“Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe”

alm Springs Art Museum opened the highly anticipated exhibition Killer Heels: The Art of the HighHeeled Shoe on September 5, which will be on view through December 13, 2015. The exhibition merges fashion, film, and material culture, while exploring the fashion world’s most coveted object, its rich cultural history, and its complex relationships to fantasy, functionality, identity and power.

Organized thematically, Killer Heels features more than 110 contemporary high heels and 50 historical designs drawn from designer archives, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s renowned costume collections. Beyond the archetypal forms – stiletto, wedge, and platform – the emphasis is on designs that play with the sculptural, architectural, and artistic possibilities of the high heel using innovative or unexpected materials or techniques; and that push the limits of functionality, wearability, and even conventional beauty, through surprising structure, shape, or height.

Presented in arched pedestals the heels will be exhibited in six themes throughout open pathways of the gallery housing the exhibition. The themes are “Revival and Reinterpretation,” “Rising in the East,” “Glamour and Fetish,” “Architecture,” “Metamorphosis,” and “Space Walk.”

Spanning the 17th century to the present, each of the themes reflects the design of the shoes, shifting fashion trends, social preferences, and surprising formal similarities across cultures and time.

The exhibition includes a selection of extraordinary high heels by more than 50 contemporary designers, including Céline, Chanel, Christian Louboutin, Alexander McQueen, Prada, and United Nude. These shoes are presented in compelling visual dialogues with historical high heels. Examples include exquisite 18th century court heels, tiny 19th century Chinese slippers for bound feet, and iconic 20th century heel designs

by Salvatore Ferragamo, Delman, and Roger Vivier for Christian Dior.

In addition, Killer Heels features six original short films that take the high heel as a central motif. Commissioned for the exhibition, the films explore a range of provocative cultural, social, sexual, ideological and political themes, demonstrating the enormous power of the

high heel in the collective imagination. Artists include Ghada Amer and Reza Farknondeh, Steven Klein, Zach Gold, Nick Knight, Marilyn Minter, and Rashaad Newsome.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue available for purchase in the Museum Store and Bradford W. Bates Vault: the Museum Design Store.

Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe is organized by the Brooklyn Museum.

BABE’S: Brewery Of The Year

T

his week California State Senator Jeff Stone presented Babe’s Bar-BQue & Brewhouse with a Senatorial Proclamation in honor of being named the 2015 California State Brewery of the Year at the recent CA State Fair in Sacramento.

At the competition, Babe’s also took home a Gold medal in the Dark Lager category for their Blackfin Lager, and their Belgian Vanilla Blonde Ale earned a Gold medal in the Strong Belgian Ale Category.

DHS Chamber of Commerce Candidates Forum Draws A Packed House!

A

s a hard-working, socio-economically challenged bedroom and spa community, Desert Hot Springs residents filled the high school auditorium while many more watched online Thursday, September 10, to hear what candidates for City Council and Mayor had to say about the future of their beloved but often troubled town.

The event was hosted by the Desert Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce. Seven citizens are running for two seats on city council: Russell Betts (incumbent), Larry Buchanan, Richard Duffle, Asia Horton, Jeanette Jaime, Yvonne Parks (former DHS Mayor) and Anayeli Zavala.

In the Mayor’s race, current council member Scott Matas is the only candidate challenging incumbent Adam Sanchez.

“The Candidates Forum is important for the voters of Desert Hot Springs,” said Heather Coladonato, President and CEO of the Desert Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce. “This event brings everyone under one roof and

provides a side-by-side view of the issues that concern voters.”

Local CBS anchorman Kris Long was charming, witty and fair as he managed the time limitations and moderated the forum.

Univision’s Ricardo Vela and Desert Sun’s Jesse Marx presented the questions, asking about social and economic issues. The candidates responded with mostly informed answers. Topics ranged from support for a gay pride parade, the progress of an arts and entertainment district, to tax increases and economic development.

“The Chamber is the city’s business advocate,” said Coladonato. “Our role is to provide information and to represent the interest of businesses with all levels of government – local, state and federal.”

The Chamber compiled the questions from business members, community leaders and residents. As hosts, the Chamber is nonpartisan.

“It’s the Chamber’s job to stay on top of issues that concern and impact the local

business economy,” said Coladonato. “The forum brings relevant items to light and hopefully reveals the positions of the possible future leaders.”

The three-hour event was divided in half with council candidates first, followed by the mayoral candidates. Well organized and controlled, many questions were asked during lightning-rounds allowing a wide range of pertinent topics to be covered. City council candidates were able to present their views as well as show some “personality” to the audience.

“It is nice to see some new faces taking an interest and wanting to make a positive impact in the city,” said Coladonato. With a population that is 60% Latino and 12% Black, Desert Hot Springs is starting to reflect that demographic in the run for its leadership roles.

Where as the council candidates were mostly agreeable, the mayoral segment was more contentious. The mayoral candidates were allowed more time to express their opinions, which often spurred further debate and political attacks. The audience was far more vocal with boos and applause during the

La Quinta Arts Foundation Recruits Community Partners to Participate in American Craft Week Oct. 2-11, 2015

a Quinta Arts Foundation (LQAF) has partnered with eight organizations across the Coachella Valley to offer a diverse slate of arts and crafts activities to promote American Craft Week (ACW) — a national ten-day celebration of handmade craft that encompasses more than a thousand events in all fifty states. La Quinta Arts Foundation won a Star Award as Exceptional Non-profit Participant for its efforts during American Craft Week 2014.

This is La Quinta Arts Foundation’s second year participating in American Craft Week with new alliances that include over 300 members of the Coachella Valley Quilt Guild, and the annual Quiltfest Oasis Palm Springs showcase, as well as S.C.R.A.P. Gallery / Coachella Valley Art Center.

Along with the new partners, all six of last year’s American Craft Week participants are returning to collaborate on the 2015 celebration: La Quinta Museum, La Quinta Historical Society, La Quinta Library, Friends of the La Quinta Library, Old Town Artisan Studio, and Sm’art Studio. Collectively they will offer

more than 20 craft themed events and activities including exhibits and receptions, plus a host of workshops for children, teens and adults. Many of the activities are offered free of charge. Follow the Thread—A Salute to American Craft Week: LQAF and the City of La Quinta, in association with Coachella Valley Quilt Guild, will present an exhibition at the La Quinta Community Gallery in La Quinta Civic Center (78495 Calle Tampico, La Quinta, CA 92253) that will run Sept. 8 to Nov. 20, 2015. The gallery will be open to the public Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm.

This exhibit is a glimpse into the fascinating world of modern-day quilt artists who are able to transform a fabric canvas into a multi-faceted art piece by imagining the possibilities contained in a bolt of fabric and a spool of thread and will feature thirty hanging quilts, plus twelve quilt sculptures. Quilt artists are continually pushing the boundaries of this medium as they explore new directions for this American craft.

A lecture and reception for the exhibit will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 from 4 to 5 pm in City Council Chambers. Laura Wasilowski, renowned textile artist, teacher and creator of hand dyed fabrics and threads, will give a

“It is imperative that the Chamber get business friendly individuals elected into office for the success and well-being of the city,” said Coladonato. “This year the Chamber Board will be interviewing all of the candidates one-on-one for possible endorsements.”

The Desert Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce has successfully served the community since it was established in 1947 (sixteen years before the city incorporated).

However, many on the current City Council have denied support, membership and involvement with the Chamber. In fact, the Chamber office was forced to move its location after the city stopped its participation with the organization and opted not to renew its service contract for the management of the Visitors Center.

“As a Chamber, it’s our desire to see the business climate change by way of active partnership with the city’s elected officials,” said Coladonato. “It is only through strong leadership, collaboration and support that the city will continue to grow, be successful and benefit all concerned.”

Election day is Tuesday, November 3rd.

