“We’ve been going out in the Coachella Valley speaking to the community and going to various functions. Many of the residents were surprised to know that a big percentage of the families we serve come from the Coachella Valley. We help and support the families at the trauma center in Loma Linda, as they get the help they need. We provide the temporary housing so the families can stay there for support,” stated Executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House

“We just try to make it as pleasant as possible for the families. We have a family support services team. With every family that gets checked into the Ronald McDonald House, family support services help them with whatever resources they need or if they just need to talk. They also do therapy and fun clubs for kids. Whatever that core family support unit is, we are accommodating them at the house. We try to make it as comfortable as possible for the families going through such a trying time,” said Hooper.

Arballo: “I have fronted some cover bands. I was in a Deftones cover band from high school up until I was around 25. I was the singer and played guitar. It’s pretty nuts because I kind of transform when I’m up there playing and I really let the music take over which is why I get so tired at the end of a show.”

Arballo continues: “We are releasing three songs on an EP entitled, “Swallow the Sun.” Those three songs are older songs that were written before I ever met Sean so he came in and used his talents to really help me round them out and make them tighter and cleaner. 2019, vocalist and guitar player/ bassist, Miguel Arballo and drummer/ keyboardist, Sean McCune (who is also known as rapper, Aeiou) met as backup musicians for popular, local vocalist, Krystofer Do and soon began to realize that their chemistry was something that couldn’t be denied. Both Arballo and McCune have a wide variety of musical interests and were itching to create something uniquely theirs. That itch was very much intensified during the pandemic which also gave them the time to get together and do something about it. Once in high school, so many former attendees come back to volunteer at the retreats. We have many teenage girls/ young woman playing crucial roles in the foundation, from helping with social media to helping orchestrate our monthly virtual mentorship classes,” explained Rae.

Rae’s parents also recently retired to the Coachella Valley, so they have become very involved with volunteering. Bianca is usually in the desert twice a month, not only taking care of foundation work that requires her presence, but also visiting family and friends.

In addition to the work with underprivileged middle school children, the Bianca Rae Foundation also holds annual adoption events at the Gardens on El Paseo, bringing together

“I realized very early on that given my career as a public figure, I had a platform and I felt compelled to use that in a meaningful way. Ever since I was a little girl I’ve always wanted to impact change, whether that was stepping up in the classroom or running for class president. Then, as a journalist, I realized I had a voice, and I wanted to be a voice for the voiceless—which I believe are children and animals,” stated Rae.

Rae moved to Palm Springs straight out of college when she was 22. Shortly after, she started volunteering at an animal shelter and met her rescue dog Jack, which ultimately catapulted her into the world of philanthropy.

Currently in its eighth year, the Bianca Rae Foundation will hold its annual Rae of Hope retreat in collaboration with Desert Sands Unified Expanded Learning Opportunity Program. The retreat will take place on Oct. 1 at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa in IndianBiancaWells.Rae Foundation’s Annual Rae of Hope retreat is for middle school children in the Coachella Valley. Over the past seven years, more than 2,500 children have been positively impacted by attending the Rae of Hope retreat. Children learn about antibullying, leadership, elevating their selfesteem, social media safety, and much more.

For the 8th Annual Rae of Hope retreat, there will be 400 middle school children in attendance from most every desert city attending this one-day conference. At the retreat, kids rotate through breakout groups learning about self-esteem building, antibullying, overcoming life obstacles, and other crucial life skills. Each breakout group is led by a person of influence that young people intrinsically look up to, whether that is a college athlete, an older high school role model, or local celebrities. The testimonials and success stories of the way past retreats have impacted children are very powerful. There are also some fun surprises sprinkled in throughout the day as well, from each child receiving gifts such as soccer balls to a big ice cream social at the end of the day.

“I absolutely love children, so getting to know and create relationships with my ‘Rae of Hope girls,’ as I call them, has been the biggest blessing. So many kids connect with

This is a dream-come-true for Rae, who has gotten to interview everyone from Congressmen to celebrities— and has gotten to work on television in her dream market of Los Angeles. Although she no longer lives in the Coachella Valley, Rae still considers it to be a paradise that she frequently visits to connect with family and friends.

“The desert is such a special place to me.

Nearly 3,000 children have attended the Rae of Hope retreat since it first started, in large part to one of the biggest supporters and sponsors, G&M Oil Company. During the pandemic, when large in-person events could not be organized, the Bianca Rae Foundation started offering virtual mentorship classes for teens.“Those classes were supposed to just be temporary amid the pandemic, but we had such positive feedback and demand that we now offer these mentorship classes every month. Topics range from managing back-toschool anxiety to how to interview for a job to how to apply for college scholarships. I’m so proud that we now offer resources to young people year-round,” revealed Rae.

At the very first Rae of Hope retreat, Rae recalls many kids asking if they were having a retreat again the following year. She stood on the stage and promised them the Bianca Rae Foundation will have a retreat every single year. Rae’s hope and goal is for the Bianca Rae Foundation to be able to provide this opportunity to children for as long as possible.

