aving been established the same day the world shut down on March 18, 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Reefer Madness is a dispensary that has beaten the odds and retained their reputation as a Palm Springs cannabis staple. Appropriately themed with Alice in Wonderland, Reefer Madness Dispensary and Lounge sends customers down a rabbit hole of Medical Marijuana-derived products and organic certified goods. The dispensary is Steven Wijatyk’s creation that stemmed from genius and some minor health issues. Using cannabis helped Steven through some stomach issues and, in turn, he wanted to start his own business in the cannabis industry. His sister, Amanda Adkins, works as the Marketing and Social Media Manager. “My brother is the owner of Reefer Madness and called me in a panic. He had no website, no logo, just his newly opened shop and limited products. I stepped in to help and designed his logo and took over the shop's Instagram feed as well as Facebook. From there, I continued to help with whatever was needed and eventually became his marketing manager,” explained Adkins. Having now been open a year and a half, the Reefer Madness inventory has grown two fold. The dispensary now has over 1,500 different products. They carry all different kinds of flower strains—ranging from popular options like Blue Dream to some rare finds such as Candy Land by Top Shelf. Reefer Madness also has one of the largest cannabis selections in the Coachella Valley ranging from flower, edibles, topicals, tinctures, vapes and concentrates. “We pride ourselves at finding fun new products such as our Luchador Gummies and new infused potato chips by Tsumo Snacks. I never imagined there would be THC infused potato chips and different flavors too,” shared Adkins. This year, Reefer Madness will be participating in the 35th annual Greater Palm Springs Pride event. The dispensary will be

participating in the parade and decking out the Reefer Madness box truck with Pride colors and decorations. They will also have a booth on Arenas Road and will be giving away a lot of fun Reefer Madness merchandise items such as sunglasses, t-shirts, bags, and more. Additionally, the staff will be giving away some coupons with great deals with the opportunity to win big on a prize wheel. There will be some swag and non-medicated treats from some of their distributors that are a favorite among customers. “Being that we are gay-owned and operated, we are an inclusive work place and support the LGBTQ community in Palm Springs and the surrounding desert cities. We believe it's important to show our customers and staff that we support equality and diversity and that our establishment is a safe place for the community to come and enjoy themselves,” stated Adkins. The Lounge at Reefer Madness is tastefully decorated and has been home to several fun events, such as Monday night football pizza parties, Taco Tuesdays where guests can bring tacos or have them delivered while smoking their favorite brands while they enjoy their meal. The Reefer Madness Lounge recently hosted a scary movie night for Halloween and have an upcoming tie-dye event with one of their distributors, Select Brand, on November 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A list of upcoming events in the lounge can be found on the dispensary’s website, ReeferMadnessLounge. com. “I feel having the lounge and the ability to hold fun events inside our lounge sets us apart from other dispensaries. We have been called the Cheers of the neighborhood. I hope most folks are old enough to get that reference, but basically we are known as the fun local hangout where everyone knows each other and makes friends. The Reefer Madness Lounge recently had a make-over by High Design, and the dispensary is being featured on Discovery Plus. The show designers gave the lounge its unique retro

Palm Springs feel while maintaining the fun, whimsical Alice in Wonderland theme to create a must-see and experience place. Adkins loves the bonds that have formed and the way she has been able to affect her customers while working at the dispensary. “My favorite memory and experience working for Reefer Madness was when we had a woman come in whose mother was in her 90’s, and she was looking for cannabis products to ease her mother’s pain. We spoke with her for a long time and let her know of all the products she could use to ease her mother’s pain and help her. She wrote everything down and said she would be back, and that she wanted to speak to people at other dispensaries. She came back to us an hour later, and said hands down that we were the most knowledgeable about the products and the most caring of her mother's condition, and she felt the most comfortable in our shop. She purchased products and I felt like I really helped, not only her mother, but I felt I helped her as well during a very hard time in her life. Sometimes people forget that cannabis is helping people who are in tremendous amounts of pain, and I feel very fortunate that I work with some very compassionate budtenders who really care about helping people,” recalled Adkins. Despite top-notch branding and success, Reefer Madness is still a small business and Adkins is personally proud that they are not corporately owned. Her hope for the business in the future is to expand to other locations such as LA and even her family’s hometown in Arizona. The top priority will always be maintaining their “mom and pop” status and staying the “Cheers of the neighborhood”. Visit the Reefer Madness website, www. reefermadnesslounge.com, to learn more about the dispensary.

on this very special personal appearance and opportunity to ask him questions. The plot of This Side of Crazy evolves around Ditty Blaylock, the most prolific singer in gospel music history, who is being honored by Gospel Music Network. But there is one glitch. Ditty has promised a reunion of The Blaylock Sisters, her three adult daughters who were once national sensations – “Little Superstars for Jesus.” Rachel, the oldest sister, who lives with Ditty, is furious when she finds out that her baby sister Bethany, an atheist and lesbian, and Abigail, her middle sister, who has “anger issues” and currently is confined to a mental facility, are headed home. These complicated sisters have been estranged for over twentyfive years -- and extreme past circumstances, including a husband left in a coma, have made reconciliation impossible. Once reunited, secrets are revealed, tempers flare and family wounds are exposed. But… the show must go on!

Palm Canyon Theatre’s production of This Side of Crazy is directed by Richard Marlow and has a strong cast of four powerful women actors: Deborah Harman, Yo Younger, Denise Strand and Melanie Blue. true Coachella Valley native, Matt King has spent much of his very young life soaking up the desert music scene. At the age of twenty, this CVHS graduate has already been involved with multiple, respected projects and built a reputation for not only being a solid musician, but a generally standup dude. I have had the pleasure of witnessing a tiny bit of the metamorphosis of Matt’s talents, as he has built himself into a staple of the local music scene. In addition to his musical accomplishments, he has also made contributions as a writer for the local publication, CV Independent. With so many creative accomplishments within his 2 years of legal adulthood, it’s only natural that he would decide to make the bold move of branching out into the role of front-man of his very own,

solo project. Matt and the Kings, has released an EP entitled, Animal Kingdom, which has been two years in the making through a lot of ups and downs. King has a lot to be proud of with the release of Animal Kingdom. I got the opportunity to give it a listen and the results make total sense. The diversity of styles and transitions in the songs reflect the fact that he has been molded by his exposure to, and participation with a multitude of musical projects that brought him to this point. CVW: For such a young guy, you have been picking up a lot of experience over the past several years. How did you get started out in music? King: “I would say that my brother, Chris really kind of showed me the ins and outs. He used to be in a band with Nick Hales ten years ago called Fist Full of Glass. I was always pretty much a fly on the wall during those practices. He started showing me a lot more music as I grew older and one day when I was in middle school, I was super into The Beatles and thought to myself, ‘You know what? I wanna pick up the bass.’ So, I started playing around my freshman and sophomore years and that's when I met the guys from Frank Eats the Floor, which was the first band I was ever a part of. It’s just been sort of a big snowball over the past 5 or 6 years since.” CVW: Over those 5 or 6 years you have done quite a bit musically in a relatively short amount of time considering all of the projects you have been a part of. King: “Yeah, I’ve definitely worn many different pairs of pants. I’ve been with Frank Eats the Floor, CMFs...I recently just joined Allies and now I’m doing my own thing.” CVW: You mentioned the fact that your big brother, Chris was a big influence on not only the idea of you being a musician but, exposing you to a lot of different music. Do you think that there is anything, genre wise that you are into that might surprise anyone? King: “I think I’ve been pretty all over the place with stuff I have made. Just listing off all the bands that I've been a part of, I feel like they are all vastly different and that really reflects in my solo music where I cover punk, funk, rap, and electronic stuff. So I don’t really like to let myself get stuck in one place.” King continues: “I don’t want to jump the

