n Thursday, October 28, there will be a RockStock & 2 Smoking Barrels charity benefit concert presented by new Coachella Valley hard rock band Tattoo The Serpent. The event will take place from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Plan B Live Entertainment & Cocktails, and features a lineup of different bands to raise awareness to an important cause.

Annais Valle is a two-year-old girl from Desert Hot Springs who was diagnosed with Leukemia three months ago. All proceeds raised at the RockStock & 2 Smoking Barrels charity benefit concert are to help with the funding of her healthcare expenses. Annais’ mother, Aracely Valle, is the best friend of event organizer Cory Yost’s fiancé.

“I was already in the midst of planning some kind of show for Tattoo The Serpent, and when my fiancé told me about Annais’ diagnosis, I knew immediately that I wanted to do something to help out. Only a couple of hours after I proposed the idea, the rest of the band was all for it and thought it was an excellent cause. So we are putting a honey pot out there for anyone who can donate to help Annais,” stated Yost.

Yost (aka Kori Chaotic) is from Thousand Palms and is the singer/songwriter/main guitarist for Tattoo The Serpent. Other members of the band include Johnathon Sweetnam of Cathedral City on guitar, Tyler Russell of Twentynine Palms on bass, and Fernando Watson of Palm Desert on drums.

Watson is also the former drummer of the

band Liquid Blue.

Tattoo The Serpent formed in March of 2019 and has a sound that can be described as raw, unadulterated hard rock. The band’s songs focus on themes of nonconformity and breaking away from a cookie cutter society.

Just when the band was preparing to make a live concert debut, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, so the benefit concert will also be a way to showcase the band and other talented musical acts in the desert.

“During the pandemic shutdown, the band decided to use that time to work on a really good catalogue of songs and start polishing our performance. We didn’t want to be just your copy-and-paste, run-of-the-mill local band. We want to be a band that comes to mind when you think about big events or community outreach,” said Yost.

Other bands that will be performing at the RockStock & 2 Smoking Barrels charity benefit concert are Saints & Rebels, Oceans Apart, DJ Red, Spankshaft, Daytime Moon, and Aveline Wallflower. The concert is a 21 and over event with free admission.

“I think I have a passion for event planning now. It’s all really coming together. I got some backdrops so it’s not only going to be an audio journey; it will be visual too. I am very much looking forward to the concert and will be grateful for anyone who can stop by and donate,” said Yost.

The RockStock & 2 Smoking Barrels charity benefit concert will be live-streamed on the band’s YouTube channel, Tattoo The Serpent.

ountry music returns to the desert next week with rock/country band Kevin Costner & Modern West’s “Tales From Yellowstone Tour” on Friday, October 22, 2021 at 8pm and country singer-songwriter Dustin Lynch on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 8:00 p.m. at The Show at Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa. Next spring, Country Thunder From Down Under will perform at The Show on Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30, 2022. Tickets for the general public are available for purchase now.

Founded by Costner in 2007, Kevin Costner & Modern West released its debut album, Untold Truths, on November 11, 2008, on Universal South Records. The album peaked at No. 61 on the Billboard Top Country Albums and No. 35 on the “Top

Heatseekers” chart. The album produced three singles, “Superman 14,” “Long Hot Night,” and “Backyard.” In February 2010 the band released their sophomore album Turn It On only in Europe. To support the album, the band went on tour in Europe, which resulted in Turn It On reaching the album charts in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Greece.

The first single from the album “Let Me Be the One,” features special guest Sara Beck singing with Costner.

Dustin Lynch broke into the Nashville mainstream in 2012 with his chart-topping eponymous debut, which introduced fans to his slick and catchy bro-country style. Over the coming years, he began to blend his rural tones with more R&B and pop elements and was rewarded with a string of hits in the middle

part of the decade. He earned an induction into the Grand Ole Opry before returning in 2020 with his fourth album, Tullahoma.

He released his debut single, “Cowboys and Angels,” in 2012 reaching No. 2 on the Billboard country chart. Its accompanying album, Dustin Lynch, topped the Country Albums chart generating the hit “Cranks My Tractor.” In September 2014 Lynch released his second album, Where It's At producing three more hits including his first No. 1 single, “Where It's At (Yep, Yep).” Riding a wave of momentum, his next two singles, “Seein' Red” and “Small Town Boy,” both hit No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart and were included on his third album, Current Mood. After his next single, “Good Girl,” topped the Country Airplay chart, Lynch was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in September 2018. A threesong EP, Ridin' Roads, appeared in the early part of 2019. Along with the single “Good Girl,” the title track of Ridin' Roads found its way onto Tullahoma, the full-length followup to Current Mood, which was released in January 2020.

This will be a great event and tribute to Walter Bryan “BB” Ingle who passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2020. BB was well known throughout the CV as a promoter, philanthropist, and humanitarian.

The event will be at the beautiful Westin Resort in Rancho Mirage. It begins at 8:00 pm until the bars close. This will be the grand reopening of the new Westin “Backyard” however, the event will be resort wide with music, performers and DJs in multiple rooms.

OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH “DOMESTIC VIOLENCE – A HISTORY”

H

e stalked her. Beat her. Threw her down a flight of stairs. Ran over her with his car. Raped her. Took control of all of the money. Isolated her from family and friends. Terrified the children.

Brutalized her over imagined wrong-doings.