“One of our beautiful friends, Gabriella ‘Gabba’ Evaro, approached us and asked if she could put on a fundraising event to help us along the way with the costs of creating a business. At first, we were both taken aback and though grateful, declined the offer. Her insistence and enthusiasm soon changed our minds. Suddenly we saw just how many people support and believe in us, and were willing to donate time, talents and raffle items to make this happen. Kirk and I couldn’t be more humbled by this offer of generosity from such an amazing community. This is where I find myself believing that Karma is a real thing.”

The event will be held this Saturday at a new and beautifully unique venue in Joshua Tree - the JT Trading Post. Equipped with a full stage, sound and lighting system, many of the high and low desert’s most notable bands have already graced it’s stage. Donating their incredible talents for this event, are bands Lucky Bones, Canadian Tuxedo, The Adobe Collective, and The Acoustic Movement.

reams are brewing in Joshua Tree, California, and the music community is rallying to help bring them to fruition.

Perhaps it is because no one understands the importance and power as well as the cost of making dreams materialize like Joshua Tree’s deep well of talented troubadours, but when Kirk and Nancy Roland whispered their dream into the ears of some very talented, benevolent musicians, a festival erupted.

Nancy Roland shared the story with CV Weekly: “Kirk and I were introduced into brewing by none other than our youngest daughter approximately 4 years ago. Our daughter works at one of our little local cafés, The Crossroads.

As a result of a conversation with one of her customers, we ended up accepting an offer to join him for a home brew demonstration in his little kitchen. We loved the idea of being able to brew beer, as we are most definitely a hands on/ all in couple. On Father’s day, our daughter Jolie presented Kirk with a few brewing essentials.

This is really when the beast was created.”

At first, we thought this was going to be just another interest that we could enjoy doing together, but it shortly became a passion.

Purchasing more equipment and storage items became a necessity. We began purchasing recommended reading materials and picking up a few more brewing items here and there.

At first we brewed in our kitchen in a large pot on the stove using extract brewing kits. We then moved up to a larger brewing system that Kirk put together. This allowed us to go from brewing 5 gallon batches of extract brews to brewing 15 gallons of all grain beers. Every weekend, we became completely consumed with creating recipes, sourcing materials, and brewing. Then there’s was the job of taste testing, a part of the process we have never been short of volunteers for. Rooms filled up with bottles, fermenters and kegs very quickly!”

“Kirk is a business development manager and service director, and I am a production and procurement manager. We first considered opening up a brewing supply house. Our studies, however, did not show a large enough market base to create a viable business.

We threw around plenty of ideas on how to introduce the community to home brewing in order to create a market, but knew that it would take some time, so we started to build a plan of opening up a local tap room and supply house. We know that this will take a lot of time and money. We are taking a slow but forward motion with our idea.”

“Kirk and I participated in craft brew competitions understanding the need to create recognition for ourselves outside the community. We currently have received 4 awards; 2 gold, 1 silver, and one first place for four different styles of beer. We have plans to continue to build our portfolio through competitions.”

They have released six studio albums, one EP (The Other Side), four DVDs, one compilation album (Good Times, Bad Times... Ten Years of Godsmack), and one live album (Live and Inspired). The band has had three consecutive number-one albums (Faceless, IV, and The Oracle) on the Billboard 200. Godsmack also has 20 top ten rock radio hits, including 15 songs in the top five, which is a record number of top ten singles by a rock artist. In February of 1995, after being behind the drums for more than 23 years, Sully Erna decided to start a new band. It was only a matter of time before he realized he needed to take charge and step out from behind the kit to front the band himself. One year and a couple of member changes later Godsmack was born. Sully Erna, Robbie Merrill and Tony Rombola hit the studio and recorded their first CD titled All Wound Up. They did this over one weekend for a measly twenty six-hundred dollars. Over the next two years, the band played throughout the Boston scene with drummer Joe Darco and began earning a strong reputation of being a great live band. The noise they were making in the New England area created a snowball effect like no other.

Godsmack began drawing in bigger and bigger audiences to their live shows. Their CD began circulating through the streets of Boston and eventually landed in the hands of a DJ for WAAF, a Boston radio station. WAAF put “Keep Away” into heavy rotation and it quickly soared to the #1 spot at the station. Newbury Comics, a New England record store chain, agreed to sell the CD on consignment and the grind continued. Shortly after the success of “Keep Away” Godsmack went back into the studio and recorded a single titled “Whatever”, which became the new local favorite on WAAF. It took off in the blink of an eye and the race was on.

As a result of the single doing so well, Godsmack’s CD began selling hundreds of copies per week, and soon escalated to more than one thousand copies per week, becoming the second best-selling CD in that chain of stores. Godsmack’s live shows began selling out throughout New England, which in return created more requests for their music on the local radio stations and more CD sales. On and on it went until the summer of 1998 when Republic/Universal stepped up and signed the band to their label.

Joe Darco was soon replaced by Tommy Stewart, All Wound Up was re-mastered and the artwork was changed. The finished self-titled debut CD Godsmack hit the shelves six weeks later.

Godsmack hit the road on their first headlining tour, The Voodoo Tour. The bands strong live performances, coupled with high record sales and growing number of fans, landed them time slots on Ozzfest 1999 and 2000, a European tour with Black Sabbath and an appearance at Woodstock 1999.

In 2000, Godsmack released their second CD, Awake. This album’s title track dominated rock radio and broke chart records throughout 2000 and 2001. The CD’s instrumental track “Vampires” earned the band its first Grammy nomination.

Godsmack toured Awake selling out arenas and outdoor venues nationwide. They gave their fans their money’s worth with a gothic stage, video and pyro, lots of pyro! In 2002, Sully was asked to A&R the soundtrack for the motion picture The Scorpion King, the third installment in the Mummy saga. The song Godsmack wrote and performed lived up to its title: “I Stand Alone” became the #1 single at Rock Radio and the most played Active Rock song in 2002 for 14 weeks straight.

After spending over four years on the road the band decided to take a break before heading back into the studio. It was during this break that Shannon Larkin, a friend of Sully’s for 15 years, formerly of Wrathchild America, AMEN and Ugly Kid Joe, was asked to replace Tommy Stewart.

The new line up headed to Miami to write and record the bands third CD. Faceless was released in April of 2003 and became the #1 selling record in America of that week. Faceless also brought another tour that ran 23 months strong including two more Grammy nominations for “I Stand Alone” and an 11 month international arena tour with the kings of metal, Metallica!!

In March of 2004, Godsmack released their first acoustic EP, The Other Side which included new versions of previous hits like “Keep Away”, “Re-Align” and a haunting new version of the Navy’s recruit song, “Awake”! This also spawned a side tour of its own. Godsmack filled in breaks from the big stage with Metallica with intimate storytelling acoustic shows giving their fans the explanation behind the title, The Other Side.

With rich velvet curtains, stone gargoyles and strings of Christmas lights illuminating theaters around the country, fans had a whole new experience of the true talents of this unique foursome. Stripped down to nothing, Godsmack continued to deliver one of the best acoustic performances of our time.

Godsmack ended 2004, and two CD cycles, with a nostalgic New Year’s Eve performance at the Hard Rock Café, in Orlando, Fl. During this amazing three hour performance, Godsmack rolled through just about every song in their catalog as well as a few well known cover songs.

The band released Godsmack IV on April 25, 2006 and their latest album, The Oracle, hit the streets on May 4, 2010. In July, the band revealed dates for an upcoming North American fall headline tour. Fans in the Coachella Valley will get to see them live on Saturday, November 13th.

eek #4 of the CV Open Mic Competition Fall edition brought on several new bands, rappers and musicians to battle it out on the stage! DJ Alex Updike kept the crowd on their feet in between performances. Exciting audience giveaways from the Mary Pickford Theatre were awarded to the loudest and rowdiest of the crowd. Once all of the musicians performed and the judge vote (50%) was tallied and added to the audience applause score (50%), it was The Classy Mother Fu?kers who rocked the stage hardest and won 1st place.