gun in talking about my new stuff but, all the guitar work...or everything you would think was a guitar was actually me playing a bass that was input through an octave pedal.” CVW: Okay, let’s get this straight. I know that you did the vocals, bass and guitar tones for this EP. Is this project all you? King: “As of now, Matt and the Kings is going to be me doing everything in the studio. I record everything on my computer. Vocals, bass, guitars with the octave pedal. I play the preset keyboard if I need it and all the drums so far have been midi drums. But then live, I’m going to have some musicians join me, one of them being my brother, Chris, along with my old friends John and Jason Smith from the CMFs.” CVW: What was the sequence of events or thought process that led you to the decision that you wanted to create a solo project? Was that something you have always thought about doing? King: “Before the pandemic hit, I was playing shows with Frank Eats the Floor and CMF’s pretty regularly. The pandemic paused both of those situations. Some stuff picked up with the CMFs a little bit later but, right off the bat I was kind of just alone and playing music and scared to go outside really. I had always kind of toyed with the idea of trying to make some stuff on my own, but never really had the time to do it. With all of the time that I had on my hands I ended up teaching myself how to use programs like Audacity in a much better way than I was using it before. I started playing around with some ideas. I reworked some of the Frank Eats the Floor songs that I really liked...there's two of them on there. And the rest just kind of came out of thin air.” King continues: “I didn’t really write any of them down. Some I wrote a little bit of

os Angeles hair metal band LA Guns is bringing its “Checkered Past” tour to Fantasy Springs Resort Casino to rock the outdoor venue for a special edition of Rock Yard on Steroids on Friday, Nov. 12, 2021. Rock fans are in for a sizzling sonic experience at this free concert featuring a band with a legendary past. Veterans of the Sunset Strip’s metal scene, LA Guns was formed in 1983 by guitar player Tracii Guns and, then unknown singer, Axl Rose on lead vocals. The band eventually split off into two groups, LA Guns and Guns N’ Roses, respectively. LA Guns has sold 6 1/2 million records, including 1988's L.A. Guns and 1990's Cocked and Loaded, both of which were certified

gold. The latter album contained the hit single "Ballad of Jayne" that went to #33 on Billboard's Hot 100. From the mid-90's through the 2000's, after changing lineups twice, L.A. Guns continued to tour and release new music. The current lineup consists of Tracii Guns, Phil Lewis, Ace Von Johnson, Johnny Martin and Shane Fitzgibbon. Following their successful performance at SiriusXM's HairNation Festival in May of 2016, LA Guns went into the studio to record the critically acclaimed, The Missing Peace, the highest selling release for Frontiers Music in 2017. Their next album, The Devil You Know, was released 2019 to the same critical acclaim. The band’s latest offering, Checkered Past is scheduled for release in November 2021.

but, the majority of it was just wholesome, improvisational stuff that I grew to like and formatted down. One of them being, “Your Mattjesty.” (Giggling) That was last year and honestly, a much more low quality recording. Then I got a Macbook and started upping my production game and the CMFs started taking off with all of our pandemic activities with the live streaming of band sessions and skits. It was around my birthday that I asked for an octave pedal. It’s usually for a guitar, you know. Jack White and Tom Morello use them and I really started toying around with the idea of using one on a bass. I don’t know if anyone else is doing that, or I made that idea up but I thought to myself, ‘I bet it could work.’ So I got it for my birthday and shortly afterward I got covid. So, I had this new period of time where I was really alone and couldn’t do much and so I learned how to use this octave pedal and wrote this EP plus maybe, ten or eleven other songs in that two or three week period where I was really sick and couldn’t leave my room. So this release is a product of that time period. After I got better I kind of went back into my life and lost the time I wanted to finish these songs. Bits and pieces of my time since then have been dedicated to flushing this out and now it’s here.” You can check out the first live performance of Matt and the Kings at The Annual Concert for Autism on Sat, Nov 20th at Big Rock Pub. CONSIDER THIS

C

hrissie Hynde first indicated her affinity for Bob Dylan back in 1994, when The Pretenders covered “Forever Young” on Last Of The Independents album. Born a decade after the Bard of Hibbing, she was besotted by his music early on, so it seems wildly apropos that when Covid 19 hit, Chrissie hunkered down in Maida Vale, England and passed the time by recording her favorite Dylan songs, releasing the results piecemeal, via the interwebs. Now they’ve all been collected for her third solo effort, Standing In The Doorway. When Chrissie and her band The Pretenders burst on the scene and stormed the charts in 1980, it felt as though they came out of nowhere. But their ascent was decades in the making. An Akron, Ohio native, Chrissie fell in love with Rock & Roll almost immediately, especially once the British Invasion hit in 1964. The Beatles and the Stones became her obsessions. As the years progressed, that list expanded and included The Kinks, The Doors and the Stooges. During her teens, she skipped the usual rites of passage like boyfriends and proms. She didn’t want to date Paul McCartney or Mick Jagger, she wanted to be them. She attended Art school at Kent State and was on campus when anti-war protests took a deadly and fatal turn on May 4th, 1970. It was during this era that she began to get serious about music. One of her first bands included future Devo visionary, Mark Mothersbaugh. An avowed Anglophile, Chrissie finally made it to the U.K. a few years after school. Rather quickly she got a job writing for the leading music magazine, the New Music Express (N.M.E.). As soon as she got the lay of the land, she placed an ad in the competing music rag, Melody Maker, looking for like-minded musicians. She briefly collaborated with Jon Moss, Tony James and Mick Jones, all three later skyrocketed to fame in Culture Club, Generation X and The Clash, respectively. By 1978, she had recorded a demo and hired a manager. She connected with bassist Pete Farndon, drummer Martin Chambers and guitarist James Honeyman-Scott. Inspired, in part, by the classic Platters song, they became The Pretenders. Their eponymous debut arrived in 1980, their sound was a crackling amalgam of British Invasion, Punk and New Wave. As The Pretenders’ lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, she flipped the script, redefining the role of front-woman. She wasn’t a boozy, blowzy Blues Belter like Janis Joplin, a Punk-Poet androgyne like Patti Smith, nor was she a Gypsy nymph swathed in silks, crushed velvet and patchouli, a la Stevie Nicks. Chrissie swaggered like Jagger and radiated the smoldering charisma of the Doors’ frontman, Jim Morrison. Sure, she’d strut in her (faux) leather pants, but she wasn’t afraid to appear tender and vulnerable. Following the release of their second effort, Pretenders II, the band suffered a

