t’s that special creepy time of year when thoughts of witches, vampires and ghosts fill the imagination and ghouls come out to play. And if you live in the Coachella Valley, it’s also when the most anticipated party of the year takes place, BB Ingle’s Annual Halloween Bash! BB’s parties are legendary, and have been entertaining desert party goers for decades. His Halloween parties in particular are enormously popular, giving attendees the chance to shed their everyday persona and dress up as whatever they want to for a night of decadent freaky fun. His parties are epic, and bring people from not only the desert area, but all over southern California to attend. Last year’s event, held at the Hard Rock hotel was enormous, bringing out well over 3,000 people to play. The costumes ranged from the demur, to over the top, with even a full-fledged Genie cruising around on his very own magic carpet willing to take pictures with anyone that would ask. You can probably find just about any costume at BB’s party; it is a coveted event that people look forward to, an event that stimulates all the senses. BB must have been born to bring people together, starting his career as a leader in social gatherings back in the 80’s when he and a few others founded BB O’Briens. The night spot was a constant in desert nightlife, and after its closure, BB began throwing special holiday/event parties earning him the Master of Events and Godfather of parties title that he has today. BB is also the 3 time winner of CV Weekly’s “Promoter of the Year” Award. This year BB’s 31st Annual Halloween bash, will take place on two nights; Friday

October 30th and Saturday, Halloween night, October 31, and will be held again at the Hard Rock Hotel in downtown Palm Springs. The Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs boasts all of the flash and glamour affiliated with the famous chain. Amenities at the venue include swanky lounges (lobby & poolside), incredible dining, spa services and hip luxury accommodations all dripping with the cool vibe that is part of the Hard Rock brand. The Hard Rock Hotel, which started back in 1971, sets its goals on bringing people together to party up a storm, it’s a shared goal that BB has been an advocate of all along, “I’m excited to have the big bash at the Hard Rock again this year!” said BB. The Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs and BB’s 31st Annual Halloween Bash is a perfect match! The mega party, which is being produced by Ray Phillips and RSP Productions, will be spread out around the hotel, incorporating the elaborate underground ballroom, and poolside area. Three floors and six rooms of entertainment include heart pumping music from DJ’s: Ray Phillips, Alf Alpha, Anwaar, Aaron C, Courtland, JF//Discord, Tommy O’Connor, DJ Shasta, MC Esjay, Deep Ones and from Insomniac, Andre Paul Ryan,

plus others. The party will also feature the classic rock band Dude Jones performing poolside. Food will be available through hotel outlets and there will be plenty of bars to accommodate thirsty hell raisers. Halloween has long been a holiday for kids to dress up, knock on stranger’s doors and extort candy (give me a treat or else). But the holiday has evolved into a much needed adult break from reality as well. It’s a night of fantasy, scares, dares, tricks and treats. And for us living in the desert, we have been lucky to have the “Pied Piper” of parties in our midst to throw exciting, edgy Halloween events every year. With BB’s 31st Annual Halloween Bash at the Hard Rock Hotel in Palm Springs, it is certain that there will be plenty of treats for us all….and maybe a scary trick or two. Happy Halloween! The party goes from 8pm to 2am and guests must be 21 or older to enter. Tickets are priced at $30 per person in advance for general admission online at PartywithBB. com. Tickets are also available at: Skitzo Kitty, Tg Tattoo, Halloween Gear, Sensuality, Vapor Door, and Penny Lane Boutique. For tickets visit www.partywithBB.com or call 760-880-1059

THE WIND OF HEAVEN: BRINgING FILM PRODUCTION TO RIVERSIDE COUNTY

I

nternational award winning movie director Stephen Savage was all set to shoot his sixth feature film, an epic modern western entitled “The Wind Of Heaven”, in Montana in early 2016, when he was called to a meeting of the newly established Riverside County Film Office to find out what it would take to convince Savage and his producers to film the entire project in Riverside County. After all, Savage is a native Southern Californian, with homes in both Rancho Mirage and Idyllwild, as well as being the founder and director of the Idyllwild International Film Festival, and having been the director hired in 2008 by the Palm Springs Bureau Of Tourism to create five unique travel films for The Travel Channel, along with the fact that Savage’s film “Cosmic Radio” starring Michael Madsen and Daryl Hannah, was the sleeper hit of the 2008 Palm Springs International Film Festival in 2008, it seemed only logical that he should be working locally as much as possible to support and promote filmmaking in the Inland Empire. And whatever was said at that meeting seemed to do the trick, as Savage has now committed to shooting the vast majority of his new film in the Garner Valley area near Idyllwild, as well as in the Coachella Valley, beginning in January. The Wind Of Heaven is the story of a young Marine Officer returning home from Afghanistan with the full intent of taking over the family cattle business formally run by his now deceased father. But the returning warrior seems almost crippled by the onset of PTSD, and his mother is at a loss as to how to help him regain the man he was before heading off to war. After attempts by veterans administration doctors fail to help, the young man is introduced to a Native American Spirit Healer, whose track

record helping soldiers return to civilian life is something of a phenomenon. It is only through the Native man’s understanding, and the soldiers connection to a wild mustang stallion at the head of a large herd of roaming horses, that the soldier begins to find himself once again able to cope with the realities of what he has been through, and how best to return to a normal way of life. With an all-star cast that includes Jim Beaver (“Deadwood”, “Supernatural”), Mark Boone Jr (“Sons Of Anarchy”, “Batman Begins”), Kristoff St. John (Young & the Restless), Tantoo Cardinal (“Dances With Wolves”, “Legends Of The Fall”), the voice of Disney’s “Pocahontas” and “Longmire” star Irene Bedard, and Joanna Krupa (“Dancing With The Stars”, “Planet Of The Apes”), among others, The Wind Of Heaven is destined to be one of the most talked about western themed movies in years upon its release in 2017. Without a doubt, the Coachella Valley and the mountains surrounding it are a perfect fit for a film project such as this, and as the film has been officially green lit for production this coming winter and spring, we can all look forward to a local premiere sometime in the next year or so. You can check out more about this exciting new film on the web site: thewindofheaven.com.

Palm Springs Candidate for Mayor, Bob Weinstein and Desert Hot Springs Candidates for City Council, Richard Duffle and Asia Horton, did not respond to the CVW requests. CVW thanks the candidates who did share their interests and community vision. As a member of the media, CVW recognizes the commitment and sacrifice that public service requires and wishes the candidates best of luck.

didn’t spend much time speaking with musician and desert music scene veteran, Mark Gregg, before I realized that he has a lot more going for him besides what he can do with a guitar. Trust me on this one, people…...he definitely knows what he is doing with a guitar. In addition to sharing stages with some of the most iconic musical acts of our time, the frontman of, “Palm Springs’ #1 rock and roll party band, Dude Jones,” is also an inventor and entrepreneur. He is the owner of Mangus Innovations LLC, maker of the Ultimate Attenuator and the Silverbucking line of vintage style humbucking pickups. In layman’s terms, Mark is the inventor of specialized, mechanical guitar components that are utilized by musicians internationally. Mark Gregg the entrepreneur is on the brink of opening an exciting new restaurant/ club/concert venue in Palm Springs within the next few weeks. With a top-of-the-line stage and sound set-up combined with a swanky, hip environment, WTF is slated to be one of the premier entertainment destinations in the valley. Stay tuned to CV Weekly for more on WTF in future issues. My first memory of Gregg is from some years back when I was a 21 year-old server at the Village Pub in Palm Springs. As the bar’s headliner and entertainment director for over a decade and half, he became a downtown staple and accumulated the experience to know what it takes to rock the crowds. In all actuality, he has been making music and entertaining for most of his life and he has a list of over 2,000 songs in his repertoire to cover just about anyone’s taste.

Continuing his reign as the king of downtown entertainment, you can check out Gregg’s performances every Thursday at Sullivan’s Steakhouse and Fridays at Palm Canyon Roadhouse. Also, Dude Jones and special guests will be featured at B.B’s Annual Halloween Bash on the 31st at the Hard Rock Hotel. Other than that, according to Gregg he usually, “...splits Saturdays between crime-fighting and various gigs.” This past weekend, Gregg joined a crew that included some of the Coachella Valley’s most popular musical artists at Schmidy’s Tavern for the 8th Annual Concert for Autism which was a 2 day, all-ages event with the purpose of raising funds for Lumpy’s Foundation for Autism. Gregg: I am very optimistic about the growth of Palm Springs in particular and the eclectic scenes emerging as a result. I also enjoy the spirit of respect and cooperation amongst valley artists and it all becomes very evident when we come together for worthy events such as this. I have family members on the Autisim spectrum so I was very happy to perform at this charity concert. Whether we are talking music, business, or life in general, Mark Gregg is a guy full of creativity and ambition who is going fullspeed ahead with no intentions of slowing down. He is a friend to us at CV Weekly and to the desert in general and for those reasons we intend on keeping you posted on what he has planned for us all. ultimateattenuator.com facebook.com/mark.gregg soundcloud.com/mark-gregg-1

Bart Lounge to Host 80’s Costume Party

O

ne of the newest, and trendiest, places in the Coachella Valley is Bart Lounge in Cathedral City. Located just above Upper Crust Pizza, if the delicious smell of a large pepperoni with extra cheese is not enough to draw you in, some of the most fun, and original, events found in the Valley certainly will. From scary movie nights to Mortal Combat X tournaments, owner Michael Murphy has put his stamp on the local scene with his outside-thebox ideas and fun events. Having opened less than six months ago, Murphy has seen steady increases in numbers and overall popularity. “People have been amazed with our attendance during off season,” Murphy said. Much of that, one must believe, is due to the atmosphere created by Murphy. “I grew up with things like The Simpsons, Tim Burton, and NickToons,” Murphy stated, “so I’m not necessarily trying to make something artsier than other bars or nightclubs, but rather create an environment that my generation can connect, respond to, and feel comfortable in.” Comfortable is a great word to describe the atmosphere at Bart, and anyone who has frequented the establishment, I imagine, would have to agree. With soft lighting paired perfectly with the vintage Simpsons arcade game and art depicting characters one would have to imagine jumped straight out of Tim Burton’s imagination, Bart creates an original atmosphere one can be both amused and entertained by while feeling comfortable and relaxed. However, relaxed is not what Murphy will be striving for this Friday, October 23rd. This is the date of Bart’s 80s costume party and the place is sure to be rocking. As Murphy stated, his whole goal was to “create a fun, themed party that no one will remember.” The party’s soundtrack will be provided by one of Murphy’s favorite DJs, Noemi Rodriguez, known more commonly by her stage name DJ Sugarfree, who will be transporting party-goers back to the 80s all night. “I like to focus on playing hit songs from the 80’s

that I know people will definitely be familiar with. I want them to get that good feel of the 80’s as if they are traveling back in time. To me, that’s special,” Sugarfree said. And there is sure to be music for every fan of the 80s who attends. From pop to rock, new wave to darkwave, and even some Spanish rock and popular songs from 80s movie classics mixed in for good measure, Sugarfee plans on playing it all in order to appeal to the wide range of musical tastes sure to show up. But do not be surprised if the mood gets a little dark. After all, it is Halloween. “Me and Michael [Murphy] are more into darker genres. I think it’s perfect for the setting at Bart and of course for Halloween,” Sugarfree said. So if you love the 80s, and more specifically the music from it, this is a party you will not want to miss. “I believe anyone who loves 80’s music will be excited for a night dedicated to this awesome decade,” Sugarfree said. “There were just so many amazing bands back in the day and so many great films which people will definitely think about when they hear a song from their soundtrack.” And for those of you who love to take advantage of a holiday which allows one to dress up in ridiculous outfits, Bart lounge has got you covered as well. A $200 reward will be given to the attendee with the best 80s costume. So put on your Michael Jackson glove, pull that shirt off of one of your shoulders, and dust off those neon leggings and head on over to Bart this Friday night. The party starts at 9 P.M. with costume judging at 1 A.M and music all night long by DJ Sugarfree. If you like what you experience at Bart, be sure to check out their Facebook page at facebook.com/bartlounge for more fun and exciting events. And if you like the music you hear (which we all know you will), be sure to give some love to the DJ. Sugarfree will be playing again at Bart on October 31st, as well as at the Date Shed on November 13th and at Synergy Musical Festival on November 14th.

