lim Man and his band of big guns will be performing a livestream concert on Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 6 p.m. (PST) from a fully equipped soundstage in Anaheim, California. You can purchase access for $15 at slimman.veeps.com. The Palm Springs-based singer, songwriter, podcast host and chef released the double CD Slim Man LIVE at Vicky’s! earlier this year. The double album includes 28 songs pulled from over 4 hours of music recorded in June 2019 on a 24 multitrack console at Vicky's of Santa Fe in Indian Wells, CA. The first Slim Man release, End of the Rainbow, was released in 1995 and is more R&B with the Jazz and Soul hit Faith In Us. Young at Heart (2017) is on the swinging side of things and includes the masterstroke standards The Best Is Yet To Come and Nice ’n Easy. Coachella Valley Weekly communicated with Slim to learn more about his decked out livestream show and to provide further insight into one of the desert’s best improvisational musicians.
CVW: Your Slim Man livestream concert on Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 6 p.m. (PT) on a fully produced soundstage in Anaheim, CA sounds like a huge undertaking. Tell us more about the performance? Slim Man: “It’s the first time we've ever done something like this. But now's the time to try something different, right? I got a call from Gregg Hudson, he supplied all the backline gear for all the big SoCal Jazz fests. When the virus hit, he turned part of his warehouse into a really cool soundstage. He has all the best sound and lights, not to mention drums, amps and keyboards. He also built a recording studio and a video control room, and…she's a-so NICE! I went there last week…impressive. I'm excited about the show.” CVW: You are notorious for having such an illustrious cast of characters in your band? Give us a rundown on the players and their strong points. Slim Man: “Craig Chesnut is playing drums, we've been making music together for a while. He's such a strong drummer and
also adds a lot of cool percussion, shakers, cowbell and woodblock. Craig joined the band after our drummer at the time got thrown in jail! True story! Craig subbed that night and was amazing. Nick Sosa is playing guitar, he is a beast, he practices for hours a day, and it shows. He has such a command of his instrument. I saw some homemade videos online of him playing solo guitar and was so impressed I asked him to sit-in with us at Vicky's and he blew us away. Chase Huna is on sax, and he's got skills. He's got this natural feel, he plays and it just sounds right. Great vocabulary of notes. I was doing a Jazz jam a few years ago and Chase came up and sat in and played like a champ—with no rehearsal. And Tateng Katindig—the 'Thrilla from Manila’—his piano playing is so soulful and compelling. He's got vibe and deep knowledge of all the standards, and he plays from the heart. The first time I met Tateng was right before showtime at a Slim Man concert in Temecula, CA. We went on stage having never played together and Tateng was brilliant and magical.” continue to page 4

SLIM MAN BAND continued from page 3
CVW: Prior to the pandemic, you kept busy performing live at venues like Vicky’s of Santa Fe in Indian Wells, CA and Spaghettini’s in Seal Beach, CA. How have you kept your sanity amidst the pandemic? Slim Man: “I was pretty crazy before the pandemic. But I decided to keep myself ridiculously busy. I do two LIVE stream shows a week on Facebook, It's called ‘5@5’ on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5 PM PT. I've got a new Slim Man single coming out soon, and I've been putting this LIVE stream show together for the past month, so all that keeps me sane. Somewhat…” CVW: With all the additional time you have thanks to COVID-19, any update on your culinary endeavors and Slim Man Cooks II? Slim Man: “Slim Man Cooks II is in the works. Thirty recipes, thirty stories, thirty cooking videos, and it's looking good. It should be out in February 2021, and I'm pretty excited about it. We had a pretty successful Kickstarter campaign, so now I can take all that money and move to a foreign country under an assumed name.” CVW: The classification of music known as Jazz is an unconstrained form of expression. How do you feel Jazz will look and sound like post-pandemic? Slim Man: “It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. I've been writing music to cheer myself up. Other musicians I've talked to are writing melancholy stuff, some aren't writing at all. Will Donato, on the
other hand, has released 14 CDs already this year!” CVW: Why is it important to carry on the tradition of Jazz music, more specifically in the Coachella Valley? SLIM MAN: “My favorite thing about this music is the improvisation. Not many other styles have that element. It’s a tradition worth carrying on! And everyone in this band is a stellar soloist and impressive improviser. The people out here do a great job of supporting the music. They come out in full force and they really listen.” CVW: There is strong evidence that sound can drastically influence the way we taste food. What are other correlations between food and music? SLIM MAN: “Whether I'm making music or cooking, I like to get creative. For instance, the other day I wanted to make some manicotti, but instead of laying it down on its side the traditional way, I stood it up like a chimney. Instead of stuffing it with ricotta cheese, I decided to stuff it with shrimp and scallops in a spicy tomato sauce. I call it Slim Manicotti! I approach music the same way. What if you combine some Jazz chords with an R&B beat? Or write a Pop song with a Swing beat? In food and in music, you need to be creative and original. And you need to make sure nobody gets sick!” CVW: You’ve won the ‘Best Jazz Vocals’ category at the Coachella Valley Music Awards three years running now. What’s the musical legacy you intend to leave

e may know who the next President is by Wednesday morning, but down ballot issues may take weeks into January 2021. There are 33 US Senate seats; all 435 seats in the House of Representatives; 11 state governors; thousands of state senators and representatives; and many local city and county council races. Drug legalization measures are on the ballot in 7 states. Four states are voting on adult-use (recreational) cannabis legalization: Arizona, Montana, New Jersey, and South Dakota. Two states are voting on medical marijuana legalization: Mississippi, and South Dakota. Oregon voters will consider two separate drug reform measures. One would legalize the medical use of psilocybin. The other would decriminalize small amounts of all drugs. Los Angeles County Ballot Measures Carson will vote on whether to allow four “commercial cannabis operation centers.” The measure appears to leave the door open to allowing licensees to choose the types of companies – retail, cultivation, manufacturing – they would operate. Commerce voters will weigh in on six MJ company-development agreements struck between city officials and businesses. Hawthorne voters will decide whether to approve Measure CC, with a 5% gross receipts general cannabis business tax. The city currently prohibits all marijuana businesses.

