She’s picked up numerous venues in town to place her artists. This brings us to her latest venture, smooth Jazz parties. Ruth is throwing a party on Sept 24 at the beautiful Miramonte Resort in Indian Wells. She’s calling it ‘Elements of Smooth Jazz and Soul’ and will be featuring Darryl Fitzgerald Walker and his band, with special guest smooth Jazz Guitarist Blake Aaron. For those that have never seen Darryl, he is the soulful lead singer and sax player from Greg Adams and East Bay Soul. Blake Aaron has had a number of smooth Jazz hits. Atlanta Daily World calls his new CD Soul Stories “a perfect blend of Jazz, Latin, R&B and Funk.” His new single “Wes Side Story,” was recently #1 on the Groove Jazz Charts, #2 on Amazon Sales and #9 on Billboard. The party starts at 6pm and goes until 9:30 with an artist “Meet and Greet” after the show. There will be a raffle to raise money for “Rosie’s Kids” a non-profit organization “Helping Kids Succeed”. Xtreme Dean the Magician, is going to Emcee the event. There will be food and drinks available for sale. This totally danceable music will be perfect because the party will have a large dance floor. Ruth’s past promotional ventures include promoting “Red Hot Ballroom”. Ruth is quite the ballroom dancer. She’s also held a “Battle of the Bands” and is also working on two wine tasting events this season for charities. I asked Ruth what her goals were and she said “Have Fun, Enjoy life, and Keep Jazz Alive here in our beautiful desert.” If you love Jazz you will love this party that Ruth is putting on. Tickets are only $25 and can be purchased through www.purplepass. com If you’d like to have Ruth (RR Class Act Entertainment) book your venue contact her at 760-777-2328. TOMMY KEENE

“Laugh In The Dark” (Second Motion Records)

he perfect Pop song has a few key ingredients; obviously it must be catchy, it must be memorable and it must feel effortless. Classic examples of this unwritten paradigm include the Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There,” The Who’s “I Can’t Explain,” The Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” Todd Rundgren’s “I Saw The Light” and the Raspberries’ “Go All The Way.” More recently, Outkast’s “Hey Ya,” L’Avventura’s “Pretend You Don’t See Me,” The Empty Hearts’ “Perfect World” and Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” have carried that tradition into the 21st century. Tommy Keene is someone who could teach a master class in Pure Pop songcraft. Tommy Keene grew up in Bethesda, Maryland and began playing piano as a child. By his teenage years, he was pounding the drums for a trio called Blue Steel. In college he formed a two-piece, The Rage, with Richard X. Heyman. He then moved on to a well-known Washington, D.C. band, the Razz. They were popular enough to open for seminal Punk acts like Devo, the Ramones and Patti Smith. When the Razz collapsed, Keene became a touring sideman for a couple of different groups. By 1982 he had formed the Tommy Keene Band in New York. That same year, he self-released his debut, Strange Alliance. Two years later, he recorded two EPs, Places That Are Gone and Back Again (Try…) for the North Carolina indie label, Dolphin. The first EP received a glowing, four star review in Rolling Stone. It was also voted “Best EP” in the prestigious Village Voice critics’ poll. Keene’s sound was the perfect intersection of New Wave verve and Power Pop crunch. Major record labels took notice and Keene signed a deal with Geffen. Songs From The Film arrived in 1986, it was great, but felt a little watered-down. Geffen nixed the original mixes from producers T-Bone

Burnett and Don Dixon, and hedged their bets, replacing them with Beatles engineer, Geoff Emerick. Still, it spent 12 weeks in the Billboard Top 200, and served as a great introduction to Keene’s melodic charms. He followed up on Geffen with the excellent Based On Happy Times. Despite contributions from Jules Shear and Peter Buck from R.E.M. the label didn’t give the record the big promotional push it deserved. Six years would elapse before he recorded another full-length album. Keene hooked up with bassist Brad Quinn and drummer John Richardson, for the “...Happy Times” tour; a collaboration that continues to this day). He also relocated to Los Angeles. By the early ‘90s, he was ping-ponging between wellrespected indie labels, Matador and Alias. The wonderful five-song EP, Sleeping On A Rollercoaster arrived in 1992. He followed with Driving Into The Sun, in 1995, Ten Years After in 1996 and Isolation Party in 1998. He also found time to act as a touring guitarist with the Velvet Crush, Goo Goo Dolls and ex-Replacements front-man Paul Westerberg. The new millennium saw the release of a live album, Showtunes, as well as a 2002 collaboration with Jay Bennett and Jeff Tweedy from Wilco and ex-Gin Blossom Robin Wilson, entitled The Merry-GoRound Broke Down. He returned to the road opening for Guided By Voices. Crashing The Ether was released in 2006 and then he formed an alliance with GBV visionary, Robert Pollard. As the Keene Brothers they recorded Blues and Boogie Shoes. In 2009 he signed with respected North Carolina indie, Second Motion Records, they released his ninth full-length, In The Late Bright. Two years later he recorded Behind The Parade.

As a way of clearing the musical cobwebs, Keene put his stamp on favorite classic songs by artists like Big Star, the Who, Rolling Stones, Donovan, Roxy Music and Television. The album, Excitement At Your Feet (slyly referencing the Who’s “See Me, Feel Me” without covering it), paved the way for his 12th album, Laugh In The Dark. The record opens with the one-two punch of “Out Of My Mind” and “Dear Heloise.” On “Out...” a pile-driving rhythm collides with rippling guitar riffs. Our hero is at a romantic crossroads, waxing equivocal over a stalled relationship. “I could never leave this all behind...” becomes “I could always always leave you far behind, and go out of my mind” “Dear Heloise” is powered by jangly guitars and rattle-snake shake percussion. Equal parts playful and plaintive, Keene is seeking the authenticity from the doyenne of helpful hints. “Settling down in Baltimore, you found fame and so much more/Tell us the truth now, Heloise.” “I Belong To You” is anchored by jittery bass lines and an urgent beat. Sinewy guitar figures flutter and wow over this slightly morbid love letter. The brief guitar and keys coda that closes the tune will leave Power Pop fans moist with delight. The guitars on “Last Of The Twilight Girls pivot between crunchy and sugarsweet. The muscular arrangement, featuring a pummeling back beat, rumbling bass fills and spiraling guitar solo, nearly camouflages the lyrics’ stinging rebuke of an old flame. “Remember the one who had you thinking he was inside you, he gave you the air to breathe/And you were the one who cried alone and sobbed and let him to leave.” The best tracks here are “Laugh In The Dark,” “I Want It To Be Over Now” and “Go Back Home.” A stutter-step rhythm sputters to life on the title track. Ringing guitar licks repeat the same circuitous cluster of notes. Keene’s mood seems dour but determined to experience true love. He’s getting laid; “get your ashes hauled forever...” still real love remains elusive. The last quarter of the song is given over to a piquant display of guitar pyrotechnics, courtesy the Tommy Keene guitar army. He layers riffs that cascade, spark, and pinwheel, the final notes a honeyed rush of acoustic arpeggios. The breezy vibe of “I Want It To Be Over Now” belies the lyrics’ bitter kiss-off. Accented by a hopscotch beat, walking bass lines and shimmery, tilt-a-whirl guitars, Keene is brusque and dismissive “Thanks for the ride, the same old same old/You couldn’t rate somehow, I want it to be over.” Yikes. The sunshiny guitar solo somehow ameliorates his curt dismissal. Finally, “Go Back Home” sounds like a