8

double loss. Two days after Chrissie fired Pete Farndon for addiction issues, James Honey-Scott died from heart failure-as a result of cocaine intolerance. A few months later, Pete was found dead in his bathtub, following a heroin overdose. Chrissie and Martin persevered, recruiting a new bassist and guitarist. Their third long-player, Learning To Crawl, arrived in early 1984 and became a huge critical and commercial success. By the skin of their teeth, The Pretenders truly triumphed over tragedy. Since then, the band has cycled through myriad lineup changes, with Martin quitting and rejoining a handful of times. Beginning with 1986’s Get Close, Chrissie and a rotating cast of bassists, drummers and guitarists have released a string of albums under the Pretenders moniker, Packed, Last Of The Independents and Viva El Amor took her through the 20th century, while Loose Screw and Break Up The Concrete arrived in 2002 and 2008 respectively. When the band took a hiatus, she partnered with J.P. Jones and his ragged compadres, The Fairground Boys. Their alliance yielded one album under the unwieldy title, J.P., Chrissie & The Fairground Boys. 2014 saw the release of her first official solo album, “Stockholm.” Three years later, the latest iteration of The Pretenders recorded Alone, produced by fellow Akron-ite and Black Keys frontman, Dan Auerbach. A second solo album, a mix of Jazz, Blues and Rock standards entitled Valve Bone Woe, arrived in 2019. 40 years after the release of their first record, with Martin back behind the drum kit, the band roared back in 2020 with Hate For Sale. Hailed as their strongest

effort in four decades, it displayed the same spiky melodicism that characterized their debut. All revv’ed up and ready to hit the road, the band was waylaid by (you guessed it), the Covid 19 pandemic. Like a kid stuck inside on a rainy day, yearning to play, Chrissie made good use of her downtime by recording her favorite Dylan songs. Very much a homemade effort, the record unfurls slowly, as Chrissie clears her throat, counts to three and launches into a languid version of “In The Summertime.” Acoustic guitars intertwine, shadowing her still-supple contralto through the first verse, as she rounds the chorus, fluttery keys, pinwheeling bass and crashing cymbals are folded into the mix. “… Summertime” was originally found on the 1981 Shot Of Love effort, just as Bob was beginning to emerge from a serious (and controversial) immersion into Christianity, the album signaled a return to form, veering from the sacred to the temporal. Still, lyrics like “Strangers they meddled in our affairs, poverty and shame was theirs, but all that suffering was not to be compared with the glory that is to be/And I’m still carrying the gift you gave, it’s part of me now, it’s been cherished and saved, it’ll be with me unto the grave, then unto eternity” indicate that he was still on a quest for spiritual salvation. Cover songs can be tricky. No one wants a rote regurgitation of the original version. Clearly, these songs have significance for Chrissie and she has reconfigured them to suit her own sui generis style. She deftly recalibrates a couple of tracks from the 1983 album, Infidels. First up is “Sweetheart Like You,” which, stripped to the bone, becomes a stately piano ballad anchored by flickering acoustic guitars

and woozy keys. She easily navigates a blatantly patriarchal narrative intent on rescuing a damsel in distress; “You know a woman like you should be at home, that’s where you belong, taking care for somebody nice who don’t know how to do you wrong/Just how much abuse will you be willing to take, well, there’s no way to tell from that first kiss, what’s a sweetheart like you doing in a dump like this.” “Don’t Fall Apart On Me Tonight” is powered by gutbucket bottleneck guitar, swirly acoustic riffs, a wash of keys and rippling mandolin runs. We join our program already in progress, as lyrics attempt to forestall a break-up; “I ain’t too good at conversation girl, so you might not know how I really feel, but if I could, I’d bring you to the mountaintop girl, and build you a house of stainless steel/But it’s like I’m stuck inside a painting that’s hanging in the louvre, my throat starts to tickle and my nose itches, but I know I can’t move.” Chrissie’s willowy vocals manage to wipe away a bit of Bob’s bitterness as she quietly implores “Don’t fall apart on me tonight, I just don’t think that I could handle it, don’t fall apart on me tonight, yesterday’s just a memory, tomorrow’s never what it’s supposed to be, and I need you.” The best tracks here find Chrissie hopscotching through eras, tackling Dylan deeeeep cuts rather than covering more obvious hits. “Love Minus Zero/ No Limit” stretches back more than 55 years to the “electric” side of his Bringing It All Back Home record. A painterly ode, her version hews closely to the original arrangement. Incandescent mandolin and high-strung guitar lattice over sparkly keys and a relaxed rhythm. Although there’s no chorus to speak of, the melody meanders sweetly as Chrissie waxes rhapsodic about a muse who sounds too good to be true; “My love, she speaks in silence, without ideals or violence, she doesn’t have to say she’s faithful, but she’s true like ice, like fire.” Courtly, finger-picked guitar and reedy accordion adds some continental heft. The outro weaves a tapestry of guitar and accordion with sylvan bird sounds and a revving and rumbling motorbike. Jumping ahead 10 years and 10 albums later she puts her imprimatur on “You’re A Big Girl Now” from Blood On The Tracks. That muse has moved on, and the song is suffused with tenderness, heartache and grief. Achingly pure mandolin coils around up-close and intime vocals, filigreed fretwork and plangent piano. Softly teasing out each verse, Chrissie is equal parts contrite and confused, hoping for a second chance; “A change in the weather is known to be extreme, but what’s the sense of changing horses in midstream, I’m going out of my mind, oh-oh, with a

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com

pain that stops and starts, like a corkscrew to my heart, ever since we’ve been apart.” Fast-forward to 1997 for the title track, which originally appeared on the late-career renaissance record, Time Out Of Mind. In Bob’s hands, this croaky-lonesome dirge felt sepia-toned, awash in bitterness and regret. Chrissie recasts the song as a technicolor lament. Churchy piano chords are matched by piquant guitars, shimmering keys and her authoritative contralto. Resigned and world-weary, the lyrics retain a glimmer of hope; “I know I can’t win, but my heart won’t give in, last night I danced with a stranger, but she reminded me that you were the one, you left me standing in the doorway cryin,’ in the dark land of the sun.” Clotted keys and elegiac guitars are leavened by a sleigh bell shake, paring down to a gentle acoustic strum and Celtic-flavored whistle. Finally confiding “It always meant so much, even the softest touch,” before being vanquished by the song’s closing verse; “See, nothin’ to be gained by any explanation, there’s no words that need to be said, you left me standing in the doorway cryin’ Blues wrapped around my head.” Other interesting tracks include an ambitious take on Bob’s early ‘80s masterpiece, “Blind Willie McTell” and a feathery version of the lovely but obscure “Tomorrow Is A Long Time.” The record closes with “Every Grain Of Sand” a midperiod classic from the Shot Of Love

album. Liquid guitar arpeggios partner with sturdy piano notes, but quickly cede the spotlight to Chrissie’ contemplative vocals. Dylanologists have spent decades trying to decipher the dense ruminations contained within. But she seems content just to wrap her pliant contralto around majestically constructed couplets like “Oh the flowers of indulgence, and the weeds of yesteryear, like criminals they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer/The sun beat down the steps of time to light the way, to ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay.” The record was produced by Pretenders guitarist James Walbourne and Tchad Blake (who has played with everyone from Crowded House, Elvis Costello, Fiona Apple, Tom Waits, Los Lobos, T-Bone Burnett and Ani Difranco). While Chrissie concentrated on vocals and guitar, James added piano, keys, acoustic guitar, high strung guitar and backing vocals. Tchad provided additional keys and percussion. There aren’t too many artists that can manage the grit, gravitas and chutzpah salted in the mix of most Dylan songs. (Case in point, Billy Joel’s execrable read of “To Make You Feel My Love” or Guns N’ Roses flippant version of “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door). Chrissie Hynde’s approach is deft and nuanced, as a result Standing In The Doorway is lean and unfussy, eloquent and slightly cranky. Exactly as it should be.

