fter many months of pandemic paranoia and quarantining at home, many are looking for a bit of magic in their everyday lives. Look no further than Marvyn’s Magic Theater in La Quinta for world-class entertainment, comfortable atmosphere, and extraordinary talent. After being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the theater’s grand re-opening took place on September 30 and had a wonderful opening weekend with many old friends, customers, and family in attendance. Entertainment Director and Producer of all shows, Jeff Hobson, views the reopening of Marvyn’s Magic Theater as a huge sigh of relief. Like all other

theaters, Marvyn’s Magic Theater had to abruptly shut down without much notice. The theater started to distribute gift certificates, and then refunds totaling over 80,000 dollars. After doing very well for the first five months of business, the sudden closure made the business disappear like magic. “I hope that, this time around, we get to stay open if enough people support the theater. We are not a 501C. If we sell tickets, our theater stays open. Pretty simple. We also find that a majority of our customers stay in the Coachella Valley year-round, so I plan to keep the theater open during the summer,” said Hobson. Marvyn’s Magic Theater safety

protocols include limiting the showroom attendance with extra cleanings and sanitizing. The theater website states that the policy is “masks optional and vaccinations are highly recommended for entry”. If and when any state mandates may arise, the theater is set to comply. There are currently deals available on the Marvyn’s Magic Theater website, such as two-for-one tickets on select shows. Another feature is the purchase of a 10 percent discount, 20-ticket Magic Pass to receive a voucher code to secure tickets for regular performances Thursday through Saturday throughout the entire Maryvn’s Magic Theater 2021-2022 season from September 30, 2021 until May 31, 2022. All ticket processing fees are waived, which is a total of 190 dollars in savings. Once a Magic Pass is purchased, guests will receive an email with the voucher code. When a show is selected, guests can pick out seats. Then, at the checkout page, guests apply the voucher code for each ticket. Guests do that for each ticket they want and the price will be subtracted from the order. Attendees are encouraged to check the website frequently as specials change monthly. “We have Special Event Wednesdays where, once per month, we plan on having unique shows that aren’t necessarily magic-related. For example, October 13 is our special event, Hypnotic Mayhem show. It’s a great hypnosis-comedy show where you can See-The-Show or Be-The-Show! We also will have the famous comedian/ ventriloquist Jay Johnson from TV Sitcom Soap fame. He’s hilarious with his buddy Bob. We also have our theater available for private buy-outs and personal special events,” revealed Hobson. For the 2021-22 season, Marvyn’s Magic Theater has installed large-screen monitors on both sides of the lobby so the pre-show entertainment can be seen more easily. The price of tickets has remained the same as they were before the pandemic. continue to page 5

MARVYN’S MAGIC THEATRE

Hobson’s favorite addition is the booking of John Carney for Maryvn’s Lounge House Magician, as John is Hobson’s personal favorite magician in the world. In addition to acting as host for Marvyn’s Magic Theater, Hobson has been featured on NBC’s The Illusionists primetime special, HBO, Showtime’s Comedy Club Network, Fox Family’s Masters of Illusion, NBC’s World’s Greatest Magic, as well as being the star of Thames Television’s Magic Comedy Strip (a 16week television series in England and the top-rated U.K.’s iTV with The Illusionists – Live from Broadway). Hobson has experienced many memorable moments at Marvyn’s Magic Theater, including wedding proposals as an accidental part of the show and having long-lost relatives meet after many years. In some life-changing instances, a few female guests who lost their husbands have cried after shows saying that it is the

LOCAL BUSINESS

first time they have been laughing and happy in months or years. “There’s been an explosion of magic on TV over the past 10 years with America’s Got Talent winners. Plus, the internet has seen magic as the most views of any variety art in the world. Magic gives people a sense of wonder that most of us adults lost as a child. Today, so many of us are jaded to the world. There’s nothing we don’t know any more due to most every answer being online. But experiencing the art of magic in a live, intimate setting such as Maryvn’s Magic Theater, it can make us all feel like a kid again. Marvyn’s is a 21-and-over establishment so everyone present can experience those special childlike feelings again, not to mention laughing your butt off at the same time!” stated Hobson. As the years progressed, the inspired church group held Toy Drives and Back to School Outreaches in the Cities of Coachella and Desert Hot Springs in addition to Indio. They sent items to Thermal, Salton Sea, Brawley, El Centro and Tijuana by donating items to other Ministries in those areas. When the pandemic hit in 2020, they began a weekly food distribution to help feed those in need, along with a monthly clothing drive. They have been partnering with FIND to better serve the community. Since the inception of the food distribution program, they have had the honor of helping to feed over 51,000 people. Since beginning these Community Outreaches in 2011, they have given away over $200,000 in goods and have served over 18,000 children. They hope to continue serving our Valley by expanding their reach to further surrounding Cities. What started as a small project once a year has grown to include multiple projects every year that reach thousands of people. CONSIDER THIS

F

or better or worse, when Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac in 1975, they turned a moderately successful British Blues Rock band into legit superstars. Purists may grumble and grouse, arguing the virtues of songs like “The Green Manalishi” and “Oh Well” (and, yeah, those are killer songs). But if band continued down that path, they would probably be regarded now as a footnote on par with also-rans like Blues Incorporated, Savoy Brown and Steam Hammer So, it came as quite a shock in 2018 when Fleetwood Mac ousted Lindsey Buckingham just weeks before a World tour was to commence. The band recruited ex-Tom Petty Heartbreaker guitarist, Mike Campbell and Crowded House leader Neil Finn to cover guitar and vocals. Apparently, it took two guys to fill Lindsey’s very talented shoes. Born in late 1949, Lindsey Adams Buckingham was born in Palo Alto, California and grew up in near-by Atherton, the youngest of three brothers. As a kid he began picking out tunes on his Mickey Mouse toy guitar. Pretty soon he was playing along with his brother Jeff’s extensive 45 collection. Recognizing his talent, his parents bought him a $35. Harmony guitar. Despite never taking guitar lessons or learning how to read music, Lindsey was a quick study. By age 13 he became interested in Folk music, adopting an energetic guitar style that mimicked the banjo he heard on Kingston Trio records. A few years later he was playing bass and singing in his high school band, the Psychedelically inclined Fritz (originally known as The Fritz Rabyne Memorial Band). Before he finished school, he invited his friend Stevie Nicks to join the band as an additional vocalist. By the time Fritz had called it quits in 1971, he and Stevie became romantically involved. Securing a record deal, and now known as Buckingham Nicks, the couple released a self-titled debut in 1973 that (despite its slightly provocative cover that featured both of them topless and included some side-boob from Stevie), promptly sank like a stone. Having moved to Los Angeles to make the record, the pair were barely making ends me. Concurrently, after myriad line-up changes, Fleetwood Mac had recently ditched gloomy London for the smoggy sunshine of L.A. In the process of looking for a studio and producer to make their next album, Mick Fleetwood was at the Sound City facility when producer Keith Olson cued up the Buckingham Nicks album to demonstrate the studio’s capabilities. The band’s co-founder/drummer was intrigued. Bob Welch was the most recent Mac guitarist to leave the fold and Mick, along with bassist John McVie and his wife, vocalist and keyboard player Christine were searching for a new guitarist. They invited him to join, but Lindsey would only accept if his girlfriend Stevie was included. They were a package deal. In 1975, the newly minted quintet released their second self-titled album. Lindsey, Christine and Stevie had each