Reduced her self-worth to ashes. Kept her bruised, bloody and broken….but why didn’t she just leave?

American women experience 4.8 million physical assaults and rapes at the hands of their intimate partner every year.

(Source: National Organization for Women) 1 in 4 American women, (25%), experience sexual violence, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime. These statistics do not include all violence against women in the U.S. With such a shockingly high figure for a developed nation, it’s no wonder why the U.S. has been an outlier on the list of worst countries for women. In looking at the history of violence against women, the only surprise is the level of denial still in effect in 2021.

In the late 1400’s, Friar Cherubino of Siena, in his Rules of Marriage, created the process by which a husband was to rule his wife, recommending: ‘When you see your wife commit an offense, don’t rush at her with insults and violent blows…Scold her sharply, bully and terrify her. And if this still doesn’t work…take up a stick and beat her soundly, for it is better to punish the body and correct the soul than to damage the soul and spare the body…then readily beat her, not in rage but out of charity and concern for her soul, so that the beating will redound to your merit and her good.’”

Coverture, was a legal doctrine established as a part of the founding laws of America.

It is an Anglo-American Common Law, that dictated once married, a woman’s legal existence as an individual was eradicated under “marital unity,” Coverture considered husband and wife a single legal entity: that entity being the husband. The law stripped a woman of all legal control over her property, her possessions, her children and even her physical person. The husband had exclusive power and this included the right to physically assault her and their children. This law began to be disassembled in the United States through legislation in the late 1880’s, though the subjugation of women has been maintained

through church and cultural teachings. A big motivation in the fight for women’s suffrage, was the goal of self-governance and the ability to protect themselves and their children from emotional and physical violence.

Women were also a driving force behind the prohibition movement of the early twentieth century. According to Daniel Okrent, former Time Inc. editor-at-large and author of Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition, “Men would go to the tavern, drink away mortgage money, drink so much they couldn’t go to work the next day, beat their wives, abuse their children. That’s what launched the beginning of the temperance movement,” In 1994, Congress passed the Violence Against Women Act ("VAWA"). This Act recognized that domestic violence was a national crime.

Though making something illegal after centuries of indoctrination and acceptance, does not fix the problem. An intolerance for violence against women has to be ingrained in the human psyche.

From 2016 through 2018 the number of intimate partner violence victimizations in the United States increased 42%. Perhaps a reflection of the toxic acceptance of misogyny emanating from the top leadership in the U.S. 1 in 2 (50%) of female murder victims are killed by intimate partners 19% of intimate partner violence involves a weapon and an abuser’s access to a firearm increases the risk of intimate partner femicide by 400%.

In 2018, partner violence accounted for 20% of all violent crime.

Intimate partner violence is most common against women between the ages of 18-24.

65% of all murder-suicides are perpetrated by intimate partners and 96% of murdersuicide victims are female.

Domestic Violence during the Covid lockdown ballooned at a staggering rate around the globe. Cultural and religious norms have allowed the violence against and subjugation of women to continue. Often ignored or rationalized, it is uncomfortable to confront the screams and easier to ignore the terror we know is taking place behind a drawn curtain. We prefer to believe that America isn’t guilty of supporting some of the highest rates of violence against women in any

developed country and as a result we allow ourselves to become unwitting accomplices in a national epidemic that has no end in sight.

Why doesn’t she leave? Every year 4,000 victims of domestic violence are murdered.

(That is a greater number than America suffering through a catastrophic annual 9/11 event.) According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 95% of these murders are committed by men against women. Yet battered women who stay with their abusers are at a 75% less risk of getting killed by them because leaving an abusive relationship ironically puts their lives at greater risk due to the abuser’s fear of losing control.

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence defines Domestic Violence as the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior

as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, threats, economic, and emotional/psychological abuse.

Every individual has the power to make a difference. Save a life, empower others and stop accepting violence against women as a cultural norm.

“You never, never, never, never know how much I love you, true love is hard to quantify, cos the time I love you best is when you’re east and I am west and the time that I love you most is when you’re on the other coast” hat’s Asleep At The Wheel practicing some serious social distance lovin’ on “I Love You Most Of All (When You’re Not Here),” a song off their brand new album.

If you aren’t familiar with the legendary Texas band, well, you have about five decades’ worth of amazing music to catch up with.

Waaaaaayyyyy back in 1970, Ray Benson, Lucky Oceans (ne’ Rueben Gosfield) and Leroy Preston started the band in Paw, Paw West Virginia. Psychedelia, Prog Rock, Motown, Stax-Volt and sensitive singer-songwriter songs ruled the airwaves, but these guys had something different in mind. So, they whipped up a potent combo-platter of Country Blues, Honky-Tonk, Western Swing, Jazz, Big Band and Country Western Soul. Their hope was their original songs could stack up next to legends like Hank Williams, Sr., Cindy Walker and Willie Nelson. The addition of vocalist Chris O’Connor added a little distaff kick to their sound.

Surprisingly, the Woodstock generation seemed to embrace their slightly twisted vision, and soon enough they were opening for the likes of Alice Cooper and Hot Tuna.

Commander Cody convinced the band to relocate to Oakland, and they began to distinguish themselves in the fertile Bay Area music scene. Van Morrison name-checked AATW in a Rolling Stone interview, and suddenly they were offered a deal from United Artists Records.