John Carey

I

By patte purcell

t’s always interesting to me to interview some of our local talent. You just don’t know what you’ve got sometimes. There is a gentleman that has played in the desert for many years. His name is John Carey and his first gig was with the Chi Lites. As a child, his mom was a singer and that is who inspired him to play music. At 8 years old his cousin who had guitars, basses, and drums turned him onto playing the guitar. Then he expanded to bass and piano. He never looked back. As a teenager he played in local bands. His first major gig was the Chi Lites where he spent almost 2 years. He left to do more rhythm and blues with a band he put together in Chicago. He first landed in San Bernadino, CA in 1983 and then eased his way into the desert when he was hired to play at the Hyatt in Palm Springs 5 nights a week. One of his friends gave him his condo to use so he moved here fulltime. Another player, Theo Copley, who was with the T Connection on Capital Records and had numerous top 10 records decided to team up with John and form ‘The Smooth Brothers’. They were the originators of smooth jazz locally in the desert. They’ve been together almost 20 years and continue to play a full schedule. On Thursdays they play at one of Palm Springs favorite live venues, Shanghai Reds, Wednesdays they are at the Fisherman’s Market in Palm Desert, and Fridays and Saturdays they play in La Quinta at Fisherman’s Market. Along with his gigs as The Smooth Brothers he also performs with his beautiful wife Gina who he met 7 years ago. Their romantic story began when they met at Hip Kitty where he was part of the house band. She came in with a friend and gave him a CD. His reaction was ‘wow’. He was putting together a corporate band of 12 people and asked her to audition. As

band politics had it the others didn’t want another vocalist so he had to break the news to her that she didn’t get the job. He waited a couple of days afterwards and then asked her out. They dated for 2 years before he ‘won her over’ and proposed. They just celebrated their 5th anniversary. John just had a serious health scare when he woke up to chest pains. He was not getting enough blood to his heart so they have installed a pace maker. I’m happy to report he’s doing better and is resuming his schedule. When I asked John about his goals he told me he is writing, composing, and producing. He and Gina each have separate studios that they work in at their home. He produced a number 1 record for Gina in the UK last year. He’s currently writing a screenplay; a fiction about a meet up between Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn. He plans to have it out in 2016 and is looking forward to playing the role of Jimi Hendrix. He currently teaches music lessons to those that are interested. When I asked for a message to his fans he said ‘just love one another’. You can reach John at Johncareyinfo@gmail.com or his website at JohnCarey.net

Local Music Spotlight Mikey Doling of Snot - A Rock Star with Desert Roots

T

wenty years ago, Indio High School alumni Mikey Doling and his buddy, the late, great, Lynn Strait were 20-somethings crashing in a squatter house in Santa Barbara when they formed a metal/ punk/hardcore band that would almost immediately take the LA club scene by storm. Within a couple of years, Snot was signed by a major record label, shooting videos for MTV, touring the US with some of the biggest bands of the era and had earned a coveted slot on the Ozzfest tour. As youngsters who were really just starting to get their rock-star feet wet in the fame pool, they were fully aware that they were living the dream. Doling: “I started Snot with a four-track, a guitar and a Dr. Rhythm drum-machine. I was writing songs and had already come up with the name before I had the band. I met Lynn before the other guys and eventually we were both living in the squatter house.” Doling chuckles: “We were totally broke and punk-rock. We would laugh at each other when one of us scraped together enough change for a Jumbo-Jack and the rest of us would ask if it had cheese on it. We were really poor.” Doling continues: “Initially it was Lynn Strait and me. We had some other guys that didn’t work out so we had to let them go. We were looking for replacements and my buddy Shannon Larkin who is the drummer for Ugly Kid Joe knew these three guys on the east coast and introduced us. It was a done-deal pretty quickly. They moved out to California

10

and together we became Snot. Those guys were my bassist John (Tumor) Fahnestock, drummer Jamie Miller and guitarist Sonny Mayo.” The time-span between wondering where their next meal was going to come from to becoming friends with people they previously idolized was unusually brief. It seemed as though they were just starting to get comfortable with their new-found place on top of the world, when they were jolted by the harshest blow any of them had ever received. On December 11th, 1998 a tragic car accident took the life of Snot’s beloved lead-vocalist/frontman, Lynn Strait. Lost and overcome with grief, Doling and the guys felt that, without Strait, there was no Snot. At the time they could not conceive of continuing without him and so, they made the decision to bury the band along with their beloved friend. All four remaining members continued on in careers as professional musicians separately, touring and recording with other major bands over the years as well as pursuing business ventures. It wasn’t until 2013 that Doling, who maintains residences in Tokyo and La Quinta, Ca. decided to hit up his Snot-mates to see if they were down to give it another go. Lucky for the fans, they obliged. Doling: “It took us 15 years to recover from Lynn’s passing. It was sort of like, at some point we looked at each other as friends and thought, ‘Hey there’s still four of us left.’ I thought about how much I enjoy playing with these guys and how Lynn would have wanted us to continue on a long time ago so, I decided to call each one of them and ask, ‘Shouldn’t we get back together?’ And here we are…….back together with our new addition. We recently finished two tours in Europe, one in the US and we are going to Australia next month. The Australian shows are already completely sold out and they had to add dates. We will also be touring in South America and have some shows planned with Slipknot.” Sporting a passionate, international fanbase that never disappeared along with a gifted and charismatic new front-man, Snot has thrown it into high-gear with a new

By esther sanchez album on the way and international tour dates that are selling out as quickly as they are scheduled. The best part of it all as far as I’m concerned is that they are warming up for their big upcoming concerts with a show right here in the valley. On October 22nd, Snot will be performing at Schmidy’s Tavern in Palm Desert and I foresee a huge clean-up job for the staff when it’s all over on account of all of the melted faces they will have to mop up. As far as the new album is concerned, the band hopes it will not only reignite and satisfy established fans, but attract a brand new generation of Snot virgins. Recently, they have been writing and recording at Dead End Studio in Palm Desert, which is owned and operated by Doling’s “best friend since High School,” and well-respected sound-engineer, Brad Garrow. Several friends of mine who have followed Snot since the beginning were beyond jealous when they found out that I was given the opportunity to drop by the studio and hang out while they were doing their thing. When I told them that I got to watch and listen while Snot’s fantastic new vocalist, Carl Bensley, laid down vocals over the instrumental tracks they recorded the previous night, said friends’ heads almost exploded. Doling: “About 10 years ago I was producing for a band called Instinct of Aggression and Carl was the then, 20 yearold singer for that band. He has also been in some other bands over the years including one called Consume the Fire. I always loved the guy. He is a really talented and charismatic performer and genuinely good guy so when I started thinking about bringing in a vocalist for Snot, he came to mind. When I called him and asked him if he was interested in going on tour with Snot he immediately said, ‘yes’ and the rest is history.” When observing Bensley perform it is pretty clear that he was somewhat of a no-brainer choice for Snot. Most any band would be lucky to have him. Beyond his charisma and strong stage-presence, he is most importantly a very strong singer with great range. His vocal abilities are diverse and he keeps it interesting by continuously mixing up singing styles with ease. When Bensley is blowing on that mic you might hear familiar sounds that display grittiness in impressively high octaves that are classically, “metal’......you might also notice him pepper in some soulful, bluesy type notes to string it all together. The recipe works for him and for the band. Considering the fact that his energy oozes with confidence dipped in a big vat of chill, I asked Bensley at what point in his life as a musician did he become comfortable in the role of “frontman”. He hesitated for less than a second before looking at me with an endearing expression that seemed to be somewhat bewildered as to the why anyone would even think to ask such a silly question. Bensley: “I don’t really think there was ever a point…..I have been doing this stuff for most of my life now. I think I just sort of eased into it. I don’t ever really remember feeling

nervous or worried about any of it until I joined up with Snot. That’s only because when you are coming in to a position that once belonged to someone else who was talented and loved by the fans, there will always be people who don’t approve. I can’t let myself worry about that.” Snot has been touring with Bensley for about a year now performing their original songs….songs that were made famous by his beloved predecessor, Lynn Strait. I think that if anyone were to speculate that Snot is somehow attempting to fill the shoes of one man with another, they are missing the point, completely. First of all, their vocal styles are very different from one another, which, in my opinion is a good thing. Most of us would rather see them bring on the best performer they can find for the gig. I think it shows a lot more integrity for the music than the idea behind running around trying desperately to find someone who can do the most spot-on impersonation of Lynn Strait. Lynn loved Snot and would have wanted the music that he was so integral in creating to live on while the band continues to grow and evolve artistically. The new addition to the band helps serve the purpose of breathing life into this incredible thing that Lynn helped create. Clearly, you cannot replace someone who is irreplaceable…but you can try your damndest to honor him by bringing in someone who will do a hell of a job at what they once did while showing tremendous heart and soul for the project as a whole. Combined with brand new music, and a seemingly endless list of upcoming tour dates, it seems obvious to me that the spirit of Snot is alive and kicking and I for one am looking forward to seeing where it takes us. No need to take my word for it. If you want to jump on this train I suggest you head over to Schmidy’s on October 22nd. Also on the bill for that night are local punk rock heroes, Se7en4, whose latest album Let’s Get High and Fight, was produced by Mikey Doling; Doling’s High School friend, Brad Garrow’s band, Brain Vat; and out of towners 1001, and Contortion. Show starts at 8pm and is only $10.