The band chose to take home 1 hour of studio time from JEM Productions and will now move on to the Semi Finals in November. If they win there, they’ll compete in the Grand Finals for a shot at a MTV Quality Music Video Production from Desert C.A.M. Studios/Winmill Films and award winning Director Chip Miller, plus a $500 trip to Las Vegas from Crater Lake Spirits, as well as an Artist Development Session from Grammy nominated Producer Ronnie King, and a Promotional Photo Shoot from Visions Photography. 2nd place was awarded to newcomer band, Edith, who chose to take home a Record Alley Gift Certificate.

n addition to guitars and horns, percussion is one of my favorite musical accompaniments. The BMW Palm Springs Smooth Jazzfest (tm) which is being produced by myself and my PR Production Partner Sheree Lillie of Lillie PR on October 5, in the Riviera Palm Springs Grand Ballroom will include 2 percussionists.

Today I am focusing on Guillermo Yslas who will be performing with smooth jazz guitarist Joe Baldino and his 10 piece band.

His story is charming and a true ‘live your dream’ example.

A Mexican-American native to California, Guillermo comes from a very musical family.

He is one of four brothers; Gilbert, Jerry and Ramon, who are in the music business.

Guillermo has many credits to his name, his passion for life and music has been demonstrated through his performances with the likes of Peter White (Smooth Jazz artist, Basia), David Pack (Ambrosia) Pete Escovedo, Ronnie Laws, Niles (Smooth Jazz artist), John Angotti (Worship Music recording artist) and Bobby Figueroa (Beach Boys drummer, vocalist). Guillermo is presently on tour with, Mexican-American Recording and Performing Super Star, MARISELA, in the US, Mexico and South America.

Guillermo explained that his father was not a musician but a hard working blue collar guy who loved music so he got his sons into music lessons at an early age. He started in trumpet lessons through the 4th grade and then began guitar in junior high. It wasn’t until high school when he was thrown into playing percussion that he found his true love. He came out that night and plunged his hands in ice water to kill the pain, but he was smitten. He talked about getting a call to play percussion for Peter White, and then his brother Ray told him that he had also received the same call. So the two brothers did a dual performance with Peter White and David Pack.

As mentioned his brother Ray is also a very famous percussionist. Guillermo and his brothers recognized the talent in Ray and invested in him by purchasing his first set of percussion equipment and lessons for him.

Since then, Ray has played percussion for a number of major artists the likes of David Sandborn, Marcus Miller, and Shadow Fax, just to mention a few. Guillermo is very proud of all three brothers.

Guillermo worked for AT&T for 30 years and when he retired he asked his wife if he could do what he loved, playing music. His wife told him to ‘go for it’ and that is exactly what he has been doing ever since.

He first played with Joe Baldino a couple of years ago when asked by Gary Metz. He listened to Baldino’s smooth sounds and made the trip. He never rehearsed with the band but he said it was ‘magic’.

Guillermo will bring an amazing energy to the band and we are delighted to have him.

BMW of Palm Springs Smooth Jazzfest will feature Joe and a full band of 10. There is a lot of buzz about this event which will feature 5 national acts. Headlining will be Greg Adams (Tower of Power founding member) and his 10 piece band. Slim Man (13 CDs) will be opening the show with his smooth vocals and top notch band including Greg Vail on sax. Blues sensation and 4 time national blues awards artist Deanna Bogart will be performing some of her hits. Joe Baldino and his 10 piece band will take the show upward to the finale.

The VIP Afterparty for artists, celebrities and VIP ticket holders with Joe Baldino and his band will be holding a jam at the after party which runs from 10:15 until midnight.

Harpo, Bo Diddley and Eddie Holland was cheekily entitled Young, Gifted And Blue.

The EP shot to the top of I-tunes Blues chart, remaining at #1 for six weeks. An intense bidding war broke out between labels eager to sign these teen sensations. The band signed with Mercury in the U.K. and Virgin/EMI in the U.S. By now, their youthful prowess had also attracted the attention of heavy hitters like Elton John, (who signed them to his Rocket Music management group), as well as Dave Grohl, Paul Weller, Roger Daltrey and Jeff Beck.

As the guys began to write their own songs, the music of Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe provided the perfect tutorials. With veteran producer Chris Thomas, (Sex Pistols, Pretenders) behind the boards, they recorded their first full-length debut. Snapshot arrived in the U.K. in late 2013, and was released in the States in early 2014.

Snapshot was nearly perfect. The Strypes offered a sharp distillation of their myriad influences, giving them a 21st century spin. A few well-chosen covers by Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and Nick Lowe rounded out the album.

Less than two years after Snapshot was released, the Cavan lads are back with their second long-player, Little Victories. The record opens with the triple-pronged attack of “Get Into It,” “I Need To Be Your Only” and “A Good Night’s Sleep And Cab Fare Home.”

“Get Into It” wraps grinding guitars around a tick-tock rhythm. The lyrics weigh the pros and cons of anonymous cyber-sex; physical gratification, sans emotional connection. The dilemma is best summed up by this trenchant couplet, “Love is easy on the wrist, but hard on the chest.” Searing harmonica fills accent the instrumental break which slows to a crawl as McClorey unleashes a Glam-tastic solo.

Marauding bass lines connect with streamlined guitars and conga-riffic percussion on “I Need To Be...” The lyrics wax rhapsodic over the perfect girl who has everything; “She’s the bag, she’s the leaf, she’s the sugar, the full cup baby.” The momentum accelerates as layered guitars careen and crash. Just as quickly everything downshifts and then revs up, and slows down again before grinding to a halt.

“A Good Night’s Sleep...” sets the scene for a prickly seduction. Farrelly’s no-nonsense mien is echoed by a pummeling back-beat, swaying guitars that dart and pinball through the melody, and lush organ colors. “I’m well past good and ready, but I’m too well on to keep it steady/And I think we should get hot and heavy, Baby don’t you agree?”

As much as their debut fixated on a comboplatter of Blues, British Invasion, Pub Rock and Punk, the new album expands the Strypes musical horizons exponentially. The first single, “Eighty-Four” opens with a walloping overture that wouldn’t seem out of place in a “James Bond” action sequence. Prowling bass lines, skittering guitars that pinwheel and flutter, plus a pile-driving back beat, almost overwhelm this tale of instant attraction. He puts the moves on a woman who gives him “Aha Shake Heartbreak, 4 to the floor.” (Nice Kings Of Leon homage).

Meanwhile, “Queen Of The Half Crown” is a gritty blast of ‘70s Glam that echoes New York Dolls and Mott The Hoople. Initially, the guitars are stripped down and tensile, halfway through the tempo shifts to an arch martial cadence and McClorey rips a series of slash and burn solos that would make an old cock-rocker blush.

The record hits the half-way mark on “Three Streets And A Village Green,” a stark meditation on instant success. Here, the band blends strafing guitar riffs, slinking bass lines and a sand-blasted, hop-scotch rhythm that feels like an unholy alliance between The Sweet and Black Sabbath.

The melody and instrumentation navigate a series of dizzying aural switchbacks that would have a lesser band reaching for the GPS. It’s a tour-de-force, and it isn’t even the best song here.

That distinction belongs to three tracks, “Now She’s Gone,” “Cruel Brunette” and “Status Update.” They offer a triptych of perfection.

“Now…” is piloted by monster wah-wah riffage, thrumming bass lines and a rattlesnake shake back-beat. Seemingly, the lyrics offer a bitter kiss-off to an ex-flame; “She used to be my queen, my always and everything/But I cut all my ties clean, Henry the 8th.”

But scratch beneath the surface and this guy is licking his wounds and reevaluating his options. A mournful bottle-neck solo underscores the heartbreak, “I’ll tell everybody that I’m the shadow of the shadow that I used to be/And I can’t love her so she won’t love me and she’s gone.” Angst has never been so danceable.