Pulling up stakes a final time, they moved to Austin, Texas at the behest of their hero and new pal, Willie Nelson. They cycled through a couple of different labels, Epic, and then Capitol, before finally scoring a bona fide hit in 1974: “The Letter Johnnie Walker Read.” Three years later, they were voted Best Country Band

by Rolling Stone and followed that accolade by hitting the road with Emmylou Harris.

Throughout the ‘70s they cultivated a passionate fan base, but the ‘80s was a turbulent time for the band. First Lucky left the fold, then a pregnant Chris O’Connor bowed out for a bit. The band accumulated some debt, but worked it down. The ‘90s saw more line-up changes, but the band persevered and as the 20th century wound down, they released Ride With Bob via Dreamworks Records. Although it was their second tribute to Western Swing King Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys, on this outing they enlisted some famous pals (and fellow Bob Wills fanatics), like Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam and Lyle Lovett. They also corralled up-and-comers like the Dixie Chicks and Lee Ann Womack and even some Rock acts like Shawn Colvin and Squirrel Nut Zippers. A critical and commercial success, the album reached #24 on the Country charts and received seven Grammy nominations (it won three awards). The next year they were invited to open Bob Dylan and later, George Strait.

In the last 20 years, the band has continued to tour and record. All told, they’ve released around 24 studio albums and won nine Grammy Awards. The line-up has ebbed and flowed, but Ray Benson has remained through thick and thin. As their 50th anniversary was approaching, he gathered current and original

members together to celebrate the milestone.

Of course, the pandemic derailed most of their 2020 plans. Ray actually contracted the Corona Virus, but he lived to tell the tale. Now Asleep At The Wheel and some very special guests are back with their 25th effort, Half A Hundred Years.

The album kicks into gear with the title track. Lickety-split guitar, a wash of lap steel, fleet fiddle work, tensile bass lines and a syncopated horn section swing into action as Ray Benson offers a pocket history of the band; “The hills and dales tell many tales, I’ve heard them all my friend, With Willie we’ve been back and forth the road it never ends. from Bakersfield like Buck and Merle we’ve lived the hungry years, I tell ya friends, I’ve seen a lot in half a hundred years.” Much like Willie Nelson’s “On The Road Again,” the lyrics make few apologies for missing familial milestones, as the dream of making a livelihood as a working musician is too powerful; “I’ve watched the same sun burn the sand and melt the mountain snow, I’ve sailed the seas and felt the breeze that only sailors know, I’ve played for kings, seen many things that often bring a tear, you’ll see a lot if hang around for half a hundred years.” On the break, skittery, chicken-scratch guitar riffs sidle around brassy horns and sawing fiddles Three tracks throw the spotlight on A.A.T.W. O.G., drummer and vocalist, Leroy Preston. “I Do What I Must” is a somber drunkard’s lament, nearly camouflaged by the buoyant melody and peppery arrangement.

Red-hot Mariachi horns collide with sweeping, Grand Ole Opry-style strings, along with prickly electric guitar, sparkly piano runs and some lonesome lap steel. A former life-of-the-party chronicles his dipsomaniacal descent; “Now my days drag on much longer, so the nights seem shortened down, I spend a lot of time these days drinking about the town…I had a love but she left me, I had a house that’s been sold, I sometimes work for a dollar to stay out of the cold.” Jittery, delirium tremens guitar spins wildly out of control on the outro.

“The Photo” is another sad-sack sob story anchored by celestial fiddles, wily bass lines, stinging guitars, weepy lap steel and a giddyup backbeat. It’s another somebody-donesomebody-wrong song, the memories are just too fresh; “A snapshot from our love life watches me here all alone, so I’m taking down the photo, now the walls are bare as stone.”

Meanwhile, “Paycheck To Paycheck” executes a stylistic 180 and sticks the landing.

Jazzy piano notes and smoky harmonica lattice over upright bass, loose-limbed guitars and a slow-as-molasses groove. The laissez faire melody is juxtaposed by bleak lyrics that speak to economic disparity and the country’s never-ending epidemic: underemployment; “It makes for real hard livin’ you feel like you’ve been robbed, livin’ paycheck to paycheck, without any job.” A languid and elegant guitar solo unfurls on the break, bookended by imperious piano filigrees.

Chris O’Connor is front and center for three songs. “That’s How I Remember It” is a Soulful torch and twang that is enveloped by slinky guitars, roiling piano, a creamy string section, curvy horns, churchy Hammond B3 and a snappy backbeat. Her mien here is halfway between June Christy and Patsy Cline, as she unpacks a broken romance; “We shared a story

all our own, and passion we had never known and pain that cut right to the bone, that’s how I remember it.” On the break, mournful horns and plucky strings underscore her ache.

If Ella Fitzgerald were fronting the Our Gang’s zippy International Submarine Band, it might sound something like “It’s The Same Old South.” An expansive, Western Swing bounce that’s powered by Jitterbuggy horns, swooping fiddles, shaded lap steel, and boogie-woogie piano. Pointed lyrics astutely illustrate that the more things change, the more they stay the same down South; “Honey, shut my mouth, while the bloodhounds that once chased Liza, chased a poor CIO organizer, it’s the same old South.”