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM (REPRISE RECORDS) contributed original songs and the record began a slow and steady ascent up the charts. Three singles hit the Top 20 and the finally the album reached #1 only to be eclipsed by Peter Frampton’s live juggernaut, Frampton Comes Alive. Two years later their sound truly coalesced with Rumours. By this time the McVie’s had filed for divorce, Mick’s marriage was in trouble and Lindsey and Stevie were in the midst of an acrimonious split. But the emotional mishegoss only fueled their creativity. Much like his hero, Beach Boys mastermind, Brian Wilson, Lindsey emerged as the band’s sonic architect, equal parts adventurous and meticulous. Something a sun-kissed Soap Opera, Rumours fused scathing sentiments like “Loving you isn’t the right thing to do… packing up, shacking up is all you want to do” to ridiculously hook-filled melodies. The album spawned four hit singles and perched at the top of the charts until it was knocked off by the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. All told, the album has sold 40 million copies and is the second biggest selling album in history. In the ensuing years the Mac continued to make amazing records like 1979’s expansive and experimental Tusk, and 1982’s crowd-pleaser, Mirage. Their multiplatinum success allowed each member to indulge themselves chemically and creatively. In 1981 Lindsey, Mick and Stevie all released solo albums. Lindsey’s Law and Order was a quirky masterpiece, but only Stevie’s Belladonna came close to matching Rumours massive sales. Christine quietly released a solo album in 1984. (John’s lone solo album arrived in the early ‘90s). By 1987, Fleetwood Mac felt more like a business and less like a band. The Tango In The Night album arrived and predictably zoomed up the charts. But (like most mid ‘80s music), their sound had become slick and polished. The endearing rough edges that defined their ‘70s material had been scrubbed clean. Although he had committed to a tour, Lindsey quit before the band hit the road. Feeling creatively stifled, he complained that he was expected to create commercial hits, rather than follow his own esoteric impulses. The band soldiered on without him, but Stevie jumped ship by 1991. In 1993, Fleetwood Mac reconvened to play Bill Clinton’s Presidential Inauguration (the “Rumours” era hit, “Don’t Stop” had become a Clinton campaign anthem). But it was another four years before they truly reunited. They recorded The Dance in front of an invitation-only audience. The live, unpluggyish effort reaffirmed the band’s superstar status and they quickly returned to the road. But Christine’s fear of flying prompted her to retire following the band’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. As a four-piece Fleetwood Mac released Say You Will in 2003 to mixed reviews and respectable sales. Touring sporadically, Linsey and Stevie continued to release wellreceived solo albums. Once she conquered her Aerophobia, Christine was welcomed

back into the fold in 2014. Both Lindsey and Christine had written a clutch of new songs, but Stevie was reluctant to return to what she characterized a combative environment in the studio. The chemistry between Lindsey and Christie was fresh and undeniable. So, the pair pooled their resources and released an eponymous duo album in 2017 and briefly toured behind it. At the start of 2018, just as the five-piece was gearing up for a world tour, following a performance at the annual MusicCares benefit, management phoned Lindsey and he was summarily fired from the band. Accounts vary as to cause, the story that gets the most traction is that Stevie issued a “him or me” ultimatum. Lindsey filed suit that October for breach of fiduciary duty and breach of oral contract among other damages. It was settled in December. Three months later he underwent emergency heart surgery. The procedure caused some temporary vocal damage, but he had already recorded his seventh solo album. Of course, Covid 19 derailed his original 2020 plans to release the album and tour and he hunkered down with his wife and kids. Perhaps there was too much togetherness, earlier this June his Kristen Buckingham filed for divorce. In recent interviews Lindsey says he is hoping they reconcile. In between Fleetwood Mac duties, Lindsey has managed to carve out a rewarding solo career. From his 1981 debut, through 1984’s ambitious Go Insane, 1992’s more conventional Out Of The Cradle, 2006’s dazzling Under The Skin, 2008’s intricate Gift Of Screws, 2011’s slightly ramshackle Seeds We Sow, plus an assortment of live efforts. Now he has finally released his seventh long-player, succinctly self-titled Lindsey Buckingham. The record kicks into gear with the primal musical therapy of “Scream.” Strummy acoustic guitar is augmented by dissonant bells that randomly ping and ting, glassy electric guitars, gamboling bass and a heartbreak beat. Lindsey’s constricted tenor is enhanced by his own triple-tiered harmonies on the chorus. Vaguely priapic lyrics chart a carnal course from zero to sixty; “Over and over, red, red rover, til the sun starts setting in the West/Nighttime’s the the I love so much, lost in the language of your touch, just like you’re waking from a dream, oh I love it when you scream.” Both “Swan Song” and “Blind Love” detail the workaday woes and enervating