“Cruel Brunette” begins tentatively, with an off-kilter rhythm and squally feedback guitar, the lyrics sketch out a seduction scenario that begins promisingly. As the tempo increases, the melody splits the difference between Ska and Punk. Here, Farrelly navigates the rocky shoals of gender politics. “Why do women act like they’re doing men a favour, it’s not like they can live without relationships either.” This sharp mash-up of styles echo Billy Bragg, English Beat

“2015 Palm Springs Open” at ARCHANGEL GALLERY

T

he “Sophomore Slump” is a true musical malady. It strikes some and misses others. Artists who achieve critical acclaim or commercial success (or both) with their debut, turn around and release a second album so far off the mark, that their original accomplishment feels like a fluke. Most musicians have their whole life to create their first album, maybe 18 months to come up with a second one.

Musicians who have succumbed to the sophomore slump include the Go-Go’s, Living Colour, Terence Trent D’Arby, Weezer, Tracy Chapman and the Strokes. Wonderful debuts were followed by mediocrity. Some artists, like Elvis Costello, A Tribe Called Quest, Led Zeppelin, The Cars and Adele, met or, in some cases, exceeded expectations. The Strypes fall into that latter category.

Originally, childhood mates Josh McClorey (lead guitar, vocals), Pete O’Hanlon (bass) and Evan Walsh (drums), bonded over their parents’ extensive record collections. Barely in their teens, the lads from Cavan, Ireland formed a band in 2008.

Rather than look to contemporary music for inspiration, they were heavily influenced by Rock pioneers like Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley, Blues giants like Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon, British Invasion-era forefathers like the Yardbirds and (Brian Jones-led) Rolling Stones.

Along the way, they immersed themselves in the Pub Rock stylings of Dr. Feelgood and Brinsley Schwartz and the pure Punk of the Clash and The Jam. With the addition of school mates Conor Bates and Jack Hayden, the Strypes made their live debut at a Christmas concert held at their primary school. Bates and Hayden each quit the band by 2012 and the boys recruited 15 year old Ross Farrelly to handle lead vocals and harmonica duties.

Despite their tender ages, the band began gigging around town, which proved a great way to hone their chops. Initially, they concentrated on covering their musical idols. They released home recordings on I-tunes. The four song EP, consisting of songs by Billy Boy Arnold, Slim

and Squeeze.

Finally, “Status Update” is simply thrilling.

Scuzzy Fuzz guitar licks slither through growling bass lines and the lads’ beloved Bo Diddley beat. Bluesy harmonica notes punctuate each verse. Farrelly effortlessly slips into the skin of an unrepentant swain who is just “a snake in a world full of rats.” Meanwhile, McClorey unspools a series of yowling, yet succinct solos that would make Brian Jones proud.

Other interesting tracks include “(I Wanna Be Your) Everyday” and “Best Man.” The former marks the only time the action slows for a kinda sorta ballad accented by flange-y guitar riffs and plangent keys. The latter finds the boys experiencing a hint of self-doubt. But the whipsaw guitar riffs, spitfire vocals and crackling percussion contradict their crisis of confidence.

The album closes with “Scumbag City” a soaring and affectionate swipe at their hometown. The chiming guitars and defiant vocals suggest a newfound affinity for homegrown heroes like Stiff Little Fingers and Thin Lizzy.

The deluxe version of Little Victories adds four bonus tracks, “Fill The Spaces In,” “Lovers Leave,” “Rejection” and “G.O.V.” Pony up the extra dough, as none of these songs constitute filler. “Fill...” offers a riotous rollercoaster ride that camouflages some angry working-man blues. Speedy guitar licks collide with a stopstart rhythm and pounding piano fills. It’s a lesson in controlled chaos, ala’ mid-period Who or Kinks Elvis Costello’s menacing Punk/Reggae classic, “Watching The Detectives,” provides the melodic blueprint for “Lovers Leave.” As always, these Cavan wunderkinds up the ante, adding hints of Power Pop, a sidewinding guitar solo and urgent harmonica notes. “Rejection” is a jittery slice of Punk Rock bluster, and “G.O.V.” is a souped-up Skank-tacular finish to an astonishing album.

The best way to describe Little Victories is an embarrassment of riches. The melodies, instrumentation and arrangements are sharp and ambitious. The lyrics tackle typical teenage themes with an articulate language that is potent, yet economical. These boys exhibit an eloquence that belies their youth.

The 16 songs on the Strypes second effort are much more than a collection of “little victories.” This album represents an exciting and triumphant leap forward. That is evident from the second the needle hits the groove.

A

ny time a new gallery opens in the Coachella Valley, it is wonderful for all. Art is important – to our psyche as well as our local economy.

Art tourism is on the rise and the lure of wonderful galleries fuels that tourism.

Michael Fiacco founded Archangel Gallery in Seattle in 2010. Michael’s concept of showcasing contemporary artists found a home in Palm Springs in late 2013, when he partnered with local artists Alex Koleszar, Jerry Hanson, and Eduardo Carraizo. Since that time, Archangel Gallery has hosted diverse artists working in ceramics, encaustic, mixed media, watercolors, and photography to the Valley.

This year, the gallery will be taking a slightly different direction with the departure of Michael Fiacco. “Although Michael has left the gallery to pursue other opportunities we are still dedicated to focusing on contemporary artists. This season, however, we plan to concentrate almost exclusively on Coachella Valley and High Desert area artists,” said Co-owner/curator Alex Koleszar. “We feel doing so will create an incredible opportunity to showcase the vast and deep range of talent that resides in the region to our approximate 2 million tourists who come to Palm Springs every year.”

To that end Archangel Gallery will host a juried show, 2015 Palm Springs Open, featuring artists of the Palm Springs Art Museum Artist Council. “We have selected 40 artists, representing work in various medium,” continued Alex. “This show opens September 16 and will run through October 11, 2015. The show is a prelude to a group show, entitled PS... There’s More to Palm Springs. That show will run from December 10 through December 31 and

will feature a select number of artists from the 2015 Palm Springs Open.”

“Jerry, Eduardo and I are working artists as well as gallerists. Our individual work, like the Valley, is uniquely are own. We have each submitted work to juried shows; we have been the focus of solo exhibitions.

We understand how important a gallery is to an artist. We know first-hand that the opportunity to show one’s work is thrilling, fulfilling but also nerve wracking. Archangel Gallery is well aware of the pressures of the art world. We have created and will continue to create opportunities for local artists. That is part of our mission as artists and as gallerists. Bring Coachella Valley art into the light,” noted Alex.

2015 Palm Springs Open will feature work from Peggy Vermeer, Bradley Giles, Robert Bradshaw, Dale Lamson and Debra Thompson among others. “We selected works based on digital image submissions from over 120 local artists. It is never easy to jury a show and to jury one’s peers is more difficult. We believe the works that were selected are in line with the contemporary vision of Archangel Gallery, and are reflective of the vast array of talent here in the Coachella Valley. We hope that the public will agree with our selections.”

For Alex, Jerry and Eduardo this will be their first show curated by them. “We are committed to keeping Archangel in the forefront of the Valley art scene. This area is fortunate to host many galleries. We each offer something different. But we all work together for a common goal – that Art matters,” concluded Alex.

Cassie, From Fear to Love

T

he vast majority of dogs adopted and rescued from shelters are happy, well adjusted, tail wagging canines, instinctively looking forward with optimism. These rescue dogs adjust quickly to their new homes, bond with their family members, and are grateful for this second chance. They live in the moment trusting that things will go well.

Then there are those who are fearful, with broken spirits and unloved souls. You can see the sadness in their frozen stares and stiff bodies which are unresponsive to touch. These are the dogs who have suffered massive neglect and abuse. I can tell within minutes if a dog has been abused, and I usually know within ten minutes the type of abuse he suffered.

The small cream colored terrier was frozen as if imbedded in the concrete of the kennel floor at the county shelter. Her eyes rolled back to look at us, but she did not stop shaking and hyperventilating laboriously. A small black puppy scurried around her, and they seemed to be a pair of some sort.

