FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2017 – 5 P.M. TO 11 P.M. – THE DECK AT WESTFIELD PALM DESERT

n its 3rd year, and in conjunction with the premiere of ‘Palm Desert First Weekend,’ STREET is back on Friday, November 3, 2017 from 5 to 11 p.m. at Westfield Palm Desert located at 72-840 Highway 111 on ‘The Deck’ the third level parking structure near Macy’s. THE EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO ALL AGES! STREET is sponsored by The City of Palm Desert, Westfield, Palm Desert First Weekend and KMIR. The headlining musical performer this year is OKIM along with CAM ARCHER, YOUR ARE HERE, IRIE JUNCTIONS, eevaan tre, DJ ODC and CHOLA ORANGE. OKIM Electronic/Hip Hop artist OKIM hails from Corona, California. Since the age of 14, OKIM has been writing and producing his own music. He’s known for expressing himself through the avenues of music, fashion, photography and video. OKIM continues to innovate in all aspects. To kick off this new wave, his days are filled with writing and recording new music and filming videos, all in support of his cutting-edge 2017 debut EP release, The Wait Is Over. Check out the videos on YouTube for the songs “Pardon My Fancy” (featuring Tori Stylez) and “Swang,” both directed and edited by OKIM and Tori Stylez. OKIM is the definition of a courageous creator who is eager to break the silence with his unconventional outlook on life, music, and all things alike. OKIM is the future of new. youtube.com/OKIMmusic

YOU ARE HERE The efforts our local artists make in connecting with other artists from other areas continue to pay off. eevan tre is one of the desert’s true ambassadors. “We did a show at the Hard Rock in Palm Springs and eevan

approached us wanting to work. Now we definitely consider him a part of our music family.” Those are the words of Chris Cain, vocalist for STREET performer YOU ARE HERE. YAH includes DeAngelo “Deezy” Sherman on keys, Kameron “ Kam Andre” Hollis on drums, Hugo “Juice” Sanchez on bass, Andrew Freeman on guitar and Chris “Crisis” Cain on vocals. According to Cain, the YAH sound is a mix of Hip-Hop, R&B, and Pop. YAH thrives on their live performance. “We love to involve the crowd with catchy lyrics and unique transitions. Prepare to dance and scream!” They plan to perform a just released track entitled, “Where I Go.” Look for YAH in 2018. “We are in the process of finishing up our next EP coming out in January.” You can find YAH music on all major streaming platforms. CHOLA ORANGE The band Chola Orange is based out of Los Angeles. It features Kris Castro on keyboards and synthesizers, Noah Arroyo on bass, Art “The Wizard” Avila on guitars and effects and Greg Nelson on drums. In their own words, “Chola Orange is a spaceship of funk, sporting keyboards, synthesizers, electric bass, electric guitars and drums, with influences ranging from Parliament Funkadelic, Zapp and Roger, Sun Ra, horror movie soundtracks, and various jazz masters. Augmented with

a variety of pedals, electronics, and guest performers, Chola Orange is taking part in the revitalization of modern funk.” I spoke with Castro about the disturbing differentness that is Chola Orange. Castro gives the blended breakdown, “We’re from Czechoslovakia but our headquarters are in La Puente. We’re Mexican and Czechoslovakian or “Chexican” as we like to call it. We play funk music. We’re in our early to mid 30’s and have been a band for almost four years. We’re mostly instrumental but we do have some lyrical content. We perform songs using talk box effects. We’re here to entertain and make a spectacle of ourselves. We dress different and act weird.” Chola Orange is, um, unique to say the least. Both Castro and Avila both work for Fulltone Musical Products making guitar pedals so you can imagine what they come up with sonically. They are looking forward to releasing physical copies of their music and performing live as much as possible. “We’re coming out with a two-song 45 (single) in early December. We got hit up by someone to play STREET at the mall so we said ‘let’s do it.’ We played The Hood Bar & Pizza before. We’re gonna be playing the Fox Theater on 10/28 in Pomona and in Long Beach at the ‘All Good Things Festival’ at Alex’s Bar on 11/19.” continue to page 5

STAGE REVIEW OF ‘WOMAN IN BLACK’

“Doubtless, in such a place as this, with its eerie marshes, sudden fogs, moaning winds… any poor old woman might be looked at askance; once upon a time, after all, she would have been branded as a witch and local legends and tales were still abroad and some extravagant folklore still halfbelieved in.” - Woman In Black s Halloween draws near who doesn’t enjoy a Gothic horror story with ghosts, curses and mysteries to unravel? Stephen Mallatratt’s stage adaptation of Susan Hill’s novel, ‘Woman in Black,” is the perfect fit. The current production is presented by Desert Theatre Works at the Indio Performing Arts Center, in Indio. Woman in Black, is a play within a play, which is sometimes challenging to track. an audience that isn’t really there because it’s not the audience that’s present to whom he is addressing his comments. And in tracking a nonlinear storyline within the boundaries of a play within a play can add an additional layer of challenge. Such was the case with this show. And I admit that the first 10-15 minutes had me furrowing my brow and wondering what this show was about? But like many stories that sometimes get off to a slow start, if you can hang in there and give it a chance, the payoff is great. The Woman in Black, is a two person play that tells the story of Arthur Kipps, (Michael Pacas) a junior Attorney, who is tasked with organizing the papers of a deceased client, Mrs. Alice Drablow. Kipps is assisted in his story telling by an actor, (Adam Genesta) who Kipps has hired to help him stage the drama. At the funeral, Mr. Kipps, sees a young woman with a wasted face, dressed all in black, standing in the churchyard. The

villagers all refuse to speak of the Woman in Black or reveal anything about the secluded life Mrs. Drablow led. But after spending time in the haunted Victorian mansion of the deceased woman, he uncovers a box of letters that reveals her secret and tells the sad and haunting tale of the Woman in Black. He discovers that there is a tragic cost for anyone who learns this buried secret, but at this point, it’s too late. Daniela Ryan’s direction was absolutely phenomenal. Her staging skill elevated this production to a professional level. It has been a while since I’ve seen a show where I found the stage direction as captivating as the story itself. I loved Phil Murphy’s lighting. It was unique and spectacular. The shadowing and dimension brought even greater depth to this presentation. While I am not normally a huge fan of black box set design and imagining that a chair is a car, it absolutely worked with this production. Miguel Arballo’s sound

design provided just enough nuance to turn Mo Stein’s, simple black box set from a baron stage, to a horse and carriage traveling across the marsh towards an old Victorian house, shadows behind a scrim that gave glimpses of secrets long buried and fog creeping towards a cemetery. The combination of the direction, set, sound and lights took me back to Victorian era England. “Woman in Black,” can be seen through October 29th at The Indio Performing Arts Center, located at 45175 Fargo Street, Indio, CA. If you are looking for a fun night out during this Halloween season, this is the show to see. For show and ticket information: www. dtworks.org Dee Jae Cox is a playwright, director and producer. SOMETHING REALLY FRIGHTENING: THE BIG ONE!

G

hosts and goblins, mummies and monsters, devils and demons may be scary, but what’s truly frightening is a catastrophic earthquake. And, even more terrifying, is not being prepared. MAJOR FAULTS The mighty San Andres Fault runs the length of the Coachella Valley with many other active faults traversing the area that pose additional threats. Scientists warn that a devastating earthquake is long overdue and, in fact, may be imminent. SHAKEOUT DRILLS Last week, over ten million people across the state participated in the “Great California ShakeOut,” an annual event designed to prepare for survival and recovery from major earthquakes. Schools, businesses and communities throughout the nation participated on the same day -- at the same time -- to simulate a destructive earthquake. Worldwide, over 56 million joined in to be prepared for predicted significant disasters. The “Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill” is held annually on the third Thursday in October with a set time to match the numerical date. This year’s event was on October 19, and the simulation began in the morning at precisely 10:19. The Inland Southern California region, which includes Riverside, Imperial and San Bernardino counties registered over 1,440,827 participants. COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands participated with a program that included a lecture, drill scenarios and displays from local organizations. The lecture was held at the Rancho Mirage Library Monday. “Prepare for an Earthquake Like an Expert” featured Dennis S. Mileti, Ph.D. a professor emeritus at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Mileti has authored over 100 publications and his widely read paper “Disasters by Design” addresses the need for sustainable hazard mitigation, which has helped shape and lead government policy. With everything Mileti knows about earthquakes and natural disasters, he still chose to retire here in the CV, a high hazard area. He has lived in Rancho Mirage since 1999 and began preparing for the “big one” when he moved in. EXPERT ADVICE A video of Mileti in his nicely appointed home showed on the library’s big screen. In it he gives a tour pointing out the things he has done to be ready. Personable and charming, Mileti shared what his earthquake preparedness “lifestyle” looks like. Mileti opened his pantry to reveal canned food and other nonperishables. He talked about the equipment he has purchased, some of which includes a tent, portable evaporator cooler and solar generator. He was delighted to share his comfort items, a cocktail shaker and icemaker. With congeniality and good humor, Mileti made preparations seems doable and almost fun. The video airs regularly on Rancho Mirage television. Mileti stressed that plans need to be customized to your home and surroundings, such as the characteristics of your home, its propensity for shaking, the soil type it’s built on, its proximity to faults, and the unique personal characteristics of those who occupy the home -- including pets. For example, age needs to be considered. An older individual has more specific requirements than a teenager. Generating laughter from the full audience,