I

t had been a long day already, but energy had to be mustered up to be there for the birthday event of friend and soul brother, Phil Lacombe, CV Weekly’s “Number Two”, second only to print diva and publisher, Tracy Dietlin herself. Some of the valley’s most thundering face-melters were rocking Plan B Live Entertainment & Cocktails hard and heavy in honor of the guy, and neither I nor over 200 people were going to miss saying happy birthday to him. I was familiar with all the bands playing that night, with the exception of one. It was the first performance of the band Se7en4 following a brief sabbatical. After that night, I would never forget them. That was 2 years ago. Thunder god, Steven Hall, was on drums. An absolute work horse, Hall’s athletic style, energy and rhythmic perfection make him as much a front man as any I’ve seen. The same could be said of lead guitarist, “Pinche” Pete Burquez, a guitar player respected by the best of the best. He absolutely owns the stage by the sheer power of his playing revealing decades of discipline and passion toward his craft. On bass is Trevino Martin “DeBajo”. My heart skipped a little, to be honest. I’d seen him play with Hall before on another project and was impressed by his playing as well as his showmanship. Not a single one of these band members has ever had to “posture” or act like a rocker. It is who they are and what they love and they are the definition of authenticity. It would take one hell of a front man to find a place in front of these entities. Enter, Nico Flores, as athletic as they come, and while he can roar with the best of them, this front man can SING. I ain’t gonna lie, this stage was eye candy from a woman’s point of view (not a horrible thing in this industry). But bigger than that, their musicianship, their songs, their drive and

their presence were all encompassing, and there wasn’t a person in the room who was not under their command. Flash forward to today, the men of Se7en4 are still tenaciously at it, business men as much as musicians and performers. They are in the process of carving out their name in every notable venue from Coachella to LA. I had the lucky job of catching up with them and talking about how music has been treating them since I first saw them: Steven Hall: “Se7en4 has been kicking ass in the LA and Sunset Blvd scenes for the past year. It all started with a kick ass album that was produced by Mikey Doling from (SNOT, Channel Zero). In February we sold out our very first show at the World Famous Whisky A GoGo, all on our own. That caught the attention of a few promoters and venue owners, and the rest has been a snowball effect. We’re a little older and wiser now... still like to have a good time, but family and REAL friends come first these days, unlike the old days where it was all about the party.” “We play Loaded, a cool bar in Hollywood on November 20th for the second time. We were asked back due to the fact that we sold that place out as well. We have another show booked on April 21, 2016 at the Whisky A GoGo, directly supporting an undisclosed band that we are not allowed to talk about at the moment. I can say this - it will be another sold out show. Our next goal is to hop on a tour or two in 2016. That’s one thing this band has not had the opportunity to do just yet, and it’s coming!” Nico Flores: “We went through some bass players - really amazing bass players. Phil and Tracy asked us to play their party. We love them and they’ve done so much for us and for everybody really, so when they asked us to play the show, we didn’t tell them we didn’t have a bass player. We just

thought about how we could pull it off. So Steve got a hold of his bass player, Trevino Martin, from his other band, Rippsville City Hall, and he just fit. We took off strong, writing songs and coming out with our album, Let’s Get High and Fight. That album ended up winning, “Album of the Year” at the CV Music Awards. We’ve always valued the support here in the desert, but since, we’ve also gotten a really strong reception in LA. It’s created a bit of a resurgence in us. We’ve been writing a bunch of new songs and feel really good about the future. We’re taking things a bit more seriously these days. Not too serious though, because the ultimate goal is to have fun. But we’ve learned a lot from mistakes in the past. Before, all we could do was think about getting signed. Now, we’ve learned to do things for ourselves - copyright our music, get them out on iTunes, book our own shows, negotiate money and make money for ourselves instead of sitting around for some kind of magical thing to come along.” “Pinche” Pete Burquez: “Just getting the band back together less one guitar player was new for us. But getting a new bass player gave us a new dynamic we were not aware of a couple of years ago. We seemed to have found something musically great

and have stuck to it. Recording our album Let’s Get High and Fight is a big highlight for the band. We had Mikey Doling (Snot, Soulfly, Abloom, Invitro) produce it, and Sterling Winfield (Pantera, Hellyeah) mix it, and Brad Dujmovic engineer the album. It was released ironically on 7/4/2014, so Se7en4 has an official day of the year. Other than that, we’re doing as many shows as we can, and plan on a West Coast tour come 2016. Europe is something we’re looking into as well. Se7en4 is coming to you always, rockin’ and rollin’!”

he Lonely Wild burst on the scene just two years ago, with their magnificent full-length debut, The Sun As It Comes. Critically lauded, it was one of the best albums of 2013, a wild and wooly ride that defied classification. The band was the brain child of Andrew Carroll, (vocals, guitar, bass and percussion) and Ryan Ross, (keyboards piano, harpsichord, melodica, bass, trumpet and vocals.) Near the beginning of the 21st century, Carroll moved to Los Angeles to study music and film. He met Ross at school and the pair hit it off. Their first collaboration was the band, You, Me & Iowa. By 2010, they formed The Lonely Wild. The original line-up also included vocalist Jennifer Talesfore, drummer Edward Cerecedes and guitarist Andrew Schneider. They recorded an EP, Dead End, which was released in 2011. Both Talesfore and Cercedes departed the band. Jessi Williams was recruited to handle vocals, percussion and trumpet and Dave Farina stepped in behind the drum kit. Their first long-player, The Sun As It Comes arrived in 2013. The music was a stunning panorama of influences, encompassing everything from Neil Young to Ennio Morricone. The erudite lyrics explored issues like the Arab Spring, political corruption, greed, Baby Boomer avarice and addiction. The L.A. band immediately went on tour, supporting artists like John Doe, Laura Marling, Dwight Yoakam and Damien Rice. They played tiny clubs like the Echo and Pappy & Harriets as well as well-known festivals like SXSW, First City Festival, Jubilee, Cask & Drum Festival and Echo Park Rising in their adopted home town. They crisscrossed the U.S. and made it up to Canada, the home of maple syrup and minimal gun violence. Now they’re back with their sophomore effort, Chasing White Light. As with The Sun…, all the songs were written by Andrew Carroll. This time out he was heavily

12

influenced by the loss of loved ones and the darker aspects of the human condition. The album opens with the one-two punch of “Snow” and “Hunted.” Cascading rim-shots and a trumpet fanfare provide an overture to “Snow.” Rollicking guitar riffs ride roughshod over a galloping rhythm. The infectious melody is buoyed by the band’s trademark dissonant harmonies. But scratch beneath the shiny surface and the lyrics are a mordant meditation on life after death; “Somehow I’ve always known the dead are not watching my show/It’s just a lie disguised as hope.” The specter of death is ever present on the anvil chorus of “Hunted.” Here the vocals veer between breathless and histrionic, while the melody and instrumentation navigate a series of aural switchbacks. Witnessing the end of life, the “fight or flight” instinct kicks in. “Take me with you when you go, don’t want to face the day alone/Don’t wanna lean on desperate faith to carry me through.” The first song written for the album, “Scar,” is what motivated Carroll to tackle themes of mortality and loss. The track is an accelerated see-saw waltz accented by sweet harpsichord, urgent keys and a stutter-step rhythm. The lyrics reflect back on memories of a long-lost childhood friend who endured hardship and passed away. The tune is suffused with regrets and missed opportunities, “Where was it you had to go, pulling that heavy stone?/Couldn’t we have lightened the load?”

With “Into Their Mouths,” “Free From Harm” and “Funeral” the band is, in the immortal words of Mr. Mojo Risin’ fully “wallowing in the mire.” “Into Their Mouths” is the album’s centerpiece, a Spaghetti Western pastiche anchored by banshee vocals, kinetic time signatures, a swaying string section, mariachi horns and an incendiary guitar solo. The lyrics seem to be the illness actually addressing the body it’s weakening. “I’ll feast on you, devour everything that’s keeping you alive.” “Free From Harm” is propelled by a Punktastic, jackhammer rhythm, keening guitar riffs, along with intertwined violin and cello. The lyrics note that death is compulsory; it’s a part of life. “It’s never time, but we’re bound to our bodies’ slow decline.” “Funeral” is suitably funereal. Hushed keys and a lone voice are quickly supplanted as a rush of voices and instrumentation enter the fray. The stream-of-conscious lyrics ask the unanswerable questions and channel the deep feeling of ennui and emotional torpor people experience during these rituals. “When all the old folks start to cry, Where is my lover?/And all the young folks hold their breath, What will we stand for? I’m just trying not to close my eyes.” The best tracks here are “Running” and “Blunt The Blade.” The former shares some of the grandiosity that characterizes the music of DeVotchKa and Sufjan Stevens. Swirling acoustic arpeggios get the ball rolling. Swoony strings and a breakneck beat propel the action. The cryptic lyrics seem

to be more about life than death, at times directly addressing god. “Did you write the story, are we actors on the stage?” The instrumentation on the latter is spare. Cascading acoustic filigrees dovetail with piano grace notes and violin. Carroll’s tenor is buttressed by the band’s ecclesiastic harmonies. It’s a combo-platter that echoes the pastoral beatitude of Nick Drake along with the breath-taking finesse of Tim Buckley. Other interesting tracks include the two ambient instrumentals, “[Born]” and “[Thrown].” The album concludes with the title track. The melody and instrumentation shares the same spatial elegance as Pink Floyd’s epochal “Us And Them,” but adds ting-ing hi-hat hiccupping rhythm. Aching harmonies and a coruscated guitar solo underscore this aspiration: “All we can hope for really, is to be grateful, is to be necessary, is to be useful.” As the song draws to a close, Carroll only hopes when his time is nigh he has the opportunity to offer this proper goodbye; “Farewell. I love you honey, Gone chasing that little white light/Gone, swimming in the tiny chemicals that make me feel like I got a tunnel straight to heaven, when I die.” Finally, “Echo” finishes the album with a brief acapella coda. On their first full-length, The Sun As It Comes, Andrew Carroll and Ryan Ross handled production chores. For the new album they sought the guidance of producer (and fellow musician), John Vanderslice. Owner of Tiny Telephone Recording Studio, in San Francisco’s Mission District, Vanderslice has produced albums for disparate artists like the Mountain Goats, St. Vincent and Spoon. His studio uses only analog equipment, which Vanderslice has characterized as “sloppy hi-fi.” For this album, he encouraged the band to eschew their demos, in favor of a live approach. They had access to antique instruments, and recorded directly to tape. The whole record radiates a visceral energy. Tackling topics of death, loss and redemption may sound like a fat fucking downer, but the bold melodies and piquant instrumentation keep the proceedings lithe and buoyant. Chasing White Light never flounders in a sea of sadness, on the contrary, it offers a cathartic journey the listener will want to take again and again.