DÉJÀ VU ‘DUNE’? BY ROBIN E. SIMMONS

avid Lynch’s much-berated edition of “Dune” (1984) was a critical and commercial flop. Lynch himself has disavowed the film. Further, he says he has no interest in the current version in theaters and streaming on HBO Max. Denis Villeneuve version of Frank Herbert’s massive and hugely relevant film has already met with widespread commercial and critical success. In looking again at Lynch’s version, there are a number of things that deserve our admiration. First of all the production design is jaw-dropping and the fact that Lynch’s movie covers the gist of Herbert’s daunting

book on screen in two hours! Another thing, what’s the significance of the pugs (dogs)? And why does Duncan Idaho only get only two minutes of screen time before he dies? The ending if Lynch’s version was/is) disappointing to fans of Herbert’s bestseller. A voice-over tells us Prince Paul Atreides the messianic hero becomes the powerful dictator he feared he would become, even though he’s issued an era of peace – and then he makes it rain! Not a good ending. This great looking –baffling and beautiful -- 4K editions from Arrow Studios was mentioned on these pages before. The two-disc limited edition includes a treasure trove of bonus material that's alone is worth the price of the set. It’s fun to take a look

back, especially after experiencing Denis Villeneuve’s breathtaking adaptation. The real difference between the two films – s one local film buff put it -- is that one was made by a madman (Lynch) who admitted he had no or little interest in the material and the other was made by a mega fan (Villeneuve) of Herbert’s meaningful tale. What did you think? Drop me a line, I want to hear from readers. robin@coachellavalleyweekly.com

No permit is required to hike Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail, but any vehicle parked in Humber Park will need a National Forest Adventure Pass ($5 per day or $30 per year). Bikes are not allowed on this leisurely trail, but horses are allowed, and dogs are permitted on leashes. Maxwell Scenic Trail is not one of those trails. This leisurely alternative is 5.2 miles round trip with 675 rolling feet of elevation change. The gradual and enjoyable dirt single track overlooks the mountain community of Idyllwild and is appropriate for hikers of all abilities. The trail passes peaceful streams, quiet forests, and sterling San Jacinto Mountains views of Tahquitz Rock and Strawberry Valley. Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail runs south and downhill from Humber Park to an alternate trailhead on Tahquitz View Drive in Idyllwild. Those with a second vehicle and less time to hike, can use Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail as a 2.6-mile one-way shuttle hike. However, the trail displays different views in both direction,

making it a worthwhile out and back track. Even if the destination is just another road, the journey is rewarding enough to cover twice. Start from Humber Park, a trailhead in San Bernardino National Forest on the edge of Fern Valley, a community that neighbors Idyllwild. Humber Park has parking for Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail as well as trails to Tahquitz Peak, San Jacinto Peak, and the Devil’s Slide. Before you take a single step down Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail, you will get a scenic view of Tahquitz Rock, also know as Lily Rock, a sheer granite peak busting above the pines just east of the trailhead. SAFETY TIPS FROM THE CHIEF’S CORNER BY FIRE CHIEF SAM DIGIOVANNA

FALL RIGHT INTO SAFETY THIS WEEKEND! CHANGE YOUR CLOCKS – CHANGE YOUR SMOKE DETECTOR BATTERIES!

I

“ t’s time to change our clocks this coming

Sunday November 7th back one hour for daylight savings. It is a good time to change your smoke detector batteries and check their condition,” says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. Two-thirds of home fire deaths occurred in homes without working smoke alarms. Since most fatal fires occur at night, it is essential that every home have working smoke alarms to provide an early warning. Eighty percent of child fire fatalities occur in homes without working smoke alarms additionally Adults 75 and older are 2.8 times more likely to die in a home fire. A working smoke detector doubles your chance of surviving a home fire. Change Your Clocks – Change Your Batteries - Battery’s in a smoke alarm should be changed at least twice a year, even if they are hardwired into the electrical. A good time to remember to check your smoke alarm and change the batteries is when you change your clocks twice a year as daylight saving time begins and ends. Placement - Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, in the hallways leading to the bedrooms, and on each level of your home including the basement. Smoke alarms should be mounted on the ceiling four” from the wall; wall mounts should be 4-12” from the ceiling. Do not install near draft areas such as windows or vents. Call your local fire department if you are unsure about placement. Smoke Alarm Maintenance - In addition to

changing the batteries twice a year, you should test your smoke alarm every month by simply holding down on the test button. Vacuum your alarm at least once a year. Dust and cobwebs can impair sensitivity. Never paint over a smoke alarm. Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. When the Alarm Goes Off - If the alarm goes off crawl low to the ground under the smoke and exit your home quickly. Do not try to take anything with you, just get out. Once safely outside, go to your family meeting place to ensure that everyone got out safely. Once you are out, stay out! Make sure to prepare and practice an escape plan including a family meeting place. Just like schools practice fire drills, families should also practice what to do if their smoke alarms go off. Remember, every day a smoke alarm saves somebody’s life!

THE VINO VOICE

BY RICK RIOZZA

A LITTLE MADEIRA MY DEAR?

I

t’s that time of year where we begin to recommend wines for the holidays: More reds than whites (hey! How about that Orange wine?); of course our fair share of bubbly and some tasty dessert wine for the plethora of sweeties out there. As you may know, I don’t have much of a sweet tooth; I’ll always go for savory over cake & cookies (Donuts notwithstanding!). Although I love the French Sauternes, the Vintage Ports, the German Trockenbeerenauslese, and the Hungarian Tokaij, my favorite sweetheart will always belonged to Madeira. Madeira is both simple to write about, or it can be a rather involved story. Let’s go with the simple: American-wise, this extraordinary wine has been a part of some of the greatest historical events from Thomas Jefferson’s toast at the signing of the “Declaration of Independence” in 1776 to the presidential oath-taking ceremony of George Washington. Internationally speaking, this wine gets its name from the island of Madeira, a small, beautiful rock island about four hundred miles from Portugal—off in the Atlantic Ocean. Madeira’s unique taste comes from repeatedly heating the wine. It also carries a touch of smoke for some good complexity—and, I’ll get to that story in a bit. While Madeira wine has varying sweetness levels from dry/sweet to sweet/sweet) and there’s always some high acidity, keeping the dessert wine refreshing. Even the sweet/sweet Malmsey grape carries acidity. Madeira is a fortified wine made generally made from 5 different grapes grown on the island; most of the time you find a blend of the grapes. I recommend single varietal Madeira. Sercial and Verdelho are lighter bodied with more citrus and acidity—but in a sweet background. You’ll wish to look for a Malmsey or a Bual for some great sweet notes of roasted nuts, stewed fruit, maple syrup, caramel, and toffee. The wine savvy holiday gift is to present this wine with a nice box of chocolates. As with a hamburger—one really needs to personally enjoy Madeira and not just read about it. It’s not Marsala, nor Port, nor Sherry. It’s its own thing; especially when it comes to that “smoke” note in the wine itself. So here goes the “smoke” story: (And it’s one of the most romantic stories in wine lore) Once upon a time, a tyrannical Portuguese explorer lost his love to a lucky swarthy lothario. The rebellious young couple found their way to the Madeira Island—so far away from the madding crowd, and, that angry admiral. They decided to play the blissful Adam & Eve and frolicked naked in the lush garden island. The jilted navigator was after all a capable seaman, and, unfortunately for the couple, the annoyed explorer finally found the duo and his anger boiled as he watched them dancing around. The couple quickly ran into the forests for safety; however, the scorned sailor had his men set fire to the entire island. The island forest was so dense that it burned for seven years straight. During that time, people on the mainland of both Portugal and around North Africa, could see giant plumes of black smoke way out in the ocean. They assumed that was the edge of the world—ah! That’s why that’s why! Is that a fun bedtime story to enjoy with your