MUSIC

By the early ‘80s they were popping up on albums by T-Bone Burnett and The Plimsouls, and playing all the usual L.A. clubs. The cognoscenti noticed, and within a couple of years, they signed a record deal with Warner Brothers. Their debut, Two Stories, arrived in 1987, awash in gossamer harmonies, deft arrangements and jangly instrumentation. Produced in part by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers guitarist, Mike Campbell, his participation raised their profiles considerably. Although the brothers’ sharp compositions dominated the album, it also included unreleased songs by Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty. Four years later they recorded their self-titled, sophomore effort. A watershed record, it felt more Rootsy and intimate and contained the heartfelt ballad “Can’t Cry Hard Enough,” written by David and their pal, Marvin Etzioni. A bona fide hit, it climbed to #42 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Their third album, Harmony Hotel was released in 1993. A quietly confident collection of 10 songs, it included “Don’t Look Now,” a heartbreaking commentary on the AIDS crisis, the tender “Where Would I Be” and the rollicking “Wonderful Blues.”

Of course, for this fan, I want there to be more. New songs, live recordings or more unreleased music, I’m not picky (well, maybe no 12” dance remixes). But even if that never happens, at least there’s this gift. Or, as their pal, Louisiana native Victoria Williams might characterize it, this lagniappe. That’s a French-Cajun term that means “a little something extra.” Thanks to Marvin Etzioni, The Williams Brothers have given the world a little something extra, and for now, that will suffice.

CONSIDERTHIS

paring it down to a bare-bones, backwoods lament. Shivery pedal steel lattices strummy guitars, woebegone bass and a sturdy beat. Lyrics paint a grim portrait of life under the big top, that reflects the gritty existence of a road-weary musician; “My makeup is dry and it cracks ‘round my chin, I’m drowning my sorrows in whisky and gin, the lion tamer’s whip doesn’t crack anymore, the lions, they won’t bite, the tigers won’t roar/The fortune teller lies dead on the floor, nobody needs fortunes told anymore, The trainer of insects is crouched on his knees, and frantically looking for runaway fleas.” The brothers’ soaring and ethereal blend keeps the song from becoming too maudlin. (And for the record, someone needs to recalibrate a klutch of Kinks kuts, adding a kountry-tinge. What? Okay, I’ll kwit).

By “Unanswered Prayers,” all the equivocation has receded. Liquid guitar arpeggios line up with keening pedal steel, thrumming bass and a barely-there beat. Rather than set the world on fire, the lyrics kind of wallow in the mire, before looking to a higher power; “Night after night I was lonely, thinking ‘bout you only, why, baby why, did you hurt me so bad, I ain’t never, I ain’t never been so sad/Thank God for unanswered prayers, Thank God for being there, cause if they all came true, I would still be with you,”

know about you, but for me, there is nothing better than listening to the (seeming) effortless and achingly pure sound of familial harmonies. I find it positively thrilling. It’s not just music you hear, it’s music you feel. As a kid, I was drawn to The Osmonds, The Everly Brothers The Beach Boys and The Andrew Sisters. As I got older, it’s what I loved about The Roches, Sweethearts Of The Rodeo and The Williams Brothers.Identical twins Andrew and David Williams grew up in a showbiz family. Their dad Don, along with brothers Robert, Dick and Andy, began performing as The Williams Brothers in the late ‘30s. The quartet performed with both Bing Crosby and Kay Thompson before Andy embarked on a solo career. Signature songs like “The Days Of Wine And Roses,” “Moon River” and “Can’t Get Used To Losing You,” skyrocketed him to fame in the ‘50s and early ‘60s. He hosted his own weekly TV variety show from 1962 to 1971.

The best songs here ricochet from the sacred to the profane, with a brief, but bittersweet detour in-between. First up is Iris DeMent’s glorious “Let The Mystery Be.” Ripsnortin’ guitar riffs ride roughshod over sly pedal steel, agile bass lines and a simpatico shuffle rhythm. Clear-eyed lyrics attempt to define the temporal world and the hereafter; Some say they’re goin’ to a place called Glory and I ain’t saying it ain’t a fact, but I’ve heard that I’m on the road to purgatory and I don’t like the sound of that, well, I believe in love and I live my life accordingly, I think I’ll just let the mystery be.”

The record closes with a tender take of Buffy Sainte-Marie’s “The Piney Wood Hills.” The brothers’ harmonic alchemy is front and center, bookended by cascading acoustic riffs, melancholy pedal steel, dolorous bass and a waltzing ¾ beat. The ache is palpable as the song’s dusty travelers yearn to return home; “I’m a rambler and a rover, and a wanderer it seems, I’ve traveled all over, chasing after my dreams, but a dream should come true and a heart should be filled, and a life should be lived in the Piney Wood Hills.” It’s a sweetly apropos finish, to a wonderfully organic and timeless record.

As kids, Andrew and David had their minds blown by The Beatles. They began harmonizing at an early age and appeared, along with the rest of the Williams clan, on Uncle Andy’s annual TV Christmas specials. As soon as adolescence hit, they began receiving fan mail. Soon enough, they were signed to a record label, marketed as teen idols and were feted in august publications like 16, Tiger Beat and Spec (don’t roll your eyes I religiously read all three in the early ‘70s). An appearance on The Partridge Family cemented their burgeoning fame. They didn’t really have that much say in what they were recording, but they happily went along for the ride. When their popularity waned, they returned to their normal lives and began creating their own music.