C

hristian Hohmann was born into the art world. Hohmann® Fine Art is the second generation of a family owned business. Galerie Hohmann was established in 1976 in Germany. In 2009, Hohmann® Fine Art opened in Palm Desert California, showcasing the work of contemporary artists who are selected, not only for the depth of their work but also for their commitment to their work. These are two very different concepts that Christian understands well. “Aside from the artists and the artwork we represent, we have our 40 year history, a distinct European background and a great team. My parents founded the gallery in 1976 in Germany. I studied art history and economy to be prepared for this business. I lived in Europe until I was 28 and operated my own galleries in Hamburg and Berlin.” “We have a fantastic team in our German and Palm Desert galleries. While some art dealers do everything by themselves, and I salute them, when it comes to large projects I rely on my team. We recently returned from the Art Silicon Valley, where we had a very prominent exhibition of large paintings by Robert Freimark and large sculptures by jd Hansen and Julian Voss-Andreae. That is not a project you can do on your own.” This year Christian was asked to be the sole juror for Palm Springs Art Museum Artist Council Exhibition (ACE). Artists Council Exhibition is an annual juried exhibition and sale of artworks created by Artists Council members. Art works are sold with 50% of the proceeds going to the museum’s educational programs and 50% going to the artist. Works go on sale October 20 through December 6. An awards ceremony will be held on November 7. Faced with over 500 entries Christian’s task was neither easy nor enviable. “For over 20 years I have curated art by viewing photographs. I do this almost on instinct, without much contemplation. So I thought ‘How hard can it be?’ to jury this show,” said Christian. “I was wrong. I had not realized the depth of the Artist Council talent pool.” Faced with diverse entries, Christian narrowed the selection to 48 works. “Curating any exhibition requires time and consideration. My first viewing of the photos was very different from my second viewing. I found myself full of questions that a photograph and a small description from the artist couldn’t answer.” “The main difference when curating for the gallery is that I draw from what I know. I know every artist’s work. I know the sizes. The texture and I can visualize a work in a space even if I have only seen a picture. I know which artists are compatible and which are not. I know each background story, each vision and often I know the work for years, so I can tell where it comes from

and where it is going.” “This exhibition is distinctly different. I did not know the artists. I saw three works that may or may not be representational of the artist’s work. The artists choose which works to submit. If one of our artists gives me three works to choose from I can instantly tell whether they are of quality in comparison to everything else they have done. For the ACE I had to make my choices based solely on the maximum of three works by each artist never having seen them in real life. It was a challenge.” Art has a way of speaking to the viewer. “Choices started to fall into place, art works started to communicate with each other and I was able to assemble what is now the final selection of exhibited works. Art is very subjective and the commercial art world is competitive. I learned from my father that passion drives artists to create. As a curator I learned about quality, consistency, longevity and originality. Sometimes passion and talent are not enough conform to the tough standards of the commercial art market. But as I reviewed these submissions I recalled the passion that makes art so wonderful. Art is an expression of untamed emotion, creativity and non-conformism. This is an exciting exhibition of works selected on the passion of the artist. The exhibition is not just an accumulation of individual works that might appeal to the collectors I know.” “The question about why I chose these specific works cannot be answered in one global reply. Each work that I ultimately selected intrigued me on one or more of three levels: quality, content and idea. I hope what visitors will see is the breadth of talent that is fostered in this area. It is quite impressive!” “When I had to choose between a work that was crafted well and one that had a more original idea, I would select idea over craft. With that I hope that visitors and potential collectors will hopefully break out of existing viewing patterns and honor what is original instead of going for what is familiar. We are living in times where it is difficult to create something groundbreaking and one might not discover the next Gerhard Richter in this exhibition, but there are many promising artists that have potential. It is crucial to always reinvent and to look for something new, even if it’s subtle. But even after making the final selection, I knew there were many others I would have selected if I could.” Christian also noted. “There is one thing that I would like to remind visitors of this show: Athletes get endorsements, musicians get royalties, but artists always rely on sales of their art works. If you see an artist that you like, please keep that in mind.” For more on Hohmann® Fine Art visit hohmannfineart.com. Veterans Search for Twix

T

wix is a special dog to San Bernardino resident John Silva, a loving canine companion who helps him stay calm and in control of his emotions. An Army combat Veteran, Silva completed two deployments, one to Iraq and a second in Afghanistan and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). After six years in the military, he acknowledges he returned a changed man, occasionally becoming upset, depressed, and anxious. Although Twix is not a certified service dog, Silva and his wife, Rachel Hester, report Twix was instrumental in helping him remain calm and keep his stress under control. We dog lovers know how their presence in our lives can lift our moods and help reduce stress. The public is largely aware of how service animals assist physically disabled humans, such as guide dogs helping people who are blind. They are not as familiar about how an emotional support animal helps those with anxiety or other mental health condition. An increasing number of returning combat veterans rely on the unconditional love and support from canines to help with stress. When his two dogs went missing from his backyard, Silva was devastated and did

not know how he could cope with the loss of Twix. They found Duke a few hours later, but he feared the worst for Twix knowing that the bonded pair of dogs always stayed together. He was particularly afraid for Twix given his breed, knowing that unscrupulous people often steal pit bulls for illegal purposes. Silva went to the media pleading for whoever had Twix to return him and reached out to a San Diego based organization, “Sherri’s Project: Wounded Warrior Pack”, a nonprofit that finds and trains service dogs for combat-wounded military, as well as victims of military sexual assault. Teddy Garcia Jr., a veteran with the group who had a service dog of his own, made finding Twix a full time endeavor, understanding the emotional roller coaster the dog’s absence created for Silva. The San Bernardino Sun newspaper covered the story of Silva and his missing dog, and the article they posted on their Facebook page went viral with half a million views and thousands of Shares. A tearful Silva made appearances on local television and radio. The publicity paid off. Last Thursday another call came in, and Silva’s wife, yelled excitedly to the

volunteers, “We found Twix!” They learned a woman in nearby Arrowbear had Twix. She was at a shopping area near the Silva’s home when she saw a man yelling at a dog to get out of his truck. The friendly dog tried to back into the truck, and the man yelled angrily and drove away, leading the good Samaritan to come to the wrong conclusion that the dog was his pet being abandoned. It was an emotional filled reunion when Silva and Hester drove up the mountains to retrieve Twix. Silva stated, “I started crying when I saw his head pop up. Every day we had messages or texts giving us tips, many of them from folks trying to catch dogs they thought were Twix, and others from people offering us prayers and support. It turns out Twix just wanted to go for a ride!” Research is currently underway to substantiate how service dogs help our

returning “wounded warriors”. It appears the dogs can assuage the hypervigilance common in vets with PTSD. Many report that for the first time they are able to sleep soundly through the night, knowing that a naturally alert soul is standing guard over them. These animals draw out the most isolated personality and having to praise and train them helps traumatized vets overcome emotional numbness. Evidence is mounting that shows bonding with dogs has positive biological effects on humans, including elevated levels of the hormone oxytocin. Meg Daley with the Warrior Canine Connection reports, “This increased oxytocin improves trust, the ability to interpret facial expressions, the overcoming of paranoia and other pro-social effects - - - the opposite of PTSD symptoms.” Veteran John Silva reports overwhelming joy at having Twix back in his life. He is overcome with emotion recalling how the community rallied to help. He states, “I was hoping to get some people’s attention, but had no idea how this story would bring in so many people to help. I just want to thank everyone who helped and shared our story.” Jmcafee7@verizon.net

Sammy’s Back in Town! -- and so is Frank!

L

et’s put an end to all these “Sammy” sightings we keep hearing about. One of our valley’s venerable restaurateurs, professionally and affectionately known as Sammy G, is back living a dream: “It’s been my dream of a lifetime to enjoy the most intimate of dining—it’s what I do, it’s my place.” Indeed, it is. His new restaurant in town is simply named Sammy’s Place. Easy enough to find, right on the corner of Hwy 111 and Date Palm Drive in Cathedral City, Sammy’s Place has been opened less than a month and already his following of friends, loyal customers, and foodies of all types have converged at this intimate dining spot. Wine lovers will find it inviting with its lengthy wine bar that comfortably seats and tends the lusty vino desires of our wine community. The warm, friendly, and familiar surrounds of this Italian restaurant definitely accents Sammy’s strive for intimate dining. With this smaller dining room atmosphere, this place cannot be anything but cozy. This is tableside service at its best: a welcoming and efficient staff headed by one of the most genial and beloved restaurateurs in town. And Sammy G intends to treat his diners as he would in his own home. So Ralph Iannuzzi, owner of the Wine Vault of the Desert, invites me over to meet him at Sammy’ Place to get a start on some particular dishes and check out the scene. Immediately upon entering, right around 7pm, we see the dining room almost filled and we recognize already a few of our foodie and wine friends enjoying dinner; as we said, Sammy G definitely has a following. And as the word gets out about this new venue, it already appears that it’s on the radar for this up-coming season. So we’ll certainly be back to cover a more established Sammy’s Place, as the menu and wine list will continue to evolve. Right now, we’re simply thrilled to be raising awareness. For starters, the wine menu carries a bright and intelligent selection. House wine includes the four popular Chard, Pinot Grige, Merlot and Cab Sauv., for only $4 a glass.