6

Mileti remarked how he was not willing to give up his treasured household knickknacks. But, because they are potential hazards and even life threatening, the bric-a-bracs need to be secured. He demonstrated how anything in his home that could be dangerous or deadly during a quake, was secured to walls or the floor. According to Mileti, plans should be “condition based.” Meaning, after the quake there are specifics to consider, such as fire. Plus, we need to account for living in a desert environment with either high or low temperatures, severe wind and torrential rain. Part of Mileti’s charm is that he has so thoroughly considered his needs and spent so much time formulating his survival and recovery plans in such detail, that he is at ease discussing anything and everything about dealing with a cataclysmic earthquake. Mileti intends to make his life as comfortable as possible after the catastrophic event. He has assembled amenities that will make his life more palatable when the quake occurs. His jovial demeanor and matter-of-fact attitude presented a welcome sense of calm that comes with being well prepared. MAKE PLANS Mileti is mindful everyday of being earthquake ready. He recommends being topic specific when drafting plans. Supplies and Equipment Plan -- food, medicine, cushions, etc.; Event Actions Plan -what to do when the earth starts shaking and when it stops; Damages and Injuries Reduction Plan -- what to do in the house to keep from being injured or dying in the quake; Lifestyle Recovery Plan -– how and where you live if your home is inaccessible; Financial Plan – costs affiliated with recovery, repairs and rebuilding. After the video, Mileti stepped to the podium and answered questions about earthquake insurance (get what you can afford), swimming pools (don’t count on them for water), and what to do during a 3:00am quake (stay in bed, roll onto your stomach and cover your head). For the “big one,” Mileti explained that the shaking would last 90 seconds! In comparison, the devastation and widespread damage from the Northridge quake was only seven seconds of shaking. According to Mileti, the State of California continues to work on being well prepared and Cal Trans is ready to get damaged highways reopened. He added that the Palm Springs Airport will not sustain major damage to runways allowing for supply drops. However, Mileti pointed out that getting to the supplies will be a challenge due to road damage and devastation. Mileti advises securing 10 to 14-days of supplies. Help, he said, will not be coming to your door. Mileti said it’s like packing your car and taking a two-week vacation in the desert. Mileti also encouraged working with neighbors, and trusts that there will be acts of kindness and “magnificent generosity.” Sunnylands provided a worksheet corresponding with Mileti’s plans along with website resources to help community members get prepared.

BY HEIDI SIMMONS

Michaeleen Gallagher, Director of Education & Environmental Programs for Sunnylands coordinated the ShakeOut event. Gallagher asked the audience to participate in an email survey to be sent at six and 12 months so they can evaluate how well people are planning, and to better understand why people fail to make plans. DROP, DUCK AND COVER At 10:19am on October 19, Sunnylands visitor center evacuated the beautiful, modern, glass building, and school children suddenly “dropped, ducked and covered” on the lush, manicured lawn. When an “all clear” was called, Palm Desert high school students wearing red scrubs, rushed into action simulating an emergency medical response. Some students were feigning bloody injuries and broken limbs. Karen Perez, Jasmine Olivas and Joshua Roderiguez are part of the school’s Health Careers Academy and felt confident that in an earthquake situation they could make a difference. The students agreed that it is important to have first aid skills and helpful to know some basic medical vocabulary in an emergency situation. Xavier Prep sophomore, Makai Quintana, and Shadow Hills junior, Yenel Henriquez displayed a homemade solar water distiller that can supply

COMMUNITY

drinking water from muck and sludge! The students were surprised by how effective the simple frame and glass structure worked. The project stimulated ideas and an awareness. With easily accessible materials, little projects can be created that will make a difference in emergency situations. BELOVED PETS The Animal Samaritans participated with information and materials to remind people to have emergency supplies for their beloved pets. The organization provided stickers to place in a window to inform first responders of how many and what kinds of pets belong at the location. Coachella Valley Water District was present to explain water resources and encouraged having a stored water supply on hand. The water agency suggests turning off the water supply to your home until specific instruction are released about water safety. CERT The City of Rancho Mirage is actively engaged in getting better prepared. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) has regular meetings and programs to educate and train volunteers and community members in basic disaster response skills. Other valley cities have CERT programs as well and Mileti encourages participation. The more you know, the better you can prepare and be ready to survive and recover. Recently in this country, and around the globe, there have been horrific, catastrophic, apocalyptic size disasters where people and their communities remain incapacitated. According to many experts, our valley may be next. It’s time. Don’t delay. Prepare!

EVENTS BY CRAIG MICHAELS ESCAPE GAMES AT THE RIVER ARE PUZZLING

I

n the almost 30 years I Have lived in the desert I have hear one message over and over again from young kids: “There’s nothing to do here.” The Escape Games at the River in Rancho Mirage are FUN for all ages and perfect for birthday, bachelorette, work and school parties. Escape Games have been around for over a decade but more recently are gaining mainstream popularity. The idea began with online point-and-click adventure games where a player has to escape a room using the clues, solving puzzles, and critical thinking. Although the concept has been around since the 80’s, the term “escape the room” or “escape game” came to form in the early 2000’s. Currently, there are many online escape the room games with different themes. Numerous companies have both online and mobile phone apps available. In most of them, there isn’t a time limit, but each level gets harder and harder. It’s no surprise that people began to bring these games to life. In most escape room games (both online and in real life), they involve a theme where players are emerged into a story line with an end goal in mind. Because of the physical nature, real-life escape games were able to add a time limit which brings out a competitive nature in some. Teams want to try to beat the fastest time or simply escape before the time runs out. Escape Games are an

excellent form of amusement. Each one has its own unique experience, different themes and puzzles. This will be the final weekend to play their latest Halloween themed game called “Curse of Tituba.” They have a scary version and a nonscary version. Following that they will be having their Christmas game back this year called “Night Before Christmas.” A perfect game for families to get together and have a blast solving puzzles together! I was also told they are having a new game this January coming out that is going to be a HUGE hit!! Stay tuned for details. So, if you’re looking for something unique to do with your friends, family, co-workers, or staff. Make sure you put Escape Games at The River on your list! For more information call (760) 668-9041. HALLOWEEN EVENT ROUNDUP 2017

BB’S 33ND ANNUAL HALLOWEEN BASH By Denise Ortuno It’s that special creepy time of year when thoughts of witches, vampires and ghosts fill the imagination and ghouls come out to play. And if you live in the Coachella Valley, it’s also when the most anticipated party of the year takes place, BB Ingle’s Annual Halloween Bash! BB’s parties are legendary, and have been entertaining desert party goers for decades. His Halloween parties in particular are enormously popular, giving attendees the chance to shed their everyday persona and dress up as whatever they want to for a night of decadent freaky fun. His parties are epic, and bring people from not only the desert area, but all over southern California to attend. Last year’s event, held at the Hard Rock hotel was enormous, bringing out well over 3,000 people to play. The costumes ranged from the demur, to over the top, with even a full-fledged Genie cruising around on his very own magic carpet willing to take pictures with anyone that would ask. You can probably find just about any costume at BB’s party; it is a coveted event that people look forward to, an event that stimulates all the senses. BB must have been born to bring people together, starting his career as a leader in social gatherings back in the 80’s when he and a few others founded BB O’Briens. The night spot was a constant in desert nightlife, and after its closure, BB began throwing special holiday/event parties earning him the Master of Events and Godfather of parties title that he has today. BB is also the 4 time winner of the CV Music Awards “Promoter of the Year” and was chosen as one of the CV Weekly’s twelve most Interesting and Influential Men in the Coachella Valley of 2016. This year BB’s 33nd Annual Halloween bash, will take place on Saturday night, October 28th and will be held again at the Hard Rock Hotel in downtown Palm Springs. The Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs boasts all of the flash and glamour affiliated with the famous chain. Amenities at the venue include swanky lounges (lobby & poolside), incredible dining, spa services and hip luxury accommodations all dripping with

the cool vibe that is part of the Hard Rock brand. The Hard Rock Hotel, which started back in 1971, sets its goals on bringing people together to party up a storm, it’s a shared goal that BB has been an advocate of all along, “I’m excited to have my big bash at the Hard Rock again this year!” said BB. The Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs and BB’s 33nd Annual Halloween Bash is a perfect match! The mega party, which is being produced by Ray Phillips and RSP Productions, will be spread out around the hotel, incorporating the elaborate underground ballroom, and poolside area. Three floors and seven stages of entertainment include heart pumping music from DJ’s: Ray Phillips, Anwaar, Aaron C, C3ASARE, DJ LF, DJ Journee, The Deep Ones, Tommy O’Connor, Paparazzi, plus others. The party will also feature the classic rock band Dude Jones, reggae band Irie Junctions, and a special performance by new singing sensation Kate London. There will also be a Latin room with band Elab Banda featuring Adrian Crush and his Michael Jackson tribute. For those of you who like to entertain, “Spookyokee” with T-Bone. Food will be available through hotel outlets and there will be plenty of bars to accommodate thirsty hell raisers. The party goes from 8:30 to 2am and guests must be 21 or older to enter. Tickets are priced at $25 per person in advance for general admission online at PartywithBB. com. Tickets are also available at: Vibes Boutique, Skitzo Kitty, Sensuality, and PSA Organica. For tickets visit www.partywithBB.com or call 760-880-1059.