when it’s all said and done? It's all about love!” CVW: We are living in some exhausting and troubled times. Anything encouraging you’d like to share with your audience? Slim Man: “Yes, I'd like to share a lyric

ELECTION RESULTS TO WATCH FOR IN 2020
Pomona voters will decide between Measure PM and Measure PO. Measure PM is a citizen-backed initiative that would enact 600-foot setbacks (the same as liquor setbacks) for cannabis businesses; Measure PO was placed on the ballot by city council and has 1000-foot setbacks. Jurupa Valley voters will decide on Measure U, to allow up to seven new marijuana retailers. In June 2018, the city voted against marijuana businesses. Orange County Ballot Measures Costa Mesa could become the second to allow commercial cannabis shops if voters approve Measure Q allowing the City Council to establish a retail marijuana tax of 4% to 7%. The city already allows
manufacturing, testing and distribution. La Habra voters will decide on Measure W, establishing a tax of up to 2.5% on cannabis distribution and testing businesses, and up to 6% on all other cannabis businesses. Laguna Woods ballot measure is advisory only. The ballot question asks if voters want the city to authorize marijuana retailers. The city currently prohibits all cannabis businesses. If voters back it, there is no certainty the town will move forward with cannabis business licensing. Riverside County Ballot Measures The City of Banning votes on Measure L. It will decide whether to allow distributors to set up shop and impose a distribution tax of up to 10% on company gross receipts. The town already permits retailers, cultivators, manufacturing, and testing. San Diego County Ballot Measures Encinitas voters will decide whether to allow commercial marijuana cultivation, manufacturing, distribution and up to four retail shops. The city currently prohibits all cannabis businesses. Lemon Grove voters will decide on Measure J, to allow a general cannabis business tax of up to 8% of gross receipts. The city currently allows only medical marijuana dispensaries and no other types of businesses, so a yes vote could open the door to recreational businesses. Oceanside voters will decide on Measure M, a ballot measure that establishes a
BY RUTH HILL R.N. range of 2 percent to 6 percent for medical or recreational retailers, manufacturers, and distributors, and up to 3.5 percent for cultivators. The exact percentage within that range would be set by the City Council after the measure is approved. Oceanside in May 2020 already approved its first medical, delivery-only cannabis dispensary. Solana Beach voters will decide on Measure S, to allow at least two storefront marijuana retailers along with indoor cultivation and delivery. The city currently prohibits all cannabis businesses. Would it be easier to convince our federal senators, congressmen, and President to resolve this issue federally? I am dizzy with all these various laws picking apart our miracle plant. On second thought those hairbrained congressmen and senators would end up regulating each molecule of cannabis through their pet agencies. I have horrific visions of CBD being regulated by the State Department, THC regulated by the CIA, CBN regulated by NIH, CBG regulated by Bureau of Alcohol Drug and Tobacco Agency, etc. etc. I feel nauseous. Quick give me my THC! Send comments to info@ruthahillrn.com.

LOCAL BUSINESS
T
he age of COVID-19 has currently changed the way mass gatherings and parties are held. With a limited amount of people only allowed, that doesn’t mean it should put a damper on the festive spirit. Nifty Kreations is a local Coachella Valley small business that provides personalized party decorations and treats with a customized theme of choice. Adriana Rivera is the creator and owner of Nifty Kreations. She wears three hats as wife, mother to three kids, and business owner. Her inspiration for starting Nifty Kreations was based on not liking any of the party decorations available at stores she would visit. Since she couldn’t find any decorations that were unique or to her liking, she started making her own party decorations for her own children, completing most of the work with little assistance. “I started making decorations for my kids

and some family in 2011. I later ventured into creating some for friends, and then their friends. I later started a business profile on Facebook and it started to grow from there,” explained Rivera. Most of the pieces created by Rivera are catered to children’s parties, but Nifty Kreations has provided decorations for other kinds of celebrations. The business specializes in balloons, decorations, candy/
dessert stations (which comes with the option of providing chocolate-covered treats), invitations, centerpieces, cake/cupcake toppers, favor boxes/bags, and other small personalized gifts. Other customizable options from Nifty Kreations include decorations, cups, mugs, table signs for events, and favor tags. The process for creating the decorations usually depends on the first step, which is deciding on a theme for the party, and then