On the title track, hiccoughing harmonies, darting pedal steel, jangly guitars, and quarter tone bass lines are tethered to a finger-poppin’ beat. An intriguing cri de Coeur, it manages to reference a Paul Simon deep cut, “How The Heart Approaches What It Yearns,” as the lyrics articulate the feelings of ambivalence that accompany a break-up; “What am I supposed to do, with all of these pictures of you? What am I supposed to do, I got memories to burn/I’m gonna throw it all in the fire, watch the flames go higher and higher, it’s a beautiful sight, I wish you were here tonight.”

September 22 to September 28, 2022 www.coachellavalleyweekly.com 8

Since this was something of a busman’s holiday for Andrew and David, the album only features one of their own original compositions; “She’s Got That Look In Her Eyes.” The track is in line with the record’s themes of sin, salvation and sorrow. Equal parts Torch and Twang, hushed harmonies feather atop mournful pedal steel, ringing guitars, wily bass and a tick-tock beat. Lyrics limn the sting of betrayal; “She’s got that look in her eyes, it’s not hard to tell, I know she’s biding her time to say farewell, she’s got that look in her eye, I know she’s saying goodbye, she could never lie too well.”

“Death Of A Clown” is their take on the classic Kinks jeremiad. The original had a wheezy, Music Hall lilt. But Andrew, David and Marvin deconstruct the arrangement,

BY ELENI P. AUSTIN

The album opens with a crackling version of “Tears Only Run One Way,” One of two songs they tackle by sardonic alt.country Rocker, Robbie Fulks. Andrew and David’s close harmonies perfectly coalesce atop weepy pedal steel, a rippling backbeat, descending, slap-back bass lines and plucky acoustic guitar. Lachrymose lyrics sing the Blues on this sad-sack saga of love gone wrong; “Our love ran wild, it took us higher than the sky, man it was a real ride, we kissed, we fought, yeah, we ran cold and hot, but there’s no two ways about the way I feel right now.” Despite the romantic sturm und drang, the blithe arrangement and fluttery pedal steel adds a layer of Grand ole Opry verisimilitude.Marvin’soriginal songs are afforded the most bandwidth, beginning with “Cryin’ And Lyin’.” Chugging acoustic guitars partner with swoony pedal steel, bucolic bass and a clanky, propulsive beat on this twangy Texas Two-Step. Essentially, they can’t go on together with suspicious minds; “Don’t tell me that your hair is messed up for no reason, even your mascara is leavin’ what am I to believe, you’re so close but out of reach.” Piquant pedal steel hugs the melody’s hairpin curves, mirroring the rollercoaster of emotions.Thedefiant “You Can’t Hurt Me” is powered by chunka-chunka rhythm guitar riffs, bristling bass lines, insolent pedal steel notes and a see-saw beat. Andrew and David’s symbiotic harmonies wrap around lyrics that close the door on a failing romance; “I won’t take the blame, for the pain you’re in, I’m not a faceless name, I’m not a shot of gin.” Prickly pedal steel is matched by slinky acoustic licks on the beak,

Finally, their second Robbie Fulks cover, “She Took A Lot Of Pills (And Died)” lands somewhere between Loretta Lynn’s “Your Squaw Is On The Warpath” and Nick Lowe’s “Marie Provost.” Barbed pedal steel, shimmery guitar and brittle bass connect with a thumping beat. The lyrics offers up an evocative narrative worthy of novelist Nathanael West; “At 20 years old, she was as rich as she could be, and a world-famed Hollywood star.” Of course, fame is fleeting; “While the traffic crawled by in the street outside, she was sitting in her kitchenette, listening to the scuttle of the rats in the wall, and staring at her TV set/She once might have been too proud to be found in a hovel on the lower East Side, but nothing in the world seemed to matter much now, so she took a lot pills and died.”

Memories To Burn echoes antecedents like The Everly Brothers and The Louvin Brothers. The lean and unfussy arrangements and instrumentation adroitly allow the spotlight to shine on Andrew and David’s fraternal blend.

By this time the brothers had opened for everyone from Roy Orbison and Suzanne Vega, to the BoDeans, Victoria Williams (no relation), and even Linda Ronstadt. Indie film director Allison Anders had tapped them to play a brotherly singing act in her Brill Building/Beach Boys roman a’ clef, Grace

Of My Heart. But Andrew and David, both ready for new challenges, opted to go their separate ways professionally. Andrew has gone on to become an in-demand record producer and David focused on his passion for architecture, interior and landscape design.Around

adding just a soupcon of Everlyesque flavor.

the same time the brothers had parted ways with their record label and began filming Grace Of My Heart, their pal, Marvin Etzioni suggested they make a Country-flavored album. It was a very spontaneous affair, they cobbled together a set-list of songs that spoke to them. Marvin played bass and produced, he also enlisted Greg Leisz on pedal steel and Don Heffington on drums. Andrew pushed the “record” button. Since the guys were exploring divergent career paths, the tapes were filed away. Marvin is probably best known as bass player for Lone Justice, but he’s also a protean singer-songwriter who launched a solo career in the early ‘90s, as well as a multi-instrumentalist and producer. In the early days of the pandemic, he had signed a digital distribution deal with Six Degrees for his label, Regional Records. That prompted him to call Andrew and find out what happened to those live to 2-track recordings. They were still on a shelf. Once Marvin received the files via email, he went through and edited. Andrew mixed and engineered, and then it was mastered by Sean Magee at Abbey Road. The result is Memories To Burn, a 10-song set recorded over 25 years ago that is finally seeing the light of day.