Now that’s how to do it! Very reputable Italian Sparklers, Whites, and Reds make up the remaining selection, all available by the glass from only $6 to $9, and, by the bottle— all reasonably priced. At these wine prices, I can see the wine bar being a leisurely hangout all on its own. Now onto the dishes: The menu is perfect for that intimate dining impression. Currently there are five appetizers and three salads. This keeps things fresh and easily approachable. Sammy is always famous for his tomatoes and they make their enlightening appearance here. The light and crispy calamari fritti is on the menu, but, when the dish was delivered to the table, surprisingly, it was calamari stuffed with Dungeness Crab—no complaints here. We like how Executive Chef Scott Robertson keeps it adaptable, accommodating and inventively tasty. With the smaller and selective dinner menu, all of the dishes are made fresh to order. Every entrée we tried was delicious— and be warned, the portions are abundant. Eggplant Parmesan layered with Provolone was fresh and light, nothing like the overly fried stuff one often finds around town. The Vodka Pasta was a marinara pink sauce with vodka and served with pancetta. Of course we had to order the venue’s lasagna, and we had the Catch of the Day—always featuring the day’s fresh fish. Tonight was Sand Dabs served in a lemon piccatta style sauce. Delish! Stop by with hellos and hugs to Sammy G. Now Frank Sinatra’s persona has always remained here in Palm Springs. He is forever the mayor, its poet laureate, and he continues to graciously look down upon us as the “Chairman of the Board” while we celebrate his memory with crystal clean dry martinis or with his personal favorite, Jack Daniels’ Gentlemen Jack on the Rocks. December 12 will mark Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday and all types of celebrations are happening throughout our town for this momentous milestone event. Our town served as the legendary crooner’s second home for nearly 50 years, so this party is on—time to start spreading the news. All over the place, there will be Rat-Pack inspired parties, dinners, cocktail fests—you name it, taking part in doing it up “his way”. For certain, Johnny Costa’s Italian Ristorante, 440 S. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm

Springs, CA 92262 (760) 325-4556 will be the ticket where we can indeed enjoy Sinatra’s favorite steak preparation while meeting and greeting Chef Emeritus, Johnny Costa, who served as Frank’s personal chef back in the day. If you’ve never been there—goodness, treat yourself to the iconic Palm Springs restaurant that reeks of that 50s and 60s elegance and Rat-Pack charm. Smack on the 12th of December, one of the most dynamic Sinatra inspired crooners around, Steve DiTullio, will be performing at the Pinzimini Ristorante, located in the Westin Mission Hills Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage (760)770.2150. I’ve caught Pisano Steve before, where he blew the roof off the Miramonte Hotel at a Beaujolais Nouveau tasting party with some rousing renditions of Sinatra, Dean Martin, and that whole crew. I think reservations for that dinner party will go fast, so it’s best to get on that quick! And speaking of the Mission Hills Westin, it’s Jazz & Wine on the Lawn with the jazz concert series, Grooves at the Westin. Call the resort or go online to find the great musical line up and dates. westinmissionhills.com/ Grooves Saluti! e alla bella vita!

INAUGURAL COACHELLA VALLEY BEER WEEK KICKS OFF NOV. 13 The first-ever Coachella Valley Beer Week (CVBW) will be take place November 13-22 at breweries, restaurants, pubs and other venues throughout the greater Palm Springs area. This valley-wide celebration will showcase local breweries, festivals, dinners, tours, pub crawls, tastings and meet-the-brewer nights. The event is being organized by Erin Peters, a popular craft beer writer known as “The Beer Goddess,” and Brent Schmidmann, founder/former owner of Schmidy’s Tavern in Palm Desert and current Head of Sales for Coachella Valley Brewing Company. “We wanted to give Coachella Valley residents the opportunity to taste a variety of rare and new beers, meet area brewmasters and mix with other beer drinkers, all while celebrating the culture and community of beer,” said Peters. “This is a great opportunity to raise a glass and discover the valley’s burgeoning beer scene.” Some of the highlights of CVBW include a food and beer pairing event at The Purple Room in Palm Springs, a BBQ and Beer competition at the Indio Municipal Golf Course, a progressive “beer crawl” on Palm Springs’ Buzz trolley, the 4th annual Props & Hops Craft Beer Festival at the Palm Springs Air Museum, tastings, live music and much more. “Coachella Valley Beer Week is an extension of the growing craft beer revolution and we invite all enthusiasts to come enjoy the festivities and learn more about the art of making it,” said Peters. LOVE & JUSTICE FOR ALL? FREEHELD

The true love story of Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore) and Stacie Andree (Ellen Page) and their fight for justice is a compelling tale about bigotry, equality and the entrenched “traditions” that protect some and dismiss others. It’s also a movie about right and wrong -- and, in my opinion, good and evil. Laurel is a decorated New Jersey police detective with 23 years of stellar service behind her badge. She’s also a heavy smoker – although not indicated as such in the film – and when she’s diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, a terminal diagnosis, she wants to leave her hard earned pension to Stacie, her same sex domestic partner. But when she makes that request to county officials – called Freeholders -they conspire to block Laurel from doing this and outright deny her request. Her cop partner, uncompromising detective Dane Wells (a terrific Michael Shannon), and activist Steven Goldstein (Steve Carell) join forces in Laurel and Stacie’s defense, rallying community support in their fight for justice and equality. Peter Sollet directs Ron Nyswaner’s powerful screenplay. (Nyswaner also wrote PHILADELPHIA.) Over time movies like this have the power to generate empathy and change minds. Pick of the week.

NEW FOR THE HOME THEATER: SOUTHPAW

Billy “The Great” Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) is the reigning Light Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World. On the surface, it seems Billy has it all – a winning career, a beautiful and loving wife (Rachel McAdams), an adorable daughter and a lavish lifestyle. But when tragedy strikes and his long-term manager, he hits rock bottom and turns to Tick Willis (Forest Whitaker), a most unlikely savior operating a run-down local gym for non-pro fighters – mostly kids who need a mentor and father figure. With Billy’s future riding on Tick’s questionable guidance, Billy takes on the hardest battle of his life in a last ditch effort to redeem himself and just maybe win back the trust of those he loves. Antoine Fuqua directs from a visceral screenplay by Kurt Sutter. Anchor Bay. Bluray. A LITTLE CHAOS Against all odds, an impoverished widow makes her mark in the glittering court of King Louis XIV of France in this sumptuous romance set in the legendary gardens of Versailles. Alan Rickman directs, co-wrote and stars with Kate Winslet, who plays Sabine de Barra, a strong-willed and talented landscape designer who is chosen to build one of the main gardens at the new

palace. In her new position of power, she challenges gender and class barriers while also becoming professionally and romantically entangled with the court’s renowned landscape artist Andre Le Notre (Matthias Schoenaerts). This is a gorgeously appointed, gloriously acted and engaging romp through one of the most enthralling settings in history. Universal. Blu-ray. TESTAMENT OF YOUTH

Alexander Skarsgård stars in this cleverly twisted thriller in which a family finds refuge in an underground chamber with nothing to distract them from their own fear. The one thing they know for certain is that something terrifying and strange threatens their exceedingly fragile existence – and it is coming for them. Written and directed by the Duffer Brothers. Perfect for Halloween. Warner Bros. DVD. Comments? RobinESimmons@aol.com

A Return to Reason

T

his world seems to be on the brink of chaos. Perhaps for all generations it appears that way. As human beings, how have we come to be so intense, so religious, so hostile? Is there a way to understand the mystery of the universe and our human behavior? In Salman Rushdie’s Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights (Random House, 304 pages) a mythology of colliding worlds sheds light on our human nature. Set in our recognizable world, a terrible storm hits New York devastating the city and disrupting lives. It has also ripped a whole in the fabric of the universe allowing the Jinn to slip into the human world. But these Jinn, more commonly thought of as “genies” who are trapped in bottles, are no longer bound. Since the storm, Geronimo Menezes, a gardener, no longer touches the ground. He floats just inches above the earth. His neighbors now fear him. Jimmy Kapoor loves comic books and video games. He lives in the Bronx with his mother who only wants him to settle down with a nice girl. Then a wormhole cracks the wall in his bedroom and he becomes a “real-life” superhero. Mayor Rosa Fast discovers an abandoned baby who can identify frauds. Together they clean up city hall. What do these simple people have in common beside strange powers? Small earlobes. They are the descendants of the ancient Jinnia Princess Dunia. A Jinn.

By Heidi Simmons “two years eight months and twenty-eight nights” By salman rushdie Fiction

The Jinn are shape-shifting, timeless creatures who make love often -- although love itself is rare -- are quick to anger, are resentful, vindictive, possessive and believe women are for men’s use. They live in the moment and are not good at making plans. Millennia before the story takes place, Dunia, taking the shape of a 16-year-old girl, falls in love with a mortal, the great philosopher Ibn Rushd. Together they had over 20 children. Brokenhearted after his death, Dunia slips through the tear into the human world. She falls in love with Geronimo knowing he is her great grandson - too many greats to count – and a reincarnation of her once beloved Rushd. Meanwhile, other Jinn have found their way into the world and are set on colonizing the earth and enslaving its people. The most powerful of Jinn, Zumurrud, Zabardast, Ra’im Blood-Drinker and Shining Ruby wreak havoc on New York’s landmarks and people. After the death of Dunia’s Jinn father, she becomes the Queen of Qaf. She seeks vengeance on the four evil Jinn known as the Grand Ifrits. Her desire is to restore civility to the earth and it inhabitants. It becomes the War of the Worlds.

Dunia and her Dunizát fight the evil that is set on destroying mankind. Geronimo, Jimmy, Mayor Rosa and others also use their powers to help fight the evil Jinn. It is a messy battle of monsters and trickery, but with the help of her half-mortal relatives, Dunia gains control and re-bottles the worst of the Jinn thus saving the human race. From the start of the storm, to the final conflict, it takes exactly two years, eight months and twenty-eight nights. This novel is beautiful and meaningful magical realism. Author Rushdie uses existing mythology, ancient history, known religions, global events and real places to weave a tale of human turmoil. Using the 1,001 Arabian Nights as an inspiration, Rushdie explores a world that is filled with old belief systems. It is a world that has lost its ability to reason. Underneath the whimsical characters, the poetic sentences and layered plot, is an intense philosophical debate about belief. Told to the reader by unknown chroniclers, they are not judging behavior or reprimanding.

Just stating the events and how the two years, eight months and twenty-eight nights unfolded in the world. Giving the story credibility, the chroniclers make references and include the origins of the old and new gods and the ancient and modern individuals who shaped the world. They debate the legitimacy of what I call the “god wars.” The Chroniclers acknowledge that after a millennia the story has degenerated. Furthermore, it is possible that the story of the War of the Worlds has become mere legend, rank speculation or pure fiction. But the Chroniclers’ summarize the story as “a plea for a world ruled by reason, tolerance, magnanimity, knowledge and restraint.” In Rushdie’s novel the Jinn are defeated. Greed and fear cease to drive humans to a vengeful God. Humans are finally “able to set God aside, as boys and girls put down their childhood toys or as young men and women leave their parents home to make new homes for themselves.” Reason rules and the earth is beautiful again and humans live in peace. Two Years, Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights is so dense and idea-filled that at times it’s hard to absorb. It can feel overwhelming. But, once I set aside the allegories, metaphors and symbolism -- if indeed there are any -- and just surrendered to Rushdie’s prose, wit and charm, I was smitten. I was moved by his passion, knowledge and love for the people of this world.

Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce Presents

the 51st Annual Golf Cart Parade

Sunday, October 25, 2014, 1:00 pm on El Paseo in Palm Desert

T

The poster says: “Divided by war. United by love.” And that’s a perfunctory summary -- if not a cliché -- for the meticulously realized, emotional film that brings to vivid life Vera Brittain’s memoir of her WWI experiences of love and loss. From the producers of HARRY POTTER, I AM LEGEND and GRAVITY, this true account of war and remembrance from a woman’s point of view is a timeless and hugely relevant pacifist manifesto that was an instant best-seller upon its initial publication in the 1920s. At the time -- and long afterward -- Brittain was hailed as the “voice of her generation.” That voice still rings true. The movie unfolds with a clear perspective through the eyes – and heart – of Vera (Alicia Viklander), a free-minded and independent young woman whose intense romance with Roland (Kit Harington) is interrupted by the war. The film notably recreates Vera’s heart-wrenching wartime experience as a nurse on the front. After the war, Vera wrote perhaps the most defining memoir of her time. Sony. Blu-ray.

he Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade, the largest parade of its kind in the world, is also the longest running in the desert. Celebrating 51 years this October 25th, the Parade is much more than a fun, colorful and festive event. It serves as a completely unique event for bringing the community together in true desert style – on golf carts. Our desert tradition began in 1961 and was held in the summer months for the locals. Now, it’s on the last Sunday in October. It is known as the unofficial kick-off to season, drawing crowds of more than 20,000 on a beautiful sunny Coachella Valley day. This Year’s Theme: “Area 51: Palm Desert is Out of this World” Theme Entered by General Sales Manager Rob Zavitka of Sunny 103.1 Title Sponsors: City of Palm Desert, Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce. Presented by: The Auen Foundation. Grand Marshal: Robert “Bob” Gilliland, California Aviation Hall of Fame Inductee and First Pilot of the SR 71 Blackbird. “It’s tradition,” says Dottie Stitzinger, a regular Parade-goer. “We just must go every year for the silliness, the school bands, and those floats on carts. The Golf Cart Parade is the best way to celebrate the desert

community, and we just love sitting in the Senior Seating.” The Parade Kicks off on El Paseo at 1:00 p.m. with this year’s theme: “Area 51: Palm Desert is Out of this World.” UFOs and aliens will abound in this celebration of galactic proportions. Thankfully the Parade is hosting the celebrated 1st Marine Division Band from Camp Pendleton, who have returned this year to lead the festivities. The cavalcade features decorated electric golf carts, larger than life floats, marching bands galore, food booths, children’s games, celebrities and dignitaries. Notably, the Palm Desert City Council Hummer golf cart, The Auen Foundation’s float and the world famous Bob Hope cart make appearances each year. The day is full of activities, food and entertainment that will keep your belly full and your family smiling, while meeting new neighbors and celebrating our own golfers’ paradise. Parade Day Features for the Family Come early to enjoy the Palm Desert Rotary Pancake Breakfast at 8:00 am – located in the Bank of America parking lot, this is an annual favorite and perfect start to the day. Golf Cart Show opens at 10:00 a.m. on El Paseo – distributors and owners bring the latest in souped-up, historic and hotrod

carts for display. Vote for the People’s Choice Cart. “VIP Seats” are premier parade seating and primarily in the shade. With these seats there is no more rush to find a spot – everyone has a great view. A quality box lunch is provided as well. Seats are $25 each or $250 for a VIP Box of 10. Space is limited. RSVPs required (760-346-6111). Children’s Area and Food Vendors are open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Children’s Area is chock-full of hands-on and interactive games, crafts, a rock wall, petting area, face painting, bounce house and more! After working up an appetite, there are a variety of food vendors to please

everybody and cool slushy drinks and ice pops, too. The Auen Foundation’s Senior Seating is offered again, for a sixth year! These FREE, street-level seats are available only to the 64 plus crowd. With easy parking at The Gardens on El Paseo, these popular seats are guaranteed to fill up quickly. Box lunches are included at NO CHARGE with each reserved spot. California Desert National Monuments Up for Debate

T

ucked back in a canyon, several miles off the windmilled pass of the I-10 corridor, is the Wildlands Conservancy’s Whitewater Preserve. This 2,800 plus acres between the San Bernardino and San Jacinto Mountains has been completely restored where once existed an old trout farm. Now with wellkept ponds and amenities like covered picnic benches, brick pathways and modern bathrooms, it has been nurtured back to its natural habitat, reclaimed by indigenous flora and fauna. Senator Dianne Feinstein chose this beautiful slice of the California desert to hold a public hearing for the proposed California Desert National Monuments public meeting. Hidden out of sight, off the radar, and in the middle of nowhere, it would make sense that people would find it too remote to attend just to express a point of view about land conservation. But they came. By the busload! Cars, vans and shuttles stretched five miles along the narrow road between the hills that separate counties, cities and ecosystems. Estimates put attendance at over 800! From LA to Inyo, school children and the elderly, businessmen and naturalists, Indian tribes and private landowners, civic leaders and community organizers, got their say on three proposed monuments: Sand to Snow, Castle Mountains and Mojave Trails. Introduced to the Senate last February, Feinstein hopes to amend the California Desert Protection Act of 1994. Senate Bill 414 states: “To provide for conservation, enhanced recreation opportunities and development of renewable energy in the California Desert Conservation Area and for other purposes.” The California Desert Conservation and Recreation Act of 2015 plans to: “Establish or designate national monuments, wilderness areas, a special management area, off-highway vehicle recreation areas, a national scenic area and an area of critical environmental concern; release specified

wilderness study areas; adjust national park and preserve boundaries; and specify land withdrawals, exchanges and acquisitions.” The Sand to Snow National Monument is situated north of Palm Springs and Interstate 10 and includes the Whitewater Preserve, Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, the San Gorgonio Wilderness and the San Bernardino National Forest. This monument, if approved, would skirt the Morongo Reservation, cross highway 62 and border Pipes Canyon Preserve. Also proposed is to include Black Lava Butte/Flat Top Mesa. Castle Mountain National Monument is situated at the eastern edge of California’s border just above the tip of Nevada’s state line within California’s Mojave National Preserve. The Mojave Trails National Monument is a convoluted grid spanning over 100 miles west to east and 90 miles north to south. The monument is set between the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base and Fort Irwin; skirts the Mojave National Preserve; touches the north-east edge of Joshua Tree National Park; and is just miles from the Arizona border. Famed Route 66 runs through the length of the proposed monument. All three proposed monuments are in federally managed land and, so far, there are no property transfers designated. The most controversial and debated region was the Mojave Trails National Monument. Congressman Paul Cook, Republican from Yucca Valley, represents California’s 8th district, which includes Inyo and Mono counties, Twentynine Palms, most of San Bernardino County and Victorville. Introduced October 1 of this year, Cook has his own bill in the House – H.R. 3668, which conflicts with the Democratic Senator’s SB414. Cook was not present but sent John Sobel, his Chief of Staff. Cook’s bill states: “To codify in law and expand certain off-highway vehicle recreation areas in the Sate of California, to

By Heidi Simmons designate as wilderness certain public lands in the Sate of California administered by the Bureau of Land Management, to expand the Death Valley National Park Wilderness and the San Gorgonio Wilderness in San Bernardino National Forest, to ensure the conservation and necessary management of wildlife in these wilderness areas, to establish the Mojave Trails Special Management Area in the State and for other purposes.” It would appear to regular folks that these two bills seem to be about the same things. But they are not! This is a debate between government’s control and restrictions of land and the peoples’ right to use it. How hard can it be to meet in the middle? With the way of politics these days in the District of Columbia – it appears to be impossible. Adding to the controversy, Feinstein has considered using the 1906 Antiquities Act, first used by Theodore Roosevelt, which would allow a presidential proclamation to create national monuments from public lands. With a simple signature from President Obama, Sand to Snow, Castle Mountains and Mojave Trails would be national monuments no matter what US citizens want. For some, this would be ideal; while for others, it amounts to tyranny! Some attendees brought hand-made placards and posted them along the road to the venue: “Antiquities Act Removes People’s Rights,” “The People Want a Voice,” “This is Your Land, This is My Land, Not Feinstein’s,” “Yes on Feinstein and No to Cook,” “Memo to President Obama, Yes to Mojave Trails,” “Keep Public Lands Open to the Public.” Serving not only as the host, but as moderator, Feinstein allowed all voices to be heard. She would not allow boos at those opposed to the monuments, and she gave extra time to disagreeing voices. With wit and charm, she even reigned-in a longwinded, albeit passionate, member on the Dais. Well organized and managed, speakers were called by name from submitted cards. They lined up behind two microphones.

Everyone had one minute. Timers sat in the front row. Back and forth, the public made their points with precision. People from all over the State shared their perspective to either supporters or detractors. It went on and on for more than two hours. The voices in favor of the three monuments seemed to out-number those against by two to one. But even those against, like local rock-hounds, miners and off-roaders, declared a love for the California desert and wilderness areas. They, their organizations and the members they represent, wanted to be heard and they wanted their views not only considered, but also included. As one miner said, “If it isn’t grown, then it’s mined.” He pointed to the cars in the lot, cell phones and tent posts and warned, “If California can’t mine the rare earth minerals, precious metals and microbials, then China will.” A representative from the Minerals & Mining Advisory Council said: “Shutting down millions and millions of acres of rich geology in the US and California sets the stage for a Chinese cartel.” A geologist recited a long list of important “iums” from the Periodic Table. He said: “These may not be significant now, but may be essential to our future.” And for a moment, there was common ground. Everyone present had a genuine concern for California’s future. Wildlife, renewable energy, jobs, open spaces, responsible mining, camping, stargazing, rock-hounding, horseback riding, offroading and hiking -- whatever it is, those who attended the Public Meeting on the Proposed California Desert Monuments all value our great California wilderness. Other government officials attending included: Mike Connor, U.S. Department of the Interior Deputy Secretary; Robert Bonnie, U.S. Department of Agriculture Under Secretary; John Laird, California Secretary for Natural Resources; Representative Raul Ruiz; Representative Pete Aguilar; James Ramos, San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors Chairman; John Benoit, Riverside County Supervisor. After the two plus hours of comments and a long day at the preserve that started at 1:00, the Senator thanked everyone again for attending and excused herself leaving a line of speakers yet to be heard by the remaining panel of officials. As she made her way to the parking lot, stopping for photos and handshakes among a throng of supporters and staff, I asked the Senator if she was pleased with the event, and if she thought the public meeting would make a difference. While she walked, carefully keeping an eye on the uneven ground, the Senator spoke to me reflecting on all she had heard throughout the day. After she recited the opposition’s strongest points -- as if for the first time considering the significance out loud -- Senator Feinstein finished by saying, “Yes, I’m confident the bill will pass.”