Music’s New Khan

S

long lost track from Led Zeppelin’s epochal “III” album. Fueled by filigreed acoustic fretwork that connects with sustained slide guitar notes, the laid-back percussion locks into a relax-fit Bo Diddley beat. Although Keene confesses “I’ve got the blues, as if I’m bleeding” he resolves to make a change; “I can’t go back to pins and needles, I’m off the track to where I really want to be/Get off the couch and say you mean it, no one can vouch for what never seems to be.” Other interesting tracks include the countrified stride of “All The Lights Are Alive,” wherein crystalline guitar chords coalesce into a chiming Byrdsy guitar break. Meanwhile, If the Who and Big Star ever collaborated, it might sound like “Alone In Modern Times.” This song confirms Tommy Keene’s Guitar Hero cred. Slashing power chords give way to jangly acoustic riffs and crisp, candy-coated licks, as he yearns for affection and human connection. He wistfully acknowledges “I’m just holding on for my life.” The album closes with the suitably majestic “All Gone Away.” It opens awash in psychedelic organ colors, sonic textures are slowly added until the drums ricochet through the mix. The lyrics are peppered with non-sequiturs like “Isn’t there a gun for honey, anyone from Delaware?” But the guitars weave an aural tapestry that creates a dream-like, hallucinatory sensation. The listener might even feel compelled to picture tangerine trees, marmalade skies and a girl with kaleidoscope eyes. It’s a potent finish to a nearly perfect record. Long time comrades John Richardson and Brad Quinn handle drum and bass duties. Tommy Keene plays everythingelse himself. The album was recorded his home studio in just under two months. The drums were added in two days at Ardent studios (Big Star’s original headquarters), in two days. In a perfect world, election cycles would last eight weeks and each Tommy Keene record would rocket to the top of the charts. Sadly, we don’t live in a perfect world. However, we can survive the next 14 months of hyperbole secure in the knowledge that Laugh In The Dark is an instant classic.

ometimes our destiny seems predetermined. Other times we create our own destiny. Other times it seems to be a mix of both. Khan (a.k.a. Donald Brown) was born to perform. His parents are both in the arts. His mother, Aneka Brown, is an interior design associate and owner of the former Aneka Brown Gallery in Palm Springs. Even with the pedigree, Khan struck out on his own path. As a child Donald played the flute. While few rap artists are known for their classical training, it provide the background for his love of the arts. Donald acted in musical theater. Even in the iconic role of the Tin Man in the musical production of The Whiz, Donald added his own twist. This Tin Man was popping and locking with a street vibe that was far removed from the Tin Man of Nipsy Russell. A graduate of Palm Springs High School (2013), Donald’s gift for word play made him popular in the local rap/hip hop community. Honing his skills Donald went on to create his own rap lyrics. Not content to be a performer, Donald is studying Sound Engineering. Armed with these skills, he arranges and produces his own music. His recording label, African Violets, has begun to produce other artists as well. Donald’s self-produced projects show his versatility. His latest release 95Till Infinity is a combination of 90’s old school rap, R&B and hip hop. The lyrics, however, are contemporary commentaries that are bringing Donald/ Khan to the attention of the rap community. “My influences are as diverse as me. I have a connection to the old school through the eclectic types of music I grew up listening to at home. Music was all around – from the sounds of Nina Simone to Fela Kuti to Roy Ayers and everything in between. But the past is the past, I am the now. I want to show that Khan is the real thing,” said Donald. “I am very aware of the world around me - from Ferguson to desert Hot Springs. I want to be a voice.” Donald is very involved in his community. “Giving back is an important part of my upbringing. Charity is more than words. It is action. I walk in the yearly MS Walka-thon to honor my aunt who lives with this disease. I produced a maxi single and donated 100% of the proceeds to Team

Carolyn MS Walk 2015. We are a community when we share regardless of race, religion or physical condition.” But it is music where Donald is making his impact felt. Why music? “Music is powerful,” continued Donald. “It can move people. It can cause a reaction. It can say a lot in minutes. I have something to say. People always want to compare an artist, especially a new artist like myself, to someone else. Comparisons may be flattering but I am Khan. I am ready to stand on my own and be judged by the music I create. This beginning is just that – a beginning. I have much to offer and have only just begun the journey.” To learn more Donald Brown/Khan visit facebook.com/KHANTHEKID.

Baby, From Blindness to Hope

T

he animals and their owners patiently stood in line awaiting their appointments at the low cost spay and neuter clinic in Indio. Suddenly the pace was broken by a frantic woman who suddenly appeared carrying a small pug dog, seeking medical care of a different nature. The bystanders were horrified to see that the dog’s eyes were hideously injured and practically hanging out of her head. The dog’s deliverer said someone she knew saw the dog get hit by a car and that person gave her the animal. Neither of them had any money for veterinary care. Lindi Biggi, president of Loving All Animals, was volunteering at the clinic that December morning, and she quickly arranged for emergency surgery at Country Club Animal Clinic. Dr. Lillian Roberts performed her surgery and she believes the dog was in this condition for at least several days and possibly as long as a week. Dr. Roberts reports, “One of her eyes had ruptured and the other was dangling loose. Her injuries were caused by some sort of blunt force trauma. Without treatment she probably would have died from the infection in her eye spreading to her brain.” By the time she arrived at the clinic, the dog had no sight left,

and with no way for her to regain her vision the only treatment option was enucleation, the complete removal of the eyes. What is her prognosis? Dr. Roberts observed that Baby’s sunny disposition still shone brightly even as she recovered from her trauma and operation. Dr. Roberts explains, “Blind dogs can function quite well, and I understand Baby has already quickly adapted to her new circumstances and should live a normal and happy life. There is no reason to think of her as disabled, one just needs to carefully introduce her to new surroundings. She’s only about one year old, and may not remember all the trauma that happened to her.” Baby became a part of Loving All Animals’ rescue and adoption program. It is a joy to watch her navigate her way around and happily interact with humans and other dogs. You easily forget her blindness as Baby enjoys the warmth of companionship and explores the world. Dogs speak through their bodies and Baby moves through the world with confidence and optimism. Lindi describes the moment she saw the dog she named Baby, “I could only imagine the pain she must have been in. Today she is incredibly

grateful and loving. My hope is that Baby will become certified as a therapy dog and join our 3-legged dog, Cassidy, doing goodwill in the community, going to schools, hospitals, and nursing homes, bringing happiness to people while also educating them about disabilities.” Blind dogs have the ability to distinguish between millions of different smells, allowing them to literally “see” the world through smell. Baby quickly learned to map out her surroundings in her mind and navigates quite well independently. Dogs easily pick up on our feelings, so it’s important that others speak to Baby in a cheery voice, and not convey whatever sympathy they might feel for her. Lots of verbal communication is good for a blind dog, and the sound of soft music playing when she is alone is comforting. Blind dogs like