“My Little Baby” offers the wickedly funny saga of a housewife on a mission to reclaim her wandering spouse. Flinty fiddles, searing lap steel, jangly guitars and a slipstitch rhythm manage to accentuate her powers of persuasion; “If my little darlin’ won’t stay all night, I’m gonna shower, I’m gonna curl my hair, I’m gonna squeeze myself into that red size 5 he’s been beggin’ me to wear, just in case, I’ll put my handcuffs in my purse/If my little baby still walks this universe, I ain’t gonna cry all night, like a girl done wrong in a Country song, I ain’t gonna lose no sleep, feeling just because he’s gone, I’ll let the big boys talk, Smith, Wesson, De Le Renta, now where did I put them a-nylon hose, if I could just remember, my little baby won’t have a snow-ball’s chance/I’m going to show him, I’m going to knock him out, after runnin’ scared he’s going to wonder what the running was all about, well, just in case, I’ll put a chainsaw in my purse, Mmmhmm, if my little baby still walks this universe.”

Ray has his say, duetting with Lyle Lovett on “There You Go Again.” The pair trade verses on this Dixieland ramble that means to put a sham socialite in her place; “There you go again, red lipstick and the dyed blonde hair, sayin’ ‘hi,’ with a dramatic flair, off to Europe on a wing and a prayer.”

Resurrecting AATW’s first bona fide hit single, “The Letter That Johnny Walker Read,” Ray partners with Lee Ann Womack on this tart Texas Two-Step. Lyrics paint a vivid portrait of a checked-out husband and father deep in his cups, “too drunk to care.” Fluttery fiddle, along with shivery lap steel, plunking piano, braided acoustic riffs and brisk electric licks are tethered to a clip-clop gait.

Meanwhile, “Bump Bounce Boogie” is the album’s showstopper, landing somewhere between Slim & Slam’s “Flat Foot Floogie” and a souped-up Hank Thompson and His Brazos Valley Boys, with a soupcon of Andrews Sisters.

Ray, Chris O’Connell, Katie Shore and Elizabeth McQueen share vocal duties atop barrelhouse piano, an aerodynamic horn section, thumpity bass and swinging backbeat. On the break, a sleek guitar solo darts in and out of the mix.

Finally, Lucky Oceans fully channels his inner-Louis Prima on the aforementioned “I Love You Most Of All (When You’re Not Here).” A rollicking Jump-Blues number, it concocts a heady brew of punchy horns, elastic guitars and hazy lap steel. A walloping beat punctuates each pithy declaration of longhaul lovin; “Whoa, they say absence makes the heart grow fonder, well with that in mind, I think it’s time to wander, when my heart fills with affection when we travel in opposite directions, but when we reunite, well, we’re sure to fuss and fight, Well, you never never, never, never, know how much I love you, as long as you stand next to me.”

The balance of the album involves a host of special guests and feels like a well-deserved victory lap for the band. Willie Nelson and George Straight immediately up the ante when the Wheel backs them on Bob Wills’ Western Swing classic, “Take Me Back To Tulsa.” Singer-songwriter Bill Kirchen guides the band through a fiddle-tastic version of his and Dan Hicks’ woozy and loquacious “Word To The Wise.” Then Ray, Leroy Preston and Johnny Nicholas add some finger-poppin’ cool to the quintessential travelogue “(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66.”

Other interesting tracks include a gale-force instrumental entitled “The Wheel Boogie.”

“Spanish Two-Step” is a shimmery South Of The Border charmer. Then there’s the downhome jambalaya of “Miles And Miles Of Texas, which pays homage to the wide open spaces of the Lonestar state.

The album winds down with the one-two punch of “Marie” and “The Road Will Hold Me Tonight.” The former is an old Irving Berlin standard first popularized by crooner Rudy Vallee.’ The Wheel recalibrates the original’s ornate arrangement, stripping it down to a spiky Texas Two-Step accented by slurring lap steel, fluttery fiddles, meandering piano, a whipcrack beat and featuring Willie Nelson’s trademark phrasing out front. The latter, written by Ray Benson, is a vocal roundelay between Ray, Willie and Emmylou Harris. This cracked Country Waltz is propelled by sturdy upright bass, playful piano, trembling strings, sinewy guitars and a chunky beat. The lyrics deftly reiterate the allure of life out on the road, comes at a personal cost; “The road will hold me tonight, full moon shines it light, one town down, no end in sight, the road will hole me tonight/The time is never right, to leave your love in flight, the pull of the road is so strong and so right, and the road will hold me tonight.”

Half A Hundred Years is flat-out fun. There’s an affection and camaraderie that shines through on every track. Ray Benson has kept it together all these years. By never bowing down to fads or resorting to some sort of musical botox or filler, the band has retained its youthful glow. Asleep At The Wheel looks good at 50.

razilian designer Ilze Volkweis has made a name for herself in the Coachella Valley, establishing her fashion line throughout California, and now, she is featured at Insanity on El Paseo.

The famous “Rodeo Drive of the Desert” is home to high fashion brands and designers, making it a staple of Palm Desert.

“I think this shop is the best shop in the area. I love it so much. The clothes remind me of my own style and they are very fashionable. So I talked with Amy about including my clothes in her store and she agreed. I am so happy to have my clothes on El Paseo,” stated Ilze.