Ghouls Just Want to Have Fun!

ccording to the National Retail Federation, Americans will spend nearly $8 billion on Halloween this year which or nearly $93 per person, up 12% from last year. When you consider that one-third of the population will not spend anything on the holiday, this equates to $139 per participant. Halloween represents ‘only’ 3% of the money that Americans spend on holidays annually. Overall, Americans are expected to spend approximately one-quarter of one TRILLION dollars on holidays this year, excluding alcohol sales. Christmas is most popular with nearly $150 billion in spending followed by Thanksgiving at $32 billion. Valentine’s Day comes in third at $20 billion followed by Mother’s Day, Easter, Father’s

Day’s and then Halloween. Typically, the younger you are, the most likely it is that you will participate in the scariest of holidays (neither Tax Day or Election Day count). Nine in ten 18-24 year olds celebrate with 75% wearing costumes while only four in ten people over 65 will do anything (25% dressing up). People spend approximately $47 on their costumes, $40 on candy/treats, $37 on decorations and $2 on greeting cards. Eleven percent of us will dress up their pets (poor Fluffy and Fido). Does your costume say anything about you? Psychology Today considered this question in a study of 18-24 year-olds. They found that most costumes suggest some subliminal statement…not a great surprise… they are Psychology Today after all. Overall, Halloween was a chance for this age group to express their sexuality, an important element in their development for marriage. Kit Yarrow, Ph.D., believes that this holiday is the one time that many get to show their unfettered sexual side (Freud would be proud of Yarrow). The rest of the year, they are developing other critical elements of their personality such their career, sense of humor and video gaming talents (I added the last one).

DUI? COURT IS ONLY HALF YOUR PROBLEM

n addition to court you have 10 days to request a DMV Hearing to avoid a license suspension for 4-5 months. The hearing generally occurs before a plea is entered and usually results in an unfavorable ruling. DMV hearing officers do not care about anything but the chemical test, though THAT IS NOT THE LAW! If you lose the DMV hearing, your license is suspended, as is also the case with a court plea on a DUI. After a DMV Suspension you must wait 30 days to request a restricted license, which requires: paying DMV $125.00; showing proof of DUI School enrollment and your insurance company filing an SR22 showing proof of insurance. The court suspension is different from the DMV “hard” suspension, but results in the same challenge for a defense lawyer. There are only three issues at the DMV hearing related to a blood or breath test as listed on the back of the DMV paperwork you received. The main issue is whether the officer had probable cause to stop or contact you and whether the chemical test is beatable. DMV has the burden of proof and must win on all three issues to suspend you license. However DMV does not use the same rules of evidence as the courts require, and thus win 98% of these Hearings.

24

THE DMV HEARING IS A PER SE HEARING AND IF YOU HAVE .08 OR HIGHER YOU ARE PER SE “GUILTY” IN THEIR EYES. By statute DMV is black and white. The hearing officers have NO authority to negotiate or extend courtesies. Unless we ask you to attend the DMV Hearing, you should not appear. While you have the right to be at your own hearing, it is not always a good idea for the following reasons: First: You won’t understand why you should not make a statement. Second: Most DMV Hearings are arguments over evidence, not facts. Clients don’t understand the difference between evidence and facts when they are in the hearing room, no matter how much we explained it in our office. Third: If present, the hearing officer could call you to testify under oath to clear up an issue that we could otherwise win. This is an administrative hearing which does not follow the same evidence rules as a courtroom where the DA could not call you to testify if we did not call you to testify. The hearing is taped so the DA could get the tape with your admissions, which may hurt your court case and adversely affect our ability to successfully negotiate. DMV hearings are usually not successful because the DMV Hearing Officer is both the Prosecutor AND the Judge. We must knock out one DMV issue to save your

Yarrow found that most women dress in more subservient sexy costumes like nurses, maids and schoolgirls while most men dress as saviors like Tarzan, pirates or superheroes. Generally speaking, she believes that these costumes represented the opposite of what a person feels about themselves. The most popular costume for women is a witch. Yarrow states that characters like witches, grim reapers and other predators are reflective of someone feeling less certain about their future while costumes that pick up on current popular culture icons are meant as a way of connecting with others. Influenster polled 42,000 Americans on their choices for Halloween costumes this year. Here in California, Alice from Wonderland is the top choice. In Arizona

and New Mexico it is Sugar Skulls while Texans and Virginians like their Skulls unsugared. Nebraska and South Dakota will have a bunch of princesses running around and Massachusetts is the home to Fairies. In Utah, cops rule while Nevada is a bunch of pumpkins…pumpkins?...really?? Connecticut and Iowa will have a bunch of pussycats flitting about while New Jersey will feature Flapper Girls. Illinois will be the land of Minions from the Despicable Me film series. In Minnesota, the land of lakes, mermaids will be freezing their tails off. So what is the most popular candy that Trick or Treaters will receive? Influenster found Life Savers to be the most popular candy in California. Alabama loves their AirHeads while Alaskans like their Snickers. Arizonans is a bit fancier with Toblerone while Texans like their Candy Corn. Florida is Nestle Crunch country while nobody messes with Idaho’s Butterfingers. Michigan is the land of M&Ms, while Maine likes their Starbursts. Louisiana favor Swedish Fish, North Dakota Sour Patch Kids and South Dakota, Laffy Taffy…whatever that is. Utah enjoys their Nerds while West Virginia likes their Oreos.

license and thus avoid paying a reissuance fee. With a DUI Arrest the officer “Snatches” your license and issues a pink temporary license good for 30 days under the “Stop and Snatch” law. IF your lawyer requests a hearing within 10 days and also requests a STAY, then your temporary license is good until the ruling. If you lose the DMV hearing or enter a court plea you must follow the directions set forth above for the return of your license. With a traffic accident DUI, do NOT volunteer info of your DUI when reporting it to your carrier. It is their responsibility to learn of the DUI and the carrier does NOT always know that alcohol was involved. Many clients mistakenly believe that if they

“plead for their license”, the hearing officer will have pity on them and give them a break. The hearing officer might pity you, but will still take your license. They have no authority to “Plea Bargain” or deviate from the statutory penalties...unlike the DA. However your cooperation increases your chances of success with each half of the problem. “DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE, CALL A TAXI OR UBER…IT IS A LOT CHEAPER THAN CALLING ME” If you have any questions regarding this column or ideas for future columns please contact attorney Dale Gribow at his NEW number: 760 837-7500 or his new email: dale@ dalegribowlaw.com

The Maddening Life Of A Coach

I

t used to be a football coach, coached football. Sculpted sharp, young men out of soft, flimsy boys, taught self-respect, preached hard work, prayed for wisdom and by gum, won football games. But that’s changed. There’s little patience for sculpting a new offense, let a lone affecting a life forever. Now coaches are more concerned about their jobs than the lives of the players they coach. They’re less interested in teaching and more interested in winning and it’s showing up at every level of football. There’s the occasional coach that spits clichés about honor and commitment and excellence, but once that façade is peeled back, in the face of reality, he’s burping out one-liners that he’s not living. USC had a guy like that. Steve Sarkisian.

They fired him because he reportedly showed up to Sunday practice drunk. And multiple reports indicated multiple people knew the charming, kindly “Sark” had a drinking problem. How many people knew of Sarkisian’s drinking problem and did nothing to help the man, dissuade the man from selfdestruction? I’m not sure what the number is, but it’s too big. Too many people decided their job security was more important than reporting the many public transgressions. And that’s the life of a big-time coach. Surrounded by those hoping to springboard from one program’s success to their own program. Now a coach’s life is pandering to the interests that be, hoping he’s not accused of preaching or praying, teaching a little and placating a lot. There might be not be a finer man to coach football, but Coach Pagano is likely fired after this season. After 4 years of solid work his decisionmaking was reduced, by fear, to trying to outsmart his opposition into putting too many men on the field. Forget actual football, the best strategy

sports Scene

Week of October 22

he came up with collapsed into a bad gimmick. It’s the kind of thing that happens when a man feels he’s tried everything else and only the irrational would work. But his job is under scrutiny, some believe he’s going to be fired and others believe he will be fired because he can’t crack The Patriots Code. So he needed to beat the Pats on Sunday Night Football for vindication. But it went the opposite direction. It’s the maddening life of a football coach. It takes a special kind of person to dedicate 25 hours a day to the game of football. Watching film, constructing game plans, building confidence, demolishing selfwill, it’s a difficult thing and its becoming more difficult every year. It’s so tough, one man who claimed to be tough, quit the job. Mid-season. Steve Spurrier quit. Outright.

His South Carolina Gamecocks lost another game, he figured their season was lost. After a career spanning decades, he suddenly called it quits. Like so many other things in sports, the world of a coach has drastically changed. I’m not sure Lombardi or Paul Brown or Tom Landry or even the more contemporary Bill Walsh could, or would, coach in today’s climate. Julie Buehler hosted the Coachella Valley’s most popular sports talk radio show, “Buehler’s Day Off” every day for 3 years, but now she can be exclusively seen on KMIR sharing the coolest stories in sports. She’s an avid gym rat, slightly sarcastic and more likely to recite Steve Young’s career passing stats than American Idol winners. Tune in to KMIR’s nightly news or KMIR.com for her sports reports.

Undefeated Teams: This Year’s Big NFL Narrative

T

he Cincinnati Bengals are still undefeated. So are the Carolina Panthers. Peyton Manning is trying his best to get the Denver Broncos to lose, but thanks to their defense they, too, are without a loss. Aaron Rodgers and Eddie Lacy haven’t been at their best, and although the Green Bay Packers’ defense allowed 503 yards passing to Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers, the Packers managed to avoid defeat. But the New England Patriots beat the Indianapolis Colts, keeping the honor of the league’s best unbeaten team. The Patriots were the most efficient team in the league over the first five weeks, per Football Outsiders’ Defense-adjusted Value Over Average metric, which measures a team’s efficiency by comparing success on every single play to a league average based on situation and opponent. Bill Belichik’s offensive unit sees 81.2 percent of down series result in a first down or touchdown, the highest success rate in the NFL. The Patriots’ defense have allowed a 69.3 percent success rate to opponents (12th best among defensive units) and their defensive front seven rank fourth in adjusted

26

sack rate (9.6 percent), which gives sacks (plus intentional grounding penalties) per pass attempt adjusted for down, distance and opponent. However, not only are the Patriots the league’s best undefeated team, they are dominating the league in a similar fashion to their 2007 season, when they went 16-0 during the regular season. In 2007, the Patriots had an adjusted margin of victory of 20.1 points per game. This season, before the Week 6 matchup with the Colts, they have an adjusted margin

of victory of 18.5 points per game. So it’s no wonder they are the Super Bowl favorite. According to ESPN’s Football Power Index, the Patriots have a 96 percent chance to make the playoffs and an NFL-best 22 percent chance to win the Super Bowl heading into Week 6. That’s in line with PredictWise, which compiles odds from Betfair and removes the cut the house gets. They give the Patriots a 23 percent chance to win Super Bowl 50, with the Packers close behind at 22 percent. No other team is in double digits.