ennui that characterizes a long-term romantic relationship Although the songs were written a few of years ago, in light of the Buckinghams’ recent split and possible reconciliation, they take on an added resonance. On the former, tightly coiled guitar notes are quickly supplanted by angular bass and jittery drum loops. Rippling Spanish guitar darts through the mix, as lyrics navigate the hairpin turns of love that’s coasting on fumes; “It’s another fight as the queen dims the light, it’s far too late at any rate, it’s up to fate/It always ends up black and white, but is it right to keep me waiting, is it right to make me hold out so long, is it right to keep me waiting in the shadow of our swan song?” Lindsey rips not one, but two pithy guitar solos, the first is buzzy and bee-stung, the second careens through the dense arrangement with a Khachaturian kick. The latter finds Lindsey at his most Beach Boy beatific. Chiming guitars, timekeeper bass and whooshy keys are tethered to a clip-clop gait. Lindsey’s unadorned vocals ride roughshod on the verse, stacked harmonies breathily float on the chorus. From the opening couplet, lyrics listlessly catalogue the telltale signs of marital monotony; “You feel love but you never give it to me, you steal love when you’re looking right through me…” By the chorus, it’s cards on the table time; “Blind love, show me your soul, if you’ve been lying to me, I’ve got to know…if you’ve been playing a part, I’ve got to understand.” Actually, the album’s unofficial leitmotif seems to revolve around rocky relationships, connubial and otherwise. The best tracks on the album circle around a recurring theme of potential loss. Take the winsome “Blue Light.” The melody is powered by trademark banjo-riffic Buckingham guitar riffs, see-saw bass and a galumphing thump. Yin-Yang lyrics like “Still crying about joy, still laughing about pain…still dreaming about hope, still hoping about dreams, cause nothing is quite what it seems,” acknowledge that sometimes resilience and perseverance can transcend tsuris. So, no matter what “we can never, never, never, never, never give in.” Kaleidoscopic guitar notes shadow the chorus giving the arrangement a buoyant fizz that belies the song’s somber subject. “On The Wrong Side” weds plinky keys, winsome guitars and wiry bass lines to a pogo-ing, percussive beat. Channeling the bitter kiss-off of “Go Your Own Way,” the lyrics obliquely address his years as the creative linchpin of Fleetwood Mac; “Every now and then I fall, every now and then I rise, when my back’s against the wall, still sometimes I compromise.” A crush of layered vocals on the chorus adds a delirious ebullience that almost feels incongruous. Especially when juxtaposed with the stinging guitar solo he unleashes on the break. Toward the end of the track, he acridly quips “We were young and now

we’re old, who can tell me which is worse,” before closing out the song with a final skronky, squally guitar solo that sputters into the ether. “Power Down,” much like “Swan Song” is anchored by skittering drum loops along with braided guitars and angular bass. Wiry and kinetic, it’s an aural Pop Art collage (with the emphasis on Art), that recalls the experimental “Tusk” era, (which displayed Lindsey’s growing affinity for bands like Devo and Talking Heads, much to his bandmates’ chagrin). Lyrics mine the fertile territory of domestic discord; “Far, far in between these wounds I mend, you said your beginning was my end,” and his mien splits the difference between defiant and selfpitying, But by the bridge he has soothed his bruised ego, urging us to “remember or we might forget.” Finally, the painterly “I Don’t Mind” is equally avant-garde. Hushed vocals and fleet, filigreed acoustic fretwork partners with Dada-esque bass and percolating percussion. Cascading electric licks pingpong through the mix. Hiccup-y harmonies jigsaw beneath Lindsey’s whispery tenor. Lithe and elastic electric notes zig-zag through the arrangement, the lyrics offering this philosophical nugget to ponder; “Yesterday, today, tomorrow end before they start, where there’s joy there must be sorrow, never far apart.” Other interesting tracks include the shimmery homeowner Blues of “Santa Rosa” and a courtly take on “Time.” The

song was originally a hit in 1966 for the Pozo-Seco Singers. A favorite going back to his high school days, Lindsey barely tinkers with the source material, front-loading the song with celestial harmonies and breezy guitars. The album winds down with the slightly somber “Dancing.” Thisclose vocals breathily annunciate lyrics that equate the intersection of art and commerce with creative carnage. It also feels like a sideways swipe at the monolithic Mac; “Emptiness goes where supply meets demand, business and murder go hand in hand, dancing, dancing.” It’s a curious end to a pretty great record. Lindsey played everything on here, electric and acoustic guitars, guitar synthesizer, bass, synthesized bass, keyboards, percussion, drum programming and the latticed vocals. The whole thing was recorded in his home studio, and the results are seamless. In the Fleetwood Mac universe, Stevie Nicks is the certified superstar, but Lindsey is forever the quixotic and cranky boy wonder. On his solo stuff he can tilt at windmills, he can follow his muse, dirty up the pretty and, to paraphrase Brian and the Beach Boys, stay true to his school. That compulsion has earned him a loyal and passionate fan base. Diplomacy and genius don’t always go hand-in-hand. He may never regain his spot within the Mac hierarchy. But if he stays on his solo path and continues to make captivating and complex music like this, he should be okay.

he Irresistible force paradox asks, “what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?” Without getting into the physics of Newton’s second law of motion, it’s safe to say that in the 46-year timespan between the Stonewall Riots on June 28, 1969 (The birth of the modern LGBTQ civil rights movement,) and the June 26, 2015 Supreme Court decision that allowed marriage equality, (Obergefell v. Hodges,) the LGBTQ community has been an unstoppable force and it has overcome many seemingly immovable objects. The acceptance of the heterosexual norm in American culture, as well as many others, has served as a way to present homosexuals as deviants, less stable and more of a societaloutcast. For fear of losing jobs, family, housing and often violence, members of the LGBTQ community have hidden, suppressed or flat out denied their innate natures in order to comply with societal expectations. Oppression and fear-based hatred has always plagued the community in many ways through homophobia, sexism, misogyny, transphobia, accusations of mortal sin and

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com

threats of eternal damnation. Is it any wonder that historically, members of the LGBTQ community have been somewhat reluctant to ‘come out’ of the proverbial closet. In her 1980 essay, "Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence" renowned poet Adrianne Rich, argues that heterosexuality is not "natural" or intrinsic in human instincts, but an institution imposed upon many cultures and societies that render women in a subordinate situation. It was not written to widen divisions, but to encourage heterosexual feminists to examine heterosexuality as a political institution, which disempowers women and to change it. Many more people may fall on a spectrum of sexual identity if not socialized to believe that heterosexuality was the norm and all else a deviant from that. Rich, indicates that the need to ‘come out’ is in defiance of the pressure to adhere to ‘straight’ expectations which are cast upon us at birth. She explores the oppression of compulsory heterosexuality. In 1988, Psychologist Robert Eichberg and Lesbian Activist Jean O’Leary founded National Coming Out Day, (NCOD.) They decided on October 11th because it was the anniversary date of the 1987 march on Washington where over 500,000 people had marched for Lesbian/Gay civil rights. Stemming from the idea that ‘the personal is political,’ (a political slogan used in the 1960’s in the feminist community expressing a common belief that the personal experiences of women are rooted in their political situation and gender inequality.) ‘Coming out of the closet,’ placed emphasis was on basic activism that was very personal, but had significant political ramifications. thought being that homophobia thrives in an atmosphere of silence and ignorance and that the more people who knew someone who was gay, the more they may be willing to accept homosexuality. Knowledge can be a powerful tool for those who are not afraid to open their minds and a book. National Coming Out Day was started in West Hollywood, CA and received participation from eighteen states in the first year and twenty-one states in the second year. By 1990 it was being recognized in all 50 states and seven other countries. It has become a symbolic day for celebrating the LGBTQ community. There are thousands of stories telling the tragedies that have befallen members of the LGBTQ communities, women who have been raped in a twisted and psychotic effort to ‘make them straight.’ Gay men and transsexuals who have been beaten to death. Families who have outright rejected their LGBTQ family members. Lives lost, jobs lost, housing lost, religion lost, faith in humanity lost. The LGBT Community has become much more inclusive in the years since NCOD was established. They have achieved many rights