selecting the color scheme. This can range from cartoon characters, animals, sports, and even social media-based designs. After a theme is chosen, Rivera then designs, prints, and cuts images and letters before assembling them. “I started this business because of my children. When I started, there was no one here in the desert that did what I did. The weather can restrict people from having events here, especially in the summer heat. I would love to offer a nice place at an affordable price for people to celebrate their loved ones,” said Rivera. Rivera defines the flexibility of her schedule as being the best part of her job, in addition to being able to work from home and having the ability to watch over her children, especially since they are home most of the time. “My son says I work too much. He’s my youngest and also wants lots of attention,” revealed Rivera. Rivera also enjoys putting smiles on people’s faces after they receive their decorations. The messages of appreciation she receives after the party are always “so moving.” To place an order for Nifty Kreations, you can reach out on Instagram @niftykreations, and also visit Rivera’s Etsy shop, NiftyKreations1.
HEALTH RIVERSIDE COUNTY MOBILE TESTING TEAM MAKES COVID TESTING MORE AVAILABLE NEXT MOBILE TESTING EVENT IN PALM DESERT ON NOV. 12-13
F
ollowing a successful coronavirus testing event in October at the Palm Springs Convention Center, Riverside County’s mobile testing team returns to the Coachella Valley to provide free coronavirus tests to residents. The next mobile testing event is taking place at the Palm Desert Community Center in Palm Desert, 43-900 San Pablo Ave., 8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Nov. 12 and Nov. 13. The Riverside University Health System – Public Health mobile testing team is holding testing events in Coachella, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Sun City Palm Desert, and the unincorporated area adjacent to the City of Desert Hot Springs. A total of six mobile testing events aims to gather hundreds of test results to aid in the detection and disruption of the coronavirus. Riverside County officials remind residents that returning to the red tier of the state’s reopening framework is based on the actions that all of us take – including getting tested. All residents must remain vigilant in safety protocols and get tested. Getting tested is a critical step to early intervention that slows
6
the spread to others. When residents wear face masks outside the home, keep six feet of distance from others and frequently wash their hands, they protect themselves by up to 95 percent of the virus. PCR swab tests for active infections slows the spread of the disease by identifying infected individuals who can then be isolated as well as their close contacts. This process disrupts the virus and slows its spread. “Besides the benefit to our businesses, there’s a payoff for you,” said Dr. Cameron Kaiser, Riverside County public health officer. “If you’re medically vulnerable, detecting the infection early might reduce your risk of complications, and even if you’re well, it means you can take precautions sooner to avoid spreading it to your family or workplace. If we can get less spread, fewer people will be at risk, and that’s the most important goal.” Testing is free at a county or state-run site and available for anyone. Mobile teams support testing in specific communities, businesses or organizations by testing for one or two days. “We know we need
to increase testing throughout the county and residents are responding to the call, as seen in our recent record number of tests over the past two weeks,” said Supervisor V. Manuel Perez. “We want to bring testing closer to our communities, and we thank businesses and communities for partnering with us to provide locations for testing events.” There are 12 permanent testing sites spread throughout Riverside County, both walk-in and
drive-up services. To find county and staterun locations and make an appointment, go online to gettested.ruhealth.org or call 1.800.945.6171/ For a list of other COVID-19 test sites in your area, click covid19.ca.gov/gettested. ADINA LAWSON
A
lthough often used interchangeably, the words "fate" and "destiny" have distinct connotations. ... Fate is about the present, where every decision an individual has made has led them to their present scenario. However, Destiny is the future scenario determined by decisions an individual will make. When I first met Adina Lawson, it was fate. It was in 2014 and I was directing one of the first shows I had undertaken since moving full time to the Desert. It was a play called, “The Estrogen Map,” written by Jeanne Taylor. I had cast and was rehearsing in the desert and then we were going to Los Angeles to be a part of INKFEST, playwriting festival, produced by the 2Cents Theatre Company. Arriving in the Coachella Valley in 2012 from Humboldt County, California, Adina, quickly became one on the Desert’s most in demand theatre talent’s. With an extensive background in teaching English and Theatre, she performed on a multitude of stages across the Coachella Valley. Desert Rose Playhouse, College of the Desert, Palm Canyon Theatre, Dezart Performs, Desert Theatreworks, and Sun City have all produced shows that featured the various characters of this very talented performer. She has received Thirty (30) nominations and eight (8) wins from the Desert Theatre League Star Awards. Appearing in shows such as “In the Heights,” (Both Palm

