“
W
e want our customers to achieve optimal health,” said Starkie Sowers, Director of Education, Clark’s Nutrition & Natural Foods Market. „We are absolutely committed to assisting and educating our clientele.“ On two consecutive Saturdays, November 12 and 18, at 3:00 pm, Clark‘s Nutrition in Rancho Mirage will hold a free workshop on essential oils. “The essential oils have been around since the beginning of time,” said Sowers. “There are so many effective uses and such a variety of oils, we want to help people better understand how they can use them every day.” Sowers will lecture on essential oils and winter health. “It will be a spa day. We’ll have handouts, samples and demonstrations,” said Sowers. As part of their commitment to education and a healthy community, Clark’s Nutrition holds free classes, lectures and seminars throughout the year. “We take a holistic approach that includes diet, prevention, alternative therapy and nutritional supplements. We’re here to help people find ways to live and feel better,” said Sowers. Clark’s also is available to do health related presentations for local businesses and organizations. Clark’s Nutrition slogan “Live Better, We Can Help,” greets customers on the front door of the 25,000 square foot store that includes healthy candy to organic wines and everything in between from environmentally friendly paper products, fine meats, natural cosmetics, bulk herbs, over 100 bins of nuts and grains, trays of wheat grass, fresh produce, vitamins and numerous essential oils. Located at the south-west crossroads of Monterey and Dinah Shore in Rancho Mirage, Clark’s is in the middle of the shopping complex. The free-standing
market has over 20,000 plus thoughtfully selected products in its well-stocked inventory. Every item in the store is carefully considered by Clark’s staff for the purest ingredients. Committed to bringing the best merchandise to the store, Clark’s checks and scrutinizes the labels, knows the source of each and every product and the nature of the company’s business practices. “We pride ourselves in filtering through everything for our clientele,” said Sowers. “We are very particular about what we sell. Our customers know they can trust what’s on our shelves.” Along with quality products, Clark’s strives to connect with customers. “We let our customers determine what living better is for them. Whether it’s a raw, paleo, vegan or a weight loss diet, or alternative treatments for pain, better focus or sleep, we can help,” said Sowers. “All our Nutrition Consultants are trained to answer our customer’s health related and nutritional questions.” Each of Clark’s Nutrition Consultants goes through an in-house 5-level training program. Level five is the highest. Nutritional Consultants wearing a black or burgundy shirt have completed classes in nutrition science.
Clark’s is in the process of partnering with Huntington College of Health Sciences for accreditation and certification programs for their employees. Clark’s Nutrition Consultants do not work on commissions, which is not common practice at other health related stores. “We have the most knowledgeable people working for us,” said Sowers. Walk through the doors of Clark’s and there is an immediate sense of being on the path to living better. There is so much to see and explore. There are colorful and inviting rows of gluten free, dairy alternatives, organic foods, nonGMO, dye-free, to name only a mere few of the specialty products available. Clark’s also supports CV growers and small businesses. Peruse the shelves and there’s coffee made in Joshua Tree and fresh green tea from Desert Hot Springs. Local celebrity and longevity advocate Suzanne Summers has a cosmetic counter with a Clark’s consultant ready to provide a makeover. Clark’s Nutrition first opened its Riverside store in 1972. There are now four Clark’s in California. Rancho Mirage Clark’s opened in 2005. The other two stores are in Loma Linda and Chino. continue to page 5

CLARK’S continued from page 3
“Each store has it’s own personality. Rancho Mirage is a favorite of mine because our clientele there is so relaxed and friendly. No one seems in a hurry or stressed,” said Sowers. Clark’s is a family owned and operated business. “The fourth generation is coming up into the company now,” said Sowers. A sense of family and community is an important part of Clark’s mission. Sowers has worked for Clark’s for 36 years. He is enthusiastic about the quality and health benefits of their products. He is incredibly knowledgeable and personable. His energy is contagious. “I’m especially excited about sharing

the Veriditas essential oils in the up-coming workshop,” said Sowers. “This is the best quality oil on the market and they only sell their product to qualified independent retailers. We love the company and the way they grow and make their oils.” Veriditas by Pranarom is a French company located in Provence that grows artisanal, organic plants to ensure highgrade therapeutic potency which is all natural and safe for both ingestion and topical use. They are 100 percent pure “Ecocert” certified. (France’s more stringent version of the USDA Organic seal of which they also have certification.) Veriditas embraces the Co-op Trade
Movement by working with small family operated organic farms and distilleries. They sell directly to their chosen retail partners, like Clark’s. This process allows their highquality product to be more affordable and competitive. “In the case of Veriditas, you get what you pay for,” said Sowers. In a quick few minutes, Sowers delivers the amazing biochemistry and history of essential oils. He rattles off a myriad of pure oils with properties that can be used individually or combined to help people feel better physically and mentally. “It takes 2,000 pounds of lavender blossoms to make a gallon of lavender oil,” said Sowers. “People are not aware that there a several varieties of lavender and they do a lot more than just serve to relax and calm the nervous system.” Like a wine connoisseur, Sowers describes how and where the lavender plants grow makes a difference. “The variety, ‘Lavender Spike’ grows wild in the hot Spanish desert and has a different chemical profile than ‘Lavender Angustifolia’ grown in the French Alps,” said Sowers. “The dry climate makes the Spike variety high in camphor which is helpful as a sinus and bronchial treatment.” Sowers’ enthusiasm for essential oils amps up as he anticipates just how fun the November workshop will be.
“We will briefly discuss the basics of essential oils and then move on to treatments for common winter colds and illness,” said Sowers. “We’ll have some essential oil recipes for spa treatments and how to use essential oils for face and skin rejuvenation.” It’s clear that Sowers loves what he does. As the Director of Education for Clark’s, he lives what he teaches and uses essential oils every day whether it’s for exercise or cooking. “The Veriditas oils have upped the medicinal game,” said Sowers. “They are the best essential oils on the market. There is a big difference in the quality and I am excited to share the wide ranging benefits and uses with our customers.” The Coachella Valley is fortunate to have a Clark’s and there is always room to “Live Better.” It’s nice to know Clark’s is here and eager help. The essential oil workshop will be held inside Rancho Mirage’s Clark’s Nutrition & Natural Foods Market. Seating is limited, so be sure to get there early. ‘SOLIDARITY THROUGH PRIDE’ BRINGING PRIDE BACK TO DOWNTOWN WHERE IT BELONGS
BY JUDITH SALKIN
EVENTS
THE 2016 GREATER PALM SPRINGS PRIDE WEEK CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF CHANGE AND DIVERSITY IN CITY
M
mmm. Let’s see, there is a ton of stuff to do this weekend in Palm Springs – and most of it is tied to the 30th annual celebration of Greater Palm Springs Pride. While the week’s events started with a candlelight vigil and march through downtown that honored the late LGBT activist George Zander on Tuesday, the weekend is filled with concerts, dances, the Pride Festival on Arenas Road and Palm Canyon Drive and, of course, the piece de resistance, the Pride Parade on Sunday morning. “Palm Springs has one of the most unique Pride events in the U.S.,” says Ron deHarte, President of the Greater Palm Springs Pride Board of Directors, of the event that takes over Downtown and Arenas Road on Friday through Sunday. Considering the size of the city and the LGBT population in the valley, Palm Springs Pride draws more attendees than Los Angeles, Long Beach or San Diego. “We have people who plan their vacations around our Pride event, and that makes us a significant presence (as part of the city’s annual events).” The multi-day event wasn’t always so significant, but as the old saying goes, big festivals from little variety shows grow. In 1986, the first year that Pride was celebrated in Palm Springs, it was a variety show at the Riviera Hotel. The variety shows continued for a couple of years, even moving to the McCallum Theatre when the show got bigger and the audience grew. Palm Springs Pride shifted into something of a more traditional celebration in 1990 with vendors and entertainment along Arenas Road, says deHarte. The parade made its debut in 1997, with its contingent of walking groups, floats and bands, including the Palm Springs High School Marching Band, which has been there from the first year. When the festival got too big for Arenas Road, it was moved to the Palm Springs stadium at Sunrise Park in 2001. The stadium offered more space but it also enclosed the
6
festival and entertainment venues. And while it wasn’t meant to, it created a closed atmosphere. Because of the location on the baseball field and the fact that everything was enclosed by the bleacher, it felt segregated from the rest of the city, except for the parade. Considering the open and welcoming atmosphere in Palm Springs that certainly not what GPSP wanted. As Pride kept growing, so did the cost of renting the stadium, and by 2011 it was time to change location again. “We started looking at bringing the festival back to downtown,” deHarte says. To give festival-goers more opportunities to explore the shops and restaurants on Palm Canyon Drive, “We needed to be more visible, and not feel like we were hiding from the rest of the city.” Being back in Downtown since 2014 has accomplished a lot for Pride. “People hang out on Arenas Road, and they go shopping or try the restaurants on Palm Canyon,” he says. “We’ve been able to create the most unique Pride event (anywhere).” Gay, lesbian, straight, transgender, families, couples and individuals, this year’s Pride is expecting more than 120,000 locals and visitors – 72 percent of the total – throughout the weekend, that’s a lot of foot traffic from Friday through Sunday downtown. Admission is free for most of the events and the Pride Festival, with the exception of a couple of events. The entertainment is worth checking out the weekend where highlights include the Trevor Under the Stars Concert with Lance Bass making an appearance; English Beat and Book of Love in concert; and so many other acts it takes four stages to hold it all. There are activity booths for little kids and teens, vendors, food, beverage areas and all the businesses and restaurants on Palm Canyon Drive and Arenas Road – and every other street in the area – to explore.
“That sends a significant statement toward the brand of then city, that we welcome everyone,” he says. “It tells a worldwide story that Palm Springs supports all of us.” Ron deHarte’s top Greater Palm Springs Pride events not to miss: Trevor Under the Stars Concert - 8-11pm Fri. November 4 - Tahquitz Stage General admission, Free; VIP, $50 includes vodka bar Lance Bass, Daniel Franzese and George headline with Kotsiopoulo with America’s Got Talent Finalist, Brian Justin Crum and Grammy Award-winner DJ Dave Audé. This inaugural concert recognizes The Trevor Project’s impact in suicide prevention and crisis intervention for LGBTQ young people and raises awareness about their life saving resources to kick-off Palm Springs Pride. English Beat - 9pm Sat. November 5 Tahquitz Stage. Free 1970s English rockers whose music is fusion of ska, reggae, punk, pop and soul.
Book of Love Concert - 2:10pm Sun. November 6 - US Bank Stage. Free This forward-thinking, American synth pop/electronic band became a page-turner in the mid-80s as one of the first bands whose music dealt with sexual orientation and gender roles. One of their biggest hits was 1988’s “Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls,” one of the first songs that openly addressed the AIDS epidemic. The Pride Parade - 10am Sun. November 6 - Palm Canyon Drive. Free This year’s parade promises to be A-MazING! First, the parade will start off with a tribute to the 49 victims who lost their live on June 12 at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Two of the attack survivors and 49 members of Palm Springs’ LGBT community will lead the parade to show support for all victims of hate crimes. The nearly 200 units in the parade will include the Palm Springs Chief of Police and chiefs from other Coachella Valley communities, along with members of