THE FIRST GAY BAR IN PALM SPRINGS TO BE CELEBRATED AS 2021 COMMUNITY GRAND MARSHAL OF PALM SPRINGS PRIDE PARADE

reater Palm Springs Pride announced today the Community Grand Marshal for the annual Greater Palm Springs Pride Parade is the pioneering Arenas Road business Streetbar. The Pride organization recognizes a Community Grand Marshal, to symbolically lead the parade, for having a positive impact in the region. Streetbar is honored as a community steward for its work supporting organizations and fundraising efforts that span 30 years. In August 1991, Streetbar was the first Gay bar in Palm Springs and is now the longest-running LGBTQ bar in the Coachella Valley. When Dick Haskamp and Hank Morgan, founders of Streetbar, opened on Arenas Road, they paved the way for the Arenas Road business district. Arenas Road is recognized as the gay neighborhood and hub of LGBTQ-friendly nightlife and shopping in Palm Springs. Streetbar has a longstanding tradition of bringing the community together with unique events. Since its opening, the staff and customers of Streetbar have raised funds for local charities, including the Aids Assistance Program (AAP), The LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert (The Center), and the Palm Springs Animal Shelter. For many years, the organizations benefited from Streetbar's two major fundraising events, the Holiday Wreath Auction and the ArtWall Project. Dick Haskamp passed away on March 4, 2018, however his vision of charity work as a core value

of Streetbar continues. Ron deHarte, president of Greater Palm Springs Pride, said, "As Streetbar celebrates their 30th Anniversary, Palm Springs is fortunate that Dick's legacy of philanthropy and community support lives on. I think he would be beaming with pride along with a visible teardrop or two, seeing Streetbar today. We are delighted to honor Streetbar for embracing and supporting the local community." David Farnsworth, current co-owner of Streetbar, reminisced, "Dick always said it was the best staff, a good drink and a friendly atmosphere that garnered Streetbar the loyal customers and its great success." Farnsworth added, "Even after a difficult and treacherous past year, what remains clear is the remarkable people that stand behind that bar every day providing a friendly smile and excellent service, as well as the longtime behindthe-scenes support staff that clean, maintain the bar, and keep things moving that have made it possible for Streetbar to prevail and persevere for 30 years." The Pride Parade on Sunday, November 7, will celebrate Streetbar as Community Grand Marshal. The parade is a free community event and steps off on N. Palm Canyon Drive at E. Tachevah Drive at 10:00 a.m. ABOUT GREATER PALM SPRINGS PRIDE Greater Palm Springs Pride (www.pspride.org) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community enhancement

and overcome mountains of obstacles. They have gained protections in employment, housing, the military, adoption and marriage, the biggest challenge remaining is overcoming the bias, hatred and violence that so many still face. The 2020 FBI Crime report shows that hate crimes based on sexual orientation represent 16.7% of hate crimes, the third largest category after race and religion. Reporting hate crimes to the FBI is not mandatory and therefor most likely seriously under reported. A steady increase in hate crimes was indicated between 2016 and 2020. No doubt due to the tolerance and acceptance of homophobia in the rightwing communities. The LGBTQ community is estimated to comprise 4.5 percent of the U.S. population, yet according to the FBI’s report, they comprise 18.5 percent of hate crime victims. So, when asked why we still need a National Coming Out Day it is apparent that LGBTQ members are still in need of a higher level of acceptance in American culture. Robert Eichberg’s belief remains relevant even in this modern age. Most people think they don't know anyone gay or lesbian, and in fact, everybody does. It is imperative that we come out and let people know who we are and disabuse them of their fears and stereotypes. – Robert Eichberg, in 1993 Dee Jae Cox is a playwright, director and producer. o see or not to see, that is the question. It’s why most movie fans read reviews from trusted critics. Whether to venture out to experience a film with vaccinated (?) strangers, or stay at home in the safety and comfort of your private space in a tradition theatrical venue, or at home on your 4K big screen device? Far be it from me to advice or recommend stepping out from your comfort zone, there’s little doubt the really big screen theatrical event is superior. But I have to admit enjoying an anticipated movie in the comfort of your home theater can be pretty satisfying and likely safer. Based on conversations with fellow movie buffs, the three most anticipated films are: DUNE “Only those who are able to conquer their fear will survive.” Dennis Villeneuve’s ambitious adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic and massive novel is a first of all visual treat that sometimes gets bogged down in sober sequences that can be taxing. TENNIS PARADISE & WINE AT BNP PARIBAS