12

wine and chocolates, or what! Anyway—that soot seeped well into the ground and now all those grapes grown on the island carry that loving “smoke” note that makes its way into the wine. So that combination of grapes, brandy, smoke, and the island’s unique terroir—along with cooking the wine while it’s being produced, gives Madeira the quality of aging for as long as one can keep it properly stored. One can go online and find perfect bottles of Madeira dating back to the late 1700s. During a recent restoration project at Liberty Hall Museum on what is now New Jersey’s Kean University, the staff discovered nearly three cases of Madeira wine from 1796, as well as around 42 demijohns from the 1820s. The quality of the wine was magnificent. On-line one can find a 1790 H.M Borges Terrantez 'T' Vintage for $17,416; or, an 1800 J. S. Terrantez for $16,698. Back in the 80s when I was purchasing vintage wines for my client, I had the hair-brained idea to purchase as much 1850 D'Oliveira Madeira Verdelho Reserva there was available, thinking it would take-off—investment wise, like Vintage Port. It didn’t—but we at least got to enjoy the mistake...cheers! to that! Cooking with Madeira is of course very popular. But please use the newer stuff that doesn’t cost much. One weekend when I was away on business, my wife made her dad Steak Madeira. Unfortunately, I accidently left an open bottle of 1870 Madeira on the kitchen counter. You guessed it—geez! I still have one bottle left of the 1850 D’Oliveira Madeira Verdelho, which is resting over at the Wine Vault of the Desert in Palm Desert. I’m always asked how much is that Madeira worth. The answer is, “whatever the market will bear.” How much you got? The sexy dessert pour for the holidays is Madeira; serve dry Madeira at around 58 degrees and sweet Madeira just slightly cooler than room temperature. It’s great as an apéritifs or a digestif. For meal pairings: dry Madeira is best served with sushi, smoked salmon, creamy soft cheese, or fruity desserts. Sweet Madeira wine tastes excellent with blue cheeses, dried fruit, and your favorite dark chocolate desserts. Cheers!

EVANGELIST JEREMY BOUDREAUX RETURNS TO THE COACHELLA VALLEY

Tuesday night Bible Study at 7 p.m. Jeremy Boudreaux is a dynamic preacher from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He has served under the leadership of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries for 20 years, with 10 of those years

being an Associate Pastor of Crossfire Youth Ministries. “My mom had me when she was 16 years old,” said Jeremy Boudreaux, “My grandparents basically raised me. I was born in 1980 and my grandfather passed away when I was 6 years old. My grandmother was saved as a child and listening to Brother Swaggart’s music comforted her as she drew closer the Lord. She was filled with the Holy Spirit in 1986.” Being around such wonderful Spirit-Filled music definitely planted a seed in his heart. However, like many young teenagers, he was heading down the road of abuse with drugs and alcohol. He is the oldest of 5 children and has 4 younger sisters. “I was saved in 1999 and immediately I knew I had to be part of this Ministry. The Spirit was driving me to be here. Now of course, from 1999 to 2001, there was a struggle living the Christian life because I didn’t understand the Message of the Cross and I didn’t know how to live for God. I was in and out; in the Church and then out in the world until I finally got the Message of the Cross. As a young Christian, I can’t explain the demonic attacks against me. If I tried to put it into words, people would think I was crazy.” He met his wife Rachel at Family Worship Center and they have been married for 17 years and they both work at JSM. He has ministered throughout the United States,

South America, Central America, Mexico and Canada and continues to travel throughout the country to proclaim Jesus Christ and Him Crucified to a lost and hurting world. “There is no hope in drugs and alcohol but once you’re on drugs and alcohol, there’s no hope within self to set one free, but there is hope in Christ Jesus, and He can make you free.”

FITNESS Nadia Popova explains why walking 20 min a day for 5 days a week can significantly improve your health and well-being. was born and raised in Ukraine where people walk a lot. Till today my 75 years old mother walks every day whether it’s just a brisk walk or grocery shopping trip. As you might know many countries in Europe has its cultural history of people being more active due to every day walking habits. Here is why. Walking protects your heart. Just like the rest of the muscles in our bodies, our heart needs to be strengthened through regular activity to remain healthy and strong. Thankfully, the simplest of physical activities — walking — can make a big difference. Some may believe that you have to get on the treadmill or hit the pavement for at least an hour to make it worthwhile. However, this might seem out of reach if you have a busy schedule or are not in the routine of regularly exercising. The good news is you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete or marathon runner to experience the heart-protecting benefits of exercise. Two long-term Harvard studies found that simply walking 20 minutes a day may reduce your risk of heart disease by up to 30 percent. Walking Slims you down. Regular brisk walking, when combined with healthy eating, is hugely effective for weight loss, helping you burn off extra calories. Walking also helps to reduce visceral

fat, also known as belly or abdominal fat which is especially dangerous to our health. If you don’t have time to get out for a walk, you can simply add in extra steps to your daily routine. Wearing an activity tracker is an excellent way to track progress and help keep you motivated. To start, go about your daily routine as normal for the first couple days to establish a baseline. From there, you can set small goals to increase your daily steps. You may surprise yourself with how quickly these small changes can add up. Walking Improves your mood. Exercise helps release endorphins that instantly improve your mood and trigger a positive feeling in the body. When performed regularly, exercise helps ease stress, anxiety and has even been shown to be as effective as psychotherapy at relieving moderate depression. Set a goal to walk 20 minutes at least five times a week and experience all the health benefits that a brisk walk can bring you. I hope you can put your walking into your regular routine and it can become your new habit. If you need help with regular exercise please reach out to us. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Are you still hoping to heal from psychological wounds that you rarely speak about? May I suggest that you consider speaking about them in the coming weeks? Not to just anyone and everyone, of course, but rather to allies who might be able to help you generate at least a partial remedy. The moment is ripe, in my opinion. Now is a favorable time for you to become actively involved in seeking cures, fixes, and solace. Life will be more responsive than usual to such efforts. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “The delights of self-discovery are always available,” writes author Gail Sheehy. I will add that those delights will be extra accessible for you in the coming weeks. In my view, you’re in a phase of super-learning about yourself. You will attract help and support if you passionately explore mysteries and riddles that have eluded your understanding. Have fun surprising and entertaining yourself, Taurus. Make it your goal to catch a new glimpse of your hidden depths every day. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Gemini novelist and philosopher Muriel Barbery says, “I find this a fascinating phenomenon: the ability we have to manipulate ourselves so that the foundation of our beliefs is never shaken.” In the coming weeks, I hope you will overcome any tendency you might have to manipulate yourself in such a way. In my view, it’s crucial for your mental and spiritual health that you at least question your belief system‚ and perhaps even risk shaking its foundation. Don’t worry: Even if doing so ushers in a period of uncertainty, you’ll be much stronger for it in the long run. More robust and complete beliefs will be available for you to embrace. CANCER (June 21-July 22): In her book Mathilda, novelist Mary Shelley (1797-1851) has the main character ask, “What had I to love?” And the answer? “Oh, many things: there was the moonshine, and the bright stars; the breezes and the refreshing rains; there was the whole earth and the sky that covers it.” I bring this to your attention in the hope of inspiring you to make your own tally of all the wonders you love. I trust your inventory will be at least ten times as long as Mathilda’s. Now is a favorable time for you to gather all the healing that can come from feeling waves of gratitude, even adoration, for the people, animals, experiences, situations, and places that rouse your interest and affection and devotion. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Our memories are always changing. Whenever we call up a specific remembrance, it’s different from the last time we visited that same remembrance‚ colored by all the new memories we have accumulated in the meantime. Over time, an event we recall from when we were nine years old has gone through a great deal of shape-shifting in our memory so much so that it may have little resemblance to the first time we remembered it. Is this a thing to be mourned or celebrated? Maybe some of both. Right now, though, it’s to be celebrated. You have extra power to declare your independence from any memories that don’t make you feel good. Why hold onto them if you can’t even be sure they’re accurate? VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): In 1962, astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth in a spacecraft. His flight marked the first time that NASA, the agency in charge of spaceflight, had ever used electronic computers. Glenn, who was also an engineer, wanted the very best person to verify the calculations, and that was Virgo mathematician Katherine Johnson. In fact, Glenn said he wouldn’t fly without her involvement. I bring this to your attention, Virgo, because I believe the coming months will be a favorable time for you to garner the kind of respect and recognition that Katherine Johnson got from John Glenn. Make sure everyone who needs to know does indeed know about your aptitudes and skills. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): According to an Apache proverb, “It is better to have less thunder in the mouth and more lightning in the hand.”