UNCHAINED SUCCESS: AN INTERVIEW WITH BILL MEDLEY

CVW: You’ve been performing to packed crowds for 5 decades, can you talk to me about the evolution of that and how it’s different now than it was then? BM: “I started out at 22 and now I’m 77. It’s been remarkably smooth. We started out in ‘63 doing rhythm and blues and hard rock n roll. In ’65, we made “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” and became big ballad singers. I really have to give all the credit to the songs. When Bobby and I were young, maybe the kids were coming out to see Bob and Bill. Now they’re coming out to see Bucky and me, but really to hear those songs and relive them. I think that’s probably the main draw.” CVW: Your songs created the soundtrack for three of the most well-known and iconic movie scenes of all time. This is such a unique phenomenon. That must have changed the face of your fan base some. Can you speak on this? BM: “It was amazing. Top Gun came out in ‘86 with “Lovin’ Feelin’”. Then Dirty Dancing and Ghost followed, and we literally were as big as we had been when our hits first came out. We had a rebirth and in fact, were bigger than ever. Today it’s great because a lot of people influenced by those movies are coming to the show, along with people who grew up with the music. You couldn’t plan it any better.” CVW: You’ve gotten the Righteous Brothers back together with the addition of Bucky Heard after losing Bobby Hatfield in 2003. Does it feel like old times? BM: “It really kinda does. Like we say, on stage you can’t replace Bobby Hatfield, he

was one-of-a-kind; an exceptional singer. Bucky is, first of all, a great guy. He’s become one of my best friends. We have a lot of fun laughing. We are both football nuts. He sings these songs incredibly. He doesn’t try to be Bobby. In the last few months we’ve really found our groove. We’re doing great together. Bucky is filling in and he gets it but it’s just a really great Righteous Brothers show. We have a lot of fun and so will the audience.” CVW: You were inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 and you’ve won countless awards. So what has been the most rewarding aspect of your career thus far? BM: “We went on the first American Beatles/Rolling Stones tour – before “Lovin’ Feelin’”. They knew us from our first two albums that didn’t make it in the states nationally but were big on the West Coast. One of the greatest things Bobby and I did, was in ‘66, we were the opening act for Jack Benny in Lake Tahoe and got to do a 20-minute monologue with Jack Benny who was not only a legend but the best at what he did. It was a thrill for us to do that. That was the beginning of the Righteous Brothers, but now being able to come to the Coachella Valley and still draw big audiences is probably the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me. In the 60s, the audience gave us this success. I don’t even know that we earned it but they gave us this gift of success and now it’s up to us to give it back to them so they can relive those memories. So being able to do that right now is the most rewarding thing I can think of.” CVW: What can fans expect when they come to your show on October 28 at Fantasy Springs? BM: “Well, we do all the Righteous Brothers music, we’re not trying to be anything but. We do all the hits. We tell a few stories about going into the Hall of Fame and it’s a really entertaining show. We do a new song because it’s kind of fitting for what’s going on in the country right now called “Love Wins All.” It’s about let’s love each other, but that’s about the only new stuff. I can remember going to see acts that didn’t want to do any of their hits and only new stuff and I thought, ‘Why do you think I’m here? I wanna hear those hits!’” So do we. You can hear those hits on Saturday, October 28 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. Go online for more information and to purchase tickets: www. fantasyspringsresort.com.

COMEDY ANDREW “DICE” CLAY BRINGS HIS COMEDY TO SPOTLIGHT 29 CASINO SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28 PHOTOS BY IRIS HALL

A

ndrew “Dice” Clay started his career in the early ‘80s in New York. Initially, “the dice man” persona was only one of his characters, but it quickly became popular and he took it on full-time. Clay soon moved to Los Angeles and started landing roles in various T.V. shows. After a few years doing T.V. Clay again returned to stand-up and his career took off. By 1990, Clay had a HBO special, a staring role in a film written for him called The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, and became the first comedian to sell out Madison Square Garden. In recent years, Clay has been enjoying a renewed success in T.V. and film. He stars in a semi-autobiographical show on Showtime called Dice, he had a recurring role on Entourage, won the cooking show, My Kitchen Rules, and will be playing Lady Gaga’s father in Bradley Cooper’s film A Star Is Born. Some keys scenes of A Star Is Born were filmed right here in the Coachella Valley during last years Coachella fest and Stagecoach. Clay is taking some time out of his busy shooting schedule to do some live shows. One of which is right here at Spotlight 29 Casino on Saturday, October 28. Coachella Valley Weekly: Was acting something you were pursuing at the beginning of your career or was your focus just comedy? Andrew “Dice” Clay: “It wasn’t even about comedy. It was all about acting. Instead of going to an acting school once a week, I would be on stage every night developing myself as a performer. Whether it be acting or comedy, or whatever.” CVW: The Adventures of Ford Fairlane seemed as if it were written for you. Was that the case, or was it a lot of improv? Dice: “A lot of improv, but obviously there was a lot of writing for me. Ford Fairlane that used to be in newspapers. It was about a rock ’n’ roll detective. It’s funny… they’ve been playing it a lot lately. A lot of people ask if I’m gonna do another one. I go, ’what am I gonna do? Do it when I’m on a walker?’ Nah, I could do it, but studios don’t operate that way. I would definitely do another one.” CVW: Do you still enjoy being on the road, or would you prefer a residency? Dice: “You know what, I’m not happy when I’m on the road. I love being on stage, but I can’t take the traveling. I can’t take the airport. Everything at the airport is all fucked up. It takes the air out of ya. Once I’m on stage, I’m into it. That’s where I’m most comfortable. After all the travel, once I’m on stage, that’s where I’m at home.” CVW: How do you find the time to tour with your filming schedule? Dice: “You do it in-between. I try not to do it that much. I was doing a residency at The Trop(icanna) for like two years. The

touring was minimal. I don’t tour that much, I just did like 15 concerts on the East Coast. Now it’s back to Hollywood to do some of this acting stuff. I just got done filming Hap and Leonard for Sundance network which I had to go to Atlanta for.” CVW: Is it difficult for fans to differentiate between the “Dice” persona and you as an actor? Dice: “No… you know what? It’s what I always wanted to do. Since it’s what I want to do, I really couldn’t care less about that. People enjoy it. It’s a big compliment when you get a fan who says, ‘I loved you in Vinyl’ or ‘I loved you in ‘Blue Jasmine.’ Now I’ve got A Star Is Born coming out with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. I play the father in the film.” CVW: Did you do any of the filming out here in the desert? Dice: “I wasn’t there for that. Most of my filming was in L.A.” CVW: Any comedy specials coming out? Dice: “I don’t really want to do another special. I’m not saying I’d never do another special, but I feel good leaving it with Indestructible. That came out a few years ago.” Ticket Prices are $50.00/$40.00/$30.00 and are available at www.Spotlight29.com, Star Tickets (800) 585-3737, or the Spotlight 29 Box Office and Gift Shop. Doors open at 7 p.m. The show starts at 8 p.m.

BY ELENI P. AUSTIN

BEDOUINE (SPACEBOMB RECORDS) “

T

hough I’ve enjoyed the café haze, the play it as it lays, can lives so designed be sustained” That concise couplet feels like it should have been written by a jaded Angeleno, but it comes from a song by Azniv Korkejian, who goes by the musical alias bedouine. Perfectly apropos, as it’s a distaff version of a “bedouin” another name for nomad, which until recently, easily describes bedouine’s peripatetic upbringing. She was born in Aleppo, Syria in 1985 to Armenian parents and spent part of her childhood in Saudi, Arabia. Her father worked for a company that provided housing to Americans and expat families living and working overseas. She attended an American school, quickly became fluent in English and had a lot of American friends. In 1995 her family won a green card lottery and immigrated to America, originally landing in Boston. Five years earlier she had begun learning piano, now she took on the trumpet. Her family migrated to Houston and as soon as Azniv came of age she moved to Los Angeles for the first time. In the ensuing years she lived on a horse farm in Lexington, Kentucky, spent time in Austin, Texas and completed her education in Georgia, at the Savannah College Of Art And Design. Following her graduation in 2011, she relocated to Los Angeles, intent on a career in sound design as a music editor. She settled in Echo Park neighborhood. Once an ethnically diverse, densely populated, working class neighborhood east of Hollywood, it has recently become a hipster enclave. Although Azniv grew up listening to traditional Armenian, Greek and Middle Eastern music, by her early 20s she taught herself guitar and by then her influences leaned toward Nick Drake, Carole King and Townes Van Zandt. Later discoveries included Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Judee Sill Astrid Gilberto, Nilsson, Bob Dylan and Loretta Lynn. By day, she worked as a music editor, in the evening, she would hole up in her studio apartment; her guitar and a bottle of

wine were constant companions. She began composing her own songs. Huge inspiration came from Sibylle Green’s Colour Green album. The German singer/songwriter and actress recorded the songs on reel-toreel tape between 1970 and 1973, but abandoned her musical aspirations to concentrate on raising her family in America. At the beginning of the 21st century, her son Robby transferred the songs to CD and a copy found its way to J. Mascis, founder and front-man for Dinosaur, Jr. In 2006 the songs were collected and released on the Orange Twin label. Azniv went in search of a portable reel-to-reel machine and that led her to Gus Seyffert. A multi-instrumentalist and production whiz, he has worked with everyone from Ryan Adams and Beck, to the Black Keys and Sia. They ended up cutting one of her songs directly to tape. Pleased with the results, they continued to record more of her music when time permitted. Between her day job and his myriad commitments they recorded 30 songs over a three year period. Paring them down to ten tracks, they hand delivered the finished product to singer-songwriter, Matthew E. White. Along with being a musician, he had founded his own label in 2011. The venerable indie label quickly snapped her up, and her self-titled debut, bedouine, has just been released. The record quietly unfolds with the opening track, “Nice And Quiet.” Thrumming bass lines connect with strumming acoustic guitar, piquant electric riffs and a brushstroke beat. Azniv’s warm contralto licks at the edges of the arrangement, lush and inviting. As a relationship gets sticky, she wrestles with a fight-or-flight response, before hitting on this epiphany; “After all isn’t it the fear that we face, and all the bitterness we try and erase/All of the reasons to keep me at bay, are the same reasons that I should stay.” Several tracks navigate the rocky shoals of romance. “Dusty Eyes” is swathed in a feathery groove, languid electric guitar lattices over plangent piano notes, a ticktock beat and a swell of strings. Slow as molasses, her vocal inflection is equal parts tentative and reflective. She weighs her options, calculating the risks and trying to intellectualize attraction; “Your dusty, your dusty eyes they leave me pale and wondering, have I swam too far this time to make it back on my own dime?” The hazy arrangement crests to a close, weaving a tapestry of strings and guitar. On “You Kill Me,” a road trip serves as a panacea for heartache. Spare guitar, bass and keys are sweetened by pastoral strings and fluttery brass and woodwinds. She readily admits she’s over her head; “Don’t you think I know old friend, it’s not really the way things end/Typically you’re supposed to be staring right into me but something