T

he entire tennis world—well, at least those here in the Coachella Valley, is now welcoming back the “5th Grand Slam in the Desert” aka BNP Paribas Open Tennis Tournament. Since being canceled in 2020 and again early this year, this famed Indian Wells tournament has wonderfully returned for its twoweek play—and the world class professional tennis players are now playing as we speak/write/read! The big talk, of course, is the appearance here of the two young women, Emma Raducanu and Leyla Fernandez, who appeared at the U.S. Open tennis championships last month and absolutely won our hearts as they won all of their matches to get to the tournament final—with Raducanu winning in a full three set match. Terrific play! And most of the top 50 women players in the world will be competing as well, including Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek and Karolina Pliskova, all who have been tearing up the courts with their winning strokes. As to the men’s draw, this time of year after all the four Grand Slams have played, we’ve got some big names not entering due to injuries and other issues. No problem here, this BNP Paribas Open will feature 16 of the Top 20 players in the FedEX ATP Rankings led by Danil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev, and Matteo Berrettini. And as with the last tournaments here, the tournament director is former World No. 2 Tommy Haas. For all info on the players, the draws, and all the current play, simply go to bnpparibasopen. com and click on the link to what you wish to read, from ticket sales to on-premises restaurants. Easy enough! For tennis players and non-players who have not visited this beautiful Coachella venue, it’s on the bucket list of places to go and see in this Palm Springs’ surrounds. What this column will now alert you to are the venues that are supplying the thirsty world contained here at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. For your convenience, we’ve listed the beverage & eateries by name so you can simply ask any grounds staff for directions of the spot you’re looking to check out. As with most years here at the Tennis Garden, we have the Moët & Chandon Circle of Palms, where one can enjoy champagne all day long at this beautiful setting. I think Moët & Chandon cover’s most of the Grand Slam tournaments around the globe. I certainly enjoyed their Brut Rosé Champagne over at the Rolands Garros French Open in Paris (what great memories to be able to travel) back in June 2019. So at the Moët & Chandon Circle of Palms, there is seating every which way: You can enjoy your Champagne at the bar, on tables on the grass, in mini-cabanas, or you can take the (plastic) Champagne flutes along as you walk about the venue. Kim Crawford Clubhouse: The new Kim Crawford Clubhouse is located in the Food Village, and serves up classic wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé and Pinot Noir, as well as their popular

14

signature frozen Kim Crawford Ace Frosé cocktail. Sipsmith London Bar: Try the signature “Smith Your G&T” – a classic gin and tonic from the new Official Gin Partner of the BNP Paribas Open, Sipsmith London Dry Gin. Corona Premier Pavilion & Bar: Sip an icecold Corona Premier while listening to live entertainment on the Village Stage. Agave: Sip on a margarita and enjoy some chips and salsa in this new cocktail lounge on the southeast side of Stadium 2. New for October, order any of their specialty margaritas and receive a complimentary order of chips and salsa! Paradise Pavilion: Serving specialty cocktails, beer, wine, and other beverages near Stadium 2 Corona Oasis: A selection of local craft beer as well as French dips and snacks located on the loge level of Stadium. And for you coffee & tea folks, check out Mostly Roasted: Located in the Food Village, Mostly Roasted will offer hot and cold brewed coffee as well as espresso beverages and gelato from local Southern California roaster Joshua Tree Coffee, as well as fresh Tazo iced teas and more. The restaurant scene is the venue’s loyal eateries: Nobu: Enjoy critically acclaimed cuisine exquisitely prepared by James Beard chef, Nobu Matsuhisa. His signature blend of traditional Japanese dishes with South American ingredients will satiate your tastebuds as you keep an eye on the on-court action in Stadium 2. Spago: Experience a world-class dining experience in Wolfgang Puck’s award-winning Spago restaurant, featuring the best in Beverly Hills-style Californian cuisine. Dine in delight while watching tennis with unprecedented views of Stadium 1. Piero’s PizzaVino: Indulge in authentic Neapolitan pizza, made with all-natural, traditional flavors straight from Italy. As your pizza is expertly prepared in an 800-degree wood-burning oven, relax on the outdoor patio area and sip a glass of wine as you overlook Stadium Plaza. Full menu also includes appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and entrees. Fresh Agave Mexican Bar and Grill: Fresh Agave Mexican Bar and Grill is a local Palm Desert favorite offering a blend of traditional and contemporary Mexican cuisine at a full-service restaurant overlooking the court on Stadium 2. The menu features a variety of authentic Mexican dishes and a curated selection of high-quality cocktails, tequilas, and their famous margaritas. Fortunately for this columnist, I cover not only wine, food & beverage, but tennis as well, as I have the titanium knees and new shoulder to show for a full life playing competitive tennis…. So, anyone for tennis? Cheers!

CYBER CORNER

E

very computer, whether it's a desktop or a laptop, has an age limit. There may be something wrong with the computer or that it is simply slowing down with age. There comes a point when you have no choice but to bite the bullet and invest in a replacement. Although no computer lasts forever, you might be able to extend its life to get the most out of your investment. Every computer eventually slows down, even if you use it for the same activities you did five years ago. Over time, you'll get Windows updates or a new version of macOS. Even your apps will upgrade over time, and the web pages you visit may take more resources than they did previously. When should I upgrade my PC? A Computer is made up of many different components, some of which have a much greater impact on performance than others. Manufacturers are continuously trying to make these components faster, smaller, and more efficient as technology advances. Hardware is continuously being tweaked and improved, and new products with a lot of new features are always being produced. It's easy to get caught up in this process, thinking that you should be updating before you need to. When you notice that your PC is negatively affecting your daily use and restricting you from performing the tasks you want to do, it is time to update. This varies depends on the nature of the task you're performing. Gaming PCs are a good example of this because the requirements for various games vary greatly. If you want to play triple-A titles with stunning 4K visuals, you'll require top-tier technology, and your components will need to be upgraded more frequently than someone happy to play older games at fairly low graphical settings. Replacing your PC is more expensive than simply updating, however sometimes it’s essential and preferred. Here are some important reasons when you need to update or replace: Common issues: Unless your computer is undergoing a major software update, starting

up and shutting down should only take 30-60 seconds. If each of these two processes takes multiple minutes or more to complete, your machine may be too old. Other examples of ongoing issues include graphics issues, excessive CPU usage, temperature problems, and so on, which may incur additional costs to fix. When all factors are considered, a replacement may be the better option in this situation. Older Operating systems: The latest software versions need CPU power that older systems simply do not have. If you try to run them on an old computer, the applications may load slowly or not at all. To avoid problems, make sure your machine meets the software's basic system requirements before installing it. If your computer can no longer handle many of the apps you use often, consider replacing it. Similarly, Microsoft no longer supports computers running Windows 7 or earlier. This is important to consider because these updates are critical for your PC's security and overall efficiency. Operating System upgrades may be expensive, and the cost of this, plus upgrades could be used to purchase a new PC. Overheating hardware: Fans keep your laptop or desktop computer's central processor unit (CPU) from overheating. The more complex tasks your computer performs the harder the CPU operates and the hotter it

NATIONAL DEPRESSION AND MENTAL HEALTH SCREENING MONTH

T

hese are certainly challenging times. Stress and depression with most people is on the rise not just nationally, but globally. We all experience varying degrees of depression. Brining and sharing awareness is key to controlling it before it gets out of control. October is National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month. This observance works to bring awareness to the need for depression awareness and the need for accessible and affordable mental health screenings. A number of different factors can often come into play with depression that can include a mix of environmental, genetic, psychological, and biological /biochemical components. Not everyone experiences depression in the same way, but it can affect anyone at any time. So, it is important to take that next step and seek out professional help and be screened if you or someone you care about