the PSPD, the world’s largest LGBT band – 300 to 350 marching musicians – along with Palm Springs High School and Desert Hot Springs High School marching bands, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, groups from other communities and floats will all march up Palm Canyon Drive. The reviewing stand will be located near Frances Stevens Park, with other stands near Trio and 849 restaurants. DeHart suggests parking and finding a place to watch along closer to those spots as the street closer to the start of the parade will fill up early. The Pride Festival - All Weekend - Palm Canyon Drive and Arenas Road. BREAKING THE 4TH WALL
BY DEE JAE COX
A STAGE REVIEW OF “ANNAPURNA”
A
nnapurna is a mountain in the Himalayas. Its highest peak is over 26,000 feet above sea level. It’s the tenth highest mountain in the world, as well as the most deadly, with the highest fatalityto-summit ratio, (34%). Annapurna is also the title of Sharr White’s off-Broadway play, currently in production at Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre in Rancho Mirage. The title aptly describes this drama that depicts the comedy and tragedy of a relationship that climbed to its highest peak and then
plummeted to its death in an avalanche of dysfunction and heartbreak. Laughter sets the stage as the curtain rises to reveal Ulysses, brilliantly portrayed by the talented Eric Charles Jorgenson, cooking sausages and wearing nothing but a dirty apron and an oxygen tank. His small, cluttered house trailer settled in the picturesque Rocky Mountains becomes even more cramped upon the unexpected arrival of his ex-wife Emma, performed beautifully by Anna Nicholas. Nicholas’s reaction to the ants and roaches had me jumping in my own seat. It’s been twenty years since Anna, left Ulysses in the middle of the night with their five-year-old son. He doesn’t remember what happened to cause her to abruptly flee in the night, while the memory seems to have relentlessly haunted her. White’s play is pure theater and one of the best show’s I’ve seen. A story told entirely through dialogue, by two characters in a single setting. Both Jorgenson and Nicholas have mastered their roles and easily bring the audience along for their emotional journey. I followed every exchange with rapt attention. I was caught peeking in a window of a dirty mountain trailer, watching two ex-lovers reveal the passion, bitterness and ultimate love of their past relationship. Anyone who
has ever reminisced about the pain of a love gone horribly wrong will identify with this story and with these flawed and very human characters. I would see it again just to find the lost pieces that I’m sure were shattered as this story unfolded. Ron Celona’s directing is creative and engaging. Moving the characters seamlessly around the cramped space without ever appearing to become redundant. The staging enhanced an already moving script. Jimmy Cuomo’s set design was detailed perfectly in depicting this mountain trailer that had not felt sunlight beneath the layers of dirt in a long while. Aalsa Lee’s costumes were spot on for these characters. Emma’s attire was tastefully simple, while Ullyses’ dirty shirt and cringe worthy crumbled shorts added to each of their characters’ lifestyles.
Though I would definitely say that it is targeted for a more adult audience, if you want to see really good theater, don’t miss CV Rep’s production of Annapurna. This is a show that will remind you of just how wonderful theatre can be when all of the creative elements blend together so perfectly. “Annapurna is in production at the Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre located at 69930 Highway 111, Suite 116, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270 through November 20th. SYNERGY MUSIC, ARTS AND CAR SHOW FESTIVAL
S
ynergy Music, Arts and Car Show Festival boasts rows of vendors offering tasty food to delight your taste buds, unique art created right before your eyes, more than two hundred classic cars and low riders showcased for your viewing pleasure, an exciting kid zone, all while listening to incredible music performed by local artists and bands. The festival put on by Culturas Music and Arts is celebrating its fifth anniversary on Saturday, November 19th, 2016 at Dateland Park in Coachella and the organizers couldn’t be prouder. “It’s really exciting to see how much the festival has grown and it’s very humbling and an honor to be a part of it,” beams Culturas Music and Arts President Gabriela Armenta. The turnout this year is expected to be the largest yet as the event has gained in popularity by the word of mouth of previous festival goers. I was fortunate to hear from many Culturas representatives about what they are most looking forward to this year: “I look forward to the different styles of music, as well as the many different types of vendors that we will be having this year. I like that we will be highlighting more on the traditional arts like folklore dancing and Aztec dancing, which I am happy to be part off.” Claudia J Armenta “Synergy is our biggest event of the year. It takes a lot of effort over several months to put it all together. But it’s worth it to see everyone enjoying the surroundings and interacting with each other and the art. I’m looking forward to seeing how the event grows. I hope to see new people discovering Synergy, the mural and the artists of the valley.” Keila Cupil “It’s important because it a bridge to connect people together. It brings peace, love, harmony, music, art, diversity connecting East and West. It’s the first festival supporting local talents.” Yaya Ortiz “We are happy to accomplish coming into our fifth year. It’s a great connection to the community. It’s getting bigger and bigger and we look forward to the next few years. We know that it will be one of
the biggest free music and art festivals. We are looking to create an international food component and bring in more art and music.” Ruben Gonzalez “The Word “Culturas translates to cultures” in English and the Coachella Valley is made up of many cultures and traditions. This year I really wanted to bring more of that diversity to the festival. I want to highlight what the east side of the valley has to offer, by including more traditional arts, and a more diverse lineup, shedding light on the amazing work that the artists have accomplished with the Mural project and the Chicano history, the awesome display of classic cars with the car show hosted by the Viejitos Car club. We are happy to have this year the participation of many merchandise and food vendors from around the valley and the L.A. area. We will have pottery, jewelry, t-shirts, shoes, and other accessories. We will also have Native American food, Thai, Jamaican, Southern and Mexican food and the participation of many other organizations and non-profits that will provide information and resources to the community.” Gabriela Armenta The live art murals and booths showcase some of the best visual artists in the valley and includes: Made, Adan Reyes, Sal Gomez, Panik, Warzart, Francisco Lemus, Sofia Enriquez, Clarissa Sky Cervantes, Eduardo Velades, Princess Ramirez, and Keila Cupil. These talented artists will be creating all day so you may be a part of the energy surrounding their works. Musical acts performing will be DJ Kastik, 2 Toxic, DJ Final Drift, Gema Gonzalez, Arturo Castellanos, Row Low, Pocket Yellow, The Hive Minds, Mosaiq, Drop Mob, Alchemy, Higher Heights, Corea Blue, The CMF’s, House Whores, Michaelhaaaus Trio, Groupo Bohemio, Hungry Hearts, Bri Cherry & The Boys, and The BrosQuitos. Two stages will be keeping your ears turned up. Synergy Music and Arts Festival is held Saturday November 19th, 2016 at Coachella Dateland Park. t is always refreshing to see a young person working in the jazz genre. It is a legacy that must be preserved and continue to grow. One impressive addition to the mix is a beautiful 29 year old vocalist from Canada by the name of Khea Emmanuel. Her sultry alto combined with a classic jazz style makes her the perfect addition to our next Celebrity Jam. Khea is the daughter of legendary Motown artist Leroy Emmanuel. Located on the Canadian side of Niagra Falls she has a natural gift and a stunning presence that suit the jazz genre so very well. Her grandmother was a singer and her grandfather a classical violinist. Her father tried to teach her guitar early in her life, but her passion was singing, so by 15 she had made her choice. When she listened to Sarah Vaughn she decided ‘this is what I want to do.’ Her selections are influenced by the 30’s and 40’s standards. In addition to performing, Khea also composes and is currently recording a new CD with famed producer Bob Esty, who has produced for notables including Cher, Barbara Streisand, Bette Midler and Donna Summers. This will be a full CD of originals written primarily by her producer. She explained it has some darker elements. When pressed she said there are classical strings, sultry, elements of other genres that will mix things up. Her first release was “Know Thyself” a pop rock music video. Her rendition of “Body and Soul” on her 7 song compilation is a Jazz standards CD. This is the newer project from three years ago, a musical shift she made when she realized that jazz was the love of her life. It was like a stamp. Khea’s favorite part of her singing career is live performance. When I asked what her goals are she said she would love to perform around the world. She enjoys making people feel good. She strives to make her music fresh. Her goal is to inspire people.
Her humble hip/cool vibe guarantees a jazz performance that you will wish to repeat again and again. Khea’s mother and she are working on a tribute to their producer. They are holding a Red carpet Gala Event for Bob Esty honoring him and his legacy in Canada. Meanwhile, they fly regularly to LA for Khea to do her recording and performing. They are going to bring out her producer from LA to honor him for his work. Khea will be performing in our next Celebrity Jam at Outdoor Resorts Palm Springs on Jan. 15, 2017. She will be joined with top artists in the jazz, blues, funk, groove, and Latin Jazz realms. For more information on Khea or to book her visit her website at www.kheaemmanuel.com.