Star Christopher Lee, pushed Hammer Studios to produce his author friend Dennis Wheatley’s occult novel. Lee adds: “There were censorship problems because Wheatley’s books didn’t deal with the fantasy but the reality of Black Magic.” The actor Lee is famous for his warning against dabbling in the dark arts. As you might imagine, the extended special effects sequences, multiple exterior locations and a satanic orgy with dozens of writhing extras all created more than the usual number of production problems. English actor Leon Greene’s American proved unconvincing and he was “revoiced.” This film is considered Hammer’s last great horror film. Scream Factory. Blu-ray.

the flame-coloured vineyards, savour gourmet recipes—paired with the greatest wines, and ponder lake- river-side strolls.

As one of the first certified biodynamic vineyards in California, Benziger Family Vineyards is a slice of heaven where nature is in perfect harmony. At this time of year, their rolling vineyards pop with outstanding colors.

We know what to expect when we see a Sauvignon Blanc that is crystal clear but for a touch of green; or a mellow yellow Chardonnay; or a brooding purple Petite Sirah. It’s always a treat to be served a glass of wine whose color is so appealing, moving, and artistically shaded, that you can continue to view the glass and nose the aroma without tasting the wine for minutes.Soback to the colors of fall. The Burgundians say it with gusto: l’automne est la meilleure saison pour découvrir la Bourgogne! autumn is the best season to discover Burgundy. C’est vrai—it’s true, is the perfect time to get lost in

- John Keats

To the wine world, the autumn season brings sweater weather for those picking grapes in the early cold mornings, the celebration of the harvest, and of course, the spectacular displays of foliage. And it seems there is an innate feeling of melancholy in the air as the circle of life continues within us and without us; with perhaps that nice glass of wine that helps us to accept and to console our souls.Wine guru Mark Fairchild has put it succinctly: “It’s been said that red, white, pink, yellow, or orange color is one of the most fundamental descriptors of wine. It is one of the attributes of wine that viticulturists and winemakers dedicate their constant care, attention, patience, and nurturing to, in both growing grapes and making wine.

THE FALL COLORS OF WINE THE VINO VOICE

Before we go on, let’s make sure that everyone is aboard with “orange wine”. Last year, just before Halloween, we did an article on orange wine with the title, “Orange is the New Noir”, where we describe an orange wine, and we recommended a new bottle on the block from Maison Noir, an Oregon wine company, called “New Noir”.

However, for those wishing to limit their travel—well, according to the Sonoma Valley Visitor Guide, “the best part of fall in the Sonoma Valley is the colorful landscape, painting the valley in spectacular hues of yellow, red, and orange. And it’s not just the trees that are wonderful—it’s also the vine! After the grape harvest, the vines release all of their colors. Pile on changing tree foliage and the natural beauty of seasonal produce in the farm stands, you’ll realize that fall in Sonoma Valley is pure magic. For the ultimate ride through the fall foliage, start in Sonoma and drive north, stopping along the way at the following spots, and make a day of it.”I’m all in on that description, so allow me to remember back to some great spots to visit up there—and no doubt, it’s time for that harvest road-trip!Bartholomew Estate lies on one of the earliest properties planted to vineyards, originally by a native man named Vivano and later, the famous Agoston Harazsthy of Buena Vista fame. Today, it is still home to some of Sonoma Valley’s most picturesque vineyards, a beautiful tasting room, an old estate and a gorgeous park with a 3-mile hiking loop that takes you up and over the property through a beautiful forest, opening to magnificent views of the valley below. It’s one of Sonoma Valley’s best-keptStretchingsecrets.17 miles from south to north, Highway 12 sprawls along the valley floor like a zipper, melding in one unforgettable view after the next, from Sonoma to Santa Rosa. Dotted with some of the valley’s most notable vineyards from wineries like B.R. Cohn, Kunde, Kenwood Vineyards, St. Francis Winery, and Landmark Vineyards, among others, there’s enough color to create a new kind of rainbow.

In the column we wrote: “Really quick—an “orange wine” is a made by fermenting white grapes in contact with the skins, hence why they are also called skin-contact wines. Usually when making white wine, the grapes are pressed to extract the juice from the fruit, leaving the skins and seeds behind. The white juice is collected into vats and then fermented.

“Even after harvest, there is much that can be done, and is done, to coax wine colors from the grapes into their full potential and expression in the wine. Aging also has its clear, and often desirable, impact on color such that the ultimate experience of the drinker taps into the haunting, brilliant, thrilling, subtle, and ancient history of the beverage.”

Orange wine is also made from white wine grapes, but instead of pressing the juice out and away from the skins and seeds, the juice is fermented with them to give them their pigment and some tannin. The fermenting juice is then left alone anywhere from a few days to a year. The resulting color, of course, is orange. Some folks prefer to call it skin-contact wine; they won’t call it orange wine—but the color is pretty much orange.