Baby can even continue to play games such as fetch with a squeaky toy, as long as any sharp corners on tables are padded with bubble wrap or other fabric. Scent markers strategically placed in the home help them find important locations and avoid obstacles. Dogs tend to live in the moment, and dogs like Baby remind us humans how a positive attitude can overcome one’s circumstances. Lindi describes this fabulous little dog, “Although she is totally blind, Baby spends no time feeling sorry for herself. She is enjoying life by keeping in perfect focus all the wonderful things and people that surround her.” Part of a lovely poem about blind dogs tells us more about these “differently-abled” animals: “You took me in, you gave me love and we will never part!” “Because I’m blind with just my eyes, I see you with my heart!” It was no surprise when precious Baby became officially Baby Biggi when Lindi decided to adopt her; another happy ending for a pup that deserved a second chance. Busting Out the Beer & Brats

A

s is traditionally done in this wine column, we salute a fun summer of suds by clearing off the wine bar, grabbing a bucket of ice and plunking down a few bottles of lagers, ales, and IPAs. If we still have the energy, we scrounge around the freezer for beer mugs, check the pantry for pretzels and be on the look-out for some beer nuts & chips. A true thing can be said about us wine lovers: there’s a full appreciation of a lot of other good things. Often there’s nothing more appealing than enjoying an ice cold beer on a hot summer’s day—let alone on our big-BIG Labor Day weekend. And while there is a panoply of foodie grilling treats and meats to savor, one of the easiest and tastiest things to throw on the grill are the “brats”—those bold and juicy Bratwurst sausages with their own unique flavor that can crave a craft beer all day long. In a recent family get-away, we were invited to the Stone Brewery Company in Escondido to check out the amenities and taste some new brews on tap. Having visited Master Brewer Chris Anderson and the beer-making facilities over at our local CV Brewery a few times already, I didn’t feel the need to take the tour— especially in August, where it’s pretty hot, but I must say--that place is HUGE. It’s easily five to six times larger than the CVB! It puts out close to 300,000 barrels of brew a year! And here’s some beer-buzz: Stone Brewery is expanding its operations to the East Coast, and, to Bratwurst’s home country in Berlin Germany! At Haggen Market in Rancho Mirage, where I’m the wine steward, we also have a “local Craft Beer” cold section which include many bottles of brews from CV, La Quinta Brewing, and Stone among many others. (In San Diego alone, there are close to 100 breweries!) Back to the Stone Brewery—which is kind of a beer-Disneyland for suds-lovers. Airy and beautifully designed, take the tour, drink a beer at the bar, taste & drink a flight of beers at the bar, enjoy tastes at the Tap Room, enjoy the Bistro for lunch or dinner, take a stroll through the gardens, and find every T-shirt and accoutrement to keep one hoppy and happy. One can check out the entire scene at www. stonebrewery.com We took the opportunity to chat with the lovely Whitney, who was working Tap Room— she’s been with the company for over seven years, and still enjoys the days with what she calls her “stone brewery family—it’s just like that!” Certainly, most of us have had or at least heard of Stone’s famed Arrogant Bastard Ale. However, it seemed that everyone’s favorite ale was the Stone 19th Anniversary Thunderstruck IPA. As she poured the gold colored brew with a white head of foam, Whitney went on to talk about it, mirroring the tasting notes on-line: “Our 19th anniversary beer brings the boom, delivering it to the palate in a

voluminous, hop-driven thunderclap backed by the power of our brewing passion and intensity. This double IPA owes its considerable oomph to a quartet of Australian hops. “The aroma is amazing; massively hoppy with exotic tropical fruit, peaches, citrus and pineapple characteristics, balanced with a bit of peppery-herbal dankness. “Lots of fruity hop notes, ripe fruit, pleasantly malty and lasting intense bitterness. It’s medium bodied, bitter and dry. “Over the last several years, we have developed an intense and thorough hopevaluation program where we identify experimental, new or old-favorite hop varieties to evaluate, and these test beers are late-hopped and dry-hopped exclusively using the variety we are exploring. We have developed a real affinity for hops grown in Australia. In the case of Stone 19th Anniversary Thunderstruck IPA, we dry-hopped the beer with two Australian hop varietals that went through our evaluation program. Nick-named Vic Secret and Ella, both are flavorful varieties with complex fruit profiles. “To make this beer even more authentically Australian, we also imported close to 400,000

pounds of an Australian malt called Fairview, all in 1,800-pound Super Sacks for use as the base malt. The result is a uniquely Australian beer, Stone-style. Thun-da!” Much thanks Whitney! A really quick spiel on IPAs—India Pale Ale. The story is that when British brewers were making beer for export to India, it took a higher alcohol content to preserve the ale being shipped through the hot tropic zones; and, to keep a balance, full hop flavor with its intense bitterness was needed to match that alcohol. Interestingly, the more experienced wine drinkers tend to really enjoy the hops and bitter quality of an American IPA with its citrus, pine, grass, or floral overtones. And typical beer grub like Buffalo chicken wings, Mexican

food, burgers loaded with toppings, smoked oily fish, nachos, and of course spicy sausages like “brats” get an additional bump-up in the food & beer appreciation with an IPA. Everyone says to grill up the “brats” low and slow—there’s always a concern that if the casing splits, a lot of the juices can escape. But that occurs if the brats are over-cooked!— no one wants that! But I like to grill them up hot and quick! Simply stay attentive—giving them char and turning them, they’ll be done in six minutes. And I love all brands of “brats”, but Johnsonville Original Bratwurst is so inexpensive and so delicious—why not relish them! Bon Appétit & Cheers!