METALACHI: THEY CAN BE SERIOUS TOO!
M
etalachi has performed in the desert several times now and each show has brought a high energy mariachi + metal + comedy show that cannot be duplicated. This Friday, November 4th at 9 p.m. at the Date Shed in Indio, Metalachi continues its metal dominance of the lively Mexican street music played with brass instruments and guitars traditionally performed at weddings and Quinceañeras. Tickets are available at ticketfly.com and at Old Town Barbershop & Shave Parlor on Miles Avenue in Indio. I spoke with Metalachi ‘unmasked’ this past week to give us a glimpse ‘behind the scenes’. What do you like about performing in the Coachella Valley? “Every time we come to the Coachella Valley we are received with the warmest of welcomes. We are so fortunate to have a fan base that is so loyal to us and what we represent. We call it ‘Metalachi Nation’! That is what we enjoy the most about coming down to the desert cities; our fans and what they bring to every Metalachi concert. They are loud, sing along and they are the life of the party!” Have there been any songs you’ve had difficulty playing mariachi style? “Not that they are difficult to play in mariachi, but they might not have the same punch as that of the original song on its own as metal. I believe any song can be played with mariachi instruments but won’t necessarily mean it will be to our liking. There have been a couple of songs we’ve worked on but that at the end we decided not to keep because either the audience doesn’t react to it as we would like or because it needs more work.” What do you do when you’re not playing mariachi and being funny? “When we’re not on tour we have rehearsals at least one time a week so as to not forget the songs or to work on new ones. We also work on our new Metalachi Podcast where we already have 1,500 downloads! I don’t feel like we stop being funny. Being funny is a way of life and helps us maintain that humorous attitude towards living. There are of course certain circumstances where we need to be serious and we know how to flip the switch when need be.” What’s it like when the band members are hanging out on an ‘off’ day? “When we are on tour and have days off we usually look for places to go. For example, we look for caverns around the area and to see new places. We go to the movies, exercise or if someone wants to stay at the hotel they can just chill. It’s always a good time. We try to keep it interesting and of course try to rest when we have days off if the schedule is tight.” What do you want to relay to your fans in the Coachella Valley? “We just want to invite everyone to come
“Leather, big hair, studs, profanity, aerial acrobatics, blazing guitar solos, grown men in tight pants, bondage belts, Doc Martens, and loud bass in your face. You can also expect a lot of hot chicks dancing to covers by the Ramones, G ‘n’ R, Billy Idol, Green Day, Social D., Motley Crue, Poison, Rancid, Danzig, the Cure and more!” What’s next for Gutter Candy? “We will be returning to the studio in early 2017 to record two new original tracks as well as our own version of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’”; other than that, just trying to avoid collection agencies and incarceration.” Upcoming Gutter Candy shows: 11/4 The Date Shed w/ Metalachi & Wyte Gye (Indio, CA) 11/5 Tryst (Palm Springs, CA) 11/11 Boondocks (Banning, CA) 12/17 Boondocks (Banning, CA) 12/30 Red Barn (Palm Desert, CA) and party with us at the Date Shed and to remember to get their livers ready for all the tequila that will be consumed because the more you drink the better we sound ha-ha! But on a serious note, we would love to see everyone there to rock out with your taco out! We’ll have shirts, stickers and CDs for sale. Also I would like to let them know that our new album is done and we’re in the mastering process so look for it soon on iTunes! WE LOVE YOU METALACHI NATION!” www.metalachi.com Find the Metalachi Podcast on iTunes
GUTTER CANDY: SWEET & HARD
Coachella Valley Weekly chewed the fat with Jersey Dagger, lead vocalist for Gutter Candy this past week as they prepared to provide support to Metalachi this Friday at the Date Shed in Indio. The hard rock, classic punk & metal band is based out of Joshua Tree, CA. What’s the premise behind Gutter Candy? “Gutter Candy was late to the ‘hard rock’ party as the 90’s swept away hair metal on the Sunset Strip and handed the rock star crown to the likes of Nirvana and Green Day. However, this merry band of rock ‘n’ roll wannabes would survive with leather jackets, cheetah print skinny jeans, and studded belts intact. More than two decades later singer Jersey Dagger, drummer Sin Balls, bassist D.D. Gunz, and guitarists Lixxx Candy and Shawn Smash would hit the Hollywood club circuit to promote the release of their first five song EP, Come Guzzling (2015). Vowing to revive the hard rock landscape of the late 80’s and early 90’s
Gutter Candy would not only release their own original material but would also launch a ‘cover tribute show’ to this era performing songs by the best hard rock, sunset strip metal, punk, and alternative indie rock acts, as well as early classic punk bands like The Ramones. Most notably, Gutter Candy has performed an almost yearlong residency at the popular Palm Springs night club, Tryst, which is located next to the Hard Rock Hotel on Indian Canyon Drive, an area of Palm Springs that the band has now referred to as the new ‘Sunset Strip’ performing a Saturday night showcase of their cover-tribute show called ‘Hard Rock Radio’. Popular in their home state of California, their notoriety has grown primarily from their cover songtribute act, satirical comedic stage show and loud attire. Gutter Candy has also garnered a strong reputation in the United Kingdom and Europe, as well as Thailand and Vietnam, for their unique personas and their original songs. They have obtained substantial airplay for the first single off their five song EP Come Guzzling entitled “Ricky Skittles.”” What should Date Shed patrons expect from Gutter Candy on 11/4/2016?
WYTE GYE
“Simply put, Wyte Gye is an attitude. We are just four dudes from Indio, California who have a passion for rock music. We are more than fans. We took it a step further and decided to share our enthusiasm for the music with others in a live setting. Wyte Gye is the epitome of a ‘party band’. On guitar we have Eric ‘WYTE GYE’ Willman, on bass Michael Jimenez, on drums Dominic Jimenez, and on vocals Noe Gutierrez. Having filled numerous Coachella Valley venues to capacity with its fan base, the ‘Wyte Gye Brigade,’ Wyte Gye creates an atmosphere of intoxicating auditory pleasure. Wyte Gye has performed over 250 different hard and heavy classic rock songs during its 12 years in existence. Performing renditions of songs from AC/DC to ZZ Top, these gyes know how to stay true to the song while putting their own stamp on it. If you are looking for a guaranteed great time and a way to momentarily detach from life’s stressors, you WILL be at the next Wyte Gye show Friday, November 4, 2016 at The Date Shed kicking off the night for GUTTER CANDY & THE MIGHTY METALACHI!”

CONSIDER THIS
THEE HOLY BROTHERS
M
arvin Etzioni and Willie Aron have known each other nearly 40 years. They met at Aron’s Records in 1978. A Los Angeles institution, Aron’s opened on Melrose Avenue in 1965 across the street from Fairfax High School. A mecca for music lovers, it lasted 40 years closing in 2005. Willie was a 15 year old kid cutting class (um, spending his lunch break) with his friends, record shopping. Although they could clearly hear the school bell ringing, Willie insisted they couldn’t leave until the Who’s Live At Leeds record finished playing. The clerk nodded in agreement, adding “now there’s someone who likes good music!” That clerk was Marvin. To paraphrase “Casablanca,” it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. The pair began hanging out, playing and singing together. Marvin produced the demo for Willie’s first band, Blue Monday. A few years later, after Willie, Jeff Davis, Steve Wagner and Robert Blackmon formed The Balancing Act, Marvin produced that demo too. By the early ‘80s, Marvin was already a battle-scarred veteran of the record industry, having endured several disappointing experiences and false starts. He started off playing in bands with names like Prudence Goodbody and Model. More recently, he had begun performing solo gigs around town. It was then that he became acquainted with Ryan Hedgecock and Maria McKee. Struck by their talent, he mentored the pair for a bit before recruiting drummer Don Heffington and forming the band Lone Justice. By 1984, a huge buzz surrounded Lone Justice. They also had some pretty high profile fans; Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Tom Petty and assorted Heartbreakers. Signed to Geffen Records, their self-titled debut garnered rave reviews, in fact, they were hand-picked by U2 to open their Unforgettable Fire tour.

“MY NAME IS SPARKLE” (PEERMUSIC)
Their sound was a years ahead of the curve, a Country/Rock amalgam, built around Maria McKee’s powerhouse vocals. They truly foreshadowed the alt.country movement that would take flight in the early ‘90s. Sadly, none of the critical good will translated into sales and the original line-up disintegrated after one album. Meanwhile, Willie’s band the Balancing Act were kind of in the same boat. Between 1986 and 1988 they released an EP, (produced by Plimsouls front-man Peter Case), signed with IRS Records (home to R.E.M., the Go-Go’s and the Cramps), and recorded two well-received long-players, Three Squares And A Roof, and Curtains. Despite excellent reviews and exhaustive touring, the four-piece never gained any nationwide traction. Slightly dejected, they quietly disbanded before the turn of the decade. Both Marvin and Willie remained fixtures on the L.A. music scene, Marvin released three critically acclaimed solo albums as the Mandolin Man. A master of any stringed instrument, he became a popular session player, adding flavor to albums by Counting Crows, the Williams Brothers, Dixie Chicks, Bob Dylan and Lucinda Williams. He also became an indemand producer, crafting albums for Toad The Wet Sprocket, Peter Case and Grey DeLisle. Most recently he released a double LP set whimsically entitled Marvin Country. Following a stint with ex-Balancing Act pal Jeff Davis in Almighty Hi-Fi, Willie also became a sought after studio musician. He’s played with luminaries like Syd Straw, Joe Henry, Rickie Lee Jones, Peter Himmelman, Victoria Williams and Peter Case. He also began a second career as an in-demand kid’s musician. Recently, he ventured into film, playing one of the storied Wrecking Crew session musicians in “Love & Mercy,” the wonderful feature film about musical savant and Beach Boys founder, Brian Wilson. Through the years Marvin and Willie collaborated on a plethora of projects, but they never really contemplated recording an album from scratch until their Rabbi made an off-hand remark that really resonated. Greeting the pair at Temple services, Rabbi Finley jokingly referred to them as the Holy Brothers, the sobriquet stuck. Traveling Wilbury-style, they adopted the first names of Buddy (Marvin) and Johnny B. (Willie) as an homage to Rock N’ Roll progenitors Buddy Holly and Johnny Ace. They prefaced Holy Brothers with “Thee” as a tribute to East L.A. music legends Thee Midnighters. After a lengthy gestation period, the album My Name Is Sparkle was born. Initially, the pair hoped to emulate their idols, Simon & Garfunkel, (the Bookends album is a mutual obsession), but Marvin’s songs began to take a life of theirof their
own, addressing the ever-humbling topic of spirituality. Nine songs are presented in two Acts. The album kicks into gear with “Elvis In Jerusalem.” The listener is greeted with sinewy wah-wah guitar, spiky horns and snaky rhythms. The lyrics humorously conflate the King of Rock N’ Roll with the King Of Kings. Waiting in vain at the Wailing Wall, which deity will arrive? “I just want to see his smile, just like a little boy/Walk a hallelujah mile, just to hear his voice.” The title track is next. Anchored by staccato hand-claps, shaker percussion and Who-ish power chords, the melody is barebones and almost utilitarian, allowing the listener to focus on this sharply drawn quest for meaning. Sparkle seeks divinity in the everyday; “are you hiding in a church, are you a leaf on a tree/Are you a mother giving birth, are you the father I can believe?” The most buoyant song on the album celebrates the biological imperative. “Woman Needs Man, Man Needs Woman” is a lighthearted boogaloo that blends the Afro-Funk of Willie Bobo with the Jamaican Folk of Harry Belafonte, plus a hint of The Champs’ “Tequila.” The melody is powered by a chunky backbeat, stinging guitar and call-and-response horns that swivel and swirl, turning on a dime. Marvin recites the song’s penultimate line, “it’s better to be alone with a woman and talk about God than to be alone with God and talk about a woman,” with the timing of a Borscht Belt comic. Slow and stately, “If God Let Go” is buttressed by pensive guitar, piano, bass clarinet and pedal steel. A bleak scenario is predicted…“would it all come apart, would it always be dark?” But as the instrumentation builds and the vocals merge equal parts Gospel and Beatlesque, it belies the doom and gloom. The most harrowing track here, “A Sudden Gunshot” comes at the album’s mid-point, closing out Act One. The melody shares musical gravitas with two Simon & Garfunkel classics, “Old Friends” and “7 O’Clock News/Silent Night.” The tune opens with sweetly tinkling
piano, pastoral guitar and sawing autoharp. A snare drum locks into a martial cadence, slowly ratcheting up the tension. With a few sharply turned phrases, Marvin sketches out a desolate and desperate scenario of an anonymous man contemplating suicide; “His back was breaking from the weight of the world, the seasons wouldn’t change and the tables wouldn’t turn/Only so many feelings can live locked up in a man, everyone cares when it’s too late to understand.” Act Two opens on a more hopeful note. The shapeshifter melody of “Let The Great World Spin” is a tart fusion of New Orleans Second Line and traditional Klezmer music. Rollicking and exuberant, the instrumentation is a heady brew of guitar, mandolin, tuba, trombone, tambourine and a slap-back beat. It’s a laissez faire moment that offers some sweet respite. “I don’t know earth from sky, I don’t know when I’ll die/ I don’t know why doves cry, let the great world spin.” Bluesy and shambolic, “Glad It’s Gonna Rain” is accented by kick-drum rhythms, stuttery mandolin, gutbucket guitar and wheezy harmonica runs. The melody feels like a sly homage to Blues legend Jimmy Reed. The rain has a cleansing and salubrious effect, even as we contemplate the life’s great intangibles, the sun will still shine and the rain will still pour. “Divine Love” brings Sparkle’s journey full-circle. A slow burn melody, it is propelled by off-kilter beat, muted chamberlain, intricate mandolin and tin box music toy. Here Sparkle, (whose gender is purposely left ambiguous), speaks directly to God. “Everywhere is where You are, You are always in my life/What I feel in my heart, makes me want to cry.” The album closes with “Keep Crushing Me.” Here Marvin and Willie’s vocals fully intertwine wrapping the spare melody in a fraternal embrace. Accompanied by stark acoustic guitar notes, the lyrics explicitly acknowledge that spiritual grace is often meted out through struggle. “If there’s a rock that’s crushing me, but if it’s You God, if it is You God, if it is You God/Keep crushing me.” That is the great epiphany of this song cycle, faith is forged through adversity. My Name Is Sparkle is an ambitious experiment that truly works, integrating the secular and spiritual. There are aspirations to create a stage production, but those plans have yet to be fleshed out. In the meantime, the Holy Brothers have fashioned an album that echoes devotional touchstones like George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass and Pete Townshend’s Who Came First. www.theeholybrothers.com