Ilze’s new fashion line is all handmade and made in Brazil. It is made of a native lace produced by local craftswomen called “renda de filé”. The intricate design of the clothing originates from European colonization in the 1800s near the Amazon, and is the same technique women would use to make fishing nets out of thread centuries ago.

This design method was also used for other home furnishings at the start of the 1900s. It became more popular in the 1980s, where this threading method was used to make clothing. It is a homemade and 100 percent organic clothing line that encompasses Brazilian culture and heritage.

Insanity has been in business for 14 years, featuring women’s luxury clothing, bags, shoes, and accessories. The boutique’s inventory consists of designers from across the globe to bring desert residents an exquisite selection of fashion straight from the runways of New York, London, Paris, and Milan.

ORANGE IS THE NEW NOIR

S

o what’s more seasonably apt than an “Orange Wine” for the Halloween month of October? That’s right! This column is always referring to the brave new world of wine; I know—you were hoping for some real wine info here, not some Kool-Aid stuff poured out of a Jack-o’-lantern.

But seriously folks, Orange wine is a type of wine—just like a rosé, but definitely not as popular. I think we can have a bit of fun playing around with Kool-Aid wine, especially with wine newbies who’ve never heard nor seen an Orange wine. But for those enthusiasts who know their stuff—they’ll no doubt think this column has gone silly and the whole exercise a bit droll.

Really quick—an “orange wine” is a made by fermenting white grapes in contact with the skins, hence why they are also called skincontact wines.

Usually when making white wine, the grapes are pressed to extract the juice from the fruit, leaving the skins and seeds behind. The white juice is collected into vats and then fermented.

Orange wine is also made from white wine grapes, but instead of pressing the juice out and away from the skins and seeds, the juice is fermented with them to give them their pigment and some tannin. The fermenting juice is then left alone anywhere from a few days to a year. As mentioned, this process is similar to rosé wine, which is made with red grapes that sit on their skins for only a few hours.

Bon Appetit’s wine writer, Marissa Ross, a couple of years back, had a lot on her mind when she railed against “orange wine”—at length!

“Based on studies I’ve accidentally conducted by talking with strangers about wine, I have noticed a disturbing new trend.

Like red and white and rosé before it, people have begun to use the color orange to define and judge wines. People seem to either love “orange wine” or hate “orange wine” but also don’t seem to understand what “orange wine” is. They know that it’s “natural” and “cool” and apparently that’s what’s important (I guess?). I had a guy recently tell me he “only drinks orange wine” and would love for me to teach him about “orange varieties.” This guy proceeded to laugh in my face when I said that any white-wine grape can be used to make orange wine.

“I’m not saying you’d ever be that guy, but I also don’t want you to ever be that guy.

That guy is the worst. Not only was he rude and wrong, but why in the world would you ever want to only drink one shade of wine?!

“Orange” isn’t a type of grape or winemaking technique. It’s a color! And it’s only one color in the vast style, and color spectrum, of skincontact wines.

“Skin-contact wines are white wines made like red wines. They ferment with the grape skins, which give wine its color. Depending on how long the juice ferments with the skins—anywhere from a few hours to many months—skin-contact wines can range in color from golden-straw yellow to vibrant amber to Tony the Tiger orange. The time with the skins also gives these wines more red wine characteristics, like bigger body and more tannin, while maintaining the acidity of a white wine. The longer the skins hang with the juice, the bigger and bolder the wine. You can end up with lighter skin-contact wines whose taste is reminiscent of the Jura’s oxidative white wines, with notes of bruised apple all the way to dirty

“This is why the term “orange wine” as a category needs to die. I know, a bold statement coming from a woman who has a section in a published book with her name on it literally titled “Orange Wines.” Trust me, I’d take it back if I could, along with that trip to Tijuana on 'shrooms, but the term “orange wine” is limiting you as a wine drinker. It’s locking you into a color, and since skin-contact wines can be made with any white wine grape and use any winemaking technique, orange-hued wines can vary wildly. You may love a bright-orange Trebbiano but find the same colored Pinot Grigio to be overpowering and too tannic. But asking for a “skin-contact wine” opens you up to a world of colors, flavors, and possibilities you may never have otherwise experienced.”

So there you have it! The colorful term has become evanescent and gone from our vino vocabulary to the stodgy “skin-contact wine” moniker. Whaddya gonna do?

Just the other day, I tasted (pardon my language) the orange wine 2020 New Noir from Maison Noir, an Oregon wine company, “Founded by sommelier André Hueston Mack in 2007, that incorporates a trademark attitude and personal perspective on wine subculture.

The wines are unique and distinctive garage wines, initially created for some of the New York's best restaurants for whom Mack was a sommelier, and now the wines are available nationwide.”

The winery’s technical notes on the 2020 New Noir: “A skin contact “Northwest Edelzwicker” of sorts, a diabolical blend of 50% Gewurztraminer, 28% Pinot Gris, 12% Riesling, 5% Muscat, and 5% Pinot Blanc: Stone fruit potpourri, racy acidity with a sprinkle of molten salt!”

With delicious notes of mild honey, nuts, stone fruits and dried flowers, I really enjoyed the wine and I’ll be serving it up during the holidays. The 2020 New Noir (around $25) was just recently released and will be showing up at your favorite wine shop soon. Indeed, call them up and ask them to get it in asap! Cheers! WHAT ARE THE COMMON MISTAKES ON KETO? (PART 1)

here are many common mistakes when starting Keto but here are a few I see quite often in my coaching practice that causes individuals to be frustrated and doubtful that they are doing Keto wrong or that they should be getting better results.