about the way you see, honey, babe, you kill me.” The Countrified “One Of These Days” shares some musical DNA with the Starland Vocal Band’s ‘70s one-hit-wonder, “Afternoon Delight,” (but in a good way). Accented by sparkly guitar and a kick-drum beat, the sunny melody and arrangement underscores lyrics that advocate patience. “It’s true that I feel more for you than you do for me, It’s stunning how love has some delays/’Cause one of these days our love will take flight, we’ve got to get it and get it right, one of these days.” On “Heart Takes Flight,” it feels as though she is giving herself permission to experience joy. The somber and somewhat pensive feel of the melody and instrumentation, stripped down guitar and delicate woodwinds, is belied by the cautious euphoria of lyrics like “Heart take flight, I give you every right when he’s around/ Heart take sight, don’t you forget the light he brings about.” Here her piquant phrasing echoes Joni Mitchell’s jazzy shadings and the layered harmonies recall the Roches’ dissonant sororal blend. The best tracks here are “Back To You” and “Solitary Daughter.” The former is a breezy love/hate letter to her new hometown. Shimmery and incandescent, the irresistible melody nearly camouflages thinly veiled sarcasm like “California city parks, they talk in exclamation marks, I’m still dying to know what’s exciting.” The swoony strings, rumbling bass, rippling guitar and pulsating brass coalesce. The instrumental coda plays out like a Bacharach-ian suite.

The latter unspools like a restless manifesto. Whispery guitar darts and pivots through tremulous strings and stentorian horns. “I’m not an island, I’m a body of water,” She insists, “jeweled in the evening a solitary daughter.” Then she further asserts her independence by neatly cataloguing a list of solitary pleasures, allowing “I don’t want your pity, concern or your scorn, I’m fine by my lonesome I feel right at home.” Other interesting songs include the cryptic “Mind’s Eye” and “Summer Cold” which offers a brittle denunciation of the conflict in Syria. The jagged melody underscores her frustration as she quietly intones “I’ve had enough of your guns and your ammunition.” The album closes with “Skyline.” Bucolic and elegant it parses a failed relationship; “I grew a garden for the both of us, it turned into weeds, dirt and dust, I tried but I knew I couldn’t stay for you.” But she still offers a glimmer of hope; “…you’re still in my skyline and I think I’m in yours.” It’s a quiescent end to a remarkable debut. Aside from Gus Seyffert playing nearly everything, Jake Blanton tackled keys and drums, Darren Beckett and Josh Adams split the remainder of the drum duties. Guitar legend Smokey Hormel checks in for one track. Strings and woodwinds were provided by the Spacebomb Strings and the Spacebomb Horns. bedouine’s debut is an album that sticks with you. The memorable melodies and trenchant lyrics echo antecedents like Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake. It also conjures up more contemporary artists like Frou Frou, Hem, Laura Marling and Jasmine Rodgers. An autumnal album, it’s the perfect companion for solitary Sunday afternoons. Azniv Korkejian pulls you in and holds you close. Making you forget, for just a little while anyway, this chaotic, complicated world.

ACE 2017: AN ANNUAL EVENT FOR THE ARTS

T

he annual Palm Springs Art Museum Artist Council Exhibition (ACE) is currently on display at the Palm Springs Art Museum to December 13. The Artist Council is 350 members strong, many of whom are working artists. The yearly ACE is a juried show and is the highlight of the Artist Council activities. With over 300 entries, 43 pieces are selected for the exhibition. While all work in the exhibition is unique and available for sale, several pieces stood out for recognition. This year’s award recipients included: Terry Hastings, the Preston Ormsby Award, sponsored by The Ormsby Family, for his photograph; Overview; Veralee Bassler recipient of the Karen and Tony Barone Award for Sculpture, sponsored by Karen and Tony Barone, for her work Danzante #2; Nash Lawrason, Community Award, sponsored by Michael and James Mancini-Heath of Jack Farley’s Art Supplies and Debra Mumm of CREATE Center for the Art, for his work Dispenser of Dreams; Beth Adams, the Peggy Vermeer Award, sponsored by Artists Council Board of Directors, for her work Waterfall/Window; and Laurel Goddard Thomas, Palm Springs Art Museum Board of Trustees Acquisition Award, sponsored by Donna MacMillan, for her work, Martini Glass Abstract #3. The Preston Ormsby Award is in honor of Preston Ormsby, who passed away in 2011. Mr. Ormsby was a board member of the Palm Springs Art Museum Artists’ Council. He won an award in 2008 for Best of Show at the museum. This award is given in lieu of a Best in Show nomenclature. Ormsby recipient, Terry Hastings’s Overview harkens a new direction for Terry. The work is a helicopter view of a pool scene. The intricate assemblage of photographs creates a single image of cohesiveness “From at least twelve points of view, I created a collage that is focused and balanced from nearly every angle. In fact the work can be hung on all four sides, each giving a new perspective. Because the overall image has been shot in many smaller pieces, the eye can easily coalesce the entire image into focus,” stated Terry. “The Community Award,” said Debra Mumm, “was privately sponsored this year on behalf of CREATE Center, now that

Venus Studios Art Supply, has dissolved into a charitable arts organization. Jurors, not sponsors, selected the award. In years past the Venus Studios Art Supply Award was given to work that made use of weaving or photograph - pieces that didn’t use any traditional art materials that you can buy in a store; interesting choice for an art supply business.” But as Debra recognizes community and art belong together. Debra continued, “Personally as an arts activist, creating opportunity in the community for exhibition is something I have always supported. As an award winner in the permanent collection of the museum, I recognize the importance of celebrating our local talent.” Community Award recipient Nash Lawrason, in describing his photographic work Dispenser of Dreams, stated “When I think about art and photography, I often wonder how and why we achieve the images that we do. I always have a deep longing for something creative and much joy when it happens. We never really get lucky, but rather have times when our subconscious runs free and allows our heart’s wish. Sometimes it gives us more than we ever hoped.” Art often gives us far more that we could have imagined. The ACE is a celebration of art, community, and the creative spirit of the desert. BACCHUS, A MIRACLE REHOMING

S

ometimes dogs, like people, become better and happier in a new environment. Sometimes dogs, like people, take on the attitude of the humans around them. Sometimes dogs, like humans, miraculously transform when given a second chance. Bacchus’ life story did not start out well. He was born on a cold December night on a cement floor at the Riverside County Animal shelter in Riverside. His mother was a beautiful Bichon, labeled fearful” by the shelter staff not realizing the dog was about to give birth. Loving All Animals was looking for a rescue Bichon for adopter Doris Hale. A surprise awaited when I went to rescue the Bichon dog.... she was in a basket nursing four puppies less than a day old! The late wonderful animal advocate, Cookie Briney, fostered the family. The beautiful puppies were posted on Loving all Animals website asking, “Who’s the Daddy?” as none of them looked like their mother now named Valentine. Puppies are easy to adopt, and soon Bacchus, Cupid, Romeo, and Juliet went to new homes. However, all was not well at Bacchus home. Nine months later Loving All Animals received an email about his “issues.”

MEET ADELE This gorgeous feline is just 18 months old and promises to entertain you with her antics. She loves other cats. Adele was rescued by www.ForeverMeow.org, call (760) 335-6767.

MEET BREEZY Breezy is a wonderful Golden Retriever/Shepherd/Kelpie blend, 60 lbs of loyal doggie love. She adores people, but wants to be the ONLY pet in the home. Active young dog, needs a fenced in back yard. Call Loving All Animals (760) 834-7000, www.lovingallanimals.org.

Bacchus’ owner had a myriad of unbelievable complaints about the dog. Loving All Animals offers support and training consultation to help folks keep their pet. But this family had clearly decided they wanted Bachus gone. They reported Bacchus was “out of control”, periodically going into a “trance” in which he growled and attempted to bite them. They stated he chewed everything up including their furniture, and he urinated all over the house. They said the no local dog training class in the Long Beach area would admit Bacchus. Like most private rescue organizations, Loving All Animals’ policy is to accept return of their adopted dogs, ensuring they don’t end up back at the pound. How could we possibly find a foster home for a dog with so many problems? However, Bacchus appeared to be a happy animal, seemingly unconcerned when his owner drove away forever. Bacchus did well on our first temperament test, a trip to pet friendly PetSmart. Next stop was a dog park, where I carefully tested Bacchus’ reaction to the canines and the people. Bacchus played happily, and showed no sign of aggression. Jerry and Cheryl Miller recently lost their beloved dog Kramer. Still grieving, they

thought fostering might be a good way to have a dog without the obligation. They agreed to take a dog that might need special help. Bacchus wisely greeted them both with kisses. Jerry teasingly asked his wife, “Are you going to fall for this one?” Soon Cheryl and I looked out the window to spot Jerry playfully wrestling on the ground in the back yard with Bacchus. I sensed Bacchus might have already found his next forever home. Cheryl explains, “Bacchus has a way of looking at both of us that touched our hearts. It’s almost like he was pleading with us to just give him a chance, so we did.” The Millers credit Bacchus’ participation in a dog training class taught by Sandy Miller for Loving All Animals’ dogs. Cheryl adds, “If he was

allowed to be the Alpha, Bacchus would be a different dog. Sandy Miller’s training made him happier and more secure.” Bacchus was the star pupil in the class, an intelligent dog eager to learn new behaviors, a special dog now adopted by the Millers. We will never know for sure what Bacchus’ behavior was like with his first family. However, he has never shown aggression, never went into a “trance”, never was destructive, and never urinated inside the Millers’ home. Did Bacchus really have the serious behavior problems described by his first family? Were there some problems in that home that the dog was reacting to? Why did he change so dramatically in a new loving home? Bacchus’ most serious problem now is snatching Jerry’s socks from the laundry room. As Cheryl describes it, “Once they touch your heart, how do you give them back? Bacchus is a wonderful addition to our family.” To contact dog trainer Sandy Miller call (760) 360-4085 or tendortutor@msn.com. THE VINO VOICE

BY RICK RIOZZA

DRINK UP WITCHES!