THE WONDER OF WENDY
P
olitics aside, art is never quiet. The work of Wendy Wonder is no exception. Wendy Wonder was born to Sheryl Berk in the tumultuous sixties. “Andy Warhol and The Factory. People burning bras. Others burning draft cards. It was a time of change and experimentation, “ said Wendy. “Sheryl became Wendy – I was living on the Warhol fringe It was the West Village and The Fur Balloon Boutique was my fashion source. I was living the life of an artist, wild, free and without limitations.” Vocal, political and talented Wendy saw her work shown in many venues of Southern California. “I have much to say. Often words are the wrong medium and art is the correct medium to express a thought. The political satire that pervades me fine art work is more subtle than words.” The sixties gave rise to the seventies and Wendy found herself in Los Angeles. “It was a different time. I came to LA to be an artist. I found work on a range of projects. I worked with Ralph Bakshi on the first X-rated animated film, Fritz The Cat. I worked in advertising sales for Town & Country and W magazines, both a far cry from Fritz! I also worked for The Advocate, IN, Instinct and Angelino. My graphic arts style worked well for these projects.“ Wendy later moved on to Hollywood where she worked a costume designer for television. Her eye for style found her working on many shows. Her interest in style and fashion can be seen in her other work. Her accessories have a sense of timeless and whimsy. But like all her work there is so much more to see. A 60’s Mod who became one of the original Yuppies, Sheryl was always Wendy. The keen political voice never changed. She uses those parts to keep Wendy relevant and attuned to the social barometer. Wendy’s style is often a deceptively simple approach, easy to take in, and packed with a wallop. Her current project Team Pinhead is at the Trenz Gallery, 68895 Perez Road, Cathedral City. The work is black and white humanoid figures alone, together or with their equally pinhead dogs. “Politics cannot be escaped,” noted Wendy. “Pinheads are pointed headed people and pets of indiscriminate origin. Through her alchemy with paint, putting down layer upon layer, often over long periods of time, Zoe has infused her canvases with her own strong feelings for the natural wonders of our planet. Her deep emotions for her subjects come across and touch the viewer. As an abstract painter myself, I see Zoe’s work not only as depictions of nature, but in terms of the actual components of painting itself, such as color, surface, edge, form and shape…..Zoe, like all true artists, is clearly on a voyage of exploration and discovery in her work.” Joe Novak Fischer was born and raised in Los Angeles, Ca. She began exploring art at a very early age; she also began studying the violin and participating with her school orchestra - which led to her performing concerts at the Hollywood Bowl before the age of ten! She earned a Bachelor of Arts from UCLA, majoring in both Art and Music. She pursued painting, drawing, sculpting, pottery, jewelry design, and weaving. During her tenure at UCLA, she received a Grammy nomination for the category of best album cover. The work, an abstract painting, appeared on the jazz album “Extensions” by internationally acclaimed composer Clare Fischer. As a testament to her diverse talents, Fischer opened a boutique, Zoe Antiques, on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Specializing in Art Nouveau and Art Deco, Zoe Antiques attracted a celebrity clientele and the interest of Vogue Magazine, which devoted feature coverage of Zoe Antiques biannually in the magazine’s Boutique section. She then transitioned into real estate, designing livable spaces, and enhancing living environments. In 2001, Fischer moved to Palm Desert, Ca and began painting full time. Surrounded by the majestic beauty of the mountains and desert sky, her new environment provided the perfect inspiration for her new artworks. As one is drawn into the Team Pinheads series, one cannot escape that the work is expressing those things we hide from polite society. Wendy’s style leads you down a path of discussion. Simple. DOG DAYS AT FANTASY SPRINGS WITH C.A.N.
T
he crowd outside the special events center at the Fantasy Springs Casino steadily grew on Sunday morning, October 23. This gathering was unlike the usual groups of concert goers and gamblers that frequent the casino. The humans in this group were accompanied by 4-legged companions of every breed and size, some of them happily prancing around, grateful for the morning car ride and seemingly unaware of the reason for their outing. The dogs in this group were about to be sterilized at CAN’s (Coachella Animal Network) clinic, utilizing Zeuterin, a nonsurgical neutering procedure performed under only mild sedation. In the summer of 2013, the Fantasy Springs Casino hosted and sponsored the organization’s first two day free spay and neuter clinic for the pet of low income Coachella Valley residents. These events also include low cost vaccinations for pet owners who might not be able to afford this protection for their animals at a private vet. Since that time, CAN has sponsored dozens of mobile clinics throughout our East Valley, and sterilized over 3500 dogs and cats. The wonderful partnership between CAN and the Fantasy Springs Casino is a model that hopefully other businesses will want to
duplicate. The Casino owners recognize that the Coachella Valley, like most of the country, has a serious pet overpopulation problem. Stray animals battle hunger and disease. Boxes of unwanted newborn animals are dumped in fields where they succumb to a slow and painful death. Our Riverside County public shelter is overwhelmed, and thousands of adoptable cats and dogs are euthanized yearly for lack of space. The situation at most public open-admission shelters is heartbreaking for the animals and those who love them, to say nothing of the expense to taxpayers. There are simply too many animals and not enough homes to adopt them. If you haven’t already neutered or spayed your pet, here are some additional reasons why you should do so. (1) Your female pet will live a longer, healthier life. (2) Neutering your male animal brings him major health benefits. (3) Your spayed female will no longer go into heat. neutering is no longer an excuse for pet owners to procrastinate. The cost at a CAN clinic to spay and neuter a dog or cat of any size is only $25. All the CAN clinics offer low cost vaccinations to protect your pet. This is in contrast to the rates at private veterinary clinics where it can cost up to $700 to spay a very large female dog and up to $500 to spay a female cat. for a free or low cost spay and neuter clinic in our East Valley, and teamed up with the Animal Action League’s mobile clinic to make it happen. Kim explains, “We have all these unwanted animals, and everyone was just talking about the need for more spaying and neutering. Our government can’t solve the problem alone. My heart breaks every time I see a stray animal, abandoned, and often emaciated. I feel the community needs to take responsibility for these helpless animals. We need more businesses and private citizens to join the fight and sponsor a clinic.” CAN’s next spay and neuter clinic is the weekend of November 11 and 12 at the ABC Recovery Center in Indio. You must call (760) 366-1100 for an appointment to spay or neuter your cat or dog. Walk-ins are welcome at the low cost vaccination clinic operating from 10am to 3pm. It costs over $2,000 to do a one day clinic, and $2800 for a clinic including vaccines. You can make a difference by donating to C.A.N on website www.dogangel.org. Spaying one dog has the potential to prevent the birth of 67,000 puppies over a 6 year period! Be a “dog angel” and donate to this very worthy cause. Jmcafee7@verizon.net