Women Behind Bars, at the Desert Rose Playhouse and Damn Yankee, South Pacific and Pajama Game at Sun City Performing Arts. (Partial list.) Many of her performances I have had the good fortune to see and review. Adina Lawson is a name that will automatically make me want to see a show. Her passions includes: singing alto harmonies, working in dialects, Fosse choreography, and dramaturgical criticism of texts. Admitting that she loves anything challenging, that makes her grow! When asked how the social distancing and closure of theatre has impacted her work and life, she stated; “The pandemic has brought me lots of internally directed time— I feel that my yoga and meditation, as well as a deep dive into vegan nutrition has grounded me in a different way from how theatre grounds me. But this new quiet quality will, I believe, pay off in a deeper exploration of acting, singing, and directing.” Social Distancing has not stopped many of the desert performing artists from finding creative ways to practice their craft and Adina is no exception. I had a great time watching a fun Special Halloween Edition of MARTINIS AND MEMOIRS featuring Adina Lawson. It was a ZOOM presentation of primarily original
works read by the authors themselves, Judy Siegel, Mary Bryant, Carolyn Todd, Jeanette Knight, Jackie Bivins, Nan Tomasko and Patricia West Del-Ruth. Sponsored by Three Amigos Entertainment. This was a wonderful Halloween treat. Adina’s description of her upcoming directorial project gives us all something wonderful to anticipate. “A zoomed stage reading of Paula Vogel’s superb and compelling play Indecent. Indecent is a play within a play, illuminating a classic play from the world of Yiddish Theatre. It is of particular importance to the LGBTQ community. Produced by Green Room Theatre Company, it will air the Sunday and Monday evenings just after Thanksgiving, as well as once during Hanukkah. Be on the lookout for that on the GRTC FB page, or through any of my wonderful cast. If the fates agree, we’ll be able to do a fully staged production when that is available to all of us.” I think that the fates have certainly brought great joy and talent to the desert in the guise of Adina Lawson. Make her part of your destiny when seeking out great theatre in the desert. Dee Jae Cox is a playwright, director and producer. CONSIDER THIS
D
iana Krall has had many mentors in her life, beginning with her dad Jim (a music-loving accountant who introduced her to Jazz), to legendary musicians like Rosemary Clooney and Ray Brown. But it was the late Tommy LiPuma, who made the most lasting impression. Her new album, This Dream Of You, is a tribute to the celebrated producer and their 25-year working partnership and friendship. Back in the mid ‘90s, it felt as though Diana Krall burst on the Jazz scene out of nowhere. In reality, she had been working her way toward that moment since she was a kid. Encouraged by her Jazz aficionado dad, Jim and her school teacher mom, Adella, the Nanaimo, British Columbia native began playing piano at age four, She was gigging professionally by high school. Diana received a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College Of Music in Boston, and once she completed her studies she decided to make music her profession. Following stints in Los Angeles and Toronto, she moved to New York City. Three years later, her debut, Stepping Out, was released on the boutique label, Justin Time. Critics and Jazz connoisseurs took notice. The album was a sharp collection of standards from composers like Rodgers & Hart, Harold Arlen and Duke Ellington, but the focus was on Diana’s elegant piano stylings and her smoky contralto vocals. Her sophomore effort, Only Trust Your Heart, arrived two years later from GRP Records, under the aegis of Tommy LiPuma. An industry giant, beginning in the early ‘60s, he had already worked his way up the ladder at labels like Liberty, Blue Thumb, Columbia, A&M/Horizon Warner Brothers and Elektra . He landed at GRP/Impulse/Verve in 1994. Having worked with everyone from Miles Davis, Barbra Streisand, Hugh Masakela, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and George Benson to Dr. John and Little Willie John, he and Diana immediately clicked. After Tommy produced Only… he reteamed with Diana for the album that put her on the map. All For You: Dedicated To The Nat King Cole Trio, bypassed the usual Nat King Cole hits, instead concentrating on deep cuts like “Frim Fram Sauce, “I’m Through With Love” and “Hit That Jive Jack.” The album climbed to #3 on the Jazz charts, going Gold (500,00 sold) in Canada and America. From then on, it felt like Diana could do no wrong. Her 1997 album, Love Scenes hit #1 on the Jazz charts and was certified platinum. Two years later, When I Look Into Your Eyes was the first Jazz record to receive a Grammy nomination for Album Of The Year. Even though she lost out to Santana (ick), she still went home with the award for Best Jazz Vocal. The next decade was a see-saw of professional triumphs along with personal highs and lows. Albums like The Look Of Love and Live In Paris continued her creative winning streak. Sadly, 2002 saw the passing of her mom, Ray Brown and Rosemary Clooney, but it was also the year she met Elvis Costello. The British singer-songwriter, born Declan McManus, was part of the inaugural Class Of Punk back in 1977. But his dad was

a Jazz trumpeter and Big Band vocalist who exposed his son to myriad musical styles. Even though his first three albums redefined the Punk/New Wave paradigm, he also recorded albums devoted to Country, Soul, Jazz and Classical. It felt like a perfect match. The couple were wed at Elton John’s English estate in 2003. For her 2004 effort, The Girl In The Other Room, Diana took an intriguing detour. Almost a joint collaboration between the newlyweds, it eschewed her usual mix of standards. Instead, it featured songs she and Elvis cowrote as well as her tart interpretations of songs by more contemporary artists like Mose Allison, Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits. It may have confounded longtime fans, but it still debuted on the charts at #1. In 2006, Diana and Elvis welcomed the arrival of their twin sons, Dexter and Frank. In the ensuing years, Diana has managed to balance career and family life, releasing a new album every three years. First up was From This Moment On, the Bossa Novaflavored Quiet Nights showed up in 2009. She tapped acclaimed producer T-Bone Burnett (Elvis’ best pal) for 2012’s Glad Rag Doll which included a lot of her dad’s favorite Jazz songs from the ‘20s and ‘30s. In 2015, she switched gears again, for Wallflower. This time, she enlisted fellow Canadian David Foster to produce a clutch of Pop Rock AM radio favorites from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. The set included songs from the Mamas And The Papas, Eagles, Elton John and 10cc. In 2017, she reunited with Tommy LiPuma for their seventh collaboration, Turn Up The Quiet, is an impossibly elegant collection of standards that really swings. Sadly, Tommy passed away not long after the album was completed. A year later, she recorded a duets album with Tony Bennett. Our Love Is Here To Stay concentrated exclusively on classic songs from the George and Ira Gershwin canon. Naturally, it debuted at #1 on the Jazz charts. All told, Diana and Tommy recorded about 40 songs during the Turn Up The Quiet sessions. While promoting the album, she hinted there could actually be a second and possibly third volume culled from those recordings. This Dream Of You, her 15th album is that second volume. The first three songs, set the tone for the album. “But Beautiful,” the Jimmy Van Heusen/Johnny Burke ballad has been performed by everyone from Dorothy Lamour to Bob Dylan, but the definitive version belongs to Billie Holiday. Diana leans closest to Billie’s phrasing and Ray Ellis’ arrangement. Over a fluttery string section, piquant guitar, plaintive piano, a walking bass line and brushed drums, her vocals shapeshift from tremulous and intimate to bold and distant. She quietly caresses lyrics that explicate the vagaries of romance; “Love is tearful or it’s gay, it’s a problem or it’s play, it’s a heartache either way, but beautiful.” Rippling guitar notes are enveloped by soaring strings and plucking bass lines on the break, as perfect as that’s sounds, it’s incomplete without Diana’s intime vocals, which tenderly close the song. The piano intro to “That’s All” sketches