A

scary thought—What’s more disturbing and frightful than an empty glass of wine on Halloween? The news hour aside, whether you’re by your lonesome stuck in some haunted house or with a bunch of zombieclad costumed characters, no one is happy when the wine bar is bare. A few years ago, we wine columnists had to grin and bear it bringing our own bottle of vino just to keep ourselves company while wearily searching out a truly chilling, startling and over-all menacing bottle of wine on the market. But those days of quiet wine packaging and labeling are over. It was getting near dawn when lights closed their tired eyes. I was awakened by a burdening brooding diesel sound—a hum of cacophonous bass notes. I rushed to the window and spied into a night of suspicious shadows. All I could quickly discern was a figure scurrying towards me carrying in both arms what appeared to be a small hoard of headless bodies or something! . . . Frozen in fear I flipped on the porchlight—it was only the UPS guy bringing up a few boxes of “Halloween wine” for me to review for this column. (Hey!—I’ll take wine delivered at 4:30 am anytime. Delivering wine at 4:30 pm in the desert heat is absolutely horrifying!)

You ask: Is Halloween Wine a real thing? Are there troubling wines out there that seem to infect the well-being of your soul? Is it like a Premier Cru Bordeaux—that you paid a mint for? We have heard of wine tales where the ancient of wine cellars have become a pit of pain and woe, where vintage wine bottles prey as a succubus to unsuspecting wine sucking out their freshness and energy. No—of course not, you knew it all along: it’s simply marketing. So as one can discern, there is plenty of witches brew and evil vino to go around as every other winery in town seems to be putting out their version of scary hootch! In a previous column titled, “Butter Town, USA” you’ll recall our little wine pop-up quiz where we offered around 20 or so wine names/labels that centered around buttery Chardonnay. Some real, some fake news, and some of you were actually flummoxed. This time, let’s throw out some variant “Halloween/Evil/Macabre” wine names & labels to ponder as real or not. Good Luck & Be Safe: The Were-Wolves of London Private Selection Portfolio; Blood Simple & Bloody Right!; Poizin Zinfandel—“A wine to die for”; Witches Brew Grand Cru, Witches Cauldron, the Splintered Broomstick Winery; Black Widow Wine, Bite My Neck, Zombie Walking Red; Psycho Syrah, Just Kill Me Red, If You See Kay, Candy Corn, Carnal Korn, Cat Scratch Fever. Ready for some more: The Velvet Devil, Devil’s Post-Pile, Phantom Red, Red Skulls from Twisted Vines; Franken’s Blend, Frankenstein’s Bitch Beaujolais, Pressed Rat and Warthog; Unsaved & Unhinged; Monster Mash, Monster Ball, Monster Town, USA.

All right! In the sentiments of Frankenstein, where they took a little bit of this, a little bit of that, perhaps the only requirement for a marketable Halloween wine would be a tasty blend—something fun, not that serious of a quaff: after all, aren’t we just partying over here. If, however, one were to go deeper into evil vino appreciation—yeah, I could make for some quick recommendations that will work for your entire costume week, and, work wonderfully on the table—alongside that bloody rare steak! 2014 Besieged Sonoma County, Old Vine California Heritage Varietals, ($14) I’m certain that at any blind ghoul wine tasting, the Besieged will take the horrific honors!! This is the wine for all ‘halloweenies”. You fans of Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Carignan, Syrah, Alicante Bouschet, and Barbera— well just enjoy this limited edition bottling that provides a dark, rich, full flavor profile with blackberry, black cherry, baking spices with a nice balance of acidity to keep it pouring throughout the meal. This wine is elegant, dry,well-balanced with all the complexities stirring from the heritage varietals. No tricks here but an absolute treat

for the bargain price of a focused wine from famed winemaker Joel Peterson, the “Godfather of Zin”, the consummate multitasker and perfectionist in the vineyard and winery. Now when it comes to both packaging and wine reverence, another wild wicked wine for the weekend to recommend is of course, 2014 SAVED Red Blend ($21). The bottle is etched rather than having a label. Around the edged ring it says “Reverence of beauty, eradication of doubt through systems of superstition, adversities exiled by incantations of compassion and tenacity of heart”. A collaboration of Wild Horse’s winemaker, Clay Brock, and renowned designer and New York tattoo artist, Scott Campbell. This wine over-satisfies those fans who enjoy a blend of Malbec, Syrah, Grenache, and Zinfandel: A full-bodied, smooth quaff of black and red fruits with a touch of coffee and fresh oak. And whilst were doing Halloween and red blends, no one can ever leave out RAVAGE Cabernet Sauvignon, Dark, Rich & Defiant. At only twelve bucks a bottle, you’d be haunted forever and a day if you dare not divvy this out on the night of nights! A full-blown Cab that you’ve been dying to try! For you white blend fans, the Prisoner Wine Company provides the 2015 Blindfold. This wine company continues to awe the moment with interesting blends of distinct quality and character in the surrounds of Chardonnay. The winemaker is right on with comments such as: inviting aromas of lychee, citrus, vanilla and peach tart that continue with other flavors of balanced butterscotch!—Spine-tingling! Rick is your ghost sommelier entertaining at all haunted venues and watching every move you make. Don’t be scared, contact winespectrum@aol.com for a price list of things to buy.

CHEF GEORGE’S PICASSO

T

ucked away in a small strip mall in Bermuda Dunes off the corner of Washington and Country Club Dr. is hidden foodie fun and entertainment at Chef George’s Picasso. Owned by famed Chef to the Stars George Ristich and his charismatic and lovely wife Lana, Chef George’s has become a desert favorite for those in the know. The restaurant itself spills over with exaggerated eastern European country kitcheree with tapestry type wall coverings, old world painting of the female form and twinkle lights. But that’s what makes it so special, that and their amazing food. The portions are as over the top as their décor, but in a seriously good way. The food at Chef George’s ranges from traditional Hungarian dishes like Beef Goulash and Chicken Paprikash, to other continental style items like Chicken Parmesan and Paella. One of my absolute favorites at Chef George’s is their Italian Chicken Livers. Now don’t let the “Liver” part of this dish give you pause, this specialty is phenomenal! The flavors abound with sautéed peppers, onions and mushrooms and are oh so good! Another Chef Georges signature dish is their Greek Salad. This salad is unlike traditional Greek Salads, as it has chopped lettuce, but to me, is the best Greek Salad I have ever had. It

has something to do with Chef George’s secret dressing that is kept under guard at all times. And although the portions are generous (you will be having a to-go box), there is always room for the homemade Apple Strudel made fresh daily. With all this wonderful food, excellent service and George and Lana to greet you, Chef George’s Picasso is easily one of the best dining spots in the Coachella Valley! Chef George’s Picasso has expanded in recent years to include a full bar, and a lounge providing entertainment. Diners can enjoy a variety of music in the lounge, or listen to it from the dining room.

Without a doubt, Chef George’s is not where you want to go if you’re in diet mode, or if your pants are a bit tight, they will most likely only get tighter. But Chef George’s is the perfect place for an out of the box romantic dining experience, or to have fun with your family, especially during the holidays. The whimsical décor, entertainment, over the moon friendly service and crazy sized portions are certain to be a highlight in your desert dining experience. THE ART OF FEAR NOW SHOWING: 78/52

Alex Philippe’s terrific documentary focuses on Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic shower scene in his groundbreaking horror film “Psycho.” Has any other movie set piece taken on the mythic power of that disturbing

18

NEW BLU FOR THE HOME THEATER ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL (1941)

sequence? Probably not. Hitchcock wanted to shoot on a modest budget and in black and white to imbue the film as “rough, raw and mean.” Furthermore, it was unheard of to kill off the star a third of the way into the story. That was what most disturbed the audience, adding a gut wrenching twist to the frenzied visuals of the stabbing in the shower. Documentary filmmaker Philippe has built an entire feature film around this truly legendary moment, in not only movie history, but also our shared pop culture. The title refers to 78 camera set-ups

and 52 edits. When I was taking film classes (USC), we did a count of the camera angles and cuts in the three minutes it takes for the onscreen murder to “unspool” and came up with 77 for the former and only 50 for the latter. But that is of no matter, really. The shower sequence was shot in 1959 between December 17 and 25. By the way, it has been pointed out numerous times that at no time is there a shot of the killer’s knife actually penetrating flesh. But a very careful frame-by-frame examination shows otherwise. For a fraction of a second, one brief shot shows the tip of the blade cutting Janet Leigh’s abdomen. No doubt Hitchcock wanted that subliminal shot (nice use of invisible prosthetics) to up the visceral terror of that frenzied attack. Excellent interviews and astute observations from Guillermo del Toro, Bret Easton Ellis, Eli Roth, Karyn Kusama, Walter Murch, Danny Elfman, Elijah Wood, Peter Bogdanovich, Janet Leigh’s daughter Jamie Lee Curtis, and Anthony Perkins’ son Osgood Perkins add much to our appreciation of this film. For me, the best interview was from Leigh’s nude body double Marli Renfro. Is she a CV resident? I never met Hitchcock, but saw him once at Universal Studios. He was standing on the front steps of his office-bungalow taking in the bright morning sun. He looked very dapper in his beautiful tailored (Sevile Row no doubt) black suit and crisp white shirt. His cheeks were rosy and he looked quite handsome and surprisingly fit for a portly man. I regret that I didn’t speak with him. I did notice that the collar of his shirt was oddly bent like the “dog-eared” page in a book. It was quite noticeable and out of place on a man so otherwise fastidious groomed and dressed. Later I mentioned the bent collar to someone who knew Hitchcock and worked with him at the studio. He said, “Hitch does that on purpose. In fact, he has his shirts made with one collar points bent upward because he believes it’s the flaw in an otherwise perfect setting that is of special interest.” If you love movies, this wonderful film is not to be missed.