THE VINO VOICE
November 3 to November 9, 2016
BY RICK RIOZZA
THE LITTLE BLACKBIRD KNOWN AS MERLOT
N
ot too long ago, Merlot took a hit both in reputation and in sales as far as the in-vogue wine to enjoy. Merlot, “The little blackbird” in French, the darling of the new vinophiles (oenophiles) of the 80’s and 90’s, found mud on its face and the fans stopped ordering it, drinking instead Pinot Noir. We all had fun with the 2004 movie, “Sideways,” where we wine lovers were treated to two characters, Miles and his soon-to-marry friend Jack, mix it up with wine, women, and song (the soundtrack is some stellar up-beat jazz that always plays well at wine tasting parties). And boy did the movie make waves in the wine consumption business. Out of the blue, wine nerd Miles apparently gleaned “real” wine gravitas when his praise for Pinot Noir caused sales to soar, while his disparaging rants against Merlot stopped lower-end Merlot dead in their tracks. Napa wine writer, Dan Berger, wrote: “and every winemaker who made merlot at the time probably had acid reflux for a month.” It’s forever been referred to as the “Sideways effect” when Pinot Noir producers saw the demand and understandably raised their prices—and they’re relatively still up there. But we vino lovers are surely secure with the quaffs of our favorite varietals—no matter what the world is clanging for. And those who were fans of delicious Merlot were never affected. And of course, the clever irony and inside joke in the movie is that Miles favorite wine that he’s been waiting for that special occasion to open is his 1961 Château Cheval Blanc. Well, Château Cheval Blanc, a “right bank Bordeaux in Saint-Émilion, is indeed a blend of Merlot with a good percentage of Cabernet Franc. The economic truth however is that the movie did increase American red wine consumption. When examined by price, we saw that the negative effects of Merlot were confined mostly to the lower priced segment, under $10 per bottle, And truth be told, back then there was a lot of medium-to-low priced Merlot getting a little flabby, which has since been improved on! But in the 1990s, it emerged from somewhere back in the pack to pass Cabernet Sauvignon as the top-selling red varietal wine in the United States by the turn of the millennium. In the glory years, wine industry analysts dubbed Merlot “the Silicon Valley grape” because it grew 20% or 30% year after year, just like the dot-com stocks. As we mentioned earlier, Merlot is one of the five premiere grape varieties that go into the most famous red blend in the world— known as Bordeaux. What Merlot brings to the classic mix of Cabernet Sauvigon, Cab Frank, Petite Verdot, and Malbec is plenty of red berry fruit, silky tannins, higher alcohol and lower acidity levels; while, Cabernet Sauvignon is heavy on the black fruit, relishes tighter tannins and significant structure, and, often lower levels of alcohol than Merlot. The beauty of
Bordeaux’s wines stem from the blend; it is in fact the blended synergy between the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, well supported by Cabernet Franc, which brings the balance and elegance that have become synonymous with Bordeaux wine for centuries. The new world also blends these grapes with great success. When all the classic aforementioned varietals are used, quite often the producer will label the wine as a “Meritage”. With not so much of a “French” pronunciation, but rather rhyming with the English word “heritage”—indeed, this developed term is supposedly the combination of both the word “heritage” and the word “merit”, indicating the respect and quality for the pioneering Bordeaux blend. But as we well know, Merlot is definitely a star on its own with its independent existence as a varietal. And is also now competing with a long list of tantalizing wines from around the world—Australia, New Zealand, Spain and Argentina included. Nearly everyone agrees that the best Merlots are world class wines, and that brands with established reputations continue to command a following. Merlot remains a much bigger category than either Pinot Noir or Syrah. Because Cabs and Merlots are often teammates and blended together, some wine enthusiasts tend to lose the distinction. If both wines are produced in the same manner from the same area, Cabernet Sauvignon will usually taste bolder because of its high tannin content. However, there are many bold Merlot wines out there. If you are looking for bolder Merlots, a good piece of advice is to look for Merlot from hillside estates. Wine grapes from hillside vineyards produce smaller grapes which make more intense and tannic wines. The Cool Climate Regions (aka ‘old world’) produce Merlots with higher acidity and more subtle fruit flavors. Wines from cool climates tend to taste more savory than fruity. Hot Climate Regions (aka ‘new world’) produce wines with body and bolder fruit flavors. Wines from hot climates tend to have increased
alcohol content and taste inherently sweeter. Classic Merlot flavors are black cherries, plums, black currants/cassis, dark chocolate, strawberries, vanilla, blueberries, raspberries, smoke, spices, leather, licorice, meat. In cool climate, look for fresh cherries, plums vanilla; in warm climate you’ll find chocolate, cooked cherries, and prunes. One of the most cherished Merlot vineyards in California wine country is the Three Palms Vineyards that is now owned by Duckhorn Vineyards. Describing the 83 acre site as ‘North America’s greatest Merlot vineyard’ and ‘the crown jewel of our estate program,’ Duckhorn, in 2011 acquired exclusive rights for all of the grapes at this legendary site and in 2014 took over responsibility for farming the property. Duckhorn has produced a Three Palms Merlot since its inaugural 1978 vintage selling back then at $12.5 per bottle. It now sells for around $100 a bottle. The perennial bucket-list wine! I recently enjoyed this wine at a special Duckhorn tasting event held at the HYATT REGENCY INDIAN WELLS RESORT & SPA in Indian Wells. A very impressive venue—looking forward to more tastings there! Cheers!

DANTE’S FLAME BARELY BURNS NOW PLAYING: INFERNO
Walking out of a local theater showing this film, I heard a patron say, “The only mystery in Inferno is how this piece of crap movie got made.” Harsh words indeed, but I totally agree with this overheard assessment. One thing I did notice was actor Tom Hanks’ evolving hair-do as he plays successive versions of Harvard Symbologist (a made-up title) Robert Langdon in the various iterations of this movie franchise based on the bestsellers by Dan Brown. At least Hanks’ hair issues are not as extreme as displayed in Nic Cage’s recent big screen appearances. But that is faint praise for this mess of a movie. The posters, trailers and TV spots suggest this film is somehow about a clue to a world devastating plague embedded in the first part Dante Alighieri’s epic 14th-century poem The Divine Comedy. For me the movie was a hodge-podge of incoherent plot points and meaningless medieval factoids. I defy anyone to tell me the core story in a few sentences. I did not read the book, so I can’t blame author Dan Brown. Maybe screenwriter David Koepp followed the structure of Brown’s book, maybe not. Director Ron Howard is a smart guy who loves movies. He has shown himself adept at telling an engaging, taut, emotionally authentic and intelligent story with visual flair. Not so here. Years ago, I spent extended time with producer Brian Grazer developing a movie idea. I found him to be an exceedingly bright and curious guy. It astounds me that no one intervened and fixed this meaningless, contrived story that makes no sense whatsoever. I did take to heart the terror of a global pandemic unleashed by a crazed biotech billionaire trying kill off half the human population in order to save humankind. For some reason unknown to

me – and probably the filmmakers – the villain uses Dante’s poem as containing clues to where he’s hidden the deadly contagion. Why you ask? I have no idea. Clearly there was an attempt to replicate the structure of Brown’s Da Vinci Code. The movie’s contrivances are laughable and impenetrable. I never suspended disbelief. And I didn’t believe the gobbledygook nonsense that explained (ha!) what was happening on screen. I did like the opportunity to make an all too brief tour of Venice and the random shots in various familiar location in Istanbul were welcome but they were not nearly enough to make this immensely disappointing movie even minimally satisfying. Maybe my mistake was not experiencing this movie in a D-Box seat. But I don’t think even a motion activated seat would help make this a more fun movie.
it over to American archaeologist Jim Calder (Alan Ladd) who promises to give it to the Greek government so it can be displayed in a prominent Greek museum. Beautifully shot in cinemascope by Milton R. Krasner from a screenplay by Ivan Moffat and Dwight Taylor (based on the novel by David Divine). Jean Negulesco directs with an assured eye and solid feeling for time and place. The fussy, inimitable Clifton Webb co-stars. This gem goes in my digital library for many future viewings. Big recommendation. Kino Lorber. Bluray. THE LEGEND OF TARZAN
NEW FOR THE HOME THEATER: BOY ON A DOLPHIN (1957)
Certainly among the most sought after of new home theater releases of beloved vintage films, this stunning 4K-restoration stars Italian goddess Sophia Loren in her American film debut. This romantic adventure yarn set in a post card perfect seaside village on the Greek island of Hydra, is about a beautiful sponge diver Phaedra (Loren) who finds a breath-taking gold statue of a boy riding a dolphin. Her slimy and crooked boyfriend (Jorge Mistral) wants to sell it to an unscrupulous and wealthy art collector, but Phaedra wants to hand
The latest action adventure about Edgar Rice Burroughs’ King of the Jungle arrives on Ultra HD Blu-ray and 3D for the best experience (image and audio) possible in the latest home theater displays. It has been years since the man known as Tarzan left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash. Alexander Skarsgard is a perfect fit as Tarzan. The ensemble cast also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Margot Robbie, Djimon Hounsou, Jim Boradbanet and Christoph Waltz. David Yates directs from a literate screenplay by Adam Cozad and Craig Brewer.
Barry Fitzgerald. His riding along as “chaperone” is but one obstacle to their future happiness: the other is her brother (Victor McLaglen), who not only spitefully refuses to give his consent to their marriage but also won’t honor the custom of paying a dowry to the husband. It doesn’t matter that Sean could care less about dowries. In fact, he would’ve punched out the bullying McLaglen long ago if he hadn’t sworn off fighting. However, Mary Kate accuses him of being a coward and walks out on him. Sean takes matters into his own hands – or fists, as the case may be. The resulting fistfight erupts into one of the longest brawls ever filmed (at the time), followed by one a most memorable of all movie reconciliations. The Quiet Man won a total of two Academy Awards® including Best Director for John Ford and Best Cinematography. The movie received a total five Oscar© nominations including Best Picture, Best Screenplay and a Best Supporting Actor for McLaglen. Among the extras, is the printed Booklet: “Joseph McBride on THE QUIET MAN” adapted from his biography: SEARCHING FOR JOHN FORD. Also included is the watchable featurette “The Making of THE QUIET MAN” written and hosted by Leonard Maltin Maltin talks to Michael Wayne, Toni Wayne LaCara and Andrew V. McLaglen. If you only know this wonderfully entertaining romance from watching the poor quality previous home video releases, then you haven’t really seen it. This beautifully restored edition of one of John Ford’s certified masterpiece is another title worthy of the digital home library. Olive Signature edition. Blu-ray. THE CHASE (1966)
THE QUIET MAN (1952)
Sean Thornton (John Wayne) is an American boxer who swears off fighting after he accidentally kills a man in the ring. Returning to the Irish town of his youth, he purchases his birth home and soon finds himself happy and in love with the fiery Mary Kate (Maureen O’Hara) who insists Sean conduct his courtship in a traditional and thus proper Irish manner with matchmaker
Debuting on hi-def in a new limited edition 4K restoration transfer, is the explosive saga about how a prison break exposes local secrets, lies and violence on a corrupt Texas town as conjured by legendary talents Arthur Penn (director), Sam Spiegel (producer) and Lillian Hellman (writer). All-star in every department, the terrific performances are from a great cast co-starring Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, E.G. Marshall, Angie Dickinson, Janice Rule, Robert Duval and James Fox. The movie has a look and feel al it’s own. It manages to weave a credible pattern of tangled loyalties and enmities which director Penn mixes into a volatile brew of controlled explosions. The great John Barry score is available on an isolated track. Twilight Time Movies. Blu-ray. Comments, questions? RobinESimmons@aol.com

POSSESSION OBSESSION -----------------------------------------------------
“A HEAD FULL OF GHOSTS” BY PAUL TREMBLAY FICTION -----------------------------------------------------
T
he idea of “possession” is terrifying. Whether it is a result of a psychological breakdown, schizophrenia or a fullblown demon, it is a horrific problem to overcome -- if indeed it can be resolved. When a child is involved, it is even more disturbing. In Paul Tremblay’s A Head Full of Ghosts, (William Morrow, 288 pages) one child must take a fresh look at what haunts her. Marjorie and Merry are sisters. They live like most families -- good neighborhood, nice house, decent schools, no drama. But the girls father has been out of work for nearly a year and the stress on their mother is starting to take a toll on the whole family. They are a mortgage payment away from to losing their home. Marjorie is 14 years old and Merry is eight. Merry loves the attention of her older sister. And most of the time, Marjorie is kind and friendly to Merry. The two girls are creative and silly. But when Marjorie starts to act strangely everything in the house shifts. Marjorie no longer showers or washes her hair and she talks back to her folks. She swears