16

feels they may be depressed. Depression is a highly treatable condition with many different options available, but a professional should be sought out to help determine the best course of action for every individual that is suffering from it. Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/ g9gdZa7q.

becomes. This causes the fans to spin faster, resulting in a noticeable buzzing sound and feel on your machine. If you hear the fans buzzing even when performing simple tasks, it might signify that the CPU is no longer up to the task and has to be replaced. You may decide that merely replacing the components of your computer makes more sense than purchasing a completely new system. Unfortunately, newer components are often incompatible with older machines. In the end, you may have to replace more parts than you anticipated and spend more money than if you had simply purchased a new computer. As you can see there is a lot to consider when determining whether to update or replace your current PC, but following these guidelines above should help you make a decision. It would be ideal if we could predict when to fix and when to replace. However, it is impossible to provide hard numbers that

apply to everyone. That is why such diagnostics are useful. In general, if you know a single component is to blame for your computer's slowness, updating that component can likely prolong your machine's lifespan by a few years. If a large number of components are straining to keep up, you are running on borrowed time. In such a situation, you're probably better off purchasing a new computer. You may still be wondering what to do, and if it’s time, how to choose your next computer. This is where our Eggsperts can help! Our Eggsperts are eggcellent in helping with deciding whether to upgrade your existing computer or if it’s time to upgrade to a new machine. Have a suggestion for our next article? I

n my experience as an investment advisor, I find that most people are either too conservative or too aggressive. People come to conclusions based on a few data points but then fail to see the larger concern or investment opportunity without guidance or input from someone more experienced. This week, let’s consider whether fixed income (aka bonds) or stocks (aka equities) are over-valued, undervalued, or priced just right. Are Bonds Overvalued? The short answer is ‘yes’. The 10-year Treasury is 1.5% with inflation above 5%. If the costs are increasing at a 5% rate, borrowing should be be higher. This inversion is because the Federal Reserve and Central Banks around the world are keeping rates low to help businesses harmed by the pandemic as well as consumers with historically low loan rates. When interest rates are lower than the inflation rate, we have negative real rates. This is meant to stimulate consumption while helping borrowers. The policy hurts investors as debt held earns less than the implied devaluation of the underlying currency aka inflation. Negative real rates erode purchasing power to those owning the bonds. This rate phenomena causes assets like real estate and equities to increase in value at the expense of debtholders. Governments around the world are subsidizing borrowing rates. Through September, the U.S. government was buying $120 billion in Treasuries and mortgagebacked bonds per month. Since the start of the pandemic, the Fed has grown its balance sheet by roughly $8 trillion. While some of these

funds are borrowed from investors and other governments, the largest creditor to the U.S government is the American people as most of debt issued to pay for the asset purchases is simply an I.O.U. from the Federal Reserve to the U.S. Treasury. With debt levels at historic highs during a period of negative real rates, monetary policy is extremely accommodative. Wellrun companies that use debt to grow income face a Goldilocks economic environment. This interest rate environment also helps to keep zombie companies alive while helping municipalities to afford increased borrowing needs. If you are worried a decline in your buying power over time, greater reliance on equities with an emphasis on financially strong dividend paying companies is necessary to recoup the inflation gap. Are Equities Overvalued? Some are for sure. Meme stocks like AMC or Gamestop continue to retain market values that make little sense. The interesting part that many overlook is that half of all S&P 500

DALEGRIBOW ON THELAW

stocks are down more than 20% since hitting record highs in March. Despite this, the S&P 500 is up nearly 15% on the year. This discrepancy is because the index is driven by the valuations 1020 mega-cap companies led by Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Google, Netflix, Tesla, and Facebook. Looking at the Price/Earnings ratio, this index was expensive at 35.6x this time last year and is 31.1x at present. If we look at projections for 2022 (termed the forward P/E ratio), this index looks much healthier at 22.0x. The Dow 30 is up a bit more than 10% with relatively modest P/E ratio of 22.4x, down from 27.3x one year ago. If we look at Dows’ forward P/E here, we get a reasonable 18.9 P/E ratio. The tech heavy NASDAQ 100 appears overvalued with a P/E of 36x and forward P/E of 29x. With interest rates expected to stay low for years, the valuations of most large and midcap companies appear fair with many looking undervalued due to negative real interest rates as well as businesses and consumers

flush with cash. Current market conditions are nearly ideal for well-run and profitable companies. When investing in equities, choose bestin-class companies with defensible market niches, strong cash flow, low debt and proven management teams. When looking at your portfolio, be concerned about long-dated and low quality bonds. In both cases, risks currently exceed returns significantly. When it comes to stocks, be careful but market conditions and valuations suggest that prices are more likely to go up than down over the next 15 months. LEGAL REPRESENTATION OF THE INJURED & CRIMINALLY ACCUSED

ARE MANDATORY COVID VACCINES AKIN TO A DUI???

T

he government has a responsibility to its citizens, to protect them. If you want to drink at home, great, but if you want to drink and then get on the public roads and maybe harm or kill someone, then it is incumbent on the government to protect all of us from Drunk Drivers. We do that with DUI laws preventing drivers from Drinking and Driving. Remember you don’t have to be drunk. You merely have to be impaired. When does that occur?… when it affects your ability to drive. The law has determined that to be a .08 blood alcohol reading. For many people that will be by their third drink………and for some, their second. The universal symbol of justice has scales to weigh the evidence on both sides of legal matters. The common theme in all areas of law is balancing. We all recognize the symbol of Lady Justice balancing each side of the arguments. The law balances the pros and cons of everything…even vaccines! If you don’t get vaccinated, then you are exposing other members of society, your family and friends. Balance that against mandating vaccines for the better good of society. Balance the inconvenience of one group to the substantial possibility of their being a carrier or getting Covid themselves. The vaccines are no different than so many of the vaccines we have been getting since childhood. Who ever asked what was in the