From Paramount Pictures Archives comes this newly re-mastered 4K scan of what many consider the finest serial ever made. The 12 chapters (216 minutes) chronicle the exploits of Captain Marvel (Tom Tyler), the world’s mightiest mortal, as he combats the Scorpion, a hooded villain intent on obtaining six optical lenses that turn ordinary stones into gold! Highlighting the serial are the fabulous flying sequences created by Republic’s clever special effects team, Harold and Theodore Lydecker. Combining a wired dummy photographed against real backgrounds in natural sunlight, with spectacular take off leaps and landings supplied by ace stuntman David Sharpe. This was the first comic book superhero transferred to the silver screen (Max Fleischer’s animated Superman followed a short time later) and the resulting serial is still as exciting and entertaining as when it was initially released. Directed by the great team of William Witney and John English, who were responsible for making some of the greatest serials of all time including the legendary Daredevils of the Red Circle. The extra long Chapter One is where we meet all-American kid Billy Batson when he wanders off from an archaeological expedition in a sealed tomb and meets an ancient shaman called Shazam, who gifts Billy with the ability to acquire incredible powers merely by speaking his name. And voila, in a puff of smoke the boy becomes the mighty, caped, Captain Marvel! The commentary from film and comic book (“scholars”) is thorough, dense and fascinating. Kino-Lorber. Blu-ray. BOO-EEKS FOR KIDS

H

alloween is great fun for kids of all ages. There is something delightful about getting dressed up and freely becoming another character. It is such a pleasure to take on a new persona even if it’s just for one night while wandering the streets in the cool darkness seeking a trick or a treat. At an early age, we humans are oddly attracted to mysteries, the supernatural, the dark side, to strange people and places. The Bible is filled with frightening tales. Why do we like being afraid? How did we come to embrace that uneasy, unsettling and disturbing feeling a scary story can viscerally trigger or release? I am not qualified to answer such a deep psychological question. But, I do know it starts as a kid and books provide us with, not only a catharsis, but also a sense of control. Here are some new books for kids (and maybe their parents) to satisfy their love and intrigue of Halloween and all things creepy. The Magician and the Spirits by Deborah Noyes – Nonfiction (Viking Books, 160 pages) This book explores the afterlife with illusionist Harry Houdini and features vintage photographs, psychic mediums,

and spiritualists at the turn of the century. For decades, the master illusionist was preoccupied with things the eye could not see. Houdini was determined to investigate spiritual phenomena with an open mind and to uncover the truth about the afterlife. His quest put him in touch with some odd and fascinating characters: mediums who claimed communion with the dead, criminal hucksters, deluded scientists, and even famous figures like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. (For grades five and up) And Then There Were Four by Nancy Werlin – Fiction (Dial Books, 416 pages) After a building collapses around five teenagers, they discover something strange is going on. The unlikely group of allies comes together to save themselves when it appears their parents are plotting to have them all killed! Bestselling author Nancy Werlin returns to her Young Adult suspense

roots for this satisfying page-turning mystery. (Young Adult) The Bone Snatcher by Charlotte Salter – Fiction (Dial Books, 352 pages) Murder, madness, and sea monsters combine in this thrilling and atmospheric story about a young girl whose parents have sold her off as a servant to pay for their passage to London. Trapped in a decaying mansion the protagonist must uncover a secret to free herself and to keep from going mad. This book is perfect for Neil Gaiman and Tim Burton lovers. (Grade level 5 - 9) The Last Kids on Earth and the Nightmare King by Max Brallier – Fiction (Viking Books, 272 pages) On the New York Times bestseller list and with more than 1 million copies of the series in print, kids have much to love and

SAFETY TIPS

fear in this zombie, monster mash-up. When the Nightmare King and an ancient evil won’t rest until the planet has been devoured, the last kid on earth must decide who and what his friends really are. Wonderful illustrations keep this book fun and light. (Grade 3 to 7) The Underground Ghosts – The Haunted Library Super Special by Dori H. Butler – Fiction (Grosset & Dunlap, 192 pages) Edgar Award winning author Dori Butler gives us the 10th and final title in her nottoo-scary mystery series. When a ghost is discovered in the local library during Halloween festivities, returning characters Kaz and Claire investigate. They discover ghostly activity in the city’s subterranean passages. (Ages 6-8) Childhood reading takes us to places both light and dark. Young or old, it is an easy way to examine our fears and explore our feelings of being powerless. The best scary stories deliver new experiences, thrills and chills while providing insight into what motivates good and bad characters -- even in the real world. And, that can be terrifying. Happy Halloween!

UNDER-40 BILLIONAIRES

L

ast week, Fortune Magazine released its annual list of the 400 richest people in the world. It is no surprise that the wealthiest people continued to be Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft; Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, and; the sage of Omaha, Warren Buffett. Let’s take a look at the fourteen wealthiest people to make the Forbes 400 list who are under 40 years of age: First up is Mark Zuckerberg, 33, founder of Facebook with a net worth of $71 billion. Zuckerberg’s net worth is greater than the other thirteen under-40 billionaires combined. Forbes also ranks Zuckerberg as one of the ten most powerful people in the world. He and his wife, Priscilla Chan, plan on giving away at least $45 billion of their net worth over their lifetimes. Their focus in charitable giving is in “advancing human

potential and promoting equality.” Second on the list is Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, 33. While Moskovitz is no longer associated with Facebook, his 2.3% share in Facebook is responsible for the majority of his $13.6 billion net worth. The youngest and wealthiest inheritor on the Forbes 400 list is Lucas Walton, 31, with a net worth of $13.2 billion. Lucas is the grandson of Sam Walton, founder of WalMart. He spends most of his time in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and has a bachelor’s in Environmentally Sustainable Business from Colorado College. Scott Duncan, 35, is fourth on the list with an inherited net worth of $5.5 billion. He gained his fortune upon the death of his father, Dan Duncan, co-founder of Enterprise Products. Enterprise Products is an oil and gas pipeline company based in Texas. Fifth on the list is another young inheritor, Colombian Andres Domingo, 39, who is worth $4.8 billion. Andres father, Julio, was one of the largest shareholders in SABMiller which is now known as Anheuser Busch InBev. The three entrepreneurs responsible for AirBnB share sixth place on the list with net worths of $3.8 billion each - Nathan Blecharczyk, 36, Brian Chesky, 36, and Joe Gebbia, 34.

DALE GRIBOW ON THE LAW

HALLOWEEN IS ABOUT MORE THAN CANDY

Y

ou thought Halloween was for kids and was synonymous with Candy? You thought nothing else happened on All Hallows Eve? Sure we all grew up trick or treating and bringing back bags of candy, but that is not all that happens on Halloween. I remember as a kid mapping out the blocks so that we could go around the block/s in an organized fashion thus passing my home. I would drop off a bag, empty it a hit the next set of blocks. Growing up in Toluca Lake we would always arrange to hit Bob Hope’s home first and then again at the end of the evening. At first Hope had his butler come to the door with a sterling silver tray of Silver Dollars and later Chocolate Eclairs. It was the one “treat” that never made it into the bag. It disappeared before we got to the sidewalk. But today would you let your kids eats a treat that was unwrapped? Of course not, things have changed. But the one thing that has not changed is people using the evening as an “excuse to party and drink”. I remember families inviting us inside to check out our costumes... while they threw back a few brewski’s. At some point many of these guests left to go home and were drunk. That is

an accident waiting to happen with all the kids running/darting into the street. I think society is more aware today and often take Uber or Lyft. However here in the greater Palm Springs we have more DUI fatalities than anywhere else in California...per capita. So if you are driving home after drinking and get in an accident with a kid, two things take place. You will have to hire a lawyer if arrested for a DUI or when the victim sues you for damages/death of their child. In both instances you ask the question who do I hire to help me that will be competent and honest with the experience to do a good job for me. For years I had a radio show in LA titled “Accidentally Yours” that answered that question. On each show I would suggest that “people don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan”. The last things you want is to have to make a major decision under pressure. Thus I tell the readers of my weekly legal column... plan now! Decide now who you would call if arrested for a DUI or if you or a loved one was in an accident. We all keep the names and number of vendors to assist us in case of an emergency...........a plumber, an electrician etc. Why not add to that list the lawyer you would call so you can make an intelligent