© Copyright 2021 Rob Brezsny

If you act on that counsel in the coming weeks, you will succeed in doing what needs to be done. There is only one potential downfall you could be susceptible to, in my view, and that is talking and thinking too much about the matter you want to accomplish before you actually take action to accomplish it. All the power you need will arise as you resolutely wield the lightning in your hands. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): To encourage young people to come to its shows, the English National Opera has offered a lot of cheap tickets. Here’s another incentive: Actors sing in English, not Italian or French or German. Maybe most enticing for audiences is that they are encouraged to boo the villains. The intention is to make attendees feel relaxed and free to express themselves. I’m pleased to give you Scorpios permission to boo the bad guys in your life during the coming weeks. In fact, I will love it if you are extra eloquent and energetic about articulating all your true feelings. In my view, now is prime time for you to show the world exactly who you are. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “If we’re not careful, we are apt to grant ultimate value to something we’ve just made up in our heads,” said Zen priest Kosho Uchiyama. In my view, that’s a problem all of us should always be alert for. As I survey my own past, I’m embarrassed and amused as I remember the countless times I committed this faux pas. For instance, during one eight-month period, I inexplicably devoted myself to courting a woman who had zero interest in a romantic relationship with me. I bring this to your attention, Sagittarius, because I’m concerned that right now, you’re more susceptible than usual to making this mistake. But since I’ve warned you, maybe you’ll avoid it. I hope so! CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Capricorn author Asha Sanaker writes, “There is a running joke about us Capricorns that we age backwards. Having been born as burdened, cranky old people, we become lighter and more joyful as we age because we have gained so much practice in wielding responsibility. And in this way we learn, over time, about what are our proper burdens to carry and what are not. We develop clear boundaries around how to hold our obligations with grace.” Sanaker’s thoughts will serve as an excellent meditation for you in the coming weeks. You’re in a phase when you can make dramatic progress in embodying the skills she articulates. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): As author Denise Linn reminded us, “The way you treat yourself sends a very clear message to others about how they should treat you.” With that advice as your inspiration, I will ask you to deepen your devotion to self-care in the coming weeks. I will encourage you to shower yourself with more tenderness and generosity than you have ever done in your life. I will also urge you to make sure these efforts are apparent to everyone in your life. I am hoping for you to accomplish a permanent upgrade in your love for yourself, which should lead to a similar upgrade in the kindness you receive from others. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You have at your disposal a prodigiously potent creative tool: your imagination. If there’s a specific experience or object you want to bring into your world, the first thing you do is visualize it. The practical actions you take to live the life you want to live always refer back to the scenes in your mind’s eye. And so every goal you fulfill, every quest you carry out, every liberation you achieve, begins as an inner vision. Your imagination is the engine of your destiny. It’s the catalyst with which you design your future. I bring these ideas to your attention, dear Pisces, because November is Celebrate Your Imagination Month. Homework: Describe what actions you’ll take in the next six months to make your world a funner, holier place. Newsletter. STOCK MARKETS REBOUND IN OCTOBER

A

s expected, equity markets rebounded strongly after drifting sideways to down over the last quarter. More than half of S&P 500 stocks were down more than 20% from their 2021 peaks at the end of September. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 6.4% during October resulting in year-to-date returns of 17% while the S&P 500 was up nearly 8% to 22.6%. Since 1945, the 3rd quarter has consistently been the weakest of the year (-0.2%) while the 4th quarter is typically the strongest (+4.2%). Where US markets were up roughly 20%, the rest of the world was up 9%. China posted the weakest performance, down 14% in 2021. UK equity markets were up 16%, Eurozone 14% and Japan 2%. Looking at the various sectors of the equity markets, Energy continued its exceptional run in 2021 as the global economy reopened. During October alone, Energy stocks which make up only 3% of US equities were up 15% to 60% for the year. Financials are another area benefitting from a nearly post-COVID world. Up 6.6% on the month, Financials (15% of US market) are up 31% for the year. After getting pummeled in 2020, real estate has shown a comeback despite many problems related to the change in work and shopping patterns. Representing about 4% of the stock market, Real Estate is up 29% on the year and an impressive 8% in October. Technology stocks which represent 25% of US markets have been top performers for years. After valuations drifted sideways

or downward over the summer, Tech was up 12% to 27% in October. Tech excludes stocks like Google or Facebook which are in Communications and Amazon which is in Consumer Cyclicals. The weakest market segment was in bonds. As rates begin to increase, the value of bonds has begun to decline as investors look for higher returns. While most of the early increases in rates are shorter in maturity, longer-term rates will adjust higher over time. Whether it is long-dated bonds or high yield debt, these two areas of the market appear to represent the most downside risk. As an example, a 0.2% increase in the yield on 10 year Treasuries eliminates one full year of interest from returns. Looking at the Dow 30, the trailing Priceto-Earnings Ratio (P/E ratio) was 23x at the end of the month. Stated differently, stocks were valued at 23 years of earnings. If we compare this with 25.7x from one year ago,

HOME SCAMS, DURING THE AGE OF COVID!