Polio Vaccine? We accept that if the CDC and other governmental entities approved the vaccine then it is safe. Nothing is 100%, but statistics show that the vast majority of those in the hospital with COVID, are unvaccinated...coincidence? I think not. Yes, you may still get Covid but it will almost certainly be a mild case and not require hospitalization and intubations requiring a hole in your throat. Not everyone who gets the shot is totally protected from getting Covid. However, if you do, the symptoms will be much less severe and almost certainly not involve hospitalization. Statistics show that 99% of those in the hospital for Covid are Unvaccinated. The shots are not a political issue but rather a scientific one. I just learned a few hours ago of yet another person I knew, who at 53, passed away this week from COVID. This is no HOAX, as some would have you believe. Even US Supreme Court Justice Kavanaugh has tested positive in the last week…and he was vaccinated! However, he has no symptoms. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation out there. Alex Jones, the Conspiracy Theorist, who said the school shooting a few years ago was a HOAX, was just ordered to pay a large amount of money to parents of children killed in the school shooting. It appears he made up the idea that there was no school shooting and that the

shooting was another government hoax. I’m not sure who first suggested all the things that were allegedly wrong with the shots and whether is was intentionally a lie or not. However, 99% of the doctors urge us to all get a vaccinated. My best advice, if you are stopped and you have been drinking as suggested in the first paragraph, is to say: Upon the advice of my attorney, Dale Gribow, I exercise my right to remain silent until you contact him at (760) 837-7500 or dale@dalegribowlaw.com for an OK to talk. Attorney Gribow, has advised me the VOLUNTARY FIELD SOBRIETY AND BREATH TESTS, at the scene, are OPTIONAL (unless one

is on probation). Thus I elect not to take them. I want to cooperate and am happy to take a BLOOD TEST. SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE ARTICLE? CANNABIS CORNER

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com

BY RUTH HILL R.N.

A

decade ago, more than half of all drug arrests were because of marijuana. According to the ACLU, states spent more than $3 billion per year enforcing marijuana laws. Today, twentyone states consider it illegal for employers to discriminate against employees for use of medical marijuana. Five states and seven cities, including Washington D.C. and Atlanta, go further and protect employees from discrimination based on the recreational use of marijuana. The conundrum of marijuana testing is a positive test for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, (THC) can show up after one month of use. An employee whose alcohol use during the workday will not be tested unless they show signs of impaired work performance. So, why test for marijuana. Managers can monitor drug abuse by looking for the following behaviors: avoidance of co-workers, irrational blaming of others for their mistakes, a decline in the employee’s personal appearance or hygiene, complains of failing relationships at home, or finally, the taking of time off from work for vague illnesses or family problems. Medical cannabis physicians teach users that symptom relief comes without the high and will not fall in those categories. A study published in the National Bureau of Economic Research, specifically looked at the effect recreational marijuana use would have on worker’s compensation benefits for those between 40 and 60 years old. Researchers found declines in worker’s compensation use, as well as non-traumatic workplace injuries. They theorized that access to an additional form of pain relief contributed to these drops. The development of an accurate electronic potency measuring device acceptable to the court system for marijuana or other THC products has yet. Because of the discriminatory testing of THC vs opioids/alcohol/cocaine or other intoxicants many employees in some parts of the state are moving to eliminate preemployment testing of THC. In other California legislative news, after 25 years of legal use of cannabis for medicinal purposes, Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation by Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego) expanding end-of-life treatment options for Californians by requiring hospitals and certain types of healthcare facilities in the

state allow terminally ill patients the use of medical cannabis for treatment and/or pain relief. The legislation does not require the health facility to provide medicinal cannabis, nor does it require the facility to dispense the cannabis from the pharmacy. The US DOJ is prohibited from using any federal funds to interfere with state medical cannabis laws, and the Biden Administration has made every indication that it will not interfere with state cannabis laws, medical or recreational. Currently, terminally ill patients in California healthcare facilities are given heavy opiates for pain that rob them of their precious last moments with family and friends. Does this mean a terminally ill patient’s family will be allowed to bring cannabis into the hospital and administer cannabis to their loved ones? Not by a long shot. The medical politics in Coachella Valley and other parts of the state will continue to fight the implementation of this law. Similar to the backlash the medical community exhibited when the assisted death legislation passed years ago, medical physicians opposed to cannabis will deny referrals to hospices who want to carry out Ryan’s Law. While Sen. Hueso has received confirmation from CMS and the safeguards in the law, that healthcare facilities have the necessary authority to implement these provisions while ensuring the safety of other patients, guests, and employees of the healthcare facility, compliance with other state laws, and the safe operations of the healthcare facility, it will be a lengthy battle to see this law implemented. Policies will need to be agreed upon along with protocols presented to ethical committees. Physicians will still fear the loss of their medical licenses. The physician’s orders for cannabis will need to be written. But what physician in Coachella Valley is an expert in the specialty of cannabis? None. In a state where only 53% of the fiftyeight counties in California allow for commercial Medicinal/Adult-Use cannabis business operations, we have a long way to go before our local hospitals allow Ryan’s Law to be implemented. FREEWILL ASTROLOGY

WEEK OF OCTOBER 7

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Aries poet Anna Kamieńska said her soul didn’t emanate light. It was filled with “bright darkness.” I suspect that description may apply to you in the coming weeks. Bright darkness will be one of your primary qualities. And that’s a good thing! You may not be a beacon of shiny cheer, but you will illuminate the shadows and secrets. You will bring deeper awareness to hidden agendas and sins of omission. You will see, and help others to see, what has been missing in situations that lack transparency. Congratulations in advance! TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “There is something truly restorative, finally comforting, in coming to the end of an illusion—a false hope.” So declared author Sue Miller, and now I’m sharing it with you, Taurus—just in time for the end of at least one of your illusions. (Could be two, even three.) I hope your misconceptions or misaligned fantasies will serve you well as they decay and dissolve. I trust they will be excellent fertilizer, helping you grow inspired visions that guide your future success. My prediction: You will soon know more about what isn’t real, which will boost your ability to evaluate what is real. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Afghan-American novelist Khaled Hosseini writes, “People mostly have it backward. They think they live by what they want. But really what guides them is what they’re afraid of—what they don’t want.” Is that true for you, Gemini? The coming weeks will be an excellent time to meditate on that question. And if you find you’re motivated to live your life more out of fear than out of love, I urge you to take strenuous action to change that situation! Make sure love is at least 51 percent and fear no more than 49 percent. I believe you can do much better than that, though. Aim for 75 percent love! CANCER (June 21-July 22): “Sometimes dreams are wiser than waking.” Oglala Lakota medicine man Black Elk said that, and now I’m passing it on to you. It’s not always the case that dreams are wiser than waking, of course, but I suspect they will be for you in the coming weeks. The adventures you experience while you’re sleeping could provide crucial clues to inform your waking-life decisions. They should help you tune into resources and influences that will guide you during the coming months. And now I will make a bold prediction: that your dreams will change your brain chemistry in ways that enable you to see truths that until now have been invisible or unavailable. (PS: I encourage you to also be alert for intriguing insights and fantasies that well up when you’re tired or lounging around.) LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “Don’t hope more than you’re willing to work,” advises author Rita Mae Brown. So let me ask you, Leo: How hard are you willing to work to make your dreams come true, create your ideal life, and become the person you’d love to be? When you answer that question honestly, you’ll know exactly how much hope you have earned the right to foster. I’m pleased to inform you that the coming weeks will be a favorable time to upgrade your commitment to the work and therefore deepen your right to hope. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “To be truly visionary, we have to root our imagination in our concrete reality while simultaneously imagining possibilities beyond that reality.” This shrewd advice comes from author bell hooks (who doesn’t capitalize her name). I think it should be at the heart of your process in the coming days. Why? Because you now have an extraordinary potential to dream up creative innovations that acknowledge your limitations but also transcend those limitations. You have extra power available to harness your fantasies and instigate practical changes. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “Some people are crazy drunk on rotgut sobriety,” wrote aphorist Daniel Liebert. I trust you’re not one of them. But if you are, I beg you to change your habits during the next three weeks. According to my reading of the astrological omens, you have a heavenly