Another undefeated season seems unlikely, but it’s hard to look at this Patriots team and not see the best the NFL has to offer. With this knowledge, Las Vegas adjusted the Super Bowl Futures lines as follows; Green Bay Packers +300 (30-1), Patriots +330 (33-1), Bengels +1000 (100-1), Broncos +1350 (135-1) , Cardinals +1500 (150-1), and (gulp) the Panthers at +1800. The Chargers are, well, where you’d expect the Chargers to be at +7000 (700-1). Maybe next year.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): According to the online etymological dictionary, the verb “fascinate” entered the English language in the 16th century. It was derived from the Middle French fasciner and the Latin fascinatus, which are translated as “bewitch, enchant, put under a spell.” In the 19th century, “fascinate” expanded in meaning to include “delight, attract, hold the attention of.” I suspect you will soon have experiences that could activate both senses of “fascinate.” My advice is to get the most out of your delightful attractions without slipping into bewitchment. Is that even possible? It will require you to exercise fine discernment, but yes, it is. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): One of the largest machines in the world is a “bucket wheel excavator” in Kazakhstan. It’s a saw that weighs 45,000 tons and has a blade the size of a four-story building. If you want to slice through a mountain, it’s perfect for the job. Indeed, that’s what it’s used for over in Kazakhstan. Right now, Taurus, I picture you as having a metaphorical version of this equipment. That’s because I think you have the power to rip open a clearing through a massive obstruction that has been in your way. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock did a daily ritual to remind him of life’s impermanence. After drinking his tea each morning, he flung both cup and saucer over his shoulder, allowing them to smash on the floor. I don’t recommend that you adopt a comparable custom for long-term use, but it might be healthy and interesting to do so for now. Are you willing to outgrow and escape your old containers? Would you consider diverging from formulas that have always worked for you? Are there any unnecessary taboos that need to be broken? Experiment with the possible blessings that might come by not clinging to the illusion of “permanence.” CANCER (June 21-July 22): Terence was a comic playwright in ancient Rome. He spoke of love in ways that sound modern. It can be capricious and weird, he said. It may provoke indignities and rouse difficult emotions. Are you skilled at debate? Love requires you to engage in strenuous discussions. Peace may break out in the midst of war, and vice versa. Terence’s conclusion: If you seek counsel regarding the arts of love, you may as well be asking for advice on how to go mad. I won’t argue with him. He makes good points. But I suspect that in the coming weeks you will be excused from most of those crazy-making aspects. The sweet and smooth sides of love will predominate. Uplift and inspiration are more likely than angst and bewilderment. Take advantage of the grace period! Put chaos control measures in place for the next time Terence’s version of love returns. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In the coming weeks, you will have a special relationship with the night. When the sun goes down, your intelligence will intensify, as will your knack for knowing what’s really important and what’s not. In the darkness, you will have an enhanced capacity to make sense of murky matters lurking in the shadows. You will be able to penetrate deeper than usual, and get to the bottom of secrets and mysteries that have kept you off-balance. Even your grimy fears may be transformable if you approach them with a passion for redemption. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): New friends and unexpected teachers are in your vicinity, with more candidates on the way. There may even be potential comrades who could eventually become flexible collaborators and catalytic guides. Will you be available for the openings they offer? Will you receive them with fire in your heart and mirth in your eyes? I worry that you may not be ready if you are too preoccupied with old friends and familiar teachers. So please make room for surprises. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): More than any other sign, you have an ability to detach yourself from life’s flow and analyze its complexities with cool objectivity. This is mostly a good thing. It enhances your power to make rational decisions. On the other

hand, it sometimes devolves into a liability. You may become so invested in your role as observer that you refrain from diving into life’s flow. You hold yourself apart from it, avoiding both its messiness and vitality. But I don’t foresee this being a problem in the coming weeks. In fact, I bet you will be a savvy watcher even as you’re almost fully immersed in the dynamic flux. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Are you an inventor? Is it your specialty to create novel gadgets and machines? Probably not. But in the coming weeks you may have metaphorical resemblances to an inventor. I suspect you will have an enhanced ability to dream up original approaches and find alternatives to conventional wisdom. You may surprise yourself with your knack for finding ingenious solutions to long-standing dilemmas. To prime your instincts, I’ll provide three thoughts from inventor Thomas Edison. 1. “To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.” 2. “Just because something doesn’t do what you planned it to do doesn’t mean it’s useless.” 3. “Everything comes to those who hustle while they wait.” SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Some unraveling is inevitable. What has been woven together must now be partially unwoven. But please refrain from thinking of this mysterious development as a setback. Instead, consider it an opportunity to reexamine and redo any work that was a bit hasty or sloppy. Be glad you will get a second chance to fix and refine what wasn’t done quite right the first time. In fact, I suggest you preside over the unraveling yourself. Don’t wait for random fate to accomplish it. And for best results, formulate an intention to regard everything that transpires as a blessing. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “A waterfall would be more impressive if it flowed the other way,” said Irish author Oscar Wilde. I appreciate the wit, but don’t agree with him. A plain old ordinary waterfall, with foamy surges continually plummeting over a precipice and crashing below, is sufficiently impressive for me. What about you, Capricorn? In the coming days, will you be impatient and frustrated with plain old ordinary marvels and wonders? Or will you be able to enjoy them just as they are? AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Years ago, I moved into a rental house with my new girlfriend, whom I had known for six weeks. As we fell asleep the first night, a song played in my head: “Nature’s Way,” by the band Spirit. I barely knew it and had rarely thought of it before. And yet there it was, repeating its first line over and over: “It’s nature’s way of telling you something’s wrong.” Being a magical thinker, I wondered if my unconscious mind was telling me a secret about my love. But I rejected that possibility; it was too painful to contemplate. When we broke up a few months later, however, I wished I had paid attention to that early alert. I mention this, Aquarius, because I suspect your unconscious mind will soon provide you with a wealth of useful information, not just through song lyrics but other subtle signals, as well. Listen up! At least some of it will be good news, not cautionary like mine. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): When I advise you to GET NAKED, I don’t mean it in a literal sense. Yes, I will applaud if you’re willing to experiment with brave acts of self-revelation. I will approve of you taking risks for the sake of the raw truth. But getting arrested for indecent exposure might compromise your ability to carry out those noble acts. So, no, don’t actually take off all your clothes and wander through the streets. Instead, surprise everyone with brilliant acts of surrender and vulnerability. Gently and sweetly and poetically tell the Purveyors of Unholy Repression to take their boredom machine and shove it up their humdrum. CORE STRENGTH

S

ix-pack abs appears to be a fascination with Americans. Possessing rock-hard washboard abs is the goal amongst many. Truly one should be thinking, how do I maintain the muscles “springy and elastic,” in a well honed state?” A healthy muscle has this consistency. Many people get caught up in how many crunches or abdominal exercises they can do in one day. This is a misconception. You don’t need to have a sixpack to have healthy abs. Fortunately our abdominals are a group of muscles that can be exercised everyday. Let’s take a look at the anatomy of our abdominals. The rectus abdominis is actually the 10-pack that runs from the pubic bone to the breastbone. This muscle helps us rise out of bed in the morning. This muscle is also the most superficial and visible of the four abdominal muscle groups. The internal and external obliques are on the sides of the torso and helps us bend and twist. Our oblique muscles are used in virtually every activity. Finally, the deepest layer of abdominal muscles is the transverse abdominus. The center of all of our movement stems from the transverse. The transverse abdominus is located horizontally underneath the rectus abdominis and the obliques. The transverse also function with the autonomic nervous system. I am a yoga instructor and those who attend my classes know I focus heavily on strengthening the abs. Yoga is excellent for training and building strength and healthy abs. Too many people think ab training is doing hundreds of crunches, which does nothing for flexibilty. The reality is, you should train for strength. You can actually shorten your

muscles by only doing crunches or training for a six-pack. If you train in only one direction, you’re limiting your range of motion. Some would say our abdominals speak volumes to our mental health as well. You know when you get a gut feeling about something. Research tells us we hold a lot of anxiety in the abdominal region. Working the abdominals may help relieve some of this tension. As we know physical activity can relieve stress, tension, and anxiety. Connecting with your center may assist with understanding and listening to your gut feelings. Utilizing proper breathing while performing abdominal exercises will be essential for how you strengthen and tone this region. In my experience as a yoga instructor, I have learned many students are troubled when trying to identify their lower belly. The area from the pubic bone to the navel is challenging to identify because it’s an area not verbally expressed by many teachers or coaches. This area can also be referred to as the “sleepy area” of the abdominals. This area can be awakened with specific exercises and breathing techniques. Understanding and developing your core strength is one thing. Most importantly, maintaining the strength by being consistent in your exercises is paramount. Mix up your exercises so you don’t lose interest. I generally refer to our abdominal region as a corset. It supports your organs and your spine. Think healthy abs, healthy spine, healthy body and mind. Bronwyn Ison is the owner of Evolve Yoga. e-volveyoga.com 760.564.YOGA

Running On Empty

T

he other day as I drove around town running errands, my car signaled to me with a soft dinging sound. At first I did not know what message my car was trying to convey. Before long it dawned on me I was low on gas. My husband has the sweet habit of keeping my tank full so, it was the first time I heard the warning alert. Smart cars and phones conveniently tell us when things need refueling or recharging. Using this analogy, listen to your inner voice and you will discover your internal dashboard also provides warning signs. It sends off a signal when we are, as singer-songwriter Jackson Browne put it, “running on empty.” Stopping to refresh and renew is vital to our physical and emotional wellbeing. Recently a client told me she was so fed up and discouraged with her job search she knew she must take action. Rather than turn up the fire on job related activities, she pulled the plug. Ceci packed up her car with a suitcase, some favorite CD’s, her faithful dog Cinnamon and hit the road. She decided being out-of-work provided an opportunity to visit family living out-of-state. Aunts and uncles delighted to see her provided all the love and nurturing she needed to recharge. By the time she returned home Ceci felt an energy that had been lacking

prior to her trip. She jumped back into her job search and before long was scheduling interviews with companies on her target list. Pope Francis has been quoted as saying, “people who work must take time to relax, to be with their families, to enjoy themselves.” No matter how busy you think you are, you must step aside when your body signals burnout. Okay, I get it…a leisurely road trip is out of the question. You have other options. How about a trip to the spa, an early morning hike or just a slow stroll around the park? When frustration accelerates into unhealthy stress your warning bell will sound loud and clear. Do not ignore it. Do the prudent thing and call a time out. You may find it best to spend quiet time alone, or perhaps the perfect prescription for your situation is to surround yourself with your A-team, the people who care about you. Whatever your “go to” remedy is, make the time to refresh and refuel. Once you have enjoyed some downtime, a change of scenery, or the warmth of your loved ones, you will return to the task ready to give it your best shot.