Jack London Historical State Park is not only the former home of the famous author of novels like Call of the Wild, White Fang, and Valley of the Moon, but it is also Jack London’s fantasy farm. It is here that he experimented with different trees and plants, agricultural methods and, of course, organic viticulture. Bon Voyage! Cheers!

Since we taste wine with our eyes first off, all is affected: it is well known that visual appearance—and color in particular can have a strong influence on smell, which, in turn, has a defining impact on taste.

The Desert Hot Springs Animal Care and Control shelter opened in 2015, upgrading the same building used many years ago as a shelter. Their City Council realized it was more cost effective to operate their own animal control and shelter than to continue contracting with Riverside County. Animal advocates welcomed the move, which meant keeping the city’s strays closer to home in addition to reducing the huge intakes at the county’s Thousand Palms facility.

Indio Court is not worth as much as most LA Courts, where jury verdict are higher.

The trick to being able to weather a down economic period with investments is to build a strategy that works for the long-term. This doesn’t mean that you hold an investment no matter its performance. You need to regularly review any investment you hold to assess whether the original idea behind the investments still applies.

1

During rough periods in the stock market, focus on quality companies with strong cashflows, defensible market positions and best-in-class management teams. If you do these things, you will still see your stock portfolio go up and down with the market –the hope is that your positions go down less than the market as a whole and recover more quickly when better economic conditions

forecasted.Theimportant thing to remember is that the market overvalues assets during strong economic times and undervalues during weak economic periods. Over time, a valuation somewhere between the highs and the lows will be found.

MegaUber Company (MUC) had earnings of $1 billion last year. Because growth is strong and earnings are expanding, MUC ended the year with a 24x Price-to-Earnings (P/E) multiple. This tells us that MUC is worth $24 billion. If we assume that MUC has 240 million shares of stock outstanding, the value per share is $100.

times are good, stocks are valued at higher multiples of earnings. When times are slow or the economy is weakening, that multiple goes down. To understand what this could mean to your 401k or investment portfolio, let’s consider a hypothetical example.

impacted your daily activities, your case will be stronger. If your treating doctor is comfortable testifying and makes a compelling witness, this also will boost the value of your claim.

. WAS THE DEFENDANT “NEGLIGENT”?

8. IS THE LAW ON YOUR SIDE?

Maybe not! In addition to lower earnings, interest rates are going up which increases the cost of borrowing. Economic conditions are causing consumers to spend more on things like food, gas and shelter. This leaves

less money to buy products like those sold by MUC.We also must consider the wealth effect. When 401k and home values are strong, people tend to spend more. When those assets go down in value, even a financially well-to-do consumer will cut back.

In the current year, MUC has been surprised by higher raw material, labor, and shipping costs. Inflation is running at 10% causing sales to decline. Between lower sales and higher expenses, earnings are expected to be 20% lower this year than last year. Because sales are slowing and earnings are contracting, MUC no longer warrants a 24x P/E multiple. As MUC declines are roughly on par with other stocks in its business sector, MUC has a current value of 17x the P/E multiple. With current earnings of $800 million and a 17x P/E multiple, the company is now valued at $13.6 billion – quite a bit less than $24 billion last year. With 240 million shares outstanding, the share price is now $56.67 or 43% lower than last year.

INVESTING DURING GOOD OR BAD TIMES

9. HOW MUCH TIME HAS PASSED SINCE YOU WERE INJURED?

Will a jury like you? Will jurors empathize with your situation? Conversely, will jurors dislike the defendant? If you are dealing with a “bad” defendant - e.g., a drunk driver or an angry driver with a criminal record - the settlement value of your case rises. Some jurors will not like a witness with tats over his/her body, especially the neck and face. If, on the other hand, you are dealing with a “good” defendant - a father who was momentarily distracted by his child in the backseat-then your case is more challenging.

2. WHAT ARE YOUR “DAMAGES”?

When times are good, take a little money and put it to the side. During rough periods in the market, keep some cash around so that you can buy stocks as prices decline. Down periods are a good time to trade up in to

7. WHERE MIGHT A LAWSUIT BE FILED?

10. WILL THE CLIENT BE HELPFUL, COOPERATIVE AND DO WHAT S/HE PROMISES?

If your lawyer can point to a case with facts similar to yours, which was decided favorably, this enhances the settlement value of your claim.

In general, the more time that has passed, the less inclined jurors will be to award significant damages. This is particularly true if your injuries have largely healed, and your daily life essentially has returned to normal by the time of the trial. In California a lawsuit must be filed before 2 years has passed from the accident.

4. HOW WILL JURORS REACT TO YOU AND THE DEFENDANT?

Higher borrowing costs and slower demand cause MUC earnings to fall by another $100 million to $700 million. This lowered earnings level causes the P/E multiple to fall to 15x – a historic norm for MUC’s P/E multiple. This means that the company is worth $10.5 billion. Divide that by the 240 million shares outstanding and you get a new price of $43.75. The stock has now fallen by 56% over two years.

In legal terms, your “damages” represent the potential dollar-value of your case. Your damages include your medical bills and other out-of-pocket expenses; your lost wages and income; and compensation for your pain and suffering. The defendant’s negligence may be clear, but if you were not harmed, then you have no case that a lawyer would want.

When

higher quality investments. This means that you would sell a struggling stock and buy another that should recover more quickly when the economy turns around.