At this point they are considering giving up because they simply don’t know what to do next. They can’t seem to find the answers they are looking for online.

As a coach, I believe that keto coaches should make keto work for you.. instead of making YOU work for keto? There are always solutions with Keto no matter what the situation. Just don’t give up. To give you hope and encouragement here are a few common examples and how with nuanced application they can changed so that Keto is done properly, safely and with increased and faster results!

What are the most common mistakes people do when starting a keto diet? And, how can beginners avoid them.

They aren't sure what macros are or how to factor them into their new diet.

Let’s break this one down and simplify it.

First, we must know what Keto is. It’s High/ Healthy Fat, Moderate Protein and Low Carb.

Keto is often mistaken as a low carb diet or like Atkins. There is a difference, and this is what makes Keto more effective for faster weight loss and improving overall health. A macro is simply how many carbs, fats and proteins are you eating per day. Each week, there is more to learn about Keto and macros but here’s where I start every client: CARBS - Start with 30-total carbs daily.

Keeping your carbs low is especially important to fast-track your results.

PROTEIN – Daily protein intake should be moderate, and it makes Keto easier if you choose the fattiest cuts of nutrient dense meat.

It’s a win-win. You get protein, plenty of fat and you’ll find the protein keeps you full. To figure your daily allotment of protein take half your body weight and make that your goal for the number of grams needed per day.

FAT – Think Fat First. Plan your meal around fat and then add your other foods. This is a mistake everyone makes when they start Keto, and they don’t get enough fat. This formula puts you into ketosis. Think of fat as the lever that opens the door to your weight loss. Eat LOTS of healthy saturated and unsaturated fat -Butter, Olive Oil, Avocado Oil, Coconut Oil, Mayonnaise, Coconut butter, avocado, nut butter, nuts, etc.) Be sure to enjoy every single bite ;) How much fat to start? At least 50% more

fat than protein. This will be adjusted as you go along but 50% is a good starting point.

They don't realize that even though cheese/dairy is Keto that it stalls weight loss.

This may seem daunting at first because we love dairy…especially cheese. Dairy causes inflammation and stalls weight loss. Here’s a great test. Eliminate it for a minimum of 2 weeks. Weigh yourself and have dairy 3 x in one day. Weigh yourself the next day and if you are heavier, it’ not fat that’s showing on the scale, it's water retention. Removing dairy has huge health benefits. It’s also an important tool to break weight loss stalls at any point in your keto diet.

They count net carbs and not TOTAL carbs - this is one of the biggest game changers a person can make for a well-rounded Keto diet.

Most people on a keto diet count “net carbs,” which is total carbs minus fiber and sugar alcohols. With this approach they’re severely slowing their progress. And, if you have to deduct fiber or sugar alcohols it’s mostly likely someone wants to sell you a Keto product. Go for the win and better results with TOTAL carbs and always read your labels.

They don't understand the importance of using an app to track foods. This just isn’t all about macros but as an accountability and learning tool as well.

Compatibility with X10 Backward compatibility is most commonly used to describe new devices that operate with older X10 systems. o you know how fast your internet connection speed is? If you have Spectrum highspeed broadband, the speed varies based on local traffic during the day as well as which level of service you purchase. I track my service to be 250Mps (Megabytes per second) through their highest speed offering and 33Mbps through their slower fare.

The Speedtest Global Index gathered data from around the world to determine which parts of the world have the best internet service. As we all learned during the pandemic, access to reliable, high-speed internet is critical to everyday life in 2021 Using my business as an example, all files are securely stored in the cloud. This means that my records are backed up everyday on multiple servers. In the event of a cyberattack, records can be recreated from redundant backups stored off premises. While I can get hacked like every business or computer user, by keeping nothing on local devices, I reduce the likelihood of a disruptive event.

Since most of us prefer to work from home versus an office, our phone system is in the cloud as well. One of us can answer the phone from our computer and immediately re-route the call to a colleague 10 or 1000 miles away in less than one second.

According to BroadBandNow.com , the fastest internet in the United States is a town of less than 1,000 residents in Boydton, Virginia. This city clocks in with a 3,267Mbps or 13 times faster than us. near Long Beach and the critical ports, Half Moon Bay and Millbrae are the fastest on the West Coast at 925mbps.

Ladera Ranch has the best speed of any city within two hours of the desert at 700mbps.

According to SpeedTest, Singapore has the fastest average speed at 262 Mbps followed closely by Hong Kong at 254 Mbps.

The United States ranks 12th in the world at 199Mbps. Countries with better averages include France (202), Chile (210), South Korea (217), Thailand (221) and Switzerland (222).

As it relates to cell phone speeds, the United States is sadly in 17th place at 96Mbps.

Canada is a bit behind at 88Mbps. Both North American cities are well the United Arab Emirates with twice our speed or 196Mbps.

South Korea is second at 192Mps followed by Norway 174, China 163 and Australia 127.

It should be no surprise that some of the poorest or most politically insecure countries in the world have the worst internet and cell phone coverage.