Book Review Oliver Sacks, 1933-2015

t is a rare gift when a writer has the ability and talent to open the eyes and mind of a reader to new ideas, colorful worlds and human idiosyncrasies. It is even more exotic and fascinating when the author is a neuro-scientist and medical doctor. Oliver Sacks not only had a passion for people, but for language and narrative. Last Sunday, August 30, Sacks died of cancer at the age of 82 in his New York home. When Sacks was 14 years old, he began to journal. Born and raised in England, Sacks’ parents were both physicians; his mother a surgeon and father a general practitioner who worked from home. Sacks was the youngest of four boys. His two eldest brothers became medical doctors as well. The other, just as brilliant, became schizophrenic. Perhaps influencing Sacks’ interest in the mind. In the 1960s, Sacks came to the United States to further study and practice medicine. In England, homosexuality was illegal, so when he came to California, he found friends and a lifestyle he could not have had back home. Sacks always wanted to become an American citizen, but never did. Keenly observant, insatiably curious and a brilliant scientist, it became natural for Sacks to express his work and thoughts on paper. He loved the act of writing. As a doctor, his case histories and clinical insights stood out. Publishing research results was a breeze -- and fun. The writing helped advanced his career. Often, for competing physicians, his highly readable pathographies were a threat. His first book on migraines was a result of working at a New

York clinic. He wrote Migraine while on vacation in England visiting his folks. “It spilled out suddenly, without conscious planning,” he says in his biography On The Move (for my review go online CVW Book Review.) When Sacks handed his manuscript to the physician in charge of the migraine clinic, he was furious and threatened to destroy Sacks’ career. One doctor said that Sacks’ “book was too easy to read and would make people suspicious.” Shortly after, the jealous physician plagiarized the entire book declaring he wrote it! He never believed Sacks would have the gall to publish it after his scolding. The migraine admonishment hurt Sacks and for a while he feared for his career as a neurologist and writer -- until Awakenings. Working in a Bronx

playbook, it’s time to break down the latest in the NFL. (Cue bad British accent) Welcome to this edition of… Jules From The Gridiron… (cue dramatic music) A few months ago, around the time the NFL season concluded and teams were “mutually parting ways” with their head coaches, I wrote a column in this space outlining “How To Ruin A Franchise In 5 Easy Steps”. I was pointing to John Elway and the Denver Broncos and their short-term perspective creating unnecessary tumult and change. And I should have included a few other owners and GMs in that same column who have surpassed Elway and the Bronco’s irrational quest for a “SUPER BOWL OR BUST” mentality and ruined their franchises. I thought Jed York was a runaway favorite for “Worst Owner Of The Off Season.” First he firedsorry, “mutually parted ways” with Jim Harbaugh. Then he offered a rambling press conference that offered no sense or logic. Then we watched in bewilderment as heart-beat guys like Patrick Willis and Chris Borland and Justin Smith and Anthony Davis retired. Then we watched in disgust as player after player landed in trouble with the law. That’s not enough. We then got to see his problem solving ability, or lackthereof, when his new fancy billiondollar stadium, the one set to house Super Bowl 50, can’t get it’s grass in gear. Probably doesn’t know his grass from a hole in the wall. Anyway, I thought, Yorky had that “Worst Owner” thing handled. But then Dan Snyder stepped in and pushed his franchise straight off a cliff. You have to hand it to him, if ANYONE can outgrasshole York, it’s Snyder.

encephalitis ward, Sacks discovered a treatment to bring the patients back to cognitive life. The book became a best seller and a movie staring Robin Williams. Books that followed: A Leg to Stand On; The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat; Seeing Voices: A Journey Into the World of the Deaf; An Anthropologist on Mars; The Island of the Colorblind; Uncle Tungsten: Memories of a Chemical Boyhood; Oaxaca Journal; Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain; The Mind’s Eye; Hallucinations; and his memoir, released this year, On the Move: A Life. Oaxaca is mostly a travel adventure, although it contains scientific observations. My favorite books by Sacks are: The Island of the Colorblind and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. In Colorblind, Sacks goes to the Pacific islands Pingelap and Guam where each culture has a genetic defect mainly derived from their isolation and small gene pool. With incredible intelligence and compassion, Sacks describes the life of islanders who live without color on one island and a strange paralysis on the other. His descriptions are poetic and beautiful. The reader understands what it’s like to be colorblind or unable to move. Sacks not only helps the islanders as a doctor, but also takes time to experience the flora, fauna and island wonders. He writes about the history, society and culture with insight, respect and admiration, that Sacks is like an early explorer romanticizing the noble savage and rare fruits. It’s wonderful! The Man Who Mistook His wife for a Hat is a colorful collection of twenty plus essays about his patients who suffered from different kinds of

brain dysfunctions. Some include: Visual agnosia, in which a man cannot differentiate his wife from a hat; Korsakoff’s syndrome, happens when a patient cannot form new memories; and a lady with proprioception lost the ability to know her legs from her arms. These stories are more than just case histories. Sacks presents these brain conditions not as pathetic curiosities, but as interesting human beings functioning with a fascinating brain anomaly. With science he clarifies the neurological disconnect, with compassion he makes their lives matter as if their problem were an enlightening gift. The information he learns, gleans and presents humanizes those who suffer and shows us a side of ourselves. Sacks not only explored the mind, he challenged and tested it. He saw his patients as people, not subjects, and he made every effort to connect and make a difference. As a result, many of his patients thrived despite their disorder. In his autobiography, Sacks does not talk about death or being ill. Perhaps at the time of the publication he did not know that his once excised melanoma had spread. He describes himself as a writer first and doctor second. Oliver Sacks celebrated the miracles and mysteries of human cognition by writing about it in a language we can all understand. He loved music, life and words. He will be missed, but his work will live on. Thank you OWS. Rest in peace.

that RG3 is his franchise quarterback. They paid him like it, they brought in talent to support him, they treated him like he was the only player on the team that mattered. That’s a problem. And that left the head coach, both Mike Shanahan and Jay Gruden, the guy actually in charge of making the franchise run, left him out of the loop. It’s not so different than the situation in San Fran with York and Harbaugh: lack of communication, lack of similar expectations, disjointed paths to accomplish the same goal. Thing is, ultimately, the owner always wins. Even if the team keeps losing. So RG3 is benched for Kirk Cousins. And the Redskins ownership demonstrates how to mishandle a situation and offer your head coach only as much authority as he needs to fail, but not enough to see if he’ll succeed. I could dive into the Tom Brady settlement offer, or lack thereof, but it’s so trivial now, I’m just going to move on. If the NFL’s suspension remains, great. If not, the Patriots aren’t the same team they were last year, this isn’t a Super Bowl team, so Brady playing or missing in those 4 games won’t impact their longterm results. What will impact long-term results is who the head coach is: And 7 new teams anointed a new head coach over the off season. And of the 7 offseason coaching changes, Atlanta, Denver, San Francisco, New York, Buffalo, Oakland and Chicago, only 1 of those teams, Denver, chose a head coach from the offensive side of the ball. The other 6? All went with headmen who were known for their