5. WILL A JURY BELIEVE YOUR WITNESSES?

Negligence is a failure to use the degree of care that a reasonable person would in a similar situation. If there is some question as to whether the defendant’s unreasonably careless behavior caused your injuries, this doubt weakens your case. Likewise, if an argument can be made that your own negligence contributed to your injuries, this too will decrease the value of your case.

3. IS THE DEFENDANT ABLE TO PAY A JUDGMENT?

Just as some insurance carriers are more conservative than others, jurors in some counties and cities are more conservative than others. For instance, a case in the Indio Court is not worth as much as the Santa Monica Court, where jury verdict are higher. Most likely it is because the people who are covered by that court, are wealthier coming from Beverly Hills, Westwood, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades and Malibu. Fat and protein are your friends on keto. While fat is a cornerstone of the keto diet, protein will help keep your blood sugar stable and keep you full. If you’re experiencing cravings, it may be that you’re skimping on one of these two essential macronutrients. When in doubt, especially in the beginning, make sure to have some high-fat and highprotein snacks around if cravings hit.

I am an amateur at this, so let me play meteorologist for one minute. The Great Basin includes most of Nevada, half of Utah, and sections of Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon, and California. Sometimes, cold air from the north becomes trapped in the Great Basin, caught between the Rockies and the Sierras/ Southern California coastal range. As CNAP notes, this cold air mass is characterized by unusually high pressure near the land surface. When that pressure gets high enough to exceed the pressure along the California coast, the Santa Ana winds develop. As those winds move from higher to lower elevations, they become dramatically warmer and dryer. And as they move through narrow mountain passes, they pick up lots of speed.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Tips for making the most of the next three weeks: 1. Be proud as you teeter charismatically on the fence. Relish the power that comes from being in between. 2. Act as vividly congenial and staunchly beautiful as you dare. 3. Experiment with making artful arrangements of pretty much everything you are part of. 4. Flatter others sincerely. Use praise as one of your secret powers. 5. Cultivate an openminded skepticism that blends discernment and curiosity. 6. Plot and scheme in behalf of harmony, but never kiss ass.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In 1946, medical professionals in the UK established the Common Cold Unit. Its goal was to discover practical treatments for the familiar viral infection known as the cold. Over the next 43 years, until it was shut down, the agency produced just one useful innovation: zinc gluconate lozenges. This treatment reduces the severity and length of a cold if taken within 24 hours of onset. So the results of all that research were modest, but they were also much better than nothing. During the coming weeks, you may experience comparable phenomena, Taurus: less spectacular outcomes than you might wish, but still very worthwhile.

- Would it be helpful to hire a coach/ trainer to keep you motivated and moving safely?-Would you like to take a class such as yoga, Pilates, or an aerobics class in a group atmosphere?-Wouldyou enjoy a cycling class where you can zone out and jam out to your favorite tunes?

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Tips to get the most out of the next three weeks: 1. Use your imagination to make everything seem fascinating and wonderful. 2. When you give advice to others, be sure to listen to it yourself. 3. Move away from having a rigid conception of yourself and move toward having a fluid fantasy about yourself. 4. Be the first to laugh at and correct your own mistakes. (It’ll give you the credibility to make even better mistakes in the future.) 5. Inspire other people to love being themselves and not want to be like you.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “Love your mistakes and foibles,” Virgo astrologer William Sebrans advises his fellow Virgos. “They aren’t going away. And it’s your calling in life—some would say a superpower—to home in on them and finesse them. Why? Because you may be able to fix them or at least improve them with panache—for your benefit and the welfare of those you love.” While this counsel is always relevant for you, dear Virgo, it will be especially so in the coming weeks.

- deeper sleep

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): In a poem to a lover, Pablo Neruda wrote, “At night I dream that you and I are two plants that grew together, roots entwined.” I suspect you Pisceans could have similar deepening and interweaving experiences sometime soon—not only with a lover but with any treasured person or animal you long to be even closer to than you already are. Now is a time to seek more robust and resilient intimacy.

It is also important to broaden our scope when it comes to physical activity. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator, biking to work instead of driving or parking a little further away from the store to allow for a short walk are simple, easy ways to do MORE mood boosting physical activity throughout your day.

Homework: Fantasize about an adventure you would love to treat yourself to in the spring of 2023.

It is important to find physical activities and/or exercise that YOU personally find appealing and enjoy doing. Level of enjoyment is crucial to success and sticking with it for the long haul!

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Poet Mary Oliver wrote, “There is within each of us a self that is neither a child, nor a servant of the hours. It is a third self, occasional in some of us, tyrant in others. This self is out of love with the ordinary; it is out of love with time. It has a hunger for eternity.” During the coming weeks, Scorpio, I will be cheering for the ascendancy of that self in you. More than usual, you need to commune with fantastic truths and transcendent joys. To be in maximum alignment with the good fortune that life has prepared for you, you must give your loving attention to the highest and noblest visions of your personal destiny that you can imagine.