By far, Cuba has the weakest internet at 4Mbps. I would guess that this equates to the speeds we were getting in the early days of dial-up service where households were adding land lines at a rapid rate. Twenty-five years later and most American homes have no land lines. Amongst the larger countries,

The weakest cell phone coverage is summer-spot Afghanistan at 7.2Mbps, slightly worse than Palestine at 7.57Mbps.

With a population that exceeds 1 billion, India is surprisingly low on the list at 17.9Mbps placing 127th amongst 137 ranked countries.

If the United States is to maintain above average wage levels in comparison with the rest of the world, we need a better educated workforce with access to the fastest communications tools. Anything less and we disadvantage our country in an increasingly competitive world.

feel terrible when potential client’s call wanting a legal answer over the phone and ask me to represent them... and I can NOT accept their cases. I know they would not expect a doctor or contractor to diagnose or give a bid without meeting the patient or customer in person but somehow a lawyer is often thought of differently.

It makes me sick when I can’t accept a civil case of someone in need, and it is often hard for most callers to understand why. At The Law Office of Dale Gribow our focus is on successfully resolving our client’s civil and criminal problems.

On all civil litigation we are concerned with our client being able to “stay in the game” because of their inferior financial situation, compared to the other party. Other than with a contingency accident case, most civil cases are handled… only on an hourly. That can be very expensive and I do not want to accept a case where we win but the costs of litigation are so great that the client does not receive a happy result. I would rather reject those cases then bill the client thousands of dollars and then not have a happy client.

Therefore I ask each potential hourly client, “Who has more money... you or the other party?” The last thing we want is to start litigating a good case and then have our client tell us they have to fold their cards and drop the case because they can no longer afford the litigation. If one party has more money, and knows it, they often “paper” the other side with motions and appeals etc.

Unfortunately the less affluent client cannot “stay in the game”.

wealth. If a lawyer takes a case to trial and wins, can he collect? If there is insurance there is no problem. However, many cases don’t involve insurance. Thus, the other party would have to pay out of their own assets.

Now after winning at trial the lawyer has to worry about collecting money for the client and him/her self.

If that happens the lawyer is in the same position as if there was an agreed amount owing and the other side is just not paying.

The defendant can skip town, hide assets or file Bankruptcy…………If you can’t find money now, one can always renew the judgement every 10 years.

Another consideration is whether our client has a prior Felony record, as the judge will issue a jury instruction that the jury can decide how much credence to give to the testimony of a convicted felon. With all civil litigation cases it is also important whether the client has a history of suing people or being sued. Of course with any accident case I need to know if the prospective client has preexisting injuries to the same area via an auto accident, slip and fall or sports injury etc.

In addition, with all civil cases, we must consider whether the client contacted us in a timely manner and whether they had been talking to the lawyer or adjuster for the other side. If so, we will never know what the client said OR WHAT THE OTHER PARTY THOUGHT s/he heard my client say. That is how a lawyer gets blindsided at trial.

Throughout my career, a large amount of my practice has been collecting compensation for accident victims, contract disputes

and real estate issues. Accident victim’s compensation is more difficult today because of new insurance company policies of denying and delaying.

Today it is not uncommon for an insurance company to offer $6,000 when the victim has a medical bill of $9,000 and clear liability. If a lawyer accepts that amount and pays most of the accrued bills there would be no money left for the victim or the lawyer. We do not want to accept a case when we know our client will not be happy and could be a victim twice. Thus we reject many small soft tissue cases!

If we decide to go to trial, the costs dramatically increase. It can take between $15,000 to $50,000 to pay for court costs, investigation and expert witness testimony on a soft tissue case. The lawyer, client and witnesses all increase the time spent preparing for trial. Unfortunately the client often has to wait several years for the case to get to trial because of California’s court cutbacks and the challenges with Covid.

I hope this missive helps you to understand why it is not always in the client’s best interest to take a case to trial. This is another reason to not accept a case.

oday I would like to discuss how to titrate your cannabis medication when you have trauma, scheduled operations, muscle strains from gardening, washing your vehicle, or any other painful experience coming from normal activities of daily living.

It is important to have some chemistry discussion first. Whenever there is trauma to tissues, whether it is bone tissue, gums, muscle tissue, or skin tissue, the normal physiological response is inflammation. Inflammatory occurs when tissues are injured by bacteria, trauma, toxins, heat, or any other cause. The endocannabinoid system recognizes the body is out of balance and immediately activates the cannabidiol (CBD) receptors in all of our tissues to trigger the release of chemicals including histamine, bradykinin, and prostaglandins. These chemicals cause blood vessels to leak fluid into the tissues, causing swelling and pain from the rise in blood flow that is not normally present bringing the body’s return to homeostasis.

CBD’s main function is reducing inflammation. The immediate response is to grab some delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) as THC’s main function is reducing pain.

But that would not be the best response.

Why, because the inflammation needs to be reduced first. So, the first thing to do whenever there is trauma is to take a dose of pure marijuana/cannabis type CBD or hemp CBD, not the CBD you get from Amazon.

Dosing is dependent on whether you are new to cannabis or already taking cannabis for a chronic medical problem. The novice will start with 10mg and up the dose by 10mg every hour until you find relief. The chronic user of cannabis may have to increase the dose to 40-60mg depending on the trauma.

Basic elevation of a limb will facilitate the draining of the blood flow also. It may require bedrest if the trauma is from a concussion or any upper-body injury. A 30:1 (CBD:THC) product is preferred or a hemp full spectrum CBD that also has cannabigerol (CBG). Having a CBD product in your medicine cabinet for future use is an excellent preventive measure.