out the melody before sly bass lines, willowy guitar and hushed percussion are folded into the mix. Diana’s rich contralto is equal parts shy and seductive, as though she’s letting us in on a secret when she confesses; “I can only give you love that lasts forever, and promise to be near each time you call/And the only heart I own, for you and you alone, that’s all, that’s all.” As drums and bass thread through on the break, piano and guitar execute a graceful pas de deux that is by turns playful, crafty and sleek. Diana, in particular unfurls a crisp series of chord changes that echo the genius of the late pianist Vince Guaraldi. Meanwhile, “Autumn In New York,” which was originally written in the early ‘30s, receives a lush arrangement. Wistful guitar licks are matched by moody upright bass, warm piano and an opulent string section. The instrumental cornucopia is tempered by Diana’s diffident mien. Here, she quietly captures the terror and magnificence of the big city; “It’s autumn in New York that brings the promise of new love, autumn in New York is often mingled with pain/Dreamers with empty hands may sigh for exotic lands, it’s autumn in New York, it’s good to live it again.” To paraphrase the Gershwin boys, what’s wonderful what’s marvelous about Diana Krall is that she is equally at home backed by a 30-piece orchestra, an ornate string section or a lone piano. On both “More Than You Know” and “Don’t Smoke In Bed,” Alan Broadbent takes over piano duties, allowing her to concentrate exclusively on vocals. The results are simply swell. “More..” opens with an expansive piano prelude, and features the (rarely recorded) original first couple verses; “Whether you are here or yonder, whether you are false or true, whether you remain or wander, I’m growing fonder of you/Even though your friends forsake you, even though you don’t succeed, wouldn’t I be glad to take you, give you the break that you need,” that most singers skip. A classic torch song, she imbues each note with heartache and longing. “Don’t Smoke…” leans in on the Saloon tradition that was practically invented by Frank Sinatra. Brittle piano underscores lyrics that toggle between apathy and wifely concern. Here, Diana slips out under the cover of darkness, leaving a note and a discarded wedding ring; “I’m packing you in like I said…” Still, she can’t help but worry; when she warns; “don’t smoke in bed.” On both “Almost Like Being In Love” and
“Just You, Just Me” Diana completely cuts loose. The former opens with a jaunty piano refrain before skittery drums, thumping bass and filigreed guitar kicks in, locking into a finger-popping groove. Although the mood seems measured, the instrumentation simply swings. On the break everyone stretches out, coloring outside the lines without appearing flashy or ostentatious. The latter opens with a stunning salvo of drums that clatter and careen until bass, guitar, piano and fiddle jump in. Diana’s manner is playful and frisky as she impishly suggests they find a secluded spot to “cuddle and woo.” As the beat accelerates, pizzicato fiddle collides with rapid-fire arpeggios from Diana’s piano, recalling the electrifying Gypsy Jazz of Stephane Grappelli and Djanjo Reinhardt. The album’s highlight is the title track, written by Bob Dylan, this relax-fit waltz was originally found on his 2009 album, “Together Through Life.” Diana’s version slightly sands off the song’s rougher edges, but retains its rusticity. Quiescent piano connects with tranquil bass, subdued drums, mournful fiddle, Spanish-flavored guitar and melancholy accordion colors. The courtly arrangement partners with lonesome lyrics that seem to offer a tender encomium to Tommy LiPuma; “From a cheerless room, in a curtain gloom, I saw a star from Heaven fall, I turned and looked again but it was gone/ All I have and all I know is this dream of you, which keeps me living on.” Other interesting tracks include the winsome “There’s No You.” Diana completely recalibrates “I Wished On The Moon” turning the expansive ballad into a joyful Jazz-jump, buoyed by commanding bass lines, an infectious downbeat and some frolicsome piano. The obverse is true with the typically cheery “How Deep Is The Ocean,” which scales back to a moody tone poem. The album closes with a sunny take on “Singing In The Rain.” Piano, vocals and bass are quickly bookended by shimmery guitar and a syncopated beat. Here, her phrasing is slow as molasses, yet she still manages to reveal the same joie de vivre as Gene Kelly as he romped through puddles, in the timeless MGM musical. Diana counted the film’s director, the late Stanley Donen as a friend, so this feels like a bit of an homage. Diana was accompanied on several tracks by her longtime backing band, bassist John Clayton, Jr., drummer Jeff Hamilton and guitarist Anthony Wilson. But she also received assistance from bassists Christian McBride and Tony Garnier, guitarists Russell Malone and Marc Ribot, along with drummer Kareem Riggins. Stuart Duncan added fiddle, Randall Krall played accordion. Alan Broadbent handled orchestral arrangements. This Dream Of You is a rich and nuanced tribute to Diana’s mentor and friend, Tommy LiPuma; an effortless coda to a friendship that lasted a quarter of a century.