BY HEIDI SIMMONS and behaves obscenely. This confuses young Merry. Things move about the house and there are weird incidents that seemingly cannot be explained. Not knowing how to control her teenage daughter, the mother wants Marjorie to go get medical help. But the cost for Marjorie’s mental health treatment is expensive. The father turns to the church. Since they are a non-religious family, this baffles the mother and girls. Now their dad prays for help, and instead of taking Marjorie to her doctor’s appointment, he takes her to see a priest. It’s clear to the priest that Marjorie is possessed and suggests an exorcism. The priest knows a producer who will pay the family to film the ordeal. The producer sells the project/ idea as a reality television series. The money helps the family get back on their financial feet. The film crew comes into the home and takes over. They shoot video for weeks. A date is set for the exorcism. Marjorie is strapped to the bed and the rituals are performed. Little Merry is asked to participate because the demon is most active when Merry is present. As things get even weirder, Merry runs out of the room and Marjorie follows. For a bit, Marjorie floats over the upstairs rail and levitates. All of it caught on reality TV cameras. There are moments when author Tremblay nails the creepiness and terrifying encounters between the sisters that suggest this is going to
get bad for both girls and their parents. What makes the story even more eerie is that the narrator, Merry, is only eight. Although, she is telling the story ten years after the fact, the little girl who remembers is completely unreliable and does her best to recall all that happened. Tremblay tells the story through Merry’s Blog. Her Blog is flippant and unclear. Tremblay communicates well -- his writing is fine, but in his attempt to tell the story in perhaps a fresh new way, he loses the magic and power of the horror. This story works best when he tells the events straight forward from Merry’s young point of view. The first three chapters are confusing and odd. But once Merry takes the helm and describes what happened from her perspective, the story comes together and is suddenly compelling. I love the use of an unreliable narrator
SAFETY TIPS
in literature. This is my favorite story telling method because it forces the reader to engage and look more closely at what is happening in the text but in the wider world. It takes a very competent, self-aware writer to successfully make this work. A child’s perspective is always going to be off center. A young person does not have the experience or knowledge to know what is really happening and whether it’s right or wrong, good or bad, common or uncommon. This makes a story far more engaging when wellwritten. As the story unfolds, it becomes obviously clear there is something else going on. But the reader must wait, and that wait does not lead to the expected surprising payoff. That would normally be a good thing, but in this case, the ending is a strange and sad finale that seems out of the blue. Yet, it is horrifying and disturbing. I only wish it was executed better. Tremblay’s attempt to make the story more suspenseful through the use of a Blog and interviews, actually distracts from the terror. It certainly doesn’t help. I do like that the author leaves the reader wondering whose head is really filled with ghosts. Little Merry is very scary.

FORE PETE’S SAKE… PLAY IT SAFE!
T
he season has arrived and many are shouting that four lettered word GOLF! Golf really is a very safe sport and if you follow a few basic safety rules injuries can be reduced or eliminated. Swinging of metal clubs propel golf balls at high speeds. If you’re in the way of either you’re in danger. Following a few basic guidelines can help ensure your safety and that of those around you on the course. Keep Track of Those Around You. When a golf club is in your hands and you are preparing to swing, it is your responsibility to make sure that your playing partners are a safe distance away from you. Never swing a golf club when another golfer is close to you. Practice makes perfect but be a little extra cautious on practice swings, when it’s easy for golfers to let their guard down. Don’t hit your ball until you are confident that any golfers up ahead are out of your range. Be Heads Up. Even when it’s not your turn to hit, stay aware of your surroundings. FORE Pete’s Sake, Cover Up When You Hear It! Yell “Fore” as loud as you can if suspect someone may be in danger. This is the universal word of warning in golf. If you hear it, cover up, cover behind your golf bag, tree, cart, (or friend) and cover your head with your arms. Make yourself a smaller target, and protect your head. Patience: A virtue desired by many possessed by few! Yes, there are those occasions when a very slow group is ahead of yours, and frustration takes over. We’ve all seen it or know them. That “special” person who gets angry and tee’s up intentionally
hitting into the slow-playing group ahead. If you’re ever tempted to do this, don’t! It’s very rare, but golfers have been killed after being struck by golf balls. Many have been injured. Just take a deep breath and enjoy the scenery. Drive Safely. Driving a golf cart isn’t a difficult thing to do. Observe all safety rules. Don’t hang your feet out of the cart while it’s in motion; don’t go off roading over bumpy terrain; don’t drive at full speed around curves or down steep hills. Don’t let small children drive the cart. Don’t drive the cart if you’ve had a few too many beers. And watch out for other golf carts at points where paths cross. Sunscreen! Protect your skin by always using a strong sunscreen. Wear a wide-brimmed cap to keep the sun off your face. Drink Fluids … the Right Kind of Fluids! If you’re playing golf under the sun on a hot day, you’ll be sweating off a lot of body fluids. Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water. Save the beer for the 19th hole Lightning. At the very first sign of lightning, head for the Clubhouse. I was amazed during a recent lightning storm at how many golfers kept playing through. If caught out in the open and unable to find shelter, get away from your clubs, your golf cart, water and trees, and remove metal spikes if wearing them. If in a group, group members should remain at least 15 feet apart. If you feel a tingling sensation or the hair on your arms stands up, crouch in a baseball catcher’s position, balancing on the balls of your feet. Fold your arms in front of your knees, keep your feet together and your head forward. Be Safe! Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna

STONER ELECTION GUIDE
A
re you only voting this year in order to legalize marijuana? If so, we here at CV Weekly want to help you in completing the rest of your ballot as there are a couple of other propositions on the ballot as well as a race for President, the US Senate and a bunch of other positions. Legalize marijuana with a YES on 64. Vote NO on 51 as this is a boondoggle for builders at your expense. Vote YES on 52 as everyone wants it except for a couple of pissed off union leaders. Vote YES on 53 if you think our elected’s should get our approval before spending billions of dollars. A YES on 54 means that those same elected types in Sacramento have to tell people what they are voting on before they vote on it. You aren’t high - sometimes they have secret votes.
A YES on 55 means that the wealthiest will pay a small tax to help the poorest in paying for healthcare. If you vape, vote YES on 56 so that you can pay more for vapes and smokes with nicotine. Vote YES on 57 if you think prison officers should be able to parole criminals whenever they want and not have to listen to judges. Vote YES on 58 if you think schools should offer bilingual education to kids who struggle with English. Vote YES on 59 if you want to tell Washington DC that corporations shouldn’t be able to buy elections. You want to see more condoms in X-rated films, right? The only way that this may happen is if you vote YES on 60. In truth, those filmmakers will just move to Nevada costing California a lot in taxes.
Want cheaper prescription drugs? Vote YES on 61. Do you want to get rid of the death penalty? Vote YES on 62. If you think the mentally ill and felons need easy access to ammunition, vote NO on 63. Vote NO on 65 as this is a b.s. initiative by plastic bag makers. Want to remove the endless appeals that death row inmates have? If so, vote YES on 66. Do you want to get rid of free plastic bags at grocery stores? Vote YES on Prop 67. This is not deja vu all over again, you voted for a plastic bag ban just a few years ago. For President, your vote doesn’t matter as Hillary has an insurmountable lead in California despite the emails on Weiner’s computer. As such, vote for Tommy Chong or a third party candidate so that you can tell ‘the man’ that you don’t like the lame choices offered up. For California Senator, the fix is in and President Obama’s favorite, Kamala Harris, will win. Obama once sort of said that Kamala is one hot piece of legislator (which did not sit well with Michelle). For the House of Representatives, Dr. Raul Ruiz is the incumbent and will win. If you don’t like him, vote for yourself or Jeff Stone as you both have the same chances of winning.
November 3 to November 9, 2016
For State Assembly, you know that this state is run by the Democratic Party, right? As such, vote for Greg Rodriguez of Palm Springs if you want a representative who can get the Democrats to help out on issues critical to the Coachella Valley. While Chad Mayes of Yucca Valley is a photogenic and seemingly nice Republican, do you really think that the Democrats will do anything to help him out? As for the rest of the local races, I’m out of space so you are on your own. As there are a lot of good people and a few self-serving people running, spend a little time with friends and try to make some thoughtful decisions. DALE GRIBOW ON THE LAW
IF THE IRS CALLS HANG UP.. AN UPDATE
L
ast Friday Oct 28, 2016 our Desert Sun reported the Attorney General just charged 56 people in a $300 Million fraud scheme. Workers stationed at “boiler room” call centers in India posing as federal and state agents would threaten the victims with a scripted message. I too received one of these calls where my phone register showed a call from the Riverside Sheriffs and they said they were on their way to arrest me for not paying taxes. I called my friend Stan Sniff, the Sheriff of Riverside County, who assured me it was part of an elaborate scam. The scheme had a scripted caller saying they were IRS or Immigration authorities calling re an outstanding (fictitious) fine, immigration warrant or a phony tax debt. The scam involved a network of telephone call centers in India using personal information they had illegally obtained to scare the victim. US coconspirators laundered the money using wire transfer and debit cards. They would prey upon the elderly and immigrants... in other words our neighbors. The victims were told to go to Walmart, for instance, and buy debit cards that would be loaded with a few thousand dollars.
They were then instructed to read the card number to the caller. An 85 year old woman was threatened with arrest if she did not pay a phony outstanding tax bill. The scammers would often ask for a “good faith” payment to stop their imminent arrest. When I got the call I was told a patrol car was on its way to arrest me. As an attorney I should have known better but I too was scared that I had unknowingly done something wrong. Numerous fraud schemes involving mortgage assistance, outstanding tax collection, foreign government assistance and even to companies promising to return lost money are rampant throughout the US. The scammers always request money to be paid up front for illegitimate services, or the threat of arrest, eviction or property seizure. A common scheme involves a caller who claims to be a member of law enforcement, or an employee of the court system. The victim is told s/he has a warrant for failing to appear for jury duty. The caller demands payment for the warrant via credit card information, or a Green Dot card. The scammer keeps the victim on the phone while he or she travels to a store to obtain
the requested card. The caller instructs the victim not to tell anyone with whom they are talking. After obtaining the serial number of the debit card the money deposited is immediately removed by the caller. No Riverside County Court or Sheriff’s Department employee will ever contact the public and ask for financial information or payment in lieu of attending court proceedings, or to make up for failure to appear for jury duty. US Government Agencies do not make these kind of calls.
You would receive a letter/notice in the mail if that was the case. However with the holidays approaching these phone/fraud scams will certainly go up. WATER CONSERVING PLUMBING FIXTURES
T
here have been a lot of articles written over the last couple of years about conserving water due the prevailing drought conditions in California and I know that no one really wants to read one more article on the subject, but starting on January 1, 2017 a new law goes into effect requiring owners of single family homes (does not apply to condos) built prior to 1994 to install Water Conserving Plumbing fixtures (WCP). That’s right; I said it’s the LAW and it requires WCP fixtures on all houses, not just when they are sold! Unlike most laws there are no “Low Flush Toilet Police” that will be breaking down your door with a warrant to inspect your plumbing fixtures and so far I cannot find any penalties for non-compliance. But there are some events that can trigger this requirement which I will explain later in this article, but first let’s take a look at the sales data for last month in the Coachella Valley. According to the Desert Area MLS (as of 10/31/16) there were 813 pendings of residential properties here in the Coachella Valley in October. That’s up again from the 786 pendings in the previous month (September) and still showing good volume and representing another significant increase in pendings when compared to the same time last year. In September there were 650 solds and in October we had only 625 solds showing the expected
24
marginal seasonal decrease in closed sales. But again, this is still a significant increase over last year when we sold only 596 homes in October 2015. In summary, we continue to surpass last year’s total sales through October with a total of 7,779 homes sold this year compared to only 7,300 homes sold through September last year (2015) representing an approximately 7.5% increase. Our inventory of homes for sale was up significantly this month with 4,350 homes available on October 31, 2016 compared to 3,942 homes available on October 1, 2016. Home prices continue to rise with the highest increase on entry level homes where inventory is scarce and more modest increases on the more expensive homes as summer demand for these properties usually falls. The continued increase in sales over the summer months and now the increase this month in inventory suggest that our market is again self-correcting and as the trend continues it will likely keep most valley home prices in check until the end of the year. What exactly is a WCP fixture? According to the new law WCP fixtures include toilets that use less than 1.6 gallons of water per flush (and no, the old “brick in the toilet tank” does not qualify for this!), showerheads that spit out less than 2.5 gallons of water per minute (gpm), or any interior faucets that emit less than 2.2 gpm. The new California law will mandate toilets
with a 1.25 gallon per flush, kitchen faucets at 1.8 gpm, and bathroom sink faucets at 1.2 gpm. Not coincidentally, starting on January 1, 2016 it was illegal for any store in California to sell plumbing fixtures that did not meet these standards. [By the way, CVWD, Desert Water Agency and MSWD all offer rebates on replacement toilets meeting these standards.] So if there is no one going door to door inspecting our current plumbing fixtures and there is no penalty for non-compliance, when would you have to upgrade to WCP fixtures? Obviously if one of your old fixtures break down and needs to be replaced; assuming you will not be importing your new fixtures from out of state, you will need to install the new WCP fixtures. If you plan to do any remodeling, repairs or room additions that require a building permit the governing agency will either not issue the permit or not sign off on the final inspection unless all plumbing fixtures are in compliance with the new law. And if you plan on selling your home, the law requires that you disclose whether or not your existing plumbing fixtures are in compliance. This is a specific question on the legally required disclosures that we use in a sales transaction and I would advise both my buyers and sellers to make sure the home is in compliance at that time. In addition, there is a specific clause in the Residential Purchase Agreement that refers
to “Government Requirements and Retrofit” which I believe if used can obligate a seller to make these upgrades as well. My last bit of advice on this matter is that if you do replace your existing fixtures with the new WCP fixtures; make sure you keep a copy of both the receipt and the product information so that you will have “proof” if it is ever needed. SLIM MAN
BEARD OR SHEARED? A university in Australia just released a study about men’s beards. The Aussie academics wanted to know if women liked men with beards. And if so, what kind of beards. So they asked more than 8,000 women what they liked in manly facial hair. The university took photographs of 36 men in various stages of facial hairdom—light stubble, heavy stubble, short beards, and long beards. They showed these hairy photos to women folk and asked them to rate the pics on two levels. The first level was general attractiveness. The second level was how attractive facial hair was for relationships. Women found light stubble most attractive, in general. But women rated men with full beards as most attractive for long-term relationships. Which I found surprising, because women in general are a lot cleaner than men. Leave a man alone for a long weekend, and he won’t shower or comb his hair or notice that he has a piece of pizza stuck to the back of the T-shirt he’s been wearing for 3 days. Women like things to be clean. And a beard probably isn’t the cleanest thing in the world. After an evening of chicken wings and nachos, there’s got to be some leftovers in that tangle of scruff hanging down from his chin. In terms of hygiene, I thought women might not want to settle down with a guy who has a beard like Tom Hanks in Castaway. Also, women are an inquisitive bunch. And I thought for sure that women might think a guy with a full beard was hiding something. Like a tattoo of his former girlfriend. Or a scar from a prison knife-fight. Or his pet hamster. But, no. Women like full beards. Shows you how much I know about women folk! Here’s how the Australian university study worded the results: “…Beardedness may be attractive when judging long-term relationships as a signal of intrasexual formidability…” I’m not sure what “intrasexual formidability” is, but if you grow a beard, you’re more likely to find out. I’ve never had a beard. I just don’t have enough hair on my face. I tried once, and my friend called my attempted facial hair an “Apache” beard--a patchy here, a patchy there. I looked like a feral cat with mange.
My dad had a long beard. He didn’t take great care of it; it looked like small birds might fly out of it any second. There are so many kinds of shrubbery growing around the facial region these days. You have the too-cool-to-shave-for-a-fewdays look, which is great for young dudes. But when old guys don’t shave for a few days, they look like they just escaped from the loony-bin. You’ve got the soul patch, that little triangle of growth beneath the bottom lip. You’ve got the lamb chop sideburns, a look that Elvis rocked back in his white jumpsuit days. Moustaches are making a comeback. My brother has a Fu Manchu moustache that he’s had for a while. The 1980’s cocaine dealer moustache is back in style. The Salvador Dali moustache has yet to make a comeback, but you never know. Lots of men are growing hair on their faces these days; that’s a fact. I think I know why. It’s the cost of razor blades. According to an English newspaper, prices have gone up almost 100% in the past few years. If those Australians want to do a study, find out why razor blades have become so ridiculously expensive. Because next thing we know, women will stop shaving their legs. And you won’t need a university study to figure out that men won’t find that attractive. Especially long term. LOTS TO LEARN IN EARLY NBA ACTION..
T
he NBA season got off to an unpredictable start when the San Antonio Spurs stunned the basketball world by annihilating Golden State, 129-100, in the opener for both teams. Many thought the Spurs would take a step backward this season, following the retirement of Tim Duncan, but San Antonio has the league’s best record (4-0) and 2nd-best scoring margin (+15.8). Meanwhile, out East, Cleveland is also undefeated (3-0), and ranks 3rd in scoring margin (+12.7). Spread Watch This is not your grandfather’s version of the Sacramento Kings this season and it’s not just because they have a brand new spanking arena. Dave Joerger has arrived from Memphis, and his players are actually allowing him to coach them. So, perhaps the dysfunction which permeated this franchise during the George Karl era has been stamped out. Indeed, none other than the NBA’s best coach, Gregg Popovich, has noticed a big difference between last year’s and this year’s Kings. After the Spurs came back from a double-digit deficit to defeat Sacramento, 102-94, Popovich commented that the Kings are “playing defense... the way they played defense in Memphis,” and was impressed that the Kings players bought in so quickly to Joerger’s philosophy. Sacramento is 2-1 on the season, including a big 19-point win at Phoenix and a 3-point home victory over the Timberwolves. The Kings are 2-0-1 ATS this year (and 6-0-1 ATS their last seven games, dating back to the preseason). This week, they will be tested by a road trip, in which they will play five games in seven days. The game on Saturday at Milwaukee might be the best time to step in and play on the Kings, as they’ll have had the previous night off. Total Watch The Detroit Pistons suffered a major loss when their point guard, Reggie Jackson, developed knee tendinitis. Jackson will be out until December and his absence severely hampers the Pistons’ offense. Detroit has been starting Smith at the point, and signed journeyman Beno Udrih to come off the bench. The obvious problem is that neither Smith nor Udrih has Jackson’s ability to break down the defense off the dribble to create offense. Not surprisingly, Detroit has yet to play a game Over the total and I’m not just talking about Detroit’s three regular season games, as all six of Detroit’s preseason games also went Under as well.
This week, Detroit will host games against New York and Denver, sandwiched around a road trip to Brooklyn. The Saturday night game vs. Denver looks to be a perfect time to play the Under, as all four meetings between these two clubs have gone ‘under,’ while Denver is currently ranked fifth in defensive efficiency. Injury Watch The Bucks’ Khris Middleton might not be a household name, but he’s one of the league’s best young players and certainly deserving of the five-year, $70 million contract he signed 16 months ago. Unfortunately, Middleton tore his hamstring in September, and will be lost for much of the season. Even worse for Milwaukee is that its roster is bereft of wing players who can step in and replace him. So, even though Milwaukee has two other talented young players in Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jabari Parker, it has been unable to adjust to the loss of Middleton. So, the fact that Milwaukee is off to a 1-2 SU and 0-3 ATS start isn’t much of a shock. This week, Milwaukee will play games against the Pelicans, Pacers, Kings and Mavericks. I touched upon the Bucks/Kings game, above. But another solid opportunity to play against Milwaukee will be on Tuesday, when it visits New Orleans. The Pelicans have lost their first three games, notwithstanding Anthony Davis’ brilliant start (37.7 ppg). If there is a silver lining, it’s the fact that two of their losses were to (arguably) the two best teams in the league - San Antonio and Golden State. Certainly, Milwaukee will be a step down in class. And, since 2006, New Orleans is 17-3 straight-up and 12-7-1 ATS vs. the Bucks (including a perfect 7-0 ATS if the pointspread is less than 5 points). Schedule Watch The Oklahoma City Thunder are 3-0 this season, and have outscored their opposition by 8.7 ppg, but have played a bunch of creampuffs. Specifically, the Thunder’s wins have come against three of the league’s four-worst teams (76ers, Suns and Lakers). Their schedule will take a severe U-turn this week, as Oklahoma City will play road games against the Clippers and Warriors, before returning home to take on the up-and-coming Timberwolves. Even though it will be stepping up in class, Oklahoma City will be worth a look in its revenge match against Kevin Durant and the Warriors. Since 1991, such teams have covered 61.8% of the time.