defensive prowess, moxy and/or experience. And that got me thinking (and researching late into the night): Do defensive minds as head coaches fair better than offensive minds? Of course we could look through the annals of NFL history as a resource, but the game has shifted so radically through the decades, looking at the current climate will be sufficient. Here’s how it breaks down: Defensive Mind: Bill Belichick (NE), Todd Bowles (NYJ), Gus Bradley (Jax), Pete Carroll (Sea), Tom Coughlin (NYG), Jack Del Rio (Oak), Jeff Fisher (StL), John Fox (Chi), Marvin Lewis (Cin), Chuck Pagano (Ind), Mike Pettine (Cle), Dan Quinn (Atl), Ron Rivera (Car), Rex Ryan (Buf), Lovie Smith (TB), Mike Tomlin (Pit), Jim Tomsula (SF), Mike Zimmer (Min). Offensive Mind: Bruce Arians (Az), Jim Caldwell (Det), Jason Garrett (Dal), Jay Gruden (Wa), Chip Kelly (Phi), Gary Kubiak (Den), Mike McCarthy (GB), Mike McCoy (SD), Bill O’Brien (Hou), Sean Peyton (NO), Joe Philbin (Mia), Andy Reid (KC), Ken Wisenhunt (Ten) And then there’s John Harbaugh. Baltimore’s Super Bowl winning head coach. He spent nearly 2 decades as a college and NFL special teams coordinator with a dash of secondary coaching before getting the nod as the Ravens’ main man. I’m excluding his numbers from either side, although one could argue he’s more of a defensive minded coach, it would only further underscore the findings, so his inclusion isn’t necessary. The Findings: Of the 31 coaches in this evaluation, 18 (58%) are defensively minded to 13 (42%) who come from an offensive perspective. The winning percentages are nearly the same, .554 for the defensive coaches and .562 for the offensive coaches. BUT the biggest distinction in the win-loss columns is the sheer number of victories by defensive minded coaches. They have, between

the 18, 1,208 wins while the 13 offensive-minded coaches have nearly half, 605. The defensive coaches have 5 members with 100+ career win and 9 guys with 50+ career wins. The offensive coaches? Only 1 has reached the century mark, Andy Reid and only 4 have more than 50 wins. That means most of the longest tenured coaches in the NFL are defensive-minded. Why might that be? Perhaps because ownership doesn’t blame lack of a competent quarterback on a coach who spends more time building a line set to stalk signal callers. And because it’s so difficult to find a competent QB, ownership is more patient with defensive coaches. The trend shows up in championships as well. The defensive coaches have 8 Super Bowl wins in 16 tries while the offensive coaches have 2 wins in 5 trips. Only Sean Payton and Mike McCarthy (who had ball hawking defenses the years they won) are current offensive coaches with Super Bowl rings as an HC. Now, half of those rings by defensive coaches were won by Bill Belichick, but 3 other guys, Carroll, Coughlin and Tomlin all won rings with punishing defenses. Still more than all the active offensive coaches have won. So it seems the defensive-minded coaches have the advantage, both in experience, longevity and wins. And as the rule changes continue to favor offense, sharp defensive minds are going to be more valuable than ever. So there you go, a little tune up before we head into the regular season. Enjoy college football kicking off and next week, we’ll discuss the impact Will Smith’s new movie “Concussion” will have on the sport in general and the NFL specifically. Til then, draft well in your fantasy leagues, my friends.

Movie Reviews with Robin E. Simmons

MEANDERING ALONG THE BEATEN TRAIL A WALK IN THE WOODS

The Appalachian Trail is 2,100 miles long. You’d think that was long enough to extract some great gags as two older but still charismatic stars trek (star trek?), bond and grumble. The cinematic sub-genre of “mature” movie stars on a road trip or dubious quest is fully embraced here with Robert Redford and Nick Nolte hiking from Georgia to Main. Strangely, opportunities for rich cinematography are not seized – in fact, they are seemingly avoided in this spectacularly rugged region of great unspoiled natural beauty. However, Redford and Nolte do work their intermittent charm in this mostly predictable comic adventure as two unlikely guys, travel writer Bill Bryson (Redford) and his irascible, philandering former friend Katz (Nolte) -- who have very different motives for making the trek -- discover unwelcome adventure and unexpected insights when things get difficult. Emma Thompson plays Bryson’s loving stay-at-home wife. (They should’ve taken her along.) Ken Kwapis directs Bill Holderman’s screenplay based on Bryson’s bestseller. When it was over, I felt I had seen it all before but with different actors in a different setting. Now playing.

PICK OF THE WEEK: STEVE JOBS: THE MAN IN THE MACHINE

Documentarian Alex Gibney has a knack for exploring our fascination with cultic-like institutions and the products, the devotion and personalities associated with them. I first discovered filmmaker Gibney through ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM and the equally chilling 2007 Academy Award© winner TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE (about the killing of an innocent Afghani taxi driver). On display in his latest film are the jarring contradictions that made up Steve Jobs. This often-damning documentary reveals a complex individual -- a manipulating genius and controlling artist with more than a technical flair for profound, culture changing innovations. The definitive array of vintage but riveting interviews flesh out a picture of the Apple co-founder that in the end may not be familiar to most of us – even after reading Walter Isaacson’s revealing biography. Like Gibney’s terrific Scientology deconstruction GOING CLEAR, this examination of Jobs and the Apple cult raise disturbing questions about our reliance on addictive information systems, in this case wondrous hand-held gadgets that can not only access most of our collective human knowledge, but also connect us in real time. This CNN produced film, by turns scathing and searching, also takes an unsettling look at the outpouring of grief that swelled up when Job’s died. (His last words were, “Oh wow! Oh wow! Oh wow!”) Gibney considers our strange, deeply personal connection to technology and how Jobs was able to tap into that notion and emotion. I loved the generous use of archival audio and video images that let us a look at the 1971 beginnings of Jobs and his school chum Steve Wozniak’s partnering and inventive entrepreneurship. The editing by Michael Palmer is masterful and keeps the story flowing. The ups and downs of Jobs and his

astonishing career are even more gripping when viewed through his dark, character flaws. Now playing. NEW FOR THE HOME THEATER: GEMMA BOVERY