They were cellmates in the quarantine area in the back of the shelter, not adoptable to the public, labeled “rescue only”.

Things didn’t go much better with the terrier when Lindi Biggi and I met with her in one of the more pleasant visiting rooms. The terrier continued to shake and pant. I’ve seen dogs tremble before, but the hyperventilating was something I never

before witnessed. Loving All Animals took custody of both dogs, saving them from euthanasia which was scheduled that day. The little black dog, later named Toto, is still in foster care.

We named the cream colored terrier Cassie, and she was bathed, microchipped, and readied for her foster home. However, she continued to tremble and pant as we drove to Palm Springs. It was heartbreaking, and I didn’t know how she would do.

Foster parent Brigit Hartop reports, “Cassie entered my home as a shaking, hyperventilating little mound of curly fur, a little soul who first refused to leave her cage, and once the cage was removed, planted herself beneath a shoe organizer.

She wouldn’t move or stop panting, and her big brown eyes were constantly glazed over...Soon she began to wag her tail ever so slightly, or wink with her eyes, each time I waved to her or blew a kiss.

Later on the second day, she stopped panting and ate some softened food I placed in front of her.” On the third day, Cassie quietly joined Brigit, tiptoeing carefully, and her eyes began to show emotion and even sparkle. Brigit coaxed her up on the bed, and she came alive, running and exploring, finally experiencing the joy of being a dog.

Soon a potential adopter appeared. Ed Marrujo saw her photo, heard her story, and saw the potential in Cassie to become a wonderful canine companion.

way since she first arrived when she spent a lot of time huddled under the table. At first she wouldn’t cross the threshold to enter the house, or go from room to room. She would not go up the stairs. Now she follows me everywhere. She’s really come out of it. It’s all a matter of getting a dog to the point of trust so they realize they are loved. They absolutely know whether someone loves them or not.”

Ed advises someone adopting a new dog to arrange their schedule to spend time with them when they first arrive. Take the dog along when you go out. Cassie (Emma) won’t need to make any more transitions. She’s home at last. Ed says, “She’s the perfect little girl! Tomorrow we’re planning a trip to the dog beach at Huntington.”

Brigit concludes, “She conquered her fears enough to settle comfortably in wherever she would be next. Seeing the photo of her adopter hugging her, and hearing about their upcoming trip

What can you do if you encounter or adopt a dog that seems frightened? Move slowly, be patient, and let the dog move at his pace.

1. DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE DOG, DON’T REACH OUT YOUR HAND, LET HIM COME TO YOU. OFFER A NICE TREAT. One friend won over a scared dog by throwing hotdogs up in the air for him to catch.

2. GET DOWN TO THE DOG’S LEVEL. The dog will be more comfortable if you are closer to his height. Sit on the ground and relax with your side facing the dog.

3. LET HIM SNIFF YOU. This is how dogs get acquainted. Be careful not to make any sudden movements.

4. PROCEED WITH OBEDIENCE TRAINING ONCE THE DOG STARTS TO RESPOND. The pup will learn that you’re in charge and he can trust you while his confidence grows.

Meanwhile, the small terrier with the big brown eyes has become a social butterfly, happily greeting guests and enjoying walks with her new dad. Italians Win at the U.S. Open!

Y

ou know—as your multitasking wine, food & tennis columnist here at CV Weekly, there was no way we’d pass-up commenting on the all-Italian 2015 U.S. Open Women’s Championship held this past weekend, and of course while we’re at it, enjoying some tasty Italian wine.

Not only tennis fans, but sports fans around the country were primed to watch the amazing Serena Williams’ quest to win all four Gram Slam events in one calendar year—only an elite few have ever done so in tennis history.

You’ll of course remember my “interview” with Serena in these pages during the 2015 BNP Paribas Tennis Tournament held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden this past March.

And although she had to “pull out” of that event, even John McEnroe agreed with me that Serena is history’s best women tennis player. And she was taking down all comers around the globe this year; however, her winning momentum was stymied by the unsuspecting and un-seeded 32 year old Italian Roberta Vinci who won the three set semi-final match before a shocked spectator New York crowd.

While on the other side of the draw, Italian Flavia Pennetta, seeded 26th at the tournament, defeated the 2nd seed Ramona Halep to force the first All-Italian final in U.S. Open history. ALLORA!! Things got so wild over in Italy with the sports news that the Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi and his entourage cancelled their government schedule and booked a jet immediately to NYC to be on hand to watch the match and congratulate the inevitable Italian champion at Arthur Ashe Stadium—the largest tennis arena in the world.

Pennetta won the final in two sets, but as one would expect with the Italians, both women were as happy as pizza pie, hugging each other, praising each other and sharing tears of joy in front of the tennis world— something we don’t see enough of in the cold fierce competitive realm of women’s tennis. Complimenti ragazze! Flavia e Roberta—Regole Italia!

Well—no one was letting this festa d’Italia go on without sharing in the celebration of those headed for New York’s lower Manhattan’s Little Italy, to wine and dine and Party! Back home here in the desert, I myself was almost brought to tears when my lovely wife Penny and my son Paolo prepared & presented a home abbondanza of the most delicious Italian dishes one could imagine including a spicy sausage & mushroom Rotini Bolognese, zucchini lasagna, Italian parsley polenta, and the freshest tossed giardino insalata italiano. La vita è buono! Lode a Dio! I scurried to the wine bin and grabbed some lip-smacking vino to match the

glorious meal. For certain, we’ll no doubt spend some autumn time with our annual Chianti article, but at this junction, let’s talk about some other wonderful Italian red for the dinner meal.

Perfect for pairing with classic Italian dishes are two wines described below from the Avignonesi Winery and Vineyards which is located near Montepulciano in southern Tuscany. As with Chianti wine, the reds from this area are also produced from the Sangiovese grape—which is becoming one of the most popular Italian grapes for the American palate. And why not— characteristic flavors of the Sangiovese include: cherries, earth, chocolate, anise, coffee, herbs, leather, plums spices, tabacco, tea, violets, and of course, sanguine notes.

After all, “sangiovese” is latin for “the blood of Jupiter”.

Italy’s oldest DOCG red wine has been a long overlooked Tuscan appellation, but Avignonesi owner Virginie Saverys, originally from Belgium and a fortunate retired lawyer, has brought in an international team and a breath of fresh air to this classic region since fully acquiring the winery in 2009. Virginie’s

passion for organic and natural products drove her to implement 100% organic and biodynamic practices at the winery, which, coupled with a detailed geographical study of Avignonesi’s soils, uncovered the true terroir of the vineyards.

Wanting to focus on revealing the full potential of Montepulciano, Virginie was inspired to craft a beautifully singular Vino Nobile made from 100% Sangiovese where only 70% is required. Virginie who has elevated this wine to a level on par with the more expensive neighboring Brunellos.

The Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2011, at around $25, which received a score of 91 from Wine Spectator, is fresh and elegant, with “An opulent style, featuring black cherry, red fruit, plum, earth and Mediterranean shrubs and sweet spices. Full and complex, offering fine balance and a lingering aftertaste of tobacco, spice, balsamic and peak-mineral (ie. ‘blood’ ) notes.”

The other Avignonesi red we enjoyed, was the Vino Nobile’s little brother—so to speak—the Rosso di Montepulciano, around $18. This wine is quite similar but has less age in the barrel and therefore even more reasonably priced. It was great to have both wines at the table for comparisons.

Medium ruby red in color, the Rosso is

bursting with bright aromas of strawberry, raspberry and pomegranate. Notes of violets and rose petals complement the flavors of cherry, red currant and white pepper. A delicate finish of sage and thyme lingers on the tongue.

The winemaker notes include, “The 2014 was a weird year in Tuscany—as our normal, warm and sunny summer never really came.