Hayes said the volunteers are also needed to attach the 6,893 name tags to the flag poles. Each name tag bears the name, rank, branch of service, age, and hometown of each fallen hero. Volunteers will also stand at the podium and read out loud the names of each of the 6,893 fallen heroes along with their personal details contained in each name tag. “We’re hoping to recruit as many volunteers as possible now so we know who we can count on,” Hayes said. “We’ll also need volunteers to help us take down the flags on closing day, November 12, so we can put them back into storage.” The Rotary Club of Cathedral City has organized a Healing Field event every year for the past 11 years. This year’s event includes an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. Nov. 5 with a speech by Master Gunnery Sergeant William M. Neudauer from the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base. FREE WILL ASTROLOGY
Week of November 3
ARIES (March 21-April 19): I am in awe of your headfirst, charge-forward, no-distractions approach. In fact, I aspire to incorporate more of the Aries-style directness into my own repertoire. But I also love it when, on rare occasions, you flirt with a more strategic perspective. It amuses me to see you experimenting with the power of secrets. Your wisdom often grows at an expedited rate when you get caught up in a web of intrigue that exposes you to dark joys and melodramatic lessons. During times like these, you feel fine about not having everything figured out, about not knowing the most straightforward route to your destination. You allow the riddles and enigmas to ferment as you bask in the voluptuous ambiance of the Great Mystery. Now is such a time. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): I am pleased to inform you that at least 30 percent of what you think you know about love and lust is too prosaic. Probably too narrow and constrained, as well. But here’s the good news: As soon as you agree to relinquish the dull certainty of that 30+ percent, you will open yourself to a surge of fresh teachings. And soon, I expect, dewy throbs and hot flows will awaken in all the erotic parts of your body, including your heart and brain and soul. If you’re brave enough to respond, generous lessons in intimacy will keep you entertained for weeks. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Over the last two decades, well-meaning Westerners have donated a profusion of clothes to low-income folks in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Kind and magnanimous, right? Yes, but their largesse has had an unintended consequence: the demise of the textile industry in those African countries. With this as a cautionary tale, I’m asking you to take inventory of your own acts of benevolence and charity. Are they having effects that you approve of? If not completely, how could you adjust the way you give your gifts and bestow your blessings? CANCER (June 21-July 22): Is it possible that you might flourish as a topdog after all the work you’ve put in as an underdog? Can you wean yourself from the worried fantasy that you’ve got endless dues to pay, and then harness your imagination to expand your confidence and build your clout? I believe you can. And in the coming weeks I will unleash a flood of prayers to the Goddess of Holy Reversals, asking her to assist you. Now please repeat after me: “I am a creative force of nature. I am a strong song of liberation. I am a wise animal with direct access to my primal intelligence.” LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): The next two weeks could be smooth, peaceful, and bland. Is that the experience you want? Mild satisfactions, sweet boredom, and slow progress? There’s nothing wrong with any of that. Please feel free to loll and loaf as you explore the healing charms of laziness. Grant yourself permission to avoid conflict and cultivate sunny self-protectiveness. This is one of those times when silence and stasis are among the best gifts you can give yourself. Welcome the rejuvenating power of emptiness! VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): It’s time to replace banged-up, dried-out old obsessions with ripe, juicy fascinations. It’s your duty to phase out numbing traditions and deadening habits so as to make room for exciting new rituals, customs, and sacraments. Can you summon the electric willpower to shed influences that are technically “correct” but lacking in soulfulness? I think you can. Do you love yourself enough to forswear pretty but meaningless titillations? I think you do. Now get out there and do the hard work necessary to bring more serious fun into your life. Homework: Write an essay titled “What I Can Do to Be More Playful.” LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Over the course of his or her life, the average British person says “Sorry” on over 90,000 occasions. The typical Libran Brit probably utters routine apologies upwards of 120,000 times. Libras from other countries may not reach that heady level, but many do specialize in excessive politeness. (I should know, as I have three planets in Libra in my natal chart.) But in accordance with the astrological

indicators, I am authorizing you to be a bit less courteous and solicitous than usual in the next two weeks. Don’t go overboard, of course. But allowing yourself some breathing room like this will help you get more rigorous access to your authentic, idiosyncratic, soulful urges -- which will be very tonic. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Until 2007, Scotland’s official slogan was “Scotland, the Best Small Country in the World.” Deciding that wasn’t sufficiently upbeat, the government spent $187,000 on a campaign to come up with something better. “Home of Golf” and “Home of Europe’s Fastest Growing Life Sciences Community” were among the proposed phrases that were rejected. The ultimate choice: “Welcome to Scotland.” I bring this to your attention, Scorpio, because you’re in a favorable phase to rebrand yourself. But I hope you will be more daring and imaginative than Scotland. How about “Smolderingly Alarmingly Brilliant”? Or maybe “Safely Risky and Unpredictably Wise” or “Home of the Best Secrets Ever”? SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): I cheer you on as you attend to your difficult but holy duties. I send you my love as you summon the wisdom and resourcefulness you need to weather the gorgeous storm. Here are clues that might be useful: Whether you are partially or totally victorious will depend as much on the attitude you hold in your heart as on your outward behavior. Be grateful, never resentful, for the interesting challenges. Love your struggles for the new capacities they are building in you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The coming weeks constitute the harvest phase of your personal cycle. That means you have the pleasure of gathering in the ripe rewards that you have been cultivating since your last birthday. But you also have the responsibility to answer and correct for any carelessness you have allowed to affect your efforts during the previous eleven months. Don’t worry, dear. My sense is that the goodies and successes far outnumber and overshadow the questionable decisions and failures. You have ample reasons to celebrate. But I hope you won’t get so caught up in your rightful exaltation that you’ll neglect the therapeutic atonements. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Like England and Spain, the Netherlands has a royal family, including a king, queen, prince, and princesses. They’re an egalitarian bunch. The young ones attend public schools, and the previous queen’s birthday is celebrated with a nation-wide flea market. The king’s crown is attractive but quite economical. Its pearls are fake, and other “jewels” are made of glass, colored foil, and fish scales. In accordance with the astrological omens, I propose that you create a regal but earthy headpiece for yourself. It’s high time for you to elevate your self-worth in an amusing and artful way. What fun and funky materials will you use in your homemade crown? PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): In her book, A Natural History of the Senses, Diane Ackerman reports on the eccentric methods that professional writers have used to galvanize their creative process. Poet Amy Lowell relaxed into her work day by puffing on Manila cigars. Novelist Colette plucked fleas from her cat. T. S. Eliot’s poetry thrived when he had a head cold. Novelist George Sand liked to jump out of bed after making love and immediately begin writing. Novelist William Gass, who is still among the living, wanders around outside taking photos of “rusty, derelict, overlooked, downtrodden” places. As for D. H. Lawrence: climbing mulberry trees naked energized his genius. What about you, Pisces? Now is an excellent time to draw intensely on your reliable sources of inspiration-- as well as to seek new ones.
ASK JENNY
November 3 to November 9, 2016
BY JENNY WALLIS
“THEY TELL ME THEY UNDERSTAND.. ”
D
ear Jenny, I haven’t read this in your column before and I can’t help but ask! I am a single man, I love dating, meeting new people, getting to know them and well, just having fun! The problem I seem to always run into is that I get involved with women who want monogamous relationships. That is something that I do not want, at least at the current moment. But the thing is that I tell that straight from the beginning. I tell them I am just looking to have fun and want to keep dating more than one woman at a time, they seem fine with it. They tell me they understand and feel the same way. Then as our relationship progresses, they tell me they want more from me. They want to begin dating exclusively. I don’t understand why this keeps happening to me. It’s not like I try to hide anything from them, I am honest with my intentions from the beginning! Sincerely, - Mark ----------------------------------------------Hi Mark, The majority of women, not all, but the majority of them, they are looking for a monogamous relationship. Being with someone, someone to love and have fun with and not have to worry if they are out there with anyone else. Finding someone who you can live happily ever after with, who wouldn’t want that? It’s not hard to say that you don’t want a monogamous relationship. Especially when you are not dating anyone, and wish that you were. It’s not hard to say that you aren’t looking for marriage or a forever partner, especially when you are lonely for a companion. What a person says they want at the beginning of potential relationship is usually a little different than what they really want. It would be great if during the first date we put all of our cards on the table, but usually, we keep things that are most important to us private, understandably so. When a person is single and he or she feels lonely, they may begin to feel a little out of sorts. When I say out of sorts, I mean that they may start feeling they are not enough, they may start to feel that they would be better when they are with another. Simply put, life may look
better if another person is living it with you. All of these thoughts and feelings only come when you are not satisfied with yourself. When you are not satisfied with yourself and you are looking outside of yourself for something to make you satisfied, you’re never going to find relief. (Maybe temporary relief, but it won’t last) When you meet a person and go out on a date, you state that you are not looking for a monogamous relationship. But understand that when the other person replies, it is usually just to get closer to what the other person is looking for; in this case it’s a partner. So from the beginning the romance is based on different needs and wants. Fast forward to when the couple has been casually dating for a while, things seem to be working out for the person interested in a non-monogamous relationship. But the other person who has been feeling so good since he or she is now being cherished and someone is paying so much attention to them, only wants more. They don’t want this feeling to go away. Their primary focus has been on the other loving them and adoring them and completing then, and of course, that means being monogamous. So imagine their surprise to hear that you still don’t want monogamy. Unfortunately Mark, when two people start off wanting different things it is hard to come together at the end. It is best to find out about the other person. Where are they coming from? Are they looking for another person to complete them? Or are they already accountable for themselves and ready to move forward in their life? Lastly, what a person focuses on the most is what they draw to them. In this case, if a person focuses so much on how they are NOT looking for a partner who does NOT want an open relationship. That is what they will get! - ❤Namaste, Jenny Don’t forget to follow Jenny at www. askjennynow.com, find her on facebook or contact her at 760-505-0952

LIFE & CAREER COACH BY SUNNY SIMON
SUCCESS STRATEGIES
O
ver brunch my friend Cathy related a story about her days as a young waitress in LA. One morning during her shift, a hopeful starving-actor entered the restaurant asking for the least expensive nutritious item on the menu. Cathy served him and upon completing his meal the fellow realized he could not cover the full amount of the tab. My friend waved it off saying she would make up any shortage for him, but the fellow insisted on making up the difference, and he did. For the next 30 minutes during a hectic business surge he happily bussed all of the tables in Cathy’s section. Upon hearing Cathy’s narrative, my friends and I broke out in smiles. We nodded in agreement. Whether it’s getting the last squeeze out of a flattened tube of toothpaste or stretching your meal budget, if you’re creative about employing some techniques, you can always accomplish your goal. It’s worth noting our young actor friend employed a few key strategies. First he asked for advice. In response, Cathy pointed out an entrée. When you’re in need of something as mundane as a menu suggestion, or on the flip side, important career advice, do not be reticent in getting help. Too often fear gets in the way of asking for the assistance required
to get to the next level. Remember that the next time you need a boost, or helping hand. Rather than tough it out alone, speak up. The young man’s goal was getting hired, but he also had a need to fill. Acing his upcoming audition required sustenance. Like our actor, you must map out the tools required to get yourself to the goal line. You’ll never reach your destination on an empty tank, or get that promotion without the requisite skills. Plan ahead then do the work. Lastly, and what I admired most about our hero, he was prepared to deal with any bumps in the road. We all know there is no such thing as a smooth safe path to achieving an ambitious goal. When you’re trying to move your career forward, don’t get discouraged with a setback, deal with it. Perhaps the actor thought ahead about how he’d address a financial shortage, or maybe it was just a quick reaction. Whatever the case, he found a positive way to resolve the situation. I urge you to review your annual goals by assessing your needs and planning ahead. Then get creative and stay flexible as you maneuver your way to success.