MON SEPTEMBER 7 “Madame Bovery,” Flaubert’s literary classic gets a naughty reboot in this delightful film that plays with the notion that life imitates art in the most unexpected ways when delicious, unsophisticated British beauty Gemma Bovary (Gemma Arterton) and her furniture-maker husband move to the village where Flaubert wrote his celebrated novel a hundred years ago. Gemma Arterton’s endearing performance in the title role is reason enough to see this sweetly alluring film. A big, sold out hit at our last Palm Springs International Film Festival, here’s a chance to see for the first time -- or again -- this visually lush and beguiling film. The amiably rambling story becomes more focused when Martin Joubert (Fabrice Luchini), a local baker and Flaubert fan, is smitten by the lovely Gemma and decides to be her mentor. Soon, Martin wheedles himself into Gemma’s life and begins imagining parallels between the purely fictional creature and the flesh and blood woman. But -- no spoiler here -- Gemma soon finds herself in a looming crisis when Joubert insists she is reliving the fate of Flaubert’s literary heroine. Circumstances soon demand that Gemma make an uncomfortable decision. Director Anne Fontaine has crafted an adroit adaptation of the eponymous graphic novel that is as much a sexy romance as it is a fête of French country life. Interesting extras on the disc include: “In The Footsteps of Emma – The making of Emma Bovary,” Master Class with Director Anne Fontaine,” “From Page to Screen” and a Graphic Novel Gallery. TRUST and POTUS 2016

T

he Pew Research Center has studied public trust in government going back to 1958. Back then, 73% of Americans trusted their elected leaders. Trust in government peaked in 1964 at the beginning of the Johnson administration (right after the JFK assassination) and began a slide until it hit a bottom at 10% in October, 2011. As the economy has improved, trust has risen to 19% meaning that ‘only’ eight in ten people do not trust those representing them. Split by party, 33% of Americans trust the Democratic Party versus 19% for the GOP. Satisfaction with the direction of the country is also near an all-time low at 24% Steadfast conservatives are the least trusting in what is going on in DC with only 7% comfortable with the actions in Washington DC with 43% describing

themselves as angry. Young Democrats have the most trust at 40% and the least anger at 5%. When it comes to governments’ role in business regulation, 85% of self-described conservatives feel regulation does more harm than good while 87% of liberals feel it is necessary to protect the public. Consensus between the left and right can be found in the belief that power in the United States is held by only a few business people. Despite this consensus, only 48% of conservatives feel that the economic system unfairly favors the powerful versus 88% for liberals. When we look at the major parties, the establishment candidates are struggling. Bernie Sanders, a self-described socialist, is giving Hilary Clinton fits. The GOP have a reality show underway with Trump leading in all major polls followed by Dr. Ben Carlson, retired Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and Ted Cruz of Texas. With the full backing of the GOP, Jeb Bush is gaining little traction while Scott Walker is being ignored despite the unlimited bank roll of king-makers, the Koch Brothers. If your opinion mirrors that of the majority of Americans and believe that the two major parties are bought and paid for,

Dale Gribow On The Law ATTORNEY SHARES BENEFITS OF A LIVING TRUST

A

living trust is a legal document that, just like a will, contains your instruction for what you want to happen to your assets when you die. However, unlike a will, a living trust avoids probate when you die. It can control all your assets and prevent the court from controlling your assets if you become incapacitated. A Living Trust avoids probate and prevents court control of assets at incapacity. This is because when you set up a living trust, you transfer (at that time) the assets from your name to the name of YOUR TRUST, which of course you control....For instance Gerald and Betty Ford, husband and wife to Dick and Jan Oliphant, trustees under trust dated September 2, 2015 (our anniversary). Legally you are no longer the owner of anything but do not panic because everything now belongs to YOUR trust. Thus there is nothing for the courts to control when you die or become incapacitated. This is an easy concept that keeps you and your family out of court. You do not lose control of your assets as you keep full control. As the trustee of your trust, you can do anything you could do before such as buying/selling assets, changing or even cancelling your trust etc. That is why it is called a REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST. YOU CAN REVOKE IT DURING YOUR LIFETIME. In addition you even file the same tax returns. Nothing changes but the names on the titles!!! All this takes less time than you would think... but it is the type of thing you can do now or have the courts do at your death. The old adage I quote kicks in yet again....People don’t plan to fail, they

fail to plan. So look into this NOW. Some clients ask whether joint ownership can avoid probate too? Unfortunately that is usually not the case. Using joint ownership usually just postpones probate. With most jointly owned assets, when one owner dies, full ownership does transfer to the surviving owner without probate. But if the owner dies without adding a new joint owner, or if both owners die at the same time, the asset must be probated before it can go to the heirs. Some clients consider using a corporate trustee. Though you can decide to be the trustee of your trust, some people select a corporate trustee which is often a bank or trust company to act as trustee or co- trustee now. This is often because you do not have the time, ability or desire to manage you own trust. This is also true if one spouse is ill. The corporate trustees are experienced investment managers and they are objective and reliable. Surprisingly their fees are usually very reasonable. A Durable Power of Attorney lets you name someone to manage your financial affairs if you are unable to do so. However, many financial institutions will not honor one unless it is on THEIR OWN FORM. Sometimes it works too well by giving someone a blank check to do whatever they want with your assets when that was not your intent. It can however, be very effective when used in concert with a Living Trust. Of course, it can be risky when used alone. The LIVING TRUST HAS THE FOLLOWING BENEFITS: 1. It avoids probate at death, including multiple

could it be time to think about voting for a third party candidate? With over 900 people in the running, there must be one candidate who matches your views. To use an analogy, if you don’t want Coke or Pepsi and would prefer water to quench your thirst, why choose soda? Alternative candidates represent water to those unhappy with the two soda system. Bernie Sanders ‘socialist’ views include eliminating unlimited campaign contributions given by corporations and nonprofit political action groups, two years free education at state colleges, dividing up the big banks so that they are not too big to fail, providing free basic healthcare to all Americans as well as a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. Left of Sanders is the Green Party which

probate if you own property in other states too. 2. It prevents court control of your assets at the time of your incapacity. 3. It brings all your assets together under one plan. 4. It provides maximum privacy. 5. It creates a quicker distribution of assets to beneficiaries. 6. Your assets can remain in trust until you want to beneficiaries to inherit. 7. It can reduce or eliminate estate taxes. 8. It is inexpensive, easy to set up and maintain. 9. It can be changed or cancelled at any time 10. It is difficult TO CONTEST. 11. It prevents court control of minor’s inheritances. 12. It can protect dependents with special needs. 13. It prevents unintentional disinheritance and other problems of joint ownership. 14. It provides professional management with the corporate trustee. 15. It gives you PEACE OF MIND. Clearly this is a confusing decision for the average lay person so do yourself a favor and call a lawyer now for an explanation. Do wait for the courts to make that decision for you. believes in global sustainability and a respect for diversity that is administered through a decentralized, community-based government where decisions are based on the beliefs of citizen’s a/k/a true democracy with twelve people running for their nomination. Left of the Green Party is the Peace & Freedom Party which advocates socialism, democracy, ecology, equality and healthcare for all. Four people are competing for their nod. If you are on the conservative side, the Libertarian Party may be for you. They believe in more personal independence and a greatly reduced government structure. Libertarians want to abolish social security, Medicare and the minimum wage. Twentyfour people running for their nomination. If that isn’t far enough right for you, California’s Daniel Jones represents the American Independent Party, a far right group that bases its doctrine on the Bible and freedom from ‘Liberal beliefs’ while Bob Whitaker of the American Freedom Party has a platform that wants to reestablish the ‘customs and heritage’ of White Americans. West Nile virus: Not just for the birds