This, however, favored our young red wines, which show lots of bright, red fruit and fragrant flavors, which are more difficult to maintain in warmer years. This wine is best served slightly chilled.” Sounds perfect in the desert!—we’ll drink to that!

Men of Action

M

en and women love a guy who can take charge. Someone who isn’t afraid to buck the system to get things done and is willing to take risks to save the day is everyone’s hero. In Ace Atkin’s The Redeemers (G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 384 pages) and Alex Kava’s Silent Creed (G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 336 pages) returning franchise characters continue to make things right.

Third in the Quinn Colson series, The Redeemers finds our hero at the end of his term as Sheriff. Voted out of office, the good ole boy’s corrupt network has put an inside man in Colson’s place. They want change, but it’s not all legal.

When the bad guys start to turn on each other, Colson is forced back into action even without his badge. After a botched break-in during which one of his deputies is shot, the entire small community of Tibbehah County, Mississippi is affected.

Faced with family issues, girlfriend problems and an unsure future, Colson manages to set things back to normal while exposing the corruption and finding the thieves and killers.

Character Ryder Creed returns for a second time in Silent Creed. An Afghanistan veteran and former military K-9 handler, Creed now trains search and rescue dogs in the Florida Panhandle. When he and his dogs are called to assist in finding survivors after a

Turns out the United States government had a secret research facility where the doctors in charge had gone rogue forming new chemical weapon compounds. When Creed and his dogs meet up with FBI agent Maggie O’Dell, they not only uncover bodies but a conspiracy. Creed gets to the bottom of the situation, but the top leads all the way in Washington, D.C. Franchise novel, character series are a lot of fun. It’s great to get to know their problems, history, strengths and flaws. When you understand a protagonist intimately – his world, circle of friends and enemies – the story

leaps ahead and becomes more engaging as the narrative unfolds.

The Redeemers and Silent Creed are novels still early in the series making it easy to jump on board. Readers are able to share the complicated nature of the heroic protagonist as he sets out on new adventures and mysteries. Quinn Colson is in his 30s and Ryder Creed is only 28, so (if the author is so inclined) these characters may have a long future.

There are many similarities in these two books. Both have men who are former military and are haunted by that experience.

Each is set in the South and each has a strong female counter part.

Although this is my first visit into Colson and Creed’s worlds, the author makes it clear who the important relationships are to these complicated men. Creed is in fact a spin-off from author Kava’s “Maggie O’Dell” series. By the way, Alex Kava is a woman with 15 books to her credit.

In The Redeemers, I was not sure who the “redeemers” really were. Maybe it is actually Colson’s sister and father who have returned to the family after leaving addiction behind. I loved the villains in this story. They are bad, colorful and very dangerous.

I especially loved the world of the dogs in Silent Creed. I learned so much about how animals are trained and the nature of search and rescue. The dogs are equally interesting and important characters in the story. I think I’m more curious to see what becomes of

“Grace,” the Jack Russell terrier, “Bolo,” the Ridgeback and the new dog, “Molly,” who was dug out of the mud after being buried alive with her human family who did not survive.

These books have short chapters and that helps make it a quick read. Neither novel shies away from violence or controversy. They are not poetic and they are not pretentious.

The writing is straight forward just like the characters on the page.

I encourage you to find a character franchise to enjoy. As the authors crank out future titles, you will feel more and more a part of the story. Finding characters you love and hate will keep you entertained for years to come.

he Colts got their face caved in by the Buffalo Bills.

The Vikings were embarrassed on Monday Night Football by the Niners.

Teddy Bridgewater was nearly sacked by his owner player.

The Eagles offense was more diesel Volkswagen than Ferrari.

The Steelers defense was more “Shower Curtain” than “Steel Curtain.”

The Seattle Seahawks kicked their own arse and offered the St. Louis Rams an opening weekend win.

All these teams will be in the playoffs.

And all these teams will look back at their Week 1 loss and chuckle.

Because losing badly in Week 1, with expectations so high and hopes irrationally perched beyond reason, is a benefit to teams with enough talent to play in the post season.

The expectations must be dashed in order for a team to realize its weaknesses and improve.

Now a coach has film to refute the selfaggrandizing of a player in their locker room.

Now they have the strength of argument

known as fact to point to if a player puffs out his chest.

Getting embarrassed Week 1, for a team that’s poised to excite a fan base to new heights, is one of the greatest gifts a coach can receive to reign in those lofty, and generally unreasonable, ideas.

And there’s a big difference between the Week 1 demolition of the Colts and Buccanears, or the Raiders and Vikings.

And that is, few of the Week 1 losers have the pieces in place to steer the ship

past the iceberg. Some of them don’t even realize they’re in cold water, let alone see the ice floating around the ship.

But the smart coaches, the Chuck Paganos, the Mike Zimmers, the Chip Kellys and of course Pete Carroll, they are who they are because they utilize every ounce of motivation to see their team succeed and offering their squad an NFL-sized helping of humble pie can go a long way in directing their team to the post season.

Case in point: the New England Patriots.

They are this decade’s most winning franchise. Losing Week 1 in 2014, their first opening weekend loss since 2004, and then getting curb-stomped on national television by the Kansas City Chiefs were some rude awakenings to a franchise that clearly needed fresh motivation.

And another Super Bowl ring.

So while most are looking to cast judgment on a franchise after the showing in Week 1, stick with your picks. It’s a long season and the smart coaches know how to capitalize on bad losses to get great turnarounds.

The Fed and Cheap Money

T

he financial markets are in a tizzy over anticipated interest rate increases. Rate increases are needed in order to begin eliminating the extraordinary monetary easing policies of the Federal Reserve. Since the end of 2008, the Federal Funds rate has been at 0%.

What is the Federal Funds rate? It is the rate the Federal Reserve charges or pays to banks that borrow or deposit money.

This free money means that banks can borrow at 0%, invest in bonds and create nearly risk-free earnings.

With banks buying bonds as an investment, the cost to borrow by the government and corporations is much lower. As a result, government budget deficits are not as high while corporations have cheap money to invest in their businesses. Cheap money is meant to bolster corporate financial health which is meant to cause the creation of more jobs and greater wealth for workers. With this recovery, corporate wages for new jobs has been lower than the wages paid on the jobs lost during the Great Recession. This has bolstered corporate earnings but left the US economy weaker than the typical recovery.

Seven years of 0% money has caused the market to become addicted to cheap money.

Even the threat that this extraordinary financial arrangement might go away has

financial markets very nervous.

Think of the markets like a person addicted to coffee - drinking all of that coffee has left the person jittery and not acting normally.

While the coffee was necessary to wake them up, it’s clear that they have too much caffeine in their system. Caffeine withdrawals will cause headaches and irritability but has to be done.

This is what is happening in the markets.

Businesses with an over-reliance on cheap money will see their results weaken.

How high will rates go?

It is fair to assume that rates will need to go higher than 0.25% over the next few years.

A level in the 2-4% range is a reasonable expectation although there is no way to know when that might happen. Rates could go even higher if inflation takes root in the economy.

If we look at recent history, the federal funds rate reached 5.25% in 2006 as the Federal Reserve tried to cool an overheated housing market. As we all know now, the real fix should have been in removing liar loans and other fraud from the mortgage market.

Before that, the Federal Funds rate had fallen to 1% in 2003 as the Federal Reserve tried to help the economy recover from a

recession caused in large part to the dot-com bubble at the turn of the century (2000). As the Fed tried to combat that stock bubble, the Federal Funds rate hit 6.6%.

In the early 1990’s, the Federal Funds rate fell to 3% from the 7-8% level as the Federal Reserve combatted a recession caused economic disruptions due to increased globalization and a rise in the use of technology.

Thirty-five years ago, this interest rate rose to 20% as the Fed combatted inflation.

How will this impact you?

For savers, you can expect a small increase in the rates you earn from banks although it will hardly be enough to afford you more than a cup of coffee.

Borrowing rates will go up. This will make a homeowner’s monthly payments higher which may cause home values to stagnate.