October 26 to November 1, 2017

The newest addition to the list is Chicagoan Rishi Shah, 31, founder of Outcome Health. Following the Initial Public Offering of his company in May, his net worth was $3.6 billion. Outcome Health markets drugs to doctors through video screens installed in doctor offices. His net worth can be expected to drop significantly next year following a Wall Street Journal report that Outcome Health had been misstating its numbers in order to overcharge pharmaceutical companies. Coming in tenth is Robert Pera, 39, founder of Ubiquiti Networks, a communications technology company. Pera attended UC-San Diego and received degrees in Electrical Engineering and Japanese. While working at Apple, he discovered ways to boost WiFi coverage in underserved areas. As Apple was not interested in the idea, in 2005 Pera with only $30,000 in cash and credit card debt

founded Ubiquiti. Today Pera is worth $3.2 billion and owns the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association. Snapchat co-founders Bobby Murphy, 29, and Even Spiegel, 27, are both worth $3.1 billion following the Initial Public Offering of their company. Both live in Venice, California. Rounding out the list is co-founder of Napster and Plaxo, Sean Parker, 37, at $2.6 billion and the older brother of Andres Domingo, Julio Domingo III, 32, worth $3.2 billion. To be included in the Fortune 400 list, one’s net worth must be at least $2 billion. As a group, the 400 richest people have a combined net worth of $2.7 trillion, up 12.5% from last year. To put that number into perspective, if these 400 people were to give their net worth away to every man, woman and child in California, each Californian would receive approximately $63,000. decision now and not when you’re pressured! In both instances the best thing you can do is to Keep Silent. Silence is golden and handcuffs are silver when it comes to interrogation on a DUI. With either case you want to talk to your lawyer first and to stay OFF OF SOCIAL MEDIA. FB and other forms of social media have made it very easy for investigators and insurance adjusters to learn about YOU. If you have been in an accident and tell the doctor you hurt everywhere and can’t do anything then you certainly do not want the wrong person to see you talking about golf or tennis. Likewise you do not want the wrong person to read about your comments about the accident or driving.

So moral of the story is... DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE, CALL A TAXI OR UBER......... IT IS A LOT CHEAPER THAN HAVING AN ACCIDENT OR DUI AND CALLING ME ......... SO DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER DURING THE HOLIDAYS. Suggestions for future articles: 760-8377500/dale@dalegribowlaw.com. NHL AND MLB SHOWING BETTING SIGNS TO PROFIT FROM…

N

HL scoring is up over half a goal per game this season compared to last and almost a full goal more than two seasons ago. That’s been a boon for hockey bettors siding with the Over. NHL games are averaging 6.11 goals per contest entering Thursday night’s slate on the ice. Last year, games average 5.45 markers and 5.33 in the 2015-16 campaign. The Over is cashing at a 59.34 percent win rate after the first 94 games of the regular season and that’s despite a dramatic increase in games with 6-goal totals. There were no games with totals higher than 5.5 for all of the 2015-16 season and only seven games with six-goal or higher over/under lines in the 2014-15 campaign. Oddsmakers have already given 15 games a total of six goals and one a 6.5-goal number this season. Teams to keep an eye on: Toronto Maple Leafs Over/Under record: 6-1 The Leafs are first in the league in goals scored and are surrendering over three goals per game to opponents. The average total goals scored in a Toronto game is an even eight after the club’s first seven contests. The Leafs own the league’s second-best power play with a 30 percent success rate and second-year center Auston

Matthews leads the Buds in scoring with six goals and four assists. Florida Panthers Over/Under record: 5-0 The Panthers are averaging 3.4 goals per game and are giving up about four every time they step on the ice. Florida is the fifthworst penalty killing team in the NHL and starting goalie Roberto Luongo is carrying just a .901 save percentage. Minnesota Wild Over/Under record: 4-0 The Wild have only played four games

so far this season but in that short sample size, we’ve seen the red light lit 30 times – 15 for the Wild and 15 for their opponents. Minnesota is in the Top 10 in goals for/ against. No. 1 netminder Devan Dubnyk owns a bloated 3.70 goals against average and an embarrassing 8.94 save percentage in three starts this season. Winnipeg Jets Over/Under record: 5-1 The Jets thought Steve Mason was going to be their starting goalie but backup Connor Hellebuyck is clearly outplaying his teammate. Winnipeg has surrendered 18 goals in the three games Mason’s started and only five in the three starts Hellebuyck’s been given. ---------------------------------They say home is where the heart is and in the baseball postseason, it’s also where the money can be found. The most dominant betting trend of the 2017 MLB playoffs so far is home teams having their way with the visiting competition. Baseball teams playing on their field are 13-3 this postseason. For perspective, home teams went 18-17 last year in the playoffs and 19-17 the year before. If you’d bet $100 on the home team in all 16 games so far this postseason, you’d

THE LOVE STORY OF MARCIE LEGARRETA & ERNESTO MARTINEZ

E

mpathy: the ability to put yourself in someone’s shoes and experience life through their eyes. Do your best to put yourself in these shoes. You have Type 2 diabetes and are in need of a kidney transplant. You had to stop working in 2015 after being diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease. Some of the symptoms you have had to cope with include; fatigue, edema and shortness of breath, kidney pain felt in your back, sleep problems due to muscle cramps or restless legs, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and nerve problems. On top of all this you have to withstand dialysis three times a week and are near blindness. This is the current life situation of Marcie Legarreta.

22

Thankfully, Marcie didn’t have to look far for a kidney donor. “I have an angel on my side. The love of my life, Ernie, is donating his kidney to me”. Ernesto Martinez is Marcie’s hero and significant other. “I have gone through a lot of testing. I am honored to be able to donate a kidney to my best friend. I have seen Marcie fight every day to live her life to the fullest. She had served this community passionately as a social worker for the County of Riverside and a child abuse and neglect consultant for 16 years. Marcie has put her best out there to help those in need and has given 110 percent. I want to bless her by giving her a kidney. She deserves so much more and I know once she receives it she will continue to work to

serve children and families in need”. Many in the criminal justice system and children’s services, including myself, have had the honor of working with Marcie in the past. She spent many years protecting children’s’ well-being, helping families reunify as well as finding permanent placements for children needing a home. In mid-November, Marcie, Ernie and their respective surgical teams will enter Loma Linda University Medical Center to complete the transplant. The couple, who reside in Bermuda Dunes, have a supportive network of family, former fellow employees and friends. Although it seems the biggest challenge they face is the transplant itself, there is the ongoing stress of finances. Ernie shared, “I have tried to work through all of this but employers won’t allow so much time off. It has been difficult for us financially”. Both Marcie and Ernie will require long-term follow up care once the surgery is complete. Ernie has not been able to work due to the demands of testing for compatibility and what he has needed to do to be fit for surgery. Because of this, they are asking for temporary help from the community through a GoFundMe account. The goal is $7,500 and will be used to help them with multiple trips to and from Loma Linda for post-op care as well as cover the costs of utilities and other miscellaneous bills. They will also need help in paying for caregivers for both of them during a three

be up $617.53 or 6.17 units. Home favorites are an even better 11-1 straight up and 9-2 against the runline. The Chicago Cubs are -160 home chalk tomorrow against the Washington Nationals in Game 4 of series while the Cleveland Indians are -180 home faves against the New York Yankees in the late game. The postseason is supposed to be time for money arms to deliver, but that’s not what we’ve been witnessing this month. MLB starting pitchers own a collective 8.53 ERA in the playoffs and leading Cy Young contenders like Chris Sale, Corey Kluber and Clayton Kershaw have all gotten chased out of games early. Not surprisingly, the over is 6-3 in the American League playoff games and 4-3 in the National League. The Dodgers, who will play the winner of the Cubs-Nationals series, are the new favorites to win the World Series at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas. The Astros are the second favorite at +225 and will play the winner of the Yankees-Indians series in the ALCS. Bet the home teams and I like Dodgers to finally break thru.

month period after surgery. Coachella Valley Weekly, together with Chris Spellman, founder of Comic Con Palm Springs and friend of the family, would like to ask the community to rally around Marcie and Ernie as they continue their fight. Marcie has been through a lot in the past year. “I lost my brother, Marcos Legarreta, to diabetes a year ago October 27th. He was on dialysis and he was only 55 years old. My dad died a year ago of Parkinson’s disease. In my opinion those are two of the primary problems in the Coachella Valley. There is limited support for people with Parkinson’s. Once I am able, I would like to start a local chapter for Parkinson’s. I’m affiliated with the New York chapter currently. Many in the Latino community need the education. I want to do a lot more outreach. If you’re not knowledgeable you’re not asking the right questions”. According to the Centers for Disease Control at least 24 million children and adults in the United States have type 2 diabetes; out of a total of nearly 26 million who have either type 1 or type 2. www.gofundme.com/nqsurt-kidneydonor www.diabetes.org www.kidney.org