B

oth have been tested as some of this year’s most destructive fires came dangerously close to the Napa Wine Region. Several fires have also burned near Paso Robles. Were still not out of the woods as drought conditions and warm temperatures continue reminds Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. Additionally, September is National Wine Awareness Month. Wine has become so vital to California, that it deserves a whole month. There’s a lot of talk on the health benefits of wine, but before you crack open that bottle and toast to your good health, here is what the experts say. Is wine fattening? Actually, researchers say they’ve found a compound in red wine and grapes that block immature fat cells’ ability to develop and grow. “I can dispute that says Chief DiGiovanna. My fat cells seem to be maturing!” There’s research on the heart health benefits of a daily glass (or two) of red

wine, as they say wine lowers blood pressure. Now who checks their blood pressure when drinking wine? The Greek physician Hippocrates considered wine a part of a healthy diet, and advocated its use as a disinfectant for wounds. I have several friends who are Hypocrites and could use some disinfecting from my life! Some studies suggest that grape juice may provide some of the same heart benefits of red wine, including reducing the risk of blood clots, reducing so-called bad cholesterol, and preventing damage to blood vessels in the heart. “Grape juice or wine? That’s an easy one!” My favorite spot for enjoying a great variety of wines is the Chateau at Lake La Quinta. Visit: thechateaulakelaquinta.com/index.html One thing is important - Always drink responsibly! Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna

Dr. Kadile, I just heard that more local mosquitoes were found to carry West Nile Virus. Should I be worried? -Krystal, Desert Hot Springs Krystal, West Nile has been detected in 91 mosquito samples so far this year in the Coachella Valley. This is the second highest year of West Nile activity in the valley in the past decade, second to 2012, when 105 samples were positive at the same time of year. Most people (70-80%) who become infected with the virus will have no symptoms. Only less than 1% of those infected will develop a serious neurologic illness, such as encephalitis or meningitis. The chance of dying if you develop the neurologic illness is about 10%. Krystal, the odds are in your favor and I wouldn’t be too worried about it. Most people get infected with West Nile Virus after they are bitten by an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. People over the age of 60 are at greatest risk for the severe form of the disease,

along with people with autoimmune conditions, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney dieases, and people who have received organ transplants. The most effective way to avoid West Nile Virus is to prevent yourself from being bitten by a mosquito. Mosquitoes are most active between dusk through dawn. Empty standing water from flowerpots, buckets and any other container you might have around the outside of the house since mosquitoes lay eggs in large bodies of water.

Doc, I just got over a cough, sore throat and runny nose. How do I know I didn’t have West Nile? -Oscar, Coachella Oscar, it sounds like your symptoms were more along the lines of a cold which is not caused by West Nile Virus. Approximately 7080% of those bitten by an infected mosquito will develop no symptoms. Of the remaining 20-30% that become symptomatic, they will develop a fever along with possible headache, body aches, diarrhea, vomiting or rash. In the rare cases when a neurologic illness develops, symptoms can include severe headache, high fever, neck stiffness, confusion, tremors, seizures or paralysis. West Nile Virus can be diagnosed with special lab tests of the blood or spinal fluid. There is no cure or vaccine for West Nile Virus. Most over the counter pain relievers can be used to treat the symptoms. Push fluids and rest. Infected individuals with the milder symptoms will typically recover on their own. Severe cases will require hospitalization.

Why is it called West Nile Virus? -Eric, Indio

The disease was first discovered in the West Nile district of Uganda in 1937.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY Week of September 3

ARIES (March 21-April 19): “Excess is the common substitute for energy,” said poet Marianne Moore. That’s a problem you should watch out for in the coming weeks. According to my astrological projections, you’re a bit less lively and dynamic than usual. And you may be tempted to compensate by engaging in extreme behavior or resorting to a contrived show of force. Please don’t! A better strategy would be to recharge your power. Lay low and take extra good care of yourself. Get high-quality food, sleep, entertainment, art, love, and relaxation. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): For a pregnant woman, the fetus often begins to move for the first time during the fifth month of gestation. The sensation may resemble popcorn popping or a butterfly fluttering. It’s small but dramatic: the distinct evidence that a live creature is growing inside her. Even if you are not literally expecting a baby, and even if you are male, I suspect you will soon feel the metaphorical equivalent of a fetus’s first kicks. You’re not ready to give birth yet, of course, but you are well on your way to generating a new creation. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): “Since U Been Gone” is a pop song recorded by vocalist Kelly Clarkson. She won a Grammy for it, and made a lot of money from its sales. But two other singers turned down the chance to make it their own before Clarkson got her shot. The people who wrote the tune offered it first to Pink and then to Hillary Duff, but neither accepted. Don’t be like those two singers, Gemini. Be like Clarkson. Recognize opportunities when they are presented to you, even if they are in disguise or partially cloaked. CANCER (June 21-July 22): “Going with the flow” sounds easy and relaxing, but here’s another side of the truth: Sometimes it can kick your ass. The rippling current you’re floating on may swell up into a boisterous wave. The surge of the stream might get so hard and fast that your ride becomes more spirited than you anticipated. And yet I still think that going with the flow is your best strategy in the coming weeks. It will eventually deliver you to where you need to go, even if there are bouncy surprises along the way. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “Money doesn’t make you happy,” said movie star and ex-California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. “I now have $50 million, but I was just as happy when I had $48 million.” Despite his avowal, I’m guessing that extra money would indeed make you at least somewhat happier. And the good news is that the coming months will be prime time for you to boost your economic fortunes. Your ability to attract good financial luck will be greater than usual, and it will zoom even higher if you focus on getting better educated and organized about how to bring more wealth your way. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “I stand up next to a mountain, and I chop it down with the edge of my hand.” So sang Jimi Hendrix in his raucous psychedelic tune “Voodoo Child (Slight Return).” We could view his statement as an example of delusional grandiosity, and dismiss it as meaningless. Or we could say it’s a funny and brash boast that Hendrix made as he imagined himself to be a mythic hero capable of unlikely feats. For the purposes of this horoscope, let’s go with the latter interpretation. I encourage you to dream up a slew of extravagant brags about the outlandish magic powers you have at your disposal. I bet it will rouse hidden reserves of energy that will enhance your more practical powers. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): It’s the phase of your cycle when you have maximum power to transform yourself. If you work hard to rectify and purify your inner life, you will be able to generate a transcendent release. Moreover, you may tap into previously dormant or inaccessible aspects of your soul’s code. Here are some tips on how to fully activate this magic. 1. Without any ambivalence, banish ghosts that are more trouble than they are worth. 2. Identify the one bad habit you most want to dissolve, and replace it with a good habit. 3.