ound as a stray in the streets of Desert Hot Springs, the little tan Chihuahua was brought into the city’s shelter, the Desert Hot Springs Animal Care Center. He was a friendly fellow, but no one came searching for him. Deemed to be about 8 years of age, this Chihuahua boy was not the pet sought by most Coachella Valley adopters. Chihuahuas are the 2nd largest group (after pit bulls) in America’s public shelters, and the 2nd largest group euthanized.

and radiographs revealed disc disease could be causing pain and discomfort for the pup. He was also diagnosed with a grade 3/6 heart murmur. The Cisco kid would need to be on medication for the rest of his life. The consensus was there would probably be a long wait for a forever home. Who would want to make this little fellow part of their family, given his breed, age, and medical issues? He proved to be a dear little soul who got along with other dogs, but his greatest joy was being with people. Calls poured in to the Loving All Animals office from folks seeking young fluffy breed dogs such as Maltese and Poodle blends.
The shelter contacted Tracy Habijanac at Loving All Animals, and she arranged for him to enter their shelter and adoption program. They called him the Cisco Kid, named after the “Robin Hood” type hero in the old 1960’s Western. A quiet and sweet pup who liked people, his behavior became more elevated when people approached his kennel. He squealed when picked up, arousing suspicion that there might be an underlying medical condition. A vet appointment was quickly arranged,

AN OPEN APERTURE TO THE FUTURE
I
f there is anything wonderful to speak about for wine enthusiasts—pandemic notwithstanding (?!?)--is that the world of wine continues to improve with its quality. We veterans of the wine game have witnessed waves of great strides in both the artistic and production aspects of winemaking. In the last five decades we’ve seen traditional wine making families of Europe influence the new world by sharing all of the knowledge and experience of the trade most generously, and in particular, California, we’ve watched a huge wine empire expand in the production of world class wine. I grew up learning and tasting Bordeaux, and in the 60s and 70s, Bordeaux and Burgundy were the bar; and every wine region in the world wanted to make a wine with the same quality. In the 80s and 90s, California was absolutely taking charge in the production of premium world class wine. Indeed, the world wanted to make a wine comparable to our California stuff! A lot of money was coming into the Cal wine business; and great professionals, in and out of the trade, were able to make great wine. An incredibly, right before our eyes—and palates, wine just keeps getting better. So now, please allow me to bring to your attention, yet another great California wine story: Aperture Cellars and the Aperture Estate. As is the custom in these past pandemic months, we wine columnist have been maintaining our relationships with many winemakers through many Zoom virtual wine tastings. We’ve been given the pleasure of receiving newly released wine for sampling and doing so in real time with the winemakers, most often right in their winery facilities. Last month, I got to meet, greet, hear, and discuss wine with Jesse Katz and taste through three of his recent vintages from Aperture Cellars. Many of you already know that Jesse was the young assistant winemaker at Screaming Eagle from 2008 to 2010. Talk about California Dreaming! Can you imagine so early in a career being accustomed to producing wines in –– vintages 2007, 2008 and 2009 –– sold to members on Screaming Eagle’s list for $850 a bottle, while the secondary market charged $2,000 to $3,000! But that’s all quantitative stuff—much more importantly, is the qualitative aspect to Jesse’s winemaking philosophy. Early adventures to legendary vineyards gave Jesse Katz a profound respect for the creative art of viticulture. The story of Aperture Cellars began well over a decade ago, when Jesse Katz was growing up. His father—renowned photographer Andy Katz—brought him on visits to the most famous vineyards around the world, from the heart of Burgundy to the hills of Tuscany. Aperture Cellars was founded in Sonoma in 2009 and is a collaborative project between Jesse and his fathers as a way to craft excellent wine from the unique, cool-climate vineyards found in the county's Alexander Valley. Wanting to produce wines on par with the quality and refinement that are so integral to a Bordeaux, Jesse set roots in Healdsburg and Sonoma, believing it offers the best of both worlds: new world fruit and old world elegance. I could go on and on with all of the accolades Jesse has amassed during the last decade of his young life, such as: In 2013, Wine Enthusiast
14
named Jesse one of its 40 Under 40 Tastemakers; Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list; and, a Wine Spectator “Rising Star” and he continues to work with some of the most famed and celebrated winemakers around the world. And that his Devil Proof Vineyards Malbec has been declared to be, perhaps, the best California Malbec ever! But we can talk about his wine mindset and actions by reviewing the three wines we virtually tasted with Jesse on the computer. 2018 Aperture Sauvignon Blanc ($40) Most of the time with winemaker Zoom tastings, we wait to open the wine (especially with the whites) along with the winemaker. But I had the Aperture Sauv Blanc in the fridge for a while and on one of our hot desert days, I had to open that baby up. Immediately, one could tell that this wine was world class in character. I like the term “striking bouquet” that’s been used previously on this wine. Ready? Aromas and palate show pear, peach, apple, citrus, grapefruit, lemon, honey, flint minerals. And then there is that slight “Semillon” note. So aromatic, that’s all you need is slight—here 2%. And if you get that D’Yquem scent, it’s because Jesse brought over D’Yquem root stock. 2017 Aperture Right Bank Red Blend ($55): It’s been said that, “Jesse creates distinct, nuanced wines with Old World structure and New World fruit, lush and representative of their origin, but also original, forward-thinking, not married to any regional stereotypes.” This Red Blend exemplifies that language. A touch more Malbec than Merlot, it comes across with California deep red fruits, but after a couple of hours of aeration, it swings toward a Pomerol Right Bank Bordeaux. Please give it time to open up! 2017 Aperture Cabernet Sauvignon ($69) The winery notes describe the wines setting succinctly: “Focusing first on the Cabernet fruit from four mineral-rich, volcanic soil sites nestled on cooler hillside slopes in the Alexander Valley, this vintage’s blend is uniquely crafted with delicate inclusions of Merlot and Malbec.” You Cal Cab fans know this area well already— and you can probably gather the wines nuances from the geography. Therefore, with adequate aeration, you will find a full-bodied, elegant wine with layers and layers of dark fruits especially blackberries, cassis, and ripe blueberries. It’s got great structured tannins with a rich and supple finish of clove, cinnamon and toasted oak. Our space is limited here, but we hope to write on the full portfolio of Aperture wines in the future, along with an exciting discussion of the Aperture Estate—a state of the art winery, tasting room, and entertainment/leisure center. For now, please go to aperture-cellars.com and check all the sights! Cheers!