Auto loans and business loans will also cost a bit more.

People who own bonds will see a decline in the value of their holdings. New bond buyers will see higher returns although a rising interest rate environment most likely means that the decline in principal value will match or exceed the increase in interest in the near term.

CAN YOU GET MY LABOR DAY DUI case DISMISSED?

T

he honest answer is maybe....but the odds are against it. Any lawyer that tells you YES they can dismiss your DUI without examining the facts is lying to you.

The first question on every new client’s mind is what can you do for me? …and what will it cost? If I was a doctor and you had stomach pain, you would not ask me “what is wrong with me and what will it cost” when you first met me and before I examined you.

You would understand a doctor would have to take a history, perform a physical exam, order blood tests, X-Rays, and MRI’s etc. Maybe the doctor would even perform exploratory surgery before telling you what was wrong. If it was Cancer the surgeon might stitch you up and explain there is very little he or she can do to cure you of Cancer.

A DUI is usually not cancer, but with a (1) High Blood Alcohol Reading of .15+; (2) Drugs (Prescriptive or street drugs) or (3) a Traffic Accident, your case becomes more challenging. This means that the results your lawyer can achieve are problematic and the possible sentence will probably involve more jail time.

The Indio Court is much tougher on DUI’s than many other jurisdictions and our local DA’s ask for JAIL time on ALL DUI’s.

This is probably because we have more DUI FATALITIES here in the CV than anywhere else in California...per capita. Even Paul Zellerbach, our former DA’s wife’s DUI, is going to trial on September 29, 2015 because the prosecutor is not showing favoritism to ANY DRIVER. On any criminal case there are different degrees of success. I usually explain to clients on their first appointment, that many years ago I was in the office of famed criminal attorney Robert Shapiro, my best friend at the time, who later became O.J. Simpson’s lawyer. We were planning on going to dinner and discussing cases on which we were working together.

Shapiro got a call from a prospective client and had to stay late to meet with him.

He asked me to sit in the office with him but of course I was to say nothing.

When the client came in Shapiro said “I don’t want to know anything about your case.” He merely asked “what are you looking for?” He then explained that there are different degrees of success. If I go into court and the DA wants a year in custody and I can get you 6 months; that is success.

If they want 6 months of custody and I can get you 2 months; that is success. If they want 30 days and I can get you 10 days; that

is success. If they want 10 days and I can get you a weekend and/or home arrest; that is success.

It is impossible to guesstimate what the success will be on a case when you only hear the client’s side of the story. It is necessary to review the police report for probable cause for the stop, how well you did on the OPTIONAL field sobriety tests and chemical test results for the Blood Alcohol Reading and your criminal record.

Clients often think that because they have a clean driving record or have been a pillar of the community that will factor into their guilt or innocence. That is wrong. It may affect the sentence, but not GUILT or INNOCENCE. Sometimes a prior record will aggravate the sentence and philanthropic work in the community may mitigate the sentence.

However, they have nothing to do with GUILT or INNOCENCE.

Many clients have “Black & White Fever” because they were nervous about the police stopping them. The driver may have innocently said something that was wrong and that may negatively influence the case. Of course failing the attitude test also makes the case more difficult as the DA is more likely to want to punish the driver.

The best advice I can give you is to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. So DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE OR TEXT AND GET A DUI OR ACCIDENT, CALL A TAXI OR UBER……IT IS A LOT CHEAPER THAN CALLING ME!

The Stone Cold facts.. about Stones

ational Child Passenger Safety Week is this week. Make sure the ones you love are safe and secure in the car on every trip reminds Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna.

In 2012, more than 1,100 children ages 14 years and younger died in motor vehicle crashes, and more than 176,000 were injured. But parents and caregivers can make a lifesaving difference.

Always make sure your child passengers are buckled in age- and size-appropriate car seats, booster seats, or seat belts. The safest place for children of any age to ride is properly buckled in the back seat.

Make sure children are properly buckled up in a car seat, booster seat, or seat belt, whichever is appropriate for their age, height, and weight.

Birth up to age 2 - Rear-facing car seat. Age

2 up to at least age 5 - Forward-facing car seat.

Age 5 up until seat belts fit properly - Booster seat. Once children outgrow their forward-facing seat (by reaching the upper height or weight limit of their seat), they should be buckled in a belt positioning booster seat until seat belts fit properly.

Always check the seat’s owner’s manual and/or labels on the seat for weight and height limits!

Install and use car seats and booster seats according to the seat’s owner’s manual or get help installing them from a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician.

Dr. Peter, my brother has had several episodes of passing kidney stones. I heard they are painful, is there a chance I could have them? - Ron, Indio Kidney stones (renal lithiasis) are small masses that can form in the kidney.

Depending on the size of the stones, they will typically leave the body in the urine stream. Symptoms can range from mild lower back pain to severe pain, nausea, vomiting, bloody and painful urination.

Diagnosis is based on a patient’s clinical history, physical exam, urine analysis and imaging studies. Initial treatment may consist of pain medication and possibly other oral medications that will allow one to pass the stone. If unable to pass the stone, procedures such as shock wave therapy or surgery may be needed.

Kidney stones can be hereditary. An individual may have a genetic predisposition to form stones. Other risk factors include; diets high in protein, sodium, or oxalate rich foods (dark green vegetables), obesity, certain medications, and history of frequent urinary tract infections.

Dehydration is the most common cause of kidney stones, thus another very important reason to drink enough water, especially during the summer. Thirst is a poor indicator of hydration status. A good way to monitor if you are well hydrated is by the color of your urine. Drink enough water to keep your urine clear to light yellow.

Dr. K, my friend was just diagnosed with gallstones. If she drinks plenty of water, will she be able to pass them like kidney

Jane, gallstones are very different from kidney stones. Whereas hydration may allow kidney stones to pass in your urine, the path of a gallstone is very different.

Gallstones are hardened forms of digestive fluid in your gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small pear shaped organ located on the right side of your abdomen just below the liver.

Most gallstones are formed from cholesterol. Risk factors for developing gallstones are: • being female • age greater than 60 • obesity • poor diet, high in fat, high in cholesterol, low in fiber • family history • diabetes Gallstones may cause no symptoms, but if they get lodged in the duct leading out of the gallbladder, it may cause right sided abdominal discomfort to severe pain. If the stone does not get dislodged and gets “stuck”, a severe infection can develop called cholecystitis or possibly an infection of the pancreas (pancreatitis).

Treatment for symptomatic gallstones is usually surgery. Small gallstones may pass through the duct and into your small intestine, so it is possible to “pass” a gallstone with a bowel movement, but generally these stones don’t cause symptoms.

Dietary changes can help and I encourage modifications such as limiting high fat and high cholesterol foods. Some medications and supplements may dissolve gallstones, but not immediately, it may take several months.

Instead, we are barraged with nihilistic narratives that wallow in misery and woe. If we want a break from that onslaught, our main other choices are sentimental fantasies and empty-hearted trivia.