20

Forgive everyone, including yourself. 4. Play a joke on your fear. 5. Discard or give away material objects that no longer have any meaning or use. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): I hope you’re not getting bored with all of the good news I have been delivering in recent weeks. I’m sorry if I sound like I’m sugarcoating or whitewashing, but I swear I’m simply reporting the truth about the cosmic omens. Your karma is extra sweet these days. You do have a few obstacles, but they are weaker than usual. So I’m afraid you will have to tolerate my rosy prophecies for a while longer. Stop reading now if you can’t bear to receive a few more buoyant beams. This is your last warning! Your web of allies is getting more resilient and interesting. You’re expressing just the right mix of wise selfishness and enlightened helpfulness. As your influence increases, you are becoming even more responsible about wielding it. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): When 16thcentury Spanish invaders arrived in the land of the Mayans, they found a civilization that was in many ways highly advanced. The native people had a superior medical system and calendar. They built impressive cities with sophisticated architecture and paved roads. They were prolific artists, and had a profound understanding of mathematics and astronomy. And yet they did not make or use wheeled vehicles, which had been common in much of the rest of the world for over 2,000 years. I see a certain similarity between this odd disjunction and your life. Although you’re mostly competent and authoritative, you are neglecting to employ a certain resource that would enhance your competence and authority even further. Fix this oversight! CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): If you have ever fantasized about taking a pilgrimage to a wild frontier or sacred sanctuary or your ancestral homeland, the next ten months will be an excellent time to do it. And the best time to plan such an adventure will be the coming two weeks. Keep the following questions in mind as you brainstorm. 1. What are your life’s greatest mysteries, and what sort of journey might bring an awakening that clarifies them? 2. Where could you go in order to clarify the curious yearnings that you have never fully understood? 3. What power spot on planet Earth might activate the changes you most want to make in your life? AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): When he died at the age of 77 in 1905, Aquarian author Jules Verne had published 54 books. You’ve probably heard of his science fiction novels *Journey to the Center of the Earth* and *Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.* He was a major influence on numerous writers, including Jean-Paul Sartre, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Arthur Rimbaud. But one of his manuscripts never made it into book form. When he finished it in 1863, his publisher refused to publish it, so Verne stashed it in a safe. It remained there until his great-grandson discovered it in 1989. Five years later, Verne’s “lost novel,” *Paris in the Twentieth Century,* went on sale for the first time. I suspect that in the coming months, you may have a comparable experience, Aquarius. An old dream that was lost or never fulfilled may be available for recovery and resuscitation. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “I enjoy using the comedy technique of self-deprecation,” says standup comic Arnold Brown, “but I’m not very good at it.” Your task in the coming weeks, Pisces, is to undermine your own skills at self-deprecation. You may think they are too strong and entrenched to undo and unlearn, but I don’t -- especially now, when the cosmic forces are conspiring to prove to you how beautiful you are. Cooperate with those cosmic forces! Exploit the advantages they are providing. Inundate yourself with approval, praise, and naked flattery. Homework: What other name would you give yourself if you could take a vacation from your present name? Why? FreeWillAstrology.com. The Kindness Challenge

I

t was peaceful on the plane. Most people were sleeping and I was deeply engrossed in my book. Somewhere over Arkansas I came across this quote, “Always keep your words soft and sweet, one day you might have to eat them.” I sighed and smiled. I was returning from Nashville after spending five days with my three best friends. My trip to Music City was filled with love and loads of laughter. Speaking to these women in soft, sweet tones was beyond easy. It was a natural as breathing. Reflecting on the quote I thought about times when soft and sweet does not come easy. Another quote popped into my head, this one from the Bible, “Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other.” Now that, my friend, is one tall order and anything but natural. Most of us have a certain someone in our life who challenges us to our very core when it comes to turning our cheek and offering up some sugar. Often that person is a family member which makes loving communication next to impossible. The question is, how do we successfully deal with the brother who is hurtful or the step-sister whose dysfunction turns a civil relationship into a gargantuan endeavor?

Let’s break it down into bite-sized pieces. Begin with the understanding that it’s going to be painful. Yes, I know the thought of serving up soft and sweet to your arch enemy is cringeworthy. Swallowing your pride and giving kindness to the person in your life who least deserves your love takes guts and grit. Know that occasionally it will come back to bite you. Kindness is a choice. You decide. Should you give into the desire for instant gratification by telling that person how you really feel, or is it better to opt for tender hearted words? The good news is taking the high road, makes you a better person. At the end of the day, kindness allows you to sleep well at night knowing your behavior was beyond reproach. Feel like challenging yourself this week? Commit to acting in a loving manner to “you know who.” No doubt the individual hardest to love probably needs it the most. If you take the time to study his or her circumstances, you may understand some of the misguided behavior. Even if you cannot come to terms with why your friend or relative acts out, proceed with compassion verbiage. In the end, soft and sweet is much more pleasing to the palate. SQUARE PEG, ROUND HOLE

H

ave you attempted placing a square peg in a round hole? Perhaps not literally but figuratively speaking you have at one point or another. Obviously the shapes do not coincide. The idiocy simply translates, trying to fit two things that do not belong together. Often we try something and sometimes is doesn’t work but you see and feel the potential so you try again. If capitulating up isn’t your nature then you will try, try and try again. I am an advocate of not giving up easily. One may view this as being obdurate but I like to see it as giving it your best effort. Personally, I will exhaust all possibilities to make something work. However, if you try, try and try again with the same outcome, you may have wasted your time. Or, you can be optimistic and relish in the valuable lesson you have learned. Lessons learned are always advantageous. Life serves up numerous mismatches and these will come and go naturally. Let’s take for instance your job. You have to pay the bills but you feel unsettled about your position. It simply doesn’t serve you any longer, you may be bored, or you are

no longer challenged. You attempt day in and day out to enjoy your profession. Yet, you know in your heart it is clearly time for a change. You recognize you are procrastinating, attempting to place a square peg into a round hole. You stay for job security. Reconcile a way to find peace with your profession. Commence to roadmap your future. If you remain stagnant this can result in depression, guilt, or anger. You will be the only one to blame. You have a choice to stay in an uncomfortable circumstance. If you do not like the feeling then be transformational. When it comes to personal relationships, desperately trying to fit a square peg into a round hole will render you disappointed. Live out your purpose. If you are unwilling to change and as is your friend/partner/ spouse, do yourself a favor and move on. All you are doing is spinning a counter productive wheel. Affect a change. Find the freedom, love and peace you deserve. Bronwyn Ison is the owner of Evolve Yoga. www.e-volveyoga.com