F
ortune Magazine recently released their list of the 400 wealthiest Americans for 2020. These 400 people are collectively worth $3.2 trillion, up one-quarter trillion from last year. To put this level of wealth into perspective, it equates to nearly $10,000 per American or $10 million for every full-time resident of the Coachella Valley. Despite the most expensive divorce of alltime, Jeff Bezos (56) remained the wealthiest America worth $179 billion. His ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott (50) became the 13th wealthiest person and second wealthiest woman. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KETO VS LOW-CARB?
Y
ou hear a lot about how Keto and low carb are interchangeable. Most people think of Keto as a low carb diet…and it is. There is, however, a difference between the two diets. When you are eating a Keto diet, you’re burning fat (ketones) for energy instead of carbohydrates (glucose) on a low carb diet. Even though you are eating low carb, you are still using carbs for your fuel. And, the amount of carbs consumed is much higher on a low carb diet. LOW-CARB WITHOUT KETOSIS Keep in mind that just because you reduce the amount of carbs you eat does not mean that you’re burning body fat for energy. There’s no need to be producing ketones to lose weight with low carb. People who lower their daily intake to less than 75-100 grams a day have been successful in dropping pounds. And, if you have an active lifestyle on low carb…even better! LOWERING DAILY CARBS Why would you want to consider a low carb diet? It’s a great place to start if you fuel yourself with carb-laden meals all day long and snack too! When you start eating less carbs you won’t be spiking insulin and blood sugars. So, you will start to lose weight even though you’re still using carbs as your fuel. And, it gives you a chance to ease into a low carb lifestyle. It may be better for you to start with low carb and work your way up to Keto or decide if you are more comfortable with a low carb diet only. If you’re eating low-carb, and your goal is not to be in ketosis, you’ll still lose weight. Keto on the other hand is only 20 grams of total carbs a day so it is incredibly low carb in comparison. The beauty of Keto, though, is you’ll have more energy, won’t be hungry, burn fat and lose weight faster. (When you think of burning fat, I want you to think body fat that’s around your belly and booty and anywhere else…this alone is making Keto the hottest diet ever right now) HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU ARE IN KETOSIS? The only way to know for sure if you’re in a state of ketosis is confirming it through daily testing with affordable ketone strips that you can buy at your local pharmacy. You have the choice to decide what’s best for you based on your current lifestyle and weight loss goals. Here’s the bottom line: It’s possible to lose weight on both a low-carb diet and a ketogenic diet. If you choose Keto, and stay in ketosis, you’ll quickly find it’s really the best way to lose weight. Even more important, it’s the best way to lose body fat. If you stay in ketosis, your body will be burning fatty acids (ketones) for energy and burning fat. So, it’s likely that after a short time on Keto you’ll notice your clothes will fit much looser and the results you are looking for happen faster. If you’re still undecided, I’m here to help you make that choice and look at your mindset around carbs. We’ll also evaluate your lifestyle and goals to decide what will work best for you to start losing weight. FREEWILL ASTROLOGY
WEEK OF NOVEMBER 5
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Aries poet Charles Baudelaire championed the privilege and luxury of changing one’s mind. He thought it was natural and healthy to always keep evolving beyond one’s previous beliefs and attitudes, even if that meant one might seem inconsistent or irrational. “It is lamentable,” he once proclaimed, “that, among the Rights of Human Beings, the right to contradict oneself has been disregarded.” I bring these thoughts to your attention, dear Aries, so that you will feel at peace with the prospect of outgrowing rules, strategies, and approaches that have worked well for you up until now—but that have outlived their usefulness. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The horoscopes I write are my love letters to you. As I compose them, my goal is to celebrate your beauty and strength even as I discern what’s lacking in your life and what confusions might be undermining you. In my philosophy of life, that’s how love works at its best: remaining keenly aware of the good qualities in the beloved while helping them deal with their problems and heal their wounds. I suggest that in the coming weeks you adopt my approach for use with your own close relationships. Your allies are in special need of both your praise and your rectifications. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): When Charles de Gaulle was 15 years old, he wrote “General de Gaulle,” a short story in which he envisioned himself, many years in the future, as a general in the French army. Thirty-five years later, his imaginary tale came true, as he became a general of the free French army fighting against Germany in World War II. In the spirit of de Gaulle’s prophecy, and in accordance with current astrological omens, I encourage you to compose a comparable tale about your own destiny. Have fun as you visualize in great detail a successful role you will play months or even years from now. CANCER (June 21-July 22): In 1903, archaeologists digging in a cave in Cheddar Gorge, England found the fossilized remains of “Cheddar Man,” a person who had lived there 9,000 years earlier. In 1997, DNA tests revealed that a teacher named Adrian Targett, who was living a half-mile from the cave, was a direct descendant of Cheddar Man. I propose that we invoke this scenario to serve as a metaphor for you in the coming months. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, your ancestors are likely to play a bigger role in your life than usual. Connections between you and them will be more vivid and influential and worthy of your meditations. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): According to the film Amadeus, composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) and Antonio Salieri (1750–1825) were adversaries who disliked and undermined each other. But there’s evidence that this was not entirely true. In fact, they collaborated on creating a cantata that was performed by Nancy Storace, a famous singer they both admired. It’s unlikely they would have cooperated in such a way unless they had a working relationship. I suspect that a comparable correction is due in your world, Leo. It’s time to dissolve a misunderstanding or restore a lost truth or fix an old story that got some of the facts wrong. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): The coming weeks will be a favorable time for you to ask for help and seek support. I urge you to be forthright in doing so! Resources that have been inaccessible before may be more available now. I suspect you will be able to capitalize on the luck and skill of allies who have benefited from your favors in the past. Their successes could bring you blessings and their breakthroughs should inspire you to instigate breakthroughs in your own life. Be straightforward: Ask them to lend their influence in your behalf. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): In the 1970s, an Englishman named Stephen Pile founded the Not Terribly Good Club. It was designed to be a gathering place for mediocre people whose lives were marked by inadequacy and incompetence. To organize his thoughts about the club’s themes, Pile eventually