- mood lifting

Besides a stronger body, you’ll notice these mental health impacts with regular exercise:

Even better, those minutes don’t have to be strung together all at once, either. Breaking it down into smaller increments of time, however they may fit into your day, your life and your schedule, produces the same results.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You are an extra authentic Aquarius if people say that you get yourself into the weirdest, most interesting trouble they’ve ever seen. You are an ultragenuine Aquarius if people follow the twists and pivots of your life as they would a soap opera. And I suspect you will fulfill these potentials to the max in the coming weeks. The upcoming chapter of your life story might be as entertaining as any you have had in years. Luckily, imminent events are also likely to bring you soulful lessons that make you wiser and wilder. I’m excited to see what happens!

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Even when your courage has a touch of foolhardiness, even when your quest for adventure makes you a bit reckless, you can be resourceful enough to avoid dicey consequences. Maybe more than any other sign of the zodiac, you periodically outfox karma. But in the coming weeks, I will nevertheless counsel you not to barge into situations where rash boldness might lead to wrong moves. Please do not flirt with escapades that could turn into chancy gambles. At least for the foreseeable future, I hope you will be prudent and cagey in your quest for interesting and educational fun.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Here’s a scenario that could be both an invigorating metaphor and a literal event. Put on rollerblades. Get out onto a long flat surface. Build up a comfortable speed. Fill your lungs with the elixir of life. Praise the sun and the wind. Sing your favorite songs. Swing your arms all the way forward and all the way back. Forward: power. Backward: power. Glide and coast and flow with sheer joy. Cruise along with confidence in the instinctive skill of your beautiful body. Evaporate thoughts. Free yourself of every concern and every idea. Keep rambling until you feel spacious and vast.

the physical health benefits of exercise are often discussed, the link between exercise and mental health is often overlooked. Exercise does naturally what scientists in the pharmaceutical world have been creating for decades. In fact, mental health professionals often prescribe exercise as part of the treatment for mental illness.

Again, the key to sticking to any exercise program or routine is finding something you enjoy doing and will keep you motivated to

The best part is you don’t need to commit an overwhelming amount of time to it in order to reap all the benefits. In fact, just 30 minutes of moderate exercise 5x a week is all it takes to enjoy both the physical as well as the mental and emotional advantages of a regular exercise routine.

Keep that statistic in mind when you just don’t feel like working out. It can help things like depression and anxiety as well as stuff such as ADHD, PTSD and trauma. Exercising is an effective way to look after your mental, physical and social wellbeing.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): I’m getting a psychic vision of you cuddled up in your warm bed, surrounded by stuffed animals and wrapped in soft, thick blankets with images of bunnies and dolphins on them. Your headphones are on, and the songs pouring into your cozy awareness are silky smooth tonics that rouse sweet memories of all the times you felt most wanted and most at home in the world. I think I see a cup of hot chocolate on your bedstand, too, and your favorite dessert. Got all that, fellow Cancerian? In the coming days and nights, I suggest you enjoy an abundance of experiences akin to what I’ve described here.

- stress reduction

- Setting your alarm a few minutes earlier so you can stretch or do morning yoga

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Capricorn poet William Stafford wrote, “Saying things you do not have to say weakens your talk. Hearing things you do not need to hear dulls your hearing.” Those ideas are always true, of course, but I think it’s especially crucial that you heed them in the coming weeks. In my oracular opinion, you need to build your personal power right now. An important way to do that is by being discriminating about what you take in and put out. For best results, speak your truths as often and as clearly as possible. And do all you can to avoid exposing yourself to trivial and delusional “truths” that are really just opinions or misinformation.

- improved attention span

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): For 15 years, Leo cartoonist Gary Larson created The Far Side, a hilarious comic strip featuring intelligent talking animals. It was syndicated in more than 1,900 newspapers. But like all of us, he has had failures, too. In one of his books, Larson describes the most disappointing event in his life. He was eating a meal in the same dining area as a famous cartoonist he admired, Charles Addams, creator of The Addams Family. Larson felt a strong urge to go over and introduce himself to Addams. But he was too shy and tongue-tied to do so. Don’t be like Larson in the coming weeks, dear Leo. Reach out and connect with receptive people you’d love to communicate with. Make the first move in contacting someone who could be important to you in the future. Be bold in seeking new links and affiliations. Always be respectful, of course.

- reduction in risk for dementia

This one might be a given, but it’s worth repeating! Exercise releases chemicals in the brain, like endorphins and serotonin, that can physically improve your mood. Bonus, these chemicals are released within just ten minutes of physical activity.

You can start with something simple, such as:

Enter Bill Owens, owner of Buffalo Bill’s Brewery in Hayward, California. Owens noticed the use of pumpkin beer in the journals of George Washington and dove in headfirst by ordering seeds and growing pumpkins for his first pilot batches. They were harvested, roasted and then added to a variation of Bill’s Amber only to discover that pumpkin is… relativelyAmericanflavorless.consumers, having become

accustomed to the spicing of pumpkin pie as the benchmark for pumpkin flavor would expect much more. After all, pumpkin pie is really quite bland until cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and allspice are added. Bill and most brewers concentrated more on the spices and many have abandoned the use of actual pumpkin in the recipe of most pumpkin-driven beers. As mentioned earlier, pumpkin beer is often derided for being premature to the market and is brewed well in advance of the seasonal pumpkinPumpkinharvest.beers flourished well into the 20-teens until sales began to grow softer… bringing us to today’s revved-up versions. American brewers are anything but bashful in terms of innovation and the lowly pumpkin would not escape the brewers wild desire to innovate instead of replicate. As a result, in 2011 The Bruery in Placentia, CA introduced Autumn Maple, a pumpkin-style beer brewed with 17 lbs. of yams per barrel and then spiced it with cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup. It was bold, spicy, and weighed in with a hefty 10% alcohol content and also launched a thousand pumpkinesque imitations.