The reason to avoid Amazon products is they are isolates produced in a lab that have unknown extraction methods and or additives when processed. Synthetic CBD isolates from products on Amazon are not the

same purity as the artisanal cannabis productmakers, who craft full-spectrum mixtures of THC and CBD with vivid terpene profiles and other embellishments that imbue the whole plant matrix with unique qualities that can never be fully replicated in a lab.

An anecdotal example is my own use of CBD after having a hammer toe repaired on my left foot. I am a chronic user of cannabis for back pain. My physician gave me a prescription for Vicodin postoperatively. An operation or a bone fracture is acute pain. It is ok to use an opiate for acute pain for the first 24 hrs. postop. Then I switched to 40mg of (CBD:CBG) twice a day with an extra dose when I was awakened during the night with pain.

Leg elevation and ice are paramount with any lower extremity trauma to reduce the dependent edema. After four days I was back to my normal dose of cannabis prior to my operation. I did not need the THC after the third day.

My products came from two dispensaries.

The first is “healing essence” licensed dispensary and the second is from Dr. Sulak’s dispensary that produces Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) the original raw form of CBD. CBDA is for those who have tried CBD in moderate to considerable amounts (25-50mg) and have been unsatisfied with the results. I leave you with this quote: When asked to compare the synergistic entourage effect of botanical cannabis with a cocktail of isolates concocted by biotechnicians, Dr. Ethan Russo of CReDO Science put it this way: “What would you rather have? Fresh squeezed organic orange juice or Tang?”

One term the Finns use for the person they love is kulta, which means gold. I hope you’ll be inspired by these words to experiment with new nicknames and titles for the allies you care for. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The band Creedence Clearwater Revival, led by Gemini musician John Fogerty, achieved tremendous success with their rollicking sound and socially conscious lyrics. They sold 33 million records worldwide. In 1970, they were the best-selling band on the planet, exceeding even the Beatles. And yet, the band endured for just over four years. I foresee the possibility of a comparable phenomenon in your life during the coming months. Something that may not last forever will ultimately generate potent, long-term benefits.

It’s high time to boldly claim how utterly unique you are—to be full of reasonable pride about the fact that you have special qualities that no one in history has ever had. I

adopted my dog Scarlet O’Hara from the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in 2009, and learned she was rescued in a raid by county animal control. She was in a so called “rescue” in Hemet called Best Buddies.

There were 240 small dogs inside the home, and they were rarely let outside to relieve themselves.

Back then I didn’t know any of the local wonderful trainers, and it took almost a year to completely housetrain Scarlet. Scarlet preferred luxurious locations, squatting just inside the door at Between the Sheets, a highend shop on El Paseo street in Palm Desert.

Finally, a baby gate and a tiled floor bathroom did the trick when I was at work. A dog rarely goes inside a small space which becomes their “den”.

Here are a few things I’ve learned after rescuing and rehoming thousands of

homeless dogs. Puppies need to relieve themselves more frequently (just like human babies!). They need to be taken outdoors at least 5 to 8 times a day. Large size dogs, even those who were “outdoor only” in their first home, usually become house trained after one or no accidents indoors. Select a dog that fits your home and lifestyle. You can easily teach your dog to relieve himself outside by keeping a close eye, recognizing his signals, and rewarding his good behavior.

1. Don’t allow a new pet to wander unsupervised throughout your home. Keep him confined to a small area when you can’t closely observe him.

2. When he sniffs the ground or circles around, quickly and calmly take him outdoors.

Try to have several spots in your yard where you like him to eliminate.

3. Be consistent. Feed your dog a

measured amount of food at the same times daily. Pick up the bowl when he stops eating or walks away.

4. Most dogs, especially puppies, eliminate after eating, drinking, playing, resting, sleeping, or being confined. Five to thirty minutes after these activities, take them outdoors to your yard or for a walk outside if you have no yard.

5. Use a verbal cue such as “Go Potty” to associate your dog’s brain with elimination.

6. Quietly praise your dog when he begins to go.

7. As soon as he completes the job, enthusiastically praise him, pet him, and reward with a food treat immediately.

8. Once your pup gets into the routine, reward with praise “Good girl”, and give treats only intermittently.

9. Since you cannot watch your new dog every minute indoors, put him on a 6-8 foot leash and hook the handle underneath a heavy chair leg. He won’t go in his immediate area.

10. If your dog has an accident inside the home, DO NOT scold the dog but rather quietly cleanup and deodorize the soiled area.

This will teach him to hide and eliminate when you are not present.

11. There is lots of house training advice online. Common sense tells us, let him go outside first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

12. Puppy pads may work as a last resort for a young puppy. Put a dab of urine on the pad to help him make the connection.

Local dog trainer Valerie Masi with Best Paw Forward advises, “Crate training is one of the best ways to potty train your puppy.

The crate helps train the puppy to hold it till he goes outside. Set a feeding schedule for the same time each day. This helps your pup develop a potty schedule. Consistency is the key to success!” Make sure your crate is large enough for your dog to stand up and turn around comfortably. Do not crate a dog for more than 3-4 hours during the day. At first you may need to crate him overnight but keep him crated nearby in your bedroom.