T

he Age of Covid has sure changed things. For one it has caused most of us to spend more time at home. Then there were the Stay Home Orders too. I wrote about all this in the beginning of Covid and predicted more Home Scams? It has never been easier for the Bad Guys to reach their “targets” at home and scam them. I was right! There are so many ways a bad guy can scam a good guy. Sometimes the scammer moves into a rented home and complains that nothing works and ultimately refuses to pay any rent. The scammer then extorts money from the homeowner for the poorly maintained home. The Scammer asks for $25,000-$50,000 to vacate, in lieu of the owner hiring a lawyer and filing an Unlawful Detainer lawsuit. This is what we call “money for keys”! Other Scammers offer to just rent the home for 1 month. They often say they want it just for August, when it is hot and no one wants a home in the CV then. Then after a month they will not leave. The homeowner may get a call offering a discount for a home DISH network. However, one must pay up-front for 6 months. The homeowner is told to go to the store to buy a “green dot moneypak card”. The money will be gone as soon as you read the card numbers to the con artist. Another scam involves a driver coming to

you can see that valuations have become more reasonable. Looking at the forward P/E ratio which uses 2022 earnings estimates, the ratio improves from 22.3x to 18.8x. What this tells us is that the value of the index is higher than last year, but the cost of the underlying stocks has improved. Better prices means that the dividend yield has fallen from 2.3% last year to 1.8% for this index. The S&P 500 had a trailing P/E ratio of 29.3x at the end of October which is significantly better than the pricey 37.3x level of one year ago. Looking at 2022, the P/E is expected to decline to a more reasonable 22.4x. Due to the emphasis on large tech stocks with this index, the dividend yield at 1.3% is 0.5% behind the Dow 30 and 0.5% lower than 2020. Negative real rates create a near-perfect financing market for large corporations. As a reminder, negative real rates occur when the borrowing rate is lower than the inflation

rate. While this negative real rate cycle will not last forever, the Federal Reserve have made it clear that they intend on maintaining a loose monetary policy for longer than most expect. While the discontinuation of the Fed’s $30 billion/month bond purchase program will lead to higher rates, the Fed have no intent of raising the Fed Funds rate until 2023. While we can expect a slowing in the economy as oil, food and housing costs impact consumer spending, demand remains stronger than supply globally. So long as the economic environment is supported by strong demand across the world, it is unlikely that we will see a significant decline in stock valuations. With additional federal spending expected from infrastructure work, economic conditions are expected to remain strong for equities. your home and suggesting a high price to buy your home. Sometimes they suggest needless repairs for the home …or a deal on a new deck or installing an alarm system. It may mean they ask you for money to pay up front for those services? As we age we do not always want to keep our Timeshare Homes, especially in the CV. In the past Timeshares were dangerous to purchase because of FRAUD risks. Today it is also dangerous when you SELL. The scam starts when you get a call at home, from a company that claims to have a buyer, for your timeshare property. The caller even gives you the name and number of the prospective buyer, who confirms interest in the sale. Sometimes someone contacts you offering to sell your timeshare and they try to get you to pay up front fees. A company, alleging to buy lots of timeshares, but only after the owner pays $500–$2000 via credit card for registration and other fees. With respect to rental properties, be wary of listings on Craigslist for “rentals by owner”, or vacation rentals, as there have been many such scams. A red flag should be raised when no phone number or email address is listed. In addition, prospective renters may be asked to send money for a home rental during a major city event, such as Coachella or Stage Coach. It is highly possible that the home

may not even exist, may already be rented to someone else, or may not even be for rent. Do your due diligence as I have seen it for Coachella and the Tennis Tournament events! When looking for a rental or looking to rent your home, look carefully at the spelling and language in the advertisement as they are often prepared by people from outside of the USA. You may want to check Google Maps to be sure the address exists. Also, be wary if the renter asks for money up front or asks for $40 to run a background check. In another scam, the caller claims to be from a home utility, or a service providertype company. The victim is told their bill is overdue, or a meter needs to be replaced at the victim’s expense. The caller demands immediate payment for the overdue bill, or installation of a new meter. If payment is not received, the victim’s service will be shut off. The caller demands credit card information or a Green Dot card as previously described. Remember, the bottom line is that everything is not always as it seems, “all that glitters is not gold”. So be careful and check before giving out any private information. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. We must all remain diligent and stay a step ahead, with the latest info and practical tips from the nation’s consumer protection agency. UGH! SERIOUSLY ANOTHER UPDATE!?! e feel your pain, and we know it’s tempting to postpone or just skip updates all together. We get it, however, by doing this it can expose you to significant security threats and restricts you from taking advantage of new features included in new software releases. These can include updates to your device’s operating system and firmware (commonly known as a 'Patch' or a 'Service Pack'), installed software and applications, and general bug patches. Unfortunately, most people postpone these "software updates" because these update notifications show up at inconvenient times. The process of these updates and patches can take long time to complete, therefore, most people put them off when they see such update notifications. According to a 2017 Pew Research survey, 14% of users never update their device's operating system, and 42% only do it when it's convenient, ignoring the fact that these updates also contain critical security patches. According to a research, such notifications can disrupt focus and even trigger depression and anxiety. 1. It comes with several new features - A software update offers several new features. Every year, new software versions are released with several new and useful features. You will add a lot of new features to your computer by updating software. Additionally, patches will eliminate computer bugs that cause your computer to slow down.

November 4 to November 10, 2021

BY DENNIS SHELLY

2. It reduces vulnerabilities - Security patches are one of the main reasons to keep the software and apps on your device up to date. As more devices are exposed to the Internet, the files that hold all of your product information are becoming more vulnerable to the security attacks. It's crucial that you don't overlook any critical software upgrades. Using an unpatched/outdated computer is equivalent to putting no locks on the doors, that attracts unwanted intruders. If you choose to ignore computer patches, you are opting to make your computer vulnerable to viruses and cyberattacks. To keep their malicious endeavor going, cybercriminals depend on users' apathy toward software updates. 3. It fixes crashes and bugs - When a company creates an updated version of the software, it fixes crashes, problems, bugs, and other issues. You can't expect problems

to go away if these applications aren't updated. Any piece of software created has bugs or room for improvement (some more than others). Manufacturers release changes when security flaws or bugs are found, small software improvements are made, and compatibility issues are addressed. Updating your software ensures that you are using the most up-to-date and bug-free version available. 4. It helps in data protection - You typically have a lot of documents and personal details on your computers. Cybercriminals are interested in the personal identifiable information, which covers anything from emails to bank account details. They can use it to commit crimes under your name or sell it on the dark web so that anyone can use it for cybercrimes. They can encrypt your data if it's a ransomware attack. To recover an encryption key, you may have to pay a ransom. Keeping the software and operating systems up to date will help keep hackers away. 5. Additional Enhancements and improved compatibility - In addition to

security fixes, software updates may include additional and enhanced features, as well as improved compatibility with various devices or applications. They can also make the software more robust by removing obsolete features. Each of these updates are intended to improve the user experience. Although frequent update notifications can be annoying, particularly if you have a number of different applications; they can improve your overall experience and ensure that you get the best out of your technologies in the long run. Although certain computer software allows you to approve and install patches manually; updating software on your mobile devices is much simpler. You can choose auto-update option to keep the mobile applications up to date. Ultimately, as irritating and potentially harmful as software update notifications are, leaving the software out of date is much more dangerous. Developers release updates in response to the detection of bugs, but refusing to update places the device or phone at risk of being hacked. Hopefully, if you are prompted to update your software, you will take the time to do so. A few minutes can save you a lot of hassle in the long run. PET PLACE