scorching temperatures forecast for the upcoming Labor Day Weekend, you are completely forgiven if you haven’t given a single fleeting thought to the upcoming onslaught of autumn beer releases. As time (and the seasons) march on, Pumpkin and Oktoberfest beers will soon be gracing the taps and shelves of the Coachella Valley regardless of whether the mercury agrees. We will tackle Pumpkin Beers this week, with the focus on Oktoberfest quickly following. Love them or hate them, in my estimation the pumpkin beer category is among the most maligned among the myriad of seasonal beer styles. I’m not referencing the annual debate over what constitutes “too early” for its release, but the lack of knowledge regarding the origins of pumpkin beer and how it has evolved into what seekers of the style enjoy today. So, let’s take a stroll through the pumpkin patch to review where the beery tribute to the gourd began, how it arrived here, and I’ll get you a few solidApplerecommendations.Piemaybe considered the iconic American dessert, but Johnny Appleseed didn’t begin to sow his magic until at least 1817 and those trees took time to finally bear fruit. To the early colonists, pumpkins were magic as there seemed to be an incessant supply of the things. Many in the Northeast are familiar with the “accidental” pumpkin patch as they grow like weeds; wandering, weaving, and seemingly out of control. As a result, colonists used them in all manner; pies, mashes, bread…and beer. Pumpkins were abundant while cereal grains such as barley, wheat, and oats were mostly destined to become food for people and livestock.Theoriginal pumpkin beers were pretty clean providing they had enough time to

Adam Avery at Avery Brewing in Boulder, CO. wondered what would happen if he took a monstrous pumpkin porter, plump full of spicy gourdiness, and aged it in fine freshly emptied rum barrels. The result was Rumkin, sporting a 16.9% ABV with suggestions of dark oak and candied molasses. In an effort to outdo himself, in 2014 he aged the same recipe in bourbon barrels, yielding a massive 18% ABV and a slight name change to Pump[KY]n

Of the hundreds of pumpkin beers released every year, I do manage to have a favorite of the style…Shipyard Brewing (est. 1994) located in Portland, Maine. Alan Pugsley’s Ringwood brewing system produces a lot of off-centered beers, and Shipyard makes two versions. The first is Pumpkinhead Ale, a 4.5% ABV wheat ale which is delightfully aromatic and features a subtler spice flavor, often served rimmed with sugar and cinnamon. It’s big brother, Smashed Pumpkin, is my clear favorite of the season. With a name right out of a Gallagher comedy routine, Smashed Pumpkin is anything but subtle. It’s hugely over spiced, much too sweet (but not cloying), and way too thin; like a pumpkin pie in a glass. It’s unique, novel, and that’s exactly how I like my seasonal beers.

Most people who do not use cannabis believe everyone smokes and gets high. The modes of administration are the same as any pharmaceutical: inhalation, oral ingestion, sublingual, buccal, topical, transdermal, and suppositories (rectal & vaginal). Recent studies have highlighted the challenges associated with cannabinoids’ formulation like low ability to dissolve in water, how quickly it is converted in the digestive system, how much of the dose is actually utilized in the body, and erratic activity of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or cannabidiol (CBD) in the body over time, how is it absorbed, distributed in the body, localized in the tissues, and excreted. – all of which contribute to the limited efficacy of cannabinoids.Unfortunately, smoking is the most inefficient form of adult use and not the most appropriate for medicinal use. Let us look at why. When smoking a joint at high temperatures much of the terpenes and 60% of the cannabinoids get evaporated. However, it is the most immediate response thus it is used medicinally for breakthrough pain, nausea, or anxiety. The effect can last one to two hours. A cleaner more efficient way to inhale is a vape pen (30% is lost) or through a volcano (54%) is gained, similar to using an Albuterol (ProAir) as a bronchodilator. time progressed, the emigration of British, German and Czech brewers (who would eschew the gourd) along with adequate supplies of cereal grain (thanks to quantum leaps in American agriculture) led to the demise of the pumpkin as a source of sugar in American beer. Its memory would fade until revived by American craft brewers late in the 20th Century.

There are individual genetic differences that result in the dose taking 2-3 hours. This is because THC is turned into a metabolite by the liver that is stronger than THC. (11-Hydroxy-Δ9 tetrahydrocannabinol). For this very reason, tinctures are the recommended mode of administration for individuals using marijuana for the first time.

The sublingual mode is using tinctures or sprays. Onset is quick in 15 minutes, similar to when a heart patient takes a nitroglycerin tablet for chest pain. Duration lasts 4-6 hours. Cannabis is lipophilic meaning it needs fat to metabolize. So, if no relief in an hour, take a fat snack like cheese, or avocado. If you do not like the taste, take it on a cracker. Tinctures are the best way to determine sensitivity to THC or CBD. Start low (2mgs) and build up slowly (10mgs) and space out the dosing.