mandate to seek more than the usual amounts of whimsical ebullience, sweet diversions, uplifting obsessions, and holy amusements. Your health and success in the coming months require you to enjoy a period of concentrated joy and fun now. Be imaginative and innovative in your quest for zest. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Scottish Poet Laureate Jackie Kay, born under the sign of Scorpio, writes, “It used to be that privacy came naturally to everybody and that we understood implicitly what kind of things a person might like to keep private. Now somebody has torn up the rule book on privacy and there’s a kind of free fall and free for all and few people naturally know how to guard this precious thing, privacy.” The coming weeks will be a good time for you to investigate this subject, Scorpio—to take it more seriously than you have before. In the process, I hope you will identify what’s truly important for you to keep confidential and protected, and then initiate the necessary adjustments. (PS: Please feel no guilt or embarrassment about your desire to have secrets!) SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “All our Western thought is founded on this repulsive pretense that pain is the proper price of any good thing,” wrote feisty author Rebecca West (1892– 1983). I am very happy to report that your current torrent of good things will NOT require you to pay the price of pain. On the contrary, I expect that your phase of grace and luck will teach you how to cultivate even more grace and luck; it will inspire you to be generous in ways that bring generosity coming back your way. As articulated by ancient Chinese philosopher Sun Tzu, here’s the operative principle: “Opportunities multiply as they are seized.” CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “If you don’t ask, the answer is always no,” declares author Nora Roberts. In that spirit and in accordance with astrological omens, I urge you to be bold and lucid about asking for what you want in the coming weeks. In addition, I encourage you to ask many probing questions so as to ferret out the best ways to get what you want. If you are skilled in carrying out this strategy, you will be a winsome blend of receptivity and aggressiveness, innocent humility and understated confidence. And that will be crucial in your campaign to get exactly what you want. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “Few persons enjoy real liberty,” wrote poet Alfred de Musset. “We are all slaves to ideas or habits.” That’s the bad news. The good news is that October is Supercharge Your Freedom Month for you Aquarians. I invite you to use all your ingenuity to deepen, augment, and refine your drive for liberation. What could you do to escape the numbness of the routine? How might you diminish the hold of limiting beliefs and inhibiting patterns? What shrunken expectations are impinging on your motivational verve? Life is blessing you with the opportunity to celebrate and cultivate what novelist Tim Tharp calls “the spectacular now.” Be a cheerful, magnanimous freedom fighter. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): The brilliant Piscean composer Frédéric Chopin (1810–1849) wrote, “I wish I could throw off the thoughts that poison my happiness, but I take a kind of pleasure in indulging them.” What?! That’s crazy! If he had been brave enough and willful enough to stop taking pleasure in indulging his toxic thoughts, they might have lost their power to demoralize him. With this in mind, I’m asking you to investigate whether you, like Chopin, ever get a bit of secret excitement from undermining your own joy and success. The coming weeks will be a favorable time to dissolve that bad habit. Homework. Hold your own hand and tell yourself what you will do to end a nagging discomfort in your life. https://Newsletter. PET PLACE

O

ctober has finally arrived, there is a tinge of cooler weather in the air, and Halloween kicks off the holiday season at the end of the month. Thanksgiving and Christmas are associated with items potentially dangerous to animals, but Halloween can also pose threats to pets. Halloween candy poses the greatest threat to both cats and dogs, and great care must be taken to keep it out of reach. Big dogs have been known to jump on kitchen counters to steal a snack, and too much candy can send him to an expensive veterinary appointment. The following list can help you keep Fido and Fluffy safe. Candy, particularly chocolate and candy made with artificial sweetener, is poisonous

HALLOWEEN HAZARDS FOR PETS escape. Left outdoors, Fido will create more neighborhood nuisance with his barking. Be careful with candle-lit pumpkins. Your pet could knock one over and start a fire. He could get burnt by getting too close to one of these decorations. Better yet, buy pumpkins that are artificially lit. We humans enjoy putting festive costumes on pets. While some animals enjoy the attention others (particularly cats) find dressing up stressful. Make sure that costumes don’t constrict or contain dangerous items. Keep your animals in a separate back room during trick-or-treat time, unless they are super friendly and not likely to escape from the open front door. Animals can become stressed from seeing too many strangers masked and in costume. Be vigilant about not keeping your front door open when you pass out Halloween candy. Step outside and close the door behind you when you pass out candy to trick-or-treaters. It only takes a few seconds for a frightened dog or cat to dash out into the night. Have a wonderful holiday, whether you are attending an adult Halloween party or passing out treats to the neighborhood kids. I predict there will be more events this year for you and your loved ones to enjoy. Janetmcafee8@gmail.com --------------------------------------------------

to most animals. Depending on the size of the animal, large amounts of candy can even prove fatal. Call poison control and your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your pet ingested candy. Tin foil and cellophane wrappers are hazardous if swallowed. Don’t leave your dog or cat outside in the yard on Halloween. There will be lots of folks walking and driving around most neighborhoods, and sadly some of them have evil intent. A previous column discussed the rise in pet theft during the pandemic, and thieves can steal your pet and sell it for easy drug money. Black cats are particularly vulnerable to people who might want to harm them. Visitors may leave gates unlocked causing your dog to