B

oozehounds is a spectacular local restaurant that caters to Coachella Valley dogs and their humans who love to dine with them. This pet-friendly gourmet restaurant, café and bar, opened its doors on April 27 in Palm Springs. What makes this venue unique is the inclusion of a doggie menu where Fido can select an entree or snack and dine along with you. What could be more fun for your beloved pup than an outing with you and getting treated to a special dish? Small and large businesses everywhere realize that it’s good business to welcome well behaved leashed canines with their customers. Restaurant patrons in most patio cafes can bring their dog and sit outside, though indoor dining areas are human-only in compliance with California health and safety codes. Boozehounds is the first Coachella Valley restaurant and bar that provides a special menu with healthy dishes for dogs. Their beautifully designed atrium and patio happily welcome lots of canines. There are some amazing dishes on their menu for folks with gourmet taste. Globally inspired, locally influenced dishes include vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free selections. The 48-hour miso-marinated Chilean sea bass is beyond description. Adobe Chicken with spiced coconut vinegar along with slow

roasted baby carrots in almond milk sauce is another tempting dish. The bar menu offers an amazing array of original cocktails. Fido has several main dishes to select from including a Chicken Bowl containing grilled chicken, steamed rice, and mixed cauliflower. There are also a variety of treats and snacks for the pups including Turkey Gizzards. Boozehounds is the creation of three long-time friends from Los Angeles who immigrated to Palm Springs. Dog lovers Jimmy McGill, Steve Piacenza and Bryan Rogers wanted to create a restaurant where the focus is on the canines. They also sought to provide a site that benefits homeless dogs, collaborating efforts with the Palm Springs Animal Shelter and other animal rescue organizations. Proceeds from one of their unique cocktails goes to the shelter. Co-owner Jimmy McGill explains, “Because we’re deeply indebted to our special city, we also intend to give back through events and fundraisers with an emphasis on our friends at the Palm Springs Animal Shelter. As a part time volunteer, I’ve seen first-hand how dedicated their entire team is when it comes to providing love, attention, and assistance in fostering and adoptions of cats and dogs.” Hosting monthly animal adoption events may be in Boozehound’s future. The restaurant’s logo pays tribute to

McGill and Piacenza’s own pet, a beloved rescue dog named Striker who passed away after 18 years. They adopted Striker from the Pasadena Humane Society, he was a treasured member of the family, and his legacy lives on at Boozehounds. Boozehound’s website explains, “We started Boozehounds for one simple reason, we love our dogs. We wanted to create a contemporary multifaceted space where people can socialize with their pups.” Bryan Rogers posted, “For the past 6 months, myself, Jimmy, Steve, and Jeni have poured our hearts and souls into building this and it’s finally here. If you’re coming out to Palm Springs anytime soon, come check us out.” Located on the property formerly occupied by Dink’s Restaurant and Ultra Lounge, the venue has spacious outdoor seating to accommodate many canine guests. The décor and views of the mountains are stunning. Plan your visit soon! The human menu is delicious, Fido will love it, and we love their commitment to rescue! Visit Boozehounds at 2080 N. GROOVES JAZZ SERIES IS SINGING FORGET ME NOTS THIS WINTER SEASON

THE WESTIN MISSION HILLS DEBUTS NEW EVENT SPACE WITH THE RETURN OF GROOVES

W

ith the launch of its brand-new event venue, The Backyard, The Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa is excited to announce the Grooves at The Westin Concert series is back with a new stage and all-star lineup. With artists like Patrice Rushen, Paul Brown, Peter White, Gregg Karukas and more, locals and travelers can enjoy 4 nights of smooth jazz in Greater Palm Springs. “Forget Me Nots” singer, Patrice Rushen takes the stage on Friday, November 19th with DW3, and Paul Jackson Jr. Part of the Cathedral City Balloon Glow Event, this concert will be the grand re-launch of the resort’s event space. Patrice Rushen is a four-time, Grammy nominee musician and composer and is a classically trained pianist who originally found success in the 70’s and 80’s with her signature fusion of jazz, pop and R&B. During this era, she composed and recorded the hit song, “Forget Me Nots,” which has been frequently covered and sampled by other artists. DW3 has established themselves as a popular national recording group with four Billboard charting hits – including “I Got You” (featuring Gerald Albright) and “Let the Music,” “I Can’t Tell You Why” and “California Dreamin’” from their hit 2013 & 2015 albums “On the Floor & Vintage Truth”. Since 2003, brothers Eric and Billy Mondragon and close family friend Damon Reel have set the high energy mood on cruises, jazz festivals, showrooms and clubs. Sharing the stage alongside Rushen and DW3, Paul Jackson Jr. is recognized by many as the most recorded guitarist in the world. Paul has been a member of numerous local bands from his early teens, including a band composed of himself and his siblings. Jackson began his own

solo recording career in the late 80’s. Most recently, Paul contributed his playing styles and composing chops to the Daft Punk CD, which garnered 5 Grammy Awards, was the #1 album in 104 countries and garnered Paul Grammy recognition for his contribution to the Album. On Saturday January 22nd, Brain Bromberg and Paul Brown kick off the start of the new year sharing a stage together. Brian Bromberg began his professional career as a drummer at the age of thirteen and his first big break came when he auditioned and joined the Stan Getz quintet in December of 1979. Paul Brown has had a four-decade journey through the worlds of pop, R&B and jazz. Starting as a drummer, he became an engineer for R&B legends (Diana Ross, Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin) before evolving into a two-time Grammy winning urban jazz producer (with over 60 #1 radio airplay hits) and finally a popular guitarist, artist and performer in his own right. In the 12 years since he released his debut album “Up Front,” Brown has released six albums (including three that hit the Top Ten on the Billboard Albums chart), scored countless hit singles, and done thousands of performances across the U.S. and internationally. On Saturday February 19th, Michael Paulo will energize the stage at the Westin. One of the most versatile and cosmopolitan saxophonists in pop, soul and contemporary jazz for nearly 35 years, Michael Paulo has added his distinct saxpertise to countless performances and has worked alongside artists including Al Jarreau (Paulo’s longest term touring association), James Ingram, No. 1 Smooth Jazz Trumpeter, and guitarist Rick Braun and Peter White, to name a few. Another milestone in Michael’s career is his recent appearance on a previously

unreleased Miles Davis record that was recorded in 1986. The unheard tracks were recorded prior to his release “TUTU”. The record was released Sept 6th, 2020 and reached the number 1 status on the billboard jazz charts in its first week. Get ready on Saturday March 12th for a spectacular show with Peter White and Gregg Karukas. Peter White is a guitarist and smooth jazz artist whose musical career has spanned over forty years from the time he started playing with rock legend Al Stewart in the seventies and singer Basia in the eighties to his many collaborations with Boney James, Rick Braun, Richard Elliot, Kirk Whalum, Dave Koz and numerous other. Gregg Karukas is a Grammy winning keyboardist/composer/ producer who has had 12 solo CD's over a three-decade career, with many #1 radio hits. "Serenata", his first ever solo piano project, offers romantic impressions of classic songs from iconic Brazilian artists Milton Nascimento and Dori Caymmi as well as new and reimagined Karukas originals. Coming out of a 4-year hiatus, Gregg found the challenges of both the COVID isolation and developing his solo piano voice to be the perfect catalyst for reclaiming beauty, hope and, most importantly, new original music. Ending the Grooves Series with a bang on Saturday March 19th, David Benoit and Barbara Morrison will have guests dancing the night away. David Benoit is a multi-Grammy nominated and chart-topping piano wizard who has had a four-decade career. The trailblazer has built an enviable career drawing inspiration from his vast influences which have included jazz, comics, film, Broadway and symphonies, to cite a few. David Benoit’s free-spirited