That’s the bad news. But here’s the good news: Now is a favorable time for you to seek remedies for this problem. That’s why I’m urging you to hunt down redemptive chronicles that furnish your soul with gritty delight. Find parables and sagas and tales that fire up your creative imagination and embolden your lust for life.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Now is an excellent time to close the gap between the Real You and the image of yourself that you display to the world. I know of two ways to accomplish this. You can tinker with the Real You so that it’s more like the image you display. Or else you can change the image you display so that it is a more accurate rendition of the Real You. Both strategies may be effective. However you go about it, Cancerian, I suggest you make it your goal to shrink the amount of pretending you do.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Born under the sign of Leo, Marcel Duchamp was an influential artist whose early work prefigured surrealism. In 1917, he submitted an unusual piece to a group exhibition in New York. It was a plain old porcelain urinal, but he titled it Fountain, and insisted it was a genuine work of art. In that spirit, I am putting my seal of approval on the messy melodrama you are in the process of managing. Henceforth, this melodrama shall also be known as a work of art, and its title will be “Purification.” (Or would you prefer “Expurgation” or “Redemption”?) If you finish the job with the panache you have at your disposal, it will forevermore qualify as a souljiggling masterpiece.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Some people express pride in gross ways. When you hear their overbearing brags, you know it’s a sign that they are not really confident in themselves. They overdo the vanity because they’re trying to compensate for their feelings of inadequacy. In the coming weeks, I expect you to express a more lovable kind of self-glorification. It won’t be inflated or arrogant, but will instead be measured and reasonable. If you swagger a bit, you will do it with humor and style, not narcissism and superiority. Thank you in advance for your service to humanity. The world needs more of this benign kind of egotism.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): The rooster is your power animal. Be like him. Scrutinize the horizon for the metaphorical dawn that is coming, and be

ready to herald its appearance with a triumphant wake-up call. On the other hand, the rooster is also your affliction animal. Don’t be like him. I would hate for you to imitate the way he handles himself in a fight, which is to keep fussing and squabbling far beyond the point when he should let it all go.

In conclusion, Libra, act like a rooster but also don’t act like a rooster. Give up the protracted struggle so you can devote yourself to the more pertinent task, which is to celebrate the return of the primal heat and light.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Since you seem to enjoy making life so complicated and intense for yourself, you may be glad to learn that the current astrological omens favor that development. My reading of the astrological omens suggests that you’re about to dive deep into rich mysteries that could drive you half-crazy. I suspect that you will be agitated and animated by your encounters with ecstatic torment and difficult bliss. Bon voyage! Have fun! Soon I expect to see miniature violet bonfires gleaming in your bedroom eyes, and unnamable emotions rippling through your unfathomable face, and unprecedented words of wild wisdom spilling from your smart mouth.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): The Adamites were devotees of an ancient Christian sect that practiced sacred nudism. One of their central premises: How could anyone possibly know God while wearing clothes? I am not necessarily recommending that you make their practice a permanent part of your spiritual repertoire, but I think you might find value in it during the coming weeks. Your erotic and transcendent yearnings will be rising to a crescendo at the same time. You will have the chance to explore states where horniness and holiness overlap. Lusty prayers? Reverent sex?

Ecstatic illumination?

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): One of your key themes in the coming weeks is “grace.” I suggest that you cultivate it, seek it out, expect it, and treasure it. To prepare for this fun work, study all of the meanings of “grace” below. At least two of them, and possibly all, should and can be an active part of your life. 1) Elegance or beauty of form, movement, or proportion; seemingly effortless charm or fluidity. 2) Favor or goodwill; a disposition to be generous or helpful. 3) Mercy, forgiveness, charity. 4) A temporary exemption or immunity; a reprieve. 5) A sense of fitness or propriety. 6) A prayer of blessing or thanks said before a meal. 7) An unmerited divine gift offered out of love.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Be good, but not necessarily well-behaved. Be extra exuberant and free, but not irresponsible. Be lavish and ardent and even rowdy, but not decadent. Why? What’s the occasion? Well, you have more-or-less finished paying off one of your karmic debts. You have conquered or at least outwitted a twist from your past that had been sapping your mojo. As a reward for doing your duty with such diligence, you have earned a respite from some of the more boring aspects of reality. And so now you have a mandate to gather up the intelligent pleasure you missed when you were acting like a beast of burden.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “I am the least difficult of men. All I want is boundless love.”

That’s the mantra that Frank O’Hara intoned in his poem “Meditations in an Emergency,” and now I’m inviting you to adopt a modified version of it. Here’s how I would change it for your use in the coming months: “I am the least difficult of passion artists.

All I want is to give and receive boundless, healthy, interesting love.” To be frank, I don’t think O’Hara’s simple and innocent declaration will work for you. You really do need to add my recommended nuances in order to ripen your soul’s code and be aligned with cosmic rhythms.

Revisiting Networking 101

L

ike most entrepreneurs, I am always happy to pass on a referral. Many small business owners gain a portion of their business by word of mouth. Recently I referred a solopreneur to someone in need of a particular service. I did not know the person I was referring, but felt confident because I received the information from one of my trusted networking contacts. As a heads-up and to introduce myself, I gave the individual a call. She thanked me for the referral, dismissing it as a fait accompli.

I hung up rather perplexed. Networking and referrals are not one directional. The situation I presented was an opportunity for her to not only bid on a job, had she put forth more effort, she could have gained so much more.

In her book, “Nonstop Networking: How to Improve Your Life, Luck and Career,” Andrea R. Nierenberg explains that “networking is the process of developing and maintaining quality relationships that are mutually beneficial.”

Simply put, networking is about building relationships, not about getting something from someone else. How could my interaction with the vendor have ended on a different note? For example, rather than resting on her laurels, the business owner I contacted could have spent a few moments telling me about her services. She could have invited me to check out her website

and read any testimonials written by people who benefitted from hiring her. Then as a “yang” to her “ying” she could have switched gears and inquired about my business.

Any student of Networking 101 knows creating connections and nurturing relationships ends up benefiting both parties over time.

Whether you are in receipt of a business referral or a viable lead for your job search, thinking of the activity as a slam-dunk situation is a mistake.

It is more akin to a dance involving partnership.

Stated differently, think: reciprocity. Invest time in others.

In the course of accepting a referral, initiate two actions. One, sincerely thank the person for their time and the lead. Tell them you will touch base after you have made contact to let them know of the outcome. Next, follow up by asking if there is anything you can do to assist your benefactor.

Take it one step further by putting a thank you in writing. People enjoy receiving appreciation both audibly and visually. Crafting a short email takes only a moment. Be sincere and caring in all your networking opportunities and your business will grow. You can bank on it!

CHOOSE YOUR BATTLES WISELY

H

ow is it that we find ourselves entangled in battles with others?

Why do we allow others to immerse us in to their web of misery? I do not have the exact answers to the direct questions above.

These questions are personal and you need to ask yourself if the battle is worth your time.

Battles are distractions. Most are a waste of time. Generally the person taunting you has nothing better to do with their time. They attempt to invoke a rise out of you. Often we take the bait. When we do, the instigator wins. Then another questions arises. Why would you allow someone to gain so much power over you and hijack your precious time?

If you were to accept every battle that came your way you would be exhausted.

Perhaps you are feeling defeated in certain areas of your life. Ponder if you are taking on too much of other people’s tainted issues.

You may not know you are fighting battles, because you are so inclined putting on your boxing gloves.

We are meant to be challenged and fight battles. However, when it monopolizes your time, energy, or consumes your thoughts… guess what? You have already lost the fight.

Just think... if you chose your battles wisely you may have more time on your hands. You may have more energy to exercise. You may have more time for your family. You may have more clarity on the job. Do not squander your time on people who are attempting to drag you down for their own gratification. You

may think this a harsh statement. The reality is, people hurt other people because they are hurting. They love to fight battles for pure self-edification.

Of course, we will have to take on some battles. How do you decipher which one to fight and what to let go? Often this will depend on life experience. If something of familiarity crosses you path you may decide to pass and move forward. Naturally, new experiences will present themselves. A few questions to ask yourself prior to taking something on with another person: Are there any rewards?

Is it worth engaging in such a battle? Is the fight furthering me toward a goal? Am I fighting the battle to prove a point? Or, are you seeking revenge because they hurt you?

Are you trying to prove yourself to another person? Truthfully, these are distractions and a waste of your time. You are worth more than whatever kind of dysfunction someone is trying to serve up to you.

An intentional instigator is hurting, lonely, and desperate for attention. He/she will do whatever it takes to render you miserable. The applicable adage, “Misery loves company.”

You have a choice to engage in juvenile endeavors or not. Save your time and energy for the battles that matter. Life is short. Don’t give your time away to a person who gains pleasure from your misfortune. Take control, move on, and surround yourself with positive influences.