That’s why I encourage you to take an approach articulated by the Russian mystic Anne Sophie Swetchine: “To love deeply in one direction makes us more loving in all others.” Halloween costume suggestion: a lover celebrating a sacred union to the love of your life, to God or Goddess, or to a symbol of your most sublime ideal. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “Yes, We Have No Bananas” is a silly novelty song that became a big hit in 1923. Its absurdity led to its wide use for humorous effect. For example, on the kids’ TV series The Muppet Show, puppets made out of fruits and vegetables sang parodies of the tune. That’s why I find it droll that the “No Bananas” songwriters stole part of the melody from the “Hallelujah Chorus,” the climax of classical composer George Handel’s religious oratorio Messiah. I’d love to see you engage in comparable transmutations, Taurus: making serious things amusing and vice versa. It’s a time when you can generate meaningful fun and playful progress through the art of reversal. Halloween costume suggestion: a tourist from Opposite Land or Bizarro World. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In the next two weeks, you may have to navigate your way through careless gossip, distorted “facts,” superficial theories, hidden agendas, fake news, and official disinformation. To prevent problems in communication with people who matter, take advantage of the Halloween spirit in this way: Obtain a bicycle helmet and cover it with aluminum foil. Decorate it with an Ace of Clubs, a red rose, images of wrathful but benevolent superheroes, and a sign that says “No Bullshit Allowed.” By wearing this crown, you should remain protected. If that’s too weird for you, do the next best thing: Vow to speak the whole truth and nothing but the truth, and ask to receive the whole truth and nothing but the truth. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Watch out for a fake pizza-delivery driver who’s actually trying to issue you a legal summons. Be careful you don’t glimpse a blood red sky at dusk, in case it’s a prophetic sign that your cell phone will fall into a toilet sometime soon. Beware of the possibility that a large bird carrying a turtle to its nest accidentally drops its prey into a rain puddle near you, splashing mud on your fancy clothes. JUST KIDDING! All the scenarios I just described are stupid lies. The truth is, this should be one of the most worry-free times ever. You’re welcome, of course, to dream up a host of scary fantasies if you find that entertaining, but I guarantee that they’ll be illusory. Halloween costume suggestion: an indomitable warrior. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): What is the material object you want most but don’t have? This is an object that would serve your soul’s highest purposes, although not necessarily your ego’s. Here’s another question: What evocative symbol might help keep you inspired to fulfill your dreams over the course of the next five years? I suggest that you choose one or both of those things to be the inspiration for your Halloween costume. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Did you get a chance to go to circus school when you were a kid? How about magic school? Or maybe detective school or time-travel school or superhero school? Probably none of the above, right? Much of your education revolved around what you HAD to learn rather than what would be fun to learn. I’m not saying it was bad you were compelled to study subjects you felt ambivalent about. In the long run, it did you good. But now here’s some sweet news, Virgo: The next ten months will be a favorable time to get trainings and teachings in what you YEARN to learn. Halloween costume suggestion: a student. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Now is an excellent phase in your cycle to scour bathrooms, scrub floors, shampoo carpets, and wash windows. But

the imminent future will be an even more favorable period to purify your motivations, tonify your emotions, purge your less-than-noble agendas, calm down your monkey mind and monkey heart, disinfect the moldy parts of your past, and fact-check the stories you tell about yourself. So which set of tasks should you focus on? It may be possible to make great strides on the second set as you carry out the first set. But if there’s not enough time and energy to do both, favor the second set. Halloween costume suggestion: a superhero who has wondrous cleaning powers; King Janitor or Queen Maid. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “You never sing the same song twice,” said chanteuse Billie Holiday. “If you sing it with all the same phrasing and melody, you’re failing your art.” That’s an extreme statement, but I understand what she was driving at. Repeating yourself too much can be debilitating. That includes trying to draw inspiration from the same old sources that have worked in the past. I suggest you avoid this behavior in the coming days. Raise Holiday’s approach to a universal principle. Fresh sources of inspiration are available! Halloween costume suggestion: a persona or character unlike any you’ve ever imagined yourself to be. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): How can you enjoy the lavish thrills of rebirth later unless you die a little inside now? It’s the trickiest phase of your cycle, when your energies are best used to resolve and graduate from the unfinished business of the last ten months. I suggest that you put the past to rest as best as you can. Don your funniest sad face and pay your last respects to the old ways and old days you’ll soon be leaving behind. Keep in mind that beauty will ultimately emerge from decay. Halloween costume suggestion: the mythical phoenix, which burns itself down, then resurrects itself from its own ashes. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): There are no such things as magic healings and miraculous redemptions and impossible breakthroughs. Right? Hard evidence provided by science precludes the existence of exotic help coming from spiritual realms. Right? Well, no. Not right. There is in fact another real world that overlaps the material world, and it operates according to different laws that are mostly imperceptible to our senses. But events in the other real world can have tangible effects in the material world. This is especially true for you right now. Take advantage! Seek practical answers and solutions in your dreams, meditations, visions, and numinous encounters. Halloween costume suggestion: whitemagic sorcerer or good witch. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Many years from now, in your last hours on earth, you will have visions that show you how all the events in your life were crucial to your life story. You will understand the lesson that was provided by each twist and turn of your destiny. Every piece of the gigantic puzzle will slip into place, revealing the truth of what your mission has been. And during that future climax, you may remember right now as a time when you got a long glimpse of the totality. Halloween costume suggestion: the happiest person on Earth; the sovereign of all you survey; the wise fool who understands yourself completely. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You might be able to pass for normal, but it will be better for your relationship with yourself if you don’t. You could try to tamp down your unusual urges and smooth your rough edges, but it will be smarter to regard those urges and edges as fertile raw material for your future happiness. Catch my drift? In the coming weeks, your main loyalty should be to your idiosyncratic intelligence. Halloween costume suggestion: the beautiful, interesting monster who lives in you. Homework: Name your greatest unnecessary taboo and how you would violate it if it didn’t hurt anyone. CANNABIS CORNER

BY JASON HALL

A MOONLIT MOVEABLE FEAST EVENT

T

his week’s Cannabis Corner is going to be something new. I am not a cannabis user. Not recreational, and not medicinal. I am however, an advocate for cannabis use both recreationally and medicinally. This week, I had the privilege of not researching my topic online, but researching by directly asking an educator. Barbie Sommars, aka Faerie Jane (adorable pun intended), has been a big part of cannabis education for a while now. She is the former COO of Mary Jane University and Former Founding Vice Chair of the Orange County Chapter of Women Grow. This week we will be discussing Moonlit Moveable Feast. This will be part one of a two part feature on Moonlit Moveable Feast. I will be sharing my experience as a non cannabis user partaking in a beautiful cannabis ceremony in the coming weeks. Moonlit Moveable Feast is an upscale three-course medicated dinner taking place in Joshua Tree. Barbie explains the experience as “‘Moonlit’ because obviously, it’s under the full moon, ‘Moveable,’ because we will be changing locations and be able to explore the desert with roaming educators, and finally ‘Feast’ because not only will you partake in an amazing dinner, but your eyes will feast on the beautifully natural moonlit desert, and you will be able to sample a few different strains.” As a non-user (is that correct?), I’m already salivating at the description. The surroundings and experience are the proverbial Pavlovian Bells. Barbie and her partner, Lindsey Jones, have definitely caught my interest. The event location will not be revealed until the day of the dinner. This is an automatic plus for me. It is very reminiscent of the mid to late 90s desert parties and raves. Half the fun was the anticipation of being in “the know.” This is a closely guarded secret because Barbie and Lindsey don’t want the experience to be tainted by a curious crasher who decides to bring their own medication to the party. This event is planed to the “t.” The wrong medication can alter a diner’s experience. If the attendant decides to partake in their own medication, that is fine, but the key is to trust the planners. As Barbie explains, “Trust is a big part of medicating properly.” In my almost hour long conversation with

Barbie, I learned so much. My knowledge was mostly based on Cheech & Chong movie and Half Baked. I smoked a bunch in high school for recreational purposes and knew it as “good weed” and “bad weed.” Both got you high, but “good weed” took you to the next level. When I started being able to afford “good weed,” I started getting paranoid and feeling every ache and pain. Shortly after, I stopped completely. I have heard rumblings of the science behind cannabis, and now I feel somewhat knowledgeable after our conversation. I honestly feel like “weed” is a bad word. It is so much more than “weed,” it is medication. I learned in its raw form, CBD-A and THC-A, it reacts differently than in its burned or smoked form, CBD and THC. I learned of different strains and hybrids which react differently in different people. The list goes on. If you are like me, a complete novice, or are an expert, I’m sure Moonlit Moveable Feast will be enjoyable. Tickets to this ultra-exclusive experience are somehow still available. The availability is very limited. If you have any connection to the energy of our planet, do yourself a favor and join Lindsey and Barbie on Saturday, November 4 in Joshua Tree. Joshua Tree exudes positive energy by itself; team that natural energy with the positivity of extremely educated people and the natural light of a full moon, and it will be an experience of a lifetime. LIFE & CAREER COACH BY SUNNY SIMON

WHY YOUR JOB SEARCH MAY BE ON MUTE

T

he silence is killing me. This is a common complaint I hear from job seekers quite often. Yes, I get it. You sent off your market-ready resume for a position you feel has your name on it and a month has gone by without even a phone screen. Or maybe you got to second base and aced an interview with the hiring manager three weeks ago, but since then experienced dead quiet. Whatever the scenario, playing that waiting game is frustrating. But why are you being ignored and rebuffed? Let’s take the resume situation. I tell my clients repeatedly, you can be the most ideal candidate on the planet but if you do not have the right key words and phrases in your resume, it is destined to end up in a big black hole. Applicant tracking systems are used by many mid-to-large sized companies. This means software scanners are looking for a match. Your resume achievements must align with the job description. You can increase your chances of meeting the criteria by writing a short, concise, customized cover letter sprinkled with additional key words. You noticed I stated customized. That means one size does NOT fit all. Craft a cover letter specifically tailored for each job. Your objective is to stand out from

the competition. Do not repeat facts from your resume (recruiters don’t have time to waste and hate redundancy) instead showcase your communication skills and let your unique voice shine through. What about that interview you felt so pumped about? Did you send a thoughtful thank you email, letting the employer know you enjoyed learning more about the position and reinforcing your interest in the job? You may have been one of five stellar candidates who all aced the interview. Writing a profession note (again, be brief) repeating your belief that you are a good fit keeps you on the radar screen. Still no answer two weeks after your email? Pick up the phone and politely check in to ask their timeline on making a decision. At this point, you have nothing to lose, you deserve an answer and it may be good news. If after all your dedication in creating a top notch resume, cover letter, thank you note and follow up, you find the job was awarded to another candidate, do not take it personally. There is a company out there in need of your talents. Keep going and you will land successfully. I promise.