published a book entitled The Book of Heroic Fallures. Unfortunately, it sold so many copies that he got expelled from his own club. He had become too successful! I suspect that in the coming months, you may have an experience akin to his. The odds are good that you’ll find interesting success in an area of your life where you have previously been just average. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “At every crossroad, be prepared to bump into wonder,” wrote Scorpio poet James Broughton. I believe that’s stirring advice for you to keep in mind during the coming weeks. Broughton’s words inspired me to come up with a corollary for you to heed, as well: “At every turning point, be ready to stumble into an opportunity disguised as a problem.” I’ve got one more clue for you. Last night in my dream, my Scorpio poetry teacher offered a thought that’s well-suited for you right now: “Whenever you want to take a magic twisty leap into the big fresh future, be willing to engage in one last wrestling match with the past.” SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Actor Gary Busey is quirky and kooky, but his peculiar rants sometimes make good sense. Here’s one that I suspect might be useful for you to consider during the next two weeks: “It’s good for everyone to understand that they are to love their enemies, simply because your enemies show you things about yourself you need to change. So in actuality enemies are friends in reverse.” I don’t mean to imply that your adversaries and nemeses are totally accurate in their critiques of you. But there may be a thing or two you can learn from them right now that would truly improve your life. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Musician John Coltrane described one of his life goals as follows: “There are forces out here that bring suffering to others and misery to the world,” he said. “But I want to be the opposite force. I want to be the force which is truly for good.” Even if that’s not an intention at the core of your long-term plans, Capricorn, I recommend you consider adopting it during the next few weeks. Being a vigorous and rigorous force for good will be especially needed by the people with whom you associate—and will also result in you attracting interesting benefits. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Known as “the bad boy of bridge,” Aquarian-born Geir Helgemo is a champion in the card game of bridge. At times he has been the top-rated player among Open World Grand Masters. But in 2019, he was suspended from the World Bridge Federation for a year because he tested positive for taking testosterone supplements that are banned. Why did he do it? He hasn’t said. There is some scientific research suggesting that testosterone may boost cognitive function, but other evidence says it doesn’t. I’d like to use Helgemo’s foolishness as a teaching story for your use, Aquarius. According to my astrological analysis, you’re approaching the peak of your competence and confidence. There’s no need for you to cheat or sneak or misbehave in a misplaced effort to seek an even greater advantage. In fact, righteous integrity will enhance your intelligence. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “I might really have gone round the bend,” confessed Botswana author Bessie Head. “I mean people who get visions and see a gigantic light descend on them from the sky can’t be all there, but if so I feel mighty happy. If one is happy and cracked it’s much better than being unhappy and sane.” Although I don’t expect your state of mind in the coming weeks will be as extreme as Bessie Head’s, Pisces, I do suspect it will have resemblances to her dreamy cheerfulness. If I had to give a title to this upcoming phase, it might be “Wise Folly.” And yes, I do think your “craziness” will generate useful insights and fertile revelations. Homework: At what moment in your past were you happiest about the person you were? Can you recreate it?
